Fantastic place to visit! This is a must visit if you are anywhere near Itasca. The visitor center is nice and well kept. A short drive from the visitor is the headwaters of the Mississippi River. It's awesome to be able to walk across knowing how big this river is.

So much to do and see here! This park is great for hiking, but it is also easy to drive around and park at all the different attractions. Itasca Sports has all you recreation needs: cycling, e-bikes, canoes, kayaks, and pontoons!
The fire tower gives incredible views. The Mississippi River headwaters are very cool to walk over and in the water.

Highly recommend visiting Itasca State Park and staying overnight at least once in the campground. There are black bears present in the area so follow the rules with putting food away. Flush and pit toilets available throughout the campground as it is huge. It is hard to get a spot on the weekend so plan ahead. You will never get bored as the park has boat ramps at lakes, a swimming beach on Lake Itasca, canoe and bike rentals, a scenic drive, an observatory deck, hiking trails, and camping.

If you have not visited this park, do not sleep on it! Such a beautiful park with lots of trails (both walking and biking).
We covered a lot of ground by using their bike trails to get to certain hiking trail heads we were particularly interested in. The scenery in the fall was spectacular. Do not skip the old watch tower, the views from the top are spectacular!

Loved Itasca State Park! We brought our ebikes and biked about 15 miles of the park. We did some hiking, and some driving around the park, and still didn't make it all the way through. This park is huge. My favorite highlights of the park - the view from the old fire watchtower, swans feeding in one of the small lakes, all the colors (early October), and of course, walking across the Mississippi River Headwaters. We only spent one day at the park and we could have easily spent a week. Recommend staying at Big Timbers (Lake Itasca) just outside the north entrance of the park. The rooms there were stunning with a cabin feel.

Well marked, clean restrooms, plenty to do. Staff was very helpful. Crossing the headwaters of the Mississippi River was on beautiful, well maintained paths but rocks are slippery and it can get crowded. A restaurant and a cafe are available. Really enjoyed this park for the $7 entry fee.

Itasca is a great Minnesota State Park. It's the home of the Mississippi Headwaters and also offers miles and miles of hiking trails. It also features a fire tower that provides panoramic views of the park. You can even see Canada on a clear day. Our family loved our time up there and would love to take another trip back.
Casey Widness
Beautiful park with tons of trails and opportunities to explore the park. We took a dip in the lake, rode bikes and visited the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River. We also stopped by the gift shop and bought some delicious fudge!
We stayed in one of the campgrounds and ended up right next to the playground. It was a great place for all the kids to hangout in the evenings while we got dinner ready.
Great trip for the whole family. We visit every few years and always find something new to explore!

One of the best trips of the summer was a last minute trip to Itasca State Park! The park was clean, pristine and a delightful break from the normal everyday hum drum. Make sure you check out the fire tower, the views are worth the bagillion steps up!
Palm Bay Mom
So much to do and see! Lovely beaches, gifts shops, trails, driving opportunities, and the visitor center was very fun and educational! Visiting from Florida and we loved it! Can’t wait to come back again soon!
Kimberly Fournier
Views were amazing. We had bikes rented, so we could enjoy the gorgeous scenery but get to places much quicker then walking. We still walked a lot once we got there.
Darla Wells
Loved this park. We camped in our Class C motorhome. It was cold and rainy and muddy and had snowed 5 inches before we arrived, but we thoroughly enjoyed our experience anyway. Will come back when warmer to wade across the Mississippi!
Karene Barker
Very wonderful park and great camping experience. Long paved bike trails all over the park that can also be used for strolling like we did. We visited every single point of interest in the park and enjoyed our 5 days very much. Douglas Lodge was a pleasant dining experience. Great Walleye sandwiches! The riverboat tour, headwaters of the Mississippi, both visitor centers in the park are informative and beautiful, Preachers Grove, Peace Pipe Vista and several more things to see. The campground is nicely laid out and the shower house is excellent. We would certainly stay again.

Incredible camping experience; lots of things to do and explore! Gorgeous location and the facilities are nice and clean. Would definitely recommend and hope to come back sometime!

So many things to see and do here! I only had a single day so I went to the Aiton Heights Fire Tower (my favorite part), stopped at a few of the lookout points along the main road, and also went to the Mississippi River Headwaters which also had a gift shop in the same parking lot. But there was so much more to see and do like boating/kayaking, fishing, biking trails, so many hiking trails, campsites and a lodge and I would definitely recommend trying to stay for more than one day if you want to see everything this park has to offer! You do have to purchase a permit to explore the park which are available at the visitors center, they have day passes and annual passes. I bought an annual pass for $35 because I will definitely be going back!

Nice state park. First and oldest in the state. Lots of good trails and a very nice drive available as well around the park that is one way at times. Limited parking at most trail heads.
Mainhia Yang
Beautiful drive through the State Parks, with endless activities to do!
Recommend to spend a few days here to get to all the activities; hiking, swimming, Platoon, paddle board, paddle boat, sight seeing, etc.
Tim
Excellent state park for camping and day visits. Camp sites aren't crowded and good facilities for showering and the like. Excellent wildlife viewing in morning and evening. Lots of good hiking/biking trails for every skill level.
Brandy Kerwood
If your in the area or live in Minnesota... Stop by here.. This is the coolest place plus it has the Mississippi Headwaters.. that is amazing too see... Especially when you live about 800 miles south on the Mississippi... definitely cool.
They have a informational and educational/gift shop center... We spent awhile in there.. We didn't buy a year long pass so it was $7 a day per vehicle which is very reasonable.. When you go give yourself plenty of time to look at everything in the Park... It's beautiful... There is also bicycle rentals, boat rentals.. plenty of trails for hiking, bike riding. Also have cabins, places for tent camping etc .. plus a few place to grab a bit if need be... Plenty of entrances open in the warm month.. only the main one in winter months. I highly recommend going here.

Fantastic place to visit! Do the whole loop especially in the fall. Beautiful trees. Plenty of places to stop and hike. Great place to see the origin of the Mississippi River and walk across on the rocks or a 4×4 short bridge. One of the few places you can cross the river by jumping! Lake Itasca is very pretty and clear. Around the lake on the drive one can see the very all stream that enters the lake and is presumably the origin of the mighty river. Here you cab step across.
Bunker
One of my top 3 state parks in Minnesota. It is huge and there are endless things to do there. It is the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi, worlds 3rd longest river and longest in continental ISA! We love going there and I stop by every time I am i. The area😁 …
Carrie Wilmot
This is the MN State flagship park. So much to do here. Had the Mississippi headwaters to ourselves at 6am and then enjoyed the schoolcraft trail.
James Thill
Had a great day at Itasca State Park today.
Weather was perfect for the afternoon. Not very many people. We walked across the beginning of the Mississippi River.
gary richardson
This place is amazing, it is so huge ¡so many fun activities for families. Make sure you bring your walking shoes. Would definitely recommend!
Bisho Lawaju
It took around two hours to reach there from Fargo, Nd. Different gates to enter the park, but East gate was convenient as there was a counter and assistants for helping the visitors for entrance fees and other information. Driving alone was joyful but stopping at different stops and hime for short would add more fun. Reached to Mississippi headwater, visited the museum, hiked to the Sawmill and had a lots of fun. Driving the oneway road watching fall color was the best part of the trip. But, missed the Aiton Heights Observatory Tower this time. So, plan before heading😁😁😁
Drew Weltin
Every year we venture north to Itasca and leave feeling refreshed and in love with the beauty of this park. There are so many walking, biking, and driving trails that are worth every bit of your attention. The fire tower is worth the 1/2 mile hike from parking.
Rijoa Garcia
This trip was amazing! This is definitely a place for family to visit and get together ❤ we had a wonderful time learning about Itasca and its history!
Will
This park is a classic and feels like it. Gorgeous grounds, smooth paved trails, and lots to do.
We spent three days and two nights with our kids and could have easily spent a whole week.
Ice cream, beaches, headwaters, biking, boating, and much more.
The headwaters were packed at 3pm and completely deserted at 7pm.
Don Johnson
Nature at its best. Plenty of well-fed mosquitoes too. The visitor center has interesting exhibits, but many of the interactive ones didn't work (animal sounds, videos).
Courtney Ledet
So much history to be shared within this park! I learned so much & seen spectacular sites! Make the stop! You can rent bikes, canoes, or kayaks. Plenty of walking/hiking trails.
Becky Iverson
This is my favorite place to be. The park staff are so friendly. The park is clean, the gift shops are fun. Itasca is an amazing place for family’s, couples, or being alone with nature. I’ll be back in 2022 for my 4th year in a row. ❤️
Hiker Gal
A beautiful place to camp, hike, enjoy the headwaters of the Mississippi River... Get outside! It's beautiful here.
Lisa Y
Spent several hours walking trails.. 10 mile wilderness drive.. fire tower. Leaves beautiful, weather cool and windy. 2 almost 60 hikers from Miami Florida loved it.
Chris Ross
Largest State Park in Minnesota. We were there on the weekend early November (which is at the very end of the season). Really the only place open is the Headquarters Visitor Center (where you can buy a pass for your car). However we had an awesome 2 days hiking and getting great pics at the Headwaters area. Both days we had that area to ourselves.
Be aware hunting is allowed in the park early November so you may want to time your visit just before hunting begins.
You may want to stay in a Hotel in either Bemidji or Park Rapids as most of the in park cabins are closed or booked for the weekends.
Becky Boyle Jones
The headwaters of the Mississippi are always worth experiencing. The park has a variety of options for all fitness levels and it is beautiful any time of year
Monroe Wegener
It was an amazing camping trip for us! We had a very relaxing weekend there. The pine ridge campground is very nice , private and lots space. Has toilet and shower room around. Close to Mississippi headwaters, bike rentals and boat rentals. Gift shop and Cafe there are very good price too. Explore trails , you won't regret going there ...
priscilla davanzo
beautiful winter landscape, great hiking and the beautiful lake itasca with the headwaters of mississippi river. highly recommended.
Mary Buzan
Go. Even if it's to take the short walk to the headwaters and do do a drive thru the park. Headwaters are a great photo opp ;) and pretty incredible to admire when you pause to think about it. I would love to go back and take advantage of the hiking trails.
jakeislate
Tons to do for everyone in one of the best State parks in Minnesota. Wilderness Drives, hiking, biking and kayaking. Campgrounds are insanely packed during holiday weekends.
Blackfox 288
With a easy hike to the backpack sites I was quickly able to set up camp and enjoy a nice sunset pn the lake with dinner. Visiting the headwaters early the next morning I enjoyed the solitude.
Wyatt W. Penke
One of, if not the best all around state parks in Minnesota. It has history and great scenery including some majestic trees. The park truly has something for everyone of all ages. Great hiking, biking, fishing, and water sports. It has a nice day use/ swim area and an excellent wilderness drive and one of the best visitor centers in the state. Numerous options for your stay from tenting, to cabins, up to hotels. This park is great for staying or for a single day visit. Park Rapids area has tons to do for the outdoors person.
Ganesh B
A good place to drive around, but unfortunately we didn’t see any wildlife during our drive around the entire lake.
Joey
Great park! Definitely one of the busier state parks. It's accessible and easy to get to. Just under 4 hours from the Twin Cities. There is a big campground (Pine Ridge) but book early! Recommend the Fire Tower and Headwaters as easy hikes/touristy things to see. The gift shop is very large and has lots of history and fun gifts. I would recommend Itasca to everyone of all ages!
Chris Hoeflich
We come out here every year to walk across the Mississippi. We started when my son was young and even at 20 years old, he still enjoys it.
The trails are nice and there is so much to do.
Definitely climb upto the top of the lookout tower for some great views of the area.
Robert Sauser
Restrooms/shower buildings cleaned daily. Camping site sizes vary. Grounds are well kept. Quiet time starts at 10pm but it was quiet way before then. Nice bike trails, not very long but paved and smooth. Circumnavigation lake Itasca by bicycle is worth the trip.
Holly D. H.
Wonderful hiking, camping, and places to relax. One of my favorite state parks!
Julie H
Wonderful family vacation spot! Be sure to take a boat ride and visit the stops and museums along the way. Beautiful state to visit!
Amy Bowles
As always a great trip! Worth the stop for a day, weekend, or several days. Plenty to do!!
Allie Mace
Its was so awesome and had so much with my family. The food at the Cafe was good and the gift shop had alot of cute stuff. There was alot of trailers and a place to swim.
Jesse Jarmuzek
I live 6 miles away, so I get to see nature's beauty often
Lisa Delaloye
This is where you truly want to go for the iconic photo and nationally recognized marker of the Mississippi headwaters!! Growing up in the St. Louis Missouri area this is literally the cleanest I’ve ever seen the Mississippi River 😅🤣 …
Scotty Dog
Everyone needs to visit or State Parks and learn to appreciate all the beauty of nature and leave the games and video games at home and have the kids enjoy the real things in life instead of make believe.
And drive very slow if you want to see nature and wildlife. We drove at 10 MPH instead of 30 and actually got to see a beautiful Black bear sitting by a stump eating just 30 feet into the forest. Also seen white tail deer by looking into the woods and driving slowly. Special Thanks to our Park Rangers and staff that keep our parks safe and open for everyone to enjoy.
So leave the city behind and head to a state park and enjoy everything God has created.

