Reviews of Topanga State Park
Piroska Keri
It's January 15, 2022. A gloomy Saturday afternoon. Temperature is perfect for hiking. You can already see some wild flowers are starting blooming. You can see the damage the hard rain caused (very deep holes in the ground).
Still It's beautiful. You can see the San Fernando Valley all the way to Simi Valley in the back.
At some points, you can see snow covered hills in the back far away.
JamiSue Sharp
Great hike with lots of trails all over. The views are breathtaking of the whole ocean, Malibu and Los Angeles areas. Moderate hike depending on how far you go and what trails you choose. We started at the Los Leones trail head. It is very busy on the weekends. Hiking boots are not needed, it's a gradual climb with many switch backs. No bathrooms close by and parking can be hard to find on busy days. Trails are narrow at the beginning of the first mile, but it gets wider as you get to the top and then you can hike further up on a wider trail/road. There are lots of lookout points and one park bench at the first upper stopping point. Watch for snakes on hot days. Bring plenty of water and sun protection if you are worried about heat as there isn't shade.
There's so much to explore and many different starting points so plan and prepare and have fun.
Christine C
Took the Bonehead trail. Make sure to bring exact change as the station is unmanned, and for those wondering it does get checked at random to make sure you paid. It's $7 for day parking. This trail doesn't lead to the waterfall or Eagle Rock. We suggest you park at a closer lot if you want to get to those locations.
Overall, this trail is fairly easy and mostly shaded.
Ronald McCormick
Great hiking area. I came to check out the trail after the fires. Looked pretty apocalyptic until I found the little plants and trees growing amongst the ash. Great hike. Wear a hat as most of the shade has been burnt away.
Miguel Plascencia
Beautiful place to do hiking, and have a chill day, among friends and Family.
Arthur Bartholomew
Beautiful beach, easy parking just don't be a jerk or the locals will check you.
Jim Kara
An all time favorite park of mine! This urban respite is within easy access of the Los Angeles area, both from the San Fernando Valley, and from the south, thru the Pacific Palisades.
I’ve had good times here hiking, biking, and having picnics with friends and family!
The park entrance has signage directing visitors to pay and display stubs or pay online.
There’s also street parking along Entrada Rd. where it may be safe to do so! Also for long distance trail user’s, parking down at Palisades Highlands and hiking up may be possible. Access from the lower trails may be affected after the most recent wildfires.
Making the best of it, even a short hike from the entrance, thru to the edge, or lookout and around back to Entrada Rd, makes for a glorious time! This short loop can be completed in under an hour, passing thru a mix of coastal desert hills and oak tree wilderness, including ocean views!
Fair warning, watch out for wildlife!
Wild deer are plentiful out here, and can be very skittish if encountered suddenly, so I freeze at first sight and try to get a better look at these graceful creatures.
While I’ve heard about wildcats and coyotes, I’ve never had a problem with them in all the times I’ve gone hiking here. Though have almost stepped on a large rattlesnake, and now watch my step on those trails!
Another concern especially at the creeks along the lower trails, are ticks. These little critters like moist, dark places and can quickly hitch a ride on unsuspecting hikers. I’ve made it a practice to do a body check in the restroom, before getting back in my vehicle!
Sun exposure may be a consideration, so best be prepared, taking appropriate measures for any length of trails and time out in the open!

Visiting Topanga State Park was like taking a step back in time. The views were stunning, and the landscape was breathtaking. We had the opportunity to hike up to some beautiful overlooks with spectacular views of the canyons and the ocean. The trails were challenging but manageable. There was so much to explore in the park and so many different types of plants and wildlife. Overall, Topanga State Park is a fantastic experience that I highly recommend to anyone searching for an outdoor adventure.
jeffrey okon
A great trail for family walks. Best advice do the Musch trail and return through the fire road downhill all the way from Eagle Rock.
Arrive early to secure parking spaces inside the park. Else if, there'll be spaces to park outside.
We were lucky to see some deer grazing very close to us. Very educational trip
Richard G
Really a spectacular place for a 4-5 hour in and out hike. We made it all the way up to Eagle Rock. We napped and relaxed on the rock before sunset. All in all, a very worthwhile trip to see the Santa Monica mountains, the sky, and the ocean in the distance
Eric Valadez
Always a great place to hike. Good for families. Munsch trail, nature trail particularly good for the little ones. Both have rest rooms. Try to beat there when opening as parking lot is small and fills up. $10 day use.
