Reviews of Mardi Gras Zone
This place is excellent, the varying amount of products they offer is like nothing I've ever seen.
Great example, olive oil goes from generic 3 oz bottles to 32oz organic varieties.
Great find and will return
Awesome spot do get groceries also deli items salads and sandwiches pizza too
What an unique place! Has a very good selection of food and snacks (we were just looking for snacks and found some we've never heard of!). Also has a quirky New Orleans vibe.
I thought about giving three because all of the stuff is overwhelming , but the employee did offer to help me find anything on my way in the door. This place also gets points for being “one of a kind” and, obviously a supported member of the neighborhood. I like having this as my store for the next few months, although i doubt I’ll really see EVERYTHING that they have stuffed into this space.
This is a great place! But what kind of place is it, really? It's listed as a supermarket, but it's much, much more. It’s a combination of places, a new-wave fusion kind of place. It's a grocery store/coffee shop/deli/pizza place/dry goods store/costume shop/artisan's center/tourist trap ... and also a major local landmark in a neighborhood of local landmarks. Favorites include: wood-fired pizza, large and with thin crusts, made until about 4 am. Deli case entries include lasagna, jambalaya, shepherd's pie, mac-and-cheese, beef stroganoff, vegetable curry… and lots of lovely dessert choices, too. There’s a lovely write-up online that tells the story: “What's in Store: Mardi Gras Zone” by Sarah Ravits (in The Advocate, Mar. 6, 2017)
Amazing bakery in here. You wouldn’t think it from outside necessarily. This fresh olive rosemary loaf is fantastic.
One of the few places open 24/7 in the Marigny/Bywater area. They have an eclectic variety of groceries, household goods, clothes and party supplies. The new addition of frozen daquiris is heaven sent in NOLA's hell season! Upstairs is trippy even to the sober, so go check it out when not! Haha Enjoy & maybe you'll see me bent down in the broken bins aisle 😈
Saved my life at 12AM, have been thirsty as hell and went in there. Such a cool place!!! The old man behind the desk is also very friendly, may God bless him!
Stopped in for some basic essentials and beads. The grocery is a typical city corner store and convenience store atmosphere and price but worth it for all in one needs. Plus they have everything you might need down to fur baby products. Beads and costumes and makeup galore up top. But the real bonus was the Meatball sub from the guy opposite the pizza pirate. Holy sh*t was it good for 8.99! Sorry but I forgot to take a picture before I devoured most of it.
A lot of the Bywater is a food desert. This place has most everything.
This store is unique in every way, the prices are super high but it’s 24 hour giving you an option to get that one thing you’re missing when you decide to bake brownies or make spaghetti at 4 in the morning. It’s huge and there’s a large selection of oddities, I’ve found many random things I didn’t know I needed and discovered favorites that I haven’t found anywhere else. The staff are often not the friendliest but they’re working overnight so I’m not too critical. It’s great to have a late night option and it’s a fun store to shop.
Funky supermarket with a wide selection of food from around the world as well as your carnival supplies.
This place is a lot of things. There's an entire upstairs with all kinds of fun costume supplies for sale. Just be very cautious buying any groceries -- checking expiration dates, etc...but even that isn't a guarantee of product quality and this has been the experience of myself and several friends. They are really cool about returns and refunds though! I just stopped thinking of this place as a supermarket years ago.
The store LITERALLY, HAS EVERYTHING! You need it, they have it! They also have a Deli with DELICIOUS hot food, salads, pizza baked in a brick oven... I can't list everything, you just have to check it out for yourself! Trust me, you'll be glad you did! 😁 …
One of the BEST Hood Marts in Nola.. This place was a big part of post Katrina rebuild, they fed us while we cleaned the Bywater. Slices of pizza were great 7 years ago. Currently still a ton of coolers full of hundreds of drink items, groceries. Also full of random housewares and food you might need in a pinch.
Great grocery store awesome deli if you have a couple extra bucks kicking around. If you have a specific list of things to get this may not be the place for you. Friendly staff and oddly eclectic variety of items to pick from. It's not organized in a very intuitive way but that's part of its charm. It's a great place, I love it.
The fact that I can get vegan food to cook here amazes me!
Benny has supported many throughout the community as well as being one of the only stores open post Katrina. The service this store has provided will always be appreciated.
Always have everything you need and more, and you can't beat their prices!~
Just go to this weird supermarket and experience it yourself. The upper level iis and adventure and there's a piano up there if you feel like playing a tune. Strange but good selection of products. Of I need convenience store type things, or just a few items, this is simply the most fun place to go.
