Reviews of Central Grocery and Deli
Tania Carosi
This location is actually closed due to renovations but they have their famous muffalettas at the liquor store next door. You can purchase a full (4 pieces) or half (2 pieces) and they are huge! We got a full and could only eat half. It was delicious!!
Graciela Conklin
One of the best muffuletta ever!! The bread was fresh along with all the meats. The olive relish spread made the sandwich unique. There was a line. Advise, look ahead of time so you know what items you want. Limited places to sit but we managed to find a spot.
Brendan Qi
A satisfying sandwhich that can conquer the mightiest of stomachs. I find that the spread of olive, cauliflower, and more is unmatched and truly hits the metaphorical spot. Also, who doesn’t love mortadella. I adore the sesame bread as well. 5/5 stars

It's been 20 years since I've been here and it's still an incredible muffuletta. We did get a little bit of ingredients from the grocery portion as well. Recommend getting here when they open.

I was visiting New Orleans for the weekend and a friend said we had to get a Muffuletta at Central Grocery… I’m SO glad we did! I loved it! We shared one between my wife, 3 kids, and myself. It was delicious and the workers were all so friendly and kind! I wish I could have one shipped home!!!
Keith Byrd
The Muffaletta is a New Orleans staple. Love this place!! Get some Zapps chips and an Abita beer with your sandwich and you're living the Big Easy!!
Albert Cura
This was something I have always wanted and it was so worth it. We came all the way from West Texas. This is absolutely delicious and I can't wait till I can go in the next time we are in town
Sushi Sue
The original muffuletta! Worth a taste. Granted, it is very oily so prepare to taste a lot of salt and oil. No line in the mornings and on weekdays, with plenty of indoor seating and restrooms inside. Only docking one star because we expected the sandwiches to be prepared fresh but the counter guy had a huge stack of them sitting by him early morning with no one in the prep area so not really sure when they were actually made. Maybe they prep in advance in case of heavy demand, but on a non-busy day it would’ve been great to see them being made.

I was shocked to see Central closed... its been a staple of NOLA my entire life. Thankfully I got the story and my sandwich next door. There are temporarily closed to remodel but the famous muffuletta sandwich was able to be purchased at the store next door... so as usual Central did not disappoint. Hope to see you all reopen soon and best of luck.

I stopped by Central Grocery before I left New Orleans for a Muffuletta. My first time ever getting a Muffuletta or dining here. I got it to go so that I would have one last iconic food item from New Orleans. I got half of a Muffuletta and have one disappointment. I wished that I would have at least gotten a whole one. A great sandwich and a must if in New Orleans. I will get more the next time I am in town.
A.D.
A half muffuletta is plenty to share between 2 people! Service was fast and friendly. And the sandwich was a 10/10! Be sure to take time to browse the shelves for unique and imported culinary finds.
Arthur MacNew (Art)
Yes the Muffuletta really is as good as people say it is! It might seems pricy but it's a big sandwich with really good bread and ingredients. If you compare it to a quality hoagie in Philly or Hoboken, you will see the price point really is where it should be. I'm pretty sure we'll be getting a couple for the trip home!!
dorene bechard
OMG the muffuletta was unbelievable. Soooo delicious. Fresh. Packed beautifully and delivered via UPS using Goldbelly. They did a great job as well. Arrived on time to Florida. Definitely would order again and refer both Central Grocery and Goldbelly. Order the muffuletta!!!
Greg Knapp
Fun deli and grocery, right across from the French Market. Deli is in the back with counter space. Claim is to have invented the muffuletta, an Italian sub, and the secret is their green olive salad they spread on the sandwich. Delicious. The grocery section is well worth taking a look at and if you want to bring back a little of New Orleans with you, the have jars (spicy or regular) of their own Olive Salad at the register.
Jason
As usual great product. Quick service. I have NEVER had any issues. I just wish I were closer than 5 hours away from such awesomeness. I for sure will be back. Make sure this is a stop if you are in the area!
Justin Maxwell
You have to stop here and order a muffaletta! Well maybe just order half cause they are huge! Central grocery is the first and original muffaletta. There is a place to eat in or you can take it to go and walk around. They have lots of spices and seasonings, but that sandwich is the reason I always stop by.

Got out Too late for breakfast so had to try something Local 👌This is a full grocery store that makes the Original Muffuletta . The line is filled with locals and Tourist. We ordered a half Muffuletta bought Zaggs chips and drinks. Available Parking on the streets is rare. A very tasty Olive salad with a variety of Italian deli meats and cheese.
Across the street from the Joan of Arc statue.

Home of the ORIGINAL muffuletta. There is no sandwich like it - homemade Italian bread, salami, cheese, olive salad. Absolutely delicious. Pandemic? No worries. The owners are doing a great job with employees wearing masks, social distancing in the dining area, etc.
Milton Irizarry Jr
Amazing! Delicious sandwich. We got a whole one, cut in 4ths it was really really really good. I think we all could have eaten more. I couldn't get enough. I'm going back before I leave today. It's the perfect amount of bread to meat ratio. The olive tapenade is what makes it perfect! You have to go get one, you will not be sorry, (unless you're a miserable person). Highly recommended! The stuffed artichoke is ok too, buy stick with the muffaletta.
Kelly Nelson
Even if you have no idea what on earth a Muffuletta is, you MUST stop here and find out!! I am NOT a sandwich fan generally speaking but this was absolute perfection and the staff were as friendly and cheerful as could be! My girlfriends and I came here and were in and out in 5 minutes flat! We took the muffulettas with us to cafe dumonde. 1/4 of one of these sandwiches and an an order of beignets from there was the perfect meal! Do yourself a favor and stop here while in N.O.!
Christopher Dahman
I finally stopped in to grab a muffuletta while in my most recent trip to New Orleans. THE BEST EVER! I’ll go here for one every time now. The store is very historical and has a lot of products that you wouldn’t find elsewhere. Friendly staff and cool place to stop. Grab a bag of Zapp’s chips with it!
Juan Lima
Home to the OG Muffuletta. We ordered a half sandwich and pleasantly surprised with how big it was. Good amount of flavor. We took a seat inside the store to finish our brunch before walking back.
Jean Miller
We loved the muffuletta. (A half was definitely enough for 2 people.) I was also thrilled to find wonderful spice packets at reasonable prices. As a cookbook author, I am always looking for new things to try. :)
Food & Travel
Every time we visit New Orleans we stop at Central Grocery and Deli. They have some of the best muffuletta sandwiches in New Orleans.

Friendly staff and the place is clean. A must go for anyone wanting to get the original Muffaletta! The Muffaletta was huge and delicious. A whole one is enough for two hungry adults.
Robert Molaison
Home of the original muffalatta sandwich. Once you have tried it, all the imitators fall short. These sandwiches are enough to feed two quite adaquetly.
Although there's seating places for eating in, most people take one home or back to the hotel for later. These sandwiches travel and keep well and are still yummy the next day.
Besides the obvious draw, you'll enter into an old world Italian grocery. Find imported canned items, mixes, as well as an impressive amount of cheeses and sausages/ salami, and salad items.
Even if you just want to look inside, it's well worth the time.
Foodie Fort Lauderdale
New Orleans gem!!!Muffuletta sandwich!! I ordered half of a sandwich because they are massive. Half is enough to feed two people. Also you need to get a jar of sandwich olives!

