Reviews of Stokes State Forest

This is my second home, I like to come over to Branchville and fill up my spring water containers, and relax in nature by the fire. Everyone is lovely and peaceful. I’ve been coming here for over 25 years to fish and hunt and just relax. I used to come every xmas, just to get away from all the gaudy consumer glam, and just decompress and go for walks. I loved that even if I was arriving late or on a holiday where they are closed they can leave you the little key in the back. Thank you for making our state parks so lovely. <3

Clean. Lots of “accommodation” options. With a picnic bench, a campfire, public restroom/ shower facility
We rented a lean-to for 2 nights
Nice trail
The pond is closed

I stayed in a lean to at Stokes State Forest Shotwell Camping area. The lean-to was great. It is basically a low cost cabin. Bring your own mat or mattress. The bathrooms were well kept. The showers were in a difference campsite but it was only a short drive. The state park itself is beautiful and offers great opportunities for boating, fishing, and hiking. The rangers and other staff were great. This would have been a 5 star experience if it were not for one thing...the water source was packed with people from neighboring communities who failed to understand that the water in their taps was the same fancy ground water they were getting from the artesian well. What they paid in gas to get this fancy water must have easily made up for the cost of water from their tap. I waited 20 min to fill up a 5 liter camel back (which took 50 seconds under the tap) because a line of locals were taking their time filling up half a dozen 5 gallon jugs each. The pumps nearby the campsite were non-functional and this being the only water source was maybe half a mile away. This wait was rather annoying for people who were actually using the water to cook at their campsite.

Amazing views, great hiking! Great spot to bring a lunch and take it all in!

FIRST: IT IS TICK SEASON! They are everywhere and we got some on us and the trail wasn't even overgrown. Aside from that... I love this park! The trails are pretty empty. It seems like most people that come here just camp but don't hike. There are 11 miles of the Appalachian trail in this park. The last time I was here I spotted a pair of black bears, today we saw a large black racer snake, some deer, and the leftovers of a skunk.
John Moorhouse
Beautiful and well run. Natural environment, not all signposted up by NJ...

This is awesome place. Very beautiful nature around. We rented a primitive camp site for RV and there was a restroom right next to it with separate shower room and separate bathroom.

Always a pleasure to visit Stokes State Forest. The wild trout streams, Stony Lake the walking and hiking trails give you ample opportunity to experience wildlife and escape.
Monique Gonzalez
I love this place grew up camping, fishing and hiking here with my grandparents and parents and brother. No, electricity since someone asked me. Yes, cellphones have signal.
Thomas Marino
very nice remote state park. lots of space. You might want to get a map because you can drive a long way. Lots of nice trails with access to the AT as well. I've stayed in the Shotwell area (lean-to's) and Lake Ocquittunk area (cabins) both are well kept. No showers in the Shotwell area. The lean-to's are really an enclosed shelter with a woodstove (nothing else)
Ami Moody
Winter camping wonderland. Bring a tent or stay in a cabin/lean to with a wood burning stove that kept us super toasty at 25 degrees out!
Quiet, Serene, and bathrooms are open!

Stokes State Forest checks off a surprising number of boxes: miles of the Appalachian Trail contained within its borders? Check. Spectacular views of sunrise and sunset from the appropriately named Sunrise Mountain? Check. Scenic lakes that are perfect for swimming or serving as a backdrop for a barbecue? Check. A fire tower that one is likely not allowed to climb (despite the fact that many will)? Check. Ample evidence of the excellence of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)? Check. An abandoned copper mine, minus old coots talking about days gone by in Sioux City? Check. An ancient, destroyed sawmill guarded by Groot? Check. A state forest that has far more in the way of possibility and amenities than most state parks? Check.
Did I mention that one can often gain admittance to this state forest for free?
What are you waiting for? Sunrise is calling.
Michelle Urban
Some of the best hiking and camping in north Jersey! Sunrise Mountain has amazing views and it's a short walk from the parking lot to the pavilion. Please practice leave no trace when you visit.
Wayne Ruben
Camped in Shotwell camping area. Stayed at the dead end area. Lots of distance between sites, but you need to use the outhouses. They are old school dig out ones. The two closed water spickets are not working so it's a treck for water to put out your fire and quick rinse.
Wil Torres
Such a beautiful place to hike. They have multiple trails of all levels and lots of areas to venture off and explore. Definitely check this place out it’s worth the drive and you’ll feel great after!
Edward Zukowitz
We rented a cabin at Stokes State Forest for Thanksgiving. The cabin was warm and cozy. The park is huge and offers a lot for the outdoors person. The staff at the park are friendly and helpful. We had a great time at Stokes.
Ryan Guderian
My son's and I went in a camping trip with our Trail Life patrol and it was epic! We saw a lot of wildlife, including a garter snake, salamanders, and a bob cat!
Pritesh Shah
Enjoyed this beautiful park for a scenic drive through the sunrise mountain road leading to the sunrise mountain scenic overlook. Also drove by Ashorf lake across the street. Nice time to see fall foliage.
Tom Carnevale
Sunrise mountain is a beautiful place to visit this time of year. Fall foliage. A lot of visitors limited parking.

