Reviews of Chicago Union Station
Matthew Hall
Exceptionally well-maintained and beautiful classic train station building. I give this 5 stars for the building, grand hall and frills around the edges - esp. the SE staircase used for a well-known scene from the late '80's movie: The Untouchables. The holiday decorations were very impressive and all spaces were very clean. If you are into classic architecture as I am, combined with a dash here-and-there of art deco, be sure to stop in this station building and be amazed!
Now the underground Amtrak platforms... well that's a separate rating and way fewer stars.
Neal
This station is massive compared to most other Amtrak stations. Public transit is easy to get to, and you can walk over to the Loop in ten to twenty minutes. There are also taxis waiting outside. There are plenty of shops and restaurants, so if you're visiting Chicago in the winter and forgot to bring mittens or if you'd like some coffee, you can find it easily here. You don't need a ticket to access any part of this station, so even if you're not taking Amtrak, I still recommend checking out the station.

The station itself is beautiful and a cool experience after watching the Union Station clip of the Untouchables movie. Giving it a 5 star review for that reason alone. Downside is they are very strict with the 5 minute boarding dock rule. We got to the gate 4 minutes before our train left after getting caught up with dropping our rental car off and we still had to take the next train. If someone shows up a minute after take off after the train is pulling off then I understand but if the train is still sitting and it's before the take off time, why not let the passengers board. I get that it's in the process of leaving but it literally takes 2 minutes to jump on board and sit down so if there is still 4 minutes left, why not open the door and let them on. Other than that, the station itself is nice.

Absolutely beautiful architectural masterpiece! We came here to catch the Empire Builder Amtrak train to Seattle but I've always wanted to visit this station just to see its beauty in person. We arrived early enough so I could wander around the Grand Hall and study everything. You have to walk slowly and just feel the history of the building seep into you. You can't help but look up and around. I wasn't the only one there taking it all in. Even if you're not catching a train to anywhere, you really need to just step into this building and feel the history. It's well worth a trip to Chicago.

The station is beautiful and spacious. It's at the top of my list of favorite Union Stations(DC being pretty nice too).
I also just thoroughly enjoy riding on Amtrak(Empire Builder), especially when it's not too busy.
Dave Conard
I had a fantastic experience traveling Amtrak from Chicago to South Bend. The train was clean. Plenty of legroom plenty of seat room. I actually can’t wait to take a train again it was that good everybody was very helpful.
Dejan Braki
From outside Chicago Union station is a massive beaux arts concrete edifice.
I must admit I had no intention to visit it as I heard nothing wow about it, but a heavy rain forced us to seek shelter there.
The grand hall looked nice, reminding much on Grand Central in NYC, but much less crowded and not that detailed and far more ordinary.
Food court was disappointing with very few low key fast food eateries.
Nathan Boisclair
Conveniently located in the city center. Beautiful grand hall. Not many amenities. Not enough electrical outlets. Amtrak can take you anywhere in the country or to the airport that can take anywhere in the world. Not many food options. They put the bar back into the grand hall where you can get a beer for only $4

Chicago Union Station Connected all of other cities. It is a very beautiful station. A historic building made you feel like in the time travel at 5-60s. It has two kinds of services. One is the Metra, which is connected in the IL. The other is Amtrak, which is connected with other state big cities. Moreover, the office is friendly to answer you questions. The only sad thing is the CTA didn’t nearby. The only way is taking bus to here. Hoping one day, they can make this happen. Even this won’t be true. lol
Mark Tremel
Fabulous. I felt like I was in a movie from the 1940’s. The opulent grandeur of this railroad station stood in stark contrast to the soulless domesticity of the Amtrak train. But such a beautiful interior space! They really need to do more with it! Why not a restaurant or bar or cafe inside? There’s certainly enough room for all of them!! I think my favorite thing was the stairs they used in the film “The Untouchables”.
Augster O
This place is awesome. Old. Beautiful. If you’re traveling by Amtrak, take some time to look around the station.
Walking in off of Canal Street, you’re on the set of The Untouchables. All of the on-location filming is still there. The stairs, railings, marble, lights. All of it. It looked the same, I’m sure, when Capone himself was there.
Stop by and look around. It’s free. It’s still a functional train/bus terminal. And it’s still, over the top, ridiculously, comically, large from the floor to the ceiling. Check it out.

I haven't been here in a long time. It's a little difficult to navigate... I had to ask a lot of strangers a lot of questions. I did amtrack. And learned to look for north and south... none of the tracks were listed on the boards when I left around 800p. When I got to north I heard a brief announcement as to the track and tried to figure it out from there. I confirmed with someone when I got to the room. Everyone that I asked was very helpful and wanted to assist.
People line up around 20 minutes prior to departure. Overall an easy way to travel... there are several food options outside of union Station that are nearby

Union Station Chicago is an amazing place! Amtrak comes from all over the country here. If you are business class and above there is a great waiting area that is comfortable and lots of snack for free. They have a place to store your luggage and a front desk that can check you in. The main part of the original station has been featured in many movies and is spectacular. They have a food court, but it can be hard to find a clean place to sit.
Brittany Geise
I love the benches, the view, and the whole set-up. It's clean and very easy to navigate.
Mark Parks
A connection/teenager point for commuters and travelers in downtown Chicago. Big, airy and loaded with restaurants, small shops and kiosks to take care of your needs while you transfer or wait on your next connection. The Great Hall is a must-see area of the terminal!
Praharsh M. Patel
It is little confusing to find directions here!!
The great hall of the union station is a spectacular beauty of architectural marvel of the city that is also known as architectural city of the USA.
The general waiting area provides comfy space for rest and refresh with restroom and eater fountain facility available.
Shops are there to help with goodies and some food. A convenient location even for city hoppers who may want to take a break from scorching midwest summer afternoons!!
Michał Brzeziński
Very impressive architecture inside! Not crowded at all on Friday before noon. As a bonus it has nice free toilets
Dravencrow0
First time visiting Union station.
As beautiful as I've imagined it too be and as beautiful as I've seen it in movies.
David P. Fields
Typical of American infrastructure built more than a century ago, it is charming and inefficient. The Great Hall is wonderful and is a joy to wait in, but the signage and traffic flow leave much to be desired. Many intercity busses connect here, but good luck finding signs for any of them.
Terry Chu
The grandiose station building marks Chicago the city of architecture. It’s worth a tour to appreciate how the last generation built the USA
Jayson Slobodzian
Station is much larger than other Amtrak stations. The monitors display the terminal but not the gate number, once you find your terminal look around for the correct gate. Very spacious and clean inside.
Michael Gatien (MichaelG33)
This is a busy but excellent station with entrances surrounding Jackson Street, Clark Street, Canal Street, Adams Street and State Street. Have a wonderful selection of dining options including Dunkin Donuts, Quiznos, McDonald's and more. The staff are friendly and helpful; lobby chairs are a bit uncomfortable; but not going to let me stop that from having a terrific experience. So if I had a great time here, unless something goes wrong with your Amtrak or Metra train such as a delay or technical issue; you won't be disappointed.

I would like to bring attention to a particular gentleman, Clay M, who conducted the morning Saturday MDN train to the city from Fox Lake. It's so rare to meet such an exceptionally kind-hearted human being that it's absolutely worth mentioning (I just hope this is the best place to do so). Thank you again, Clay, for your kindness. I hope more aspire to be like you 🙂

The cleanest, most up-to-date, and spacious Union Station I've visited and, after traveling through Union Station in Los Angeles, Portland, and Chicago, I can testify from experience. The food court has fast food chains and local restaurant options, there are large signs throughout to guide visitors, and the lounge is well lit and comfortable.
Deb Turley
Union Station at Chicago is very nice. Nice...and HUGE. The architecture is beautiful. The lounge, which is free to those in sleepers is a great, but nothing fancy, place to catch your breath before boarding. There are complimentary drinks and snacks (which change quite often during each time I am waiting for my train) and multiple areas to sit or even lie down and/or watch one of the several TVs. Alcoholic drinks are available to buy. They offer a pretty good selection. There are also electrical sockets throughout to recharge your devices. You are led a "back way" for priority boarding and can request Red Cap service. As far as the trains I have used, each seat and sleeper car has electrical outlets. The bedroom car is perfect for 2 ppl, maybe even 3. Bedrooms have a private bathroom including a shower. Think an RV wet bath. The roomettes are great for 1 or 2. Showers are avail in each car. While regular seating is just fine, business class or a roomette is the way to go for any trip lasting more than a few hours. The beds are quite comfortable.
Patricia Stewart
Waiting in the metropolitan lounge to board Amtrak to D.C. Face coverings required in all station areas. Social distancing is being practiced in customer areas. Travel by rail seems to be less crowded than at airports. Safety first.
Rob Schnell
Amtrak police very friendly. Employees seem a little short, but will provide answers, guessing they get tired of the same questions every 2 minutes. 🙄 Good signage. Do NOT wait in line for the restroom in the food court area, many other options if you ask politely. …
Damien Stuckey
Friendly staff is always helpful!they go out of their way to help people. The only time I was disappointed was when the train left me but it was my fault for being late 😂. The washroom is always clean with no waiting. …
Adesoye Adeboye
Great place to get trains and buses going across the Country. It connects with different train services and buses as well. Easy to navigate.
Anthony Leroy
Union train is very convenient and the station has a beautiful architecture. Passengers are very easy to talk to and everybody is chating with their seat neighbour. This is something really appreciated by a french tourist, having Paris passengers as a standard reference. The place is surprisingly quite at night, making a contrast with downtown agitation.
Miles Jajich
The station overall is beautiful. Train service is frequent depending on the lines and days running. The station serves the majority of the Metra lines, including the Amtrak routes that start and end there. Everything is usually clean inside, and the staff working are very helpful.
Amtrak’s new Metropolitan Lounge was amazing. With two floors, there’s lots of space to take a seat and relax while waiting for your train. Complimentary snacks and drinks are available on the first floor of the lounge.
Dirk Waldrop
Wonderful old train station. Currently under renovation but doesn’t add too much hassle to a trip. The Amtrak terminal is great! We had a sleeper car so we spent our time hanging out in the lounge. The station itself has a very good food court complete with a sports bar. The concourse is well marked and it is quite easy to find one’s way to the proper train. Metra provides excellent service here as well. Even if you’re not traveling by rail, this is a great place to stop and see if in Chicago.
Graham
Clean and very easy to navigate.

