Reviews of Bear Mountain State Park
Thomas McDermott
What a great escape from the busy city life! Just a quick drive away and you can find yourself feeling like you're thousands of miles away. Tons of trails, ranging from easy to hard, short to long. Great for families or solo adventurists. All seasons activities are scheduled so check their website to see what's going on. Trails are well maintained and clean, you won't see piles of trash around the park.

A beautiful place for a day trip from NYC. It’s in the upstate NY and good for a summer barbecue or fun in the pool. There are also a zoo and trails for hiking. A lot of trees and mountains for the peace of mind and natural serene. There is a gift shop that sells unique collections and a hotel to stay in the night. There is also a restaurant and a few vending machines to buy snacks from. However, it’s better to buy foods from outside as the prices are a bit high.
Don’t forget proper dresses for the pool. The drive to the place was also enjoyable because of the zigzag road surrounded by plethora of trees.

We did the AllTrails version - 3.8 mile loop trail. The 1,154 ft elevation made a huge difference for us flat land Long Islanders. Took us about 4.5 hours to finish. Beautiful trails, a treat for photographers. Well maintained and clean. Appreciated the water vending machine at the Tower as by then we had finished all the water we started with.

sometimes we need to get away from the concrete jungle (routine and city) to be able to connect with nature.
This place is magical and transmits a very beautiful peace. If you want to start hiking, this place can be your first experience 🐻⛰️ …

The famous Bear Mountain is so famous that it is always crowded. We went on a Friday morning and yet the parking lot was already full. We can understand as it is so beautiful up there, and it is the peak fall foliage, cars just arrived non-stop, both at the foot or on top of the mountain.

I have been to Bear Mountain State Park since I was a child, & always loved it. It's absolutely beautiful there! I went with my Mother, Father, Brother, & one of my Niece's in 2018 for my 27 year old birthday. That's exactly where I wanted to go, & enjoy the outside. Had a wonderful time, & happy that my Niece got to see Bear Mountain State Park for her first time. It's always been very well taken care of. The State Park Police are always making sure it's safe as well. Forest Rangers are a plus to.
It's A Wonderful State Park. 🙂
James Hsieh
A beautiful picture perfect spot for over looking the entire mountains and water view! But there’s no parking space on the site, you need to park somewhere further and then walk down for few minutes to get here. A lot of people just parking on the drive way which was extremely dangerous for the curvy mountain driveway. Need to be careful and mindful for the people walking around taking pictures.
Liliya Savich
Beautiful state park, lots of different trails, walk ways and picturesque views, both easy and difficult. There is Bear Mountain Inn where you can spend the night and a restaurant on the property. Definitely lots of walking and hiking uphill so pack a sandwich and drinks and you will be good to go.
Levani S
An easy hike with beautiful views. Easy hike = lots of people. So we had to wait to get a seat and enjoy nature. Over all it is totally worth going up and enjoying the stroll.

This is a great place for hiking. And it's only 1 hour from New York City. Bear Mountain State Park opens every day at 8:00 am. You only pay $10 for parking. There are 4 trails and they are not difficult. Here you can also walk around Hessian Lake or rent pedal boards. If you walk the trails to the top of the park, you can see the Purple Hear Memorial Bridge, the Hudson River Valley, the Perkins Memorial Tower. Also in this park there is a zoo, a swimming pool, a carousel, a playground and a picnic area. In general, this is a popular place, so there are a lot of people here.
SS SS
Amazing place with lake, walking around Lake, boating, huge camping barbecue place with huge parking.
An excellent 2 hours one way mountain hiking, it take 1 hour climb down.
10$ car parking is the only fee, advised to take your own food as food cart is not visible anywhere.
Leticia Ramirez
Our first time going there and we absolutely loved it. Great place to go hiking. One thing I didn't like is that it's overcrowded at the picnic area and people throwing garbage at random places not cool.
Felicia Howard
My stay here was absolutely AMAZING, I had no clue Upstate NYC could be so gorgeous and serene at the same time, there was something to do for everyone.. Even the younger children will have a great time here there was even a Zoo on the property.. I came on a trip here with my fellow classmates, but plan on returning in the future with family and friends highly recommend that you check this attraction out🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👌🏿..
Fabi C
This place is amazing! There are many things to do and many places to explore. You can relax looking at the lake, enjoy a hike, explore the trails, play games and take amazing photos. Too bad I don't have a place like this near my house!!!
Aaron Lieber
A must go spot in reasonable distance from NYC to go watch beautiful sunsets. Go to the peak up Perkins Memorial Drive near tower. Great for peaceful motorcycle rides and plenty of hiking trails to explore too.
Michelle Cohen
Beautiful scenery and lots of places to walk. The section of the AT here has walkable rock steps and not rock scrambles. If you have an EV, there is one charger with two charge cables. Unfortunately my side didn't work and stopped charging after 5 min. If you have a Tesla, bring a J1772 adapter.
We could have spent all day in this park with flat trails, paddle boat rentals, picnic grounds, bathrooms, and a trail side zoo. Add this park onto your list when visiting the Hudson Valley area
Yuri Campos
Had an amazing time going up the Hudson River on a boat till we got three the place is so peaceful and great for a hike, great scenery as well. We all loved it ❤️
Omar Roa
Beautiful spot! There looks to be two main ways up the mountain. We took the more vigorous way up. You definitely need some conditioning to make it up that way. The other side is mostly stairs.
Paths are clearly marked and the views were gorgeous!
Shoma Padma
It's a wonderful place to visit if you wanna make a day's trip within NYC. The scenic views are amazing, all of it. There are enough activities to do for a day visit. The pool is beautiful 😍 …
JoAnn Norris
We visited the Fort Montgomery Historic Site and took the trail from that site which took us over a really cool suspension bridge & on a path that went under the Bear Mtn Bridge. From there, we entered the Zoo. Enjoyed seeing the 🐻 bears! We stopped at the Bear Mtn Inn which was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Very nice gift shop too.
Robert Maeurer
Great hiking friendly environment bonus free parking when it's not peak season. If you are a novice or are taking people with you that are novice hikers when you walk to the left of the Inn, take the yellow trail (Suffern bear Mountain trail) White perpendicular rectangles Mark the way and it's virtually all stairs going up. Do not give up you will not be disappointed by the views by the tower. Do not rush up either. Take the major Welch trail if you want a little bit of a challenge going up
LeTs RoAm ArOuNd ThE WoRlD !!
Bear mountain state park has large picnic grounds with barbque grills, lake and a zoo. It is located in very scenic location, it also offers a swimming pool, paddle boating service. It is very huge for walk it has hiking trails and playgrounds for kids too.

