Such a beautiful place for a peaceful, relaxing Mother's Day! We love exploring our state parks and this was our first time to this one.
They have plenty of picnic tables and adirondack chairs by the lake, as well as several picnic shelters throughout the park. One of the picnic shelters was near where we settled by the lake for the afternoon, close to a nice, large grassy area for playing and playground equipment for younger children.
We didn't hike any of the trails on this visit but they have several ranging from 0.4 mile up to over 5 miles long. My daughter and I enjoyed some canoeing - got pretty close to an egret, just missed a turtle, and thankfully did not encounter any gators. Although, we were told by the ranger that they are more scared of us than we are of them.

Local treasure! Well maintained and clean. My family visited for the first time yesterday. The lake, creeks and babbling streams were absolutely beautiful. Great picnic areas and plenty of options for family fun with cabin rentals, playground, paddle boats, canoes, etc. Plenty of space for frisbee or other backyard sporting options. Our dog loved it. Parking lot is right beside the picnic area so it's very convenient to get supplies.

We loved our RV camping experience at Poinsett!! They have awesome walking/biking trails with beautiful streams. Lots of hills for people in search of more challenging trails. The staff are all very friendly and the campgrounds are well maintained. Perfect family fun!!! We can’t wait to go back again for a longer stay!

Secluded, Truly-Detached, Hiker. This state park has hookups, sites for those wanting to get back in touch with nature and cleanup in-between. Online booking information was right on point when selecting a suitable site with full disclosures up front on what to expect. The facilities were clean and maintained and we were greater warmly each day by the Camp Host(ess), the park members ensures we were safe and had our necessities before moving on to ready for new visitors. We were treated with aireal maneuvers and training expertise by the neighboring Shaw Air Force Base during the day but enjoy nature's serenity at night.
Walking and exploring trails were well kept, color coded, and clearly marked with signs. Roads can be tight in some places for those with larger vehicles. Expect bumps and use caution as many two-lane roads are only as large as single lane would be. Great staff is present to of needed, emergency numbers are posted at office and information online was accurate to layout and his of operation. Be sure to bring your State Park Passport to visit this hidden gem in the heart of South Carolina.

Private wooded spaces with full RV hookups. A ton of trails to take. Each RV space has a picnic table and fire ring. We absolutely loved this place!
Sheila Marquez
Surprisingly beautiful! I was looking for a well kept mature old growth forest. And lots of hiking trails. Loved the colored paint as tags for the various trails that correspond to stickers in the gift shop as you complete each one. Great starting place for getting some miles on the Palmetto Trail too!!
Susan Pizzarello
Serene, peaceful place. Camping, kayak rental, kids playground areas, mini museum at welcome center, nice Adirondack chairs along the water. Nice walking areas.
Jaime Wright
This was our 2nd visit to Poinsett State Park on our return trip home from Florida. So glad we stopped again! Great mountain bike and hiking trails. Camp sites were level and clean. We were in site #29 this time with electric and water on gravel.
Lesa Bondesen
Spent the weekend camping and hiking. Beautiful hiking trails for all skill levels. Camping and tent areas are small and quant. Roads can definitely use some work though. Had a great time and one more park stamp in our book.
Paul Stone
Nice park, great mountain bike trails but infrastructure is seriously lacking. Narrow roads and dirt paths make navigation with a trailer difficult.
Rosemary Villatoro
The staff here are absolutely amazing! The park is very peaceful and lots to do. I can’t wait to return for the next adventure!
Paul Tedder
Great place for camping but not much more to do. Hiking trails looked robust, but due to rain we were not able to explore.
James Pulley
Really nice park with plenty of things to do. There's a good variety of trails, plenty of places to sit and have a picnic, a nice kids playground, and canoes to rent out for the pond.
Kalieb Benge
Mine and my daughter's first time traveling here first time to South Carolina. Just want to say awesome place and Ranger that works the office very helpful and attentive and takes his time explaining everything to you lots and lots of trails to hike I believe there is 25 MI at least of trails nice size fishing Lake and they have boats you can rent as well kayaks and canoes and paddle boats small waterfall that is very pretty and then there is also a nice little Spillway that comes off the end of the lake flows down into a little creek. You can just come for the day or they have camping spots for RVs and they also have four beautiful cabins you can rent that's what me and my daughter stayed in very reasonably priced.

A beautiful place ...we loved camping there and we did an amzing kayak run at sparkleberry swamp...(if I remember correctly the name..)
Sight is beautiful...highly recommend to give it a shot !!! The camping site was clean and family friendly !!!!
Donald Ames
My favorite mountain biking park short of going up to the mountains. Wide variety of trails both technical and flow. You can get 20-30 miles of biking in with minimal doubling up -- especially when combined with adjacent Manchester State Forest.
Teresa S
The campground itself is nice, big lots. The reason I gave it a 3 star is the roads. They are ROUGH! Holes! And if you meet a camper or vehicle coming in or going out, there's no room to pass. Somebody has to backup. These my friends are two way paths!
Delisa Wenger
Staff was very accommodating. We wanted to hike the palmetto trail so this was a great place to camp the night before. We had a group and stayed in one of the primitive group sites, which was very nice. #4 had a great fire pit. We really enjoyed our stay.

I feel very torn about this visit to this state park. I felt this park had a ton to do, very peaceful and beautiful. But, I went to go on a hike today, and I was told by a staff member which trails to take, etc. Well, I was not informed that other parts of trails were closed, not to mention had trees down, and that some were so muddy they were impassible. I hiked 3/4 of the Green trail, and all of a sudden, there was a huge blockade there. It reverted you to the Laurel trail. I had to walk that entire trail, no signs posted for length or exit areas, and then exit finally by the front entrance of the camp. Then walk back to parking. The Laurel trail was so muddy that I fell about 5 ft, and had to get first aid after my 2 mile hike. I was not told about closed trail, the trees down, or conditions of the trails by the front staff. I was rather upset when returning to the front because I would not have hiked knowing the dangerous conditions. The staff seemed surprised by how bad it was; in my opinion, if you run the park, you should inspect areas to ensure they are safe for guests, which didn’t happen in this case. The front desk person seemed rather nonchalant about the whole thing, yet I had massive cuts on my legs and had to have her give me first aid.
Regardless, there is a lot to do and some scenery. The trails aren’t too scenic, more so for amenity purposes. I enjoy photography and didn’t find the trails too photogenic. But, very big park with lots to do. If you have a family, then it would be worth a day trip!
Cassandra Gaskins
Love love love this state park! As a lowcountry gal, I feel like this is a little part of the mountains when I come here. ❤ beautiful trails to walk or bike, pond with boats to rent, cabins and camping available as well...but the grist mill is my favorite.
Jane Marple
Beautiful calming area. Campsites are clean, spacious and very level. Bathrooms are clean. Has 2 showers. Only drawback is no sewer. There is a dump station. Lots to do many hiking trails, canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boating. Plenty of picnic area with playground for kids. Firewood is available you will need to stop ice in town. Definitely return colors are starting to turn, beautiful scenery.
Brian Mecham
Pretty state park. Great trails for hiking. A nice playground for the little ones. A small, beautiful lake for fishing and exploring in a canoe or kayak. The reservable shelters have grills where one can build a fire or use charcoal to cook with.
Jacqueline Burto
I had a wonderful time mountain biking these very well marked trails. It was clean and beautiful. They had some amazing views. I would highly recommend going here and hiking or biking. I saw people fishing in the pond and there is an old ruins of a mill as you are walking towards the office which is very beautiful. And the trails had numerous crossovers with very well-maintained bridges over the waterways. They have camping and cabins to rent which I have not yet done.
Michael Looper
Just before you get to Sumter, SC there’s a park “Poinsett” park that’s a very nice park with several hiking trails, a pond tent camping or bring your RV. They also have cabins you can rent. You can take a canoe or kayak out on the pond. Very peaceful park, it’s worth a look if you want some quiet time.
Manon World Traveler
Today we decided to go for a hike in this park. It was great. There are so many options they are also pretty well indicated.
First when you arrive you have to pay an admission. We didn’t have the cash so we went to the office to get some change. It’s 3$ per adult. At the front of the car you have a box with an envelope where you put the money in.
Then you have so many awesome spots to take picture. I’m so in love with this place.
We will definitely go back for longer hikes.
David Goerner
Great place to go for hiking the many trails available. Would like to return to hike the several I had no time for
Jennifer Bonovich
This state park is highly recommended! The trails are very well marked and the map is easy to interpret. The Park Ranger, Rhett, was very informative and knew the park very well. We camped in a primitive site and it was picturesque and well-maintained. Recommended for everyone...whether you are hiking or camping for the first time or are an experienced adventurer.
