Reviews of Hawn State Park
Tyson Pyle
Wonderful experience. Did a back country camp at site 3. Quaint, quiet and well off the main trail. The campsite is at the confluence of two small creeks with small, splashing waterfalls and pools. FYI, the Red trail does have you fording pickle creek, and if in the spring time, will leave you with very wet boots, if not your shorts. But that's awesome so who cares.
Andrew Karandjeff
My favorite MO state park. Awesome trails, great camping. It’s amazing to be out on the trail and hear the pines in the wind. There’s some incredible rock formations given where the park sits in relation to the glaciers ages ago. I hope they develop the east side of the park at some point, but in a way that maintains the rugged beauty

Beautiful camp site and hiking trails. We personally got the walk-in campsite where we can just set up a camp/hammocks. It has a nice little fire pit with a grill as well as a table with bench. There is bathrooms if needed as well as a wash area if needed.
There is the option to have a drive in for larger campers to go glamping. But I can’t really speak on that end except that it seems spacious and clean and I believe some plugs for electricity.
As for the hiking trails, there are two options one short and one long. Both are really beautiful and the longer one is walking distance from the camp. Either way, very beautiful and it is nice because the scenery and trail changes a bit so it doesn’t get boring.
Friendly camp host as well and friendly neighbors. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a campsite for any level.

Very pretty stream. Quiet trails, but can get dense at times. You can take a few different trails in the park, and each trail is marked on the trees or signs along the way. I gave it 4 stars because the trails aren't wide and you have to walk through overgrown weeds and bush. If you don't mind that, then this will be super enjoyable for you. I love how quiet it is when you're on the trail. I've been here twice and both times it felt like we were the only ones on the trail.
Steven Trankler
I hiked both the North and South loop of the Whispering Pines trail in about 7 hours. I stopped for lunch and many other times along the way. It's a beautiful place and wonderful experience but it is also 10 miles of up and down rugged trail in most places. Completely worth the time and effort, but please be prepared.

Missouri state park! Early January , practically empty. No running water or fancy shower house. But had electricity and
nice big spaced out camp sites. Lots of beautiful trees! Good hiking trails!!
Carissa Lyle
Love this trail! It is so pretty in the fall. Normally do the shorter trail (takes us 1.5 hours) which is relatively easy. Bring your dog too. After you’re done here head over to Charleville Winery to reward yourself after the long hike.

Hawn State Park was absolutely marvelous! I went there with my friend the other day, walking around and seeing and listening to the beautiful creek, being able to just exist in the moment, smell the fresh air was amazing! I cant wait to go again, i really hope to come here again during the summer!
Jennifer Bates
Fun area to camp. The campground was clean and spots are concrete which is nice . Scenic trails were fun. Bath house was clean.
Kristy LaRose
A beautiful location with a well managed quiet campground and amazing hiking trails - some of the best in Missouri. It's a geologist's dream with outcrops of sedimentary and igneous rocks and clear sandy-bottom streams. A must visit with breathtaking giant shortleaf pines that are found natively throughout the nearly 5000 acre park.

Four stars is a bit strong, but I liked the spacious private showers, although not all have a bench and each one is push-button timed out at 1 MINUTE. C'mon people, who takes a shower in just 60 seconds (it takes that long for the water just to warm up enough)! At least there's no restriction on cycles and no fee required. BTW, you have NO control over water temp.
The route in is a scenic, winding and hilly drive that deposits you into a low-lying pine forest miles from civilization, with sketchy cellphone/internet service. The only amenity is a simple kid's playground. The concrete sites are roomy, but not installed to drain rain water. And the campground roads are paved (^5).
Eric Devenbaugh
The picnic area was pretty nice with a small little playground. The trail was nice was not for little kids in my opinion. The creek has lots of slippery rocks. We saw some cool lizards with bright blue tails. The campground looks really good and maintained.

I arrived at around 6pm without a reservation. Found the host couple and they quickly got me a site. They were very helpful and knowledgeable. The camp site was wonderful. This park has clean showers and restrooms. During my one day stay I saw several deer, a turkey, and 2 turtles. The whippoorwills did wake me up at 5am but I love the sound of nature. I only had time for one trail and it was a good one. A bit challenging at times but I highly recommend the “Pickle Creek Trail”, it was beautiful. This place is a bit out of the way but worth the stay. Note this park is remote and most spots have no cell service, great place to disconnect and relax.
Kevin Gerstenecker
We loved the park itself. Beautiful hiking trails and scenery. Many camp spots are better suited for smaller campers. We camped with our 32' 5th wheel, and there were only a few sites that would accomodate both camper and truck.
All sites have 12' wide, level concrete pad. But, as was our site, the pad was surrounded by dirt, with another concrete pad for the picnic table. The picnic table is chained down, so it cannot be moved. Our steps led to the dirt, which turned to mud after an extended period of very heavy rain. The park staff should consider adding gravel to these areas, which would be such a welcome addition. After the rain turned the surrounding area to mud, we had nowhere to sit and enjoy the outside. We left early because more rain was predicted, and I can sit inside at home. We don't camp to sit inside.
I would say roughly half of the sites have at least partial shade.
The shower house was very nice. Clean, and good water temp. Restrooms were also very nice and well kept. There are a few sites with larger concrete pads that would be far more wet weather friendly. We plan to return in the spring during cooler weather, do we can explore more trails and scenery.

