Reviews of Shakamak State Park

Those of us closer to Indy don’t hear about Shakamak as much since it’s farther away but we’re missing out. It looks like a great place to take a family. They have cabins and a large pool area. I came here for a hike. Trail 1 is great. Great Lake views and some of the best aquatic plant life I’ve seen in Indiana. They keep the trail in great shape although there are a few areas that need maintenance. I saw many people fishing as well.

Boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnic shelters, cabins and camp sites for overnights, even some CCC and US Olympic Diving Team history...this park has it all.
We arrived in early Fall so the pool was closed but we were able to rent a paddle boat so we could see the woods from the water's surface. Hints of autumn color, a fresh breeze and a little exercise paddling around Lake Shakamak, what a great afternoon.
Staff was pleasant, helpful and available. Pit toilets looked brand new and were clean (as clean as a pit toilet can be that is, quickly Go then go quickly is a good rule).
And the name, Shakamak...just rolls off your tongue! Keep it up Indiana, some wonderful State Parks here.

Had a bit of family time together. Saw some wildlife and enjoyed the sunrise from the screened in porch of our cabin. Very happy we had AC in our cabin. Had a bit of stink bug problem while there but was informed it happens (talking 100s inside/outside cabin). Loved fishing from the dock and caught/released a ton of fish. Next time we will bring out paddle boards. Large lakes. Pool wasn't open. I'm sure it gets very busy during the summer.

I love this State Park pool. It is worth buying a STATE PARK PASS if your going to visit STATE Parks. 50 dollars for the year. This pool has a slide lots of hiking paths.

As a Hoosier I grew up with this state park, but it wasn't until I took my hobby of photography to a new level did I truly appreciate this park. It's trails are well defined and easy to navigate. There are several lakes for those who want to fish and or sit and just enjoy the natural environment around you. This state park will not disappoint.

If you like fishing, moderate to easy hiking trails. This place is awesome. Camp sites are large gravel pads on most. Installing new modem pit toilets in the remote areas. They also had share a book boxes around the campground, grandson loved that.
Jared Leinart
Love the huge sites at Shakamak! I am used to parks with barely room to open awning or slide out on camper. At Shakamak, there was plenty of room!
Heather Ison
One of my favorite Indiana State parks! Very nice facilities. The campground has large semi private sites and seem easy to get into. The lakes are nice to paddle on. There are nice roads to ride bikes on and the pool looks amazing! Several trails are available to hike on. The family cabins look nice.

Beautiful park in the fall. Nice newer restrooms and facilities. We will definitely be back because we want to get the chance to experience what the lakes have to offer.
Since people always ask about cell signal, not so much. At least the Verizon network. Phones and messaging worked great. Internet was spotty at best
Brian Libby
Beautiful area
Closed for season-did not get to experience the pool, Nature Center, etc.
Angela McGinnis (Angie)
Love this park. Nice wide solid fishing decks on lakes (Piers). Nice pool. Camping spots are nice and wide. Spacious. Flat camping are for my disabled son can ride his bike and not worry about hills.
Carmen Masterson
Campground was clean. The playground near our site did. It have a lot for our one year old, but alas he is fearless and had a great time. This is our first year with a camper, and this was the first site that I found out about campgrounds having camp hosts. Will plan another trip when the weather is warmer.
Samantha
Beautiful trails , great camping setups. Great play areas for the kids, good fishing. Swimming and nature goes on and on. Including the history of the lake. Great place for family bonding or just getting some alone time to yourself. It has everything!
Debbie Hanson
We camped here over the weekend. Our first visit. The electric sites are very large, and the place isn't crowded and used-up looking. It's everything I like in a state park. Nice nature center, pool, paddle boat rental, hiking trails, lots of lake area. Just beautiful!
andrew roberson
Nice clean state park. Great wide slots. The trails are fantastic. The kids loved the lakes and the pool. Well definitely be back.
Becca Ach
My daughter(3), sister-in-law, and myself went primitive camping for a night. It was great! We went swimming the next day after pack up. Definitely recommend for a get away!
Paul lale
I LOVE this place. A very relaxing, beautiful, clean, quiet place to go camping. The staff here is very friendly. I been coming here since 1987. I will never forget about this place and always come here. I love 💘 watching the beautiful sunrise and sunsets over the lake. …
Jackie Keefer
Haha we didn't expect colder temp drops in the middle of the night...pushed twin beds together and snuggled it out. Found and visited with a very pudgy cat during our stay. Loved everything about this park! Good memories!
Scott Beam
Walked trail 1 and really enjoyed the park. I'll have to come back and really check it out this summer. But one more off the list for the State Nature Passport!
R Cooper
Our family has been coming here since the 60's as each generation grows so does the number of cabins we rent. We have been coming mid October each year and usually 14-16 cabins are rented for a week. Our family has a trick or treat night for the little ones. Plus we have a stew brew and pumpkin contest. We most certainly LOVE it!! We definitely started a tradition and will carry on through the generations! Thank you Shakamak for all the memories through the years and the memories yet to make!
