Reviews of Kankakee River State Park
We live about 40 minutes from Kankakee River State Park. We decided to go camping this weekend, the campground is very well maintained, campground was clean, bathrooms were clean, and special thanks to Camp Hosts, Tom and Tammy. Large sites, easy back in, fire racks/pits in each site, electric at most if not all sites.
Lots of family’s enjoying a beautiful weekend, and tons of out of state license plates, which is always a plus. We walked the walking/bike trail Friday evening and we were greeted by some baby fawns, and a really cool spider web.
The only negative I would have to say, I had to call support to make reservations, and they set us up in the Chippewa Campground, which was closed. Make sure your reservation is at the Potawatomi Campground not the Chippewa Campground.
We will definitely be returning for more enjoyable weekends.
We really loved this park & campgrounds. The showers are clean & big. All bathroom facilities quite nice with each mirror and sink has outlets. It serves 3 loops so it can get busy early morn & later evenings. Plenty to see & do.
We loved our time here, but especially the host check in process! "Don't call me Sir, we are all just here to have a good time," is how it began and it was amazing onward. Clean, mostly quiet, and lovely spaces.
Beautiful area abundant wildlife. Many rock formations and little caves dispersed throughout. The river has a good current and some white water in a few areas, but just as many shallow shelly areas to walk in. Large harmless snakes and pretty wildflowers. People left garbage and fishing hooks all over the place so be careful if u have small children, pets, or go barefoot..best to bring water shoes with. Def coming back but I really wish it was open later than 8 so we could at least watch the sunset!
Decent fall colors. Decent hike, not challenging. Not nearly as good as Starved Rock imo. Mind you that's my experience from Rock creek and connected trail. We didn't get to do riber trail.
The K3 State Park is my go to for just about everything! Awesome hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, and everything in between. I visit year round and try to make it out at least 3-4 a month. Wonderful views and very clean. I can’t stress enough how important it is to use the garbage cans or pack out what you brought.
Really cool and beautiful state park an hour or so southwest of Chicago. This park stretches nearly 10 miles along the Kankakee river. A paved biking/running path stretches the entire way, making it a great destination for a day or biking or a picturesque option for long runs. The park has two campgrounds, a unique and photogenic suspension bridge, a waterfall, and a park office. Highly recommend this spot for exercising or enjoying nature.
Hadn’t been here for awhile and as usual with the weather so nice it Twas Lovely! We walked after parking near Rock Creek Suspension Bridge and crossed and then took a path by the river and walked away and back! Fresh after the snow there was lots of trash. Next time I’m going to bring a bag! The river left some but most was from humans who need to stop throwing their garbage everywhere. The can caught my eye cause not aluminum! Rusty! Found under the bridge on a bank on the river side of the creek. The river must have popped it up lol
Pretty awesome sate park with incredible views. You can fish, walk trails, kayak, bike, and more. Theres pinic areas and some playgrounds along with several camping areas. Theres also horse trails. Just a great park overall.
Beautiful park with lots of great hiking and exploring. Our family enjoyed a picnic and saunter with our young ones.
Update: We tried a family bike ride though the fall colors and it was lovely. The trail is nicely paved most of the way.
Beautiful park with lots of paved walking trails. Perfect for walking/running or biking.
Potawatomi campground is awesome with large, shaded sites. 30/50 amp electric only. Fresh water and dump station available.
Clean bathhouse.
This is a great place to experience nature. Paved bike path is a great ride. Don't miss the iconic green suspension bridge over Rock Creek.
A huge thanks to the IDNR and the Friends of Langham Island, who are helping to stop the honeysuckle and other invasive species of plants. It's sad to see how the bluebells have been decimated as a result.
I love it here, always my go to place when I have had a bad day. Good for fishing, hiking, biking and dog friendly. Lots to see and enjoy if you love nature.
Very peaceful park with a bike trail and lots of space for picnics and fishing.
We loved this park. Campground is large with 3 rings . Most of the sites are large & shady. There's plenty of things to do & see. The campgrounds share 1 shower facility. There are 5 showers for women and 5 for men. They're large & very clean compared to Indiana state parks we're used to.Do yourselves a favor & check out the Indian caves nearby too!
We stayed at Potawatomi campground for 2 nights and it was a wonderful experience. Hosts at the entrance of campsite are super kind, very informative, friendly and really helpful. There’s a lot of activities around the camp, biking, hiking, trail, fishing, etc. I would recommend to be prepared for insects and mosquitos this season.
This park has 15+ miles of trails & a paved riverwalk ideal for bikes & strollers, a covered bridge, an old graveyard, and playground equipment (including slides & swings).
Beautiful place to come and have a walk or a picnic with your family or friends
There is so much to do here. Camping, bike trails, hiking trails, fishing, hunting, I mean endless fun. Have a picnic, or just enjoy the river. Its very well kept and clean. This is a hidden gem that not too many people seem to know about.
This park is about an hour or so south of Chicago. Always very well maintained. Really nice place for people who live close. For me, the smallmouth bass, that is why I come. The Kankakee river in the state park area is to shallow for boat traffic so it is a great place to wade and fish. There are 2 campgrounds, which I have not stayed at, a small concession which I don't know when it opens, lots of pit toilets which I have had to use and lots of space to spread out. But it is about the fishing for me...and on those good days, all about the catching. Like any other river you would wade into, watch out for the deep holes.
