Reviews of Lowden State Park
Missy Gaul
One of my favorite places to camp. During the week it’s very quiet and peaceful. There is always a lot of bird activity here. Great place to sit and watch birds.
Barb Wolber
Nice campgrounds. Clean restrooms with showers. We stayed in the Shady Rest side. Concession stand with camping supplies was very handy. Overall, a peaceful and quiet place to kick back and relax or hike some wooded trails if you prefer. Be sure to visit the Indian!
Dennis Riley
Hiked the Pines Trail off the native camping area. Well kept but natural. Went early afternoon so no wildlife. Great park on either side of the road
Miscellaneous Muzik
If you're looking for a place to put in some quick steps, Lowden park is your location. Are there better places to hike in Oregon, yes, but those places don't have the statue. You have to hike the trails at least once if you're in the area.
Maniyazhagan Subbiah
Wonderful statue. Good place for camping, here two kind of trails (small staircase trail and steep and slippery) and can do walk near river bank.
Joseph Sivits
Exquisite park with great facilities. Good public lodging, amazing services, good camp atmosphere, and the facilities are just okay. I was surprised the the hiking and running trails, they were exceeding expectations, I would use this for a family gathering for sure, didn't, but I would. again, I didn't use this for a family gathering but I would.
Ryan Madlener
Great place to casually camp. We did a walk-in reservation. The campsites are nicely-sized and come equipped with a fire pit and a bench. There is a bathhouse that closes for the winter on Nov. 9th. I see people here with their RVs as well.
Carolyn LeCroy
Site 18 to the leftt of entrance (partial shade, not level)
Our pull through ended up not being a true pull through.
Very very close sites
clean bathhouse & hot showers
good 4G
Cesar Guerrero
Very nice Park and campground, trails are very good marked, pit toilets very clean. Close to downtown Oregon and next to de Rock River.
LUCY CONDON
Quiet escape on the East side of the park, bit too busy on the West; great trails, friendly maintenance folks, Black Hawk OR Statue as it referred to outstanding, but if we honer Native Americans now, what happened in the 1800's.
Beck Schulte
It's always nice coming to this park. It is a really good work out climbing those stairs. If you're looking for a fun adventure and place to get some good exercise, this is the place. The statue was still covered when we went.
BambooShot
The place is quite peaceful. Other than the fireworks and sometimes a dog barks for 4 minutes or so, the birds are peaceful, and the bugs calm down after an hour or so of being there. Frogs, snakes (not dangerous, rather scared of you), etc., are found here.
4 stars just because of the odd camping ground areas. Some of the land is uneven, but not bad enough to be a real complaint.
Yes, they allow dogs here as well.
Kim Caro
A beautiful campground! Great fire just a quiet getaway. Only gave it 4 instead of 5 simply because there isn't any Ranger talks or programs. If you are looking for a simple camping getaway with a few short trails this place is lovely.
Maria Fernandez
Beautiful park to visit, the stairs are always a good workout for me 😆. There is a playground for the kids and picnic areas. …
David Honts
Very nice park. Well kept. Nice clean, all shaded camp ground. Great overlook views of the rock river.

Love spending time at Lowden State Park any time of the year and Fall is my favorite because the colors of changing leafes are so bright and beautiful 🍁🍁 …
Adam Sharp
Great park, with the Blackhawk statue. It is covered but still over looks the valley. Has nice walking trails, and a campground
Local town also has much carector.
Jennifer Grant
Beautiful scenery. Great hiking trails. A great place to see fall colors! We didn't have much time to spend, but we will definitely visit again when we have more time!
Kathy Christensen
We usually tent at Lowden's White Oak Campground, but this time we came to the main campground to use electric. This is always a nice park to come to and the kids have fun!
Suzanne Grant
Large Statue of Chief Blackhawk you can walk up to and see it, tables to have a picnic, trails to hike, playgrounds and they have spaces for camping.
R. U. Lost 2
A pleasant campground located high above the Rock River. The most popular attraction in this park seems to be the ‘Eternal Indian’ statue constructed as a tribute to Black Hawk. From the statue, there is also a set of steps leading down to the river. Unfortunately, my mobility issues precluded me from exploring that option.
