Reviews of Fort Washington Park
Kat Fred
Not far from DC he can experience some real history here at the fort. Rocking chairs, cots, cannonballs & cannons make a walk through the fort really interesting.
The views of the water from the fort are nice. The lighthouse adds to the historical coolness of the park.
If you have time there is a trail that loops you through the woods and back around to the front. It takes roughly an hour. It’s a Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.
Good parking available, though somewhat limited, so get there early.
De Anna
Fort Washington Park is historically beautiful. It's nice that it sits right along the river too. Be prepared if you're going to check out the historic site, it has plenty of inclines and declines, wonderful for a nice hike. I saw several people walking the parking lot and roads(which are obviously mostly flat) for exercise. There's plenty of shells on the bank of the river too. Fun place to visit, learn a little history, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river.

We took a drive over on a Sunday and really enjoyed our walk. I would recommend some waterproof hiking boots. Also if you bring a dog it would be smart to have a brush and towel in the car.
The views are incredible and a nice breeze off the water was nice even in the month of August.
Michelle MacFarlane
Finding Fort Washington for this trip to the area was by complete luck. But we had a great time exploring. Locally, we have Fort Monroe to explore, so it was interesting to see the similarity in the structures.
Give yourself plenty of time to walk around and see all of the history that is there for you to witness. But note that the Park Police are VERY vigilant about closing on time. They came in at about 410pm and gave everyone a reminder for closing at 430pm.
Bridgette Jenkins
Great park with a lot of walking trails and historic sites. Really pretty drive through as well or a picnic and bike ride. We went on a Sunday around 10am and there were minimal visitors but got hot quickly so we left about 40min in. But there was still a lot left we didnt see so we plan to return and check out another day and maybe just picnic in the shade.
Ann Yanagihara
This is a beautiful park. There's a lot of historic buildings and it's a beautiful settibg on the Potomac River. There are well groomed easy trails throughout the park, a Visitor's Center and plenty of parking. I didn't pay to enter but it was during the week in the late morning. Not sure if they charge on weekends as there was a gatehouse but it is Federally run. When I was there, it was quiet but with plenty of walkers so as to not feel uncomfortable. Dogs have to be on lead but there were plenty there.
Amanda Moon
Nice spot for a wander around.
The traditional wooden lighthouse is currently being restored. It was interesting to see nevertheless.
When we were there they we were doing reenactments, with canon fires at timed sessions. It was lovely to freely explore majority of the grounds and buildings, learning about its history on the Potomac.
There were many families there too, and I can see how it would be a good day out with kids, especially with the reenactments.
Jonathan Beary
Great location for an outdoor walk with some amazing sight seeing. The fort is open for limited hours each day but the surrounding areas are still fun to explore. Portable toilets are available for the brave or desperate visitor.
Chet Rhodes
A very nice clean Park located on the shores of the Potomac River very interesting history of this fort and how it's changed over the years. This seems to be a great place to take your dog as we must have seen at least 15 or more dogs being walked why we were there everybody seemed to have a good time.
Camille Mosley-Pasley
The lighthouse and surrounding beach areas are great for late summer sunset watching. Folks are fishing, grilling, swimming, boating and walking about with local wildlife (deer) which seem completely unafraid and unimpressed with humans and dogs in their environment. The beach area has lots of pebbles, shells & debris so don't expect to walk barefoot on the beach. There are quite a few black walnut and pawpaw trees so if you want to do a little wild foraging, bring a container for gathering.
Rena Correia
Came for our National Parks Passport stamps and found a beautiful park overlooking the water. Lots of history here with beautiful walking paths throughout the park. We'll definitely be back to walk around the park more leisurely.
Stella C
Very scenic and lovely to go on a walk and take in the local history. The core by the water and the paths are truly relaxing. You can go to the upper or lower levels or walk between to see all the park has to offer.
Rodricka Elliott
Fort Washington is a cool place to check out, especially if you are an American history buff. You have a chance to not only view the fort, but check out some artillery, period furniture, Harmony Hall (a plantation mansion overlooking the Potomac) and there is, of course, plenty of green space for walking.
Also, every first Sunday of the month they fire the cannon, accompanied with a brief history of the fort, on the hour a few times a day.
Warning: the sound is VERY loud so it may not be ideal for dogs or persons with sensitive ears.
Moving on with Old Man River Old man river
This fort right across the Potomac from Mount Vernon was built right before the battle of 1814. This is one of the brick and mortar forts built for coastal defense. This fort was to protect Washington DC. It was burned after the fall of Washington. It was then rebuilt and during the War between the states and upgraded with heavy guns. It was then upgraded for WW1. They kept the fort and building the same design.
Monica Arciga
What a wonderful surprise! This fort is huge with lots of green space all around. There are many rooms to imagine how defense took place. The views are great. I was hoping for a little more information about the fort and any battles that occurrrd. Plenty of parking.
Christann Chanell
I love the water. I love living near the water. Fort Washington Park is such a beautiful place to walk, sit, relax, read, enjoy an amazing sunset and even see a family of deer grazing on the grounds!
A definite must see for anyone in the area!
AAA -
Great day trip if you live in DC area. The fort closes at 4:30 every day. The area surrounding the fort is also great place to hang and have a picnic.
Yvonne Husband
This spot had the perfect view is the intersection of DC, Maryland and VA. It was a beautiful location a great, rich history of the Civil War. My friends and I learned a lot! The staff was very friendly and ready to share their knowledge!
Sue Kidd
The Fort has plenty of paths and places to explore, as well as some lovely views of the Potomac looking towards the city.
Antoinette Carroll
This a our new neighbor park, it's beautiful with very pleasant staff. My husband and I really enjoy the view of the Potomac River and the park itself.
John Heather
Want to explore someplace new? A quiet historical park along the scenic Potomac providing an excellent history of defending the capital and Alexandria's bustling port. The evolution of the big cannons is fascinating. The fort appears almost like a medieval castle, drawbridge and all. Lots of people picnicking and fishing along the shore. There's a picnic table along the shoreline, north end toward the city, just down from the lighthouse parking. The only reason for 4 stars is that there isn't a nice patio restaurant nearby along the Potomac, and National Harbor is usually a parking mess.
Kelly
A great place to spend the day outside with a lot of history and pathways for walking/riding bikes. There was almost no one there which made it peaceful.
EDP
This place is amazing & beautiful. The fort close @ 16:30 but the rest of the park is open till sunset.
wayniac917
Nice hike. Watch out for ground hogs in the fort 🤣 good views …
Jimmy Lapelosa
Always beautiful scenery. Clean park. Well maintained.
Carissa G.
Haven’t been here since I was a kid. I took my fiancé and it was his first time there. We both enjoyed it
Amanda Cantoral
Very clean and spacious. Lots of parking with bathroom facilities. Great views of the Potomac. Flat walkways/paths for all terrain strollers and wheel chairs. 10/10 would recommend for any family day trip. Dog friendly.
Gregory Stiller
Great Ranger. R. J. Helpful nice to talk with. Pleasant personality. Fort was enjoyable to visit. I can't imagine walking hundreds of miles in sweltering heat. Normal person can't live 24 hours with no A. C. Need that car from A to B.
NEW LIFE LANDSCAPING LLC
We had an amazing experience over the weekend visiting this place, the problem was that we stopped walking because a big tree was blocking the trail.