We camped in an RV in this very picturesque state park. There was lots of beautiul pine trees on most of the RV sites. There was a lovely babbling brook right behind us, but there was also thousands of biting flies ... that eventually ran us off. We left a day early as it was just too prevalent. The one safety concern ( that also made us leave early) was the big drop off at most of the concrete pads...even at the handicapped site. This is a dangerous trip and fall hazard that should not be. The hosts and the office were great. Wood is sold on site. The wifi was accessible from the parking lot by the office ( which is far from the campsites). But, our T-mobile phone had service ( sometimes).
Michael
This is my favorite state park in all of Missouri. It has the best hiking in Missouri. We love the Pickle Creek Trail.
Rohn Beardsley
My Daughter and I loved Hawn, especially Pickle Creek. We spent a whole day exploring (first time here) and plan on coming back and camping in the future.
Patti Feldt
This place is beautiful! Hiked the Whispering Pines trail (north and south loops), and the Pickle Creek trail! All of it is awesome! Absolutely love all of the water features too!!!
Corey Twardoski
Easily one of the best hikes in MO. The fall colors made it even more breathtaking this last time around. I would recommend getting on the trail as early as possible, as this is one of the most popular hikes in the state.
Day June
Came here with my dog for a night getaway - park was almost empty. There was a very heavy fog in the.morning and it made for a wonderful spooky hike. Enjoyed it alot.
Ozark Hills Rider
This was an Amazing Park. We were there for the trails, and was not disappoint. The Pickle Creek trail, rated rugged, was true to it's rating. Every trail was unique in its own way. And with the leaves, just starting to turn, was abselutely beautiful.
Old School
Pickle Springs Trail is probably one of my most favorite trails EVER. I just love Hawn State Park especially when the azaleas are in full bloom.
Matt Alvino
Awesome state park that is just far enough off the beaten path to make it feel remote. No lodging and the campground is pretty well hidden away.
The major trails usually have a vault toilet. There is a large playground and pavilion by the Pickle Creek and Whispering Pine trails that also has water fountains.
All the hiking has been type notch in my experience.
RICK ETTERLING
Nice park. The pickle creek trail is very hazardous. Beware of the jagged rocks. Can be slippery with sand on your shoes. The water is fun
Lots of places to get in.
Seth Lindsey
I haven't been to every park within an hour of St. Louis, but I'll bet you'd be hard pressed to find one equally amazing. After walking down the trail for a few minutes, then stopping briefly, the complete lack of background noise was overwhelming. No traffic. No sirens. No screaming kids. Just absolute silence (when the dog wasn't panting).
The auditory senses isn't the only one that will love Hawn. There are plenty of visuals that pair well, making this well worth the drive!
Michelle Dicken
So much more beautiful and peaceful than I remembered! Several hiking trails that take you with along side Pickle Creek or to Pickle Creek. The creek is spring fed and filled with granite. Tons of perfect photo op places around the creek and by the bluffs! There are trails that you can hike back to primitive campsites... no fire allowed inside park grounds except for in grills though. There's a playground for kids and a huge pavilion for large group parties. Also more private spots with picnic tables for romantic picnics. The only downside I saw in the park were the restrooms. More porta potties with a shelter... extremely dirty. Now that federal areas have transgender restrooms, it seems like it's hard to find a facility that doesn't have urine in places that urine doesn't belong! Urine in corners and around the sinks in both facilities. Hawn State Park is not an exception to the gross restroom probability. Yuk. There were better odds that I might find a clean restroom back when I didn't have to share my facility with males who don't know how to aim toward the toilet. Other than the restroom though.... this is a beautiful park! We can't wait to do another long hike!
Robyn Mikusch
So beautiful, shaded, love being by the creek. I love our Missouri State Parks! They are very well manetained. They have very Family friendly rules. We look forward to going there every year.
Devin Wall
Great destination for short backpacking trips.
Michael Frodyma
Without a doubt, one of my most favorite places in eastern Missouri to hike. Taking the whispering Pines Trail on either the northern or southern loops provides for a great long hike and some pretty incredible views. There is a decent amount of elevation gain so snacks and water are a definite plus to pack.
Rebecca Jones
Such a beautiful park!! The trails are simply gorgeous, and everything is so clean and well-kept. I loved the river especially. I went with a friend, and we both really enjoyed the trip.
Molly Ellis
One of the most beautiful places in Missouri. The Whispering Pines Trail rivals any trail you'd find out west, although it's a lower elevation and there aren't huge mountains, but that's it. There is varied terrain and elevation changes, never a dull moment. Beautiful at every time of the year! These pics were taken mid-December.

This campground is really special. The spots are flat and shaded, the creek that runs through is charming, and the showers are amazing. I intent to come back many times!
michael crutcher
Excellent Missouri State Park. Convenient to St Louis Metro. We’ve camped here and hiked quite often. Pickle Creek trail (TH near picnic/playground area) is a nice, short, up and back trail (1.4 mi total) that takes about an hour to walk. Not very strenuous. Traverses along the creek. Be sure to hike all the way up the creek to where it opens up with more exposed rock. Although every time we’ve gone the creek is flowing, going in the spring or after recent rainfall increases the water flow and scenery. Enjoy.
Dave Manegre
Beautiful place! 3 great hiking places nearby...
