Reviews of Afton State Park
Virginia VanKeulen
Nicely maintained State Park with riverwalk, forest and meadow trails for both hikers and bikers. The park has a couple of nice lookouts over the river and nice camping and picnic areas. There is also a public beach area that we didn't explore because dogs weren't allowed. We did explore the river and some cool driftwood in another beach area. Somewhat crowded on a Sunday afternoon in July. Not a lot of bugs.

Afton State Park is a great place for a family's day trip. We only had a couple hours, but got to hike a few miles and also saw the St Croix River from the overlook which was a very pleasant thing to do.
From the visitor center, the hiking trails toward south mostly don't have tall trees that provide shade. So it could be more challenging when it is hot. The trails toward north, however, have a lot of trees and are mostly covered by the shade of the trees, and therefore are easier for little kids.
Carrie Wilmot
At sunrise we took the southern river loop by first walking through the prairie to the yurts/cabins before descending and taking the river path back. The river is still high and all the little sandbars and beaches remain underwater. While skirting the prairie we saw many deer including our first fawn of the year. There was an osprey preening on an unused nesting platform and many kingbirds in the trees at the prairie edge. My greyhounds and I had the paths to ourselves until the climb back up to the car park. My favorite walk in the park still is the northern river loop where the bird watching is superlative through the backpacker's campground.

This is an excellent Ste Park!!
There are a lot of things to see around here as you walk the trails. It is a nice and peaceful place to be out and about in nature and you will enjoy the sights and sounds of everything around.
If you are like me and carry a camera around with you (or if you shoot pictures with your phone) there is no shortage of cool looking things to photograph.
It's a nice place to get away for the afternoon and really enjoy the outdoors.
Karen Folman
Afton State Park is magical and has many different landscapes to enjoy: Forrest, prairie, and beach. Pretty decent size hills for Minnesota if you need a more challenging hike and benches conveniently located if you need a rest or want to check out the gorgeous views.

Its nice to have the mn state park pass for my car. I wanted to hike the hiking club trail with my dad, and there were like 30 cars parked in front of the office, i went in and had my passport stamped and asked what the deal was, said there was no parking, wvery 5 cars that leave they let in 5 cars. I got parking in the back. And got a space right away. Because i knew to ask. I ran back to my car and got the spot before someone else. And i got it. Feels good to get the password on the hiking club trail. And spend a good day there with my dad. Good time to remember!

All the reviews are absolutely on point. What’s more is the staff that manage the park truly care about the job they do serving the public. We had a completely flat tire when we returned from two amazing nights camping. Though we didn’t take Nick up on the offer to help change the wheel for a spare, it was nice to know he cared enough to leave a note with the office # and his cell #. Cheers Nick!!!

Afton State Park is a wonderful place for a stroll on your own or with family. There are a couple of large picnic areas with grills, camping, the St. Croix River to swim in (though there's no lifeguard) and lots of great walking trails. My family and I have enjoyed this park for many years and throughout all seasons.
Aaron Kornaus
Wonderful park with miles of trails of varied difficulty and biomes. Arguably home to the best beach within an hour of the Twin Cities. All tent camping is hike in only (about a mile hike) or camper cabins and yurts are also available.
Casi B
Gorgeous, well-maintained and well-marked trails, and open to both snowshoeing/hiking and cross country skiing for the winter. Trail signage is clear and easy to follow, and the park offers gorgeous views of the river from several locations.
Mason Y
Peaceful and nice hike. Great area and near the river, but not much scenery. Just woods, mushrooms, prairie and well maintained trails! Perfect for picnic
Josh
Overall I had a decent visit hiking here. I only had time to hike the trails in the southern part of the park. The trail portions outside the woods were wide enough for side by side conversation and the parts of the trail near or inside the woods were single file. I visited in November, between the Fall color and white snow, when the aesthetics were rather bland.
Christine Cartwright
Love that the south trail is all along the river. The signage isn't great but if you have a GPS map, you will be fine. Weekends are pretty busy. The trails are not challenging wirh the exception of a few steep hills and well maintained.
Jason Munson
Beautiful park. Be aware that most of the trails are not circular, so wherever you walk you'll need to turn around and take the same path back. It's fine just something to know. Trails of various levels (none very difficult) and nice picnic area. Lots of parking compared to some parks.
Carey Goedel
Beautiful State Park full of amazing views, excellent hiking trails, great bird watching and wonderful staff!
Celeste Fisher-Dale
From peaceful prairie, to wild woods, and a relaxing river stroll, Afton State Park is the perfect spot to soak up some St. Croix River views or spend long weekend exploring and camping. Stop at the Park Office to find out about the birding and other activity kits available.
The trails are peaceful, even when the parking lot is full. At sunset the 2.2 mile Prairie Loop Trail is the spot to be as the pastels of nature glow together in the golden light. You'll find a long stretch of soft sandstone wash beach along the North and South River Trail which is almost perfectly level as it parallels the St. Croix River. The trail to the beach from the parking lot and along the river is smooth gravel and perfect for biking, which is only allowed on some sections of trail in the park. The Deer Valley and Trout Brook Trail Loops provide some bonus elevation challenges, a sneak peek at Afton Ski Resort, and a quiet seclusion that is surprising to find in an area that is so close to the big city hustle and bustle.
With the variety of camping options; 4 cabins, 2 yurts, a canoe in site, 1 wall tent, 28 backpack sites, and 2 group camps, there is a convenient camping option for everyone. Be mindful, however, all state park campsites require a reservation and the yurts are usually booked out far in advance. You could get lucky with a last minute reservation and score the wall tent or a backpack site on weekdays but they're usually full on the weekends.
Afton State Park is a Minnesota gem and if we remember to Leave No Trace packing out what we carry in, respecting the trails and wildlife, it will stay a pristine natural area for generations of enjoyment to come!
Besa Schweitzer
Nice place for a walk. Most people were going to swim in the river but we hiked in the other direction.
Adam Morgan
This is a great state park for some casual hiking on trails. The prairie area is beautiful (make sure to bring sunscreen for your neck) with smaller and bigger loops depending on what you're looking for. There's a beach area that I've seen at both high and low water levels; it's pretty both ways with some potential space for activities. The park is what you want it to be. Might want to bring some boots after it rains. 5 stars from me!
Katey Grof
This is a great park! I took my 4 and 6 year old with me and we biked, hiked, and swam. If you're biking with kids, I highly recommend just biking from the main road to the visitors centers. The path is very broken asphalt but doable. The path after that is very hilly. My kids are avid bikers but we walked a lot of it. We hiked markers T to V and the observation point. Left our bikes at T. It worked perfectly!
Beach is gorgeous but it is an active and steep 1/2 mile walk. I used our jogging stroller to haul our stuff down to the river. Sand is amazing. River is rocky but the water was perfect!
false
Beautiful park with lots space to socially distance and still enjoy the park. The secret beach is our new favorite place to go with the family.
Adding to this review as my family and I rented a camper cabin this weekend. They were fun little cabins for the family to stay in and explore the park. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quick getaway close to the city
Kerry Ross
First time here, what a beautiful place to hike and enjoy the river. Looking forward to trying some snowshoeing here and mire hikes!
Patrick Ritchie
Nice day park. Took a hike on the Hiking Passport Trail. Not difficult. Water level was high but didn't interfere with the hiking trail.
Kristen Harrington
Such a lush magical place for a hike. Lots of different terrains
Lou Lou
Wow wow wow! Huge park! Where to begin... This park has skiing, mountain biking, camping, downhill skiing. The views are stunning looking out at the river and at the rolling hills!
Bruce Youngquist
Although Afton can be busy on nice weekends (it's a 30 min. drive from St Paul) it offers many different hiking and picnic areas. Hike along the St Croix, then up to the top of the bluffs, where you encounter deep woods, pine forest and restored prairie. Stop and look closely at the wildflowers to see the native bees and butterflies going about their business. Stop in the woods to listen for interesting bird songs.
Chelsea Kaminski
It was a nice park. I can't believe how active the deer are here ! I came early in the morning!
Rich Whitney
This is a wonderful park. Great and challenging hiking trails, many are uphill both directions. If you want a great place to experience some Minnesota nature, head to Afton and take a hike, have a picnic, enjoy the riverfront, or just sit in the sun or shade and relax.
Rachel Vander Weit
really nice well kept trails! there’s a beach, camp grounds, unpaved trails, hills, and lookouts!
Michael Gauer
Great park. Nice, well marked trails.