Kelly Jabbusch
Cool history, awesome views of the Potomac, friendly staff, historical buildings. Just lovely.
Joel Seppala
This place is unique among historic forts I've visited in that it looks like I imagine it to have been abandoned. There is ash in a broken corner cook stove, musty sheets on a watch bunk, and confines that otherwise boast of minimal restoration. I thought it was refreshingly authentic, but the wasps might be taking it a bit far. Humbly, I think the site has great potential and is nonetheless a destination for those looking to fuse realism with imagination.
Gregory Stiller
R J was super. But didn't tell me the 3 inch 🦋 cost $10. At store I paid $8 for a 13 inch butterfly. Nice place to see though …
Sean Finnegan
Nice national park to tour the old fort buildings and see how DC was protected against naval attacks during the 1800s and early 1900s. Beautiful views of the Potomac and DC off in the distance to the North. Longer trails outside of the immediate fort area to get some miles in. We were told they’ll start firing the cannons again on the first Sunday of each month.
Joana Ward
Historic Landmark and great place to go as a family to learn some history.
Cindy the ranger was very informative and gave us perspective as to why the team of 10 blew-up/surrendered the original fort after captain had only been on the job for 2 weeks and seeing the 10 British ships come up the Chesapeake Bay after they had seen 3 days earlier Washington DC be in flames.
There were also a few families fishing and exercising
William Branch
Excellent park, full of green grass and wonderful picnic spots. The fort itself was wonderful to explore. My kiddos had a blast! Definitely a 1.5 hours adventure spot.
Kenier Galindez
Great place to have a good time with family or friends. Got games for kids, a street in which you can walk or ride a bike and even a trail and a big lake or river. I go to this place bunch of times per month to take pics, never get tired. It’s beautiful
Ellie Correa Henao
Lovely place to visit with friends or family. It is 20 minutes from the National Harbor. Great place to walk your pets and have a hike. It has a small lighthouse and the fort is impressive. I wished it would be more maintained . The location is open and right in front of the Potomac River, lovely for a picnic. There is no entrance fee, and there is enough parking. The visitor center is a beautiful Yellow House. The view from the top of the hill is just breathless. The fort is opened starting at 9 am until 4:30 pm. Schedule during holidays changes. If you want to relax and enjoy a beautiful day this is your place.
Su Brotz
For anyone interested in history this is a great place to visit. The Visitor Center is very informative which was great since my scooter broke down about 10 minutes after I was on the grounds. I learned a lot about a place that should have been very important but wasn't because of a decision made by a commander of the fort. I also realized how ignorant I was about the War of 1812 and the reason behind the burning of the capital. I bought four books to remedy that situation.
Mindi Stavish (Simply Stavish)
Great place to get outside and explore old bunkers. My kids love searching for sea glass on the water by the lighthouse although at times there is a lot of trash from the river. Overall a nice free place to enjoy nature. You almost forget you are in PG county!
G. Eddie Patten, Sr
Absolutely lovely place to visit! The park is well maintained, the views are spectacular and the history is rich! The park offers everything one can imagine...if you are in the mood for exercising there is plenty of space to do so, from walking, biking, running and the likes. If you are looking to have a quiet lunch in the park, again, there are plenty areas for doing just that! If you love nature and just want to take it in....here is the perfect spot! Explore the Fort and relive the days of fighting that took place on these grounds. Need I say more, come explore, relive and excite! Fort Washington Park is a MUST!!!!
Adam Mcclaskey
The park wasn't very well maintained, looked to almost be abandoned and the bathrooms where closed. Same to see a piece of our history to look like that. Views were amazingm.
Derek 303 Schick
This was a cool place to take my son! He loved it!
Charles M
Great historical sight and also kinda creepy looking, but cool at the same time. Come here to jog walk around sit down. Great low key location to go out on dates or just hang out. Definitely check this out if you're in the dmv area.
Sachet Barnett
Calm, scenic, historic, spacious, clean. Bathrooms, playground. Good for cookouts/parties. Ample parking. Near water, dog-friendly
M Swaminarayan
Fabulous please for a casual walk or daily cardiovascular exercise or leisurely sit and view the landscape by the rippling
Potomac.... Even with your pets!! A definite plus for an American history buff!
Catherine Stewart
We really enjoyed our visit to this park. It definitely has seen better days; a number of the buildings are either boarded up or falling apart. However, they basically give you free reign to walk and climb wherever you want in the old fort. My kids had a lot of fun exploring all the different parts of the Fort. The views of the Potomac are beautiful too. There is a port-a-potty at the Fort and a bathroom with flush toilets by the parking lot closer to the water and the light house.
Tom Yee
The fort and old gun batteries are great to explore. You get a fantastic view of the Potomac River too. Bring water during the summer because it can be hot. The visitor center has a small museum and cool air conditioning. There are tons of picnic tables and even fishing spots.
Norman Moon
Lovely area for an afternoon with family, lighthouse and Fort for a look into the past
MARINA GRAHAM
It is amazing. Beautiful scenery, a nice park with historic buildings. You are able to walk around the battlefield.
If you love history or just want to explore here is a place to go!
Gary Christmas
I passed the sign on the highway and decided to stop. Glad I did this is a great park to visit. Loads to see and explore. Be prepared to walk it is spread out. Would be a great place for active younger kids, well preserved so doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see the gun placements manned and ready for action. It is off season so some of the buildings are locked but still tons to explore.
Pook
Very nice place a lot of the parking spaces.
703 CRUIZ'N
This was an amazing place to visit. I've always said that I was going to come here and 10 years later I finally accomplished it. Great place to bring the kids there's a visitor center a few old buildings and a few trails. Perfect for fishing walking hiking or a stroll with your dog.
Arielle H
Great historic park for working out or just wanting to get out during these times. Views are spectacular
Lynda Staton (Eurotrekker)
Fort Washington is an amazing place and is in pristine condition. It's directly on the Potomac River and very well maintained. You can take a guided tour (twice a day) or you can do a self guided tour, which I did. You can explore most places of the fort. Children and dogs are welcome.
Larissa
Beautiful view here. Great for photo shoots and and picnic. Waterfront park. I'm not sure when or if the fort are ever opens, it would be nice to see inside of it one day. Found 2 gorgeous trees with these beautiful flowers on them.
Tina G
It was a beautiful Fall day when I went with a friend who had never been there. It was very nostalgic for me especially when I came upon the lighthouse. I had taken a photo right in front of that lighthouse when I was 8 years old when my uncle used to take me fishing with him. It's a great place if you care to learn about the history.
Cinnamon Tucker
Very beautiful here. You can even see American Bald Eagles and their nests here! We also love the beach for sea glassing during sunset. :)
Kateri Ambrow
One of the few revolutionary war-era forts that survived the civil war! HUGE open fields and picnic/park area. Great for walks, picnics, team games, and -- of course -- history lovers! The size of the fort itself can only be appreciated fully when touring. It's huge. The view from the fort is also picturesque.
Chelsey Gray
This is my second time at Fort Washington and it was even better than the last. This time I was able to enter the Fort (I had gone after it closed the first time) and it was so cool. You can wonder all around and see some great views of the Potomac. There is an old cannon display and some informative boards around the area. Some parts don't have any information at all so I had a lot of questions but it was kind of fun to speculate how people used the area. The park is free for the rest of the season, I think usually it might be $10. Also dogs are allowed on leash.
edward leonard
Such a great place to visit. Loads of cool stuff to see. And this park is expansive! I had to drive to see it all. Lots of places to privately enjoy nature.
