Reviews of Second Gear
Huge second hand store for outdoor gear. Didn't feel like second hand at all. Great customer service. Various levels of discount on like new products. Plenty of dressing rooms available. Gelato place also inside in case you're interested in a sweet treat.
Fantastic place to score deals on well-used-but-life-left, gently used, and even a lot of new gear!!! Definitely NOT a pawn shop or a PlayItAgainSports... SecondGear is more for the outdoor enthusiast into hiking, kayaking, biking, snowstorms, etc.
I was visiting Asheville and visited this store with a full packing list for the Camino de Santiago, which I will leave for in about a month. I found incredible gear and the staff were so helpful. Jake took a lot of time to help me go through my list and provided me excellent recommendations. He was so patient and kind! I couldn't recommend Second Gear more!!
Awesome shop! Nice folks, good selection, good prices. Bought some cycling gloves, coffee and a chocolate chip cookie!
Stopped in to see there backpacks. Jake was on hand to help me out. He helped me talk and work through what I was trying to accomplish, and I left with a great new pack and sleeping pad. Thanks Jake!
Love this place so much! Great prices and the team is always so friendly when I consign stuff. The new building is lovely.
This place is just fantastic. The employees are ridiculously nice and helpful, not to mention knowledgeable and passionate about the outdoor activities they're selling equipment for. I *highly* recommend stopping here before the retail stores if you're looking for gear!
Always a great place to find some good stuff! I scored today!
Really awesome second hand outdoor shop. They had everything from backpacking to kayaking, climbing, biking, all sorts of winter gear/base layers and some skii outerwear as well. Definitely some good deals and I'll definitely be back!
Great little shop with new and consignment items. Dog friendly.
We're from Atlanta and stop by 2nd gear whenever we're up in Asheville. Think of it was an REI consignment shop. They have tons of gear from climbing to cycling to kayaking. It's all used and seriously inexpensive! Staff has always been knowledgeable and responsive!
I’ve had some outstanding help from staff members here. They are happy to help you and if something isn’t working, they will replace it. I had some hiking poles that stopped adjusting properly and a staff member replaced them for me. Glad this shop exists in Asheville! Also, great outdoor used shoe selection.
I went to Second Gear to begin my search for hiking equipment. I had no intention of buying anything today, I just wanted to look around. Because of the knowledge and great customer service from Jack, I now have almost everything I need to spend a week on the AT. He answered all my questions and gave me some great advice based off of his camping experience. I spent a lot of time hiking with a pack during my 22 years in the Marine Corps, but it was really nice to get some solid recommendations from Jack today. Thanks!!!
This is such a great place! I went hunting for rafting gear for my boyfriend and had no clue what to get and Colt showed me all the best things and was just incredibly helpful and patient with me not knowing anything about rafting loved my experience can’t wait to come back! Found a ten dollar rafting paddle! Like what a great price!!
Stopped by the new location in the RAD and found it underwhelming. The space feels dark and impersonal and lacks the warm feeling of the old store. There are fewer secondhand items for sale now and way more brand new, full-priced items. I miss the old Second Gear that was primarily oriented toward consigning and buying secondhand.
Good prices on new and used gear. The staff is friendly and very helpful. If you were a fan of the old frugal backpacker store, before they dropped most of the gear, this is the store for you.
I love this place. Great prices and great people. Shoes, tents, clothes, if you need gear this is the BEST place. Go!
My family loves Second Gear. We visit every single time we got to Asheville or the surrounding area, which is quite a lot! They have an wide selection of products, both new and used, all affordably priced. They are dog friendly and carry many different types of dog products as well. You can also consign gear there, which is a good way to give a new life to your old outdoor supplies.
A great local spot to upcycle gear or grab a few necessities for backpacking, cycling, or paddling. Sometimes it may be hit or miss if you are looking for something very specific. However, there is usually something extraordinary to take home. They also have an excellent selection of local stickers. Definitely worth stopping by.
Great selection of outdoor brands and they are dog friendly! :)
Found some great, secondhand camping gear here!
Great place to find gear. Found myself a pair of climbing shoes and a great hard shell. Go on occasionally just to see whats available.
I've always enjoyed supporting this business, it's like a thrift store for backpacking and related gear. They will help you to sell any relevant gear that you no longer need (I have done it many times) and I've also found great items here like pants, shoes, packs, water bottles and pretty much anything you could need related to camping or backpacking. They also carry a decent amount of new items but are mostly a used-goods store. I only have good experiences here!
