Reviews of Blue Hills Reservation
Colin McGibbon
This place is always amazing, no matter the season, but fall is especially beautiful. The colors and paths are transformed due to the changing season. The sunset during fall is awesome. Be careful with the less travelled paths during the fall season - these will be covered with leaves so it's not as easy to know where you are. The major trails are marked and provide enough places for quiet exploration. This is a place I enjoy visiting all year, even in the thick of winter. A park for all seasons.

TERRIFIC trails and views. Look forward to returning!
Enjoyed the challenge of the well marked Skyline Trail. The view of Boston from the Observation Tower was great but loved the other views as well. Fall colors will likely be peak in another week or two. Recommend hiking shoes for this trail. There are rocky parts that absolutely require good traction and scrambling.
Also walked the very easy 1.1 mile loop around Houghton's Pond. Fabulous fall day - people were sunbathing on the beach, picnicking at some of the many picnic spots, fishing, and generally enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Only thing for Houghton's pond is that one never truly escapes the sounds of nearby Interstate 93 - though it kind of becomes white noise.
An added plus for me is having family in both Providence and Boston - this is a terrific location to meet halfway!
Sara Ansari
Hiking the Skyline north and south trails are not for the faint of heart - some parts of them you’re legit rock climbing up or downhill. Took me 2 hours to do 5 miles but it’s all worth it for the panoramic views when you get up top.
Some advice:
1. screenshot a pic of the hiking map bc they have #’d posts so you know where you are.
2. Blue paint marks on the off-trail trees will direct where you’re going
3. Use google maps on your phone so you know where you are!
4. Parking is ample and free but go earlier in the day since it gets darker sooner now. Park is closed sunset to sunrise.
Jeffrey Mensah
Moderate hike for a good work out. for the views not bad guess from the trails I took. Will try other trails. Was refreshing seeing city of Boston from the tower. Also ongoing construction at the weather observatory hence it was closed(guess I missed out or visited at the wrong time lol). Overall It was definitely a good work out.

The Blue Hills Reservation is a fantastic location for sightseeing, hiking, and picnicking. The trails are lovely and just difficult enough to provide a good workout. The stone lookout tower offers breathtaking views to the devoted hiker, and on a clear day, Boston is clearly visible in the distance. America's oldest continuously operating weather observatory is also located here, and it is once again welcoming small groups of visitors. Pets on leashes are welcome, but please pick up after them. Any level of hiker would benefit from visiting the Blue Hills because of the area's natural beauty. Fantastic views could be seen from the Eliot Tower during the hike to the Great Blue Hill.
Amazing scenery and breathtaking vistas make the long hikes and treks worthwhile. Simply being here makes you feel more alive. Public transportation is nearby and available, but a Lyft or Uber arrives in under 20 minutes. Nearby are a Burger King and a Dunkin'. A quick tip to avoid getting lost in the woods is to follow the trails and tree numbers. Keep a map close at hand if not. If you need a break from your typical city life and routine, come here.
Helen Lindsay
We took skyline trail east from houghton pond. It was a tougher climb. We went out and back a ways and really enjoyed it. The path does narrow at a few points. Would recommend sturdy shoes.
Parking is very full and tricky to figure out where to park for which trail so make sure to look ahead of time.
Aishwarya Shah
Amazing landscapes and beautiful views that are all worth it after a long walk and trekking. Safe for kids and bringing your dogs for a walk. Being here just makes you feel alive again. Near to the city and is accessible via public transportation but a Lyft or Uber takes less than 20 mins. Burger place and Dunkin' nearby. Wheelchair accessible parking available. Also, a quick tip to follow the trails and tree numbers to not get lost in the woods. Or else, keep a map handy. This is the place to be if you need some break in your regular city life and routine.
Vanessa Fagundo
So many trail options, it’s never crowded and very beautiful in the fall.
Celdra M Allen
Great place for hiking, only 20 minutes from Boston. DCF offers guided and self guided hikes. The trails are well marked and the senary in beautiful!
Steffen Ghelfi
Great trails and a ton of things to do
Stop by the trail side museum to see a some interesting animals and birds
Alec Stepanian
Very beautiful hiking spot with lots of different options for intensity. Good option for older people as there are fairly flat trails that are more like vigorous walks. And if you like to climb, you can choose those trails too! Scenic in the fall and sufficient parking.
Aaron Averhart
The Blue Hills Reservation is a wonderful place to visit, hike and picnic! The trails are beautiful and just challenging enough to be a good work out. The diligent hiker is rewarded with stunning views from the stone lookout tower, and on a clear day Boston can easily be seen in the distance. This place is also home to Americas oldest continuously operating weather observatory, which is back to hosting small groups of visitors. Leashed animals are welcome, just remember to clean up after them. Over 5 years since my last visit, it was extremely nice to be hiking there again. While the visitor center is still closed because of the pandemic, the trails are yours for the hiking. I would recommend the Blue Hills for any level of hiker, as the sheer beauty of the place makes it worthwhile!
rahul godara
Awesome multiple trails with a lot of scenic views. Has also got a beach area along pond. Parking can be tough during nice weather weekends and holidays. Has an ice cream snack area. In 2021, the welcome building was open only until 3 PM but the park is open until 8 pm.
Alec McDaniel
Great hike. Predominantly flat dirt path. Some small hills with rocky terrain but not difficult for any level hiker. Bring water. Didn't see any restroom facilities during our hike.