I grew up in St Paul, and adore Minnesota, but had never made it up here until late on Labor Day. The park was full of people still, we stayed two nights overnight in a tent, and we barely got to see half of what we wanted to see. I was a little surprised how much some of the activities and rental possibilities seem to just "disappear" on Labor Day, when the rest of the Park is still fairly busy and there is still so much to do! But that was about the only thing that was even a little disappointing here.
Edited to add: I forgot to mention that our campsite in Pine Ridge was amazing! Huge, good smooth ground for our large tent, and even though it poured and stormed our first night, we didn't get any water in our tent from bad drainage around the tent pad either. It was perfect. The showers are great, restrooms clean, and there are even a few pit toilets around if you don't want to walk "all the way" to the main bathhouse(s).
There are many trails, the source of the Mississippi - of course! - and also smaller lakes and streams abound. However, there are also many informative signs about the geology and history of the area, good driving roads for a drive around the park, many turn off areas like Preacher's Grove that have their own trails and sights, and the Gibbs Visitor Center. Sometimes, visitor centers are "just okay" and have a little gift shop. This is not that visitor center! Mary Gibbs Visitor Center is architecturally wonderful, and has may displays and activities: history of why it's called that and who she was, geological formation and history of the area, many displays about the history and current state and uses for the Mississippi, displays that appeal more to children and young families, information on birds and mammals in the area, and so much more. I even saw a Pileated Woodpecker close up for the first time; it was probably really young, as it just sat there pecking away for grubs and bugs in the dirt right next to our car, while we ooh-ed and ahh-ed at it for ten minutes! Itasca State park is remote, but that's part of why it's so amazing. It is a long drive for us from SE Minnesota, but we will be coming back!
Fargo Tourist
Gorgeous State Park. Highly recommend to the outdoors lover. The only criticism I have is the hiking trails could be marked a bit better. I do a lot of hiking in ND and MN state parks. ND does a much better job of letting one know where one is while MN does a better job at making their trails accessible to all.
hunterthelloyd
Lots of fun for the whole family and way more than just the mississipp headwaters. There are a lot of fun remote trails to explore and even camp.
Welo Tran
One of the best state park for color leaf change finder in MN 👍