Went on a Sunday. The park was crowded. Spent about an hour trying to get into the park as the parking lots were blocked from entry.
Once in there, paid $10 to park. There seemed to be ample parking. The park's large. They've got hiking trails, peddle boat (don't think they allowed kayaking though). I thought I saw one kids play area. Should have had more.
The toilet stalls were small. You have to stand over the toilet to open the door. And they were poorly maintained.
Otherwise, a decent place to spend time.
Philip Lisio
Beautiful for viewing fall foliage. The main trail is a bit crowded, but still beautiful. An easy drive from Manhattan, no traffic on Sunday AM. Plenty of parking and a :decent cafeteria for snacks.
g lee d.
Love this place every time we visit but this time tower was closed as well as Pershing Drive (road to tower) and Welsh trail due to active fire. Appalachian trail to the tower was open so we took that and it was quite a work to get to the top. There are no water fountains we saw on top and the vending machines (off the side by the old rest room building) did not work so we were left very thirsty!
Cafe on the side of the inn (at the bottom) was a god-send. Also the boating house was closed so there was no boating on the lake. Was a bit of disappointment but the park is beautiful as ever and the view at the top is unmatched! So worth the trip any time of the year.
Kershee J
We did major Welch trail climbing up and A trail going down. Major Welch trail requires a lot of body strength and you will actually “climb” a few slopes. A trail is a lot more friendly, it’s just a lot of steps. The view is great from the top.
Soraya Rave
Great State Park that links up with Harriman State Park. Hiking and walking trails for everyone at any level of walking or hiking, scenic man made lakes, beautiful fall leaves and colors, an Inn for overnight stays, bathrooms off the main lot 1 parking area. The Bear Mountain Loop is a hike up stairs mainly with scenics views. If you do the hike in reverse, it is a bit rocky and requires two hands for scrambling up. Take the stairs for an easier route but a more difficult decent. Or take the rocky scramble up and the stairs down. Lastly you could take the stairs or rocky scramble up and go back down the way you came as well. Plenty of other trails to explore too. The rocky way down is good for children 7 & older who are adventurous and have good balance. The rocky way up is good for children 5 & older. The stairs are good for all age groups as long as you can carry a child younger than 5 once they get tired and still navigate the stairs yourself. Overall a great experience and beautiful 60 degree weather was perfect for hiking. The only downside are the long bathrooms lines and the bathrooms running out of toilet paper. At the peak there are porta pottys but so icky you're better off going in the woods.
Molly Calliste
Was a bit early this year for peak season, but still beautiful! Consistently clean, great trails (for beginners as well as experienced hikers) and cooperating weather.
Stanley Chan
The trails can be intense. Just have to be careful when walking down. Other then that the view is amazing!!
There is $10 fees for parking.
Keerthy V
It's a nice place for a day picnic. Lots of trails and the paved trail along the lake was the best. We took a stroller along that trail. It was very scenic and beautiful.
Hansel Tang
It’s a great park for family. Picnic, boat, hike, swim (with pool), zoo, you can choose any one you like. Or just sit by the lake for a while, it’s also a very enjoyable thing.
sumalena thakore
Awesome place for one day teip to just disconnect and be with nature. They also have logging if you want to stay for more then one day. The spot is clean and parking is good too. Great place for hiking and picnic. They have seperate places for grilling and for playing, nice lawn if you just want to relax in the sun. I liked that. They have boating and swimming pool. Pool entrance is $5 per person. I like the smal cafe area they have in case u did not bring food you will find food there. They also have mary go around for the kids it by the reast rooms. The rest room were no good but i understand so many people come there. They should make new rest rooms as there is only one restoom with 10 stalls. It gets crowded. That is the reason i gave 4 stars.
Karla Torres
I visited during pandemic and it was amazing, many things to do. Walk, hiking, barbecue, there is a pool also! Great for going with the family
Julia Goncharenko
Although the Hessen Lake and the views from Bear Mountain are beautiful, the park and the trails are overcrowded. You can’t find serenity walking there. Only crowds and numerous of stairs killing your knees.
Edward Morales
The hiking areas are incredible. But the parks and picnic areas area a bit of a mess. It's crowded on the weekends and a lot of garbage. I'd only come here to hike. There are plenty of seating areas to grill so that's an option but I'd get here early.
Parth Malhotra
Beautiful park with some really nice trails! I would recommend That you do the trail rather than just driving up to the scenic overlook. The hike is really nice. It’s a moderate hike and very enjoyable.
Peter Calderon
Great park for a day hike! We did the tower hike and boy was it high up there! Lots of steps. The trail was clearly marked. I'd go back!
Nadiia Yamnitska
The great park for family day. It has a big picnic area, zoo, swimming pool and hiking trails. Highly recommended!!!
Marvyn Alleyne
I loved every minute of it. It was so beautiful there. The air was crisp, the view was amazing. I was happy to share this experience with my lady. It was her idea, she has been here a few times.
Cindy
Nature at its best! Took a walk around the the lake, enjoyed the scenery and fresh crisp air. This place it pretty clean, as it should because there's quite a few trash cans made available. Lots of picnic tables and nice lawn to just relax and enjoy nature.
Sonia
Visited Bear Mountain State Park at the end of October to enjoy some nice views and beautiful fall colors. We scrambled up rocks on the way to the top and took the steps on the way down. The way up was not crowded at all but the way down was super crowded. We were able to see the Manhattan skyline from the top. The Fall colors and views were absolutely spectacular!! (Parking is $10)
purpose child
This was an amazing experience. You can vist here for just 10 bucks. 10 bucks for parking, they have a pool you can use, vist the carousel, go on hiking trails and also use the picnic area for grilling. They will allow you to vist the zoo by just donating a small amount of money.
The cabin was amazing, each room had their own TV, bathroom, a small refrigerator and a small coffee machine.
Kent Woo
If you're looking for a nice hiking trail this would be the place. It has a beautiful scenery and it has different level of hiking trails that's accompanying for all people
Somesh Rao
Beautiful place, but horribly crowded during fall color time. Be prepared to wait for an hour or more to get a parking place.
For lovers of hiking, the Appalachian trial goes thru the park. Springer mountain, Georgia, the southernmost part of the AT is 1402 miles south. Look for the white blazes which mark the AT for all 2194 miles of the trail.
Lynn Mudryk
Great day trip about an hour from NYC. Picnic tables line the lake, bar and restaurant in Bear Mountain Inn, and several hiking paths that suit beginners and the more exoerienced. Plenty of parking as well. Just a beautiful way to enjoy nature!
Sona
Always love a visit to the beautiful Bear mountains, always..So beautiful..the mountains...the majestic Hudson river....This wonderful park with its lakeside and trails looks the best during fall with all the colors..Try to visit the park before 4 pm when the zoo and its trails are open...the zoo trails lead you to many historical points including ruins of fort Clinton and fort Montgomery..There are small museums with many exhibits including the varieties of plants ,animals, birds ,insects and many other organisms that live in the habitat provided by the bear mountain..You can learn a bit of history too..
Антон Ragnar
My second trip to this fascinating place.
Good family spot: lots of facilities for barbeque, spacious parking, pond with boat renting.
And, of course, the mountain!
You can choose trail difficulty according to your fitness level or simply drive right to the top!!!
As an alternative (that’s the way I did it, though I strictly do not recommend this) you can go to the top using natural rocks instead of trails - will be some kind of a crazy hybrid of rock climbing and hiking.
Trails are well-maintained and really pretty with all the swirly steps made of stone (see photos).
You can see some butterflies and other insects, some birds maybe - fauna is not very luscious.
But what truly deserves your attention are scenic views - these are magnificent. A pity that photo can never convey what you feel standing on the top of the mountain and staring down on tiny bridges and 200-meter barges that look children’s toys…
And finally bear mountain Inn looked very impressive but was closed that day - I got only some sneak-peak throw-the-window photos for you.
Sarmistha Guha
Went for fall folliage with my baby. Wasn't looking for hiking but loved the time near the lake, had food from the inn. Great place for family outings..something for everyone.
Richard Gatto
Beautiful nice way to spend a family day. Only thing it could have used a bit of a clean up. Some people are ignorant to the word respect & leave their garbage behind. I reme.ber a better world when I grew up.
Jennifer Houck
Great location. Close to USMA. pool, zoo, museum and lodging all at your exposure. Appalachian trail is also here. Beautiful view
Britt Señor
In the summer it is very crowded, do not expect to park at the main trial if you do not arrive before sunrise. There are many obscure trails in the area that are beautiful. Use all trails app to find them. If early spring or fall the main trail has a lot of people but there is always plenty of parking. Very worth it and has beautiful views. I didn't capture many this visit but it is beautiful.
Anthony Gates
The perfect weekend getaway from the city! Beautiful scenery all around. I highly recommend visiting here 🤙🏻 (pet-friendly as well) =(^.^)= …
saroj lenka
Lovely trekking in the bear mountain, lots of scenery. The beginning is little confusing even the start of the trail is something one newbie can miss. Once on trail it's awesome and there are some nice rugged, stone climbing with little elevation. Small one for avg trekkers.
Dee Hall
Bear Mountain is always my "go to" place for peace of mind. I love the scenery. The mountains are just God-send. The lake and open spaces are just what the doctor ordered. Definitely a place to go with the family.
George Joseph - Photos by Josef
What an amazing spot on Earth.
The drive up to the top is spectacular.
A lot of very friendly people walking biking driving or riding.
Highly recommended.
Sneha W. Singh
It’s gets crowded over the weekend and public holidays for obvious reasons, it’s very pretty and in close proximity to nyc n Nj.
The resort there do not have enough food options so bring your own food. You can do picnics and bbq. It’s a very beautiful spot for day trips and also to stay a night. There are places around to stay. And it’s a beautiful scenic drive from nyc.
Michael Ambrosio
Beautiful state park with many options for activities (some seasonal). Family friendly,
diksha
Great quick getaway spot from city. Enjoyed our time here. Must go spot for a fun picnic day.
Luis Altamirano
Really liked the outdoors, and living in the city can be somewhat of a draining thing from time to time. This state park is about 30 min away, and it has everything you could ask for. Trails, pools, lakes, foresty scenery and all, and it changes with the seasons keeping it fresh throughout the year to visit. Highly recommend it!
Lisa Lin
Very big state park. People can take boat to there from Manhattan. They have rental boat, swimming pool and a small zoo with birds, bears and foxes. You can do many different things there. When we get there the bear mountain inn hold a wedding. What a nice place to have a wedding.
Eve
Great spot to get away from the chaos of nyc. Has many attractions such as zoo, pool, barbecue, lake, and much more. Make sure to check their website for events like this car show I attended to.
Ashley Lindell
Long time favorite. Very peaceful, well maintained, and trails nearby for all hike types. I love this spot any time of year.
Foyez Shariar
This is really beautiful place. I would like go again. We had so much fun.
T S
A tough hike and ascension in the hot and humid days of August. Fantastic views, geocaching and well marked trails. A rocky ascent.
Rosie Begum
Couldn’t be happier to do some hiking with my family. They have got nice lake, basketball court, picnic spots and gift shops which I don’t have pictures of.
Marc Shoemaker
This park has a fantastic view of the surround area. There are also numerous trails to go hiking. The tower was closed at this time but the view is still phenomenal.
Hoa Duong
Very popular area offering various activities. Good easy/moderate hikes depending on which trails you choose. The most recommended trail is going up on red circle (Welch) and going down on white (Appalachian). Red trail is rock scramble and white is all stairs. White trail is much crowded than red that it's not easy to maintain social distancing. You cannot see New York City from here still the view is spectacular especially in foliage.
Lenny Bautista
Love it great hikes awesome views just a place zoo skating rink carousel
Ivette Malpica
Beautiful places to share with family. Great for picnicking with tables and grill.the bathroom a bit far depending on the area where you are located . Overall good place.
RAM IMAGERY
Gosh... the amount of ppl & ppl speaking loudly was rather annoying. Hope to enjoy a quiet hike but these ppl were savages. Wildlife like... hate ppl that behave this way. Also, why is anyone thinking it's ok to throw garbage anywhere ?!
Ros Adriaanse
So beautiful to see the Fall season in all its colorful glory. The park is peaceful and soothing to your soul
sanjeev shakya
Short drive from the city to experience breathtaking views and getting a good workout hiking to the tower. Great place to barbecue with family and kids too
Denzi Yishey (Travel_with_Tenzin)
This is one of the most popular state park close to New York City. It is accessible for day trip as it has tons of activities for families such as swimming pool ($5 per person entry fees), carousels, zoo, boating, skating during winter, picnicking, hiking, and many others.
The parking fees is $10 but it’s free if you are camping at any of the nearby state park including Beaver Pond Campground.
The park gets crowded on weekends and so, if possible, visit during weekdays as there will be less crowd and more space for yourself.
The park also has a small stall where they sells hotdogs, soft drinks and beers. It’s little expensive though.
Recommended if you are looking for a good place for your kids.
Kimberly Fuentes
This is a beautiful spot. It has hiking, a boat rental spot, a zoo, and a pool. You do pay $10 to go in but it's worth it. You get a lot for 10 bucks. Payment is separate for the boat rentals though. It's a big park so for the most part you can find a spot for you and you're family to do some BBQ. If you don't complete the hike or choose not to do it, you can still see the view by driving your car up the road.
Jesminara Khatun
If you are around NYC, this is a must visit place, particularly if you are a hiking enthusiast. Very scenic.
Tariqul Islam
Awesome place to enjoy the natural beauty of the lake, you could hike also.
Dan O'Rourke
The rooms were decent and the staff were helpful. Just remember that it is a lodge and not exactly a resort. The access to the lake and surrounding Bear Mountain trails though the Palicades were fantastic!
Free EV charging on site via EV Connect although the charging point are on the lakeside of the building, making them a little hard to get to and unlit at night.
Andres Castrillon
Great place ,nice view , if your planning a picnic or just want to relax its very good and family friendly, would recommend this place anytime.
Lubomyr
Incredibly beautiful seven lakes, fresh air, breathtaking views - that's all about this Park.
santosh
Best place to hangout with family kids n friends
Park, small museum, long trail, barbecue near lake picnic n play area.
Kevin TheGreatOne
Great getaway place not too far from NYC. During leafer season this place is packed on weekends. Make sure you get here early.
Couleen White
It's a beautiful park. The views are amazing and the trails are awesome! It's great that they have an inn there if you want to stay or have an event. Loved the fact I was able to paddleboat on the lake there; the price wasn't bad at all either $10/person for one hour. Would definitely go back.
Benzion Milecki
Relatively easy bushwalk, though there are some difficult parts especially if you stray from path as we did. Good for older kids and teens.
Anni M
Pool is $5/per person—cash only. Carousel is $2/ride—cash only. There is a small zoo for a suggestion donation of $1-2/person, abundant hiking trails, pedal boats, two
Snack bar/cafe options, and ample (pay) parking.
Hazar Hallaje
An awesome place for hiking with family and friends. It great place for picnic.
Kathryn Hashem
It was not clear what I was getting us into when I decided to make this adventure. We will be back because the pool was so inviting looking, but after all the up and down hiking we were too tired. We went from the carousel to the Hudson and back, exploring the little zoo on the way. It was a beautiful day, but could have included swimming had i planned better. Next time!
Mena (Mena)
Nice place to have a grill. There is a public pool and a can go on the lake. There is a lot of hiking! There is history to view in a museum. There is a zoo with cool animals.
LARRY SPIEGEL
Beautiful Park in upstate NY. Great for hiking, photography, cookouts, excellent for families.
Nova Fox
The hike to the top was brutal but beautiful! I loved every minute, i will definitely be returning next time i visit upstate NY! Thanks for the memories
Efrain Antonio Suarez Casanova
Nothing more beautiful than nature and being able to enjoy it with the comforts and services of the city. A beautiful place, with people from different places and origins, sharing and enjoying contact with nature. Excellent attention and guides for various activities, hiking, camping and boat trips on the lake.
carissaey
Easy trail. Even saw a lot of parents bringing their toddler/s (on their back). Go first on the Major Welch Trail going down to Appalachian Trail. Tye Major Welch Trail is rocky while the Appalachian is just stair so it will be easier to go down.
And there’s a must visit zoo before you go to the trail, we saw 2 cutie bears inside and some other animals. Only take you 30mins to roam around before your hike!
Just hoping there’s a normal bathroom on the top of the trail since there’s a tower in there, and there’s a room like in the front of the vending machines. I mean there’s a portable cubicle but its sooooo dirty. 🤢
But overall, we will come back again in the future!
PS: there’s someone selling honeys down the trail, the honey sticks are worth the try. There’s different flavors of honey. And its only 1$ for 3pcs. We tried everything aside from the regular honey and rootbeer flavor. And everything was good. ❤️
John J
Very beautiful summit. The main trail can be surprsingly tough and catch people off guard fitness wise but it is well worth it to make it to the top!!!!
SoufGPZ
Did you know that during summertime, every Wednesday afternoon they have a car show/meet? It’s $5 to go in and I believe it’s a raffle ticket.
The show takes place by the main parking lot on the grass area. They have food, drinks and cars!
Tina Mohammed-Seepersad
Very serene spot! Great trip for families! Scenic and peaceful!
Grzegorz Rozum
Bear mountain park is a fantastic place to spend the time with plenty of trails and lookouts. Only an hour away from NYC but it can get pretty busy on the weekends because of that. I did the Popolopen Torne Loop and i highly recommend it, the are couple strenuous parts but with some rest anyone can do it.
Evgeny T
Great hike, I'd say moderate difficulty.
We started the loop trail and it took us about 2 hours to get up to the tower and about 30 minutes to go down through Appalacian trail on a low/medium pace. The views worth the effort.
Roger Wei
Its a beautiful and a fun place for a family or a couple to spend the weekend.
Lulu Azran
The park is really nice. There is a station that provides help select your hike according to your needs. We did the paddling boat and it was awesome, our little girls really enjoyed it. ($20 per person for an hour). Overall we enjoyed it a lot.
Benjamin Koola
Go when the clouds are forming and wait until the whole mountain fills up with it. Amazing drive and lots of opportunities to click pics.
Austin Abraham
Would definitely come again while I can. Beautiful views.
Daniel Sheinfil
Nice to visit in fall/winter season. Quiet and not crowded.
Experience the fresh air and serene scenary
Udit Anand
Don't believe the folks that say this is a hike of moderate difficulty. The Major Welch trail is intense and the Appalachian trail is relatively moderate (has more steps). The views along the hike are breathtaking though.
We did the Welch trail on the way up and the Appalachian trail on the way down.
The markings are good but could be clearer, especially for the Appalachian trail that forks into two trails along the way

I loved driving to the hiking area, going all the way to the camping area. However, recently I went there for fall view and discovered that they have a hotel there. People also do weddings by the hotel extension, and they have a beautiful lake area for taking pictures with nature. Parking is free and so is the entrance. I have seen people bring their BBQ grills and enjoy family gatherings to celebrating birthday parties. I will go for fall view next year and enjoy a relaxing full day for sure. This is a must see place.

