Reviews of Fort Wetherill State Park
Beautiful but windy this particular day making it chilly but I will definitely be back when it warms up for another walk near the clear blue/teal water. That reminded me of Arcadia National Park 🏞 in Maine❣️ …
This place is great to explore amd even get alittle creative if you bring some paint.
Great place to hang and even have a small picnic.
The main thing here though is the nickname
"Graffiti Park " so bring some cans and have at it and make what you want.
Very cool park with hidden rundown fort that you can barely see from the water (complete with lots of graffiti), beautiful views from the upper cliffs, nice benches where you can sit and have lunch, and clear rocky beaches. We biked between the many parking areas to see it all and got off to explore and hike around each area.
Interesting that graffiti is allowed/tolerated at the old fort in this state park. Very interesting to look at all the art. Disappointing that there is garbage and empty spray paint cans everywhere. Most state parks are carry in/carry out, but perhaps a few garbage cans around the fort area would encourage people to at least carry their trash to that point!
Beautiful and not overly crowded when we went (before noon). One of the most beautiful places I visited in Rhode Island. It is a wonderful juxtaposition as part of the Fort is covered in graffiti but just a few steps away is a beautiful bay/beach. If you want some romantic pictures, this is the place.
Kids and I love going to this place and we go at least once a week during the summer ! Great for snorkeling, freediving, Scuba diving, fishing off the rocks, swimming on a nice small quiet beach with no lifeguards, dog friendly, beautiful sunrises and views from On Top of the Rock cliffs. Also has a big beautiful Park with old military forts in the woods.
This was a fun place to explore. Some of the graffiti is quite crude, and not family friendly. But otherwise it was a beautiful place.
very cool place! the views were amazing, some hidden beaches accessible along the hike, but seeing how the fort had been usurped by local graffiti artists was pretty interesting.
Nice scenery during the day and night. I went to the area where people fish 🎣 lots of people there from different states. They were friendly and it was nice to see a little area where people can relax, and share their love for fishing. …
Amazing views..so relaxing. Went there everyday we were in Jamestown over the 4th
Beautiful views and trails. I am always intrigued by the abandoned buildings and its history.
Love the place brings memories with dads favorite fishing spot since I was a child see a vision of him every time I fish their people the surroundings and atmosphere with boats ,kayaks ,divers etc great experience every time recommend to anyone who loves to fish or enjoy the scenery
Came here for a vacation. The location was beautiful but I couldn’t believe the amount of spray paint on every inch of the Fort. Glad I could see some of the history though.
Waooo this place has amazing view and is peaceful at the top.
I did not get to explore all of the park, but the fort part has a lot of graffiti and broken glass.
Nice state Park to have picnics, take in the scenery, swim, fish or scuba dive. Plenty of well maintained porta potties.
Just make sure to take your trash home with you. There are no public trash bins.
Going inside revolutionary war forts is awesome! This place let's you go into almost every area that isn't destroyed. It's like walking around ruins I would suggest for anyone who likes ruins and ocean fishing cuz it's on the ocean!
Beautiful and interesting. Views are amazing in all directions. Multiple areas to swim or snorkle. Fort is a bit creepy inside but fun to explore. Fun hikes. Great fishing pier as well.
Great place to explore which includes an abandoned military base of sorts. There is also a park and beach areas too. Nice place to take your camera or just show up for some walking or hiking too.
This is a gem in the state of Rhode Island!! I went cliff jumping here with a friend and there is cliffs about 20 feet that you can jump from. There is a lot of paths leading to cliffs and vistas , but there is LOTS of poison ivy and needless to say I got it! There is enough parking for maybe 30 vehicles at one area but if you drive to the other parking lot there is a great deal more. There is old forts to explore but they are mainly covered in graffiti and take away from the uniqueness of the structures. There were some people fishing and also I found a small rocky beach if you wanted to swim. I'm from Massachusetts and I would say this is my favorite place in Rhode Island, although I have yet to visit Block Island. Even though there's was a bit of people, you can find space here to get alone and enjoy the fresh sea air.