Edit: I just returned to the store after deciding I wanted to buy a pack they had the other week. Initially I was sad when I realized that someone else had bought it, but I ended up finding an even better one at a lower price! I had a nice talk with the fellow, yet another cool experience :D
Best outdoor consignment and some nice retail too. Love the staff. One of our fave places in AVL.
There seems to be a trend over the past 12 months that your prices continue to get higher and higher and also the refusing of gear and clothing. Clothing I can understand, but you recently refused a Thule rooftop basket extension and I listed it on eBay and sold in one week for $75. I would have been happy with $20 which is what I figured I would have got from you. You may want to re-look at your pricing structure and review your business plan. Are you wanting to be a full price retail store or sell good condition outdoor gear at incredible prices.
We've only had good experiences at Second Gear. The staff have been cheerful and helpful. They don't always have certain items, but we've bought new and used things, and the gear was reasonably priced for the quality and apparent wear. I just bought two pairs of consigned pants and a jacket for my son. They're all in fantastic shape - they look like they've never been worn. I looked up the brands online, I discovered I had paid a third the cost of those pants new and half the cost of the jacket new. VERY happy with the pricing. Since the remodel, the store is also easier to navigate.
Second Gear is owned by a great group of guys. The store has a wide range of gear that will generally suit everyone’s budget and needs. The best part about it is you never know what you’ll find when you walk in. The consignment inventory changes daily. They always have the basics in stock (camp fuel, head lamps, ponchos, tent stakes, etc.) at retail prices that are competitive with other large retailers. There is a large parking lot around back that usually has a few empty spots. There are many restaurants nearby. I often see people stop by while they wait on a table. Second Gear hires intelligent folks that are good with customer service and knowledgeable about the outdoors. I highly recommend checking them first for all your needs. Buying used gear is a great way to cut down on consumer waste. You’re helping a local business, you’re helping the consignor selling the item, you’re helping a local charity that is chosen monthly, and you’re saving money. As a pro tip, that to many folks don’t know about, if you go to their website they have a real-time list of the consigned items that are currently for sale.
If you’d rather make money you can bring in your used gear for consignment. They will take half of whatever the item sells for if you decide to receive cash. They only take 40% if you choose to get your cut in store credit. In my experience if you have decent stuff it sells pretty fast, espically during tourism season.
It's like a way better version of play-it-again sports. This place has awesome outdoor gear for great prices. I wish I had known about this place a long time ago and probably would have a much thicker wallet. Also a great place to turn in your unused gear or technical apparel to get a few extra bucks.
Wish we lived closer because we’d be here often. Here on a Saturday and a number of product reps available to speak with about the various gear for sale. Like any 2nd hand store it is a hit or miss on what your find. We found this place a total hit!
I've had great experiences at Second Gear in the last two years. I've made more than $300 for items sold. It was great to do my Christmas shopping with the credit! The staff is friendly and helpful.
Dropped off something for consignment. I didn't realize they were consignment store. I was hoping they would just buy the item from me. But the system is easy to use so I left the item there. Very helpful staff
Second Gear consistently has such friendly employees, fair prices, and a wonderful atmosphere. I love this shop and vale it's importance in the Asheville outdoor community! Check it out when you're in town
This store is well organized, especially for a second hand store. The items are all high quality, and we were able to find some great deals. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well.
This place rocks! Tons of lightly used gear and clothes to outfit your next adventure. Staff was so helpful and had tons of guidance on the inventory as well as great advice regarding the area (on and off the trail).
Cool store, more room than the previous location. Employees could be happier, love that the store is clean and they take our items on consignment.
These guys are great! I've gotten a lot of quality items at their store, and they have sold some items for me as well.
I make it a point to stop in every few weeks just to see new items. Some great deals!
My friend needed waterproof hiking boots Chris gave her lots of info on choosing a pair that will work well. Not Mia looked up what IPX 4 meant about a headlamp water resistance. All in all a relaxed and informative shopping experience.
I was looking for used bike and accessories. I fortunately found one I am considering, but they didn't have any bike accessories. Lots of clothes and sleeping bags and hammocks and a few other accessories. Super duper helpful staff!
Trek 2300 bike I purchased at Second Gear is turning out to be more than I hoped for . I am amazed at how much lighter and faster it is than my old mtn. bike. And best of all I got a really good deal. Don't say my deals alway work out but this one appears to be a good one.
Nice place. Average gear and average prices for both used and new gear. Cool location.
