Reviews of Shaw's
I do most of my shopping at Shaw's and TJ's here in Burlington. Get an account online and use the coupons they give you!
Pros:
Usually well priced
Generally cheaper than M32 across the street
Good and consistent produce
Curbside is great and easy. And FREE! (unlike M32 and Hannaford)
Nice staff
Can get busy but usually calm
Lots of digital coupons that are easy to use
Cons:
Wish they would reorder and restock kosher items they used to sell such as kosher fish sticks and kosher duck sauce
Strange experience - came with my wife for groceries and also added 2 bottles of wine. Whilst paying at checkout I (aged 46) was asked for ID which is fine - but then abruptly also asked for my wife’s ID who wasn’t paying. She didn’t have her wallet so the cashier refused to sell us the wine. So we both called by the State liquor store and no ID was asked for. Seems a very strange policy and perhaps an over zealous cashier.
I Love Shaws so many good deals.I go to 3 different stores. On 12/17/22 went to Shaws on Shelburne Rd So.Burlington VT. 8:30 PM Done my shopping was waiting in car for friend to finish hers. Shaws had both entrance doors locked had to use exit to get in .5 different cars pulled up went to doors thought store closed and left. There was a small letter sign saying to use exit door but sometimes not noticed.. Should just put a bigger sign on doors. There is a lot going on lately and have to protect are property..
Not fancy but far less crowded AND better stocked than the more frequented competition down Shelburne Road...this is EVERY time I go which makes me switch loyalty and shop hear even though competitor is closer to my home!
Overall pleasant experience visiting this location which is pretty consistent with my other experiences at other shows locations across from mine. Friendly staff and clean store and Apple stock how to make this a stress-free and one stop shop for supermarkets.
Spacious store. Friendly staff.
Many specialty departments. Pre-made sandwiches are cheaper than other stores.
Doesn’t have an extensive craft beer selection.
Vast array of wines.
Clean restrooms. I’m going to start going here because the men’s room at Price Chopper smells.
Received knowledgeable help from store employee when I found error in my bill. Received adjustment promptly. ALWAYS check your bill, especially if you are on rewards program and do the just4u system. Check-out register does NOT always function well.
Was able to find what I wanted without delay. Self checkout made quick work of my trip to the store. However, I don't appreciate being accosted by people asking for donations on my way out. That is the reason for for stars. There have been recently changes to the produce department, but manageable.
Shaws is shaws the one in Vergennes is expensive but the one in Middlebury and the one in Burlington are much different.
I love this Shaws. It’s the best one that I’ve been to. Great selection. It could be 5 stars if it wasn’t for the bathrooms. They are in need of some TLC. One of the womens stalls doesn’t even have a toilet paper holder and for months now they don’t bother restocking them. Instead rolls are left out on the ground which is very unsanitary. They never have paper towels either. Not sure if it’s a supply issue but it’s gross. I’ve noticed little red specks on the toilet paper roll which is from people cleaning their needles… Please fix this issue.
Not one of my top of the list stores. The customer service area is seldom open. Trying to find somebody to help you sometimes is very difficult. And I think their pricing is high on a lot of items. I always shop here for the sale items. And they are constantly having problems with their lottery machine.
Great selections. Way better than Shelburne Rd store.
best stocked store in Burlington, they even have rare finds. The meat section needs some help though 😬 …
In my opinion the Shaw’s is best grocery store around here. Always is wide variety of products and produce, bakery, wine and beer. And what is awesome there are hundreds products on sale
This store would get a 4 star rating possibly, if it weren’t for the deli service. During the morning it is usually better, as long as you get the right employee helping you (Mike and this other woman with pretty long dark hair, they’re both great). However there is one employee who is so slow it’s painful. I’ve witnessed dozens of customers walk away in the past 18 months because of this one particular employee. This employee is very nice, but so slow that one may think they’re in a hidden camera show at first. I’m talking SLOTH SLOW. No pep in her step, no sense of urgency at all when there are multiple customers lining up.