David Riggleman
Primarily focused on boating and/or fishing, Shakamak State Park had never been on my radar until needing to find a place to camp for the night near Terre Haute and Fowler Park not yet open for the season. I am glad to say that I was not disappointed. While I wouldn't come here just for the hiking trails, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the lake and the amazing starry night skies (you are definitely no longer in the city) made it well worth the trip. There are a few areas of improvement. First, the park seemed understaffed for a Friday evening (all camping transactions had to be done at the main gate), resulting in long lines at the gate and lengthy waits to acquire a camping site for the evening. Second, most of the non-electric campsites were fully gravel, rather than setting up a tent on dirt surfaces which are generally more comfortable.
Margaret lohman
Beautiful park, great hikes ...did two of the four and they were very well kept. Lots of great lake views on trail three. Camped out for one night , great spot, clean bathrooms and showers, quiet, and cheap. This is pretty in the fall.
Diane Ellis
Nice to have 3 different lakes. Campsites are large and clean. We have a camper with a bathroom, so we didn't use the shower house. I went in and it was relatively clean and everything worked. Lots of flies, horse flies and mosquitoes, so bring bug spray. The trails are nice hikes.
UPDATE: We returned this year for a few days. Happy to see new fishing pier from the campground. Unfortunately the construction may have disturbed the habitat because we did not have any luck. Bring a chair if fishing, the pier is nice but no benches.
Howdy Doody
Perfect little getaway spot. Cute cabins!! Loved my visit here. Great hiking trails with a nice pool to cool down in at the end of a hot day!!
Marty McMann
First time here and I loved it. Home of three differnet lakes. Lake Kickapoo being the biggest. I hiked trail 1 that goes around the coastal area of Lake Shakamak and it gave me some amazing views. Great place to go boating and fishing.
NR B
Beautiful park with cute little cabins, which were very clean. Fishing, boating, kayaking, etc. are all possible with 3 lakes at the park. We had a great time during our stay inside the park.
Cheryl Pass
The aquatic center is great for all ages. Our grand daughter loved the long curly water slide. The lakes are pretty. The fishing was not great when we were there. We had done better in the past. The campgrounds was very nice. They have attempted to keep foliage between the sites for some amount of privacy. It was really wet while we were there. Putting a tent in the grass (mud) was not an option. We had a family group of 4 sites and 2 tents were on the gravel pad. It does seem like they could work on drainage a little bit. Still not bad.
Charity Elliott
Camped over Father’s Day weekend 2022. Potable water fill station is VERY convenient right at the front of the campgrounds so no need to drive with a full fresh water tank.
Campgrounds clean and set up nicely.
AT&T service was good where we were camped.
Hiking trails were pretty, not challenging, but a nice walk.
Alicia Campbell
Beautiful trails, very clean, nice workers, great for the whole family. Very enjoyable day.
Steve Krenz
Liked the park. Has good sites with electric and water, well shaded. Bathrooms were fair. Shower was turned off. Extra charge over and above rental just to get into the park. Long ways from the highway.
Ann J.M.S. Harlan
Camping area is very nice; enough room and mostly level with most separated by trees. Electric sites grouped with extra space. Playground and central restrooms with warm showers. Water and dumpsters in the immediate area.
Monica Richards (Tigger)
Great place. Very well taken care of! Just check google maps to see your site. Really pretty.
Edward Cox
Great park, great trails. Kayaking on the lake. Wonderful fall colors. Not overly crowded. Really like the campgrounds
Eric Thompson
Excellent pool. Very nice park. Quiet with clean campground. Newer shower facilities at campground are very nice. Camp store has limited supplies so be prepared before you set up camp. Tennis courts, basketball courts, and boat rentals are all available.
Rhonda Dickey
Paddle boating is fun and its only 8 a hour my 3 kids love it
Anthony Kilbourne
Great place to camp they have good showers, bathrooms were clean when we went. A playground on the campground and "friends of shakamak" sold breakfast for 5 bucks 8n the morning. NO Beach but they do have a pool. 3 bucks a person.
Tyler Rodeffer
Very clean, beautiful park! Great for biking and plenty of little parks and playgrounds. Park is spread out, which I like, and very scenic. Has a total of 3 lakes which are picturesque. Paddle boat rentals as well. Several hiking trails and a couple of them are even shared use for biking. Will definitely be back!
Larae
Beautiful the cabins were beautiful you had everything you needed to fill at home the scenery was also beautiful we had a great time we'll be going again next year
Chad Musselman
This rating could be 5 stars depending on why you're going to the park. We go fishing there every year and rent cabins for all the guys. Cabins are clean with a full size fridge, stove, sink, microwave, and bathroom. 2 bunk beds and a queen size bed are nice enough. Good fishing on the lakes in the park. Cabins are quiet and not crammed too close together.
2022 update - They now have very fast wifi in each cabin, which was a pleasant surprise.
Song Brewer
Beautiful and family friendly place to enjoy nature. Plenty to do from hiking to swimming or paddle boat and fishing.
Stephanie Sylvester
Very clean park and beautiful! If you go to the pool with kids that need arm floaties do not get the plastic one's because they won't let you in the pool with them!
jennifer evans
Had a great day and so much family fun. Love packing up and going here for the day. Boating hiking swimming it has it all.
J M
Wonderful park. One of my favorites!
Family cabins are well kept and comfortable
Penny Booher
This is our main go to for camping ,it has hiking trails ,u can canoe or paddle boat ,it has an awesome pool and it always feels like a neighborhood when u camp
Mr. Wiley
What a great looking park!!! The trails and fishing pier was awesome. A must visit!!!