They are truly 24/7 with only one day a year they close for rest. They've been only getting better and better! Being one of only a handful of places in the neighborhood that actually have a pretty good range of produce. I had to do some last minute grocery shopping on christmas day and they helped me in a pinch. Even though they do have tourist things available they also have an amazing deli and fresh baked goods. I adore them!
The owners and team that run this store do such a good job. Always good food, beer and liquor selection is very broad, always stocked throughout the entire store, never wait too long to checkout, always friendly people working, I could go on and on about how great this place is. I'm in there several times a week.
I used to shop in this store regularly when I lived in the marigny shortly after it opened. Without being in the direct vicinity anymore, I had forgotten the place existed until my ride stopped there when I needed to buy something to drink. For a moment, despite instantly recalling the place, the specifics of the arrangement of the place escaped me completely. A pleasant engaging young guy named Kevin who was manning the register laughed and immediately reacquainted me with the surprising tangenital path of the aisle I needed. No way id have gravitated in the right direction without him! Thanks so much again Kevin, I was glad to stop by a old neighborhood haunt and even more so not to blunder around. :)
I love Mardi Gras Zone. They usually have everything I need and everything I didn't know I needed. Not to mention the staff is great! I've never had a bad experience here. The only thing is that this place can be kind of pricey depending on what you get. I do recommend it to anyone who might be looking for some beads for a Mardi Gras celebration. Awesome store!
Amazing variety of juices and energy drinks. Open 24/7. Nice people. Good food. Great option that has replaced the wretched gas station on Claiborne and Elysian as my go-to at night when I want to grab food and drink and am not up for Buffa's or something like that.
Pretty good grocery store to get supplies if you’re staying local. We got most of our vacation snacks here: water, chips, cookies etc. They have a pretty huge selection of drinks, some microwaveables, chips and whatnot. I did grab a bag of expired chips and they were gross and stale, but I didn’t realize it until I got back to where I was staying, so be cautious of that... and I’m sure they wouldn’t taken care of it but it wasn’t worth it to trip back for a bag of chips (lol). They also have a hot deli area with a small selection of sandwiches and whatnot.
They have everything you might need for a zombie apocalypse, minus the weapons. This place is crazy! Costumes, imported trinkets and Mardi gras throws, food like a grocery store would have from all over the world, also a deli, fresh brick oven pizzas 24-7. Best place to walk into for a drink and a snack at any time then back to ratting the streets. Always cool characters hanging out to talk to as well.
Say what you will about this place's quality, but I've seen a marked improvement over the year I've been patronizing it regularly. The produce selection has expanded in recent months - the owner is making a concerted effort to use primarily local produce and bring in more products from small local farms. So far he has (very pricey) free-range eggs, a good seasonal veggie selection, and some local sausages. The prices vary between cheaper than chains on some commonly-found items and higher than Whole Foods on rarities. Overall, the store is well-stocked with a HUGE organic and growing gluten-free selection, and though the owner can be a bit gruff, I can tell that he's trying to make this a truly local business, which I fully support. When he gets local meats in stock and lowers the price of eggs, I'll give him 5 stars!
During a visit to NO we stayed at a house nearby. This store was great for buying coffee, snacks, sandwiches and gifts. Downstairs is food and household items and upstairs are Mardi Gras beads and decorations. The counter staff was friendly. The store is much bigger than it looks from the outside.
Employees here are basically amazing, the food selection is good, the deli selection is great (most of the time), they've got WiFi and hot coffee....It's my favorite market of all time.
...did I mention they have fresh pizza, too?
A realy weird but interesting super market
walking into this store is like having a weird dream where your brain is trying to create a space that's between a cute bistro and walmart. it just gets weirder the further you walk in. Great place to grab donuts for breakfast.
Most bizarre stop on our bead run but we had a blast and found some very unusual items.
I work at Mardi Gras Zone in the deli and I love it. I make a daily hot line, cold case salads, desserts, and more! It’s very much a niche market with American and international items that I love to cook with. I bought everything I needed for Mardi Gras upstairs and I also buy own groceries from MGZ. I highly recommend MGZ and I must say, the food is amazing! 😉
It is an interesting mix and mash of products with some good prices. VERY good fresh deli and awesome free samples! The staff was friendly and the store was very "New Orleans".
Some stuff was a little old but this store has a good selection of food and household items. I kinda couldn't help loving it because it's a funky store with lots of things you wouldn't expect like vegan and natural products.