David Bingham
This is a must see if a history buff or military buff. Incredible how this was built in order to protect early American interest from foreign invasion. The fort itself easy to walk around, going to some other batteries is more difficult since it has not be restored. Much overgrown brush and trees, but worth seeing.
Stephanie Blanco Gress
A great park to explore and enjoy the views. The fort which you can explore has phenomenal views of the river. The kids loved it too.
Buddy Newell
I visited Fort Washington Park on a lark the last week of April. The park charges $10 for entry starting the first week of May, so I got in for free. The park is well managed with great views of the Potomac and the Virginia side of the river. Lots to see, and plenty of information points to learn about the history of the fort. I especially enjoyed the nature trail that runs along the river, on the perimeter of the park. Lots of space for picnics and family get togethers.
Alba Gonzalez
So serene! My husband actually proposed here! It was perfect!
Michael Montoya
Nice historic place to visit. Beautiful park. Nice for playing games, sports, or a nice picnic. The rivers edge is a bit dirty and littered. Please clean up after yourselves and use trash receptacles. Let's keep our parks beautiful.
Joseph Raczynski
Cool spot. The fort is substantial and sits on the back of the Potomac. The lawn is a little overgrown but gives it a bit of a rustic feel. It's worth a stop.
Angélica Garcia
Really great spot on the river. Perfect for taking a breather walking along the trails. There are also good spots to fish or just watch boats go by. At the highest point you get a nice panorama view of the city.
Taylor Richardson
Great area to walk around, snap some photos and learn about the history of the fort.
Jeff Barhum
Throwback to Christmas in the WAC dining hall in 1943.
What's your favorite holiday meal?
The members of the 67th Women's Army Corps detachment here at Fort Washington were very happy with the quality of their meals. Ila St. John, a motor pool driver and dispatcher wrote, “I must brag a bit about the WAAC mess hall. It was a treat for the men if they were invited as a guest for a meal. Army chow took on a different style and flavor when prepared by our women cooks.”
Aidita James
One of the most complete historical forts that I've ever visited. Lots to explore and might need more than one trip. Great for children, the boys played at being military the whole time.
Teadora Monteith
super large park, beautiful views, and the fort itself is very cool. looks like a great place to go for a run. make sure to check the hours for the visitor center if you're trying to go there because the hours are little different
Liberty Bell Moving & Storage LLC
Very impressive and well built fort with AMAZING views of the Potomac River.
J. Colt Dickman
Great place to go explore and see some local history. I went in the winter and it was still fantastic but if you went in the summer and took a picnic and maybe your bikes would be a fantastic weekend outing.
Tom Phillips
This is a really neat park to go to. Lots of things to look at and the rangers are awesome.
Rhett Savage
I skipped the fort on my first visit, but had a wonderful wooded walk on trails leading around the peninsula. Beautiful place!
Andrew Vitalo
A extremely well-preserved masonry fort with a great view of the Potomac. The more modern gun batteries are fascinating and the park itself is sprawling. Good for a hike or a historic visit.
Emily Strubert
We were really excited to take our daughters here for the Junior Ranger program but we were a little turned off by the care of the park. This is one of two National Parks we've visited that seemed to not be taken care of well at all. The first one was also in Prince George's County, Maryland and I'm wondering if National Parks in that area do not have good funding?
The grass was overgrown and trash bins were overflowing with trash laying on the ground. The fort itself is a gorgeous testament to the history of America and there is a beautiful view of the river from the top. The location is just amazing! What was sad was that this amazing piece of history is so badly taken care of. It looks like it's in complete disrepair. The gate to the fort is overgrown with vines, weeds, and mildew. There are two parts inside the fort where you can walk down and explore multiple stone casement bunks. The cement stairs leading to them are fully overgrown with weeds as high as my hips (I'm 5'7). The bunks beds are completely destroyed and look more like trash. In the fort gates are two rooms that are infested with bugs and spiders. One of the ceilings in one of the rooms has a huge hole and is falling a part. This place is in bad need of repair and refurbishment. It's really sad to see a National Park, much less a piece of American history so close to Washington DC, in such bad shape. I've never been to a National Park in this bad of shape. We went on a weekend and never saw a ranger anywhere. It is worth the visit because it's such a fascinating piece of American history and the view is gorgeous. Really wishing the NPS gets some funding to restore this place to the magnificent place it once was.
Carolyn Leary
Great running area. Multiple running sports were happening all at the same time. They also have multiple picnic areas for you to cookout with your family and real toilets verses Port-a-Potty.
Kevin Spann
The park is historic and offers so many levels of family outdoor activities. There is plenty of parking and lots of grounds to explore. The park is available for reservations of select picnic areas. Thoroughly enjoyed this park AGAIN!
Glen Morris
A historical place to go, even on a rainy day!
Fort Washington has some really unique landscaping and infrastructure to go and learn a little more about the areas and the country's history. They do have a small information center. The information personal that are there to provide assistance are also very friendly.
It will take about 1-2 hours to get through everything and has some great scenic drives!
B G
Very nicely preserved fort and park area. Ample space for picnics a playground and walking trails. Check the website for cannon firing days.
Andy Tapia
Awesome fort, somewhat of a hidden gem at the side of the Potomac river. It almost looks like a castle minus the towers on the corners. Definitely worth checking out!
StoneTapa
I enjoyed the local area and took a nice walk near the water. Can't wait to come back again.
Katie Callander
My favorite park! So much to explore! I have been three times and still haven’t explored all the forts/batteries.
Jithu Johny Panjikkaran
Peaceful and great to take kids to. A historic place with variety of activities to indulge in. In off seasons, entery to the park is free. Else there is a parking fee.
Disponded
Great fort and ramparts. It's a shame that the authorities don't do more for this place and provide more facilities here. The visitor centre is small and has a small shop, a small video presentation room and a museum room which are informative. There is no cafe to purchase a hot or cold drink or a snack. The buildings in the fort area are starting to deteriorate with a ceiling falling in and doors hanging off. More needs to be done to preserve this structure.
Samady KS
Good for relaxing, it’s calm and quiet. I come here for fishing but feel like it’s more for enjoying nature of waterfront but no fish here.
Margaret Proctor
The view is nice it's nice and quiet but you can't really go down to put your feet in the water because there's a lot of debri
big Bear
Fun place for bikes and strollers. Lots of hills and paved walking paths.
Karyna S (KLove)
Really pretty area, green and nature. Great get away from the crazy bustle of roadways. Several boarded up buildings. Wish the was a little more explained more areas. Sad people leave there trash down by water. I picked some up but was not prepared to do as such and there was so much!
T Janae
This park is close to home so I love coming here to sit by the water or to go for a quick walk whenever I need to clear my mind. With that being said, this park could be a lot better. While I understand it has historical value and charm, I think the walking trails could be a little more manicured. One of the trails leading down to the water is a complete walking hazard. The playground area and picnic tables by the water and lighthouse need some upgrades as well. Fix that and this park would be perfect.
Jon Carr
Sooo cool! I loved the history and the veiw! The fortifications were spectacular!!!