William Conner
A beautiful park with a playground for children. Lots of hiking trails; most with moderate shade. I found the trail map (get a copy from the office) to be excellent ... easy to follow. Highly recommend a visit to this park !!!
Matthew Mursewick
Absolutely beautiful park! By far my favorite place to go for a hike in the midlands!
Joanna Tine
I tried to follow All Trails but ended up making my own loop from Knot to Coquina (which was flooded) to Laurel (where the bridge was out) to Splice, which got me back to the lot. Pretty lake, nice marked trails, good variation of elevation. Overall, a pleasant afternoon hike.
Adrienne Luedicke
One of my favorite state parks in SC. Friendly staff, beautiful trails, nice campsites with clean bathrooms. There are also a few plaques with interesting information about the park and a nice sized playground. I definitely will be coming back.
Adam Moore
A very cool, remote South Carolina State Park with camping available.
Charlie Chapman
Loved it. They have cabins, camping, lots of campsites. You just need to come check it out for yourself Big Lake fishing at all here plenty of trails to go hiking.
Sarah M.
We truly enjoyed our stay. The cabins are in a beautiful setting and the peace and quiet is just what we needed. When we did want something to do there was plenty to choose from with awesome trails and beautiful sights we will definitely be returning to explore again.
Misty Simmons
Beautiful State Park, with plenty of trails. Make sure you have bug spray, for the gnats. Really enjoyed this visit.
Brittany Williams
Very pretty park. Not much in the area... but that’s why one goes camping, right? Great trails and a little pond to rent paddle boats or kayaks. Small swimming area and fishing spot. We stayed in site 13 which we don’t suggest staying in on a rainy weekend. Our site flooded to about a foot high. We went on a very eventful weekend also, with lots of not so great activity going on. While we can’t blame the campground for the crackheads staying next to us (this seemed to be common amongst many of the people staying) the cops showed up once (apparently their car was stolen)and they stole our canopy. We love camping because we feel comfortable letting our kids be kids... but we weren’t able to feel super comfortable or secure here. I wouldn’t go again because of the area/ type of people who were staying there but memories were definitely made.
Craig Leduc
We visited because of the South Carolina inter-scholastic cycling league's mountain bike race. It's a beautiful park- though relatively remote.
jm lindley
Mountains of the midlands is a fitting name for this park. Maybe not what you would expect for the area. Lots of mountainous scenery, creeks and small lakes in this area as we hiked and biked through the forest. They have lots of great trails. More than we could do in a few days. All that we went on were well signed and marked very well. Splice and Laurel trails were very peaceful and great for wildlife viewing. Half of coquina was flooded and unpassable while the back half was nice but somewhat hilly. Multiple signs are posted about the flooded coquina area so it doesn't surprise you. Scout, River Road and most of the whippoorwill trails that we rode were wide and level good for biking. We also biked cowasee. It's mostly narrow and hilly and a better experience at a slower hiking pace. We used some of the other trails as connections to get to different trails. We seen lots of interesting little things on the trails including a variety of mushrooms, lizards, spiders and the remains an old rusted out moonshine still off the palmetto trail. Broken glass jugs and all. The day use part of the park has a small swimming area in a small lake with a spillway. It's good for kayaks canoes and peddle boats. They have them for rent or use your own. There are some ruins of an old mill that was once on the site prior to the park. A small park store with snacks and souvenirs available. The attendent was very friendly and informative of the area. The campground is up a narrow single lane road with not much space on the sides. Keep your fingers crossed that another camper isn't coming your way. The campground is dirt road and sites. Some are upgraded and have packed gravel as ours did. Most are level with plenty of space. Bring something for ants. They were everywhere. We had a great time. We'll try to get back sometime to finish the trails we didn't get to.
Richard Mallett
Great park for those living on the coastal plain looking for a bit of hill-like terrain with their hike. Couldn't recommend this state park more. Campground is spacious and tidy, trails are well maintained, the diversity of flora and fauna will amaze you!
Lee Gandy
Great trails for mountain biking. Good picnic shelters. Nice place to try out kayaking or paddle boarding to see if you like it (it's not a large lake at all, but it does have a great ambience.
Cat Barber
This is a hidden gem! The state park is out in the middle of nowhere and we loved it! We went in January and had no worries about the traffic flowing around the campsite, it was very lite with campers. Since there's so much I'm going to put in bullet form for the highlights:
- Tent/Campers/Cabins are all ways you can stay the night here with bathrooms like any other state parks
- Pull through campsites for campers
- Grills located at camp sites but not a bad idea to bring your own
- No playgrounds but LOTS of room to play in the multiple fields they have
- Over seven trails to explore all over the park. Some trails are flat, some are within the hill/mountain areas. Really good for anyone who likes mountain biking
- Some of the trails connect to the Palmetto Tail (the Palmetto Tail is a planned 425 mile long foot and mountain bike trail in SC. Starting from the Oconee County mountain to the Intercostal Waterway in Charleston County.)
- Small gift shop but they do sale ice cream!
- Kayak and paddle board rentals
- Small ponds to over look
- Water fall close by to the main office, a must see!
- Many sheltered areas to have a party or BBQ
- Overflow parking if you have more than two vehicles staying on your campsite
- Only the people with Verizon had phone service.
- Free wifi at the office
Over all this was a great park. We enjoyed our stay and will come back someday. It made you feel like you were in the middle of nowhere and was so quiet. Check this place out!

Came here with our RV and really enjoyed ourselves. Fun swimming area in the lake. Pretty small, but kids love it. Rented paddle boats, and they offered canoes too. We mountain biked for a few hours and the trails were great. The RV area was clean and well marked. Would highly recommend staying here.
Roger Perkins
This is an awesome little park. They have several trails that you can walk that give a fun experience and great views. There is a small pond and Creek that run through the area. And the bathroom facilities are very nice and very spotless. You can fish here too for small fish if you like. And there is camping and cabins for rent. It seems like a fun place. I've been here a couple times and I see myself coming back for more in the future!
Dirk Aydlette
Great park. Took a minute to get my bearings as no employees were on duty that I saw. Once I figured it out we had a great walk on the Hi Knot. Could use more signage. Hi Knot ended at the road we took coming in so we walked on the road back to the car. With better signage would have known we could get on another trail to finish up. Regardless, will go back for the other trails. Very much a mountain feel to it.
Bee Rimi
I didn't get to see too much as we went on a spur of the moment trip and wasn't prepared; however, what I did see was absolutely beautiful. I liked seeing the ruins of old buildings and I can't wait to go on the trails. There's was a few families having a picnic and swimming in the water as well as a person on a kayak. I even saw some bikers. If you're afraid of spiders or fascinated by them keep your eyes open for those yellow orb spiders. They aren't hard to miss.
Dorothy Knight
The park is beautiful. There is a playground and a little waterfall not too far from the playground. The trails are well maintained and suitable for the novice hiker with young kids. There's a cute little gift shop and the facilities were surprisingly clean. There were historical plaques that reveal some important South Carolinian history.
Phillip Guyton
A true gem of a park highly recommend it
Brian Odgers
One of my favorite state parks. Plenty of hiking trails for all skill levels. Primitive, tent, RV and rentable cabins available. Picnic shelters, scenic overlooks, and plenty of chairs by the lake to relax in.
Melanie Melanie
Love the Mtn Bike trails! Very peaceful place for Kayaking, Mtn Biking, Camping. Small (new) playground for children. They also have camp sites and cabins. We ride our bikes here twice a week and love it.
J Bec
Really surprising state park tucked away in the Midlands. Lots of trails for hiking and mountain biking. As lowcountry residents we were excited to see hills and scenic overlooks so close to home. It was chilly when we visited so we did not take advantage of the swimming and canoeing on the lake but it looks great. There are picturesque ruins on an historic mill on the property.
Susan Grogan
Great hike but take gnat spray! The gnats were brutal near the lake but much improved on the trails. Remember to prepare to "pack in, pack out". No visible trash cans were found at the picnic shelters.
Stephen Howard
We really love Poinsett State park. We enjoy the campground, the hiking trails and the Lake. We do a lot of kayaking and fishing when we are there. They even have some family activities on the Long Holiday weekends.
My only issues are the roads and lack of items at the Ranger office. ROADS: they are bad. Lots of potholes and very narrow roads.