Camped without reservation AFTER the weekend. Plenty of choices. Nice shower house.Fall colors along Kankakee River just beginning to show. Campground has many oaks, hickory, osage orange trees. State Park has kayak launch, bike paved trails , hiking trails playgrounds and GREAT scenery.
My daughter and I kayaked from Island View to the Rock River. We took our time and the river was a little low. It was a perfect day. Getting out at Rock River area was a little challenging. We had carry out kayaks a100 yards or so. The water was crystal clear. Alot of fun.
This is a nice place to go for people of all abilities. You can park close to things (river and bridge) and walk very little, or you can walk really far on improved asphalt paths. Accessible but basic toliets spread out to varous parking lots. There are some swings and playground equipment as well as picnic areas.
Beautiful river, good fishing and camping. Lot of wildlife...
Ample parking, easy to access. Trail is awesome for biking. One part of the trail is gravel, and the other is paved. Highly recommend visiting this beautiful park and riding bikes. Saw lots of people fishing- not a fisherman myself- so not really sure about the accommodations in that regard. Loved visiting this park, can’t wait to go back.
I was so pleasantly surprised by how nice this hike was. I hiked from the campgrounds to the visitors center, up rock creek and back. It was a beautiful sunny day so that helped make it great. It is muddy at some points so wear hiking boots! The Kankakee River has a strong current. Rock creek is really neat too. The canyon walls along the trail were surprising and super beautiful. I plan on coming back here to camp this summer.
Nice place to get out and be one with nature. The trails were great. Ample parking available with a park swing set and plenty of places to meet up and cook out.
The biking trail in Kankakee River State Park is really good! Although we couldn’t really see the River in most part of the biking trail, it still felt very nice to experience the forest. Would highly recommend to people interested in biking! There were many sitting areas that people can do picnic with friends and families. We also saw some people playing in the River, and it looks peaceful and enjoyable. A good place for families to have weekend getaway.
Gorgeous spot, a bit more crowded than other State Parks we have visited but still lovely. Camp Host was very helpful. Kankakee is a basic town which is very convenient with a Walmart.
Excellent park for hiking, bicycling, camping (whe it's open), fishing, and canoeing. Lots to see. Can get very busy on beautiful days.
Loved walking the trail in this park along the Kankakee River. It has an interesting landscape for Northern IL. There is plenty of places to park, pic-nic tables and open spaces
Love this park! The walking path is very nice! It is a paved walkway that goes on for miles and miles along the Kankakee River.
This place is nice, clean, huge and wonderfull. Alot of parking spots close to the river. Many spots to fish. There is few playgrounds so you can take your kids with you. They have grills, restrooms, benches and shelters. There is also a campground there. More info about it in the office. Great place to walk, fish, relax, picnic, take some great pictures, have a great time with your family.
I was born in Kankakee but not raised there. I have always loved the state park and the trails. The views of the river and the natural limestone rock formations formed around it are amazing. I have so many memories here as a kid and have made more as an adult. It's just a beautiful place to get a walk in and check out the area.
As of late 2020 Kankakee River State Park has opened 1/2 of its Potawatomi RV camping area. I was told the remaining sites would open Spring 2021, no mention of the Chippewa Sites at this time. Many sites will accommodate 5th wheels and longer travel trailers. However, there are several sites that it would be very difficult to park any larger trailer models or RV's; many low branches, driveways with trees on both sides, and very tight turns. Doing a walk through of the area is highly recommended prior to making a reservation.
The restroom/shower house was very clean (recently renovated) but there was absolutely NO hot water. This may not have been so bad in the summer time but in late October a cold shower is not a good thing.
Beautiful walking trails
Quiet, relaxing, scenic, pretty, and there were areas you can sit have snack on picnic tables. Only inconvenience was lack of garbage cans and water to wash hands after using portable potty
Peaceful and mild trail to walk or bike. Slightly flooded from the rains on my last trip. Part of the nine-mile trail was closed at the low points do to flooding.
Otherwise, a nice place for cooking out and camping. Camping is "closed" this year due to the dreadful Emerald Ash Beetle.
Love it great walking, running and biking. 90% if the trail gives you shade for hot days and shelter of the canopy on rainy days. If you watch for tails that lead into the woods great hiking and you could mountain bike it
Beautiful park! There's a good mixture of well paved trails and areas where you can go off the beaten path. I've had many picnics there, and there is a nice playground for children. Everytime I visit I find something new. The waterfalls are a must see part of the park, and you can see them from a well paved area or you can climb down into the river itself and get right next to them (or in the case of the smaller ones, you can get on them). Use the buddy system if youre going deeper into the woods just in case you roll an ankle, and watch out for strong currents in parts of the river. Also pay attention to poisonous plants and sharp leaves!
Plenty of free parking lots. Kids had fun at the playground. Bathrooms were clean. The hiking path is paved. Beautiful views all around. The leaves were all colors. Pack a lunch and stay a while.
Nice park, clean, clean restroom/showers, camp hosts are very nice & friendly and welcoming.
We stayed 3 times during September & October. Talking about returning somtime in 2023.