This Central Railway is amazing not only because of its history but also because of the number of people who daily pass through this Central! and see the wonderful 🇺🇸 of the United States of America makes it an Icon! I hope they do not remove it again! If you are a tourist, you must come see it or simply come to know all the connections that this Central has with all the states of America the Great.

Union Station is so beautiful. Like a step back in time. It was worth it for me to come see all the Beauty this building holds.
So much history has happened between these walls and on these tracks. I'm not here as a traveler, Just a visitor.
Stormy Kara
A beautiful and fantastic downtown station with a decent range of food and shopping options, as well as access to CTA via buses across the street and Clinton Blue Line station a couple blocks down.
The Great Hall is a must-see, of course. It's one of the most beautiful Union Stations in the country I would say. Just don't rely on PA announcements while you're there, it's so echo-y you can hardly understand them. Not a huge deal though due to the Amtrak app and other timetables around the station.
Taking a star off because of the Amtrak boarding experience - the waiting area next to the gates is always full and crowded, and there's a lack of communication - many times I witness passengers confused as to where to go or board.
Niket Doshi
A very iconic railway station. Very clean and humongous. Had of first class treatment and experience. It's grandeur was very satisfying. A lot of amenities over here. I wish I could have stayed here for a long time. I was just in awe. Funny really have words to describe my experience
Joshua Crook
Cool place. Get the upgrade to a room and you get access to the lounge. Great place to wait for your train, snacks and drinks included. Very nice. Everyone is very professional and courteous.
Matthew Shultz
Beautiful , Certainly reminds you of what once was & what's to come . Really look fwd to the day of "Bullet Train Travel" why the U.S. isn't there yet is beyond me. Btw there's a huge restoration project going on at Amtrak an I'm curious myself to see how it turns out .
Amna Malik
I am constantly impressed by how hard the staff works to keep Union Station clean. I wish the city would make more of an investment in its train infrastructure. The staff do an amazing job keeping the station passenger-ready. Thanks so much for that.
Antaya Washausen (lingitsheshark)
Without question this is one of the most beautiful transportation centers I have seen! I spent more time looking up and around than I did anything else. If you enjoy architecture and gorgeous examples of fine construction I highly recommend you stopping in this terminal for an eyeful! That being said I found a few Amtrak employees severely lacking in the "social deportment" department: in simple words, MANNERS. Namely the Baggage/Lost & Found counters. I hate to say it but 'entitlement' lives everywhere these days and I was not impressed to stand and be made to wait while Amtrak employees chatted it up, leaving myself and an older traveler to wait even longer to interact with someone in the know AND receive basic customer service. The ticket counter staff in the terminal were very helpful as well as the gentleman in the info kiosk in the center of the terminal. Be prepared to wait and wait for polite assistance in the baggage claims area, but outside of that this terminal is a must see if you are using the train to get around vs. airplanes or driving.

We arrive in Chicago on Amtrak at Union Station for an overnight trip during Christmas vacation. A majestic old world building appropriately decorated for the Christmas season with a huge Christmas tree 4 foot ornaments and The Polar Express train.
ERROL SHAKES
One of the most popular station in the country very beautiful train and Transit station home to Amtrak and metra plenty of restaurant, coffee, bars and gift shop with ample security Numerous boarding gates from Van gauder to Megabus to greyhound I suggest you ask questions you can easily get lost
Mriganka T
It's a functional, well managed transit hub. As with other old Chicago buildings, this too has its own pages in history. Metra trains are timely, most of the times. Quite a number of places to eat. 5 *s if WiFi is made available! 👍 …
Renee Richter
I've taken the Amtrak from STL - Chicago several times over the years. It is generally timely and a comfortable, more affordable way to travel. The employees are rushed and not always kind, and they keep the train freezing cold.
John Matias
Staff and conductors were fantastic. Also custodial staff were wonderful!!
Stoufa Maaref
The station is beautiful however they need to improve lighting and a modern touch to the tracks area.
James Doc Hodges
What a great experience Except for a Occasional Rude Amtrak Employee. Food Court is AWESOME while you waiting for your train.
Yvonne M
This place is beautiful and clean. It's also busy and confusing (and I'm a seasoned traveler). We arrived here for our return Amtrak train to Minneapolis. I have the Amtrak app so I had everything I needed. I arrived at the station, checked departure gate and proceeded to gate. Easy right? WRONG! I followed the signs to gate to arrive at a roped off hallway. An attendant there told me I needed to check in with the agents back in the main area of Union Station.
I went to main hall and checked with agent. This is where it goes from annoyance to mind-numbing "HUH?" status. She told me to take a seat and listen for my train number. Then, and only then, I should proceed to her desk to line up single-file, where she will escort us to the gate area. Yes, like the little pre-schoolers you see walking through museums with their buddy holding hands in a single line.
My train number was called about 15 minutes prior to departure. About 200 of us were lead circus-style down through the terminal and halls to our gate. We lined up next to another long line of people traveling on our train, but disembarking at a different stop. Our line was then led out along our train for boarding. The entire process seemed a little dramatic. The staff st the station are similar to airport employees. They have seen it all and are in no mood for nonsense.
Chandra Shekhar Rao Pathki
A very busy station which I liked. Clear instructions or board signs. Several departure and arrival boards are available. Though the place is crowded, I couldn't see queues at all in the station to purchase the tickets. Self ticket vending machines were available. Staff were supportive and friendly. Only concern I had was there were no enough chairs or benches to sit near the track.
Scott Musial
This Metra Station Is Cool And Not Crowded
And Get To Use the Red Seats Anytime On the North Central Service
and it smells good and most of the food court is restored and Looked at the new Chicago Union Station Hall was Restored
Tony Wright
Had a wonderful experience in the Amtrak Lounge. It was my first time taking a train so I opted for business class, which gave me access to beautiful accommodations, free wifi, complimentary snacks and beverages. Very pleasantly surprised.
damon peters
It was cool. Beautiful old building. Amtrak ticketing to Milwaukee was very easy and painless. The only trick was figuring out the gates didn’t have good signage, so I didn’t know if I was in the right place or not. No biggie, just asked the locals.
Lana Scherer
Beautiful historic building and the central location is wonderful. More signage directing arriving Amtrak passengers to the taxi area would be helpful. I never realized there were shops, again, more signage is needed.
Nich
Transpotation in here a little noisy, amtrak gather together their customers at the main lounge and it is really unfocus for customers. But most of all, the station is good decoration for Christmas
Nessa Vahedian Khezerlou
Restrooms were clean, nice food court. Great Hall is beautiful.
Jeffery Mead
Classic American train station. Well maintained, clean, variety of food/beverage options on site and nearby. Has a beautiful Metropolitan Lounge.
Tom Moloney
Great active train station. Commuter trains and long distance Amtrak. Plenty of shops and restaurants.
Corliss Chappell
Big place variety of places to eat from McDonald's to organic eateries. Amtrak, Greyhound and the city's public transportation stops here. It's always a cab, Uber or Lyft circling around outside. The station police have dogs that may or may not come by and sniff you and your belongs. You'll be placed in a waiting room called the Great Hall for Amtrak riders. Lockers for you luggage can be stored in lockers for $10 .00 but the lockers are very small.
Jacqueline Moleski
I've gone through Union Station to travel on both Amtrak trains and Metra (Commuter Rail) trains. Although the station is huge, everything is well marked and it's easy to find your train. I used Metra this past weekend several times (I had a weekend pass) and the conductors were awesome - letting us know where our stop was on outbound trains and helping other passengers too.
The Grand Hall for Amtrak is also not to be missed even if your not traveling by Amtrak train.
Alexander Scott
Everything was on time, service on the train was great. Minus a star because the staff at the station didn't have the right priorities, they'd rather rush you along and get to the next customer rather than make sure they answer your question. Time is money but make sure you're doing your job efficiently as opposed to just brushing people off. So the recommendation is, if you have a question then be short and to the point, they won't put up with more than that.
shakil hossain
Thank you soo much to the Amtrak officer at Chicago Union Station who helped us catch our 4pm train to Flint, amtrak 364 (had 4 mins to gate closure). Wish we had a chance to catch ur name. :-( .
If everyone lives upto the example of this gentleman, amtrak will keep on having my loyalty as a customer.
Taneika L. Head
It was a nice station. The construction in the main hall leaves much to be desired and they definitely have a homeless problem. Food horribly overpriced(no surprise) and the cleanliness of the dining pavilion left much to be desired. I was thankful I had a sleeper car and was able to sit and wait in the Metropolitan lounge.
James Mitchell
It's a very nice train station I wish it had more veriaty of fast food restaurants in the food court the grand hall is amazing
Paul Johnson
A beautiful train station in the Loop (the heart of downtown Chicago) with Amtrak and Metra rail services. Very spacious but not an incredible amount of things to do.
Belle
Was under construction with a slightly confusing layout once while I was there, and the size of the place can get confusing, but overall a lovely stop.
Tom Bazan
Main hub for Amtrak in and out of Chicago. Downtown is generally walkable, if the weather cooperates. Recent renovations have changed the flow of passengers recently, but Amtrak staff have been able to provide directions. There are a few restaurant and bar options, depending on what you want and have time for. It's not hard to get turned around, but it can be helpful to know where you are in relation to the great hall (a beautiful room by itself).
Michael Alan
I have had only one problem at Union Station. I accidently left my tablet on an Amtrak train. I called a few times about it and they Kept telling me they don't have it .
So I tracked it verified it was still in Union station. They kept denying it. But strangely enough they wanted my pass code to get into it. Why would you need that if it is not there. Took a trip to union station . Kept asking security where is lost and found.. Apparently they have no clue Kept sending me all over the station. Found lost and found and lady behind the counter was to busy talking to a friend on the phone. I did get to talk to a supervisor and he said she will find it when she is done . She got off the phone and just sat on her ass. After a few more minutes of waiting I got her to get off her ass. she waddled off to basement. She found it , Made me punch in code and went on my way

