Reviews of Anchorage Depot

One of the most peaceful and picturesque train rides that I’ve ever taken. Trains were clean and people from all over we’re on the same mission to see the glaciers. The conductors were cordial and the staff were amazing… very helpful. Food was great and bathrooms were clean. I rode from anchorage into Whittier and it was an absolute stunning ride
Alex Palmer
Really nice people working here, and everything is very organized. Cute little gift shop inside with a nice selection. A coffee cart also offering pastries, assorted bottled beverages and a small selection of fruit is available inside while waiting for your train.
John Blackburn
This was amazing! Hands down the best thing we did in Anchorage. Took the train from Anchorage to Seward and back in one day. Even though it was rainy it was still an amazingly beautiful ride. The staff on board, especially our conductor Warren, were fantastic and made the trip memorable and one of the best things we’ve done in Alaska!
Schedule the whole day to go to Seward and back as it takes 4 hours each way and it is expensive (even for the adventure class) - but worth the time and money we spent in my opinion. Highly recommended!

We took the our family on the train to Whittier and it was amazing. Everyone was friendly and the kids had a great time. We would love to have more time to take other trains to different locations.
Thanks for a great family trip!!

Alaskan Railroad was the best adventure we've had ... Booked the Goldstar tickets well worth it ... Breakfast or Dinner available with ticket ... Having the glass top seats truly was exceptional and gave unobstructed views.

My family of 4 took the train from Anchorage to Seward and enjoyed the sights of the glaciers and the beautiful terrain. It was a HUGE time commitment (about 5:45 am until 11 pm).
The drive from Anchorage to Seward is about 2 1/2 hours, but the train is a 4.5 hour trip. You do get to see some different sights that you can't see from the car and a fantastic high school student does a great job narrating the trip (including animal sightings), but it was a very long day. We had to arrive at the station by 5:45 am to get our tickets to get on the train. We left the station about 7 am and didn't get into Seward until close to 11:30 am (so be careful what adventure you book in town as most ships leave harbor about that same time for whale watching or glacier viewing).
After a very clear warning about being ON the train and ready to go by 6 pm, my family worked to spend over 6 hours in Seward. Some options are the aquarium (about a mile and a half walk from the train station or you can take the free shuttle) or a glacier/whale watching tour. There are some good shops and some restaurants available as well as sightseeing from the harbor.
If you don't pay the mega bucks for the fancy train cars, you often got to see the wild life from the back end (if at all). Also, the only way to see the scenery without a window view, you need to pay for the more expensive seats since that train car is the only one with outdoor access.
The train left Seward about 6 pm, but didn't get back into Anchorage until 10:45 pm. It was a very long day and wasn't as necessary if you made the car drive to Seward. Pretty, but not worth the time in my opinion...

Rode from Anchorage to Seward and it was a great decision compared to renting a car. Hassle free sightseeing with terrific views from upper deck. Staff are very friendly and point out anything to see and take pictures of. Smooth ride with luggage storage. Highly recommend, especially to support their independently owned railroad system!

As strange as it sounds, i’ve never ridden a train before so this experience of the Alaska Railroad was a treat! This was a trip from Anchorage to Seward. I've driven to Seward before but the train ride there allows you to see scenery you aren't able to view from the car! The staff was extremely friendly and the process of boarding was very smooth. It was nice that we had the flexibility to walk around after the train started moving, we were able to explore the train! I didn’t realize that was possible. I was surprised when the staff came and gave us tips for viewing scenery and wildlife, some facts of what we were seeing and offered to book tables for us in the dining cart. That was a level of service I wasn’t expecting. In regards to the food and wait staff on the dining cart, the food was really tasty and the service was quick! It was nice to be able to enjoy scenery while eating and I didn’t feel rushed out after we eat, we were able to leave at our own leisure. The back of the train had a unique and awesome view, we were able to walk from the front all the way to the back and take some photos. The glass dome car was also really fun to sit in and see an unobstructed 360 view of nature. The views around us were astounding! I can’t believe I was able to see all these beautiful new sights on the way to Seward I wouldn’t see by road and that was amazing. We even saw a Moose and her baby calf, and a bear! I was able to get some excellent photos! I’ll definitely be recommending the Alaska Railroad to friends, and I’d definitely ride it again! Thanks for that amazing trip!

The Anchorage Depot has a classic appearance that transports you back into the past. When there are events here (model trains) this space is very small, otherwise there are plenty of seats to wait for your train. There are restrooms, but there may not be food available. Parking is available across the street, but make sure you pay!

