Reviews of Mālaekahana State Recreation Area
One of my favorite hidden gems. The beach is seldom busy and beautiful. You can actually walk to the bird sanctuary island across the bay. Quite a lot of parking, bathrooms are nice and clean very comparable to others up and down the east side. Great spot for a family camp or day picnic. I’ve brought visiting friends here and they love the quiet and wonderful beach.
Mālaekahana State Recreation Area is an excellent location with good facilities and great beaches. We spent 3 days there recently with a couple of young children. All beaches are fine, white sand. As to surf, the beaches range from the tame and sandy up to the breakers (La'ie Bay on the South side of Area B of the campground) to the rock and coral reef under water at the shore in front of Goat Island (just across from the North side of Area A of the campground). To the North of Goat Island there is a bay with a somewhat pebbly floor and a stone structure the children liked to call a "submerged castle".
When the children were not playing in the surf or exploring the rocky parts of the shore, they were "hunting" feral chickens roaming around the campground. Other reviewers point out that you can "walk" to Goat Island at low tide: that's correct, but plan on walking in water at times that is waist-to-chest-deep. Particularly with the cross-current, after the first third, this is a walk limited to adults with bathing suits and good reef shoes.
The two camping areas A & B are quite isolated, not overcrowded and well-maintained. In July 2022 people were friendly and quiet, and we had no problem at all with theft (as mentioned in another review). Although you feel like you are out in the wild, on the road used to get there (Route 83), there is a large shopping center in La'ie about one mile South of the Park entrance. Between the Foodland grocery and the Ace Hardware located there, we could find just about anything we might have forgotten or needed during a stay.
Bathrooms were fine for a campground. The toilets for Area A had doors on the stalls, but those in Area B did not. All toilets had paper. The indoor showers were OK, although their floors become very sandy from use as evening approached. Park staff clean the bathrooms daily around 7:00 am. A number of water stations, each with 4 sinks and faucets are located throughout both camping areas A and B.
Other reviewers have noted that park staff did not check their permits. That was true for us. However, park staff was present on and off during the day and could have checked permits at any time. Given the very reasonable price ($20/day) of a camping permit for up to 10 people, I see no reason for anyone to try to stay without paying. Everyone seemed to leave their site clean and on time.
We came back to Honolulu very relaxed and with the feeling we'd been far off the grid. We also met some new friends. The kids loved exploring this patch of wild Oahu.
The beach is stunning. Go there just for the beach. The bathrooms are clean but in disrepair. The grounds are well maintained. Campsites are sufficient as well. Be way of the hours as you can't drive in our out once the gates close.
Beautiful place to camp in their campground, great day use areas and wonderful beach to swim, clean bathrooms, indoor outdoor showers, a beautiful hidden gem for locals and tourists ☺️
Love this park! If just going for the day be sure to leave before 6:30 pm because they lock the front gate. Definitely reccomend it for a camping getaway. We got to see a lovely moonrise.
Absolutely beautiful! Great place to take the family camping. Great campsites. State park guys come around each morning to empty the trash bins at each campsite. Nice calm water for the kids to swim and play in. Make sure to bring water shoes because there is a lot of reef. If you like "roughing it" camping, this is the place to do it. Hands down, my new favorite spot to camp!!!
Beautiful, quiet beaches. Bathroom facilities. Only 4 other people there besides us.
Great campground, the sites are large. We had a ten person tent, a six person tent and 6 x 4 person tents, 2 10×10 shelters 7 tables, a firepit and 20 or so chairs. Lots of space. Right on the ocean. A couple of grocery stores just down the road.
Excellent camp grounds. Plenty of wash stations and bathrooms throughout the camp sites. It is also right off the beach with fields for activities. We come here once a year and love it every time. It is also a great experience to kayak, swim, snorkel, or paddle board out to the island.
Just beautiful Hidden Beach is one of the few places where you can camp on Oahu. It's easy to find a Hidden Cove for stretch of beach just to yourself. There's plenty of parking and forested areas to get away from the Sun. Picnic tables, showers and nice clean restrooms.
Lots of parking, picnic tables and clean bathrooms! Did some fishing and relaxed by the beach. Not crowded at all and waves were minimal. Pretty small beach area but the park is really big!
