This place is the greatest. It absolutely demands a visit. And the popovers are the biggest. All the items to look at and purchase are too numerous to mention. Also visit the cafe.

I love coming here with my family. There is plenty to choose from, and most of the items they sell are not on big chain shelves. I adore looking through the herbs and spices as well as the knickknacks and antiques. The only thing I can say that is negative is that the prices are outrageous. I understand that this is a form of a small business, but if you are looking for something general and not special, I’d recommend saving money at a chain. If you’re looking for a special item I highly recommend the general store!

I've been going to the General Store since it's inception on Water Street when I was 10. It was a treat for my grandparents and I to go everytime I visited them in Excelsior. Now I live in Florida, so every time I get back "home", the General Store is my must stop! It exudes so many childhood memories for me and to see its growth over the years has been really heart warming. Can't wait to go in a few weeks! Their Minnesota selection of goods is AMAZING!

I liked it. There was a lot of coffee cups, sweaters and Minnesota shirts, bath bombs, mostly gifty items. There was quite a few children's gifts. It is definitely a good place to get women's gifts. There are some things for men too but not as many.

Very cool place to check out. There are a lot of near and special finds within the store. Staff is friendly. I didn't get to try the cafe, but it smelled delicious! Great spot to find a gift here.

A plethora of things, almost overwhelming there's so much stuff screamed into a small area. It would be good to build onto this facility and make it bigger and also make the parking lot bigger. Way too small of a building for all of the things they sell and all of the people there. Felt claustrophobic and the prices were unbelievably high not too thrilled with it. This is for people who have a lot of money or no budget.

Always a fun spot to shop. The ambiance is delightful. There are many areas within the store. Plus they have a great spot for sandwiches, coffee, tea's. And baked goods. Don't forget to get a pop over !!!!

Well, we located the only parking spot in the Gen'l Store's lot. It was packed with customer's quality items! I ❤️ this store because they have so many items from the past...love it! I was going to a favorite things party & I needed this item as gifts for the lucky people that night. I scooped them up & it made my day! Thanks to the staff there, It only took me about 10-15 mn and I was on my way. Thanks, General Store! And to my bestie Sara who drove me there!

This is another one of places which I never realized was right next to me. The collection of art work is pretty amazing, and you should be able to find something for any age groups. The staff in location is super willing to help you with any of your questions, and you will need their help to navigate the huge store.

A great store with lots of interesting nick-nacks, vintage toys and crafty type gifts that you really don't see anywhere else. It's a perfect place to find stocking stuffers and other gifts for that hard-to-shop-for person. Beware however, the prices aren't for the faint of heart, it is quite expensive. They also have a pretty good restaurant there where you can get made-to-order sandwiches, soups, salads and flavored cream sodas. Worth a trip if you haven't been, just be aware of the prices.

The store that has everything from delicacies, to sauces to kitchenware to decorations to jewelry to fishing gear to MN souvenirs & clothing to baby gear and clothing to books toys and games to women's styles you could basically shop till you drop and take a break in the Cafe which by the way makes delicious food. Salads, sandwiched, soups desserts and coffee... And the biggest popovers I've ever seen and go back to shopping

My mom and I stopped in for lunch. It was great. I had a French cabbage soup and a pop over. The soup was outstanding and the pop over huge and delicious with honey butter. Prices are very reasonable, it is clean, and the gal who busses tables was helpful and very on top of keeping tables clean and getting to-go containers. I forget this little gem of a lunch spot is here - but I won't forget anytime soon. I'm coming back for some Bridgemans ice cream next.

Such a wonderful store. Old time, small town charm in a busy suburb. Impressive collection of one-of-a-kind gifts and treats. Almost to much to see in just one visit. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Don't forget to look upstairs as well! If you have someone in your gift list that is impossible to shop for, this is the place to go. If you can't find them something here, you might as well give up and just gift them a hug!

A very girly place — Chock full from first floor to the expansive upper level. Gifts, gadgets, greeting cards, garments, toys, puzzles. If you can’t find a gift you’re not trying hard enough. Nice things but nothing out of the ordinary. A nice order-at-the cafeteria-line arrangement. One word for you: POPOVERS! Go early and avoid the rush.