David Renard
Beautiful area overlooking the Mississippi River. The main trails are well maintained, but others are not.
Jim Jones
Nice park. I was there scouting camping spots for next year
Holly Lorentz
Currently doing restoration on the Chief so he's wrapped like a mummy. Beautiful views, trails.
Fred K
Only one water spicket on till may 1st , some spots are a little tight, other then that its great, 10mins from byron's nuke
Ron Breier
Based on looks alone, this place os amazing. But there are issues with the electric hookups. Many are visibly damaged. The RV pads are in bad shape and the bath facilities are lacking. Illinois needs to repair this camogroind before it falls into disrepair. The nearby town, Oregon, is really quaint and fun to visit.
Victor Jaimes
Excellent place I have all that I love to do like fishing and forest,y a very quiet place
Rachel Voeks
Very nice quiet and clean. Had a spacious site. A few nice hiking trails. Concessions were not open on a Friday night
Kaloyan Marinov
Been here 2 this summer and have enjoyed myself. The class C cites I got were nice and private and quiet
Andrea Stevenson
Stayed in the cabin in the campground back in August. It was hard to find info about it on any website, so I will leave some here. It's a two room deal with a full (double) bed and small, collapsible table with chairs in the main room and two bunks in the back room. Could comfortably sleep six adults. No linens provided. It has electric and there are heating units in both rooms, but no air conditioning. No attached bathroom. No cooking allowed inside the cabin, and so no refrigeration unit or kitchenette of any kind. Closest camp bathroom is primitive (hole in the ground, no light). Have to drive across camp for plumbing and shower, which were about what you expect from a campsite. Very nice paved campfire area and large grill on site. Concession stand only open on the weekend.
All that said, the park is very nice. We had a great time and enjoyed all of the hiking available. And of course the statute.
Ron P
Great park! Statue of Chief Blackhawk worth the drive.
Deven Sterbenz
Great for a family day of hiking. Tried the stairs for the first time and almost couldn’t make it.
kirbykid16
Really fun time camping out there and seeing all the nature that it holds ! Got some good pictures of a Beatle that was flying around and doing its best.
Rudy Galfi
Great view from Blackhawk monument.
Miithia
We went here for a weekend with our RV and had fun! The park was nice, campsites were a good size, bathrooms were good (flush toilets and showers), and there was electrical and dump stations. The only complaint was that there was no water hookup per site and that the campsite map is deceptive. We were by a road, but didn't realize that it was the main road in and the drivers on that road are flying by (55+mph). It really was our fault for not looking at it on Google Maps first. We went hiking and brought our dog with us. It was beautiful, but more hilly and steep at times than expected. It was nice overall and we will be back!
Brenda Hatch
Very nice sites and well maintained. Great price.
Eddie & Gabe Squad
Lowden is a nice clean park for family gatherings and primitive walk in camping
RuthAnn Lillstrom
Beautiful park. A nice place to walk the dogs!
Ese Miklo
Beautiful park with small trails and a nice view of the river.
Simone Morris
Camped on the tent side, showers were available on the other side. They were clean and functional
Vicki Gibbons
Growing up, our family reunions were always held here. This is my home away from home.
Ben Bierdeman
A very nice park with a recently refinished Black hawk statue. Excellent camping, but sadly no shower.
Laura Stocker
Haven't been here since 5th grade school field trip in the 80's. Stopped by to see the Black hawk statue and see how much the area had changed since my younger days! Black hawk is looking grand!
Cristie Smith
Beautiful place to walk around. I would like to suggest maybe a bathroom/port a potty down somewhere along the path around the bottom of the stairs. Other than that, my kids & I really like it there.
Jeremy Nesemeier
I'm a local so Lowden Park is a much visited place for me. There are some good hiking trails along the river to explore, and of course the Blackhawk Statue. I've actually never stayed the night here, but I see a lot of campers and tents abound. There are a few good places for playgrounds and some ball sports.
Jose Sanchez
Its a great place for Adventure. Camping, rving, kayaking, kayak camping, hiking, fishing l luv this place....
Chris McCanse
It's a beautiful park but it does need some maintenance done to the road and some of the buildings. They did a very nice job fixing the statue and the view from at the bottom of the statue can be breathing at times.
