Reviews of Whitewater State Park

I loved this state park so much. There were A LOT of stairs but so worth the hike! Most of the trails are shaded and there was a river to stop by to cool off. A lot of people fished and swam off the bank. So much limestone formations were there. It was so cool! The scenery was breathtaking.
I rate this park 10/10 would go again.

This is one of my favorite state parks. It's simply beautiful and has lots of trout angling. One of the great things about this park is no mosquitoes. The absence of standing water makes the park virtually mosquitoe free. Very nice swimming beach (especially if you like very cold water), bathroom and changing room. Camping sites for tents and campers. Also a private campground right in the park. Lots of great hiking trails and the view from chimney rock is beautiful. There is a small nature store and a visitor center that's quite interesting. A small store in Elba just outside the park has fishing tackle and some camping essentials. There is a fire tower in Elba you can climb and a trout hatchery nearby that's fun to visit but closed on weekends. This is a favorite day trip of mine and well worth the drive if your a nature lover.

Love this park! The semi-modern campground is by the trout stream and for those with tents the cart-in sites are second to none. For families there are swimming and picnic areas, fishing and even a separate gift shop. However I come for the hiking, which is the best in the MN State Park system outside of the North Shore. The hiking is quite challenging but with fantastic views. I recommend a walking stick for hikers who are less sure of foot. For the first time I had my greyhounds with me at the park and took a dawn walk on the hiking club trail. This turned out to be very challenging for the dogs: something like a sure-footed pittie, or a small dog you could carry would probably be fine. At the beginning there was a creek crossing on stepping stones. The water was high and the stepping blocks were not even and the dogs were rightfully unsure. The subsequent climb on switchbacks led to a spectacular ridge walk ending at Coyote point (be aware that if you do not like heights there is a sheer cliff on one side for some of the trail and at one point on both sides). Rue anemones carpeted the ridge amongst the trees and there was a cacophony of birdsong. Then came the next dog-unfriendly obstacle: a ladder. There was a little width to the steps and the dogs managed to get down but it was very dicey. So my bottom line is that this particular trail is not dog friendly for certain breeds and I would never take my greyhounds on it again. For a similar walk with spectacular views I recommend climbing the stairs from the meadow to Eagle Point, following the ridge along the Dakota trail and returning via the valley trail. There is also a very nice flat there-and-back trail along Trout Creek, but it also has some challenging creek crossings in high water. I did this particular walk on an earlier trip and the fungi were incredible. I saw more species of fungi on this one walk than I had ever seen in the rest of my life.

This is a very beautiful park and almost everything exceeds our expectations.
The visitor center itself is very well designed, and little kids can easily spend more than 30 min just playing there.
Today we only had about two hours so we followed a recommendation from the staff that we went directly to hike the Chimney Rock Trail. It was really amazing to see the Chimney Rock after hiking all the way to the top. And the scenery there is absolutely worth the hike! We even saw one bald eagle and one golden eagle soaring in the sky, both not very far from us. This is an unforgettable experience!
Not sure if it was always like that but it was quite windy at the top of the trail around the Chimney Rock. A proper clothing should be prepared for that.
Curtis Herbel
What a terrific state park. Cedar Hill Campground is nice. Site 11 (electric) is very level, lots of trees/shade and bushes to help separate sites. But the hiking trails really set this place apart. Chimney Rock and Inspiration Point trails are great but not easy, lots of stairs and steeper trails with large rocks. But you're also in the trees so it's shady and the views are worth it! These trails can be busy. Trout Run trail is flat and short, a pretty easy and quick hike. We'll be back!

Not a bad camping spot in this park no exaggeration! Have been coming here with family for years! We love the fishing, hiking, and swimming in the river. The towns of Saint Charles and of course Elba are absolutely heavenly places to shop and eat. We’ll always come back!

I will start with bathrooms accessibility and cleanliness, they are super good, maintained well. We stayed in group camp 2. It’s super private and dense. Enjoyed the stay and I found the best park to camp in MN. Good number of trails and small beach .
Millie W
We have camped here several times with a group from church - both by reserving a bunch of the individual sites, and at the group sites. The newer camping sites and especially appreciated; there are modern bathroom amenities available, as well as pit toilets distributed around all of the sites; the fishing is good to very good; the trails seem endless and are pretty well maintained. Best of all, depending on where in Rochester you live, it's only about a forty minute drive to one of the most enjoyable, possibly underutilized, state parks in Minnesota system.
Libby Glimsdal
Beautiful scenery. Campground had newer toilets, etc. But very few trees. There was no shade in the campsite.
Picnic area was beautiful and hiking trails were really nice.
Icebane Kramer
Great group site. Cabins don't have AC so be prepared to bring fans should it get hot. Some of the cabins are in the shade all day which helps keep them cool. The nearby trails and stream make it for an all around outdoor experience without roughing it too hard.
Danny McCargar
Beautiful park with very nice camping setup. Bathrooms and showers are new and clean. ZERO cellphone signal at the campgrounds and anywhere in the valley. Good combination of challenging and easy hiking trails. Hikers with small kids beware, very steep stairs at points, very narrow trails with very steep drops/cliffs one foot from the trail.
John Smith
Very nice place to take photos and go on a tiring hike going up many hills and lots of stairs. A perfect place to get your exercise in while snapping some photos of the beautiful landscape. On one trail you will find a creepy tree was a face on it in the middle of no where on a trail.
Carmin Santiago
By far one of our favorite parks to visit and camp at. The bathrooms are always clean. The trails are perfect for a variety of hike levels.
Dawn E Pfluger
Beautiful park! The campground is wonderful. So clean. Very peaceful. We hiked for a full day. The trails and clearly marked and easy to see. Some of the stairs were a little wobbly.
Colin Engstrom
Excellent park! Beautiful scenery and great trails. Creek was down but would be fun to paddle on. Great scenery and vistas. The hikes range from mild to really challenging. Sites are really well set up with alot a space between and brush for some privacy. Lots of vault toilets a few shower houses with private showers. Nice nature store and interpretive center. A new favorite state park!
David Odom
I only had a couple hours so I hiked the Chimney Rock Trail from the north picnic parking to Inspiration Point and looped around down to Trout Run and back thru the South Picnic towards the swimming beach. Beautiful and challenging with all the steps up and fall leaves but hope to comeback and cross off the other trails.
Shirley Alex
No mosquitoes, love the hikes.Showers in campgrounds are new and clean.Bring your bikes.
Curtis B
I'm a photographer and have been visiting the park to shoot pictures since the early 1990s. It's a great place for an excursion or to explore in greater detail. I've also spent time in the larger Wildlife Management Area that is adjascent to the State Park. I'll add some images here over time as I shoot the 2022 series.
Danielle Wachter
Campsite 5e is on the smaller side and doesn't offer much privacy (about half of the site was open to the road). It does have a big tree so if you stay here lights could be cute.
Bathrooms are very new and clean. Great hiking. Went in October and fall colors were terrific.
Kari Johnson
The trails to the overlooks are definitely worth the climb! Recommend wearing actual hiking shoes for more secure and comfortable hiking along the ridge. Fairly busy Park, but pretty much everyone there was kind and considerate.
Terry Meyer
The park has several hiking trails which also have different levels of difficulty. The lower level trails are the easiest, but the upper trails have great veiws!
Gina
Great place for hiking, swimming and site seeing. Lots of picnic areas.
Michael Gauer
We had a great hike. Especially on that secluded outcropping, where we celebrated our 32nd anniversary ;)
Stephen Stacey
Great place for a hike or trail run. Inspiration point is incredible.
Cody Payne
This place is beautiful. Lovely scenery, lots of trails and water to explore. The wildlife does come into camp while sleeping. A raccoon tried to steal our dogs food but I put the food in the car and all was well. Great fishing, and Elba is a great little town where the locals will help get you on trout but will help you find some more great places near by. Totally come back!!!!
Viktoria Nyari
Beautiful scenic trails... pleasant people along the trails!
Deb Lien
Beautiful views of the bluffs. Our 3 year old managed the difficult trails but trail types for all capabilities. Wonderful family spot. Showers and restrooms immaculate. Site 52 was a winner with shade and privacy. Unfortunately camper was too long to open to site so had to face the road but we managed. Get a pull through site if you have a long camper. Beach was groomed sand and loved by all. We will be back.
Justin Chapman
Genuinely, this is one of my favorite places on the planet. The valleys and cliffs aren't going to rival the rocky mountains or anything, but they're some of the driftless area's most beautiful. Adventurous hiking, great camping, a nice little beach, fly fishing, and lots of lovely spots for a picnic. And in the winter, it only gets prettier. 10/10 highly recommended.