Kyle Grafe (DarthWhovian)
We definitely aren't avid campers, but the park is well maintained, the pool was quite a bit of fun, we enjoyed the trails. Definitely had difficulty sleeping due to some of the campers blaring music at 1 a.m., which is what it is.
Jay Mar
We visit the pool at Shakamak State Park. A beautiful pool with a nice water slide, diving board, respectful lifeguards, nice snack bar, etc. There is not a better pool within an hour drive!
Christopher Church
Water is shut off as of at least 11/23/22. Even the fill station is off. Bring your own water.
Toni
My favorite place
Sharon Norton
Very happy with the park 😊🏞️! My first time being here ☺️ ! …
ETHEL Fultz
Had a good time, bathroom was clean to the most part. The state Park needs to redo the campground roads there were alot of holes they try to put gravel in them but there temporary fix isn't working to well
Travis Edwards
Very nice property. Lots to do, very nice pool with waterslide and a small lake with paddle boats. Short drive to Red Bird SRA from Shakamak.
Craig Reynolds
Nice clean park. Pool was nice. Campsites were decent
Kaitlin Jones
Shakamak State Park is gorgeous. Thrre are big lakes we like to kayak, lots of walking options - both trails and paved paths. There are cabins and boats to rent, a huge campground, parks for kids to play at, a pool to visit in the summer... It's a great time!
Erika
The most beautiful state park I have seen. The cabin was nice and cozy, our view was absolutely breathtaking!
Brittany Ellett
It is absolutely beautiful! Love the sites and all the trails. Wonderful place to make life long family memories.
Andrew Shively
Peaceful campground and great lake to kayak.
Darin Lawson
what a wonderful and pleasant surprise this park is. Very well cared for, very natural, appreciate the fact there are no motor boats on the Lakes, staff was great, highly recommend!
Nathan Davis
Fantastic place campground was awesome no complaints definitely be back.
Amber Coker
Beautiful park! Tons of trails! Grab your running shoes, walking stick or bike and head out! Always a great place to see nature and get some fresh air.
Tina K Bennington TeamAdorkable
Always a great time. Facitities are always clean and tidy. Camp hosts from June 9th to 12 (length of our trip) were phenomenal!!
Michael
This place is great, the cabins are very comfortable, they have AC!!!!
Jennifer Hale
Nice, clean, and friendly park. Enjoyed the swimming area and the beautiful views.
Cindy Rodriguez
Had a great time. So beautiful and clean! Will definitely be back!
Reva Pinkard
Love this place ,this was our go to park as a child , there was always a place to play as well as fish , there was once a beach and dive tower long ago, took my husband for a tour today he had never been although I did take our kids when they were young, good memories from the park as well as the town of jasonville
It's a bit of a drive from Indianapolis but well worth it.
Thanks
Ashley Creech
Pool is always clean, nice concession, great slides, diving board, and also a baby pool/or a shallow end as well.
Katheryn George
Such a beautiful state park. Quiet, clean. Nice lakes.
Ciara Bland
Excellent place the cabins are really affordable and clean. Park is well maintained. The odd part with the cabins didn't have any linens at all. No sheets blankets towels nothing. Aside from that I'd have given it 5 stars. Had a great time beautiful place!
Steve Pressnell
Nice campgrounds, level sites, ok~ish facilities. Playgrounds are well kept, awesome camp-store (old horse barn)
Kim Barko
Really enjoyed this state park, very clean and very large.
Wayne Sutton
Very nice place to walk , plenty of bathrooms and a good place for a party
Michael Nedrow
Awesome park. We were just passing though so did not get to enjoy much time. The RV camping space is amazing with large spots and great services. The public showers and bathrooms need updated but are very clean
Winke
Love, love this park. Camping is great lots of space, easy to get camper in and out. Has sites with complete hookups. Some with just electric and some primitive. It has a lake for fishing and this year will have the pool opened back up for swimming. Yet it is very quiet and tranquil.
punk
Very clean land, comfortable cabins, nice fire pit with grill outside, awesome lakes! Here's a picture of a cute groundhog sticking his head out of a hole :)
Monique French
Can't wait to go back and explore more! A real gem!
Humble Sobriety
Went for a retreat in April , was a little chilly so didn't get to enjoy the whole park but was awesome stayed in cabin #1 and did some hiking lakes are huge hope to go fishing in the summer next time I'm there!
Denise “Stompalina” Trowbridge
Beautiful place for enjoying time outside. There are so many places to get in and out of the water that we spent nearly two hours on the water before we saw someone else. Good times!
Luke Turner
Stayed in the lakeside cabin b it's very nice and wheelchair accessible
cornelia bryson
Lake so quiet, not many people on the lake. Water calm, for great kayaking experience.
Nicole Pope
We love all of Indiana's state parks!
Greg
Awesome camping and day use area. Picnic tables, swimming area and boat launch. Hiking areas too.
thomas fults
State park hunt. Not s lot of deer but nice campground and lakes
Jeff Stinson
Peace and quiet! The weather is perfect. One of our favorite places for camping. Even with other campers nearby it feels secluded.
Ron Ryan
Nice, mostly shaded campground with clean restrooms and showers. Showers are strong with plenty of hot water. Weekends were booked but it was one of the few places I found that you could just show up and rent a site through the week. Pool was closed due to Covid though. Big nice lake that we fished in and had pretty good luck catching catfish and bluegill. Overall a good experience and I'll go back.