John Walker
This is a nice state park. They have lot of trails with quite a bit of elevation change since they a right next to the St. Croix River.
Molly Pudwell
Lots of trails to pick from. Nice swimming beach too.
Chris Matz
This is quite a large park. The trails are very nice, with especially good signage. There were some amazing fall colors.
This park was super popular on the Saturday that we visited, moreso than we usually like.
Amy Fisher
Afton has the river, trees, and prairies all of which are beautiful in different ways as the seasons change. The campground is great - quiet with well-spaced, mostly shady sites and convenient firewood and solar water pump. The vault toilets and porta potties were well-stocked. There's enough shoreline for easy social distancing. I've come 4 times and still haven't hit most of the hiking trails.
Steve Stai
Great park. Various trails trending from easy to moderate. Well taken care of. Plenty of signs to let you know where you are.
Leah
Love this place. Awesome trails and good rock hunting!!
Najam Qureshi
One of the best parks for a day hike around the metro. Well kept, clean. I would recommend getting of the trails and hike up hills. Paved trails are mostly flat, so I would recommend getting off the trails.
Kelly Savage
One of my favorite hiking spots! Beautiful views of the St Croix river valley and prairie lands. Hike or bike on various trails.
James Berkenpas
Beautiful, well-maintained park! Lots of hiking opportunities along the river, bluffs, and wildflowers. Even found a few agates on the beach! Definately not the most well-known state park but a great getaway without having to go too far from the cities.
Raye Koehler
This park has cabins and yurts for people to stay in. It is along the St. Croix River and has a pretty view. The trails are nice and long and you can go there multiple days and have plenty to see and explore. Check out Selma’s, nearby in the town of Afton. They have geocaching, if you like to do that.
Jeri Rasmussen
Afton State Park was an awesome place for camping. They have a nice little set up and the camp spots are pretty private. The water pump was broken so we were happy they put up plenty of signage and put it on their website so we knew to pack water ahead of time. We hiked a little more than 14 miles and there's plenty to see. Tons of flowers, animals, water and open prairie. Would recommend this place for people of all ages. Just a heads up that camp grounds are a mile in at least and there is plenty of uphill on the way there.
Jim
I recently purchased a parks pass. For the state of MN was $35 and its good for a year. If you don't want the pass on the car window you can also get a license plate.
So since I had my Pass I was able to drive right in no wait. I was surprised there's a small lot at the front of Afton and then you wind back into the park about 6 minutes I guess along this curve road. I'll have to do more exploring and give you a full run down. But it's very spacious and has amazing trails. They have tons of parking lots and today it being spring 89 degrees and coming out of covid the park was packed.
When I say it was packed I mean nearly all parking lots were full. But this park is so large and has so many trails in all directions that you don't see anyone. I really enjoyed this. It was a great experience.
They have amenities bathrooms and water fountains. Paved trails and unpaved paths. Picnic tables and benches both on the path and off to the side. There's an interpretive praire grass tour that tells you the importance of prairie grasses and the exotic plants and animals that live in it.
I'll definitely have to go back and share more photos after I've explored that area as well.
Gregory Wachman
Afton State Park is a very versatile park. When I go with the family we will usually eat lunch up on the bluff or hike down to the swimming area along the river.
I've also enjoyed a couple light backpacking trips here. The backpacking campground is perched on a prairie at the top of the bluffs about a mile from the parking lot, making it a pretty doable family endeavor if you have the right equipment and a couple strong backs. I brought my two year old one year and it was a great experience. The sites have enough space that you don't feel like you're surrounded by people.
It's also a popular spot for trail running and hiking due to the large trail network. I've come here many times this year to ramp up my hiking distances and get some hill work in. I love getting here early in the morning before they open the gates, parking up by the entrance and dropping down into the Deer Valley Loop. I have usually been able to observe some wildlife on my early morning trips, including deer, wild turkeys, and a possum.

This is a nice state park near our home. It has lot of nice camping spots, hiking trails, the beach! You can leave the main hiking areas and the river side trail to hike up to the prairies and it would feel so peaceful. I saw few people while i was there, looked like i was the only one walking around in that area.
Also you can get maps and park guides and entrance. This park has clean bathrooms and some really great view areas. There are some challenging trails once you go up and further from the prairie. I enjoyed hiking them! You will come across many wild flowers and plants. Along the river there are lots of picnic tables as well. All of the trails are really well marked and it's easy to follow their system if you know how to read a trail map and where you want to go.
I have seen so many deers while hiking around here. Also make sure to pay attention to signs and directions at trail intersections or you will get lost easily!
Art Arsenault
Great park with a ton of hiking trails and options
Diane Reinking
This is a wonderful park to go hiking at. It has picnic areas, hiking you can horseback ride, fish and they also have volleyball nets and horseshoes. There is at a visitor center and plenty of bathrooms.
JF H
Very nice park to go hiking, walking, or jogging. If you need some alone time this is a nice state park. One day pass is $7. There are some beautiful areas in this park. Remember you can always jump in the river after a good hike.
Chelsie GawneMark
Great state park along the St Croix River! This is the place to take your family to see the autumnal leaves. Beautiful trails of various types: Prairie, wooded, bluffs, with. Only $7/per car to visit for the day. You could spend the entire day here. Closer to other attractions and cities.
Aaron N
What a great chunk of land! Great views from the hill tops to the rivers edge. A very diverse park with grass lands, heavy wooded areas, to the rivers edge. Very clean trail systems and camping on the hill is great! Except for the cutting of the wood and walking it to camp. Maybe a wheel barrow could be kept there?
Todd Lemke
Great get away not too far from Twin Cities. We hiked the back trails on a Tuesday and didn't see anyone until we were closer to the river. Those trails were pretty busy but could social distance. The park visitor center is closed but restrooms were open. Bring your own toilet paper. Some trims have running water or mud crossing them due to how wet it's been. Close to Hastings.
David Woehler
Great park, beach is a walk but means it's less crowded perfect hike anytime of the year, bike ski erc
Oleh Prodan
This Park is absolutely gorgeous with plenty of area to hike, bike and be one with nature. Driving back I found this little cabin camping area, and biking some of the trails alongside the river was breathtaking. Alot of the area was flooded when I got there because of heavy rain. Moreover, the biking trails ventured more towards the golf area so be mindful of which trail you are on. Overall, this place is great and highly recommend.
Zhanna Poltavets
My favorite place for hiking, I can spend in Afton State park all day. A lot of good unpaved trails, great for running. Also, in ASP you can rent a cabin or yurt, or just camp there with your own tent.
Ashley Mitchell
A fun place for a fall hike! We brought our toddler, infant, and dog. Many of the trails are paved and all are well-marked. You can make a hike of any distance by choosing your own route to explore.
m vh
Wonderful place to explore for anyone with an inkling of wanderlust for the outdoors. Whether you are a cyclist, runner, hiker, camper, or walker, this park has it all. Many miles of trails ranging from strenuous to easy and open field to heavily wooded forest. Great views of the St. Croix and ample room to grill and picnic. Fresh water and bathrooms are nearby as well as maps of the area.
Total milage differs, so please take a look at the map posted in the pictures. Definitely worth a visit!
Stephanie Holt
This was one of the most beautiful parks we've visited. Tons of nice trails to explore with amazing views. There is a lot of wild life, flowers and different types of trees throughout.
Tip: if you are backpacking to your campsite no need to haul a ton of water up that steep trail. There is a fresh water pump up by the campsites to refill your camel packs and water bottle. Theres also 2 vault toilets and firewood up there for campers with an honor system box. Be prepared to cut wood to firepit size however. The park provides a saw horse and saws. Long pieces of wood are thin and easy to saw through.
Also, there are raccoons at night so make sure you put all your food away.
Andrew
A great park to go a hike with varied terrain from flat to hilly. When exploring this hikers paradise be sure to check out the views of the river valley and different wildlife around you!
Kevin Rowell
This is a beautiful State Park. Great hiking trails of all skill levels and great views. Located close to the Twin Cities it is an easy drive but you feel far away from it all.
Dan (D A N I . R A U ß)
I hadn't been here in years and despite some of the beaches having higher than normal water, you can tell the state is slowly reinvesting back into its state parks. The trail markers were clear to read, updated maps, updated waypoint posts.... lots of updates since I was last here - including free life jackets for kids at the beach. Did a quick 3.6 mile loop to the north scenic overlook and then back down through the backpack campgrounds.
