A nice small neighborhood grocery with good produce, beer and wine. The meat and deli sections are nice, but we have had bad luck ordering prime rib for the holidays two years in a row. Very fatty, expensive and disappointing. However. the gravy for mashed potatoes from the deli case or for holiday meals is beyond good. It is so good it could be habit forming! Ha! The deli department is well-stocked with something for everyone and the hot case is small, but with nice offerings. We love the floral department too. I am hoping it stays because I never see anyone buying flowers despite pretty cut bouquets and plants! And you can purchase by the stem. A bit pricier than big grocery stores, but it is a neighborhood grocery store. They have bags of packaged imported butter cookies in many varieties. OMG. The staff is always friendly and even the young employees are usually great. They have obviously been trained not to be on the phone or talking to one another during customer interactions. I know this sounds crazy, but they remind me of the way you'd expect employees to be, not they way they often are. The store can be very crowded at times, so you'll just have to get used to it and be happy they are doing a good business. The good news is that they really do carry a lot of produce for a small store and beyond the usual staples. I have not noticed much diversity among the staff and would like to see that change a bit, but of course, I do not know if they are receiving applications from a diverse group of people. People have complained about panhandlers in front of the store, and this is often the case on all of Downer, but if you are lucky enough to live near and shop on Downer, even as a student with roommates you can open up your wallet or learn how to kindly say, "not today". I'm reading this review and realize I could come off as insufferable, but I like to read reviews with good information so who cares!

Why aren't you at Sendik's getting dinner at their hot bar? I'm not complaining, that's more for me, but for real. I'm eating a feast. I got roast duck with orange sauce, black bean salad for my vitamins and mini-ralz, and for tomorrow a half pound of Texas roast beef. The price is right too. Seriously go get dinner at their hot bar. It's amazing.

This local neighborhood grocery is great! I had been looking for a local grocery store since I moved to Milwaukee and I found it! Everything was easy to find, didn’t feel cramped, and the prices were really good! Lots of variety and they carry a lot of local brands you won’t find at wal-mart, metro, or pick-in-save.

This neighborhood store has a great selection of produce, meats, cheeses, wines, breads, etc. There is something here for everyone, even the most discriminating gourmet, college kids work here, it's close to UWM, friendly family kind of environment. Gotta love Downer Avenue on the East Side of Milwaukee.

The takeout Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic! Everything was delicious and appealing. Easy to heat and put in my serving dishes. If I hadn't told our visiting company that it wasn't my cooking, they would never have known. We highly recommend it!

Good atmosphere and great service! I cannot go here often because I am broke, but it is such a treat when I do! The folks at the deli counters are so sweet. Bonus: I feel safe while shopping here. Though it is a tight space, everyone tries their best to stay in their own bubble and wear properly fitted masks.

The cashiers are always friendly and the store itself is cute and small. The prices here are higher than if you went elsewhere but I just go here often to get a couple of things since it's just a walk away.

It's a smaller store than I'm used to but the staff was so amazing and knowledgeable. The only thing that I would not recommend is the bakery. I've tried at least eight different baked items and they were not tasty. Some of their cooked foods were not good either. I'll never buy their cooked goods or bakery goods from that location again.

It such a pleasant place to shop. I picked up some cabbage rolls for dinner and the deli woman suggested a rice pilaf to go with it. I grabbed an organic washed salad with some Italian dressing. Perfect! Thank you Sendik's!

Great, locally owned, full-service grocery store. Yeah, you pay a little more but quality service, produce, and meats are worth it. I'm an almost daily shopper and love this place. If I want a whole chicken, cut in pieces and skinned, they'll do it, no extra charge.