Loved the muffuletta! I don't eat pork so I had it without the meat and it was just as delicious!! The bread, cheese, and olive oil spread is AMAZING!!
Howard Turner
I came just for the muffuletta so the review will center around that. First the sandwich is huge definitely more than enough for two people maybe three or four depending on appetite. The bread is fresh and delicious. There’s that nice layer of cheese in the middle to cut through the consistency of the meat and the olive salad that it’s topped with is surprisingly tasty. The only compliant is that it’s salt laden, but, that’s a deli sandwich for ya. Definitely a tourist spot and they keep the line moving as they pre-make these sandwiches throughout the day.
P Ieong
I'm not a big sandwich or even olives person but these muffulettas are life. The whole sandwich just works together. The sesame seed bun, the ham, the pepperoni, cheese and olives.. such a simple combination but it's absolutely delicious.
Xabier Granja
Well, if you want to have an actual Muffuletta, there's no better place than this. There's always a big like, but moves quickly. Just come and order one to go, then eat it at the park or walk a couple minutes and eat it by the river. It's made of salami, ham, two types of cheeses and their olive salad (olives with pickled red pepper, celery and cauliflower). It's an excellent sandwich that you should experience at least once.
Melanie Tam
I didn't get to try Central Grocery (or any muffuletta) the last time I was in New Orleans. So this time around, I made sure that I had time to try one from the original source.
Served on a flattened loaf of bread, this sandwich consists of marinated olive salad, salami, ham, mortadella, Swiss cheese, and provolone. It was too salty for me. Maybe there was just too much olive salad action going on.
One whole one can easily serve four people. The sandwich is huge. They have a few already premade, so if you're in a hurry, you'll be able to grab one pretty quickly.
I don't think this sandwich is for me, but I'm still glad I got the chance to try it and cross it off my NOLA bucket list.
Char I
The sandwich is very overrated. Honestly I could go to so many italian deli and get the same thing if not better. The bread was at least nice and soft. We went at around 4pm and there was no line at all.
Rudy Perkins
On a 1 week vacation I had to return to this place for lunch. The only place I ate at twice. The muffaletta is amazing. If I lived here I would drop entire paychecks on their groceries too. So much quality meats and cheeses. I love this place.
Benjamin Feijóo
Fantastic muffaletta! Friendly staff and clean eating area. Definitely a place to come to get full fast with a lot of flavor! This was recommended by a native to me and I know why!
Twofor Breakfast
The home of the original Muffuletta sandwich is a small Italian grocery store located near Jackson Square. There is usually a fast moving line from outside the door to the deli counter. If you decide to stay and eat your sandwich, inside, there are stools and high tables in the back.
The Muffuletta is a salty sandwich, this is because of the layers of olive salad that is in it. Central Grocery puts a lot of olives in their sandwich, but it is makes up for it by using phenomenal meats and cheeses and soft delicious buttery bread topped with sesame. You can get it in two sizes a half and full size(a half is usually good for two people).
It’s worth a trip when going to New Orleans
Gregory “Saint”
Such a nice food market to go shopping there... it’s a good deli with many spices and unique things for cooking... it reminds me the old grocery stores of America... one guy suggest us to go there and have mufulletta sandwich... he said it is great... and sure he was right... such a great taste it has but it become better with an old fashion soda drink...I recommend this place 100%... worths a visit if you want something different...
Vanessa D
We had to visit the place the home of the original muffuletta. They offer the sandwich either whole or half. We went with the half which is already made and cut so you get the sandwich right away. The half was plenty big enough for us to share as we were planning exploring and more of the city.
The sandwich was good. The olive spread was not as overly powerful. I was surprise as i'm not the biggest olive fan to beginning with. But everything was balanced. I would say the sandwich could use more meat since the bread is thick. But it's understandable why the bread is thick as the sandwiches are premade so they don't get soggy from the olive spread. Overall it was delicious and I would totally get it again.
Cody P
Home of the original muffuletta sandwich, so definitely worth a visit if you're hungry. You can order half or a whole sandwich, and they're HUGE. Very oily too so make sure to lean in when you eat it. The inside is tiny and you'll likely need to take it to go, but if you want a nice and scenic place to eat it, walk just a little ways down the road and you'll get to Jackson Square which makes for the perfect spot to enjoy your muffuletta.
Yogis Dogie
Love this place. Great place to grab a sandwich or some stuff for a quick picnic somewhere! Great friendly staff. Very close to everything else you want to see in the French Market area. Go early for shorter wait times.
Melanie Goetsch
The hype is warranted. Such a delicious Muffuletta! I've had that kind of sandwich before. But this one is the original. One of a kind experience. Awesome staff. A 1/2 sandwich will feed 2 people for lunch. A quarter sandwich is plenty for one. Thanks!
M K
Delicious muffaletta! Even the olive hater in our party loved the olive salad inside. The 4 serving sandwich was cut into 4 and the perfect size for 4 people.
Charles Adkins
Muffaletta is clearly why you're heading here, but the selection of authentic Italian deli items is pretty amazing. I knew it would be great when I walked in and saw the Pope John Paul II poster right next to olive oil and ravioli advertising. I had a half Muffaletta and a root beer and it was really perfect.
Tamara VanAcker
Tried the muffaletta. They serve it cold. My sandwich was lacking on the olive salad. Reasonably priced and very filling.
Douglas Cherry
The muffuletta is well worth the wait...dont forget to pick up a jar of the olive mix before you buy your muffuletta...way easier than getting back in line!
Christine Joy
A must stop when in New Orleans! Read about this place for the best muffaletta sandwich, and it DID NOT disappoint! Follow the right doors in and out and grab one of these! 1/2 for about $11 and whole for $20 - very comfortably feeds 4 (whole). Went next door to a small liquor store and grabbed cold drinks and chips, and then went across the street to the water front to have lunch. Perfect! Best thing Ive eaten since we got here! BTW don’t let the olives scare you off - get it just how they make it, I usually HATE olives, and I devoured mine.
(Picture below of whole sandwich is upside down when you unwrap it ☺️ the top of the bun is loaded with fresh toasted sesame seeds!)
Also, if looking for to take things home, they sell the tapenade, AND have other grocery items including Cafe DuMonde beignet mix and coffee VERY CHEAP!
Ave A.
I was actually really disappointed in most of the food I ate in NOLA but the sandwich was amazing! Love the atmosphere of the shop and the friendly staff. Ive told everyone I know to visit here, you should too!
Shanelle S
Birthplace of the muffuletta and an actual Italian grocery store. We wanted to pick up some sandwiches to eat in the Louis Armstrong Park. Came here on a Wednesday morning around 9:30am and waited for 20 min in line to order. The whole muffuletta is cut into fours and was perfect for our family to have a satiating lunch prior to our cemetery and swamp tour. There was a variety of Italian goods and they have Zapps chips right before you check out (the temptation was too real for those crawtator chips). They do have an indoor eating area and they do take credit card.
For the food itself, it was delicious. The bread is soft and the acidity of the olive salad against the saltiness of the salami was a great combination. You definitely do need some water after eating it though!
C Mathews
The muffaletta was delicious! Best combination of flavors in the meats and cheese selections!! Definitely a must!!
Christy Streetman
A "MUST STOP" If your in New Orleans it would be a sin to pass by. They have a live jazz band, open seating you can still take in the scenery. Fast friendly service. My husband messed up and ordered himself a whole Muffaletta sandwich.. Unless your a competitive eater my advice would be to share it with a friend!!
Ellie Kang
Original muffuletta was born here. They even prepackaged their olive salad sauce for travelers. A grocery filled w many little things!
A Clarified Woman
Visiting for a few days. As we were wandering around looking for a good po'boy place (go to Johnny's Po'boy on St Louis Street), saw the sign. Neither of us have ever had this local sandwich, so we went inside to try it. The interior is definitely an eclectic collection of memorabilia alongside a working grocery store that makes a very popular sandwich. They carried local chips and sodas, and had a small cafeteria style seating area. Very friendly and patient staff.

Great experience. A must go for any one. One of the best foods I have ever eaten!!! I will be going back any time I get a chance. First time in NOLA and I am so glad I stopped at Central Grocery for a Muffaletta.
Geoff Lorch
Had to visit for the world famous Muffuletta sandwich which DID NOT disappoint! Yum!! Wanted to make it back there to grab some of their olive tapenade/remoulade and other specialties, but never managed to get back there again inside of their 5pm closing time.
Doreen C
I came here for their famous muffaletta sandwiches. Their portions are HUGE! I ordered an entire muffaletta sandwich for 2 people, but unless you're very hungry I think ½ a muffaletta is perfect for 2 people. The taste is really good - savory and satisfying. It's filled with assorted deli meats, cheese, and an oily olive paste.
Robert Hattan
Awesome grocery store with world famous muffulettas! If you're looking for local dishes or sauces to buy this is the place. Nothing fancy but definitely a must see stop in New Orleans.
Keegan Mistry
The home of the original Muffaletta! This place is awesome and the sandwiches are HUGE! True old real Italian market with space in the back to eat the delicious sandwiches they're known for. Located in the French market area makes it a nice break from busier areas of FQ.
DS B
Very friendly staff! The line goes quickly (it was a 10 minute wait from about five people out the door), and there’s plenty of counter seating inside. We got the whole for $20 (half is $10 and supreme with more meat is $30); it was a bit pricey, but a fun thing to do in NOLA. The bread was delicious, we just thought the sandwich needed a bit more meat and olive salad, so get the supreme.
Lisa B
This sandwich, is AMAZING! I’d go back to New Orleans just for another one! Must try if you visit.
Random One
Cant wait to get back to this place FINALLY snagged a couple of Muffulettas. Every time in the past they were either closed or already SOLD OUT! I was fortunate this time there were less than 20 left I grabbed 2 whole sandwiches, a jar of olive salad and one of their quality burlap bags. It’s exactly what you want it to be! Delicious!
CRYSTAL CASH
Muffaletta was perfect! Best Italian sandwich ever! Will definitely order again, when I return to New Orleans. Make sure you have it with a root beer.
Lakeesha Thomas
OMG their muffaletta is so good! I was visiting from New Jersey and it was recommended that I go to Central Grocery to get an original muffaletta. I'm so glad that I did. The sandwich was great and the woman at the counter was so friendly. I went back the next day and got another one to take back home to Jersey as well as a several jars of of olive salad. My only complaint is that the muffalettas are pricey for a sandwich. $23.50, but treat yourself.
Amelia Pushelberg
Was recommended to come here by a friend and the muffuletta was amazing. The half order is plenty enough for two people to try but if you are looking for a meal get the full order and split between two.
The olives were so fresh as was the bread. Not a crazy line up when I left maybe five people ahead of me.
Roanna Jamir
Love love love their muffulletta. I'm actually craving one right now! It's so delicious and good on the budget. If you're really hungry go for a half order and that should fill you up. Half an order is about $10. It's already sliced in the middle so if you and a pal just want to taste it. It's good enough to share. It does have a very strong olive taste which I love. If you don't like olives though this might not delight you as much. The grocery concentrates on unique Italian ingredients and sauces. There is a small dining area but if it's packed just get your muffulletta to go and have a seat in inebof the benches fronting the Mississippi River just across the street.
Ruben Lopez
Loved it. A must try while walking around the French Market area. Great atmosphere with an amazing Muffuletta.
Michael Sargent
The best lunch in New Orleans. Rhe Muffaletta is one of the best Italian Cold cut sandwiches outside of Italy. The official sandwich of New Orleans. A must in the Big Easy.
Riva Madden
Always have to pick up a Muffaltta. Unfortunately Central Markets was closed for renovations. However, the establishment next door was selling the sandwiches for Central.
The cashier was not receptive to questions. She act like you were doing her a favor asking a question.
As long as I got the mufalatta, I was good.