Yesterday I went in for one pound of deli meat and was so disappointed when I saw this employee at the deli counter, but one other customer was already being waited on so I was next in line, I thought it couldn’t possibly take too long. It took this employee over 10 minutes to scoop some salad into a container and slice ONE item. (The customers that walked away gave me that look of commiseration, like they’re sorry I now have to go through the same ordeal after waiting so long)
Then comes my turn- I politely greeted her and ordered my pound of meat (I prefer half pound but knowing how long it takes I don’t want to go back next week and waste another half hour of my life). A few minutes later she approached me (I thought she was going to hand me my order) and holds up one single slice to make sure it’s the thickness I want. Now I do appreciate knowing I’ll get home and have thinly sliced meat, which is how my household likes it, but now I know I’m going to be waiting another few minutes at the least. After a painfully slow show of slicing the product she then proceeds to very slowly wrap up the remaining hunk of meat, create a label for that meat, put it away and then make a label for my pound and finally walk over and hand me my order.
I’m the meantime 3 other customers have approached and then walked away empty handed after waiting over 5 minutes each before realizing they don’t have time for this nonsense.
*in the meantime There is one other deli employee walking through. Checking on the rotisserie chickens, seeing a line, ignoring us, walking back through 10 minutes later with raw chickens to put in the rotisserie, still no acknowledgement of the line. Mike would have stopped what he was doing and helped clear the line (and waited on 3-4 customers while this woman finished with 1). Shaws needs more employees like Mike.
Mike should get a bonus for going above and beyond on multiple occasions! Other employees should model Mike’s behavior!
At this point if I have this lady handling my order I only order salami because it has a long shelf life in the fridge, I can order a pound and not have to return to the deli for a few weeks. I would love to order ham, turkey and cheese as well, but who has that kind of time?? Not people with busy schedules, that’s for sure!
I started shopping here a few years back because Hannaford in Essex had a few awful deli employees who would slice really thick meat out of laziness when I would ask for “paper thin”, they’d show me a thin slice then go ahead and cut 12 slices per pound. So they lost a customer, Shaws gained one.
Shaws Is more expensive than Hannaford on almost every product I purchase and it costs me about an extra $20 per week, but I take advantage of the coupon app and rewards points and it ends up close enough.
Most of the cashiers are amazing (except one older female with shorter hair who ALWAYS HAS A SHORT ATTITUDE, even when at the customer service desk… ) and even during the pandemic with staffing shortages, they did their best.
But the slow older lady in the deli is completely killing the shopping experience for me, and apparently plenty of other people too. I wonder how much money Shaws loses per week due to this?
They will likely lose this customer as well if this keeps up. I’m busy and this ruins my already hectic schedule!!
The selection here is not what I'm used to compared to other stores I've been to in the US. But it seems to be keeping up with Vermont standards
They have great deals, lots of choices and the best meat!
Short on inventory in dairy section..
A little more expensive then Hannaford or Market 32
Superb friendly and no long wait to check out :)
They have a great rewards system to help you save on groceries and / or gasoline. I shop here 2-3 times per week for staples. My only complaint is that they don't have much of a gluten free section; frozen or otherwise. I've found that the best g.f. local shopping is Hannaford.
Lately they have had stuff that my grocery store of choice Hannaford has not had.
With Covid I feel like I am shopping at all 3 lately to find all of the things on my list
I recently posted about Shaw's Supermarket. Im am very HAPPY to say an employee/ manager finally showed me how to properly use the" Just 4 U " app. If your like me and find your self frustrated because you clicked on the items and can't figure out why there not ringing up at the register and there not in your "Just for U" basket let me know ...i can finally help.😁😁😃😃
Well kept grocery store and well stocked. Found everything I needed and more! Great deli meat selections as well as cheeses. The checkout experience was sub-par though. The baggers at the check lanes always avoid bagging groceries for generally big orders. This Shaw's is a very affordable decent grocery chain.
Front end staff make you feel so welcome even though you're going out. Front end mgrs. Julie and Nicole's positive demeanor stand out as does their cashiers like Queen, Philip & June. I believe the overall service here is fantastic and the general store manager Sarah along with assistant Collin should get high 5's from their supervisor and pay raises would be in order for all that have served me, not just those I've named.