This could be a great place to visit. Unfortunately, people use it as a trashcan. This is unfortunate and sad. This is why we can't have nice things. If people would treat the outdoors with respect and dignity this world would be a great place. If you change your child's diaper don't leave the trash for the next guy. Take it back with you. Also, bring your fishing trash home with you. This is crazy. I would like to visit again and if I do, I will bring gloves and a trash bag and clean it up!
This is one of our favorite places to visit. I'm personally a fan of all the old historic battery structures, even with all the graffiti. I actually think it adds a lot of personality to them. The walk is relaxing, and sights from the coastline are breathtaking. The pictures are of the second battery, the first is quite a bit larger, and my wife and I were actually able to walk on and through it.
Very popular scuba diving / snorkeling lagoon. Incredible views of Newport, with many various sail boats and ships traveling west passage. Many Benches overlook the ocean. Excellent views of Jamestown. WWII Large Gunnery Placement which can be explored. Picnicing with bathroom facilities.
This was one of the first places I ever visited in Rhode Island, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a nice walk and it has beautiful views. For the adventurous, there are paths through the woods that lead right down to the water. Its awesome when you get the opportuity to see one of the street artists while they paint. This one of my favorite places of all time.
Amazing place to visit.
Many trails leading to different cliff overlooks of the ocean.
Certain cliffs you can jump off of into the water (scout the water for rocks first!)
Incredible old war bunkers covered in some decent graffiti.
There are bunkers in multiple locations so scout out them all!
Pretty awesome that it was 100 degrees F out and we walked into a wide open bunker that felt like 68 degrees F. My friend said that was from the spirits in there.
Really Liked the Setting. Some Really Terrific Views. However, This Park Needs a LOT of Love. It's the State's Red-Headed Step-Child. It's Pretty Run-Down. Certainly, NOT Maintained Like Beavertail, Fort Adam's or Colt State Park Which Are Pristine. Ugly, Hideous Concrete Blocks Even Pre-Date 50 Year Old Jersey Barriers.
This Park Could Really Use Some SERIOUS TLC. Compared to Other Parks...The Way It's "Maintained" IS an Embarrassment.
Such a Gorgeous Setting. It's Like Wasted Talent.
Very cool abandoned fort. This is not a well-maintained historical site. There aren't any historical or point of interest signs explaining the history of the fort, but you can access a fair amount using the sturdy iron ladders that are still in place. The barracks and fort itself are WWII era and are constructed of concrete. Compared to the Newport side, this feels very quiet and secluded. Right at the fort there is a little stone beach cove where we watched spearfishermen. There are great, quiet views of the water and nearby cliffs. Absolutely beautiful.
The scenery here is beautiful if you love to explore. There's a ton of hidden gems in walking distance, or a very short drive from one to another! Also beautiful water views.
It has some nice views, but not so well maintained. There is a fortress is the park and it’s all covered in graffiti and trash. Around the fortress there is a small path, not very secure one, that leads to the seaside. All the rocks are covered in graffiti as well. Not the most appealing park.
Fort Wetherill is a super cool historical spot on Rhode Island’s island, known as Jamestown. This fort, which is now a state park & tourist stop, straddles the perimeter of Jamestown coastline nestled in the Narragansett bay. I would challenge folks on wether if they have seen pure beauty, if they have yet to make there way to the cliffs of Fort Wetherill.
Stop by & have a family
Picnic on the grass or negotiate the weathered fort. Either way, make your way, very carefully, to the 50 to 70’ cliffs with picturesque New England shoreline views. One would would only need to watch the armature & professional artists who make the journey daily to realize the natural beauty.
The fine print here would inform adventurers that they should leave small children behind & adorn long pants & appropriate footwear if they plan to investigate the paths, fort, & cliffs. I offer this as a mere suggestion, but you don’t have to take my word for it.
Yours truly,
Scotty
It is a very large park and has great trails. Was disappointed with the amount of graffiti around, very sad. Worth the trip regardless.
Very surreal experience. You can walk around just about anywhere you want on the old fortifications, and there is lots of scenic views to walk to.
This is a place for a quick stop and explore if you are around the area. It is not a place to travel too just to see. But again if you are around, it worth a quick visit. The fort is old and abandoned, and vandalized. I have been there in summer and winter. They look so different. Was cool to see the difference.