Hiking was absolutely amazing! It was a beautiful day and with great company, I had an amazing time!!
Kris Kashtanova
Gorgeous views and rather nice trail up if you don’t mind a lot of stairs! It’s a dog friendly park (dogs must be on leash at all times). There’re restrooms at the beginning of the trail and portable toilets at the top of the mountain. Bring bug spray as there were mosquitoes by the end of the day. Absolutely gorgeous about 2 hours long hike. Take the Appalachian Trail. There is limited parking space at the top of the mountain. We left the car at the bottom and hiked all the way up and down

Such an amazing park. I did not know that there was paddle boarding barbecuing and a big pool all within 15 minutes from my home. There's a $10 fee for parking. And although it seems like you might not find good spots everything is pretty close by. There are endless amounts of space to be able to barbecue and hold family or friend gatherings. For the pool there is a $5 fee per person. They also charge for infants. I think that was the only upsetting part. There are no strollers or coolers with wheels allowed by the pool area. But you can have a book bag with drinks and snacks. There is a storage room available where you can leave your stroller and cooler. Will definitely be making plans with my family to keep visiting.

Scenic drive on the way and amazing place to chill, enjoy your day. Lots of kids attractions
Meriem Ben
Wonderful place to do a bbq, and to gather with the family and friends. However I put 4 stars cause it’s little dirty and some people put a loud music
omkar kulkarni
A fun place with lots of activities. Hike actually starts near ice rink. You can either take steps or hike to top or even drive to top of mountain. Hiking up to Perkins Tower is fun and strenuous. Make sure to carry water and some snacks. Views are really amazing and photos cannot describe the actual views.
Area around lake is good spot for day's picnic
Kevin Law
Beautiful park with fantastic views. Plenty of space to enjoy a nice day or weekend with family and friends. Nice playground for the kids, paddle boats to take a lap around Bear Mountain Lake amd hiking trail to enjoy the walks. Dont forget to take a quick stop at the Hudson River overlook just over Bear Mountain Bridge.

A family picnic day - hiking, Zoo, Pool, Boating, Park, Camping, Food, Music.
Limited parking so better reach early before noon.
Zoo closes at 4pm
Boating closes at 5pm.

Great park, awesome views. We weren’t aware that you can drive to the top of the mountain. We were stun to see people in the top of the mountain with flip flops and no sweat. But we realize there was a whole parking lot up there 😅. Definitely, a good little hike!, with lots of nature, and awesome scenery. 🐻 🏔️ …

A beautiful state park located in the mountains. There is easy access to major highways, just becareful with the up climb you can easily go over a cliff if not careful. The greenery is a colorful site of leaves , dirt, and grass especially when seasons change. You can hike to the top of the mountain on trails. They have a swimming pool, ice rink, merry go round and paddle boats. There is a huge area with picnic tables and grills, especially around the lake. You can bring your own grill, tents or canopies for BBQ in the park. The park is pet friendly. There are plenty of trails for walking, skating and biking. This is definitely the place to relax or just have fun. Bring your Frisbee, football, basketball or badminton set to play on the open fields. Enjoying the family close to home.

Not good as good they are in Canada but great scenic view

I had not been here in over forty years and I couldn't remember much about it. I now went in mid September and some things were closed, like the paddle boats on the small lake. Oh and the concession stand was closed.
Beautiful wooded grounds with paved paths t walk on. A rustic old, but nice Inn that had rooms for rent. The inn also had a gift shop and cafe.
In the winter time there is ice skating just across from lodge.
We did not go to it, but was told they have a zoo and further up the main road was a look out point that I was told you can see NY city.
Though some things are only open in summer, this is year round place to visit. Oh in the summer only there is a $10 parking fee.
Phil Meltzer
Bear Mountain State Park its absolutely beautiful with lots of space, lots to see, and lots to do. The only problem is how incredibly crowded it gets every weekend with folks from the city flooding in all at once. Get there early or find a day in the middle of the week for your visit.
Srikrish
Excellent. The marking on trails could be a bit more frequent though. We totally went off trail on our way down the mountain but made it down safely. I'm used to the frequency of trail markings in national parks and this threw me off a bit. Otherwise fantastic! Great views from the top.
Tara S
In summer of 2021 we had our first family hike at Bear Mountain. The views were Impeccable. Please see pictures
C M
Bear Mountain is always a great place to escape, too, whether it is a walk around the lake, a skate at the rink, or a beverage at the Inn.
Lori Yensan
Wow... fantastic hike...very hard...NOT a moderate trail. Gorgeous views and I LOVED Parkman Tower. It was a bonus that it's part of the Appalachian Trail. I would recommend putting a sign at the beginning of the trail to let hikers know how to get to Parkman Tower...many of the hikers were confused and didn't hike because of it.
Mrs Carb
The grounds were beautiful and I was impressed with the hiking trails. The bathrooms were filthy. I sought out someone who works there who told me they knew and were waiting for everyone to be done. This situation continued for at least 1/2 hour. My thought is, stand there with a closed sign, let the people in there finish, and then quickly clean up. Then later, when there is more time, do a thorough cleaning.
Jeremy Doran
The white trail is no joke. It was worth the hike. The views were beautiful! Easy to park and very family friendly.
Stephanie Caro
I been going there since I was a teenager always enjoyed going up there. (Pool, ice skating,zoo)..
As I gotten older I really appreciate the peace I get just hiking through the park.
sim free 770
Nice place, check before you go to see if any trails are closed.
The Appalachian trail up the mountain is pretty boring and very hard - you'll just climb thousands of the steps, until you get to the top and finally catch a bit if a view...
I would recommend trying a different trail.
Lala
One of the most beautiful places in new york. There's so much to discover.. can't see much of fireworks from there, which was the plan, but any day of the week is ideal for serene, beautiful landscape.
P0sitive Days
Beautiful. At the top you can see many other mountains and what’s seems to be a city. Only downside is that while walking there I fell near the start and had to turn back. The way back was tricky cause there’s many paths so I got lost. It was like my 3rd time there though. I would recommend though. Also at the start there are bathrooms and a carousel.
Mari Kocur
Beautiful park. Hike was pretty challenging at about 5 miles and gained 1200 feet in elevation. Felt great when we got to the top and was well worth the view. Lots of steps on one way up/down. Stretch your knees and legs!
Arya Phatak
Great experience of hiking here! There are a number of trails, we did the bear trail which was about 3.8miles and took us a total of 1 hour 45 minutes to climb and get back down. The view from the top was okay ,nothing exceptional. It was a good workout. Ample parking space was available on the weekend and there was no attendant so it was free. Since this is a popular hiking spot, the trails were pretty crowded. Plan ahead and start early for hopefully lesser crowds.
Vivian Tseng
Great for hiking! I love the lakeside trail because it is stroller friendly. There are picnic tables, bathrooms, carousel, ice skating, an outdoor pool and zoo - lots to do for everybody. No food only vending machines for snacks.
natasha dsouza
The place and trek is beautiful but the restrooms need to be cleaned and maintained. Increase the parking price of funding is an issue as such a beautiful place needs to be preserved. Also, there should be more dustbins as there is so much trash at the bottom of the mountain thrown near the tables.
Boaz Sed
Nice great trails all around the park with amazing views
Some trails run hour to two hours
Beautiful park
Came here for a bbq and hike with couple great friends
A lot of people playing games
Volleyball basketball
Fine trees all around 😂 nature fun
N R
Beautiful hiking trails, lots of scenery to take in, and plenty of running streams to follow up the mountain. You get a sense of history when standing in the park and it’s a great place to go out with friends and family, or a nice spot to catch a good workout.
Natasha Persaud
Wonderful atmosphere for family and the staff are kind the place is clean
Shawn Thomas George
Beautiful place filled with adventurous trails all around the mountain. The bridge is a nice place to visit and walk around. The view from the mountain is really breath taking. Park has a great parking lot along places where we can have a seat for picnic. Rest rooms are also available for everyone. It's a really good one day picnic that anyone can enjoy with friends or family.
Soumi Roy
This is highly recommended place for day trip. If you are a avid hiking person this is your place. Due to winter lot of points were closed still we enjoyed the walk through the snow and sunshine.
We loved the park and plan to visit again in spring
Jenny
Perfect day trip for the entire family! Parking was $10. We visited on a Saturday and arrived around 12pm and there was ample parking. The kids enjoyed the carousel that had unique animals to choose from. $2 per person for one go around. Nice semi level walk to the lake where you can rent paddle boats. I thought it was a bit expensive for $20 per person for 30mins. If you're up for a 10-15mins walk, then head over to the zoo. Free of charge with option for donations. It's not a level terrain but it's paved and almost all shaded by the trees. There's a beautiful lookout by the amphitheater. They had plenty of animals on display and tons of informative plaques to keep the kids learning while walking through the zoo. They have tons of vending machines scattered through the park and we got some ice cream to cool off. They do have a snack shop and also you can buy food in the larger lodge looking building. Plenty of spots with BBQ pits and picnic tables. We then got back in the car and drove up to the highest peak. Parking was a bit busier with less spots to offer. Tower was free of charge. We walked up 8 flights of steps and got to see a nice view from the top due to it was a clear sunny day. You can see NYC from the tower. Highly recommend you bring a pair of binoculars. We then walked down and walked over to some benches they have by the edge. Wonderful views and definitely enough to do to spend a nice day with the family.
Alexander Lo
The entire place is beautiful and amazing. The inn/staff are top notch. Great hiking and lodging.
My only complaint was the people bbqing and partying. At first I liked seeing all the families out enjoying the outdoor. Good clean family fun! Yay!
But at night we could see so much litter and mess left behind.. plus the fact that music and loud noise drowns out the nature escape you're probably coming here for.
Overall we had a great weekend trip and plan on returning.
Justin Hayworth
Accessible from NYC, but often over crowded, hazy, or otherwise just OK.
The hiking is not especially challenging and better options exist in the Hudson Valley (like the area around Cold Spring or Pawling).
Still, it’s good for a quick city getaway and has far more of a natural feel than say Central Park
peter liu
beautiful season to visit and see the red foilages.
Danny Surujbali
I’ve been going to Bear Mountain for years, mostly for the trails which I like to run. It is not recommended to those not used to trail running, beginner level I’d stay away as the terrain is fairly harsh. The trails are well maintained, there are options for simple 2-3 mile trails, loops up to 7 or you can even extend it out to 10-12 if you’re game. Other than trails, the park has a Ferris wheel/merry go round for kids, many people have bbq’s when the weather if decent, there is a lake with pedal boats and also a
Season ice skating rink. The park hosts beerfests which are also seasonal, Oktoberfest being the largest gathering from my experience. Parking in the lot is typically around $10 and bathrooms and fairly clean.
Tammy Linen
My kids and I enjoyed ourselves. It was a great experience with a great brass band and the narrator added a pleasant touch to the trip. The food and drinks were delicious. I will go again.
Lindsey O'Rourke
Beautiful park. Great views of the Hudson from Bear Mountain.
David
The view is beautiful especially if you are lucky enough to be there for fall foilage. You. An walk up there or drive up there.
Hike is nice too, but since there is also a road you will hear car and motorbike sounds that ruins the ambience a bit
Bornagain Christian
Beautiful park with the lake, zoo, carousel and playground
Popular for ice skating but I hear fills fast.
It's in our area so we try to go often but off season. When camps there it's crowded. But still outdoor spacey.
Nate Hafer
Beautiful state park with lots of things to do
Roberto Munoz
Beautiful lake and surrounding area. Great for a BBQ, picnic 🧺 Amazing views. …
Stephen Spencer
This place gets crowded very easily and it is no wonder! Less than an hour's drive from Manhattan on the Interstate Parkway, Bear Mountain State Park offers plenty of trails of varying hiking difficulty. It is dog friendly although dogs should be kept on a leash. Parking at the top of Perkins Drive is very limited and will be a challenge on busy weekends and in the summer months.
Haw Kor
Beautiful State Park that connects to the Appalachian trail. Lots of fun activities for the family, whether you have younger kids or older kids. There is a large grassy area that is perfect for kites on a windy day. The carousel is open only on weekends. There is seating around the lake if you brought lunch and want a picnic table. There is also a playground with some great features for younger and older kids to keep them interested and tires them out. The hikes can be strenuous so be prepared with water and appropriate footwear.
Aubri Wentz
Beautiful hiking trails. We took the Major Welch trail up, which has some cool rock scrambles. We then took the white trail down, which has a ton of rock stairs, which I’m not the biggest fan of. So if a lot stairs aren’t your thing, then this isn’t for you. The trails, especially the Major Welch one, are moderate to hard in intensity, wouldn’t recommend doing it with small children. Only thing that detracted from this hike was a lot of road/highway noise. Nice lookout points as you go. You can even spot NYC on a clear day from the summit. You can also drive to the top as well.
We came on a weekday, wasn’t very crowded at all.
The Hessian Lake loop near the main lot is an easy 1.5 mile paved loop that is beautiful, good for all ages.
Merry-go-round (weekends) and zoo onsite, good for kids.
Picnic areas and bathrooms on site.
Madhur Shetty
Amazing Day trip experience with lot of hiking options. Kid’s friend.
Dawid Wegrzyn
Gorgeous place to spend the day breathing in fresh air and taking in the beautiful mountain landscape. I had a fantastic little hike here with my 10 month old dog the other day. Up top the views of the Hudson are incredible and I just couldn't keep my camera in my pocket. Took more pictures than I can count 😊. If you are starting your hike somewhere near the Inn around Hessian Lake and you are wanting to reach the top I would highly recommend taking the Appalachian Trail up and down. The Appalachian Trail has a man made Trail with coping stones keeping you safe on the steep ledges and stairs going up the entire way. Depending on your condition and hiking capabilities you could take the Major Welch Trail up (which I took with my 10 month old Staffy puppy) which also provides beautiful jaw dropping views but the hike up is definitely for experts so be prepared to take quite a few breaks to catch your breath as you are walking up a fairly wild trail filled with steep inclines and boulders to hike up compared to the Appalachian Trail which is an Intermediate hike made to be a bit more user friendly. If you do decide the Major Welch Trail is for you then I would highly recommend taking this Trail up and then the Appalachian Trail back down as you will end up in the same spot at the bottom and the Appalachian Trail in my opinion is much safer of a hike on the way back down especially. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking to spend a beautiful day hiking outdoors. Also up top there are vending machines with cold drinks and snacks and there are restrooms so you don't have to bring so much water and snacks up with you in your pack. But bring plenty of water if you are planning this hike on a hot summer day as it does require quite a bit of work to peak. Stay hydrated out there, have fun, respect mother nature, respect the mountain forest, and please don't leave any trash along the trail (there are trash cans and recycling bins up top). Enjoy your hiking adventures 😉