Kurt Wimberger
A Beautiful state park! If I'm ever in Indiana again I will come back to shakamak.
Queen Au' king
Love Shakamak State Park. It's a great family friendly park with 3 different fishing lakes and other outdoor activities to enjoy by yourself or with others.
Brandon Miller (BoSheck)
I had a lovely drive and a nice hike around the state park. Also rented a paddle boat which was a good price for the whole day and went out on one of the lakes. I'll definitely be looking to spend more time here in the future.
Jordan Marshall
Winter camping, so I expected shower and bathrooms closed. Vault toilets were open, but only found one in a different loop. Longer walk than needed if I had known their locations when registering for a site.
sue pick
Beautiful park with swimming pool and trails in walk.several cabins for rent too
Matt Duncan
Visiting my brother and his family at the campground today. The park is nice and clean. Be sure to pick up a map.as the park is very large. The campsites are neat, generously sized with fresh gravel over the sites. Sewer is available at the dump station if you are camping, but bath houses are also conveniently place around the campground. Playground for children are nearly as numerous in the campground and about the park.
I have previously stayed in the cabins and they were enjoying as well. The trails about the park can entertain for hours or days to cover them all.
Mark Copen
Nice campground, good place to ride bikes.
Laurel Fisher
Beautiful. Going back to camp, swim in the huge pool. It even has a big tube to go down
Stevie Ellis
Been going here since I was a kid it's a nice place. It is a little on the small side though not much to do. They do have a nice pool with a slide thats fun. Cheap too $2 to get in the pool
Raynah Willard
This is a great State Park! Love it! I’ve been going here for most of my life. My favorite time to go is Christmas in July! Fun activities, great holiday activities too! I would recommend this park to anyone. Spacious, clean, and quiet. The 3 lakes (Lake Shakamak, Lake Lenape, and Lake Kickapoo) offer several different fishing places. Nice trails, 6 different ones to choose from, some trails are good for bikes, great fish, amazing pool. I love it. The water slide is one on my favorites. You can rent kayaks, row boats, and paddle boats, all the safety equipment come with the boats. Several boat ramps to put your own boat, kayak, or canoe in. Great playgrounds in the campground for kids to play at. There are roads that go all the way around the park and you could ride your bike around them. Camp store easy to access from the camp ground. It’s not that far an you could easily ride your bike there. Overall this is a great park. Five stars.
malcolm coultas
Still a nice park after over 60 yrs
Abby Lehman
We camped here regularly for years. Just returned after 20 years. Much the same. The campsites are close but private and spacious. Level sites. The bathrooms could use some upgrading. They are exactly the same. Still enjoying our stay and the ambiance.
Mike Howlett
The best state park in Indy! We spend a week here every year with our family!
Brooklyn White
This is a beautiful park! There are a lot of trails, if hiking is your jam. The lake is huge and great for fishing or paddle boating. If you're in the mood to relax, the pool has you covered. There is a zero depth entry, which is nice for the little ones. The water slide is free, which is fun for everyone.
Joyce Kingsbury
We had a great time with the family! The only thing was, the weather didn't agree with us. It rained and sleeted, but we had a campfire the last night, which was great.
Sarah Zephyr Hoyt
Rustic. Aged. Beautiful. Raw. Loved the freedom of exploring the natural trails with algae-covered water, spider-webbed branches, heavy tree covers, and echoes of chittering/calling/singing creatures. The park has a great price for an overnight cabin. I highly recommend. Embrace nature!
Ashley Swalls
We love the pool, however we wish they would bring back swimming passes. It gets expensive taking 3 kids all the time. We have camped here a few times, and really enjoy the trails. It is usually a really busy campground, and having 3 young kids we usually opt for a more low key area. Overall a great place !
Dawn Klassen
This is one of the nicest State Parks in Indiana. One of my favorites for sure. It has 3 lakes. You can rent row boats for $20 a day. It used to have horse back riding but they stopped that a few years back. Nice cabins. But no dogs allowed in cabins. There is no Inn but the camping is awesome!
Pam Ladson
Had a nice time, drove around checking the spring trees in bloom and getting some nice pictures. Lake was pretty and several people in boats fishing. Camp grounds looked like it would be a busy weekend bas several were set up
Jacquelynne Porter-Marts
The park and trails are amazing! We primitive camp so the primitive sites were great! The shower house is centrally located which was beneficial. All of the sites come with a table, fire ring, and room for a tent and parking. We also had enough space to throw up our hammock. It's always so peaceful here and hardly any primitive campers if you like privacy.
Steven Bell
Definitely a five star state park. Hiking trails, biking on park roads and lake access. The campground ground is well done and well maintained. Nice to see the trees trimmed so people with RVs can access the sites. We camped in a 40 foot fifth wheel.
Hannah
My family has been coming here every year for generations, so I may be biased...but it's very beautiful. There are lots of places for fishing, hiking, and child-friendly activities like mini golf. My only complaints are that visitors tend to leave a lot of litter behind and I'm not sure the cabins are checked after each checkout.
Jon Harrington
I joined part of my family here for a quick overnight, while they stayed the remainder of the weekend. It nice and close to the water. I want to come back an explore more if the park.