RANGER OFFICE: Wish they had a couple of small items for sale (Ketchup , Mustard, Syrup, ETC...) We forgot something and the drive to the nearest store is about 10 miles away. Also, the don't have ice for sale, so the same thing, if you need ice, 10 mile drive.
Besides these two thing, we love this place and will be back.
Erica Marabella
Beautiful park if you're looking to do some hiking make sure you were comfortable shoes and bring your bug spray
Exploration Florida
Phenomenal hike not hardcore, but fun never the less. Nice views and truly awesome experience.

Very nice park for my first SC State Park! The leaves were still beautiful too on Black Friday. It was pretty busy with many guests enjoying nature. There were many trails and I loved how cute the trail markers were, however we got a little mixed up at some of the intersections. I loved the numbers on the map corresponding to the numbers on the posts though. That was very helpful.
TriggerHappyTexan H.
Great trails to hike. Lots of water and there's a swimming area. Wildlife hasn't been scared off either.
Crystl Zimmer
This park is just a short drive from Columbia and seems pretty cool! The trails were well maintained, not too busy, and there were plenty of miles of them! Great signage and trail map too! It looked like they may have some kayaks and paddle boats for rent and the cabins sound luxurious. Can't wait to return!
Clifford Brooks
This is a great place to explore the outdoors with your family! Fishing, canoeing, bike trail etc.
Randi Hopkins
My husband and I stayed this past weekend and we had a blast! We were tent camping and the campsites are nice and shaded. They have water at each site the bathrooms were nice and were cleaned everyday. The trails were beautiful and there’s plenty of firewood to gather. The only thing I didn’t really like is that the campsites are pretty close together. All in all 10/10 could recommend.
Brian Dallas
Quiet campground with about 50 spots. Both RV and tent sites. Some with full hook ups (water and electric). Very quiet with just a few amenities and Ranger support. Recommend reserving ahead of time.
Billy Mueller
The park was mostly maintained, but there were several places where bridges were down. This made it more difficult to get across in some places without getting wet. If they fix the bridges it would be a fantastic park to visit.
Kelly mcgregor
What a beautiful peaceful place so quite trails very well marked. Will definitely be back.
Scott Kaplan
Went tent camping there. Nice lake for swimming and fishing and small boats. Hikes 10.2 miles on the lake trails. Definitely recommend it.
Katrina Palmer
We went late winter. We enjoyed the walks with our dogs. Very pleasant and quiet. Just what we needed. I look forward to staying there when our S.C. weather cools a bit..
Brennan Gandy
Great place to ride for all skill levels. This place will surprise you. Make sure to get a good look at the trail map before beginning. There are so many trails that you can come again and again and try something new every time. There is also a nice air conditioned bathroom at the parking lot. The roadway is filled with potholes on the drive up so drive with care.
Charles Hall
One of our favorite places to go explore the creation. Great campgrounds & awesome hiking/biking trails. The little lake is fun to kayak or paddle board in. Lots of wildlife and the staff are very friendly.
Brana Ostojic
Great park with several trails you can choose from. Make sure you bring bug repellent!
Samantha LaForm
We camped the weekend here at site 5 with our two dogs in a 17' travel trailer. Very impressed with the campsite and surprised there were so many vacant spots. Very roomy sites that are well shaded. The road in was pretty rough and tight so I would recommend anyone coming with a larger travel trailer or RV get a pull through site as it may be difficult to back in otherwise. Bathrooms were clean. Camp host was very nice! This has the feel of a primitive site, so definitely come prepared with what you need. Lots of different bugs around, as expected. The area is heavily wooded, so bringing bug spray and an outdoor fan to help detour them is a good idea. Thankfully there were not many mosquitoes! Campground overall was quiet and peaceful.
Laura Rogers
Beautiful! Lots of trails, lots to see, swimming area, and more. Also, clean and well stocked restrooms in the campground .
Shawn McKee
This is a lovely little out of the way state park. The pond has a nice small swimming area. The cabins are very cute. We were in cabin 5 which is just up the hill from the playground but still feels private. The other 4 are a mile away in a cul de sac.
BC Blues
Nice mountain bike trails. Well maintained and nicely designed natural trails. Can ride these well drained trails even in the rain.
Torri
Gorgeous park with beautiful trails. Really makes you feel like you're in the mountains. The campground gets quite busy on the weekends but there's plenty to do. They have kayak and paddle boat rentals.
Ellen McGrory
Roads were terrible. The sites were nice and the restroom was very clean. The trail and trail map were excellent. Some of the rangers were less than helpful. Austin was fine and the camp host was great.
John Becker
Nice and quiet, except for Tuesdays when the nearby military base does live fire practice.
But seriously it is a very nice park and campground.
PS V
Visiting friends in the area and decided to check it out. Wonderful scenery and walking trails
Nicole
A great place to go hiking. Trails are clearly marked. Some spots are narrow but still easily passible.
Teresa Crumley
Beautiful park. Lots of trails for the choosing. Trails are well marked and maps are available inside the park office. Rangers were very knowledgeable and helpful in determining the best camping sites too. Kayaking, biking, and hiking gives you plenty to do during your stay. Campground was almost empty during most of our stay...Tuesday thru Saturday in mid November. Overall very enjoyable place to visit. We will definitely return.
cujo dogg
Loved the park. Great trails cool little lake an waterfall.
Crystal Bryan
Took a 4.5 mile hike while visiting family in SC. Trails were well maintained and it's simply a beautiful place!
Bird theword
Loving the cabin with some friends, very low-key only a few other cabins nearby and they are decently far I would guess two acres away, the cabin inside is suprisngly very nice and furnished by handcrafted furniture, the table, chairs, live seat, lamps and much more is handmade out of wood, very nice. The shower is also much nicer than lost hotels, the shower water strength and nice and strong. Tall roof feels legit, so is the screened in back porch with it's on handmade table and chairs plus a picnic table.
lorenzo frausto
Many trails to explore even though they merged and became confusimg at times, campin was relaxing amd quiet, everyone respected park rules
Brittany Matheson
Beautiful little spot for a day trip or weekend camping. Paddle boat and small fishing boat rentals available. Life vests for adults, children, and toddlers.
Paul S
It was a very wet weekend when we tried to stay so your experience might differ. The campground is pretty much dirt and leaves. The drainage isn't good and several of the sites were flooded. The bathrooms were clean and warm so I gave a star back. Fire ring was rusted out and dangerous.
Ian Reddout
Beautiful trails and cabins. Perfect for hiking and biking. A small trail system that connects and offers a lot of fun loops for hiking and biking. Cabins offer everything you could want while still enjoying a rustic camping experience.
Coleen
Very nice campground! If you love nature and a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day routines, great place to go. Quiet, safe place to stay and kids seem to be happy, and can explore walking or small hiking trips, this is a nice State park to go too. Other campers are considerate, and park rangers are always around for any help, only drawback, you have to go to office to use WiFi. Peaceful!!
Barbara Dibartolo
We love taking walks with our dog their. Beautiful area.
Nicole Reynolds
We rented a paddle boat, went swimming, and bought ice cream. The kids, and our dog loved it, and it was very relaxing too!
kristy mercer
Beautiful park. Hiking trails were nice. Kids playground now.
Kimberly Craver
Great place for a hike. Trails were marked and easy to navigate through. Will definitely go back.
Ramona Long
Very nice place. Enjoyed every minute of it with my children and family. Nice swimming area also very clean just need more trash cans. Can't wait to go back and walk the trails.
Shannon Kaigler
Nice state park outside of Sumter with fishing, hiking, and camping. Very pretty and peaceful area.
Carol Robertson
Poinsett SP is a great place to forest bath. Hiking paths are easy with nice natural surroundings. Enjoyed the history of the coquino building and CCC. Do bring bug spray as the gnats are plentiful!
Nancy Frick
We have camped here and have had mixed feelings about it. The first time was a few years ago during the summer. We went on a trail and we were trailed and harassed by these gigantic, buzzing and biting horse flies. Horse flies because Poinsett has horse trails and places for horses. My husband had a tick on his back after the trail hike. We weren’t on horses - just walking. But the last time we visited which was yesterday, it was very pleasant. The pond looked even bigger. Were thinking of bringing our kayaks like the people in the pond yesterday. Everything was peaceful and relaxing.
Todd Farmer
Friendly staff, beautiful lake and area. Plenty of trails to hike.
Cynthia Russe REALTOR
Great park for biking & hiking. Bring food and eat overlooking the lake. Great family fun!