A great escape a short drive north of NYC. Countless hiking trails in adjacent Harriman state park, a great view of lower Hudson valley from atop Perkins memorial tower as well as the small but enchanting bear Mt zoo and museum. A great day trip
Hideki MOCHIZUKI
Very beautiful scenery near busy NYC
M Zion
Beautiful, highly paved trails. Don’t need boots. Great views. Very busy on weekends especially at the top since the viewpoint is accessible by car.
about 1:15 hike each way

Went with relatives…we had many kids ranging from 3yrs to 12 yrs…after one hr hike we reached to first scenic view…whole hike upt o the top not possible with smaller kids unless u do hiking regularly overall great experience

Family gathering . Muslim people love to gather in this place. I have been going this place many years. Kids love this place. Hiking is great experience if you have good health. Good for day trip. Food are expensive in the restaurant. There is no food around. Please bring food or do bbq.

Wow! This place is amazing, the best place to do hiking challenges, I didn't get to find the Bear at first time but I will see it for sure next time. Also, a great place to have fun fishing or have a family party and have fun. I deeply recommend it as the view is beautiful from the very top plus the time it takes to reach the top you get to see amazing views and description of certain areas which is very interesting to know. As mentioned above you don't wanna miss out on this.
Verne J. Washington Sr
The mountain was closed on Thanksgiving! Will try again today
Mario Christianto
$10 entrance fee per car. Nice little park with a quiet lake. You can rent a paddle boat ($10 per person per hour, bring cash for an additional $20 refundable deposit for each boat). There are a lot of benches and BBQ sites, plenty of parking. There's bathroom, vending machines. Supposedly there's also a pool but I didn't look at it. There's also a lodge although I didn't check whether they were open or not.
Selena
Great state park... Free entry with lots of parking. There are three lots plus little spots to stop at outlooks with spectacular views. Beautiful lake with boats available for use. Lots of trails and ample park space.
Ekta Dhaka
Park was a pretty place for a trek. It had different trails like normal walk trails, step climbing trails, steep climbing trails, etc. It also had boat paddling. Since it is the beginning of fall so there were pretty views too. It wad all green and colorful
Note: We opted to got there thinking that it would be less people there but it was very crowded for a trek.
Ekaterina Smirnova
A beautiful place to walk/hike/have a picnic alone or with your family. Its very crowded.
There are few trails, we choose a red one. The climb wasn't hard except few moments. On the top opens an incredible scenic view!
Ush Jaik
Bear mountain definitely makes for a great little getaway from the city. It is definitely doable for novice hikers as well. There are many lookouts along the way, as well as large rocks you can sit on to take a rest and the summit makes a great spot for lunch!
Daniel H
5 out of 5 for hiking and the views at the top. 3 out of 5 for all the trash on the trails. Come on New Yorkers stop treating the park like a trash can. We can do better than this. Thank you to the woman picking up trash on the trail.
Colin Valentini
Great park, only about an hour and a half from Manhattan by car. There is currently a big surge of park-goers given the pandemic. Expect to park on the street about a 20 min walk away from the park entrance (they close the street entrance when the lot is full).
There are restrooms near the main parking area. There is also a basketball court, ice rink, and picnic tables.
The mountain offers great hiking trails with amazing views of the Hudson River. Totally worth heading up to the scenic points. The one thing that’s lacking is ample trail signage (I personally only saw one map posted and it was in an odd spot). You won’t get lost though and there are plenty of other hikers nearby.
Bring lots of water and have a great time!
Susheel Balachandran
Fresh crisp air, sound of flowing water in small springs all around, amazing views. Best place a a early morning weekend hike.
Samiha Khan
Nice place. It has wide parking and several trail. It has some food place around it too. They have toilets for everyone. Very sceneric.
arun sankar
The best trail to take here is about a 4 mile loop that goes through a part of the Appalachian trail as well as the major Welch trail, the trail starts off at a beautiful lake. Some breathtaking views once you conquer the first half of the hike! I would highly recommend taking this trail during the weekdays or super early on the weekends as it can get crowded during the weekends. P.S. make sure you have ample water packed for this hike!! At least 2 liters per person! Have fun :)
L M
Centrally located. Not too far from New York City New Jersey or Connecticut. I love this beautiful place! If you love nature, this is the place to go. Great for hiking and photography or just taking to the top. Fantastic views of NYC and over 50 miles in each direction. Go and enjoy it!
Hum Tum (aNDy)
My go to place, where you can enjoy the view of the beautiful lake and hills. You can go for a family picnic, do BBQ, hike, boat, etc.
Neil Hoosier II
This is my new post covid favorite place for a few reasons...
Before covid it was great with the popcorn style rescue zoo, ice/roller skating ring, merry-go-round, hessian lake with paddle boats, hiking trails and most importantly room for everyone! But, this spring, I'm noticing everything this place has to offer, there's a great big jungle gym group for the little ones near the far parking lot, a nice gift shop inside the bear mountain inn, picnic tables as fast as the eye can see, great views of the bear mountain Bridge and Hudson River, and a true cross section of America. I'm from Rockland and it is great to see that everyone utilize's this new York
Treasure from city pple to locals you're going to meet everyone here. #strengththroughdiversity

Love this place, gorgeous lake and several trails for hiking. Also great for family plus children hiking or simple walking. There are 10$ parking area, stylish stone inn with free walk-in cafeteria, which is little pricey for simple snacks and sandwiches. So, if you care about specific food choices, take your snacks with you.

my family have been comin here for over 40yrs takin advantage of the beautiful mountains and lakes that are cradled between em, plenty of wildlife, waterfalls and whatever else nature treats us to. places like these should remind us not to destroy the natural and wildlife world and we should do everything possible to protect anykind of development. KEEP THE LANDS GREEN
William Keegan
Great 2 mile hike up the white trail. Great workout for legs and your core. Right now the sun sets around 440 so I would recommend doing the trail a bit earlier than 12pm. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the fall foliage.
yusuf mufaddal
This is a great State park at just an hour's drive from Jersey City. There's something here to do for all age ranges. The trails are very well built, and from the Bear mountain peak you can get a good aerial view of Manhattan. If you're looking for paddle boating, it usually has a 40-60 mins queue. There are slides and swings for the kids plus the merry go round (shut during COVID-19).
Emily See
As a first time hiker, I would say that this trail is pretty challenging. I would recommend doing the trail counterclockwise. So start with the path closest to the lake and make your way up the scramble. If you chose to do it this way, you do all the work at the beginning of the hiking, and relax going down the stairs at the end.
Stephanie C
I hiked 13 miles over West Mountain, The Timpe, Dunderberg Mountain, and Bald Mountain. Great trails, perfect amount of challenge, beautiful views. $10 parking fee. There were not too many people on the trails, but there were hikers on every summit. There are lots of cool things to see along the way (waterfalls, Doodletown ruins, history, a mine, the Hudson River, the NYC skyline, stone bridge).
I was the 3rd car in the lot at 9 a.m. When I returned at 3 p.m., the lot was almost full. The Bear Mountain Inn and other various buildings are gorgeous stone.
I visited on MLK Day (a Monday in January). I would bet that summer weekends would be super crowded.
Erin Grey
We came here yesterday, a gorgeous sunny saturday in October during peak week of foliage, with a nor'easter in the forecast for the next day (going on now actually). We got here early, about 8:20am (we live 90mi away) and the parking lot was about 1/3 full. $10 to park. The trails are absolutely beautiful, some had lots of stone stairs, some rock scrambles. Great views. Probably not great for kids under 6 or older I would say unless you carry them. The foliage was stunning on the trails. Glad we went when we did, because there probably won't be leaves next weekend (hence why I mentioned the weather in the beginning of my post). The trail started to get busy as we descended. Oh, and by the time we left at 11:30, there was a huge line of people to get into the park.
S S
I loved my summer visit here but the staff at the parking booth needs improvement. I expect all park employees to have a basic knowledge of the park amenities and she did not. Also would expect the parking booth, where they take your money, would have park maps but we had to enter the hotel to get a map (desk employees were fantastic). The grounds were impeccable. The lake is GORGEOUS. Pedal boats are available for rental but it didn't appear you could launch your own kayaks. There were plenty of picnic tables and grills and paved walking paths. We went to use the pool which is almost 1/2m from the parking area and we were convinced there must be another parking lot, but, there isn't. Large pool, overstaffed with guards but that's ok. Prepare for a long walk and multiple sets of stairs to get to this pool and there is an admission (the website says it's free like other state parks. It's not). There are no grass areas for lounging. It's all concrete but there is plenty of room for everyone. Its is a beautiful poola and setting otherwise. We didn't visit the nature center, which was beyond the pool path because we were afraid of how far it was, based on the walk to the pool! Perhaps another visit.
Poor Hello
We always enjoy the open spaces and the zoo at the park.
There is plenty of outside experiences e for every age. The zoo is very nice with all sorts of animals native to the area. The bears , coyote and foxes area always a hit with the kids.
You can get out of the car and to the zoo and back in just an hour plus or so. Take your time and take it in. The scenery overlooks have a lot to offer.
There is also a skating rink and carousel to enjoy.
Hungry? The cafe/ snack shop will help out with that hungry little one.
Enjoy the great outdoors.
IRINA KRASNOV
Nice place to spend time with your family and friends. There is a nice Zoo.
There is a big parking lot, it costs $10.
Amit Laddha
Amazing place if you want to do a quick tour in nature. Lot of things to do like peddle boating, hiking, kids stuff open air swiming pool and picnic tables. Amazing view, great drive and top of the tower.
Tip: must climb the tower for the best view.
Can go on a quick trip after first snow or to see fall near.
Trixy D’Trapp
ice skating! hiking! easy to get to! it is what i need it to be, and have had some nice afternoons there. is it, like, special? no, i don't think so. but that's ok.
Nel M
Beautiful place to setup a bbq or gi with friends on a hike and swim. The pool is big but the clorin really messed up my eyes alot of burning. There is a $2 entry showers, bathroom, changing room. Bring park chairs to lounge in the side of the pool or blanket. Did the hike with stares a challenge but worth the view. Got on the boat it was soothing. $10 per person and $20 deposit return. Bring your own food only ice cream vendor open and $3 sodas and water. Come prepared spend less and have more fun
Andre Marks
I was my first time there but literally they have almost everything for nature goers hiking skating, camping etc it's really beautiful it's better with a family members or that special someone.
Daniil Olkhovskiy
AMAZING PLACE!!!! I never regretted that I went there with my family. First of all this spot is very close to New York City, it took me only one hour and 24 minutes to get there. First we drove to the top of the mountain, beautiful view, tower to visit. They have snack machines and restroom as well as parking there. After that we want to the main parking lot, its huge, you will always find where to park your car (the price is $10). Many people occupied tables for picnic, most of them located by the river where you can rent a kayak or paddle boat. I do not know prices because we did not do it. This place have a small zoo, it is really small, but gorgeous. You can see some animals, such as: bears, foxes, birds, and amphibians. There are two small museums. After walking through the zoo you coming out to the bridge also having a great view, but it is very windy there so hold on to your heats. We also visited huge swimming pool, it cost $2 a person (they do not have any lockers, only changing rooms and showers). Pool is great with variable depth range (deepest is 11ft) There is a spot to jump into water. There are small cafe and restaurant located inside bear mountain inn building. Visit this place and you will never regret it.