We stopped in for the fabled original muffuletta and ordered a half and split it between the two of us. If you like green olives or salty/briney flavor, you will absolutely love this! We weren't really hungry but had no problem finishing it. The deli had a very historic look to it and was an experience in itself.
Reona
We ordered the muffuletta. Not that great for my liking but my friend said he liked it. The whole sandwich is big enough to share.
Angelica Elsen
Tried the original Muffuletta sandwich at Central Grocery. It was also my first ever Muffuletta and it tasted like a charcuterie board in sandwich form! I love olives, so the flavors of the olive salad took this cold cut sandwich to another level for me!
Kyle Reinfried
4 visits to New Orleans, 4 visits it took me before I stopped at central grocery and had a muffuletta, thank god that's changed cause this sandwich is solid.
I'm from north jersey, land of Italian delis, so when I'm down in the big easy, why would I spend my time money and stomach and something I could find superior at home?
I'm sure I could bring the recipe to a deli up north and they'd make one just as good, but this a New Orleans sandwich, invented at central grocery and I respect origins and the legacy of its creators.
The olive spread is what makes it separate from other Italian combos and the large round roll/bread is a nice to touch for visual and sharing pleasure.
Naomi
I dream of these muffuletta! Perfect meat, cheese, sauce and bread ratio. We returned multiple times during our stay. We will return!
Kristy Rynk
ALWAYS take folks to the Central Grocery for their muffulettas! Have taken people for others, but they say they’re not the same.
My mom and husband crave them, so I’ve had them shipped (Goldbelly). They said the frozen aren’t as good as the fresh, but they’ll take them! LOL!!
Canh Tran
Giant Muffulettas, can taste the distinct layers of cheese, meat, olive oil in the bread and the sesame on top.
Rod Gullo
Great sandwiches. Temporarily closed due to Hurricane Ida damage that caused a brick wall to collapse and take out their roof. It looks like they'll be closed for quite a while given the massive damage to the building. Too bad, we were always impressed by their excellent Muffulletta sandwiches and extremely friendly employees.
Familie Hong
The sandwich was good, but not worth 5 stars. It is very small, but it felt like a part of the experience. They had a good selection of soft drinks. And the service was really well organized. I think they tried their best with the bathroom, but it would benefit from an upgrade.
Krystal B
It was my first time trying a muffuletta and I wasn't disappointed!
The store is set up super confusing. They should split it more.
Btw my picture is a half, I suggest ordering a half to start with.
Rose Perez
Line out the door, WORTH THE WAIT! Muffaletta here is one thing you MUST EXPERIENCE in life. Their olive salad is DELICIOUS.
vivian Liu
Old world remain, over priced sandwich/ Muffuletta ,Italian sesames bread with olive salad and other thing . Recommend Buy some imported salami/ Capocollo was delicious.
Rene' “RENODADDY” Ortiz
Nice small Italian deli/grocer. Great service. Muffeletta really not what it's hyped up to be. It's an Italian deli sandwich that you can get at any Italian deli except for the addition of the olive salad. Not a big fan. But still a nice deli.
Tina Butler
Excellent Muffaletas. My first one and it was very tasty. Purchased a jar of the Italian Olive Salad to make my own when I return to Texas and met a new friend.
Julie Fletcher
Could not wait to visit and try the Muffuletta. It was perfect. The meats and cheeses combined with fresh bread and topped with their own olive salad. Delicious! Had to bring home a jar of the olive salad.
Michelle Costigan
Dear visitors, you won't be disappointed! The line is usually out the door but don't let that keep you from trying. They're super fast at making a really great muffaletta.
Scott Cameron
Got to love a muffaletta sharp and tangy with good meat, cheese, olive salad and bread ratio. Must have in New Orleans. queue is big but goes quick
Buwan N
There is a seating area in the back of the shop. You must try the muffuletta!!! The olive juice is soaked into the bread. I had muffuletta before, but the sandwich here is no match to what I’ve had before.
Rachel
Great muffuletta for around 22 dollars. Lots of great deli meat and cheese with olive salad on Italian food.
Lynzee Villafranca
Obviously a grabbed a muffuletta and it was delicious! Its such a cool shop to browse around and to enjoy the ambiance as you chow down (portions are definitely shareable) on your sandwich.
Dov Szava
Got there early to avoid a lineup, however there was a lineup...Bread delivery guy was late , so I waited about 30 min till about 10:45 am . Got my Muffaleta and was very happy about it ! Tasted Great an Iconic NOLA sandwich !!
Laurie Wagner
THE original Muffeletta! Huge Sicilian and Greek olives and other imported items! A must on our weekend getaway to NOLA! Our football watch party was complete! The line starts to build as soon as it opens, so get there early!
Jennifer Smuniewski
So glad we took a side trip from Biloxi to get these wonderful muffaletta sandwiches! I also had to buy a take home batch of their specialty olive spread
Jeff Behn
*12/13/18 edit* Now that I've tried Muffalettas from 3 different restaurants, I have to say that the sandwich gains a LOT from being heated. That said, based on price and overall flavor, Napoleon House beats CG.
I think CG would be a lot better if they had a way to heat them.
*Original review 12/11/18*
Came to NOLA to experience muffuletta and was not disappointed. The one, the only, the original. Bring your appetite because these babies are HUGE. Better yet, bring a friend and share.
Pascal Theroux
I was a little bit skeptical about muffuletta. But after tasting there's, it was great. And the grocery has a lot of italian importation.
Carmen Laffey
Wonderful huge Muffelata, so tasty. Women order a half of half, AKA a quarter size.
Melissa Davila
Didn't stand in line too long, people weren't to friendly but I wasn't there for the people I was there for their muffalettas and it was great. I purchased a whole one this fed my family of four. I took a friends advice and took it to go waiting till the end of our day to eat it. The olives gave the bread a wonderful flavor after marinating in it. Best I've ever tasted. Too bad service wasn't great.
nalan inanna
this muffuletta is without hesitation the best kind of sandwich i’ve ever had. the store is an experience in itself. must see.
Desi Mora
Too much hype for the cold served muffeleta. Lots of bread and a little meat/cheese filling. Try putting them on a hot griddle with olive oil or butter and that improves the flavor and soften up the bread.
Justin Hill
This place is awesome. If you like a muffuletta, this is the place to go. If they originated them or not, it is worth a stop. I enjoy stopping and getting a sandwich, chips, coke and sitting by the river to eat it.
Angela Cipriano
If your in New'lins you have to save room for a muffuletta, even if it's for the plane ride home. When I arrived there was a line out the door but it moved quickly and I wasn't leaving until I had my muffuletta. There is a counter with some seats but most people were taking their half or full to go.
Armand
Didn't know what to expect and was beyond pleasantly surprised! You have to try this place, the sandwiches here area huge!!! For you health conscience types, this would be a cheat day, but worth it!!!
Pedro Ortiz de Guinea
Muffulettas are a total MUST in New Orleans. Classical place , with a huge variety Of delicious products

