Disclaimer: The only reason I gave a 4 was because they didn't have one item I was looking for! So for it not being a perfect visit I couldnt see giving 5 out of 5 stars but I'm sure most will have a completely perfect visit as I normally do! The staff is full of knowledge, has loads of patience (I had a lot of questions! LOL) and kind. Gave great recommendations for future purchases when I get more money, also! This place is an icon for Portland! Their sales and value brought me there. However the staff is why I will return! "My glass runneth over", so to speak.

This is the best art supply store in the region. From pens and pencils to paint, canvases and frames including easels, pallets and smocks. It's a labyrinth of intrigue for an artist. You can truly get lost in the melee of goodies.

My favorite art supply store in Portland. Staff is very helpful, huge variety of art supplies and paper, locally owned and have been here a long time. I've been using them for almost 20 years. Never have had a bad experience!

OMG.. I had never been here and just stopped in to see if they had brush pens. Not only did they have a huge selection of them but in so many colors and hues. I ended up spending so much time just walking around and seeing what all they had. Off you need art or drafting supplies this is the place. The sales folx are friendly and very helpful. My partner and I recently moved to the area and we love walking in and browsing and typically leave with something. As a calligrapher I really appreciate there extensive inventory of calligraphy pens, nibs, inks, automatic pens, and drafting supplies. The prices are as good or better than online. The staff has always been helpful and kind.

I have come to shop at this art store total of 10 times over the years and my most recent, usually most of the staff are very willing and helpful when answering questions some staff are not as friendly when asking questions won't even say hello to customers but other than that I find they have just about anything from airbrush kits, painting supplies spray paint, graphite pencils and different kinds of sharpeners.

What a gem! They pack a sick amount of variety into this store, it seemed like they’ve thought of everything that an artist might need other than clients(amiright?) Also, the person that was at the counter immediately shifted from what she was doing in order to guide me to what I needed for my drafting supplies so that was very helpful. Small business really succeed where the internet cannot; this place is a strong example. Go buy something!

They are so nice here! My son, who is 10 years old and an artist, and I came in to get a couple little things for a school art project. The prices were very reasonable and they have a really good selection. We didn't have a lot of money but I was able to stretch tour budget to get him a few really nice drawing pens. When the clerk saw how serious and knowledgeable my son was about his art, he went and found some very nice pens and paper in a back room that he just gave us, one artist to another. This is definitely our supply shop from now on.

Massive independent art store. They have been around for years. Well curated selection of products; prices are fair for brick and mortar. From student to artist/professional supplies; from drafting; sketching; inks; acrylics; oils; watercolor; spray can; airbrush; on and on. Staff are very helpful and patient, I hear them answering stupid questions with grace all the time.

Can't beat this place for fine art supplies. If you're here looking for customer service then you aren't really serious about what you're shopping for. The staff is always knowledgeable and helpful, maybe not as peppy or social as people expect, but this is a place for finer crafts of all sorts, and you can't really expect that out of artsy people. Whatever you need, they more than likely have it, as well as a better product to compare with it. Always satisfied with my purchases and quality of product.

This place is great! Maybe a little dangerous because they seem to have all the things I want to spend money on. Hard to stop in here for just one thing because before you know it you have 3-4 items in hand contemplating 4 more and want another 2 haha. Nice, friendly, very helpful staff. And quality clientele. If you're in the market for for art supplies for just about any task, they have much of what you might wish. Additionally, they have a line of transport options (e.g. - portfolios, pen/pencil wallets, paint caddies, brush rolls, etc.) that are hard to beat both quality and price wise. They also have a good selection of easels that are very reasonable. I would be remiss to not mention their airbrush selection. They have a great supply of brushes and paints. Definitely worth a trip.

I was looking for some inexpensive substitute art supplies for an non-funded public elementary school program that I teach. I found materials that are nearly as good as the professional materials for a fraction of the price. I was also impressed with the teacher's discount! My kids were thrilled with our project and felt like "real" artists to boot! Loved the experience enough that I am returning today to get supplies for myself.

I love this place. I don't get there enough. They have tons and tons of great options especially when it comes to paper. Lots of good stuff to choose from. Their pen selection is great. Lots of options to buy individual pens rather than just boxed sets. If I could just win the lottery then I could easily buy a truckload of art supplies from this place.

The employees answered questions providing actual knowledge regarding the products they were selling. When I went it was a less employed time but everyone went out of their way to help my friend. Prices a bit much for the specific acrylic brand I use, but better than most. A great selection. I recommend this place for the discerning artist.

Great locally owned arts and crafts supply store. They carry everything the artist or drafter could possibly want and have quite a good selection. Many of the items are buy one get one free so its a great place to get a bargain. They have a custom frame shop as well as selling standard frames and matting materials. This store is my go-to for art supplies. Big selection of well known and trusted brands, and they always have some "buy one get one" sales going on. Just about anything you could need! Not a lot of photography supplies, but otherwise, it's got something for everyone!