Perfect place to walk during the quarantine. In normal life this Amazing place turns into a mad house with tipsy people eating and drinking every few feet with garbage around the lake.

It’s like heaven in the backyard. I live an hour away from this place n it’s so beautiful to visit anytime of the year. The drive through Harriman state park n seven lakes that’s beautiful.
Furkan Aktas
You are filled with peace at the entrance. When you park your car and proceed a little, a lake with a magnificent view welcomes you. Then, as you begin to climb the mountain, your lungs fill with happiness and air. You may encounter various animals as you go up. I saw two or three eagles and different spiders. But compared to its name, I did not see any bear :)
ncrimi
What can be better than skating outside ? Family and sun and music.
It would be nice to have 2 cashiers on a busy day.

I came here through Circle Line Cruise yesterday. This place is amazing. They have a cute little zoo that is free (they only ask $1.00 donation) and the lake is truly beautiful. I also visited the nearby Inn to buy some souvenirs. I just wished that I could have stayed longer than 2-1/2 hours. Next time I will drive up and spend the day. I really want to do a hike.
Brenda Karika
This park was a total delight. My husband and I (oldsters) rode the carousel, enjoyed the zoo and exhibits, shopped the gift store in the Inn. Was going to eat upstairs but only brunch was offered that day and didn't have a big appetite.
Extremely impressed with the exhibits. Lots to read but so informative and well done! Beautiful area.
DIVYASHREE VIJAYKUMAR
It’s a beautiful place. There is a lake and you can barbecue around the lake. You can also paddle a boat on this lake. Nice to spend a day here!
Salsabil Yeasmin
You won’t be disappointed at this state park at all. It has space for BBQ, games, photoshoot, merry go round, boating and as everyone knows it’s perfect for hiking. Make sure you take your hiking shoes even if you pre plan not to hike. The mountains will amaze you and you will want to keep going back over and over again. The parking fee is usually $8-$10 which is decent.
Nadine Berry
Bear Mountain is a beautiful area to visit. The scenery is breathtaking. They are obviously feeling the effects of the drought New York state use presently experiencing as the grass areas were all brown.
Elina Ter-Avanesian-Nazarov
It’s amazing park!! incredibly beautiful!! be sure to climb the very mountain! very beautiful view! there is a mountain hotel, vacation with my family is highly recommended! you can ride on boats, swim in the pool and fish)) there will not be bored !! there is parking, which is very important!!
Usama Mabrouck
Beautiful place for hiking
Edwin Reyes
Amazing experience in the mountains. Great scenic views, trails and a little bit of history! If you are an outdoors person and don’t mind a hike, this is a great destination! Family friendly, activities and a good place to sit and be inspired!! A must visit, not too far from the city. (NYC)