When ever we visit New Orlean’s we make a stop once or twice when there. We always get the sandwiches it is amazing!! Can’t wait to go back
J Matthews
The muffalettas at this place are delicious. I find myself craving this sandwich. It's always a place that I stop by when in N.O. .I hope they stay in business for many more years to come.
Jan Freimann
Muffuletta Sandwich was very good.
Tasty Sandwich with the Olive paste, yummy. Price: $12,50 for two pieces (half cut) incl. taxes.
Nathan C
Wow this is so much better than any other muffuletta I’ve ever had! Absolutely delicious!
Brian P
A classic Italian deli, known for the birthplace of the Muffuletta, Central Grocery has a large selection of authentic Italian condiments, meats and pastas. Being The Godfather of Muffuletta, I was a bit disappointed with the overwhelming taste of the Olive Salad. I was hoping for it to be a little closer to the taste of Chicago style gardinera, but the abundance of olives, overpowered the rest of the sandwich. If you go earlier in the day, you’ll have a better chance of stopping in, and getting in and out. We walked by in the mid afternoon and the line was out the door.
Sandy Reil
The best muffaletta sandwich in town. It is huge and can be shared. You order at counter and take it to go. Great to eat along the river or Jackson square. Just grab a few napkins, as it is a deliciously messy sandwich.
Mike Willis
Classic muffulettas! Counter service, friendly staff, limited seating.
Mark Heisel
Home of the famous Muffaletta ! Order a half or whole. It is good. Nice people, fast service, and very clean.
George Wood
Building under repair, the sandwich is served next door though. It was excellent. Worth noting that a full sandwich is huge, probably too big for an average eater in one sitting.
Terry Granade
Great Muffuletta sandwiches. That and a Dixie beer. Sit and watch the horse racing on tv at the sandwich bar. Relaxing and pleasurable, out of the heat and humidity. A favourite in New Orleans
D Lugard
Had to try the famous muffuletta sandwich and read this was the place to go. Quirky old place and tasty sandwich, really enjoyed the pickled veggies in the sandwich.
Ron Piotrowski
CLOSED as of 1/1/2022 due to storm damage. An exterior wall caved in. The store has been emptied. See top of photo. Good luck.
Ghxst1997
So sad it’s still closed but was happy that the liquor store next door is selling the famous muffulettas! I was able to get me one to bring back home to Houston, TX!
Liz Landis
Best Muffulettas in New Orleans! While you're there pick up a jar of the olive salad, it's delicious!
Phaino Aletha
who does not love Central Market? It is the best muffaletta in the universe, so I remember. Super cool still!
Alexandra Dowling
Friendly staff! The muffaletta was good, but served cool instead of hot. Good for a quick bite.
Life With Cats by suntawrites
Everyone says to eat a muffaletta here. And that's not a mistake. You must.
Manuel Colón
Mufalettas are my favorite dish in this city. So, glad to get it from the original location. There sometimes can be a line, but worth the wait.
Sarah Wright
If you know you like a good muffuletta, go here. $20 for a whole sandwich the size of a ciabatta loaf stacked with delicious Italian cold cuts, provolone, and olive salad.
The situation here is no-frills, corner market with counter space toward the back. If it’s too packed, you could always take your sammies out to enjoy outside...unless it’s summertime. Just wait for a seat to open up and stay in that A/C.
Andrew Barton
I build this up in my head for too long, finally make it back and then leave somewhat disappointed. Too little olive salad in my opinion. Get them in, get them out attitude also shows in their sandwich unfortunately.
Becky Holst
Muffuletta was absolutely delicious. I don't like olives, but thought I'd still try it and I am glad I did because it was so good!
lisa calkins
Holy effffff balls, this place has the best sandwich ever. Im speaking as someone who doesn’t really like meat, especially cured meats. But DAYUM. YUM.
Matt Pitchford
I love places of history, especially when they have great food!
Sara Izad
Muffuletta was great but really heavy, quarter of it was enough for one! Great to share. They sell half and full sizes.
Rahim Salhi
A great place to have a quality Muffaletta, I wish I could have it as a warm sandwich
Charles Chen
Must have muffuletta sandwich stop. Bring your appetite because the standard sandwich is about the size of your face. Thankfully they cut it four ways. No wait because they stockpile sandwiches grab n' go style.
Jessica Liang
Delicious muffaletas!! Go early (before noon) because they can sell out pretty quickly. Eat with napkins close by!
Mari T.
Great muffuletta sandwich cut into 4 slices that we shared & tasted great!
Ryan Wedig
Original Muffuletta. Yes. If youre alone get the half as a whole will easily feed two! I love old school family owned joints like this.
Hyunsun C
This is half muffaletta. Bread was good. No sitting inside the store after 4:30pm. Store closes @5pm.
David Ryan
Muffaletta, Muffaletta, Muffaletta, oh how I dream about your Muffaletta. The Muffalettas are so good, can feed an army and it won't break the bank.
Travis Eacona
OMG Their muffulettas are out of this world!!!! Trying one has been on my bucket list for years and I finally checked that off. Can’t wait to go back and have another, and another, and another!!!
TheHomieChris
5 stars for the sandwich. The most simple sandwich but it hits different.
Wilbur Cox Jr
Awesome Muffaletta sandwiches, fast friendly service in a place that's been around since the early 1900's. Been there 100+ years for a reason..not to be missed.
Daniel Gluckman
God bless you for shipping muffuletta sandwiches. I visited a few years ago (and had one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten) and finally pulled the trigger on having one delivered. It’s like I’m back in NOLA. Unreal good. The sandwiches came well packed and it’s still one of the best I’ve ever eaten. You’re doing God’s work. Thank you for being so great.
Paul
Bit of an underwhelming sandwich, maybe it was just overhyped to me. The olive salad inside the sandwich was tasty but the bread is very overpowering
Venkatesh Sivanandam
I never tried a Muffuletta and it was delicious along with some Crystal's hot sauce.
Ben Cool
got a whole muffaletta. Warning: Do not hold the sandwich vertically. I put it in my fridge this way to save it as a snack for later and got a big oil spot in the fridge from the olive oil dripping from the sandwich. Bread was fantastic. Love sesame seeds. Meat and cheese wasn't insane or anything, but provided the base for the olive salad to shine. The bread closed the game with a shutout frame and we're all winners.
Christoph v
Home of the world famous Muffaletta. It’s a must stop spot for anyone new or coming to New Orleans.
Jastian Bastian
Went for the Mufaletta. Loved the sandwich. You have to like green olives and I do. It is worth going for that. The store is full and tight. Counters available to eat at. Garbage cans overflowing. Next time I'll take my Mufaletta outside and eat in the park. I would given it a higher rating if I had done that.
Deniz Mirik
I tried first time it was perfect The Muffaletta!
Mike Chicago
Cool little store. Italian stuff. Need an Italian specialty item? They probably have it here. Reminds me of some little Italian stores in Chicago (where I'm from)
Ali Haeri
True that it's the original, but there are simply many other places in town to get a better muffaletta. Try Cochon Butcher instead.
Hoss
Best Muffuletta I've had. Worth the wait in line. Line moves pretty quickly.
Hez Luciani
Cool little grocery store with many different items. Delicious pre made Muffaletta for fast service. The line moves quickly as a result and you are in and out and on to your next adventure! Staff wasn’t overly friendly but not rude either. Definitely worth a stop if you love the olive mix!
Richard Yaws
We can’t wait for them to reopen. Their muffulettas are a tradition for my wife and I.
Ohad Orpaz
This Muffuletta sandwich is so good! You must come and try!
William Nolan
If you're in the mood to try something Italian with a New Orleans flair added to it, this is where you want to go for a muffaletta!!!! An awesome Italian sandwich with a lot of meat, cheese, and fresh olive salad. You can get either whole or half. But trust me, no matter the size you get, you better have a healthy appetite to tackle one!!!!! They're pricey, but they are really worth it
Jason Johnson
Great one of a kind place to experience NOLA and a great muffaletta!
Susan Campbell
We stopped by around 2 in the afternoon, not busy and no waiting, compare to the long lines at lunch time. We just ordered a whole muffuletta, not sure what the options might have been. I thought it was good, I would have been good with the oil soaking into the bread more, mine was a bit dry. Still enjoyable.
Ryan Dorsett
The home of the Muffuletta! Gotta say for such a simple sandwich it's one of the best I've had. Authentic Italian sandwich experience, from an authentic neighborhood Italian grocery store. Down to earth friendly experience. A must try if you visit New Orleans.
Mike Roberts
I've heard the Muffalettas can be not as fresh as you'd think, but ours was good.
Nice to go to if you are in the area, but not worth a trip to the French Quarter hjust to get one.. Get1/2 of one if you aren't that hungry and want to eat somewhere else later and go eat on the steps facing Jackson Square.
a k
Went twice in our 4 day trip. Yes, the muffaletta is as good as everyone says! The cashier was super friendly as well. DO NOT miss stopping in here. A half sandwich split between 2 people is perfect. Still leaves room to indulge in more delicious food later!
Lori Seaborg
Went to get the famous muffuletta and it was wonderful! The “half” is just over $12 and is HUGE. It was plenty for two of us to split (it comes cut in half). We also picked up a quart of olive salad. The sandwiches are pre-made (but fresh), so even though the line was long, we were helped quickly. So glad this historical place still exists.
Wensday Tumulak
A must in NOLA, gotta get a muffuletta! And a bag of Zapps potato chips!
Talon Windwalker
I've had Muffaletta sandwiches in many places. This place can't be beat. It was SO good! And it's hard standing inside while waiting in line. This place smells so amazing your stomach will be growling.
E. M.
Wished our hotel had a kitchen--because I would have been happy to grocery shop here! Came for the iconic muffaletta: half is plenty for 2 people. Staff were friendly. The stuffed artichoke was a fail, in my opinion: very little to it aside from bread crumbs; not worth the price.
J Em
The muffulettas were phenomenal—we drove 3 hours for a sandwich and it was worth it. Really neat quaint little store in the heart of the French Quarter.
Remember, you’re going for the NOLA experience, so don’t squint too hard at the prices. It’s a lot of meat, and me and my roomie shared half of a sandwich and we were stuffed!
The waitstaff were awesome too!
Nick Campion
Muffuletta was legit. The half is good for 2 people. Pricey but worth it!
George Tassin
Amazing place to split a New Orleans original muffaletta. The staff was amazing and the food was delicious.
Jason Blevins
Haven't been here in several years but I had the chance to stop in yesterday. Got the muffaletta. It was a great sandwich but I can't help but feel like there is less fillings in the sandwich these days and the bread is thicker. Seems like very little meat especially. The bread was good however it was thicker than the amount of meat that was on the sandwich so I felt the insides of the sandwich got drowned out by the bread. Once again still a great sandwich though and I would recommend trying it if you are in the area. But bottom line is I don't think I would actually go out of my way to get this muffaletta over someone else's as I would have back in the day
Frank
Cool piece of history and great muffuletta; however the place does smell like they are making old cheese, which is off putting to some customers.
rachel thomas
Heading to NOLO this weekend for a little getaway,
we were looking forward on stocking up and getting our Muffuletta for the airplane ride back home. Sad to see you're closed, how I was longing for that Muffuletta...So heartbroken. Hope you are able to reopen sometime SOON! 'Till next time...
Thomas Owens
Breaks my heart to see a New Orleans favorite closed because such tyrannical leadership within this government!
When will the madness end? To the mayor, is this power grab worth killing a beautiful city? To the people of NOLA, when did we become sheep? Being lead to slaughter!
Jeff Morrison
Delicious, try the signature sandwich, 1/2 is enough for 2 adults.
Dante Sombra
Birthplace of the muffaletta, sandwiches always good. Lots of great imported items in the shop to buy. I grew up eating muffalettas hot or warm, I wish they at least offered the option to heat them up. If you ask, you'll get a dirty look, so just get it to-go and heat it up at home.
Christopher De la Cruz
Originally from the NY/NJ area and there is an abundant amount of Italian groceries and butcher shops around. Probably the most in the nation. Went to NOLA for the first time and was told to go visit 3 places. Bourbon Street, The Carousel Lounge, and Central Grocery and Deli. Reason being, the so called world famous Muffuletta and Olive Salad. Upon entering, I was welcomed with the wonderful aroma of cured pork, aged cheeses, and locally baked handmade breads. The grocery store has a throwback look to the old Italian grocery stores from yesteryear in NYC. Staff offered "service with a smile." And they were very efficient. They had an assembly line for these Muffuletta sandwiches and Olive Spreads. Really made me wonder what all the fuss was about. Was definitely worth the trip. A delightful combination of texture and taste. And somewhat unique. Check it out!
Valerie Ho
Old style deli/grocery with an eat in area for the pre-made muffeletta sandwiches. Good for a quick bite, delicious sandwiches.
Family Fan
Simple little Italian market with an amazing sandwich. There’s booth seating or you can take it to go and eat by the water. Didn’t think I would like the muffaletta because I never really loved Italian subs but this is somehow different and so much better. The portions are huge and it’s simply delicious. Maybe it’s the olive oil but something about it stands out. Fantastic.
Jeff King
My wife loves muffaleta so this was a must. Staff is very friendly. Sandwiches are huge and you can eat in or take out. Wife totally approved of her sandwich and even bought a jar to take home.
Monique
My first muffuletta & I love it! I've never been big on olives, but decided to try it on my 2nd trip to the Big Easy. The olive relish is awesome with the deli meats and the bread. Central Grocery created the original muffuletta. When we arrived at noon the line was about 20 people long...anymore and the line would be out the door. We ordered a half sandwich to share and it was more than enough for the 2 of us. Nice place to get lots of Italian food items!
Brad
Highly recommend making a stop here. We came here twice and the second time brought the sandwich on the plane home.
K Mac
Love, love, love. First trip back in two years (#thanksCOVID). We always stop by on our way out of town to grab Olive Salad and Muffaletta to go. Just absolutely the best. The market area is great too. Staff were really nice on this recent visit and it felt like home.
Jerry Ryan
Not a hugh selection. A bit like a small town local grocery store, but with a small lunch counter. They claim to be the Home of The Original Muffuletta. The muffulettas are very good and large enough to feed 3-4 people. The staff is very friendly, but plan on a crowd and a long wait time.
Anthony Wagner
Muffuletta & Zapp's potato chips...
Quintessential N'Awlins lunch
Bea Johnson