Kelli T
We stayed 2 days in cabin 1. I wish we could have stayed longer. I was so impressed. It was rustic but so clean. There were protectors on each mattress and cabin was very clean. The view of the lake from the cabin is so beautiful. Private dock was great for fishing. Park staff is so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. We will definitely be back.
Dravin Sparks
The fricking cabin was so cute. Very cute and clean. Sorry but we didn't follow the rules. We smoked big loud and had a cute puppy in the cabin. Sorry.
Miss Andrea Reads
I went here a couple years ago and plan to go back. We stayed in a 6 person cabin.... 5 of us. My mom had her own room and the kids and I bunked. We loved being right on the lake. My mom took the kids fishing and we took a great hike. Saw a gigantic black snake curled around the trunk of a tree. That was a highlight for sure. Cheap, nice lodging. The little cabin was nice for simple food prep. Wish I had some pictures to post but they're on an old phone.
Joni Heredia
We stayed in a rent-a-camp, which is a tiny cabin that was just right for us. It could sleep six. There is a fire ring outside as well, and a picnic table. The cabin has electricity and lights. The kids had a lot of fun here and every person we encountered was nice and helpful. The trails are also beautiful!
Kelly Hillis
Best camping trip in years! Would have been perfect if there had still been one beach at one of the lakes. It's so sad to me that it's strictly a pool now. Beautiful park though with lots to do besides swim.
Merrill Smith
Beautiful and large State Park with lakes surrounded by lush green trees. The campsite is well spaced out with big bays all separated by trees. Just a pity it is not well policed as our adjoining RV kept us awake most of the night with load music.
James Fleming
Great park, I walk there almost every day. Safe, nice pool, big campground and small family cabins. Several trails of varying length and difficulty. Nice place to walk your dog, jog or walk. Just a real nice park with three lakes to fish as well.
ccwicker111
We just camped here this weekend. So much fun. Alot of nice hiking trails. Campsites are wonderful. Very clean bathrooms. Only issue we had was we chose tent camping area and the raccoons are alittle adventurous. We had one break into our tent and try to steal our food. They even tried to get in when we was sleeping! If you do camp here make sure to leave no food out or in your tent. They are not scared of people at all. Only problem we had. Other than that it was fun. Loved all the lakes we could choose from to go fishing!
Steven Howey
A great park to spend a few days or even a week. The cabins are very affordable and well maintained. The lots are well shaded and as a result stay pretty cool. Most cabins have direct access to a dock no more than a few dozen feet from their door. The water is very clean and the lakes are very quiet because there is an electric motor(for boats) only rule. The pool is a little small if it's busy but is nice and family friendly. There are a couple decent fishing piers, but the best fishing is to be had with a boat. Highly recommended for a a nice quiet getaway.
Steven White
Clean, Friendly, Quiet & Relaxing Get away for Family Events and etc. The Staff and or Employees are most Helpful and Understanding... Will Definetly be revisiting shortly, as We have several Birthdays and Special Events to Celebrate and wouldn't want to do so elsewhere. Five Star all the way!!!
Jennifer Wade
Family rents 6 cabins every year for a family outing. Great State Park for privacy and family fun.
Sexy Raver413
The kids loved it, everyone was so nice. People are very mindful of kids and others on the road, plenty of things to do. Trails, fishing, play grounds, tennis court, basket ball courts, and so much more. Im totally going back. Oh and very clean, kept up place, cabins are nice, shower house very clean spacey well kept up. I loved it!!
Jesse Ridenour
Absolutely one of the best camp grounds in the state. If you love camping you'll love it here. Fantastic pool and excellent trails. Go here asap!
Sally Conover
One of our favorite State Parks!
Frank Oliver
You can hardly beat this park on a beautiful sunny spring day! Incredibly peaceful with an abundance of wildlife and great opportunities for boating and kayaking as well as hiking. Great Park!
Joseph Fuchs
Campground was nice. Most sites are well shaded and have trees and shrubs between next site so good for privacy. If you plan to set up a tent with a camper you will have to look for a site that has enough space for one. Our site was great for a camper but to many trees and uneven ground for a tent.
Bathrooms were better than most Indiana state parks. Campground and bathhouses were very clean.
Trails were ok, nothing special to see but they were maintained very well.
Park personnel seemed very friendly. We would see someone out and about driving around or working quite frequently.
We did not go out on the lakes or try fishing but seen alot of people enjoying the lakes.
Pool was closed and drained because it we went out of season but it looked nice.
Our AT&T cell phones had spotted services for calls and text. Could not send out pictures or emails or bring up a web page.
Catherine Dorney
Love this place! It's beautiful and peaceful. Has awesome prices on boat rentals and 3 lakes and their cabins are amazing for the price...we love it. We caught about 12 crappie just from the dock last weekend. Definitely worth the trip if you like serene and removed parks.
Gail Stancombe
Beautiful scenery, great place to kayak in three different lakes. No gas motors make it safer and more peaceful. 7 well maintained trails that are frequented by a multitude of wildlife. Large, well, designed pool! Not.to mention large camp spots, Can't wait to go back.