Teresa Cornett
Beautiful, peaceful sites for camping. We took a short hike and then took our kayak out on the pond. Beautiful ecosystem to observe: herons, turtles, fish, little insects being scooped off the water's surface by hungry birds. The only part of the ecosystem I didn't like was the deer fly-a creature we don't have in our neck of the woods! These things are brutal. Their bite stung, and they would swarm around our heads and the side mirrors of the truck. If you're camping in mid-May, definitely bring one of those devices that fans the air with strips to deter flies. We have some, but they're at home!
Thomas Connelly
Had a great time, spent 3days.campsites we're clean and the shower and toilet area, but make Shure that hang your trash bags high there's a brave Fox that comes to the edge of camping area just before dark
Julie Holmes
This wonderful campground has tidy, large spots for RVs, teardrop campers and a separate area for tent campers too.
There are several trails with a variety of settings; some level, some hilly. But all moderately challenging...not difficult at all.
Super friendly camphosts and a tidy bathroom. Just a short 40 minute drive to Congaree National Park if you want a day trip away.
We'll visit again!
Donna Nickle
We enjoy camping at Poinsett State Park and especially love the hiking trails!!
Brittany McGregor
Beautiful.... So many pecan trees! Very quiet. The only things that I can try to complain about is the fact that I can still hear air planes pretty loud and that there could be more sites with electric instead of just water. Overall awesome park! I'll be back.
Somebody Unknown
Really fun I went there for a weekend and had a really great time, it's clean and would go again. They have paddle boats, a lake with a swimming area, a fishing area, etc.
Bryan Andes
It's a little wet out, but the trails are fun. Just be careful!
Neil Oakden
This is a great park. Nice lake for small boats or fishing Awesome hiking trails, well marked & maps available online or at the park ranger station by the lake. Pet friendly. Definitely worth visiting!
Jeremy Hale
Awful. Awful. Whatever the hell those bugs were, they WOULD NOT leave us alone. They flew up our ears and nose, and were everywhere. Had to leave immediately. Waste of time and money. There is a reason the address is “6660” because those bugs are from hell.
Edit: The bugs were deer flies. They are at pretty much every park. They cannot control them. There is actually no way to control the deerfly population. For compensation, I will be giving them 5 stars because it was fun other than those pesky bugs.
John Steiner
Nice and quiet. Sites are a good distance apart. Nice little lake. Caught a couple of decent fish.
Todd Sanders
We really enjoyed our time at
Poinsett St. Park. The bath house was clean and nice. The camp host was very informative. We went fishing and even swam at the the little swimming area in the lake. We had a quite and peaceful weekend.
Eleazar
First time here. Soo very nice. Be warn. The road that go there is very narrow and rough. So don't drive fast. Take your time and enjoy your self.
Megan Moran
Love this park. The roads need looking after... huge pot holes on the roads up to the cabins.
Christian
This place is beautiful. I plan on spending allot of time hiking this amazing park. It's the perfect place to spend our summer.
Morgan Welch
I was pleasantly surprised once arriving to the main parking area. Very well kept up store and ranger station (recently renovated), and plenty of trails to mountain bike, trail run, or just hike. There are also rentable cabins for a decent price.
Kate Butterworth
Beautiful park. Staff is very helpful and wonderful. Beautiful area. Lots of hiking/walking trails in the park and the surrounding Manchester State Forest.
Mornings are good for bird watching.
A skunk wandered nearby. No visual but a definite assault on our olfactory sense!
The sole drawback is the Shaw practice bombing area is nearby and there are planes during the day and evening.
tim cleary
Delightful!
Many choices for hiking and walking. Small pleasant pond with a very interesting history. Restrooms need updates but are clean.
Rachyl H
This place was really great, but could use some lights around some of the parks and bathrooms. And especially the parking lot! If you happen to be there after the sun goes down and your phone goes dead or you don't have a flash light, you could be in trouble! Other than that, really great place. Very relaxing for the very short amount of time we were there. Like maybe an hour.
Matt Baker
Great running trails. Very quiet with little traffic
Brian F
I like the overlook shelter and the scenery is beautiful...closest point to home with a feeling of being in the upstate...
la tompkins
Beautiful place, nice trails.
Thomas Glaab
We went up for an amateur radio event and found a very nice park. Unfortunately the road in was a bit rough, and the trails poorly marked. Hopefully the staff will get the trails cleaned up and we'll give it another try.
Philip Boatwright
Better to visit in early spring or late fall if you want to hike. Bugs will carry you away!
Donna Criswell
We live within an hour of this park and had never been. We had a fun afternoon taking about 3 miles of trails. We were surprised to find "mountains" in central South Carolina. What a surprise! Just a really fun visit and I know we will return. If you visit a lot of state parks and in our case, national parks around the country, you will enjoy a visit here. Some people complain about the roads... they haven't been to the kind of places we have visited. I don't see any problem here.
Christy Tucker
Beautiful park great camp sites, wonderful for family trips. Nice and quiet at night.
WolfQueen Sc (Kitten)
This was a great hike but only gets four stars due to the lack of up keep on a few trails. I loved our experience out there and it was a beautiful and there was plenty of scenery.
Justin Eddy
Nice place to hike and camp so relaxing
Cathi Miller
Love the trails in the park so good to be hiking and not too many people. On this day there were only two other people in the trails.
M Grainger
Beautiful place that offers lot of trails, a lake, and a playground for kids.
tye storm
Beautiful quite surroundings that help release the stress of the world.
Mary Sandle
Peaceful time hiking and just relaxing. Beautiful 🏞️ …
Seth Davis
We have been to hike several times and just rented the large shelter for a party. It's very reasonably priced. We also rented a boat and went out on the pond. Very nice State Park.
Wanda Howard
Relaxing and quiet. Saw gators, caught some small fish. The staff was friendly and helpful. The cabin could use a few repairs, the shower was moldy and water leaked onto floor.
Bernadett Shaver
Great park rangers. Nice swimming area. Paddle boat, canoe, and row boat rentals. Campground not close to swimming area, but both electric and primitive camping.
Bryan
Poinsett Park was a well kept park with nice trails great for running. The numbers at the trail intersections to find yourself on the map were a nice addition but the trails were well marked well enough I didn't really need it. It's a little far from home for me but I'll make sure to hit the trails whenever I'm in the area!
Douglas Phillippi
We rented a canoe for a few hours and took our boy to the park. He had a blast
Kevin Hughes
We enjoyed the walking trails and the trails were very well marked.
Curtis Peagler Jr.
Very friendly park ranger and hosts. Campsites clean and bathroom/bathing facilities very clean.
John Elmer
Nice and quiet
Restrooms clean and had hot water
No dishwashing facilities
Staff very helpful on phone registration
Ron Stimpson
Lake looked terrible, to many snakes by the
waterfalls, and the handicap bars in a shower were missing and I fell because of this. Roads need repair. Campsites were good size. and the ranger was very nice . Could use a better camp store also
Jonathan Mcknight
Off the beaten path but many folks walking, more than I expected pulling up to the parking lot. Bring some bug spray. The mill and waterfall were the highlights for me. Wife loved the camping spots, they were out of the way and quiet but not very spread out. Playground was fairly nice, kids really enjoyed it.
OnThaWayUp1
Absolutely beautiful and clean! Quaint cabins for rent complete with outdoor swing and huge grill. Well spaced campsites for RV and tents. Awesome trails for hiking, biking and equestrian enthusiast. The lakeside is lovely. Paddles boats available. People enjoyed fishing and canoeing. Plenty of picnic tables throughout the park. Restrooms. Sites are handicapped accessible. Going back next weekend!
greg harvey
Is great park ,but the roads are in very bad condition. We have 30 ft fifth wheel and l was very concerned that we were going to damage our rv. I hope they repair the roads. I would love to go back . But I would not recommend taking a large rv there.
Keith Candline
Campground was decent. Sites not right on top of one another and plenty of shade. Lots of hiking trails. Bath house seemed clean and well maintained. Roads are horrendous, as you would expect for South Carolina. Disappointed in the office/store. Very little available for sale (most parks I've been to have a selection of staple camping supplies) and only there for two hours/day, even on weekend when the signs say they have more hours.
Katina Beauty
Love this place. My children had a blast on the paddle boat. Only wish we could rent a cabin for one night instead of minimum 2. We're locals so 2 nights aren't needed
Santanna Gutierrez
Nice park, clean facilities and decent trails to go on. It's got a fairly low nightly rate and very large campsites. Totally worth every penny.
Came back for a wedding. Everything was wonderful, the park and facilities were very clean. Still a 10/10 for me.
Randy Young
Trails are labeled very well and great selection for short or long hikes. Great picnic areas and nice lake offer a great place to spend the day.