Nice beach with not too much people. A great place to enjoy a swim.
Woulda gave it 5 stars if I had known making reservations is a waste of money because no one checks anyway. Could have saved my $100 and put it towards a local food joint but besides that beautiful beach and rowdy waves so be careful
A very nice recreation area along the Kamehameha Highway 83 on the North East side of the island. The park has plenty of parking and has modern bathroom facilities, you can also camp but only in designated areas with a permit. The beach is nice to walk along or also for swimming but be careful between the shore and Goat Island because of the cross currents.
Five stars.... yes... what can I say bad about the place????
What can I say other then this area is well known for its camping, clear waters and easy access. Parking lots recently repaved with many more spots then previously. Great place for family beach or play time!
It’s an ok spot to camp. We spent two nights here this round. The beaches have really nice sand but there was an exceptional amount of wood and debris on the beach as well. You can walk to the island at low tide!! The campsite is locked nightly which makes no sense to me because all this does is keep tax payers who pay for the parks out. It seems to be a theme in Hawaii. Keep the people who pay for the parks out but allow homeless to come and go freely.
You will also notice that the homeless are sleeping on the beach and there is a lot of trash not picked up around the areas they are. They need to be handled or moved.
Overall we had an good time and would consider camping here again.
Stopped early on a Friday morning. Place was almost empty. Couple people surfing and only 6 people laying on the beach. Parking lot has some very large potholes, drive slow. Small island very close to beach that people are checking out. Looks walkable, but rocky.
Beautiful sunrises, nice walks on the beach, small kine surf for the SUP. Kids love it. Great place for a family picnic or bbq.
Amazing beach access! Excellent facilities and picnic area.
Walking across the Goat Island at low tide is super cool. Just check the tide charts and make sure you arrive at a good time.
Not many showers around and rocky. Right when you get the gate on the left is a good spot and not much people camping there if you there for the beach
Nice beach for family and friends. Plenty of parking, but as usual, don't leave valuables in your car.
Nice long beach, lots of room, great for a picnic or camping. People talk about wading or swimming out to the island, but even on a day with low swells, the cross currents looked formidable.
What a great place to camp or even just spend the day. I love camping here because the bathroom facilities are nice and there is plenty of room, plus you can beat the view of the stars in the night sky here. They have plenty of open spaces and trees for hanging hammocks. There are sandy areas and grassy areas. Plenty of parking!
Really nice state park, grassy areas, sandy beach, picnic tables, trees, BBQ grills, nice large restrooms.
Clean, wooded, no people, gorgeous sand, gentle waves, picnic tables, lots of parking in the shade: it just doesn't get any better than this.
Nice secluded beach area
Beautiful beach and great for a walk. Not crowded at all
Very beautiful beach, it was surprising how we had a great stretch of the beach all to ourselves one day. There is a nearby Goat island that supposedly you can wade to on a good day, but the day that we were there the waves were rough and it looked too iffy trying to get over to the island, so we just spent time exploring the beach.
Calm and sparsely populated beach area. Has a small island within swimming or paddle distance. Great place to enjoy a picnic or set up hammocks.
Beautiful quiet beach an amazing place for a wedding proposal...
Our favorite place on 🌎 …
It's fastly become our favorite place to camp!!!
This place saved us when we realized we couldn't do car camping almost anywhere else 😬 there's a public bathroom and interior shower too, which is apparently rare to find in other campings.
Be careful though, the gates really do close from like 7:45pm to 7am, so plan your activities accordingly (or park in front of the gate if you need to arrive late/leave early)
Amazing beach park!
Great place for camping. Each site came with a picnic table. You need to bring/make your own fire pit and there is a pit for your ashes. If you don't want to camp there is a day use section just as you enter the parking area. The bathrooms near the day use area have stalls with doors the ones farthest from the day uses didn't have doors. There are water stations available. Beach was very nice, at low tide you can walk to Goat Island.
Great place to have a family get together! Great beach ⛱
Pretty empty park, bit as polished as others but nice having space to yourself
Not great for swimming, but not crowded and easy to find parking, etc. Great for a BBQ.
This is a great place on the Eastern shore in laie kahuku area great place to take your family camping on the weekends safe water protected
Chickens roaming free near a beached state park....it was beautiful and peaceful.
