Reviews of Matassa's Market
Bishop is the best. Born and raised N.O. he makes some of the best food in New Orleans. Great little deli/market with fresh fruit and veggies. If you are ever in New Orleans this is definitely a place to stop in and get the real New Orleans for sure. Let Bishop know Barry from Pittsburgh" said hello
Nice family owned store! Great lunch specials! Locals love it! Fresh produce!
It's all true. Unbelievably, deliciously, true. I've been looking for that local spot that I can't wait to come back to and here I am. I went in looking for some Mac and cheese today and came away with a seafood Mac and cheese that rivals anything I've had in the restaurants with a portion size that will feed me twice. Outstanding.
This place is great! Helpful, friendly staff, fresh food and produce. Excellent if you’re staying locally. I even left a bag of groceries there by accident and they held it for me and informed oncoming staff. They will be our go-to while in Nola. :-)
Everything!! Food groceries liquor cleaning supplies toilet paper. Cooked food too
Today the kitchen was open! And it is worth getting a stuffed container of all the deliciousness chef prepares. Homemade rich creamy mac and cheese. Jambalaya! Fried fish and baked fish. Loaded greens! Seafood boil. 5-hour roast. All of it prepared fresh, seasonal, local, and flavored to burst!
Great neighborhood grocery store but the real attraction is the small deli in the back. Chef Orlando cooks up all kinds of delicious dishes. Jambalaya, catfish, collard greens, roast etc. You'll like this place.
This is our favourite local store! First time walking in, the store manager Lou Lou immediately showed us where to get things we needed with such warmth and kindness. She has the best smile, cheerfulness and genuine way of making people feel comfortable and welcomed. She also helped us to store some beer as we don't want to carry it for the day's event. When my friend picked up the beer, she gave him a free mask for an Uber ride. We went back a few days later, and the original owner "Uncle Lui" was there. He is such a cool spirit and super easy going. We had a fun chat and learnt that this was his family store since the 1950s. Both Uncle Lui and the chef have awesome humor! You walk out of the store with a big smile and think fondly: "This is not your ordinary convenience store, it's a place with truly beautiful and chill souls!" Highly recommend visiting this place for meeting such wonderful people!
Small grocery store near our hotel. Looks a little run down, but head to the back and get the daily special at the food counter! So much flavor! Delicious food and kind service. Probably the best food we've had so far.
Best grocery store within walking distance of our Airbnb. They do a decent job with their limited space, and prices were as expected.
Beautiful in here now! Great selection of everything, good looking produce, can't wait to try the food from their kitchen.
ETA on 2/12/22: I don't know if I'm going to make it back over to tell you in person today, but the roast beef and bowtie mac n' cheese you made for lunch today was FIRE! SO glad we're neighbors :)
Just a tiny corner market. Nothing extravagant, but no reason to be.
I'm just here leaving a review because the gentleman up at the counter served myself and my group all weekend and was so gentle, genuine, and nice.
Had great reviews so was excited to try a new place as we are from out of state - tired and hungry. I ordered the chicken parmesan. Lots of chicken (bland) and lot of angel hair noodles but maybe a quarter cup spaghetti (marinara) sauce. So not enough at all. At about 10 or so bites and I was done. Could not even tell I ate anything on the plate. Husband ordered a Italian sub without peppers. He ended up getting just meat and bread. No cheese, tomato or lettuce. We did order desert to go carrot cake and tarimsu. Both excellent! Friendly staff!
Orlando in the back makes the best food in NOLA. He’ll give you samples and you won’t be able to resist. Highly recommend.
Amazingly friendly employees and good prices. The fried chicken is an amazing deal, some of the best fried chicken I've ever had! Lots of variety of snacks, fresh food, deserts, and everyday products.
This is a pretty great local grocery store. Prices generally reflect neighborhood, for better or for worse. Selection is about what I'd expect for the available space, and the deli in the back is great. If you're in the area and need a few basic things or a quick bite, stop in!
Nice grocery store in the French Quarter. Lots of products, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables.
Quite an extensive choice of wine, beer and alcohol.
Price is ok considering that you are downtown.
A standard. Very convenient with terrific wine and spirits selection. They are great neighbors too!!
All meals I had at matassa's grocery were exceptional. A great bargine when you don't want to spend too much.
Nice little corner store in the French Quarter. Has hot food, deli. pizza counter. Some basic groceries... All you would look for in a corner store...
As far as New Orleans corner groceries go, this is the classic. They have everything, and they deliver ! If it's not in stock, they will order it for you.
They had a surprisingly good and varied wine selection! Do recommend checking it out.