Zi
Easy-moderate hike. After visiting the eagle rock and the cave, we took another trail on your way back (right side) which goes to the ranch and finally to the parking lot.
Be careful when you want to see the cave.
And finally, synthesize with the nature⚘.
Andrew Dugowson
Beautiful spot, great hiking. Park on the street to avoid $10 parking fee. Well worth the $10, though.
Wide variety of hikes, from medium hikes of 3-4 miles to strenuous longer ones at 7-8 miles.
Good for kids and adults.
Jacob Thorington
My father and I (two big dudes from Michigan) had a blast here hiking up to Eagle Rock and back. I wouldn’t recommend coming here if you weren’t going willing to dedicate a bit of time walking on the trails.
Pay attention to the trail signs and you should be good. Make sure you go up the road and down the trail. We went up the trail and down the road, which is apparently more difficult. We saw some breathtaking scenery and some critters—including rattlesnakes.
We will definitely head back here the next time we are in the area. We wanted to go to the waterfall as well, but we were running out of time, unfortunately.
Jasmin Hussain
Topanga State Park is open from 8am – Sunset. Be aware that dogs are not allowed on the trails. The park features some easily manageable trails. The trails have trees at some point which makes it look like a small fairy tale wood. Be aware that there are rattle snakes, so careful where you step. I actually encountered one.
Alen Smit
Those who made it to the top knows about this stunning and completely beautiful view that opens there. It's speechless for real, you have to go there and feel it. By the way there is a small cave that people hide in, just to joke around :)
Yolanda
Had a great 7.1 mile hike with fair weather. We took Eagle Rock trail to Musch Trail. Started real early before it got really hot. I enjoyed the wild flowers a lot. Bugs didn't bother me but my cohiker did, even though she put on bug repellant all over. I will definitely going back to try the other trails.
Kelly Kim
Parking is 10 dollars. Make sure you are at the correct parking spot, there is another when you first drive on Entrada road, there’s a sign saying drive one more mile up to the main trailhead. We went to Eagle Rock on the way and it was a great view and a nice spot to take a break and eat. We did the Santa Ynez Waterfall trail and there was so much poison oak. There is no way to go around it so wear long pants, not shorts. Make sure to take a technu shower afterwards. It even says not maintained so it gives us some warning. It was a moderate hike with some steep areas, very sunny, not a lot of shade, bring!lots of water and snacks. Wear good shoes. If you are allergic to bees, I do not recommend coming here as there were many swarms of them everywhere. Waterfall was only trickling when we went in July 2019. It took about 3 hours round trip with breaks in between.
Craig Jack
Great place to hike with a variety of trails. Nice shade in the valley to escape the heat on hot days and great views from on top of the ridges.
Chase Arrington
Hiked this a few times now. Super quiet and relaxing hike with some incredible views. Moderately difficult, but the final spot is really worth the adventure!
Stacie Larsen
Great, easy trail basically right off 101. It's a nice place to bring people from out of town to get a gorgeous view of Los Angeles, the mountains and the ocean of course. Make sure to bring sunscreen and water. And stay on the trail!
Amir Khamesi
The entrance fee for each car is 10$, I saw many people who park outside of the gate. I had plan to go to the parker mesa overlook trail but I believe google need a edit for that place and showed middle of Topanga Canyon road without any parking or access to anywhere any way good luck.
Poppy Bleu
The hike to the Eagle's Rock was beautiful and a nice exercise (still not too exhausting or long). It took us about 2 hours all together. The view from Eagle's Mountain was great!
Ashley Crow
My go to hiking area when I'm in town visiting family. Great trails, some steep climbs that lead to beautiful views, and always some wildlife to check out (snakes on a sunny day are almost guaranteed.).
Andrew Abraham
Great park, but try to find parking on the side of the road so you don’t have to pay the $7 they charge in parking lots. Musch Trail and Eagle Rock are musts!
Tim Barritt
Short hike that goes up and ends in nice views of hillsides. There are a few small caves to look inside of. Trail not too steep as it climbs. One sour goes to a waterfall but no water today.
Chad Burger
Large park with trails and nice views. Recommend going in the morning or evening as it can get hot and many of the trails are in direct sunlight.
Edgar Arenas
Only trail I know in Los Angeles that at the top gives simultaneous ocean/downtown views. Some parts of trail offer shade. Hiking shoes highly recommended. Easy to medium difficulty. Takes about 1.5 hours. No dogs allowed on higher trails. Bathrooms & water fountain access at the base -good tasting water I might add. In the late summer you may encounter snakes! Parking is $10 on the lot, but I always find free parking on Sunset Blvd.
