Reviews of Stephens State Park
This is a nice park developed around the gently flowing river Musconetcong. The waters are calm and peaceful. No swimming or wading is allowed but fishing is allowed. The park is kid and pet friendly and wheel chair accessible. The red trail is stroller / wheel-chair friendly. The other trails are challenging. We saw many people exploring the area on mountain bikes.
There are a lot of nice picnic spots by the river. The added bonus are the two play areas for kids. One was very close to our campsite and the other was at the start of the red trail on the other side of the park. There were lots of birds and I guess this is a great spot for bird-watching.
We started in the yellow trail which led into the red trail ending us with the orange trial. The trial markers were great for the yellow and red, but the orange trial the markers were not fully there. They are either hidden or missing. We had a map with us, which they provide at the bulletin board. I highly recommend grabbing a map before starting any trails. Although there are no scenic views or waterfalls, the trial does provide for a nice walk through the forest. As always watch for wild life and leave them alone. This is a carry in-carry out park. Parking can be tight as well.
A delightful fall day for a walk in the park. Peaceful and quiet with the exception of the leaves crunching beneath my feet. Get out and go for a walk. 👍 …
Big trees, beautiful walks by the creek, clean campsites and toilets/showers. Close to Hackettstown and other towns.
Camped at the campground on a weekend in May 2021 and had a wonderful time. We hiked part of the Highland Trail and enjoyed the varied terrain and sights along the trail. We saw people fishing, groups picnicking and a few people hiking. It was very serene and the people were all respectful. There are picnic spots with tables and grills available, just make sure to bring your grill cleaning materials and table and bench covers.
This area has a nice quick walk, but with a decent incline. The area is absolutely beautiful, between the river and mountain.
There is an adorable pagoda that you can rent, inexperienced and super cute!
My friends and I camped there a couple weeks ago. We were deep in the woods, many feet away from civilization experiencing mother nature first hand. The dangers of the untamed forest surrounded us, wild noises and creatures were all around, we were one with our surroundings. Dan ran out of Doritos so he ate a squirrel for diner on Saturday, he "Bare Grilled" that little guy, we are now afraid of Dan.
Orange trail was a great workout; steep and relatively short (less than an hour) - Just be careful not to slip on leaves or mossy rocks. I can see why the Highlands Trail is so popular. So many picnic tables and BBQ spots besides a calming river.
Great place for a family picnic. Lots of picnic tables and BBQs. The playground was closed due to the pandemic and that is understandable. The bathrooms were very clean, but they also closed at 3pm. Other than that, the hiking trails, the water, bridges, trees...Everything was awesome. It is in my favorite spots list. I really wish we could camp there, but the campsites are closed for the season.
The greatest spot in NJ
A gorgeous little park tucked away in Allamuchy, Warren, County NJ
Enjoy the peaceful brook, wildlife and birds.
Picnic, fish, enjoy a nature trail. Full bathrooms, bbqs, park swings, slide, picnic tables. Wonderful hidden gem.
Cool trail to walk on, we love the river and the fishing it is a little dirty sometimes with the trash, I wish they had a better map so we knew where to walk. Some of the trails were closed for some reason. But it was ok for a walk with the dog.
Had my first visit there and it was amazing! Very resonable fee for camping grounds. Definitely going back. Going to the bathroom at night with all the bugs/webs around the entrance creeped me out a bit. Loved the trails and the river that we fished out of. Overall amazing place to relax and planning on going again next month!
Beautiful place but many of the structures are being closed down down for no reason at all.. Let it be and please keep it open for all for us hikers that need a place for peace and restoration thank you
Awesome place to spend time alone or with family and friends. Obviously, with the river running through the area, fishing is just one thing you can enjoy. There are also trails that will have you exploring the woods or finding a picnic table with a cookout grill nearby to enjoy.
There is also a museum on site as well as uniform employees who are trail and park guides I believe. Contrary to its name; this is NOT a "park" where you'll find swing sets or sliding boards and kids playing on the monkey bars.
However, Stephens State Park is the traditional state parks you'll find here in both Sussex and Warren counties. If you're looking for some peace and quite near water and nature that doesn't cost you anything to enter. As in all NJ State parks you must bring your own trash bags with you because the park does NOT have any garbage cans for you to dump your garbage into.