The staff is curt , not welcoming at all and not very helpful. The store isn't as clean as it can be. The produce is fair. The ONLY reason to go in is the fact it is open 24 hrs and you need something quick. The prices are high as well... thankful roberts opened in tge neiighborhood.
Love this place! They have a grovery store a pizza place a delli they have like hot plates and a bakery basically woth great red velvet cakes and tiramisu too. They have cigarettes and a clothing mardi gras store upstairs which is kind of odd vut neat. They are open 24/7. Definitly go check mardi gras zone out. It is one super cool place to go when nothing else is open and you are hungry or want just a snack. Pizza could use a little more sauce but good considering how late they serve.
Has everything you need and don't need, come check it out.
Amazing range of products including household stuff, natural foods, snacks, groceries, and grab-and-go foods. Not a fan of the "pizza" and haven't tried the prepared foods up front, but love it for a cold drink (tons of refrigerators) or random grocery item.
MGZ saved Thanksgiving! Friendly staff and delicious food made my holiday meal amazing. It was a seriously good Thanksgiving feast. Also their sandwiches are huge and tasty and the pizza is great
Eccentric Neighborhood Grocery Store located in the Marigny neighborhood. Very few 'standard' national brands, healthy, organic & vegan items are plentiful as well as supplements, pet food, toiletries, etc.
This owner also has a farm west of the city and it provides eggs, fresh meats and veggies.
House made packaged foods and desserts available, as well as fresh baked pizza, by the slice, local coffee by the cup and frozen Daquris!.
The grocery is overpriced, but the real loser is the pizza joint. The place itself has endless potential, I hate to see it so underutilized
Walked in the door very nicely lit compared to other shops in the area. Walked in looking for nic nacs and ended up buying more than that. They have a good selectionof local hot sauces that would cause me to make a special trip back for just that item again!
A real New Orleans place for sure with all of the unexpected good and bad thrown in together. Read the reviews by people who say they just moved here and file them under "Oh wow". This was a Mardi Gras bead warehouse and wholesale trinket place before the storm. After Katrina It was the first place to reopen thanks to good old Arab entrepreneurial spirit re-invented as a food store. Nine years out and they still have the loose health code adherence issues that other reviewers write about. Especially avoid the coolers if you need frozen foods and dairy because it's like they turn the things off every day for a few hours to save money on utilities. They do have Lucky Strike cigarettes, something never seen anymore outside of Frady's which is why I go there. The pizza is very good I hear if you buy it freshly made and watch it through the entire process to your plate. Read the one star reviews for the reason why you should do that. I'm glad it's in my neighborhood when I'm in a pinch for something and need some adventure in my life, and I'm glad I can drive elsewhere to do the serious food shopping. Also the ATM charges wicked high fees and I know two people who have been robbed in recent months in the vicinity by drive-by criminals. Bon temps rouller! All NOLa all the time.
My brother got a skateboard for $10 and not broken at all what a deal
I love this place. Always a stop when Im in New Orleans! Good place to get souvenirs, snacks, and groceries! They also have a laundromat.
Open 24 hrs has great novelty Mardi Gras stuff sometimes for super cheap can be a bit pricey though on regular everyday items but has one of the largest variety of cold drinks I've ever seen
Wow. This place has very unique items. They also have som good late night food. Also a wonderful place to grab a nice hot plate lunch and take on a picnic.
They have a great selection, from the domestic 2 international as well as natural/organic on personal to grocery items.
The people that work behind the counters are very helpful and knowledgeable my only drawback is pricing is rather high.
No one should miss a chance to visit Mardi Gras Zone. Look past the non-descript exterior and come inside for vegan meat substitutes, Cajun eggs and sausage, huge bottles of Topo Chico and whatever else you either knew or didn’t know you needed. Before you leave go upstairs. Don’t forget to go upstairs. It’s very important. Only closed on high holy days I believe. 5 stars for selection, culture, character and contribution to the community. No wine to speak of, but beer and liquor can be had.
Open Christmas Day! After I found myself driving around for an hour on Christmas Eve, trying to score Contadina tomato paste and mirlitons at one closed business after the next. Just cereal and nondairy milk at home in Algiers...
I can ALWAYS depend on Mardi Gras Zone to sustain my nocturnal lifestyle. I've been shopping here nearly 15 years. THANK YOU!
Such an AWESOME experience! Amazing, friendly, helpful staff. Good fresh food and eclectic mix of things to choose from. Definitely will be going back.