Juan Lopez
Facilities are always impecable, the trails and campsites are amazing. Favorite trail is Musch - shaded mostly 3.1 miles to junction and lots of elevations changes. Last 1.4 mi is uphill so leave some in the tank to attack. There is a camp site about 1.5 in with 2 bathrooms, water, sinks, horse stalls and picnic area
Avid Mario
Great for hikers, beginners to advanced. You choose how many miles you want to walk and also decide altitude gain for a great cardio workout while you enjoy the beauty of this place.
Jacob Syed Ali
Absolutely love the best hiking trail in Cali! The rivers down the trail is a surprisingly beautiful experience hidden within the forest! ⛰🥰🤨💪🏼 …
Sara Aboulhosn
We used the Chastain Drive entrance to access the park, not the Entrada road entrance. The small parking lot's trash bin was overflowing and the public toilet was a foul mess. Aside from that, the trail itself was fun. This is a fairly easy trail. The first part is a short, steep, concrete switchback. Then you hit the ridge.
You can hike to your left which takes you on a well maintained trail then Fireroad that goes all the way to what is called Hub Junction. It's at least 3.5 miles to the Hub, probably more.
If you go right when you reach the ridge, you'll be hiking towards Temescal Gateway Park. The first landmark you reach is called Skull Rock. That was our hike for the day. There are various rock formations in the area, most climable without equipment. It's a fun little area. You can continue toward Temescal and descend to the waterfall or even do the whole Temescal loop.
Yelena Lengle
This place is awesome. Don't expect any waterfalls around... but it's great hiking up to 3 miles long. It has some shady spots to have some rest for those who is in need. The surface is dry and can be very slippery, so I would recommend to use some kind of hiking shoes and bring some water with... since there is no any sources of drinking water available around.
Kousha Talebian
This is a pretty easy hike and if it wasn't for the heat, you probably wouldn't even sweat! But it can get pretty hot, so bring a bottle of water with you. You can get to the first peak in 45min, and it offers a pretty good view of the city.
LC Aguilar
I live this place. Great hiking. I saw reindeer and several birds. There is the possibility to go to a waterfall within the park.
Eduardo Rubio (Eddie)
Started up mountain biking from the end of Reseda Blvd. You can notice lots of maintenance being done on the fire roads. Single tracks still reflect all the erosion from the rains earlier this year, however they are not horrible and fun to hike.
Oscar Sanchez
Awesome hike, 21/2 hr withy 2 kids 9 n 11 years old. God bless you all.
Luke D
Very nice park with a lot of rolling mountains. Great view of the Pacific ocean.
Abe Achkinazi
Nice State Park. Nestle in the hills of quirky town of Topanga Canyon, wander amongst the shady canyons and up to top of hills where the blinding blue sky dissolves into the immense Pacific ocean. Not very crowded but watchout for mountain bikers racing by. Once above the canyons it is very exposed, bring plenty of water and sun protection. Mostly nice wide open fire roads. Please help keep the park pristine look, pack it in pack it out, and take only pictures.
Desy Gato
Youre gonna need some boots!!! The views Are insane but my sneakers were soaked within the first 20 min. 😅😅 Parking also sucks because it has to be exact cash, they don’t give you change. …
Kristina Aksenenko
It’s one of the beautiful places that I ever visited. ❤️
Edward Stogner
Great place to visit. Hiked to eagles rock here and really enjoyed the hike. Fairly easy trail.
Keaton Klemencic
Beautiful views and a variety of hiking trails!
realtvw
30 plus miles of trails. Easy trails, hard trails, amazing place.
Leo Hsu
The hike is very exposed, but the view @ the top is great. You can see all of the West Side. Give it a go on a nice clear spring day for the perfect east hike.
Cintia Landaver
Did the full 8 mile hiking trail, my legs were super sore but the views were defiantly worth it. You can see all of the coast line from Malibu to long Beach including the la cityscape.
Seed Of Kindness, LLC (Alternative Healing)
Nice place to be in nature"Topanga State Park" is one of my favorite places to hike in LA.
Johnpaul Morton
Great place for a fairly easy hike to a beautiful destination.
Babak Eliyahou
Beautiful hiking trails here! You really feel like you are somewhere tropical! You hear birds chirping and other animals making noises. Feels like a safari.
