Reviews of Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area
A great place for an easy hike, if you're okay with walking about 4.9 miles. It took a little over 2 hrs for us. It's beautiful, lush and peaceful here! You can see the H3 from part of the trail which was a surprise as well!
Average camping experience. Group sites with labeled picnic benches. No drive up or individual sites. Facilities are functional but poorly maintained. Bathroom stall door and shower heads were missing. Only some sites have fire pits.
Hiking trail is really pretty. Definitely a good spot for a day hike and a good camping spot if you’re ok with not having a fire pit and having to share an area with other groups.
Very nice area kept clean. Lots to explore here as this is the entrance to the Aiea Loop Trail. Keep driving up the hill to get to the trail head or chill here and have a nice outdoor picnic. Either way, it’s a great place to check out.
Please keep in mind that you have to drive through a neighborhood to access this area. Respect the residence beyond what you would in your own neighborhood. Show aloha!
Excellent place to do some exploring! See H3 from a distance or explore the B-24 crash site from 1944! This is a 5 mile hike, be sure to start at a decent time, give yourself 2-3 hours before sunset. There are narrow areas to pass so be mindful on where you step.
It's beautiful and quiet park for picnic and also for camping. On the top of that there is pretty good moderate family friendly hike length of 4.9 miles with the elevation of around 1300ft, you might feel some sprinkle of mist so make sure you have rain jacket good hiking shoes, water source and snack.
Beautiful hike, lots of parking. Moderate trail - but was 90% muddy with very slick areas throughout the entire trail. The addition of the mud and slick spots made the hike more challenging than I anticipated.
Beautiful hike! Lots of scenery. The last bit of the hike was a bit challenging. We were expecting a waterfall but it looks like you had to take another route to get there and it wasn't clear.
Clean, well maintained restrooms! Some of the walks are quite steep. Best to take your time and do a leasurely walk. Terrific views along the way
Amazing Ridge Hike! Also a nice loop trail if you are looking to do something less strenuous. Beautiful views of the city and ocean along the way. If you do the ridge hike, be prepared to have to break the trail a bit the further you go. Some very narrow areas with ropes, so you need to pay attention. Worth the amazing views!
The road in and the trailhead are both beautiful! I was looking forward to the hike and the time in the woods. However, we had 2 children under 5 with us and it wasn’t a good fit. Next time I visit, I’ll plan time to hike without the little ones. I hadn’t read any reviews that made it clear that a stroller or wagon cannot access the trails here so I’m letting people know.. enjoy the beautiful trails but don’t bring a stroller or wagon.
Great place to stop off and have lunch- bathrooms and tables were clean. Lots of chickens and roosters to watch.
Really fun trail! It's not too difficult and it's pretty cool up there. I went with my wife and we had lots of fun. It has a lot of good views. You can even see the pale highway.
We tried to camp here for the night in our stay at Oahu, unfortunately the light and the rain got the better of us and we stayed the night in the car instead. For campers – there are a some toilets and showers located here, but FYI you have to bring your own charcoal to cook food! There's not too many pictures of the campsites available so I've done my best and taken a few of them. Hopefully this'll help all campers out there!
Home to Aiea Loop Trail. Sign says it is 4.8 miles... They lied, it's 6. The state should mark the trail bc there are other cut offs that could get you lost. Nice scenic views. My kids did this hike 5 and 3 years old. Some muddy spots but overall easy hike.
Kea'iwa Heiau sits at the top of Aiea Heights Road in Aiea. It is a very popular park for hikers, tourists, kahu's, picnickers, dog walkers, campers, and anyone who wants to meditate in a peaceful setting surrounded by tons of trees, birds, and calming energy.
We frequent the heiau often and my husband uses the pavilions to conduct his Reiki, Haki'i, Sportsbetting classes, healing sessions, and psychic readings. Some halaus use the park for hula and other things. The pavilions on weekends are very popular so go early if you want to reserve one. The park opens at 7 a.m. but sometimes the caretaker will open up a bit earlier.
Bring tablecloths if you want to picnic there because the feral chickens poop on the benches and tables. We always have pareos to cover the seats and tables and we also bring a bottle of hand soap since there isn't any soap to wash your hands with there. I'd give it 5 stars if the tables and benches were hosed down periodically, but it never happens that I've seen.