Gorgeous views and trails. I came down for a short visit and wished there was a bike rental facility nearby as the bike trail looks absolutely amazing! This is a great place to get grounded with nature.
The park is beautiful and the river is gorgeous. River walk is amazing and loved flying my drone there. We did fish for little bit but didnt catch anything but others did, so atleast I didnt feel like a moron that I was fishing at a dead spot.Tons of parking and great place to relax.
Great to bike, fishing, picnic, visiting historic places. Wading the Rock Creek looking for Smallmouths is one of my favorite things to do. The scenario doesn’t get any better around here
Come here all the time just to chill with friends. Very quiet and relaxing. The trail is fun to walk around and the cemetery is incredibly creepy when it starts to get dark.
We navigated up Rock Creek to the falls starting from the bike path bridge with two of our daughters (13 and 16). It was challenging at times to find a good footing, but it was doable. We recommend heading north from the same parking lot (by the bike path bridge), crossing the highway, and heading north on the wide path. There are a couple of paths down to the creek along this route. The path down that is in sight of the falls (just south of it) is quite steep and challenging, even for adults. I recommend heading down a little further down stream and washing up to the falls.
When at the falls, you can slide down them with or without inflatables and such. But be aware that there are deep holes at the bottom of the falls at either end where the falls meets the side. I'm 6'2" and never touched the bottom of the hole. The current does not pull you down but it can definitely feel disconcerting if you're not expecting it.
Anyway... enjoy. Hope this helped.
Nice park to fish and walk the trails. Kids enjoyed it.
A beautiful and calming place. I really enjoyed just sitting and watching the river. I look forward to exploring the trails soon.
Very, very woodsy and scenic. We haven't found the path down to the river yet. But walked the main trail thus morning...with butterflies all along the way. The bathhouse was wonderful...puts most state parks to shame. There's lots to see and explore. Our site was fairly level and very shaded. Site 29 in loop Hawthorne.
Always a lovely time coming here. Whether for a stroll, or going to one of their parks. My favorite is the little cemetery.
Beautiful state park. So many trails and so peaceful.
Have been camping at the Potawatomi campgrounds here for 40 years. Clean, friendly, well maintained. Fantastic place to bring the family. While in Kankakee, consider Reeds Canoe tours on the river. Really fun. Day trips here are great as well as camping.
Very nice park located on the Kankakee River. It gas long partially paved biking trail.
On south side, Rock creek crossing park. Rock creek has waterfall, short walk across the street.
Fantastic camp sites, clean bathroom and shower facilities. The people working were extremely nice and super helpful.
The park itself is gorgeous with multiple views of the Kankakee River. There appeared to be multiple areas where access to the river was available throughout the park. Absolutely recommend a visit here.
Lots of trails and easy hiking.
Good deer hunting if you know where to look
Nice park close to towns, but in the county. Nice paved walking trails, river access, and fishing. Access to Rock Creak and able to get into the water. 👍
This is a great place to have picnics, grill, bring groups of friends to get together. There are numerous parking places equipped with outhouses as well as pavilions. You'll also find great walking/biking trails and locals say the fishing is good here.
Great place to to for kayaking and biking. They have these bikes that you are able to rent pay as you for $1 per 30 min.
Nice 10ish mile bike path goes the length of the park, north half is paved and south half is crushed stone. Camping, pavilions, play grounds, restrooms, open spaces, river views, hiking trails, etc.
This is a beautiful place to visit. Love to have family days here and bring a picnic. You can enjoy the river, walk the trails, fish, or ride bikes
Definitely good place for picnic, very peaceful. Great place to spend day outside. Great for biking and walking/jogging, they have nice little stops along the way.
Great campground with great host pretty clean but shower house needs alittle more attention to keep clean but all sites pretty well maintained an pretty peaceful
Lots of spiders & outhouses need to be cared for & tp stocked more often. Otherwise, nice time, nice campers & hosts. Also nice if you have a dog.
Very big and lots of surprises! Great parks for kids and lots of path for bikes and dogs. Bathrooms are never open unfortunately.
Very shallow river, under 6" and not suitable for kayaking (late August). The campground is decent but not very maintained. The grill pit was broken. Make sure to pack insect repellent because the mosquitoes were all over the place.
Love going hunting here. The trails are plentiful where you won’t be seeing anyone. The camping grounds have their own parking per ground. Easy to get lost at night! Been there was a lot of fun tho. Please if you go drinking is fun but let’s keep the park clean.
Stop at an area Walmart, pick up a day fishing pass for Illinois and a cheap rod and reel. Add a cold frappachino and hang out by the crystal clear river here and have a brilliant day fishing for rock bass.
Really beautiful place to explore. The trails are wide and you can pretty much just follow the river. We were able to bike without feeling like there were too many people in the area.
Beautiful little spot to enjoy the river with trees growing on the old bridge supports.
Stayed middle of October. Great atmosphere, bathrooms were very clean and accessible. Loved the campgounds.
I love coming to the Kankakee state Riverpark is quiet and beautiful the trails are nice it’s very clean the river is right here You feel safe. You can smell the freshness of the Pines and the dried leaves. I can’t wait to start riding my bike here!
Beautiful scenery along the river, good bike/hike trail
Sooo beautiful, Check in couple were so nice sites were nice bathrooms were mostly clean..bring TP for sure...water low so couldn't fish but was nice...