Pickle Springs! (7.7 miles away(see pic for map...google maps first choice is is wrong as road is closed south on dorlac rd and Hawn rd is rock.. use Hwy 32 to AA)
Hickory Canyon! . 9.8miles (see pic)...
Pickle Creek (in park, walk to)

My wife and I have had 2 great overnight hikes here. The Backcountry campsites are great and they are spaced apart well. I would definitely stick to these campsites since more traffic can mean less critters you don't like (such as black widows)–in my experience, other flattened out spots off trail may be deer laying spots or home of many composting bugs. Creeks run throughout the loops. Lots of birds, turtles, skinks, and small fish to keep you company! Trails are very well marked and visible. I know of one dog being bit by a poisonous snake so just be a little watchful around waters. This is a go to trail for getting your feet wet for backpacking. Trails are marked as difficult because of occasional rockiness and steep grade (very doable).
Tony Sax
Pickle Creek: A short low-incline rocky trail along a cool stream.
White Oaks: A casual stroll through the woods.
Whispering Pine: Steep elevation, gets above Pickle Creek and can see the tops of trees.
3 stars because there are better parks in Missouri, some trailheads don't have maps of the trails, and signs along the trails don't state how much further you have to go.
Tj Gilmor
Need to get away and will be there tomorrow. Hiking Hawn for 30 yrs, treated it like my little known personal escape. It's better known now, and for good reason. One of my favorite day hike areas in MO. 1,3, & 6-13 mile options.
Don't miss out on Pickle Creek Rec Area as well (11 miles further west on 32), unique easy family hike with fun limestone formations to climb on.
"Happy Painting, and God Bless!" 😉

It was awesome, weather was nice when we got there. Half way through our hike we experienced pop up storms with hail and high winds. Lasted about 30 minutes. Trail was pretty much a creek. Other than that thing we're good 😊 very much recommend for hiking …
Alissa Podgorny
Hawn State Park is very nice pretty! We booked RV site #19. It was across from the playground and close to the shower house. Ot has a huge empty area with no neighbors on the side. It had laundry machines and a sink to do dishes. The creek was directly behind us and we could walk across the stones to explore it. Host was very nice. Electric was at the site and we filled with water on site before getting to our site. Dump station was wide enough on the way out. Shower was large, but shared with a wasp. Overall we loved it there!
Valerie Wiese
We loved hiking along pickle springs but our dogs got 8 to 10 ticks even though we had them treated with topical and oral medication. Put a damper on our experience
Torie Lynne Lumsden Null
Pickle Creek inside Hahn Park was a moderate Rocky trail. We enjoyed every bit of it and no ticks!
Barry G
The hiked the White Oaks Trail which was about 4 miles. Not a bad trail some elevation changes. Wear long pants for this one as the trail on the back 1.8 miles has a lot of overgrowth the covers the trail. The trail is well marked but that portion of the trail needs some trimming. The first half of the trail is pretty rocky so watch your step. Overall not a bad trail but nothing great either.
Mark T
I really enjoy this park. Nice trails where you can stretch your legs with few scenic spots. Not as crowded as nearby Pickle Springs and only a little less scenic
Micah Usher
Beautiful hiking with varied terrain, babbling brooks, tall trees looked like some great hike in camping spots. Not very difficult (for an experienced hiker) but scenic, serene and fun!
Nick Martin
Seems pretty small. There were trails but they were not readily visible. Kind of a far drive. No cell signal.
Andy Roose
Hiked White Oak Trail in winter (35 degrees), just me and the trees. Trail is well traveled and marked! Lots of creek crossings. Beautiful area!!
Dan Buettner
One of the nicest Missouri State Parks. Well kept and maintained. Excellent campsites and great trails for either day hikes or backpacking
Jared Fryman
Marked really well and has trails that you can hike for a short time or all day. Great camp ground also.
Mike Mudd
Great weather for a fall campout. Very popular state park to camp and hike.

I love it here. We've been twice in a month; once for a day hike, and once for an overnight backpacking trip with our 4 year old. There are plenty of day hikes to do, you can backpack on Whispering Pines Trail, and you do not have to stay in an established site as long as you stay a distance off the trail and away from the water (no campfires if it's not an established site). It's clean; I saw very minimal trash (aluminum foil in a fire pit). And there are no fees to backpack or use day use areas. I'm giving it one star off because the Ranger Station was.closed both times, and some of the trails are really, really busy. We made the mistake of taking our slightly aggressive dog with us to try to get him accustomed to hiking and being around people thinking wed see just a few people (it was cold!). It was super busy, even on a cold day. We will return! Just not with the dog ;)
Dustin Schwartz
First time here and we loved it. The host was great and the kids had a blast. Doesnt get much better than camping creekside!
Pete Powell
great location for a getaway from the rush of daily life, be sure to enjoy and unwind on the Whispering Pines trail plus take in the beauty of Pickle Creek and the LaMotte Sandstone Barrens.
adkwildman barkeater
Pretty cool place, not many people visit, I'm guessing from the oppressive heat and humidity levels- go in the fall or winter to experience a different kind of park- be on the lookout for caves, grottos and cliffs! Really cool hidden gem in southeast Missouri!