This store is amazing!! Lots of fun gear here and so much to look at. The employees are knowledgeable and sooo nice!!
Sencond Gear is a used outdoor gear shop that you can sale your used outdoor items and buy outdoor gear for good prices. They have a wide variety of products from cycling to hiking along with many others. The employees are friendly and helpful. It is easy to see from the road and there is free parking along the side of the street. Haywood Road is a cool area with a lot of restaurants.
You never know what treasure you will find each visit. Prices are good and the staff is friendly. They are stocking the store with a lot more new gear recently.
Some friends and I drove up from Atlanta last weekend to climb Mount Mitchell. We reached the summit successfully on Friday, but one of our crew blew out a boot. We headed straight to 2nd Gear. Not only did he find a great deal on some lightly used boots, but the guys that worked there gave us directions to a great camp spot for Saturday night. I will be back and will proudly shill for them with their sticker on my Jeep.
Awesome staff and store that is well laid out and filled with some really great deals. I always begin with Second Gear for all my outdoor needs!
Long time customer - this place is great!
really nice people, helped me figure out how to work my camping stove ☺️ if i lived here i’d be a regular!
Super neat store! I definitely will be coming back. Friendly staff.
Solid new and used gear at a fair price. Good selection of items. Good staff. Help if asked.
Excellent new space. Lots more new stuff. Maybe (?) less used stuff.
Great selection of new and consigned gear and clothing. Helpful staff.
Nothing but good experiences here. They are some older gear in here and it's still functional, everything I've gotten there works. Staff is friendly and helpful. Just finished the remodle and looks great!
Great variety of new and used quality items. Staff is super helpful.
They have the hottest beefcakes behind the counter here, plus a great selection of used outdoors equipment. Prices are reasonable and the staff is knowledgeable. What could be better?
Great prices, friendly & helpful staff. Mix of new & consignment items. Wish I'd found it sooner
Very cool concept and an awesome place to find gently used outdoor gear for perfect prices. Staff was super helpful and friendly.
I would call this a pawnshop for anything that has to do with outdoor activities. They got bikes, clothing, shoes, accessories basically everything your regular outdoor goods store would have. Just with a mix of used gear, which is priced pretty fairly btw.
VHD
one of the employees; eric; replaced a broken tent pole for me. he spent like an hour working on it. so super friendly. kinda want to be friends with all of them. thanks again eric !!
Good selection of gear, dog friendly. Lot's of nearly new items.
Best outdoor second hand shop I've ever been to. It is a joy every time. Great customer service, too.
Great place to shop and consign!! Nice store with friendly staff and awesome gear, clothing and shoes. Parking can be tricky.
I was on my through town when my back tire went out. An associate was ready to help me get back on the rode immediately. He was looking out for me and for that I am appreciative.
Minimum selection of gear besides clothing. More affordable than other backpacking shops in the area, of course, but some things still seemed pricier than they could have - or should have - been.
Not cheap enough to dirtbag here but quality consignment gear and outdoor specific clothes. Great staff.
Love Second Gear!! Favorite local shop. The staff is always very friendly.
New Chacos for $30? Yes please!
Great prices on quality gear...shop often since inventory moves quickly. Excellent customer service!
Great selection of sporting gear and camping supplies, both used and new. Very friendly staff.
Excellent!! Super-friendly, knowledgeable & helpful staff, great assortment of gear at great prices!
Cool place, however, it was pretty expensive for thrift in my opinion.
Always stop here when I'm in Asheville. Great place to find used outdoor gear and unique stickers.
Always a great selection of clothes, great prices, and always friendly service. We love shopping here!
Dear Eric, Thank you for your help at closing. You were equal parts helpful and hilarious, and it was much appreciated. Thanks for serving the WAVL community with class my friend.
Yeah, it's well worth the visit.
I was looking for a specific item for an upcoming hike. The staff was very helpful to help me determine what would be best of their available current inventory.
Excellent selection of gently worn clothing along with manufactors seconds. New items too.

I love the concept: second hand + outdoor gear. I was in there for many hours finding items for my big adventure and all the staff were knowledgeable and went above beyond in customer service.
Perfect place to get gear on consignment or to even sell your own when your onto your next adventure. Everything ya need for camping, biking, frisbee golf, kayaking, you name it all at new or second hand prices. Staff is very knowledgeable and there’s even a small coffee / gelato shop in the back for some pick me up if ya need it. Right by the riverside greenway it’s a good stop if ya need something. Cheers!!