If you want to experience every seasons decor then you must stop at the General Store. My go to place when people visit me. Then head to their cafe and have a delicious coffee with a wonderful bar or better yet with their famous popovers.

This was a fabulous spot to grab a quick sandwich and take a look around at some good ol fashioned midwestern gifts. They had terrific baked goods and a grand espresso machine. I highly recommend this place as the workers were super friendly and thorough with my order as I added on multiple items. The only thing I recommend is to take a look at the maps when trying to find it for the first time. Maps leads you into the wrong neighborhood across a major road system hwy7.

Love this place. You never know what you will find. There is always excellent holiday/seasonal items selection. Great women's clothing and jewelry, Minnesota themed food and gifts and a terrific section of kitchen goods and a whole lot more. Plan at least an hour. Don't forget to grab lunch in the Cafe.

I love this place. Great little Cafe for lunch and snacks. It is a fun place to finds gifts for anyone and everyone, including yourself 😉. Things are surprisingly affordable, but they do have some higher end items too. Definitely allow your self more time than you think, there is so much to look at. It does busy on weekends and around the holidays but that's because it's awesome.

Delightful shop with Cafe for a fun shopping experience! Multi level shop full of gifts, toys, jewelry, clothing, decor and kitchen items! There is a wonderful Cafe attached with fresh bakery items and made to order soups, salads and sandwiches. Prepare to spend a couple of hours minimum. Parking on side and in back is ample.

Needed 20 gifts Minnesota related for a meeting the next day. They had 16 and I needed 4 more...they called the supplier who then jumped in their car and drove in the other 4 I needed. The café is very nice! My mom and I had a very good lunch there. The interior of the store is also very nice. Unfortunately, the stuff they sell in the gift shop is not as nice. Everything is very gimmicky, generic, and overpriced. I used to go there for fun and unique items, but in my last visit I wouldn't have surprised if I found a "live, laugh, love" sign.

This was a nice store, but somewhat pricey. Walked into one area and the sales lady looked at me like she thought she was better than me. She never spoke to us. Just walked by looking down her nose. We didn't see inside the cafe but we wanted a few souvenir items and walked the store then left. We won't go back because the staff was not very friendly or helpful.

I just partnered with them to send a dozen custom gift boxes and my experience could not have been better--super helpful, great ideas, excellent products and the whole thing was an absolute snap for me. Came with my wife - wandered around and lost her somewhere. Lady comes up to me and ask's can I help you find something so I say yes you can - can you find my wife and I think a dozen women start laughing around me. Man this place was packed. Not my cup of tea but made the wife happy that we stopped since we were in the cities. We had French dip sandwiches and soup. Both wonderful.

I really enjoy my time when I come to the General Store in Minnetonka. The staff are great, I find it very welcoming. They keep the store really clean and organized so that I don't have to look around trying to figure out where I need to go to pick up things. I usually go when I am with my daughter and find things I need to store and then she buys them and that way I have a place to keep them all together. I got to go on a Saturday and purchased a cake cutter. Highly recommend.

UNIQUE! There's none other like it. First of all, it's family owned/managed and their TLC is evident, especially in the quality of customer service. This store, along with its cafe/bistro, is THE most positive retail place I've been. There's something for every age...even men enjoy shopping here! The display of an incredibly wide range of merchandise is so pleasing to the eye that it literally lifts one's spirit. The staff is welcoming, available and helpful...like having a personal shopper. This is simply a happy place that must be experienced!

This is one of my favorite lunch and shopping spots. The staff in the café are always cheery and helpful. You can tell they care about what they are serving. They are also knowledgeable as I have food sensitivities and they can answer my questions about the ingredients. Desserts are divine! You will find unique and beautiful items when shopping. Staff is always helpful when shopping and makes sure you get what you are looking for. You could spend hours looking at everything as the selection is huge. This store is unique. Lots of unique items at a unique cost. It is a boutique store that enjoys a certain popularity during the holidays. There are some things to know before you go: 1. Don't even think of bringing a stroller. No space, no time, and not kid friendly with expensive items at arm's reach. 2. Don't even think of leaving without trying food from the cafe. It's good and provides a nice break from the overcrowded store before braving the packed walkways. 3. Don't even think of spending less than $100, the merch is fun, unique, and expensive. 4. Don't even think of going on a weekend over the holidays. This place is not only at capacity it is a down-right fire hazard. I shudder to think of the chaos that would ensue if one of the light displays caught on fire. People were rude just trying to navigate the store imagine what someone might do to fight their way out of an all wood building on fire.... Overall, I can say that I will probably go back next year, but during the week days in the morning without our baby and after a healthy dose of Zoloft.