Many dogs off leash
Brenda maguy Washington
Great trail, awesome views, kids friendly
Priyanka Desai
Beautiful hiking place. Best time would be summer and fall, so that one can enjoy weather and colors of nature. I recently happen to visit around end of fall but still it was beautiful.
Tina McVeigh
Lots of great trails for all levels of hikers. There are ski trails too. Trails are well marked. Be sure to download a map- I was glad I did as it allowed us to take a shortcut knowing our way
DAVID BRYANT
Very nice place for a walk. We walked around houghton's pond today. It was warm and sunny, and people were enjoying the trails as well as the beach. They were even some swimmers in the water! We were pleasantly surprised to find that there were porta potties and bathrooms available, too.
Matthew Goodchild
Good time. Brought my 3 year old but not recommended at night almost got got lost on the back in the dark. But I don't regret. The way we went was rocky not stroller friendly and hope your fit. Lol
A
Lots of trails, so you could hike for a mile or make it an all day affair meandering through the different trails. Trails up the hill can get rocky at times, so hiking boots help but aren't necessary. Plenty of parking at the lot along Hillside Street at Houghton's Pond. Great view of Boston from the Blue Hill observatory.
Vivian Caraballo
This place was so cool, a small easy hike. There’s 3 parking lots for the many trails at Blue Hill. It’s kid and dog friendly, has bike trails as well and wasn’t hard to find. Very crowded though since it’s right outside the city...
Vinny Kashiv
This is a hidden gem for trekking lovers specially in fall. It’s a great place if you want some exercise and/or alone time. You can find plenty of parking by the roads and designated parking areas. I
Filip Galiza
I’m only reviewing the Skyline loop trail which is a 10.5 mile hiking loop. This is a very nice and enjoyable loop with a few small points of interest. It does take a chunk of time to complete this and there are MANY smaller paths within this forest which makes it more difficult to stay on the main path. You will wonder off a few times and have to backtrack.
Overall a very enjoyable hike and you will definitely earn a nice meal after you’re done with this.
Heidi Flyingmartini Hurricane
Nice short trails for a quick hike. With Covid going on the bathrooms by the Museum are closed and the one at the observation center are open. I want to map it out for longer hikes.
Michael Richard
Our trip here was overall good.. The reservation offered beautiful views, clear paths, painted path markers, leisurely walks, challenging paths, dog friendly environments, bathrooms, a park for children, seasonal swimming, and ample parking. My biggest gripe, and this is simply personal preference, is that it was very crowded at times (although that may be due to us going on the first day of spring). The reservation featured beaches with lifeguards for swimming, roads for cars and horses, beautiful trees, and wildlife galore. I imagine later in the season the bugs might be an issue but I didn't have any problem, nor did my company. Trash was available on the general areas and the paths were dotted with signs to indicate intersections of major trails. Signs on trees occasionally indicate the length remaining on your current trail. The most difficult trails are steep, covered with loose gravel and bare roots, and lack one clear path offering the hiker options to navigate. The harder paths are not good for inexperienced hikers, out of shape persons, or youth. This site would be a great place for nature watchers, bird watchers, mushroom/fungi observers, horticulture hobbyists, etc. to visit if they haven't already.
zalman friedman
Incredible place. Peaceful and quite and full of friendly faces (and dogs). Great place for a leisurely stroll around the pond or more intense hikes through the reservation for more experienced hikers. Highly recommend for a single or family outing.
Jackie
Great hill. Recommend downloading the all trails app and using it to do the trail. Watch out for blazes as you can go off course. A bit Rocky but good for dogs. Saw lots of little kids there as well
Antonio Duarte III
For a majestic view of wonderous creation and a good workout, or just a walk with the family while communing with nature this is the place you want to be. The observatory also offers other options as well as a gift shop with plenty of items for memorabilia of your venture of the Blue Hills, or stop by the Trailside Museum and the animal habitats which house some the indigenous wildlife of the mountainous area. Great looking, and learning possibilities waiting to be discovered and seen.
Carmelo Scuderi
Absolutely beautiful scenery, with tons of different trails, little streams, ponds, and several spots with amazing views. I've been told it's a great place to ride a bike or go for a hike, but it's a great spot to just walk and enjoy everything that's part of the reservation.
Hrushikesh Vasista
A nice place to get a winter hike experience (early March). Had a foot deep of snow, the trails were not cleared off snow. We took the Skyline trail from the state police bldg which was quite demanding, very steep climbs and descents but were rewarded with a nice view of downtown Boston at the tower. At times it was easier to just sit down and slide rather than climb down. There is plenty of parking spaces around. Also visited the weather observatory, and took a quick tour. You get really nice panoramic view from there as well.
Roshni Biswas
Great place for a hike! The trails are very clearly marked, be sure to grab a map on your way up. There's a watch tower at the top with a neat view and picnic spot too.
Abdelrahman Omran
Very peaceful and beautiful place. For someone who lives in the city, it felt amazing to connect back with mother nature, and disconnect from the digital world. Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that's very important for good health.
Stephen Harte
So many great trails to check out here. You just have to come back multiple times. If you are looking to get away from the crowds, Ponkapoag Pond is the place to go. It's not heavily-visited and the 4-mile Green Dot trail is a fairly flat, easy walk or run. But for variety, you should head out on the side trails that run along the eastern side of the pond. Maybe you'll be able to spot one of the eastern milk snakes warming up in the sun.
