Reviews of Castlewood State Park
I'm not a nature person at all or one to consider hiking as a fun outing. However, I must say that I was beyond impressed with Castlewood State Park! I am not into exercise or fitness, but I am very much in love with the hiking trail here. It's a beautiful leisurely stroll with minimal exertion that you will wish wasn't over just yet as you reach the end. October is my favorite time to visit with all of the gorgeous colors. We hit the 2.7 miles trail around 10:30 a.m. which takes 2.5-3 hours with resting, gazing, playing & pictures. Afterwards, we enjoy a picnic lunch in one of the open meadows or picnic sites. If you're looking for a free or inexpensive date or family outing that's memorable & enjoyable for everyone, Castlewood will definitely impress you & your loved ones! It's just the perfect amount of outdoor adventure without overdoing it or hearing excessive complaints from tired or bored kiddos. Even the biggest of couch potatoes will love it, so drag your lazy family members too. I promise you will love it!
Without a doubt, this is the best place to hike within the St. Louis area. Great trails and beautiful views!! Fall colors are really starting to show but haven't hit their peak yet.
I’ve been coming here since I was a little kid! Great place to bring the family for hiking and easy nature walks. They have paved and unpacked trails. You can hike, walk, bike and bring your dogs. They have a water front for hot summer days too. Parking is limited when the park gets crazy busy in the summer time but over all this place is a great place for summer hiking!
Lone Elk Park is a great free place to drive through. You can walk the trails, stop at any of the picnic sites or just drive thru. Love coming here. It was a good day to see the velk, buffalo and some deer.
Great Park! The trails are excellent and walking with stream with my dog is one of our favorite shared pastimes! It can get pretty busy during the summer and the trails along the river can flood during heavy rains. Otherwise this is a great spot to run, mountain bike or take in the views from the bluffs!
Best spot for me to hike alone. I feel super safe out here. Lots of people lot of trails and variety of levels of hikes 🤩 …
Love this park. Great to for all ages and all pets. (I mean, If you feel like walking your cat or your pet turtle you probably could). Beautiful place for nature viewing, playground for all kids, bathrooms accessible. We love it here!
Loved this place the past 14 years and still do. Lil disappointed at their control of the beach and whatever they are doing to the creekside near the playground. Not allowing swimming cuz of drowning risk- I mean, that's all bodies of water anywhere. Seems a bit overboard.
The park was beautiful. The trails were marked all the way through. It was extremely busy. Finding somewhere to park was a huge challenge. The views were stunning though. And the playground appeared well cared for.
This has been one of my favorite places to go to run and hike. There's a myriad of trails that range from flat and fast along the Meramec River to long technical climbs and descents up the bluff and surrounding hills. With connections down to Sherman Beach, you can put in massive workout. Just know that this is a very popular park given it's close proximity to St. Louis and it will often reach capacity on the weekends.
Awesome “hiking” place! We’re from the rocky mountains and have missed hiking so much out here. This was a good incline, great trail maintenance and great sharing with men bikers. Tons of shade too.
First time here and it was super nice. There are planty of trails for walkers and bikers. The view is amazing.
Castlewood is one of my favorite State Parks in St Louis County. I totally recommend it for hiking and Mountain biking. The creek running through is an awesome crystal clear creek to wade around and get cool on a hot day.
Such a beautiful park for hikers, walkers, biking, nature lovers, fishing, with beautiful views and picnicking, Scenic River trail is amazing with Meramac river views. It has three trails, you need to come here again, it cannot be covered in one visit. Kiefer creek is amazing for playing in water. A beautiful treasure in St. Louis county!
Must visit!!
I’ve visited Castlewood State Park twice now as it is a great place to hike and is really dog friendly. The trail is difficult enough to where I feel like I’m getting in a decent workout (about 2 miles according to my Apple Watch) but yet not too hard to where I feel like it’s killing my dog. The terrain is also a little rocky and while we thought we might be able to get into the water based on some other pictures people posted, there were signs that said it wasn’t safe. If there is more than one trail, I couldn’t tell you. I don’t feel that there is clear signage about what is where - I just drove and found a bunch of cars parked and decided to scope it out. They also don’t have a ton of parking and again, if there is more beyond that initial park and trailhead, it’s not clear. We’ve never ventured further down the road.
Park is AWESOME! Just very crowded trails and lookouts when weather is good. The day we went parking was scarce, trails we crowded, tons of little kids n strollers on the trail. Otherwise it's a beautiful park.
Awesome park well maintained trails. The recent rain has really made some of the trails a little more difficult due to erosion. Overall one of my favorites to ride Mountain bikes
Great state park. We went specifically to hike and take in nature on a beautiful day. They also have some pavilions, playground, canoeing, etc.
There are some steep cliffs so do take care with the little ones. We hiked with our 7 year old and while she did complain a little she finished like a champ.
Lots of trails with varying lengths, a nice playground, covered picnic areas, and a family favorite for us: the easily accessible and wade-able creek area!
It's so majestic picturesque today! 🫶🥰🤩😍🤓♥️ perfect weather with the vibrant colors of the leaves. …
My cousin, his wife and two year old granddaughter went to this park today.
We were lucky to find parking immediately (I recommend getting there early) and walked the Lone Wolf Trail.
It was a beautiful trail! We saw birds and a large black snack (didn't mind us) during the hike.
I appreciate that it's a loop trail that ends at these gorgeous fields with picnic tables and "hammock trees."
It was the perfect place for a picnic and relaxing in the hammocks.
Very nice park lot's of wildlife nice clean creek with some deep areas. Will definitely be coming back.
Beautiful park close to the city. The trails are amazing and also dog friendly, which is a plus. The only complaint, signage and trailhead markers are tough to find.
We love the trails. This is a great place to bring your dog
Great trails for all intensities of hiking/biking/horseback riding. Great for taking your dog.
Scenic overlooks of the Meramec River and surrounding area. A few trails have lots of wooden steps with railings to navigate along the way up/down.
Some parts of the trails run parallel with the river and Union Pacific train tracks (actively used, so use caution and supervise your kids and pets).
Top tier hiking trails that are pristine, well-maintained, scenic, and have a nice range of difficulties. Each trail has many picturesque stopping viewpoints and there's also a playground for your kids near the parking lot(which can be a bit full sometimes). Highly recommend this park, it's a fun activity for free!
Beautiful vistas, nice trails, relatively clean toilets and large playgrounds.
Just beautiful! I have to say that it has changed quite a bit with them doing erosion protection. There are a lot of fenced off areas that used to be wonderful areas to go walk to. I'm not encouraging to cross the lines that they set up but it is just depending over a little bit LOL
Beautiful park. Was difficult to find parking. Other than that it was a wonderful hike.
Always a great place for walks and runs on trails. Miles of trails, ample parking and lush with nature.
Beautiful scenery, great hiking, right in the suburban Saint Louis area.
Great place for a quick hike outside of Saint Louis. Fall colors are pretty good. It can get busy. We had to make a few rounds before we found parking. But other than that all good.
Wow. Super dog friendly and seems like responsible owners. Recovering from an illness, my first attempt at being more physical... hahaha... no. But it did give me motivation because I miss hiking! There were lots of folks just walking the road too. This was around 7am on a Saturday. Beautiful. I will return!