The park is so nice, easy to access, quiet and very natural. Great for walking along the river's shore
Such beauty in nature at Kankakee River state park. Take a canoe or kayak from Reed's Canoe rentals in Kankakee and see the river in its splendor. Today was something I wish I could bottle. Go and see for yourself.
Clean paths, beautiful scenery. Will definitely go back.
Beautiful place for a walk or bike ride along the river. Be very careful this time of year, when a hedge apple falls out of the trees and hits you, it will hurt.
Amazing place to take the kids, it was beautiful and relaxing which was much needed with the current political and pandemic stress.
Stopped here on the way back from Bears Camp. Great park. Beautiful scenery.
Great place to camp. Camp among the tree's,nice camp sites, clean modern restrooms with showers. camp sites have electricity.
One word. Excellent. Excellent from signing in with the host, to the site, and to the beauty of the park. Hard to leave. AAAAA+++++
One of Illinois's better state parks. Trails are great for biking. A bit of tall hiking and climbing available near the parking. Wish Illinois would get the snack bars open and consider allowing food trucks in. We tend to go to this park a few times a year.
This place has natural beauty and it is a very scenic area for the whole family to explore!
Beautiful place!!! Plan on going back when the weather permits!!!
Beautiful Park and trails, especially the creek and waterfall. We also camped in our tent two nights. The host was very friendly and the facilities were as expected. Two factors that prevent 5 stars: bathrooms were cleaned in the morning during the busiest time of need (who doesn't need to pee right when they get up???) and there aren't any trails from the campground down to the river. Overall great experience!
THis park is beautiful. Miles of asphalt path with nature on both sides and a beautiful river. Very much reminded to visit and hike while getting some much needed fresh air!!
Beautiful walking trails along the river. So peaceful and scenic.
Peaceful and a great place for a nice long bike ride.
Pretty and peaceful. I preferred the grass path to the more populated river walk. I went to see the waterfall. Dont go for the waterfall. Go for walk with your dogs in the woods. Its lovely.
We stopped there on our way to Chicago to get the dogs and us fresh air in the shade.
Superb place for spending whole weekend hiking and biking
I love Kankakee river state park. There are great trails and a nice picnic area. I highly recommend a visit to this state park.
One of my favorite fishing spots! Park is wonderful for hikes , grilling and fishing ! People have to pick up after them selves more though would be my only complaint
The scenery is breathtaking and the overall cleanliness of the park is great.
Illinois doesn't offer much good river fishing, the Kankakee is a noted exception. Clean park, plenty of parking, miles of nice trails and creeks to explore. The photos are of Rock Creek and trail off the main river.
interesting place, if someone likes bikes, I recommend it
Natural treasure so close to Chicago! Easy drive down I-57, and you even pass a rest area, if needed. Ample parking, good trails. Nice day trip.
Every time I come here I come to the realization that this is my favorite place to go, whether that be for biking, a walk, or just sitting and thinking. I truly love this park.
Nice park, pretty easy hiking, water views, kayaking
Great walking trail. Asphalt so good footing and no mud. Can hear the river or wind in the trees.
Just missed sunset but still got a nice photo
Very scenic place with plenty of trails
Such a beautiful place! Never too busy we love walking our dog here and enjoying nature.
Miles of walking and biking paths. Or Kankakee River is beautiful with its different islands.
It was wonderful to be out in God's creation. A very calming and peaceful break from everyday life
Beautiful park, very well kept and nice place for family gatherings
Beautiful views of the river, nice paved trails, no admission fee, as far as we could see. Well-maintained. The trails and park as a whole were not well-marked though. A bit confusing to navigate. We didn't see any trail head markings, map postings didn't have "you are here" marks, etc.
My husband got his 1st fish🎣 he was so happy . 😊 …
Nice park to visit. It has walking and biking trails. Picnic tables available. Nice benches to sit on by the water. Nice place to walk your dog too. Cons: not too many garbage cans available. Some of the toilets were closed.
Beautiful place to enjoy with family and specially children .small canals are good place to sit in the water 💧 …
Great place to relax, walk and explore nature
Great boating dock. Good fishing, archery, sotgun range and wind down after a good hike.
We love kayaking this River! The state park is beautiful! Walking paths, Parks, picnic areas!! Fun for everyone!
Great place to go out with family and have fun.
We enjoyed our visit to Kankakee River State Park! The park was very clean and beautifully mowed. You can fish, hike, bike, etc. We want to thank the park staff for all their hard work! #idnradventures
Go to place for quiet, serene atmosphere. Trails are usually clean, as long as people clean after their pets. You can walk down a path to the Kankakee River, sit at a picnic table and enjoy. There is a paved trail for biking or walking. There are safe, wooden and elevated decks for watching the river from above. There are shops, etc. nearby on IL 43, IL 50, and other thoroughfares.
Large park, nice trails, great for a sunny day visit, yet personally I would not want to visit soon after a rain or a cloudy moist day there are just too much dead threes, leafs with not enough maintenance...
BEST CHICKEN SANDWICH AROUND! Good service. Great prices! Don't bother going anywhere else if great chicken is what you're after!