Fresan CK
What a great hike! Would consider this a level medium-advantage hike. Came across different hikers (from all age group) with their backpacks, some preparing for the White Mountains, NH! Went on a light shower afternoon and followed the blue mark trail path (moderate level). Went up all the way the top where there was a tower, so cool. I also noticed a lot of hikers with their dogs. I thought that this place was cool because right below, across the parking area there was a state troopers building, so I felt somewhat safe. They got a restroom that was available by the main building before going up for the hike! Very convenient~ Overall me and my husband loved the hike and plan to come again! Would recommend to friends and family. Oh and this hike definitely works your legs muscles~ you'll be feeling the soreness the night after the hike lol
Kane DiMasso-Scott
A great place to hike 25 minutes out of the city; there are trails for cyclists, runners, walkers, and it's dog friendly.
It is very hilly though, so expect to be going up and down a lot of 300-500ft hills on the lighter side.
The highest is about 1,200, and steep.
These photos are from the skyline trail, Boston view from Buck Hill.
Chris
Always a great time hiking Blue Hills. The other hikers/pedestrians are very friendly and courteous during these uncertain times of the pandemic. A majority wear masks. There's an app with GPS to assist you with trails if you get lost and ample maps and labels throughout. The trails are well-maintained. The tower at the top provides a great view of the Boston skyline. Can sit on the chairlift at the ski resort and watch the sunset!
George Eglesfield
Great hiking area. We walked the entire length on the skyline trail. Highly recommend. Need good footwear and plenty of water/food. Took us just under 4 hours
Alexandra Greenberg
Absolutely beautiful even on an overcast day. We followed recs online and grabbed a map and suggested hike list from the headquarters which helped a lot and saved us from getting lost! The weather station was very interesting, educational, and a great midway stop.
Brian Belliveau
A great, local, and easily accessible outdoor recreation area. Lots of hiking trails of varying difficulties and terrains.
Jennifer Lindsey
Perfect for hikes in the Fall, spring & Summer! Beautiful spot for photography. Its open to the public!
Charles Denny
Very nice. Beautiful day. A lot of people, but not crowded once you get into the trails.
Jenna DeFosse
Great hiking so close to Boston! The hills really do offer some nice views of the Boston skyline. Be prepared to be going up and down as you traverse the five hills. Would recommend hiking shoes/boots since some hills require scrambling over rocks. Definitely a place for the whole family and dogs!
Kathy Matos Baiona
Awesome for the whole family and pet friendly. You can walk along the trails fish, swim and have a picnic as well.its know cost except bringing your water and lunch.great place.
Martin Gajdošík
The hike to the Great Blue Hill was great with amazing views from the Eliot Tower. I recommend visiting the Blue Hills Trailside Museum with small but well kept ZOO.
Virginia Cutler
Great place to hike. There is more trail variety than you'd expect. You can pick a nice easy trail or something that will get your heart rate up a bit.
Eric Vasallo
Nice hike- steep incline -paved all the way up - great butt workout- about 25 minutes to top. Plenty of free parking below and amazing view above of entire city of Boston. On a clear day you can see the ocean. Reminds me of Runyon canyon in Los Angeles.
Dayan Siri
Nice hiking/ walking place. Make sure you download the trail map from the park website before go in there. There is picture of trails map on public areas. Alltrail and google map not working well. Trails marked with colored dots on trees. Restrooms we're clean.
B
Beautiful place for a hike... Very secluded for the majority.. Parking was almost full and hardly saw anyone on the trails.. My girl and I had a blast quite romantic..
RS
Good place to do trekking with friends and family. We followed the blue line from Braintree to Milton lake pond it was a awesome journey and good workout. Pathway was clear and neat.
Mary LaCivita
We love to hike here. There are a wide variety of trails from easy and strolling to a bit of a light climb over rocks. Nothing intense. All trails are well maintained and well marked. It's full of hikers in any weather but such a big place that it doesn't feel crowded. Parking is a challenge on weekends but there is a lot of parking so when it's crowded it just means a bit longer walk to the trails.
Kenneth “Red Beard” Roth
An amazing hike. Skyline trail was a challenge worth the effort and time.
Michael Aschinger
This wasn't what I was thinking I would encounter near Boston. A very beautiful conservation area with some relatively challenging hikes and worthy views. When I visit again I'll make sure to make this a part of my visit. Beautiful place.
Louis Ebarb
Great walking trails created for different levels from easy around the pond to steeper up the gill.
Natalia Rezende
Definitely dress to stay warm if you're hiking in the fall-spring. Lots of different trails for everyone to enjoy. Lots of dogs around which makes it fun. There a towers you get climb up and see Boston.
Eleanor Levy
always fun to trek through no matter how many times you go. usually just go wherever I feel like and don't stick to a mapped loop or anything. you'll make your way back to your car eventually anyway!
Ye Huang
Great hiking location near Boston! Multiple trails to choose from, some are tough with all rocks, some are casual walks!
Great for family and weekend leisure!
Alejandro Rodríguez
Really nice park to take some fresh air and disconnect from the city. There are several trails to hike with different levels
inbal solomon
Great maps, trails very clearly marked. In the visitor center the lady was very helpful and kind. We chose the north - south skyline trail and though it was hard at times (and easy at others) it was worth it to get to Eliot tower and seeing that view.
Chantel Foley
Best place to hike on the South Shore. Trails are clearly marked and easy to navigate. Great views of Boston if you can make it up to Tower Hill.
carol heap
The trails were slippery a couple of weeks ago so I took the road to the weather observatory. Last weekend I was able to hike the trails. I like that I have the option of both and that some trails are meandering while others are steep. I area is large enough that even when the parking lot lots full, it has never felt crowded while I'm exploring.