Muffuletta is a delicious but expensive tradition here in New Orleans. It is worth a try for sure if you're a fan of Italian sandwiches and theirs is one of the best. Personally, I enjoyed mine more after I toasted it, maybe that's sacrilege.
Eric Smith
One of the best muffaletta's in the 'Big Easy'. I have to say my last experience was slightly disappointing as the meat and cheese were a bit light. I hope it was just an off day as I have actually driven to NO specifically for this sandwich. All the other times I have visited Central Grocery it has been great.
M Dillard
Best muffuletta in the world! Ironically the first! Worth visiting this gem in the heart of the French quarters
Walter O'Niell
Great muffalettas! I was pleasantly surprised that there was only a short wait (5 min or so) to pick up a sandwich at the grocery because they were pre-made. The grocery is much the same as it was 50 years ago when my parents took me here as a child.
Zhenay Newhouse
I can only say ITS THE BEST!! They offer next day shipping!!!!!!!! I dont eat olives so the Mufletta is not an option for me BUT everyone who rolls with me loves them!! I have the sandwich and olive spread delivered !!
brandon schwartz
The BEST sandwich you could ever find, a must stop every trip to NOLA!
Robert M
This is the place that made the Muffuletta famous. When I first came here many years ago, the shooting was on barrels around the store. Now there's a seating area in the back, which makes it slightly more comfortable. The sandwich is as delicious as ever! It's a great combination of cheese, sausages, seeded bread, and delicious Olive relish.
Manvitha Gone
The famous Mufuletta! I tried it and thought it was okay, but then I do not prefer cold cut meats or Italian food. I heard people even say that the sandwich tastes like it was made by God himself. Good but not my type of sandwich, also thought it was a little too salty.
Alyssa Carter
Friendly employees and a delicious muffuletta! My husband and I shared a half because if you didn't know, these sandwiches are gigantic. All the the ingredients are absolutely delicious, the bread was great, but in my opinion just a little bit dry. The olive salad was super tasty and really made the sandwich. Cute little shop with bar like seating.
J H
Very nice deli, food was very good and muffalettas a must
Kevin Parmley
The Muffuletta is good, but not worth the price. I'd get it anyways though if you'll most likely only be in New Orleans once. I got the "half size" which is more than enough for a good small sized lunch for 2. They also have a nice selection of Italian meats, cheeses and other things. The owner is very friendly, and the service is quick - especially considering how long the line gets.
Trenton Judson
I had such a positive experience here. The staff were great. The muffuletta is out of this world good. The atmosphere is cozy and they also serve really great bottled sodas. It feels like you are almost going back in time to something simpler and I mean that in a really good way. If you are looking for a lunch spot in New Orleans, this should be on the top of your list.
Noelle Pike
Home of the best sandwich on the planet along with some other amazing and tasty treats. We were blessed to visit during a lull however usually it has a line out the door and down the block this sandwich is so amazing if you have an appetite for olives! Rather than mayo they use this to die for spread that has people travelling from across the globe! This is a must taste to get a true understanding of the New Orleans experience!
J M
Better than advertised. Really enjoyed their muffaletta
alejandro mendoza
Great place, food is fresh and very delicious. I have visited a few times and I have nothing but great things to say about it. Their merchandise is quite unique. This is as close as you can get to buy Italian groceries and some cooked food.
The only thing I have noticed is that their prices have been going up in the past few months. Hopefully once things get better they will go back to regular prices.
Kara Berg
The original Muffaletta sandwich started here. Great variety of products and outstanding sandwiches.
Derek E
Get there hungry their muffuletta is big and heavy but worth it , took the half size and was still stuffed.
KATHRYN A
Believe the hype! it is an amazing sandwich. It is also HUGE (like 12 inches across huge) and loaded full. Store carries a nice selection of authentic Italian products, but the tourists flock here for the Mufulletta. We did come during a lull where there were only 5 or so ahead of us. Line moves very quickly. If you see a line out the door, don't be too discouraged since they are very efficient and the wait will be less than you think. We did get a whole for two people and we could have easily done with a half. Since the room had a fridge we saved the other half for another meal.
Reuben Omelanchuk
Their Mufallata sandwich is absolutely incredible. So good that we bought some before our flight back to Seattle to share some back home. Totally worth it!
A Barnard
A really authentic small Italian grocery. They're famous for inventing the muffaletta sandwich, and there was a big line for people ordering sandwiches. I wish they had a vegetarian version, but I bought the olive salad in a jar and made veggie muffalettas once we got back home.
Teresa Brown
We got the famous Muffaletta sandwich and it was amazing! There was a long line, but it moves really quick and it is so worth the wait. My husband and I split a whole sandwich and it was huge and we ended up taking the rest home. It was so good and fresh. We also bought the olive salad so that we can make it at home. Would highly recommend this place. I have had Muffulattas in a lot of places, but this is the best yet! Will definitely be back when we come back to town! You need to put this on your list as well!
Joellen Williams
The muffuletta is fabulous. Great place to browse and people watch. Don't forget to purchase the olive mix. You can ship to all your friends all over the country.
Palo Alto
The mufuletta was probably the best thing we had to eat on our trip to NOLA . So fresh and the olives take it to the next level. Wish we had gone earlier on our trip.
Maria Lynn Simonetti
Hey! Italian New Yorker over here! Former Chef who trained in Florence, Italy back in 2010 as well. Central Grocery muffulettas are what dreams are made of. I don't believe in a better tasting sandwich than yours! The olive salad, the bread, the salty meats and cheeses. Marone a mi! My husband thinks I'm nuts that I require a couple per trip. Keep doing what you're doing. You guys are the best. See you 8/20-/825 for a couple more. :-D
Danielle Beharie
First time in New Orleans and wanted to try the official Muffaletta. It was delicious as hoped. Don't be turned off by the long line. they are very efficient and the wait is not very long.
There is a small table in the back to enjoy your lunch, it is tight, so just be prepared to rub elbows with your neighbors.
Tater B
Stopped here based on various YouTube videos talking about the Muffuletta. It was not a disappointment! My husband and I shared a half and it was so good. I admit that I was a little worried because I dont normally like olives but I tried it as it is made and I am sure happy I did! We be back for another one before our trip is over. Live the atmosphere and staff. Give it a try!!! You wont be sorry!
Smithson Music (Rob Smith)
This is my favorite place for a muffaletta and I’ve had them at a lot of different places. The problem with many Muffulettas is that the bread is dry but not so here. Everything on the sandwich is perfectly proportional. Buy as many as you can. And then get a beer at Sydneys.
Kevin Fahey
Must, must, must have the Muffuletta sandwich. Don't be afraid, if there is a line, it moves very quickly.
Ralph Davis
Shared a muffaletta sandwich. Interesting Deli hasn't changed since I visited 25 years ago.
Dacoda Hulse
A coworker recommended the muffuletta and I was not disappointed. We went at about 11:30 a.m. and there was no line and they had sandwiches already prepped and ready to walk out the door. The olive salad elevates this simple sandwich and I'll likely end up venturing down to Decatur to snag a jar of it before I fly home.
Dalton
I of course had my first ever Muffuletta here... I cant wait to go get another... they do have them pre made but that's a good thing so the line moves quickly! It was still very good. I normally do not like olives BUT that olive spread was so good! They do at first seem kinda expensive with a half for $11 and a whole for $19.99 but a half is big enough for 2 and the whole one is big enough for 4.
Denise Grisham
The best muffuletta in the French Quarter. My first stop every time I visit.
Ryan Painter
My wife and I stopped in to get the famous muffuletta sandwich. We got a half sandwich, which was the perfect amount for a not too heavy lunch. Price was good and there was seating and a restroom. Will come back next time in New Orleans.
Alan Haraldson
Hi. After thinking about making a trip back to New Orleans I got to thinking about that great muffulettas sandwiches we used to get from central market in New Orleans. Visiting their website I saw that they delivered! Anywhere! Friday I ordered their minimal muffuletta order of 2. About $100 delivered. Well today they came nicely cooled with 3 of those little freezer thingys. Nicely boxed in a super insulting double walled bag. We could not wait to try them. Wow, just as I remember them but much bigger. About 12 inches in diameter. We can’t eat them that fast so 1 will have to be cut up in single serving packages and frozen. This is the greatest sandwich ever. It’s been 25 years since we have been to New Orleans and now I have brought New Orleans to vegas. Yep, the sandwich’s arrived perfect!
David Young
Crazy busy with tourists, but the line for muffalettas moves fast. They pre-make the sandwiches in the morning so they are stacked up and ready to go on the counter wrapped in paper. That is just enough time for the oil to soak into the delicious bread without making it soggy. Great ingredients make for a world class sandwich. Don't miss it!
Morgan Jackson
Best. Muffuletta. It will have you coming back on every single trip!
Madison Hurley
Highly recommend Central Grocery! The Muffaletta did not disappoint. The line was long but moved very quickly! Inexpensive & delicious lunch. My husband & I split a half sandwich for $12 & it was more than enough food!
Sherry Jordan
Yum! We really enjoyed our muffletos. Great place for a great lunch/dinner. Lots of delicious Italian treats and pantry staples.
Amy Baker
The absolute best Muffaletta Bread I have ever had! We were all surprised after one little bite. How do they do that?! So great that we had to buy extra bread and take it back to the hotel with us :)
Michael Long
WOW, 40+ years later and those muffulettas are still the best.
We just snacked this time and forgot to bring back the olive tapenade .... LMAO the Rouse's in Diamondhead MS had it... for a dollar cheaper!!!
Love this place, it's actually a good Italian grocery also. I've bought some dinner staples there also when I lived in Uptown NOLA.
Janet Hamm
We love this place! We bought a muffuletta and some seeds to plant. The smell is amazing in there! The sandwich was delicious and there's only one other place that makes them a little better. But of course, we'll buy another one when we go back.
L Thosy
One of the best Muffalettas in the French Quarter. They used to put on more Olive Salad & if they still did, I'd have rated it a 5 Star. Often a line up, but worth the wait.
Great selection of just about anything you can imagine might be in an Italian style store/deli, including wine.
Brian Stephens
Worth the wait when there is a line out the door. A must try when you are there.
Sandra Slaughter
I don't usually care for cold sandwiches, but oh my goodness! The Mufaletta was awesome! It was a quaint little grocery store with a table and chairs in the back. Well worth the wait.
Kyle Shamie
Get the original New Orleans muffaleta here! This is the place that started it all! Long lines during prime meal times, but the line moves quickly. The sandwich is on a big round loaf of bread so the half sandwich option was enough for two of us to split and not be in a food coma. This sandwich was delicious, will go back the next time I'm back in town!
Rachel Gullett
My husband and I split a muffuleta sandwich and it was delicious. Especially after a night of drinking.
Mark LaValle
The Best hands down!!!! Simply Delicious
Libby Derenthal
Muffuletta!! They are huge! My suggestion is to take it out to eat as seating is limited and awkward.
Heather
Always stop in and grab a muffaletta on the way out of town to bring back home with me. Great way to extend the experience of New Orleans great food after I'm back home. Also get yourself some amazing seasonings so you can try to make some Creole dishes yourself!
Samir Qadir
Very good sandwiches at a local deli setting. Half a muffaletta is usually more than enough for me. There's a small counter if you want to sit down in the store, otherwise walk out to beautiful Jackson Square and enjoy your food in the park!
Rachel Moody
I ran into a local New Orleans resident at a bar in Chicago (what are the odds!!) before our trip down and they recommended Central Grocery and Deli for the best Muffuletta in town. He wasn't wrong! Best sandwich I've had in a long time. We should have gone more than once, but that just leaves it on our list to visit again! We got the half order and boy was it huge! I can't imagine what the full size looks like! Check this place out, and don't forget to get the Muffuletta, you won't be disappointed!
Mike Mcclellan
This place is awesome. Every time im in town i have to stop and get a sandwich. It is a special treat every time. I've never had a bad experience here. It is my favorite place in New Orleans!
Patrick Ramsey
Went here to get the original Muffuletta and it did not disappoint! Sandwich is fantastic and service while in the deli was outstanding! Can’t wait to be back in New Orleans to get another sandwich or two.
Leanna Zoeller
Delicious. The olive dressing is like nothing I've had before. I loved it. Tangy.
A Laz
This was my first time to visit New Orleans, and my friend, who is a local, showed me this place as one of her favorites. I was not disappointed! Walking through the doors and instantly I was wide eyed and open mouthed at the interior. It was a travel back in time to me; a time of my parents and grandparents. After I was normalized to the environment, my friend ordered a half muffalatta(?) which we shared. Oh! My! Goodness! It was simple but delicious. I so look forward to returning here upon future visits.
Brian Dreckshage
Do you love muffaletta sandwiches? Then you have to come here for a great one. Best to go a bit after lunch hour...then you can grab a cold drink, some chips and sit down and enjoy your sandwich. Grab some to go as well...they will stay fresh for days in their wrapper.
Helen Gaffney
Really cool old-timey grocery store! The Muffaletta sandwiches were delicious and shouldn't be missed. The portion sizes are generous, so if you are not big on portions it is wise to order a half (the full sandwich is enough for four people in my opinion)!
Beverly Moore
Locals recommended we try the muffaletta sandwich at Central Grocery & Deli. We did and WOW, hands down it is by far one of the best muffaletta sandwiches we've ever tasted. We bought a whole sandwich which normally is cut in half and had it quartered for the 3 of us to share. This was some serious eats! The deli itself is quaint and the owner/workers are very friendly
Jonathan
Outstanding Muffeletta! Highly recommend getting one here if you want the real deal. Been in New Orleans for many years and finally tried one here. I've had the rest and can safely say this is the best. Fast service and fresh product. The sandwich is a littke on the high side, but I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". Their quality is worth every penny and you're in and out of the line in no time flat.