Mid January solo hike on Lone Wolf Trail (hiking path). There are plenty of other paths to take, and there will be other seasons than Winter to visit the park, but I only need to experience what I did today to have a five star rating. Lovely walking trail, great way to experience fresh air, scenery, and meditative silence.
The park is amazing year round but especially in the fall with the colorful foliage.
There are also beaches with really fine grain white sand. Literally nobody goes there… There are do not swim signs but that’s only if you swim ofc
Love this beautiful scenic park in all seasons. Great views on the trails from the bluff tops. Nice creek winds throughout, in addition to Meramac river. When crowded on pretty days and weekends, parking can be a challenge.
This is amazing trial experience I had in recent times. Must visit place with friends and family. Ample parking spots. Trail path is well marked and maintained. Every few steps, there is spots to sit back and relax with wooden benches. Purposely there are plenty of viewing decks which give wide panoramic views from top. From top, whole area looks green with thick forest and Meramec river flowing down and railway track.
Word of caution- always watch out for big spiders.
All in all must visit place 😊
My lovely local park, hiking, running, mtbing, countless little side trails and secret spots. Perfect mix of groomed rolling soft track & rugged rocky trail with some steep fun jaunts. It all depends on which routes you connect, lots of options.
Main sections of the park are naturally very adapted to human presence and use over many decades, but still, there are areas of solitude and remoteness, you just have to find them 😉
The only major problem I think is the connector to the west side of the park (Nettle Loop, Cedar Bluff, Al Foster system), it is almost completely washed out and will be hard to pass for some. Although maybe keeping the traffic down on that side would be a good thing.
A number of people have drown trying to swim in the Meremac river, dangerous currents. The creek through the park though...dangerously fun. No overnight use/camping
Castlewood will always have a place in my heart ❤️
Was an amazing time with a spectacular view! I loved the red trail and the view from the stairs. They have the water roped off and the kids playground. The furthest parking was also closed during my visit.
Multiple trails to choose from. Usually high traffic on the weekends. River View trail definitely has beautiful views of the river, it's about a 3 mile loop and took us an hour and 43 minutes.
Castlewood is a beautiful park. Many trails ranging in levels of difficulty and it's easy enough to find trails that are not too busy. If you decide on a busier/more popular trail just know that it gets pretty crowded. Lots of wildlife to see, cool plants, and neat mushrooms after rain. Highly recommend. Just be sure not to swim in the river. It's dangerous and last time we were there the park officials were looking for a missing person in the river.
Edit to add: all the recent flooding caused a lot of fallen trees and excess thick sand. Not a big deal for hikers but wanted to point it out for the bikers.
Nice walk along the river. You get the best of both worlds — climb the bluff for views from above including scenic overlooks — cross under the railroad tracks to walk along the river from the lowlands. Great tree climbing opportunities. Not overly crowded once you go 3 tenths of a mile or so. Well marked and pet friendly. Had a great time and would do it again.
We love this place because of the animals and so peaceful. We brought our son and friends and now our granddaughter! In the snow picture is tracks of elk crossing the lake and never got this close to to buffalo in all the times we've been driving through!
This place was really neat. It had the world bird sanctuary which included an Andean condor, bald eagles, all kinds of owls and many other birds. Then just a little bit down the road is an elk and bison Sanctuary that you can drive through. Check out the photos but I've attached. I think you'll find this place is definitely worth it and the best part is that it's totally free. I was happy to make a donation for the service that they provide.
Favorite Park to exercise (walk, run, hike, mtb, etc), with great views of the Meramec river, but gets really full and it's hard to find places to park esp. on weekends. There's usually more room when it opens at 7am, or before closing at sunset.
One of the best parks with great views. Often really busy on nice weekends. River trail up to bluffs is great for hiking. They have a beach for swimming but must be strong swimmer. Grotpeter great trail for mountain biking along with other trails. Trailforks or other apps are helpful to see all 15 miles or so that links into alfoster trail. Pictures from all 4 seasons. I am there 2-3 times a week every week.
Nice trails with plenty of secluded areas along the river and creeks. It can get busy on the weekends and parking can get tight. There are also nice places to kayak or canoe here, just keep in mind that there are dangerous areas in the river where people have drowned. It's a popular place to take dogs as well.
Really nice walk, with great views of the river.
Castlewood is a wonderful place to go for a hike, run, or even to bike. The scenery is lovely as you follow the trail along the river. I highly recommend that you visit Castlewood State Park when you are in the area.
Castlewood is always beautiful no matter the time of year. They have great hiking trails as well as mountain bike trails.
Amazing site for hiking! Every visit feels like its brand new. I would say stay hydrated and away from the water I can swim but the water looks dangerous with unknown tree or items. Other than that I would recommend to hike the trail and explore mother nature
Castlewood State Park is a very nice park for being so close to the city. The trails are well kept and blazed. There are often good chances to see wild life on the trails. You can see more about our visits on Happy Trails Hiking on YouTube.
Great park. I just wish I had more luck mushroom hunting here. The trails are great to hike, and there is a nice overlook atop the hill.
Excellent hiking trails from easy to moderately difficult! Great places for picnics.
Clean bathrooms and well kept grounds.
It is such a nice outdoor area so close to town!
Good family park with hiking trails for all ages. Lots of parking but still gets very busy especially on sunny days in the middle of winter. There is a playground that is currently under construction and trails for mountain biking. The views are decent and the harder trail is rocky for a good workout.
Been going here since my childhood. It's way more than your typical park. Great for family events, massive hiking trails, and if you bike then youre in for a treat, there are several hiking trails of differing difficulty. Grab a map and plan out your day. Be careful, the bluffs on some of the trails have treacherous drops, but the views are gorgeous!
It's a great little place to go for a hike. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll thru any of the three trails. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city even though it's minutes away. Bike thru the trails if that's what you are into. Enjoy a spot of Bald eagle watching especially along the scenic river hike. It's nice and quiet. You can sit at any of the scenic areas on benches or lookouts. Just remember to bring your own hydration. I've even seen people doing some free climbs along my hike.
i had a few hours to kill and i was passing through ballwin MO and using alltrails APP came across castlewood state park and the lone wolf trail. i'm sure glad i took the time to do this very easy to follow 1.7 mile loop trail. it only has a elevation level of 223 feet and a very level walk at the top. even tho it was January you really get some nice views from the cliff edge and the trail has some nice red dirt and rock formations. at one point there is a bench to enjoy one of the views so you might want to bring a book or a lunch. a great place for a quick hike, jog or walk with man's best friend. if you have young kids this would make an excellent trail to introduce them to nature and hiking. the park ranger was was really cool to talk with and had some really great suggestions for trail and historic sites to see outside of the park. i found the park and the ranger a real pleasure to visit. i wish i had more time to explore the rest of the park.
Great park for hiking with beautiful views. You may notice a lot of cars in the parking lot, but you don't run into a lot of people on the trails which makes it feel even more secluded.
I would recommend it for a solo or family adventure.
Great hike. Saw a few other people on the trail but not many. A lot of people in the park but it didn't seem crowded and I felt my car was secure in the parking lot.
Best hiking and MTB trails in all of WestCo, but bring your patience, be prepared for crowds on a nice weekend day.