Growler Pace
A group of about 80 really enjoyed our stay in the group camp. The cabins were bunk beds with very clean hardwood floors. There is a central outside fire pit between the main dining lodge and the trout stream that runs by. It was a pleasure listening to the stream, seeing the stars and talking with friends by the campfire.
Hopefully we will be coming back to a very secluded area in the future.
Susan DeBlieck
Great little beach with bathrooms, picnic tables and volleyball court. Close to trails.
Alex Sergeyev
This was a good hike. We loved the park. Clean and very nice. Need to get back as soon as possible
toddsnends
Nice state park. Says over 100 steps up. Yes ... maybe 300. Took small, older dogs up. Not great for them. Beautiful vistas. Good for humans. Just did the Chimney Rock loop.
Gustavo Mennillo
It is a beautiful place to connect with nature, I highly recommend it.

I love the trails at Whitewater State Park. I went in mid April and saw so many early blooming flowers and emerging plants with interesting leaves. I saw bloodroot, wild ginger, trout lily, fiddleheads and bellwort, as well as lots of plants I don't know. There is a wonderful scattering of all kinds of obstacles on the trail, making my hike just challenging enough. There are also easier trails at this park but I didn't need them today.
Rita Rickabaugh
Nice big park. Down in the valley with bluffs, trees and streams. 5 - Camper cabins look fairly new. Lots of privacy tent camping. Bathrooms/shower's are great 👍 …
Faisal Masood
An amazing park for camping, trails, hikes beach, places for bbq and so much to enjoy the nature.
There are multiple trails here to enjoy.
The park is approximately 2hr from Twin Cities, MN. You can take hwy 61 south along Missisippi river for scenic drive.
Michael Hecker
This was our first visit to Whitewater State Park and we enjoyed the hiking to Inspiration Point on a warm Saturday afternoon. Not too crowded and the swimming hole was pleasant to cool down. Be sure to take water bottles with you and the maps provided were easy to get acquainted with the trails.
Because of COVID the public restrooms are closed. The outhouses are gross. We asked about restrooms and they don’t tell you about the nice ones at the campground. The park has new clean restrooms at the campground easily accessible right across from the park office (see picture).
Alli Tripp
I love Whitewater State Park there's beautiful ridges to climb up and it's just a mile or even a kilometer loop for many little hikes; lots of beautiful views . In August times of wildflowers and plants! There are fireflies at night the campgrounds kind of close down for 2020 for some construction but there's some areas open just reserve them online
Mark Edwards
Very nice trails. Park offers a good variety of simple to challenging trails. We'll groomed area for picnics. Beautiful place.
T M
This place is full of adventurous trails and breathtaking views. Hiking pole/stick reccomended for anyone with knee/joint issues. Shoe wear with good tread, some spots get slippery.
Stacy
This is our 3rd year going to this park. We stayed for four nights this time. Everything was clean and well kept. I wish more restrooms had been opened, some are closed due to Covid 19, but there were enough to be comfortable (just time consuming to shower a family of 5). The beach was closed but there were plenty of trails to discover and the trails are very well maintained. Even though we stay for nearly a week each year we still find new places to hike and explore. Our trip is already booked for next year!!!
Taylor Miland
Great place to hike and catch the views.
Virendra Soni
Moderate trails, lush green and the view points are nice. Though there isn’t much view of river or bluff but the 360 view of greenery makes up for it. North picnic area has a nice swimming beach.
April Mead
Absolutely beautiful! A definite must stop for hiking and apparently fishing. We saw many fishing in the river and having a pretty good catch. Views are breathtaking and plentiful. There is plenty of hiking for a weekend of family time. Plus there is a beach, camping and picnic spaces.
Stephen Balza
Nice park. Enjoyed hiking to Inspiration Point and Chimney Rock. Trails are fairly well marked and maintained. Would use caution if hiking with small children as there are a couple slippery spots along the trail with steep drops on one side.
Saw one bald eagle.
Joseph McGie
I haven't been to White Water S. P. in a couple of years and it is still one of my favorite state parks in the state of Minnesota! There are so many beautiful trails and absolutely as few mosquitoes as I have seen in any state park. There are a ton of activities for kids including some buildings and a lot of Ranger demonstrations around the holidays. There are a few amazing vista's and areas where kids can play in the water or throw rocks in the river. There is a great beach for kids to play at and did I mention a significant lack of mosquitoes?
Tara Lewis
Well maintained, yet natural and beautiful. Our family had the best weekend here hiking, exploring, playing and fishing in the river, and camping. We will definitely be back.
Donovan Zielke
Amazing state park! Part of a driftless area. Some stairs and steep rocky hikes buy also some easy to moderate lowland hikes. Something for everyone here. Alot of very nice picnic areas as well. A short drive from Rochester or an hour drive from lacrosse Wisconsin.
Nathan Juenemann
Always Amazing. Part of the Driftless area Minnesota...full of wildlife and rare plants.
Minnesota state parks never disappoint. Whitewater is one of the parks I visit every year. I could go on and on about all of the avaliable activities and amenities, but would rather you check it out for yourself.
Karly H (Exploring the lakes!)
Planned a whole trip here!! Are friends are newly engaged and got the perfect photos of them!! The hike up is harder then I expected but so worth it!! Would love to come again and explore.
Fares Alahdab, MD, MSc
One of our favorite parks in MN around the Rochester area! It's big enough for an enjoyable hiking trip with a variety of elevations and trails. Numerous camping spots. Friendly staff that are very helpful. Once you take some of the trails to hike up the hills around the park, you'll see an awesome view of the whole area! So beautiful!
For best viewing of the fall colors (amazingly nice colors esp at this park), I'd recommend coming here towards the middle and end of October.
Be careful to use mosquitoes repellents to stay safe of their nasty bites! With the water bodies and the river, you should expect to see a lot of them, esp as it starts to her dark.
Overall, this is a cool park for group BBQs and parties, or just to go enjoy nature and do some hiking with friends and family.
Deborah Gibson
Beautiful State Park in the Minnesota bluffs. Hiking, camping, picnic areas, swimming beach, trout fishing. Hiking trails range from flat and easy, to more challenging climbing to the top of bluffs with beautiful views.
Wyatt W. Penke
Nice park has many decent hikes and trails. This place has some decent rock formations making it a fun place to stop. The camping areas look very nice and modern. Very spreadout and large. Trailhead parking is not labeled well and can be confusing but the ranger was helpful. Unfortunately the swim beach looks terrible. I wouldn't let any kids in it in the state that I observed it. Park is billed as having no mosquitos which i never did encounter. But there was still a ton of biting flies.
Jeff Lunde
Whitewater is a true jewel in the State Park system. The river, cliffs, range of vegetation and landscape, and the splendid vistas make this park a joy to visit in all seasons.
Adrian Lundeen-Hornung
This was my first visit to Whitewater State Park and first time camping in the bluffs region. A lovely park with plenty of diverse trails, a nice, little beach area, and camping facilities to fit everyone's preferred style (some with electric hookups, spaces for campers or tents, even a few, more secluded cart-in sites). The Chimney Rock and Inspiration Point hikes were beautiful and the trails are well-maintained (be prepared for some steep and rocky footing occasionally). The fireflies put on quite a show in the evening at the Gooseberry Glen campground. The visitor center is clean and has plenty of necessities, while the staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
Christy Stutsman
Excellent cabin camping experience here in mid August! Whitewater definitely had the newest and cleanest State Park cabins we’ve ever stayed in. The trails were beautiful/well maintained, swimming beach was fun for the kids(water is definitely chilly), park employees were friendly, and the kids came home without any bug bites! We will definitely be back!
Tomas Elke
This is a nice state park. There are several points of interest in the park. There's a beach that you can drive to. Most of the others require you to hike at least some distance, and have stairs from the road (or nearest ground path) to the point of interest.
Most of the hiking is pretty challenging, and at times I was wondering where the line between hiking and rock climbing starts. Some of the hiking trails go up very steep inclines. Some of those inclines are rocky, and basically require you to "climb" over rocks. Most of the inclines were just mud paths, so definitely don't try it in the rain.
We stayed in "cart in 4". It was a pretty cool campsite right on the river. The site was very shaded so there was pretty limited sun in that site. The bugs weren't too bad. Like most people mention, there aren't a whole lot of mosquitos here. There are some, along with some flies - some of which are the biting variety. There was a food locker here - which saved us from the raccoons and the pocket gophers that came into our camp almost immediately and took food while we were setting up camp. That's part of the experience.
If I had anything negative to say, it's that nearly all of the points of interest are really just high places on the ridgeline. Chimney rock being the exception - which is a pretty cool thing to see. I'm deathly afraid of heights, and a lot of the trails on the ridgeline follow steep drop offs on at least one side. Add to that the muddy terrain and the fact that you have to climb over large rocks on occasion and there are seldom trees nearby to grab onto and I was constantly in fear of falling to my death. By our third day there, I'd had enough of being freaked out.