Very interesting and fun piece of history to explore. Seems like lots of the artistic graffiti we saw the first time we went was covered over with boring tags and swears this last time we visited - calling talented graffiti artists for some better art 😂
Bring a good flashlight - lots of cool rooms and tiny passageways to explore!
You must go here hidden gem. Great views with amazing graffiti. Such a cool place to just chill.
Great to see the sunset and after all it is in Jamestown, a lot of hidden places to go, it's a favorite spot for photos even for the locals. Although we have 1 secret beach that's even better for sunset. I can't give away our special spots though. Think of an untouched Newport, RI. That's what Jamestown is, an untouched paradise filled with historical locations
I absolutely enjoyed myself, it was beautiful and peaceful
Absolutely gorgeous views behind the old fort of the coast. Follow the little trails at the tops of the stairs/platforms that go into the woods. Promise you it's worth it for the view if that's your thing.
I love this place. Wish I had more pictures from my camera but it is what it is. I got a glimpse of a nice cruise ship of the top of one of the bunkers near boat launch side of the park. Lots of history here and plenty to look at. Unfortunately a lot of graffiti but some are actually really good. I love history and walking through the fort is a blessing as it was blocked off by metal doors. But thanks to vandalism the majority of the fort is accessible. I recommend flashlights and a hoodie when walking through as random ditches and obstrustions are throughout the place. Also if u find a trail I recommend taking it as well as it will more than likely lead you to the water with some views as well. Enjoy.
This park has plenty of parking, good fishing, plenty of places to picnic. The downside is the actual military bunkers. They have been defaced with graffiti and a full of broken glass from kids partying. It is so sad to see such a historic lament defaced in such a careless way. I would love to see it restored without all the graffiti but I just know that the hoodlums will come back and do it again. But there are great views overlooking the cliffs, great sunset views of the harbor and watching the regattas and the sailing races going by. If you are a female I would not go into the bunkers by yourself. I just did not feel safe.
Lots of poison ivy, can walk through much of it if you are able to get up and down stairs. Take a bright flashlight, it is too bad that it has been vandalized as much as it has. It's history is an interesting read have fun.
Fun and easy adventure though this abandoned fort. Some scary dark tunnels to travel through or just check out the graffiti done by some talented artists. WARNING: Not all the graffiti is art, some is just immature drivel. Read up on the history before you get there, it all makes much more sense and gives you a better idea why this place exists.
Plenty of great places to eat around here too, check out Slice of Heaven for lunch outside.
Great place to get out and stretch your legs. Some nice local history
Nice small spot to park, go for a walk or sit in the car and enjoy the ocean views
Cute little spot. Very much a traditional little fishing harbor. Has an interesting view of Newport harbor and some of those big houses along the shore. You can sit on a deck chair and watch all the fancy sailboats go to and fro from Newport harbor.
Beautiful place! Very clean! Highly recommend coming here!
Beautiful park with Crystal clear water. The only disappointing part of the park was all the garbage washed up on the shoreline.
Definitely coming again and again. It’s peaceful, tranquil and you probably won’t exhaust its sights and sounds. It has a beautiful sea side view and graffiti for ages.
If you are looking for a nice location for a picnic and some ocean views, then this park is a perfect place.
I like it here. A little bit more overgrown than I remember it, but once you get to the cliff edge the views are beautiful. Too much graffiti on the rocks.
Beautiful, secluded and peaceful
I found it to be crowded this time, but most other times and was pretty bare. I still love it tho.
Great Rhode Island Park in Jamestown! There is so much history related to this location dating back to the native Americans to the Navy’s use of the location during WWII. It’s beautiful and close to the eastern passage of the Narraganset. I very appreciate the park and recommend this place to everyone.
Nice park with history and colorful graffiti art.
I love this place its so relaxing the views are really awesome i will recommended this to everyone that wants to be peace of mind or family bonding
Some of the structure's show their age and IMMENSE Rot BUT the. Iews and all the graffiti are beautiful
This place was AWESOME. I really think it should be listed more. I will 100% be returning every time I’m back in the area
Interesting old fort grounds with graffitti all over. Seems to be popular spot for local teens. Nice water views.