Cheri Massey
Nice spacious campground off the beaten path. Old growth trees provide lots of shade. Campsites are spaced out nicely with vegetation between most of them so that your neighbors aren't too close. It campsite feels pretty private. Nice park with lake activities, etc. Good antiqueing nearby too
Maria Schwartzman Webb
It's very pretty. We took a paddle boat ride and it was an adventure to figure out how to rent the paddle boats (you need to rent them at the entrance to the park...you will pay a $20 deposit, cash, plus they will ask how long you plan to be out on the water - $4 per half hour plus tax, that you will pay up front; they will give you life jackets). We did not do any hiking after trying to start a trail and finding a bridge falling apart. The maps and signage are definitely lacking. However, it looks like a great place to rent a cabin on the lake and enjoy some time near the water.
Mitch Roper
The facilities here are cleaned regularly & in great condition. Very handicap friendly. Also great hiking & fishing. Our church took a retreat here last fall and there was a grove of persimmons ripe for the picking just outside our cabin! We will definitely be going back in years to come.
Jill Gross
Beautiful campground and park. Large shady sites. Good fishing lake.
Paddleboat and row boat rentals, kayak rental in the future. Great shady well marked hiking trails. Large poll (is closed this year because of the Corona virus). No lake swimming .
Terry Weaver
Had Good time ... but we were kinda rushed... Danni weaver. Ashley pineda.
Meredith Hausele
Very clean. Staff are the best. We come in each night after hours and are always welcoming...I do not like camping not a big fan of nature .I like bargains. This park has. Rent-a-camp. Its a 6 person cabin. Beds are bed bug free! Clean, well maintained cabin with electricity! here's the catch u have no running water bath/shower house is maybe 300 feet if are near the end cabin numbers.
Jessica Perez
The staff was patient and willing to answer all questions. Camping there was quiet and nice. The bathrooms were very neat and clean, which is a plus when camping with small children. The play places were lovely. Over all the experience was amazing. I highly recommend.
Gary Kramer
Enjoyed an evening with our family. Our oldest son and his wife have a camper and we all went over and enjoyed hot dogs fixed on the fire with mac n cheese, cucumbers and onions, potatoes salad and some fresh strawberries. This is such a beautiful park. We are blessed to live so close to it.
Scott
We camped there with our trailer. Full hook up sites available. Beautiful park with so much to do. A great pool for swimming and a beautiful lake too. It maybe one of the best State parks I have ever been to and that's saying a lot. There were lots of staff and very helpful and the park was so clean!
Scot Gardner
Good fishing, room to move around and have good space for activities. The people you do meet are friendly and eager to help with anything you may need. The grounds are well-kept. There were fewer bugs than at the State Forest, and they seemed less hungry...
Slugden Studios
Best concession stand at any public pool ,hands down!
Kathi Davidson
Absolutely love this park. We spent a couple of nights in one of their cabins. Impressed with the cabin and amenities. Stayed off season so it was quiet and we had our pick of fishing spots! Will definitively be going back!
Catherine Airhart
We stayed in the camp ground. They have a noise ordinance so at 11pm we had to turn the generator off. The pool is closed and they have no place for people to swim at the lake. There used to be a beach area but they got rid of it. You can still use kayaks and boats. For the amount of money to camp it is a little disappointing.
Mike Schmidt
Nice state park. Lots of water to explore driving around, hiking, or in hand powered or electric powered boats. Folks tend to do a lot of fishing here, we saw many fish along the shore and in the canals. Nice wildlife too. We saw many birds, deer, squirrels, turtles, fish, and a big snake in a tree.
Bekah D
We enjoyed our visit to Shakamak, although it isn't as well maintained as some other state parks we've visited. The trails aren't always clearly marked, and the map is a good guide but it's not to scale. There were a few places on trail 1 where the dirt path has almost completely eroded away! They keep the campground clean and reasonably maintained, and the pool and slide was a huge hit with the kids!
Twyla Boyd
This is by far the best camp ground we have ever stayed at. We drive 5 to 6 hrs from up north just to stay here. Love it.
Greg Adams
Great park! Well maintained, clean facilities, courteous staff! Other campers can be rude ( running generators all night and tieing up entire shower rooms for one group and being loud until 3am ) but overall a great experience!
john southgate
Good place to spend family time. Also granddaughter works at the pool concession stand
Brad Gradert
One of the best State Parks we been too. 3 lakes to fish, swimming pool, playground, nice hiking trails. The folks who run camp store were super nice. We stayed on site 35 and had a path to lake. Many sites almost two rv's wide. We will be back.
Jordon Perisho
Excellent camping and swimming pool kids love it here always making new friends!
Anna Ferguson
Nice park with great campsites. Evidently there is no curfew. People next to us partied until 3 am and someone was driving metal stakes into the ground during that time. May go back during the week and avoid the partiers.
Loren Holdaway
Have grown up with this park. My parents always brought me to Shakamak in the summer leading up to me being a lifeguard there my first two years of college. Turning mid 50's and having to go on disability I returned as an employee part time to occupy my time. Couldn't ask for a better experience.
Having visited many state parks in not only Indiana but other states as well, you aren't going to find one better, cleaner, nor friendlier than Shakamak is. Try it and try to prove me wrong! Have a beautiful day.
James Farrar
Stayed in one of the cabins for a couple of nights. It was a nice little cabin. A bit cramped for six, but doable. The only problem with them is tha there was absolutely no privacy for mom and dad. No door on the bedroom, and the ceiling was open to the kids room so that the child on the top bunk could sit up and look down into mom and dad's room.
Sara Young
Amazing State Park and great affordable cabins.