Loved it and plan on returning. Such a beautiful park with a mighty Illinois river pushing through it. Large green trees, plus picnic areas, it's a very nice state park. Right outside of Chicago and full of nature. Go and enjoy...
Really beautiful expansive state park that follows the Kankakee river
This is my favorite place in the whole world. There's a few hidden gems here where you can swim, rock climb. Or even cliff jump. I go down with friends and enjoy a cigar and relax in the sun when the weather permits. I strongly advise nature enthusiasts to check it out. It's far away from civilization to make it seem like you're on a vacation. Love this place! Been going since 2013!
Beautiful trails. Kayaking is amazing out here.
Very peaceful. Wife and I used to come here, and got married here 25 years ago. Love this place. So many trails that you can walk.
This was a fun State Park to visit. Very clean, awesome and hospitable host at the entrance of the campgrounds and nice hiking paths. The campground bathrooms were clean and cleaned often. I hope to have the good fortune to visit again.
Clean , nice trails with a few hidden treasures along the way.
The trails on the south east side are shorter than we thought but there are many points that allow you to hike along the river. The trailers on the north west side are extensive and very wooded. Fun park, we had a great time.
Beautiful wallk on a paved path along the river.
Cool climbing features to get to the beach. Loved it!
Great place for hiking, fishing, and picnics
Needs a little updating not bad for a picnic or nature viewing
Great place for the whole family. Parks, river walk, trails, biking, hiking, fishing, rental bikes, restrooms, concessions, and more
Not a bad little Park could use some work on the deck
It has miles and miles of easy walking, biking around paths. If you are more adventurous there are many hidden gems leading to the river, you can walk on the river banks and beaches depends how high the water is. There are cliffs, hanging rocks, waterfall and a cave! Good for faimily adventure
Penty of parking and many restrooms.
A great way to get away from the everyday busyness we all deal with.
There is plenty to do here, from the bike trails, to the fishing piers and the pavilions. There is even a cemetery and different Monuments and posts dedicated to historic Rockville. There is a dedicated handicap pavillion near the green bridge. You could almost have a new experience with each visit, and there is something enjoyable for all ages. The trail ranges from beginner to intermediate if you leave the park.
Great beautiful scenic park. Grandkids, age 10 and 13 loved it. We walked down waterway that led to the river. Kids and I loved walking in water over stones, saw small fish. Even nice in the downpour. Definitely will go again.
Beautiful area to walk through and visit
Went to meet up with friends to see Neowise. We were to meet up at the park parking lot, but realized after arriving that the park was already closed at 8 and they were kicking people out. Plus it was a really wooded area, so not great for comet watching. We met at the lot and waited for the ranger/security to come by, so we asked him where we might be able to go and got directions to a better place nearby. The park seemed beautiful even after dark, so I'll have to go back sometime.
Big park with long, wide trails and a lot of access to the river. We only had a short visit today and plan to go back when more sections open up (currently in shelter in place order). My son wants to consider this place for his scout archery camp out.
This park is absolutely beautiful and every site to camp is awesome and big. We have a class C, lots of room all around! Love this place! You will too!
Very beautiful area, all the paths are well maintained. Also the restrooms were quite clean. The park is located right on the river, so there is very good access. Have plenty of playgrounds for the children, as well as numerous picnic shelters.
The park is well maintained and kept very clean. The bicycle/pedestrian path is easy to moderate and offers many breathtaking views. I typically visit early morning on weekends and during the week and have never found it crowded during my visits.
Beautiful and not crowded at all
beautiful place and great hiking.
I'm 90 % positive we caught a 6 pound small mouth out of here . Did not have a scale or measuring tape. My 4 year old hooked it with a jig head and a giant helgrimite he found under a rock. I held it against his leg to get an rough measurement and let it go swiftly . Great experience. I also hooked a 10 pound channel on a rooster tail. Will return.
Great place to wade fish for smallmouth bass
It is a nice place, to de-stress I like it, I hope to return soon.
Nice and clean place.Good for walking. River wasn't a good idea to dog let go into water, because after a day he get infection. I sow of couples animals who was death and was in this river. Some people are fishing, but I don't know, can eat this fish???
For walk is good but not for swimming.
Great for hiking, picnics and river fun!
Great place for a long walk, a short stroll, or a picnic with family and friends.
Paved trails, covered bridges, swinging bridges, rocky creeks, gigantic river with tree covered islands.
We had a great day of hiking, fishing, and just wading in the water. We followed Rock Creek up stream away from the Kankakee River. There were plenty of great picture areas. We will be going back again to explore more.
It was great we love It my kids have fun in the river
We stopped here near sunset, and the view down the river was amazing. The park was very clean and the facilities (including bathrooms) were well maintained.
Fun place to enjoy nature and go fishing
Stunning views driving to and through the park. My only regrets were not being able to take photos and not planning an actual visit as we were passing through. Take the drive - make time to stop and enjoy the unique views, picturesque highways covered in tree canopy. this is a place we have added as a must re-visit in the future.
Shrimp season starts June. Bring a net and have fun. Catch release please.
I had so much fun there.
This park is very nice and well kept. My wife and I like to go out walking here with our son, but the pathways can be a bit narrow. Especially crossing the bridge, otherwise it's a great family place to enjoy the outdoors.