This was our first trip here and we had a great time! So many things to do, it would pay to spend at least a few days here. The on-site food at the Douglas Lodge and the ice cream at the Mary Gibbs cafe was delicious and fresh. Friendly and helpful staff, and not too busy with hoards of crowds either. You could spend your whole day hiking, biking, swimming or boating. The red and white pines are beautiful and the park stresses the importance of conservation. I walked away with a deep appreciation for the forest and really what’s left of it.
Billy Grage
Amazing place to go camping, hiking, and biking.
Solar
With the chill of Autumn it made the trail an experience. The leaves and the brisk cold made it a slight trek to find a rest stop at Mary Lake. The leaves camouflaged the rocky path and it was enjoyable, but a friend and I dwelled too long it grew dark once I was done for a night hike for half an hour.
Would recommend if you bring a lamp or light source with adequate food and clothing. 7/10.
Debra Roloff
This place is amazing. One thing is that there is poison ivy basically everywhere you look. If you make sure you stay on trail it isn't an issue though. They have tons of things going on all the time. Everything was so well kept and taken care of. The rangers and naturalists are knowledgable and helpful. The grounds are beautifully kept. The trails are fun. The hikes are fun. It is an awesome place and we can't waiet to go back.
Carol Perkins
I was here as a young girl 55 yrs ago on a family vacation an now bringing my 11 yr old Granddaughter. Walked over the headwaters of the Mississippi and climbed the fire tower and definitely worth the climb!!!
kellie pleskac
This is somewhere you have to stop and visit. It's absolutely beautiful scenery.
E Connor Kaler
This is a really beautiful park. There's area's for the kids to get in the water, too cold for me!! Great walking trails to take the dog, picinic tables with water views and a really neat nature drive if you have an extra half hour. On the nature drive I also noticed quite a few bike and walking trails that I will definitely be checking out soon. All that and only $35 for a year to ALL MN state parks!! You can't beat that!
Richard Morehouse
Awesome Park! There is a lot to do for adults and children. Had a great time camping!
The only negative experience I have to post is a couple NASTY potholes 😳 on the road to Pine Ridge campground! If it wasn't for the potholes, I would give it a 5 Star rating!! …
Michael Strathman
Nothing like putting your toes in the headwaters of the Mississippi river river where it's only a trickle! A must see for any Explorer of this world.
John Halloran
Great park lots of information places to see and things to do. Boat, bike and canoe rentals. Gift shops, food, and activities for the whole family.
You could easily spend the whole day here and still not see everything.
There is lodging, camping, and hiking here and all kinds of trails where you see wildlife in their environment.
The staff were very nice. The gift shop ppl were awesome they have a gift for everyone lots of souvenirs. They have icecream and homemade fudge thats absolutely amazing. The campground has showers there are very nice restrooms and it feels really safe in the park.
I would camp here anytime. They have winter camping and ice fishing in the winter that sounds like so much fun. This park has everything for a state park. Im glad to see the state park open again and ppl actually getting out with their families. It's humbling to see Americans being American again.
Donald Hankins
Beautiful state park. We spent a 3 day weekend with our family, and we stayed in a 3 bedroom cabin. The cabin was a log cabin built by the CCC in the 1930s. It had a screened porch and overall was quite comfortable. We also ha a nice view of Lake Itasca from the cabin. We took bicycles with us, and we rode the 16 mile loop around the lake. We also took kayaks and enjoyed going out on the lake. On one of our hikes we saw the beautiful pink lady slipper orchid
Randal Baker
Great place to ride bikes, hang out at the beach, or cool off in the visitor center. Nice cafe and gift shop at the headwaters. Great place for families of all sizes and ages. Always a crowd; if you want solitude in nature, not the place to visit.
Michael Dillon
Late October canoe camping in Itasca's SW corner. Camped along the North Country Trail at DeSoto Campsite #3. Spectacular peninsula spot with a nice canoe landing, access to several different lakes and the North Country Trail running right through the campsite. Nice fire ring, beautiful location, decent pads for 3 maybe 4 one or two person tents. Even a gorgeous view from the 3 wall outhouse. Amazing spot offering canoe camping or backpacking. More tundra swans than people!
Tiffany
I've been to several MN state parks, this is a great one! We really enjoyed the wilderness loop drive in the fall. Super clean and a nice set up overall!
Josh Thompson
Regular and yearly vacation spot for my family. Went here for Father's Day as a kid. I could spend days walking, biking, just enjoying the park. Clean and fun place to visit!
Matt Salminen
A great place for a day trip. Lots to see and do. Food and facilities are available. Beautiful views.
James Bender
Always cool to walk across the headwaters of the biggest river on the continent. Historic location. Cool interactive displays on the history of the area. Mary Gibbs is the driver of creating this park, hence the Mary Gibbs visitors center. God bless her for her advocacy. Headwaters get BUSY on the weekends. Went on a Wednesday, pics without people in them, and Saturday, busy. The wilderness loop on the west side of the park is an awesome forest drive through some old pine forests. The former record white pine was AMAZING!! 55in in diameter. Awesome sight if you appreciate old growth timber. Then the former biggest red pine is right down the road. Pretty cool. They look like lighting and/or wind took off part of the tops, unfortunately. Though still impressed by the girth of the white pine in particular.
Prajwal Pradhan
Best part is they have a cafe and gift shop.
Jodi Nies
Fantastic September tour in the peak of fall colors. We mostly drive the Wilderness Drive through canopies of colorful leaves. A few light hikes + the iconic walk across the rocks at the Mississippi Headwaters. Clean. Well maintained.
Deanna Peterson
I was shocked by the fact they allow people in the water at the beginning of the Mississippi River. They have so it's a nice photo place with lots of information. There is also camping allowed in tents, Trailers, RV, and cabins.
Angie Schatschneider
What a beautiful treasure! Boat tour was very interesting and fun to see the lake and hear historical insights. Camping is easy and nice sites. We enjoyed all the beautiful and nicely paved bike trails.
Tess Heroff
Experience the Mississippi Headwaters and the great Minnesota weather.
Marcus Schuff
Wonderful experience that all should experience at least once. The park is stunningly beautiful, and the wonderful sounds of wildlife fill the air. The Mississippi River Headwaters is a must, after all, Itasca means, "True Head" referring to the Mississippi River. The campgrounds are great, with all necessary amenities, and are close to the attractions. The best way to explore the park is by bicycle. Stop by Itasca Sports, near the Pine Ridge and Bear Paw campgrounds, to rent a bike if you didn't bring yours. You can also rent a kayak or a pontoon boat.
Justin S.
It is amazingly beautiful place! The water is so clear that you see the fish dancing around in the water:) the air is so fresh that your nose is fresh and clean ! I love the experience in this nature indulged place ! Definitely go to this place again with my loving husband and my adorable son!
Julie Schneider
There for fall colors. Mother nature didn't disappoint.
Tiffany Hemberger
You can really spend an entire day or two at Itasca as there is so much to do. We wish we would have planned our trip better. Lots of hiking trails that are for all types of hikers. We have little kids and there were many trails they were able to do and they loved it. The headwaters was fun and surprisingly we stayed there for a long time because the kids were having so much fun! The tower had over 120 steps to get to the top but the view was amazing and worth all of those steps! There is a sandy beach area with a playground, toilets and a shower along with several picnic areas. We were able to see a bald eagle that made it extra special. Great time in the good old outdoors.
Todd Lemke
Great place to get out into nature. Amazing bike trail with beautiful fall colors wilderness drive is amazing.
T. S.
Pretty close to paradise...
Campsites range from small/secluded to open pull-thrus, something for everyone. Not too buggy.
Very quiet during the week, buzzing on the weekend. Good swimming. Fantastic biking. Great playgrounds. Everything meticulously maintained, superclean facilities. Great scenery. Great Karma.
Scott Ellenberger
What a great area to be out in nature! Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, it was a real treat to be able to experience this park. See the mix of tree and plant species was very exciting, it's amazing the difference between the Midwest and the West Coast.
Unfortunately the park was really packed when we were there, but that happens sometimes. The trails were well kept, and there were some amazing views! I'll definitely be going through the park again, the next time I'm in the area. Hopefully be able to find a place to camp ad well! Would recommend this to anyone that has a couple hours to walk around!
Erin Murray
One of our favorite State Parks. Lots of hiking trails, lake recreating, beautiful views, great fishing, nice facilities, bring your bikes and water toys. So much to do here!!!
Rebecca Moreno
Had the best time on our day trip. So much to see and do! We hiked a few trails, took in the amazing views around the lake, had a picnic and drove the wilderness trail. There are so many things for all ages. Be better to plan a full weekend as you can't fit everything into one day.
Talia R
the park was beautiful! The staff were extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about questions we had. They were doing a monarch demonstration and had tons of caterpillars out for us to see at each stage of their life. A wonderful time. I would highly recommend it to others. Great for all ages.
Carol Massa
It’s just a great experience to cross the Mighty Mississippi where it begins. I was there as a kid, took my kids there, and returned now as a senior citizen. It was a lovely two days, with perfect weather. We stayed in one of the cabins, which was nice. Very clean and comfortable.
Anne Lewis
Very busy park, but you have to go see the start of the Mississippi River at least once! Lots of Lady Slipper flowers on the trails 😍 and loads of tall pine trees! The facilities are new and very interactive. They also havea place to rent bikes and water crafts! …
Lloyd Sullivan
The headwaters of the Mississippi should not be missed.
Chang-Tsan Lu
This is definitely one of my favorite state parks. It is really awesome to see the source of the greatest river of the continent - out from Lake Itasca flows a little stream that passes through many states and eventually exits at the gulf.