The review is for Union Station Chicago, Shoe Shine and Repair. I was told there is an awesome man, who does an awesome job of shining boots. My poor little boots must have looked bad so I went to the shoe shine station. A gentleman named Miguel serviced me. This man did not just brush my boots off, he cleaned them. Miguel did not just put polish on my boots, he waxed and buffed them also and not just once! Sitting there watching Miguel I was impressed, this isn't just shoe shining, this is a skill...an art, Craftsmanship at its best! Check him out, you will be pleased! Thank you Miguel!
Charlie Chapman
I found everyone amazingly helpful. Not only is the grand hall beautiful, but the whole station is great if you have a little time between connections. The downtown location is so handy for all the great things that Chicago has to offer too. I hadn't ridden a train in 30 years and found it so pleasant compared to flying.
Ian Ebler
I use the Fox Lake line to Chicago from time to time for personal trips. I'm not a daily commuter, but I have not had any issues in Union Station. I think the food court is pretty good too. My only comment is that on the block of the station in Chicago, it can be a bit chaotic to snag an Uber or a Lyft. You might have to walk down a block or two to make the exchange smoother
Wayne Hall
First time there. Clean and quiet experience.
C Thomas
Great place to catch a train. Across the state, across the Midwest or across the country.
David Mustico
Lots of food options. The smoothie place was awesome. Easy to find everything. Would give a better review if the locker rentals were easier to figure out and gave you unlimited access. Amtrack area when you have sleeper cabin or business class is great. I upgraded to sleeper before heading to my destination and was treated like royalty. Got a shower, free snacks and coffee and a place to relax.
Elina Zhuravleva
The railway station where the trains are stationed is, of course, ugly, but the building itself with the waiting rooms is very beautiful! The staff is helpful, everything is clean and comfortable.
Samantha Smith
Make sure you know what you're doing and where you are going because if you try to stop someone and ask for help, you'll more than likely to get a very short, rude and unhelpful answer. This wasn't just from a single person either. Place is clean and organized. Lots of food options if you are hungry but not too much sympathy If it's your first time on the train
Khufu Haki
People that work there were friendly and helpful .. There Union Station is very eclectic and beautiful
Erika C
Excellent service, clean station and info everywhere. These are some pictures from Union Station, Chicago and also some picture from the menu and dishes in the train.
Misch
Very nice train station, great architecture, and in a great location as well.
ChristOpher More
;Unfortunately I had to leave my two golf equipment/clubs behind at the xxl Christmas tree in the lobby of Union station by the soccer player wearing Sambas
william
Honestly a beautiful station, just some parts could be maintained better. The lounge is clean and is a wonderful place to stay during a long layover.
Nisa
Chicago's Union Station is ready for Christmas!
Melody Cherrette
Absolutely love coming to this train station it's beautiful inside and there's so much to look at
R Scott Weaver
One of the most beautiful stations in the country and getting better all the time! The Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge is the best in the country bar none!
Rick Fox
Clean, but because of the homeless, ALL the electrical outlets are locked, so charging phones is a real problem.
Bring your own battery or solar powered charger.
Yimin Zhu
Finally arrived after 52 hours from the west on Amtrak! It is an element station with pretty dome. They also provide WiFi. I enjoyed my stay here. See you tomorrow, Union Station. Then I will continue my trip to the east until New York.
Kyle
The size of union station can be intimidating but the layout is logical and makes it simple to get where you need to go. The interior is gorgeous and is always makes the morning commute that much sweeter. Joked with a staff member about the size of my backpack which actually made me laugh out loud, awesome guy. Travel through here without hesitation.
Don Howard
Iconic station built in early 1900s. Metropolitan lounge for 1st class and sleeper car passengers is pretty good. Snacks, coffee and soft drinks. Disappointed that there are no recycling bins.
Julie Gallivan
The great hall area is beautiful! The staff was helpful and polite.
Trish K
Beautiful architecture. Currently under construction. Crowed. Restrooms were cleaner than expected.
Savannah Crittenden
Please get there at least an hour early it is unlike any other Amtrak station in size. Lines can be extremely long.
Melissa McCauley-Burow
Rail transportion is so convenient, relaxed and comfortable. No long lines for security, incredibly affordable rates and comfortable seats with plenty of legroom. Plus, wifi and electrical outlets. Amtrak is easy to schedule. As for Union Station in Chicago...they have friendly staff, the great hall is gorgeous, and the process is easy to navigate. The Great Hall was renovated several years ago and is simply stunning, with ornate details, pillars and a beautiful skylight ceiling. We have had multiple visits to Union Dation and have always had a pleasant experience. Rail transportion...truly an economical, safe and comfortable way to travel.
Manuel Gallegos
Absolutely beautiful structure. Very festive with this enormous and beautifully decorated tree in the center. Anything you could want while waiting for your next part of your journey is within walking distance. From delicious gourmet food to spa's and malls. Great job Chicago.
Huy Tran
Great big station. You should check out the food court, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald and almost everything you need before a long rail trip are there.
Mark Priddle
First time on Amtrak from Chicago Union Station. Easy to get around, helpful staff, on time departure.
Luiz De Oliveira
Beautiful arte deco building worth a visit if you are in Chicago. Many movies had scenes filmed here.
manoj sabale
Beautiful building. Worth visiting if you are in Chicago.
HollisAnn King
With a 1st class cabin we were privileged to wait in the newly remodeled Acela Lounge. It was Christmas and the brightness of the new decor and holiday decorations made this an easy several hour wait for the Capitol Limited.
Brock Bain
No problem so far. If you think your senstive to changes in basic motor motion activities like walking on a eletric stairs (dont renmber what is called) i wont recommend it. For me atleast it was too fast id recommend taking stairs instead.
Iliya Petrow
Awesome historic station in the heart of Chicago. I’ve commuted to the city for 6 years for school and work and took the metro every day. The station does a good job of shuffling hundreds of thousands of people every single day. Sometimes you get delays but that’s part of life. In terms of cleanliness, it’s ok. They could do a better job of making the station look more appealing instead of just tons of concrete everywhere.
The food court has some options. I’m a fan of the Starbucks that was added a bit ago. I’ve also taken Amtrak a few times and it was an ok experience.
One thing to note is that it can get hectic during rush hour. Tons of people walking in congested areas is not fun. Also beware of the long lines to get a last minute ticket. I would recommend using the ventra app on your mobile.
Michael Lee
Love the speedy response to customers. And it's December 19 holiday time😃 FREAKING LOVE IT!!! …
ARIEL ZMIJEWSKI
Took Amtrak many times now. Always had a good experience. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Place is always neat and clean
Michelle Glavor
Just made me feel at home even though it's a big station. I was able to easily navigate the downtown and waterfront. In two opposite seasons!
Paula Hall
Probably the best place to buy your food in Chicago!! Only 3 people in front of me at Chick-fil-A. Starbucks was $2 less!!
alejandra harrold
It sure is an amazing place to visit. You have the newest building with the old building. This place is always busy!
Mike
Train always gets me where I need to go on time so much better than driving downtown You beat having to pay for parking and deal with traffic You definitely want to travel with the metra
Matthew Bartmanski
Always love riding Amtrak.
Debra Westbrook
Nice train station with all the amenities... Impressed being that Amtrak in Detroit downtown don't have anything in it but a door to get to the train
Steve Overton
Customer service was excellent workers was pleasant when it came to helping the elderly. They came and picked us up in a cart and took us where we needed to go.
Katarína Kmeťová
Station is very pretty, absolutely worth visiting just for sightseeing. It is well organized, clean and easy to navigate in. But make sure to come few minutes before your train, since you will wish you had time to take some pictures if you won't ;)
SHANNON GROSSMAN
What can I say about Chicago's Union Station? The bums need to look us in the face better one hit me up twice to hear me say NO. I was harassed and ticket checked by police twice during my eight hour layover yet when I asked these same tax dollar paid police to quit the bums from bothering me they rolled their eyes at me. So be prepared for it I has no less than 8 hit me up during my stay. Under construction so don't expect photos. More people flow through here than I have ever seen in my life. Great experience pricey if you need to eat so hit the McDonalds for food. People watcher's paradise.
Caroline Reid
Chicago Union Station was the beginning of a Great Vacation.I boarded the Empire Builder Dec 11 2021 enroute to Seattle and San Francisco. What a Grand Station. On this Day the Polar Express was leaving the station. I saw Families dressed in matching pajamas for the ride. If you could have seen the smiles on thier faces. I spent time in the Hospitality Room before boarding it was very clean. The Red Cap service was very helpful with the luggage. The food court was reasonably priced. I enjoyed my stay in Chicago.
Judy Howard
If you enter a wrong side of the entrance there is no escalator or elevator available so you can haul your luggage easily. Check in counter have no tags and they had a problem printing my ticket out.
William Nexsen
Nice and clean place very impressed I'm from SC passing throw
Adam Paul
...Very Ornate.....i love just hanging out in between my travels and just admiring the amazing architecture of this historic building =]
Rob Ryan
Absolutely beautiful Station, unfortunately the signage is not very good and it was very confusing trying to figure out where exactly I was supposed to go!
Michael Updike
Layout can be a bit confusing until you've moved around it a few times. Otherwise clean and usually well staffed.
Topher Smith
It's always a beautiful train station and this time was no exception. Everything went smoothly as I started my trip on Amtrak from Chicago to Los Angeles. Even checking luggage and getting help with a few things was a breeze. 4 stars instead of 5 because the rest rooms needed a little attention, which really should be expected in a big city train station. Lots of options for food and drink. Including the Snuggery, a double decker bar that's always fun to stop at for a quick drink between trains, or just because. All in all one of the better train stations I've been to in my travels around the U.S.
Rachel Stenta
Easy to park and easy to rent a car. Beautiful great hall. Clean and well attended bathrooms. Overall a nice experience.
David Sultan
Easy to get to from O’Hare. Relatively clean. Make sure you plan ahead during COVID- the food choices are limited as several places are closed.
Kesean Walker
Train hub and sometimes an event destination. Beautiful architecture inside and outside. Tourist attraction. U can catch Metra and Amtrak trains in this location. There are also shops and a restaurant corridor inside.
Sticky Lips
Not a whole lot to fo here!
But it is s nice station!
Ben Schnose
The station is very well kept considering its size. The signs are clear and make it easy enough to find out where you're going. The great hall is very spacious and pretty. There's not much to do inside so we wandered Chicago while we waited for our next train.
Western Ohio Interurban History
I know this is a wonderful train station, and a very important piece of railroad history, as well as Amtrak's most important station. But HALF of the station is missing. The original concourse building was demolished in 1969, and replaced with ANOTHER skyscraper. It's not like we have a lot of those already! Still a wonderful station though.
Norah kh
One of the most beautiful Christmas tree in Chicago ♥️😍 …
Savitri Harris -aka Kimberly
Excellent staff and offers the option to purchase a day pass for the Amtrak Lounge for $35. Individual shower rooms, complimentary snacks, several seating areas with televisions and large comfortable couches and chairs, and business center areas equipped with charging stations, wifi, access to printers, etc. There is also a secure storage room for luggage, a welcome relief if venturing out into town while on a layover. Red Cap service arrives for each announced departure adding to the stress-free negotiation through the busy terminal. This is one of the finest transit hubs I've had the pleasure of experiencing, truly first rate.
Michelle Nastasis
Above all else - USE RED CAP ASSISTANCE! Especially if you are traveling with your family or are elderly or handicapped
Independently Blonde
Be prepared to be surrounded by tons of people boarding the trains from all over. You will encounter either nice or very rude people here. Amtrak employees overall have been very helpful despite the thousands of people boarding the trains & buses. I literally almost broke down crying cause there is too much going on. It's crazy & I mean It is my first time in Chicago after all. Get yourself a hotel or a place to stay but don't hang out around the station too long unless you need to board. Explore the city & get away from all the craziness.
5 stars to the hard working employees, Thanks!
J Goodwin
Coming from the Midway airport it was easy to take the Orange line. Walk a few blocks and then into the station. Amtrak has a great lounge for those in a sleeper car. Train was right on time. Boarding was a bit chaotic but sleeper cars were boarded first. Sort of felt like in an unground dystopian movie.
Tommie G Anderson
I am there involved in sharing the good news from the Bible and its a safe place with high traffic volume.
Dhinesh B
Historic and wonderful station for travelling to suburbs and also for travelling to east and west coast of USA. This Is yeah hub for the midwest and people travelling from east to west via train mostly how to halt in this union station. It has wonderful area for resting and more than 20 platforms launch coffee shops restaurants and lot of entertainment activities they have a dedicated baggage claim for long distance trains. The building is one of the historic place in USA. The main hall will give you a wonderful view. They even have a rental car place and also very much connected to city with transit system
Shruti Powers- Khandelwal
Love the architecture and especially after the restoration of the interior walls. Love the main waiting area with vault ceiling and interior decorations tens to change with seasons/festivities. Nice busy food court on the second floor. Restrooms on the first floor (don't know if they are on the second floor as well). As a Vegetarian it's hard to find something good to eat... Tried pret a manger once. Enjoy!