Diana Robles
A calm & serene place to hike with an ocean view, you'll enjoy 😊! …
Edwin Quijada
Truly wonderful State Park, great hiking trails with breathtaking views and beautiful nature.
The beach, also city of LA views are dreamy, great for a hiking or camping day.
Malibu wonderful beaches are just a few minutes drive away so it’s a great location.
Rob Filios
Beautiful this time of year. Everything is green after the rains and the deer are not too shy. Did some filming and couldn't be happier with the location.
Aleks Mats
I haven't seen the whole thing, since I only visited for a little while, but definitely some nice views there. Watch out for the rattlers, though: saw a young one crawling across the trail.
Thao P
We didn’t have enough time to get to the waterfall but the Santa Ynez trail had so many white flowers blooming on the hillside amidst the burnt trees, it was beautiful. Also not that crowded on a Sunday afternoon on the trails but parking on the streets outside the main parking lot was tight.
Martin Petro
Perfect for hiking! Love this view.
Jeanette Garcia
The beach here is always beautiful. It was clean not very crowded and a lot of surfers to watch.
Gene Chorba
Excellent hike! Well maintained and fun. Great views at the top
Mia Creative Flowers
One of the favorite places for vacation
Philip Davis
Fantastic park. 6.5 mile easy/moderate hike 9n Eagle Rock fire road loop.
Daniel H
Beautiful place for hiking or biking.
DayTrip Traveler
Lots of trails with views of the ocean.
Bernard Gomez
Great place to go and walk around in. Took the Musch Trail and encountered a deer. Really cool place, especially around sunset.
Jessi Cox
A great place to puff a baby Jeeter, just saying...
Jorge Garcia
Beautiful and peaceful place to bike and hike
Gustavo Faverão
Beautiful road, full of canyons and little flowing rivers
Shelby Dirkschneider
Clean and nice hiking.
Jason Gordon
Plenty of adventurous trails and splinter trails abound, there are secluded areas for a picnic towards the beginning trail and even more destinations for couples to take a fresh breath of air. Walk, run or bike and you'll find your way into some really awesome vistas.
Queen Silvia Sweidan
Topanga Canyon is just Awwwwmazing raw nature and super hippie creative downtown.... once you’re there it’s hard to get out lol
Jodie Bowers
So beautiful! Great hike - I did Eagle Rock. Ended up being around 6 miles and 2000ft of elevation. Lots of wildlife and breath-taking views of mountains, the valley, and Santa Monica Bay.
OSCAR TAFUR
Place of peace, also if you want it can be a place of extreme adventure! Anyways everyone must go and known it!
Yesenia Corado
Easy trail loved the view
Garrett From Ohio
Beautiful scenery with a mildly adventurous trail. We hiked part of the musch trail I think it is called, it was definitely a bit more of a hike than I had thought. If we came back I would probably want to bring boots and a water bottle. Parking was 10 dollars and the visitor center was pretty sad. Overall though it was a nice hike and we saw a lot of nature flowers, butterflies, lizards, even a hummingbird.
wpiv926
Hiked here for the 2nd time this week while on vacation from Arkansas and it didn’t disappoint. Ive hiked many of the trails in Southern California thru the years and this one remains one of my favorites. Go during the week to avoid the weekend crowds and you’ll have the place nearly to yourself. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
I would call it a moderate hike, it would be a bit tough for a novice but nothing a regular hiker couldn’t handle. Hope to come again one day because it was just as I remembered it from 5 years ago.
Michael Bernstein
I barely enter this park on my weekly hikes. However, what I do see is a beautiful, clean, and well-worth-the-visit park. You can take your kids, dogs, friends, and bikes here. Make sure you bring a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated, especially during mid day visits. I recommend getting here early, like right when it opens, to avoid being in that hot LA sun.
If you take your pets, keep an eye on their paw pads. The sharp terrain has been known to scrape up our dogs from time to time.
J. BISBAL
Incredible views of the city and coast line, even better around sunset. Bring a flashlight.
Cheryl Campbell
Great trails and picturesque viewpoints
Owen
Good place for trail running.
Rachel
Great hike and great view. There are a number of trails of different length. You can pick and choose how much you want to hike. Parking is at the site, for about 10 dollars. There are multiple picnic areas if you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the view.
Durran Felton
Beautiful hiking and running. It's like you're not in the city anymore.