My wife and I go hiking at Castlewood at least once a month. The park is very well maintained, the paths are well marked, and it is very scenic, especially the River View path.
I highly recommend Castlewood for anyone interested in hiking, walking their dog(s), or just taking a walk.
Incredible view!! An easy walk up the hill to the spectacular views but you will definitely be out of breath. At least I was but would take that little hike everyday if I could!
A great trail for little ones with fun things to see along the way and beautiful views.
Best park in West County for hiking, MTBing and relaxing. Upper trails are good for running even right after the rain. Great views, hills, flats - love this place!
I have fallen in love with this park so much. I have visited a couple of times now. And the place is so calm, hardly people around. It gives a chance to enjoy the place without any distraction. If you are lucky, you will be able to catch few glimpses of deers too. What more you want to wind up a day ?
Beautiful park with easy to moderate trails to meet all skill levels. Scenic river and cliffside views, as well as a play structure for kids, pavilions for eating and restroom accommodations. Very pet and kid friendly. This is one of my favorite spots in the greater St. Louis area.
Something for all ages & perfect place to take a social dog. Be lazy down buy the river or a creek or see how you do with the breathtaking hike that includes well over 100 stairs. My favorite place to hike in STL
Love this place. Perfect for sunsets and has the old Rt. 66 bridge you can walk across. Very picturesque!
Beautiful walk along the river. They really need to open the rest of the park. Very little parking. Why has the back of park been closed to cars for 2 years maybe more. I am very curious there isn't any construction. Hope this isn't fr drownings. I have never seen an area so marked for no swimming. English, Spanish, sign language. Yet someone just died there last week. It is not the Park's fault. Please be responsible, it is your life or your child's. River looks very peaceful. It isn't.
First time visiting but will return. Entrance is by the carload, $8. Some areas are usable with a wheel chair.
CWSP is a clean open mutil faucet experience from the spring feed stream to numerous hiking trails picnic shelters ballfields kite flying large playgrounds bike trails modern bathroom facilities visible park rangers access to view the MISSOURI river ez drive through and ample parking accommodating fields for pets to play scenic views bbq grills cut grass and the list goes on!
Excellent hiking trails good for both adults and kids. There are harder trails but most are easy to medium. There is a playground for kids and some (not many) picnic tables.
My family love to visit Castlewood Park you can do.
1. Different 4 to 5 trails easy to moderate level.
2. Walking
3. Biking
4. Hiking
5. Small water stream for kids its safe.
Spend your entire day with family and friends.
Amazing place to wander and experience nature up close. Deer are plentiful, best early morning or just before sundown. Possum at dusk. Turkey vultures spring and summer.
Park in the parking lot to the right just past the small bridge Midway in the park. Then walk up the hill to see the best view from the cliffs.
This is a great Park for families and other groups to get together. Staff allows canopies and even generators to be brought in. Having a fan running at least gave us a breeze when celebrating graduations. Perhaps I'm just getting older, but I remember when Missouri State Parks didn't have flush toilets. Those were the days when a group of people stood around a park laterine trying to figure out how to get some thing that had been dropped in. Thankfully those days are long gone at Castlewood State Park.
Plenty of dogs to meet and greet 💕 perfect hike 😍 finished it off with some time on the swing set 😎 Scenery and trail gave me a Grand Canyon type vibe. Definitely going back and bringing more people. …
If you have time to walk around, take it. This park is over 1800 acres of mostly wooded area. Meramec river running through the middle is a bonus. Plenty of fishing opportunities. The southern side of the park is hard to get to, but if you do, it is totally worth it because you will be mostly alone. You are far enough out of society but a quick 15-30 minute walk back to your vehicle in most places when the sun is setting. Other park opportunities around the same area makes this point of Saint Louis County a great place to be.
One of my favorite parks in the area!! A fun incline hike with gorgeous gorgeous views!! Always pretty busy, but theres usually always parking somewhere
Let’s be honest, folks. Either you hate it or love it, am I right? If you don’t.... well don’t come here and save your 1-Star review for a bank or a lawyer.
With that being said this place is beautiful. Trails, river, areas to set up and grill with a group. It’s a fantastic park and one of the many parks Missouri has to offer. For those looking for ideas this is my recommendation.
Pack a cooler with food and beverages. Come early in the morning and start your day with a trek through one of the trails. If you like riding bikes bring that instead of going on foot. After making a run through the trials you then bust out the cooler and lounge out on the river. It’s worth every moment.
It was beautiful day. My daughter my dog Max and I enjoyed the views at the top of the hike.
Amazing scenery for being this close to a city and easy walking paths. And people are always walking their dogs so you can be sure you'll have a great time petting one of those~
A great place for everyone. Easy trails for family, challenging trails for those looking for Workout. A wooded feeling for the outdoorsman, and an ice cold spring fed creek to cool off in on those warmer days.
Lovely trail! Safe for small kids, pets and elderly! Enjoyed the fall colours so much
Good place to go for a hike and to see some beautiful nature. Bad place to go for a swim. Current is strong and water is brackish.
So many birds to see! It was a great experience. The volunteers are very friendly and answered our questions! Very clean area, well maintained
Beautiful hike. Large old trees, nice views over the river and all so close to St Louis.
Love love love Castlewood!
One of the coolest places that is close to St. Louis. My favorite trail is the Lonewolf trail that goes up on the bluff, such a beautiful view!
One of my favorites escapes. Whether it is hiking, trail running, creek play or the annual Skippo trail race, there is ways adventure at Castlewood.
What a great outdoor adventure.
I have been here several times and I'm still not sure I have seen or walked it all. The paths do not lead you lost randomly in the woods either, they are very clear to follow and lead back to main areas easily.
The views are one of a kind for this area, the river view trail is a must see any time of the year. One of my favorite parks by far.
Best place for hiking and nice spots. There are some spots to do grill and have a happy place.
Solid state park for moderate to experienced hikers. The view of the Meramec River is gorgeous and worthwhile. Muddy on rainy days!
This is one of my favorite parks to go to in my home town. Every time I get to the top the view is never a disappointment. The hike up can be brutal there is more than one pathway. Make sure you bring water and maybe some snacks. One goes up a lot of stairs (I usually don’t take that one) I prefer the one that goes down the steps haha. When it is a Sunday and nice out don’t expect to have the park to yourself there will be a lot of people.
Nice well marked trails ranging from a leisurely walk to crossing streams and hiking up steep hills. Access to the meremec river was restricted.
Really great trails, a playground, and easy access to the water during the summer. I've run several races here and all have been a ton of fun. If you get a chance and are motivated, follow the trail towards the back of the park and take the 200 steps up to get some great views. If you're a trail runner, this is a great place to go.
I love this place! Great for hiking and looking off huge cliffs. Beautiful view. They also have a creek to swim in and fish. A playground and tables for parties and events. On the back far side there is the river to swim AMD boat in
Such a beautiful place absolutely breathe taking. The best park in the Saint Louis area!
Love hiking there. A lot of trails to choose from.
Very nice tails. A little too crowded for my liking. Trail heads are not very well marked.
Awesome park esp considering how close it is to the city / suburbs. Nice maps, I'll try to add a decent Pic of my crumpled one. Trails are pretty hardy.