Mr. B
Very quiet park with nice hiking trails.
Kyle Blair
This was a very lovely park, with a variety of nice trails and scenery. The Spanish moss hanging on the trees was beautiful. The campsites were quite spacious and were close to the bathrooms. The bathrooms were clean and had very nice showers. I definitely recommend stopping in here.
Angel Colon
Place is great. Very relaxing for the family. Attendant very friendly. Ride in paddle boat was awesome. We are coming back shortly with invited guests to have a picnic. Very good environment for children also. Park well keap. Thank you.
Terry McDonald
It was great! We were there after Xmas and through new year's. Some one gave it a one star because of some bugs, give me a break, it is the outdoors. We had some swarms but bug repellent, hats, and common since made them a minor issue. Also someone complained about a foot of water in their camp site, I was probably 150 feet from their site and you would have to dig a hole a foot deep to get a foot of water. It rained several days and yes it was wet and the water flowed down the road but so what. It still stopped enough for us and the dog to enjoy the many miles of trails in the park. We did have some ignorant.... set off fireworks on new years eve, scaring our dog, but the Ranger put a stop to it and it was back to peace and quiet. Didn't do the first day hike because of the crowds but waiting a while cleared them out. It was great except there were too many Covid campers.
Keith Hutchinson
Nice park. Lots of trees and spread out sites. The park office building is beautiful.
William Russell
Camping is ok. There are some outer circle sites that open into a large field, so if you're looking for serenity ibwiuod stay away from that. Nice little pond for kayaking and rangers are friendly. Very small park though. So I wouldn't recommend planning a big trip here.
Linda Conner
We were pleasantly surprised with this park. Very pretty. We spent the day hiking the trails and walking around. Trails well maintained and well marked. The only disappointing aspect was the amount of trash on the grounds and even on the trail.
Erik Butzon
Loved this park/campground. So quiet, lots of trails to hike, not a bad drive from our home to the park!
Chris Koslin
Beautiful little park that is worth a day trip to. Had about 5 or 6 miles worth of hiking trails, canoe/kayak rentals and a nice little pond to fish in. Went for a nice hike. Just a warning that you should read the notes up on the board because the longer of the trails has a washed out spot where you end up knee deep in water. But you can go around.
Jessica Mitchum
Large. Multiple trails. Secluded. Scenic. Rental/Activities. Waterways. Picnic areas. Kid playground.
***BUT...! if you are camping... there's NO wifi or cell service in camping section!! Whether 'primitive' or tent/rv with power, it ALL seems a little primitive. Only difference is power connection sites and a bathhouse.
I'm truly ok with semi-primitive, but no cell service or Wi-Fi (in camping area), as a female... this needs to be addressed for safety, at minimum. It was beautiful, but me & my daughter had to leave, as safety is #1. Obviously won't be getting my 2-night worth of reservations back.
*oh.... SITE 17.... is the worst, if you wanted a little seclusion. It's the only rv/tent site that is "in" the 'activity field' (there was a group of teens playing loud and rough football right next to us, even my daughter did NOT like it).
Highly suggest day visits, not so much camping.
Maria Kisielewska
Be sure to have cash, it is the only way to pay. Park is really nice
David Murray
Very nice campground. If you like mountain biking, this is a good choice. Well marked trails and a bit sandy so it drains well. Best ridden when other places are too wet to ride.
B P
Spots are really close together. Zero privacy. Great trails and very little cell service which is good for a lot of people. Restrooms and showers were clean, but there were no soap dispensers when washing your hands. Park staff was not the best when it came to customer service...could be because they do not get a great deal of business. Park and trails are beautiful, but sometimes overrun by cyclists.
Julie Tomsuden
Don't be fooled into thinking the trails at this park will be easy just because it's located south of Columbia. If there were a trail rating system here, many of them would be 9 or 10. The trails are very well marked. You will need to bring something to stay hydrated while hiking.
Bonnie Flory
Great relaxing place to camp. The showers are HOT and very clean. You do have to pay for two-nights over the weekend for state parks in SC, but the price is worth it even if you only stay for one-night.
Travis Atkinson
This state park is a hidden gem. My wife and I were so pleasantly surprised. Beautiful land to explore. Great for dogs. Good hiking. Cool history. All around great place to visit. We'll be back!
Ray Halfkenny
Beautiful park to visit, decent trails, and hey they have really nice cabins at reasonable rates! Swimming and boating/fishing area, picnic tables, just what some of us need to unplug and unwind!
Robby Lingenfelter
Just drive through the rough, torn up road you would expect in South Carolina and go up to the park office. From there, you start on some of the best and well marked out hiking trails you can find. Definitely a park to come back to and hike more than once.
G. Oakden
Variety of hiking trails. Bathrooms available at ranger station.
Jennifer Kelsey
Beautiful place, great hiking trails and friendly rangers!! We camped in a tent and the camp site was a good size, had running water and a picnic table. The bathrooms are some of the best by far at campgrounds!! Showers had hot water and the bathrooms were cleaned twice while we were there. You can rent row boats, swim, and hike. It’s an absolutely beautiful place and we look forward to going back!
T Fabian
Always love walking these trails!!! The lake is beautiful! Great little playground for my nephew to enjoy when he comes for a visit. My favorite place of all is the mill ruins. Just indescribable!
Nik Bramblett
Beautiful riverside park with extensive well-mantained network of trails. Bugs (whole clouds of swarming gnats) everywhere really put a damper on what otherwise would have been a really enjoyable hike. Vehicle access from highway 261 is poorly maintained.
Allison Roberts
The only thing I wish poinsett had would be a playground of some sort for kids. It is nice however. Just take plenty of water and wear appropriate clothes and shoes. The prices for rentals are cheap too from the paddle boats to the cabins and camping grounds. It's kept clean and it's never busy either. I do wish it was easier to get to the min waterfall so kids can see it, but it's not impossible as long as you're slow making your way down. We love packing a picnic and sitting by the water or in one of the shelters to eat. We go here at least once a month minimum. It's free to get in, and there's a lot of things to see. The overlook shelter is my top recommendation to see. The view is just awesome.
Ahmed Javaid
Good place for families. A nice play area for kids
Chris Brimlow
Loved every single thing about this state park. Plenty of well maintained and easily guided hiking and biking trails. It rained one night and the next morning the trails were in perfect condition. The campsites are not on top of each other, which I really liked. The bathrooms are spotless and the water pressure in the showers were better than any hotel I've ever stayed at. The park rangers were super helpful and nice. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this state park, cannot wait to go back!
Elizabeth Darragh
Secluded and serene campground less than an hour from Columbia, South Carolina. A diamond in the rough!
Charles Lewis
Here's the thing, I learned today that camping means different things to different people. I would prefer to hike out to a campsite, have a little space and a little quiet, and just enjoy some nature. Some people want to drive out to their site and just pull stuff out of their trunk, and that's okay. Do you, you know what I mean?
I pulled into the wrong campsite. I didn't do it because the sites weren't clearly marked, the absolutely were. I did it because the sites are so close together I wasn't sure which one was mine and which one was my neighbors. I could hear two different conversations at the same time, and neither one of them were mine.
I should have grabbed a back country permit and gone that way. It's a lesson learned. I don't think this place is BAD, I just don't think it's for me.
For the record, beautiful hiking trails here. I'll go back just for the hikes.
Brett Jones
It has a central building with bathrooms/information center. There are lots of well marked trails with some ups and downs. It is a nice park for the geographic area but I wouldn't consider it a vacation destination. Well worth the drive from Columbia for a day hike.