This was my first time here but definitely not my last. I really enjoyed the sceneries..what beauties!
The zoo was closed but weather was perfect for the short hike and pictures we took. I would like to return this winter for skiing if possible.
Warren Stilwell
Great place to leisurely walk around the lake, take in a BBQ or hike the mountain. Love this place. Get there early, preferably before 9:00am as this place fills up quickly.
Smeraldo T
What a beautiful place to go!
It is close from city so you dont have to plan for a long day trip. Tracking course is not difficult to walk but may little harsh for kids. But there is a beautiful lake as well, so if you dont feel like climbing, you can walk around it.
One of my favorite part was looki g at the waterfall. I love listening the sound and watching water flows.
Frances Fan
Driving an hour or so from NYC, we find this place lovely!!
The view is really nice. Kids are running in the field, playing in the playground, or paying $3(?) for the Mary go around.
Great spot for BBQ, but you gotta come early to reserve your spot.
Long line for paddling too.
And it you come in late, be better to prepare the long line for parking. ($10 or $15/car?)
Trikaldarshi Persaud
We had a lovely walk around the lake. Picked up some food from Amish vendor and snack bar which actually serves beer. Park was crowded and we had to park and walk from roadside but otherwise a nice day to watch the leaves.
Andrea Wilhelm
Beautiful. Took about an hour and a half to hike up and about 30-45 minutes to come down. Great views both directions (did a loop). Good for dogs (mine is 13lb and had a blast) and not too difficult for novices (though definitely a workout).
Didn't find this info easily, so just so you're aware, parking is $10.
We went at around 11:30 and there was no one there, but by the time we left (2:30), the parking lot was packed.
Ramesh Kumar Cavala Ramakoti
Good place for hiking. Also a good place for people who love nature. Good for photoshoots. Beautiful views. Parking is hard during weekends so please come early for parking.
Jia Ji Lin
Bear Mountain is a good place to hike overall. The trail we took, which consisted of the recently constructed stone steps to the mountainyop was decently challenging. It took us about 50 minutes to get to the top from the base with time in between to take photos of the scenic views along the way. At the base, it was surprisingly hard to find a water fountain. There is one in the Bear Mountain Inn and one near the administrative office building. There were no obvious place to obtain a trail map, but we got by with the map posted on a board. At the base there's parking lots, the lake, and carousel. There are plenty of playgrounds, if you have any small children and the lake offers boats with feet pedals to travel around the lake at your leisure. You'll have to pay for the boats, however. Overall, a nice mountain to take friends, family or others to hike.
Jessica Holding
The staff were very helpful pointing us in the right direction of the trail we wanted to do. The trail was moderate and at times we veered off to side trails to cut ahead of people because it got quite crowded at times. Gorgeous views at many different points. At the top, where the tower is, you were able to see Manhattan!
A.C. Antonelli
Bear Mountain is a great opportunity to get outdoors just outside of New York City. The park offers expansive space to barbecue and picnic. Bear Mountain itself is a moderate difficulty hike, with very well maintained trails and stone steps. There are multiple routes. As I am writing this in the era of COVID, and I am an immunologist, I'll emphasize that you should always wear a mask while on the more crowded parts of the trail and social distancing is not possible; this trail gets VERY crowded. Be mindful of other hikers and if a group behind you is moving faster, step aside and let them pass, and if you're descending, yield to hikers ascending. Enjoy!
Aránzazu Ascunce
Friendly staff help you park. Grounds impeccably maintained. Gorgeous view of river and mountains from first clearing after climbing stairs for about an hour. Go as slowly or as fast as you'd like. Try the Paw ice cream at the café (vanilla, chocolate fudge and peanut butter)!
Mike Prange
Completed the tower hike up the mountain, challenging and scenic.
Jessica Nelson
Such a beautiful park to visit! So many outdoor things to do here. The hiking trails are great! There is a little gift shop at the Inn. A little zoo across the street. Restrooms at the bottom of the mountain and a few port-a-potties at the top. Beautiful benches randomly arranged at the top of the mountain as well. If you do the full mountain hike I would definitely recommend having proper hiking shoes and water! Very enjoyable hike!
Devora Sarah Alon
Bear Mountain State Park is really beautiful. It includes play fields, playgrounds, a zoo, hiking trails, picnic areas and more. The hole we went on (to the tower) was moderate- felt like we had a good workout on a stairclimber- with magnificent views. Younger kids enjoyed the zoo. Altogether, it was an outing that was well worth the hour+ drive to get there!
Tony B. Ferrandino
This State Park is amazing for the weekend/day getaway. The mountain itself is a bit of a challenging hike for those of us who haven't done exercise in a while however the view at the top (in person) is magnificent.
Bring the grill and food to eat, enjoy the local scenery or try out the In with gift shop and restaurant. Definitely worth another trip with my friends.
Red Rocket
Very nice park for all your outdoor activities. Fishing, hiking and boating. Nice place to take a ride to if you own a motorcycle.
Roman Iospa
Great scenic spot. A nice place to ride to on a motorcycle, especially the back roads. Will definitely ride there again. Ther tower is historic with few floors of embedded art on the walls. Can see wide and far from the tower. Enjoy!
yakkhanadha
Wonderful place.. if you want to feel the nature this is the place .. hiking ..beautiful seems.. you can do BBQ.. go with your family and friends.. this place is so beautiful guys..
Huzaifah Tahir
I went here for hiking and I loved the experience. The trails are awesome and they are definitely challenging! It has a Merry go-round, a small lake and there's also a free small zoo! Absolutely give this a chance if you are going upstate!
Nina Nina
Really nice park. I hope to come again to explore more trails. There was a nice lake to walk around, grass to sit on, plenty of bathrooms and a gift shop with snacks. I feel it is a really nice place to go with kids.
There are also many places to take good pictures, mountains and nice view around
Megan Mckeon
I went on a gorgeous sunny day and it was quite congested, both parking lots and the trails. I’d highly recommend getting their early on weekends. It was so packed cars were parking on the side of the road, which there were endless “No Parking” signs and those who did were issued tickets. There are two lots; one closer to the merry go round and another quarter of the mile up near the inn. The views are spectacular and well worth the exhaustion. Beautiful area. I hope to return soon.
Ridwan Meah
One of my favorite places in southern New York State. I believe it's the highest point within 75 miles of New York City, and the views to show for it. There's a small lake and park at the base of the mountain, but you have to take the winding road up to the Peak in order to get the views. Once there, you'll find well crafted stones and seating areas where you can sit, stand, and enjoy the view. Highly recommend!
Saeed Boor Boor
Was there early April - so didn't get to see the trees green yet!
But a nice place to go for a trek or a picnic at the lake..
several trekking trails - mostly challenging or extreme.. however they should have a guide office for visitors. The trail maps were black and white and not very detailed
Jqsmiiine
This place is absolutely beautiful. I went on a fairly windy and rainy day, so it affected the experience a little bit, but even so I think this short trip was worth it. We drove up to the highest peak, and the drive there was quite dangerous because there is essentially a cliff, but it's not that terrifying as long as you're driving safely. Once we got to the top, there were vending machines for pringles and drinks, which were about $1.75 (Pringles) to $2.00 (Drinks). Also, the castle structure at the top had a beautiful view. You can even see the New York skyline from above. Great picture location. We took many pictures, but be careful when you're doing so as some of the areas can be a little dangerous. Overall, I had a great experience and I wish I came here with my family. Also, I think this place would be the most beautiful in autumn because then all the trees would be vibrant colors.
Marie Khoury
This is a beautiful place! I went here with my family over the Columbus Day Weekend-- and we came just in time for the sunset! Surprisingly, it is a very quiet park. I highly recommend this!
Rahul Gupta
This is great place to go if you're just starting out with hiking. I did the Appalachian trail up bear mountain as my first trail ever and it was really fun, exhausting, and safe. The second time we went, we tried the loop trail which was a bit more difficult, so def not for first timers.
Stacey Gonzalez
It was great. Lots of turkey vultures around! Love nature. There's a zoo and museum. You can rent paddle boats and go fishing. Picnic tables and bbq (maybe bring your b own grill )is also available.
T Dubs
Great outdoor spot to go with family. Grilling, hiking, even a zoo for the kids. Recommended.
Sanna Salam
It is really beautiful lake with trails.multiple places for bbq grills.restroom are reasonably clean.lots of space.lots of natural beautiful around.multiple vendor machine for icecream and drink
Georgia Panagiotakos
Beautiful in any season. Picnics in the summer and sledding in the winter. A great escape for the weekend!
Jaclyn Varga
Not a very tall mountain at only 1,000 feet, but we did an 8 mile loop that was still a good workout with lot's of ups and downs. I really enjoyed the views and being able to see far from both sides, a beautiful sight of the Hudson snaking away and receding mountains on the other. We went just 5 days after hurricane Isais and they were still doing cleanup so there were many large trees down on the trail and we got a bit lost a few times! It's not dangerous though you can only get so far before you realize there is no path. I suggest the long hike for intermediate hikers, we met many lost beginners along the way. Stay safe, bring a map!
Esther Diaz
The park is pretty, there were a lot of people doing bbq and just having fun. The pool is huge and even though a lot of people go there you still have room and the only charge $2 per person and to get into the park $10 per car. only thing I didn't like was the changing room and bathroom the floor was all wet and dirty . I didn't get to the zoo. But the view is really nice.
LionHeart Wanderer
Wonderful state park with a fun adventurous activities for both kids and adults. Paid $10 to park walked up the Perkins Memorial Tower took us 2 & half hours and lots of breaks to get up walking down 45 mins.
John Krieger-Joven
It's a super popular park. Lots of city folk come up to get a taste of the outdoors. The trails are well maintained and there are many beautiful vistas. I highly recommend going up the Major Welch trail and back down the A.T. vs the other way around. The Welch trail is easier to go up than down.
Poornima Gupta
Beautiful place. we went there in last fall. I researched about it ahead and put the cafe name in bear mountain in google maps instead of directly putting Bear mountain. Bcz if you do it will land you in middle of mountain nowhere. We chose a short hiking route, there were markings everywhere what path to chose to go and return. There were volunteers around to help if you have any question. Also there was a lake if you dont want to hike, such a peaceful sight! people were doing barbecue. Overall good experience.
Luis C.
This is a great park to visit. Their is so much to do here. You can just hang out at the lodge and grab something to eat. They have lot of trails that you can walk. Their are some great lookout points. Theirs also a zoo the one thing I didn't like was the spaces for the animals. Though the bears have a big enclosure I felt that most of the other animals on display had mediocre spacing. In the summer time they have a pool it's fairly cheap often not too over packed. You can do plenty of walking and enjoy some great photo ops here as well.
J Kurmen
This is the most wonderful place to spend some time with the family or in a romantic way. The park is well taken care and all is awesome. I love it more and more every time I go
The restaurant’s food very good and the decor of the hotel beautiful
Andres Hernandez
Beautiful park to visit during fall. Is like a movie set! Great to take the dogs for a walk. We didn’t rent the boats but it seems kind of fun !
Nabeela Saleem
Beautiful location but you must plan out what you’re going to do before going. You might also want to leave earlier so that you can enter the park areas. Due to covid, there’s limited capacity and so once it’s full you’re diverted. We went around in circles. Besides that, it’s somewhere I’d like to go again when and if things calm down.
Angelo M
I love going here for my hikes and overnight backpacking trips. There are a few options of things to do here, such as hiking, sports, Carousel rides, ice skating(in winter months), a zoo, boating on the lake, nature walks, and historical walk around old Doodletown. Parking here is usually free after labor day, and you can park overnight here for your overnight trips.
shakira s
Hikes are beautiful. Breathtaking views if you're willing to take the trip. I did the Appalachian trail, my first time hiking learned so much about hiking and definitely will come more prepared. Bring snacks and water, great to have a picnic on top of the mountain and adventurous for kids. Make sure you know your way back or else you'll get lost and take the long way back.
Brown Water
Nice place but not much to do. Lots of walking, is a place to have nice BBQ with family and friends
Wen Wang
It was everything that a person can ask for. Or a family for that matter. Clean grounds. Manicured grass. Merry Go Round. Tons of picnic tables. Beautiful lake with paddle boats. Fishing at the lake. Hiking trails with trail side zoo. There is not much more to ask. if you forgot to bring food, just go to Bear Mountain Inn and have yourself some food. Plus, NO ADMISSION FEE, except $10 daily parking fee. 52 miles from NYC. Close to shopping centers or outlets. Not much more you can ask from state park. A must do if you live in NYC.
Arshed Hussain
Every thing was good except restrooms. Restrooms were so smelly and dirty. The Zoo was very informative. Please take nylon shorts with you if you want to enjoy swimming pool. On Sundays it is crowded. But if you come little early in morning you will enjoy on Sundays too.
Kelly Keifer
I drove all around here on a day that was a little foggy and misty. It was still beautiful and now that I saw it how beautiful it was during foggy and misty weather, then I know it's a place I'll definitely want to come back again
Sue L
Bear Mountain State Park is a beautiful park with a lake, a small zoo, a short walk to the Hudson River, plenty of hikes, and you can walk over the Bear Mountain Bridge which is adjacent to the park with beautiful views of the Hudson River.
Brinda Rao
Beautiful state park that is about 40 mins away from the hustle and bustle of NYC. A 25 min walk from the parking lot will take you to the beautiful bridge that offers great view. I’m definitely going back to see fall colors from this bridge.
The drive to this state park is beautiful, they also have couple of restrooms, ice rink, a lake and a huge covered area with picnic tables.
Definitely recommend
Rose Connelly
We walked around the animal preserve (free they just ask for donations) and it was super nice! My favorite part was the overlook over the Hudson- we got to watch two different trains go by, which my 5year old LOVED.
vasanth kumar
Scenic spot for picnic, easy stroll around the pond. Big open lawns, historic Inn and a merry-go-round too. Good Trails to cater for hikers
Flor Dieguez
It's a beautiful place to go and enjoy of the amazing nature We enjoyed the walk around of the lake 🤗. …
Damian Hernandez
I have been to this state park as a kid. I used to go ice skating during the winter months and enjoying the hiking, pool and zoo during summer months. I recall park police at all times but the last few years the police presence has been in a decline. The parking fee is now $10 per car, the lots are always full, the park makes enough money to have some kind of police enforcement and there is none. Today I noticed heavy BBQ and along with heavy drinking and pot smoking. People were doing whatever they wanted, speaking, making U-turns and even entering in opposite lines. Law and order is essential to this beautiful state park, let’s not ruin it. We need park police/park rangers or some kind of law enforcement to control the alcohol consumption and careless driving among other things.
Jason Whitcanack
Love this place. Went here every year when I was growing up. First time back in 30 years. It seems much smaller than I remember but just as impressive.
ritesh kumar
Okay.. i will start from here, This is a fantabulously fantastic venue for a complete family fun. A place to have everything for all age range. It includes lake, kids play area, boating, barbeque area, n number of wooden table and chairs, big lush green field with real grass for kids and family to play, Merry-Go-Round for toddlers, trekking, fishing, boating activities. The place have scenic beauty for photographers to capture moments, lot of birds are also there for bird watchers.
The place have big zoo "Trailside museum and zoo" with lot of animals, the good thing is the zoo is not having any animal or bird caged for fun but all are either injured or orphans, i really respect the governing body for this noble act.
There is also one war time museum.
Also this place have a cozy cafe at bear mountain inn to have some coffee or to eat anything.
I must recommend this place for your weekend picnic spot find sometime and go there spend time with nature.
One more thing, kindly dont kill fishes and do not litter the place.😊
Alona K
The hike UP the Mountain is not for the weak of heart, but so worth the VIEWS! The foliage is SPECTACULAR in the fall!
Vladislav Zborovskiy
Best destination to escape rush and pollution of The city. Amazing and maintained 4-5 hour hike, places for BBQ with resting area next to a lake, and out of nowhere O_O swimming pool. Family is gonna be happy ! Don’t forget to check the weather though. ;-)
Daniel Donnelly
A rehabilitating excursion from anywhere! Majestic views in all directions, with nearby West Point and distant Manhattan visible on clear days. Frequent events like vintage car shows, custom motorcycles and Oktoberfest (2-hour wait on the line to the bathroom, so drink accordingly!). Parking plentiful.
Noor Bombaywala
Great place to visit from spring to fall. Enough paid parking, plenty of paddle boats to rent, fishing allowed, kids Carousel, lodge, Cafe and hiking trails. Overall good place for a fun family picnic.
Jeslin Varghese
Whatever the season, hiking the trails here are always a pleasant experience. Looking forward to exploring more trails here.
Khadiga N
Very peaceful, spacious and filled with nature
We had a bbq (brought our own grill) and spent the afternoon here
Indrayani Thakare
Beautiful hikes with splendid views. The hikers cafe And inn is an interesting place. Refreshing and close to the city.
kal loul
You’d never believe how beautiful this place is. Especially for a place being an hour away from nyc. You can actually see the skyline from the highest point if the weather is not foggy. It’s a nice spot that is not too far from the city and that allows you to get away from the busy crowded city life. They have pretty good restaurants in the area as well as some resorts if you’re planning on staying the night. You can also just drive there and go for a hike
Bhagyashree Waranashiwar
Oh it's a beautiful place to visit in summer. It has lake, zoo, hill top, green land and cafeteria. Visited this place on a bright sunny day! What a view from top of the hill. You can see many mountains, it has such a scenic view and if the weather is good and sky is clear you may see the new york city skyline from the top. The lake is peaceful, water is clear and it has green land. So you can enjoy a full day picnic at this place. They have a cute cafeteria where you can get some snacks and cold drinks. It has trails to go to the mountain top and if you prefer going by car you can take the scenic drive. It's worth watching views. Pretty good place to go and chill with your partner, family, friends. And off course you can take many pictures here. Absolutely loved it!!💯
Ling Huang
This state park is a very relaxing place to hike and watch mountain scenes with foliage. There is also a placid lake there along with a small zoo. Kids love it.
JUNG HOON CHOI
Great state park for family. Tranquil trails. Carousel, ice link in winter. Small zoo with bears.
D K
I love Bear mountain and always have fun but it was way to busy today and social distancing was basically impossible on the trails. Some tried but many didn't care at all. Highlight today was a huge Black snake and seeing a 5 lined Skink. I've never see a lizard this far north
Daniel D
It is a very nice state park. However, I would recommend staying away during the summer if you are not here for the lake. Hiking is absolutely awesome here and you can see new York City on a clear day. Visit in the fall to see awesome autmn colors. It is also kept very clean! The only downfall is that in summer parking is $10!
Jonathan Bollback
The park is beautiful. It's the amenities. There is NO parking near the trails except at that Inn. So hard to get to trails. This time of year there is no fee to park so that is something I guess.
MITEIGI0101
Had a ton of fun with the family for a nice bbq. The only con would be that there were way too many people visiting there.
Barry
Beautiful mountains and sceneries. Worth spending time getting to know the place and surrounding areas
Ruth Conlon
Spend an hour climbing 1000 steps through trees to reach Perkin's tower and an hour to descend. Nice views of the Hudson and surrounds half way up and at top.
Ahmad Abbasi
I had been hearing about Bear mountain for the longest time. I was somewhat disappointed when I visited. Facilities are few and far in between not to mention the fact most are not modern or clean. Some of the parking lots are in bad need for repairs. I've been to many national parks in and out of State. Bear mountain is definitely not one of the best.
Brian Evans
Grew up enjoying Bear Mt, the zoo is wonderful and will be great once the animal enclosures are updated.
Sraboni Paul
Really beautiful. Great for family outings, paddle boating and hiking. However, it does get really busy on weekends and holidays because it seems like everyone from the areacomes with their family to barbecue or have a picnic here.
tenzin stranger
01/18/2022 I when there. Beautiful views but ice were frozen so hard to wake on mountain way.
dina n
Great state park with many trails to hike, a merry go round, ice skating rink, boat rentals and Cafe. There are so many options. Check the website to make sure the sites you want to visit are open. Some are seasonal. There is also an inn where you can rent rooms.
Kenya Porter
Great place to spend the day with friends and family. There is a pool, petting zoo, museum, and many other amenities that you can enjoy together. I had an amazing time with my family yesterday... hope I can be of assistance with planning your day out.. Poll has a $5 entry fee per person but you are allowed to get in and out as many times as long as you keep on your wristband. The zoo is free but they do accept donations of $1 person. There are peddle boat rides that are perfect for two people who want to really enjoy nature.. other activities include bbq, fishing, merry go round and more.
Dennis Garrett
Wonderful state park, plenty of hiking trails and walking paths. Gorgeous vistas. Great place to just take it all in.
Holly Huff
We just did the short walk around the lake (fully accessible- paved and flat and can be accessed from the carpark), nice views of the hills from different points.
Laura Siner
Lots of trail options for hiking, including some that are challenging. Well maintained. Spots for great views over the Hudson. I'm looking forward to going back and seeing more.
M R
Beautiful place to go Walk around, BBQ or just relax. There's a pool but didn't get to go there also there's a Merry -go- round but not open on weekdays. For the zoo it's only open on weekends. There's a few activities go before going to make sure it's open. Bathroom are not clean just FYI. Go enjoy the scenery and please do not litter!
Danny Mcguiness
Great roads too explore, Perkins memorial with fantastic views, 7 lakes drive is a must, arden valley road best motorcycle road on the east coast!
Edwin Lozada
Beautiful state park, it's a refreshing getaway. Nice trails with great views, Perkins memorial is a beautiful drive and place to relax.
Mitch Miller
Great relatively short trail with a nice scenic payoff at the top. Some of the rocks are on the more difficult side. Not recommended for young kids.
Carmelle Sunshine D'Haiti
It is the most beautiful, peaceful, a d relaxing place I've ever seen. I'll go back in the future for more relaxation and family time🙏👏 …
Rashmin Dave
Must visit.
Beautiful park, lot of activities to do.
Nice place for a picnic.
Busy on a weekend.
Serge Y
I like this place! It is especially beautiful in autumn. Here you can simply explore the surroundings. And you can go hiking.
Danyo Ip
Been here many times. always find something new to photograph. great to come with kids during the summer. bring your fishing rods and don't forget your fishing license. Lots of lakes here for water fun like canoes and kayak. Bring your own gears though. I don't think they rent it here.
There's a few good spots for BBQ, bring your own grill cuz the grills there are pretty dirty and old and broken down. there's a pool by the bear mountain inn. Actually they do rent water gears at the Bear Mountain inn. they have like paddle boats. don't forget ocktoberfest. but is just past.
Edward Herrera
Beautiful Park. I love this park. Been here twice, the beauty of nature is amazing. I recomend going in the fall. Great place for a hike, I recomend hiking bear mountain. The "white" trail will lead you to the very top. Pictures are from April -05 - 2018
Nancy Wind
Hiked early November with my son. Beautiful spot. Easy drive from NYC. Loved going into the tour and learn about the early history in the area. Amazing views all around even able to see the skyline of Manhattan.
Alan Wong
Great spot for families. Big lawns, merry-go-round, stroller friendly paved road around the lake.
Oh yeah and you can hike up the mountain. (not stroller friendly)
Francisco C
Most of the time I came to this place on my motorcycle, you can ride up to the top of the mountain to park (car or motorcycle) to enjoy the beautiful views. Another times to joke the red, white hiking trails. This time we went to the mini zoo they have there. It is an amazing small zoo to go around here to watch some animals, don't expect 1000 animals, just expect have fun with your kids and enjoy the peace of no traffic and 10 000 people me to you like the big zoo. Also you can bring food or have a BBQ in the BBQ area and walk around the lake.
$10 per car to park(after 4:30pm is free admission to parking area), after that you can bring put your self, friends family and start to walk around all areas. Zoo is free after you get inside the park.
Jason Wynkoop
The AT part is a moderate difficulty, well-maintained significant elevation gain hike. That's the way I went up to the peak from the inn. The observation tower was closed, so a bit of a bummer. Coming down, I took the Major Welch. It is a more challenging section because it's ungroomed. Boulders and slick rocks around and it's important to find the blazes because lots of things that look like trail are not. I went up around 830 and it was not crowded, but very busy near the trailhead at the end around 1030.
Arlyn Rivas
I get in love with that place, at night there a really nice view and it is cold you have to go with a sweater but is really romantic, you can see manhattan from there.
Luis Molina
I just walked around the lake close to the main entrance. I saw some wildlife like turtles, vultures and several small birds. Unfortunately the zoo and the museum where close the day that I was there, so nothing to say about it. Also I didn't have enough time to explore the rest of the area.
James David Redding
Driven past many times, this was the first time stopping. The hike we did had some challenges, but was great. Gorgeous views at the top.
Kenneth Wilcox
Amazing fun and clean. Very much enjoyed myself. The water was crystal clear.
Imrul hassan
It is Beautiful on summer days. Top of the mountain has great view and
At the bottom very nice walking place with lake. Great place for family.
Abu Antor
Great place, awesome views and very welcoming. Parking the car cost about $10~. You can go for breathtaking of hills. Be aware there aren’t much places near by to grab food in my experience.
Oisin
Love this mountain, great for walking, running hiking biking, bring the whole family, have a picnic, go swimming in the summer, ice skating in the winter! I usually run or cycle the mountain. The views from the top are nice especially on a clear day. Watch out for the bears ;)
Natalia Spinelli
Appalachian trail hike is beautiful! Bear mountain state park has beautiful views and VERY well maintained trails!!!
Venkata subramaniam S
Very nice place for one day trip..
Charles Cowans
Went with friends and coworkers. Everyone had a great time even though it rained some. The park is beautiful. All of the people were nice and friendly. The staff were exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly as well.
sudeep kumar palempalli