Pablo Paxtor
Was such a beautiful and peaceful hike! There were a huge variety of paths you could take so that each hike feels like a completely different experience. Not to mention, it was extremely clean because i saw little to no garbage on the trails when I was there. Overall, a very nice place to hike in and one that I will definitely be visiting again soon!
Therese Marcel
It awesome to have a place to hike right outside of boston. Plenty of parking at different trail heads. It is very busy though. And be prepared for rocks and boulders
Ken Griffin
Just a beautiful place to walk and hike... Arrive early and please pack out any waste you or your dog generate...
Elberte Staco
The trails were nice. Not too difficult. Sunset was beautiful. 10/10
Johanna Hughes
I've been walking here for a few months.there are some great trails and Dan the warden is really helpful.
Carolyn Murphy
Awesome day out with the hubby! Been waiting for decent day for months now! I hid some rocks along my way! Good luck@!✌❤
Nicole Smith
Lovely area to spend the morning! We did the red dot tail to Eliot's Tower then on to the weather observatory.
Runners, dog walkers, bikers, hikers, parents with children - all will enjoy the trails around here.
There are restrooms available and two parking lots.
William Toll
Surprisingly great hike with the bonus of a weather museum at the top. We had a great afternoon here.
Abhirup Dutta
One of the best neighborhood parks in the greater Boston area! The place has everything from hiking trails to ponds and beaches to small museums. You can find hiking trails of all difficulty levels. The trails mostly seem to be very well marked. Hiking aside, the Houghton pond beach is a very nice place to just sit back and relax. The place does get a little crowded over the weekends. If you go on the hiking trail around the pond you will end up finding multiple private viewing areas for the pond.
Rohit Shah
Great place to trail run and hike. Beautiful views.
Jeanie Pearson
Nice area to walk/hike. Similar to the Middlesex Fells. Enjoyed the walk up the red dot trail from Houghton's Pond to Buck Hill. Many people in the pond area not practicing social distancing or wearing masks. Once on the trail most people were wearing masks and overall there's more space.
Dethcloud
Awesome hike. Different paths with varying difficulties. The observatory at the top features a shop full of interesting science projects as well as educational tours
Jennifer McBride
Had a good time even during this time of covid 19 we got some sun and enjoyed our hike! Altho I wish there was more parking and bathrooms for kids we still had fun
Michael Furmaniuk
Great place for a hike! Lots of variety for trails and a great view from the top. Nice to do even when hiking at night.
Mohamed Badaoui Najjar
Beautiful lake and trails right outside Boston. The scenery is really beautiful. You can hike, go for a swim and grill. Definitely a must visit!
Pierce Liefeld
Crowded on the weekends, especially on the trail up to Eliot Observation Tower—the halfway point for the Skyline Loop (pack a lunch and pause to eat it here!). After that, crowds begin to thin out. Follow the blue trail markers to take the Skyline Loop South for an additional ~2 miles of light scrambling. It's certainly more involved than a walk in the woods, but accessible to anyone who's relatively fit.
Tainã Avozani
Great trails, good map and marks, this was the first time I saw a snake on a small side trail.
Misty Bowden
Just pay attention to the trails
Different levels of intensity. We just charged up the first path and regretted it later
Bit a beautiful hike with spectacular views!!
april manupelli
Ponkapoag trail was so nice easy terrain. The floating trail was interesting to walk and peaceful
M H T
Its a great place for outdoor recreation but it gets crowded with a mix of rude and friendly tourists/locals.
Zachariah Lewis
Great hiking! I went to the lookout spot made out of stone and it had a great view. They also have some animals at the welcome area, a zoo. Otters, bald eagles, deer and Foxes. I'll definitely be going back.
JP
Great escape from the outside world.
Dorian Yablin
Something for everyone! Great system of trails with both easy and difficult options. Great for families, dogs, etc!
Bev Cartwright
Pleasant huge park with woods and ponds. Cycle routes plus hiking available. Beach area and good toilets.
Jim Courville
Skyline trail will give you a serious workout. It's not a trail for walking your dog, or an easy or even moderate hike. It's it tough footing, steep climbs, exposed granite. But! Best spot to get serious elevation near Boston. The trail can be run.
There are other trails here that offer peaceful idyllic experiences, those are not he skyline trails, Blue blazes
Jegan Mohan
Pretty cool trails. Easy to moderate climb. Great views on summit
Christine Da Silva
Endless beautiful trails here. Varied terrain. It's a gem.
Crystal Mchugh
Nice hike up to watch the sunset however coming down we got a little lost. It was dark/trail could be better marked.
John D
Awesome trail with awesome views. It’s a hill, but the hike is strenuous as it is all boulders. If you plan to go on a Saturday leave very early. Absolutely zero parking at 11 a.m. My mistake.
Hua Du
Beautiful hiking place for family and kids. Easy and peaceful.
Yariely R
This place is amazing there are so many different trails depending were you want to go and on top there is this cabin/house thing (not sure) were you can sit and take a break there is also a gift shop across the "cabin" were you can get souvenirs there a little on the expensive side but it's worth it if your thirsty because they do have many drinks and they have a bathroom overall it was good for my first time
Alyssa Molina
We did Blue Hill (North). It was a pretty quick hike with parts that are just a bit steep. It was a lot of fun and had some great views. There are a lot of options for hiking/walking in the area!