The fun part was to walk (and jump) over the stepping stones and say "Look, I crossed the Mississippi River!" 😀
The visitor center was informative. Some facts I learned:
1. It will take 90 days for a small droplet to travel from the headwater to the gulf.
2. The Mississippi River flows initially northbound out from Lake Itasca, passes Bemidji, and then turn toward south.
Part of the road that goes around the park was closed and therefore it didn't really allow us to drive around the park. Not sure when the road will be reopened.
Todd Mitchell
We checked this out with some friends who were visiting from another state. Anyone visiting the area should not miss seeing this naturistic and scenic area. The Visitor Center shows how it all began in the very beginning if the development of the area. There are great photos and displays. It's a great educational opportunity! Hiking down to the Mississippi Headwaters & the famous sign is a must. Eating at the Douglas Lodge was very enjoyable! We missed the chance to go on the Coburn's Cruises boat ride, so we can keep that in mind for the next visit there. Overall, this was a fantastic day taking in nature, scenery, history, good food and a little hiking. This is a place where locals repeatedly visit. They also have a campground and lots of bike trails!
Dana Broin
Nice clean and accommodating as much as they can due to covid in the cabins, some even have really nice patios.Nice drive trail as well. Must check out.
Brandon Hobbs
Great place to go explore and adventure around and there's a lot of paths to go hike and walk around on and bike paths to go on also i would recommend going here if you haven't ever been here it is worth the drive to see all the beautiful nature here.
Zach LaMarca
this is our favorite place to go. we love camping and hiking here, or even just taking a few laps around the wilderness drive. there's tons of trails to explore for all ability levels and of course there's headwaters of the most important river in the country. it's worth the trip every single time. we still haven't explored the whole park in about 10 visits over the last 4 years.
Sweetcheeks Siem
Great hiking and views!
Andrew Johnson
See the headwaters of the Mississippi River. That is the big draw of this state park, but it isn't the only thing going for it. This is a great park to go and enjoy nature, see the forest and hike on some trails.
The swim area is great, boat yours are a lot of fun. You can rent a bike if you didn't bring one.
Both the visitors center are worth stopping in. They have a fun and informative area about local animals and the history of the area. The headwaters center has a nice cafe for lunch as well.
Stephanie Allen
Beautiful place to visit! Must see the headwaters of the Mississippi. The biking trails were nicely paved. There was some construction by the playground which will be nice once it’s complete.
Heather Barron
Such a beautiful park with well maintained natural hiking trails, we go every year to spend time enjoying the outdoors at it's finest. If you haven't been to Itasca State Park you truly must go. All activities are truly amazing including hiking, biking, canoeing, swimming...they even have rentals so you don't have to haul your own gear. It's worth the drive to spend a day or two getting back to nature.
Mister Jon
Beautiful park. Take the wilderness trail (preferably bike it). Take a hike to the look out fire tower. Headwaters is a must see as well. Lots of camping options. Note cell service rarely works, but there's wifi available in certain areas (visitor center and Mary Gibbs center).
Brian Wilson
Beautiful well kept place with lots of great attractions. The Lodge looks nice and would like to stay sometime. Headwaters is always a fun place to visit and learn about. So much more there to see however.
Danny Latuff
Beautiful, scenic hiking trails, great paved bike trails, scenic swimming beach tops it all off. And its the headwaters of the Mississippi.
Carol Cline
The fire ranger tower was fascinating! The headwaters for the Mississippi River was a bit too touristy. Parents were allowing their young children to stand/play on the rocks with no concern that anyone else would want to walk across the rocks or pose for a pic without having a child in the way. I also wonder if the river mouth had been moved and designed as a tourism site. Old maps show the river mouth a bit farther west. On the drive around the whole lake, there were hardly any spots you could actually see the lake. That was disappointing. The trees, though, were beautiful!
shiney abraham
Beautiful place. Lots of trails are there. If you are here then don't forget to visit the headwaters and the fire tower. We visited during the fall season and the drive is very beautiful. We felt that the map was little confusing. If you are coming from twin cities then enter through east entrance. It's the most nearest entrance. Mary Gibbs center is very nice - Friendly people. Cabins are available inside the state park. We plan to stay there in future.
Lois Bickford
Beautiful park, lots of hiking and biking trails. The deer weren't afraid of us. Seeing the headwaters of the Mississippi is cool too.
Kevin Kuether
Beautiful clean lakes but a few too many mosquitos. If you go off the beaten path ticks abound. That said the view from the fire watch tower is one of the best I have seen anywhere.
def rabbit
Wonderful wilderness, fire tower to climb, miles of bike paths, great park for the family. Calm and peaceful from the city life. Snapping turtles, red squirrel, bluejay, swan, and bald eagle. Love Itasca State Park.
Jess Kaufman
We did the big biking loop... They say it's 17 miles but, my GPS tracker stated 15.86. hilly but, there are some long hills to cruise downhill which, is really nice.
Valen Spencer
love the trails also fishing was fun would recommend for people just wanting to soak up nature and have a nice walk
Jordan Gardner
This park is incredibly beautiful, there I always something breathtaking waiting around every corner. The park is incredibly clean, crystal clear waters, giant pine forests, and wildlife everywhere. I highly recommend visiting, I for one will be going back!
Sara Mills
Great way to spend a day or a weekend. Plenty to do, from bike and boat rentals, to camping, hiking trails for all levels of comfort, picnic and swimming areas, and of course, the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
Be sure to check out some of the other historical sites as well, such as the lookout tower or the old cabins, the Indian Mounds, or Preachers Cove and the Pioneer Cemetery
It can get really busy on the weekends though, so beware of that.
Peter Carlson
Great park in northern MN. Bike trails get converted over to cross county ski trails in winter. Kept in pretty good condition. Back country camp sites are open Year round and are awesome for winter camping.
B F
Itasca State Park offers a number of activities for kids and families. The towering pines are beautiful and the headwaters are a must-see spot. All of the park staff that I have interacted with have been friendly and helpful.
Michael Sperr
Fun times at the park. Ranger Station tower has a great view from atop, scary for the fear of heights folks. Headwaters of Mississippi River was a great way to cool off on a hot day... Kids enjoyed walking down to the bridge in waist deep water.
Fru
This park is a classic. Have always gone in summer. But really enjoyed it in the winter. Bring your snow shoes!
Dorian Warner
Very large park with lots of things to see. Plan for a full day just to see the main attractions but you will need at least a weekend to really do some exploring.
Ellen Hines
You could spend at least a couple days here just walking around! Our visits mostly include a short walk to the headwaters and a trip to the excellent onsite restaurant. (Get the Walleye Nibblers.) If you want to walk in the Mississippi, bring sandals and a towel. Great photo op, beautiful scenery... It reminds of a 1960's camp postcard in the best way possible.
Caleb Sullivan
Most beautiful state park I’ve been to. Seriously recommend!
Mckenzie Tollefson
My favorite state park for sure. Love camping in bear paw. The bike trails are so much fun and the water was cool and clear, perfect for the summer heat. I highly recommend kayaking around the lake, the scenery is breathtaking. So many loons! We even saw a bird diving for fish in the water right by our kayaks.
Sergio Landa
It was a wonderful experience and I gotta say this is for someone who like to spend time with nature and does mind being away from the city and technology :).
Jaime luis madera-mattei
Beautiful place. Loved the trails, the lakes, the views. A most go to in Minnesota. Will return still a lot to do and see
Ron Hensel
If you go to the Itasca State Park in Northern Minnesota to see the Mississippi headwaters don't miss the visitors center. The State of Minnesota did a fantastic job of illustrating the history of the lakes that create the mighty Mississippi river in it's 2300 and change journey to the Gulf of Mexico. You can even tread the headwaters (although it's a tenuous trek) and claim that you walked across the Mississippi. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful park.
Raymond Baker
I've only camped at a couple MN state parks but I don't believe I'll find a better one. So many great activities available and I recommend doing them all.
The beauty of the old growth forest is special, especially from the bike path.
dakota kropf
This is a great experience. You can walk across the Mississippi headwaters, go hiking, biking, picnicking, camping, kayaking, and climb a fire tower. Or just take a leisurely ride through the park.
Kaaren Mikus
I wanted a mother/daughter day with my girl. We had a great time picking which spots to go to, and then checking them off on the map. Can't wait to go again.
Kate TreeBeard “Fool of a took!”
Headwaters of the Mississippi! The visitor centre had some fun (small) interactive exhibits but we still had fun. Offers really nice chill walks
jjrangerm
Family trip to MN, had to make a stop here so the kids could walk across the great Mississippi River. Lots of camping, fishing, hiking/biking and wildlife. Watch for deer and black bear on the roads close to the park.
Abbie5 Bastien
Beautiful place to visit with young kids so they were the start of the Mississippi is!! Go in the water and play around!
Kara Carlson
Beautiful state park with over 100 lakes! We rented bikes and rode the trail with our two kids. They loved it! Bring the mosquito repellent!
Stacy Campbell
So many awesome adventures to have! We climbed the 100 ft. Tower, hiked and crossed where the missiouri river starts. The river boat cruise was closed which was a bummer! But we could have spent a week soakiing up nature.
James Brecht
Amazing place, it was great to see the start of the Mississippi, opening weekend and the water was warm to walk in. The drive was nice, you can see the whole park from the top of the fire tower.
Tanner Paladino
Great area for camping, trails, and enjoying the immersion within nature.
Diane Brown
Beautiful scenery, where the Mississippi River begins. You can walk across the great Mississippi River at Lake Itasca State park in northern Minnesota.
Stephan L K
We love this park! After all, this is where the Mississippi River begins.
Rivers Moon
Enjoy the hike, the beginning of the Mississippi River, the camp, the history of the place very interesting, live the natural enjoy nature.