So, pack a lunch or bring some burgers to cook. You can have a good time and your kids will get an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature and Stephens State Park, and all that it offers.
Peaceful state park. We camped here and the experience was amazing. They have good facilities and it's well-maintained.
Beautiful state park. Great place to bring the dog and get outside.
What a beautiful and peaceful place. The only thing if you want a nice spot for some grilling and tables get there early otherwise you may find a grill but no table at all.
Nice small park.. some sites are close together. Trout fishing is available
love this little park, great place for walking, riding bike and fishing, water is so clean and very relaxing place with great views and plenty of places to seat, grill some food and enjoy your day
My local State Park is a real gem! Beautifully maintained & a joy to hike in. One of my fav spots is the Eagle Scout island, just lovely!
One way in and one way out which isn't normally a problem but for some reason, there's always that one person going the wrong way in a one way here. Anyway, the park is quite large that opens out for picnicking and family outings of all shapes and sizes. I'd recommend you come early for the best spots of course because once people set up, they usually stay all day. This is like most state parks, a dry park so dont try to bring in booze or you will be asked to leave and there's a station in the parking lot. Adjacent to the park station is the bathrooms for those wondering and it's a building, not a portable toilet. There are definitely fish in the river but I was not lucky enough to catch one but I will be back soon.
Best park ever, clean bathrooms, nice decent size
camping 🏕️ area, with play ground and volleyball net to spend time with love ones. …
This is primitive forest with some narrow roads leading into trailheads, but it is a beautiful pet friendly area.
Great park for camping & walking around. There’s a beautiful stream that runs through the campground. It’s also dog friendly! Neat little spot we found.
What a beautiful place, nice trails, used to fish here in the past and it was great. Nice family place for a outing.
Peaceful place, perfect for picnic, meditation, fishing for trout, bringing your family, your love and a leashed dog. Clean bathroom. Great parking area. Bring your water shoes for stepping inside the slow moving river. Lots of birds and fish but also mosquitoes. Bring your spray to keep mosquitoes away from your skin. Also bring citronella incense or water with cloves to keep the little flying creatures off you. We also saw lots of big butt ants! So be careful if your using flip flops! And that's my 5 cents!
Its beautiful. Signage could be better. Road needs repaving. This park is small, there are bigger parks in the area with more to do, but I like it.
Best campsite to date. Great showers. Clean bathroom. Potable water and a sink to clean your dishes.
Beautiful easy trail by the stream. No swimming allowed but plenty of fishing spots. Perfect forest walk for our boys and their nets.
After a long bike ride hang the hammock and relax with the sound of the river . Just perfect !!!
This park is a surprising oasis, but the trails are not well tended to, so I was worried about ticks and did not wander too far.
Lovely place with a lots of shaded sitting areas along the river. Nice playground & restrooms nearby.
Lots of trails, some quite long. Lot of up and down but nothing crazy. We go often to enjoy the stream and so often have the trails to ourselves. Even has a flat path along the river for when we walk with my mother.
Lovely picnic area along a stream, nice hiking. It's bigger than it originally looks. We visited in May and saw lots of wild flowers and watched a great blue heron catch a fish. The camping area has bathrooms and showers and 40 or so camping spots with trees. Unfortunately, The camping area has some road noise.
I love this place for its water flow serenity and calmness
Well maintained trails for any level of expertise. Leashed dogs welcome but be sure to pick up and carry out any waste. Great restroom facilities at the main trailhead. Scout projects dot the park. There's a charming tranquility island that sits in the river at the trailhead. Perfect for a contemplative hike.
Love it here. Trails are great. Even if some of them get paved a little too much.
Nice little park near Hackettstown, only 4 stars because it started getting crowded before I left and there were no trash cans.
Great park with a variety of trails to explore. There's fishing spots and picnic tables and charcoal grills along the river. Lots of interesting wildflowers and plants to discover including Mayapples and bloodroot.
There's a lovely place to sit near the river up near the parking lot. You cross a bridge to a little 'island' that was a Boy Scout project. It's shaded and calm and a good place to gather your thoughts.
Beautiful environment! Fishing or enjoy the trails
Great Place to camp, fish and hike!
