Reviews of Old Town Trolley Tours

If you know of it and know how it works it's great. First the good. It takes tourists to 14 selected destinations in an unending cycle by letting you hop on and off the bus. The driver cum guide does contribute his or her bit. Now things one must know. (1) If you think you can do all the 14 in day you are fooling yourself. It needs minimum 4 days.(2) The bus doesn't come in 15 minutes. It could take a minimum 15 but could go up to 40 mins. And don't be sure that you can get a seat because you getting in will depend on how many get out of it. But surely, you will if not in the first, in the next. (3) The driver cum guide could incessantly be talking but that may make no sense in relation to where you are headed to. It could be better if a write up on each destination is catalogued and such a vignette is provided.(4) It will be great if they can provide a walkers map along with the trolley map. Both are different on scales if someone thinks I am not talking right.
But it's undoubtedly value for money. I am taking it again

This was a pretty good tour and we enjoyed it a lot. There were a good number of stops and the live narration was helpful and interesting. We really enjoyed all of the drivers. They kept it fun and interesting. I do wish all the buses were accessible and that there was an app so you could keep better track of when a bus/trolley would come around. They supposedly came around every 20 minutes but that wasn't consistent (I'm sure because of traffic and other unforeseen issues).

This was such a great opportunity to see the city and get around without too much walking. The guides were great, full of mostly true information and really nice each time we got on the trolley. We went for the two day passes and also purchased the Ghosts and Gravestones tour. The whole family loved the Ghost and Gravestones tour. Betty was a fantastic guide. Loved her outfit and the way she lead the tour. Highly recommend!

Walking the freedom trail and riding the trolley on the way back is an experience I will never forget! The history these guides know and explain will blow you away! The rich history lesson engulfs you as you ride through the narrow streets of the north end! This is where America started! As a true patriot I loved every second of this trip.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a ghost tour. We were nearly out of time visiting Boston. We decided our first ghost tour would be fun. We showed up after dark to get on. We did 9pm to make sure it was dark. Our driver did a great job getting around the city. Our tour guide, Dr Adickus..., was great. He was full of dark jokes and a few dad jokes. Not sure if I spelled it correctly so I added a pic of him. I did not research the tour so I was surprised when we stopped and walked to the first graveyard. The total tour took us about 1.5 hours. There was a second guide at the 3rd location. Location 2 and 3 are close enough you don't get back on the bus. The second guide was hard to hear for those in the back. Take some cash for tips and bring some water if it is hot. The walks are short, but there is some elevation change. I was surprised when I tipped the guide I was first but several people had exited before me.

The tour was fine and guides are good, buses are clean. It's worth the money.
However, if you are disabled with a medium or large service dog be aware the trolleys are very narrow and the dogs do not fit well tucked. My labrador can fit tucked under an airplane seat but did not fit on these buses. He couldn't even stand between my seat and the seat in front of me, his shoulders/chest were wider than the space! He ended up riding in the aisle, which is not proper SD etiquette but it was our only option. There was another SD labrador team we ran into on one of the trolley rides that had the same problems. It's not horrible/awful against the company, it's just very limited in the accessibility to be aware of. Smaller SD teams will be fine, we ran into a few that were held in their handlers' laps.
They do ask the 2 ADA allowed questions before boarding, which I do appreciate!
A wheelchair or other larger medical equipment would also have a very difficult time fitting.

Good tour staff. All three tour guides were very good. If you plan to do hop on and off service we recommend you start in the morning after breakfast. We started after lunch and could not do as many on and off stops as we would have liked. Great town history and things to see. A must do if new to Boston to orient yourself to everything.

I often do a hop on hop off when when I visit a new city. It is a great and easy way to a city. The Boston city tour was fabulous. We also did the Ghosts and Gravestone evening ride…that was a lot of fun. The tour guides were amazing! Both were well worth the time and money.

The history is outstanding. We took this narrated trolley tour so we wouldn’t miss anything because our time was limited. However the first guy, Skipper, needed a communication class. We couldn’t understand a word he said. Luckily he went to lunch and Miss Jackson took over. She was phenomenal! Until the car tried to squeeze between the trolley and the curb in the right turn lane. Miss Jackson said, I don’t know where she thinks she’s going, there’s no room to get by me. But little car panicked when the light turned green and she hit the gas. It’s amazing how loud the sound of crashing metal and busted tires sound in an open air bus. Little car slammed into the curb immediately rupturing her tire on the right and destroying her rearview mirror on the left side. The trolley suffered a major gash. Everyone on board became witnesses.
We only gave Boston a day and a half and unfortunately we didn’t get the full Boston experience.

we enjoyed the first driver Matt very much! He was fun and entertaining and full of knowledge about the history and city. Sad to say our other two guides were not as enjoyable-one kept asking the riders to give drivers on the road the finger and the other barely knew the history. I gave it a 5 because we enjoyed Matt so much. We stayed on the whole hour and a half to see the whole city, and then we were able to get off on the stops we found most interesting the next trip around. You really need two days to see the route though. I kept notes on the stops on the map they give you. they gave great food recommendations too.