Really good experience ♡
Quentin Rouhoff
Mississippi Headwaters is only the start. Climb the fire tower, stop in to one of the museums and hike for beautiful ladyslippers and majestic pines! This place needs to be on your Minnesota bucket list!
Skip Clarin
Signage to get to a RV Dumping station are really, really hard to find. Once there (at the dump station) have poor sinage also. I ended up down by the cabins with no turn around. I had to back out. I've only backed up 4 times. But I got out. I won't be back! EVER!!
Josh Wyss
Beautiful and well maintained park just like all Minnesota State parks. Make sure to get your state park pass online before arriving so that you can use the express car lane for entry instead of waiting in line to buy a pass in person.
Katrina Thomas
What a beautiful day we had, a beautiful place. We went for my bday, saw a black bear in the woods, a deer as we were getting ready to leave. Was a great way to spend the day.
Marius “Omegamar” schueller
Itasca State Park is an excellent area that really gives a natural feeling. For example, you feel like you are somewhat in the woods when walking through the park. You also get an adventurous feeling when there. You can explore places a little off the path and get truly amazing photos.
Steven Shumaker
One of the best State Parks I have seen and it helps that its in MN. Also check out the two hour long boat tour for only 16 dollars.
Bob Brannon
Absolutely breathtaking at the time we were there Sunday October 2. Fall colors are so wonderful where there are a diversity of trees.
Mike Wendling
Visitor center was spectacular and the park was beautiful and we really enjoyed seeing the beginning of the Mississippi as it left Lake Itasca! Very well worth the drive.
Naomi Swanson
Campground was very nice. Showers and bathrooms are clean. We went to the Visitor center on a rainy day. There are lots of exhibits to explore. Great for kids. Lunch at Douglas lodge was delicious and wer had good service.
Art Olstead
Certainly the finest park in Minnesota and on par with the best national parks on the USA. A must see. The bike trails are paved and offer lots of variety.
Don Davidson
Beautiful lake and natural area, with hiking trails, campgrounds, and much more. This is where the Mississippi River begins.
Erin Nicole
Such a beautiful place to visit. So many historical sites to stop and see. Great for a family day or weekend!
Maelca Duncan (MAELCA)
Nice sight seeing , good trail for work fresh air lots of wild animals and wild flowers, hoping to visit again
Kerrie Flaten
One of the best parks!
Katie Gullickson
There are a lot of things to do at this park! We spent the majority of the day there and didn't see everything. The webcam at the headwaters was really neat. We were able to tell our family in California to watch it and they were able to see us. The picnic area near the Indian Mounds was one of our favorite spots.
Ximena Guerrero
Awesome park. Beautiful landscapes. The starting point of Mississippi River. Very Spacious.
Ian Cull
Too many mosquitoes, but very beautiful!
Grant Fifield
Great staff and lots to do. Hiking, biking, swimming, camping, and dipping your feet in the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
Becca Schaffer
What an amazing place! Lots of things to see and experience. Perfect trip for all
Jimmie Johnson
My girlfriend and I visited this beautiful State Park last Saturday the 10 of October 2020. I must say we loved it. To see the beginning of the Mighty Mississippi River was a dream come true. We will most certainly be returning to visit again.
Nithya Susan Jacob
Itasca state park, where mighty Mississippi starts it's Journey. One of the beautiful and well-maintained state park in MN.
Shannon Amundson-Knittel
Wonderful hiking, and historical information about the settlement. The Mississippi headwaters were a draw for several people this weekend.
Hanevy White
Best weekend to see the fall colors!! Easy trails but a little wet and cold.
Lynn Blazevic
We brought our granddaughter's for the day. They enjoyed the visitor center exhibits. We stopped at the picnic area and played and had lunch. Visited the headwaters and took pictures. It was a full history and fun adventure for them ages 3,10,12.
Super Travels
Wonderfully peaceful in the winter. Soft light snow makes all of the trees look magical.
Ashley F.
There is so much to do here and it is absolutely gorgeous! It is now our favorite State Park and we will be back again!
Alice Holliday
Beautiful Park! So many different things to do, something for everyone. I didn't know there was a swimming beach so my son was super happy!
Jeff Freeland
Great place to visit. I would recommend it for people of all ages. So much to see and do. I can't wait to go back and spend more time.
Melissa Warfield
Itasca State Park is the oldest state park when it was established in 1891 in Minnesota. The state park is the headwaters of the Mississippi River where it starts. Walk across the mighty Mississippi. There are many exhibits and the history of the state park. There are camping grounds. So much fun exploring the oldest state park in Minnesota!!
Penny Johnson
Absolutely beautiful!! A place to experience because its too hard to describe!!! You need to smell the forest!!
Sheena Arias
This was our first visit to this state park which came very highly recommend from everyone we talked to. We were disappointed, however, when we arrived at our campsite (after being in the car for 4 hours) at being chased back into the car by a huge swarm of ravenous mosquitoes. I have never seen so many mosquitoes in my life. They tormented us our entire stay- at our campsite, in our camper, in the bathrooms, at the sites and gift shops - everywhere. We were forced to stay inside our camper much of the time. I'm perplexed that not one person we talked to who had been there mentioned this. I give the park 4 stars anyway for the headwaters which was thoroughly enjoyable and the boat tour on which we were able to see loons and a bald eagle catch a fish and take it back to its nest to eat. We may return some day, better armed against mosquitoes, to see the sites we missed and return to the headwaters.
Joe H
Great place to get away. Boat, pontoon and canoe rentals available and paved bike trails through the whole park. Beautiful park for camping!
Elizabeth VanValkenburg
It's amazing to see the beginning of the river and is a beautiful area to explore!
Luke Gorski
Big park in southern Clearwater County, if you get away from people, you will find bugs. You have to pick one. I did a 11 and a half mile loop near the south end of the park and finished with the Dr. Roberts Trail, which was a good one to finish with. The fire tower was really impressive, with trees as far as the eye could see. If you want to see the fire tower without tons of people, go there first thing in the morning at 8AM. I kind of lucked out in terms of foot traffic, with only one group being there when I got there, but when I was leaving the tower, tons of people were coming up the hill.
Elizabeth Lipsh
My husband and I took a ride on the bike to have lunch and look at the beautiful view we will be back to see the color change
Bruce Falkum
We have been coming to Itasca for over 30 years. Many of the camp sights are in desperate need of improvement. Many children ride their bikes around the camp sights. The roads should be paved and the sights should have crushed rock. Another dump sight should also added, and the existing one improved. One way or the other , we'll keep coming back. The improvements that have done, are really great.
R Stanek
This park is huge, extremely clean, and absurdly beautiful! I love that the trails are largely paved or mulched and are well maintained, so we didn’t run into any issues with ticks!
A word of advice for if you’re checking out the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi, hike about a quarter mile beyond the little bridges and you’ll hit some pretty beaches that are less crowded and are perfect for wading around.
Jennifer Short
Beautiful trails! Nicely maintained with nature's offerings in mind.
Thomas Finch
Beautiful place. My family make a nearly annual visit there, and we always see new things. The headwaters area, and the tour boat are really cool things to visit.
Mikayla Cannon
Love Itasca State Park so many things to do and see. You can rent cabins, camp, rent boats and so much more.
Larry Sawyer
It's not every day you can walk across the mouth of the mighty Mississippi River. Beautiful park.
Karen Downing
Incredible park; cabins, lodge, restaurant, boat tour, hiking trails, biking trails, driving tour and so much more.
L.K. Reyes
Very nice place to hike!
Roamin' Rich
We had a great time here even though Linda screwed up our reservation by making it for the day before I made the reservation. Not even sure how she did that but it cost me an hour of my life to straighten out and actually had a brief confrontation with a fellow RVer that I thought was squatting in my space.
Julle Dalle
Stayed over in a cabin, clean but pricey, enjoyed evening campfire, beautiful trails, fishing on the lake!
Edward Neilsen
Lots of fun walking across the Mississippi they have a really nice Visitor Center there and easy-to-follow path
Jake Swart
I had a blast here on the bike trails and at the campground, great place to visit and camp.
Catie Waller
Great place for a family trip! We loved the showers and bathrooms also.
Levi DeLange
Beautiful park! It has helpful historical information throughout. And there's a gift shop.
Cornell Anderson
Beautiful park that is well maintained. Canoed 21 miles down river from the headwaters .
Ron Binning
A great State Park, from the Welcome Center, to the source of the Mississippi River, and the hiking trails, camping sites, it has everything.
dawn wade
Beautiful no matter what time of year you visit! We normally visit the park in the Summer months this was the first time we have been up there during the Winter but we wanted to get another generational picture there so we stopped there long enough to go in the gift shop and then a quick walk to the headwaters for a couple pics. The lady in the gift shop was so friendly and she was glad to see people as it was right before closing time and we were the only people to show up at the park that day probably because it was like 13 degrees outside and there was several feet of snow lol it was very cold so we just ran out there took our pictures and ran back to our car lol but we had fun!
Brad Kinner
Most of the leaves have fallen, but painted a beautiful "carpet" on the trail.
Radcliffe
Very informative visitor center and beautiful ride to the Mississippi's very beginning at Itasco Lake.
Kyle Fitzsimmons
Fantastic park all around except for the park ranger woman who takes her job way too serious...
Pegi Davis
What a lovely location. Big Rig friendly - easy in and out - clean and comfortable. Requires State Park Use Pass purchased separate from campground reservation. Campfire wood available at ranger station / check -in spot load and pay at station then post paid ticket at campsite. Never did see a ranger at the station. Great hiking trails.
Christine Johnson
Quintessential camping. Just perfect. One of our favorite MN State Parks.
Donald Spatz
Great bicycle paths. Nice lake. Chance to walk across the headwaters of the Mississippi.