Francisco Alfaro
Awesome hike here on a sunny day. We took the fire road. It's a moderate hike not too strenuous. We did come across a baby rattle snake so be cautious. Also the views are superb.
Kevin Williams
Really nice. The trail looks well kept. One sad thing is all of the trails to the left of the path don't allow dogs, so if you bring your dog on a hike you've really only got 1 option.
Lotus Physical Therapy Inc.
Love this place. Go hiking here regularly. Used to live in Topanga for a year or so and felt like being in countryside while within half hour of the city. Lots of great hikes and trails. Lots of wildlife and great views. If you go, please keep it clean. Dogs not allowed. Enjoy
Kishore Mandyam
Clean restrooms, great place to hike!
Cynthia
With the recent rains the hike was beautiful. Lush vegetation, clear skies, and majestic views made our day. We started about 8am and went to the first landing. Around 9:30 the train got crowded so come early.
Виктория Разумовская
So cool trails, nice picnic area
LZR HAWK
Plenty of trails to hike or mtn bike, Scenic trails overlooking the valleys and LA!
Andersen
One of my favorite parks in the area
It has a lot of diversity.. Gorgeous yuccas & rock faces one moment, and the next your surround by green and trickling water.
Go after the rain to hear the frogs singing!
iloveitontop
Great drive with awesome canyon views! #iloveitontop
Robert Rafii, Esq.
Unique area with several hiking trails to choose from, including Eagle Rock (big rock with scenic view) and a waterfall. Bring water and try to park outside unless you're ok to pay $10 to park. The scenery is beautiful but try to avoid hiking it if it's over 80 degrees.
Tonia Hemmeter
I had the best time hiking and seeing so much of nature and higher ground I had the chance to view the sun so much closer and to see the beautiful halo. I would go on the trails again any day. I am so happy I could take this hike with a buddy, I don’t know that I would have been comfortable by myself. 😉😎😗 …
Usman Rana
There are plenty of (easy, moderate, and hard) trails in this park. Scenery is really great. Good for running, walking, hiking and/or trekking. Parking is mostly available depending on where you enter the park, I never had any issue with parking.
Omer Cohen
Very nice and open space. Would definitely visit again.
Matt Ellis
I mean, it's a fire road. Not a bad walk, with a nice view. Some ups, some downs, some rattlesnakes. Current mask rate: about 30%. If you go far enough east, the Nike Athena site offers a restroom, water fountain, picnic tables, and a tower with a view of both the Valley and the Pacific Ocean.
Steven Chow (The Chow Group)
Great hiking and beautiful views!!
Mr. Van de Car
Pets are not allowed as they can disrupt the wildlife at this location however the hikes here are wonderful. There are multiple trails to take and most are fairly easy. The views are amazing.
Sarah Markwardt
Beautiful views from Eagle Rock and Mesa Parker Overlook. I you can see from the city to Point Dume. Trails are well maintained. We hiked and ran, but the main path is bike-friendly; would be a good way to see more in one day.
Rich Pennington
There are many different hiking trails to choose from here and indeed for all skill levels. A friend recommended this place not too long ago and I finally checked it out last month. Awesome views!! I will be back soon.
doug wille
Great hiking trail in Pacific palisades.
Hiking trail up the front side is intense workout with great ocean views. It descends rapidly to a small water fall and stream which is full after our unusually wet el nino winter. Not much water there during summer and fall dry season.
Hike up Canyon portion of trail to water fall is much less strenuous than hike up front side with ocean views.
Recommend hiking up the front side for a better workout with great ocean views.
Todd Turner
Great views and a fun hike. Very disappointed with maps, signs, and Ranger help. We're given conflicting directions and lack of trail signs caused us to plan poorly. It's a great place but trails up are VERY different and need to be marked accordingly.
Tim Tobish
Hiked loop trail, waterfall and ridge, been going for years. Great short hike with some moderate elevation gain, about 900 feet over a mile or so, total loop just under 3 miles. Great views of DTLA and the ocean from the top, snow on the mountains today. This is the gateway to miles of fire road hiking as well.
No dogs past the bottom Temescal Gateway Park. I have seen rattlesnakes a handful of times, but they wont bug you if you leave them alone. Just be aware that they are there and be careful, particularly if you go off trail.
Parking is $10 and they do enforce it, but there is always open free parking on Sunset.
Daniel Winkels
I love the biking trail over the hill! Biking from the valley to the beach is one of my favorite weekend activities. Going up the hill isn't the most fun, but the view at the top is definitely worth it!