Diane T
We loved camping at Afton. We stayed overnight in the White Pine cabin, and the experience went super smoothly. We showed up around 7 pm, so the center was already closed. The key to the cabin was left in the door for us. There was firewood available in the cabin for $6 a bundle, and a picnic table and a fire pit out front.
R M.
We went today for a picnic and its was so beautiful! Very clean park and the view of the river was very nice. We loved watching the speed boats go by and all the cute dogs walk by. After our picnic we went on the hiking trails and it was stunning. We took off our shoes to go in the river but the water was ice cold. Cant wait yo to back in the summer time
Jesse M
A quick trip from the cities, I was able to enjoy one of the camping yurts. Amazing wood fire warmth and fresh snow made for a great stay. ❄️❄️❄️
Adam Janecke
Probably some of the best hiking trails near the twin cities. There is actually some elevation in the walking trails and you get to go through prairies, the woods, and probably a mile or so along the river. Also, you can walk the shoreline which is better than the trail. They also have some great events during the winter as well, like Afton Lights.
David
This park is a hidden gem of the Minnesota state parks system. There are a surprising amount and variety, from open prairie to wooded trails, of trails for hiking, running, biking, and horseback riding. In the winter, these trails can also be used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Afton also offers a surprising number of options for camping, including 28 backpacking sites, 1 canoe-in site, 2 drive-in group campgrounds, 4 cabins, and 2 yurts (which are more like round cabins than what one might think of as a yurt). Perhaps due to the location, this is also a very quiet park in the evening traffic-wise, which makes for good sleeping conditions. It's also not a terribly crowded park, and the group sites are a considerable distance from the tent sites.
When I stayed there a few weekends ago, the only source for potable water was the one up by the backpacking sites; the other two had a lot of sediment. There is also an issue of accessibility. The main path to the hiking trails leads down a long stairway that would be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues and impossible for someone in a wheelchair. There is a more sloped path available, but it takes a much longer route to get to the same locations.
Otherwise, this is a great park, with someone for everyone.
Davette Kohnen
Possibly my favorite near-to-the-metro State Park. Gorgeous short trails with both overlooks and river access. The swimming area was magically beautiful. We saw many Bald Eagles.
Kimara Bonitto Realtor-HomeSmart
Beautiful scenery! Love it!
Micheala Boone
Went camping early March with the dog. First site we had booked was flooded out and awful so we called the office and asked if anything else was available. The second campsite was also flooded but much better. The saws they provide are rusty and old, prepare to bring your own saw like we did.
Jack Stover
This is a great spot! There are plenty of hiking trails with good variety. It's a little hilly but not terrible (and there are easy trails if you want to avoid the hills). They have an official swimming beach (and another sandy area toswim as well). When the river is high, the beach is fully submerged, but that's to be expected. There is also good hiking in the wintertime, and you see a lot of wildlife yearlong. They have really nice campsites as well (including yurts), but be prepared to carry everything in.
Wendy Galan
I want to recognize this men, John Morris from Afton State Park he made our walk very enjoyable today, he spend time with our walking group ( 20 Hispanic women) and shared kind words with us. He deserves a Rise! he is the reason he are going back to this park. He made us feel welcome and shared so much information with us. We need more people like him in our parks.
Wyatt W. Penke
Great place to stay, only 3 state sites with a Yurt. Nice swim beach and picnic areas. Great park for Winter activities as well.
Christi Neaton
Love this park! Lots of trail, plenty of parking and the bathrooms are open.
Azizullah Quraishi
Less than an hour drive from Minneapolis this is a good get away. As expected it has many walk trails. Highlight of this location is beach which is nice for swim and sun bath. But beach isn't motor vehicle accessible so expect 5-10 min walk. Campgrounds are nearby beach and require further walk.
Jeni Marks
We made the trip to Afton specifically for the beaches along the river, and they certainly didn't disappoint. Said beaches, lots, and trails were maintained & clean. There was a roped swimming area that would be a great family beach. Other slightly more secluded coves provide some privacy, as well (although if you're averse to seaweed, you should stick to the swimming beach). You may want to bring some bug spray, however; the biting flies were a bit of a nuisance all afternoon.
Lisa Stewart
Awesome first time experience and wish we had more time there. Spacious and well maintained! Definitely recommend the trail that runs along the St Croix. Saw my very first pheasant too!
Deborah Rasmussen
This is a beautiful park! My visit was for an overnight tent camping trip; I was happily surprised that the sites were well marked and private, even though they were in the same general area.
k wildlife
Beautiful park with rolling hills, nice beach, cool stream to play in and right on the st croix river
Susan Bacigalupo
This was a great find. The beach is great very sandy just a little bit of rockiness at the edge of the shore and after that it's just a great place to go for a swim and relax. There is an access fee...it IS a state park. We bought an annual state park pass-35 dollars.
Kathy Knight
Beautiful park with lots of trails of different lengths. The parking lots were full but the park is large and the trails did not feel crowded. Good place to take a dog on a leash.
Beau Gray
Came with 2 kids and 3 adults to do some light hiking/walking. March is an awkward month for this since the trails are melty, snow packed, and can be slippery. Parts of the trails were blocked off with caution tape. I would like to go back either during mid-winter for snow shoeing or for hiking during the summer/fall. There are beautiful views of the river to be had. Lots of fun puddles to splash in.
Nikita Steinwall
Great hiking trails and walking paths! Always a beautiful and well kept park. Kids loved to run the prairie trails.
Dylan Pedersen
Went to the beach there about a week ago to visit with a friend from college I hadn't seen in person in almost 3 years. The only thing was that the daily admission price on the website was different than what it actually was.
Andrew “MrPencil” Westberg
Hiked 3 differnt parks today. This one has multiple trails crossing each other. Signage is OK but you have to pay attention to the letters on the signs or you could end up on the wrong trail. Got a lot birds species do to the water, woods prarie combo.
Chris Ross
Temperatures are perfect in May for walking or biking. Picnic tables and views of the St Croix River. Camper cabins and even a couple of Yurts available.
Stacie Leppert
Beautiful, was not a fan of the stairs to get down to the beach and back up in 90 degree weather BUT it's very pretty down that way!
Kris L
Always well kept, lots of trails to explore, great place to take your dogs and great backgrounds for photo sessions!
Greg Eastlund
Beautiful scenery with lots of challenging trails and more than a few steep inclines make this a unique treasure of the Twin Cities area.
Lisa Jandt
Great park to go to. Very easy to get off on the trails away from the crowds.
randy nelson
Afton is my go-to staple for nature immersion, I love Afton State Park it's my closest natural "sanctuary" to the cities. I enjoy going when it's cold and on weekdays when less humans are around.
Luke Gorski
This park is kind of divided into four quarters. If you want the quiet trails, you should hike in the southwest quarter of the park (deer valley loop), if you are staying in a cabin, the southeast quarter is probably where you will do most hiking. The northwest quarter is very enclosed with the trout brook loop having high hills and bluffs all around, and the northeast part of the part has the best views. All the intersections are marked with a letter or two, so you will know which one you are at by looking at a trail map. Great views of the St. Croix River.
Jonathan Mauriala
Great park with well marked signage. Lots of terrain variety from the hills to the forest to the rivers to the open plains. Many different difficulties to hike and distances to go. Several bathroom facilities throughout the park and trails. Bird feeders by the visitors center.
Stacy Welle
It was a perfect area to get away and be in nature and walk near water in no, while still being fairly close to home. The trails are clearly marked and the hiking is not overly difficult, although there are a few places with lots of stairs. You do need a state park pass, so be aware of that. I have gotten plenty of use of my annual State Park pass at Afton State Park among all of the other beautiful State Parks in MN. Once winter comes, she of the trails turn into skiing and cross country skiing, but there is still plenty to hike and do.
Brandon Gerlach
Great Park! Awesome staff! These days, expect the backpack campground to be loud. Firewood isn't split. Bring your own saw or hatchet!
Tucker Lundquist
Best beach in the entire twin cities area. This river front beach is huge, no matter how busy it is there is always an open spot if you keep walking. The prairies here have been restored beautifully. The ravines have almost zero buckthorn and lots of native plants. Probably won't see much animals but the trails and beach are worth coming here.
Bhaargav Sriraman
Great spot to take your family for a picnic. The park is pretty big and if you're adventurous, you'll have lots of paths to explore. The experience changes depending on the amount of time you spend here.
Urvashi Desai
Loved the park beach. Its quiet and the water is shallow. The viewpoint on the way to the beach shows a beautiful view. Would definitely go again.
