Found the Hunter Banks website from a google search, they have a ton of fishing information on their site about fishing around Asheville. So, I gave a call to discuss a possible full day guided wade trip. The person on the phone was great to deal with and very knowledgable, I explained to him that my wife will be with me and she hasn't fished that often. He explained to me that is their favorite type of angler. So I booked the trip. Two days before the trip Jimmy (our guide) called to discuss the trip. The morning of we met Jimmy at HB to get set up and buy fishing licenses. We then headed to to our fishing spot in the beautiful Great Smokey Mountains. Not only was the scenery beautiful, but what an awesome day of fishing, we caught Rainbows, Brookies, Browns. We caught them on Dry flies and Nymphs. Jimmy is a great guide and he took the time to help my wife on her first full day of Fly Fishing. He is extremely knowledgeable about fishing and the area. he helped us out with a few spots if we wanted to fishing the rest of the week. I wish I lived closer to Hunter Banks Fly shop, it's a great place with awesome people to deal with. If you're coming to the area, do yourself a favor and see these guys.

Had a fantastic time with HB fly fishing and our guide Miller. He was extremely knowledgeable and paid great attention to detail, we were very well cared for. For reference, our party has fished lakes for years but has never went fly fishing. Miller went into great lengths to explain the various techniques of casting and always saved us when we got snagged on trees and rocks. He knew exactly which flys to use in which parts of the river and we would catch fish almost immediately after listening to his recommendations. We went fishing in the middle of summer with warm water and still got a ton of trout thanks to Miller’s guidance. We also caught some monster trout(8-12lbs), easily the biggest of our lives. Would highly recommend checking out this company and guide if you are in town.

We had the best day fly fishing in the Tuckasegee River with Miller Watson! It was my partner’s and my first time fly fishing and we had the most incredible experience. We both caught tons of fish, including this beautiful 20” rainbow trout! Miller was an awesome guide. He was able to teach us the technique and put us on fish within the first hour of the trip. He even prepared us lunch on the side of the river! Could not recommend Miller Watson and Hunter Banks Fishing high enough.

I recently went on a half-day float trip with one of Hunter Banks' fishing guides named Miller Watson. I found Miller to be the best guide I've ever had. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of fly fishing, and is a terrific teacher- very patient and understanding. Although there were some big shoals (and other scary rock formations) on our river, Miller guided our boat through them with finesse and ease! Furthermore, Miller untangled our snarls, changed our leader and/or flies if needed, and scooped our fish out of the river- he basically catered to our every need! I would recommend Miller wholeheartedly to anyone- beginner to advanced- that wants to have a fabulous fishing experience! You won't find a better or more personable guide in this area!!

My friend and I had an incredible half day float trip with Hunter Banks. We went out to the Watagua river in Tennessee, which was about an hour or so drive from Weaverville, NC where we were staying. Our guide was Forrest and he could not have been more knowledgeable and kind. The two of us were more novice anglers and Forrest made sure we still caught fish...25 in fact! It was a bit chilly in the morning and Forrest came prepared with extra gear and hand warmers. Feel very lucky to have booked through Hunter Banks!

I made the call to hunter banks a few weeks ago in search of a sage x. I called 15-20 out of state fly shops and nobody had one in stock, luckily hunter banks did. I spoke with Shane for over an hour about the new setup i was looking for. He was very knowledgeable about the products i was looking for from personal experience. He took the time to understand how i fish and made suggestions on a whole new setup that would work best for me. I was never pressured or felt like I was rushed. The prices and customer service at hunter banks are second to none. I have never done on online review before but I felt like it was necessary in this instance. I would highly recommend hunter banks to anyone.