Stokes State Forest has four campgrounds. The Steam Mill Camping Area is tucked out the of the way and is the most primitive. It is the smallest of the campgrounds with 27 sites only suitable for tents or small trailers/campervans. No pets or alcohol allowed.
The campground has a pit toilet and a well. Each large campsite has a picnic table, fire pit, and lantern hook. Some sites also have a tent platform. Many sites are a bit rocky.
We selected site T219. It was a solid choice: private but close to the toilet and water. Some sites located around the opposite side of the ring back up to a babbling brook. The rushing water will soothe you to sleep.
Remember, this is bear country so proper food storage is a must. Bear lockers are not provided. The area also has ticks and rattlesnakes.
Outdoor activities in the area abound. Go fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, and more. There are 21 marked trails that cover over 63 miles within the boundaries of Stokes State Forest. Twelve miles are part of the Appalachian Trail. Pick up a hiking map at the park office or download the Avenza Maps app.
This visit we hiked the Tillman Ravine trail (tip: make the trail a loop and visit both the ravine and the nearby old cemetery).
You can also drive or hike to Sunset Mountain Scenic Overlook for a view of High Point Monument. High Point Monument is the highest elevation in New Jersey and is located in High Point State Park which borders Stokes State Forest on the north. High Point State Park also offers camping, hiking, sightseeing opportunities. And, on the western border of Stokes State Forest is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. So, there is lots of outdoors to get out and explore!

A beautiful nature reserve. It is home to many animals, birds and insects. How nice to walk along the shady paths and listen to the birds singing))
Denise Arriaga
I looooooooove it here!!!! The best therapy ever.
Nicole R. Alvarez
Great for car camping! The hikes were beautiful and the restrooms and water are very accessible.
Mary
Such a beautiful place to walk or even to just sit by the water.
Sean Stimac
Nice place, easy hiking. There's fluorescent sodalite in this park, which is pretty cool.
JONATHAN BITTENCOURT
Nice little hiking trail
Robin Hutson
really love this park... it's so vast for hiking or a nice drive through... plus it is a secret source for natural artisanal water... shhhh - don't tell anyone!!
Cheyenne Bilge
Very pretty here, went here for 4-H Camp, and was possibly one of the best weeks I have had in my entire life! The lake was so pretty, the trails were really interesting and new, the nature was amazing, you felt like you were with nature, and the feeling with the fresh air is so nice! I can't wait to come back soon!
Peter K
Arrived at my campsite to find previous campers have misused the site. Littered with garbage, multiple fire pits with garbage. Why do people think that their mommys will clean up after them? Why do they feel so good to trash a public space that gets shared with others. This time I became your mommy! You bad people need to stay away from parks if you cannot use it with respect. Cities have sanitation people that clean up after you, stop your ignorant life and crack a book on taking care our environment. Stay home!
Nathan Cox-Bien
Pretty nice campsites that aren't too close together. Had slim pickings for trees to hang my hammock from, though.
David von Doehren
Hot day in May but it was nice and cool under the trees and along Stony Brook.
Ernie Peralta
Great campsite but the bathroom near site T225 was the stuff of nightmares. Since our site was close to the bathroom, we would hear other campers scream or gag when entering the bathroom.
Suzanne Monkemeier
Great place to gather safely outdoors! Rent the pavilion and enjoy! Clean and accessible restrooms with flush toilets. A stone fireplace available. The park 🏞️ is beautiful with hiking trails. The park is very well maintained. …
pallbearers1969
Been here over 20x since the mid 80s....best place to camp and hike.
Herviss1
Great location, beautiful stream and falls.
Great walk for a summer day, very shady area good place to hide from the heat.
Tom Hoos
So many great spots in Stokes. Was checking out the comet tonight. Great to get away from the light pollution.
Michele Kane
Beautiful state forest home to buttermilk falls.
Howard Liebmann
Great place to hike. 17 mile Blue Mountain Loop Trail. Tower Trail has great westward view at the top near the AT. Nice cabins for camping and great fishing in the Flat Brook!
Tony Miehle
Came on a vacation that is including a lot of short hikes in several state parks. Enjoyed the couple of hours we were here
Hiker_Explorer
Actually, I give Sunrise mountain 5 stars but, the rest of the park is pretty good! I have not been to Sunrise mountain and Stokes Forest since I was a kid. Went there yesterday for a hike but, the road to the summit was closed for whatever reason? Which is strange because I don't remember that happening before,,, did find a trail eventually, it was unseasonably warm, a beautiful day for a hike. Great place for camping, and boating too on the lakes nearby.
Sangam Patel
Beautiful location for your camping getaway. The log cabins are nice if you can book them in advance. Having the amenities available for your camping trip is a big bonus. There are several things to do around the area and you do have to watch out for bears and raccoons and all sorts of nature. There are lakes to go fishing but make sure you have your freshwater fishing license. It is a great location to just go and detach from society for even a short stay.
Kathleen Mueller
I love this place! Great for hiking, especially recommend the blue trail, it takes you along a nice Creek for a lot of the way! Plenty of trails and little parks for picnics as well as sunrise mountain if you feel like going uphill for a beautiful view!
Matthew Barr
This magnificent State Park is home to a very popular natural spring where I get my water, which is the only thing I drink. What a well kept place and wonder of nature
John Bond
This is my wife's go-to place for rest and relaxation. We take the dog for long walks. Take the kids for kayak rides and long walks. We often bring a cooler with drinks and a few meals packed. Sometimes we rent a cabin and stay the week. Sometimes we go fishing here.
Kenneth Decker
It's a beautiful reserve, every time I am charmed by its beauty.
E Rooster
Beautiful, especially this time of year(late October)
Jasmin Martino
Beautiful, peaceful and relaxing.
TILLERY
Such a beautiful reserve, I can't get enough of its extraordinary beauty.
Kim Painter
Fun family trip. We love the quiet and the cabins. They could be cleaned alittle better. Lots of hiking trails near by. State Fair in the summer. Bushkill falls. Prices are great for the cabins. Lots of wildlife. Deer throughout the woods and even a raccoon that likes to steal marshmallows off the table when you are toasting at the fire.
Austin
If someone randomly told me this was NJ I wouldn't believe them. It's so unreal the beauty of this area. The layout is lovely and there is plenty of space to get lost in the woods. Lots of trails and streams to explore. Humans have done a good job at not destroying the place with garbage. I look forward to seeing more sunrises and sunsets at this natural location.