David Doty
Very cool to see a hundred years of fortification technology, ranging from 1820 to 1920. I grew up near Fort Knox in Maine and visiting Fort W took me back 50 years. Lots of paved paths, so pretty easily accessible (with one long, steep hill that might be a problem for some). Lots of interpretive signs and a nice (but small visitor center). Enjoy!
bluseman
Took the dog hiking on a hilly path thru the woods down to the water. He loved it, I loved it , very peaceful.
Jillian Johnson
Visitor center and fort still closed to public but there is plenty to see and do along the walking trails.
Olga Chatfield
Cool place to visit, interesting history! Beautiful view!
Kazi Daulat Sarfaraz
Beautiful Histori Park near DC. 20 minutes drive from DC suburbs. Early Military Fort along with Lighthouse.
Mitesh Patel
Nice historical place near DC
Jadyn Stumpf
This is a cool park with lots to explore and uncover! Fun for couples, families, pets, and history buffs.
Marilyn Breedlove
Such a wonderful and significant historical site in the Washington area. Well worth a visit. Sad to see it in such poor shape
Talitha Eicher
Please stop to see this Fort. A wonderful piece of history hiden away. From the Liggthouse you can see Washingtons house across the river. Ther is information for you to read or there is a map with more information in the visitors center. (Yellow building) great staff and will to help with questions.
marloqhita payne
It use to cost a few bucks to park/visit here now its $10 you do get your pass for a week but it's not worth it if you only can visit the time you came. It has nice views, historic sights and places for cookouts and fishing
Tilly Lo
Beautiful view of George Washington's Mount Vernon across the river. The Fort was well kept and the park was beautiful. There were a lot of deer and I saw several very young ones - too cute! I decided to hike the River Trail. I could find info on how many miles it is. I started from the parking lot by the lighthouse, crossed a small wooden bridge with trees/bushes overgrown into the bridge. It was a little creepy. As I continued on the trail, it just wasn't well kept. Not knowing how much further before I loop back to my car, I turned around and backtracked. The trail didn't look like it had many visitors.
Joe Ignatius
This park was a great find! So under rated because it is so close to DC. I went at sunset and the views of the Potomac were spectacular. I will be coming back again!
TruMari Cooper
Such a great walk very quiet and a lot of old history to explore.
Will Tucker
I was surprised how cool the fort was with beautiful and scenic views...all the doors are open with secret places to explore
F Leigh
Great place to walk and relax near the water. Lots of options to sit out with a blanket, read, and picnic.
Carrie
I love taking my dogs for a walk in this park. There are many places to explore and a bunch of civil war buildings to explore. Some are in disrepair at the moment. It's also free entrance during the winter months.
Matthew Henry
Incredible history and learning. Great for kids, you can explore just about everything.
Matthew DePauw
Such a beautiful, quiet, peaceful place to spend an afternoon. During the day in the week you have the place practically to yourself.
Brandon Renz
This is a great national park. Beautiful scenery. Great history. Wonderful for walking around and appreciating the various attractions.
a.l. rodenberg
A tried and true destination for walking the dog. Me and the other half of Fort Washington.
Michael Manson
Great sunset views, cool fort to explore, friendly staff, nice place for a riverwalk. Good amount of parking
Gloria Roberts-Henry
This was a wonderful experience for me and the family. Beautiful views and the kids had so much fun learning about the history of Ft. Washington.
Len Shafer
Beutiful views and fairly well kept historical site's
Anton Op de Beke
Beautiful view over the Potomac, downstream to Mount Vernon and upstream to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Spacious grounds for walking. Interesting history.
Sean Bain
Great historical landmark and park for families, leisurely dog walks, & fishing.
Nelson Vazquez
Great history, quiet and clean place to take your kids,to learn
Mark Hamilton
Interesting historical site off the beaten path of DC.
Disappointed that the grounds weren't better cared for. To be a national park site, the grass hadn't been cut for over a month. Only 1 park ranger on the grounds. Officer/noncommissioned barracks were locked and unavailable for viewing.

A very nice public park with a fishing pier, multiple picnic areas and various playgrounds. My family had an outdoor bday party there and although we liked it, there were areas of the park that really needed to be cleaned & landscaped from the winter although we went in June. Also, the bathrooms were only opened from 8am-3pm even though the park is opened from dawn til dusk. Regardless, my family & I concluded that it is a very nice park overall.
Joaquin O
Cool park and short distance from DC. Rangers are nice, visitor center remains closed due to the pandemic. Nice walking trails but could use some upgrades or events to boost the experience.
Isabel Mack
Used to live nearby and we would visit daily to walk along the river or on the plateau. Nice playground for little kids near the picnic areas.
The fort is interesting every time we visit although it needs a lot more interpretive signs. Maintenance has suffered due to budget constraints.
Ken Urban
Great views but a smaller park.
Sarah Beaumont
A hidden gem . We had a lovely walk and enjoyed the river.
Mala Dass
A short drive from the national harbour. Free parking. Love the view
Ed Weiser
Really well preserved fort. Almost none restricted access to the entire area
M.E.
Lovely place for an afternoon of enjoying the outdoors while visiting the Historical Fort Washington and soldiers barracks. Includes a Visitors Center abd a short walking path( would love to see more walking paths) I was there to walk along the park with my grandson. Hoping to instill in him to enjoy & reprieve in nature!
Cameron Smith
What an awesome experience!!! Huge fort with several places to visit. Access alowed to most areas. Was also free when we went on 6 Feb.
Joe Ryan
Great place to explore. The kids loved it.
Don Rubin
Lovely park with great views of the Potomac. War of 1812 artifacts.

Historical Landmarks great for families gatherings, exercise or just explore and take in the beauty of it all.
Iriana Cruz
Awesome place! Sunsets here are amazing!
Jennifer Brown
Had so much fun with my family exploring this piece of history
Joe Pika
Awesome national park! It was a lot of fun to explore the old fort. You can walk down to the edge of the potomac, fish along the edge, or sit on a bench. We also had fun playing on a large field by the main visitors center and parking area. Lots of parking and paths as well.
Perry Spring
A really awesome and open historical site that you can bring you dog to! Sid was one of the most knowledgeable volunteers that worked the grounds and we’ll certainly be back when they fire off the cannons on Sundays!
Lee Steinberger
We had a good visit and enjoyed the Park. The National Park Service could do a better job at signage and walking people through the history of the Fort. It would be nice to see the history preserved a bit better.
Nadi Abrar Haque
Amazing views such a serene place
Ron Peay
Love it. Very peaceful. I go there to walk.
Joseph Giammona
Great place for a nice hike amid history.
Luca Gattoni-Celli
My wife found two pairs of kids' boots in the parking lot. Please contact me with a description of the boots.
The Truth
Had a great time. Really cool stuff to see.
Kipplin Carter
Great place to visit. A lot of space and history available to take in. Great views and wildlife to be seen here. This is a good place to take your kids. Decent amount of parking available here. There are some trails here to walk. There is also some pavement here if you want to jog.
Mrs. Richardson
Great place to bring the family for a fun historical walk and beautiful view or alone time for peace and quiet.
Lulu Alleyne
Beautiful. Nice place to visit.
P Dub728
Great place to walk and get fresh air. It’s nice to be able to tour an [open air] historical site especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lovely views of the Potomac River included!
Mary Anne Sneshkoff
A little history. A nice walk. Even a gift shop!

Neat little stop off the path outside of DC and worth the drive.
Maribel Roman Santiago, Ph.D.
