I walked in on a whim one afternoon and asked to get some flash from whoever had time. I ended up with Dre, who was super accommodating and had an awesome, chill vibe. I loved that they were playing jazz music. My ‘on a whim’ tattoo ended up being about three hours worth of sitting and Dre was very communicative about how long it would take and what still needed to be done. I ended up with a beautiful (& big!) tattoo that I adore. Highly recommend this shop!

Blu Gorilla had an amazing friendly atmosphere. We did wait a good bit in the waiting room but it was worth it. There were many books of their art to look at and most of their art is organized on the walk with other exotic items hanging on the wall. My friend got her first tattoo and can’t wait for her next one. I got my third tattoo and by far this was my first place. Our artist was Peter, he stopped a few times just to ask if we were okay. In my opinion that was a great thing for an artist to do. Peter was also good at holding a conversation. We highly recommend him. The whole building was so fun to look at. The bathroom was very clean with gorilla wallpaper and had a disco ball in the shower. We were surprised to hear that the artist fixed the place up, it turned out amazing. I hope this review helps those who want to get their first tattoo or another tattoo in general.

My two friends and I were visiting from out of state last week and decided to schedule a a next day appointment. We were paired with Jimmy not knowing much about the shop or the artists, and we got so lucky!!! He was thorough, kind, hilarious, and took his time with each of us. He was especially patient and understanding with me as it was my first tattoo and I was really nervous. He made my friends and I feel extremely calm, comfortable, and welcome. We are all so happy with his work and love our new tattoos! This was definitely the highlight of our entire trip. Thank you so much Jimmy!!!

Was visiting from out of town with a group of friends. We walked in on a Saturday right when they opened without appointments. My artist brushed against my arm with the gun and left a random line by the tattoo. I noticed it when he finished, I tried to see if it was hair or something but he proceeded to yell at me that I’m touching it with my “dirty hands” and that it was just an eyelash. It’s not an eyelash, thanks for messing up my tattoo. Would only recommend this place for cheap bangers :/

Brad Grimes won Charleston’s best tattooist in 2021, and after my experience I can see why. My appointment was scheduled for a touch up and a rose dagger American traditional on my forearm. From the very beginning of our session, he was incredibly polite and insightful. He gave great input on the coloring of the surrounding leaves and I couldn’t ask for a better final product. Based on the line work and shading alone I can tell he enjoys his work and is a master of his craft. He works quickly but carefully, and knows when to pause to take a break. The overall session took three hours, so we were not able to complete the touch up. But after seeing the end result of the new tattoo, I can not wait for our next session. I am already thinking of the next design if we get to session 3. Overall, if you want a good tattoo and you want it done right; Brad is your guy and Blu Gorilla is the place to go.

I came in to get a memorial tattoo, the staff was extremely helpful in finding the right artist to do the tattoo. It turned out better than I could of thought possible. The shop is very clean and has great vibes, I will recommend blu gorilla to everyone I know visiting the charelston area. I have been tattooed all up and down the east coast and blu gorilla is the nicest shop I have been to.

This was the best experience I have ever had at a tattoo parlor. My three friends and I walked in off a cruise to get matching tattoos. There was a wait, but we walked off the street, so I expected it. They had comfortable seating and gave us water while we waited. Dre was our artist. Both my friends have never had tattoos before and they were very nervous. Dre was comforting and reassured them in a way I thought was above and beyond. (I would have told them to buck up). The whole process was very sterile and the tattoo design that we showed up with turned out amazing! Also, my friend has a latex allergy and she was well taken care of.

This place is okay. They have good artists but their shop is less than desirable as far as looks. I had 2 tattoos done here. The first one was a geometric straight line design and some of the lines were thicker or thinner than others so it looks strange in some spots. Also needs to be refilled in one spot. The second tattoo, I told him I wanted a hyper-realistic octopus on my sternum, sent pictures and everything, and he showed me the most dainty, chandelier-looking tattoo. Not at all what I asked for so we had to redraw for 30 min to finally get a watered down version of what I actually wanted. I just really wanted my tattoo that day so I just went ahead and got it. It's a pretty tattoo, just faaar from what I asked for. Still salty that he just saw me as a female and assumed I wanted a dainty tattoo. Won't be going there again.