Beautiful scenery, lot to explore
Look for hidden pathways for taking great pictures
The kids loved this place and we spent hours investigating. Bring flashlights to check out all of the tunnels and watch for all of the poison ivy.
Come here to climb on some rocks and appreciate some mediocre graffiti. Don't come here late at night. It gets creepy.
Is a beautiful place to relax, for meditation and fishing
Look behind the dumpsters, there are sign about the history of the park. This was a short stop, if I had longer I would have like to explore more. Would come back if I had the chance.
Great place to take out the family for a great hiking and a great view.
Quite awesome hikes and sights, a bit off the beaten path but pretty fun never the less.
Great place to climb around, explore, and take photos.
I absolutely loved exploring the bunker i hope to go again soon
Beautiful cliffs, very neat abandoned fort with graffiti
Loved it took my maternity photos there my fiance and I had an amazing time in such a safe beautiful quaint ocean side area
Beautiful view from above. Unfortunately, people have spray painted this area!
Great place to walk dogs. So many beautiful spots.
What a view. Excellent place to visit for the adventure. Also you can do scuba diving and cliff diving.
Great fishing and swimming coves
Very peaceful place to visit with loved ones
Nice views!
Traverse at your own risk...rather undeveloped.
"Call me if you get lost."
Magical 💦 …
Some good views and ruins covered with graffiti.
Very nice place if you want to enjoy a quiet moment with fresh air. There are some big stones that you can sit and enjoy the ocean.
Beautiful ocean park. Great spot for fisherman, walking paths, nature.
A fascinating and eerie place. Beware of the poison ivy!
This place is amazing to explore! If you do i suggest good flashlights. They have really cool tunnels to go threw!
Amazing place to explore an old abandoned fort with spray paintings all around and underground tunnels connecting the entire fort. Plenty of places to walk and hike. The tunnels are very dark so make sure to bring a light. Great place for photos and views of the water.
This place is endless!!! So big, so much to see. You think it's just woods and you find a path that takes you to somewhere incredible.
Views are beautiful and it's pretty peaceful.
Though completely painted with graffiti, the fort is a cool place to visit if you're in the area. There are numerous breaks in the low fencing surrounding the fort so accessing the ruins is simple. Just watch your step and mind the holes and ledges... this was fenced off for a reason. Climb to the top or follow the trails around the backside to find a beautiful rock outcrop over the ocean. It's a nice spot to watch the sunset or sunrise as there's mostly water to the east(ish) and west(ish). There's also a nice view of the Pell/Newport bridge, which looks cool in the twilight when the lights first kick on but it's still light enough to see the lines of the bridge...bring a zoom lens. Parking is fairly limited, but it wasn't too busy when we visited on a Friday evening. There's a few other nice spots not far away if the lot is full here (Beavertail and Brenton both also provide wonderful sunset views).
Amazing views, great trails and awesome artwork!
Beautiful and peaceful park.
Always a great place to spread a beautiful day at good picnic areas and lots of places to explore
Great rock ledges and stunning views
Great for freediving and cliff jumping! Tons of parking as well
Short hikes on cliffs, beautiful fortress in ruins, interesting display of artistic graffiti
Neat old fort with tons of cool graffiti!
We go here every year to watch the fireworks. Always a great experience
Akways enjoy boat watching at the fort. The summertime offers an unique view of multitude sailboats and yachts.
We saw a replica 141 ft fishing schooner, columbia sailing thru the east narragansett bay. The 12 meter boats are always a joy to watch as well. It is a peaceful joy to enjoy the water theater of the bay
Beautiful views. Very different and segmented sections of the park that you have to either walk or drive to. The old fort looked cool but without lights inside, I was wary to explore very deep. The coves are great for divers so expect to see a lot of them here. You can also see all of the boats going to and from Newport, which is a pretty sight.
Couldn't help but go there to see the full Moon over the ocean.
Great views, favorite place to go when in the area
Had a fun time photographing the structure. Spray paint had a few more serious art pieces mixed in if you explore. Love exploring the tunnels and passageways!