Streams, scenery is amazing, its CLEAN!! BATHROOMS ARE CLEAN!! SMELL GOOD!!That's a PLUS anywhere! I appreciated how peaceful and clean it was! Thank you! 😊🥰

My family went camping in Stokes State Forrest. We went hiking at Tillman Ravine which is a nice hike area along a stream. We saw some animals such as newts and a toad. There were also bright colored mushrooms around the path. We rented a cabin at Stokes for the night. The cabin was nice and in good condition. All in all we had a great experience.
Antonio Gil
Great place to spend a couple days relaxing with the family. Fishing, hiking plenty of nature and animals to see.
Joshua Benitez
Just got back from a weekend at their group campsite and I love it! Already loved their hiking trails but forgot that their group campsites are so wonderful! The view of the stars at night were AMAZING!! Counted 5 shooting stars in 15 minutes. Each group site is all open ground without any obstructions for the sky. They are divided by the other group sites by bushes and trees, so you have your privacy.
Tip: When you check in at the office, check out the chalkboard that they have with present and upcoming events at their park. For example, we didn't read that they had archery or guided hikes.
Jessica Stewart
Had a wonderful experience camping in Stokes Shotwell area this past weekend and wanted to highly recommend it! We had a group of six adults on two sites, #110 and #112. These are technically next to each other as you go down the road, but are not directly side by side, are maybe 30 yrds apart through dense woods.
Both sites were great: spacious, level, and wooded densely on three sides so that you really felt like you were tucked away and secluded. There was a large pond about a 1/4 mile behind site #112, and the trees all around were beautiful!
These sites were about a 5 minute walk from the restrooms, where there are 4-5 flush toilets, warm running water, mirrors, and hand driers. No showers in this area. The showers are miles away, in a totally different part of the state park, about a 10-15 minute drive away, so if you are the kind of camper that requires a shower then prepare to drive or camp in the group sites that are next to that bathhouse.
We drove to Sunset Mountain lot (ask in ranger station for easy driving directions) for hiking. We hiked to the pavilion lookout, which was really simple. It is a low grade climb, but rocky. Took only 10 minutes or so to reach the top from the parking lot. The better walk, by far, was the few miles we walked out and back on the Appalachian Trail. There were a few lovely spots for a group lunch stop, and we did that at about 2 1/2 miles out.
I would highly recommend the sites we stayed in!
Morgan Ulrich
We had a great trip and stayed in Cabin 13. Cabins are super clean and very well maintained. The park is nice for hiking.