Elad Silberring
Very nice place big with lots of sitting area and good Wi-Fi plugs are available to charge your phone a nice small shop for small snacks and drinks the hall here is amazing especially in Christmas and Hanukkah there are lots of beautiful decorations a huge American flag really cool window roof it's like one of those really really old building that are really cool just to stare at but I guess it's cooler if you drink a little beer before starting. If you found this review helpful please hit the like button
Shreyam Taneja
The station inside is huge with spacious seating areas and a tall roof. I went there during Thanksgiving and it had already been decorated for Christmas and looked amazing.
Sid Shah
The great hall is amazing but the platform/boarding area is sad and depressing
ADHDKetchup
The most characteristic pigeon 🐦 kept me company for a 6.5hour layover. He was so funny. Employees are helpful and courteous. Bathrooms are usually very clean. And serviced very regularly. Bring snacks. Food court is a bit small, Starbucks is clean and they make a good oatmeal and chai latte. …
Chatrasi Ravisrinivas
I had a good experience travelling through Union station. Many food options and great waiting halls. Spent sometime appreciating the Greek style architecture in the waiting hall. The thing I like the most is: this place is located in the heart of Chicago city. Wills tower, Chicago Art institute, Grant Park are just few blocks away.
one random tip: get a Ventra pass at the vending machines if you plan to explore Chicago. Public transport is the best way to get around
James Willcox
Beautiful architecture. Clean. Good food and shops.
Gabby Johnson
In my experience, I found every Amtrak member courteous and helpful. Union Station is very clean, and is a pleasant place. The decor during the holiday season was a really nice addition, and the Grand Hall was truly amazing. The entire building itself is huge! So many places to go inside. When I first arrived, it was more like an airport than a train station. Union Station has so many accommodations including a decent lounge to wait in (or sleep in) and vending machines, a food court area and a gift shop/convenience store.
Eddie Garza
It very easy to get there you have CTA bus / metra/ Amtrak all in one . Very well planned
Sheila Handke
Had 4 hr. layover, got a day pass for METROPOLITAN LOUNGE. Very nice
Matej
Very nice train station. Easy to access and nice staff.
Connie Schultz
This place is absolutely beautiful! Architecture is incredible! For $25 they hold your luggage, offer showers, refreshments and a lounge area during your layover. And you also are able to board first! Only thing- you have to speak very quietly or you will be asked to lower your voice.... 😁😉 …
Matthew Umanos
Just to see all the history and was cool to catch a train from the main hall
Ahmar Wolf
Pandemic or not I give the staff the highest praise. You got a problem instantly fixed. They make traveling as easy as possible. The station meanwhile has a good selection of both shops and restaurants.
James
I've been here 3 times now. The staff is friendly but the most importantly thing i have to contribute is me stressing the importance of staying safe while you are there. Leaving out the front door can surround you with a barrage of local drug addicts/homeless people hitting you up for money and cigarettes. They pretty much just prey on commuters. Beware. BTW, cigarettes upstairs are 17 dollars.
Jeremy
A bit of a dump on multiple levels
Mirosław Siemieniuk
Its an efficient and in addition old wonderful train station.
Jessica Shaw
Very clean for being a super busy station. Most every employee is kind, helpful and in a good mood. Conductor and ushers joked with passengers and helped anyone that needed it.
yitz weiss
Beautiful ancient building.
Really efficient and organized 👍 …
David Cantalupo
Massive facility. Very clean and mostly easy to navigate
Ryan Gippner
Union station is a great and historic place, easily laid out and there are always Amtrak staff around to ask questions. More importantly, I have ridden the train more than a dozen times since the start of 2019 and every single one has been early or on time. I cannot express how impressed I have been with Amtrak in the last 14 months or so! It’s a great option for transportation around the country and you get to see things you’d never be able to see flying or driving! I am very impressed, so thank you Amtrak!
Grace Gravestock
Beautiful, classic station. Get there early! My 6:40pm train boarded around 6:10pm.
Beggars Pizza is just a two-minute walk outside, may be a better option than what's inside. I actually didn't see anything open inside and was grateful that I'd noticed the pizza place on my way.
Kylie Wiens
I love how beautiful it is!! It truly treat to just sit and look!! I will say one downside is that where you disembark is quite a walk to the main area of the station! And they won’t allow anyone to come meet you at the train to help carry luggage... but they have a very good selection of food and everything you need!!
Garrett Morgan
What a great station that is full of history! I love to people watch while I am waiting for my train to depart. The food options within the station are also very good. The staff, while apparently overworked, are friendly and easy to get along with. I also like the increased security staff presence in the station along with the K9 addition. This definitely makes me feel more safe.
Debra Wiedemann
We were able to store our luggage here for the day (our train was not departing until 9:30 pm) so we could continue to sight-see!
The Metropolitan Lounge was very comfortable and relaxing while waiting for our trains departure!
Prasad Surve
Visiting Union station for first time and it has been a very good experience. All the tracks are easily accessible and very well marked. Enough train information display boards. A good food court. The main hall is beautiful decorated for holidays.
Joe R
Union Station has gotten better in the past decade, but still needs help. So much of it is a jumbled mess after years of changes to the original design and increasing use of commuter traffic. If you know the routes through the station, you will be fine. However, if you are coming in for a first visit, be sure to allow yourself extra time to navigate the facility.
The reserved Amtrak lounge is a vast improvement over what was there a couple of years ago. While farther away from the platforms, at the same time Amtrak keeps riders informed and will assist.
Daniel Garepis-Holland
Great station and lovely Amtrak lounge!
Merissa
Beautiful station, but hardly any restaurant in the food court is open.
Shannon R
Large and beautiful train station in Chicago. Was here for several hours for a layover, traveling alone. All the staff I encountered made my wait comfortable. There is a great selection of cafes, restaurants, and little shops within the station to help pass the time and get a bite to eat. The architecture at this station is stunning!
SoonLee
Its huge and I love the friendly pigeons walking around inside.
Ranjit Batth
Loved my experience here! Great ambience, exceptional Service, and amazzzzing Sushi! Best sushi I’ve had in the city! Will be coming here again!
Christine Lorraine
This review is regarding the Legacy Club, which charges to allow passengers to relax in a beautifully appointed room with architectural brilliance. It is money well spent! The staff are wonderful, the rooms are stunning and you also get to board your train first. Did I mention it includes wireless service? Spend time here every trip to Chicago. Consistently a great place.
Robin Mordini
I love the historical aspect and the architecture especially in the great room but it's confusing if you've never been there before where to go. The food is all chains and fast food for the most part. It would be nice to have more variety. Great for people watching. Sometimes there's even events in the great room.
Joe Gates
A bit confusing after the first couple times through, but most of the large train stations can be that way. The Great hall is beautiful, well lit and has plenty of seating. Station is in a great location, easy access to all of downtown Chicago.
MarsR1970
Amtrak staff absolutely, incredibly helpful. Helped me get on the train that I was about a minute from missing..and other times I have been through there, it's been generally clean and well lit. Some renovations going on at the time I was through, but they manage to get everyone through the station. Red Caps are incredibly friendly and the personnel in baggage went above and beyond the first time I went through and there was a mix up with my checked bag. Had it in hand before the end of the day, couldn't think of a nicer person than the lady who helped me get it back.
Stephen Draper
No complaints. Good service. Well organized. The food court has plenty of options as you wait for your ride. Rush hour can be a bit crazy but this is a major station and business is to be expected. Love dropping down from Milwaukee to Chicago as it drops you walking distance from downtown.
David S.
Beautiful station but they make you stand in line 30 minutes before your train is even ready to board
Christopher Miller
It's a beautiful old building that they're trying to revive. Some great progress so far. Now, if they could only get the Amtrak lounge on the North side refreshed. Nice selection of eating and drink options.
Matana Weaver
I never visited this place before they revamped their boarding procedure, but I can definitely say what they do now is working. It is a tad overwhelming when you're listening for your train to be called and you have their music playing, their kiosks with emergency info playing, and people having conversations everywhere, but you should be able to pick out a relevant word or two and if not, when you see a flock of people swarming to form a line one of them can tell you.
I had visited a couple smaller stations (one really rural with no staff anywhere, like a ghost town) and surprisingly CHI was the simplest and least confusing, so if you're worried about that because it's a huge loud hub of activity, it'll be fine.
I did get lost when I first went in, but staff are helpful and by the next time I was there I was way more confident in navigating it. Just bring a book or something if you have a wait, it could be longer than expected and you'll be able to enjoy it.
Really great piece of architecture too.
Mercedes Fisher
Noel gave me excellent service so I could get to another track to meet the train with heavy luggage etc. He was kind, a good driver of the cart, smart, helpful and professional. Thanks for making my day and an excellent trip on the train. Well done. I will recommend to friends and family.
Jason Sides
The station is very nice. There are dining options, comfortable seating areas, and things are conveniently marked. I also saw were the untouchables seen was shot. The bathrooms were not well maintained, the station needs repair, and the people asking for money and yelling at me inside did detract from the overall atmosphere. As a result, I am removing one star. I also did not include any reference to Amtrak or Marta because they are not the only ones working out of this station. Critiquing the station based on their performance seems a little unfair. Still, an overall positive experience.
Emily
Almost every time I come here I'm impressed at how organized they are. They have everything figured out, and it's nice to have so many food selections upstairs. Best large amtrak station in the US, as far as I can tell. Just be at the gate at least 15 minutes early or you wont make your train
Sy Guzman
Architecturally speaking, Union Station is amazing! You can even contact the Chicago Architecture Foundation for a tour of Union Station and the surrounding area. Check their website for details! I also like the Amish who sometimes sell their food at the station. They are really sincere and the women always smile when you make eye-contact.
I appreciate that I can grab McDonald's at the station really quick and jump on my train.
But it bugs me having to walk through bums at the entrance of the train station. They are always there & always asking for money. Being asked for money makes me feel uncomfortable. While Chicago Police does their best to keep them out of Union Station, there was one time a man asked me for my change as I walked out of McDonald's with my food in one hand, my purse and cell phone in the other.
I just want to be left alone to catch my train.
The homeless shelters in & around Chicago offer food and shelter. No one has to be asking me for money.
Jeff Wegel
Chicago is a beautiful city, so it would make sense that the train station have that historical feel to it. Everyone is nice and helpful, shops selling normal travel stuff as expected. Only issue I have is, that food and drinks and other amenities on the train is so damn expensive. This was my first time on a train, a little sticker shocked. We bought lunch for four people, just sandwiches, sodas and chips. Nothing fancy but almost $50.00, that's on every train though. So come prepared, depending on how long your trip is. You can cut down the price, by bringing your own food and drinks. Expect delays, safety comes first when riding on trains.
Debra Anderson
I LUV union Station they treat me like Royalty
Leah Anderson
I liked it lots of seating a Starbucks, Mcdonald's,Dunkin Donuts.Clean bathroom s.Helpfull Amtrak Workers to help you locate your train, taxis outside brought me to La Quinta hotel! Had a nice visit and stay! Thank you Chicago,Amtrak and La Quinta and local Taxis.
Sreenivas Pondicherry
Beautiful building and nice waiting rooms including the Legacy Club. Always bustling with regular commuters and tourists. Easy ticketing, baggage areas easy to get to. Convenience store for little things you forgot to pack. Fast food and healthy foods upstairs. Rental cars one block.
VJ Saez
Clean, helpful staff and most of all the place is safe!
JJ And
It's amazing. Perfect to wait and take some pictures or just eat something if ure hungry.
Steve Mastny
As a place on needs to pass through to take various types of public transit, Union Station really does pretty well. The grand gallery is an impressively cavernous and beautiful it it's own way space, and the various food and drink amenities throughout the station can come in quite handy when looking for a quick bite or beer. Not really a destination in and of itself, but quite nice for what it is.
C Fair
Your experience will probably vary depending on time of day and and your schedule. I used to run to do the Milwaukee-Chicago commute on the Hiawatha, which is a mess, with daily commuters crammed into same waiting area with passengers waiting for next train to Minnesota and beyond. AMTRAK tries different methods to alleviate the squeeze, but nothing short of dedicated lanes/space will do much. Great Hall restoration is beautiful and nice to see the space getting better use with AMTRAK ticketing moved there. Addition of a nice full service restaurant in this space would round out the food options. Bear in mind, this is a transit hub for daily commuters on multiple METRA lines, as well as a major AMTRAK hub and services long distance bus lines too. A little more signage of bigger Union Station Maps would help. Having missed a train & hung around waiting for next one with time to relax and be sociable it's really nice to see regulars interact with the people who staff the food court, etc. AMTRAK website and other processes are not intuitive. No reason to take that out on employees who I've found to be helpful and pleasant. You get what you give. It only takes a few more moments to be polite to people. This is an urban hub in the heart of Chicago.