Quite adequate, small selection compared to nearby Market 32 and Hannaford’s — but I prefer it because I can FIND things and whip through the store quickly. Prices are generally slightly lower than Market 32, and noticeably lower than Hannaford’s on many items. Fairly often, however, their “on-sale” frozen food dinners (like Stouffer’s and Lean Cuisine) have clearly been thawed and refrizen for one or more cycles of storage and handling. Be careful here. Otherwise, all of my purchases over 4 years have been fresh, with “sell by/use by” dates current on all items, from canned goods to dairy products, from breads to nutritional supplements.
I went here to buy a money order, which are suprisingly hard to come by in Vermont. The first day I went in, all the staff assured me that the money order lady would emerge from her cave behind the money order making station any moment. Soon, a line formed behind me. My dad waited in the car smoking and drinking white claws playing bejeweled or something. I knocked on the door to the cave. I asked a passing young man if he was *sure* money order lady existed. He was sure. 20 minutes later I up and left. I came back a couple days later and then there were 2 people in the money order station, selling me the quickest money order I've ever bought, like it took moments and I had to sign no paperwork whatsoever, which was, eventually at least, nice and convenient.
I may not be a regular shopper here but every time I do go I am impressed. They have a variety of products for groceries and I always find something new. Plus, the reason why I do go there is because of the seafood selection. I find it fresh compared to my other daily groceries stores trips. I work mostly nights so I am limited by distance and mostly time. Highly recommend going. Bonus is that there is a Starbucks around the corner.
I always shop at shaws on Farrell st, they try hard to protect people, but once again the deli section makes me not want to purchase anything there because they seem so depressed working there or if they see you they put their heads down and keep working. Shaws need to retrain them or find people who make you feel welcome.
Excellent service from a cash register attendant named Queen. They were SO friendly and helpful, smiling and greeting every customer regardless of whether they were greeted back with the same warmth and enthusiasm. Queen had a magnetic energy that left me feeling better than when I walked in. I usually shop at Market 36 (across the street) but will come back to shop at Shaw's specifically because of this positive interaction.
A good store that is well laid out. Sometimes a bit hard to find stuff and I have had a few poor instances with the cashiers incorrectly pricing my produce or bakery goods costing me more than it should. Other than that its a fine store.
In short: general customer frustrations have resolutions, staff is friendly and do what they can to help, functionality is the best it can be with that is available.
I've seen Shaw's as both a customer and an employee now, so I'll have a two part review.
As a customer, it's often very frustrating to not find what you need. Even more so when it's not in stock for over a week... Or two. The staff will more often than not check to see if it's in storage, though it's usually a case of no stock or there's no physical access to it. Having a raincheck helps as a reminder when I'm going through my coupons, and keeps the integrity of the sale. Checkout has always been easy, though I frequently visit late in the afternoon. A shame there's no more self checkout lanes, but having been an employee and seeing the statistics, I understand why they removed them.
Finally, produce is a hit or miss, but with some diligence there won't be issues. Staff are often overworked or stretched thin, so patience is also required.
As an employee, I've seen the other side - and it's not so bad. The staff are, more often than not, exceptionally personable and friendly. Everyone has their gripes, but it's like any other tough physical job. It's a large store with a lot of product, it's a challenge even on the best days. Their mymixx coupon offers paired with their weekly sales allow for great combination savings, especially when I'm lazy about it.
I come here because they have a good selection of dog treats that other stores don't always have
It's your typical big box grocery store, cheap food, expensive food, cashiers who always look like they dont want to be there and don't care about much... But... You are likely to find your grocery needs here. As long as it isn't ethically raised meets...
The store it self is very clean and help very pleasant. I did find the ladies room filthy and never found that before
Not being from here, I expected just your run of the mill grocery store. I was sorely mistaken. The staff was awesome, the produce was the best I'd ever seen. The meats, man, the meats! They were so perfect. I can't even describe how good they looked. My wife would move up here just to have the Shaws nearby.