As long as you can get there before 10am on the weekends you're good, after that there's hardly any place to park and it gets busy. Good place to take the pup for a walk. Nice to fish and there's a hunting area(s).
One of my families favorite places to go!
A beautiful place to walk, jog, bike or even drive through. Many well kept trails and paths following through the woods and along the river and creeks!
Park is nice and big so it is not croweded even on weekends. We enjoyed in the river view and my little guy loved peaking the flowers for the first time. I'm dissapointed that there were no any baby swing in the whole park. On the other side there are a lot of swing for kids and adults so put some baby swings, please.
Great place to enjoy a walk along the river. Lots of birdwatching. I wish more of the trail was unpaved but that's just my own preference. Great trail for bikes. Definitely a good place to bring the family for the day.
Great place to hike and enjoy. Enough places to set up barbeque. Trail and send the whole day with family. Oh yes and there is fishing if you are into that
Such a beautiful park!
Great! Nice and peaceful.. great for a quick city getaway. The river is a bit busy and difficult to fish in, but the scenery and trails are very nice. Good quick family getaway.
Love coming here, it's a beautiful place with alot to explore. 💚💚 …
First time here and it's a great place to hang out when you have a free day
Its a very seclusive National Park, but the traffic can be kind of loud when hiking on the trails.
It was nice to see, lots of paths and parts to walk to. There are many groves you can have an outdoor event at. Sign by entrance says NO ALCOHOL so I think it's more family-oriented.
A lot of the camping groves towards the west end are somewhat disheveled / haven't been maintained in a while I noticed. Either the 2017 season hasn't kicked in or budgetary reasons, call first before planning an outdoor overnighter there.
The highlight of this part is the long walking/biking path along the river. Trees provide lots of shade. They also have lots of picnic grounds and camping is available too. We often see people fishing from the banks of the river. It is also open during winter.
Great place for a quiet walk.
Can't be beat for bike trails and hiking. Try exploring the north side across the road for more interesting adventures. Just please stay on the paths! Waterfall ahead!
A hidden gem in Illinois... Beautiful, extensive park with crushed rock running trails, paved bike trails, and hiking opportunities galore. All well tended, with beautiful wildlife, the Kankakee River to admire, and Rock Creek to cool your feet in.
Be sure to stop at the main park and get a map and some park information after a former governor screwed up the funding certain parts of the park are being remodeled/reopened and fun will be had by all!
Great place for a morning walk.
Clean park with nice trails.
We went down a short distance along the Rock Creek Trail. It was the most fun we had. The kids loved exploring the limestone cliffs. A little adventure and ✨ magic
Very great place to take a walk or hike. Bring the family and don't forget your dog or dogs, they'll enjoy it also.
This park would have have easily been a five star park if it weren't for the swarm of mosquitos living in the grass. It's right by the river, has play structures all over, plenty of picnic places, but I left covered in mosquito bites. Definitely bring some bug spray if you're coming here.
Beautiful park. Next to the river. Campgrounds.
Beautiful state park. Well kept.
Hidden gem with scenic trails for an easy hike amongst nature. Rock creek is very clean with easy access. Great way to spend a day outdoors.
Rode the w. Section. No view of river except in park and a cleared swath for gas line. One big hill just outside park. Don't try to glide through it. Treacherous curves and a metal post in the middle of the trail at the bottom. That is if you are peddling in a easterly direction. Going west, you will have to gear down and work your way up.
Haven't been to Kankakee River State Park since my children were little, (12-13 years). And before that, not since I was a kid. Things were as I'd always remembered... Very scenic, and just the right amount of grounds maintenance. Tidy, but not too groomed.
I was a bit disappointed to find that the snack shack was closed, and the soda machine wasn't functioning either. But still had a nice afternoon teaching my five year old granddaughter how to skip stones on the Kankakee river... Worth a few hours of your life to visit this park.
It's a wonderful park but the bike trail has been very poorly maintained for several years. Fallen trees are not removed for weeks at a time, the paved areas are full of debris and dangerous, and the Davis Creek section has been closed for at least two months because of flood damage. I would rather have them charge an admission fee and maintain the park better than what is happening now. There are no concessions, just a few soda machines. Most of the rest rooms are closed. Recently, there has been some badly needed repaving but that's because someone provided grant money for the project. Sadly, the park is another victim of the mismanaged state finances.
I live in Bourbonnais and ride in the park almost every day. I have had an excellent opportunity to observe the deterioration that has been going on for the past several years.
Fun time all the time never a disappointment time Awesome 100% dont forget to Go Fishing 🐟 or just a hike. O dont for get to take your skate bord if you got one cross the green bridge and try going down the hills its fun time. Barbeque there is a must. By the park. Restroom 🚻 there. Its a fun time must try. Lot of thing to do . by your self and your pet or with family.
Beautiful State park just 45 minutes from the southwest suburbs.
Hunting, fishing, and hiking are all available! 4,500 acres! Pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, archery deer, spring turkey and fur bearer seasons. Rock Creek is stocked with trout for both fall and spring seasons. 10.5 mile half-paved / limestone bike path. Fantastic smallmouth bass fishing available. Hiking trails in Area A and Rock Creek Canyon. Hand trap range and archery range within the park.