Kayla Zagorsky
Poinsett State Park is absolutely beautiful and a true hidden gem. We recently visited South Carolina and after spending the weekend visiting nearby Congaree National Park, we opted to stay at Poinsett State Park for 4 nights in our Mercedes Sprinter campervan. As we had read online, the roads into and around the park are truly in desperate need of repair, but once in the campground, the sites are very nice. Site 24 was perfect as it is the last one with hookups and that allows RVs. The hiking is fantastic - I was able to easily hike several miles each day with my dogs and most of the hiking trails are very peaceful and pretty. Even though we were there in early February, we did encounter some gnats/mosquitos and we had to be incredibly vigilant about picking ticks off of our dogs. The only negative is that the park host was incredibly rude to us. We travel with our two well behaved dogs and ALWAYS keep them on a leash. I spent several hours a day hiking with them and walked through the campground with them on several occasions, which I know the host saw since we walked past him multiple times. On the third day of our stay, as I was bringing one of our dogs back and we were switching leashes and harnesses, our other dog jumped out and got away from us for a minute. We immediately ran after her, and after calling her name, she turned around and came back. She was out for less than a minute, and we were actively pursuing her with leash in hand the entire time. My husband was literally running after her without shoes on. The camp host came and yelled at us claiming that our dog "almost attacked his dog." She's a 9 year old Golden Retriever that is literally the most friendly dog on the planet. She was in our view the entire time and never barked or growled, only went up somewhat near them (several feet away) to say hello. It was clearly a mistake that she got out and something we rectified immediately. He kept yelling at us well after she was in our control. While I 100% understand and agree that all dogs should be on leash, it was clearly a mistake and absolutely nothing happened. It made us feel really awkward and uncomfortable. Then, on top of that, the next day, we couldn't even walk our dogs because there were 2 loose dogs running all over the campground with literal bells on - the camp host of course didn't address what was actually a flagrant violation of the rules by a neighboring camper. Other than that, our 4 day stay was perfect, but this really negatively impacted our stay.
Harry and Karen Dorr
This is a fairly small park, but it has some great surprises. It has lots of mountain laurels like we have at home, but they have lots of spanish moss on them. We found nice pond with chairs by the bank. The campground was very nice and we liked that the bathrooms were not only clean, but they were heated! And it was chilly when we were there.
Mary Ann Cisneros
Campsites are large and the bathrooms are clean. At site 24 you are right next to a trailhead. We did an easy 6 mile hike starting on Whippoorwill trail in the AM to have a nice peaceful lunch at the campsite.
Jann Howell
Lots of bugs year round. Few rangers. But otjerwise the park is amazing. Remote. Lake. Hiking. Kids have places to play. Wildlife.
Catori Swann
Beautiful setting, lots of hiking trails. The lake is cool and the water is surprisingly clear.
Only issue is proximity to an Army Reserve bombing range, so there is some noise pollution. Sounded like a not-so-distant thunderstorm all day.
Tammy Welch
We loved this state park!! There was so much to keep us busy during our stay in 2018!! We absolutely adored our host Rocky and his sweet wife. Both were so helpful with everything. We'll definitely camp here again!
Jacob McDonald
Poinsett State Park is a bit of a hidden gem, with swimming and hiking trails for most folks. The location is dog friendly for both the trails and swimming. The lake is a great way for both you and your dog to cool off after a nice hike. Take the time to visit and let the state know how appreciative you are for this area being preserved.
There is even a bit of history with the Civilian Conservation Corps doing work on this site during the depression, which remains in good condition to this day.
Jessica Compton
Always so quiet out here
Justin P
Poinsett State Park is a beautiful little park near Sumter in the High Hills of Santee region. The park is named for Joel Poinsett, a South Carolina native and ambassador to Mexico, for whom Poinsettias are named after. The park has more than 25 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, including part of the Palmetto Trail. My wife and I took our dog for a hike while passing through the area. An old mill site has a small waterfall, one of the most scenic spots in the park, just behind the park office. The steep bluffs over Shanks Creek provide great views and interesting flora - such as Spanish Moss draped over mountain laurel.
Jaime Patterson
My daughter stayed here for a Girl Scout camping trip. She had a great time and loves how close the bathrooms were to her tent area. Nice pavilions located around the park for use for their activities.
Vincent Mursuli
I am very impressed by my first visit to this park. Lots of parking available. This trip, we stayed mainly on trails that are part of the Palmetto Trail which includes sections of the Coquina, Hilltop, Laurel, and Knot trails. There are many CCC-era buildings and older ruins to explore. Plenty of wildlife to observe. Trails are well marked and their are former/defunct trails that can be used if you find one. Only scratched the surface today but will be returning soon.
charles Dugan
Cool little spot... Doing the ultimate outsider to get state park stamps this was a good spot... Pots and pans in cabin 4 are a little used up. Time for new ones or bring your own. Camp site 11 is a nice spot for tents.
Clint Scott
One of my favourite state parks!
Michelle Rabon
Plenty of lake views
Jessica Willis
I am in love with this park! The unique landscape creates an unforgettable backdrop for biking and hiking trails with a peaceful pond perfect for fishing or boating. The cabins are CCC built and ideal for a quiet or romantic getaway. The campground is well kept with great bathrooms and showers and there are various picnic shelters around the park. If you need help just head to the old Tea Room and ask the Rangers, they are knowledgeable and friendly!
Emily Laratta
Poinsett was awesome! Loved hiking here!
E Mckenzie
Beautiful trails to walk and a picturesque lake. We took family pictures here and loved this location. Make sure you download an offline map if you'll be using that to navigate as cell phone reception peters out not far into the park. Obey the speed limit sign if you value you car's suspension and or tires. The road in is paved but full of giant potholes.
Will Riggs
It's a great place for a family weekend get away and a great day trip for hiking or to take your pets to get some exercise. Nice and clean facilities with campgrounds and cabins available. You can also fish and kayak in the pond there. There is a playground for the children and picnic areas.
Stacey Keasler
Pretty lake, but very very rustic. Campground was not in the best shape, had a hard time driving the camper to the spot. Bathouses pretty rustic too. Loved the park, but was really disappointed in the campground. Great place to hike and explore.... Not so much a place to camp.
Anne Jones
Very quiet and relaxing. Nice long hikes. Bathrooms are clean and well lit. Will stay again.
Joseph Schlichtig
Great park. Large and plenty of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Nice camp sites and fishing spots. The office sometimes hold nature seminars for kids. Highly recommend a visit.
C. French
The State Park road is awful. I have been in many National and State Parks and this road is ridiculous. It needs widening to allow access for RV's. It is like a backcountry one lane road.
The Park itself, the bathhouses are good.
More bugs than I have seen in a long time. Need a constant fire, citronella candles, and bugs spray.
H McLeod
I love this place. Great place to take in nature. Rent a paddle boat, kayak. They have a place to swim. You may spot a american alligator or two. I must say that ive never been at Poinsett and the temperature was above 60 and did not run across some snakes. The last visit we came across two water moccasins. So keep a look out. They have cabins and camping areas that people say are nice.
Melting
Poinsett state park is an absolutely breath taking state park to be hold. The camp grounds allow for a decent aloud of room and give you a good range of choices for camping styles. That cabin combine modern and rustic in a beautiful way. The trail are well maintain and offer a great experience to take home.
Valerie Clark
Went with cub scout. The primitive camp sites were flat with open area near the fire pit with trees around for shade and to attack hammock tents.
Lark Harrison
Very nice trails and clean bathrooms. Camp sites around the big open field were the best! Would be great for large groups too.
OLKIE
This is my go to spot for mountain biking. That's mostly due to it being one of the only places to mountain bike. However, the trails are well maintained. The scenery is beautiful, especially the Spanish moss hanging from tree branches. This is a great place to take your family for outdoor activities. There are lots of hiking/biking trails, boat rentals, and picnic areas.
Anthony “Tony” Haufler
Nice park and great bike trails!
RJ T
My first time to the park since moving here a year ago.. Mountain biked for my first time..all trails are bike friendly, but am going back to hike..
Robert Macdougall
They never cleaned the bathrooms and they only replaced toilet paper if called. In two weeks that we were there, they never filled the empty soap containers considering Covid germs you'd think they'd care about the soap. Ice cold bathroom seats. Told them about stray cat, they didn't care. Called them several times about soap and they never came. Wth
Sabrina Rojek
Very pretty park. The layout of spaces for both RV and tent we're great and roomy. Most spaces were completely shaded which was NEEDED since it's so hot already. The little lake is cute and can rent boats for super cheap. Make sure you get your supplies and things before going and your cell will not work. The office has WiFi to even make any calls, but was spotty. I don't mind no wifi since we were camping, but to make calls for reservations, maps for directions, just be prepared. Would definitely go back, very peaceful and relaxing.
Joe Kinard
It's almost like your in the mountains. Very hilly and the leaves are changing colors. One of my favorite state parks.
Leslie R. Childers
Camped there for three nights. Shower facilities are old but in pretty good shape. Nice trails. Staff was friendly. The roads on the property were rough, lots of pot holes in pavement.
Loretta Divine
This is now one of my favorite state parks. Beautiful setting, miles and miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, historic foundations of a pre-revolutionary mill, plus all the works of the CCC. We hiked the Coquina Trail. Quite hilly. Beautiful Coquina stone shelter along the trail.