Its a pretty BIG store with most every brand you can think of, they have a pretty nifty Organic section and the Deli has a large salad bar with loads of salads and Hot food to choose from. The deli also has some good deals like 2.00 off some of the pre packaged grab and go stuff. Check out some of the markdown stuff in the back of the store. Free wifi and large open area upstairs to eat with a cool view.
It's a big super market. There's a good variety of produce and goods. It's decor could be more cheerful.
Usually can find what I need, but all the lettuces have brown spots even the ones is containers. Also, Shaw's is the only local store that has decided to no longer offer a check cashing service due to the pandemic.
That's where I do all of my grocery shopping and it's easy to find everything because I know where everything is located
I understand these are difficult times but not to have flour, salt or any paper good on the shelves for almost a month is a little aggravating. The lady at courtesy desk very seldom knows where product is or if they carry it. I shop there atleast 5 days a week. I wish they had a list of every product they had so I would have to keep asking.
One of three great grocery stores in South Burlington and right off the I-89 exit. Easy for travelers to do a quick on/off visit when in need of grocery items + the Osco Pharmacy. Great International selection. The produce is above average. Shares the strip mall with a Starbucks, Five Guys, Subway and Chipotle. Highly recommended!
Very big store in Burlington. Has everything you would need even has food from other countries! Very empty during covid-19 makes shopping feel safe.
Closing early on Sunday since COVID-19 restrictions are in place. Otherwise a good alternative to Price chopper, Market32 and Hannaford for grocery shopping. Quiet on Sunday night.
Mainly shop here for discount bakery goodies and items I just can't find anywhere else plus they have a bottle return. Customer Service is also great and fast at getting you through and on your way.
If you shop using the weekly flyers, the money you save at Shaw's is better than any other market.
I go to Shelburne Rd. Shaw's and it is very clean, not crowded/room to causally move around, very friendly staff (butcher & deli & checkout) best meat / deli. I'm shopping at Shaw's alway's.
Excellent products, prices, and service. Not close to my usual grocery store but well worth the trip!!
I've been a regular at Shaw's for many years. The prices are competitive with the other supermarkets. It works just fine for me.
Good selection with really fresh produce all around. I generally find the prices to be a little higher than Hannafords, though the product isn't necessarily better. Good in a pinch and when needed.
My favorite grocery store when I'm in Burlington. Outstanding in every department, with abundant choice, variety. Clean and fresh atmosphere, too.
It looks small from outside but it's actually huge in the inside. Clean and orderly displays. I came here to just grab some water and snacks for our road trip. Nice grocery store.
Great selection, can now find things that I haven't been able to find in a LONG time but it can be a little confusing where some things are when you're used to other grocery stores, but the service and workers are great and very helpful
Shaws OK. New Monopoly game is not fun. Always have trouble with the app. and just get frustrated. Not good !!
Nice, Big clean store. Pretty good inventory.
It was a grocery store. No more, no less.
Helpful staff. Brought back empty bottles and cans for refund on the deposit. The redemption center is in a separate location just north of the main entrance.
Great customer service I wanted to thank Noah by helping me find the sauce I was looking for on Sunday.
It is easier for me to navigate. I am somewhat compromised in my mobility. A perfectly adequate supermarket.
the front end supervisor ms. queen is very helpful and customer service driven she will be the reason why I'll return
Great place for shopping, big natural or organic section. Need a cold of hot lunch, Shaw's is a great option to consider. And grab some groceries before you leave.
New hire in fish had no idea where the meat department was. She was super nice but she needs a walk through to know where things are.
Popped in for a certain type of flower, they were available at a great price, good selection and super fresh.
Easy to find things. Good selection. A bit pricey but sales are good. Careful buying produce -- it isn't the freshest in town.
Good selection of items that you need, good coupons are available for items. Can be a bit pricey. Good overall.
Always a pleasure shopping here. Wide isles and large selection.
Noah is my favorite cashier. He made my friends and I Shaw's Gold Members. We're the only ones. We're working our way up to Platinum.
I’ll admit I’m a Hannaford kid. Shaw’s produce always has this too perfect too big look. Makes me think of Barry Bonds in the BALCO days.