It's a grocery store with pizza and deli, but we came for the BEADS... turns out they have warehouses full of Mardi Gras stuff and they even play host to some floats, Anyways the point being is the place is a complex and is much larger then it appears at first. Good luck and Happy Mardi Gras!
First time shopper this past week... Fantastic selection plus the hot lunch special is great value! We will be back on our next trip to NOLA.
This is a wonderful supermarket with almost anything you can think of. They have a very impressive selection of goods, and their deli serves an excellent pizza.
I WISH there were more than five stars that I could give to Mardi Gras Zone. What an amazing place! We recently moved to Bywater and were lamenting the lack of grocery stores when we found Mardi Gras Zone. They have an organic international foods selection that rivals Whole Foods. Same for their environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty personal products. Great local resource for Marigny Bywater residents in need of groceries. I only wish they had fresh fish. A small drawback to a great store.
This place always makes me smile. They have esoteric items for a wide array of uses, from Vienna sausages to Mardi gras masks. Don't go in thinking you'll do your week's grocery shopping, but you'll be charmed for sure.
Love this place. Everything under one roof. Deli, fresh baked pizza, deserts...make groceries, grab a bite. Great people and wonderful owner.
This is a little treasure in the neighborhood of Bywater. They had way more selection than I ever anticipated, and I find myself returning over and over again. Really nice and helpful staff. Yummy food!!! Love it!
One of my favorite 24hr places around. Everyone is very friendly and laid back. They also have tons of vegan options
My go to for late night groceries. They have a good selection of specialty items (vegan and international). It's a bit pricey, but worth it late at night.
Good place to get odds and ends food, pop, beer paper products and small tools etc... Just a little spendy. Owner is really nice.
Last year i showed up for mardi gras on the previous fri. evening i was blown away by the kindness fairness and general helpful attitude of the owner and employees.Being a musician i used the place as a center for most of what i did ,as the food was affordable and so very very good, my friend paul stevenson had a daily gig there and i sat in to show em just how intense the blues can be and they loved it .
With a place like this to eat and congregate at no street musician should be intimidated by going to New Orleans.
I was truly impressed and plan to return in late jan. for more good times thank, you Benny and the Mardi Gras Zone, David Raye.
Combination bodega, laundry, health food, deli, mardi gras supply store. 24 hours. The staff is cool. No bags, don't be salty.
Great selection, good prices, Friendly staff & great the only place around that’s open late!
Love this place. Been going since before Katrina. Thankful for Benny and all who work there. Great people, great space.
Very nice neighborhood store, great pizza, and deli counter with prepared foods ready to take home, heat and eat. Love this place...
Mildly expensive, Attempts at Holistic Foods. Accepts EBT for Fresh Oven Fired Pizza. But open 24/7.
Love this place. Great service, wonderful staff and amazing selection of food and drinks. Delicious spinach lasagna and pizza too.
Good 24 hour store. You can get almost anything here. Pizza is good and they now also serve alcohol
Awesome place!! So many funky things, do check prices though because some things are expensive but love this place overall!! 😄 …
Great place. Well stocked with a wide variety of items. Bywater's answer to Walmart
Reminds me of a bodega in NYC but on a larger scale with pizza and a deli. Staff is always friendly and it's great if you need/want something at 4am.
Actually Today because of covid I'd give it about 2 and a 1/2. Prior to that I would given it 4 and a 1/2 stars it was open 24 hours A-day. Now they close at 1am.
An esoteric persian bizarre type warehouse type building that sells a strange collection of mardi gras memorabilia as well as $ store type merchandise. Also they serve pizza from a brick fireplace.
Great little neighborhood grocery store. Plenty of vegan options!
respect to MGZ.. kickin' up some king cake since that b*tch Katrina out towards the Lake. the bess grocery/deli inna 'hood. geaux team! go for the pizza, coconut water, veggies, late nite grub for your Jones!
Good small grocery store with a wide selection of items for such a small location. Also have made to order pizza and sandwiches and other hot food.
Good late night food. I love the pizza by the slice. Nice little neighborhood grocery store. No alcohol though.
Great little place. Has everything you can think of. Literally. Vegan or non gluten dieters must see
Don't judge a book by it's cover. The outside looks very bootleg, but the inside is good stuff. Highly recommended
You can find gluten free and organic groceryhere if you search hard enough inside this huge store. Open very late too
Great neighborhood grocery store with fresh pizza, deli case, cookies, bakery and a wide selection of household goods.