Also, literally everywhere you looked was either wild parsnip, or stinging nettle. It's completely impossible to avoid. In fact, there are paths that run directly through huge patches of both, and at one point we turned around because the wild parsnip had grown so close to the path that it was actually criss-crossing over it.
Brita A
I love this park! We've hiked most of the trails and go to the beach with the family. It's only $7 for all day parking. There is plenty of camper and tent camping available too. There are bbqs pavilions and bathrooms which makes it a nice place for group outings.
Saleh Babazadeh
A great state park in the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The park is very well kept. We were greeted by a park ranger in visitors center. After paying the fee ( one time annual fee for all Minnesota state parks), we got the sticker for the car. We also got a map of the best hiking routes in the park. We took the Chimney Rock trail, since it was an easy one for a 4 yo and a 8 yo. The hike was easy. The bathrooms were closed for the season, but there were porta potties available. The fall season is wonderful and scenic.
Opeola Bukola
I'm not even sure if breathtaking can fully describe this park. My pay had an absolute blast and was absolutely exhausted after our 7 or so mile hike through Whitewater. The variety of terrain, lovely sounds and sites, and the great photo opportunities made this push such a treat to traverse, for new and experiences hikers alike. Be careful to use the maps well, because there are certainly some areas of unexpected trail confusion and precipitous peaks that you do not want to encounter without warning.
David Arnold
One of the best parks in the Minnesota State Park system. The trails here rival the superior hiking trail along the North shore. The bluffs are outstanding. Extensive network of trails for hiking. Lots of up and down so you're going to get a great workout. Southeast Minnesota really is a special place.
Yee Jensen
Hiked the Dakota Trail (~4mile loop). Rocky terrain with muddy parts (due to snow melting). Really amazing bluffs with great pano views and emerald green creek for trout fishing. Bathroom facilities are closed - do plan accordingly. And do register for parking pass online as we saw park rangers scouting the lots. Would highly recommend; lots of family friendly areas...
Marla F
Great hiking, decent camp ground and beautiful surroundings! Remember to stop at Cabin Coffee in St Charles before or after your hike!!!
Avery Hildebrand
Very beautiful must stop spot in MN! Be prepared to climb some major hills on most trails. Campground has recently been expanded so half is pretty bare and open to the elements.
Rhonda Hamann-Lease
Beautiful park. No internet but that was not needed for us. Nice showers. Nice trails with ranges of difficulty. All around nice state park.
Anne Mulvihill
There is so much to see here, and the trail variety is great - coyote ridge is quite the hike, not recommended for smaller kids, etc. Only downsides are 1. a road runs through the middle (it's not horrible but it does cause some noise sometimes) and 2. their wooden stairs need to be replaced.
Sarah Carsello
This is a VERY busy park! We went hiking for several hours, spent time throwing rocks in the river, hiking up a zillion steps to one of the best lookout spots in Southern Minnesota! We stopped at the visitors center for ice cream snacks and sat down to rest. My son was stung by a bee and the visitors center employee rushed to our aide with a bag of ice and bee sting medicine. Her professionalism and care helped my son significantly and prevented our wonderful day from turning into an awful day. Definitely now one of my top five favorite state parks!
Andrewski
Probably one of the most beautiful and enjoyable parks i have ever been to. Plenty of things to do. Hiking, fishing, trout stamp is a must. Very nice campsites. Bathrooms and showers are legit
myra basar
Amazing trails, stunning views, limited bugs, beach and picnic/grilling area as well as campgrounds
Brian Pringle
Great trails and excellent views. Only about 30 minutes from Rochester. Trout fishing in this area is good, too
Joseph Ford
Nice park, good hiking trails, good beach, fireflies at night were amazing. Our campsite had no shade and was kind of along the highway. Facilities we're clean. Very good scenic overlooks. Check out the fire tower in Elba, MN (2 miles away)
Sony Miller
Great bathroom/shower facilities. Clean. Wonderful hiking opportunities. Definitely worth the drive!
Brittany Wundermachen
Stopped here unexpectedly while on a road trip. Enjoyed running on some of the trails and hiking the numerous steps to inspiration point. I can’t wait to come back and explore this area more. Very beautiful and a nice looking picnic area.
wendy wagner
Didn't see one mosquito! Trails are absolutely stunning and the beach is definitely one if the best I have been to.
KZBay
Great campsites on or near the river. Good variety of hiking trails. Lots of trout in the river. Rolling bluffs and cliff walls give this park it's own identity.
DJ D
I went hiking here and the trails- while somewhat diminutive in length- traversed a variety of interesting terrain. There were several river crossings as well. For the seasoned hiker, cut the recommended hiking times in half (I hiked both the Coyote and Dakota trails in about 2 1/2 hours).
The Dakota trail is very reminiscent of hiking trails found in the Great Smoky mountains of North Carolina. There also were other recreational offerings at the park (swimming and camping seemed popular).
Overall a really nice park with something for everyone.
Roloxtv2
This park is very scenic. The park has a little sandy beach you can swim on the summer. Love the sound of the water from the stream.
Derek Lomas
Excellent state park in southeast Minnesota. Hiking trails offer a great views of the surrounding area. Trails were well-maintained and not too challenging.
Tiffani
Gorgeous Park. We rented a Cabin and loved it. Clean and cozy and the views from the trails are stunning!
Jessica Brouillette
Beautiful place, regardless if the season. Great place to see the wildlife. The camper cabins are brand new and barely used.
Abdullah Ali
Wonderful place for hiking and have a nice a view for the river
Ron Mottl
All of the rv and camping sights are covered by a canopy of trees. Great hiking trails, We were only able to stay one night but we will definitely come back for a longer stay. To many things to put on review check out the website.
Sugar
Beautiful park with scenic hiking trails. Can barely believe you're in Minnesota while you're there.
Christopher Kreisel
Best beach in Winona County hands down. Great hiking trails. State of Minnesota does a great job maintaining their parks. The $35 annual pass to MN States Parks is the best deal there is.
Carter
I will be back! I didn't get to see nearly everything, but these trails are incredible. I haven't been up north in Minnesota, or anywhere that densely wooded actually, but I'm sure it can't beat the bluffs and the views they give at this park.
Also, the park has drinking water for refilling bottles! Extremely handy, because I pounded right through my bottle and had left all my extra water in the car. It was good water too, the well source must be nice and clean.
Katya
It's a peace of solitude and sanctuary just 25 minutes away from Rochester. There are many beautiful trails and a quiet place to sit and contemplate life.
Blackfox 288
Challenging hike through one of my favorite regions of Minnesota. Beautiful limestone cliffs give commanding views of the river valley and surrounding countryside. This one probably isn't for the faint of heart or people with bad knees since mine are screaming for a few days afterwards after all the wooden steps you have to climb to reach the bluffs..
Amy Fisher
What a great state park. Flat trails, hilly trails, every kind of campsite. Helpful, kind staff. I'll be back.
Kjersti @ VCC
Beautiful quiet state park. Really enjoyed our visit. Be prepared for steep hilly terrain and stunning views.
Matt Jones
Outstanding state park with great amenities, and wonderful staff. A true gem of the Minnesota state park system. Always a great time and awesome experience. It's a must-see.....go see it!!
Barry Enquist
I love hiking at Whitewater. I go a lot and always enjoy it. Great views, great trails. It's not very far from home but I get the feeling of being away. It's very nice and I plan to do some camping this summer also.
john villegas
Absolutely beautiful, well maintained and we'll marked trails. Water is crystal clear.
marta Claros
Beautiful place to go camping.
Austin Gale
Love this place! First time going and it was absolutely stunning! So much to see and there is even fishing spots 😁 …
Mike Rutledge
Not enough shade. Way too many rocks in the camp sites. Bathrooms were clean and user friendly. Very few mosquitoes.
Stacy Schmatz
Hope to come back in the summer...the stairs to chimney rock were a death trap with the snow/ice/slush ....my dog didnt help the situation. Stopped at the main office and bought a pin, the Park Officer was very friendly and helpful.
Diane Graham-Raff
Great hiking trails, campsites with few mosquitos, nice visitors center and gift shop. The new 200 series campground has little shade, but that's to be expected when they just planted the trees recently. The older campsites have recovered nicely after the '07 flood. Really large RVs should consider the 200 series campground - some of the pull through s in the older sections are very small and overgrown (#68 is not recommend for tall RVs). Sites to avoid - 72 (everyone's route to the bathroom) 49 (lots of traffic and not very deep). Sites in Gooseberry Glen are generally shaded like the 1-75 sites, but there are not as many bushes to separate sites; that may be preferable if you like playing lawn games or camping with friends. Gooseberry Glen tends to have less traffic.