Joseph Dummann
Nice state park that isn't too far from the cities, I wish they had more hiking trails though.
Eric Sinakhone
This trail is my new favorite prairie hike close to home. Technically, it's part of Afton State Park, but you can't access it from the main entrance (70th and St Croix). Instead, this entrance is hidden away up the road at 50th and St Croix. The trails lead to expansive, gently rolling hills and it is stunning!
Laura Kohn
Great trails and well maintained! Loved skiing here!
Duane Lakoduk
Nice day for a hike. Saw Bald Eagles and a large flock of Sandhill Cranes.
Trish LN
Always like visiting. Nice trails, plenty of space at the beach so it doesn't feel crowded. The yurts and camper cabins are also really fun.
Planty McPlanterson
This has always been one of my favorite parks. I used to live in the Woodbury area and since leaving, I still make the short trek outside Minneapolis to get to this beautiful area. It’s along the river, and wonderful views are abundant. There is a great learning center to learn about the wildlife, and plenty of fun beaches and picnic tables to relax at. Nearby there are wonderful little farms that offer apple picking and seasonal produce. During the winter, you can enjoy the park, and/or make it over to Afton Alps for some snowboarding. I enjoy the winding trails that keep you feeling isolated and make it feel like a lower traffic park.
Robert Dahlstrom
Well used and maintained trails with just enough solitude for this close to the city.
Natalie Kramme
Great state park to hike, fish or picnic at! Great views of St croix river.
Freya Junot
A fun hiking location! Great trails and right on the St Croix.
Alex Awaijane
One of my very favorite hiking spots! Fall time is probably the best! Great for pictures.
Brandon Johnston
We did a hike-in camping trip to test our gear for a longer trip later. The park is very clean. I like that there isn't any drive-in camping. The sites are spread out and we rarely heard or saw anyone. We saw several deer and turkeys as well as a small bull snake. This park feels more remote than it is.
Chelsea Holcombe
Beautiful park. Great for outdoor activities and beautiful scenery! Never too crowded in the summer.
Leymer Rodriguez
I went with my family and friends, we felt in love, We walked around 4 hours and the beach is special.
Chris
Nice park. It was our first time visiting. We had to get out of the car and pay at the entrance. There were signs saying you can pay online to avoid waiting. I will check that option out before we go next time. We came to the park to hike. The trails were nice and I was glad I picked up a trail map. Go down by the river and walk. It is sandy and goes a long way. There were plenty of bathrooms and a water fountain in the visitor center.
Lee Witte
First impression is this is a great park. Late October hike was great. Nice hills to hike with a clean stream and view of the river.
Aaron Bolduc
Great hiking/snowshoeing trails. Many miles of trails, and great views.
nani jyotheswar
Very good place for hiking , fishing with beautiful St Croix river passing through next to it. Fall is nice time to be here.
Shannon Motzko
A great place to spend the afternoon especially in the fall with the leaves changing colors next to the St Croix River and Selmas ice cream shop is right up the street
Jason Hegland
I backpacked in mile off of black parking lot best campground I've been to clean very professional lots of deer lots of animals
Lindsey Schreiner
If youre looking for some nice easy hikes then Afton is the place for you! There are beautiful paved and natural trails throughout the state park. They also have tent and cabin camping options. If you go on an evening walk you might be lucky enough to see some deer up close! We got to see 8 really close to the trail which was a cool experience. I look forward to camping here in the future as I have never camped before but this would be the perfect spot to!
Rebekah Mitchell
Nice park, lots of hills , so I recommend caution for bikers .
S L Moss
Great place to hike - easy/moderate to difficult/challenging hiking trails (look for signs).
Alekhya Donepudi
Loved the hiking trails here!! Right time, right weather and nature made our visit to Afton a beautiful one. We were also able to spot a deer 🦌😍. Definitely coming back!!!! …
Sen Bilverglate
Afton Alps is basically where I live during the winter and during the summer I come visit Afton state park alot as i wait for the return of ski season. Definately go to the river, but spending time up in the praries is even more fun in my opinion, especially during golden hour. Remember to pick up you trash!!!! Thanks!
Carol Mori
Beautiful park. Love the scenery with all the snow.
Angie W
Lovely state park, the cabins are very private and well kept. Area is beautiful with lots of hiking trails to explore
Farhan Siddiqui
Amazing day trip experience with BBQ lake
Sunny Tsai
Love this place and we were lucky to see two eagles!
Summer Xiong
Great clean park. Wish there more parking area so we can enjoy certain parts of the park without having to walk so far. But it's so a great place to hike and enjoy nature.
Paul Backstrom
We come out here every year to rest and relax. The camper cabins are awesome. The trails are well taken care of and nicely laid out. If u want some time away from the cities and can't afford anything up north come out here.
Joyce Kovacs
Stayed in one of the yurts. Very cute, clean, sleeps 8. There are 3 sets of bunks with safety railings, one fold out bed - queen size. No electricity. Large picnic table, 2 separate benches, fireplace, wood available on site for $6, nice trails to hike, table and chairs inside. Lots of birds! Lovely place. $50/night!!
Joseph
Went camping here for just two days and one night, really beautiful park with great campsites and fireflies at night. Went swimming in the St. Croix river, just a word of caution however, the river is very rocky and can cut your skin (especially feet) pretty badly. Other than that, awesome park altogether and super relaxing place to chill out with family/friends.
Ariane Laxo
Afton is a great park year round, with miles of trails through the woods, prairie, and along the river. Get your state park pass and make many trips year round!
Kylie White
This is a lovely park with plenty of good hiking. Go down to the St. Croix to get a goid look at Wisconsin.
Danielle Tschida
Wonderful park, wonderful trails!! They have paved, rock and grass trails with a little beach and a dock!
Nolan Goodman
Best park around for hiking! Beach is great too
Mike Pilgrim
Great time everytime I go there with my dog domino. I went down the stairs and up the big hill to save my knees this round.
Amy Young
Beautiful park. Many trails with varying landscapes.
Emily Sanders
Beautiful day spent walking around as much of this state park as possible.
Went on the Saturday during Memorial Day weekend and it wasn't too crazy busy. Left some of the more main routes and went up by the prairie areas - it was so beautiful and peaceful up there! Passed a few trail runners and ran into people a few times but not very often. Mostly felt like I had the park to myself. Found lots of lovely wildflowers and there are big lilac bushes at the entrance of the park. Level walking in the prairies but then there are a few trails that have some more up and down hill hiking. As I got closer to the river there were definitely more people. There were a couple of good view points as well as many places to stop and rest at benches if needed. By the river there are lots of picnic tables as well. All of the trails are really well marked and it's easy to follow their system to know how to read a trail map and where you want to go. 10 miles of "hiking" at this park for the day and saw 2 bald eagles perched on the telephone line at the park entrance. I'll be back!!
Scott Lovenberg
So clean and well maintained. Watch out for that walk from the parking lot though. It's a doozie if you're not expecting to spend your first half hour walking uphill with a pack.
Nina Bukowski
Fantastic park! The trails are well groomed and well marked. Day pass for parking is only $7 (and it goes to the park so don't be too upset). There are trails for all sorts of hiking (easy, medium, hard) and it takes you through all types of landscapes- river/beach/bluff, swamp, woods, prairie etc. They have great little fire pit areas and picnic area if you're looking to stay for the entire day. 10/10, would recommend.
Jullinne Mickley
Saw alot of deer. Even saw some does and their little fawns just awesome. Got some pictures of them. Nice day trip. Lots of hikers.
Terry Liptak
Great place to hike with variable terrain.
Adam Albrecht
Beautiful views along the water with plenty of stroller accessable trails to walk.
Kdr
Park ranger Nick is the most amazing person ever! He gave us a ride to our camp site after a 45 mile bike ride there & brought us firewood. Outstanding service and incredibly friendly people plus it’s a beautiful park! Highly recommend!
Laura Rose
Beautiful place for a hike on a gorgeous day. Nice bathrooms near parking lot (heated and clean). Staff at the gate were very friendly.
Jacob Schaller
Nice diverse state park good trails and picnic areas
John Schultz
Best hiking around. You can do flattish or hills. The dog can splash in Trout Brook or the St Croix River. Eagles, vultures and in spring a yellow chat ( a smallish bird).
I like parking off of 50th street rather than the main parking lot.