This is one of my favorite spots, with a Northerly wind, you get crystal clear water!
Nice little park with decent views, when the fog isn't heavy. We enjoyed the area, and the old fort was interesting to see. It is a bare bones remnant of the fort, and there is a lot of graffiti. We did walk a little along the shore, and bushwhacked for a few geocaches. I'd like to see this place on a better day, but I doubt I'll be back through any time soon.
An abandoned Fort in Rhode Island
Beautiful area for scenic site and also amazing fishing game.
Amazing place. I love climbing the cliffs near the ocean and exploring all over. Me and my 8 friends all got a ticket for leaving like 15 minutes late so BE OUT ON TIME! The game warden is a really nice guy but he has to do his job too!
Gorgeous views an if there's a regatta going on you've got the best seats (unless of course you're on a boat). Also great fishing.
Nice and mostly private. Beautiful views of the Ocean. Too many people with unleashed dogs. No park Rangers seen. DEM police drive through seem to be more interested in fishing violations then dealing with the careless.
Historical site . You'll enjoy your time there. Also great fishing spot. 🎣 …
Gorgeous views!
You have to come see and have a great time. Relax or 🐟 fish if you want. Great place …
A perfect place for a picnic and a view
Loved going to check out the creepy tunnels and passageways in the fort. Some people don't like the graffiti, but I think it makes the place more interesting: you never know what you are going to find. Honestly I think it makes the place much more interesting and helps with landmarks to keep you fro m getting turned around. The cliffs and water are great too. Definitely recommend wearing sturdy closed for shoes!
Ft. Wetherill is absolutely one of my favorite places; it’s always nice exploring all it has to offer; which is A LOT!
Great place to visit while in the area
This is a small out of the way park on the southern end of Jamestown Island. There are cookout areas and trails leading to cliffs overlooking Narragansett Bay. There are also remnants of the fort still standing which you can access. The walls are covered in graffiti, so bring your cans of spray paint if you want to make your mark. ;-)
It's a good place to be in the winter time too but I mostly like ,fishing for squid, scup then striper not no undersize...but
We've been her several times now and there is so much to explore! Great for kids and adults but I wouldn't bring young children because some of the areas are hard to navigate and you could easily fall a good distance.
Very cool place to walk around and explore. The graffiti is very interesting and really makes this place stand out.
A very special place... plenty of bench seating overlooking Castle Hill, Fort Adams...and with the entrance to Newport harbor right there it's a great place to watch the beautiful sailing yachts coming and going... don't forget to bring binoculars and a deli sandwich.
One of the best view spots on the island. Great views of Newport and the ocean. There are also many ww2 bunkers part of Fort Wetherill that are cool to check out!
This is clearly a place to come to if you are interested in learning some history. There is so much you can learn about this place and the view of the ocean and sun setting is by far breath taking. I come here a lot to find peace and relaxation away from the city and all the drama that comes with it. Its great for picnic's and for an adventure through the FORT. Come prepared if you wanna to in the fort. Bring some flashlights with extra batteries if you plan on staying after dark. Please Enjoy a part of our HISTORY where a part of life journey began.
Great place if you love exploring and going off the beaten path. The lack of maintenance and informational signs adds to the intrigue in my opinion; you might have to do a little research on your own to explore the park's interesting historical significance. The large concrete structures were batteries constructed just prior the the United State's entry into World War II, but were supposedly never put to use. Now abandoned, the vast network of rooms and tunnels are very fun to explore if you are brave enough and have a flashlight. Although they can be hard to find, there are a lot of small trails that lead to beautiful craggy cliffs and views of the harbor, a perfect location for something like a picnic. For any Wes Anderson fans out there, the filming location of the dancing scene in his movie Moonrise Kingdom was at the westernmost cove in the park, so definitely check that out. This cove is also a great place to swim, as the water is super clear and not too cold in the summer. Overall, this park effectively captures the beauty of Rhode Island, and it is a great place to come on your own or with a few friends.
Great park with lots of trails and beautiful views. Perfect for leisurely hiking or scaling some rocks. The remnants of the fort are great to check out as well.