Great respite from any hassle. Picnics to hiking makes all the troubles fade away as nature reveals its beauty. Come see.
Great place to spend the day and have a picnic and. Let the kids. Enjoy the park
Love coming here for hikes and beautiful views
Great trails for walking a dog- variety of terrain (woods, bluffs, stairs, along the river and train tracks, etc.). Has always been clean when we've gone, and trails seem well-maintained. Even when the parking areas seem a bit overwhelmed, the trails didn't seem to be too crowded. Great views from the bluffs. Some of the trail markers could be a little clearer (marking when one trail intersects with another, distances, etc.).
The trail is challenging...especially for 1st timers like me! However, the views along the way AND especially from the top are worth the climb!
I love this place! It was beautiful, my kids had a blast! I love the creek
Good place to family get together. Riverside tral was vey good. Disappointed the beach was closed due to flood when we are visiting.
Great outdoor experience. Great views and well marked trails.
Great variety of hiking options, impressive views overlooking the Meramac River.
Great park with lots of trails. It can get a bit crowded sometimes but I never have trouble finding a quiet spot.
Very nice place to visit, walk, play, and picknick. Loved it
Castlewood is such an amazing state park! I have enjoyed every visit here and every time I get out here, I love it even more. Such a great respite from the bustling City life. I ended my run with this beautiful sunset recently and could barely pull myself away from watching it. If you enjoy the great outdoors, Castlewood will not disappoint!
A great park you can take a wonderful hiking with great views of the Meramec River below!
This is a great park in the heart of Saint Louis. I have recently been there and went on the River scenic trail. Enjoyed the walk and the scenic views of the meramec river.
This is one of the best state parks in the area. It's right along the meramec river and has something to offer for everyone. There are large fields for events, pavilions, volleyball pits, playgrounds, creeks, mointain biking trails, horseback riding. You name it, it can be done here. My favorite trail runs along the cliff side over looking the river. I love this park and it is always my go to when I'm wanting a little nature in my life.
This park is spectacular. The trail is well marked and is good for all skill levels. Breathtaking views.
Excellent place to get lost in the breathtaking views. Pet friendly. Good cardio. Never ceases to amaze.
beautiful sites to see. make sure you go up the hill to start!
One of the best parks around for great trails and amazing view.
Never a bad idea to head to Castlewood.
We looove castlewood! Pup gets a swim and if you do the stairs route backwards, it’s a quick but tough hike! Chief always comes back exhausted and is thrilled to go
I was hiking and running here several times, and I am really satisfied with length and variety of trails. Great place for people who love doing sport in the nature.
We love Castlewood. Like anything else im life you need to take personal responsibility for your safety. We were there in August and witnessed a very sad tragedy. It kept us awake for weeks. I was contacted and asked if I'd support a petition to mame it illegal to swim there. I said no. If you enter a river you need a life jacket. Period. Especially if you're not a strong swimmer.
The trails and vluffs are great and beautiful. Be safe. Enjoy nature. Have fun.
Beautiful park to walk your dog and hang out with friends!!! Pretty colors in fall~
Challenging, beautiful trails that are well marked. I'm 67 years old and did a trail. It was hard but worth the scenery.
Best park in St. Louis County, excellent for all park activities, especially hiking.
Nice and calm place to spend an evening or an entire day. Great view of sunset and the trails are amazing. River scene trail and lone wolf trail are 2 good ones. Options are available for fishing and kayaking. You may swim all by yourself where warning signs are not posted but be sure to do so in off seasons. The beauty of Meramec river is mesmerising.
Beautiful hiking spot with trails from novice to more challenging available.
Beautiful park, great views, fantastic hiking trails
Great trails, great views, peaceful and relaxing.
Favorite city park. Well maintained trail and fall colors are beautiful
Loved the park! Hiking was fun, but it was very crowded and a little messy; it's probably hard to keep clean with the amount of people. I will be returning though!
LOVE LOVE LOVE! This place is amazing. Awesome rivers and streams. It is so much fun here.
It took us an hour to get there but definitely worth the trip. Great view, great hike
Castlewood is definitely the park to be at. The trails are great and during the summer, hanging out in the creek brings joy to children of all ages.
I'd recommend getting here very early in the morning during nice days, otherwise parking is basically a no-go.
This was my first visit. The park was clean with beautiful vistas. The trail I took was well marked and not too strenuous. The trees were still baron but I can only imagine what it is like in the Spring and Fall. I plan to come back during those times.
Very nice park with biking and hiking trails, with nice views over meramec river
Great hiking trails. Beautiful views. Bring water.
GORGEOUS TRAILS & VIEWS!
My Dog & I go 3 times a week 🐕😎 …
An excellent hiking destination with great facilities and beautiful scenic spots and environment! They even have a hike along the Missouri River. Great for families and dog walkers as well as couples looking for a nice day hike. Definitely recommended!
Beautiful park, very n8ce to see the Elks, Bison. We walk up the mountain also, just so nice.
Very pretty area. Nice trails. Quiet peaceful place in the midst of the city/suburbs. It was a very hot day, but was much cooler in the park on the trails.
Lots of wildlife, from deer to pygmy frogs, if you go slow, quiet and take the time to look.
Always leave at least some of the flowers so they'll grow back next year and others can enjoy them now. (Better yet, don't pick them at all) If you bring it into the park, take it out with you, and the only thing you should take away is some of the peaceful quiet and energy of nature. (And maybe some other people's garbage to help keep it nice, and safe for wildlife and others)
Bring water.
Beautiful love the trails
This place never disappoints, no matter what season. We went last Saturday, before the unusual rains and flooding. There was plenty of shade and a lot of beautiful overlooks.
Hiked the River Scene Trail and it was great. Lots of different terrain and views of the River. About 3 miles
Castlewood State Park is one of my favorite parks to visit. I am not alone in that thought because it is one of the most crowded parks, sometimes closing it's gates to manage how many visitors are in at one time. It has some of the best trails you'll find. Some along the hills and valleys, some up mountainous climbs to bluffs overlooking the river, and some along the Meramec River. It's one of the oldest State Parks. It is close to suburban West County populations, one of the reasons for crowds. I enjoy the old growth trees near the river and the crystal clear creek that feeds into the river eventually. It's worth the trip, but weekends it is sometimes at capacity, and may have to come back later to get in to park.
Only God can paint a picture as pretty as the river scene trail.
One of my favorite places to hike and run within 30 miles of St. Louis. My favorite time to go is around sunset which can be viewed beautifully setting over the river. The trail is perfect for moderate to difficult trail runs to get the adrenaline up and make the muscles sore the next day. The trail includes gravel, single track dirt, rocky areas, forest, and a river trail.
Parking was busy on a sunny day. River Scene Trail is great for those who want to stay on the lower Trail. The upper trail has great overlooks along the ridges.
Beautiful nature park. Trails are great, ample parking!
Beautiful day for a hike at a lovely park. Easy hike along high bluffs.
I like going here for hikes. The views are awesome and the trails are nice. Some a little hard and some fully paved and wheelchair friendly. The different spots to play football and go on a picnic is also nice. There is a lot of parking but this place can get super busy so I would go early.
Family took me for Father's Day... Great time, awesome views, lots of routes, breathe of fresh air and great over all experience!