Great park....very nice for all your beach needs !!!
Beautiful beach near Kahuku and Laie.
Great big wide open area with plenty of parking and bathrooms. Little island not to far from tge beach looks like you could swim to it on a nice day. It looked like one of the bigger more well maintained beacheas on the North Shore coming from a tourist that knows very little about the area. A spot we would visit in the future.
Very nice park, peacocks and all kinds of birds, clean beaches, small islands nearby.
Clean and well maintained facilities. Beautiful place to watch the sunrise and free parking. Leave no trace, this place is special.
It is a great park to grill out and hang in the beach. The waters are pretty shallow. The camp sites are marked out by the picnic tables. The campsite map isn't well described. The map shows the last part of the roadway and the overnight parking is in the gravel at the end.
Beautiful stop on the Island circuit. You can always count on a state park to have the 3 things you need: parking, bathrooms and trails! Easy beach access. Great views.
Beautiful site. Lots of peacocks. This is a nice area that is family friendly. You can view wildlife and there are paved roads to drive. Lots of little areas to explore and not overly busy either. The area is very well kept
We had an amazing day at the beach un a shaded corner/edge facing Goat Island. There were families bbq'ing and camping. Great spot for kids also if you mind the tide and debris/wood
Wonderful area with pristine beaches and picnic areas. Would definitely recommend to anybody who wants to visit a nice natural area with good scenery. It can get a little sketchy towards the evening but otherwise is a pretty safe spot. This is also the best place to walk too goat island. If you visit please be mindful of wildlife, especially any nesting seabirds you might come across. Only go swimming here if you are an experienced swimmer. Swells can come in suddenly and unexpected, especially during the winter.
A large family oriented camp ground, majority of camp sites are surrounded by native bushes that grow as a wind and rain break, making for a nice privacy break also . Sites are clean, mowed, bushes trimmed, several campsite sizes for small to larger groups and family, good parking at each campsite. Grass lawn at majority of camp sites, running fresh water from pipe and spigot. Roads to campsites well maintained. Bathrooms located close by for 2-3 campsites to share, bathrooms are clean, have flushing toilets, separate male/female sides, well ventilated, no windows, but screen covered open ventilation areas along top of outside facing wall, running water sink in each bathroom. Park has security guards 24 hrs. in case of problems. No Pets allowed. Some campsites further from beach than others, recommend a cart for transporting beach chairs and coolers.
Beautiful place to camp or visit. Amazing scenery
Beautiful sunrise on mother's day.
We try to visit this place every year for camping.. its 1.permit per 4 parking stalls.. nice to see local ohana going.. and also cleaning up after themselves.. bathrooms are quite clean .. we try to bring shower curtains as some bathrooms dont have doors. Other wise sinks are avail to wash dishes but please kokua clean the sink dont leave food in sink.. everyone else have to use it as well.. it's hard to get permits but good luck..
Great camping sites, clean bathrooms. Can walk to goat island.
Best camp site on the island by far!
Beautiful!! If the waves are calm, you can walk out to Goat Island along the reef. Make sure you wear beach shoes. It is about 200 yards to the island. Make sure you put belongings in a water tight / waterproof bag as you will be in water ranging from your waist to your shoulders on the walk over to the island.
The true "off the beaten path" beach and campgrounds that most tourists never see. Great place to chill, party up, and of course hit the empty beach. You can walk out to another island, "Goat island" if tide is low and ocean calm. Totally worth the trek . If you go at right time the water between islands is never overhead, chest level maybe. Wear old sneakers to protect you from reef as you cross and also for Goat Island itself, very sharp lava rock over there.
Sign says it opens at 0730 but gates were open at 0640 when we went. Pretty big waves cause of the wind. Recommend to go early before it gets too hot and before everyone else shows up. Parking lot has a sign that says “high theft area”.
This is one of the less crowded beaches. Erosion has made it difficult to walk very far on the beach. When the sea is calm, snorkeling can be pretty good.
We camp here frequently. Restrooms are always clean, park workers are awesome, campsites always cleaned and ready to go! They recently got new pavement for the parking are too! Highly recommended!
Beach doesn't have much reef so the kids can swim. A bit down you can body surf or body board. There's showers and bathrooms. Grassy area. Great place.