Dan Mitnick
Terrific place. Close by to millions of people but still if you can get on the trails and away from the roads it's a world apart. All the rain this year should make for some spectacular foliage Creeks or possibly running as we speak
Adam Solomon
Highlight of my family's vacation in Southern California. The rangers were welcoming & helpful -- both in terms of recommending an easy/short hike for my family and in making change to pay for parking.
The bathrooms and other facilities were in tip top shape.
The short hike was simply gorgeous. Just fantastic.
Eddie Patino
One of the best places to go on a scenic and challenging hike! Depending on where you begin, you start off easy and it you'll find out it will quickly become challenging. Make sure you are well hydrated or bring some water with you especially during the summer. Once you reach the top, you'll have prime access to supreme selfies lol
jjeffares1
Great spot to hike for all skill levels. The hike up to Eagle Rock is approximately 2 hours round trip and is about 4 miles in length. Great views from the top of Eagle Rock of the surrounding mountains and all the way down to the ocean. Make it part of any trip to Topanga Canyon.
Dean Blau
Beautiful open space. I've been mountain biking here since 1989. Just a few bathrooms and trash cans so be prepared for emergencies. Bring water. Dry now but always "greens up" in the spring. Many hiking trails and views.
Jason and June .com
Love the park, nature and wildlife. It's especially beautiful after it rains. But PLEASE DON'T bring your dogs here! Too many people DON'T clean up after their dogs, which is really bad for wildlife. Take them to an urban park instead. Stop ruining it for everyone else.
Gerry Saenz
Trails are clean, easy for small hikes. Nice views of the valley and lush green fields during spring time. A $10 fee is needed for all day parking. Other parking fees are available.
griff infinity
Amazing views, quiet, try nearby Los Liones hiking trail (off of Sunset Blvd, two blocks east of Pacific Coast Hwy). Then, check out the very cool Getty Villa (free to the public!). All in all, a great day awaits you!
Zack Lumley
Great hike with amazing views from the top
Salem Hunter
Beautiful state park just north of Malibu. A beautiful example of the chaparral ecosystem unique to Southern California. Expect a lot of sage and Brittlebush as well as some beautiful California lilac shrubs, if it is early enough in the year keep your eyes out for wild cucumber, they are beautiful green spiky fruits, do not eat though as they are slightly toxic.
Sophie Pollak (Reese)
So beautiful! I went on a night hike there a few days ago and loved it! Lush greenery, wildlife, and lovely open fields. Would definitely go again.
J S
Amongst all the traffic, concrete, and aggressive housing projects, this place remains what it looked liked before people settled here. It is beautiful and rugged and amazing. Great for hiking, running, biking, or just hanging out.
Elena Roche
This park is great for long hikes, mountain biking, bird watching, plein air painting and photography. Beautiful views of the ocean, mountains and the city of Los Angeles during every season provide plenty of subject matter for artists, photographers and nature enthusiasts. The park is huge with many entrances, some have parking lots and facilities others do not.
Rahul Shivhare
Temescal Canyon is the finest trail in the area, great incline and some routes may require expert hiking skills (especially past skull rock). It's amazing how the rains have brought so much life back to the terrain.
Mohannad
Came here through the Los Leones Canyon Trailhead and ended up at the Mesa overlook. It was a long hike, but very worth it. The whole time while hiking you can see the ocean and are surrounded by green luscious mountains. I highly recommend a visit.
laura rosa
Love this place - is my trail running training grounds. Saved from the fires so far this year🤞🤞🤞. They did lots of dirt work - the fire roads are pretty well groomed. …
Plumeria Dee
Lots of trails, some with great ocean views.
If you are on a single track, please be mindful of etiquette. Better to let down hill hikers have the right of way than rudely try to pass. Single track means share, not shove. You are going to injure someone. Thanks
Craiger
Hiking, camping (yes, camping), and natural beauty right in the Los Angeles area. Countless trails contect you to the entire green belt of hills that move from the sea to the inland areas. A great place to explore without having to plan a big trip away.
Adam Weatherall
This is easily one of the best parks, and kept secret in SoCal. It is also an extremely important ecological resource, as well as being rare. If you consider yourself to be "stupid",as in you litter, or do graffiti,or play loud music please don't come here, for all others enjoy. Mind the mountain lions please.