Ashley Sinniah
We stayed in the wall tent for one night. It was surprisingly spacious with two twin sized wooden cots. The are moveable so you could put them together if desired. The is enough room between them to put a regular size pack and play and have walking space around it. the wall tent itself is covered with canvas that extents over a porch type area which includes an accessibility ramp. A fire pit, pick-nic table with chair pull-up and three benches provide ample sitting. The grounds were clean and private enough while still being a quick walk to water and toilet although in different directions. We packed out our trash. The recylcing was close but never saw a dumpster. Reserving online was simple, wood bundles were 6 dollars a piece at the park entrance. We are a young couple who are use to backpacking and car camping. The wall tent was a nice way to return to camping with our now one year old.
Gretchen Gosnell
Afton offers a lot of variety. It has challenging elevation or leisurely trails through the prairie. They have yurts and cabins and a great selection of backpacking camps sites about a mile in from the parking lot. There is a swimming beach (St Croix River) too. This is a park I go back to again and again.
Ryan L
This is an awesome park! Close to the cities with great views of the river. Some of the hikes are a bit steep but definitely manageable for the average person. Great place to get out and enjoy nature.
Dan Zunker
Great views and lots of trail options.
Toby S
Great park with fun trails good hills and lots of pretty scenery. Lots of fun for just a short trip outside the city.
Steven Zolen
Big fan of the walking paths. Challenging and easy paths to walk. Then of course the views. Over the river, woods, plains. Feels like the park has a but of everything. I camped in their backpack in sites and it's definitely worth the hike.
Renae C.
We (family of 6 - youngest is 2 months) came to hike and picnic. There are so many trails! It's actually easy to miss your turn, if you aren't careful. It's definitely a great place to get a little lost. I loved that some of the trails that are marked as easy for those a little less mobile, but there's plenty for those able to do more. Everyone at the visitor center was very nice and helpful, too.
Dan
Afton state park offers some beautiful hiking trails. I enjoy the trail that follows the river to the north boundary with some invigorating ascents. The further you travel from the visitor center the fewer people you see.
Kirsten Dutton
Great trails, not very busy
Mike Drinane
With prairie, forested bluffs, and river, Afton has great scenery and fantastic hilly trails.
Anne Ulrich
I didn't like Afton State Park as much as the other state parks reasonably close to the Twin Cities. The views aren't that great, and while there is hiking, it's frankly kind of boring. Also, the trails aren't well marked or well mapped. I didn't try boating or swimming, but plenty of other people did and seemed happy enough. I didn't have any issues with parking.
Misi Stine
Great hiking trails but be prepared for walking up/ down steeper inclines and hiking up and down bluffs. Some trails are considered strenuous.
Mark Okern
Gorgeous park. Be ready to hike, unless you are group camping at a cabin not much can be accessed by car, but for the rest of us, grab your pack and enjoy some of the best river valley views around.
Campsites for backpackers are on top of a ski hill. If you're not in shape (I'm not), it's a bit of a slog. But it's worth it.
Robert
Plenty of hiking trails. Some are easy to moderate level. It's busy, but nothing that spoils your visit. Some trails are along the river Bank. Is next to Afton Alps ski area with cross country trails.
Mary Dollins
Great state park. It has a surprising number of hiking trails and they have clearly marked signs for summer and winter hiking. There are places for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and horse riding. Many hikes go along the river and have nice views. Most of the trails seem pretty easy and family friendly or good for trail running.
Mario Marín Richmond
This park has one of the best set of trails in the State. Nice artificial beach along the river. Visiting Stillwater after a nice walk in the park seals the deal.
Reed H
The park features great views of the St Croix River. There are many hiking trails to chose from. However, I would not recommend biking in the park. The trails are very steep and often a little congested with people. There are other good biking options in the surrounding area outside of the park. The park does offer a swimming beach. There is a dock, however it requires hauling a kayak/canoe down a steep, paved path to reach it. Overall, I would recommend this park to anyone who likes to get out and hike. The park is also in a very convenient location, not far from the Twin Cities.
Lindsey Foley
Beautiful state park. The river is gorgeous in the fall and there are numerous great vantage points. The trails to get down to the river are challenging and steep. Great for if you want to get in a work out, but not great for strollers (although it is paved on the bike path) or young legs. I would go back, but not until my kids are much older.
Youness Himmi
Awesome trails for biking and hiking, good scenic over views, even got to see a few horses up close.
A few paths close for a few weeks when the river is abnormally high.
Very highly recommend
Dave Busch
I've been coming to this park for about the last 35 years. Its changed a little bit, but still great for hiking.
Simon Anderson
Beautiful state park, great hiking. Lots of birds and other wildlife, including wild deer roaming the park. Bring water and bugspray!
Sam Howe
This is a great place it you want to spend time outdoors, go for a hike, have a picnic, swim, camp, or ride a bike on paved or unpaved trails. There are miles of trails and enough scenery for any occasion. There are hardly any pesky bugs, and it's generally an uncrowded area. It is open all year round, and is just as fun in the winter as it is in the summer, spring or fall. You can bring your pets, and it's enjoyable for everyone. There are plenty of options to explore from all sun, all shade, or some of both. You can walk through the woods, by the river, through and around meadows, and all sorts of other places. From a relaxing walk in the park, to an exciting on or off road bike adventure, or just a peaceful picnic, this place is so kinds of fun.
Gary Larson
Spent a weekend camping in one of the hike in sites there. Otherwise than the sites being a little to close together, loved it. Great trails for hiking. Had our dogs with and they had a blast playing in the river as well. Definitely will be going back for more hiking and camping.
Chris Freeman
Great state park close to the Twin Cities. A lot of various trails from prairie to deep forest trails from flat to elevation changes up and down the bluffs. Good picnic areas, nice visitor center along with beaches if you don't mind a bit of a hike to get to them. Not as quiet or serene as many parks due to the proximity to the city and the amount of boat traffic on the river.
Ben Bolopue
Love this place! Always something for the outdoor enthusiast no matter what time of year!
Rheyannon Mueggenberg
Beautiful and peaceful! The backpacking campground is very beautiful & is set up very well! The pumps for the wells are solar powered and the nearest one to our site (site 3) wasnt working unfortunately (perhaps too many cloudy days) so we had to walk to the water that was near the beach but that wasn't a huge deal. We would definitely return!! 😃 There are switch backs that give you quite the workout!
prerna bhandari
Come let's hike , take out pets and explore the wild.
Brandon imsdahl
Best state park for hills, nature and tranquility near the metro. You feel like you're in the country when your minutes away from the ever encroaching city. In 5 years the city will be at park limits with the way Woodbury is expanding.
Joan Bliss
Excellent hiking, private campsites, you need to prepare yourself for a hike to the campsite with all your gear but it's worth it. Very helpful staff. We camped along the RI er and the peace and quiet was interrupted by jet skis and speed boats but each to his own and they all left well before sunset. Love this park. Beautiful in the fall!
Ryan
Wonderful state park with many miles of hiking trails. I visited in late fall, so it wasn't too busy with either summer or winter events. I definitely intend on coming back and seeing how the trails are for winter hiking.
I suggest doing the north loop for a hike. It takes a bit over and hour and features a couple overlooks that are quite special.
Pavithra S
We went today for a short time. But the state park is absolutely beautiful!! Ample parking lots, beautiful views of St. Croix river and convenient beach access areas. The beach access areas also have lots of benches for anyone to sit, relax, and watch the beauty of the river and the many boats passing by. Couldn't see the camping grounds ad they were all closed due to the current COVID-19 situation. The visitor's center and restrooms are closed. They have a few mobile toilets before reaching the visitor center. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the place was not too populated. This is a good place to spend your time outdoors with kids while practicing social distancing.
Michael Stearney
Although it can get a bit crowded on weekends, this is a great park for a weekday picnic or hike. Well maintained, lots of well spaced picnic tables, lots of trails, both Riverside and in the prairie. With social distancing requirements in place, this is a big enough park to feel safe and find some solitude.
K W
It's gotten really popular (ie crowded) over the last several years, but otherwise still enjoyable - wildlife still abundant.
Dave B
Great place to hike that’s so close to the cities. There’s trails up through the fields along with a trail along the river that has areas to get down by the river front. There’s tons of picnic tables and multiple areas for lunch or get togethers. The campsites are a pretty short walk though they’re mostly uphill.
Emily R
Love this park and love the hike in campground. Super secluded sites and a great hike up the bluff, especially now that they have upgraded the hillside trail. My only warning is that if you pick a camping spot in the woods to be aware of the raccoons. The park doesn't seem to warn incoming campers about proper food storage, but they are tenacious in the trees so make sure to either hang your food or use a storage can!