Union Station itself is a wonderful place a little busy but kept clean. Being from out of town we were directed I'm where to go each and every time we asked with the correct information. The only downfall is that the car rental places are very rude inconsiderate and unprofessional. They jacked the rate up just because of their location they claimed not to have cars available the force you into more expensive ones I would recommend setting up your car rental ahead of time outside of that it's a great place
Robin Heil
The platforms are underground and not well ventilated. I walk through thick, visible smog to the station, where even inside people are exposed to high levels of pollution. This is a well documented issue.
The architecture is pretty nice, and I like the fact that there are a great many trains running out of here.
Will F (Will)
I have only ever ridden a train into the station once. Needless to say after seeing it in multiple movies and hearing about it from Friends it was still a spectacular experience. I love the busyness of it and made me feel like I was really throwing myself into urban life. I did have the pleasure of volunteering for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's event called World of Chocolate, and for two years it was in Union station's grand hall it was an amazing event and the decor was beautiful and it was crazy to see how transformed the place was from an architectural landmark and movie site to a beautiful holiday Hall. Unfortunately due to Renovations world of chocolate has had to be moved to other venues but I only hope that one day it gets to go back to the Grand Hall at Union Station.
William Wright
The Station main hall is beautiful. The food court is still a bit sparse since the pandemic, but that's okay Lou Mitchell's is 1/2 block away.
Tyler A. Lehrer
Lovely space. I am absolutely delighted with Amtrack's service and operations. And to arrive after a long trip in this gorgeous building? It's a great look, Chicago! The signage system could be refreshed. IE it wasn't at all obvious where to get the non-Greyhound CoachUSA/VanGalder busses.
Phillip VandenBerg
The ridership is coming back. Some people have no self respect or respect for others. (refuse to wear mask).
Most comply, but it is frustrating.
Restaurants are returning. Some will not reopen.
Kyle McCoy
The building is beautiful and spacious. There are plenty of places to visit while waiting for your train. The trains are all very clean, and the conductors are patient and professional.
Linda Jordan
I so enjoy my time on the train. But today I experienced the Legacy Club. It was so inviting. Because l had 6 hour lay over & it worked out very well for me. The staff in that area were what I expect, the best customer service. To me AMTRAK throughout is the best.
Linda Johansen
Gorgeous building ornate lighting and ceilings and nice upstairs and downstairs lounges to have a snack and a beverage before departing. All but one of my five experiences have been outstanding in staff friendliness and helpfulness. One experience was offensive enough that I would have written a very poor review of the employee if a comment card had been available. Everyone can have a bad day, but when you are EMPLOYED to explain where to leave luggage and where to go to lounge you are in the service industry and you should like people or at least be civil. I was embarrassed to call Chicago my "hometown" when I heard his tone and derisiveness toward me and the next few customers. The others were tourists and it was an embarrassing last thought to carry away about a great city.
Sean “Irish” Kersey
Coming through as the stay at home orders were begining to ease across the country, I assumed it would be a bit overcrowded, a bit overworked and maybe a bit paniky in the station at least. And while it was apparent that there were make shift policies in place, it was remarkedly well handled and went smoothly. My hats off to all the employees who put the work in to make it seem so well done.
Chris Johnson
Beautiful old station, but engine exhaust in the platform area is almost unbearable. Not sure who thought idling trains in an enclosed area would be a good idea. They need to develop a better ventilation system to compensate for this.
Maria Yatsko
The porter who checked my ticket before I got on the train was very rude. I am having knee replacement in a few months and I left my suitcase at the door just outside the train. She asked who’s bag it was and I said mine and she said “well go get it”. Another traveler got my bag because she could see I was having difficulty. This is the fourth train I’ve been on this trip and I was never treated like that. As a matter of fact the porters have been extremely considerate and kind.
Amanuel Kibrom
The service at the Chicago Union Station was pretty great. They have a nice ambience and the people are quite courteous. Make sure you go a few minutes in advance in order to get good spots on the train.Service on the Amtrak is slow but you can't really complain for the price!
Donald Barringer
I took the elevator that was outside on Canal street to the concourse. It was amazing. Less people, street to train. Then I saw this Wonderful clock.
Michael Rosales
If you’re doing a long distance move and have only boxes without electronics - Amtrak is the way to go. It was about $350 to ship 500 lbs of unbreakable items. The staff was friendly and helpful. Amtrak shipping was open every day when I went but - of course - always call to check.
Good luck to all moving
John Hewel
I enjoy visiting Chicago Union Station when I am traveling across the country via Amtrak. The station is clean and well maintained. Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounge is a fantastic place for sleeping and business class passengers to get away from the noise and congestion of the main waiting area. My only real complaint is that the station lacks sufficient signage and it is difficult to find your way around if you are not familiar with the station.
Mardel. K. Salotto
I have always had a love for Chicago. Union Station has been clean every time I pass through. The staff throughout are very helpful & kind.
T K
Spacious train station with a delicious food court to catch a bite on the move.
Agney
Huge place with thousands of travelers everyday. Happy to assist staff, locker availability, equipped with Amtrak Police. Food court is good enough. Meanwhile, the con is that you'll find a few beggars inside the building. Stay vigilant!
Kelsey Waugh
For the most part, I find Union Station to be easy to navigate and get around. However, sometimes the gates are just too crowded. They should consider adding more seating if possible. I usually end up waiting in the Great Hall which isn't awful but seems way out of the way.
Ericlp Pink
Staff where very rude. Train was late and that was out of the control of staff however when passengers would inquire about the train not being called to board staff got rude and told people stop lining up. Then after the train was scheduled to have already left they made an announcement that the train is late but don't go anywhere.
Odessa McElhiney
Union is nice and they're doing a lot of renovations too. Lots of really good food and beautiful great hall. I live in Chicago and have no car so when I go to see friends or family I take the train and I actually do it quite often. I've only ever had one bad experience at Union and it was more because they were sending me, my grandma with 2 new hips and my 94 yr old aunt with a walker in circles bc they didn't know where my grandma was supposed to wait for her bus for some reason. If I could rate Amtrak itself though I'd give it fairly low rating even though I love the train. Almost every single time I go anywhere there's a delay. The furthest I ever travel is 2.5 hours back to see family and I've had trains delayed by more than 4 hours. There's seriously been very few times where my train was on time or even close. I know it's not the conductors fault or anything like that, it's just an extremely annoying thing to experience always. So, just saying, expect delays and don't make plans for the time you're supposed to get to where you're going bc you probably will not be there by then.
Aaron Kaat
They are doing what they can to improve Union Station. The stairs in the great room are getting re-done, Amtrak added a bunch of amenities, and it's getting better. But it's too bad that they don't do more for the platforms. The leaking water is reduced, but still present.
Seth Lindsey
Didn't spend a whole lot of time in here, basically exiting and boarding the train. The building is certainly awesome in its details and history. The gift shop isn't really anything worth stopping by, so if you need something for someone, make sure to grab it elsewhere.
Jeff Gates
Great for people watching. The food court has many choices that are reasonably priced.
Oliver Peckham
Chicago's Union Station is... mostly fine. The construction is beautiful in the main building, and it's relatively convenient to the Loop. That said, the Amtrak section of it is awful, with a claustrophobic feeling and too few seats. Boarding a train here is usually not a great experience.
Ken Levinson
Taking the train downtown to our law office or to court sure beats dealing with traffic! Plenty of spots to grab a drink or quick bite if you are on the run. Given how many thousands of commuters use the station every day, they do a fantastic job.
blackhawk81
Organized and clean. I've only experienced kind staff. I docked one star because I take the train often between school and home and I've experienced pretty frequent delays, not with Amtrak but instead with boarding and leaving the trains... There are usually pretty long lines as a result.
Heather Litz
Nice place to travel to. I wish there were lockers to store your stuff. Instead there is only a bag check. $10 per item and baggage closes at 8:30 pm. Not really convenient. All the restaurants close well before the last train leaves except McDonalds. The last food you want before sitting on a train for 4 hours.
Rachel V
I generally don't take trains from or to Union station but I had to take my cousins from out of town. The architecture is stunning and it sometimes feels like your stepping back in time. Since it's so big, it gets a bit confusing to find the right track, but the staff or even the people who are waiting are extremely helpful.