Manoj
The trails are clearly marked so you won't need to spend 3$ for maps if you know which trail to go for.. I chose blue one which is expected to have medium difficulty however since the weather is moisture it is easy today morning.. No wild animals to fear about.. My experience is very good and i might come back again to try a different trail.. This is my second hiking in Boston..
Sirio Jansen
Beautiful park with wonderful options for hiking. Great for kids, dogs, retreats, you name it! Although not necessary because of all the trial markings and the occasional map on the trail I would recommend bringing either a digital or hard copy version of the map. If you bring your phone for the map make sure it is downloaded as reception can be spotty.
Stacey Schwartz
Furnace brook waterway with tons of lillie pads, cat tails, dragonflies and bees. Beautiful estuary at the entrance to Blue Hills Park.
Naruto Cruz
I actually taught i knew must of this place, iam wrong again. I found not only new trails but new what i like to call the chill spots, because its so nice you just have to chill there. once again blue hills is the place to relax and see beautiful sights love it ps working on a marathon race so only took one pic today
Cameron Beck
The Blue Hills Reservation is easily accessible from I-93 and Rt 138. The name Massachusetts is an Algonquin Indian name which means "In the Place of the Great Hill." That would be Great Blue Hill, a center piece of this reservation.
Rob Bradley
It's an excellent place to go hiking. It's very peaceful.
Adrianne Rodrigues
Beautiful hicking, they have a variety of trails for all different types of hickers easy medium and difficult the easy trails were perfect foe my young children
Gigi Bly
The Blue Hills Reservation always offers a great outdoors experience. Great walking trails and picnic areas. Plenty of grassy areas for sports and recreational activities. Perfect place to view weather activity but always use precautions and take shelter if severe. If your luck, you can enjoy amazing wild animal sightings (again, use precaution and KEEP YOUR DISTANCE), and memorable encounters with park rangers on horseback. Enjoy!
John Nicol
Beautiful trails with magnificent view of Boston and the islands to the north. Lots of choice from non-strenuous to somewhat more challenge hikes.
Cecile Braun-Jones
Close to Biston, the blue hills offer a nice repreive from the city. The area has many hiking trails from.easy to challenging that take you through wooded hills or open crests w beautiful views of the area including Boston skyline. Houghton Pond has a beach, playground and amenities. You will also find a mature museum close to the ski area.
Watsachusetts
Boston created the first regional park system in the United States, of which the Blue Hills are still the largest portion and capstone. Only 10 miles from the downtown of New England's biggest city, the hills themselves are on the National Register of Historic Places. It's here from which the anglicized, Algonquin name "Massachusetts" derives!
The Blue Hills are now an excellent place to take a break from the bustle and reconnect with life whether you're visiting or living in the area, and you can even access them via public transit. There are several attractions within the reservation including a museum, the oldest continuously operating weather station in the United States, and vistas of the Boston Skyline.
With over 100 miles of official trails ranging in difficulty, it's easy to find a hike that works for you from the contoured Mass Audubon and DCR map. The highest point in the entire reservation is 635 ft, so don't concern too much if you're not an avid hiker. Even the most difficult trails are over before you know it, and you'll still feel accomplished!
Tim O'Neill
Beautiful views, so many trails of different levels, very clear map (bring $3), well maintained trails. Eliot Tower is a gem.
Ice Room Videos
I love the Blue Hills. Though it can be a very short hike, the view from the top is nothing short of breathtaking. Being able to see Boston from the stone tower is a view that many people should have the opportunity to see. The trails can also get quite steep which can be a fun experience to traverse but also has gentler ways of climbing and descending.
NomadicVagabond AgedTippler (NVAT)
Always a favorite with great views of the city. Be sure to visit the observatory, high shop and get a tour.
John Galbreath
Fun climb up the rocks and a great view of the city and bay area
Chandrasekar N
Very Good place to have easy to moderate hiking ! Easy access from Quincy.
Vanessa
Nice views. Lots of walking and hiking trails. Huge area. Different views of Boston.
R Q
I felt like I was up north . This place has alot of hidden areas to explore.
Tom Bomb
Many hiking trails, with a great view of Boston from a few areas. Mountain biking, trail running and other activities.
Joe Watkins
Beautiful woods. Nice trails. Pretty easy to walk far enough to get away from the constant him of the roads.
The Mind Expansion Channel
I was at Houghton's Pond and despite the beauty of the reservation, there was trash everywhere. Very depressing. My daughter n I picked up a bunch of it but it was so prevalent, especially juice box straws. Finally we left. I am so disheartened by ppls disregard of this natural treasure.
Felicia Andresen
The Skyline Loop is strenuous, but you have a view over Boston!
Donna Bellew
It was a very nice visit it wasn't too crowded and a beautiful place to sit, relax, and get some sun.
Sudipta Talukdar
Good picnic place for family and friends. Nice arrangements and also good place to spend a day
Juan Navarro
Trails for every level and Houghton's Pond is a treat to walk around. My dogs love swimming there
Alison Kan
Awesome place for hiking or nature walks. I went up one of the trails (started at the Trailside Museum, trail is marked with red dots) with friends and we had a great time. The hike is not too difficult but is a little rocky. It led us to the weather observatory for a nice view. And there are some benches once you get to the top if you need a rest. There are many different trails to explore going up the Great Blue Hill, around the pond, etc., so I would definitely come back and visit.