This state park is a beautiful place to visit was once a Seacoast battery during World War II they have a spectacular view out to the ocean looking toward Castle Hill Newport and Narragansett also there are benches to sit on at the cliff and also a boat ramp. Bathroom facility also.
Really nice park. Free parking, picnic tables, trees to hang hammocks on, grassy area to play games, scenic fort, place to scuba dive, or bike all of Jamestown from here as we did.
Great place to explore and adventure!!!
Very clean area to look around, see the sunset, and look at the leaves change. There is a lots of space so you can social distance without having to worry.
From biking, hiking and diving this fort is rich in history and peaceful grace. Picnic areas where a family ballgame may easily be played. Precious gift of open space, cherished.
Always nice. Can get a little crowded. A beautiful place to spend a day checking out the sea creatures!
I love to fish there ,it's a beutiful park
Lovely spots by the bay. Picture perfect vistas of sites in Newport and Jamestown. Old fort to explore and pleanty of rocks to climb. Don't forget the trails and beachs3.
Beautiful, historic spot right on the water. Check out the beautiful views or the strange abandoned military facilities. Would be a good destination for a bike ride adventure.
My husband and I went to the park on March 18 2014. We started our trail on The Dumplings on the East Passage of Narragansett Bay near the scuba diving area wich is a great place, amazing landscape, beautiful views and a nice place to walk and relaxation. Fortunately we spend almost all day there.
But the where the Fort is behind the picnic area, is vandalized it's full of graffiti all around it, smells like beer and is really scary, we even found a group of young drinking there. The Fort is huge and have a lot of alleys and dark rooms and is abandoned. We felt like we were walking in "Chernoby" we didn't felt secure staying there.
Hidden Gem! Incredible views with some nice trails to walk along and plenty of places to sit and take it all in.
It's a shame some douchebags leave their trash behind, and add graffiti here and there.
Overall, great place, and possibly my favorite outdoors spot in RI.
Amazing place for a day trip.
The scenery is spectacular, unfortunately the park service has not maintained it as the old fort was covered in graffiti. Obviously used for deleterious activities.
Beautiful place! Love exploring the old fort to see all the unique graffiti, some of which is stunningly beautiful, and all of which I think ought to be preserved for future archeologists to see how my generation speaks and acts, haha. The fort area is poorly maintained so its best to go in spring or fall if you wanna explore the trails; it is definitely Tick City there. Amazing views of the Bay, and can see Newport Mansions from the cliffs.
Nice place to visit to see an old bunker site. Did not like the graffiti
Nice little beach area and shallow cove for kids.
Local scuba diving destination. Used by many out-of-state folks (especially from CT.) Used by many as a scuba training site.
Parking lot get's quite crowded in the summer. Porta-John facilities in main parking lot.
From the top parking lot, you get a very nice views of Newport/Castle Hill/Brenton Point. There are benches overlooking the view, you can watch the boats come and go: power, sail, large auto-carriers, etc.
Bring sneakers and jeans, to truly appreciate some of the vistas around the fort you are going to be going through some brush. The fort itself is a haven for graffiti, some of which is beautiful artwork.
cool place to walk around
Great location for launching a small boat (kayak, Hobie, RIB) into the bay, spearfishing, scuba diving, having a picnic, or just spending a day with the kids on a quiet, uncrowded, protected, rocky beach.
Unique park, some scenic views with lovely benches to sit and enjoy. The fort is all graffitied but open to explore, bring a flashlight!
Great place! You have ability to take some great pictures over there! Would highly recommend for photographers!
Great place to go with the family great place to go site seeing also.
Great place to unwind and take long walks on the trails and view the rocky shores. Dogs love to play and chase balls in the open spaces. Nature will cure what ails ya.
Beautiful place to enjoy the sunset or listen to the waves crashing against the rocks. It gets quite breezy, bring a blanket or sweatshirt.
I have been fishing here since I was 13 and everytime im here I never go home disappointed!
Great place to bring the kids to teach about history and a good scare in the underground caves. Been going here since I was a kid. Picnic areas, fields, and bathrooms for convenience.