Very peaceful and pretty
It's great just needs a little more care from people there's trash can's use them
I love at, the camp grounds is awesome, walking, jogging, riding your bike. Good fishing. Love this place.
Last time I was there 30 years ago the place was a dump. We went there a couple of weeks ago and had a good time, the Park is clean and a nice place to go. We will visit again, make sure to see the suspension bridge it's pretty cool.
Beautiful place for a hike, great camping, and a lot of lush scenery near the river.
Nice day, good paved trails
Amazing place! Lots to do and the park is clean! Would love to spend more time in here and enjoy nature! ❤️
This is our favorite biking area. From the bridge parking lot it's 6.5 miles to the north parking lot giving us 13 miles of biking. The trail is paved, but often there's a lot of leaves and twigs on the trail, especially in the fall and spring. You see the Kankakee river occasionally from the trail. And if the river is very high, the trail may be blocked. If it were closer to our house, we'd go there more often.
Lots of solitudes in the winter, but the trails are not maintained and the facilities are unstaffed in this season.
Wonderful place to forage for seasonal mushrooms spring and fall.
Family and members have been picnicking and camping there over 90 years. State closed Wagner campsite along the river due to lack of lawn mowers. We now camp at the KOA South of Kankakee. Kankakee State Park campsites do not allow alcohol or beer at your campsite. Ranger stalked in the woods came up and gave 114 people a $100 fine each for having beer in their coolers. Strangely enough, it'd have to be paid right now in the dark in cash no receipt.
Very nice view near the river. Otherwise the main path is quite nice too. But I noticed it could use some more bathrooms.
They have areas for picnics or lunch. You can walk right up to the water front in many spots to fish or just sight see.
Many trails to explore
Love it!!!
January 2022 and a 43° day. Perfect for a walk along the Kankakee River. It was a beautiful day!
Long, paved walking trails with views of the river. Expanses of grass to lay down on a blanket and stare up at the clouds and sky and take in nature. Plenty of picnic tables too. A gem for sure. Get up, go outside!
This was the place! Many memories here playing at Rock Creek, catching crey fish to bring home to the turtle, jumping off the cliffs at the waterfall, grilling out and just plain old enjoying a simple life... 20 plus years later I'm reliving them days with the grandkids.... #blessed
Good walking trails, plenty of parking, pretty well-maintained. Great park to visit for a day of hiking, walking trails, or even hanging out by the river.
I love this place. why spend money on a vacation when you have kankakee state park and hour away. It doesn't get better than this . Great fishing, great scenery. Nature at its best.
Great place for a walk. People are slobs, so it is not a pristine place. A few nice parks for the kids. The suspension bridge is pretty cool.
Great state park right in my back yard !!! I know people that have lived in the area for years and haven't been out here ..... its a great place to get outdoors and get some fresh air !!!
The park facilities are pretty outdated. It's the bike/walking trail that shines. Take note though there are no water fountains at all so bring your own.
Very relaxing place to get away from it all. Short trip from the city makes this place a great place for a day trip.
Always a pleasure. As long as the humans keep it clean when they enjoy it! Love taking the kids out to the State Park.
Beautiful environment next to the Kankakee river. Lovely trails line the river and plenty of shells and muscles can be found on the shore line. Nature undisturbed and at its finest. Bathrooms and facitities are located throughout.
A great place to go for a picnic lunch and a gentle, paved trail along the scenic Kankakee River
Great place to get out with the family and walk the trails and take in and enjoy nature. Absolutely gorgeous scenery
Great park with tons of amenities, beautiful greenspaces, camping is available in the area as well
What a state park should be. Varied and numerous spots to fish, a park for the kids, scenic trails, and ample facilities. I really cannot say anything bad about the park and surrounding area.
Cute bike path following the river. Limited hiking along that route. Other routes might exist, but were not obviously marked.
Along with camping and picnicking there is a very nice paved walking, running, cycling path along the river.
We always go to rock creek ive been going to this spot since I was a young teen and ive been bringing my kids since they were babies and it was actually the first place I brought my husband the day we met it is my favorite place to go in kankakee county
Clean family fun environment take my two dogs and 3 kids my wife and myself and the kids have a blast so do we.if you go be sure to go to visit the suspension bridge and there is a rope swing tied to a strong support tree on the main island in the river there will me a beach then walk through the woods then swing then you csn climb back up and have more fun
Beautiful Park by the river. Couldn't find the morels we were looking for, but we did find a bison preserve nearby AND saw a bald eagle. Pretty slick nature experience
Beautiful, well maintained park. Not a lot of people out today, & the river is running strong.
Campgrounds were nice and well kept. Friendly people and pretty trails.
This park is beautiful but i can not give it 5 stars because whoever runs this park holds it back by restricting venders and they close the camping areas for weeks on end without no reason and park staff hide or avoid you so in other words its very poorly managed hopfully this changes
Very friendly staff. Clean park.lovely shaded sites. Came to Illinois from Florida to visit family looking for a place to sleep.Pleasantly suprised to have a very nice time
They've lost a few amenities over the years but it's still a good place to stop for the day, lots of shaded areas, and of course you can always drop a line in the river. Never know what you might catch!
Nice place for a short hike, spent 2 hours here and didn't even walk the full trail.