Great market right in the French Quarter! Prices are good, but the kicker is the food/deli cooked fresh in the back. The breakfast here was amazing, PERIOD! Very inexpensive, too. Give it a try if you're staying in/close to the Quarter.
The greatest place to enjoy a quality steak with the greatest mashed potato in the world, and it even has a very friendly chef and best mate Billy. The fired chicken.... was succulent, juicy, flavoursome and crisp, the best hidden jewel in all of New Orleans.
Nice little proper supermarket, with good enough produce for the Quarter. Hot food plates in the back.
Freindly Cashiers Cool local market. Hard to justify why when you purchase an item regularly, the following week you see an $0.80 cents markup. Now I won't be purchasing that item regularly. I seem to be the main person buying this one particular item due to my strict diet requirements and can't help but notice that big price change. If you're hungry and can eat without restrictions, this market carries a great lunch. The produce is very fair and they offer GF pizza and healthy things like almond milk. Pretty good selection of wine in your backyard which is very convenient. I dislike that I am forced to spend a minimum of $5.00 in order to use my debit card. If you need cakes/pastries to pair with your tea, this place has a very fair selection for that size of a store. I will continue to shop there however may use cash in the future.
One of the best food experiences I’ve had in NOLA. Great place for lunch w a great lunch counter in the back
Such a convenient place to grab whatever you need and the staff is wonderful (so are the fresh donuts everyday lol)
Cozy little corner store in the French quarter. Has an assortment of much needed items to finish that meal you started to prep already. Lol but beware some things have been there awhile and may have expired. Friendly staff and dogs are welcome so that's a big plus.
This rating was on food quality as I got breakfast on the run. The people were good. The food was super greasy. I expect what I got to have been greasy but this was excessive. Seemed to have a lot of neat things in their salad/cold case that I'd go back and try.
Awesome store in the French Quarter. Great alcohol selection and deli along with fresh produce and canned goods, soups and other staples.
The new and improved Matassa's Market!!! I have gone to this store for years. Recently had a much needed makeover to improve on the old single file shopping aisles as well as an improved food deli. As always a great food, BEvERage, and smokes deliver as well as what ever other groceries you need. Also a pretty good cheese selection for a small market.
Great selection of grocery items as well as fruits, veggies, and wines and liquors. Stopped in here a couple of times to stock up on fresh fruit, bottled water, Gatorade. Prices are just right for this area. A must see place.
If you want to visit a cool family owned grocery store stop by Matassa's, family owned and located in the heart of the French Quarter! In addition to groceries we have a great breakfast and tasty daily lunch specials! Too tired or hot to leave the house....daily delivery service is available.
Locally owned family market for three generations - fully stocked, excellent selection of beer, wine and liquor for such a small space, and they will order anything you need. They have fine sales weekly, and they DELIVER. The deli in the back is hot, tasty, fresh and the staff are all local. This is Real New Orleans, before the flood and the flood of come-lately/carpetbaggers. One star, indeed. You show your bourgie ignorance.
Has most of the basics you might need in a pinch. Milk, bread, fruit/veggies, prepared foods, snacks, cleaning products and of course liquor (at the front counter). Deli counter in back with grill has limited selection of breakfast choices, but maybe that is because we are from NY and used to different selections. They take credit/debit cards. Helpful staff.
Matassa's has great produce and grocery for quick things. Their deli counter is fantastic and their pizzas specifically are great. The Mufaletta pizza was so good. Everyone is really friendly too!
Excellent staff. Will special order almost anything. Good selection and good prices. It is a small place but it is a neighborhood store not a big box store so just get to know the neighbors better. ;)
Competitive Prices For A Local Market! Found The Cheesecake A Better Deal Here Than Rouse's, Even Though Rouse's Has Gourmet Options Slightly More Expensive Than Here. Friendly Warm Staff Family
Love this store, you can get just about anything you need from liquor to fried chicken. And the people there are so nice!!!!
The store looks great after the renovation. Hot food is delicious!
And they deliver!! Had bags of ice delivered for our party—saved the day!
Nice little store in the Quarter. Has a hot food/deli/pizza counter. Some basic groceries...all you need in a corner store!
I ordered a Gavillacio sandwich on chiabatta bread. Never heard of it before, but it sounded good.
Genoa salami, smoked bufala mozzarella, arugula, artichokes, sweet roasted peppers.
I ended up riding my bike 9 miles home before eating it, so it was a little wet on the bottom from the arugula, artichoke, and peppers, but no big deal. I put it on a plate upside down in the fridge for 10 mins and all was good. It has an Interesting flavor, super tasty mozzerella and salami, the roasted peppers add a savory component, the artichoke made it a little salty/tart, a bit of crunch from the chiabatta and arugula.