For over 10 years, my Best Friends have shared a bond like no other. Planned a trip to Charleston and wanted a tattoo that we all share with our own little twists. We went to Blu Gorilla Tattoo and met an Amazing Artist, Dre! She drew out the design with each one of our twists and they came out perfect. I was helping my friend get a tattoo here. While they were doing it we left and the guy did a really good job and was very fast. But we left and didn't realize how fast it would be. On our way back they kicked her out and wouldn't let her stay in the waiting room despite being a paying customer. You aren't suppose to keep the fresh injury in the sun! And while she waited a old man showed up trying to get her into his car. That could have easily turned into a horrible situation. So good artists but bad customer service.

My artist was named Gabe from NYC. He was awesome and no complaint on him. However, I did not like the shop. The tray he used looked dirty, and his equipment. Won't lie I'm a little nervous about the healing process with this new tattoo... Another artist I see in WA is so clean!!! Absolutely amazing work by Brad. The line work is amazing, the colors are vibrant, and it healed perfectly. It's exactly what I wanted. Great price for an even better tattoo. I'm really glad I went to Brad for my first one. It was a really awesome experience. The wait wasn't too long and he came up with a design in less than a week if I remember correctly. It took about 3 hours to finish the entire thing and it's bigger than my hand. Just awesome all around, I highly recommend this shop. All of the artists are extremely talented.

My wife, her bestie, and myself all decided to get tattoos today. Marley took care of us all and she did phenomenal work, was very friendly and sociable and most importantly professional, even though we could tell she had a stressful workday from the appointments before us! And this was my first female tattoo artist, who did better work and had a more pleasant attitude than most of the male artists I’ve experienced! Good job from her all around!!! As for Blu Gorilla as a business, it checks all the boxes of a good tattoo parlor: being clean, organized, and having good staff. I will say they are on the pricey side, but again you’re paying for the environment AND the quality! And they make sure it’s right to your liking before you leave! This is my wife’s second and my third tattoo here and both times we had a great experience! Although it’s been a few years since we have been here, their staff and workplace values are why we will keep using them!

Brad did my first tattoo, which is a watercolor fox on my back that I love more and more every time I see it. My tat took 3 hours, and I was nervous, but Brad was super nice, and he made me feel comfortable. Brad is so incredibly talented. Both search engines consisted of such positive reviews. When I mentioned the name, one of my friends (who lives there) had also heard of good things through word of mouth. I was curious to check it out the next day! I was immediately captured by Brad's exquisite artistic attention to detail and creativity after looking through his portfolio. Was eager to meet and discuss my vision with him, as well as receive professional input. He was attentive when I was explaining and spent 25 minutes coming up with a sketch to make sure it was exactly what I had envisioned. My first tattoo, so I had no expectation of what to expect. Brad walked me through what he was doing and also kept my mind off the pain with his friendly and entertaining humor. Could not be happier! Definitely recommend Brad and Blu Gorilla for your first or 15th tattoo. And if I decide to get another tattoo later down the road, I'll save it for when I'm back in Charleston!

Just had my first tattoo done by Ashley. Girl did an absolutely ahhhmazing job! My bestie and I got matching tattoos for my 40th bday. I am so in love with my tattoo. The details, the color, the design(dragonfly) is the best work I have ever seen. For it being my first one, I am highly impressed. The shop was clean, sanitized and very organized. I personally watched Ashley completely disinfect every piece of equipment she used and her entire station. Before and after my tattoo. The artists are also certified in first aid. I went to Brad in February for a tricep tattoo. Its a silhouette of a woman & half of her body is made of flowers. It’s all mainly line work and it came out beautiful! I am in LOVE with this tattoo. Someone who is really good at lines can be hard to come by but my friend recommended that I go to Brad at Blu Gorilla and I am beyond happy with the result. It’s so simple and elegant people compliment it all the time. I will be making another appointment very soon!