Needs tender loving care! This place should be restored. Its a historical jewel, and its story should be preserved. We encourage Maryland's Department of Natural Resources/ Conservation/ and/ or related authorities to write aprposal and save this architectural construction for good!
The place has amazing views, picnic areas, and is near the Marina.
Desmond Pitt
My neighborhood park. I love this place although it may be in the no-fly zone I enjoy flying a drone up here. Just don't go too high but it's a great spot to cross the Potomac right by the lighthouse. Fishing is pretty decent too
MANNY MANUEL LÓPEZ
Great place to finishing an going out with your friends and family.
Dmytro Karataiev
Great place to enjoy sunset in winter.
Frank H
Nice place to walk around and explore the fort or take some of the trails to the battery's or picnic area. There is a very small visitors center staffed by Park Rangers who just seemed ready to go home. No cost to visit in the winter but cannot vouch for the summer. Great views of the Potomac River! Highly recommend if a history buff or just want to hike around and enjoy the outdoors. There is a playground for young children at one of the picnic areas.
Aly Ferguson
Lovely park, under funded. Amazing place to take pictures and see history. Hope this park starts getting the love it needs. Can really see how important, educational and informative this place is. Its just too bad that a lot of things aren't being maintained. A lot of historic landmarks in the park need TLC
Carmen Hunt
I had a good time. This place is very rich in history and best if all it's free.
They got port a potty's.
The normal facilities are closed for obvious reasons I'm sure.
It's on the water and it's a lot of old historical building's.
The grille areas are cool and they have a few benches along the shore line and a light house.
It's not dirty but the shoreline has broke up trees from past storms or whatever .
It's nice though. You can see people boating and jet sking. I almost for got I was in Ft.Washington.
People were fishing there and there's a park ranger onsite.
I liked it alot. Quite and really close to home.
People had their dogs .
Now I didn't see any trails for biking .
Atleast not that I saw.
In fact I saw no one biking but kids.
This is cool if you want to get a taste of the water and the open outdoors. Again, I loved it.
Check out my images. I kinda got carried away.
Michelle Mitton
It's interesting and a pretty view of the National Harbor, though very quiet and not much happening.
Eric Henri
Great place to walk. Nice views, strenuous for kids and easy for older folks. People take care of their animals. We had a great visit and plan to be back with family.
Vlad Gorshkov
Bring your own snacks and blanket. Great views and plenty of space to relax.
Hear Me And Rejoice
Walk access only as of now. Good gracious it was hot the day I went......Bring water.
Covid has allowed me to enjoy peaceful nature and less human track. The scenery was beautiful. The quietness was unreal. I might have seen a total of 14 people.
Haylee Grauel
We really enjoyed our time here. It's a great place to picnic and enjoy being outside. The buildings aren't as well maintained as other historic spots in the area, but it's also much less crowded and touristy. We will likely return to spend more time walking around the grounds.
Chris Taylor
A very nice somewhat secluded park not far from downtown Washington. The fort is well preserved and very interesting to walk through. There is also plenty of parking and green space to walk around. There is separate parking near a path that leads down to the lighthouse and the river. Great views from the fort as well as from the shore near the lighthouse. There are picnic table(s) down by the lighthouse. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well.
Daena Padilla
Truly a hidden gem. Whether looking for a quaint picnic by the lighthouse, a rigorous hike, or some national history (and maybe a ranger badge to go with it!) this park is the place to be. Oh, and don't forget about the great sledding opportunities!
Carolyn Wright
It's an nice park where children can play on the playground and cookout.
Nicholas R
Lack of maintenance on the trails, the history behind it, with no up keep or tours and the left over amount of trash! There are a lot of buildings and forts that do not stand out to see, there can be so much potential here!
Great place for picnic, fishing, open boating access, just pay the yearly fee through the national parks and it worth it cause you can go any national parks. Good for locate running and historic view with recreational parts like tennis or basketball.
The hours fluctuate when they have staff at the gate, there is sometimes a cost to get it in.
Johnny Dollar
Love this park, well Fort. Lots of deer and very nice sunsets. Great for some cycling and running. Fort itself can be visited until 4.30 PM Park itself is from dawn till dusk. Plenty of parking , bathrooms benches etc.
Megan Kelley
Beautiful Historical Site!
Austin Graff
Fort Washington National Park is a historic fort along the Potomac River just a 25-minute drive from SE D.C. Originally George Washington's vision, the original fort was destroyed in the War of 1812. It was rebuilt in 1824 and the main structure still stands after protecting the capitol city in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I. The fort was used as a training facility in World War II. The National Park Services took it over in 1946. Here's why you should go:
1) History: If you have an interest in history, it's worth a visit. The visitor center sets the stage for the historical significance of the fort. As you explore, there are signs that provide more facts. Several rooms are preserved and set up like a museum. At times, there are even period reenactors there to provide additional context.
2) Exploration: Most of the fort is open for exploration and not well kept adding to the mystery. Behind the fort are hobbit hole-like structures that you can venture into. If you drive around the park, stop and explore all the abandoned forts and houses. It's fascinating!
3) Views: The river views of Alexandria and even the National Mall are stunning.
If you're driving back to D.C. afterward, find the local ice cream shop on Yelp on your route.
Lawrence Potts
An important part of our country's history, but in bad shape. It really needs maintenance, restoration and repair. The Park Service does not charge a fee to enter the grounds and that is reflected in the water damage all around, lack of signage at each of the remaining buildings and lack of descriptions of those buildings, but still a must see. The view from the top of the fort is magnificent.
Alysha B
Well kept park lots to do and plenty of open grassy areas if the outdoors is your thing. There is a playground, a place to fish, basketball courts, skating area, plenty of pinic tables. Nice trail to walk or run. They do have a bathroom near the playground which I didnt go in but its there.
Warren Jones
Such an expansive park plenty of room for flying a kite, bicycling or jogging. Free admission after 4pm. The historic fort is very picturesque. Just be careful around the old battery installations, you or your children can be easily injured climbing around these old war structures.
Christian Grand
Managed by the National Park Service, this is a big park that has plenty of hiking and biking. A lovely spot to bring the family and hang out for awhile. The fort is a focal point of the park, much of it restored and original, with placards and intelligent rangers to explain the history.
Fasttrac68
You can walk in out and around the Fort, nothing was closed off and everything was easily accessible. We met up with a park ranger that was giving a small family a tour and we tagged along. Very knowledgeable staff. They are pet friendly as well as long as they remain on a leash. There is a picnic area and several restrooms strategically placed around the park. I recommend stopping by the information center and grabbing a map to plan your adventure as the park is pretty big.
David Alston
This is an actual fort built to protect the Capitol from British naval forces in the early 1800's. It has great views of the Potomac River and Virginia.
Plenty of space to picnic, hike, fish, or just relax.
Kinley Wurl
Beautiful and just the right amount of creepy. Most of the fort itself is very well maintained. The batteries are a little more rough around the edges so just be careful if you decide to take kids or your clumsy friends
HighSteppin 747
Overall I like this park. You can bring the family but there are certain areas of the park that aren’t as kid friendly, so don’t let little ones roam alone. You’ll enjoy the access to multiple trails, historic museum and artifacts, picnic areas and even a light house. My Husband and I go there mainly for walking/jogging. I’ve seen photographers taking pics with models over by the fort gates on one occasion and I’ve had deer walk right pass me on he road on another so...I’d say you just never know with this park! Lol
Alona
Great for day trip.