I didn’t have enough time and energy to walk through the old town of Boston, so I chose to take a rough tour via the trolley. I didn’t get off the car since it was raining and cold. The driver, Mr. Bailey(I hope I remember his name correctly), introduced the old town to us with his passion. I really appreciate his hard work. The gentleman working in the booth at Long Wharf was also nice. Overall, it’s a good experience.

We have visited Boston a few times. Every time we go, we use Old Town Trolley. We love that you are able to get on and off at all the popular sights. We did go at peak season when lines were long for trolley waits, but the staff kept us moving and had trolleys every five minutes. The drivers kept us laughing and we learned a lot. We plan to visit Boston again and use the trolley.

My husband and I went from DC, NYC, then drove all the northeastern states for our bucket list (4 day trip). We were going to fly out of Logan airport at the break of dawn the last day, so we spent the afternoon prior in Boston. Parked near the USS Constitution, walked part of the Freedom Trail to Bunker Hill and back and did the trolley tour through the rest of the way just to see what was in Boston because we really didn’t have many ideas (and exhausted from walking DC and NYC just days before). We never hopped off until the end, but our guide Ghost was a lot of fun telling us all about the city, had a few good jokes and stories so he made it entertaining. A couple of stops had more people than he could hold but he made sure someone knew there were more people waiting. All in all, I’m glad we did this because it was a way for us to see the city and learn about somewhere we’d likely never travel to again (we prefer warmer weather).

We absolutely loved the tours and the drivers. We were there 10/30 Sunday and the drivers were amazing. I wore my NY Yankees shirt (brave to do so in Boston. LOL) and the drivers and I had a great time about it. Beanie even gave me a "Trolley Token" for my bravery. LOL! We highly recommend Old Town Trolley Tours!
Karen Casey-Cave
We really enjoyed our driver Crafty. Be aware that two stops were eliminated on our tour. We found arriving as early as 9:00 am was beneficial as the trolleys fill up quickly.

Having been to Boston 12 years ago, I had a good idea of the layout of the city. My wife hasn't been there since she was a child so this was all new. We rode with Papa Jim and had a blast! He is a wealth of knowledge and can answer just about any question. I recommend getting at least the 2 day ticket: day 1, ride the stops and plan what you would like to see more of at any particular stop; day 2, go on and off at those stops. I just wish the tours went to Fenway and Fenway Park, which is another fantastic hour-long tour. Next time we go back we'll do the graveyard tour at night! I highly recommend this tour to see Boston!

We had a great time! Our tour guide Maureen was real crazy, nutty, over the top but real fun! She made the story real with sound effects, music coordinating with her narration. Nothing can match her enthusiasm! No dull moment!

Originally we had a great Trolley driver & were enjoying the tour, but then we were made to transfer to another trolley that was 3 seats short of fully occupied. New driver told silly, made-up stories & allowed a family of 5 onto the already packed trolley so that 2 of them had to sit on the others' laps, which crowded us uncomfortably for the entire tour.
Michelle Deckard
Crafty was a fabulous tour guide. Lots of great information and a great sense of humor!
A great tour to get to know Boston so you can determine what areas you want to go to!

It's a nice way to get around the city and hear some history as well. We bought the one-day pass and used it on a cooler, wetter day. It's very cold on the trolley on a cold day because if the plastic windows are closed people can't see very well so people like to keep them open. We were glad to get off each time we did, just so we could warm up. Riding on the trolley late in the afternoon is very slow with the traffic and our driver tried to circumnavigate the traffic by going on narrower streets, which was also slow. The last time we got off we chose to walk the mile back to our hotel because we were tired of the slowness of the trolley at that point in the day.

The history provided by Capt. Matty was great ! He was an excellent tour guide! Fun and funny! Great way to see Boston! He’s a keeper!
Sandy Nicholson
The Trolley is a great way to see Boston! Getting on and off is great; you just show your ticket or QR code from your emailed ticket and ride all day. Be sure to hit Paul Revere's house, the USS Constitution, Modern Pastry in Little Italy (close to the Revere house), the Old North Church, and Boston Public Library (2nd largest in the country, only 2nd to the Library of Congress), among so many other fascinating sites. Drivers are courteous and helpful; we felt it was well worth it.
Victoria Fritze
Drivers were very knowledgeable, but we wished we had a more exact time the buses would be at the stops. An app showing the buses would be nice.

This is for sure handsdown the best way to see all of Boston's sites! Tour is worth the time and money! I recommend the two day package so you can spend adequate time touring site's. The hop on and off is convenient. The tour guides are knowledgeable and comical! Highly recommend!!!!