Ryan M
This is a cute little store that you can find all kinds of spices and foods that will be hard to find anywhere else. They have these sandwiches that, while I personally didn't find too amazing since I absolutely hate olives, you will probably love if you do like them. The fact that I found it to be even edible with how much I dislike olives says a lot to how good it must be to someone who does like them. It's worth quickly dropping by in your in the area, though, even if you really like olives there are probably better places to eat in the French quarter.
D Day o' reckoning
The muffuletta is very good. The wife really liked it. To me, the bread is not as good as I remember. The sandwiches are pre-prepared but in fairness they are behind the counter preparing them. Make sure you do go here, the place is very interesting. We have to come every time we come to New Orleans.
Uyen Bui
Came here after seeing lots of good reviews and a must-go place in New Orleans. The line was long but moving fast. We ordered half of Muffuletta. The sandwich had salami, ham, cheese, olive salad. Even though I was not a fan of the sandwich, my brother-in-law and sister really enjoyed. We ended up buying another one before leaving New Orleans.
Kylie Schreiber
Loved it! I was visiting the city for work and on my own, so naturally I looked for a good lunch spot and found this gem. I ordered half of the muffuletta and it was still too much for one sitting. I really appreciated the obvious history and dedication to making everyone’s experience great. A must visit/try if you are visiting!
Donna Caltagirone
The best Muffaletta around. Hard to find ingredients for native Italians that immigrate here. Brought 2 cans of anchovy sauce home for our Zia. I highly recommend going here. But if you try another place that makes Muffaletta's you will be disappointed because this place is the Best
shawn day
Must go when in New Orleans. the mufuletta is an epic sandwich, so good we got one for the ride home. The smell when walking into the store makes one instantly hungry. Great old time Italian grocer experience.
Molly
As good as ever. I've been dreaming about their muffaleta for a long time and it did not disappoint. A "not to be missed" taste of New Orleans. Hubby and I shared a half. Loaded with meat and cheese. So good.
Holly Tucker
Of course you have to get the muffaletta, and yes it's totally worth the hype. Lots of great little goodies to pick up as well. Got a bottle of pepper sauce, hot giardiniera & spicy olive salad
Guy Guy
!!!!!MUFFULETTA!!!!!! Hands down best sandwich I have ever eaten, stop back in before we left and grabbed two muffuletta whole muffuletta's to go. Highly recommended stopping in and getting yourself one.
Ainmhithe
Came for the Muffuletta. Absolutely delicious. Nice selection of traditional Italian cooking ingredients as well. It is only bar seating though, no sit down tables. And the muffuletta was on the more expensive side of $13 for a half sandwich but it was delicious.
Marcos Batan
The muffuleta was outstanding. Definitely worth having when visiting NOLA.
Shari Cobb
I ordered the Muffulettas through Goldbelly, since I can’t find any this good in the Los Angeles, CA area. I ordered them during the quarantine and shared with my friends. We all think these are the best! Now I’m ordering again, with a larger order. When the quarantine is over, I’m hoping to visit in person.
Nicolas Suarez
Best Mufalata anywhere! I've been going here when in NOLA since 1982. Worth every penny. Get some Crawtators to go with it. Highly recommend!
richard owen
I love Central Grocery the atmosphere is extraordinary the sandwiches are the best I've ever had I've never had a sandwich better than that and I love to make a trip to New Orleans just to get one of those sandwiches and I'm 45 miles away and it's worth it
Scott Alberry
Would have given it 5 Stars except for the wait and not having enough olive salad on the muffaletta. Will be back!
Steph Rice
Totally worth the price. My son and I split half of a Muffalleta and it was more than enough. By the way that's the only sandwich they make and they do it right. The sesame bread, the meat and the olive salad...YUM. my son said it was the best sandwich he's ever had.
Michelle King
If you like mufalettas, this is the place to go! So good! I bought a jar of their spicy olive relish. Can't wait to try it!
Dustin
I've had this place on my bucket list since I was a kid. AMAZING! Loved the atmosphere, history and of course the muffaletta!!! The olive spread is good stuff. Now, let's be honest, it's not the most amazing sammich ever, but the history behind it makes it tastier.
Nigel Armstrong
Absolutely great! The muffaletta is simple amazing. Its such a unique sandwich you have to try. The simple ordering is nice, just walk up to the counter and ask for a "half" or a "whole", there's nothing else to it.
Jazmyn N
The muffuletta is definitely a must and I'm happy I made time to try it my first time in NOLA. The olive spread was a pure delight!
Selene
This place reminds me of all those tiny Sicilian grocery stores back home in MA. The whole muffuletta was enormous, enough that I split it with my boyfriend, and absolutely delicious. I probably would have gone a bit nuts on the cheese and salami if he hadn't pulled me away. Definitely a must to go here!
Kevin Hood
My first time in New Orleans with my girlfriend. We stopped by Central Grocery around lunch time on a Tuesday. We ordered a whole Muffulletta with two bottled waters which came to $24 and some change. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. We grabbed a seat at the back of the deli and ate our lunch.
The sandwich was delicious! We've never had a muffuletta before. The olive spread is very tastey. Also, the sandwich is HUGE! We only ate half and brought the other half back to the hotel. This place reminds me of the mom and pop Italian delicatessens back home in New York.
Fair warning it is a rather salty sandwich. It made me a little extra thirsty. I ended up buying another water.
Jared Lyons
I've lived an hour away from New Orleans my whole life but never went to Central Grocery for lunch. I regret not going sooner. I've had a muffaletta from here before and I remember it being good, but the whole experience of eating in the back of the deli, can coke from the coke machine, and the fresh sandwich was really fantastic.
I will do this again the next time I have a day off during the week.
Stuart Morrell
Stopped in for an Original Muffaletta (where they were invented) and was very happy we did. Great breat, loads of meat and cheese and a wonderful olive dressing. Go before or after the afternoon rush and the wait isn't so bad!
Jonah Kowall
The original muffaletta, these are amazing sandwiches. This is the original, which means they keep it pure. I think the hotter version are better. They are huge if you get a whole one, definitely for two people. These used to be more full and better in general, also the bread is sometimes a bit stale which isn't ideal. There are better spots now.
Natalie Ladd
The muffaletta is massive! The store has an old school Italian store vibe. You order at the counter (friendly staff) then can eat your food at counters in the back. They have public restrooms so you can wash your hands and regroup after eating the delicious muffaletta. Water was also reasonably priced. Worth the stop!
Bryan Hirzel
Best muffuletta I've ever had hands down!! Staff was awesome, smells are ever better! Great market to pick things up in while you eat and not priced out of this world.
Third Phone
If you have never had a muffelata you need to put this place on your to-do list! They are huge! Also a store where you can buy olive salad and other yummy local favorites to take home.
Reina Hanson
We were encouraged to visit for the muffalettas, and we were so glad we did! The bread was amazing, and the olive salad gives it such an interesting flavor. Delicious!
Matthew Duhon
Best muffulettas I've ever had. You can get in and get your food quick and easy. I stop by once a year when I'm in town. Staff not always super friendly and they seldom have hot sauce available to folks eating in. They sell hot sauce so do me a favor and buy one and leave it for the next weary traveler. Not a lot of space so I would not come in a big crowd of you plan to stay. Luckily a lot of places available in the French Quarter out side to eat if needed.
Raul Fuster (Fus75)
A must stop for a muffuletta every time I'm downtown. A landmark of the New Orleans culinary scene.
If you find yourself in the quarter go in and have lunch, you will never see a sandwich the same way again.
Tracy Ambrose
Wow!! What a selection of groceries here. The Muffaletta Sandwich was really good, I just got a half, cause wow it was a lot of sandwich. Missed this place last time we were here, but definitely would go back for another one. I took a business card home with me so I can replenish my olive spread in the future.
Aila Enos
Went here for the famous muffaletta (it was the only place we went for muffuletta in New Orleans so can't really compare to anything). The line went by pretty quickly but you may want to stake out some seats when in line because there isn't much seating in the restaurant. NOTE: They are huge! I was with another person and we got a whole to split.. wish we would have gotten a half a sandwich.
James Kwok
You're most likely coming here for the muffuletta, a glorious samesies stacked high with meat and the signature olive dressing. The sandwich itself comes quartered, and people will line up before opening for one of these - be careful of the lunch rush, but it's worth the wait! Good variety of souvenir food items in addition to being a well stocked market and deli.
Skye
This is a must go to when going to the French Quarter. You walk in and your mouth just waters with all the beautiful smells and then you get the Mufaletta and BAM you're in love and want more so GET MORE it's worth every penny
Matt in Mississippi
Stopped in for a muffaletta, got a whole to go. So good!
BradandMichelle Morgan
Don't miss grabbing a Muffaletta at Central Grocery and Deli on your visit to NOLA! In addition to unique grocery finds and staples for your own Cajun recipes, you might be able to score a souvenir or two. The deli is quick at making the muffalettas; and they're filling and the price is great!
Michelle Briggs
You must visit here and try the famous muffaletta. It's a New Orleans experience like no other. So amazing.. can't wait to go back.
Chuck Rogers
This was my first time to eat here, in the hundreds of times I’ve been to New Orleans. This place has the best muffuletta I have ever eaten. We want to try he original muffuletta, and we weren’t disappointed, I will always come here from now on.
Eff Dee
Got the muffaletta. Was delicious. Very sally on account of the olive salad and ages salami. Tasted great. Also bought a large jar of the olive salad to take home with me. Cool little Grocery with a bunch of odds and ends that might be rare for some people. We're from Pittsburgh so we have 15-20 spots like this...they don't have muffalettas though!
Make sure you come in early if you want a Muffaletta. They sell out early. The manager dude saw us in line and asked what we wanted, we told him. He told me it was a 50/50 shot and I was the last guest in line that got one. So he was spot on.
Francisco Rojas
The muffuletta sandwich is awesome. Quick bite that you can share with another person to and keep going on your exploration of NOLA.
Robert Snapp
This is the place to enjoy the original muffaletta sandwich. Many other grocery items are available not normally found in a grocery store. I went there to purchase a muffaletta and sat down in the eating area. It was nice talking with other tourists. The sandwich was huge and delicious, I recommend ordering a half sandwich which is more than enough for two people.
Summer Fields Hayda
The muffuletta was invented there and it is life changing. It’s unique from the olive salad made there. You’ll hear about long lines but we stopped by twice and barely waited five minutes! We went slightly after lunch hour. Depends on when you go. The grocery is a trip- a blend of Cajun and Italian fare.
Shawn Ross
Muffuletta! Need not say any more. Just amazing!
No One
Never will I have a better Muffuletta. Looking forward to the challenge of trying to make it at home.
Jack McDaniel
I got a Muffuletta, full sized, and split it with my family. One of the best tasting sandwiches I have ever put in my mouth. Although it is not heated, it has a unique and delicious taste.
Lora Hopper
The muffuletta was so good! We came on a food tour and were given about 1/8th, which is like 1/2 a regular sandwich.
Sandra Lynsdale
Very good muffuletta sandwich. It was our first time to try it, and we heard that this place was the original. It did not disappoint, absolutely delicious. We found the half sandwich was more than enough to be shared between two people.
Anthony Siciliano
One of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever had. Highly recommend the prosciutto. Staff was extremely friendly and personable. Felt like I was back home. Definitely worth the visit.
Michael Gregory
Must for any visit to New Orleans. Muffuletta is the best anywhere.
Jason Tyson (JasonT)
Best muffuletta I have ever eaten.
Joshua Davis
A must stop before leaving New Orleans. I repeat, before leaving New Orleans. This is not a sandwich to be eaten lightly and is best enjoyed once it has aged a day or two. The oil in the olive salad, the sweat from the cheese, the fat from the cured meat all has a chance to soak into the bread and that my friend, the sandwich makes. Pay no heed to the travel videos or seated patrons who eat it fresh, you now have the secret. Or try a slice there and take the rest home, trust me.
Michael Allsop
We had to come and try the muffaletta sandwich. We were lucky they only had a one left and we got it. Went to Jackson park to sit down and eat and it was great. We brought a bottle of their mix home with us.
Laura I
Home of the original Muffaletta sandwhich. The reason why people come here. A must stop if you come to New Orleans.
Melissa madere
Absolutely best Muffaletta in the city! For $18 you can get a whole muffaletta filled with meats and cheeses and olive salad. They don't skimp on any of it.. Keep in mind that they close at 5pm though and that on weekends there may be a line. It IS worth it though , and t moves fast! We always get ours to go, the seating area is not at all very large.
Sean Motise
Love this place. I always go here to get a great sandwich. You should too.
Kevin Sun
Good Muffuletta never try it before!
Elliott B.
Delicious muffuletta sandwiches. Great with some Zapps chips and a beverage while watching the Mississippi. Take home and great heated in oven too. So good.
Jack Cox
Worth a stop to try the original famous Muffletta. Some places have made this sandwich larger and more extreme but not necessarily better. A half order will feed a single person to the point of discomfort. Personally the grocery is nice as well with reasonable prices.
Jerri Ledford
Best muffuletta you could ever hope to have!
Togo Toons
Stopped here for a quick visit when walking around the French Quarter. This place checks all of the boxes and is a must visit whether or not you are Italian! The smells alone are worth the stop; let alone the Muffulettas! Places like these do not stay around as long as these folks have by accident.
joseph mathew
The Central Grocery is the birthplace of the Muffuletta sandwich. This place looks like time stood still and the honest to goodness quality of their olive salad, that they also sell in jars, which give the Famous Muffuletta it acidity that superbly balances the fatty richness of the Italian coldcuts. They are available in quarter, half and full sandwiches. I bought a full sandwich and it was massive and very satisfying. The meats are full of smokey flavour, the bread is soft and fresh, the olive salad is tart and flavourfull.