Guptan Nambudiripad
New campground with nice bathroom facilities. Cellphone connection is poor or non existent. Short hikes and some are little steep.
RocktheSauk
One of our favorite state parks, with excellent hiking, terrific history and great campground and facilities. I highly recommend it even though it is a bit of a road trip from our home in Central MN.
John Dean
Stayed for three nights the weather was great and the park is always worth a visit
Andy McRae
3/21/18. Came to the park for a bit of hiking and fishing. Nice and quiet the way I like it. There is still quite a bit of snow around in the shaded areas. Fishing was sporatic but still fun.
Jonathan Voss
Beautiful area to explore with hiking trails, right in the river for easy access to trout fishing, and an awesome beach for the kids.
Dena Hankerson
Had quite picnics with sweetheart, our jack Russell got to run freely, fresh air, hiking trails...good day
Robin Mickley
So beautiful! Lots of hiking, walking and water. Very neat and clean. We will return
Tom Knowski
Beautiful park located conveniently just 30 minutes east of Rochester. If you're here for bird watching, bring bug spray in the summer because the gnats and mosquitoes get nasty with all of the rainfall. That being said, there is an abundance of local species in the summer, such as Indigo Buntings, Orioles, Phoebes, Catbirds, Goldfinches, Swallows, Woodpeckers, Song Sparrows, Turkey Vultures. I've even seen an Eastern Bluebird once. In the summer, the Prairie explodes with plants and butterflies, along with some of the fattest Garter Snakes I've ever seen. Excited to see what kinds of wildlife the Fall and Winter will bring.
David Young
Probably the best State Park SE MN has to offer. Great trout fishing, camping, and hiking!
Daniel Randolph
Such a picturesque place with lots to do. The hiking is amazing and can be as easy or hard as you want. The scenery is really incredible throughout the park. This area is full of fly fishermen and the background is exactly perfect for it. The campgrounds are really nice with a lot of option.
We went in Nov and the water is off but the electricity is on.
Cassandra Link
Beautiful park! Nice mix of easy and moderate trails, several with stair climbs and the views at the top are worth it. Lots of parking and picnic areas.
mel peifer
The hiking in the area is great, as is the swimming and scenery. The nearby fire tower is a huge climb, but the view is worth it. The nature shop, with the ice cream, is a great way to keep kids happy. The staff is the best at any State Park I've been to in awhile!
Rose Sorenmann
Incredible walking, hiking trails, busy but large enough that it never felt crowded
Elizabeth Pearse
Lots of trails, some of which are steep (and slippery in snow) but lead to spectacular views!
Restrooms, shelter available, as well as a fishing stream.
Rachel Costello
Go here for an Ozark feel in MN. 5 stars because they spray, have a beach and trails are amazing. We were in the older campsite.

This is a place I visited often while I lived near and still a peaceful reprieve I stop in whenever I'm back home! The views from the top of the bluffs are breathtaking and there are both easy and challenging trails that you could hike all day! Amazing little hidden gems throughout your journey and even a little beach, picnic tables, bathrooms, volleyball, places to cook and camp! Wonderful going solo or packing up the family for a day trip! Make sure and see the humongous rock cave 💚 Day pass went up to around $7 but it's completely worth every penny!
Russell Greening
Great place for hiking...lots of trails... and fishing! Leaves were BEAUTIFUL today (10-8-20). Is a small beach that is nice also.
Megan Peterson
Wonderful hiking and views!
Megan Minear
Super clean. Amazing hiking and nicely marked trails.
Calvin Corey
Great place for exploring!
My son had a great first experience this weekend, thank you!
Raye Koehler
You can easily spend hours here. They have campgrounds to stay on. Lots of pretty cliffs. You are in for a nice trek uphill. Enjoy!!
Edith R
Amazing place to connect with NATURE! Moderate trails, picnic tables a perfect place to spend time.
MNtwinsfan4ever
First time visiting this park, I will definitely be back! Great hiking and a nice little swimming beach as well.
Matt Bessingpas
Relaxing place and awesome place to hike views were amazing, highly recommend
Scott Petersen
My second time here and it was really nice, although had a bad storm (again) on the night we stayed over. Few mosquitos as advertised. I'll be back.
Ryan Just
Excellent place to hike. Good elevation. Group camp is great as well
Melissa Mills
My favorite SE MN state park. SO many hiking trails for all levels of hikers.
Gyeoung-Jin Kang
It is a great place to hike. I really enjoyed the green and blue. I think it would be very good to enjoy fall colors.
Chris McNallan
Great camping, hiking, and swimming area. The offices are easy to find in order to get a day or year pass for state parks. As well as purchase camping sites. The beach/swimming area is well taken care of. There are changing rooms and bathrooms with running water on site. Many picnic tables that are spread throughout the park. The hiking trails are great, some crossover the streams and creeks using small bridges. The trails that take you to the top of the bluffs have really good views.
antho lag
Nice park, easy to park on the parking lot.
We did the main hike which is about 2.4 miles this is great because it is through the trees so we benefit from the shade.
The hike goes up for half part then down for the other.
We went to the beach which is small ,good for getting refresh but definitely not for swimming.
Erik Meyers
Beautiful park that is a little smaller. Chimney rock trail is super fun with great views at top
Winsor James
The hiking is amazing! People come here for club evens and just for a day activity.
Chris Sanders
Did the Chimney Rock trail first! It was a bit harder than I assumed but definitely worth all of the views!
Doug Petrie
Love this state park. Lots of beautiful trails through the bluffs and valleys, some are easy and casual, some are a little rigorous.
,,
Absolutely beautiful Park and the lack of mosquitoes was wonderful. We got lucky and there was no one next to our cat on site. I've heard this park can get overly busy but in our trip there it was fairly empty.
Trish LN
Beautiful park, but need a few days there to get in more trails.
Debi Carver
A must see! So impressed by how well the park is maintained!! Love the multiple levels of hiking trails and maps showing you where you are and where you can go along the way. And!! Don't forget to dip your toes in the creek on a hot summer day. Wish I lived closer, I definitely would have a yearly pass! But I will be back and bring my family and friends! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
Veth LaBaw
Whitewater State Park is a gem of a place. It has a nice variety of trails that range from easy to difficult and has spectacular views.
darcy christensen
Beautiful area, lots of hiking trails. Make sure you chose the trail according to your ability some are difficult(very) some are medium and some are easy. Very well kept trails and picnic areas, clean bathrooms, trout fishing, camping in many different grounds, and a spring fed swimming area. Very nice park to visit!
whokenstad
Does anyone know what the big concrete octagon above the parking lot(up on wooded hillside alongside trail) is for?
Wanderlust1
Just when I thought the MN State Parks couldn't get better ... They do. Lots of stairs & VERY rugged trails to Chimney Rock & Inspiration Point but so worth it. The views are breathtaking. Also did Meadow Trail & Trout Run Creek ... Both pretty flat & self guided. Several great picnic areas and a little beach. Great bird watching & fun to see the people trout fishing.
William Cleveland
Big Scout Spring camporee weekend. We all had a great time and campground was opened for us. A place everyone should visit for some outdoor time.
Its.just.k
Great place to be outdoors. Lots of trail options and picnic areas. Beautiful views.
Christopher Walsh
Chimney Rock trail was good, I went up the wooden stair side and came down on the rock stair side. Good times. My dog enjoyed the rocks.
Jesse Huston
Very clean and nicely laid out. People were friendly, facilities were well maintained. Beautiful park and a great beach.
Kyle
Great state park, freindly staff, well marked trails.
Shubhi Agarwal
We went to Inspiration point here..good for walking, light trekking, nature walks, fishing
Ashley Kalenian
Some of the best hiking of the area here. Breathtaking views and good variety of available paths.
Julie and T.J. Schendel
Beautiful! Endless trails to explore. Stunning views.
Judy Martin
The area was breathtaking in its beauty. Hills that looked like mountains, valleys with the crystal clear Whitewater River (looked more like a creek) through the camp. We fished and walked up the river (it was very shallow when we were there.) The kids had a lot of fun riding their bikes around in the park. Lots of paved drives and also lots of dirt trails to hike throughout the park. NO PHONE SERVICE. That was good and bad. The ranger station had wifi.
Scott “Gire” Hendricks
Amazing views away from any signs of civilization, great way to escape for a day or weekend!
Jody Cullen
Not sure why this is such a popular State Park...maybe the lack of mosquitos? But flies and gnats sure took their place of annoyance! Our site was nice and the bathrooms are really nice and clean. We found the maps and the trails to be super confusing and not well marked. We do a lot of hiking in State parks, so I don't think it's user error. We were sad to see how disgusting the swimming beach was. The water was green and gross and the beach was littered with goose poop. Not sure if we will come back to this park, but enjoyed the fireflies when we were there.