Scott Williams
It was a beautiful place with many hiking trails to choose from. It offers camping and cabin rentals as well. Very crowded on weekends though and lots of dogs. That may be a good or bad thing depending on if you like dogs. Our dog had a great time.
Mary Biebl
Great hiking paths, maps for trails good be clearer as to walking a loop. We ended up walking on the street for a bit not knowing how to follow in the correct areas, to get back to car. Signage tough to follow.
Matthew Vopat (Vopezy)
Quite a few hills but it definitely gets the heart pumping. Nice breeze off the river and not too crowded. A did see a few people that don't understand what staying on the paths means.
Michael Burch
Love this park! Well maintained, has a great renewable energy presence, and is super close to the Twin Cities!
Camping is great if you don't mind a small hike in. These are not pull up and camp sites which offers a more secluded feel.
Great for trial running, hiking, swimming, and fishing!
Lynda Decker
Breathe taking raw beautiful of God’s creation in nature! Hike, bike, walk and breath in the time away from stress.
Shawn Butler
Nice park for backpacking, but sites are a little close together for my taste.
cindy c
My favorite park! I love the different trail options, like the easy walk along the river, the paved trails and my personal fav through the evergreens. Also a great place for a picnic and some volleyball. I've seen plenty of deer and bald eagles. Lots of bird watching. It's my happy place!
Kristina
A variety of different hiking trails from flat rolling trails to steeper, trails with more rocks and treenroots that take you down to the river. Beautiful viewpoints of the river valley, quiet forested areas, and grassy plains. Walk in camp sites are spread out so you can have more privacy than most State Park camp sites. Highly recommend.
David Powers
My review could be considered bias because of what I’m comparing this place to. For its distance from the cities it’s pretty good but there’s nothing very distinguishing about it. It has some cool spots on the river but otherwise seems no better than a park you could go to for free. If you plan to spend the entrance fee I would recommend going to a better state park that has more unique features. The place is too busy most of the time and that really takes away from the type of hiking experience that I enjoy. Worth going to if you’ve never been.
Nancy
I love this park! Great hiking!
Manju Parikh
Beautiful place, nice trails.
Peter Goldberg
Great location on the Saint Croix River with stunning views. The landscape is a variety of restored prairie and woods, so there is something for everyone. It can get busy at peak times, but there are enough trails that it only feels busy in the parking lots.
Shawn Lyon
Afton state park is one of the best parks in the Twin Cities. If you live on the east side of the twin cities it is at most a 25 minutes drive. The trails are perfect for both a short and long day hikes and you can either hit the prairie trails or the river trails for a different feel. They also have some very nice picnic facilities near the visitor center and the beach area. Perfect for a family excursion. This park can get a bit busy as it is so close, so plan accordingly.
Cyprian Czop
Unfortunately not many paths or trails on which you are allowed to ride a bike, but there is one for biking (lenght of about 3 miles in one direction, then you go back, there is no loop). It us worth exploring, though; you go first through prairie, then pass the visitor Centre and then go along the shore of St. Croix River, by the beach. The bike trail is paved or gravel and you share it with hikers.
Bryce Werner
Great and varied terrain for hiking, snow shoeing, and x-country skiing.
Lacey Kirchoff
Great hiking trails and scenery! Ive always loved Afton State Park, especially because we can bring the dog with too! My only complaint would be the bugs! They are super bad this year! There is also no playground for the kids! Other than that its perfect! Love the wild life, the peacefulness, the beach and the boat launch are great too!
Danielle Lindblom
One of my absolute favorite Minnesota state parks! It's got the best terrain hiking near the Metro. If you'd like something with actual elevation change there are some fabulous trails with good challenge. I bring my dogs here and they also enjoy dipping their feet in the water at the river. The flooding is very bad this year but otherwise the campground is incredible. If you're going to do group camping be sure to book camp 2 as it's a big open grassy area and awesome for Community camping. I didn't care for group Camp one because it's more spread out and it used to be a drive-in. Of course, the Backpackers campground on top of the bluff is not to be missed! You've got to Camp up there! There are Vault toilets and also water which is more than can be said for nearly any other backpacking Campground. The sites are perfect and very well secluded. You can't go wrong.
Eco Mama
Great park! Very accommodating for my friends wedding! We stayed in group camp- it was large with several sites big enough for campers and tents. Bathrooms were kept clean and well maintained. Our group camp was near the cabins so wedding party stayed there. Beautiful wedding!
Christian Neal-Herman
Fantastic state park close to the Twin Cities. They have several different types of habitats for hiking and recreation. The camping also appears to be very nice. The beaches on the river looked fun, but we hadn't brought our suits.
Kelly Cantwell
A beautiful hike along the St Croix — we really enjoyed it!
Daniel Arend
Loads of hiking and even some biking trails. Camping areas look nice, and farther from the parking lot than most other state parks - making a mental note to stay a night or two next summer. Good maps are posted at all the major trail intersections.
Jeremy Hutchinson
Great spot for a quick hike that is close to the city. Open year round (hiking, horseback, biking, xc skiing, snowshoeing). Could easily spend an entire day, but there are also shorter hikes (1.5 hours and less)
Raina
For trail running: trails are SUPER rocky, I run with minimalist shoes everywhere I go, this is the only park I have been to where the trails have hurt my feet so be warned. Tons of people on the main trails, but only saw one person on the Deer Valley loop. I can see why it would be nice though if not for those two things. Also, your can't see the river at all from anywhere on top off the bluff because it is blocked by trees.
Kevin S
ITS SO LOVELY HERE. However if you're gonna go to the hike in campsites they don't do a good job of letting you know what you're getting into. It's a 25 minute hike UPHILL full of super steep inclines and things. Which is fine, we just didn't realize the new trail was so much longer. On top of that, they offer "self serve" fire wood that they charge you 6$ a day to access that is actually just literal massive tree logs and they give you nothing but a couple dull hand saws. What a joke! Other than these things, it's amazing though, great area and lovely camping!
Banle Gaar
Cannot get enough of this park. Love the fact it's so close to the cities but takes you away from everything instantly. Great hikes all around this massive park. The old rail trail along the river, to the climb upwards to the peak viewing sight, glorious everytime. Have yet to actually camp here but tend to home for 4-6 hours each time I visit.
Gary Jorges
A must place tobHike along the Scienic St.Croix River! !
Arnaud Daix
Afton State Park is a very nice park located by the Ste Croix River, featuring great hikes, water activities, and much more. It is very popular, and for those weary of large crowds, come before 11am, as the parkings get full quickly.
Pat Seitz
Great place for the whole family! Plenty of hiking, beach areas on the river and picnic spaces to make it a full day. Dog friendly too!
Russell Brightblade
It is a beautiful park with many great walking trail options. I would highly recommend this place for anyone.
Vang Moua
Bike trails, walking trails n many more to explored.
Nancy Cerkvenik
For a State Park that is just outside a metropolitan area.... This is a pretty great refuge. Camping and hiking available. Great educational resources for children.
Hans Brakob
Large rambling park. Nice hike down to the river.
Al #
Great state park. Lots of hiking and biking trails and a wonderful mix of forest, prairie and oak savannah. It's also very close to the twin cities and so makes for an easy day trip from the city. There is a fantastic hike in campsite as well as some drive in group camp sites and yurts for colder weather camping. Staff is friendly and helpful and there is even a beach on the St. Croix. I've been to a bunch of state parks and campsites around MN and WI and this is one of my favorites!
Sagar Mohare
Trail walk is so beautiful during fall...
Sarah Vlasak
Great park any time of the year and for any activity. The vast amount of trails are always kept up and provide a lot of variety. Camping options are vast too. Can get a little busy during some summer weekends, but it’s never too much.
Chet Haider
The trails were well groomed and the staff were very helpful. Trail markers could have been a bit more clear. We did see a doe and a couple fawns on our walk...beautiful.
Ken Dorman
Lots of great and challenging trails to hike on. You may even spot bald eagles down by the river
TJ Lewis
One of my favorite SPs in Minnesota. It's simply gorgeous. The trails are well kept, the hike-to camping sites are well spaced and afford plenty of privacy. One can enjoy several ecosystems in the same afternoon: prairie, hardwood forest, pine forest, riverside, parking lot, and grasslands. Visitor center is closed due to COVID-19 nut the restrooms are abailable.