Highest possible marks for Hunter Banks and guide Chris Maney. From the moment I walked into the shop -- having never held a fly rod -- I was treated extraordinarily well. Shane Buckner gave me great advice on which trip to book for my first try at this, and Chris had me casting flies and hitting fish within a few minutes on the river. After several little fellas. we ended the morning with what I was told was thoroughly respectable brown trout. In truth, though that fish was a real thrill, but the instruction, the good company, and the setting on the Oconaluftee River would have been more than satisfying in any case. All equipment and communications were top notch and I cannot recommend the entire operation more highly. And Chris is in the top instructors/guides I've had in any discipline, ever. UPDATE AFTER SECOND TRIP: My second fly-fishing trip with Hunter Banks (indeed, my second fly-fishing trip ever) was a half-day float with Travis Brotherton on the Watauga River in Eastern Tennessee. Travis built on the skills I’d acquired on my earlier wading trip, giving me excellent instruction that soon had me casting a goodly distance and, more importantly, right on target. Knowing I’m mostly going to be fishing my home waters, Travis expanded my instruction to cover some skills that will be useful there. Travis was patient with me when I kept repeating an error (setting the hook on a Tennessee trout is NOT the same as setting the hook on a Florida redfish) and by the end of the day he had me squared away. Besides having an encyclopedic knowledge of the water we were fishing, Travis is a tremendously skilled oarsman and he expertly piloted his very-well-equipped Adipose drift boat, ensuring that we covered all kinds of different water safely. Importantly, he’s also great company for a beautiful day on the water. As before, everyone associated with Hunter Banks was friendly, professional and efficient and treated this brand new angler exceedingly well. Hunter Banks and Travis get my highest recommendation.

Booked a fly fishing day trip and wanted to look at equipment the day prior to my trip. The owner refused to sell me any equipment until I had experienced fly fishing. He said if I loved the experience then he would be happy to sell me a rod and reel. What a fantastic experience, where can you go nowadays where people are honest. The fishing experience was excellent, I was lucky to spend a day with Jason and his knowledge and experience is just excellent. I would definitely return to Hunter Banks in the future and ask for Jason.

What an incredible experience from start to finish. Hunter banks staff is top notch when it comes to taking care of their customers. I had the privilege to go on a guided trip with Miller today on the South Houston and probably had one of the best fishing days ever! I would highly recommend asking for this guide. He was a blast and you can really tell that he genuinely loves to put you on fish. I have been fishing for a little while now and I'll admit I still have a lot to learn. What a wonderful experience we had! My wife Lesa and I had never been fly fishing before and our guide Jason took care of all our needs. He taught us the skills we needed to catch and land a few Brookies, a Rainbow, and several Brown trout on the Pigeon River. Even caught a monster Brown that gave me one heck of a fight! Had a great half day wade trip with Jason. I’ve been out only a couple of times and was looking to improve my skills. He was the perfect guide for it; patient, encouraging, and had a goal of setting me up to go out by myself in the future. I appreciate the knowledge and his genuine passion for the outdoors. Cannot say enough great things about Hunter Banks! Booking the guided trip was easy. Our guide called us the day before our trip to give us more details and introduce himself. If you want to request a guide, ask for Jake! The trip was fantastic. The scenery was gorgeous, and the fishing was a blast! We had little fly fishing experience going into this trip, but that made no difference. Jake was an excellent coach/teacher, and he took us to several great fishing spots on the river. The entire trip exceeded expectations. My husband literally caught a trout on the first half cast. Many more were to follow! We HIGHLY recommend Jake and Hunter Banks, and we look forward to returning for a second trip this fall!

I just want to take a moment to update my review from earlier. After I posted my last review the manager reached out to me and we had a wonderful conversation and he went above and beyond.He asked that we give them another shot and his team has been absolutely wonderful to deal with in the process. They have worked with me to schedule and reschedule the trip again do to weather. Unfortunately, COVID has made it so that part of our party cannot go until later so we have to postpone our trip but I felt that I needed to update my review. Patrick and his team have redeemed themselves and we look forward to getting out the water with his guides once things settle down. **************************************************** I booked a full day float for me and my wife recently. Neither of us have ever done a float trip and she is very much a beginner with very little experience while I have fished for a few years. I was open about both of our skill sets when we booked the trip and asked for a guide that would be the best fit for us. On the day of the float the guide called us and asked if we would be okay changing from a full day to half day because there was a chance for bad weather that afternoon. We were fine making the adjustment and in hindsight we are glad we did. The guide we got was knowledgeable about the river but didn’t seem to have the patience or willingness to try and teach my wife. In fact she felt so discouraged that she sat down and didn’t fish for most of the day. I caught plenty of beautiful rainbows and was happy about that. But I wanted her to enjoy herself and hopefully catch a fish or two. I’m sure she is not the first beginner to go on a float trip. I would expect the guides to want to teach and grow the sport that they love and make a living from. But I guess that wasn’t the case with ours. Thankfully he didn’t put my wife off completely as she had her dad book a wading trip on the Davidson for next month but to do so with another company. I will say this though, I love the store and I would go out with them again but I would be very careful about who we got as a guide.