Jessica Swartout
Went in mid- October and holy cow is it beautiful! The tamaracks look incredible & everything smells amazing. “Up north” in the fall is highly underrated
Liz Erickson Monson
Home of the Headwaters of the Mississippi! There are sleeper cabins and several other great trails beyond the headwaters hike as well.
Vince P
My favorite state park. Often over looked in late fall & winter. There's a lot to do for every age group.
Waylon Farley
Beautiful vast lands of trees lakes and rivers! Lots of animals and wilderness
Ron Withers
A beautiful place to relax, appreciate nature, and wonder and the headwaters of the great Mississippi River. So much to see and do.
Nancy Ness
It's all around nice. Nice camp areas and flush restrooms with showers. Everyone was friendly. Park rangers went through quite frequently. Restrooms seemed to be about 250 feet apart, so fairly close to any site.
Thomas B. Myers
Beautiful wilderness get away... Water and trees and sun and fun!
Krishna Kundu
It is always my favorite place for fall color! We visited yesterday. It is on fire! We enjoyed it🥰 …
Tracey Janisch
Always a great place to visit and let the kids have fun.
Jeremy Jensen
Awesome park. I'll be planning another trip to explore more
Christie Will
This park is huge. Wish we would have came earlier because we could have stayed all day long. Lots to explore. Crystal clear water. Amazing view. HORRIBLE biting flies though. Bring and ample supply of bug spray.
Carla L Boyd
It is a special place in this world. A place to treasure, enjoy, and leave no trace of your visit so the next person and feel the beauty of the earth and sky.
Amy Y
Camped in Pine Ridge, site 225. No tent pad, but lots of room to put on gravel. *Note there is poison ivy and lots of it, but as long as you stay on the gravel an awesome campground. Bathrooms were extremely clean and showers were private with hot water. Staff at check in were very helpful. $7 for a bundle of wood and glad we got 2 since the fire pit is larger than normal. Does have a fire grate, but only swings side to side and does not lower. Also grabbed a 12lb bag of ice -$6? Typical teenage son doesn't remember exact amount. Visited the headwaters of the Mississippi (2.5mi drive from campsite) and it was very pretty. Waited our turn to walk across and even in June the water wasn't too cold. Would highly recommend this park and camping if you need to. Watch the poison and bring bug spray, otherwise 5+ stars!!
Diane Seefeldt
Beautiful peaceful park. Wonderful helpful staff.
Brenda Blair
Mosquitos in June have a 1000 to 1 advantage. Otherwise saw improvements from previous visits. Rest room/ shower facilities in good order, clean.
Del C
I saw this as a child. Sixty years later it is still impressive. More developed and more people but still great
Stephanie
Miles of quiet. I've only been here twice, but the experience is so worth the wait.
Nobody Special
Love this place. 2nd time we've been here from the other end of the country. Disabled Vets get in free, ask.
Pia Thao
Amazing in the fall! A must stop if you're driving through. Mighty Mississippi
Elizabeth F Bacon
It is so big and so many beautiful sites to see. We didn't check out any trails except the one to the headwaters because of the rain, but it was still gorgeous!!!!
Caitlin Britten
Beautiful park! Nice and clean facilities and close to a lake!
Josh Pehl
Truly a cathedral of nature. Huge park with lots to see. I've been coming here periodically since I was a kid and it's always fun. Really great swimming beach on the lake near the headwaters. You can even walk in the Mississippi river just after the headwaters. Come prepared, wear swimgear. We also ate at the cafe. Ready made cold but fancy sandwiches. Great experience all around!
Eric Nistler
I consider this park the crown jewel of the state park system. Has every amenity you would expect from a state park plus ones such as being located at the Mississippi headwaters that make it a must see. If you go, bring your bicycles as the trails are some of the most fun trails anywhere paved for any age.
For campgrounds there are two, stay in bear paw if you want a more developed, mowed grass experience, and pine ridge if you prefer tall trees and a more rustic feeling camp.
Brian Pedersen
Best park in Minnesota! Amazing views and facilities.
Gerry Fiddler
Great park. Awesome to see where the Mississippi River starts it's trek towards the Gulf of Mexico!
Mary Jansen
We were hoping to see the yellow lady slippers this weekend, however, the pink lady slippers and the yellow lady slippers are both gone now. Hopefully we'll get to see them next year.
We had a great picnic in the park, we had a nice swim, we enjoyed visiting the gift shops and found a special Itasca t-shirt. We also shared an ice cream at the end of the day and we were able to see the start to the Mississippi River for a second time. This place has a great restaurant as well and I hear Douglas Lodge has great milkshakes.
Tracy Frizzell
Did the 16 mile bike loop through the park & then around on Wilderness Drive. Gorgeous fall colors! It would be nice if the park painted a bicycle lane stripe on the road. There are signs clearly marking it as "Share the Road" but lots of cars going too fast & unnecessarily passing too close.
Lynn Gustafson
Easy walk to the headwaters. You can cross the mighty Mississippi over well-placed large rocks or on a wide split log that is sturdy. It is well worth the drive to see this beautiful lake and the beginning of the Mississippi River.
aj jackson
What an awesome park! I came up on September 16th and stayed in the backpack campsite #11. It was a hell of a hike to my spot, but was well worth the effort. I had 2 mosquito bites in the 3 days I was there. Fall is the best time to visit the park, because the leaves are starting to change and no bugs! Just bring some warm gear for the nights. The staff was helpful and great and every person I met on the trails were very kind and always had a smile. It's a huge park and there is always something to do or go look at. even in Covid times when some of the restaurants and what not are closed.
M P
There is a $7 fee here. It was Sunday but it was somewhat crowded. The headwaters of the Mississippi are here.
Greg Swiers
Always great.. lady moccasins are blooming
Peter Scott
Beautiful park. Huge, and needs more than one day to explore.
Neil
It's the origin of the greatest river on the continent. Great hiking, biking, and skiing trails. What more could you want?
Srikanth Vijjamarri
A wonderful state park. It was a great feeling to do kayaking in the headwaters of the Mississippi River, Itasca State Park. Plenty of trails for hiking and walking. You can find the oldest trees around here.
Beth Mainville
It was a nice day for a motorcycle ride and to make a Minnesota iconic stop. With Charles Michaud III. Nice ride on one of the loops was beautiful and peaceful.
David Vriezen
Lots of nice trails, great beach. Camped for a few nights, had a lovely time
Kirsten Klimek
It was so beautiful here. Stayed at the campground. It was so peaceful and that was surprising for the size. The sites had nice spacing. The staff at the gift shops and visitor center were all very nice. The trails for hiking were beautiful and we'll maintained. The rental place for kayaks, bikes and boats was very convenient. Can hardly wait to come back again.
Maggie Olson
Lovely park with lots of places to walk. Dog friendly! And toddler friendly! 😉☺️ we took a few short walks on the paths and then drove through the park, we followed 117 and saw some amazing views! 10/10 will go again! …
Travin Burda
We had a blast with the family out on a boat.
Kay Kuschel
The showy lady slipper, Minnesota's State Flower can be found at Lake Itasca State Park where the Mississippi River begins it journey to the gulf of Mexico.
Lorraine Reinert
Amazing lakes and Trails systems.
Larry Allen