Travis
Even though it was packed in the parking lots, we had plenty of room on the trails. Awesome view from one of the high points
Brendan B
There are a number of trails to explore here. Parking this time of year can be a bit challenging in the main lot on a warm day. However there is a secondary lot on the left if you are coming from 95, that you can park in prior to the main lot. You can then walk along the sidewalk most of the way to the main lot.
Alternatively, the secondary lot has some really cool hikes up and around a smaller hill. There is a map of the area in the far end of the lot. Worth checking out.
Chris Glazier
Convenient, hard to get lost, accessible to most hikers. Hike for an hour or make a day of it.
Gail Curtis
Beautiful easy trails even for toddlers . Nice playground. Everyone had masks on we encountered.
Sean Muldoon
I have been coming here for years. It is always peaceful and beautiful (especially in the fall).
nn mm
Nice park near high way 93 south exit 3.go there all the time on the weekend
Tabassum Ambia
Very nice place for a hike right by the city. But be prepared to climb steep trails. I need to workout and get back to my old active self so that I don't blank out every few minutes
Hetal Patel
Great hiking trails! Clean and not too difficult depending on the trail you walk.
Mark Alcarez
Good for a hike or an easy family ski trip. Using a snowboard is a little bit difficult when you get off of the Lyft because the slope is very short but it's much easier for people to have skis on. It's really more like for kids. But it's a great place to bring your family and to go for an afternoon
Michael Ferioli
I've been hiking these trails for 10 years and it never gets old.
Elie Nasr
You can see boston!! You cant ask more plus cool mountain bike trails
Ronney Fullard
The trails are phenomenal once you reach the top you can see the entire city
Brooks Payne
Love the Blue Hills, 125 miles of trails through varying terrain in 7,000 acres and so accessible to those in those of us in the eastern part of the state. I hike there a lot, especially the Skyline Trail, and the views from Eliot Tower and the Observatory are incredible! I often go there in remembrance of my son Brian who passed away a little over 5 years ago at age 34. We loved hiking here and taking photos. Sweet memories.
Nicola Pansini
Nice gateway for a hike and be in touch with mother nature after a stressful day at work. Some very nice encounters might happen, which is a plus!
Stephen Allison
Blue Hills is a massive beautiful park filled with every kind of outdoor fun. Go for a walk, ride your bike, or maybe even ski. I've come here my entire life and I am always finding new things to appreciate about it.
Brian Surette
Very well maintained and legitimate variety of terrain. Thr view is excellent and reminds you how close to Boston you really are. No left turns on the main drag is a bit annoying so be prepared to drive a bit to turn around if you park at museum.
Michael Carvalho
Love this place, great place to bring the children and family for a free, peaceful and enjoyable time. So much to do and enjoy with whoever you decide to go with or just yourself!
Joseph C Shaughnessy
I always love coming to the Blue Hills area. The Trails are great and clearly marked and casual hiking for all levels. I always enjoy myself and also great for kids. Great views of downtown Boston and the surrounding area from the top of Big Blue!
juan Carlos
Blue hills is absolutely amazing if you’re looking for an adventure or just a nice trek to enjoy Mother Nature. You should definitely checkout many of the trails that blue hills reservation has too offer just remember hiking isn’t a race just take your time pace yourself and enjoy the scenery..
Paul Rozanski
I grew up in the "Nike Site." Love coming here
MASTEROFKILL 980 GAMING
Me and husband took a walk around the pond.. We had nice time!!
CAITLIN OHARA
Great hike and fantastic views from the top. Good local workout for those south of Boston and they also have a paved uphill course for those taking strollers or preferring that terrain.
Mujahed kazi
Amazing views and nice clean trails
Jasmyne Howard
Hiking here has become one of my greatest pastimes. I've done the quail and red dot trails so far and looking to try out others for more of an adventurous hike. You can also walk along the road if you're not much of a hiker or don't wish to be fully submerged into the woods.
Jim Connors
Close to Boston area features miles of easy to very moderate hiking. Beautiful views from hill tops. Deep forests feel you are far from a city.
Rody Sakr
Great trails and beautiful ponds
vincent w
Great place for a hike. Plenty of well marked trails with a range of difficulty. You can take it easy or do a something a bit more strenuous. The view from the top of Buck hill is nice. Parking is plentiful at Houghton's pond.
Kendra PeloJoaquin
My son and I love to come here to the Trailside Museum and see the animals, and go for a hike on the skyline Trail. He has also come here on school trips with his class.
Melvyn J Purefied
Great place to get away within the city.
Christina Rogers
Blues Blue Hills is nice for very beginner hikers and Walkers there is a moderate to you no more skilled holler hike with some rocky stones and tree roots on the right hand side but it pretty much goes one way and then you have to turn back I wouldn't recommend for advanced to expert hikers and climbers. Also I don't see it possible for dogs to go because the paths are very narrow and I also haven't seen any dogs even on leash. They also have benches in little alike roundabouts throughout the past so just to set the tone of like the type of area that it is. Otherwise nice place and no trash
Andrew Risitano
The Blue Hills Reservation has been one of my favorite places for my whole life. As a kid on field trips, or withy family I loved the hiking trails and going to see the animals at the Trailside Museum. As a teen and a young adult it was a chance to get away from school or work, to see nature and to exercise. As a parent I love seeing my kids enjoy it. A free activity that takes hours of their time and makes them smile is a win.