The staircase in the Great Hall is famous for 'Untouchables' filming! I find this whole space so inspiring! Just think of how many people walked those marble steps -- you can even see the indents from their paths. Same goes with the benches -- think of the conversations they've hosted.
Since this space is always bustling with people, it offers phenomenal people watching!
I am so excited someone invested and will save this architectural wonder in 2018. The Great Hall has so much potential and it's so exciting to be in the hub of transportation; how can one not be excited about being at a major transfer point for national carriers like Amtrak as well as the Metra.
As far as food offerings, not so much. There's a McDonalds that looks like it's straight from the seventies with two registers and massive lines as well as a Jamba Juice. There aren't a lot of shops either and the schedule boards look like they run on DOS.
Since it's historical and hasn't received a lot of funding, it's age is showing, perhaps that's part of the charm until you're walking underground in the un ventilated summer heat or feeling as though you might as well be outside in the frigid winters.
One good thing is once you walk outside, you never have trouble finding a cab or it's just a couple blocks from the CTA Blue line.
TIMOTHY HERNANDEZ
It is very convenient it is clean security walks through the building pretty good I wish that they had a few extra places to choose to eat and know that they're still doing lots of construction on it but it's definitely convenient and it is nice overall

The inside of the train station is great the employees were helpful and since we missed our train because our previous train was late they set us up with meal vouchers, cab vouchers, and a free hotel room. Along with an upgrade to a sleeper cab on the next train and access to a lounge with free snacks and soda. My issue is the homeless and the bums. I couldn't step outside the front of the station without having a sob story thrown at me about how they needed money for a ticket or food. I light a cigarette and here come like 20 more people trying to bum one of those. Inside the food court the same thing happened another sob story wanting money for food. I offer him snacks out my bag that wasn't good enough cause he assumed we were paying for food and wanted money while I was using a meal voucher to get food. If yall could just improve on security and don't let people in who don't have tickets to travel that be great and some outside security around the cabs cause they are bad too I was yelled at by 12 different cab drivers cause I skipped their cab to find a specific cab to take the voucher cause they are the only ones who accept those. I shouldn't have to deal with that being yelled at by cab drivers is ridiculous.
Cindy Baxter
Amtrak staff made the best possible arrangements for me after a long and stressful day due to delayed trains and missing my connecting train. I was going to be stranded for almost 24 hours in Chicago. They gave me vouchers for a cab to the Hyatt Regency McCormick, hotel voucher, cab voucher to return the next day, and a voucher to be used in the food court at the station. Amtrak did the best they could possibly due for me under the circumstances. (This took place on June 14, 2018.)
Jonathan Brier (wolfgang8741)
The Amtrak waiting area gets crowded when a train is preparing to board and really could use expansion and better organization for the queue, but people seem to manage. I wish they had healthier food options available for those waiting to travel and change the doors to the outside from the offset hinge to something easier to use with luggage.
Michelle Jacobson
I stayed in the Legacy Room. Really nice place. It had WiFi, TV, magazines, comfortable couches, a happy hour, and free snacks. The bathroom has free toilteries too. Colleen was great in helping me move my luggage out to the street.
She REALLY made the experience.
Kia Kilpatrick
I loved the atmosphere. It would've been nice to realize there was a food court earlier, but atill it was lovely. The employees were nice and the lounge area was fantastic!
Bill Crowder
Use the train to go to Rochester, NY and back to Chicago often. Other then the bathrooms getting dirty quickly due to the number of passengers I've found the ride comfortable. I sure can't drive there for what I pay. The food is decent; the people I meet are always interesting. Looking to make more trips on Amtrak this year.
sydney j
Love the metra and amtrak. Occasionally navigating through the building can be confusing if you don't know that the even and odd tracks are on opposite sides of the building. Clean, gorgeous, comfortable experience. Only feedback- more benches for the waiting area
Laura Torres
Beautiful station, great organization and such a gorgeous Christmas decor.
Tonia Hall
The station is nice (even though there are no maps, even on the walls??), but the food court had some hit or miss food - do NOT eat at Robinson's. It made me violently ill on the last time I traveled by train, NOT fun!! I couldn't remember the name of the place but saw it today. The "Cajun" grill owner was funny but the food was pretty bland and what they served me didn't taste like the sample! The Nuts on Clark popcorn is AMAZING, though! Definitely try that one.
Vineet Singh
An awesome piece of architecture and the center of only intercity rail terminal in Chicago. It serves as the city's primary terminal for commuter trains. The station stands on the west side of the Chicago.
Apart from the Metra trains to suburbs this is also the stop for Amtrak trains. The station has properly displayed direction signs which help the commuters a lot. There is ample space to sit when one is waiting for the train. There are occasional trade fairs in the hall which one can attend. There are not many options when it comes to food. There is a sports bar and mac Donald inside.
The staff behind the ticket counters and on the floor is always very friendly and attentive.
James D'Angelo
Beautiful old train station in downtown Chicago. It's adequately functional for Metra and Amtrak trains today, though it is generally overwhelmed during rush hour or if anything goes slightly wrong. Food options are OK, though not great. Great room is very neat.
Christine Alagna
Great way to travel to Chicago from suburbs.
Joe Piehl
Union Station is okay for American train stations but it doesn't compare to anything in Europe. The facilities are a little old and the layout is fair from optimal, but it works as a starting or ending point for an Amtrak journey.
One of the most used elements of the station is Great Hall. Frequently used for charity events, formal galas and random beer festivals, this massive room is worth a visit. It's appeared in multiple movies and the turn of the century architecture is really great.
Just off from the Great Hall is the Union Station bar. The prices are better than an airport, but anyone over 21-years-old can drink on the Amtrak or Metra lines, so you're better off picking up a few beers from Walgreens a block or so north of the station.
Daniel
Amtrak owns this heap, and it's been in permanent maintenance mode (recessed tiles popped off, leaky ceilings) for the past decade. For the past two years, it's been a real problem, with it showing up on "top 10 public projects in need of most repair" lists on national news and the Chicago Tribune. Despite this, graffiti and social decay is scarce and the station is overall safe day or night. There are a variety of shops and transit covers both local and national passenger rail.
William Theisen
The original main hall is about the only great thing about the station. The rest is cramped and not very user friendly. Sucks if your from out of town. The location is perfect for downtown to catch Metra or Amtrak, but boy does it need an update.
Jose Barajas
Nice train ride but the station gets packed quick
Amber P
Passed through 2 years ago, was very nice. Decent amount of foods vendors and shopping. Could use a few more seats around, had a hard time finding a place to sit. Many good exits up to the streets.
Brenna Gray
It was clean and the signs were easy to follow to where I needed to go. The great hall is also a beautiful piece of architecture so make sure you stop by and enjoy that.