Other than that it is a lovely place to visit and relax. Please be respectful and do not play around in the heiau itself. That is the area with the rock wallks. Do not move the rocks, leave things in the heiau, or otherwise disrespect it. This is a sacred area and should always be respected.
Last time I was here was 10 yrs.ago! Brings back old memories of my high school days! Used to cut class , back in the 70' ..smoke pakalolo and inhale Mother nature at her finest!
Now bringing my daughter and grandson to explore this magical adventure. He lasted 40 minutes before he started getting tired 😫 had to piggyback him back.
Made new friends along the way! Mr. Boar & Miss Chicken who photo bombed!
It's a really nice hike, but the main attraction as far as scenery goes, is the unique view of the highway. The surroundings on this hike looked more like California than lush Hawaii. However, we did this hike during the drought season (September). There are a lot of "Hawaiian Christmas trees", which I love, and also the invasive strawberry guava, which are yummy.
It says it takes two to three hours- It took us just a little under two.
Its clean and well maintained. The hike is simple and nothing adventurous. Simple hike, just a beautiful view of the state highway.
Camped over night on the state recreation area. Place was clean and tidy. Great views, wildlife and quiet. Easy access to the Aiea Loop trail.
Stunning hike. Moderate difficulty.
It's a pleasant, moderate hiking location. There aren't many views from the hike, but it is still enjoyable.
Great hike above H3. Just a little over 4.5 miles. Not too difficult.
Aloha Green cleans fun Historical
Takes my breath away they where Photography of a Child's One Year
Birth it was so natural peaceful
Hikers hugs from me 2 U from Hawaii
Beautiful hike, gorgeous scenery, plants, and animals. I 100% recommend it.
I made the mistake of starting out on the top entrance to the 'Aiea Loop Trail. If you start at the lower end of the loop, the first half would be downhill,a slightly grindy uphill, and the second half a pleasant downhill stroll. If you start at the top like I did, then the first half is a nice gentle uphill grade, but the second half will have a long downhill, then a long uphill section to get back to your car.
Well maintained trails, some phenomenal overlooks. Things can get a little muddy (it's Hawaii).
Bring bugspray for the lower portions of the trail.
Aiea Loop is an amazing hike. Rated as moderate but I would say it's pretty easygoing!
Beautiful Ridge hike, great for exploring. Gorgeous plants and a well maintained park. Short trails or longer options available.
One of the most spectacular places on Oahu. Centrally located high up where the temperature is always cool with a nice breeze blowing. Picnic structures, camp grounds, walking trails, rest rooms. The only draw back is the limited parking, of course you can always schedule visits during off peak hours. Definitely a nice place to relax for a couple of hours in a group or by yourself!
Very cool place to visit. Ancient ruines were there and a nice picnic place.
Nice liesure treck, lots of nature, spectacular views and a surprise from H3
Nice short out and back hike
High atop Aiea Heights, this State Rec/Park is home to a healing Heiau, Aiea Loop Trail, large picnic pavilions, and outdoor bbq grills.
A very nice short hike - beautiful scenery
Very popular hiking loop of about 5 miles. A little more challenging than a beginner level, but not too strenuous.
If you like hiking this is the spot. Just over 4 miles of awesome terrain of covered forest. Be sure to wear some type of a boot as certain areas are rugged.
Did the Loop Trail with Loretta and two of our neices. Did it 55 years ago when I was in the 6th grade. Got to see what was left of the Japanese aircraft that went down during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Back in 1964 it was still a plane but today its just sheets of metal.
Distance and difficulty was perfect for me.
I am 65 yrs old male with height anxiety that’s the reason for 4 stars.
One of my all time favorite hikes
Amazing trail, takes a couple hours, reccomend hiking sticks. Great experience!
Nice shady 5 mile hike. Dog friendly
Nice area featuring the Aiea loop trail and a picnic area
The made the Aiea loop very accessible. Nice parking, tables, and overall maintenance is great! The loop train is about 2 miles and very doable for many! Even though it has some elevation, but it also has few benches where you can rest and enjoy beautiful views. And the views indeed beautiful!
Relaxing and peaceful environment and views... 🤙💕 …
An amazing place to hike with the family. And geocache.