I have a lot of tattoos- big pieces, 1/2 sleeve, back etc. I have been tattooed by a lot of artists in a lot of different cities.. Brad does great work. His line work is solid. His concept of color is on point. The way he manipulates the skin to give you the best tattoo possible is great. He is a nice guy and easy to talk to. He is fair. I came in for a full day of work and still needed to come back to finish the piece. I was moving to TN in a couple weeks and he came in on a Sunday to squeeze me in and finish it up before I left- definitely a good dude. Good tattoos are never cheap and Brad did an awesome job. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and decided to get meaningful spontaneous couples tattoos. We did a quick google search and were impressed by the awards and history of the shop. We called and asked if they could take two walk ins. Lanore said she can’t guarantee what we wanted to get done in our short window and told us to come in and see what they could do. We booked our lyft and arrived around 12:15, the location seemed a little sketchy, and the outside looks run down. They didn’t have soap in the bathroom just hand sanitizer, which I wasn’t a fan of. There isn’t anywhere to really get food but a rundown butcher next door. We were able to get some soda and chips. We showed Lanore our ideas and said that Brad could squeeze me in at 4 and Pabby took my husband after about 40 min. There was some talk between artists about Pabby also doing my tattoo but after I looked at Brads work I knew he was the artist that was perfect for my ideas. And I’m so glad that I waited through the awkward. Brad finished his last client at 3 but took that hour to recoop and off we went. He took his time, switched out needles as needed to ensure the best design. His work space was clean and organized and he used every sanitary precaution (I’m a nurse and this was paramount for me and I was pleased). He was amiable, could joke around but also be serious, when I asked about design and placement and size he was honest and tells it like it is, (which I was a little nervous with at first but now that it’s done, appreciated.) He even went live on insta which I thought was cool. All in all my tat is killer and meaningful and matches the styles/theme of my other tats. His line work was great. He was also apprenticing an up and coming artist. She seemed to be on the very beginning of her journey. I didn’t mind her there at all and she tried to be helpful in any way she could (getting supplies, cleaning up etc.) Looking back at the experience it was definitely memorable and the right artists were chosen for us both. My husbands tat came out great and my husband loves it. His design was more manly, heavy lines, stone work, etc. Mine was very delicate, detailed line work, bohemian. Brad has a steady hand and is very talented. You can’t go wrong at this place. Each artist is different and unique. As they should be. Just find the right one for you! Our total time waiting was around 5 hours and about 2 of those hours was not being tatted. ****2 YEAR UPDATES **** Ok, so I decided to take the review down to 4 stars. There was the inconvenience of the area (no food close by with long wait times as to be expected with walkins) and the bathroom situation (one bathroom was out of order and the other had no soap) but the ultimate reason was the quality of the work of my husbands tattoo. (Mine still looks amazing after two years and some have even asked if it was done recently though some time has passed. So that says a lot about my artist.) However, my husbands tattoo has faded considerably. There are A LOT of “windows” in his line work now. And the color went from a pretty green to a gross looking yellow. My husband is severely disappointed about how it looks after it healed. (Now just for clarification, I originally wrote this review before both of our tattoos healed.) My husband is now looking for another artist to fix his tattoo. I hate that that is how he feels about it but his feelings are warranted. I still love mine and think that the artist I chose was perfect for me. Hope this review helps!

Great experience! All the artists were really friendly, which made for a comfortable atmosephere. My artist, Tim Dennis, was absolutely wonderful. I was not sure where I wanted the tattoo to go so he put stencils on two different places so I could make sure it was what I really wanted. Most importantly, he spent alot of time on the details that made the tattoo incredible. My sister and I got the same tattoo, and each one took around three hours to complete. While spending that much time in the shop, I got to see the other artists (Chuck, Justin, and Carlos) do a lot of tattoos. All the tattoos that I saw done were great, and everyone seemed very satisfied with their results. If you are looking for a great tattoo, these are the guys to go to!