We love walking out to Goat Island and exploring a bit. It's fun to walk across the rocks (bring water shoes!!!) in between the waves and to try to stay upright. We've done this every time we've come to Oahu! It's a must! I mean how many people can say they've hiked through the water to an island in the ocean?
We had our family reunion here and it was the first time I've been back for 13 years. Malaekahana State Recreation Area is a great place to camp and have various activities.
The restrooms are clean and well kept for a busy place. The entire area is good and clean. We had approx 100 people from our family reunion at our camp site and it handled it quite well. We even had running water and electricity.
The state takes good care of this spot. Running water in each of the sites to wash dishes, freshen up, etc. Also the bathrooms seemed to be kept clean throughout the day, and are cleaned every morning. Trash cans available at almost every site. They are removed every morning and new bags are placed. It is very hot here but just beyond the bushes through the small trails leading to the other side of the bushes and trees is a very long stretch of beach. Clean salt water, open stretch of sand going a mile in each direction. I choose to camp here any chance that I get when it's with friends and family.
We LOVE this campground! Everyone was so nice, staff was helpful, and the property was clean. It was so peaceful at night, and our tent site had a lot of privacy, and a great windbreak.
The state has really transformed this park during Covid times. Parking lots have been enlarged, trees cleared allowing grassy areas to grow, more picnic tables have been added, restroom was spotlessly clean, really an incredible place to visit, especially if you picked up a shrimp meal at Fumi’s or Roleys
Loads of fun... Go at low tide and head out to the island that's just off the coast... Nice beach, just a relaxing time. If you want to camp or have a picnic there are plenty of spaces with restrooms and outdoor shower to get the salt water off you after the swim.
Was just there for two days- when we arrived a homeless group was in our spot, after a bit they moved to another spot on the B side. On and off all day and night a group of people seemingly living out of their cars in the parking area came through the B side of the campground. They looked like meth addicts. We did not feel safe at all and did not feel comfotable leaving anything at our campsite. I feel the area needs to be monitored and if we have to get permits so should they and if we need parking permits why is nobody monitoring the parking lot.
The safety of this place is not somewhere you want to take your kids.
Beautiful uncrowded beach, loads of parking, good restrooms. Goat islet just offshore is fun and easy to visit. However, I found the snorkeling to be disappointing. Just not many fish.
Great place with WIDE open camp spaces. Two bathrooms with shower facilities at each end of the grounds. There are sinks with running water, scattered about for washing your dishes. Fires are ok, but wood is limited. You must purchase a camping permit beforehand either online or at the Honolulu office.
Was told not to bring valuables. Beautiful place. Very secluded.
Lots of sea life here on the beach. I saw about 3 man-o-war jelly fish on the shore here.
The best thing I liked about this beach was all the coral and seaife that washed ashore. I was there for a few hours looking for shells and poking about at the seaife that washed up.
My favorite beach in HI.
There's this one spot at the opposite end of the people camping I usually go to when I really need to contemplate, or with (1) other person to have very long conversations.
It's a great area, incredible view, nice breeze, gang of harmless peacocks
The restrooms are cleaned regularly and so are the grounds. Beautiful place to camp and swim. Kid friendly beach too!
To preface what is to follow and give the reader some context, I am a retired commercial pilot, and flown everything but a space shuttle. I have also lived in Aspen, and skiing each day during the season and flying my plane most days in total freedom in the mountains. I worked where ever the bugs were eating our crops and and I climb. I have been all over the world solo. I find jets boring and am a former hard-core aerobatic and industrial pilot ( fire bomber Captain and a 3 feet off the ground crop duster, flying million dollar equipment fast and hard while listening to Classical music). I seek simple beauty in all things. This is NOT my favorite island., so finding places that are acceptable in this overcrowded place is a very hard endeavor. Enough said.........This place, for Oahu, is great. The beach is not my favorite by a long shot. But it's a wonderful place to chill out. I highly recommend it. The facilities are relatively clean. It's been real safe so far. The ocean is wonderfully loud. Buy a big REI tent and chill out!! It's cheap per night. I have a much younger and inexperienced girlie wife and two young kids. They absolutely love it! Stay for at least two nights. We camp only with wool blankets and Thermarest mats; what a sleep!!! Do it. You will not regret it for this island. Also, there is no road noise to contend with. I like it. I'd say do it and RELAX./ ENJOY and get there early! Be sure to book online. Kawika. The "go it alone" Norwegian-American-HAWAIIAN.