ABDALLAH IRAQI
Beautiful mountain area. Quite and peaceful
Heather Charles
Beautiful well kept lots of activities only $10 to park
Nadia Reinoso
Beautiful place 100% recommended, full space and different things
crazychick4x4
Very beautiful! I would go in the off season tho. Everyone and their dog, and I mean that literally, came out to enjoy the sun! We were trying to find the Zoo but the GPS was giving us the wrong entrance. By the time we figured out where to go a whole mass of ppl (who knew where they were going) decided they wanted to go to the Zoo as well. Had a nice walk tho.
Jon Chang
Great hike up 2miles of stairs to Perkins Tower. Was difficult for my 25lbs dog. Had to carry her the last 0.5 mile.
Mary Barbone
Relaxing and beautiful scenery. Did a little hike through the national park. Highly recommend!
Michael Palutke
Great place for a hike. Careful if it's wet, it gets slippery. Didn't see any bears.

Okay for 1 day visit. Row boat is nice , panic is nice , the animal trial is nice. The pool is huge and admission is reasonable. Water is surprisingly warm. Beware of petty thief. I almost lost my dirty underwear and water bottle. I guess it is okay since the thief probably need something to "wipe" his face in a hot day 🤪 …

Great place to spend the day hiking, or just being surrounded by nature.
James Vigorito
Beautiful N.Y. State park and the summer time car cruise on Wednesday night 5pm to 9pm are absolutely amazing. A verrrrry broad spectrum of cars to behold Hundreds of cars and bikes. Weather permitting it is a Great show.
Naurice Witsell
Breathtaking! Plenty of fresh air. Nice to get away from the city for a little while. Definitely come back.
Shobhit Verma
This is great place for getting an Arial view of a city around with a picturesque of lake and mountain meeting at a horizon… the best part is watching a beautiful sunset and tops that if you come down the mountain you find a children play area, huge lawn and a beautiful rustic look hotel (which gives a look of a castle)
Some tips - take a barbecue kit, picnic mat, juice/water to keep you hydrated, also some portable seating for the Mountain View.
Pinaki Dash
Nice fall colors , good place for kids and family to spend the entire day
Stacy
Beautiful park however DO NOT visit on weekends!! Crowds of people leaving behind garbage. Loud music and just plain disgusting and rude…trails are beautiful. Without the infestation of people this park would get 5 stars. So sad the lack of respect these people have for such a beautiful place.
Lien David
Great different views of different seasons, trails and facilities are okay.
Markus Hengstler
Awesome trails. There's a zoo, a museum and a historical site (Fort Montgomery), too!
Bar Regev
A beautiful landscape that’s a special part of the Tri-State area. Very relaxing, air is clean, and the road to the peak of the mountain is a must when open.
Alex S.
STAIR MOUNTAIN! In my entire life I’ve never done a hike with so many stairs. My health app calculated I made my way up 59 floors worth of stairs. The views were absolutely amazing without a doubt but the stairs had my legs shaking while taking a breather at the top of the mountain. Didn’t see any bears. Saw more stairs than I’ll ever want to see again.