One of my favorite local stores in the Twin Cities!! Fun gifts for anyone on your list - clothes, toys, jewelry, candles, gag gifts, local MN gifts & foods... they literally have it all. They also have a cute little cafe in the back with salads, soups, sandwiches, desserts, etc. It's a nice place to shop, meet a friend for lunch, bring out of town visitors. Highly recommend.

Huge, beautiful selection of home decor, housewares, and I have never seen a wider variety of cookie cutter shapes anywhere. Lots of things you won't find anywhere else. Extra beautiful at Christmas time. They also have a nice cafe with good food. At busiest times, the side lot can get full, but there is always somewhere to park in back, if that happens.

We had a delicious soup lunch and bought a few items in the store. It's a fun place to go with a friend for lunch and browse the huge selection in the store. The toy section seems larger than before, with lots of new releases of vintage toys such as the Fisher Price dial phone. I wouldn't advise taking a toddler here; the aisles are narrow and there are attractive items everywhere to grab.

I absolutely LOVE this store. So many amazing unique things, gifts galore. And SO much stuff to look at. Truly something for everyone. Only gave it 4 stars though because the customer service could be improved. I waited at the register for a long time before someone finally helped me. Same in the cafe both with ordering a drink and being run up. It took forever. So long that I almost walked out with my drink. But otherwise I love it so much!!!

They certainly attract a large crowd during the holiday season. They have an extensive selection of holiday/home decor and gifts, clothes, Minnesota collectibles, kitchen gadgets, jewelry and more. The restaurant is also very good with excellent salads, sandwiches, soups, coffee and the best fresh baked popovers. Highly recommend, but plan to spend a lot. They aren't cheap.

This is a wonderful store. For those who haven't been here yet, if you prefer a more local and less big-chain type of store, this may be the place for you-- its very complete, with a comfortable easy going cafe downstairs alongside a broad selection of items to add beauty and comfort to your home (and as gifts), practical and fun kitchen area, as well as unique items that are difficult to find anywhere else. Plus a jewelry counter that carries Pandora.There is truly "something for everyone" here, though you must check every nook and cranny so you don't overlook anything. It's a very provocative place, slows you down and gets you thinking, less about run-in-and-grab. And don't forget the often-overlooked upstairs area which offers additional unique items, women's clothing & accessories, and a children's section. There's a hint of yesteryear amongst the treasures, items I remember from my childhood and beyond(including candies and sweets), that are still relevant today. The staff is always friendly and helpful (shout out to Gail and Crystal for creating the tasteful and elegantholiday table basket for me last week!), and not overbearing...they recognize there is so much to see and you need to browse on your own, until you need assistance or need something specific. I'm here frequently and more often during the Holidays. A word of wisdom, which I seem to relearn every year--if you see something you might want, and it's not a staple item, GET IT, because it will be gone by the time you come back, and they may not carry it again. My mother would've loved this store; everyone I've introduced to it has become a repeat client, and even as a guy, I've found countless items over the years for myself, friends, family. To the General Store--keep doing what you're doing!!

This a great store to find gifts and general items... which I realize sounds cliche. However, they have a great selection of items from clothing to knickknacks. They have a lot of MN themed items as well. Their prices are what I would expect from a local shop and the staff have always been friendly!

Love this place for gifts for XMAS or birthdays. Always keeps that small neighborhood General Store feel even though it's become a large store. Tons of nice boutique clothing for women as well as huge selection of nice costume and higher end jewelry such as Alex & Ann brand and great home items. Not just xmas decorations like most think. They have a huge selection of decorations though and great candy! Even a nice restaurant downstairs with great great food and bakery goods!!