No Name
Be careful! Camped here over Christmas. Lots of deer ticks. A neighbor camper allerted us to the fact. She said that her dogs picked up several during a hike. I pulled one off my dog before it attached. I wasn't so lucky. I am now carefully watching the bite on my leg. We came home early. The park get a 5 star rating, but the ticks drop it to 3 stars.
Mike Young
A great camping area for the entire family. Very friendly staff. Will be going back soon.
Brent Tatum
Lots of trails for mountain bikes and hikers of varying lengths. From campers perspective roads to campground need serious work. Had family camp there in May and we did in Nov. Gnats were terrible each time. Terrible as in flying in your mouth, ears, eyes. Some smart people had nets over their head.
rachelmm05
My family and I had a great time today. We went kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding. Lifevest are available for kids and adults. Reasonable prices and friendly staff. We will definitely return
Lisa Hill
Love this place every chance we get we come to visit one of my favorite places to visit 💕 …
John Emrich
One of the best parks in the east coast. Very remote and quiet. You can enjoy it by walking, biking or driving on the many side roads accessible very easy via a 4x4 and even AWD vehicle.
Josh White
Great scenic trails through sandhills with a lake and streams. Dog and bicycle friendly. my family frequently hikes here. They recently renovated a foot bridge and added a playground to the rec area.
Kimber Wisener
Love this quiet and peaceful little chunk of this great state!!
Lovely setting among, wooded areas with pond, old grist mill trail, additional walking trails, canoe and kayak rentals, and a beautiful clubhouse/meeting house with a gorgeous rocked fireplace and a helpful ranger!!
Some of the trails are pretty long, so prepare for that. Maybe use bug spray, bring snacks n water 🙂
We will be going here for as long as we live here in the Sumter SC area!
Kathy Woods
We love the park. RV sites are very roomy and you have lots of privacy. Beautiful campground and lake. Waterfall is gorgeous too.only complaint is you cant enjoy the many hikes due to the millions of gnats are horrible.
Chris Coen
There's a gorgeous outdoor rec area where you can go swimming, or fishing, or rent kayaks or canoes. You can also rent cabins or go camping. There are multiple trails of varying lengths, some of which allow for biking and others are walking only so it accommodates everyone. Unfortunately there's a small bridge on one of the main paths that's been washed away the last several times I've been. This is not a huge issue if you don't mind getting a little wet to cross the shallow stream but it can get a little deeper and very muddy after rainy days. My dog loves wading in the water so we always go that path regardless of whether or not the bridge is up. Make sure to take bug spray with you and do tick checks after your hike. All in all, it's a great park with a ton of trails for all hikers.
Travis L
A hidden gem. Make the trip and enjoy it! Be warned - you're not going to have cell phone reception here, but you'll never miss it.
Danielle Avin
This park is beautiful, recently being renovated and added a playground for the children. They have hiking\biking trails, picnic areas, lake canoe rentals, and cabins\ campgrounds so the entire family can enjoy the natural scenery.
Cindy Thogode
Poinsett State Park is the first State Park we visited in SC. And its amazing. We love this park. Super nice rangers. Super nice park. Super clean cabins. Very quiet. Going back in December.
michelle kubik
Always such a awesome place! Beautiful mill and hiking. They also keep the office and bathrooms so clean... A local treasure we visit almost weekly
Luna “LunaDoesTechStuff” Does stuff
It's such a beautiful state park.
Joseph Mr.FoodReview
Poinsett State Park is a great place to go and get away from civilization and just enjoy nature itself as it comes or is. There are a few gems in nature of this location, to be discovered also. I have visited this location in the past but just recently had to go and make another special visit. If you are looking for somewhere to maybe host a birthday or hold a company gather on a great sunny day, well this is the place for you. Plenty of open space to organize anything.
dylan murphy
Nice park, great play area for kids or swimming. Nice trails of varying lengths. Lots of nice woods, mushrooms, snails etc.
mimi tynch
Awesome park! Kids had a great time. Beautiful scenery, no cost to enter. Rental of paddle boats was reasonable. Coming back to rent a cabin soon as it gets cooler.
Jose Mirles
Between the mosquitoes and gnats, you couldn't do anything there. The pond is very nice but no one there has ever seen anyone catch a fish. The park was very clean.
Amanda Rowan
The park has beautiful trails, but the camping sites are extremely close to one another. So close that when your neighbor is up drinking and blasting music until 3 am, you'll be up as well.
Raley's Small Engines
We had a great time fishing at the pond and only caught one fish, but we were only there about an hour. It was a nice size catfish.
Jeff Hatfield
This park has great views, a wonderful lake, awesome trails for hiking and mountain biking and free wifi! Yes you'll need it as the location is in a Cell dead zone. Very quiet peaceful Park. Ignore the area of trees that are cut on the way in. We're not exactly sure why Manchester State Park cut trees but maybe they needed to pay the bills.
Dawn Larsen
I cannot say enough good things about Poinsett State Park! The flora and fauna are abundant, the park manager was nice and fun, the maps were incredible, and the trails were amazingly well marked. And… The trails and the maps match… What is this sorcery?!
Janet Tarbox
This park is small and out of the way. I purchased a state park passport while there, having been met by a cheerful and helpful park employee. I am looking forward to spending more time at Poinsett and to exploring many other SC parks.
Joe Kitchen
We really enjoy all the hiking trails. The trails are some of the best marked we have been on. It's nice to see all different kinds of trees ave Spanish moss so far inland.
Ed Komasara
The staff takes pride in their park and it shows. Our cabin was amazing in the attention to detail in the styling. From the furnishings to the handmade local soap, great care for your experience was in practice. I can't wait to go back!
J Jilote
I am presently the camp host here at Poinsett State Park and I love it here. I camped here in the past in the tent area. I love the woods and the trails. The lake is refreshing during the summer. The Rangers are very friendly and knowledgeable. The odd thing about the park are the office hours; 11-12 and 4-5 during the week, but I understand why. They have many chores and tasks to deal with like clearing the trails, building upkeep, repairing water lines, relocating wildlife, mechanical maintenance, ground maintenance, and caring for the lake and patrolling the grounds. These are just a few.
I call the lake Nature's Soup! Not all people enjoy swimming in lakes, but that's fine. The view is relaxing. There are rental boats, paddle boards, canoes, and paddle boats. Many people come during the day to fish. I'm waiting to catch a bass!
During the fall hunters visit often on the weekends, some stay for weeks. They hunt in nearby Manchester State Park. Many deer come to Poinsett to visit during hunting season.
I haven't seen a turkey yet, but I hear them. I know of 2 white barn owls here. There is a variety of birds and other wildlife.
The closest place to get hot food is a pizza from the Solo gas station about 4 miles away. Next would be Batton's hunting and fishing shop about 10 miles from the park. There is a dinner in back with homestyle food, and daily special.. I enjoy their food. Oh, and the open early, very early.
Be prepared for falling nuts!
Black Hickory and Acorns will shoot down from the trees. Many thrown by squirrels.
The roads to the campsites are a bit rugged, red clay and sand. Be prepared for a bumpy ride.
There are 50 individual campsites, 24 RV sites, and 26 tent sites, as well as 5 group sites.
In the RV area there are 2 level sites, 1 pull through site, a handicap site, an activity building, and a bathhouse.
The RV/Camper sites have a fire ring with grill, water and electricity. Some have a separate (and very old) grill. Make sure your vehicle (s) will fit within a chosen site. The height also matters. There are some low hanging branches. There is also a drive through site.
There are 2 bathhouses. One in the RV area and one in the tent area. Each have 2 showers with great water pressure. The men's room has a urinal and two stalls. The women's room has 3 stalls. The RV bathhouses are heated in the winter, but no a/c or fans for the summer. The bathhouses in the tent area have no heat or air.
We do have bugs here. We're in the woods. And there is wildlife.
It is quite and peaceful during the week. And, it can be very busy on the weekends. People come to hike and bike, to hunt and fish, or just chill.
There are large shelter buildings that can be rented for large gatherings.
We have a lookout area with a shelter. The view is amazing. Looks like the foothills of the mountains and much of the vegetation is similar to that of a mountainous region.
There are the remains of an old grist mill, a spillway and other sites. A playground had been added near the office area.
We have 5 cabins available to rent. Number 5 is handicap accessible and is the largest of the cabins. It also has tv. The others do not.
The office and outside of the office, as well as the cabins have WiFi, the campground does not. I take the short ride to the office and sit on the porch to download and do research.
The office is open 9-5 on weekends. They have gifts and firewood and ice cream. Firewood can also be gathered from the woods, deadwood only. And fires must always be attended. Don't go to sleep with a fire burning. Water is at each site.