I love this store and I am a new fan of the deli department (I'm looking at you General Tso chicken nuggets!) but there needs to be someone getting a handle on the customers ordering their deli takeout and then waiting for it. The older gentlemen who seem to be regulars were sorta kinda masked (noses hanging out) and were unfamiliar with the concept of distancing. You can only back away so much before you're bumping into the person behind you, also trying to back away. The aisles are narrow and the main grocery area is smallish so you have to be aware of folks around you but all in all, outside of the deli chaos, not too bad. The employees are all masked appropriately and have plexiglass protection. They do not address customers who flout the requirements, unfortunately. Love how friendly the checkout people are, it's refreshing after a Pick N Save grunt and glare. So, great food, friendly employees, decent precautions in place, somebody please talk to the old guys milling around the deli!

I went all over the eastside the other night trying to replace the Ben & Jerry's® "Super Fudge Chunk" ice cream that I stole from my roommate so he wouldn't notice. Long story short they didn't have it here but did have it next door at the CVS. It's all good because that particular flavor is horrible and I'm glad Sendik's doesn't carry it. I will be coming back to grab groceries here, reminded me of a legit old-school shop- no self checkout here my guy!

The quality of the food here is great. Recently had an experience that was off-putting though. I’ve requested the butchers for a few pounds of top sirloin cap in the past, but they said they don’t do it when I had someone run and get the same order. A little disappointed, but I don’t this is all the butchers that work here. Other than that, great experiences here.

I really prefer the deli at the Downer street location. I work in that area and there is always a decent selection for lunch at a reasonable price. Especially for the portions. Friendly staff, clean environment. Finding parking is the only thing that be a little tricky sometimes.

I was doind my every other day shopping and found all I was shopping for today. They didn't have a large container of unsweetened coconut yogurt and they are going to order some and keep it stock for me. Way beyond customer service. Great environment and very clean and friendly.

This particular Sendik's has superior produce compared to the others. Not sure how, but their fruit selection in particular is broader, the food is always riper and tastes better, and they have better deals and discounts. Plus, the Downer location just feels cozier, your friendly neighborhood grocery.

I started coming to the Downer Sendiks after the one on Capitol closed. The store is well stocked and very clean. At least on the east side, this is the best produce and butcher you will find. Their bakery is also top notch. Best of all the staff is knowledgeable and incredibly helpful.

I love the variety of the Sendik’s deli in this smaller store. The menu there is diverse and well thought out with quality ingredients. And yes I said menu, because it offers normal deli (hot & cold) foods, but it also offers fresh sandwiches hot off the press. Anywhere to a classic Reuben to a blueberry compote and goat cheese sandwich. They have it, so if you need a quick and delicious lunch, grab it at Downer Sendiks if close cause it’s surprisingly worth it.

I love this particular Sendix! The atmosphere is very "old country", theres lots of good quality food as well as nutritious foods available & the employees are helpful & friendly. This is definitely my Sendix of choice over & above all the others in the city.

Aisles bit narrow as they have a lot to fit in their store. Their produce, Bakery, deli, meats, floral department are all top-notch. You can't go wrong shopping here. You pay a little bit more but it is well worth the money.

This place is great with unique items, a good beer selection and beautiful flower/plants selections and good produce. The only downside is inflated prices on even everyday items which are usually 30% higher than perhaps a Pick n' Save. They do have nice some sales from time to time though.

A very nice store but many of the same items can be purchased for MUCH LESS elsewhere. As for their meats: they call them "natural". This is a confusing description and one that is not recognized by the USDA. It does NOT necessary mean that their meats have no antibiotics or hormones , and this is of concern to many shoppers. I buy all my meats at Outpost, even tho the price is higher , because I KNOW FOR SURE that they NEVER accept meats for their store that have antibiotics, hormones or anything else harmful added. Sendiks would be wise to reconsider their stance on this VERY important topic. (Antibiotics and hormones in food are DISASTROUS for human health.) Sendkis also needs to lower many of their prices. Their plant area is gorgeous and very welcoming with the new remodeling.

Nov 2013 - This Sendik's has been recently purchased by the group that owns Sendik's on Oakland (Nehring's), north of Capitol Drive. They're re-doing the interior, have REALLY upped the quality of the produce, and apparently will be introducing a wine bar where the current flower shop is located. I'd keep an eye on this shop, and give it a try again if you haven't recently.