Brad Skogheim
This was our second trip here this year! We liked it so much the first time in the spring that we had to come back!
Pete C
We loved this state park. We definitely plan to come back to explore more. My 8 yr old son and I enjoyed the geocache and the beach. The sand was so soft and white and the water was not weedy (although there were hundreds of tadpoles that he thought were fun to catch). We'll be back for sure. Next time we'll try trout fishing and a little more hiking. The lack of mosquitoes makes it a must visit camping destination.
Jason Hawthorne
Facilities are all new for showers and bathroom. Campground roads are also newly paved. Good hiking trails with elevations. Beach is spring fed with white sand. No mosquito's the entire time we were here.
Joe LaJesse
There are multiple outdoor activities that you can do here; from hiking to camping to forraging to trout fishing to bird watching. I was just trying out the new paddle board this trip here.
JN Joan
One of the best parks for camping. The park is well maintained. Hiking was very good. There is a small beach called chimney rock beach. The toilets and bathrooms are well maintained. Will go back again.
Jeff Miller
Beautiful Park with well maintained facilities and trails.
Derlyn Delcarmen
Didn't really get to go walk because of personal issues. But oh my this place is so beautiful. You can walk you can swim. Also picnic area was nice as well highly recommended 👌🏼 …
Mory Jahangir
Wonderful place for hiking and birds.
Great place for spring birding, and hiking along the beautiful River.
Jordan H
Decent hike for the area. Beautiful little river that runs through with a nice built up swimming area. Several species of mushroom can be found throughout the area that are pretty cool to see. Not many mosquitos, but it was very humid under the tree canopy on the trail.
Eric Stary
First time stopping here. Can’t wait to come back in the summer. I only had time for a short hike, the park ranger at the office was more than helpful suggesting some short trails. In the hour or so I spent walking here, I got to see and cross a river, cliffs, lots of beaver activity including a pretty substantial dam. Lots of amenities at the park. When I got here today there were large signs for NO THRU TRAFFIC on the road leading to the park, a friendly gas station attendant, and the park ranger assured me you can drive past the signs into the park and it is open to visitors, but you can’t access certain parts of the park do to work being done. I would very much recommend stopping here.
Pavithra S
Loved the state park! Very well maintained trails and picnic areas. Many trails to explore. We could only go to 2 trails today. There is ample space in the south and north picnic areas to safely maintain distance. The beach was open today as well. The stream can be seen and heard in many places across the park which makes it even more pleasant!
Katey Redman
Great trails. Different hikes to go on. Family friendly. Beautiful park. Cant wait to go back!
Mike Mulvihill
One of my favorites. Many different trails to hike. Can easily spend all day here and personally have a few different times.
Patsy Stuva
Huge park. Lots of facilities including a nature store. Bird watching in the visitor center. Satellite Parks are Carley and John Latsch
Linda Stein
Our fire pit was half full when we got there. The hosts in my opinion should be see once not three times. The area is beautiful ❤️ and the park is well set up for camping.
Jon Burman
Beautiful scenery and great hiking trails. Only reason for 4 stars is our camp site was setup backwards (site43E) for travel trailer, all other sites looked great. Chimney rock trail was fun as was coyote trail, both have great views.
Cameron Hawkings
Beautiful. Nice trails to hike and camping.
Joshua Virtue
Possibly my favorite state park!
Amazing hiking
Patrick Jensen
Swung through to see if they have any dispersed winter campsites, but that was a hard no. Just one small loop of electric sites available out in the open. The park employee was very friendly and helpful though!
Lauren Martichuski
Very nice walking paths and beautiful views.
Tracy Frizzell
The park was beautiful & clean. I would have given it 5 stars if the showers in campground had warmer water & if there was wifi more readily available in the park other than just at the visitor center. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal to me but there is virtually NO cell service in the area (I have verizon).
Chelsea Kaminski
Absolutely beautiful! Trails were so fun and easy to navigate!
caroline wales
Beautiful park with some challenging hiking trails. All of the bathrooms I used were flushing toilets (not pit toilets). The beach has the softest sand with no vegetation in the swimming area.
R K
This is my favorite place in Minnesota so far. Mostly because the water is so clean, secondly because there are so many different trails to hike and there are trees everywhere, thirdly because my first date with the love of my life was there.
S & S Designs
Rented a cabin for the night. The cabin were clean and beautiful. The park have beautiful trail that are suitable for the most experienced hikers.
Mary Bowden
Beautiful views and plenty of trails to hike. Everyone was quiet at there camp sites. Even after a heavy rain the trails were still passable. Slippery in spots, but only muddy in spots. Bring binnoculars and a treking pole is a must. I found chimmney rock difficult not moderate and not for young kids. I spent 2.5 days there . I almost got all the traila in. Didnt get in coyote. Be prepared to do alot of stairs. A lot of bathrooms available. Even nice clean spacious shower rooms. Don't forget to see elbey fire tower 2 miles down the road. I give it 4 stars bc the beach has nasty geese poop on it. They grade it but its still.nasty. see pics
very epic
One of my favorite hiking places. Variety of wild flowers and great views.
Carrie Dechamps
Beautiful area. Nice trails.
Greg
Great State park. Our site was spacious and well kept. Shielded from other sites with trees. We were in site 238E. Beautiful area and great walking trails. For those that must have internet, Be prepared as ZERO Verizon signal. No matter to us as we keep an AT&T hotspot too which had great signal. 3rd time on our travels having a secondary carrier paid off to have internet. I wish all state parks were this nice. 6 Stars
Jack O'Shaughnessy
Amazing amazing amazing. No mosquitos- none. I am frequently eaten alive by bugs, so for me to spend 4 days there and return home without a single bite is nothing short of a miracle. Excellent hiking as well, definitely check out the hike up to inspiration point. Lots of steep steps so definitely be ready for a workout, but the view is worth it and the way back is not nearly as tough. Did not check out the beach as there had been lots of rain the week prior and the water was icky. Fishing was great though, friend caught 6 trouts in 2 days. The showers were just okay, never got hot, just warm. I checked out the brand new showers by the group camp area as well, much nicer single room showers, but same issue with the heat. Campsite 37E was HUGE and perfect for our large party of 6 people and 4 dogs. We easily fit a 6 person tent, a sonic lite camper, and 2 trucks. We will be back!
Rebecca Larsen
The BOW experience was excellent! Our Naturalist was as well knowledgeable, enthusiastic, friendly, and made me feel very welcome and I plan on coming back to such events, and to hike in the park. Thank you!
Kelli Thiel
Great hiking spot not too far from the Twin Cities! The signs on the trails aren't the best though, so if you're not great at reading maps it's easy to end up on a different trail than you intended.
David Stauffer
This is our 2nd year coming here in August. There are several good hikes near the campground, there just doesn't seem to be any mosquitoes and the bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen in a state park. There are a few other activities near by like tubing and horseback riding.
Jennifer Torres
We had lots of fun! Beware of raccoons and other critters... Food best kept in your car or locked camper. Beach has beautiful soft sand but swimming area was disgusting (likely for time of year). Loved the hiking trails and splashing in the river! Going back again soon!
Kienan Mick
Enjoy rigorous bluff hiking and a broad variety of flowers.
Heather Dewhirst
Great place to spend a beautiful day hiking. There are trails for all skill levels and the scenery is stunning. The only reason for 4 stars is that some of the trails and points of interest (like Inspiration Pt) could be better marked. We decided that would be a great project for my Boy Scout to get his Eagle. 🙂 …
jim wood
This is a Minnesota State Park you want to visit. Several things stand out.
Clean facility, including outhouses. If you like to hike outdoors they have several trails to take. Anywhere from intermediate to challenging.
Highly recommend !
Sara Ronning
Wonderful place to Visit. Fantastic staff. Something for everyone! We are going to visit again!
Ron Weisman
We had a great fall camping trip here. Beautiful park, very accessible. Great time of year to camp, not many other people, leaves on the bluffs we so pretty.
Daryl Carlson
Beautiful! Nice camp grounds.
Eric C
Took a wonderful walk to Chimney Rock. Beautiful place!
Kenny Gale
What an amazing place!! We thoroughly enjoyed all the hiking trails and rode our bikes throughout the park. The prices are reasonable, $23 to camp + $5 for vehicle permit daily. A nice dump station and options for water and electric hookups. The beach is nicely kept. We saw turtles, deer and chipmunks. Many of the hikes have nicely kept boardwalks and stairs. In one area stairs nearly as steep as a ladder took us up a cliff face, it was awesome!! Definitely a new favorite!!
Donna Swenson
I live this park! Virtually no mosquitoes and awesome hiking trails and great stream fishing.
Michelle Tradup
Beautiful well kept hiking trails. Family favorite.