Water is clean, lots of waves but a lot of branches
First time there, nice beach but alot of coral. Big sign says that there is alot of car thefts, the kind that they bust your windows and grab ur stuff. Made .e a little nervous to park there.
I love this spot! We’ve been playing Extreme Bocce with Eric Spear the Extreme Bocce Master for many years. Anyways this is the best ocean front campsite on Oahu in my opinion. However after 15 years of camping here we’ve encountered a bikini thief in the night.
It’s ok because we’re going to go to Pakaloha bikinis in Haleiwa today for an even skimpier bikini. Jokes on you thief! My wahine’s box is scentless! 🖕🏽🤙🏽
Family-friendly Beach
Great place, NO State Permit required as note in Vannic's review.
Read ALL the instructions and rules. Don't complain about gate being locked, you should have know all of this before you made a reservation.
Had a great time camping!
They have a nice and wonderful camping area and rentals make it easy to use kayaks and surfboards and other items like snorkel gear and close by to alot of food trucks just down the road.
Beautiful, different type of beach
I for one love howling winds and sand at all hours and I don't like bathrooms so obviously i was enchanted. Also, the ducks are violent.
Nice little beach park to visit and get away from the crowds. There are campgrounds there too.
Beautiful beach near Kahuku.
great campground. nice site. right near beautiful beach.
pay attention to when they lock the gates or you will have a little hike!
The beauty of the North Shore is highlighted at Malaekahana Beach Park with many ways to enjoy the camp grounds by tent or cabin, day or night this place is magical.
Great place to go camping. You can also just relax on the beach and possibly swim or walk out to goat island. Restrooms and showers available.
A lot of people were camping here, but we just came for the beach. The water is a bit rocky in some areas, but there is a nice sandy spot near the point.
Very pretty, scenic views here. Not necessarily a big beach for laying out on, but views are pretty great.
Very good camping area on a nice beach right next to goat island.
Great camping area for families. Bathroom facilities are pretty clean, no hot water, no electric. Awesome, deserted beach.
Good place to camp. Nice and clean bathroom.
Large open area for the family . Picnics and. Kicking back.
Good place to come with the family. Many areas for camping and lots of picnic tables. Big parking lot and almost no turists
Awesome place for the family. When the water is calm trek to the island. Been coming here for 10 yrs straight
Beautiful beach with surfing and boogie boarding/body surfing waves. Very clean and not overly crowded.
Very convenient. Nice facilities.
On the beach or 40 ft from it.
Nice beaches. Need a code for the gate to enter. Closed form 7pm-7am. Can vamp. Look at the website.
Beautiful uncrowded beach! So peaceful with a picnic area.
Great place to camp, as long as your neighbors are quiet. Nobody cares if you call to complain about noise.
The hale we had was number 8 and has a nice porch area which was up higher than some of the other hale so was useful during the times of rain.
Great Quiet place, great clean Pacific warm water and a long beach. Camping available and large clean restrooms.
This is a nice campground with beach access, tables, running water and it's in a low light area, so it's good for star gazing.
Peaceful beach not crowded
Not there best for camping because of the excess homeless that Cruze around at night. But fun beach with lots of reef
One of our favorites. Castle beach. You can see turtles off the rocky point on the North side of you watch closely
Beautiful beach with a huge park. It was nearly empty when I visited in the middle of the day on a weekday.
Very pretty! Not a lot of people there. The scenery was beautiful the water wasn't too clear.
A long quiet beach during the week. Not as good for swimming in some sections.
Great camping experience n made fun memories on a beautiful beach no tourist so we camp twice a year there
Beautiful stretch of beach, albeit narrow, with grand trees for shade. Clean bathrooms and a outdoor rince off shower.
Great beach, but wear water shoes, big reef and lots of rocks
A fairly raw nature reserve on the North Shore. Swim out to the island to feel like you're sunbaking in the middle of the Pacific.
Wonderfully beautiful spot ! Looks fun to camp!! Has beautiful view spots
Beautiful place, wasn't crowded when we went. Bring a hammock, trees r spread out enough.