Totally satisfied. I'm gonna be back and try other food here!
RECOMMENDED
Great local family owned market. Good prices for food and drinks right in the French Quarter. The family has owned the business for over 50 years and it was a pleasure to patronize their market.
Friendly guy who runs the store, try to get a muffolata at the diner in the back... Also a very friendly guy!
You have to go to the back corner of the market where there's a chef that cooks daily. And it's always amazing.
Great little neighborhood market with all your basics including beer, wine, and liquor, but the star of the show is the little deli in the back. Some of the best deli sandwiches in NOLA.
Family-owned, historic grocery. Awesome hot food and sandwiches, delivery, good prices, friendly staff. Every time I shop at Matassa's I feel glad that I did.
About the best little grocery store one could hope for in the French Quarter of NOLA. Try not to go in with terribly high expectations if you come from a suburb with a Walmart-sized local supermarket with 100 choices for everything you look for. Many purported groceries in NOLA are effectively deli's offering sandwiches and fresh food with a small selection of dry goods on the side. Matassa's has a full freezer section, a relatively well stocked meat and lunchmeat section, a fair amount of dairy and fresh veggies, as well as the dry goods that are the base level of offering.
The shop is very close quarters and the shelves haphazardly placed/filled, which might make some uncomfortable. But packing everything in means that Matassa's had just about everything we were looking for. I was shopping for making food at an AirBNB condo I was staying in and was able to find green peppers, ground turkey, mushrooms, canned tomatoes, etc for spaghetti. On top of offering the proper products, the person at the register who I suspect was the owner was very friendly. I highly recommend this place.
I met the new owners and their famous kitty, Luna. The shrimp poor boy was great!!
Great place to grab some snacks, groceries or even prepared meal
I never write reviews. I love this place. I met the new owner and he is really nice. Id rather go here than rouses.
The store have great food and outstanding customer service and it was a pleasure to go there since 1994 .
Very accommodating, not to mention fast/friendly delivery. Will definitely shop here again
What lovely local staff in this mini market - I went in for a few bits and hoped to get a cool box. Came away with free cool packs from the friendly staff! 🙌🏼 …
Best store in the quarter. Love that they have local and long history. People young and old! Great food, great people, great environment!
Store has a lot to offer for a small space. Good service and inventory.
Wonderful little grocery. A big variety for a small place. Great produce.
It's a cute little bodega in the French Quarter. Seemed like it was fully stocked with liquor, groceries and grab and go food. Also there was a kitchen in the back
This is my friendly neighborhood market where every body knows your name. I highly recommend it. AND they deliver!!! Hot food too!
Best market in town. Love the mf’ers over here at Matassa’s. Prime time liquor at your neighborhood spot ♥️
Since 1995 I've been ordering from Matassa's. The food is good and the service is friendly. They care.
A sketchy bodega, but the staff was very friendly and helpful. They were closing the next day for a complete rehaul of the place, so I'm sure it's about to get much much nicer.
Real good food cooked by Orlando. Loving it.
Your little I got everything you need store in the French quarter. Selection of decent wine? Got it. beer? Got it. Etc pizza to.
Very friendly guys but a little over priced. Selection for a small market is good. Great customer service.
These guys are a tradition. Recently revamped and gorgeous but still with that French Quarter charm. Staff is impeccable and impossibly REAL. Love these guys
Love this store. Great family run grocery store. Many local options. Great food too.
It seems the more space is devoted to beverages, of all kinds, than groceries!
Friendly kind of old time Mom and Pop store where they still know your name. Also great sandwiches and some hard to find items
We stumbled upon this place while walking. The deli is in the back. Food made there and was delicious !
Great place. Will be shopping there regularly
Good food. Good customer service. Friendly delivery guy.
I remember going there as a kid. My grandma and uncle live in the next block. Great food and great memories.
Great grab and go food and sundries. A better alternative to Verti Marte and Quartermaster, the only downside is that they aren't 24 hrs.
I just stopped by the deli for some pie and was surprised at how good it was. I went back again before my vacation was over.
Straight up bodega but they have THREE types of hummus and a few fine cheeses.
Little grocery store and deli that has a little bit of everything. Nice selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.... And organic!
Very helpful and friendly staff with the exception of the cook, Ms. Lois. Very rude person who makes me want to walk out of my way to stay away from this deli...
Great Muffelatta sandwiches. Looking forward to trying the red beans and rice tomorrow.
Nice place to pick up some beer & wine with snacks in the Quarter.
Nice little grocery in the French Quarter. They have fresh fruit and produce.
Great little market n th Quarter. Friendly people. Pricey but convenient
Nice place but cook who also takes food orders seemed to be in a bad mood bad business in customer service!