Jacob Overpeck
Beautiful Park, very clean and an amazing swimming pool area
Terri Bradburn
They have really improved many sites, some upgraded to 50 amp...a few to full hook ups. Clean campgrounds & bath houses. Keep your food items well secured, the racoons are very savvy to many storage bins!
Melissa Wilson
First camping place of this year and we loved it! Lots are huge for campers to fit. Grounds and shower houses are maintained nicely. Staff is great and very helpful. Make sure you bring what you need because town surrounding area is small. No internet connection (but who cares your camping lol) and texting or calling was spotty in areas. Overall this is a must camp at location.
Kendra Marrs
Great place to take the kids to go swimming, only cost $3 a person
James tolle
Trails are nice, top early for color
Stephen Bradburn
This is one of our favorite Indiana State Parks. Great campground, plenty of hiking, fishing is always good, lakes are beautiful and seasonally a nice aquatic facility and naturalist program.
Holly Faust
Clean, friendly staff. Disappointed the Nature Center wasn't open. It's a seasonal nature center due to funding. Bummed that someone in the office over-booked the cabins. Nice park, nice facilities. Found some nice birds, bluegray gnatcatcher, Baltimore Oriole, etc.
Joel Baker
Great trail system! I run here every weekend. They have bathrooms available in the winter months which is a plus. I have never camped here so that's why it doesn't get a five star.
Regina Sizemore
Been coming for 20yrs, will b back next yr.
Thomas Shively
Nice park and campground, stayed 4 days. Trails are OK, nothing great. There is a small store and you can also rent kayaks and canoes. Nicely maintained and clean park.
Dori L
We liked Shakamak! We were in the electric campground near lake Lenape in a pull through site, site 99. Our site was great! It's right across the way from a fishing pier, got morning sun, but was shaded in the afternoon.
Bathrooms at the camp site were very nice and clean, though you had to flush several times to get all the paper down. Showers could have been a little cleaner. There were noticeable mildew stains, but there was no smell. I even got hot water!
There were two fill stations and two dump stations right at the entry to the campground.
Bugs weren't horrible, but my husband, the tick magnet, had 2 or 3 ticks on him throughout the 5 days we camped.
Cell phone reception at the campground was limited to 1x, though my phone didn't work for calls. Texts would come through pretty well, but no data. Over by the playground there was a bit of 3G, which was nice for planning our day! There is good cell phone reception up by the camp store, and some areas of the park on the north side. But no 3G at the pool either.
There are several playgrounds in the campgrounds as well, and they were well maintained. Ours had 3 slides, 2 swings, and a tire swing. There are lots of other playgrounds in common areas in the park as well. Most have large climbing structures, slides, and swings.
They have a fantastic zero entry pool that is mostly shallow, but goes up to 4'9" and the depths are divided by ropes. Great for my 4 year old. My older boys liked the diving board and slide in the 12 foot side of the pool. They also have a really fun large slide. Adults can go, and take kids down with them, too. I went several times with my 4 year old and had a blast. They are open from 12-7pm and have very reasonably priced concessions. There is a shady grassy area with picnic tables, but there is no view of the pool, so not much good for mama bear. :) There are lounge chairs, but we got there the first day around 1:30pm and all the chairs were taken. The next day we arrived at noon and got one! $3 per person.
There are 6 trails from 1 a miler easy trail, to a 5 ish mile, harder one.
They have a great little camp store with everything from tiki torches to bubble gum and mac n' cheese to cake mix. There is also ice and firewood available at the campground control shack, and at the park gate. They take all credit cards, including Amex.
They have pedal boats that hold 4 max, and jon boats for rent as well. You can rent them from 7am - 8pm. Around $8 per hour, $20 for the whole day.
We also played mini golf! It was an easy little 9 hole course. Fun for the whole family. $2-3 per person.
We took a day trip to the Tulip Trestle, Yoho General Store, and Sculpture Trails which were all free to visit and well maintained. They have a diner in the general store and ice cream! Cute little place! The drive over to Tulip took less than an hour, and is very curvy and hilly, so not great for car sickness, but a fantastic motorcycle ride.
There is no cell phone reception in Tulip, so make sure you load your maps before taking off.
Overall, a great park. Excellent staff. Fun for the whole family.
Donna Beth Sexton
Love this park! Not too big and plenty of places for privacy and serenity!
Erin Croteau
We stayed in a cabin right next to the lake. The cabin was great, very clean, had 4 twin-size bunk beds (2 stacks of 2) and a queen size bed in a different room (wall between the bedrooms does not go all the way to the ceiling --fyi)-- you bring your own bedding. There is running water and the water heats up very quickly. There is a bathroom in the cabin with a stall shower. The kitchen has an electric stove/oven and a refrigerator right around the corner in the bedroom. There is one window A/C unit in the bigger room with the bunkbeds. There is a table with chairs in the big room, and then an enclosed porch with a table and chairs. Outside there is a picnic table and a fire pit/grill. You just have to clean the cabin, including sweeping and mopping, before you check out. There are hiking trails through the woods around the lake. There are a few different playgrounds around the lake/s. There is a place to rent rowboats and paddleboats (pedalboats?--the kind you pedal). There are plenty of trees and shade everywhere. A really great place to visit and relax!
Erin Calahan
awesome park grew up right down the street.
great camping fishing is pretty good and the sledding in the winter is the best
they have great trails for bike riding and if you pick the right one you might even find the old mine entrance off to the side of one of the trails.
josh proctor
Love the campground quick easy setup not alot of leveling needed. Very peaceful and tons of kids for your kids to socialize.
