I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Mast General Store in Asheville, and I was thoroughly impressed. What a fun place to browse in. We were on the hunt for a walking stick and the staff was very helpful in locating same. We spent a lot of time just wandering around the store with it's large inventory of all things "outdoorsy". I would highly recommend it as a destination when visiting Asheville.

Step back in time for baby boomers. Wax bottle candy, Lite Brite, Slinky and other toys of our youth. Camping gear, hiking shoes and lots of other stuff in an old Woolworth's store. Worth the stop.

This is much more than a general store. While upstairs is a very cool store that has a wide variety of products that are fun to look through. But downstairs is an awesome outdoors, backpacking and camping store. There are so many great products to choose from. The products are high quality and worth checking out.

Neat place to see items from 50 years ago. Candies, sodas and games. Old cap pistols. Down stairs they have the best selection of high end knifes for hunting, skinning, self defense or just whittling. There was so many items of different types of clothing and hats. Great place to spend an afternoon for your nostalgic fix.

This is a wonderful store situated in the middle of downtown Asheville. Two stories of outdoorsy clothes and lots of gear. Good books and games selections and a wonderful candy department with fun nostalgic candies. This is a great place to gift-shop for young and old-particularly outdoors oriented folks.

I always stop at Mast General Store when visiting Asheville. They have such unusual items, and great quality. Customer service is outstanding. A special note... it is often hard to find parking near the store, but Asheville is so delightful for walking that a spot a few blocks away is perfect.

An original 'western' store where one can buy anything from clothes, shoes and boots, hats and caps, scarves and ponchos, camping gear, knick nacks, tools, etc. Centrally located in Asheville, it is frequented by tourists and locally alike. The staff are very courteous and helpful. Hey, if you are in Asheville, you gotta go here.

Retro candy by bulk alert! I think I could spend hours in the mast, and the Asheville location is no exception. I love the variety and sale items or their shoes section. Special highlights of this visit was the selection of angry (or indifferent) looking bird figurines and a men's Cologne (the yellow bottle) that reminded me of the way cheap ribbon candy smells... Like mint and cinnamon and cherry all melded and smelt into a lump of sugary goodness.

This store is super fricken cool. It's basically if you were to take a cracker barrel and amplify it times 100. Being from Cincinnati I had been looking for a southern cook book, and they had available one from Tupelo Honey Cafe, which is some of the best gosh darn southern food I ever did have. So, great selection of home wares and such, in addition to a great downstairs with outdoor gear and more practical stuff. All in all super worth checking out.

There is one in Asheville, NC. One in Greenville,SC. They both carry similar things but are great none the less. Great place for buying souvenirs/outdoor gear. *cheat code* look for their discount bins/sale areas, brand name products for rock bottom prices. Got a $60 Patagonia bag for $12.

Great souvenir spot downtown. If you are visiting and worried about parking, Parking garage across the street and down the street from the store. Friendly customer service! We stumbled upon this store during our walk and it was pretty awesome. Cool clothing and little decorations as well as a big candy section. Everything was reasonably priced and there were 20% coupons when we walked in that we took advantage of. This has lots of hiking gear as were as footwear in the basement section. Definitely worth a look when visiting.

This is such a great store. Upstairs is that old general store that's great for taking visitors and a trip down memory lane. Downstairs is great if you like the outdoors - gear, clothes, knives, sunglasses and more. Staff is always helpful, happy, and fantastic. Dog friendly! Only problem I have with this place is I spend a lot when I go.

Welcoming store with country gear and fun gifts. Excellent apparel selection, but the real experience is in those little hard to find items that both locals and visitors will appreciate. My wife bought some tree decorations and I picked up a hard to find relief map. We also spent time browsing. Ok. Truth is I exited early to check on the dog, but wife stayed inside for a looooong time exploring racks and racks of stuff.

If you go, give yourself plenty of time as there is so much to see and an expansive selection of really nice things. We'll certainly be back. I absolutely love these stores. They always have the nicest staff working too. My little girl enjoyed playing with the toys in their toy section and they encouraged her play. They also have the best selection of candy which was hard to keep the kid away from, my inner kid as well! they carry top brands of clothes and shoes as well. Souvenirs in Asheville are hard to find however, if you want the limited souvenirs that are available, this is a good place to go. There is also a store across the street the has snow globes.. This place does not which is my biggest complaint.. There is a lot of cool clothing, useless junk, and a large selection of unique candy. Downstairs they have everything you would need for the outdoors. Very cool place

Shop the sales!! That's how you get great deals here. Buy your winter stuff in the summer and vice versa. You can anticipate when certain items will drop in price. Also, I love their jams, honey, and pickled items in the back.

I visited the General Store well on one of my very few trips to Asheville and had a fantastic time with family and looking at the stores. I was very impressed with their broad choices and Merchandising. Clothing was so cute and very well made as one of the blankets and clothes oh, the kids toys really cute, and it was much more that I unfortunately didn't have time to play but I would definitely be back!