Went in for my first bigger tattoo on my left hip and Robin Wilcoxson (@realisticbiscuit on Instagram) blew my mind. He's incredibly talented, free-handed the entire piece, and was meticulous with the color and shading. The tattoo's about 10x7 and he sat for 6.5 hours making sure it was as close to perfect as he could get it. Also, he was a total professional, not at all awkward about having to tattoo in a pretty...hard-to-reach place. I went in with an idea, but wanted him to run with it and work his creative magic. The staff is friendly, they work their tails off, and they enjoy what they do. It's worth a trip to the shop if you're in the area and want a tattoo done well. Make an appointment if you're planning on a tattoo over the weekend; they get pretty swamped.

I got four pieces done here a couple weeks ago with j.j. Quick. He did a 3/6/9 set on me in a couples spots around my body. They came out clean and look great. The fourth was a little one on my finger, I was worried since I know those can tend to not want to stick but it turned out great. Didn’t fade or bleed so. even though he said he would be happy to touch it up free of charge if it didn’t stick, I was glad it didn’t come to that because that jawn stung bad as hell. The experience was hilarious in its own right full of funny conversating with jj and some of the other artists. 10/10 I’ll be back

I was in Charleston for my great aunts funeral. I am planning a sleeve of memorials so after the funeral I thought why not just get the tattoo while I'm in aunt Judy's home town? I googled tattoo shops being the googler I am- and called asking for a quote. I asked how much for a 2in x 2in tattoo they said no quotes via phone- understandable. The shop was about 2-3 miles from my hotel so I just started walking and hoped for the best. 30- 45 mins I arrive. I see the sign and approach the door. A gentleman with a beard asks how he can help me. I explain what I want and he introduces me to the man who will be the artist for my tattoo. Sadly- I can't remember his name he has a shaved head, eyeliner, and snakebite piercings. He prints the picture and explains it'll have to be simplified which I expected. He draws it up fast! and leaves just enough detail. I ask him how much and he says 60$!!!! I am wowed he gives such a decent price. I ask how much for a dash of color and some dates added he says no charge- I love this guy lol. So he puts the dates on one way I didn't like it asked him to change it. No problem so nice. Then I ask again for him to change how he wrote the numbers. AGAIN no problem no attitude. Finally I am happy and he begins. He is so precise and fast the tattooing was over in 30 -40 mins. Maybe even less! It was painless (I do have a high pain tolerance though) but it healed so fast and wasn't achey like my other tattoos had been afterwards. He didn't explain aftercare but he didn't need to for I have other tattoos. He cleaned wrapped me up and I was done. Rung me up and I gave him a 20$ tip for being so great. It was not that we had some great discussion or that the tattoo was extravagantly detailed- it was his sense of professionalism and focus that I truly enjoyed. His lines are INCREDIBLE. So neat and the coloring was just right. Thanks guy who did my tattoo!! Even my grandparents couldn't hate on it and they hate tattoos lol.

I love this place. I read some of reviews and didn't understand the gap between the great and not so great. Rather than take the critical comments from anonymous reviewers, I opted to stop in myself. From the get go I was impressed. I went in there with a hebrew tree concept. I asked them who would be the best and they said Tim. He took one look at the concept and was as excited as I was. The man genuinely loves what he does. The prices were amazing! I was expecting to pay a lot more. They charge by the hour. The best part is, his clock stops when the needle stops. So anytime I needed a break, it was off the clock. You don't get much more fair than that. Plus they have military discounts. The place was clean and sanitary. My first sitting was about 5 hours (huge back piece), one of the guys was headed to the store and offered to pick me up something. That was not necessary, but just the way the shop atmosphere is. It's a great place to go if you're looking for amazing work at an awesome price in an easy going environment. A big concern for me was sanitation; this is one place where I didn't have to worry at all. I'll be headed back for two rib pieces. The best advice I can give is to make an informed decision. The best way to do that is to actually stop by and talk to the artists. I went to three shops in the local and dropped 3 deposits for the same concept before deciding on Blu Gorilla. I was happy to lose the deposits at the other two sites; worth the money to find the right place. I couldn't give them a higher recommendation.