Don Archer
Great park. Showers were hot and clean. Camp hosts were helpful. Unfortunately the Black Hawk statue is still covered but the rest of the grounds are well maintained. Some spots are a little tough to level but we managed. All-in-all, nice park.
Rosemary Curbeam
Love the park, and the statue of Blackhawk!
Dirk Schumann
Walking to Blackhawk is fun but going down to the river is a stair stepping challenge!
Christopher D. Sims
A beautiful park with lots of trees and paths to walk through. A breath o fresh air especially in the fall months when you want to escape everything and take a stroll in a natural setting.
Tape The Grape
Such a beautiful park with a beautiful view on the bluff
Parker Watson
Lovely place to go for a short hike, especially in the fall
Marycash Cash
Thank you for uncovering the statue, this park is a great park with camping and clean bathrooms
jim bob
I'd give it between a 3 star and 4 star rating. Camping pads need some clean up and maintenance. Bathrooms were def a 3 star at best. Horrible smell and very dated. Nice quiet campground, nice hosts.
Carrington Oliver
Fantastic State Park. The managers who run it are laid back and understanding when any problems arise. Spent 4 days there meeting up with other camping friends and had the single best camping experience of my life. The weather helped, but it was primarily due to the clean, spacious, and well managed campground/facilities. Parks for kids, fishing nearby, many hiking trails. A great all around visit, and i will definitely be coming back!
Kat Griffith
This might be the cleanest most well-kept Campground I've stayed at. Beautiful area the only reason it's four stars and not five is the mosquitoes which they can't help. That part of the country they tend to be thick.
Julie Bayer
We enjoyed our stay from Thurs-Sun at sites 54 and 55 in Shady Rest. There was plenty of room for our tent, our friend's camper and the Volkswagon Westfalia on the adjacent site. The bathroom on this side was clean and the front door was propped open for ventilation. Sunsets at the Blackhawk statue were lovely and there was ample room for bocce games.
Our only inconvenience was the camp host riding up in his golf cart while we were sitting around the fire and accusing us of parking on the grass and infringing on another site when our Nissan Rogue was well within the 40 ft drive with our friend's truck and camper. He didn't bother to get out of the cart to actually look, but told us to park the car off the site. This meant we had to lug our cooler and supplies to our car before bed. Moving our car meant we had to drive on the grass to get past the camper which seemed contrary to what he asked us not to do. Meanwhile, the site across from us had a vast parked in the grass along side a truck and 5 wheeler trailer. So much for a camp host!
This experience won't keep us from coming back since the sites are inexpensive and close to home. It was otherwise a great weekend despite the gap in hospitality.
Roger M
Great place to camp if relaxation is # one on your list. Shower room could be kept up alittle better, but hey your camping! October is very pretty with the changing of foliage. Never could understand why alcohol is prohibited in campground. People say it's a state law, but that is just not true!
Michael
awesome camp ground
Kevin Thompson
Great park along the Rock River, hiking trails, camping, and history!
michael stobaugh
Pretty park and well maintained. But very tight passage (trees) through the campground and some sites would be impossible for me to get my 32' trailer backed into, even though it's advertised as being 40' deep. Lot's of shade, too!
Gumaro Esparza
Love going here, looking across the river with Chief Blackhawk looking out over the land. Lots of parking and space for kids and adults to roam. Camping trailers are welcome and they have showers to help you stay fresh and clean.
John Dickson (What Will He Do Next?)
The camping was great. The trails are DANGEROUS. If the trails are not intended for bicycle use post a sign saying so. Installing 12" speed bump on every hill is basically a lethal man trap. I will be calling to complain also. I have cracked ribs and my dad is scrape, bruised, and possible a few ribs as well.
emcee 98
The was my first time back to Lowden for camping in many years. When I was growing up, my family used to camp here at least once a year. It is one of the few places I know of in Illinois that has Class C camping (park and haul your stuff in to the site). As far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to camp. There are some really nice sites here. There is also tons of Class A and B sites. Right next to the Rock River for fishing/boating/canoeing, great hiking trails, and many good restaurants nearby.
Although this is my first time back in many years, I think it's well past time to start coming again at least once or twice per year now that I have started a family of my own (this is the first full-blown camping experience for both my wife and daughter, who are both extremely happy with the experience).