Yasmin Baldini
I live about 20 minutes from here and some of my favorite winter memories is learning how to ski on Blue Hills Mountain. Now that I'm older, I've discovered hiking during on the mountain during the rest of the seasons. They have great paths with skill level options which is really nice. And the gift of a great view from the top!
Kenzie G
I come here most days to clear my head, and I'm really loving it. There are a variety of trails for all experience levels and, though I occasionally cross paths with another hiker, it's never been too busy while I've been here. There are nice easy walking trails through woods and along the small bodies of water that dot the area, and then there are trails that undulate up and down cascades of slippery, mossy rocks and tree roots. It's also a nice place to come with a dog. Well, not that I have one to bring, but I see lots of people with their furry friends, so I assume it's nice for them as well!
Sadie S
The instructors are great and my kids always have a blast!
Travis Klein
I've only been here once in the summer, but holy cow. I will be back. What beautiful and fantastic hiking! I parked by the trailside museum and took the red trail up to the weather observatory, then sat on a rock overlook for a few hours reading a book. Some of the trails are gnarly enough to be fun on their own, and the views at the top of hills and down the ski slopes are soul-lifting.
Nathaniel Fahy
Great trail system that is very accessible for people in the greater Boston area. Plenty of parking and trail variety. Some trails can be quite rocky and steep so make sure you have proper attire. Great for dogs and has a nice pond for swimming in the summer.
Erika Rockwell
I go here at least once a week and never have to take the same route twice. So much to explore. This hiking area has trails for all expertise, and many beautiful lookouts. Just know that virtually none of the entrances have trash cans, so any garbage you have you'll have to bring out as well. Great place to forget you're in the city for a while.
Matt
This is a great place to relax in nature or bring the family for a nice picnic or walk. However, During summer from 9am till just about close. Most trails will be packed with people. Blue Hills is a go to spot for locals. As most things around them is city life.
Jeremy Dion
If you hike regularly this is the place for you. Trails go from basic to very challenging. Not for the person who is looking for something to do as a hobby. Trail guides are very knowledgeable and helpful. Knowing how to read a map is a big advantage.
Ashley Scalise
Great hiking trails, quiet surroundings! You wouldn't think you were so close to Boston!
Shavik Harindra Gunarathne
I did my first trial run on the skyline trail. It was brutal 😂 but loved it at the end of it. The trail is moderately hard where I had to slow down most of the parts from running to walking/hiking due to the steepness. You get to see the Boston skyline. And the surrounding area. This would be a great trail to begin if you are looking for more challenging terrain in the future.
George Konstas
Great location for an amazing hike!
Just outside of Boston.
Miosoti Espinal Waller
Beautiful park and nice lake. The facilities are very nice. Clean bathrooms and changing areas
James Podolske
Not far from the city yet still able to escape the city and enjoy everything nature has to offer
Godfrey Ainooson
Great place for a hike of varying lengths. There are various paths, so feel free to take the one less traveled. They eventually lead back to one another. Be mindful of the road that leads through it, it's also the midway point. So if you walk the whole thing, remember your car is gonna be quite a long walk back.
Matt Reid
It's a great little area for day hikes with the family. No pressure to go too far nothing too steep for the kids. Safe lots of dogs and family people. Reasonably well marked and you can get a map if you need it.
Julia Zhaglina (RenderTheMoment)
Take some time off. Listen to the nature. Walk around the pond or climb up the hill to experience the breathtaking views
David MacIndoe
Great park to hike in! Not far from the city or other civilization so you really can't get TOO lost. You get variety with anything from short, flat loops around ponds to long, rocky hikes with modest elevation gain and nice views. These don't in any way replace going to the White Mountains, but for a day hike in nature and a break from the daily grind, this is an excellent choice! Trails are mostly well marked and intersections are numbered so you can always see where you are on the map
Natcho Natchev
One of the best hiking areas within driving distance from Boston. Nice trails, well maintained and marked. The area itself is hilly and wooded, but there are some good views from the higher hills.
In the summer the picnic areas get very crowded, but everything is quiet and more pristine as soon as one gets about 1/2 mile on the hiking trails.
Trails range from easy to moderate. Some ascends/descends might be more strenuous, but they are fairly short.
Overall, a good place to spend a day in the nature.
Kat Campbell
great area to hike , many different levels of hiking is offered! the view of Boston is the highlight!
amanda ellis
such a beautiful place! There are many trails to explore and they’re all well marked and all lead you through great foliage. The parking is so-so. On peak days/hours there’s usually a few spots to snag and attendants to help you.
Be careful of bikers.
William Snyder
Very beautiful scenery! Had no trouble finding parking. Traffic leaving was pretty bussy on a Saturday. Very clean trails and the view from the look out tower is amazing! A great get away from the city.
Samantha Minehan
It is super fun for field trips hiking up, skiing and more. This fall, there were so many yellow jackets! We were being swarmed with them whenever we were at the top of the hill, but nobody was stung. Obviously, there will be bugs, but it is also so fun!
Kartik Chanana
Peaceful park, beautiful views and sunset
Tina
Great area to hike. Dog friendly. Lots of parking. Also able to mountain bike here. Many different paths, both rugged and one paved. Saw a bald eagle at the animal/bird exhibit there (small setup) but still nice. There is a bathroom but I'm unsure of the operational hours.
Jonathan Griffiths II
An excellent place to get lost for anywhere from a few minutes to many hours walking, running, and hiking through the forests of MA.