Dave Hoang
GREAT spot for a family camping trip. Facilities are clean, trails are beautiful. Easy peasy
Gene S
What everyone else says, fantastic hikers paradise I love it
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE; Last season our car was vandalized at Pickle Springs MDC nearby, this early spring it happened again at Hawn near Pickle Creek trail. Both times I was parked in Reserve Parking, I have a permit. Some people in the area apparently seem to be passing judgement. Please be aware because you can't defend your property if you are away and hiking? I suggest avoid using it here or at Pickle Springs, you just don't know when this could happen?
Chris Davis
Beautiful Park. Great place to hike, explore and in my case, drive a smallish RC truck. I didn't camp, but it's available and looks good. I really hope the planned silica/sand mine for this region gets stopped before a great natural area is destroyed!
AmericanColonial Painting
Hawn State Park is a beautiful and secluded park outside of Sainte Genevieve, MO. They offer scenic trails, picnic areas with grills, a playground, and a campground. Definitely recommend this State Park!
Michael Mittermeyer
Beautiful park. Get there early on the weekends if you want a parking spot!
Rob
Great park to go hiking in. The Green trail takes you along the river/creek for about 3/4 mile. Be sure to wear your hiking boots.
ORENDAencompassing Life Doula/Coach
A place worth driving 1.5 hours for this agoraphobic to travel alone with four kids under 8!!!! That says ALOT! GO! If you need to escape the walls the pandemic drowns you in...GO HERE!
Ariel L
Absolutely love it. Came over the weekend, and everyone left Sunday so we have the space to ourselves. The rangers are absolutely wonderful, polite and helpful. Unfortunately we are getting rain from hurricane berry so we cant enjoy to much today. 10/10!
Scott Shewmaker
Beautiful hike, with about 15 miles of trails to enjoy. Southern spur off the Whispering Pines trail has one of my favorite spots, with a sandy bar, lush mosses, dripping cliffs and boulders.
robby portugal
Great views and trails were great, but they were wet. Not crowded on the trails
Paul Furrer
We've been to Hawn State Park three times, and it's an awesome place to chill and enjoy nature. Neither Lacey nor I can walk very far, so we stayed pretty close to the parking lot, but Lacey got to cool off in the creek. I'd love for us to be able to see more of the park, but we've thoroughly enjoyed every single visit! Great park with awesome views, a nice playground in the picnic area, and camp sites.
Sherri sickels
This place was gorgeous, the trail was fun, and wildlife everywhere
Brandon Watson
Only went down 1 trail. I can't tell they do much to enhance the hiking experience, but I didn't have any issues, so nothing to complain about. Pretty scenery, clean restroom, explanatory maps.
Gary Flynn
I enjoy the peacefulness of this Missouri State Park. Great clean campgrounds and nice hiking trails. The only improvement needed is parking needs expanded at the picnicking area. It fills up quickly.
Jake Michael
One of the most beautiful and best hikes in Missouri. North loop is 6 miles. South loop is around the same. Total of 12 miles. Also has the white oak trail that has connector 1 and 2 to take you to the backside of north trail. If you start north trail first you will need to cross pickle creek 2 times. One spot is tuff to cross without help or getting feet wet. If you use the white oak trail to cut to the back of the north loop you will not need yo cross water but will be missing out on the more beautiful parts of the trail. Also has 10 camping sites along trail that are self check in.
Liz Rule
The north loop is a favorite of ours. It's beautiful hike any time of year.
Alan Harp
This is one of me and my spouses favorite places to hike. The trails are challenging but well-maintained. This is an absolutely beautiful park.
Garrett Kidd
Very nice park - did not have a chance to explore their hiking or backpacking trails, but the campsites were very easily accessible (paved roads throughout) and had adequate (if not a little on the small side) space on each campsite. Our site was next to the water, with hidden access, so we had a private waterside nook for chilling in the shade.
Ron Howell
Pickle Creek to whispering pines loop. The best 2 mile hike around!
Katherine “Kit Kat” Haarmann
Amazing scenery and great family outing adventurous place to go on nature hikes
Jennifer rogers
Beautiful views but the trails could be cleaned up a bit.
john capuano
The best state park in Missouri. A great day trip or overnight in the woods. Wear study shoes if you're going to Pickle Springs.
Good Game
Beauty and Peace. The backpacking camps were welcoming, large, and well kept.
Angela Michelle
We spent an amazing weekend at Hawn State Park among the towering pines, falling leaves and challenging trails 11.6-11.8.2020! A quiet but bustling park for sure, especially with the exceptional fall weather! First time with only electric hook-up, but all went great — was still able to take my nightly shower! After 10/31, water spigot to fill tank is located at host site 41. Also, after 10/31, dump station does not have water to flush. No cell service and only one radio station came through (93.1) and it was a great classic rock station. We were at site #43 which was the best spot on the campground with a view of the woods and huge yard space. We hiked the Whispering Pines North Loop and Pickle Creek Trails. I highly recommend this park to all — it was a real treat! Great job, Missouri State Parks!
Reeses On Recess
Beautiful campground and hiking trails. Please help keep this place clean! Stay on trail and forge the creek.
Bob Reilly
Hawn State Park has great hiking trails with unique geology - rhyolite and sandstone, majestic shortleaf pine groves and crystal clear Pickle Creek and River aux Vases creeks.
Bill Murphy
Love Hawn SP!! Awesome trails. Scenic Pickle Creek. Clean facilities.