Nice long beaches but a little rough to swim on our visit with 6 ft swells from NE. Snorkeling was not good.
Lots of picnic tables. Public bathrooms. Beautiful park and beaches. Usually gentle waves for keiki.
Great for car camping. Beautiful views. Can get busy near holidays.
Very nice facilities and beaches. Directly across from Goat Island. You can wade to the island. Very nice.
Its okay if and only if its not raining. The place is a mud bog when it rains!!
All time wave and windy. Each place have faucet. And shower facilities good.
Peacocks, seashells and a beautiful view! Doesn't look like it's good for swimming though.
Been coming here to camp every so often for years. Great camp grounds.
Quiet, love nature. So for me. Its awesome. Just to sit in peace with nature.
Really really nice place to camp out with the family.
The beach is nice and clean, the people are friendly , you can learn to surf there
My personal favorite beaches to go to not crowded and parking is always available
Excellent private beach great for catching some rays and watching the day go by.
great spot without the crowds to enjoy the island weather and beautiful waves
Park is in rough shape, but a beach that is not too crowded.
Beautiful beach with spectacular picnic areas!!
Beach is really dirty and it's not maintained at all.
Beautiful and no one but us thank u lord for giving us a safe place to enjoy no virus
Amazing experience and our wrangler was so nice and helpful. Will definitely come back.
Love this camping spot! Easy breezy. Great cabins and camp sites.
We love this camp sight. We always have our yearly camp there.
Very clean, beach is amazing. People are friendly.
I love the birds and the sounds. This is a good get away for people who love camping on the beach.
One of the least crowded parks , great for photography, and beach walks,
Nice beach. Cabins could be cleaner but over all nice.
My favorite place to camp. I almost wanna live there
Beautiful sandy beach, great views, monk seals, turtles, kite boarding, paddle boarding.
Beautiful scenery, not a lot of people, clean bathrooms
Nice and cool with lots of shady trees all around state park
Very beautiful beach with good swimming and locations with shade.
Solid low key spot for the sunset. Dirt parking lot.
Campgrounds were clean and scenic! Well-worth the stay.
State park on the ocean, excellent place to visit along the north shore.
We stopped here for lunch on our round the island trip. Beautiful views!
Visited friends nearby...but park and beach are beautiful !!
No grills or fire pits. Off the beaten path and good offer away from the city hustle.
Awesome campground such a nice place to stay.
Great beach! Very quiet and peaceful!
went in the morning on a weekday and when it just opened. beautiful, quiet, breezy.
A huge and beautiful park with camping and lots of beach access

This is absolutely one of my favorite places on the island.
Beautiful bay, park, and Goat Island to walk out to.
Currently closed due to COVID-19. Gates locked unable to get into park

Perfect!!!
Beautiful state park. Great atmosphere. Breath taking landscaping. More room to play with the family. You have to see it to believe it.
Nice, quiet place to get away and enjoy the beach.
There are public parking lots, toilets, showers, beaches, and chairs.
good to eat lunch
Nice state campsite by the beach, shower, wc. 10US/night. It is locked for the night, online reservation on the net. Then you can leave the car in front of the gate. Unfortunately, the local homeless (there are about 4,500 of them on Oahu) often steal cars. Do not lock the car!
I was going to set up a tent and camp, but I gave up because there were a lot of flies and ants and the smell of rotten nuts on the ground was a bit unpleasant. I like the sea.
Very nice, let's go back to Goat Island.
We made a camping reservation for 2 nights. Arriving an hour before the doors closed, they saw that the doors were closed. Sunday evening. no one answers the phone, no one can be found. We had to leave the car at a nearby campsite for safety, walk for half an hour with things to our tents. no one bothered to call us and tell us about the problems and that the doors would be closed
The name says it, great environment for recreation.
Mega Erlebnisse für einen Guten Preis und auch noch sehr nette Menschen .
Beim nächsten mal auf jeden Fall wieder dort .
In state country parks, you can book camps online and bring your own tents for camping (each camp can accommodate 6 people, even parking: within 2 tents, $12 a night for locals, $18 a night for non-locals).
I wanted to go to Goate Island on the opposite bank, so I visited at low tide, but there were still waves and the tide level, so I couldn't do it. I want to challenge again aiming at the high tide.