Gregory Sgarro
A must for a Muffaletta staff are great local spot good vibe
Matthew Windsor
You, and everyone else in line, are here for the muffuletta sandwich. Unlike some other touristy spots in the Quarter, this place still delivers on the hype. The olive spread is fresh and the Italian meats are just spicy enough. If I have one complaint it's that the sandwich is a little on the greasy side, but that's probably authentic.
Jim Dougherty
Besides the main reason most people go here, there is an Italian market here! If I lived here, this would be my go to place to get Italian (and some non-Italian) staples for my pantry. Sardines, anchovies, canned tomatoes, colatura, you name it. Oh yeah, they also make one heck of a sandwich. The muffaletta was probably one of the best I had in this city. The other one I enjoyed was a warmed one at another location, but this one was so good as well. Four hungry guys devoured one as a prelude to dinner. Don't tell the wives and girlfriends.
Walt Albright
Great muffaletta. On our last day in NOLA, we just had to have Central Market's famous muffaletta. The best.
Samantha Martin
When in New Orleans we wanted to be sure to try all the local food. This is THE place to get a muffuletta!! This place is not fancy by any means, but the sandwiches are delicious! A whole one is HUGE, more than enough to share plus some. Even a half one is big enough to share for lunch! If you are in New Orleans and want to try a muffuletta, don't go anywhere else!
mibngold
The Muffaletta...
Enough said !
The absolute best...
alex silva
Really good sandwich the only thing that it killed it for me was the olives
Joe Darden
Best Muffuletta on the planet.
Service is fast, fun and friendly.
They are set up to move through lines quickly, so come prepared and don’t be that guy/gal that holds up the line because you don’t know what you want.
Karl Sodergren
It's a small hole in the wall quaint place and a bit like stepping back in time. I haven't been there in years and forgot how good the Muffuletta is (the olive salad is da bomb). We ordered a whole sandwich which came quartered and fed our family of four plus bottle drinks for about $28. Just order at the counter and carry your food to the back of store where there is counter space for eating. The staff was friendly and your fellow patrons are in a festive mood bcaz it's New Orleans. Bath room is tiny and awkward but clean. Please help them keep it that way (clean not awkward, lol). Please hit the like button for this review and enjoy Central Grocery.
Melissa
Ordered the half muffuletta sandwich for $10.50. There was a perfect balance of the meat, cheese, olive mix and bread. I don't normally like olives but the balance was perfect and the flavors meshed really well. The half size would definitely be enough for one person or to share with somebody as large snack.
Lorna Lucarino
A small deli with The BEST Muffuletta sandwich. Had it cut in 4, & we each were full after 1 piece. Perfection!
J Hsu
A bit disappointed things aren't made fresh on request but it actually makes sense. I ordered a half muffaleta and the lady grabs a prepackaged to go order. I guess by making them ahead, it gives the longest for the flavors to meld together. Enjoyable sesame seeds sprinkled on the bun as odd as that may be.
Ken Kolar
Gotta stop in for a muffuletta sandwich & maybe one to go as well
Javier Kohen
This shop looks great for getting Italian groceries and deli meat. Got a muffaletta here (they claim to have invented it), and it was OK: the flavor of the several meats and cheeses were indistinguishable. Very long line, not sure it was worth it; my friend got a muffaletta at the airport for the same price and we thought it was better.
Jill Easton
Muffalettas (A big round bun with Italian luncheon meats and olive salad.) were created here in 1906. A half muffalata and a drink makes lunch for two. They have a variety of Italian cheeses and other regular food items.
colbyfront
I love this place!...for its history, the experience of eating at the place that created muffulettas, and for the variety of foods and spices they have in the store. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is because the dine-in area only has about 16 seats, so it's extremely cramped. I say that with hesitation, because it's one of the things that makes the experience so unique...if they changed it and added space, it just wouldn't be the same...but I wanted to mention it because it IS a little uncomfortable. The other reason I didn't give it five stars, is because the line can sometimes be quite long (although, worth the wait). I recommend that everyone try this place at least once...it's absolutely worth the experience and the food.
Mitch Alton
This is the home of the muffaletta sandwich, which is not for everyone. If you don't like olives/pickled vegetables, you probably won't like this sandwich. If you do though, this is the best (tbh only) place to get this sandwich while in NOLA. A quarter of a sandwich (they are sold in halves and wholes) is an appropriate amount for one person. You can eat your sandwich in the back half of the store on bar-like tables and stools or just get it to go. They also have a wide variety of canned seafood items which can be hard to find elsewhere.
Tiffany Braman
We visit New Orleans once a year and this place is on our must visit list. We pick up muffaletta for our last New Orleans meal and savor every last bite. They travel well - just gives more time for the flavors to all meld into the bread. Pick up a bottle of olive salad so you can try to recreate at home. It won't be the same, but the olive salad is tasty!
Jerrod Brown
I don't even like olives but the Muffaletta is delicious!!!!
Jeff Bredt
One thing there is no shortage of in NO are muffalettas. And I, unfortunately, found out the hard way that they are not all created equally. Save your money, don't waste your time eating muffalettas anywhere else. This place has what you are looking for, what you've read about, what you've heard what a muffaletta can be!
SDottie
mmmmhhhh mmmmhhh mmmhhhh This is the best review to give this. We ordered the Original Muffuletta. Aaaahhhmazing, my daughter n I just yummed with every bit! Cream soda with good old fashioned cane sugar. The chopped gardinier is so delicious. Tiny little shop well worth it.
Paul Roberts
Lots of interesting food to buy, and the Muffulettas are fantastic!
Sam Nuss
They sell the original muffuletta. There was a rather large line there when we got there but it only took us 20 minutes to get our food. It's very reasonably priced. The muffuletta was absolutely delicious. The store is very old and has lots of interesting things to look at while you wait. While there isn't much seating in the actual store, there's lots of public seating nearby.
Daniel Pango
When you walk in , it feels like you’re in a movie set, not as a bad thing, as of you don’t see this kind of place like never. Very simple place, there is a line to do both grocery and ordering their famous muffuletta “which was amazing!” And price isn’t bad. One good suggestion, if you’re alone, you probably need only a quarter, so if you order a half sandwich, you’ll be more than fine.
Nicole Scimone
This sandwich shop is a destination. It doesn't look like much but the Muffaletta sandwiches are amazing. I cannot replicate these at home; they are really that good.
I'd suggest buying an extra sandwich and keeping it a day or two in the fridge. This one actually gets better w age because all the olive flavors seep into the bread fully.
Finally, I'd suggest to go early 11 instead of 11:30 or 12. Tourists in New Orleans are still sipping cafe au kait and eating beignets across the street at that time, and you can whisk in and out of Central grocery in minutes! Line picks up considerably at peak lunch times.
It's not super wheelchair accessible. We popped the chair up over a little step and the aisles were a bit narrow. Still we were treated well and had no issues.
Steph S.
I came here from a recommendation from a friend who visited a while back. Worth every penny I spent in here. The muffaletta was amazingly delicious and I couldn't get enough of it! I even bought some of their olive salad to take home with me and attempt to replicate it!
Dennis Byars
Such an amazing sandwich. Now I understand why everyone who goes there raves about it.
Amy
Always a great place for a muffaletta well worth the wait. Just remember they are enormous and you can buy a half, share it and still be stuffed. They are available with just cheese and the olive salad is delicious and worth to buy in the jar.
Tracy Foreman
I have never heard of a muffuletta sandwich but I was told this was another must while in New Orleans. OMG!! This was so damn delicious. It's literally a grocery store that also has a deli and serves sandwiches. Not too much since for dining in but pull up a bar stool to the high top table and five in.
This sandwich is loaded with meat, cheese, olives, fabulous bread and it is greasy! Grab a ton of napkins.
If you don’t like olives, this is NOT the sandwich for you. It’s delicious, rich in olive taste and very oily.
Add this to the list of where to eat in NOLA
Vincent Sartor
The line moves really fast since they are mainly only selling the 1 sandwich. It was tasty, but I would have preferred some better bread. The olive spread dominated the flavors of the meat and cheese on the sandwich. Very salty!
The store is full of items you don't see in your normal grocery store, and the building definitely has a history.
Ann Katzenmeyer
I went here as a child with my mother and brother to get a muffuletta, it is the BEST muffuletta I have ever tasted and its big do you have left overs. It is worth the price and I promise you won't regret it.
Nadine Nelson
The place to get a superb mufelletta along with spices this gourmet grocery was one of my favorite places to stop and peruse like a museum. Wonderful place to get a sandwich and go sit outside or by the water. Fantastic place to get spices, beignet mix, and other edible treats that sing New Orleans and inexpensive yet thoughtful and useful gift.
Eric Wilks
Got there at 11:00 AM on a Saturday. There was no wait. The muffuletta was as great as I had heard. At 12:00 the line was out the door and down the block. If you don't like standing in line get there at 11. If you do, however, go at noon. I am sure the sandwiches will be just as good.
Troy Collins
I have been buying the Muffuletta sandwich here for close to thirty years. I bought to sandwiches yesterday and was disappointed. They seem to have changed the bread or maybe less olive salad. Not sure what has changed but it is not as good as used to be. Sad, it was something I always went to New Orleans to get. The price has gotten more than the sandwich is worth.
Michael Magnus
The muffuletta at Central Grocery came highly recommended by several friends, and for good reason! This massive sandwich comfortably fed 4 people a light lunch for about $20. Quite tasty, but a little pricey for what you get.
Albert Nurick
Central Grocery is the real deal. It's the place that invented the Muffuletta, the delicious cold sandwich with great Italian meats and cheeses slathered with the housemade olive spread. Yes, there are many imitators who try to make a muffuletta, but Central Grocery's is the original, and the very best.
It's a must stop on every visit we make. Line can be long, but it moves fast, and the wait is worth it. 1/4 of a muffuletta makes a good meal, a whole one will keep you happy all weekend.
Carrie Mueller
So yummy! I split a half with a loved-one & it was the perfect lunch. We went around 1 pm and there was no line. The guy behind the counter was a little gruff, but it was all part of the charm. Luckily, we found 2 seats at the counter. We took another half home for dinner!
Kate Hansen
This is one of the first places I go when I'm in NOLA. The muffelatta is incredible!
Jeremiah Floyd
The Muffuletta is without a doubt one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. Quick service. In and out super quick on a Monday.
Nancy Coleman
Get the muffaletta!
Central Grocery is one of the originators of this incredible New Orleans delicacy. You're thinking, "It's a sandwich, I've had sandwiches in my life, I'll pass."
That's what I thought the first time we were in NOLA, and we waited until the day before we left to come here. The muffaletta is so incredible that we brought one home. We took the train, and that sandwich didn't even make it out of Louisiana.
I have since craved it; there is really nothing comparable to the Central Grocery version IMHO. It is about $20 for a whole sandwich, which is hugely gigantic. One can easily feed two hungry people, and you may have some left over.
It is made of lunch meat, cheese and olive salad which defies description. The round bread is home-made and yummy. This is definitely not a healthy food but it is so good!
Marc Abplanalp
The mufuletta lives up to the hype. Dense, chewy bread, flavorful meats and cheeses, and delightful olive giardiniera. Parking is a pain, the walk from the car is hot as hell, there are 50 million people everywhere, but still very much worth the effort.
Wayne Campbell
Got there right after 3 pm on a Sunday. No line no waiting. Got the last whole muffaletta they had. Eating it now. So delicious it's worth making my phone all oily writing this review. Nom nom nom
Ho Le
Muffelletas are a very unique type of sandwich which aren't often easily found. Central Grocery is the birthplace of the Muffelleta, and this is one of the best I've ever had. The store is small, and the line can snake out the door during peak hours, but it's worth the wait. The sandwich itself is HUGE! Make sure you know what you are getting before you decide to get a whole/half sandwich. Grab a seat in the back, or better yet, take it outside and eat on a park bench.
Jennifer P.
Delicious muffelatas at a reasonable price! They've been around for a long time and they are just as good as they used to be. I highly recommend going there!
Karmel Karma
My experience is, NEVER, EVER, try a Muffalata anywhere else! In general, I don't eat salami sandwiches but I had heard so much about it I decided to try it.
It was one of the best sandwiches I ever tasted. I've been to New Orleans a few times when they are closed and tried other places and I might as well have gone to the dollar store to buy the meat, cheese and bread.
These are a must try! just don't expect the same quality any place else.
C A
There was a line here, but it moved quickly.
All we wanted was a muffuletta that we could
split, and they had them ready for take-out.
The food was very good.
Jason Lortie
The only place to get a perfect muffuletta. Worth any type of wait. If you enjoy it, pick up a jar of the olive salad so you can enjoy the flavors back home!
Lisa Bailey
Mmmm, muffuletta. Very large and delicious sandwich. You can split a half sandwich with someone and still be full. Hours are 9am to 5pm I believe, so great place to grab a quick lunch and walk somewhere quiet for a picnic.
Bill Key
Best sandwich I've had maybe ever
Da Greek
You only come here for one thing, and one thing only, though Muffaletta. The original one. Go early in the day because they usually sell out. One is enough for two people. Don’t forget to get a Barq’s root beer while you are chowing down your Muffaletta. It is a true authentic New Orleans experience. A mix of the New Orleans, with the Italian, and with everything else in it.
Andy Frazier
My wife wanted a Central Grocery Muffuletta so badly that we decided to make a road trip from Atlanta to New Orleans. It was well worth the drive. We stopped in twice over the weekend. Even if there is a line out the door you will not have to wait very long. Along with their famous Muffulettas, they have a wide variety of traditional Mediterranean and Cajun/Creole groceries that you would have a hard time finding at a traditional grocery store. No trip to New Orleans would be complete without a visit to Central Grocery. 5 stars!