This was the most amazing hike I've ever been on. You can hear and see many different kinds of birds along the way and the plant life changes significantly depending on your elevation. Best of all, the views are absolutely breathtaking.
It's not too bad in terms of a challenge but I imagine it's quite treacherous if it's been raining, with all of the clay. It's mostly shaded and had a pleasant breeze.
Good for hiking. Sometimes muddy, sometimes not. Lots of chickens.
Super fun hike! It was very pretty at the top where you could see the H-3. You could also see one of the planes that crashed during WW2 which I thought was amazing! Definitely would go again, and would recommend to others who have 2-3 hours to kill. It was a long hike, but definitely pays off. I've heard that during summer or fall there's tons of guavas!
Probably my favorite hike on Oahu. It can be leisurely, or you can run it for a good workout. It’s well-maintained, with beautiful views. Be careful when parking though. Break-ins are not uncommon, and if parking is full and you park on the side of the road, you will get a ticket.
Fantastic hike. Some great views. Mostly shaded. Red clay gets slippery quick
Very nice and peaceful location. A lot of photographers use this area for photoshoots as the lines of trees and shaded lighting look great in photos. It's also a popular spot for hikers and people who want to hang out in a park. Parking is tough and very limited. The park staff are nice enough to drive around the park before they close to remind you to pack up before they close the gate.
Great easy hike ! It's a little long but definitely worth the views and peace that comes with most of the hike.
Great park and hiking area. However, there are a limited number of parked stalls, so if they're full, you may as well come back another day. My friends and I (and probably 20-30 other cars) parked along the side of the road near the trailhead. It looked like a safe, legal area to park and we were not blocking anything. Still, we all got parking tickets. Where we parked, there were no signs that said "no parking." There were only some small signs in front of the parking stalls that said "park only in marked stalls." When there are cars parked in those stalls, those signs are barely visible unless you're on foot or already parked in those stalls. Most people driving past probably wouldn't be able to see them. It felt sneaky and misleading. The city probably made $1000 in tickets that day
Fun day hiking with the family. The total trail is 4.4 miles, which is too much for us. It's a pretty trail with a lot of beautiful views. It's also muddy and can be slippery. It can get a little rigorous, so bring enough water. Be sure to bring a plastic bag and slippers for after the hike.
Area Loop Trail is a nice peaceful trail. Signs say don't start your hike after 4:00 pm of you won't be able to finish by closing time.
Loving this place, Calm, relaxing park with amazing bird sounds; hens, roosters running about. Best prepare with bug repellent. Nice spot for a quick drive into nature to get away from the city life also great picnic area. Love the way it drizzels and the sun is still out. Truly a nice piece of paradise. Haven't hiked yet but I am sure it won't be disappointing. Enjoy. Please ask permission to the spirits to enter the Heiau if u are going to go in . Be respectful as it is their home and don't touch anything. Also don't go to the far right back, as it is a even more sacred spot. Then when u come out give thanks for going in. This is a great spot for healing energy. Mahalo.
This is one of the best hikes on Oahu. Cool and breezy on a warm, sunny day, there's lots to see. Big jungle trees, moss, ferns, lehua blossoms, downed aircraft from WWII. Wow! 4.25mi loop with just one short .25mi steep uphill climb.
Awesome sand bar for snorkeling and shallow boats.
Great moderate hike, lots to see
Very easy yet long hike. I would recommend doing the trail in reverse because it seems the hardest part is right at the tail end of the hike. Cellular reception is also great even amidst the forests ups and downs.
It was my 1st time there and I've been on living on this island since I was born and never got a chance to see it! It was a fun experience! Good thing I didnt hear drums and torches in the middle of the night
Keaiwa Heiau State Park is a beautiful and peaceful park to visit and spend a few hours there picnicking with family and friends, it's definitely a must see!
Lots of picnic areas with tables and benches, with restrooms too...The hiking trails are sweet, surrounded with breath taking panoramic views! A must for the whole family, but keep a close watch on the little ones, the trail gets a bit narrow in some areas! Bring along lots of drinking water (to stay hydrated), bug repellant (especially for the mosquitoes), sun screen, and wear shoes that you won't mind getting muddy on the trails, also your slippahz (for after the hike), and some extra clothes for the little ones (maybe for yourself too). I grew up in the Aiea area, and this park never ceases to amaze me! Thank You Lord for creating such beauty for all of us to Enjoy...