Elisa Seth
It's a great place to walk, bike, and picnic. There is a playground and plenty of grassy areas. The picnic tables are in groupings under trees and bathroom facilities nearby. As far as historical sightseeing, it's just a few brick structures that you can enter and climb up. There is a small lighthouse and you can stand at the shore.
Walter Holmes
Great for walking and biking. The visitors center is closed Mon - Weds. The Fort was partially closed the day we visited.
Rick Roll
The park is large, full of historical facts, and well preserved for its age. There were park rangers and an actor dressed for the period. The grounds were well maintained but some of the more remote parts had their garbage cans filled to the brim and overflowing with garbage. Additionally, the toilets are closed due to "covid" but the Porta-johns that were provided looked like catching covid would be the least of your worries. On top of that there was no wash station meaning that your filthy hands couldn't be cleaned...even in the bathrooms 10ft away because they were locked.
Other than the toilet and trash can issues I had a great time.
Monique Baha
Scenic clean and recently free of charge
Great walking paths, biking paths, views, offers fishing and walkable historical sites
Matt Reese
Great hidden gem just a few miles from National Harbor. The fort is quite large, much larger then I expected and you can explore quite a bit of the fort as well as other structures on the park grounds.
I came with my wife, and daughters (2 &4) and we enjoyed our time here. There is also a great new playground.
Richard Brown
Really neat fort. Was surprised how large it was and it has a breathtaking view of the Potomac River. However the fort and exhibits in the park are very poorly maintained. Also wish there were more information podiums around. There were some cool buildings that I wanted to know more about but there were no podiums or park rangers around.
Sherlene Carrington
Lovely peaceful place to visit.
Wizie Sanchez
I love fort Washington! Nice cemented road that's easy to walk or jog on. the grounds are very clean. Beautiful view of the water. The place is very relaxing and away from the stress of covid bec of.the wide open space.
sherri fauci
Beautiful park with a lot of things for everyone. Lots of wildlife also and can go fishing or boating. Strongly advise wearing good walking shoes, having water, and snacks or something to eat. If you are into history, you can explore the fort and their is a park guide who can tell you the history of the fort.
Ron Brauer
Had a very good visit here. If it were only open to see more. Walk in and look around. See history!
David Baukman
Beautiful day at the park.
Linda Pinder Walker
I discovered this site, while I was traveling on 301, and followed the signs there, was I impressed, a great place for walking and fishing, I did not fish on the first visit
Frank Fleming
Best kept secret in the area. Great if you want a place for kids to ride bikes away from other cars. The gate is normally closed so the inner streets don't normally have cars on them.
DJ N.FAMUS
Great historical park. You can BBQ and or swim, and site see .
Doug C.
Ft. Washington park is beautiful! I have lived in the DMV since 2008 and have never been there before. Many of the other parks get a lot of traffic but this one doesn't seem to. Our family took our fall/winter family photos and it made for a wonderful back drop. Go with the family or a significant other. Or go by yourself and be at peace.
Wild Man Mountain Jack
A piece of history in the DC area. Well maintained and worth the time. Aside from the fort itself there are a number of picnic areas and a nice hiking trail by the river. Unlike the GW parkway, you can hike beside the river without the constant noise from the cars.
Debbie “Gaga Jane” Gaston
It's not kept up. The lighthouse needs a lot of work
Stephanie Cohen
Nice park, the only downside for me was you have to pay $10 just to get in. I've never been to a park that I had to pay more than a dollar to get in. Also, there aren't lights in the bathroom so on a dark day or evening you will not be able to see well when you go inside. There are also no lights in the park area excluding the parking lot I believe.
Stephen Norbrey
Reserved for a family picnic over memorial day weekend. Plenty of room for everyone!
Alex B.
Fantastic National Park that has so much U.S. history. 250 year old fort that is in unbelievable condition. It's like walking back in time. Grounds are immaculate, never gets crowded and the views, especially of the Potomac River, are incredible. So close to DC and easy to get to.
Car2ner
Large spaces for picnics and outings. Historic grounds well maintained. Hilly walking. You can drive and park on the upper or lower area, although each has it's own entrance. Staff, when you can find them, are very knowledgeable
Blake B.
This park is HUGE and has a ton of old sites to visit. Lots and lots of trails to walk. The large castle-like Fort Washington proper is incredible, with a view from the walls on the hillside which overlooks miles of the Potomac river, all the way to D.C.
The riverside trail is incredibly scenic and peaceful, though it is very long and will probably take an hour to do a loop.
Jeanne-Marie Turniansky
Great view of the Potomac and Woodrow Wilson bridge. The park is a great place for a walk although some of the trails need maintenance. It has an abandoned feel to it and is a great place to learn about civil war history. There are plenty of big Fields to play with your dog as well
Christopher Pece
Nice historic fort, but you can see how the Park Service needs some appropriations for repairs. The Junior Ranger program is pretty good to help kids explore the fort and natural surroundings. Pick up the booklet at the visitor center when you arrive.
Alwilter Wilson
Went to get our National Parks Lifetime Senior Pass(62+). It's currently $10.00 and I hear that the cost is going up soon. When we went, we had to go to the Visitor Center. A little hike from the parking lot. I was told that there is a way to drive closer for drop-off if you call ahead. Beautiful view across the Potomac River. An informative video about Fort Washington can be seen at the center.
Petra Holden
Not for small children, this sprawling National Park Service complex of battery ruins, garrison lodging, and concrete embankments is a fascinating window into the history of defending America from 1800 through 1940. The grounds are flat-out dangerous for small children, however - there's 20-foot drops everywhere, with limited signage or guard rails. The vista of the Potomac River is fantastic and is itself worth the trip. There's a small visitor center with souvenirs but no food or drinks. If you're a history buff, this is a must-visit.
David Hill
This is a nice Fort with a lot of history but it is in a sad shape of disrepair. The grounds around the fort are well maintained but inside the fort there are saplings and ivy starting to overtake walls and steps. Each Battery outside the fort is in worse shape. When I compare it to other forts I have visited in the past, like Fort Pulaski in Savannah, GA, it seems like the National Park service is going to let this Fort fall apart. Maybe they had a reduction in maintenance staff or something. I'm not sure, but it definitely shows.
Jess Berndt
Fort Washington Park is a great place to go for a walk or run, with or without your dog. There's a fishing area on the Potomac. The view over the river is spectacular, in the summer there should be all manor of boat traffic going by too. Worth a visit with or without kids.
mary beth rodriguez
Great artillery demonstration today!! The volunteers were very knowledgeable.
Walter Hatcher
Been here all of my life and never knew about this part of the park. Very nice!
Nathan Scott
Visitor's center was closed due to the pandemic, but all of the outdoor areas were open. It is an interesting historic fort that saw service through several wars spanning from the War of 1812 through World War II.
Jennifer Herrmann
Great park with an interesting historic fort and also lovely views of the Potomac River! Great learning experience and friendly, helpful staff!
Amy Rahhal
Great destination. I learned a lot about the history behind it.
It cost $10 per car to get in. The facilities are not functioning, water fountains dont work, bathrooms seemed abandoned where garbage and dirt are all over the floors.
I feel that if this location is not offering useful facilities and is not maintained as it should be, we shouldn't have to pay entry fees!! Its not justified!
Mike Keegan
We love visiting Fort Washington. It has a great historic significance. They maintain the property very well. The do live demonstrations of artillery!! Cannons and muskets wow'ed the kids. Come for an exhibit, a nature/history walk, or a picnic.