This was so fun! My son absolutely enjoyed the thrill of the train ride and my husband and I enjoyed being able to enjoy the views without having to drive. The food and drink in goldstar was an excellent bonus and well worth it to us. Thank you for an awesome experience!
Victoria Chase
Worth it for the scenery. But restrooms are nasty. Food served cold to lukewarm. Also subjected to obscene language by the friends of the bartender Labor Day on the way into Anchorage from Seaward.
Kay Jay
Ride is great but for the price you pay but the price you pay does not even have snacks or drinks.
Maggie Madden
I took the train from Anchorage to Seward. I purchased a Goldstar Service ticket. It was worth every penny. It was an absolutely beautiful train ride. Definitely recommend!
Alex Chirayath
Great station. Boarded this train to go towards Spencer Glacier. The staff was punctual and very helpful. You have a small store for snacks at the station. Overall, a great experience!
Megan Gale
An absolute must do either direction! The 12 hours to Fairbanks was the most beautiful train ride I've ever been on...it even rivals Switzerland! Well... that was until I took the train to Seward. Hands down, the absolute most gorgeous.
The trains are clean, the staff is friendly. There is a ton of leg room, and relaxing while nature- floura and fauna- passes by.... nothing like this train in the world. Even in Adventure Class! I'll do gold star next time. Just for the windowless viewing cars and Cafe, if nothing else. But Adventure Class was worth it!
10/10 will do again.

A bit of a slow process so heed the 1 hour prior to departure suggestion. There is a coffee bar inside. Bring an umbrella if it's raining as the line does go outside.
Tomas Votava
Luxury and very comfortable railcars and it says 2m high person.
Gene Wilson
Looks so fun. I just went there to ride the train and go to the cruise ship terminal but they were sold out. I was so disappointed
Daryl Mosser
Very nice. Clean. Well staffed by knowledgeable people. Little coffee and sweets stand made a great cappuccino. Worth going there just for that. Nice gift shop. Staff handled the boarding crowd with ease.

Great staff! Trains actually slow down for photo opportunities and give a little history/information as you ride through towns. Comfy seating, good variety in dining car and clean bathrooms. Thank you for the great memory!

Awesome trip for my friends from California without me driving a car to Whittier and be on the Glacier Cruise. Opportunity to see views we don’t usually see while driving your own car and was able to hear some history of the 1964 earthquake. I thought those dead trees along the way we usually pass by were just old trees decaying… they were actually due to the 1964 earthquake… and never seen vast flowering waterlilies !!!
Tarik Husseini
Very friendly helpful people working here. Convenient to downtown. Easy to navigate, with workers providing direction. Excellent experience, and awesome train ride to Fairbanks 😊 …
Larry Beeman
Nothing special, drop off bags under tent, then go inside of the building and get your tickets. Not much seating room. Tried to get breakfast sandwich and they didn't have any.
Carolyn Schneller
The train is well taken care of but what left a more lasting impression was the customer service leaders at the ticketing booth! They helped us sort out a booking error (on our part) and still ensured our Alaska plans weren’t derailed (😉🚞)! 5 stars, thank you!! …
Irena Dedovic
This was a highlight of the ultimate Alaskan trip! It is a perfect way to see the beautiful scenery around Alaska and take in the views. Pictures don’t describe Alaska’s beauty. The only downfall is be prepared not to take a round trip fare. Our day trip from Anchorage to Seward was cut in half due to a bridge starting to flood and we had to wait 2 hours for a coach bus to be driven back instead. That was a big disappointment but Mother Nature had other plans. Be prepared for plans to change the weather can be very unpredictable daily even in the Summer.
Jessica Thompson
My husband and I were really looking forward to this part of our trip but we were very disappointed. The train was super slow and it took over twice as long to get where we going. The scenery was nice but the time it wasted for us was time that we could have used driving to where we wanted to go and explore extra things along the way. It wasn’t worth it for us.
Tana Franklin
Very nice and clean. Gift shop even sells stamps for post cards and will mail them for you!! The staff is so nice and upbeat!!
Erica Lynn
Over all train experience was fun. Great for families. We did the glacier discovery ride. Kind of long I would suggest planning an excursion from the train or switching to the motorcoach for return. Definitely BE PREPARED WITH FOOD.
Christopher Wood
The Alaska Railroad was the best part of our trip. We were able to see so much from the train ride that we took down to Seward. The on-board staff were great and very helpful. The food that we ate was also great. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

Had one of the best experience in riding on the train from Anchorage to Whittier. The train ride was smooth and we got some of the best seats in the train on the upper deck of one of the carriages. Our carriage had a pantry and served delicious meals and coffee. The train ride is a must if you have kids under 10 and worth the cost of the tickets. All along the train ride, there was wildlife and history that was constantly being announced. The Anchorage depot location was easy to find with plenty of parking right next to it. Couldnt have asked for a better experience during my Alaska trip.