Jeri Hough
Great hiking trails. I haven’t been in awhile though…
Adam Henke
One of the best State Parks in MN. And [relatively] no skeeters. Nice hiking with some elevation and no reception. Only downside is that it gets packed on the regular. Highly recommend the walk-in camping.
Julie Herrmann
Hiking on a weekday is the best. It's like having your own private park.
Rachel Fisher
Such a beautiful place and SO MANY trails! We have camped here in the past and it was amazing. We come here all the time to hike and just relax with nature. Absolutely gorgeous!
snowblind320
Clean, lot's of hiking trails, and the programs that where offered were very fun and educational.
Anton Vezikov
Great park, very nice new camping facilities. Camped at the at a group site, which had new showers and bathrooms close by . Lots of hiking trails with beautiful views.
Stephanie Kruse
Whitewater State Park has everything you could ever want and more if you’re looking for a great camping experience you need go no further
Ryan Willette
Whitewater state park is one of the best state parks I've been to. The scenery is so beautiful and the location is convenient for me. All the trails are great and the campgrounds are amazing. I rented one of those sleeper cabins and they are super nice. You're still gonna need a sleeping bag but the cabin is so nice in case it's raining. There's enough room in the cabin to sit and play cards of the weather is bad.
Alicia Milton
Beautiful park, very nice spots, quiet and peaceful. Great bathroom with showers. We will for sure be camping here a lot more. Cell reception isn't good, but that was also nice.
Nobox Guy
Awesome place, huge. Just down the road is the wildlife management area. Great place for wildlife photography. Tons of camping available.
John Robertson
This is my favorite state park. The hiking trails are vigorous. The scenery is unbeatable. No mosquitoes makes it even better.
Denis Yarah
No annoying bugs. Bathroom and water available in plenty. Overall a nice park for family. Hiked up the chimney rock trail. Little bit challenging for kids under 3 or 4 but doable.
Rachel Greve
Our family reunion had a great time tenting at site #2 in the group camp. The site is recently remodeled. There is a picnic shelter with ~6 lg. tables, multiple electric outlets, and overhead lights... great for the rainy periods. The site is surrounded by trees and secluded from the other sites and is a couple hundred feet back from the parking area. Carts are available for hauling gear back. Shower/bathroom facilities also nice, especially the sinks for washing dishes! ...the only negative was that the bathroom stalls were difficult to unlock, especially for kids (but even I had some trouble). The park has lots of nice hiking trails along the bluffs, and we also enjoyed the swimming beach and nature programs offered at the park visitor center.
Carly Austin
Bit by 0 mosquitoes, wore no bug spray. A rare treat in this state.
Ben Lageson
This is a fantastic park. The bluff trails are worth the hike. Great swimming spot too. The river is nice and cool no mosquitoes,.
Madison Brooke
Such a beautiful spot to hike and get outside to enjoy nature.
Jeremy Grabrian
Beautiful park with great trails. We spent most of our time along the Chimney Rock trail and down by the river near the beach. We were able to walk along the sandstone ledges that overlook the river trail. Great park for a family to camp at. The camp staff and rangers are top-notch. We had some problems with our reservation and even though it was Labor Day weekend, they were incredibly helpful. I can't speak highly enough of them. They were excellent! The only downside that I saw was that the drive-in campground we were at didn't have any trees or undergrowth between sites. So, you were camping with your neighbors. The electric sites had a bit more tree line. With smokers next to us that was a bit of an issue. But, gorgeous park. Beach was cold but very clean. River beautiful, you get the idea......
Marcus Scarbrough
Beautiful place love seeing the trout in the river
TIMOTHY M COSTELLO
Terrific fall trout fishing- great Browns and ‘Bows , would like to run into some Brookies as well
John Dietrich
My preferred choice for best state campground in MN. Has hiking, good trout fishing and plenty of other activities to keep you busy if you so desire. If you wish to enjoy the solitude and quiet the campsites provide that with a disconnect from modern world no cell service. If planning a stay book ahead sites fill quickly.
Zak Patterson
Nice little park/camp grounds with some cool trails around to hike .. Picnic tables and fire pits arounf for lunch time ! We enjoyed our day there !
Pat Timmers
Beautiful park, best I've seen of the area. Great variety of hiking trails, easy to hard, busy or remote with a good variety of different types of habitat. Hawks are common, but you may also see eagles.
Brian Johnson
What a beautiful park. Hills, trees, river, great hiking. New restrooms in the campground. Be sure to check out the action at the bird feeders at the visitor center! No mosquitoes, also no cell coverage (T-Mo).
Virginia VanKeulen
Gorgeous hikes. Beautiful place
Andrew Somerville
Good drive up camping infrastructure, and great hiking trails
John Schultz
Nice park, good campsites with hiking trails to overlook the river. Electrical only in the campground.
They have a dump station and a water fill station though.
However if you don't fly fish, activities are limited and nearby towns are very small.
Jen E
I love this park! Hardly any mosquitos. Great, rugged hiking trails, shaded and unshaded camping spots (depending on your preference), scenic views and overlooks. The people at the ranger's station are so friendly and knowledgeable and not pay extra like other state parks I've visited. I've been visiting Whitewater for 30 years and still love it.
Shirley Valentine
No mosquito's! Lots of hiking for all different levels. Loved bird watching in the visitors center. All around great State Park to visit! Stayed in the camper cabins, highly recommend!
Smilinbluheart
The campground was full but we didn't feel crowded. We attended two of the nature programs, banding birds and peregrine falcons. Both were well presented and informative. The hiking trails are well maintained. We had a great time
Brandon Holland
One of my favorite Minnesota state parks, very iconic, with great trails and great camping.
Ann Velazquez
Great park , wonderful campsites, clean clean shower houses!! In my top three state parks! We stayed for our mother son trip planned on staying 5 days had to leave after two because of in coming weather. I will keep going back though. We hiked for 7 hours and I still wanted to see more ! Only thing that I wasnt a fan of is the raccoons that show up to the party after sun goes down. I was startled a couple times and may have scared my neighbors.
Megan Roberts
Sept 4, 2020. Enjoyed a day at the park while on an anniversary trip in our camper van. Weather was perfect, hiking was great. Beautiful place. Hardly any bugs! I recommend a visit!
Inta Buhr
Amazing hiking. Tons of trails in varying degrees of difficulty. Beautiful and diverse scenery. Stunning (or terrifying if you are afraid of heights like I am) views.
We tent camped in one of the walk-in sites for about 5 days in 2013. It was flood season so the site was really wet and muddy the whole time but we still had a blast hiking. Mosquitoes were not too bad but you will definitely want to bring some spray.
Dorian Warner
This might be my new favorite park! Beautiful and breathtaking, the hiking is challenging with all the climbing but it is so worth it when you get to the tops of the bluffs and just take in the amazing wilderness that surrounds you. We hiked the Dakota trail and I would love to go back and hike it again. It’s not the longest trail at I believe a little over 4 miles but it dose have its challenges. In that 4 miles out fitness tracker said we climbed 570 feet and wow could we feel it in our legs. The staff and rangers were kind and most informative. We were congratulated on our 25th park and earned a free night camping with our passport club. My wife and I give it four thumbs and eight paws up 🐾
Hannah Fischer
Camped mid June on the new side across the freeway from the office. The shower facilities were great, but a bit of a walk from our campsite. Also our site did not have large trees so we were in the sun most of the time which got warm. Loved the park and the trails though. We also took advantage of the small beach area to cool off. No mosquito's, which is fantastic but our dogs were swarmed by nats the whole weekend. Great hiking and views!
Alex Hatzenbuhler
Whitewater State Park is absolutely stunning. There are miles and miles of trails. Everything is well maintained and landscape is beautiful. The bluffs offer a great view of the entire area. Some places have small caves that you can crawl through. Definitely spend a few hours exploring.
Erin Engstrom
Beautiful park, well maintained trails, friendly staff. Would love to go back to this campground! Awesome views from the hiking trails!
Elizabeth Sorenson
It is a very beautiful place to hike! They have some good trails to go for a walk and even take your dog with!
Greg Krueger
Whitewater’s two main campgrounds have completely new restrooms and infrastructure. The park has made major investments expanding and improving camping amenities over the past several years. A good number of campsites are kept open year-round, though the winter site inventory lacks non-electric sites.
Substantial hiking trail systems and swimmable water are each fairly hard to come by in southern Minnesota; Whitewater offers both in one place.
Gail Hildebrant
Great place to unwind. Park is well tended.
Michael Behm
Breathtaking nature and walking trails. Fantastic camper cabins.
Morey Bandel
One of the most beautiful Minnesota state parks...