Renee Johnson
I've been coming here all my life. The views are amazing here. The landscaping could use some work.
Cristianna Nelson
Loved going to see this place was amazing how expansive it was right on the water. It immerses you when you see places like this of what it was like back then. It makes you appreciate the sacrifices people made. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and appreciate history great place to check out.
Quinn B
A great place to go learn about the history of coastal artillery on the Potomac. I went on a weekday morning in November and had the place virtually to myself. This place is huge, with lots to see from several different eras. Great views of the Potomac all the way to DC in the distance.
Gerson Gomez
Great for catfishing..
Ron Costigan
Great place to visit. Awesome views. No admission $$.
Dean Woods
Beautiful scenery. The fort was in great shape. The grass in the surrounding areas was very well kept. The lighthouse adds great ambiance to the overall landscape.
Geneva Eiland
It’s so relaxing! I’ve been going since I was a child! I love to go to clear my mind. Sometimes they charge $10 for entry and you’re allowed to return up to three days after purchase free with your receipt.
C Warren
Great environment to walk, jog or run ... plenty of trails, trees, animals and scenic sites so you could really decompress. I like to listen to various business or motivational podcasts or simply think, clear my mind and self reflect about the day.
Pandora Pauls
The surrounding where magnificent. The picnic areas need new barbecue pits or bring your own portable one and the grass needed cutting.,...
.
Kevin Taylor
Cool to see some of the history and walk around both at the fort and down at the light house.
John Lane
Amazing piece of history! You can go inside nearly everything and explore. Rangers will explain everything about everything if you have the time. The grounds are also a great recreational area.
Thank you Rangers!
PGC
This place is peaceful and relaxing. The park rangers are helpful and kind. There are several locations to enjoy. I like walking and exploring the park.
Juan J Romero
We walked and walked cause is officially close for cars but anybody can get in on foot I'll wait for to be officially open after this covid 19 goes away
Kevin Baillie
Awesome view. Just missed the fort as it closed at 430. Porta John in the parking lot was undesirable but! An awesome place to visit nonetheless
Alice Wang
On a simmering summer day, my boyfriend and I were driving along GW Parkway when we stopped at an overlook and saw Fort Washington across the river. Neither of us knew there was a fort so close to DC, and we decided to venture over to Maryland to check it out.
Fort Washington was the only permanent fortification built to defend the river approach to DC. It was destroyed by its own garrison in the War of 1812 to prevent the British from capturing and occupying it, and the fort was rebuilt 10 years later. Now it's one of the few seacoast forts in its original design.
You can walk around the historic fort and the visitor center. The views are spectacular from the top, as you can see the Potomac River, the Wilson Bridge, and some of DC. There is also 3-mile trail that follows the perimeter of the park. There's quite the deer population in the park, and I actually saw a family of them on the way out. There are also groundhogs, turtles, and birds roaming around. In front of the fort is Fort Washington Lighthouse, which is actually still in use today. Each year the Chesapeake Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society host the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge and the interior of the lighthouse is opened up to visitors. There are also historic reenactments at the fort, like artillery demos, which give you a more-in-depth glimpse into Fort Washington's history.
After visiting the fort, a lot of folks will picnic in the park. You can reserve picnic areas online or by phone. You can also go fishing by the water. All in all, it's a relatively unknown historic area with fantastic views of the Potomac, trails for walking/running, and picnic areas for gatherings.
$5 per vehicle for a 3-day pass or $20 annual pass. Great spot for history buffs!
Lynn Reich
Beautiful park with a history bonus. Enjoyed the river trail especially. Would like to come back in the warmer weather and see some of the living history programs.
Anne Schumann
Really great place to spend the day. Historic fort and gun batteries to explore, playground, fishing, shaded picnic tables, lots of open fields and great paved bike trails.
A Lessani
Nice flexible hike
annalisa cook
Great place to enjoy family time and getting fresh air while you run, walk, bike, boat, fly a kite or just sit and have a picnic near the beautiful lake view.
William Herring
I love this place, you can fish see awesome views of the water as well as your the fort for yourself, mind blowing, the fort closes at 4:30pm. A great place to take the family and that special someone.
David Dobson
Cool old fort for exploring. Large park. Too cold today but good time despite.
Mike Lumer
Great historical location that doesn't get inundated with normal DC landmark foot traffic. Kids brought their bikes too! Even got to witness a marriage proposal on the beach, poor kids. ;-)
Breck Reitter
This is a gorgeous park with great views and sweeping open grass areas. The historical forts are really awesome to explore. Newer playgrounds and lots of deer at dusk!
Maia Rodriguez
Military gets in free. All others bring some cash. This is a great little hidden gem off 210. An actual fort built in the early 1800's and used to defend Washington DC from invading ships, it was one abandoned and DC was overtaken for a while before it was reclaimed by the Americans. Tons of exploring options are available. There's also places to picnic and play sports.
K Keppley
Great place to visit, bring a picnic, and spend the day outside. It is unfortunate that the historical buildings themselves are not restored and appear to be crumbling.
Jerry Griffis
This park needs funds bad. The fort is pretty amazing but it needs work. Could use more picnic benches. I love the NPS sites but you can tell which ones get funding and this is not one of them.
Jeff Stilwell
Amazing history, with fantastic views of the potomac from the ramparts. A claustrophobia inducing holding cell wad a highlight. As was the gopher and beaver spotting. Many great echo opportunities for the 3 yrs old.
Gloria Constant
This is my favorite park to walk. Maybe because its off season but it's quiet, beautifully maintained, and has clean bathroom facilities. Plus you get a view of the Potomac.
Jason Axley
Great park, lots of history, dog friendly
Patricia Wassall
Beautiful park. A great place to spend the day. While no actual battles were fought here, the tour of the fort we were given by Michael was fantastic.
Robin Lindblad
Beautiful area. It would be a great place to picnic or ride bikes. Lots of great historical information.
Jed Watkins
I REALLY enjoyed visiting Ft. Washington. I had seen it on the other side of the river for years and had always been curious about it. I had no idea about its history and was pleasantly surprised to learn about thia unique American fortress. It is beautiful, interesting, and picturesque; a photographers dream. It makes a great 1/2 day trip for those wanting to get out of DC or a whole day adventure when combined with other attractions in the Ft. Washington area. I with hold the 5th star because i think the National Park Service could do a little better job with providing an interpretation of the site and history, revitalize the signage, and explore a public/private partnership that could really improve the park, its visitation, and the secondary benefits to the local area.
Sean Gaetjen
One of my favorite parks. Quiet, great views, nice trail for hiking. The place is like a castle, too, which makes it even cooler.
I D
Kind of deserted, non-functional toilets.
Bill R
Historic gem worth visiting. Great spot for a picnic or walk by the water. Highly recommend.
Kojack1863 (Kojack)
Fort Washington National park is excellent. At least three miles of walking trail. Outstanding view of the Potomac river. The fort is is a very good historical landmark. Park fee booth wasn't open. Season not started. Because of this, very limited crowd. Visitor center was open. Right minute movie available on the history of the fort. Small lighthouse at the river bank. Fishing is allowed. Highly recommended for history buffs.