I recently moved to the area and as an avid fly fisherman I quickly looked up the local fly shops. The folks at Hunter Banks couldn’t be nicer and more welcoming. They were helpful getting me dialed in on my new local water. They have everything you would need as far as gear, flies and tying material. Been fly fishing many years. Never thought about water south of Pennsylvania. I thought it would be too warm. Boy was I wrong. Not only was it love at first sight fly fishing Western NC, but I hit the bullseye with Hunter Banks Fly Fishing of Asheville NC. My guide Jimmy Lackey started the day by showing up early. I love that. That enthusiasm lasted the whole day. We caught fish all day everywhere we went. He pointed to all these pockets and said put it there and I put it there and caught something probably 90% of the time. It was a rare pocket that didn't produce. If you are new to WNC I strongly suggest a guide and highly recommend Hunter Banks. The most important tackle you can bring to the stream is knowledge. Jimmy was spot on and pinpoint with his knowledge. One of the best fly fishing days I've had in my 33 years of this beautiful obsession.

This place is great. It was originally recommended by a friend. We drove up from Florida to fly fish for 2 whole days. There were 6 of us and everyone caught tons of fish. Among them were some huge browns and rainbows! It was so fun! We fished with Jason, Scott, and Bruce. All 3 were stellar in their knowledge of the area, the rivers, and the fish. We will be back for sure. Also. They are guite reasonably priced when I compared !

Hunter Banks is a phenomenal resource for Fly Fishing needs - whether you are new to the sport or a seasoned vet. Fully stocked store with everything you need to get started (rod, reels, flies, nets, line, leader, gear, etc and clothing!) - and the staff couldn't be more knowledgeable and friendlier. With regards to COVID-19 safety, Hunter Banks' response to the pandemic couldn't be more exemplary: all employees and patrons must have a mask on when in the store, a maximum of 5 persons other than employees to be in the store at one time, and regular cleaning of high volume surfaces every 2 hours. In addition to that, all employees get their temperature checked on a daily basis. So, all the necessary precautions are in place to ensure a safe and healthy shopping experience. Last but not least, I recently went on a trip with one of their guides and General Manager Patrick Brady. Had an absolutely amazing time learning new European Fly Fishing techniques while catching in excess of 25 trout: hooked on the trifecta of rainbows, brownies, and brookies! Not only was Patrick extremely knowledgeable and able to impart some invaluable trout catching wisdom on me, but was very professional, funny, and above all else, provided a safe and healthy environment during these strange times. I would highly highly recommend that if you want to have yourself an amazing time through this current pandemic (or when it's over), then enlist one of the many extremely knowledgeable and friendly guides Hunter Banks has to offer. And just so you know, I received no compensation for this glowing review - just my honest two cents, greatly aided by catching a barrel of trout, which I wouldn't have been able to do on my own!

My 12 year old son and I had an amazing day on the water with Jimmy at HB. Prior to this trip, neither of us had ever held a fly rod, much less tried to catch a fish. Not only was Jimmy a great teacher (my son caught a bunch of fish), but he clearly got as much joy out of teaching us as we got learning the sport. We will definitely be back again!

Top notch service! I recently moved to Asheville and wanted to start fly fishing. I grew up saltwater fishing but knew little about fly fishing. The staff at Hunter Banks went above and beyond to ensure I got started on the right foot. They got me set up with a great guide, Jimmy, who taught me everything I needed to get started. I had the pleasure to meet and work with Patrick Brady, General Manager, and the staff at Hunter Banks, in Ashville, NC yesterday. I have been in the market for a tight line nymphing rod for some time now. Patrick is extremely knowledgeable, patient and fun to work with. Patrick was with me every step of the way, we cast several rods, on a chilly and windy day, and narrowed down the decision process methodically together, based on my home waters, fishing preferences, and preferred applications. I couldn’t be happier with my choice and the customer service and individual attention that Patrick and the staff provided. I wish I could give more stars than 5. If all retails shops ran like this one no one would shop online ever again. I got fitted for waders and their expertise was amazing. I almost ordered online and I am glad I didn't due to my need for custom booties on my waders, 14-16 shoe. I have a trip coming up in two weeks with some of my friends who I haven't seen in a long time and needed them asap. Well the rush fee and shipping on custom waders is expensive and long, with no grantee it will arrive in time. Shane who works there offered his own waders as I wait on my get in. This is above and beyond, people who love to fly fish sharing and helping anyone and everyone get into the sport. Thanks Shane and you have a loyal customer in me.