A day out to this beautiful place and the drive is incredible. This place is for the individuals that love nature and most importantly fishing. Seven lakes on the way and also a small beach lake around one location.
Jesus AgVideos
Is great place to visit plus is interesting to look out. Plus workout for the family. Very clean investment.
Haris Muhammad
Best best place for family & friends gathering... Love the sight seen from top of the mountain. Some motorbike riders are very nasty. Other than that very nice & beautiful place.
The Eliminator Of Evils
Great place for hiking and enjoy nature’s vastness 😍 …
BJ
Nice and well designed trail. The Major Welch trail is little bit difficult, not suggest any one with kids. Appalachian trail is much easier. If you want the best view, go with Major Welch trail and you may use Appalachian trail to go down the mountain. If you prefer driving, you may drive to the memorial tower, which is at the top of mountain.
April Pizarro
Most beautiful views ever, the best thing I decided was to go there at random climb to the top and enjoy the best view ever did some geocatching up there too 😀 😊 …
Charmenese Pulido
Great experience overall and great place to take your family for a barbecue or picnic. However, I was a bit disappointed in the fact that the female restroom had no soap when we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Someone should be checking every hour or more frequently with the amount of traffic this park gets.
Val k
Had a beautiful picnic but couldn't go up the mountains. It was beautiful hanging around people happy they're practicing social distancing and wearing masks. But bathroom s are terrible.
Ydamis Estrella
I'm a novice hiker and still managed to finish one of their hikes. Everything is very clean and well maintained. The view geta progressively better as you climb. I'm planning to return to do different hikes and when the weather gets better and everything gets greener. I highly recommend it.
Robert Olsen
The hike to the tower is a workout. We had a bad experience. The 2.5 year old crapped out half way up. The more athletic 4 year 8 month old and had a great time reaching the top.
LOTS of steps. Lots!
Good exercise
Chana Greene
Nice view from the top, but as I was driving down there was a sign for a scenic view and that was much better. Really beautiful view of the Hudson River, and very accessible because you can drive right to the viewpoint.
Peter Kocoski
This is a great place to take a hike or picnic they also have lodging and u can stay in the hotel which has a restaurant..there's also a zoo which has a ton of great animals to see like bears, coyotes ,a bald eagle various other birds and reptiles as well as historical artifacts and fossils there's a ton of things to see if you like that type of stuff...in addition to the hotel there is a merry go round basketball courts and an ice rink..
Daisy Gooz3
Its a great place to do so much. With beautiful landscapes, activities for all ages, sights to see, and places to spend all day. Bring your entire family or just come alone. Some of the activities are hiking, paddle and row boats; a zoo of local rescued animals; picnic; pool; skating; merry-go-round; walk around the park; sight seeing, etc. You will love it too.
Nola Hatton
We experienced a beautiful relaxing afternoon it has been years since we visited Bear Mountain. My daughter had her high school graduation party at the private cabins lots of great memories.
Sergey Chernyshev
Great walk around the lake and a trip to the top of the mountain! I’ve been here many times in the last 20 years and enjoy it every time. And they have an ice rink k in winters too!
Larry Lara (LL)
No Lockers! I repeat, there are no Lockers! The pool was great. Very big. Has a section for dive and Lap. It was enjoyable. Cash only! Best 5 buck spent.
Manuel Rios
A great place to hike for everyone. Challenging for fit people and easier trails for the little ones.
Andrew Seelall (MrAndy)
Quite a beautiful place to hike. The trail I followed is the blue trail that's easy at first, but gets a bit steep the higher we went. About a 90 hike up and about half that coming down. We went a bit early during the fall so when we reached the top we didn't catch the trees changing colour. Will try again later this year. The view is gorgeous overlooking Stony Point. Other hikers were nice passing by.
Alicia Apgar
Had a wonderful time here with the family. Great views and so much to do no matter what you like to do. The pool was lovely!
Edelin Cardenas
I just love this place , it’s my first time going and I simply felt in love
The outing view is amazing,, do take the time to on on a hike you will see the beautiful surroundings and wild creatures,, the lake is enormous. You will come back soon.
Rushabh Joshi
Beautiful view! Great hiking trails. Be sure to go to the 'Ask me where to hike' booth and learn about the different trails, and choose the one that suits you best.
Al Roudbari
Great place to get some fresh air and walk, this time of year it is gorgeous!
Martin Alegria
Nice places for hiking ,the staff is so friendly and they explain all the choice you can have to a better experience hicking
David Cardone
Great views if you take the drive up. We don’t ever stay too long.
Rich L
Easy to get to from the city, it was a little cold as the wind channels through the mountains and across the lake but it was perfect hike!!
Carlos Alvarado
Very nice. Nothing like looking into nature from up top. Nice views and many places for pictures. The sundown is the best.
Daniel Webster
There is plenty of great hiking of all levels of difficulty. Amazing views and definitely check out the Bear Mountain Inn. You can bbq as well.
C. Y. Gutierrez
Great for a family bbq pool time then a hike up the mountain
Chris MG
Definitely a good place to relax your mind!
Lin Staley
We were in the East visiting family and took a trip up to Bear Mountain. If you are looking for a beautiful picturesque place to visit this is it. It is green and lush and the lake is a beautiful clear blue. There is so much history here as reflected in the brickwork on the buildings and as long as you're here, take a trip to Warwick and pick apples. Best trip ever.
yuanmeng wang
Beautiful vacation site, close to perfect! Zoo, swimming pool and hiking trails. I've been here twice and it's a wonderful one-day-trip choice escape from NYC.
Henry Montalto
Great place for hiking! Start at the inn and hike directly up the mountain for an intense hike or hang by the lake and relax. There is a zoo which is a hidden gem!! 👌 The watchtower will give you breathtaking views of NYC on a clear day, yes NYC! The Appalachian Trail runs right through as well so it's a good place to talk to some through hikers. PS the winter is great because you'll be able to ice skate.
PS. Go early or go later. Middle of the day can be uncomfortably jam-packed.
Kristen Rabeler
I went to the car show here. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have as many classic cars as I hoped. There were many cars but almost half were newer cars. The park itself is nice for hiking, skating in winter and picnicking.
BINOY CHOWDHARY
Its so awesome place . You can do fishing, booting, and many more....
Dorothy Dol
We loved this hike. A really good challenge, I climbed up with my 25 pound weight vest and turned the hike into a great workout. The views and weather was perfect. We will be back again.
Connor Theiss
Great place to bring the kids, the animals are treated nicely and ice-skating is a blast
Amaram Saivineeth
Lots of space for a picnic even on a busy day. Plenty of parking space. Number of trails with different difficulties.
Victoria Caggiano
Oh my God this is the first year and all of the 15 years that I've lived up here that I went to visit Bear mountain State Park so of course when I left the parking lot and so the souvenir gift shop there I had to go in and buy something well I really had to restrain myself by buying only one item but alas I didn't have enough money so I just got the one and then I went on my way to walk through the park to find my family who is at the pool it is lovely there other day I happened to go there were a few camps are but nothing terrible we really enjoyed it and then we left I would love to go back there again it was beautiful
joe
Wednesday car shows are great ..Cheap food beer and great selection of cars
Rob Steffens
Awesome park. Great trails. 👍 …
Fazil Khan
It's a nice place and pretty crowded. A lot of people barbecuing and at the pool. The zoo was just a couple of animals. I didn't get to try the paddle boats because the line was long. I can't comment on the trails because I didn't get to go on any.
Marion P
Thoroughly enjoyed it! So much to do for all ages. There were kids from a summer camp there as well as families with children. You can enjoy the scenery of the lakes as well as paddleboat, relax, or hike. A lot of hiking choices. If im not mistaken, the Appalachian trail goes through it
99 “99 Carpets” Carpets
This is a good place to enjoy with the Family. The waking trails is very long about 2 hours but we enjoyed a lot. I highly recommend it.
Carmit Dwayne Brown
Great place for family time. you can rent a boat, eat and swimming pool
Amanda Castillo
Will never forget the beautiful scenic views and during the month of March I felt as though my family and I had the entire park and Mountain to ourselves definitely suggest going during this time to avoid crowds
Alamin hossain
Really beautiful park. It gets really crowded during weekends, specially bbq and lake area. Driving to the summit is free. You can drive straight to there, and it’s not that crowded. Sometimes Route 6 closes down, it’s better to enter from the main entrance which is from route 202. Don’t turn in the parking area for the tower summit, keep driving to the seven lakes drive and keep right to the memorial drive.
Michelle Gonzalez
Beautiful especially right now with the autumn colors in the trees and all I can say is they should keep the zoo open later than 430 but other than that it was fun
S O
Vendors on site. Make sure you have pay pal or venom for the best kettle corn and pickle on a stick.
Trails are awesome, zoo and off trail museums are great.
Nickolas Juliano
Great hiking, not too hard, we did a three hour round trip up and down the mountain, stone steps on the two major trails meant we could climb it on a rainy day without too much trouble.
Farin Chowdhury
Not so far from New York City. The place is awesome. There is a huge parking lot, boat riding, you can have a picnic there too. If you don't bring food, there is a place for burgers and hot dogs (prices are good). And you must go to the top (doesn't matter if with bicycle or car)- the view from there is amazing.
Disha Patel
Views were amazing. I go there once a year just for the view, great place to hike and not so far from NYC.
boating is a plus!
Qi Zheng
As a Pennsylvanian now I fully understand why this is the #1 choice for Newyorkers to spend their weekends! It has the scenic views, the Hudson River turns, the bridge, the lakes, the trails, the Zoom, the secret trails to the fort, it even has the history where one of the Revolutionary War Chain defense was, and General George Washington handpicked West Point Fortress is only 15 min away!
Amanda Stalcup
Went to the 1915 restaurant inside the inn and the atmosphere was calm and the area was spacious. The food was delicious and perfectly portioned. The wait staff was attentive to the needs of our party and I could not ask for a better time.
Elkay J
Nice getaway area . About an hour and change drive from the city which makes it convenient to get away for a day. Large park area includes picnic area, playing field , nice view of a river and a pool
John Ohanian
Been coming here since I was a kid. It is my go-to spot when I want a little mountain-ness and don't feel like driving for hours. Nice walking and hiking trails located in close proximity to New York and the metropolitan area. For hikers, trails connect to nearby Harriman State Park. There is a small zoo, paddle boats on Hessian Lake, ice skating and other activities; accommodations and dining at the Bear Mountain Inn; and a very popular Octoberfest. Sweeping views of the Hudson River from certain vantage points. There is a Short Line bus that services the Bear Mountain Inn from New York.
family ties
Dog-friendly...the zoo is free, great hiking trails, there is a pool that only costs $5, boating is also fairly cheap...a great way to spend family time
oleg gonik
Beautiful place to spend a day.
Lorraine Townsend
The zoo was a big hit with my little grandsons. The people stationed at each display were great - answered questions about the animals and had stories to share about them.
Mushky Rabinovich
Such a nice place! The zoo is so nice and very kid friendly! Nice barbecue/picnic areas! Lake is beautiful!
Emilio Regonini
Amazing park right by NYC and along the Appalachian Trail
Mirelys Pereira
We did the beginning hicking, and it was an amazing experience. Beautiful place, not only for hicking. Also to spend time with family around the lake. Lovely park!
Oat
A nice park for families, perfect for grilling in the summer. The hiking trail is pretty easy and beginner friendly.
Scott Moran
It’s a beautiful park. Every Wednesday they have a car show during the warmer month. And the Bear Mountain inn is a beautiful restaurant hotel
And how could I forget about th antique Merry goRoun
Matthew Germani
If in the area, must visit!! The drive to Perkins tower and the trials are amazing. The Inn, measum, mountain, lakes, etc are wonderful. Minutes from the Hudson River, where you can see the beautiful Bear Bridge. Please do yourself the favor of visiting if you love (or even moderately like) the outdoors
Rick Taylor
Very pretty state park at the corner of West Point and Harriman State Forest on the Hudson River. A nice place to spend a day or so. Not too much happening when I was there... Things not open or operated. I can't complain as they were not collecting tolls.
Julio César Meza Machado
Bear Mountain is a state park where you can. Visit during the weekend or any day by car , by bus or by circle line boat. Is one hour from NYC or NJ . There is an Inn hotel in the base of the mountain if you want to stay overnight , with a little lake where people comes and make picnics, there is also a road to go up in the mountain but is the parking is too busy you have to claim the mountain and leave your car in the parking of the Inn or come by boat or public transportation from Port authority in NzYC. If you come by boat you have to get up early At 9:00 Am and cones back at 2:30 Pm so is a day trip . The boat gets there around 11 Am and it gives you like 3 hours to explore the area if you don’t come back in time , you have to take the public bus, or the train or Uber . the boat takes more time because goes slow and is a guide describing all the surrounding that the boat is passing by along the Hudson River, don’t bring food or drinks is not allowed because they sell all those things in the boat also there is a band that is playing live music in the boat . If you hike up to the mountain it takes like 30 up and 20 mins to go down . Up there is you can view the beautiful scenery of the of all the forest and hill surrounding area and the Hudson River.
Eliseo Solano
Hike running big pool good for kid’s
Stacey Papin
If you're looking for a hike with an amazing view, this it's the place to go. It's a 3 to 4 mile hike that will have your legs sore the next day, but it is definitely worth it!
Dwayne
Beautiful place! Great place to take a nature walk with the family and see the animals in the zoo or take a dip in their pool!
Denise Thompson
Bear Mountain was extremely beautiful, my Husband and I went to Peekskill at his work place Sun Chemical to drop off something to the Office there, our way home, I'm gonna gave you a tour, it's the most beautiful place I've ever seen, I took great pictures, I was looking way over in New York City, we went into tower there where the views was excellent, it was breath taking, I really do enjoyed Bear Mountain ⛰️
卢本伟(55open)
I like to climb mountains, so I like it very much. It’s not too far to drive from New York. I went to play with a few friends. After I went down the mountain, I sat by the lake and had something to eat. It felt great!
Lori Mac
Beautiful place to visit, picnic, hike, drive up Bear Mountain! Stay at the inn, museum, boat rentals, something for everyone!!
Kenneth Suchoski
Drove to the top of bear mountain. Beautiful views. Long hike to the top if you walk but easy drive up.
Kenneth Rodriguez
Plenty of parking and the park is well maintained, awesome place to go for a walk or jog or even a bike ride or to just sit and talk by the lake