Marc G
peaceful and relaxing campground. great escape for the entire family. it has clean and well maintained facilities.
Daniel Webb
My favorite Missouri state park. Take the time to do the Whispering Pines trail - it doesn't matter the weather or season - you won't be disappointed.
Helen Buck
Beautiful place to visit. The Whispering Pines trail North Loop is best for experienced hikers. Hilly rough terrain.
Abby K
Beautiful and serene! With our young kids we hiked part of whispering pines trail and cut over to pickle creek. Was the perfect length to keep them engaged yet moderate enough to satisfy the adults. Meandering thru the creek over the rocks was a highlight for the kids and the beauty of the clean clear water was awesome for all. Would love to go backpacking/camping here someday!
Teresa Denham
It was a really quiet night, a monday so my dogs enjoyed the freedom. ☺️
Donna Davis
It is one of the most beautiful, peaceful state parks in Missouri
Crystal Wing
One of Missouri's most beautiful locations to hike and enjoy.
stephanie silverberg
What a beautiful park! We stayed the weekend of August 24-26 with our boy scout troop. We were in the scout use area, and it was huge. They said it would hold 50 people, and it looked like it would hold more.
The Scout use area had multiple fire pits, picnic tables, and plenty of room to pitch a lot of tents.
The Scout use area also had a great stage for the boys to do their skits and sing during the campfire!
But the Scout area isn't all there is to say about this park. It is beautiful. We took a 5 mile hike that included a lot of time hiking next to the Pickle creek. Very nice spring fed creek where we stopped to rest and enjoy the cold water on the HOT day.
The regular camping area was very nice with full hookups for RV's.
The bath/shower house was great, shower water was warm and the showers and bathrooms were clean.
The camp staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
I will bring my family and camper back one day, this is a really great park!
tony stuht
Hawn is one of the great treasures of this area. We have been to a lot of state parks around here and Hawn is one of the best. The hiking is great and the views are great. The smells are great too, lots of pine trees. We try to camp there every year.
Wade Burns
Enjoyed the Whispering Pine trail. Couldn't cross the creek because of too much water, so it was an out and back rather than the loop to connect up with Pickle Creek trail. All in all, a great trail for a couple mile hike.
Casey Goldschmidt
Whispering Pines Trail was beautiful. There are several creek crossings, but manageable without getting your feet wet.
Jack Bramley
Spectacular spot not too far from st Louis. The pine forests are incredible along with the rock formations and streams. Whispering pines trail is aptly named and a awesome run. Great views throughout. Great park and well managed. Highly recommended.
Christy G.
One of my favorite parks in the Missouri State Parks system. Nice flat ground perfect for pitching a tent and sites, especially those around the perimeter are nicely spaced. Great hiking along the bluffs is easily accessible from the campground. Swimming at the Castor River shut ins is a bit of a drive, but much nicer for swimming in than Pickle Creek which runs along the edge of the campground.
Jasiu G
It's fantastic. Walking on rocks, sand and dirt. Beautiful at summer and winter.
Lokis Own
Truly beautiful here. Going to be returning with the kids and some insect repellent lol. The pines alone are worth going for.
Melissa Timi
I really liked the facilities. Clean showers and bathrooms. Very nice areas to camp. But this weekend was the weekend from god knows what with screaming children everywhere. If I had known it was going to be this noisy with, dogs barking and almost fighting, noisy parents and kids, I would have looked somewhere more remote. People playing music loudly and watching movies with some kind of surround sound that bellowed into my area. I did ask the gentleman to turn it down and he did very nicely. Nice people. Really nice but the noise was all I could take. I give the park an A+ but the people were a D-. Whispering pines was beautiful. It had the solitude I was looking for. Happy trails. Beautiful place.
Raj Malla
This state park is one of my favorite park. Just an hour or so drive away from st. Louis. Nice campsites with plenty of area. No congestion with your neighbor camper. Friendly staff. Great hiking trails. What else do you need?
Just a reminder to new hiking enthusiasts , please pay attention to the trail blazers (or be careful about choosing the trail). Otherwise, it can be turn into a 10 mile hike!
Liz Glass
This park is beautiful. Sounds of 'whispering pines' are so peaceful.
Nancy Testa-Meyer
Whispering Pines North Loop can be challenging with uphill & downhill rocks & mud. Pickle Creek Trail also gets you to creek.
Jennifer Houlehan
One of the prettiest parks I've been to, and I've been to 51 of Missouri's parks and historic sites in the last year. We loved the trail along Pickle Creek. The terrain was a little rough with lots of rocks to climb over, but what a beautiful spot. Definitely want to go back!
Richard Lumsden
Great views and a great hiking trails. Pickle creek is an easy hike with some spots to stop and dabble in the water if you so choose. A little rocky but nothing a beginner can not handle.

This park is amazing! Its huge--almost 5,000 acres--and there are tons of things to see on the trails. Breathtaking Ozark mountaintop/hilltop views, secluded and moss-covered river bluffs, granite-strewn creeks that create scenery that reminds me more of Appalachia than the Ozarks, high bluff-top overlooks, peaceful pine forests. Lots of trail options for shorter or longer hikes. Primitive toilets at the main trail head and you can camp in a developed campground or at primitive backpacking campgrounds out on the Whispering Pines trail. Some of the best hiking in the state is at Hawn. It can get heavily trafficked on nice Saturdays in the fall or spring.