Went hiking on the "Red" trail. Great views of the Merrimack river. Trail was marked and had plenty of locations for picture ops.
This place is absolutely fantastic if you haven't been you must check it out. Great place for the family outing. Nature, trails, bbq's, or whatever. It's a beautiful place it's clean and well kept. You can go on the rivers beach and fish I didn't catch anything but it was fun and relaxing. I seen families having fun. People with their dogs playing. It made me feel energized just being there so if you have time on a Saturday or Sunday grab the coolers, chairs, wife, and kids and head there.
If you love outdoors and hiking please go out to this park.
One of my favorite places to go hiking
Great place for nature walks, picknicks. Always injoy visiting 🙂 …
A great place to sit by the river and enjoy being outside.
Great hiking trails, well marked and very scenic. Beautiful place. Nice facilities. Quick drive from St. Louis.
My son had a wonderful experience meeting Ranger Carson. She was patient and helpful, teaching him several new things while letting him enjoy exploring.
Great park with hiking views, mountain biking trails, Meramec River, Lincoln Beach with white sand. Parking space should be more as many people will be visiting this place.
Great park. Easy to get to. Not too long not too short. Good incline and a few options/paths that can change the difficulty.
A great place to spend a day hiking and enjoy nature. Very spacious and shades to rest. The river runs through the park which another dimension. To the park. You can also spend a lazy day under a tree and read, enjoy a lazy day.
Love taking my son there, it’s a nice walk to learn all about birds. You can also go on a car tour to see Buffalos!
Absolutely beautiful!!! Only downside i can even think of is they don't have enough parking.
Awesome trails and access to the Meramec river.
Fun place to go walking/hiking. Nice views. Grassy picnic areas. Saw 2 deer and a few ducks.
Need more parking for sure.
Great place to mountain bike and relax. Very helpful staff explained where all the trails are located.
Great park, great hiking, great views of the Meramac River.
This park has amazing views. Especially in the Fall.
Main Trails can get a bit crowded on nice days but don't let that deter you from visiting
running, hiking, biking and equestrian trails for any level of fitness.
Tons of picnic areas and pavilions for larger gatherings.
Absolutely love this park.
Love hiking and spending time at this magical park.
Great walking trails along the Meramec. Can be crowded on weekends
Love to take the dog hiking! Great place to enjoy the outdoors.
Castlewood is a great park and has wonderful scenic views and hikes of medium lengths and difficulties, but it can be a bit too busy most of the time. Other state parks are almost as close to the city center and still offer great views and hiking, trail running, and mountain biking opportunities.
It's sad to see all the recent erosion and wearing down on the trails due to increased visitor numbers.
Favorite park for mountain biking. Miles of trails from beginner to intermediate. Connects to al foster too.
Rode my bike along the Meramec River trail. It's a dirt/sandy trail for the most part so be careful. It was very crowded with riders & walkers some with their dogs. There are many hiking trails; one runs up across the bluffs with great views of the river.
A variety of trails here to hike. I was actually on the Loan Elk part for this visit. It was fairly light foot traffic. Saw 3 different groups of elk on the White Bison Loop. It was clean and trails were well marked. The view was nice of the lake in the middle. The hike only had a few climbs that get heart rate up. Not really strenuous.
Have hiked the Grotpeter Trail a couple of times. The trail is in good shape. There are some moderate climbs. A few river views, but mostly forest views.
I am looking forward to exploring more of this park.
Beautiful scenic nature in a grand scale with a variety of elevations. No other place like it in the St. Louis area!
Beautiful as ever. Even in late Fall 2021.
Always a fan of Castlewood, great trails, good scenery, and thankfully the tree density will really cut down the humidity level and the sun once you’re down in it. Great place for a hike or to go walk by the river with a view.
Great hike from outside Lone Elk Park to the river across from Castlewood.
No gate.
The World Bird Sanctuary is amazing! The birds are well cared for and our day program clients love to visit and see the birbs ┌|o^▽^o|┘♪
Gorgeous park, amazing trails, but a little flooded in low areas currently.
Good hiking trails and a creek make this park a favorite. It has over 1800 acres to explore.
Great place for hiking.
I love this park, although it's getting a bit crowded. There are several different trails with varying degrees of difficulty. It's so close but seems like the middle of know where... besides all the people.
I love Castlewood. I've been coming here for years. I love the trails and I've learned to enjoy walking up and down the creek along the gravel bar. So relaxing....
The only downside to this place are the frequent crowds. If you go during the week it's not nearly as busy.
Had a great visit to Castlewood State Park the other day. I went to collect content for my blog and was delighted at how much I was able to not only shoot that day but scope out for future photography sessions upcoming.
The nature paths are just as lovely as they have ever been in past visits, and it continues to be a great place to escape the doldrum the fall/winter seasons can often cause. Even in late fall there was tons of activity with seemingly hundreds of birds around busying themselves with collecting random objects for shelters or scavenging for food items. It is a beautiful scenic park that anyone would love to hike around.
One of the gems of the region, Castlewood is a massive & beautiful park. Just outside the city, it's a short drive away but offers a lot. The trails offer some minor challenges but are good for any skill level of hiker. If you are looking to get away for a few hours, Castlewood is a great option.
a very pleasant hike. I like that it is a circular path such that you end up where you started if you keep going in the same direction. also really like the staircase in place to get up to or down from the top of the bluff. beautiful view of the meremec River all along the bluff top. also appreciated the seating placed around the special viewing spots. its a great hike to take at any pace. I think its about 4 to 5 miles depending on which parking lot you start from.
Excellent place to hike and also to spend time with family . Astonishing view of Meramec River from the view point , feels peaceful .
Fun, easy hikes and gorgeous views of the river.
Tons of trails, only issue is parking is difficult to find on the weekends
Scenic adventures and river side walk close to mother nature. Loved it
Hike here up to 5 days a week in the summer and I always love it. The trails are lovely, some more traveled than others and we always feel safe. Bikers don't always understand they are supposed to yield to hikers but that's not the fault of the park. That being said, we always have to be aware that one might ride up behind us with little warning expecting us to move. So awareness is important. So is bug spray. And good boots. Enjoy this treasure!
Huge place with lots of trails to go walking. The views in some spots are unreal. There's also areas to hang out and play Frisbee or catch.
Great hike! Trails are marked and the view is beautiful
This park has great hiking. I would recommend driving until the road ends and going on the 4 mile red trail loop if it is crowded. The views are not as good as the other trails, but still pretty woods and a great workout!
Beautiful park. Lots of trails, nice children's play area.
Took a 1.4 Mile Trail. Lots of ups and downs but absolutely beautiful views of the Meramec River
Amazing views and Awesome Exercise
Awesome area and trails. Can get busy on weekends and nice weather days.
Trails go near bluffs so children need to be monitored and pay attention.
I go here when it rains, and the hiking is great. Mind your ability to hike uphill/downhill, bring water, clean up after your dog, and take pictures! This place is a great exercise park.
Great place for the entire family. Dog friendly..
Beautiful and peaceful scenery
Had a great day in Castlewood Park never been there before. Being down in the canyon looking up at the rock formations the trees to wind blowing through the canyon and when the cars weren't going along Highway 83 the silence was so deafening news beautiful. Highly recommend this place for only $9 a day your family you and your significant other whomever you bring or friends
Most amazing views I have ever seen! Great trails too (hiking and biking).