Very nice place to go for a walk take your dog it'll love it
Camping was average to below average. Review for campsite #35: first , you essentially share a site with #37 as they must walk through yours to get to their site. Site 37 is behind 35. Secondly, at night you hear a major roadway and the train that cuts through the park. One restroom facility which was somewhat clean, with two out of three showers functioning for the park. Not the worst ever by far and did the job. Some camp sites #33 and #39 are very large and offer some great space.
Very close and convenient to great hiking / mountain biking. Staff were friendly, helpful and responsive to any request. Unsure if the water from the pumps were potable. Plenty of fun geocaching sites. Would stay there again, but a different camp site.
Great tucked away little park meandering along the Musky. Great lil walking paths, benches and pretty easy access to the river if you wish to do some fishing.
Very tranquil spot. Some soil erosion has made the surface of the small island rather uneven with some exposed tree roots so care needed if you have mobility problems.
This was a clean and very pretty park. There is a river stream right on camp grounds where we could fish and dip our feet. Our site was nice and spacious. The rangers were friendly and helpful. Although there we quiet hours, we had no problem keeping our camp fire on late as well as play music quietly. All of us really enjoyed our weekend here. We would definitely come back!
One of the best camping sites I have seen so far. Little hike down to the river was amazing.
This campground is very nice, quiet, not crowded and very green. We walked down to the river, there is one facility with bathrooms and showers.
Great place for a quick nature rub. Dogs welcome and very well taken care of.
Stayed at the camp sites. Overall a nice state park. The campsites are well secluded from the day picnickers and the ranges do a good job patrolling the area to keep out non campers. The camp sites are some what disconnected from the river, but there is a path to take to get there. The river is fun to Wade in, but it's not for boating or even much swimming. Some campsites are close to each other, but it seems that not many people camp out there, so we have been pleasantly surprised by how few people are around us. The bathrooms are also top notch. Overall a local and fun family adventure area. The playground has also been a big hit.
Very nice super clean park with a beautiful lake. Approximately a one mile wide smooth asphalt path surrounds the lake for easy walking, running or bike riding. Very well maintained.
We went to Stephens for camping. Like all State-owned campgrounds, Stephens is a victim of decades of underfunding. Bittersweet and poison ivy are overtaking the edges of every site. The sites are filled with smaller bits of garbage like bottle caps and plastic bits. However, all the requirements for drive-up camping are in place and it's convenient that you are only about half a mile from a hospital and downtown.
Beautiful park. Nice trails to hike or mountain bike . Place for the children to play & the parents to sit & relax. Public restrooms in a case of a pit stop. There is a cool little island in the river right by the parking lot too. Its clean except for the occasional lazy dog owner. The park is whatever you bring in you take out. Nice escape for a couple hours.
Beautiful park with nicely maintained paths for walking, a cool playground by the river, and lots of places to bbq (charcoal grills with picnic tables). There are some interesting plants like bloodroot and mayapple during the warmer months.
Just don't fall into the many potholes on the road that passes through the park. Some of them are giant. (It does help us all respect the posted speed limit, though.)
Make sure you explore the areas directly around the parking lot, there are a few beautiful discoveries to be made.
Stephens is beautiful in a few spots but kind of lacking in others. The view of the river near the bridge is gorgeous. The playground is run down. Camping here not my favorite. Sites are close together and you can hear cars on the road. The picnic tables seem like they've been there for a few decades. It's a decent spot to relax and have lunch but that's about it.
Beautiful public park! There is a shabby old playground, but if you keep walking up, there is also a much nicer newer playground. It is a very scenic, peaceful, relaxing place. They also offer camping. We smelled some kids smoking pot in the woods near the playground, and then get into a car and drive away (badly), so perhaps the police should do some more patrols in the park.
Very nice. Large area. Pond. Swing set. Respect wildlife. Read up on some encounters you may come across. Do not feed any animal. Keep the park clean for the wilderness too. NO SMOKING
Cute little camping area and it's allows dogs at certain sites!
Really a beautiful spot I like to fish there and it's well stocked with trout. Sometimes it's over crowded and hard to find a spot on the weekends but that's because it is a great spot for hiking and fishing.