Trevor Lee
Stayed in the group center in their cabins during the winter. Well maintained, flushing toilets, showers and heated cabins. The mattresses aren't the softest but it definitely beats camping on the ground outside. Full kitchen for a large group to use and if you are adventurous there are spots to hike around. Overall pretty chill. You are stuck in a valley however and almost no cell phone signal, which can be a benefit to some.
Overall very pleasant
Robert Flanagan
Most people do not have a state park passes. Some reason that's okay.
Nice new camp grounds. Well cared for trails and water access. Wildlife mostly waterfowl in the wildlife management area.
Noohum Braveheart
Whitewater State Park is a beautiful location to go with your family, or hiking on your own. The various trails offer paths for a leisure walk, paths that have incredible views, and options that'll break a sweat. The one day car permits were reasonable and easy to get. Staff were available and helpful.
Mik Sz
Great scenery, good hiking trails some with challenges, and a cool water swimming area..last time here i hiked 11miles..look forward to camping here
Haley Eustice
Love going to Whitewater! Camping at the group camp is a lot of fun and can accommodate the large group we bring every year. The large bathrooms, kitchen, fire site, and cabins are nice and still leaves plenty of room to play ball or night games.
Only complaint is there are many trails that go around the group campsite that are not marked well, so we end up with many people walking through the campsite. They see the bathrooms and want to stop to use them, but the people renting the campsite are in charge of supplying everything. We also have all of our shower and bathroom stuff in there, so having people walk through is sometimes obnoxious. We also get a LOT of fishers walking through because it's right next to the river. There are signs that state it is a group camp and permits are required.
Otherwise, we love to go to Whitewater. We love going to the beach and playing sand volleyball as well as swimming. We also like going to LazyD's to float down the river. There is plenty of hiking, few bugs, a nice coffee shop in St. Charles (Cabin Coffee), and Mauers in Elba to catch the score of the Twins game and get something fun to eat and drink.
John Rowekamp
Great hiking trails many include sections of wood steps. Great views of bluffland. Family friendly park.
Ana Lucia Mesta
Incredible hiking trails, options for all hikers from incredibly hard to easy for little ones
Joel Abrahamson
A little spot with lots of great views, thanks to the tall bluffs over the Whitewater River.
Sarah Staats
Beautiful park. Lots of hiking.. naturally low bug counts due to moving water.
Sherah Dahl
Big beach with clear (cold) spring water, gorgeous hikes in the woods.Lovely camping on a babbling creek with nary a mosquito in sight - that's one of the BIGGEST draws to this area. Most MN camping the little critters will eat you alive! I hear it's because the bats in the limestone cliffs eat them. Well, fine with me, they only come out at night! Climb the fire tower nearby and check out the whole area from way up!
R Crepps
Very nice park. We didn't use bug spray one time it was so nice.. but be prepared to have no cell service in the valley.. We will be back great hikes. Even my five year old love the hiking club hike even with it be difficult.
Jeremy Girgen
I've been coming here for years. Lots to do here. You can hike you can fish you can camp there's a museum. Reviews are really good from bluff's to rivers running through it. The fishing here is pretty good I recommend catching and releasing to insure a positive population;-) swing on through you won't regret it.
Ronald Doran
Incredible hiking, fishing and geocaching!
José Alberto Villagomez Mendez
Peaceful and loving place to forgot about things.
Connect yourself with the nature.
Doun Mongkone
Modern group camp site with cabins were amazing. All staff were very nice. Definitely going to reserve for 2020. We were too late to reserve for 2019. This place gets booked quick. Make your reservations the day of but a year in advance.
Casey Raehtz
We were a little confused when we got there at 6:20 PM and the office was already closed but they had our last name written on the door as being registered and we went right to our campsite. Very clean site and the showers were immaculate.
Nick Preese
I'm so impressed with this place. It's an unexpected gem. Amazing trails, views, and fishing.
The beach is great. Campgrounds are fantastic. Park rangers are super helpful.
Highly recommend!!!👍
Stacey Law
I always look forward to coming here every year. It's has large sites and trails and a large overflow/day parking lot. All they ask is to NOT park on the grass. The trout fishing is a hit and miss. They're adding a huge new section across the road and what looks like a really nice bath house that should be open July/August.
Tate Fontenot
Trails need some work (even with winter) lots of narrow wash-outs
Marcel Nienhuis
Good spot for camping, hiking and trout fishing. No mosquitoes somehow! Electricity for camp sites, flushing toilets and showers. We will be back. There is a great spot for swimming with the kids too.
Andrew Maselli
Spectacular views, forgot the leash for my dog and one of the site staffers let me borrow their leash
Steve Wiemer
Numerous hiking trails of variable difficulty. Inspiration Point and Chimney Rock are awesome. Great fishing, swimming, and picnic opportunities too. Tons of fun!
John Kroeger
Loved this state park, good fishing stream and stunning vistas from the bluffs. Loved hiking the trails. A great place to get away from it all back to nature. I have been to several Minnesota State parks and this is one of my favorites.
Eric Pleiss
A hidden gem of a state park. Wonderful trails up and down the river bluffs. Top 5 parks in the state. Great fishing and hiking. Camping is good with nice sites and facilities. Lots of programs at welcome center.
Alicia DeHaan
Great place to hike or wade in the beautiful and clear, though very cold, river. Nice picnicking area with bathrooms. Generally, the area is very scenic, and my family and I enjoyed our time there.
Z Makila
There are no mosquitos in this state park, and I'm not sure why, but I'm certainly okay with it. The group lodging space is wonderful, we love to rent it out as a big group of extended family friends and all bring food and disconnect from the world. Take some hikes, play some board games, read some books. It's a wonderful thing to do, and can even be done in the winter, which I think is much more fun!
Lisa Murphy
We went tent camping and it was... rather warm. We spent a lot of time at the beach- went on a hike, did the park's geocaching challenge and climbed the local town of Elba's fire tower. Our site had electricity (thank goodness for the box fan) and the bathrooms/shower buildings worked, were clean and easy to get to. Great experience. Learn about wild parsnips before you go... It's a plant that causes blisters/reactions and was easy to find/identify after we learned what it looked like. Very few mosquitos... Just gnats 🙂

Thank you - it was the perfect location for our reunion. We used the group center with the 6 group cabins. The main center has a great kitchen.
The dining hall was rustic. Perfect place to relax and enjoy friends.
The fire pit was nice to so around.
Donald Perry
Great place to "get away from it all"! Lots of things to do and see, especially if you're into hiking or fitness. Whitewater has long and short paths ( to hike on ), a small man-made lake with a beach, places to camp, and places have birthdays. C'mon down and enjoy the scenery!
Arthur Williams
Was a fun place to meet our friends. The staff did a really nice job of keeping visitors informed about what trails are open due to flooding, etc.
They also offer excellent classes for the littles.
If you live in SE MN, or traveling through the area, I highly recommend stopping by!
Anthony Taylor
Only place around with enough trail to make it worth the drive. Best camping spots are along the river. It's nice to see trees once in awhile, lots of farmland in southern MN.
Adam Borgstahl
Great park. Lots of great views, good trout waters (make sure you have a trout stamp), Lots and lots of hiking trails. Entertained my kids for an entire day!
Banle Gaar
Staff are great and will answer any question you might have. There is no more primitive campsite I found out, so the best closest version you can get is the cart in section (which there are only four of). From what I could tell, Cart in #1 is close and has a comfy spot location, Cart in #2 has a spot within view of the river/bridge, cart in #3 is a bit more open but because of that openness it has a nice view of the hill and forest around you. I don't know #4 because to walk back there and view it would be creeper status.
Rose Shrader
Beautiful park with lots of space for camping. Interesting and beautiful hiking trails and a nice swimming area too. We really enjoyed the hike up to chimney rock!
TheAlyssaAnn89
One of the rangers (wish I knew the name) was very rude to us during our stay. He counted my friends 2 year old as a full person which he said made us over our 6 person limit.
Also the TP and soap were always out.
The river was BEAUTIFUL. Perfect for trout fishing and we spent most of our time here :)
Natalie Shrestha
Best park in Minnesota. Trails are not for novices. Bring more water than you planned. There are trails that are somewhat accessible. Fantastic. Can't wait to go back
James Bernier
Did 6.2 miles of hiking and a wonderful day in this park.
Eric Thomas
Great park. Best state park in southern Minnesota. Lots of hiking opportunities from flat to switchbacks and everything in between. Fishing for trout. Just a beautiful park and area.
Jared Cooper
Some of the best bathrooms and showers we've seen! Beautiful scenery, abundant shade, charming camp store. Highly recommended!
Thaddeus Burget
Dakota trail is a beaut! Be prepared for a hike though. Chimney rock is a quickish hike that has some scenic views. Fishing is wonderful but need a trout stamp.
Alec Larsen
Great hiking trails for all levels of difficultly. Awesome campground as well, though some of the electric sites have less shade and tree cover.