For camping it is a pretty nice place. there’s a designated place for a fire, not so dirty toilets, cold showers.
the campgrounds are pretty roomy. some are under trees and others on flat land. there’s no view of the city from the tents.
We found strawberry guava!! It was so delicious. The walk through the park was also lovely and had a big picnic area!
We took 4 hours to complete the loop with plenty of stops for looking at the scenery. Many fallen trees - like others have said, take extra shoes. If you get muddy, there is a hose bib near the campground.
Great place to stretch your legs, while hiking an excellent trail. Big Mahalo to D the property manager in charge, your years of overseeing (over 2 decades) show in the care and conduct you afforded to us on our trip.
Beautiful trail!
Great family trail. Hawaii No Ka Oi!
I did the Aiea loop trail in the midst of a nice rainfall. Like most parks this ones showing it's age and lack of funding. If you don't mind finding your way around a few fallen trees on the trail it's worth it for the views.
Awesome shaded hike. Camping very dark. Visitors don't seem to be allowed at the camp sites, they close the front gate early at night
Breathtaking views and wonderful place for overnight camping and hiking!
Beautiful long hike. Not too hard but if you're scared of heights dont go. It gets pretty scary in a few spots. Kids loved it.
The park is good, the loop trail is a great trail for those that want to sweat but not get over exerted. I've hiked it 3 times now and I love it.
It was a great hike/run. Don't really recommend running after it rained a little but it was still a nice hike/run.
Alot of school & fun memories rolling into Keaiwa Park (Aiea Heiau)... Such a relaxing and beautiful mountain views too
Good place for walking for a couple of hours
Campsite 1a was seperate from the others, and a bit farther from the restroom. 1b is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Very quiet after the gates closed.
Aiea Loop Trail is a lovely, easy hike and well worth a couple hours off your time. Friendly for family hiking and hiking with the doggo.
Pretty place, need a little bit of sprucing up. People hiking and enjoying the picnic areas, parking area full.
Nice, enjoyable hike, except the last quarter, too muddy, and too uphill after the long trek.
Very nice and secluded park. Great for photo sets. Shaded trails, clean and well maintained.
I love this area. Close to my house. Some parts of the year get guavas. Eucalyptus trees make the air smell good. Just feels good to get outside.
Good safe place, lock ur doors, no valuables inside the car. Bring extra shoes or slippahs due to mud at the bottom if u go the whole loop. Alot of fallen trees lately.
Omg this park is such a cool place to spent the day and also the night. Yes they have camping spot available for booking
Great place to get away from the busyness
Nice hike, beautiful views of the cities down below and ocean 🌊 of course. …
Small with picnic tables and restrooms. Most people visit for the trailheads to the Aiea Loop Trail. Free entrance and free parking.
Nice little park connected to the Aiea Loop trail. Picnic areas as well as bathrooms on site.
It's a beautiful historical landmark. There's a trail to hike, a beautiful heiau, and a small pavilion to eat and rest. .
...great place for a picnic...cool trades
Non-strenuous hike...however...over runned by feral chickens..
Beautiful easy hiking in a gorgeous setting. Can be muddy! Wear good mud shoes!
A beautiful hike. Take the loop trail, or for a greater challenge you can head up toward the ridge trail from the top of the loop.
Great hike, very easy, suitable for dogs, kids, older folks, everyone. View is unbeatable. See for yourself :)
Nice views when driving.
Fun hike, but need to be in shape 5 miles of lots of hills. Spectacular views..
Long hiking trails with amazing scenic outlooks, if you can find them. Trail is not clearly marked. Easy but long.
Nice place to hike, but keep kids close. Some parts of the trail get narrow.
Fun hike beautiful views can get a little slippery so be safe
So peaceful and beautiful. Good place to take your lunch and eat up there. Born and raised and still live in Aiea, never get tired of this place.
This is a sacred Hawaiian Heiau, so please give it the respect it deserves. It's beautiful serene place where you can hike, camp, and picnic.
It’s not a hiking trail and wasn’t made for that. It was made from Hawaiians and you would be killed if you disrespect. Take a rock home from anywhere of Hawaii to the mainland and you’ll get badluck!