Sage Conway
I love Afton State Park! There are a lot of trails to hike, and the beach is usually pretty quiet. I haven’t camped here, but the sites are all in nice locations and not crowded together.
Dave T
My favorite park in the Twin Cities. I hike and snowshoe (depending on the season) here several times a month. The diversity of the trails allow for a different experience every time: dense woods, open prairie, streams, paved paths. Love it.
Juno Johnson
Great place for a ski. Perfect for anyone, especially families or folks with little ones who want to learn to ski. They have a nice variety in difficulty, so there's a little of something for everyone
Tessa Hane
Amazing staff, clean bathrooms, mowed paths, and great camping.
Btw unless you have a big group or get a cabin there is only backpack in sites that are 3/4 of a mile away. Keep that in mind if you camp. No coolers! They won't make it up the hill.
There are also no showers. Some people might have a problem with this, but it really is hike in camping.
This is a hiking park with many different kinds of trails from easy to hard. Only a few miles are wheel chair accessible
There is also a beach, a fishing spot, and near parking there is a large open field for games, volleyball court and a picnic area
It's a cozy quant park. Perfect for a weekend in the wilderness
S Swish
Beautiful. Ample parking tons of Pokémon Go stops. They have a bunch of activities from the center. We could hear a cart iron cooking class sounded so fun and wonderful. Loved the views and walking the nature paths.
Jonathan G
Not a far drive from the Cities, and beautiful trails.
Samantha Karels (Sam)
Ok hiking trails. You really have to pay attention to ALL of the signs. There are a LOT of intersections on the trails so if you don't see every single sign you will probably get lost. I got lost and another girl I met on the trail was lost too. Some of the pathways were not very clearly marked. You kind of have to search for the sign on what path it is. So pay attention. Other than the signage issue it was a decent trail.
Donko Beast
This place was really cool. There were some mosquitoes so bring your bug spray. We didn't have any and only got one or two bites. We walked about 4 miles of trails in the summer and it was very enjoyable.
Ben Cross
Such a great place for a nature walk or trail run. Somehow never seems to feel all that busy. We've gone for multiple 2-4 mile hikes and seen only a few other people the entire time.
Chris
Nice walks by the river, as well as through some woods and prairie. Trail intersections are very well marked and maps are easy to follow.
E G
It's cool or whatever. Just make sure if your coming from the cities to just take the highway down through to afton then to the park from there. For some reason Google took me on back roads all the way there. I swear at one point I was on a gravel road in the middle of corn fields.
Dana R. Thomas
We really enjoyed camping at Afton State Park. It has great hiking, birding opportunities, fishing, and river access. We stayed two nights and did not have enough time to do everything. We definitely will go back.
The main office also has fishing gear, birding equipment, and other items you can rent or checkout if you do not have your own.
Dayle Quigley
I have been looking for a place to go running on trails in the local area. Today I went to Afton State Park and it was fabulous. It's a great place to run off of pavement. I will say that it was busier than I expected and by the time I left there were few to no parking spots.
Brandon Doan
Great park with tons of trails for various hiking levels. A great beach on the river and plenty of picnic benches and fire pits. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite State Parks near the metro.
Tom McGuire
Nice hiking and walking trails. Some people forget to clean up after themselves, like any public place. We have taken our dog for walks there too. Very family friendly. Please remember to take your trash and animal waste to the trash bins.
Some of the trash are being updated or repaired.
Enjoy the views.
Sara Bauer
Really nice park. Since I live in Minneapolis it's a favorite spot for a long walk/hike and the occasional quick camping trip. The fall colors today were absolutely stunning!
Michael Heikkinen
Good variety of hiking trails. Did Deer Valley Loop, Trout Brook Loop, and Prairie Loop. All very nice trails.
Lynn Jenkins
Beautiful park with plenty of parking. It was very clean and well cared for. We enjoyed the beautiful wild flowers and little toads everywhere. Nice picnic area overlooking the St. Croix.
Liam O'Shea

Epsilon Peters
I highly suggest booking a yurt.
Darin Averill
Very scenic by the St. Croix River with miles of hiking trails. Some are aggressive going up steep hills while others are level. Exercise for all fitness levels.
Scott Elkins
Great park with lots of options for hiking and camping. Prairie, forest, the St Croix River, and some respectable hills. Nice picnic area, and a variety of primitive, but well maintained, cabins and yurts for overnights. A nice escape for the day from Minneapolis or St Paul.
JordiKai Watanabe-Inouye
Ranger was super helpful. Trails were groomed. Great variety of hikes. Camped at one of the backpacking sites and it was fun to cut our own wood for the evening!
Judy Van Booven
Good hiking trails, some paved. Nice beach on the St Croix River.
Travis Blasy
Great park, very close to the city. Lots of hiking trails, and lots of variety from prairie to deep woods, flat to hundreds of feet of elevation change. I refer to one trail as my 'church', try to guess which one!
Jacques Le Roux
Very peaceful wit great hiking trails
Sam McGregor
Many amazing views of the St. Croix. Also great forested trails and prairie trails throughout the park
Brianna Bacher
Beautiful state park! We love visiting this nearby beauty. Lots of great hiking trails, easy and more intense. Our pups love the trails too!
M M
Only bring what is necessary, and definitely only carry a backpack. The pros are it's quiet, everyone's friendly, the campsites are well maintained, there's a picnic table with a grill/fire pit at each site, not a lot of pestering bugs also there's a solar powered fresh water pump right next to where you get firewood. The cons are there's not a trash container near the campsites, the beach area is very rocky & a lot of algae.
Amanda Brown
A beautiful, fun, and clean place to bring the family!
Lynda Moua
Great place to go hiking and beautiful scenery
Beth Barnes
We camped in Bluebird cabin only one night. There was a picnic bench, two movable two person benches and a fire ring with a movable grill, outside. Inside, was an enclosed porch where they set a couple bundles of firewood. If you use it, then you pay for it at check out. You can call and ask for more bundles before you get thete. I did that and the extra time outside was nice. The sleeping area was very nice. One full and 3 twin, very effective heating with thermostat.
Trails all about the cabin area, close but not TOO close to out house. Not too far from water spigot. Excellent night sky, very little light pollution. Kids saw more stars than ever!
Gail Capshaw
Such a nice park. We easy trails and more challenging trails. So many different things to do. Picnicking, fishing, yerts, cabins, wildlife. Beautiful and accessible. Winter activities as well.
Jack Graham
Top notch trails. Great prairie and hilly, woodsy options! And the St Croix River to boot
Dalma Martinovic
Lovely place to hike and take in the views of St. Croix.
Jim Shoe
One of my favorite parks. Lots of trails to hike. Lots of nice views of the river and the bluffs. Trees are incredible in the fall.
Lots of camping places if you are willing to hike in to them.
Scott Noerenberg
Went there to run the trails ( hills & prairie). Trails are well marked with good clear maps frequently. Want to go back for the camping spots they looks great also.
TJ Mac-U
This is the most magical camping experience I have ever experienced. The wild life abounds. At night fireflies flicker everywhere as if in a dream. The rangers are incredibly helpful and friendly. The services are top tier. From the firewood to the solar powered pump. All campgrounds should aspire to Afton
tj III
Great trails and friendly person in the front explaining the history of the park. Very interesting. I ran most of the trails and saw many people. Some hills, plains, woods, and wildlife. Great place to explore.
Kim Cairns
Love this park! I have hiked every trail multiple times. Nice swim beach. Great place to camp. They have yurts and camper cabins too.
Ben Ganje
Great spot for hiking any season of the year!
Tone Coughlin
Very pretty park along the river. Lots of deer! Uffda.
Elena Mityushina
Nice park, stayed in a cabin, but it was extremely hot at night so we couldn't sleep. I feel like for 95$ a night in a cabin, they could have been better equipped.
annie
this is a really cool place to go to. there’s a pretty big lake w/ a dock that is unfortunately usually covered up by the water cause of the tide. but overall, it’s a really nice and pleasant place to be :)
Nathan Wallace
Nice park with 12+ miles of trail. Good mix of wide and single track trails. Beware, the prairie area is particularly hot on a summer day
Don Johnson
Nice trails, some paved and fairly flat, some with elevation. It was a nice weekend so lots of people. Next time I'll go on a weekday morning.
Austin Eschweiler
Great park! The trail along the river front is gorgeous and the trails are well maintained. Feels further away from the metro than it is (in a good way).
Sachy Bullock
Please cover your body completely as there are lots of mosquitoes. The small beach is a cool place to hang out at. Otherwise it doesn't seem to have much stuff to do other than hiking.