Muffuletta sandwich in New Orleans? This is the place. Pair it with a cold Barq's root beer and you're there. The grocery has Italian and Mediterranean specialties that are too numerous to mention. Good place to visit in the city.

Best mufalettas around! Still under original ownership!!

My review only concerns the Muffuletta. Honestly, it was a dissapointment. Not because it was bad but it really was nothing special and a little pricey for what you get. The olive salad inside was very good though.

They invented the word muffelatta. It's from the combination of muffe (meaning Muffet Q. Pennington the 3rd) and latta (meaning whole lotta shaking going on). With these twin powers activated - they make a sandwich; but let's be honest, all words when combined make sandwiches. ALL WORDS!?!

Neat place, and the muffaletta is indeed all it's cracked up to be!

If ever in Nawleans, I never leave before going to the Central Grocery for their specialty Muffalata sandwich! Made to order and cut to your eating ability I eat the whole sandwich and can then barley swallow even a drink of a soda!😅 …

You will never find a better Muffuletta. Central Grocery is a true New Orleans experience, that you must do. I have been coming here for over 30 years and it’s always been great!!

Best lunch in the French Quarter for a good price. They only have one sandwich: the muffaleta. It's fantastic. I usually hate olives but I ate every bite of that sandwich.

It's huge, and tasty, and they know it to be charging $18 (and that was two years ago). Worth the splurge though since we only get to NOLA every few years. It fed four not terribly hungry adults who knew they'd be stopping for beignets a little later.

It would be 5 stars, but they were out of muffaletta bread, so no world-famous muffaletta for me. Wanted just the insides, since i avoid bread, but was told "that's not gonna happen." Huh! Ok. Got a stuffed artichoke to die for instead. Great place with great selection of cool, eclectic, old-fashioned groceries and delicious ready-to-eat food, plus a seating area that closed 2 mins before i walked in.

Home of the "Original" Muffuletta sandwich. Olde world atmosphere, lots of imported foods to purchase. The sandwich is a "Classic" , yes many others offer the same named sandwich. However, once you sink your teeth into this sandwich you will discover the tastes of imported meats & cheese that is crowned with an impeccable olive salad and enveloped by a fresh baked round bread with a glistening sesames seed topping. This is the real deal, not cheap imitation that seeks to deliver quantity using less quality products.

The BEST muffaletta sandwich in the Quarter! Wonderful array of food choices for your kitchen, especially hard to find items!

A must visit to the birth place of the muffuletta. Might be a line but don't be discouraged as they are pros and it moves fast. There are some seating inside but if the weather is cooperative, I recommend taking it a couple of blocks for a picnic on the banks of the Mississippi River.

The muffulettas are life changing! I don’t even like olives! The bread that they serve them on is a mouthgasm and the product of a pact with satan that states that every time they sell a sandwich a unicorn is killed. Totally worth it.

Thanks so much for present to the world this delicious food!

Looks like a hot spot to go to while in New Orleans. I wouldn't say it was worth the hype. There was no wait during the early afternoon. The muffaletta was pre packaged ready to go. I'm not a big fan of olives so that was a little overwhelming. I also wished the sandwich was hot. The meat and mozzarella on the focaccia was good though!

I don’t get there as much as I would like but this place makes my list just because of one sandwich, the Muffuletta . This original New Orleans sandwich is a one of a kind and always a special treat to pick up in the French Quarter. I love the olive dressing that’s put on this culinary delight and it’s also a great cure for a hangover!!

Home of the original muffulata sandwich. One of these tasty sandwiches will feed at least two people. Make sure to take some olive salad home for later.
William Austin
One of the top sandwhiches in America!
Peter Nagle
Extremely tasty! Line moves pretty fast too.

Best muffuletta you'll ever eat! Stopped through N.O. last month to eat at Mother's (also an amazing place to eat) and we got one to take home to Dallas with us.....that's how good they are.
Rae Ann Caparelli
Muffuletta sandwich was good but olive spread on sandwiche is SO SALTY that you should take into consideration if you need to watch salt intake like my bf. Sandwich put him over intake for the day. But very good sandwich
Douglas Smithman
They sell a really big ham sandwich with an olive spread. It must be impressive to somebody but not to me. However, they do have stuff on the shelf that you won't find in most stores outside of the Italian Market in South Philly or the old country.
Doug Raybeck
They are believed to have the best mufaletta sandwiches in the city, but I really find that to be too confining a description. They are the best I have had anywhere and that would include San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. They are enormous so be prepared to take half of it with you.
Marcia Hirsch
Great little Italian market. The quintessential muffuletta. Take out only. They also sell jars of their olive salad (wrapped and boxed if you want to pack it in your suitcase).
Gil Carbajal
Old style Italian market and deli. Very friendly and the Muffeletta Sandwich they are known for is very good. A whole one is rather big but the sell halves as well. So if you're near the French market it's worth the stop.
Marissa Gulioso
Great muffuletta! Try it with the crystal hot sauce. We bought 2 bottles to take home which were way cheaper than Amazon or any other souvenir shop
Torrey Vegter
Best muffuletta I've ever had! Bread was really good and the toppings were fresh and delicious as well. Will definitely return next time I'm in the area.
Melissa Schillinger
The Muffaletta at Central Grocery was out of this world. The venue was tight, but offered plenty of seating for those looking to sit and enjoy their sandwiches. The staff were friendly and efficient.
Johnathan Vaughan
We went to the home of the muffaletta where this delicious sandwich was invented many years ago for dock workers. The muffaletta bread is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The olive salad topping really sets this apart from ordinary sammies! It was delicious and can't wait to try another!
Deen Waddell
Believe the hype! I love this OG muffulatta so much! It's the stuff dreams are made of. Buy one to eat then and one to take back to your hotel minifridge and eat at about midnight. Then go back and get one to eat while you drive home. You are welcome.