John Hanson
Stayed in the campground on a nice weekend in late November. I have a 23 foot travel trailer and stayed in site 34, a basic site with no electricity. I loved my site, though it was next to the vault toilet, and so there were people coming and going in the evenings. Not a problem for me, but something to think about if you're looking at staying in site 34. The campground is easy to access, though some of the sites may be tight for a very large rig. I saw everything from a pop-up to a 38 foot fifth wheel, so most rigs shouldn't be a problem. The campground host was AMAZING. I forgot my key to my outside storage compartments on my trailer and she was able to help get them opened. Absolutely saved the day! I hiked the Whispering Pines trail north and south loops while I was camped there and its reputation as one of the best hiking trails in the state is well-deserved. It is very rugged and I would say would not be good for children or beginner hikers, but if you're up for a small challenge the trail is absolutely worth it. You can hike the entire trail (9.75ish) miles, or just hike the north loop which is approximately 6 miles. I did a day hike on the trail, but there are backpacking campgrounds along the trail if you would like to stay the night out in the woods. The views of the sandstone cliffs and Pickle Creek are stunning. Bring plenty of water. I took 4 liters and ran out twenty minutes from the end. My total hiking time was around 6 hours, including a stop for lunch. If you need to cook on the trail, fires are not allowed, so bring a stove. Fires are obviously allowed within the developed campground however. Hawn is a true gem of the Missouri State Park system and highly recommended.
Aaron Chapman
Great trails & camping site. The park was very well kept & the office staff was very helpful & nice.
jj liebel
I highly recommend this park to anyone who is looking to do some really good hiking top notch well maintained everyone's very friendly exceeded expectations. The only thing I know is was during the middle of summer I didn't see any word cool off like a large river so there's that. But beautiful forest wonderful hiking.
Joseph Utter
Several trails of varying difficulty - though the views are totally worth it! We saw a couple of eagles while hiking which was pretty awesome. Not very packed the few times we've been - perhaps it's a little lesser known park or we were lucky?
Note: you are not allowed to collect wood on site, so pack some in.
Katie Schubert
Great campground, very nice. Stayed one night while traveling. Nice clean bathrooms, showers and laundry. Kids enjoyed the playground and we look forward to walking the trails next time. Thanks so much!
Beej-A Koupps
It's super clean, very family-friendly, and has a variety of sites where we can camp. The trails available are all a pretty good size, and scenic. Halloween they have a trick or treating tradition, so we always try to camp out there that weekend each year. It's also close enough to St Genevieve for a Scenic side trip :-)
FUDGIE PIE
Beautiful trails near water lots ❤ rocks scaping
p mann
When you go to a state park, you like to have scenery and have the park clean with clean restrooms. This had beautiful scenery and even though we did not hike the trails, there were a couple we could have gone on but instead we chose to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of the park.
Christiane Carlsson
Love Pickle Creek & Whispering Pine trails. The creek is lovely to walk along or to have a picnic next to it on one of the many rock formations. Good workout, too, especially if you do all 12 or so miles. Just wish it was a little closer to St. Louis.
Linda Kay Dickens
Another Missouri State Park, showcasing the wisdom of our Department of Conservation. Interesting topography, the pine trees create a year round canopy. Missouri's only indigenous pine, the straight shortleaf pine. Easy trails that are well maintained, appreciated by this Geezer Boomer.
Gery Oswald
Great place for a picnic when we are in that area of Missouri. The short leaf pines are a great backdrop to picnic in the large Pavillion.
Lucinda H
Beautiful state park with lots of diverse trails. We hiked for several miles along the creek and into the pine woods and more hilly areas. Picnic and camping areas are beautiful as well. Great place for hiking or wading in the creek.
Larry Yochum
Great place for a day trip or to camp. Has pavilions, playgrounds, and a variety of trails to hike. If the streams are full, there are great places to play in the water.
A smaller but nice and quiet place to camp. Sites are decent size. There is a playground at the center of the campgrounds. Basic, electric, and group camp available. Reservations are a good idea or at least call ahead for availability.
Kati Cook
Great hike... We did the North Trail and Pickle Creek... Well marked and pretty clean paths to see... A few areas were a little tough to spot but it was worth it when we added the Pickle Creek section!!!
Thomas W
One of the best parks in the st Louis area. Campground is small but nice and quiet. Whispering pines trail is a great place to camp or backpack
Richard Orton
We stayed here two nights in October. This is the prettiest state park we have encountered. The trees are magnificent. The sites are spacious and very clean. Our single complaint is that the water hose at the dump station could not be attached to our black tank sprayer. All dump station hoses need to be equipped with a screw-on connector. We can't wait to return to Hawn State Park.
Nicole Sandefur
It's been years since I've been out here. Left disappointed today, trails are not maintained. Very over grown. It's a shame. It could be so nice out here. We left covered in scratches on our extremeties from thorn bushes. And who knows what else. I wish Missouri wouldn't have cut funding for state parks. People need places to enjoy!
Also, the map was very confusing, as well as the signage. I've been lost out there before. Would be nice to have the connector loops have mileage on them.
Jessie Woods
Such a beautiful area, with the smell of pines to top it off! Several trails, playground, picnic area with shelted, camping, bathrooms with shower. We went on Father's day weekend and it was pretty full but we were still able to find parking.