LOVE this store!! If you are looking for something unique to give for any reason, go to The General Store. Buyer Beware, you will leave with more than you came for! It's 2 stories of amazing local vendors & trendy items. Another word of warning be prepared to lose time because there are so many things to see, but don't despair, you can always keep up your energy for more shopping by filling up in the cafe. The staff is friendly, helpful & will happily help you to fill your basket or two..or three!! What a great way to lose track of time!!

Wonderful store with amazing things you don't see anywhere else. The Minnesota goods are so unique and perfect for people who have cabins. The clothes are beautiful. The. Buffalo plaid items are fabulous. The baby, toddler and toy section is full of fun and beautiful things. You could literally spend hours there and not see everything. Then there is the cafe. We were there around 4 pm for a snack. The desserts are absolutely amazing. They serve house made popovers with honey butter are mouth watering. Them they have crispy popovers with cinnamon sugar, carmel and a huge wallop of whipped cream. They also had many desserts to choose from as well as sandwiches, soup, salad and Bridgeman ice cream. I am so happy we stopped to explore. The people that work there are friendly and helpful. Try it, you'll love it.

Seriously, it's a fun place to visit and has some unique stuff, much of it with a northern flavor. Staff are pleasant and helpful, as you might expect. Even if you don't "need" anything this store is fun to visit and browse. Oh, and when the holidays roll around, the store looks like someone set off a Christmas bomb inside: you'll find a staggering assortment of holiday decorations, from the adorably nostalgic to the delightfully tacky. I have been visiting this store ever since I was a little kid. Back then, it didn't have the huge addition with a cafe and second floor that it has now. At the check-out, my mom would always let me pick out 10 cent candy (prices have since gone up!). I always looked forward to my special candy treat at the end of our shopping trip. We also took advantage of the personalized items on kids' stuff- Easter buckets, storage containers for crafts/toys. Even all these years later, they still do personalizing. As an adult, I still look forward to each visit. I always find cool new and unique items. And instead of my 10 cent candy, I might grab one of their luscious desserts and a coffee! Yum!

OMG I love this place! My friend introduced me to it a couple years ago. Their popovers are amazing but, be there quick because they go fast and they only make a limited number!! when they're gone, they're gone!!! Last time we were there I had something called like a wild rice scramble that had wild rice and egg and veggie in it oh my God it was so good! They also have delicious soups! And make sure you allow yourself lots of time to go shop around in the store because they have something for everyone including things to take you back to your childhood ..I highly recommend this place!!

The General Store is a treasure trove!! I would need pages to describe everything wonderful in this store. The store is divided into specific areas. When you first walk in you're in kitchen heaven. Cookbooks, gadgets, teas and everything else that makes your kitchen special. The kitchen area leads into items for the home. Candles, mirrors, tchotchkes, rugs....it's endless (and heavenly)! The other areas include a cabin/outdoor area, a femme area, beautiful jewelry (they are a Pandora retailer), vintage candy and toys.... That's just the first floor! The second floor is all about being a woman and mother. Beautiful, comfy clothes, bags and books rule the second floor. Plus all of the items that make a woman feel good. The second floor also has a wonderful selection of toys for kids of all ages. I love this store. I always leave happy. The General Store is also a great place for your holidays needs. They also have a quaint cafe for recharging to shop more.

There is an attempt here to be a quaint establishment. Somehow the effect is lost with all the comically expensive cars parked out front. That said, the food is good, there's a large variety of coffees, pastries, soups and salads. There's ice cream and popovers as well. There is a ponderously winding shop in the back called a general store. It wants to be quaint but again, it is far too expensive to be quaint. It's quaint on steroids? It's odd to pretend that anyone who owns property on lake Minnetonka these days has a "cabin" but that seems to be the delusion the store is trying to sell. It's a bit odd, but then, if it makes you feel fancy to call your multi million dollar lake house a cabin, then I guess go for it? Most of the items for sale are decorative and novelty. It's fun to poke around but also slightly off putting if you're not living a wealthy lifestyle.

What the heck, everything has Minnesota themes! Haha, a great tourist hangout but just as nice for local fans of the state. Prices were on the high side, but what they lack there they make up for in variety. The place is maze-like, so it's not uncommon to realize you've seen a particular area already.