Kelsey Waugh
Beautiful views of the coast. We hiked Los Liones trail. The trails are easy to follow and are easy enough to enjoy the scenery around you. Can't wait to go back and explore more trails someday.
Tet D
Hiking not too steep and not too long, just enough to lose some pounds
Lily Andrews
Great intermediate hiking. Overall it's a really pretty park, I would suggest trying to get there earlier in the day so that the parking lot doesn't fill up!
Francine
Love this place! So many different trails of various levels of difficulty with a clean bathroom at Trippet Ranch and some outhouse or mini restrooms along the way. Picnic benches and areas at the ranch and along one of the trails. Benches at most peaks and along the way as well. Bbq area at the ranch.
Michael Pay
Very rocky park, so if you love the desert feel, come by! When we went it was super hot, so if you decide to go during the summer, make sure you bring a lot of sunscreen and water.
Danny Roberts
Beautiful park with lots of great trails and amazing views of LA, San Gabriel mountains, the Pacific, and more. Great for hiking but the trails are wide and would be great for mountain biking!
Sean Yuan
Great hiking spot to see some beautiful views and escape from the busy LA city life. There are several trails you can take of varying difficulty, but all with the same rewarding connection with nature.
Ambrielle Army
Absolutely gorgeous park - hard to find in the LA area. The drive up the mountain is a bit windy and precarious, but Topanga is the most charming town I've found anywhere close to Santa Monica. This park is HOT so keep that in mind since it's on the top of a mountain, but it's a must see.
Emily B
So beautiful, the hike to the rocks is our favorite go-to hike in the whole LA area. 360 views, and you can climb around on the rocks at the top. It's just the right length and difficulty for an afternoon hike.
SRoc
Amazing area with some wonderful views. Lots of long bike and hiking trails. I only went on a hiking trail to the waterfall and this had amazing views but was not an easy hike back up the mountain.
juan carlos ducca
Great mountains and ocean views!
Carla Gordon
The park was beautiful and so quiet, away from most of the city noise.
Lawrence Barragan
There's so many trails to take, you can go in many directions. You could spend so much time exploring up here and you'll just find more places to see on the next trip.
Paul Van Suchtelen
Decent views and hiking trails/ Fire roads that connect throughout Santa Monica mountains and LA Basin. Not usually too crowded until you get closer to Will Rogers State Park. The roads are maintained so you can bring the younglings with a jogger stroller if you wish.
Mike Spearman
It is a trail that travels down from Saddle peak road to Old Topanga. It winds down a creek valley but the trail is well above the creek. To go all the way down and back is 7 miles. This trail is a piece of the Backbone trail. Right now there is a fallen tree a bit over a mile down. You can step below the trail and get under the tree. It needs to be cleared away
Thomas Brennan
A swarm of seagulls flew off with our entire picnic basket then began pecking at our new born baby like he was an over sized burrito. Other than that great day at the beach.
Cory Bunyard
One of my favourite hikes and places to get out of town for a bit without really getting out of town. The trail is also a challenging workout and not usually too crowded on weekdays.
Chris Hemel
Amazing hike and super scenic!
Rayee Roded
We first took the "east topanga fire road" to eagle rock and came back from "Mush trail". It was an easy walk with nice views. Took like 4 hours with lots of stops to take pictures.
Olga Svitlynets
Wonderful hiking trails!
Clayton Eubanks
This sight is only a few miles from the parking lot and is definitely worth a visit. Park attendant was friendly and helpful. Water fountains were plentiful and trails are well guided and maintained. $10 parking.
Nicolas Peterson
I have gone hiking here a couple times. It is quite wonderful. The views are breathtaking and it is a good place to just get away from the city and walk with nature.
Adrian K
Great views, perfect for a hiking date if weather is cool. Summer months too hot, however Feb March and April are best
Jacob Magnin (Jmagz)
Topanga State Park is a beautiful place in a very good location. The parking lot off of Sunset Blvd is the most common starting point and can be very crowded on the weekends (don't forget to pay for parking). From there, there are several trails of varying difficulty and distance. Bikes are not allowed in the park itself but they are allowed on the surrounding trails which connect to the park and to dirt-Mulholland. I would recommend the park for its shorter hikes and loop. If you are looking for long half-day to full-day hikes, I would look at the Los Leones trailhead and hikes along the backbone trail, farther north in the Santa Monica mountains.