Great family-owned art store. Local students with ID get 20% off most purchases, which is worth it. Not a great selection of Canson paper, but they have a lot of canvases, papers, notebooks, art pads, pens, markers, India Inks, etc. Their clearance section is usually pretty good too. The only thing that bothers me is that every time I go in here, I get followed around, which is really uncomfortable. I don't know if they're being really over-ambitious about helping customers, or if they just suspect everyone of shoplifting, but it does make me uncomfortable to see someone always standing at the end of every aisle I go down, slyly watching me. Like, what?...I usually walk in there holding only my wallet, not even carrying a purse, so I don't know. Overall, I like supporting the small business and the 20% off for students is great.

Great art supply store. Consistently has a large selection of items that are BOGO, making them very competitive on pricing. Selection on certain items is small (for example, their fountain pen selection is somewhat limited but they have aisle after aisle of paper and notebooks of all kinds). They have a really great selection of quality kids' art supplies as well.

They were all (4 total) very helpful when it came to letting me stash my bag and winter gear behind the desk, find the right kind of paper for my project, and offering me a student discount. The fellow checking me out was also very patient in explaining how a certain markdown meant I could choose a free product of lesser value. It's quiet in there and roomy compared to other art store suppliers.

HUGE locally owned art store with a massive selection! They have practically every medium you could think of. I've been going here for so long, I'm basically an investor. The staff are always friendly and check to see if I need help frequently. They love to hear what new crazy thing I'm working on and even ask how the previous creation came out. The layout is pretty intuitive and moderate prices.

This place is great! The selection is fantastic, I'd compare it to the late great Pearl on the east coast and Sam Flax in Florida, two of my favorites. Or Plaza Arts, if it were much larger. These are the kind of stores focused more on supplying the artists and craftsfolk, more than simple arts-n-craft stores. I'll be back!

This is Portland's best store for new art supplies. Best prices, easy to find parking. What is more important, however, unlike almost every other store these days, is the employees know all about the materials, their uses, what they're for, etc. Very knowledgeable and very helpful and friendly, as opposed to most stores where the employees haven't a clue about anything and just stare at you and shrug. That's fine if your buying beer, but I prefer knowledgeable staff who can actually speak and discuss. They also have tons of art supplies that aren't main stream, like air brush supplies. They have everything.

Well if you have any thought that you might be able to to draw, or do art, this is the best place for you. Tools, equipment, and supplies for all your needs. And the staff, knowledgeable and charming knowing where various supplies are is well worth the money your going to spend anyway. It's still the go to place for art supplies.

Very well stocked and organized store with an impressive variety of products. I was put-off by the staff however. I asked one employee a question about the benefit of a product that was 4x as expensive as I usually pay (maybe it's a better brand?) and she just turned around and put her back to me. I didn't mean to be rude with my question but I felt that her response was unreasonably cold and made me want to leave the store immediately.

Three stars for good prices; but I'm taking two away simply because of the 3 women I talked to only one of them was even remotely nice. I was scoffed at when I explained what I planned to do with my supplies and I particularly didn't appreciate the mocking tone of the woman who checked me out and sarcastically told me "Have fun with your commission" as I left. Smack in the middle of what the late Art Media was, and what their successor turned out to be. One gauge is a better supply of fountain pen ink than the competition. Another is a line of affordable, good quality drafting tables. This reviewer wishes they had a more extensive line of DIY card stock for printing in a photo inkjet printer. Great selection of hand-made specialty papers for all kinds of art projects. Mat board in profuse varieties and colours. One quibble is their slightly higher prices for some items compared to the competition, but they are a local business, in an area one need not pay for on street parking. Two definite plusses. Worth your time to visit. Wish they carried shell gold for art projects, though.

Columbia Art & Drafting has been my go to supply store for decades. In many ways they deserve a 5 star. The prices are at least competitive, often low. Selection is excellent, the clerks try hard to help. Many years ago, the service was even better, when the Old Guard sales team was there, and I think they knew their product line in detail. I've worked in retail before, so know to take bad reviews with a grain of salt. Anyone giving Columbia Art a 1 or 2 star rating probably would complain if hung with a new rope.

Haven't been here in a long time, there seems to be much more inventory than my last visit (many months). Perhaps this is since Utrecht closed Columbia is now the only competition to Blick, Columbia has redoubled efforts. Their inventory now seems on par with Blick. Their selection of powdered pigments (Schmincke, Gamblin & 1 other brand) is better than Blick (only 1 brand & limited selection at that). People have commented on employees checking on you. While this does happen, the context is the store only seems to have 3 employees (whenever I have been there), while Blick seems to have 15 employees for a similar size store - a store can be more discreet about 'inventory control' if employees are all over the place. If I could assign 3-1/2 stars I would. Columbia would get 4 stars if they had Sunday hours & their website worked - it seems perpetually down.

Columbia has the best selection of paper in Portland. Cardstock, washi, vellum, handmade, origami, chip board, mat, corrugated, and the rest of it. Also plenty of decorative papers from different paper making traditions around the world. Look for the catalog of papers on display so you don't get overwhelmed by all of the drawers.