Busy but a great hike. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
I brought my pet tegu to the park and the water was lovely and everything was purfect except for the mosquitos
Nice trials along the river
Love the trails. Great place to get some hiking in.
Super great view of the river. Lots of shade to make the hikes easier !
This is a beautiful park with plenty for all ages and skills to enjoy. Mountain bikers especially love it! Hikers will enjoy some brief climbs, and families will appreciate the fields and playgrounds.
It is often very crowded on weekends, so get there early! You’ll beat the heat, too!
This place has absolutely AMAZING views!! The hills are steep so you'll have to be cautious with youngins but great trails to explore and there are soo many!! They also have "easier" and "harder" trail options marked by yellow and red tags.. (At least thats what they appear to be lol) We also noticed signs regarding horse back riding being limited on some of the trails but its definitely BYOH. Get out and enjoy!
Definitely do research before just picking a trail. The trail we did (river scene trail) was Definitely not for beginners and Definitely not a trail you want to do if you have anything productive to do the next day. However the park is beautiful and the river was absolutely worth it
Great place for hiking playing and fishing 🤭but u make sure u bring an insect repellent sprays and cream …
This was a nice moderately challenging trail. The view of the Meramac River was pretty. Don't plan to go swimming in it; the river is a bit too dangerous for that. Do plan to see some cool birds and deer, hike up some pretty steep stairs, and see great views atop a bluff. We chose the River Scene trail. Our dog had a good time too!
Love this place. Its well kept with great views.
There are tall beautiful bluffs, a very nice creek, and way more!
It’s amazing. You can walk for hours and can meet deers. It’s good place for picnic and grill as well.
Amazing absolutely gives you endorphins just walking through the trails straight bliss!!
A great place to go hiking. There are plenty of trails to choose from, all with different degrees of difficulty. The trails are well-maintained and the park is pretty friendly, provided your pet is on a leash. I recommend the lone wolf trail, but really you can't go wrong with any of the available trails. The park opens at 7 and closes a half hour after sunset.
Big enough to explore and hike lightly trafficked and moderately trafficked trails. Currently fairly underwater in parts. If you want to hike the river scenic trail you won't be able to hike the whole thing til the water recedes. Overall a beautiful park. Lots of available parking.
This place was AMAZING! felt like I was out of the country! Lol
Multiple options for trail lengths and difficulty. Busy location, so plan accordingly.
Great trails for hiking, jogging, biking.
It was great experience. We enjoyed our hiking at river side trail. It was our first experience. This place is suitable for every occasion.either you wanna chill with friends or enjoy nature in alone.
Best place to hike in West county! Well maintained and easy to get to. There are trails for all ages and ability levels and if you are in need of long endurance runs there are miles and miles of trails along the river!
This is one of the best parks to hike at with its variation in terrain. There is also a play ground for the kids, a party area for if you want to host a party, and a nice creak and river. Castlewood state park also sometimes hosts outdoor events and on top of all of that, there is a camping area. Overall this is a great park to visit with your family and/or friends, just don't liter please.
I had so much fun going through and looking at all the birds. I'm so very glad I went.
Great place for some difficult hikes. Our friend group goes, we take kids and dogs. Very busy place. But from what we've seen people are good about getting out of bikes way and passing each other.
Close to the city with some good views. Lots to do here.
This is an amazing place to visit. I take my kids hiking here a couple times a yr. Never disappointed.
Magical trails. Huge trees. Beautiful views
If you LOVE to hike- Relax or just love nature-
this is the park for YOU😊 …
The park is absolutely beautiful, and the trails can be a bit steep, but the views of the river are breathtaking. If you go on a weekend, be prepared to hunt for a parking spot, and quite a bit of foot traffic on the trails.
Beautiful sprawling park with great walking trails that go along cliffs, through forests, and along the river.
Great place for a semi-challenging hike. Watch out for the mountain bikes, as hikers and bikets share a trail.
Castlewood State Park is so beautiful! There are a wide variety of trails to choose from. You can hike to the top of the highest hill and See For Miles. Or if you prefer you can walk along the river bank through the shade trees. It is a great for the whole family.
Very crowded on a Saturday morning. Lots of cars circling around looking for parking. The hike itself was pretty good, but there are better ones in the area. I prefer the Lewis & Clark Trail in Weldon Spring, for example, because the view is just as nice and there are far fewer people.
We went here on Christmas day for a hike with our young kids. I noticed there were several hiking and biking trails to choose from. The trail we went on had beautiful views of the Meramec river. Although there were a lot of people there that day, it didn't feel crowded as the trails are large and have a lot of places to stop and enjoy the view. There was litter unfortunately. Overall beautiful.
Excellent place to walk into the nature.
This is our go-to place for hiking! We like all the up-hill action first, take the steps down and then cool off with the flat trail through the field and along the river. You get a some shade, some sun and some pretty look-outs. When we went this past weekend, there were lots of families - most of them enjoying the water! On the busy days, it can be hard to find a parking spot!
Great 3 mile hike with a fairly steep climb and excellent views. Can be very muddy after rainy days.
Great place for picnics, kids to swim in river or on jungle gyms. Many trails to keep u healthy
Beautiful park just outside of the St Louis metro, to escape all that is urban. Reconnect with nature and take in amazing views as you climb to the top, where you can look out at some amazing scenery. This is a cool place to picnic in the summer and fall. It is a dog friendly area as well. Happy exploring!
Amazing place to go lone hike, with a group or family..
There are several parking lots and several trails 5-7 I believe. They range from easy to moderate.. on the tails you can see many different views..
Restrooms as well!
Love this park. It's a hidden gem in the west county area. If you want fun trails, exciting cliff views, a beach! (Although be careful people have drowned. They have signs posted) head to Castlewood. Perfect for Trail biking, walking, running (competitive and casual), picnics, family gatherings, creek walks, dogs are welcome. I think there are horse trails too. The best is the bluffs. Head up the west side trails to get there. They have these wooden steps that go all the way up to the top, perfect for a strenuous workout. So much adventure, you'll find Castlewood State Park to be one of those places you didn't know you were missing out on. (Somebody tell them to add a frisbee golf course!) :) That's it. Everything else is perfect.
Great place to hike. Trails for all abilities; Easy to Hard.
We have visited Castlewood many times throughout the seasons and it never disappoints even if The Meramec is flooded a bit. Nice trails for runners, bikers, hikers. Dogs are welcomed of course. Tall bluffs to peer over. Do be safe. Large wooden stairs the people exercise up and down on also. Great place.
Definitely a must visit if you're new to the area or just passing through. There are several different trails that you can hike, bike, or ride through. It does tend to get pretty crowded, especially in nice weather, so go early to get a parking space. It's a beautiful park and my dogs love it. If you hike the Lone Wolf trail, you can end at a little stream that the dogs can drink from and splash around in.
Wooded Gem. Excellent Hiking Trails in the Meramec River Valley Area.
Very large and wild park. Stunning place to hike or exercise at.
My Daughter amd I try to plan a day of hiking each quarter and found a gem in Castlewood State Park. There is a wide range of terrain and exceptional views. We were able to include our dog in the fun but she couldn't understand why the deer and chipmunks didn't want to play. We hiked over 6 miles on 3 different trails and had an awesome day.