Went a week after Ida. Empty of people and almost empty with stock. Will go again for sure !
Fun store to.explore! Love the staff too!
Great neighborhood grocer, then you go upstairs...*mouth hangs open amazed*. You gotta check it out for yourself!! Wow!
Convenient yes, but prepared foods are massively overpriced considering the cost at local cafes. Great selection though.
BD's would have merited 5 stars if Daddy had actually been onsite...
Great grocery and restaurant. Hand tossed pizza. Opened 24 hours. Cool one stop shop.
It's kind of a strange place, but it has the best selection of any 24 hour market in the area.
Such a great find in the marigny! I always stay in that neighborhood whenever I'm in NOLA and it's a grocer staple of mine!
I love this place. Full supermarket and the best place to get a slice of pizza 24 hours.
I know this place as i know my home the food has become a little off but new cooks new dishes i have yet to try them but smells good
a weird little place! they have all the basic groceries you need, and upstairs is all the basic mardi gras supplies you'll need too!
Your Go-to store in the Marigny! Great grab and go food and all the wares you need to keep rolling.
Expensive, creepy, fun, weird and open all year all day and night. Expensive, and some of the food is funky but they do have interesting alternatives.
This store is very unassuming from the outside, but is an amazing adventure once you go inside!
Mannnnnnnn!!!!! This store has everything I have to come back because they had a lot of things I wanted but I was broke 😂 but overall I love this store …
Great variety of foods. A little pricey, but it's open 24 hours.
Great eclectic selection of prepared and shelf food. Good neighborly vibe.
I like that it's there and is open 24/7 (at least when I lived in the Marigny last year), but the freshness of their food is questionable.
The store has the essentials but make damn sure you get a daiquiri on your way out. Damn tasty.
A little too organic with their food options, and a little pricey. It's not like we have a real grocery store to go to, though.
Pizza by the slice 24 hours, and anything you need to make your temporary stay more welcoming
Best wood oven pizza in town! Open 24/7 Love this place!
Open all night for many needs. Great deli case, although a bit pricey.
Quaint neighborhood one stop shop open 24/7 great deli and Sandwiches too!
Terrific eclectic grocery store. It was odd how many things i found familiar and new.
They have things in there that you can't find other places and good service and courteous
They have a little bit of everything and then some. Worth a good look. Always surprised at what's on the shelves.
Excellent selection of foods to meet all dietary needs with an awesome staff!!
Only place to get fresh produce after midnight. Always lock up your bike twice.
Great place open all day and night. Bring extra cash here because its more expensive than you think.
Has a surprising amount of products. Probably really good for the people who live near here.
Really interesting place to visit even for a local like me.....just thought the entry fee was ridiculously high
Open 24 hours, nice staff, do check the expiration dates on purchases tho
Nice neighborhood funky store. Need munchies, pizza, beer and Tampax? Score!
Benny keeps his store open almost every day of the year. Watch for expired items.
Open 24 hours and has a really interesting selection of stuff.
Great 24 hour place to get tons of awesome groceries.
Prices are pretty high but they have a wide selection of stuff.
Unique 24 hour shopping, for food, beverage and so much more.
It's alright but very pricey and doesn't really carry your run of the mill things
Nicely stocked small grocery with pizza, sweets, and pre made foods.
Surprisingly great selection of grocery and other for a long weekend trip.
Love it. Way over priced but convenient. Local fav and hangout
I love this place. Its open 24 hours and has many options.
This is the 24 hour spot for food, frivolity and all the little funky things you had no idea you needed.
Good place that is open 24 hours. I would give a 5 star but it is rather expensive
Hole in the wall place. The hole being chiseled out of brick. It feels like a cave but with shelves
Can't beat a corner store you can find just about anything in, including a quick costume buy.
Fun to shop upstairs after making groceries or ordering and eating pizza or from the deli.
Always a good spot to get something good to eat.
Good chance the grocery stuff you want at 3am is here.
I'm amazed at the size of this place. We walked in expecting a little store and discovered Narnia.
One stop shopping for groceries, Mardi Gras accessories, and some camping equipment.
Great discount section, occasionally has a few gems.
The prices are ridiculous, for the most part. But at least they have some organic brands.
Good late night good. Mardi Gras supplies. Friendly Staff.
Cool use of the space! Good selection. Great service.
Open late.
Great food, exotic packaged foods at excellent prices.
Always friendly service, great food, extensive variety