This was a really good hike it was a medium length compared to so of the others on the island it has great views
Great hike. Sketchy people cruising in the parking lot so dont leave any valuables in your vehicle.
Great family hike. Not too hard, but not too easy as to make it boring. Beautiful views of Halawa Valley
Moderate to easy hike. Well marked and great views under a jungle Canopy
Sometimes slippery overall moderately easy hike with amazing views.
Serene place of significant spiritual importance to Native Hawaiians. There are signs asking that the site be respected and left as it is found.
Great place to hike with family and friends.
Wonderful beautiful hiking an camping! Very clean ! I enjoy it on the regular!
Great hike and not very difficult with some great views of downtown and pearl harbor
Nice and easy hike 🚶♂️ 👌 …
Love this hiking trail!! Great view of the H-3 from the top of the trail

Peaceful and cool. A great area to relax.
Nice hiking. Free parking
Awesome off trail hikes!! Beautiful waterfall
Great views and easy enough for kids. Wear some good trails, but not a must.
A great leisurely hike that is perfect for beginners with an amazing view at the end.
A great place to hike
The Aiea loop trail was a great hike, and we saw some tiny pigs!
Beautiful hike, way up on the mountain
The Aiea Loop is a decent trail. Easily followed, but kind of crowded.
Gorgeous fresh crisp air.
Great hike and goes in a loop so you don't backtrack
A good place to walk for exercise or pleasure. Quiet, beautiful scenery and clean facilities.
great hiking trails, bring an extra water. it is longer than you think.
This is one of the best kept Heiau's I have seen on Oahu. Please remember to be respectful and bring your offering.
Nice hike but some one get the windows broke and I don't see camara and nothing so...
So close to the city but such a peaceful getaway to enjoy nature in Honolulu.
Always love hiking the Aiea Loop Trail. A great routine!
Great place for pics if you are visiting or local to the area. A must see.
Great running trail, also has facility at the beginning of the trail
Great trail, very well maintained and marked.
Not very scenic but a good walk for the entire family.
Literally saw chickens, cats, and wild boars on the paved road😂 …
Scenic cool. Good workout
Nice. Lots of wild chickens. A little steep.
Love hiking here perfect for all families to enjoy
Great for picnics, weddings and hiking. Spectacular views.
Hands on you get to see and feel the metamorphosis of rock/lava into an iron rich earthen clay

Tolle Anlage, ein schöner hike Trail
You have disturbed a sacred place. It is a very comfortable place where you can calm your mind. There were many houses on the way to go, and each house had many trees such as papaya, avocado, and starfruit. It was fun to find.
It is good to see Pearl Harbor while driving without getting off and walking. You can even go to the top of the mountain by car, and the view of the mountain top is also good.
I didn't seem to be able to go by THE bus, so I joined the tour.
I was worried about the security since it was in the mountains and there weren't many people, so I was relieved that there were other people on the tour.
It was such a sacred place! I'm glad I went.
It was a mysterious place that made me want to stay there forever.
It was a sacred place. As soon as I got out of the car, I felt the power so much that I got goosebumps😁This is a place I want to cherish 😃
It is a place of prayer for Hawaiian people, and it is a power spot in Japanese style.
In the olden days, this place was used to prepare medicinal herbs and acted like a hospital, so it is said to be a place where people pray for healing of illnesses.
A very peaceful and refreshing heiau.
I want to visit with respect.
Really beautiful, serene and nice place
A rental car is necessary because it is located in the mountains ahead of the residential area❗
It was an ancient Hawaiian religious site, and there are still ruins here, and it has become known as a power spot. There is also a trail course, so you can also take a nature walk.
It's a place where you can get a lot of power!
Rabbit horns, it became a solemn feeling
Very quiet, a great place to relax and meditate!
It is a nice and beautiful beach... You can enjoy this landscape.
It is said to be a sacred place.
Climb up the residential area by car and it is at the entrance of the park.
Shared Keaiwa Heiau States Recreation area with our friends from Melbourne, Australia.
I think it's a sacred place, so I want to watch it quietly so as not to be rude.
It is a gentle mountain road that is not too steep. Highly recommended!!!
It's raining☔
excellent view.