Awesome experience
Temps in the 50’s with full sun. A little early in the season so everything was brown but not too crowded and definitely worth visiting throughout the year.
Beautiful views! I like that there are different trail options here and the views are fantastic! It reminded me of a midwestern version of the Torrey Pines trail in California, where you can see the ocean along the trail. I enjoyed seeing the river during my walk and giving my dog plenty of other dogs to meet!
St Louis has several amazing parks, this is definitely one if my top 3. Great mountain biking trails. Great hiking trails. Parking is a challenge, it's worth it.
Open trails, river views, lookouts, a playground, reservable pavilions, and many bbq pits for picnicing. Creek area with fliwing water shallow enough for toddlers, but a deeper area for big kids/adults.
Castlewood is an amazing park. Make sure you bring bug spray. There is a lot of hill hiking and great views of the river and surrounding forest. Patrons are friendly. Trails are good for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running. Lots of people with their kids and dogs. Park is kept up well.
My favorite park to hike with my dog Max
Such a cute little park with a few good trails, covered patios with tables, and plenty of spots for a picnic. The hills can be a tad intense at times, so be careful! Avoid peak times if you want a decent parking spot!
Great park. Plenty of open space. Decent playground. Awesome, well maintained and marked trails. Parking can be a challenge during peak times. I just can't figure out why they chose to keep the smelliest, dirtiest, and smallest bathroom (essentially a permanent port o potty) open during the winter; one nice day and the line resembles a football game at halftime and the stench is unbearable.
It's great hiking. The whole family had fun and has the longest set up stairs up the bluff I've ever seen in my life concluded by an awe inspiring view. I would highly recommend to any family looking for a spot in nature to come together and get a good workout at the same time.
There is so much to see and do in this area! Bird Sanctuary, Lone Elk Park, Endangered Wolf Center, Bison, Shaw Nature Reserve. It's amazing what you can do just a few minutes from St Louis. We love driving down here to the forest and see animals you can't see elsewhere. If you like nature and animals then you should visit any of these beautiful places and the wonderful people who take care of them.
Great hiking so close to home. Stairs on one trail not for faint of heart! Beautiful views high above the Merrimack River!
If you love hiking, walking, or biking. This is a great place, with different trails and open fields.
A fantastic place to get away and unwind. The trails are beautiful. Very popular and can get crowded quickly.
Always love going here, great trails and places to picnic or hang out and enjoy the weather.
It was a great park so it's a little hard to get started
Always a great place for a hike and some nature. Hiking trails for all ages!
One of the best hiking spots around the St.. Louis area. Sometimes the trails stay muddy after a rain so make sure you're wearing boots or shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.
Beautiful park. Very busy. Lots of cars. Nice trails with many hiking, walking dogs and biking.
A beautiful place to relax and soak in all that creation has to offer.
Best trails in the area. Very popular place. If you visit, try to go early in the morning or during the week. Be careful of mountain bikers. They sometimes aren't the best at announcing themselves and practically run you down, which is why I refuse to bring my 8lb dog. I figure they'll run right over him. But the main loop trail (3.5 miles) is gorgeous! I would recommend that you do not swim at the beach. Floor of the river drops from 5ft to 15ft and the current will sweep you away. But it's a great place to lounge!
Lots of great spots for photo opportunities if you are getting nice outdikr photos taken. We went early in the morning dueing a weekday in the summer and they were not as busy.
We avoided walking any of they trails, but they seemed well marked at the beginning for length of the trail and time it would take to travel. Nice if you are on a time crunch or race training.
Castle State Park is perfect for either a nice stroll along the river or a challenging hike. Plenty of options on different trails. Bike, walk or by horse.
Beautiful place to hike, cycle, picnic and enjoy nature, family and friends.
I love this park as it has various places to hike for amazing views. The terrain also varies from up a large hill to overlook the river, along the river, along the creek, on grass, on a trail, on rocks. Lots of bike trails, open fields, playgrounds and a lot to explore. Usually crowded though. But love the park overall.
Beautiful place to visit and take an enjoyable hike
Tha places is beautiful my nephews are having a great time and it loved the river
Great park for all sorts of activities. Be forewarned if you hike - mountain bikers come flying down the trails. I had to jump off the trails many times so I wouldn't get run over. I would highly recommend wearing a bright colored shirt if you are hiking so that the mountain bikers will be able to see you.
Hiking below the Bluffs with my pup! Not too crowded. Watch for the bicyclists. Some sneak up and don't announce! Otherwise great day!
Lots of trails to explore and other activities throughout. We arrived around 10 on a Saturday and by the time we finished hiking, the park had exploded with people. I could see parking being an issue if you came later in the day, in the summer at least.
Beautiful park with great views.
Castlewood State Park is a beautiful place to commune with nature, but when we visited, there were several renovations going on in the park, and due to all the recent rain we've had lately, the trail we tried to hike was muddy and sloppy. Swimming in the Meremac here is NOT recommended, but Kiefer Creek is a great place to enjoy the water, as it's fed by two springs, making the water crystal clear and very cool. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and will definitely return once all the work is completed.
One of the best state parks in Missouri, there are many trails to tread and paths to wander. Scenic views abound no matter where you decide to explore; a point to consider, this park is jam packed on the weekends and holidays, make sure to plan your visit ahead of time unless you go on a weekday.
For a lot of folks, this is their favorite park. It's common to see deer. There's a variety of trails to walk or bike or horse ride. There's the "castle" in the woods at the top of the hill. There are pavillions for reservation. Sometimes this park is very crowded with people, so it's good to know when to find a less crowded experience.
We can't talk about Castlewood without talking about people who come to swim in the Meramec River, because of those who have died here. This river is not a place to swim, because of the strong, erratic currents and the underwater natural hazards. A seasoned swimmer could die here. A swimmer in a life jacket could die here. Kids often die here. Before you bring a group of kids here that will swim, consider this - are you okay if some of them never go home?
This is one of my absolute favorite parks to visit in the St Louis area. Many miles of trails for hiking, a creek or river to cool down in, and numerous pavilions for special events!
The best well kept park I've ever been to. Honestly all state parks in Missouri are fantastic. Well maintained, and friendly people are always there.
One of the best parks in the St Louis area! Numerous hiking and biking trails that require different stamina levels. This park has some of the tallest bluffs overlooking the Meramec River so there are some of the most scenic views from a perch if you're willing to climb a little. Ample places to picnic and a nice playground. Wouldn't recommend getting into the river here. There are some extremely swift undercurrents and this far down the river isn't exactly the cleanest water to ingest.
This is a gem in the vicinity of city of St.Louis. So many trails to walk through and streams to wade through in hot weather. And camping near the Meremec river is also attractive option. Just a very well maintained state park!!!! Families and adventure seekers alike will love it.
Went hiking on Monday, October 29, 2018 about 5 p.m. The weather was perfect. It was, sunny, about 70 degrees, low humidity, light breeze.
Here are some videos of my hiking experience.
Bicyclists and horseback riders have their own trail apart from the hikers only trail.
Great place to go hiking. Beautiful views. The river is very dangerous though. The current is strong sometimes. Many people have drowned. The trail is a great exercise. I would definitely recommend going there.