Dallas Turner
The road through the park is rough, but the view of the river valley below is a wonderful vista.
Jeffrey Hadaway
Great place to park your camper, or tent. Clean ,well maintained.
Kevin C
I've been going to this park since I was a kid. Now that I have kids if my own, we come here ALL the time for day hikes and camping. We prefer the primitive campsites. These sites are walk in with relatively close parking. We bring our custom made off road radio flyer wagon to haul our camping supplies to the primitive site. It's very quiet and peaceful back there. The hiking is awesome. Those stairs down to the river are a real workout!!! There is a switchback trail from river trail to Blackhawk statue that is a bit treacherous but a lot of fun. We will be back soon to take our new job boat on the river to do some fishing. The staff across the street at the campground are absolutely awesome! Bathrooms, if you are looking for a 5 star latrine then go to a hotel. All bathrooms at all outdoor parks are just that, outdoor bathrooms. If ya don't like them dig a hole and poop in the woods. Happy camping!
Dave K
Great park, beautiful views of the restored Black Hawk Native American statue along the Rock River. Close to Chicago and enough hiking to keep you busy for the weekend.
Derek Such
Great place to camp or day trip. We have camped here and had an awesome time in the past. I personally like the campsites on the east side of HW 33 better than the more open sites on the west side but all are nice. There is also the giant statue that is a tribute to the Native American's of the area that overlooks the Rock River. There are nice views of the river and trails that you can hike down to the river. The trees are beautiful in the fall. Castle Rock and White Pines State Parks are also close by so if you are day tripping it is nice to hit up all three or if you are camping there is plenty to see outside of the one state park.
Kuldeep Gaur
We were here in Lowden State Park for tent camping. It is just 1 hr 30 min drive to west Chicago .This place is more suitable for RVs and is not so good for tent camping.
Campsites are very close to each other so it's not the place if you want privacy.
There is road next to this park so you will hear traffic sound in night.
It's a pretty small park. There was a shop where you can get firewood and essential items.
However it took long time to find camp host but they were really helpful. We requested to change our campsite and he helped us immediately.
Black hawk Statue is definitely a worth visit which is just 10 min walk away but it was covered for restoration work.
Steve Jankowski
My wife had never seen that Blackhawk statue. I know that's not the proper name. We took some time to view it up close, then took a drive alone hwy 2 to see it across the river. I've seen it many times but it's still an awesome sight.
Donald Ferguson
This park is a must-see for visitors to the area, especially now that the scaffolding is down from the Blackhawk Statue renovations. The park has the usual playground equipment, hiking trails, concession stands, camping areas, and picnic grounds... but the river overlook, the giant statue, and the trail down to Ganymede Spring on the riverbank make it unique. This park contains priceless memories and will continue to make new ones for generations to come.
Skylar Moran
The class C walk-in (tent) sites are the best I've found near Chicago. The Park only has a few trails but they are good, specifically on the bluffs. Usually easy to get a spot. It's convenient to drive across the Rock River to Oregon for a meal or supplies.
Robert
Nice place for a weekend get away. Close to the town of Oregon if you want a night out.
Matthew Larson
Always love this place, any time off the year.
Love to camp in the primitive sites. Beautiful park that is well kept.
amy
Love camping here. Trails are easy, however if you take the stairs down to the river take the trail back up. There are several options to do so.
Bradley Goodwin
Great place to camp and hike, even look at the Blackhawk statue.
Sandi Kress
Decent showers in the camp ground. But only 2. Small park but decent. Firewood priced above average. $6 a bundle. Good for mushroom hunters.
Julie Olson
Outhouses. No real bathrooms that I could find. The river is a bit dangerous, no wading or swimming. It is beautiful and relaxing. Lots of trees and shady areas. Hiking trails. Watch for poison ivy.
Thomas Armour
I grew up near this park. Wonderful memories of a place that seemed hidden in an otherwise unassuming landscape. I returned this last weekend with full fall colors. It did not disappoint.
Troy Layne
We go here often to hike and alway enjoy how quiet it is here. There's not much in the way of people here and those that are here seem polite and keep things quiet. Cool little park to check out.
diana canty
This park has really nice campsites. I have enjoyed it for over 50 years.