I went out with Hunter Banks Guide Travis for a full day float trip and we had a great day of fishing despite the high water level. When I met up with Travis he offered me the chance to fish a portion of the Watauga and catch a bunch of fish or fish a different section and go for big fish. I choose to go after the big fish and we still put a ton of really nice fish in the boat. Travis was extremely knowledgeable of the river and knew where to find the fish. Even though I had previous fly fishing experience, Travis still helped me out and gave me some great pointers. We caught fish on plugs, nymphs, dry flies and streamers. This was one of the best days of fishing I have experienced and I can't wait for another chance to go out and fish with Hunter Banks again.

This place is awesome! Very well organized and very nice staff! As I looked around they even had saltwater flies and saltwater rods and reels. They have tons of fly tying material and a few fly tying kits. The only thing about the fly shop that could be a flaw Is the prices, but that would be it. The flies they have are very very well tied and look amazing.

i dont normally post feedback and not surprisingly i see positive feedback is not new to Hunter Banks but Patrick and his team went above and beyond for me recently and i wanted to share the experience as follows...i live out west and recently spent a week fishing 3 different rivers in Montana & Wyoming. ahead of time i went in to a local flyshop and purchased the new Simms G4 Vibram rubber wading boots (great boots by the way). I tried buying the cleats at the same time and was informed due to COVID all manufacturing had slowed/ceased and nobody had them in stock anywhere. so i fished w/o cleats which generally was fine but marginal in a few slick spots on the river. so a little internet searching led me to HB and i began to order. i decided to get a full set of both the Alumibite and Hardbite cleats...then the next day i realized i needed 10 for each boot / in each flavor so i went back in and made a 2nd order to get the correct quantity...then i was in and out of cell svc but was amazed when i got back in service to have received a voicemail from Patrick at HB wanting to confirm my order and check that i indeed had the new G4 boots (apparently common mistake made by others due to the G4 redesign). so Patrick's effort to confirm along with ultimately combining my orders and crediting back shipping charges as i'd now qualified for free shipping was that rare piece of customer service i greatly appreciated. lastly, i jumped back on and quickly ordered a set of the right angle heel inserts...same thing, Patrick recombined this final item with the prior 2 orders and shipped it all together in 1 box free of charge. He could have taken all 3 of my herky-jerky orders independently and not cared whether or not i had the right cleats, and charged me individually for shipping, but he didn't. My girlfriend bought me a fly fishing trip for my birthday. Neither of us had ever gone before, so there was plenty to learn. Jason Van Dyek was our guide and he was awesome. He is lessons were very easy to understand, and had us catching trout in no time. We both caught the "grand slam" of brook, brown, and rainbow on our 1/2 day excursion. If there were anything we regretted it was not paying for a full day instead.

My family booked a fly fishing trip with Hunter Banks and had a blast! We went to several rivers in beautiful WNC and caught tons of brookies, browns, and bows. Since there were four of us, we had two guides - Jason and Forrest - both of whom were very knowledgeable, patient, and personable. Three of the four of us had never even touched a fly fishing rig, but our guides were wonderful teachers. They had us fishing within minutes of wading into the water. You also have the opportunity to experience using top of the line waders and gear, so we even looked the part. Couldn't recommend Hunter Banks enough! We will definitely be doing this again!

Was looking for a lanyard for my trip to Wyoming this year. Had trouble finding a site that carried it and could get it to me on time. Found Hunter Banks through Google. Never heard of the shop before. Took a chance. The order qualified for free ground shipping. I left a note at the time of the order saying that I needed it within three days, and I asked if ground shipping would get it to me on time. Received a quick response after 9pm on the same day(!) that they would upgrade me to a quicker shipping option at no charge! Wow. This was a few months ago, but I made a mental note that I'd leave a review for them. The trip out west had special meaning this year as it was planned by my dad, who recently passed away. It was a little thing, but having a shop take care of me on a small order for an important trip was nice.

I had ordered a hat and the folks at HBFF emailed and said that there was a issue with my order. They stated there was a small dirt stain on the top off the hat and they did not want to ship the product with this blemish and offered to reduce cost and send it on if I choose this option. I do not know of any nor had any experience with any retailer who has gone through that much effort over a dirt stain. Most retailers would say ship it and see what happens! I appreciate the effort put forth and will be purchasing more product from these fine folks.

Great experience trying to find the new Saltwater wading boots from Simms for my Sasquatch feet! Size 15! HB gave great effort and communication ( both phone & emails to me personally) and contacted Simms in BOZEMAN to probably find and acquire the only size 15 in the country! Ha!