Jon Perkins
Great trails, clean facilities, friendly staff
Bizzo J
One of my favorite State Parks in MN! Loads of trails to hike, and TONS of land too. Trout fishing here is great, with mainly Brown's and Rainbows, with the rare brookie mixed in. Lots of camping spots, with clean facilities too. The WMA has a LOT of land to hunt as well. Check this place out!
Matthew cloutier
Great hiking trails for all people. Gnats were pretty bad for the weekend that we were there but heard that it was just the worst 2 weeks of the year. Hardly any mosquitos! Crowded beach. Great views on Dakota trail. Firewood and ice for sale at Visitors Center.
Kevin Westphal
Camped here 3 nights. Would have given 5 stars but...the fire pits suck! They’re like 2 ft tall! You can’t even see the fire.
Lyndsey Ebben
Great state park with plenty of hiking trails. We stayed in the new campground and the walk in sites weren't much of a walk in. They will be nicer once the new trees and shrubs grow up.
Jennifer Vaujin
Love it. Beautiful, serene, and plenty of trails for varying levels of difficulty.
Mahdi Abdulnabi
Awesome park with a lot thing's to do here
Amanda Engelhart
This park has miles of gorgeous hiking trails, little water falls, creeks, camping, parks!!! I go here all the time and never fail to find something new every time! Great for being alone or brining your whole family! Places to grill out as well!
Michelle
One of my favorite places to take my kids camping. The bathrooms are clean and so are the camp sites. The trails are well maintained.
David Allison
Great place to explore, and spend a few days camping. I paid after hours for a new annual State Park Pass, and instead of mailing the pass to me, a friendly Park Ranger hand delivered it to my campsite.
Karl Sinclair
I've been going here since I was kid and it's always beautiful and clean. One of my favorite state parks in Minnesota!
Dawn Alitz
Great hiking with a couple of excellent outlooks. Amazing amount of biodiversity and opportunities to see a variety of birds. Campsites are clean and well-maintained.
Sheric
Two words. Black gnats. If you go, buy bug soother - a lemongrass repellant that smells like vanilla. It’s the only thing that keeps them away. The campsite was spacious but the bathhouses were neglected. Bugs, cobwebs, nests, dirt, mold, slimy floors, vents clogged with thick dust. They need a good bleach and power washing. We hiked all the trails - awesome!
RJ Whyte
What an amazing place to visit! Lots of hiking and awesome things to see .
Jesse James
Really nice park with lots of hiking trails and no mosquitoes! Fun for beginners and plenty of trails for someone that likes getting some miles in.
Alexander Gill
Great state park with excellent trails that have a wide range of difficulty. Camp sites are clean and have modern amenities (electric sites, showers, bathrooms with running water). A real jewel of a state park in Eastern Minnesota!
Holli Courteau

Beautiful park with nice trails and great scenery. Can't wait to explore in the summer when we can get in the water
Andy Cosgrove
My kids love coming here in the fall. It's become almost an annual tradition to camp here. Some of the best hiking you'll find in this area. The Elba Fire Tower is also a must-see.
David Gunawan
Definitely one of the best state park in Minnesota and one of our favorite. There are just so much to enjoy and explore. We keep coming back here several times in a year
Brian Steffen
beautiful campground with great hiking. lots of delicious trout.
Steve Kummer
I was involved in the design and construction of the new Minneiska Campground. May be a little biased, but it turned out beautiful, and there were a lot of happy faces there. This park will become top notch in the system. The Whitewater River, the Park's namesake, still looks like a hellhole from Parks and Trails latest failure at protecting its infrastructure. It's too bad that some DNR managers make terrible and stubborn choices about how to preserve this gem without open collaboration and input. The park, though, is a great place to day hike and camp, regardless of the management, and I highly recommend th is place.
Stephanie
Nice hiking trails
Lisa Brainard
Beautiful hills, rocky bluffs, great trout stream, and nice -- if sometimes strenuous -- hiking trails that often lead to very scenic overlooks. Year-round interpretive programming.
Alexandra Danielson
I love the trails in this state park, because of the high levations to large bluff views. After a hour long hike or longer you can stop and break in the picnic area.
Justin Carlson
Awesome views and great trails for people who want an easy stroll along the river or a hike up the bluff. Lots of different sceneries including the bluff views, whitewater river, prairie, and forest. Also has a popular beach.
iron cage
It was awesome. This is a great place for tourists or people around the area to have a get together. Theirs a really cool trail that takes you through the forest and mountain tops
Jerry Kohn
We went on the evening walk with the naturalist as she called in owls. She did a great job, and we enjoyed the evening.
Lyle Radloff
Loved this place. Excellent shower facilities
Nee Y
Nice camping site! Minimal mosquitoes, I'm very Surpised! Lots of gnats though. Very clean bathrooms and was in close walking distance from camp site. Great trails and swimming area.
Richard Beckley

Whitewater State Park is one of our favorite places! Its 30 minutes from downtown Rochester. We come for appts @ Mayo Clinic and its the best part of the day when we return to the park!! The staff is extremely helpful and pleasant. I recommend Whitewater State Park to anyone seeking a great experience!
Raychel Ptacek
Love Whitewater hiking and a great little beach, what more do you need!
Julene Johnson
Camper Cabins are well maintained and very reasonably priced.
Great hiking.
The best was the naturalist Jeremy who taught my mom and I all about geocaching and was very patient with us learning how to use the gps systems and answering all of our questions. We also learned a lot in the ⭐️ stars and planets class. Thanks Jeremy I can now always find the Big Dipper and have gone on to solve many caches both at state parks and in my neighborhood!
Sue Rypka
Wonderful flowers and signs of beaver, gentle shady walking paths if you don't want to climb the hills, beautiful clear trout stream, chokecherry trees in bloom!
Lori Patrice
Absolutely beautiful. Group camping here with clean bathrooms and accessable yet remote campsites was just splendid this summer!
Mike Lehman

Breanna Marquardt
This place is beautiful 🏞️ …
Allison Klassen
Very nice park, the daily programs were great fun to go and learn about nature and are very kid friendly. Hiking if you are afraid of heights can be a little scary, but scenery up there is worth going up.
Debra Roemhildt
So happy we could hike here, so many beautiful state parks we have been able to enjoy this year!!!!! Clean and neat
David Babish
Camped with family in the late Fall, and again in the late Spring - woke to nothing less than a nonchalant eagle high in his tree surveying a clear, shallow brook meandering between low foothills. Reminded me of Vermont. Simple campsites, each with a picnic table and firepit. Swimming area is a great but pretty far from northern campsite. Kids liked the nature center at park entrance.
As mentioned by others, low cell phone coverage even a few miles out. GPS will kick out early on you :) Gets dark abruptly because the hills block the setting sun, and rail squalls can surprise you as they cross the ridge. Town of St. Anthony just a few miles away to get ice. Attended Mass at St. Charles Borromeo.
Natalie Jo Baker
Favorite hiking area near Rochester mn
Lori
Paved roads great for riding bikes. New clean bathrooms. Lots of trails for hiking. Clean swimming beach lots of sand. Large campsite level ground.
Anna Kuehn
A great day with my husband and kids! We did the Hiking Club hike and it kicked our butts but it was a great afternoon activity!
Eric Morken
Absolutely the most gorgeous Park in this part of the state so many different walking trails and different types you can if you're an avid hiker to stop there for you if you're mediocre just Meander of sorts if there's Trails for everybody and there's camping lots of camping and I heard some great party sounds in the distance as I was hiking in the Hills I heard a party it was Mexican music and they were having a blast it was fun to watch the beach was full of people it was nice clean fun no swearing no bums laying around just as all family-oriented nice stuff and the Great Park Rangers are very patient people I appreciate it very much thank you guys for putting up with us coming out and stomping all over your nature thank you.
Kandace Schierts
Great, gorgeous vacation spot for the family, WiFi available in front office, other than that NO CELL SERVICE unless you hike to top of bluff.
Perfect bonding experience if you have a teen attached to their electronics muh ha ha ha!
Brandon
Tons of hiking, fire tower, trout streams, private camp sites, what more could you ask for? As you're driving to the park, you would never think it was going to be this beautiful lush green forest as you're passing through all the corn fields. No cell service.
Ellery J
I like just about every state park. If you go here for the Discovery Trail. It is a mini Angels Landing.
Beth Larrabee
Posh camping. Our camp had clean toilets and sinks with running water on site. The trials and small beach area were a lot of fun. Great experience.
Tom Oftedahl
Love the hikes here. Saw an awesome presentation on owls. Our nature guide had to be part owl cause her calls sounded just like a real one.

Lovely Park but your trails need better signage. A simple arrow at a fork to indicate the main route would be hugely helpful.