One of my favorite parks in the greater St. Louis area. Loads of different hiking and biking paths throughout. Picnic tables, pavilions, barbecues, etc. The overlook trail has some of the most scenic views in the area.
What's not to love? As far as suburban parks go, this place is vast! Over 1,800 acres and you can do everything you ever wanted to do in a park. Ride a horse? Yes. Swim in a beautiful, yet unforgiving river? Yes. Explore ruins of resorts from 150 years ago? Yep. Abandoned mines? Yes. Trails of course. A river bluff where you could fall to your demise? You know it. This place has it all. It's amazing and admirable this place exists where it does, and in this 'sealed for your protection' world.
One of the best hiking places in the St. Louis area! Amazing scenic views from the Meramec River bluffs, great picnic areas, a nice creek for the little ones to splash in, and lots of wildlife. And trails galore! I can never get bored here and will continue to return for years to come.
Great hiking spot not too far outside of St. Louis city. It get's pretty busy on the weekends so if you're looking to hike with less people don't go on a Saturday in the spring, summer or fall months. Overall, its a fun spot to go with family or friends if you want to get out in nature and see a great view of Missouri rolling hills!
I had so much fun hiking (for the 1st time) in Castlewood! The "cardiac hill" was a hard, but do-able start to the trip. I enjoyed the challenging terrain and felt like I was getting a workout. I was glad I didn't bring my 8 and 6 year old kids with me because some of the loose rock on slopes made me a smidge nervous (I'm neurotic) and well, we walked a good distance and they would've complained, a lot! I definitely want to go again! It was fun with a group of ladies!
Free, go at your own pace. You will probably spend about 30 to 45 minutes here seeing the birds. They have some on the walking trail but don't forget the roughly 8 or so enclosures near the small gift shop.
They are in the process of rebuilding a few enclosures when we went but still worth it.
A ton of hype....but still a nice park overall.
When you have been to around the US and compare it, then it seems to not be as spectacular. However for the area, it is great. One of the best parks. Just don't believe it is gold if you have been anywhere worth visiting. However, if you come from places like Kansas, Oklahoma, and basically anywhere flat this will be breathtaking lol. Coming from Colorado, then you'll be like..."Ok, so when does the trail start? Already over? Oh......".
Actual down side is parking is very packed during weekends, and probably needs better restrooms.
I loved this park! The hiking views were fantastic, there were a ton of different bike paths to ride on, and the trails were a great length (~3-4 miles). Easy to get too as well.
Best park in st louis and greater area. Doggy approved
Great place for hiking and mountain biking..
My favorite park in the St. Louis area. Beautiful bluffs to hike up and down as well as amazing creeks and rivers to wade into. There’s space to do anything your heart desires here. Lots of bike trails, horse trails, bbq areas, and hiking trails. I spend almost every day here during the summer.
A great park with a ton of trails and some great views. Only problem is it is always SO BUSY on the weekends if it is nice out!
Beautiful park along the Meramec river.
Love hiking here with family and puppy.
Awesome to see park staff checking to make sure restrooms are clean om SUNDAY!! GREAT service.
Totally love castle wood park.
Make sure to take the river scene trail
Awesome park to spend the day at. The Bluff view trail is excellent and the views are so scenic. It can get really crowded on the trails though at times, so going early in the morning or later in the afternoon is recommended.
Gorgeous walk. Went here with my 2 dogs and they loved it. Good amount of time to do the loop I'd say we did it in a little over an hour. Would definitely go here again.
if you're city folk, beware the county police. they care about things like slightly expiretd plates, and the park where people drive through slowly is a great place for them to pull you over and meet their quotas!
other than that, I love this park. my favorite part is the section of the river view trail down by the meramec where you can see enormous sycamores that have been growing there for hundreds of years. great place to hike, splash around in a stream, and see wildlife. many scenic overlooks as well.
It's nice trails seemed a little short
Love this place.
Peaceful, serene! Loved seeing the elk and emu at the Wild Bird Sanctuary.
Castlewood is one of my favorite places to go and relax in the St Louis area. Every one around is always so calm and nice. I go there for Frisbee and Longboarding and it is easily accommodating for both. There are plenty of hiking trails to keep you busy for most of a day. Also a very recommended place to bring your dog or children.
Beautiful park year round. Scenic trails for hiking, running, and cycling. The creek is another bonus. I've never had a bad experience with people there either.
My sister and I decided to check this place out and we ended up loving it so much that we're seriously thinking of moving there (we live 3hrs away) so we can go any time we want. It's absolutely amazing and the trails are great. Definitely the best state park we've been to.
Close to home for me , and a nice place for a day hike . It's always busy with a lot of hikers , still it's pretty nice , not a challenging hike , good for kids , or just taking a leisurely hike
. I go all the time . See ya there . ST
A great park for all the usual stuff- picnics, jogging, mountain biking, etc... It has a lot of open spaces, flat trails, and monster hills. There are some cool trails along the river. I would say this is my preferred place for mountain biking.
Generally considered the premier hiking in the immediate St. Louis area, and for good reason. If you haven't been, make sure to try out at least the River Scene Trail; for people who make this a regular stop, you know that all the trails are short, lovely adventures in their own right.
Castlewood is a scenic-view park with several, moderate, well-marked and maintained trails. These trails are range from 1.1 to 5.6 miles. Depending on the time of the year, flooding from the Meramec River may occur, and some trails may be closed. I recommend the River Scene Trail Loop. Its a 2 hour, 3.1 mile loop with a great taste of many of the great aspects of the park. You get a view of the Meramec close up as you walk along the river bank, and you get a grander view that brings it all together with the scenic bluff overlook. 4.5 Stars from HikingFWD.
I've been going here since I was a small babe. Great park. I recommend the lone wolf trail. Fantastic view of the Meremec River. Avoid the creek, as it contains e coli. Really fun road to get into the park! Lots of other trails for mountain biking and hiking. The playground is nice for kids. Great park.
Great trails for walkers, hikers and bikers. Can be crowded on weekends. Past the railroad underpass for cars good number of mostly flat trails for those that don't like climbing hills and a beach with picnic areas. Under the walking underpass is lots of hills, Near the entrance lots of open fields Picnic areas and trailheads to steeper trails.
Beautiful hike down from the trail head by lone elk. Great view of the river on the south side as well. Paths are clear and stay passable after rain too.
Unless you hate nature, there's no reason why you shouldn't spend a few hours at Castlewood at least once. For starters, it's close and it's free. Early on the hiking trail, splendid vistas await you at the top of steep limestone bluffs, if you have the quads to reach them. Honestly if your legs work, that shouldn't be much of a problem. After viewing the Meramec River from above, the trail goes gently downhill and leads you alongside the river with multiple opportunities to dip your toes in.
The trail throughout is clearly marked and fairly easy to tread. I saw hikers, runners, bikers, fishers, campers and dogs. The "something for everyone" approach, coupled with the proximity to civilization, means you'll run into a few other people during the day. But unless you're seeking extreme solitude, this is an ideal park to visit.
We are very lucky to have such an openly natural park attached to St. Louis County. Great hiking, trails, creeks, flora, and fauna. And everything is well maintained, but still a little wild.