It's a great fishing spot
Loved the trails, especially along the river/creek. It has several trail options for hikers, bikers, and horses. The staff was very friendly and helpful, too, with trail recommendations. Also saw people maintaining the trails and campsites.
The park is very nice, lots of birds and the noise of the trees.
The site is very beautiful with hiking trails. There were only 3 showers: One was not working, one was not locking. We used the third one and the water was cold. We were also surprised that there was no dumping station but we found out it is because the site is mostly for tents. There is a park for kids and a volley ball field. Alot of pick nick areas along the water. The man working at the office (Frank?) was very nice. He waited for us to arrive even if his day was finished and he gave us alot of advices for travelling to New York city.
This park has a little bit of everything. Good place to park and read a book in the shade of the trees. Easy flat trails and difficult trails nearby up the mountain. Has a welcome/info center and bathrooms. Musconetcong river running right thru it. Great all around park.
Nice place, hard to catch trout as the water current is too high, lots of bugs and spider.
Nice river in front of the parking lot with a picnic area. Many trails for hiking or mountain biking. Good workout either way depending on which trail you use. Follow the river past the parking lot to get to the playground for the kids. There is also a camping area here if you want to spend the night to explore.
you only listen the sound of stream. Do nothing but you relax and peaceful.
Loved our walk with our Pup!! The Red trail is just under a mile and the Boy Scouts provided lovely benches to take a rest. It is an easy trail with some slight ruggedness....
Nice, wide-open campsites, good bathrooms and showers, good playground and very pretty river. As state park facilities go, this is up there.
Don't listen to the guy who apparently knows nothing about the state park rules. Be smart and be gracious to your fellow campers. You came off like the obnoxious camper we tend to experience at campgrounds. As for the camping yes it is close to the road but for the advanced mountain biker it is awesome. 30 plus miles of well kept singletrack right out of you campsite. A must for any mountain biker with 2 more parks that you can loop all 3 together for a 50 to 80 miles of awesome riding.
One of my personal favorite local birding spots. I've found different types of warblers around this area, specially along the Musconetcong river on the Highlands trail and on the trail leading upto the campground. The red trail is good for a moderate hike, and the orange trail is more steeper but not too difficult. I heard many orioles and tanagers there. There are some grills and picnic tables along the river, and its a beautiful setting. Great place to hang out on a good summer day.
A beautiful oasis especially on a cool fall day
I Love Stephens State Park and have been going there for years for walks, picnics, and family reunions. As time goes by more and more people have discovered this piece of nature with the picnic tables and grills so getting there early in the day has become manditory. You must carry out what you bring in and it's a no swimming stream. Fishing is ok and the stream is stocked.
Nice picnic area along the river, a good network of hiking trails (which could be marked better).
Open all year round, excellent trails, very pretty and friendly place.
Beautiful place. Didn't catch any trout
Lot's of Hiking. Plenty of Barbecue and Picknick Area's. Big Gazebo Area with Table's. Playground for Children near Parking Lot. Campground's seem very close together and overly crowded. Deffinitely Car Camping 🏕️ and not Real Back Country Camping 🏕️. …
We go hiking and do BBQ sometimes, so Beautiful ~
Always love this place. Dog friendly and we'll maintained. Grounds are always clean and free of garbage. Great for walks along trails or a day of bbq and fishing with the family 😃 …
Beautiful area, tricky to get to. I sat by the river and a friendly older gentleman was on the other side of a riverbank playing guitar. We waved at each other and I meditated on his songs and the lapping of the water. Would do again.
Beautiful river in some sections others just to many bbq sites one after the other can't imagine it on a busy weekend stick to during the week and enjoy the river
We had an awesome time here for our church picnic...everybody loved this park...we usually prefer state parks with lake,so our kids can have fun...well here's the best thing about this park...the trail walk will make us realize the beauty of the nature just the way God created...if you want to go relax, enjoy the nature and have a good time with your family and friends....this is your park...we will definitely come back next year for summer...
A hidden gem of a park. Very relaxing!
Great hiking trail
Picturesque setting along the Musconetcong River. A live post card. Picnic tables, stocked fishing, hiking trails, a children's playground.