You can rent bikes or kayaks too.
Jean Marie Sparks
Beautiful even in the rain. Fun to walk across the Mississippi! Saw lots of Lady Slippers while were there!
Jonathan Posthuma
Important state park with some nice trails and sites. Cabins were wonderful way to stay in park, but are claimed very early. Mosquitoes and flies can be a problem. Trails are nice but a lot of "green tunnel" with few overlooks.
Carolyn Gracy
Wonderful. We particularly enjoyed touring the park on the bike path.
Shannon Roth
You cannot get much better than the beautiful hiking, biking, fishing, and enjoying the terrain. A perfect family experience! We recommend both tent camping and staying in the suites/lodging.
e g
Very Nice
steve roberts
Fun restaurant with the humming birds outside. Great shakes. For a raining day.
John Wicklund
Since we've been to the headwaters of the Missouri and the Colorado thought it was time to checkout the Mississippi. Nice park.
Arn Plowman
Best forest in Minnesota, great hiking, biking and campgrounds.
Jerrid Hart
My friends and I saw a guy drinking a gallon of milk, straight out of the carton, while hiking. We loved every minute of it. I also found a big stick, it was cool. I had a great time.
gwen guzman
Need to come back for more than a day trip. Would love to spend time camping and exploring.
Moiz Khan
This is a beautiful state park with a lot of opportunities for outdoor activities and also many large picnic areas. We had a large party and enjoyed the picnic by the lake in peace and quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I would recommend spending more than a day exploring the park and it’s different trails.
Amelia Johnson
I love this state park! It has super nice biking trails and it is gorgeous. The headwaters are also really cool
M G
This is a large state park and with the best attraction in the area... the Headwaters of the Mississippi River. Here's where you get a chance to wade across the Mighty Mississippi or jump from stone to stone! There are plenty of campground and boat rentals in the park. It is still a little closed down due to Covid. It is worth the sidetrack to go visit and take the photo! There is a $7 entry fee to the park per car.
Ryan Jozwiak
Beautiful Minnesota state park with a wonderfully groomed bike trail and well-planned to be accessible to many different levels of ability
Brianna Borka
I hadn't been there as an adult. I hadn't CAMPED as an adult on my own. We loved our campsite. We were camping with our two dogs and visited the headwaters and the fire tower. The only negative part of our experience was the maps and signage. I know how to read maps, and maybe part of our problem was getting there late (so we had no one to ask) but we got SO lost and confused trying to find the Pine Ridge Campground since it looks like it's so far from the Bear Paw campground on the map. Eventually we accidentally came in through the back of the Oak loop somehow! Fwiw, we entered at the East entrance and I think we missed the initial "campground" sign that was right away. I wish it was clearer!
Igor Paploski
Itasca is a great State Park. Wonderful infrastructure, beautiful scenery. Don't miss the headwaters, keep your eyes sharp for a bear. If you can, rent a cabin or spend a night in one of the campsites. Truly beautiful.
Matt Didley
Lot of things happening at this place from three gift shops, volleyball court down by the lake, very nice bike trails, camping, snowmobiling, the headwater crossing, restaurants, music in the park....you get the idea.
Deborah Nelson
It's the Headwaters of the Mississippi what else needs to be said! Beautiful place! Maintained very well!
chris dancesia
Awesome Park! Visit the start of the Mississippi River in Northern Minnesota
Kevin Donahue
Despite covid setbacks, we were able to stay in Douglas lodge cabins in July 2021. (Staff shortage reduced days/hours of when lodge restaurant open) Not the fault of park that due to drought we could not have a campfire-dang! Beautiful place with biking, hiking, and boating.
Tom Carlstrom
Hard not to give 5 stars with this state park. It is the biggest and oldest state park in MN. So much to see! The campgrounds are well kept and are quiet considering how many people stay there.
Dawn Alitz
Great trails, lots to do even in off-season.
kim k
Beautiful park with so much to do. I've been going here my whole life.
Judson Stagnaro
It's a beautiful state park! We are so lucky to have such a great park within a couple hour drive. They did a great job with the headwaters center as well.
Peggy Hammeken
Great park. Nice campsite; two restaurants on site. Bike, boat rental also available. Great park!!
WutsPoppin
Great Park! This is a big park so get ready to explore! Highly recommend parking at the top of the park and biking down to the headwaters. If you can't haul your bike you can rent one in the park. Boats, paddle boards, kayaks also available for rent in the park. Camping in the parks is also fantastic. electric sites have full bathrooms including showers and both electric and non have easy access to firewood and ice available for purchase 24/7 via dropbox payment.
Blake Doblinger
This is easily one of the best parks in the state. Burt's cabins are nice and clean.
Jeremy Juntunen
Beautiful sites to see nice park/swimming area for the kids and miles and miles of hiking/bikeing trails. Plus the yearly park pass is only $30 what more can you ask for.
Martha Sharpe
This is a beautiful State Park. We loved the park. Friendly staff and very informative.
Tammy Larson
Amazing we rented bikes and did some trails. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Can spend whole day here. We also went to Douglas Lodge Restaurant which is excellent.
Christy Wood
Great place to hike and to see the headwaters of the Mississippi River. We camped here as well and it was nice and quiet. It dies get really dark at night so make sure to bring your flashlights.
Ibrahim Dousky
Beautiful nature and fairly maintained trails, it does get a bit crowded at Mississippi headwaters. The only advise I will give is to do a TICK CHECK especially on kids and pets. I have traveled to many places and I have never seen a worst place than Itasca for ticks so take lot of precautions.
Noah Becker
Love this place! Go here every year. Fishing is great, the drive through is great, the visitor centers are wonderful and there's SO much to do. You can just drive through the park, grab some ice cream and walk thr headwaters or spend a week fishing, hiking, camping, and more. No matter what you enjoy you'll have fun, trust me.
Ashley Salmonson
The park has SO much to see and do. The headwaters were awesome to see and get in- so many dogs, which was so fun! The park map could have had more details (info on the one-way road, distances marked). The backpacking sites were not large enough for 2 tents- the brush needs to be cut back.
Eric B
This place is cool, not because of the time of year we went, but because of the river. I hear its a pretty long river, and it starts here. Check out some of the other trails while you're at it. There's more to this place than walking across the Mississippi river.
T “Hisbride” Stewart
A favorite. Headwaters of the Mississippi River. Be sure go check it out.
Check Point
Great place to camp if you want more privacy at elk group camp. The sad part is there aren’t any bass in lake itasca. The smaller lakes surrounding maybe has more. I just hate to drive all the way around to get back to your destination because it one way.
Magician Roogna
Always a great place to visit, waded into the Mississippi River, walked across the rocks and waded in with my dog before the stream came to the stepping stones.
Kathy McMullen
Only thing would be better is cell service. Yes, I know we come here to unplug, but knowing where your going is very helpful & in case of emergencies, of course. Bathrooms were nice and clean! Campsites were small and close together.
ernie mack
Plenty of things to do. Beautiful scenery.
Katy Freidig
Beautiful place. The under bridge is full of chewed gum placed by park patrons.
Cathleen Vilmont
So very lovely, beauty abounding. The beginning of the Mississippi, the little creek from the lake that turns into such a mighty river. Fun to wade through the river! would highly recommend
Kenneth Grant
Great bike trails and pretty cheap rentals. Definitely coming back sometime.
David Hanson
One of the top state parks in Minnesota. A must visit for anyone who loves the outdoors. Go cross the rocks!
Alex
Beautiful place. From what I saw, most if not all camping spots have good shade, plenty of space and good for both tent and RV/camper. Bike trail is great, too. Will definitely be back next summer.
David Anderson
It is a nice place there is a good trail system here and lots of hiking. The trails here are hilly and can be a challenge. The lake was beautiful and the park as a whole is really nice. Seriously go here in the fall and look at all the amazing colors, take a long walk in the woods, get kinda lost out there it is a big woods with lots to see.
David Engelstad
Lots to do: the headwaters, visitor center, hiking trails, lake tour, lady slippers, swimming, ranger led nature-walks and blueberry malts at Douglas Lodge...
Beware the bugs (mosquitoes and deer flies in mid-summer), but otherwise expect a good time.
Alisha Blazevic
This Park is amazing. It's beautiful and going to see the Headwaters of the Mississippi River is a must-do if you are anywhere within a couple hours drive of the park. This Park is perfect for both a full or half day trip for non-outdoorsy people, and it is perfect for a days to weeks long vacation for the outdoorsy people. The staff is always friendly and helpful despite the volume of Summer visitors. It is a yearly must-go-to for our family and we look forward to the park every time.
Leslie Day
Great Park! So much to do.
Erik Culp
Ann awesome way to spendthe day hiking the trails and enjoying nature! Looking out from the watch tower was awesome!!
Kirk Anton || Heat Transfer Warehouse
Always a great place to go and enjoy nature.
Adam Taylor
Great place to visit!!! Will go back as soon as I can!!!!
Brian Baysinger
Really nice SP. Busy during the week after labor day.
Sarah R Jirak
Very quiet after a very rainy Sunday.
Michael Scott
Best place to experience walking across the Mississippi River.
Sarah Potts
My family loved exploring this stated park. We only skimmed the top of it so we plan on going back and I can't wait!
Anton Volosciuc
It will take 90 days for a drop of water to reach the Gulf of Mexico.
Jon Clark
Excellent state park. Great campsites, good amenities. Friendly staff and visitors.
Sandra Aarestad
Itasca State park has a lot of everything for everyone. Plenty of trails, camp grounds, boating, hiking, riding bikes, and is covered for winter activities also. Restaurant and lodging!! Head waters of the Mississippi. Lots of picnic ares and two beaches for swimming.
Terry Moore
Reasonable campground sites. Level, not too tightly packed, big enough for class A rigs. Excellent food at the lodge. Plenty of hiking and canoeing opportunities. Nice information displays at the Mississippi Headwaters visitors center. Maps could use some more detail and information about trails and attractions.
L D
One of the best State Parks in Minnesota. The headwaters are great. It's nice when there is not anyone there, but just as enjoyable when there are other families around having fun. A lot of main hiking trails and trails for more experienced hikers. So many historical places in the area to check out while in Itasca as well. It's a fun place to get away and just forget about the daily grind.
Tracey Branden
We rented one of the cabins with a 4-plex, very clean. The boat ride was amazing too. Love the gift shops, very friendly staff throughout the park!!
Alexander Larsen
A must see if you find yourself in Northern Minnesota! From here my whole life and still visit multiple times a year.
H D
One of the best State Parks around!!
Carol Westphal
Was here for a couple nights stay and to do the hikers club trail. All was great, except make sure to bring some potent bug spray. The natural sprays won't cut it here!
John Genty
Beautiful with plenty of hiking trails.
S Michels
This is a beautiful park with much to see and do. Perfect for family time or the engaged wanderer. I recommend scheduling a minimum of two full days in the park in late September when the leaves are turning and visiting all of the major points: wilderness drive, largest pine, fire tower, boating on the lake (very reasonable rates for rentals!), bike /walking trails (rentals!), fishing (I caught bass) and events at the interpretive centers. I stayed at a camp site without electricity and the site was excellent - plenty of shade, space and privacy, convenient to modern showers/restrooms. The lodge had good breakfast fare in a comfortable environment. Take your time and ENJOY!
Jeffery “jekewa” Warren
Took the kids to the Mississippi Headwaters. They weren't thrilled, but put up with us. For a few cursory "wow" connects as we showed them the geographic big deal it is, and talked about how hard it would be to find without roads and GPS. They completely enjoyed splashing around in the stream that starts the river.
Arne Rantanen
Nice open but semi-secluded campsites. Clean bathrooms. Nice playgrounds for the kids. Beach is nice, although a little Rocky at the beginning. Lots of bike trails. Lots of stuff to see. We've been here 7 times now and find something new each time.
Vicky Faul
Lake Itasca it's a nice place for nature lovers
Ron Jenko
Beautiful park, this should be a National Park. The headwaters of the mighty Mississippi. So much to do and see from biking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, paddle board, pontoons, camping, the views from the the fire tower summer and fall leaves are wonderful, the history. This park should be on everyone's bucket list to visit!
Lucinda Dunbar
Great place to kayak, hike and learn some history. Onion rings and veggie Burger was great at the lodge. Really nice bike trail and loop to ride.
Shel Johnson
Third week in September was fantastic with multiple colors and mild temperatures in the daytime. Evenings get cool, but it's worth a little chill for the beautiful days.
Rick Larson
Beautiful park and very friendly people.
Robin Turnwall
This magnificent park is a place of history, incredible scenery and accessibility to all of it! The park gives everyone the chance to marvel at God's greatest creations. It is also the park that gives you bragging rights for walking across the Mississippi River!
Christopher Guelcher
A scenic and historic park where the headwaters of the Mississippi River begins its amazing journey. The hiking trails and the drive around the park are of unparalleled beauty.
Rev Martin Shanahan
Wonderful park and to think here is the collective start of the majestic Mississippi...wow!
Jessi Goerger
We love the Mississippi headwaters, and watching the cool tour boat!
Carl S
Great state park! Quiet and not bordered by a very busy road like other MN state parks so calling is quiet. Bugs were really bad in July, but the headwaters is nice, a really short hike and easy to get to. All around a fun trip!
Travis Ball
Spent 4 nights at the historic east cabin and they were fantastic! We had a few unwelcome house guest, but in a 100 year old cabin in a forest we where not surprised. It was quite had ac/heat for the bipolar weather and the DNR are super friendly and helpful.
Joshua Virtue
One of my favorite state parks
Clara Emma
State Park charm, National Park feel. This state park had me transported. I felt like I was home in the Blue Mountains of Washington and Oregon. Wading across the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi was a thrill. I plan to go back with my bicycle in tow so I can bike the 10 plus miles of paved trail.
Nate Mattison
Itasca is always worth visiting, due to its awesome nature. After camping there this weekend, we were a little disappointed to find that the trails were unkept. One of the main hiking trails had grass and weeds over 3 feet tall. The Hiking Club trail hadn't been mowed recently either. Both were swarming with deer flies and mosquitoes, and neither offered much of a destination to make the hike worthwhile.