Stephen Girton
Great camping sites, 8 spots are now full hook ups (water, sewage, and electricity, 30/50 amp) most of the corner sights are pull thru, the shower houses are nice, and all are well maintained. The camp site pads are gravel and enough room for a extra tent or dinning tent.
The lakes are stocked with bass, bluegill, catfish. ONLY Electric trolling motors are allowed.
Lisa Watson
Although these lakes are man made, nature has clearly taken over. A peaceful vision of beauty!
Teresa West
Love this place. Shut the water off early and closed the restrooms to early. Luckily we were kinda prepared for that. Had a good time anyway.
Mark Steinmetz
We went to see the cabin we are going to be in. We like it and the price is great. Beautiful park. Also checked regular campsites. Most are really nice. Very spacious.
Chris Livengood
The park was very quiet on the day I went. The kids were back in school and the programs we're slowing down.
The staff was friendly, but the nature center was open and didn't offer really anything to see our do. I guess in the peak season there would be more, but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it because there was NOTHING to see.
Tyler Porter
Beautiful lake and trail system with lots of bridges and stair cases deep in the woods. Th RV and camp sites are very flat and spacious. Bathrooms are nice.
Karen Durnell
The weather was not in our favor. The camp site was a little small. Otherwise it was great and we will return next year
Rene Koller
Our family had a wonderful time camping at Shakamak! The paddle boat 2 hour window is understandable during peak season but we rented the only 2 on the slip that day. Wish we were able to extend the 2 hours. You can rent the row boats for 24 hour periods which is great!
Mark Woodward
We had a great cabin. Kids got couple fish.
Erin Nihoris
I absolutely LOVE this state park! The manager Robert Hogg, goes far above and beyond taking care of his park and campers! I've gone to numerous activities at this park and have always had a blast! They even have Jaws on the Lake, Christmas is July and a huge Halloween Weekend with trick or treating, campsite decorating contest, and a haunted house! You cannot go wrong with the park store either which stocks the essentials and wonderfully cute shakamak souvineer t-shirts and hats!
Braden Baughman
I have been to several state parks in Indiana and this one is by far my favorite. If you have the chance, I highly recommend Lakeview Cabin. It's climate controlled and has a full kitchen and full bathroom with a fantastic view of the lake front and center in the house. The trails are also fantastic and not too difficult for an inexperienced hiker. It's also only half an hour from Terre Haute, so if you need to go into the city for anything, you're only a short drive away.
Amanda Bautista
I love to fish there. It is peaceful when people mind their own business But the policeman that talked to us was very nice and very understanding. Otherwise no problem.
Debra Chadd
Nice park.
Saw lots of wildlife in the park.
Fishing was not good today from the bank. 5/3/2021
But had a great time.
Janice Christophersen
The lady at the entrace was so darn cute, it was Christmas in july. And there was a band also. It was good.
I look forward to going again next year. This park is great. It is large. And has all sorts of attractions. Swimming, padle boat. I here the fishing is wonderful.
Anthony Garza
My family and I just took a trip there over the weekend and i absolutely loved it! We camped Friday-Sunday and couldnt have asked for better weather conditions. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and will answer any and all questions you may have. I highly recommend a visit to anyone who has never been. Will be returning in the future.
Charles Bowen

Amazing place in general i had my wedding her back in may down at the beach area the people that i worked with to get it set up with the park where amazing and the prices were great. This paek is a must vist if you are wanting to spend a great day with nature
Eric Grumbles
OMG... Best Biblical hordes of mosquitoes ever! I mean these things are unstoppable. We brought canned fogger, a propane fogger, inch thick mosquito repellent incense sticks, and nothing stopped these things. My wife and I had over 100 bites each and we were covered everywhere but our hands and faces. They bit through our pants. THROUGH OUR PANTS. And she was wearing jeans. These things are not a joke. 5 stars for being part of a true miracle of nature. But seriously, just plan on being eaten alive if you're out around or after sunset.
Eric Allison
Nice park. Great for fishermen. Not so good for trails. There are 3 short trails, and a 4 mile trail. All four are flat for the most part and uneventful.
Brandon Hunt
Hiking, fishing, camping... Great park with scenic views. They redid the bathrooms and showers recently!
Michelle
Unless your camping or fishing this isn't a very fun park though we frequently visit it here for the view and peacefulness.

Beautiful park and nice cabins to stay in with trails to walk and a nice swimming pool. Camp ground is nice but need more full hook ups.
Cain-X
Since I live in Jasonville, a rock throw away I often go there to fish, take photos or simply sit there and take in the view. Cabins are great, winter months are quiet and peaceful and the fishing isn't all that bad as well. NOTE: Boating at the 3 lakes at Shakamak are rowing, paddling and electric trolling motors only.
Belinda M.
We go for the summer bible camp with the Church of Christ. The food is great! The cabins are nice and comfortable. The park is clean and beautiful.
Caleb Alex Hammer
You see, what you have to do is get those candy orange slices and a Mountain Dew from the local Casey’s general store, and go out and sit on a dock and meditate for a bit. Great experience.
Beth Ohnesorge
Best swimming pool in the county! Very affordable for families and nice trails for hiking. They also have a small nature center to look around in.