Jenni Weber
Park itself is beyond beautiful, and peaceful. The magnitude of nature is profound and serene and this is a great resource to see vast amounts of Missouri's natural radiance in one setting. However upon arrival I parked by a car whose window was smashed shortly before simply to steal a purse with nothing of value in it. Which lead to a highly unsatisfactory feeling of trusting my personal property there.
Eddie Massey
We love going to Hawn State Park. A nice clear Creek running at the base of of a cliff. Nice camping spots. Clean restrooms and showers. We aren't campers, but visit often for the hiking trails.
Gerald Canfield
Beautiful. Serene. Well cared for. Great hiking trails. Clean, quiet campsites. Has ice and firewood available to purchase on-site.
Jacob Pfaff
Great park, lots of shade and hiking.
Kurt Eifling
If you're running the big loop, take the extra time to do the scenic bluffs spur at the southernmost point of the trail. It's relatively flat, definitely the prettiest part of the route, but poorly marked on the return so stay alert. Hiker and backpack camping traffic is heavy, but everyone was courteous and shared the trail well.
Ian P
Beautiful park with nice trails
Steve Cornish
This was my first time at Hawn State Park. I did the White Oak Trail. The trail was reasonable challenging for the first mile then easy. It was a peaceful setting with little outside noise once outside the park entrance area. There is hard wood forest and a separate pine forest. There are four trial. I will try some of the others.
John McLain
Great trails for a day hike or overnight. Quiet and peaceful with only a small number of rowdy teenagers. No mind blowing views but still some very worthwhile features to take in. The ticks can be bad so take precautions.
Andrew Sikes
One of mine and family's favorite state parks. Typically a super quiet park with lots of good trails and clean facilities. Showers are always top notch and flush toilets. Will definitely be back here again for future camp trips
Becky Maxwell
One of me favorite parks in Missouri. Beautiful setting, the pine tree make me feel like I'm in California. The trails are gorgeous, very diverse. Campsites book up fast, book early.
Mike Smalley
Great park, very clean. The pickle creek trail was excellent. Some of the trail is very, very rocky. Watch your footing. There are areas to wade into.
Eric Schrauth
Great facility. Clean showers and bathrooms. Not to big. Has all different types of hook ups. Special area for scouts. Difficult trails!
Steve Windeknecht
Nice park. Could use some triming on the White oaks trail. Also very Rocky could clear some of that out. Really not that much to see on it.
Heather Ogle
Beautiful, quiet & peaceful area. Bathrooms & showers were very clean, so were the campsite areas! Enjoyed the hiking trails too!
Jessica Ryan
An amazing place for hiking. Nice campgrounds.
Abbey Askew
Absolutely beautiful park. We would have loved to enjoy a little more outdoor time, however after a short hike my husband had about 5 ticks on him... Very clean picturesque park. Just wish they could do something about the ticks.
Terry Brown
Love going camping out here for a two day hike, you can do it in one but it's not easy if your not used to going on long walks. Beautiful views, come here with a group of friends and no cellphones and I promise you'll find a better connection!
Tim Raster
Pickle creek trail it's nice. Full loop is about 3 miles. Fairly rugged, Rocky, some inclines to deal with. Creek bubbles nicely, dog loved splashing in it.
Cindy Archer
Clean restrooms ,showers , laundry. ( Shower and laundry Cion opperated)! Nice camp host! Pickle river ..bike and walking trails! Little off the road 18 miles.. worth the drive!!
Sylvia Titgemeyer
We have always loved Hawn, and had a pleasant Thansgiving weekend hike there. Go early. Others have discovered this delight, and the park was closed to more visitors when we left around 12:30.
Deloris HILL
Nice sites. Had a great five days. Wish they had full hook up. Not fond of using public restrooms. Hiking trails available and not far if you want to try out wineries in the St. Genevieve area.
Vicente Andrews
Absolutely gorgeous nature reserve. Visit for camping and or hiking along the various trails. Campsite is quiet, spacious, tall trees, shaded, description does not do the site justice. Visit and spend a day or two.
Mr. Bacon
Good place to hike with friends. We hiked the North loop of the Whispering Pines trail (9.75 mi trail with some rugged terrain). If anyone finds a pair of gold/brown glasses lying on the side of the trail they are mine!
Cher & Jon Robinson
Hiking trails are beautiful! Campsites are beautiful and spaced well apart. Shower houses are very clean and spacious with warm water.
Jason D.
Love this park. I highly recommend pickle creek trail and make sure to come as early as you can in the morning! That'll save you from the heat in summer and guarantee you a parking spot since they're very limited!
Lynn Rinker
My favorite MO State Park thus far! Great views, moderate trails, and light traffic (weekdays). The friendliest staff of all nearby state and county parks. The drive is always worth it.
Silvril Moonshadow (Silvy)
Trails are not for beginners or serious mobility issues, but it is very clean, well maintained and lots of easy access to information and educational materials.
Julia Vogel
My favorite Camping spot in Missouri. The campground is very clean and spaced out. Great showers and bathrooms for a campground.
J.D. Myers
We hiked the white oaks trail. Nice trail that is easy to follow. However, maps says to run the loop clockwise, but it is marked to run it counter clockwise. Still there seems to be little risk of getting off trail
Pamela Kummer
Camp hostess was very pleasant and gave a lot of information about where to go and see things. Didn't use the bathhouse but the sites were clean and shaded. Wonderful place to stay.