We were also surprised to find that with 258 campsites there was only one dump station, which is at the smaller Bear Paw campground. We were fortunate to not have to wait 5+ RVs in line, only because we departed early in the morning.
Aside from those two primary concerns, we had a great trip. We rented a pontoon boat and enjoyed a scenic tour of the winding lake. It was too windy for other rentals, unfortunately. We visited the headwaters twice, and our kids had a great time crossing the rocks and walking up and down stream. We also visited the fun shops in downtown Park Rapids and go carts in between. Lots for everyone on this trip!
Trisha Page
A family favorite; we love visiting Itasca and make a point to go several times a year. It is well worth the drive from ND. Lakes, hiking, and tress are a beautiful any time of the year. The wildlife, the history, and the all-ages focus make exploring fun, enjoyable, and truly relaxing. They have an ability to meet ALL of your needs!
S. A.
It's a beautiful spot to hike and explore and dip your feet in the water.
Andy Goedland
Itasca is a must for my family and I every time we are near. Awesome day today weather wise and the bugs were not bad either
Courtney Olson
This place is beautiful! We love going camping here. The grounds are always clean and very family oriented. The bathrooms/shower areas are some of the best I’ve ever seen in a state park. There’s swimming, camping, rentals of all kinds, and great shops in surrounding towns! I would highly recommend spending some time here in the fall as well. I can’t express enough how breathtaking the views are.
Pac Cadreau
Love it here. Memories of coming to camp with my parents and siblings in the 1950's. Came over from Jamestown ND. My husband and I are now living in Park Rapids, we camp every June in Itasca.
Angela Struthers
Been going to Itasca park since I was kid, I know bring my kids and grandkids, this year we all met up with my sister and brother in law, and spent Mother's day there. Everyone climbed the tower, and walked thru trails, grandkids played in the water at the mouth of the Mississippi, got lots of family photos, the sun was out, it was a perfect family-Mothers day.
P L
Love the Mississippi River headwaters. Water was extremely clean and warm. People were laying and playing in the river. Some big rocks were slippery though so be careful. Take the drive around the main road... beautiful scenery while driving inside the forest (on a safe paved road). The park itself is huge with everything available such as a campground, beach, fishing, hiking, biking, and etc.
Andy Zheng
Nice park. Took the boat tour and saw some eagles and loons as well as another tour group. Head waters of the Mississippi River so this is where it starts. Nothing outstanding, but very enjoyable and a great place for family. May have enjoyed it more if we walked on the trails, but didn't have enough time to do so. Black bear country though we didn't get to see one
Johnny Limpet
It is a very pretty place! I was drizzling when I was there, but I enjoyed it even so. The visitor's center has quite a few interactive exhibits. There's not really any strenuous hiking where I was, just easy trails.
Laurie Watson
Beautiful clean and outstanding state park! So many things to do. Even had church on Sundays for both Christian Catholic folks AND Christian General on Sunday. Except for a quick run to the grocery store & Good Life Cafe in Park Rapids, we never had to leave park grounds. Terrific family vacation!
Brittney Stager
My favorite state park in Minnesota so far. So beautiful, nice office, and lots to do. We rented kayaks and a pontoon durning our stay. We also visited the Mississippi headwaters and went on walks every day. Nice biking trail around the lake.
Rick
What a great park! Kept up very well and perfect place to spend a day hiking and exploring. The headwaters is magical and one must walk across the Mississippi river. The visitor center is well done along with the other buildings and gift shops arpund the park. Well worth the visit!
Duane Bartelson
We were at park rapids for other reasons but had time to spare so decided to go to Itasca... It had been abt 40 years or more since going there...everything man made had been replaced with newer updated structures. It is all very nice and up to date.. Abt the only thing that hasn't changed is the raw natural beauty of the whole area.. While there I was able to walk across the Mississippi headwaters without getting my feet wet... They have done a great job of laying the rocks out so us old-timers can say that we were able to go across along with the younger people...👍
Alex Thomson
Wide, groomed trails with well marked signage. Ticks are bad as soon as the snow is gone, but that's anywhere in the area.
Chris Haines
One of the most impressive state parks I've ever been to... bring some serious deet
Janet Ann Engelhart
We have taken our two sons to this peaceful park numerous times, since they were 4 and 5yrs old. We enjoyed the 12mile Headwaters Bike Rental trail this weekend. They are now 29 n 28, both of their spouses enjoyed the park as well! Great time, special memories made.
Stacie Eckerdt
This park is a must visit! The headwaters of the Mississippi River is an extremely important ecological habitat. The park provides an abundance of education about the area, its inhabitants and history. If you are at all interested in preserving a priceless fresh water source, or why it should be preserved, you will find what you need to know here.
Lots of great hiking trails, some old growth trees that were spared during the clear-cut of Minnesota's ancient forests, camping, swimming... A perfect place to get back in touch with Nature, Mother Earth or if you prefer to call it God's Creation.
Mandy Nguyen
Prior to this summer I had no clue Itasca State Park existed. It was truly an amazing place to visit especially being from Louisiana and being able to not only see, but swim in and walk across the Headwaters of the Mississippi River. As an added bonus we also rented kayaks to use on Lake Itasca and electric assist bikes to ride on the 18 mile trail around the lake. The hostel we stayed in made us feel like adults at summer camp! This is the perfect place for a family getaway and I would definitely like to return with mine someday.
TJ Harig
Beautiful state park. Lots to see and do. The park is huge. The have lots of bikes and boats for rent. They have a huge riverboat that gives tours. You could spend a week in the park and not take in everything it has to offer. It is difficult to get a reservation to stay here.
Sandy Ludwigson
If you enjoy nature, you will love this park. There are many walking trails, hiking paths, and for those who are less athletic, a scenic wilderness drive.
Jacqui C
Itasca Sports was warm, homey, and overall amazing. We rented a pontoon which was very reasonably priced, worked wonderful. The employee who helped us out and then back to dock was amazing! Lake was beautiful, warm and clean! Huge! Didn't know it was so big! Glad we rented a boat to check it out
Mike Bauer
For as popular as Itasca State Park is because of the Headwaters of the Mississippi you'd think they'd put a LOT more investment into visitor amenities, information, signage and so on! Trails are POORLY marked! Options for Park entrance are one day OR one year???? What the heck! How about a two day, 3 day or week option?? And the pass is tied to your vehicle license plate - many people have more than one vehicle and might not use the same vehicle each time they go to a State Park. Great place to visit but like anything government run its really poorly managed.
Gene Moore
Minnesota really puts alot of effort into keeping their parks top notch!
Jerry Schrank
17 mile scenic trail already closed for the winter otherwise it was a great visit. We came in from the north entrance and there was no indication the scenic route was closed.
michelle powell
Visited for the first time and was amazed by how many trails ans all the beauty! Gorgeous state park with so many things to do! I will be going back!
Rose Bittner
Nice park, but the main attraction is the Mississippi River headwaters. Do not visit this park without insect repellent, water shoes, and a towel. The gift shop at the headwaters opens later than the visitor center. So if you plan on an early arrival the gift shop and information center at the headwaters may not be open. They honor our veterans with free admission to the park.
Holland Atkinson
One of the best State Parks. It's great to see the headwaters of the Mississippi but what makes it even better is how well maintained the crossing point over the river is. Everyone enjoys a great picture of their kids or friends crossing the mighty Mississippi which is just a stream at this area. Fantastic wilderness and lots of camping options but make sure to book way in advance.
Matthew Smith
Picturesque forest, numerous trails, a Minnesota treasure.
Joan Williams
It was beautiful and very interesting about the Mississippi river. I was surprised how it started. Everyone could see the beginning of it.
pedro edmund
Great experience and highly recommend the remote sites, if you don't have a bee/wasp allergy. They are full of ground wasps.
I would not recommend the cart in sites. Some of these sites are closer to the road than the drive in sites, where the website may say 500 ft walk in reality it is more of an 50 ft walk.
Austin Denzer
I love this state park we go to it almost every year with my family and/or family friends
Michael Devereaux
Beautiful state park. We didn't have nearly enough time but will be coming back. There's so much more to do than wade through the Mississippi headwaters! I can honestly say that between the park's attractions and the visitor center ISP is better than some national parks I've been to.
Eden De S
So amazing and the fall color is spectacular!
John Walker
Wonderful place for getting away. Too bad a tree jumped out behind my van while backing up. Took the delightful lake cruise, and saw much wildlife. History of area native Americans and their food sources was fascinating. Nice gift shop. Wish the dining room had a more "area unique" menu.
Cody Huisken
One of my favorite spots in Minnesota! It is a beautiful state park with plenty of room to do whatever activity you like. Hiking, swimming, biking, canoeing, camping, kayaking, and more in the summer. Snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter. Seeing the headwaters of the Mississippi is always a great time. I highly recommend staying until sunset as there are some gorgeous reflections over the Lakes.
Kathy Schlosser
Beautiful anytime drive through the park and many activities in the Summer. Short and easy walk from parking area to head of Mississippi. Casual biking is made a bit difficult by the narrow roads and slightly hilly landscape...Some nice hiking trails, just wish more (level ones) were along the lake. Fall leaf-peeping is Wonderful from high atop the park's fire tower!
Update 9/15/2014.... New and safer biking trails just opened on south side of park... Yes!!! Thank you!
Nikki Whowantstakno
Wonderful place to take the family. Beautiful scenery. Lots of critters to see. $7 park entry for a day pass. Lots of trails to hike. Enough room to get lost from all the people in the park.
Jennifer Bradshaw
We love this park! There are many options for lodging, recreation, and learning. The staff and rangers are so friendly and helpful. We like the secluded camping sites. Plus they have ice cream and the Mississippi River headwaters.
Bekah Strait
So much to do with the family! We visted from Ohio and really enjoyed the trails and points of interest here. It's big enough that we didn't explore the entire park in 2 days!
Cheryl Aaserud
Went there with about 25 family members and had a great time. Leaving the park we had to stop vehicle because a black bear came out of the woods and stopped in the middle of the road and just stood there looking at us.
Gary Larson
Beautiful park with lots of miles of trails. Great hike in camping sites. Just remember to bring plenty of the strongest mosquito repellent you can find if going in the summer. They are so thick that you will have a cloud of them around you at all times. Along with the deer flies and black flies. I highly recommend mosquito beeter for the camp site.
Adam Otto
Nice camp grounds, beautiful lake
Julie Miller
Great camping and vacationing! Campgrounds are clean, the sites are close together, but are pretty private. Most campsites have electric hook up. Bike rental is easy and affordable to help you enjoy the pav d bike trails to the beach, and to all the historical sites including the Mississippi Headwaters. Our family also likes to browse in all the gift shops that each offer different merchandise. Douglas Lodge offers wonderful Minnesota meals! Our family enjoys gathering at Douglas Lodge for breakfast throughout the summer..and the coffee is great!
You'll love visiting Itasca State Park! It's a park full of beauty, history, learning, and fun!
Karl Causes Everything
Absolutely stunning scenery with plenty of things to do, fun for the whole family, even perfect for a solo trip away from home.
Kathrine Ferrie
Loved the bike trail around the park! Absolutely beautiful! Only one problem was with a single Ranger at the info center. We'd just completed the ride, there are no fountains outside and she wouldn't allow us to tell our bottles. The doors hadn't even been locked, yet.
P C
Winter hiking is beautiful and quiet here. Much more private viewing of the headwaters in winter. Beautiful suites and visitor's center. Lobby of visitor's center has two fireplaces and stays open 24/7 for warming up during or after late hikes.
Bjorn Bolstad
One of the best state parks in MN. Would highly recommend to anyone, tons of trails so you can keep coming back, Mississippi Headwaters, and a ton more! You will not be disappointed.
Ryan Keane
Great place, it is absolutely beautiful. The plaques all around the park are very informational. I went Oct 13 and it was a little chilly but it was perfect for hiking. The views are amazing and I would definitely go again.
Curt Eide
Beautiful state park that we visit every year for decades.
Heather Johnson
The Mississippi Headwaters area is amazing. The rest of the park is nice too. Great visitors center! My only complaint is that there should be signs prior to the attractions. We missed a few because of the lack of warning. Otherwise we plan to return in the future.
Alisha Stevens
Beautiful fall day, even with the rain!
Mandi Smith
Beautiful, insane amout of wood and deer ticks
Bernie McVey
Nice bike trail, leads directly with no Auto-interference.
TonynSue
Travelled a portion of the Mississippi River by boat when we were doing the Great Loop. Wanted to see the river from a different perspective. We followed the Great River Rd from La to Mn. We did the walk across the Mississippi at the park as well as taking in a few other sights. The Information Center was as it says, very informative! Would recommend this park to all!
John Haugen
Beautiful park with lots of camping and picnic spots. Paved bike trails for bikes as we as unpaved trails for hiking. The Mississippi headwaters area gets busy on weekends.
Greg Hansen
Lots too do, nice restaurants clean and fun?
Ryan Mathisrud
Probably the best State Park in MN. The headwaters of the Mississippi of course, but also tons to do. Several nice hiking trails, cabin rental, paved bicycle trails, motor and paddle boat rental, boat launch, and a decent restaurant. Great place to spend a day or 5 days.
rhubarbs
i went here a few years ago, the scenery is very beautiful and i highly recommend coming here at least once in your lifetime.
Dosu Kinuta
Bear, bugs, and leaches. Super beautiful. Only swim in the cold lakes.
Anne L
We had a beautiful early snow season hike today starting on the Deer Park Trail from Douglas Lodge and we peeped the Myrtle Lake camp sites; hope to return next summer to stay.
Teresa Brennan
Love this place!! So beautiful and peaceful, check it out for yourself!!
Hunt Blatz
I love riding my bike to here from Park Rapids, and then around the park. Nice boat cruise on a paddle boat. The lodge restaurant has good walleye, wild rice dishes, and milk shakes. Lots of hummingbirds around the lodge. Short hikes to the Mississippi headwaters, or the fire tower for a spectacular view.
Joan Williams
It was very pretty and interesting to see it . My first time there was glad I went