Amazing. Lots to see Wildlife. REMEMBER THIS IS WILDLIFE WHERE Many different animals, Insects, turtles, snakes, spiders, bears etc live- This is THEIR LAND- RESPECT IT As if you were having someone coming into your own house , Apartment (crib). Other generations need to enjoy the beauty. Thanks🍀🌹💒 …
Justin Ricardo
An excellent state park with lots of trails, camping spots, lookouts and scenery! A must visit if you like scenic views of the sunrise and sunset
Rosa Tolentino
Very nice place. Some trailheads have parking for about 20 cars, some don't have parking at all. There are creeks, small waterfalls, public flushable restrooms, and picnic areas with grills.
Hampton Zoo
Really nice place to reconnect with nature! Can drive to Kettle Field, Stony Lake for a quick dip, hike around the Appalachian Trail or Sunrise Mountain where you can watch the sun rise or set, camping is available Spring - Fall. Fabulous Fall foliage brings many to the area. You can drive or bike(if you are adventurous and like a great workout) to Highpoint, Sawmill Lake, Lake Marsha and see the Highpoint Monument. The school of conservation is a few miles down the road. Tillman's ravine is located across the way on Struble Road. The quaint towns of Layton, Bevons, and Walpac are just down the way off 206. If you care to wander further, there is Buttermilk Falls, the Historical town of Walpac, the Flatbrook which is a popular with the local fishmen, and so much more. .....Life is not a spectator's sport! Get out there!!
PJ K
Nice peaceful place. Good hike & walking trails.
Nick W
Stokes is a treasure, and there are hikes for all ages and skill levels. I highly recommend spending a day here!
Jon Black
Great drive though the forest. So quiet and peacefull. Found a bird I did not recognize.
Ben Geffken
We go a free times a year for a long weekend camping trip. The tent, leanto, cabin sites are always well kept. The leantos aren't really leantos since they have for walls and have a small since for heat. The cabins are more still equipped with a kitchen and toilet. The bathrooms in some sites are cleaner than others.
Magnus Been
Stokes is a great forest area. Go there often. Beautiful hiking trails with mountain views, brooks and river. Nice camping areas .

I've been brought up going up to Sussex Co. NJ for 44 years. (I'm from the New Brunswick area.) We have been officially camping (tent and now cabins) for 25 years. The park is a huge multifaceted natural area. If you can imagine, its location is as follows: foothills of the Appalachian Mountain range, east of the Pocono Plateau, South of High Point State Park (e.i. highest above sea level point of NJ), and about 25 minutes from Port Jervis (where the tri-states NJ, PA and NY meet).
There are many other beautiful areas within range but not within Stokes. Peter's Valley, Dingmans Ferry and just up the road Tillmans Ravine and The Boy Scout Camp. Fishing is plentiful. The mountain range lends to plenty of hiking. My two favorite trails: Tillmans Ravine which is a slow decent criss-crossing and following along a beautiful stream where the foliage is abundantly colorful and lush. This, as mentioned above is not within in Stokes but just down the road. And Tower Trail located on Sunrise Mountain. This trail has some amateur rock climbing. It is a slow climb up to a beautiful summit overlooking the Pocono Plateau to the West and High Point State Park to the north.
This is also a major trail tributary on the Appalachian Trail. Many times we've met back packers who have left from Main and are on there way down south. It is very cool. Recreationally speaking, there is plenty of fishing, hiking, pristine camp grounds, a swimming lake, and then some. I think what most people may not realize being as it is in Jersey is that the scenary and nature rival any of its big brothers such as the Poconos, Catskills, Adirondacks etc.
The rangers and all staff have always been on point, they will check up on you and make sure everything is ok. They are knowledeable and professional and friendly. We camp at Stokes State Forest every year and absolutely love it. It is part of one of our family's most important traditions. There is so much more I could write but I will leave it at this for now.
Incidentally, we are leaving for our Annual spring camp out at Stokes in just two days. I can't wait!!

I Love This place, first time we came, but for sure wont be the last, the bathrooms could be a little difficult to find, the signs could be better, they need tobwork in make it easier but I have not other complaints
Jorge Matias Caviglia
One of the best NJ State Parks. Mountains, views, streams, lakes, many hiking trails, campgrounds, cabins. We hiked part of the new Blue Mountain Loop train and we are planning to go back to do the whole loop.