DBD475 ticket # train:303
In addition, the trains should be maintained frequently. I noticed that the restroom on the train had a dirty floor along with toilet paper everywhere. Although the customer service on the train were able to meet satisfactory standards, employees on the train should maintain a clean and healthy environment for passengers in terms of improvement.
R S
Awesome. Every turn has a information desk with an officer to guide you with routes and boarding.
andrewjjeep
Be sure to double check what platform your train is on!
Nathan Holth
The breathtaking, beautiful, historic part of this station is only used for special events and for unexpected and irritating situations where Amtrak staff will herd people waiting to board from the dark underground dungeon/waiting area by the trains way over to the great hall for reasons unknown. The redo of this station should return to it's roots and simply make the great hall the primary waiting and boarding area and get rid of the dungeon boarding area.
Vincent Lee
Busy place but gets you to the heart of Chicago if you wanted to explore the area on foot. Some might get confused with where the Amtrak and Metra tracks are but friendly staff are on site to help. Food court with a good selection is near if you needed a quick bite.
Stephanie H (Stephsat)
When we arrived it was tough did not know which door which exit to take just wanted out noticed when we came out a canal Street there was also a Union station across the street. You arrive in one and you leave from another.. need help ask for a red cap!
Philip Vecchio
Overall a very positive experience.
One thing I didn't expect was that the Film "The Untouchables" was in part filmed here. I recognized the Stairway from the Iconic scene.
It was a beautiful Train Station that gives a sense of the Glory Days of Train Travel. Right in Downtown Chicago, It's a short walk to the Loop.
The Platform was crumbling. I hope that during their renovations they improve the Platform. Keep some of the old details, but the Chipped Concrete and the Messy Garage look doesn't live up to the grandeur of the rest of the Station.
Staff was very helpful and accommodating.
Roy
Having taken both Metra and Amtrak from here often, both are rarely late, rather prudent on arriving and leaving on time. Good selection on food and drinks as well as a shop for any chargers or extra items needed.
Sandra Adcock
Here I had some great service and the worst_ absolute - of my first experience with using train transpotation as an alternate to flying or driving my own car. If I had to rate my overall trip it would be a 5!
Yet, three people here in Chicago just seemed to be tired and burned out by their job. Two of these people made Me feel racism was part of how they felt toward me. This is just my opinion. Yet, a person should never get this feeling, whatever color you are! At least this is how I feel!
Let me state - the rest of the time- I felt that all employees of all races treated me-or made me feel- as if I here a Queen of something.
Due to a wreck in 2008, I became classified and retired in the United States early due to Disability of multiple causes. I will start on the drug Humira this week.
Yet, I try to do as much as I can knowing this will keep me active longer. I slept on the top bunkbed and I was hurting very badly, I asked two people for help and how long it might be to get like the kind of help one gets with baggage and a ride. the first person said it would be a long time if I got help at all.
The next person said basically the same thing and when I got up to come and ask a question he yelled @ me to go sit down like I was a child or a dog.
I called the1-800# and got my status changed.
Funny, I was not demanding that I be helped right now or any such thing. matter fact- after I was treated shabby, I said, I did not demand to be waited on right now. I stated my next train was not for 4 hours so I had time to wait.
Our tickets included bedroom and on the way back " bedroomettes," which allowed Us access to the passenger lounge where there is food served and showers. I belive this is a kind of VIP status.
Once my husband obtained help I was fine.
I have learned with my disability that when I feel like I need help- it is best to ask for it. Yes, it is best to as much as you can for yourself-but, also know when to ask for help!
On the way home one person felt the need to give me a lecture on my over weight luggage. I will admit my part here in this, because I am a person that feels you should be honest: my bag most likely was over weight. A lengthy lecture making a passenger feel like a child or animal is not the way to handle this. A simple statement of the policy is all that was needed. Then I would have apologized profusely, explaining I had learned another lesson about trying to be too independent and it is not shameful to be disabled or ash for help. Plus, I would then have proceeded to state that the ride was enough for me and thank her and still given her a good tip. As it was- I stated the was not to touch my bassage in any way and she did. You see I believe in the Golden Rule - regaldless of religion- if you treat people as you want to be treated- all people- then you usually will or should be treated in Kind.
My response was wrong. But, when people are treated as if they are dirt automatic reflexes sometimes kick in. No, it does not make these actions right- and I need to work on them.
I find it Extremely interesting that traveling to and from- basically this means hitting an station Six times and twice the same station is the only time I had a bad experience.
Silvia Ciccociopo
Safe, clean, all the services you can need
Jeremy B
Fantastic Grand Hall, lots of stores to shop at.
Steve Schmidt
Very nice lady Renee helped me get into the sleeper lounge for Amtrak👍She did check I had a rewards account and a Usa Rail pass …
Carlos Butler
Union Station is still pretty gritty. It's dark and dirty. Functional. The trains pretty much run on time. Easy to get in and get out. The restaurants are basic and quick. Location is fantastic.
Nicholas S
I'm new to riding trains, only ridden 2 times so far. Trains were on time, station was clean. Some of the workers were not so helpful, but enjoyed not having to drive the 6 hrs to get to my daughers house. I'll be a repeat rider. Overall I'll give 5 stars.
Jeffrey McErlean
Haven't been there since the big rehab several years ago. Wonderful job preserving the Beaux Arts interior. Food Court has all the right offerings.
Teresa Ray
Of course the building is gorgeous, but not in comparison to the staff. Ruby Sntos in the Metropolitan Lounge treated me as if I were her Mother; helping me find places, telling me when my train was coming and assisting me to the Red Cap. Rick Landeros (my Red Cap) took me to my train then back to an office to change my reservation when I found out I had made my reservation for the wrong day. He and the office lady fixed my ticket and he whisked me back to the train, carried up my luggage and was off like a flash to brighten someone else's life. Being of a certain age I am accustomed to being forgotten but the amtrak staff spoiled me for any other travel method.
Timothy Kim
Out of the 4 Intercity railroad terminals in the Downtown Chicago, this is the station where both Metra and Amtrak terminate (latter being the owner). There is a good selection of food and drinks in the food court. You can wait for your train to arrive by standing at the gate, but in the event of a long wait, there is the great hall. People are informative and helpful here. You can also check the arrival/departure board to see where your train is; sort of like an airport in that sense.
On the downside, the platforms are dangerously narrow, so there is a risk of falling off the platform when it is crowded. Moreover, there should be an overhaul (I heard it will happen a year or two from now) to remodel into a state of the art facility to relieve platform crowding and clean up the air over the tracks, especially on the north concourse. I also hope that the dispatch control system will be remodernized to avoid going down too often.
Richard Halpert
The Station is old and very "quaint." It is roomiy and comfortable. The only problem is that sometimes "non-customers" create a little unease. But there is a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety precinct attached. The station is regularly monitored. A large sign keeps passengers update on any delays.
Brian Evans
Huge train station and bus station; I mean there are pigeons inside the building living there. There cool with it.
Cool building with quality architecture that deserves to be shot in movies.
Isa Aliyu
Well organized and neat.
Even with the covid they able to get it together.
Good job and kudos to the management and city of Chicago together we fight the Virus out our cities.
Shashwat P. Baxi
The weather can really screw up your plans here. The place is enormous and it's sometimes hard to navigate all of the different parts. I've had the METRA train close in my face a couple times and I could not have been more annoyed. The place is nice and they have various restaurants and stores, but it's possibly too much stuff going on at once!
Aisha Jackson
I was very confused and angry when I was trying to locate my train. The employees wasn't helpful at all and almost missed my train. Other than that the train was comfortable and the food is good. Boarding the passengers to their right train needs improvement.
Sarah Ranahan
Left from Union Station to go cross country to Newark/NYC in late 2018. Staff was beyond helpful when I expressed I needed help with baggage due to medical reasons. They were also helpful with explaining how the different legs of the trip would be. Although being on train for almost 21 hours was killing me. Perhaps would've been better if I got to see the land during the day!
Deb Schultz
Took my handicapped grandkids on a train trip to Chicago this summer we were very impressed with the care and service we received. Felt very comfortable on the train and at the stations. People working were polite and helpful. Very nice trip on the train.
Kim P
Rude here ask a lady where too go she point too where couldnt find it i ask her agian she show me.. Customer being rude putting his stuff by the outlet i ask him too move it he did lady ask him the same she use it he said i been here long enough no i havent... The employees talking loud. Not normal voice... They said i couldnt bring my bag upstairs no room they had room no one can find theres the employee said we need too look for ours was from toledo ohio to Chicago
Edit...
Come too found out they didn't give me my roomette I paid for ask a employee he said I didn't email Amtrak they refused too refund me smh
Never going through Amtrak
With all the smoking and weed smoking people smelt on the train
Matt Flower
Clean facilities. Helpful people. Decorated for the holiday, thought they did a nice job. Good court was fast and convenient, thought the prices were reasonable for the Chicago area.
Amanda Bittorf
If you've never been its a wonderful piece of Chicago history. If you're going to catch a train definitely be on time, but also take a moment to explore and check out all the wonderful detail, especially on the arched ceilings. Events are Gorgeous in the GREAT HALL.
David A
so you came downtown on a Metra train? good, i just wish that the public transportation here rivaled something in the EU. The trains run almost on time on the weekends. If you can hold an event here, the great hall is the best. always replicated, never the same.
Bill Mehilos
"It's okay" is probably the most apt description of Metra's service. The trains aren't terrible, but they aren't great. Seat cushions have been completely destroyed by some commuters fat bottom so many times over the years sometimes it feels like you're sitting on bare metal. Train cars them selves are loud, rattly, squeaky affairs, tinged green by the daft polarized windows that make everything look sickly.
Trains are mostly "on time" if you consider +/- 6 minutes on time. And I do mean the minus, I've watched too many trains pull away from the station 4 minutes before they were supposed to. Stops are placed far to close together for the polluting lumberbuses they use for locomotives.
That leads me to the next bit. Scheduling. The timetables are great if you're a freak who is up and ready to face the day at 5 AM, wants to get to work by 730, and leave at 3:30. Around those times, there are trains every 15 minutes. It's awesome, if you're a freak.