There is also a Primitive Area. 5 large areas for groups such as boy scouts, reunions, and church gatherings. There is a 2 stall men's and women's bathroom at this location. No electricity or water.
We have a large open field where games can be played. Or bring a lounge chair and watch the stars at night.
There is also an activity building located in the campground with several picnic tables, a large fireplace, and many toys and games.
Come and Enjoy!

The kids and I loved this place! It was very beautiful and clean out there, very peaceful. The park employees were very nice as well. I would recommend this park to anyone!
Karen Moyd
Nice locale and fishing.
J B
This park has a LOT to offer. It is convenient to Greenville, so there are a plethora of things to do nearby, but the parking can be limited and it can get very crowded very quickly. I had to drive around for 45 minutes to get a parking space just so I could get to the ultimate outsider stamp. It is a nice excursion for the afternoon for locals or an extended weekend for out-of-towners
Emily Martin
Wonderful hiking trails, year round boat rentals... The BEST campground host ever, clean and warm bathrooms, and the park staff has been great too. They even delivered our firewood to our campsite!
Frederick Austin
Decent park. It has some good scenery, especially with moss covered trees in and around the grounds. Campsites have enough space to not feel crowded. There is water down from camp sites to fish and/or rent a canoe or paddle boat. There's also a little giftshop/store. Buy firewood, momento, ice cream, etc. Be advised, some roads may be narrow which isn't an issue if you're the only one on it at any given time...however, you may encounter an oncoming vehicle in which then it can become a minor inconvenience.
Sheena Edwards
Love this place! Only downfall is the trails are not properly marked. You will get lost if your not careful. My family did. It took us two hours to find our way out. We ended up at the main road and had to walk all the way back to the park.
Joseph Savitsky
Nice place to visit and experience nature. I travel for work a lot and always look forward to my stays at the state parks every time possible. The next time it will be for pleasure so I can spend more time experiencing everything the park has to offer.
Jack Vergas
Excellent park. Fun and well built albeit rather tame mountain bike trails. Bring bug spray as the mosquitoes in the campground are relentless. Highly recommend!
Brenda Merritt
The park seems to be in the middle of nowhere, which we love. However, the park seems to be being neglected. Only one worker in the office, which closes at noon, at the time. We have not seen any other workers (rangers) at all during our 5 night stay. Otherwise a very quiet campground!
Adam Sederlund
Nice little State Park near Sumter. There are some easy and moderate trails around the park. It also has five cabins on property for rent, although I haven't stayed at them before.
Tony Lawrence
If you want to do endless walks thru the woods this is the perfect place to be.
Chew Toy
Nice camp spots with clean restrooms and showers.
Kam
Interesting history at this park! Loved walking around the remains of the grist mill and waterfall. A pond for swimming, Adirondack chairs to sit in by the pond.
Jim Brennan
This place is beautiful. It's so quiet and well kept. It has very nice trails, campgrounds, and cabins. This park is very well maintained.

My family and I enjoyed it very much. My 2 year old granddaughter wouldn't get out of the water. She would have stayed all night if she could...lol and we are thinking about renting one of their cabins. It was a GREAT day!!!!!!

Gary Wieselman
Go see a South Carolina State Park steeped in history. It is mamed for the man who made the Poinsettia famous. This is a fantastic place from the water and old mill site to the exhilarating climb up to the high hills.
Mohan Jayabal
Such a beautiful state park, stayed jus 2 nights in Cottage 2, which was very clean and we'll maintained. The ranger was very nice guy. We wanted a rollaway bed, it was ready when we checked in. Nice laketrail, boats, kayaking, nice place for weekend getaway. Kudos guys.
Buck Amerson
10 dollars an hour for a kyac rental is too much. Tablerock only charged 15 for all day
Andy Hutt
Fantastic hiking trails, lake with kayak rentals, fishing. We camped here with our dogs. Has electric and water hookups. One of my favorite campsites in SC for the price. Will be going back again.
Lizzy W
We came in mid May and the gnats were just unbearable!! They were everywhere...they were getting in our eyes and ears! The park itself was so beautiful and well kept and we wish we could have enjoyed it more.
Michelle
Poinsett State Park is a hidden gem in South Carolina. It's beautiful! The trails are well marked and easy to follow. Or you can rent a kayak or paddle board and enjoy the lake.
Steve Boykin
Absolutely beautiful. We went out to do our prewedding photos and the land scape was perfect but I had one of the most gifted photographers I know, Dalacy Watson, who made the whole experience even better. Look her up!
Becca Hill
Beautiful place. Peaceful. Great fishing spot. Lots of hiking trails.
Nathan McCrackin (Whats Crackin outdoors)
I Love all of South Carolinas State Parks. They all have there very own uniqueness. I am a South Carolina Native Born n Raised and I must say we do have some very beautiful state parks. And all of it state and federal parks are very nice...
James Gremillion
Poinsett State Park is a hidden gem in the Midlands. Just a short trip from Columbia or Sumter, Poinsett offers fishing, hiking, canoeing, paddleboarding, mountain biking, or in other words, something for just about everyone. Add to that great camping and cabins, and you have an easy weekend get away. Last but not least, the park was mainly built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the beautiful craftsmanship of their work is on display throughout the park. If you're visiting the Midlands or looking for an easy weekend getaway, consider a trip to Poinsett State Park.
Briana Reid
Great if you want a true outdoor experience; we rode up to the Overlook and enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature while gazing over acres of trees. A beautiful sight and well worth it!!
Karen Maslanko
I've been going to this park for 50 plus years it's a nice place to go have a family or friends Gathering
Steve Yelvington
Way off the beaten path. Roads are rough and narrow. Flat, sandy, spacious sites. Spotless, well maintained bathrooms. Lots of downed trees, so local firewood is available.
paul etheridge
Went because of a snake show and ended up finding a hidden gem just 30 mins from home. Ranger Russ did a great job informing us about local snakes (and his own pet ball python). After that,we wandered around and found a park that we will definitely come back to again.
Delina Hart
One of Sumter's best kept secrets. My Grandchildren and I have been enjoying this place for many years. It's so beautiful and peaceful. Now you can swim!
Brenda Miguel
A great place to hike or camp or ride bikes or do anything fun..
bryan fralix
Fun place to hike or mountain bike the trails there. Decent amount of trails and they actually has some elevation changes which are pretty much non existent for "lower" South Carolina!
Karen M
Pretty State Park but the roads are in very bad shape. This park needs some serious maintenance. It's a shame because the location quite stunning.
Tamara Anderson
Great hiking trails, RV camping spot was close by, and beautiful lake.
Robert Woodward
Beautiful park, tons of hiking trails. State Parks all have great staff and clean facilities. There is no playground which most parks have but still a great place to see some wildlife and relax.
Rob Paski

Andrea Farmer
Great place for camping, family outing or weekend hidaway
Jacob Gilmore
I stay at state parks all over America on my travels and Poinsett is my favorite. Everything is top notch, form the friendly staff, to the amazing cabins, to the unique beauty you find everywhere. Highly recommended.
Jo Heffernan
A geologic jewel on the river valley, the park was an inlet off the main river in the good old days when dinosaurs roamed. Take a hike, take a bike. Any way you go works. Bring a tent or just get a cabin for the weekend, chill and be on the look out for dinosaurs.
jess terrapin
Nice campground with lots of bike trails.
Kayla Speer
Lovely park. We rented a boat and paddled around the pond. The only con was all of the gnats. On the trails they were unbearable.
Trinity Ford
Camp sites are large and private. We had a great time exploring and reading about the history of the area
MommaKkat
Absolutely loved my daughter's first hike she totally loved it ❤️
JD Williford
Sites were nice. Trails were nice. Its very easy to get turned around in there if you don't know the place. Definitely need a few more signs on the roads
David Gorny
Nice, but the campground men's bathroom door wouldn't close, the heater didn't work, and it was cold. Fix these things and it would be a five star state park.
Brandon B
Easy hike. Enjoyable.
Paul F
Biking and hiking trails. Nuff said. Many dozens of miles of beautiful Midland SC woods, adjoining the thousands of acres of Manchester State Forest. A quiet camping retreat. Bring bug spray in spring/ summer. Public shooting range open every other weekend just down the road in state Forest and OHV trails.
Ray Gurley
Stay in the cabins. We recently stayed here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very rustic, clean and really nice on the inside. We stayed in cabin #3 for 3 nights. Very affordable and a peaceful setting in the woods. Would come back.
Robert Weaver
The best state park in the Midlands of SC.