It's my favorite place in the world, I've been going here since I was 5 years old
Great place to take your partner, dog, family for a walk, bike ride, picnic, or just watch the river go by. Unfortunately because of the state budget the campgrounds are still closed.
Great walking trails and a wonderful place to take family photos
Bicycle trail is outstanding,9 miles one way along scenic river very challenging unless you're in good physical shape.
A beautiful gem of a State Park on the Kankakee River.
Sites are roomy, electrical on site water avail, river is beautiful
This is truly an awesome place if you walk the full Trail you'll get to see some wildlife and it isn't very nice walk or bike ride
My dog loves it here. We hike the side of the river and fish. We chase squirells and rabitts together.
Oh yeah......the wife and kids enjoy it too
Nice place for picnics with river alongside. 10 mile path through park for running and biking. Some restrooms. Very limited water fountains.
I enjoyed sitting on the big rock, my feet in the flowing water. The kids & our dog Axle enjoyed being there. Lots of fun!
One of the best state parks. It's beautiful, has great trails, and is immaculately maintained.
So much to do with all age groups
Perfect place to go for a walk in the trails. great scenery right along the river
Beautiful park. It wasn't crowded when we went and looked like a good place to walk the dogs or fish.
Wonderful place for biking, picnics, and camping, if it were still offered. Lovely trails and places to look at the Kankakee River! Highly recommend
When the river is low it's great fishing I find my own bait out there called hellgrammite best babe ever used on Kankakee River State Park
Tranquil and relaxing area just to look at nature and unwind. There was someone out fishing and enjoying the last few days of wonderful weather.
Great walking. Clean and the sights are just breath taking! Very relaxful😄 …
So much to do here. I love the trails and walking alongside the river. Beautiful scenery and always a phenomenal experience.
Great place to spend the day outside. TONS of things to do! Great for biking, walking and jogging! Even spending some time in rock creek!
Very nicely maintained parks. Great river access.
Very nice park. Large with Kankakee river flowing through. Peaceful and serene. Plenty of picnic spots and shelters for groups.
Well taken of park...even has toilet paper in the stalls
Good place to just sit by the river and watch it float by, eases tensions and nice to relax there.

Great bike trails along the river. Nice accesses to the river.

Nice place for walking. Probably also good for fishing, haven't tried yet.
Pretty park along the river - amazing walking/bike paths - nice little stops along the way. Highly recommended.

Always a bit busy but there are so many great views here, it’s worth it. Love to get off the beaten track here.
Nice park. I wish it had drinking fountains for dogs. The park is well maintained with nice views and paths.
We rode the path end to end. Very nice interesting path. Fun to ride with some really great views.
Nice quiet place!! The sites are good and separate. The water situation is less than desired.
Beautiful spot if you're a outside person easy trails and meduim trails loved it

Beautiful. Peaceful. I spent the late morning here with a meditation group and the park was the perfect spot for relaxing.
Great for fishing and relaxing with the family
Great place, great energy. If our state could pass a budget, they could reopen the campgrounds (3 years).
Some litter on the river. Nice pavilions to eat at. Beautiful sceenery. Fun to hunt for clam shells and rocks.
Great place to take a walk and reconnect with nature.
Had a great time walked a lot and took pictures. Of the river. One of my favorite. Places

Well maintained park with bike trails and river access.
Beautiful and serene this time of year with light snow cover and the sound of rushing water from the Kankakee River and Rock Creek
I really enjoy going to the Park, throwing water balloons off the bridge at unsuspecting hikers is always a treat......😎 …

Great trails and overall beautiful park. Always a nice place to visit!
Just a beautiful place to visit. Great bike path, beautiful view of the river and beautiful old Oak and nut trees.
Nice trails, beautiful and peaceful.
Great place to take my new puppy. They need to reopen the camp ground. It's been too damn long.
We have always enjoyed Kankakee River State Park! Visiting from out of town today brought back a lot of wonderful memories!
Clean and well maintained. Good paved trails and lookouts. The people are ok depends on who showes up.
It is sad how different is places from what it was when I was young. Hardly used, no money to keep it up appropriately. The days of enjoying a day at the State Park are long gone
Beautiful place, lots of walking paths, very quiet and peaceful.
Always a fun outing here. Even with the soggy ground from three rain and over flowing river.
Very nice park. Clean and beautiful. Signage is horrible and people go where they should not be.
Not as large as I would have hoped, but filled with some great trails and beautiful bluffs/riverfronts. Nice find south of Chicago!
Really nice view of the river, got to pet a cat that I guess wanders the park over there. She is a sweet little white cat.

Lovely natural place a lot of trees and river side walks. Only one hour away from Chicago

The running path is awesome and has different elevation changes that make the route challenging.

This river is relaxing I rode a boat and it was good
Great place for outdoor activity & very nice trail
Great place! Dogs love being able to go in the water for a splash!
I can't blame those who worked there to much as I think this was partly budget cuts and top Managment issues but we had 275 people for 2 bathroom stalls and on top of it the grass was 2 feet tall throughout the site.
Beautiful park grounds, play areas for children and wonderful walking paths.
Always so peaceful and relaxing...gotta love Mother Nature.
Had a blast walking down thw nature trail! Perfect for fall time!
Always an adventure here. Getting off of the trails and into the forest is always a different and interesting experience.