Soo thankful there are good honest people left in this world. Friday my daughter went to Asheville with a friend for the day. When she got home she realized she didn't have her wallet. It had been misplaced along the way. Everything important for her identity, access to bank accounts etc was in there, shot record, cash you name it, it was there. So this mama was in a total panic thinking that we were in for a fiasco in the days/weeks/years ahead for her. This afternoon I got a call from Mast General Store in Asheville. Someone found her wallet and management happened to find my name in there and was able to find my number. (Side note, I Guess it really pays to have your name and business contact info blasted out on the web). Anyway, I immediately made a quick trip up to A'ville to pick it up. Every card, dollar and detail was the same as it was when she last had it. 🙌🏼 My heartfelt thanks goes out to Carmen at Mast General Store for locking it away safely until I could get there to pick it up. Good people DO exist in this crazy world... We were truly blessed by their honesty. If you are ever in Asheville, stop by their store. It's a great place and we owe them a debt that can never be repaid. 💗

Love this place! Great selection of outdoor gear at fair prices. I thought of it as more of a general store and didn’t realize how great their apparel selection is. They had a great variety of clothing for men and women. They also have a section in the back of the first floor dedicated to children's toys, candy, and kitchen supplies. I love how they divided the store with the men's/women's/children apparel, toys, candy, kitchen supplies on the first floor and all the hiking/fishing/shoes on the second floor. This is a fun place to go if you're looking for old-timey candy. They have barrels of older and new style candies and you can fill a bin for $10/lb. We got a bunch of fun stuff to fill Christmas stockings.

More for tourists than locals (and the prices reflect that), but still a fun shopping experience. I love the high quality socks and camping gear downstairs, and my kids are always eager to hit the candy barrel! The kitchen area is nice, with different and good quality kitchen implements. A fun store for that last minute gift!!

This is just the coolest old store. So glad we stepped inside when we were walking around town. Among other things my wife bought an awesome pair of earmuffs - which she later lost. So I called their customer service number and they said those ear muffs were not listed on their web site online but they had still some in the stores and he sold me me two pair and shipped them to me for only $5.99 and I got them fast. Oh and he gave me the sale price. he could have charged me the full price and I would not have known they were on sale. It is wonderful that there are still a few businesses left that still know how to do customer service.

Great place for souvenirs! Something for literally everyone. Loved the microwave corn on the cob that pops off the cob. Fun Christmas stocking stuffer. Lots of clothes, boots, local canned items, crafty birdhouses, etc. All affordable prices. Fun to roam thru the rows of old fashioned candy in barrels. It's a "must stop".

The area had 12 inches of snow and everything was shut down the day before. It was the perfect store to visit to purchase a hat and gloves to help stay warm. Before going to the Asheville store, I called to check for the item I needed. Two clerks seemingly went to great effort to answer my question which was appreciated. The following day I went to the store. I initially had trouble obtaining assistance from two sale's people who appeared to be engrossed in their own conversation. They did eventually disperse and one assisted me. Aside from the momentary lapse in attention to the customer at the later event, I appreciate the overall attitude at this Mast.

I almost went past because the store exterior is not that noticeable, looked like a really old building. When I went inside, it was swimming with people. This general store has all kinds of outdoor gears, clothing, outdoor shoes, canned foods and large barrels of candies chocolates too!!!! Hot popcorn were there as well. One of my favorite stores in the Asheville area! They carry a lot of the same clothes/ boots & outerwear that you would find in any outdoor/camping type of store, they always have a good selection pocket knives as well as more creative & often local made knives. I have gotten a couple there, one made from a horse shoe & another with an antler handle, both of which I really enjoy. Plus they carry a decent amount of kitchen utensils, including a wide range of cast iron. This is always a "go to" for me when Xmas shopping + the staff has always been helpful polite.

I shopped here accidentally while on a trip to Asheville, NC. Never heard of Mast, but the store looked old fashioned in a good way and I think they had a seasonal sale. They had a good sale, but what I remember was the helpfulness of the staff in finding the perfect new pair of shoes. The shoe department guy was really knowledgeable and really not pushy at all--just genuinely interested in helping me find the best shoes and spent a bunch of time doing it--I remember the guy 9 months after the visit. I recently had a problem with the shoes and used the Mast website chat service to see if I could somehow track down the receipt for the shoes for use with the shoe warranty--I didn't expect anything , but Mast produced the receipt 9 months later. Every business should aspire to do what Mast does for customer service. Nice people, reasonable prices, exceptional service.

She was very thorough and diligent and heartfelt in her efforts to rectify the situation in any way that she could. This is so much more than I expected and really made a difference in my view of the store. We hope that after sensitivity training the rest of the staff will also be as accommodating. Racist - every single time I come in here I get followed around. Stay away if you're black. Went here with my family and got followed around when the kids were just looking at toys. Another time I got followed when I was browsing sweaters. Such as shame for a nice store to treat their ethnic customers this way.

This is a great place - very similar to the Greenville MGS. Greenville benefits: store is a little bigger. I think a better selection of candy. Its also located closer to what I think is the best part of town (within a block of Washington st.). It is also close to a toy store (OP Taylors) so you can take little kids on a candy / toy excursion easily. There are THREE entrances! AVL MGS benefits are: it seems to be a better draws to street artists so you get the entertainment factor. I like that there are two distinct levels - unique staircase separates them. They have a better selection of frisbee golf discs. I think they have a better selection of cold weather gear given it is in the mountains. I wish AVL MGS had more of a college gear section. GVL has Clemson and USC stuff (hats, socks and such). They BOTH have a great candy and drink section. BOTH have great t shirts and camping equipment. BOTH are right next to Barleys. A pizza and beer at Barleys followed by a trip to MGS is a classic. Of course AVL is closer to many more breweries. That is one thing AVL has over GVL - the abundance of downtown breweries. My favorite buy from MGS is a topographic map of the upstate of south carolina. There is also one of western NC. Overall a great store and downtown experience.