Super fast baggage unloading, easy to get to and helpful service staff. Alaska Railroad does a great job.

Beautiful architecture in a working train station. The often have displays to view while you're waiting for your train. Also, there's a great Alaska gift shop here with very reasonable prices. There's a helpful and friendly staff behind the windows to help you with your journey..

We made the trip from Anchorage to Seward and back in the summer of 2015. We combined it with a boat trip trough Kenai Fjords NP. It was a very long but beautiful day. On the way from Anchorage to Seward we rode the Gold Star coach, where you sit up high under the glass dome. It really lets you see the countryside and you're able to look over the shrubs and the trees. It's worth the money to at least make part of the trip in Gold Star.
There is not much time to spend in Seward when you combine the train with the boat. But the good thing is that you'll be on the water longer to watch the whales and other sea life. Don't forget to take pills against motion sickness!

I took the Wilderness Express from Anchorage to Talkeetna and Talkeetna to Denali in September 2015. I bought my tickets online and it was a painless experience. You'll get an electronic copy as well as one physically mailed to you, which for some reason I wasn't expecting. The railroad building has a small gift shop and sells coffee.
The Express train is great, as it has a 360 dome and is highly elevated. They don't like you to bring in and eat outside food, but were actually pretty lax about it. The guides were really knowledgeable; I learned a ton on this trip! I do recommend stopping for a night in Talkeetna, it's a small historic district with hospitable people. Touristy, yes, but visiting during shoulder season meant all the shops were 50% off.
The views were incredible, especially passing over Hurricane Gulch. Being mid-September, I got to see brilliant hues of orange and yellow. You'll see some bald eagles' nests, maybe a moose or two.
Another great thing about the Express is that it's at the back of the train. For my first leg, there was just one car, so I got some awesome pictures from the deck looking back onto the railroad. The second day, there were two cars, and being in the first I realized just how much I loved looking back. These dome cars are also cheaper than the official ARR counterparts.

The gold star dome service is worth the extra cost for the views and photo opportunities. Dense brush and trees still obstruct part of the views but not nearly as much as if we'd been on the bottom seating instead of up top. With gold star, lunch was included, but that was a joke. If you aren't part of the first group they select to be seated, chances are they will already be out of many menu items. In a train that was not even half full, we were in seats 9a&9b and by the time we were seated in the dining room, they were already out of 2 of the 5 entrees. Also, the sound system was poor, so you could rarely hear the "tour guides" describing things, and when you could hear them, they were often describing what we "just passed" instead of preparing people for what would be up ahead on the right or left. Much room for improvement from a service standpoint, but a relaxing portion of the trip with nice views. We took the train from Denali to Talkeetna.

Sometimes a little late and lacking seating area while waiting for the trains but the trains themselves were quite nice. Except for the food, that was not worth the price.

This is a great company we had a wonderful time! And the food is great! They have an actual kitchen so it's not like airplane food and the views are incredible!!

We just took the Aurora Winter Train from Anchorage to Fairbanks. As. Newbie, i have some tips and whatnot. First- if you can, avoid the emergency exit seats. They dont all have a good seal so we sat next to a foggy window the entire ride which is a huge bummer. We got fortunate the people in the seats in front of us spent the Entire train ride drinking in the cafe car so we were able to use their window for photos. Bring a little bottle of eyeglass anti-fogger just in case. Second- absolutely dress in layers. They bump the heater on the train to the point where its uncomfortable. we were fine in tshirts in the main cars. Third- there will be opportunities to hop off and take photos for 5-10min, so keep your coats/beanies/gloves etc with you, dont leave it all in your checked baggage. Fourth - theres uber/lyft/and plenty of taxis waiting at the depot in fairbanks when we arrived. No need to plan ahead.
Last- each car has a set of outlets to use, charge your phone, etc. The cafe car has a big free jug of water for refilling water bottles.
Overall the staff were all lovely. Food was good, bathrooms were clean. Alaska is truely a stunning state and this is a great way to sight see. 100% worth every penny and would absolutely do it all again

(Translation) Take the train from fairbanks to Anchorage. The guide on the way has a detailed introduction to the scenery and buildings along the way. But unfortunately, it rained the day before and caused landslides on the way from Denali park to Anchorage, so we were forced to get off at Denali park and take the bus for the rest of the journey. The staff took care of the passengers along the way, but it took more than three hours just to wait for the bus in denali park, which is a fly in the ointment.