S Riggle
Great little secluded gem...snake ran in front of me but typical with the wet year we've had.
Tarun Badagouni
This was my first time here. We visited with a group of 4 for a day trip. We will definitely go back with more friends for a night camping and have fun. Drive to the park was very good too. A good place to hangout with family and friends
Jason Cross
Great hiking trails.
zohre nemati
It's a nice place for walking, jogging, and biking. Also you can go for canoeing here. It's a good place for picnic too. There are barbeque grills. There visitor center has nice and clean bathrooms and a vending machine but I did not see any staff there.
jakeislate
Perfect getaway from cities, easy backpacking.
Jeff Knutson
Beautiful park, great hiking.
Chad Solomon
Really awesome camp site set up that is super accessible to the Twin Cities. Bring your own saw. The park provides firewood for a small fee, but they're long planks of raw lumber.
Pam Gavin
It's a nice place to get away from the cities and go for a walk and have a picnic. It's on the St Croix River so you can go fishing as well as swimming. When we were there, there was a free Bluegrass Band playing that night. Good times, will go back again.
Brendan Johnson
One of our favorite parks close to the metro! We visit a few times a year, primarily for trail run activities, and the park is always kept up, and Gene and his staff of park rangers are always friendly and welcoming!
Thomas Muehle
Great park for relaxed walks! Some of the paths can get complicated but there are maps posted at every intersection making navigation easy - it would be nice though if all maps had current location highlighted.
Patty Yechout
Sun & fun! Lots of people but plenty of room for all. Lots of parking, staff in office super nice.
michaelevo2
Afton is great. I camp here every fall with my girlfriend and dog. Clean facilities helpful staff!! This year I accidentally booked my campsite a month sooner than I wanted, I realized this on the day my reservation started. They immediately switched the dates with very few questions asked. I highly recommend you visit Afton very soon!!!
Joe Friend
Great trails, not too busy
Albert Danielson
Love going here for long trail runs.
Joe C
This is one the best fresh summer air, nature walk, bird viewing, winter wonder ground, river rat, camping and swimming parks you can ever find. Afton has it ALL including woodstove heated gathering areas. Horse back riders are spotted here and there - hills a plenty. Go there. You owe it to yourself.
Eric Dahl
Up from deep South for an appointment at Mayo Clinic, but with the medical all done wanted a real Minnesota experience. After evaluating our options headed out to Afton and was not disappointed. The staff in the park were most helpful and opened the door for our first ever snow shoeing experience. After being oriented at gate entrance and renting our short snow shoes we "chanced to meet Linda Radimecky, the park naturalist." Linda is a jewel and helped us get into a pair of "real snow shoes" and pointed us into a snow covered field. She did this, I think as a act of kindness as her work day was done and couldn't have nicely blown us off, but gave us extra time and shared something precious to her by allowing us to use vintage snow shoes. Thanks for your hospitality, Linda! We had a great time. So much so, after an hour in the field strapped on the little ones and treked down to the river
Christopher Franklin
Prairie ecosystem, love the bird calls on the upper walking trail
Amy Johnson
Good hiking trails and only 30 minutes away from home.
Jane Smith
It had been several years since my last visit to Afton State Park. It is as beautiful as I remember it. It is also as confusing: while the trail has numerous maps to help guide park visitors, they are mostly useless and sometimes just plain wrong. Take a paper map when you enter the park and use it, it will save you from getting lost.
Eve Mooberry
Love the scenery. The trails have beautiful views of the river. The camp sites are cozy. Fire pits are available if you choose to light a fire.
mairi doerr
Yet another beautiful MN State Park. Hardwoods, Restored Prairie, Great mix of trails, Set in and along the St Croix River Valley.
chance daggerly
Favorite place to hike, wide open meadow views at some points, others cross streams. Enough paths that you can walk for hours without running into another person. Many mysteriously placed benches.
Jeremy Boehmke
Amazingly great heated rental cabins as well as Yurt 4 season canvas tents.
Joua Lee Grande
Beautiful and peaceful hike. A lot if gorgeous prairies with rolling hills. There are some inclines that will be tough for anyone with leg/foot/knee problems.
Scott Fillman
Afton State Park is an incredibly beautiful and scenic state park with wonderful amenities and close proximity to the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The river valley is hilly and there is a beach right alongside the St. Croix River.
Ben Cedarberg
Beautiful park with lots of views and great hiking trails. Friendly rangers. We would love it if there was more camping available here, including some RV camping.
Randy Hohn
Totally awesome, very beautiful park,on bicycle tour
Kyle Weed
Great hiking trails!
Katie Greene
Beautiful place with lots of hiking options. Both paved & dirt trails. We spent the afternoon here & only hiked 1/4 of the trails!
Nii-Akwei Acquaye
Camping here is great. To get to the camp site you have to walk about 3/4 of a mile including up a steep path that will leave some people (like me) panting at the top. It's worth it.
Rebecca Miniscalco
Great park with trails of varying lengths. We just took our dog for a short walk this visit, but I'm sure we'll be back to walk the longer trails sometime!
Caitlin Schmocker
beautiful park. Lots of trails and sights to see
Sarah Taffee
Lots of trail options, nice beach.
Ellery J
Went there Friday after Thanksgiving for a walk. I remember the days I have XC skied. When there is snow it is among the best places for the intermediate skier. Lack of snow mean decent walks in semi wooded areas.
Daniel Lawson
This is our go to hiking spot in the Summer. Has some decent hills if you're looking for a challenge. Everything is marked really well too.
Chad Whipple
I really love Afton. It's a favorite close to home escape. The hike in camps are great, scares away anyone who doesn't want to work a little. And recently my teens and I have really enjoyed the Yurts in the winter. An easy winter escape.
Russell Milles
Close to the city. Winter camping you will hear the Afton Alps ski resort. Busy, but nice. If you need nature but don't have the time for a drive it will work.
Vijey Mohanakrishnan
Lot of trials, beach and camping options !!!
Andy Feig
Lots of trails for hiking, and the views are ok. The trails are mostly wide gravel or paved, so they're good for a wide range of ages and abilities.
Megan McBride
Great place for a half day hike. Plenty of trails and quiet.
Todd “GreyKatTE” Edson
Great park and trails. This last springs flooding was rough but the trails are getting better. Still lots of wildlife.
Wendy Oleson-Garey
Great place to camp with our dog. Only suggestions is to have a animal proof food box at the sites to keep critters out of food. Trees are not the best to hang food from.
Tanner Lee
Saw alot of deer. Good picnic areas as well as covered areas for shade or cover from rain. I caght a few fish and had a great workout. One of the nicest state parks in Minnesota
Chaitanya Immaneni (Dexter)
Great for hikes . The park has many little hills so if you are looking for something more than flat ground to hike, this is your place .

Love. The trails at Afton are amazing. Wide rolly meadows, technical single track, flat and wide all purpose, the variety is amazing. Always a new adventure awaits me.

Merry Domke
Striking view from the bluffs and plenty of nature watching. Beautiful in every season!!
Matt Jones
Really nice state park for essentially being located in the cities.
Nadjeschda Goertz (Nadia)
My husband and just stopped by as a last-minute walk to work up an appetite for dinner. So much fun! Animal tracks, a beaver, fish jumping, woodpeckers, and of course wildflowers. Bonus discovery: Pokéstops! :)

Rangers are consistently attentive to patrons. We have family tradition of staying here during the summer. Close to the town of Afton and Thelma's Ice Cream (a must!). Wild turkeys, eagles, whitetail deer, toads and frogs abound for those that slow down and look.
Daniel Lien
Nice camping, but a mile and a half up hill hike to get to camp spot. Don't bring more then you can carry easily, steep incline.
Holly Burrington
Group camp site 1 is a great place for a large group. The individual sites are close enough together for fun, and just far enough apart for privacy.
caitlin blanton
Huge park with a lot of room to explore. I watched the eclipse from here and I wasn't disappointed. Far enough outside the cities to feel like you're a million miles away!
Foyez Ahammed

Great park with lots of land to wander. Had some mishaps with a few misinformed friends of my wife, and that almost ruined the place for me, but it all ended up okay. Would go again (though perhaps sans friends).

Beautiful park. Extensive beach and great hiking trails. Fairly secluded. Love this place.

Sharp steps to get river leads to dramatic views especially on not so humid days. The State of Minnesota could use student volunteerism to perfect signs ... the state should resist being cheap.