I'm not a freak. I wake up around the same time the freaks sit down at their desk. I start work at 9:00AM, like most people. I like to get to my desk 15 minutes early to grind coffee beans and wallow in self-pity before I start my day. Metra will not allow me to do that. The genius of it, scheduling a commuter train to pull into the city AT 9 AM. Super good if you work at Union Station, terrible if you work anywhere else.
There's also the undeniable fact that regardless of the time of day, driving is quicker, door-to-door. Way quicker. I've left work from the West Loop at 445PM, Ike and Kennedy backed up to Hell, and made it home quicker than taking Metra.
I realize that Metra is broke. No one in Springfield, Washington, or in City Hall want to do anything to get Metra a bit more money to update their 50-year old train cars and nasty diesel locomotives which fill Union Station with toxic smog every day (but no smoking, lol). Metra, all thing's considered, is doing a DAMN FINE job with the budget and equipment they have. I'm glad for the fare hike. You all need the money, ask for it. And in the end I still like taking the train, if I'm not in a hurry. I wish the trains ran on a more sane and regular basis. I wish they weren't all so old, and were a bit faster and eco-friendly. But in the end, its still better than driving. Driving requires just enough of your attention that you can't do anything else, and too little to make it anything but boring. I'd rather get lost in a good book for 1.5 hours one-way than have to listen to the prattle on the radio for 45 minutes.
But it's just okay.
Karissa Beach
Courteous red cap service makes the difference!
Josh George
I believe the security guard's last name was Kitzak. He was the most profession, most caring, more wonderful security I've ever experienced. I've worked in the bar industry for a long time and have seen wonderful employees, but Kitzak went above and beyond his responsibilities. My fiance lost her phone and he we and found us a half an hour later and returned it. He could have just ignored it, or just thrown it in lost and found, but he cared enough to find us. We tried giving him money to compensate him and he wouldn't take it because he truly cares about the rules and regulations set before him. He was a wonderful employee and god forbid he gets lets go. He deserves a promotion. He deserves a guaranteed job. Don't lose someone like this. He will consistently be a guiding light for all new employees.
Jason Cadell
If you're travelling from near and far on Amtrak you'll end up at Union Station, Union Station, 225 S Canal St, Chicago, IL 60606. The Grand Hall has filmed a famous movie "The Untouchables" and more recently the band Maroon Five held a concert there as well. It's a piece of railroad history for sure so take time to walk all the way around the station if you're there for a decent stop over.
pete herold
Nice station but not the friendliest people that work here.
Know where you need to go because asking a question may get you an interesting response!
Found one lady in a store in the station and she was very friendly and helpful 🙂
Scott A Lagger
This is my favorite train station. The Great Hall is a must see for every Chicagoan or otherwise. The food options are very good. Connections to the rest of the city are plentiful.
Sherry LBJ
I love "coming home" to this well aged station I've visited many times in the last 15 years. The great hall - so grand and peaceful. The fountain by the Amtrack ticket counter - cheerfully bubbling and covering the bustle noise. I try not to miss the Cinabon here, they always seem to thei time to treat their customers as people.
sandi hendrix
I've been riding the train 20 years ,use to love coming to Chicago until this year, if you have carry on luggage don't look for lockers they got rid of them now each piece is 10 dollars to have them hold ,so my pillow ,backpack n small cooler 30 bucks ,so much for taking in the sights ,
Debra Daun
I have been here many times. It's full of history, and a great place for people watching. The best thing I found was the ability to send large packages relatively inexpensively via LTL (Less Than Load) freight. I sent over 100 pounds of packages to from Chicago to Colorado for $50. You just bring it to the freight dock under Union Station.
Fenna Semken
Typically this is a great place to go. I go to school here in Chicago and go home from time to time. When the train is on time everything is fine but recently the trains have been delayed 5-6 hours and the staff never is able to tell you any information.
George DeVore
The staff were helpful. The restrooms could use an update there are no family restrooms
Sergio Perelli
If you are in the area, the great hall is worth poking your head into. I've taken the Wolverine Amtrak train to and from Michigan without any problems many times. There are plenty of food options as well.
Randall Davis
Amtrak staff are very helpful. System is not very intuitive. You will likely wait in great hall until you are walked to your train to board as a group.
Cai Fasse
Station itself has a lot of food options including: McDonald's, pret a manger, Jamba juice, etc. Waiting and sitting areas are clean and there are several entrances going to different boarding areas.
Departure boards are generally reliable and up to date. When there are massive delays, metra has no idea how to mitigate issues and nobody knows what trains are on what tracks.
Actual platforms are terrible. During rush hour there is almost no ventilation and with all the engines around it's difficult to breathe. Water leaks from the ceiling when it's raining.
Usagi Tsukino
Efficient boarding system and very fast food court
Yvette “Sunshine” Martin
Nice and clean. People aren't as helpful as New Yorkers in my opinion but lovely architecture in the station. Getting a cab is easy and with more time I could like it more!
Oddzilla James
Hi Travelers....welcome to Union Station in Chicago....older building but well lit and highly maintained.....Clean an secure. Many check points with uniformed personel and first responders at strategic locations. Security is everywhere to ensure the safe passage of travellers. All travelers are eyeballed closley but I didn't feel offended or put out. It made me feel safe. Police dogs sniffing luggage and one unattended bag I saw. Keeping everyone safe. No derilic or panhandlers to be found. Travelling as it should be. God Bless you AND America.
Ashling Ivers
Enjoy going through this station. Always clean and has many different restaurant options when you're waiting. Clean and well staffed. Staff doesn't always look happy to be there but are efficient.
Anika Isom
The waiting area for Amtrak could use some updating. Very old chairs and dingy surroundings.
Manuel Colón
Even if you had no reason to commute here, I think it's a worthwhile place to check out simply because of how beautiful the Great Hall is. However, if you are traveling here out of need, definitely arrive early because of the hectic traffic around the station and the confusing nature of the underground tracks/terminals.
Hayden McDuffee
It is a bustling place full of interesting people going interesting places (or boring people going boring places.) It does what it is supposed to and serves it's purpose as travel hub pretty well. The Great Room is pretty cool as well. Nothing fancy; just a train station.
Josh NMatt
A classic. The website should be helpful to those that aren't that familiar with the Chicago transit system, including trains and buses, where you should find all the necessary fare and schedule info. Let's help keep it preserved for many, many yeara to come, it's such a part of the city's amazing history!
Prudence Hoffman
Beautiful and clean. First class lounge has big TVs, ATM, free snacks and sodas. CLEAN bathrooms and knowledgeable staff.
Jewels Martinez
Nice clean and there is no homeless people begging for money here . Well I travel 5 times and is always clean and decent people around. The first time I got lost and they help me right away I love this place.
A Cow
Great place to people watch and to kill some time. Amtrak and Metra have terminals here. Amtrak for travelers and then Metra for suburban commuters. Make sure you get out of their way during rush hour. Parts of my best friends wedding was filmed at the benches at union station
Jeff
A great place to explore and hang out between trains. Check out The Junction sports bar/pub. Laura is bartender extraordinaire, and will make you feel welcome and at home amongst the many Chicago locals who frequent the place.
Remy Fenster
A little confusing and not clear instructions but overall a clean station. Surprisingly the food court had plenty of options at reasonable prices. Places seemed to be closing up around 8pm.
Darren Kirby
Chicago Union Station gives access to a lot of Metra and Amtrak trains just west of the river and West of The Loop. Don't miss the steps that lead into the great hall, and think back to the scene from the movie The Untouchables when Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia apprehend the bookkeeper.
Alex Misakian
Great train station that can get you all over the state and country. The Great Hall is beautiful. Redoing the food courts now so should have more food options soon.
Eric Kreider
Clean with efficient personnel. Iconic older station in the heart of Chicago.
John Partridge
We came in late but left exactly on time. I wish we hadn't been so late because there's lots of awesome food choices in the food court.
Timothy Lamke
First time departing from Union Station. VERY confusing. Not enough signage to know where I was supposed to be. Barely made it to boarding on time even though I was an hour early. I recommend finding an employee ASAP when arriving and hope they point you in the right direction, if you're a new traveler.
michael rosas
It's a train station... and if that were all then this review would be over. This is a beautiful trainstation therefore this review continues. As far as location you really couldn't ask for more for Amtrack service or the Metra, but if someone is picking you up from the station by car then be warned of the tremendous traffic that is present on all the adjacent streets. Try to attend a charity ball or on of the other upscale events that are frequently held here, you'll feel like your on the set of a movie (without the fourth wall of course).
dean aronson
They have torn down the long term parking structure across the street from the station so parking was as total disaster. Sure hope they are rebuilding a new parking ramp. Walking 3 to 4 blocks with luggage is a major pain in the derriere!!! And I sure wish there was a connector on the empire builder to continue to Michigan in the afternoon!! Coming from Minneapolis to port Huron is not possible!!!
Yolande Anjargholi
easy to navigate. For a first time rider, don't feel intimidated. Just go there, and the train schedule is really easy to use to find your way around. It is also a great walk to get there. right on the river. If you see the FFC gym, you are there. Have fun on the train.
Manda B
The Amtrak staff was very helpful and informative
Grant Haynes
Really cool building, they're finally putting some money into it and fixing a number of things including the skylight. Amtrak and Metra operate out of this station, their staff can be hit or miss in their helpfulness.
Shell Burke
Granted yes, this is a train station, but the conductors will take a good joke and the evening yard master is a super friendly guy. There's also plenty of ways to kill time if you have to wait a bit for your metra train. You can charge your phone by the ticket agent in the north side, grab a bite to eat anywhere upstairs... Also easy walk to a CTA shelter grab a bus to downtown and the north side. You also have the eL just over the river and the river taxi when the weather is nicer.
Vasil Svolopoulos
A fantastic and iconic train station from the movies. They always kept it clean and safe during my travels from this station. Trains always left (begrudgingly) on time.

Beautiful great room in the old train station. The station tends to be overcrowded and is often difficult to navigate but has been rapidly improving over the past few years.

Very nice inside and lots of food nearby on the outside

The station is well kept and there is food and drinks available. Good taxi service ( on Canal St. ) and its close to the Sears Tower if you have time!