Brian Becker
Beautiful, quiet campgrounds, scenic paths and overlooks of the Rock river from on and below lovely bluffs.
Mariah Mahon
The campground is right near the road, campsites are spacious, we were very close to the chief Blackhawks statue, and we were also close to the bathrooms. This place also has pullthrough sites and was very well kept.
Martin Spencer
As a State Park, it's very good. It's well maintained and beautiful. It only has 30 amp electric. Reservations recommended but has a circle of spots on first come basis.
Dawn Marie
Beautiful place to hike and camp!
dino pedicini
I love to camp here, close to home and nice people.
Sarwar Minar
Excellent place for sight seeing, walking, little bit of hiking, camping. Super awesome views around...
Sean OBrien
Trails are in poor condition. Signs that trails are steep and hazardous are no excuse for rotted out steps that look like they should have been replaced 20 years ago.
Brian H
Trails are well maintained and provide some challenge as you hike up the bluffs from the rock river. I saved some gooseberries and "black caps" for y'all.
Heather zimmermann
Blackhawk Statue State Park is My Home away from Home 😊🌞🌻☺️ I was the First girl to ever work @ this park & I go every spring to go down & clean up the Springs for everyone to enjoy each year 💕🌺 …
George Hettinger
Loved it, just beware the on site vendor. Fire wood wasn't seasoned and basically unburnable. I should have noticed the high moisture content when I picked up a bundle and remarked about how heavy it was
Halley Smith
Facility is top notch.. Camp hosts are friendly bathhouse is clean, plenty of hot water and very affordable. Along the rock river beautiful..quiet.
Larry Marcrum
Lowden SP is my favorite campground. It is very quite and relaxing .Many nice trails and beautiful scenery. I suggest going in the town of Oregon and trying the Black Hawk Steakhouse for dinner!!

Donna Cowley-Thompson
Always a wonderful drive through this park and of course we had to see what Blackhawk look like with his robe off the statue is a very commanding figure that demonstrates our history is very much a part of all of us
Mark Libby
I liked the camping but the hiking caused one of us to get a rash. Likely it was poison oak that we missed on the trail by the statue.
Thomas Raleigh
I love walking thru the park it's beautiful in the fall. Plus good exercise.
Jim Johnson
Very nice park. Over look of the river
Blackhawk statue looks wonderful after the much needed repairs.
Troy Nethery
Nice looking campsites and the staue is cool. Nice over look of the river. Not really anything for hiking trails to speak of.
Way Toofazt
Good camp sites, great place to stay on the way into or out of Chicago. Trains were great as was the fishing and canoeing.
Teri Smith
Pretty area went to see Chief Blackhawk statue. If it weren't so far we would bring the grandkids there to play. Lots of room for littles to burn up energy! I saw a sign for consessions but didn't look to see what they sold.
Judy Bowling
Nice campground but too noisy for me. Good place for family get togethers. Blackhawk statue is currently covered up for repairs.
Darrell Compton
Really cool park .. loved it there.
Jennifer Daly
We love Lowden, it's fun safe & friendly. The stairs are a must but might kill you 😜 …
Ben Minnis
A fantastic weekend getaway. Camping was a little noisy with highway traffic. Nice area to fish. Camp staff was friendly.
Michelle Lyman
Awesome view from way up high in Oregon IL. Variety of trails. The one I went on was more difficult for me because of incline and rugged terrain.
nicole pauley
Statue is definitely something to go see it's beautiful

Pretty cool trails and hiking trails, has many picnic areas and shelters fro grilling.
Erik Malinowski
Fantastic place for tent camping as u r sourounded by the forest and not other campers where I camped, although there are options to camp in a big foresty field near other campers as well as rv camping.
Veronica Reyes
Unfortunately the weather didn't hold up so it was a quick visit to the Lorado Taft and back to the car. Will definitely need to find my way back again.
Kate Lehrke
Great place to camp, hike & enjoy what we have locally.
K. Asen
One of our favorite Illinois state parks. Please get the Indian fixed. So sad that our state has money to give away for so many useless things. No money to fix a historical piece of art.
Bonnie Toms