Kurt Boemler
The campsite was great. However, in the summer the trails are not maintained. We lost the trail several times because of excessive overgrowth. It also made it impossible to avoid poison ivy and chiggers. If you come for the trails, be sure to visit late fall through mid-spring.
Kent Myers
Peaceful, clean restrooms, hot showers,, beautiful pines. Great hiking. Electric but no sewer. There is a dump station.
Lisa Shultz
Great park any time of year!!!
Hannele Haapala
Great trails, could use more trail markers along the ways.
Joe Steiger (Tiger)
Great place to camp and hike!
Sasha Regalado
Absolutely wonderful park! Very family friendly, just watch out for the ticks! It is laid out very nicely with a water break about halfway through the hike and a little stream with clean water in which kids can play.
Dan Leach (Rotten Old Man)
The last time the glaciers got this far south they deposited a unique mixture of nutrients in the soil which yields an array of gorgeous flowering plants. If you are a hiker you need to go there.
History buffs may be interested to know that one of DeSoto's proposed routes West led him generally along highway 32 between where Ste Genevieve and Farmington Missouri now stand. The caravan followed close to the stream running through Hawn as it was a source of salt.
Olivia Aguirre
Great area to camp. Not great service though. The shower house is very clean! Lots of trails, a playground, and fun creek to swim in!
Pam Burton
Well-maintained trails wind around outstanding natural rock formations, fauna, and views. Lots of connector trails so you can choose your own adventure!
Mark Unterlechner
Good for camping and hiking not alot of water sources. About 50 RV sites, and only half of those with electric, and only a handful of water spickits. Only 55 miles from Arnold Mo so an short drive for us to get away from Urbana!!!
Adie Bennett
Fantastic hiking trails, large picnic area for day use, playground, and only a little over an hour outside of Saint Louis. I can't wait to camp here and check out some of the other trails.
Tom Ballard
Here is the bottom line.. Hawn State Park is the best state park in Missouri.. It was better, but, they have made some recent changes that I do not like... Hopefully they will backtrack and fix these errors, but who knows.. The issue is that they stopped, or tried to stop the freestyle backpacking in the park.. This was one of the most awesome parts of the park.. It is beautiful, and great for off trail backpacking, but, somebody got the strange idea that all backpackers should start camping in approved sites only, ones that you have to reserve, like a regular campsite.. This just destroyed the experience by my standards.. It no longer feels like real wilderness freedom.. Everyone has to poop and pee in the same place, etc, etc... Plus, they put in fire rings for the fire bugs...Leave no TRACE people like me do not build fires... We hike, we camp, we leave, you never know we were there!!!! What is wrong with that, but, it is still Missouri's best state park, by my standards... I understand the state is building some commercial projects to lure in more people, around the Current River, etc.. But, those places are not my style.. To much like being back in the city..... So... But, HAWN state park has a place just down the road that just might have the best burger and fries in the state, MIDWAY BAR AND GRILL... Yummy burgers and fries... So, go for the park, stay for the burgers.!
Richard True
Well maintained and easy access to several trails. Pickle Creek Trail is difficult, though. Be sure to wear good gripping trail shoes.
Rhys Butler
Well worth the hour and a half drive from Illinois to hike this trail. Will be returning in the future. Hills, rocks, creeks, nature. All good things!
Anthony Jenkins
Beautiful campgrounds with White pines all around right next to a creek with sand bottom and sides. The campground is well maintained and even has a kids playground area.
Robin Steinmann
Great place to camp, hike, Spend time with family & friends. Very clean, well kept park with nice shower/bath house, camping hook ups, trails to hike and a clean creek to play in.

If you visit please leave no trace.
Diana Chandler
Beautiful park, great hiking trail however at the main area with the outdoor shelter it was crazy busy, no parking spots available.
Thomas Simi
No cell service, but it's a great little state park with a great little campground.
Paul Whitten
My son played in the creek while my wife and I enjoyed the trail. It's not as easy as she said it would be, but not difficult for a couple of healthy young seniors.
Aaron Champagne
This park was amazing! Decent size spots. Playground. Free showers. The grounds were clean and appealing. First time checking this pace out. I will be back for sure!
Rachel Byrnes
Absolutely beautiful park. Went backpacking and camped in the park and it was just wonderful. Crystal clear streams, beautiful views, great hiking trails...a favorite!
Scott Peters
Lots of fantastic hiking, a wonderful creek to play in and a nice picnic area with a playground. Parking can be a pain when it's crowded as there aren't a ton of spots.
Think for yourself U
Great views, i would recommend for first timers to take a trail map and look at the difficulty of the trail before hiking. They have out houses and regular bathroom, showers and laundry facilities.
Joseph Owen
Love to catch crawfish in the creek. Wonderful place to cool off in the creek at the top of pickle Creek trail. Pickle Creek trail does have difficult areas with bolders.
Clint Agee

Aaron Barbee (A-A-Ron)
I wanted to give the park 4 stars, but we literally just pulled into the first parking lot we found, hiked 4 miles and then left. Yeah, we were there for about 2 hours, but we barely scraped the surface of what they have to offer. I'm sure we'll be back, though. :)
Kathy Moll