A great way to see the city! Esp with cooler weather and wind! Loved the hop on and off ease, stops were relevant. Our tour guide MURPH did a great job keeping our interest, adding historical details and interacting with the group. He made it fun and was easy to listen to! That made a big difference! My feet were happy for a resting day.
Excellent value. Glad we did it! Don't forget to tip your driver friends!

We had a really LONG wait for one trolley - the line was approximately 55 or 60 people long in front of us. Other than that, it was good. The staff were very nice & knowledgeable.
Jennifer Cawthon
Drivers had good personalities and shared great Biston history. Trolleys were very timely and provided stops at great locations.
Gill K
Really good way to get around Boston and see different sights. We enjoyed our trip, our driver was informative and made the trip entertaining.
Jim Phillips
We sure learned a lot about Boston. Papa Jim was very informative and entertaining. Well worth the time and money.
Steve Roland
This was a great way to get an overview of Boston. Hop on and off plus you get to enjoy the narration and some humor from the drivers.
Iona Deroche
While I enjoyed the tour and learned a lot, I was disappointed that it was not more culturally diverse. Many shades represent the United States of America and have contributed to its rise and fall. Great tour guide!
Derek Whelan
Driver were very entertaing, miss Jackson is a legend
Steve Wegner
I have used these hop on hop off services in many cities and I believe they are worth it. The only problem with the Boston bus was the app and the map locations for the stops were not the same and when they had to remove 2 stops the app did not warn you

We just did this tour last Wednesday. I've taken the City View trolley tour and this one and I think the drivers on these tours are funnier, more entertaining and more knowledge ( at least they seem to be). We opted for a package that included the harbor cruise and narrated tour, which I highly recommend. It was great to learn about the waterfront and it's history, which is not something you get too much of on the trolley. And, it's a nice harbor cruise for about 1.5-2 hours. The first and last stops on the tour are rich with colonial history, but the middle is a little bogged down with architectural history. Overall, a good way to see Boston and a convenient way to get to different neighborhoos.

I have taken tours in Key West with this company, so I took this one in Boston. I bought the 2 day pass with the ghost tour and it came with a water tour and something else I can't remember right now. AMAZING!! Informative, funny, clean trollies. the drivers saw me several times throughout the 2 days and remembered me and called me Miami. Which is where I am from. It was like jumping into a friends car. You wont regret taking this tour!!
Melissa Alexander
Was okay to get history, was our first visit to Boston so we got to see the highlights. if did again will do two days.
Will S.
It seemed a little pricey but most everything is in Boston. Wish I had gotten an upper seat on a different type of carriage. This was open air and pleasant but a lot of what the guide was talking about was up high. They did give you half off a boat tour which I found much better.
Chelsea Rock Phelps
A great way to meet your local transportation needs but learn about Boston while getting to your next destination.
James
We always use Hop On Hop Off to get the layout of the Cities we visit whether we're on a short or long visit.
Neal Martin
"Foxtrot" was a great tour guide, with lots of history in his presentation--and really bad jokes!
Poppy
I really enjoyed the tour around boston and the ability to hop on and off to enjoy certain sites and places longet.
Joseph Murray
Great narration by the driver. Fairly crowded during peak hours.
John Haskett
Awesome! Statch (sp) was great, told relevant stories, brought the history of what we were passing to life. Everybody loved it! Well worth the money and time!
Candace
Spent time sitting and waiting. Driver dropped us off and told us to walk to the next stop because a delivery truck was in his way. We were not sure why he didn't just wait. I was fearful of getting off too much because I heard it can be hard to board again when it's crowded. Got off at stop 5 for the free museums. If you do this tour start early in the day so you can have time to get off, eat, and shop.
Karen Beck
Loved this tour. Well worth the cost. The availability to get on and off at your own pace is great. No rushing. . The tour guides Sean was funny and a wealth of information. You really need to do this.
Wm Senn O'Donnell Jr
Great intro to the city's highlights for an out-of-towner!
laurie shields
Very informative and fun. Easy hop off and back on.
Nick Swearngin
They do a good job, great way to see the city and move about all while learning quite a bit of the history of Boston.
Amber Lowry
Great experience! Would have given a five out of five if the tours weren't so short due to some stops not being offered.
Jose Herrera
Good option for 1first timers . But would be nice if they ran a longer day schedule till 7-8pm.
Michael St. Denis
Only allowing you to get off at one place (cheers) but still labeled on the buses as hop on hop off, and the website says you can start at any stop
Jim Cowan
This is a great way to get an overview of Boston. Drivers are nice, buses are clean and the price is reasonable.
valentine constancio
Easy way to get around town and learn the history...
Cynthia Brantley
Knowledgeable guides but you can't just ride the circle if you don't start at stop 1.
Teresea Wells
Best way to see Boston and see the history with a guided tour.
John George
overall a good tour
Joni Wagner
The drivers were very knowledgeable

Sonny is the BEST!!!
Marc-André Savard
Great way to learn about Boston in less than 2 hours! You can then use the buss to move in town. JD was great to tell us different stories about the town.