This Shaw's is doing a great job keeping customers safe during the pandemic and was well stocked.
Generally not too crowded. Carries all the basics, plus some brands not usually carried at other supermarkets.
The produce section is always nicely stocked. Prices are comparable to other grocery stores.
It's a nice clean store and they have everything you could ever want, except pita bread apparently. I couldn't find it anywhere
One of the largest and most diverse stores in the area. Overall great selection, and nice atmosphere.
Night crew leaves something to be desired. Overall a good store. A little expensive compared to Hannaford's...
There's food there I guess
Good prices, but always am overcharged for a couple of items. Today was no different. Only a couple of dollars, but it's every time. Ugh.
Monopoly is a fun game and great way to keep customers happy, and coming back.
The maple walnut muffins are supreme. My mom loves the pistachio ones.
This store is convenient, has good staff, and some great deals on select items.
They always have great deals on quality food and the produce section is always stocked with fresh and tasty food
I love shaws its one of the biggest grocery stores and they are amazing plus the app and savings are incredible
I can say out of all the stores in the area this is the best one. Clean, everything looks fresh.
Difficult to navigate, the store layout didn't make sense. Prices were higher than my hometown Shaw's (Vergennes).
Never too busy a nice in and out and not around a lot of people
My go to shopping stop! Good prices, friendly staff and an Amazing Cake Decorator in the Derby Shaws!!
Shaw's is a excellent store at the deli the chicken is delicious and they have great prices on food and the people are very friendly and courteous
A nice little store, always has good deals
Great selections & deals. Definitely recommend downloading their ap!
Gluten free available. Some not within dedicated section, also in regular freezer food
The staff is always helpful and the store is very well played out.
My Shaw's I live closest to,major bias, I love them for stocking my Guinness extra stout...extra stout.
I love the availability of custom sushi sometimes. He is very accommodating.
They're very polite helpful and I really enjoy shopping at Shaw's
The karen looking manager called my friends and i the n word and called us hippies in the parking lot
4 banger all day. Good store with a nice selection of products.
Good store, but I still like Price Chopper better
Good as any other supermarket, decent prices and no issues with staff members.
Shaw has great muffins and great deals frequently. Produce section isn't the best
Just like any other Shaws. The store is a little smaller than normal.
Nice store. Well laid out. Good deals this week.
I found what I needed in the store
Still consider myself a Price Chopper guy but I've slowly been converting to Shaw's.
Love the sales at Shaw's; it's a great place to shop for food
Self checkout is great, especially during COVID.
Store is clean, inventory and choices are the best around. Staff are friendly.
Its good .dollar tree store next door..big store have what u need.
It is for the most part a solid grocery store, my one grievence is the lack of self-checkout.
Big and clean and easy to shop at
Love the store. Great flowers and meat prices.
Went for lunch - salad bar and hot foods bar had many options.
Good ice cream, not super great food but good service
Always good to save on specials, and a clean store.
Are go to store for everything, then Hannaford's then Walmart SS
Great deals. Best salad and wing bar on the area.
They sometimes have trouble stocking popular items as fast as people buy them
Good prices and great customer service. Kristin is the best!
Love the Italian section great pastas from Italy! Spotlessly clean
Large store with wide aisles and a great selection of food.
Good supermarket. I like their deli.
I just don't like how the prices 3 going up.
Friendly service, good selection of healthy snacks.
Easy access, good selection. Clean store as well.
Great selection, always fresh and clean.
Always clean, short checkout times, friendly and helpful staff
Good prices.Frienly staff. A place to sit and eat upstairs
Usually can find good deals on produce!
Always great produce, selections. And great sales
Fresh food, not so helpful staff. Not so polite either.
We always love shopping at shaws
Better selection than in the Shaw's in my area
Shaws is definitely a grocery store.
It has deals I can use most weeks
Clean store with almost any food or beverage (including wine and beer) that you could want.

One of the best grocery stores in Vermont.
Love the store. App is a bit confusing
More of a variety than Hannafords & Price Chopper
Lines can be long, produce department lacking in variety.
Great selection and plenty of parking.
Good selection, pretty good price too