Andy Lai
Hikes galore! Topanga State Park is my #1 favorite place to hike in Southern California. With a variety of hikes, from easy to grueling, flat to uphill, short to "oh my god when will this end?", this park has it all. There are bountiful, beautiful views of the ocean, the Los Angeles skyline, and green hills/mountains that are otherwise all-too-rare in the hustle and bustle of urban LA.
If you come in the summer, make sure to pack sunscreen and water! Many of the trails do not have shade cover (though some do!).
Winston Salser
Topanga State Park is readily accessible from Will Rogers Historical Park, which serves as Park Headquarters, and there are many other entry points around its borders. Each entry accesses the extensive inter-connected trail system that is heavily traveled by hikers, bicyclists and sometimes equestrian riders. Even in the darkest parts of (wonderfully cool) nights, I have frequently seen the lights of bicyclists and hikers. The cyclists lights travel so fast, along what I know are difficult trails, that I marvel at their abilities!!!
Topanga Park serves as the beginning of the "backbone trail" a continuous trail corridor reaching from Topanga Park to the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains. A citizen group, the Temescal Canyon Association, which I helped found in 1972, and later served as president, was created with the chief purpose of persuading public purchase of Topanga State Park. About 4 years after completion of the park acquisition, the Los Angeles City Council honored me with the Los Angeles Bicentennial Award for this success.
The State was apparently very pleased to learn that there were so many beautiful park sites so near Los Angeles, and asked my group to propose a ranked list of the acquisitions we believed would be of greatest public good. This was such a large undertaking that I created three regional committees, each with the citizens I believed most expert on a particular part of the mountains: (1) Topanga, (2) Malibu/Century Ranch, and the Pt. Mugu/Sycamore Canyon area, at the extreme west of the range. Soon the Santa Monica Conservancy was set up to facilitate acquisition of the parks we proposed. In about 20 years, I was pleased to see that just about every park purchase my committees originally proposed had been acquired. And there was the wonderful addition of the 68 mile long trail tying all these parks together. The Backbone Trail was a wonderful extension of the dreams of the latter day citizen pioneers who successfully fought to create this great system of parks as a gift to all the public. (You know who you are, and there are very many of you who can celebrate this as your very personal success!)
Vijaya Vellaichamy
Beautiful Nature walk. Nice climb!👍 You don't feel like walking/climbing 2.5 miles up. Enjoyed every moment! …
J R (jormigo)
Plenty of trails to go for hikes, but be sure to know you cannot bring your dog here. Tickets are pretty pricy for ignoring those restrictions.
Eddy Lord
Come and come again. Roaming dear at dusk, eary/interesting tree's on the slight hike up to Eagle Rock.
Free street parking, or $10 to park by the restrooms and picnic tables at the entrance to the hike.
Several places for hiking and beautiful Instagram pics ;)

Nice hikes. Cool lookout on eagle rock. Not the most amazing place ever but worth a stroll if you've got free time in the area.
HveRmved Prf
This was a nice experience. We walked about 3 miles and see several wildlife. It was a bit hot and I'm glad there was no fire as everything seemed so dry at the time we were there. No complaints and would do it again.
Hugo Rodriguez
Lots of trails but tends to get crowded by 9am on the weekends. If unlike a note peaceful experience you will find it early or during the week.
Michael “שלמה” Udem
I went here to go hunting in the morning. It's a crowded place, lots of people Haike even though wee hours. It's also rather short, not very arduous so I would recommend it for people who have bad knees but still want to go and get fresh air in Los Angeles. This is the sort of thing you have to take advantage of when you lived here, we are the unique city that has the largest green space a real for us in the middle of our city specifically one that splits the valley and the WESTSIDE. it doesn't really split mid Wilshire to the downtown area from Studio City. But this is a part of that green space and in case you do fall like I said there are plenty of people and it's a big area so as there are plenty of people it isn't like you're all going in on a caravan.
Steven Moran
Beautiful state park near Malibu with great views of the ocean. Not too much tree coverage so apply sunscreen. It can get pretty hot here.
Jocelyn Eke
Beautiful and unspoiled places. I saw no trash on the trail. The trail at the end was Rocky and even. It could have been better maintained.

First of all a I want to make it clear that there are four state parks in the area and they all connect, first one is Will Rogers State park,Temescal canyon park, Los liones canyon Trailhead, Topanga State Park
Their are ways to find a connection with all four and that's why I love these parks it's kinda never ending so if you're ever up for it you'll have a great time just remember to bring plenty of water snacks and most importantly you're will to conquer these trails.
Jim P