Tracey Cones Renshaw
So cool...you get to actually get to stand so close if not 8n the artillery firing positions and see what the artillery commanders may have seen when creating the defense plan. The military history you learn about even on a self guided tour is so amazing. It's a physically enjoyable hike climbing the mounds that cover the munitions bunkers. My husband and I fished there in the morning, had a picnic lunch, hiked through the historical structures and learned a whole new side of US milotary history. Its a great plce for photo shoots. I wish we had included This place in our wedding album.
Tiffany Ferrari
Beautiful spot to walk, sightsee, read about history. Dog friendly. Right on the water. Fon photo spot.
Donalia Clay
Love bringing out of town visitors here! We never get enough of the view of the Potomac river from the top of the Fort. The stables, the cellars, the barracks, the jail...it makes history breathe.
Steve Finley
Interesting history and towering structures from the fort. Easy to wander around and explore the different parts. Also a great view of the river.
Barb Gausman
Edgerton High School, Edgerton, Wisconsin has been bringing our senior class to this park, as part of their Senior Class Trip to Washington, DC for over 20 years. The park provides respite from the busy city and allows the students a chance to explore the fort, participate in outdoor activities (kickball, soccer, softball), and enjoy a picnic. The park staff, especially Bambi, have been awesome hosts in accommodating our needs during the off-season visit!
Denia Massetti
Clean and historical
Kay Martz
I love it 😀😍
I didn't know that this place exist ,we went there by accident looking for another place, I was so impressed with the fort Washington park, so beautiful 😍 …
Rick Pohlsander
One of the coolest forts you'll ever visit. There are lots of batteries about the Park as well. Super fun to explore.
Isaiah Patillo
Amazing neighborhood park adjacent to the affluent Tantallon. Great for picnics, and other recreational activities.
Steve Markos (National Park Planner)
I am a writer and photographer for National Park Planner and I visited Fort Washington Park in May 2016. The park is located in Fort Washington, Maryland, just south of Alexandria on the Potomac River. It preserves the site of a brick fort that was constructed between 1814 and 1824, plus a number of concrete artillery batteries built in the 1890s. The fort is open to the public for self-exploration, and Ranger-guided tours are given throughout the year, though the schedule varies per season. A few of the batteries are also open, though some require a hike to reach.
Fort Washington Park was actually created by Congress in 1930 for the purpose of becoming the terminus for the George Washington Parkway, but that never happened. No public grounds were available until after World War II. Throughout the 1930s the fort and grounds were used as housing for the 12th Infantry, the honor guard for Washington D. C. It wasn’t until 1939 that the fort was turned over to the Department of Interior, but it was pressed back into action during World War II. After the war it was decommissioned for good and transferred back to the National Park Service, at which time the grounds were opened to the public. Since 1965, Fort Washington Park has been a unit of the National Capital Parks-East, a collection of National Park properties extending from the US Capitol to the suburbs of Maryland.
While the park draws tourists coming to the Washington D. C. area who are interested in history, the large majority of visitors each year are local residents who use the park for recreational activities. Only a small percentage of visitors ever set foot in Fort Washington. By far the most popular activity is picnicking, and the park is home to eight large picnic areas that accommodate more than 100,000 people each year who come for family reunions, corporate outings, and church functions. A survey showed that most people think of Fort Washington Park only as a picnic facility and don’t even know that it is part of the National Park system or that it is significant to the history of the United States.
Other recreational activities include hiking, biking, and fishing. There are also a number of large, nondescript fields throughout the park that are open to field sports of any type—soccer, softball, volleyball, football, etc. No need to reserve them; if they are open, start playing. At nearly 350 acres, Fort Washington Park is one of the largest public green spaces in Prince George’s County.
For complete information about visiting Fort Washington Park and plenty of photos, see National Park Planner (npplan).

This park is everything! The view, the peace, the location. I love this place. I come here to think. It’s never crowded. Perfect
Rachel Ziemba
Beautiful park, well maintained. Plenty of open space. Nicely preserved historic buildings.
Sariah Hansen
I was really excited to come here since i hadn't heard much about Fort Washington while some of the fort and buildings are in good condition I was completely disappointed at the destruction and disrepair of much of the fort I really hope the NPS step up repairs to preserve this place
Hassan Abdullah
Beautiful park however they charge 10 bucks just to enter it. That becomes difficult when you have a lot of people coming to a BBQ or picnic and they all have to pay to get in there.
Tenea Nance
This is a gem that I just discovered, I took beautiful pictures that I am super excited about. Plan to go back for a sip and paint with my girls in the park.
Rob Young
Went here for the canon demonstration as well. Very knowledgeable folks who did the presentation. Not only about the canons but the fort/area/history as well. Some areas are in disrepair so watch kids, some areas dangerous for small ones
Tony Kelley
Great place to visit. Just wish the old buildings were open
Tom Koppel
Great place to go to get the jr. ranger badge for the kids and it's interesting for adults too. Give it 2 hours.
Nola Iden
It would have been nice if there was a trail map or something when you get there, and signs off the trails themselves telling you distance and destination. We wandered around, came across some HUGE old guns that were awesome, but were really confused about all the other war relics and random diagrams around. It looks almost completely overgrown and unkept. The trail down to the water has a neat old building of some sort (no signs of what it was of course) and Im pretty sure homeless people live there. There is broken glass and trash all over the place. Maybe neat for photographers but dont take your family here, its a bit creepy. Such a shame to loose this place to nature...Maryland.
Stephanie Shinkle
Very peaceful, evokes the past, and illuminates the purposes our country was prepared to defend to ensure our rights and liberty
Josh W
This is a gorgeous park packed with history. The park stays open until 6p but the fort and bookstore/museum close at 4:30p

Fort Washington is an excellent adaptation during war time. Hidden cannons, multiple levels of masonry and wood structures, concrete, lighthouse and many other secrets among the grounds. This is a well suited and placed Fort that would have scared the lunch out of any nemesis' buttocks. By the time a cannon would have fired at an enemy ship, it would have been too late to turn back and retreat from the Potomac to the Atlantic Ocean. I'd consider providing the NPS with pro-bono conservation/ preservation design services to maintain the existing structures should they find the repair finances to remediate the long-standing degredation on these grounds. It is in need of much TLC but don't let this deter you from visiting this 8th wonder of the US.
Justin Williams
Lots of fun for short walks and bike rides. Very steep walk up to the Fort if you take the road down to the lighthouse.
Elacir camargo

I hiked the "Piscataway Creek Trail" from the Pine Road trailhead to the L'Enfant Connection. As of 30 August 2014, the trail is undeveloped and largely unmarked. Use a GPS with tracking to trace your route and avoid briars on your return (I used Google Maps and BackCountry Navigator Android app). The trailhead off Pine Road is overgrown but path is marked by blue blazes inside the woods. The blazes end and requires some path finding, then bushwacking downhill toward the river where the path along the river is easy to follow. The stream valley is mostly deer trail and sewer line markers, then cross the stream over logs. There were scattered car tires, animal bones, and an abandoned golf cart near the L'Enfant Connection. Mostly deer trail at this point. I turned around when I encountered a snake in the undergrowth that I did not want to disturb. Usual spider webs and chiggers for this time of year.
Joshua Otero
Another great park to see in Maryland especially in off season when there is no charge and you can drive relatively close to a few of the scenic areas if you aren't able to walk far.
Theodore “Cowboy” Ranger
Didn't go inside the fort before it is pretty big but it's a good place to go fishing if you want to catch catfish