Tons of mtn bike trails, most are well maintained
An absolute beautiful place to hike, picnic or just relax by the river. Camping is seasonal. Limited parking as of now.
It is. Free to enter free to park they supply BBQ grills tables bathrooms and it's all kept very clean and the scenery is gorgeous
Great place to relax and camp but no water, dumping or electricity and the showers are ... not too warm. It is awesome for day rest and ok for few nights.
Nice trail to walk with children not to difficult there are 4 streams you need to cross to go see the old car. But are not difficult to cross.
We didn't walk around much but it was so beautiful by the river. My daughter was so amazed by the water and sound.
I go there often to fly fish , beautiful park , camping and picnicking ..
Affordable daily rates. Great camping sites. Clean bathroom. Trails hikes available.
Very nice park ! It be better if other people would take care of the bathroom
Nice place to get away from the urban sprawl of Hackettstown. :) It's an enjoyable park. Make sure you have a map, or that you download the area ahead of time - cell service was spotty, but you don't go to a state park for cell service.
Clean, well kept, beautiful scenery
The trails are nice but they become muddled and unclear in places especially when you are near the carparks.
A beautiful place to walk, run, picnic, swim or just spend the day with nature. I'd recommend it highly if I wasn't worried you'd all come. 😊 …
complete with the lovely little campground this little state park has a lot to offer period fishing and hiking and plenty of photography opportunities.
Awesome campground for families with small children. It is only about 1.5 hours away from NYC. Very convenient for residents of the 5 boroughs of NYC.
Great place for camping! and lots of interesting hiking trails.
Great place to camp near NYC. Lots of hiking trails
Very unique place. lots of hiking paths - very well marked. Picnik tables and grills available.
I really love coming here when I just need to distress and relax. It's a very beautiful park 🏞️ …
Beautiful
Easily accessible and great walking and hiking trails. Great place for a picnic.
Always love going there but parking and the road along the river has way too many pot holes. Inconvenient and dangerous. Please repair.
One of my favorites for kayaking. Start above Saxton Lake at the abandoned store. Head upstream.
Overall sites are relatively smaller than other camping site in NJ and located near the road.
Trails were well maintained and marked. Benches are spaced along the trail.Very enjoyable time.
Very nice park! Lots of picnic tables to have a nice day along the waters edge.
Park was beautiful. Camp sites were clean bathrooms were clean , hicking trail was great . We will return
Great place to camp, hike, hangout near the water, etc.
Really nice people that work there too.
Very cool lots of people fishing
Beautiful place for a walk along a rambling stream or up through the trails in the mountains
Nice spot for kids & family in summer
Great hike! Make sure you know which trail you want to follow!
Good mountain biking here. Narrow single track. Smoother with flow. Some fun rock features here and there.
Have camped here and fished. Nice relaxing spot. Well maintained facilities.
Very clean, beautiful park. Pet friendly and nice trails.
Great park, you can fish, you can hike, you can hunt. Good trails for all
Heated restrooms, well marked trails, adequate parking in paved lot, good place to start a day hike
Some nice hiking trails along the river and facilities like picnic tables, playgrounds, and camping.

The current was so fast but was still relaxing and a good place to fish.
Perfectly peaceful.. trails.. water.. we stay the whole day.. me & my fur-babies..
Great trails and water for your dog. It's definitely one of his favorite places to go!
Love this place. Nice and quiet.
A Perfect place to relax and connect with nature
Nice place to go. Good trail to walk or ride your mountain bike.
Since childhood, the best place to go to get away from it all and into nature for some nice scenery, or a walk through the woods.
Nice mtb trails!
Beautiful park with lots of trails. Also a beautiful section of the Musconetcong river.
Not very busy when I was there. Perfect place for grilling by the river.
It's a huge state park full of trails and nature. Its unfortunate some people chose to use this as their personal dumping ground for waste.
Very nice park especially on a hot day.
Need to fix mens urinal. Minus that nice park. Bbq spots
Nice view. Secret trail.
Use Insect repellent’s
Quiet state park. Campsites are a little close together. Good trout fishing
We love to play in the river on a HOT summer day, plus the river trail is neat to follow
Easy walking, plenty of picnic tables along the trail.

Gorgeous. Small local fishing hole. Great to sit with your significant other.