I highly recommend walking up to the top of the Blue Hill and climbing the tower there, or for those less interested in a climb, take a short walk (1mi) around Houghton Pond. The Skyline Trail offers the most rigorous hikes in the park, and any single section offers the ups and downs you would expect from the Green Mountains (or at least their foothills.)
The mountain biking is excellent, and the cross country skiing (the few days of the year we have snow) is fantastic. Go get out there!
Ethan Mead
Beautiful variety of trails with amazing views
Claire Abate
Like hiking? this place is for you. Lower and moderate level. From a walk in the woods to some decent rocky climbs. I strongly suggest hiking footwear. It will make the trails more enjoyable. Off leash dog friendly! Weekends in season can get very busy, go early.
Jaime BlackBird
Skyline Trail is perfect for a quick, after-work hike with my best buddy, Billy 🏆 …
Carlos De Niz
A nice park to hike and bike during the summer. There are 2 defined and nicely traced routes, both well marked (with different paths and shortcuts in between). They are not very long if you bike them (6 and 4 mi), yet a nice place.
Rob Silversmith
We are so lucky to have such a nice place to hike so close to Boston (by car....). Okay, it's not the white mountains, but I can leave home downtown and be here hiking in under 20 minutes, and there are sufficient trails to keep you nicely occupied for several hours. If you take the N. Skyline Trail from Houghton pond to great blue hill, you'll getting to the top of the hill right around when you start to get hungry, and you can have a nice picnic up there. (There are tables.)
Nakul Kadaba
Great area for a hike worth several hours. Collection of easy and difficult hikes. The maps are not particularly accessible or helpful, and some crossings intersect with roads, so it's a bit dangerous. Great sights and hikes all around though.
Mani r
we did hiking at this places, followed red dot trail- enjoyed it. This place also has small pond and plenty of picnic areas. on last summer we spent whole day walking grilling .. with friends.Parking is little tricky has at around spots if you miss the.one at main entrance you can.find place at picnic area-3.
Jenna Sunshine
A beautiful reservation that's very close to the city. There are great hiking paths, some of which are steep and technical and some of which are simple, easy hikes/walks that would be good for kids and people that want to walk outside in the woods but don't want it to be too hard. I highly highly recommend checking this place out!
Fluffy Pop
Beautiful weather and the trails really got my legs going. Was amazing!
Michael Scibelli
I hike here several times a week. I always enjoy my time here. It's what keeps me sane. You see, I'm from the 413, where there is real woods. I have hiked about 90% of the trails here and I like them all. You have trails for all skill levels. Whenever I go I usually plan a loop. I also highly recommend packing a lunch and hiking the whole skyline trail. It's great! The only issue I've had with the blue hills is the amount of trash in the woods around the headquarters. I'm usually the guy to pick up trash I see on the trail anywhere I go but not this trash, this was gross city trash. All in all, I love the blue hills. It's a great spot.
Chris G
They have markings on the trail with numbers and color dots on the trees to avoid getting lost. The nature is well preserved as it should be. Not much hikers maybe because of the pandemic which is a good thing. We saw butterflies, dragonflies, wild blueberries and some ground orchid as well. An indication of its good condition.
Judy Blackiemore
This is a gift to those in the city. Located right up the road from Dorchester, there are paths to walk and explore this beautiful reservation. Lake swimming in Summer. Fishing but no boating is allowed.
Charlie gourlay
Trails are well marked. Great place to spend an afternoon.
Dante h
If you plan on hiking here I would recommend the skyline trail. It is somewhat difficult to traverse but the views are great and it isn't that long of a hike. As for mountain biking I would say Blue Hills is a above average spot to mtb
David Guy
Blue Hills is a great place for hiking and seeing nature. It’s like being in a wilderness yet so close, too. The trails near Great Blue Hill can be a little crowded on a nice weekend, but much of the park is not crowded at all. It’s one of the best parts of Massachusetts.
Allison Driscoll
Very good for fishing. bass every Where
Jonathan Tidman
Massive network of mild trails and 6000 acres of real estate. Great views of Boston . Good winter snowshoe area. A quick exit off 93 on Hillside St Milton. The trails are well maintained and active
There are several trail heads that begin in the six towns touched by this conservation area. Bring water and beware of ticks.
Judy Clavin
Decently flat paved hiking grounds for someone who limped slowly the surroundings after a 3-mile RT hike. Great to be outdoors in the forest and nearby golf course after continuous onslaught of rains days before. There is a horse trail, one can rent horses nearby.
Dee Cee
Offers so many hiking and walking trails, mountain biking, regular biking trails. The views from the top are pretty cool.
The weather tower is pretty neat, they offer tours of it, its technology and they teach you/children about the weather; it's prognostication, how things are measured, reported and how it communicates with weather channels.
There is also an old watch tower and bridges through out.
Houghtons pond is nearby, where families can cool off in the summer and enjoy the wildlife in the fall and winter months. There is a playground, with plenty of seating. And they used to have a snack bar. I don't think it's around anymore.
Blue hills offers many seating options throughout to sit and eat for a large group. We usually sit on a nice (shady if summertime, exposed to the sun in winter) rock/s.
The also have an animal mini zoo. And an otter show included at scheduled times.
I think I've seen them offer birdwatching tours. Can't remember right now.
They offer skiing in the winter and lessons.
So many things! We are grateful to have this available to us.
Ben Rawitz
What a gift to be able to live in the city and 15 later be surrounded by trees in the Blue Hills. The trails are marked very clearly which makes it hard to get lost. It’s the perfect place for a Sunday light hike or for some exercise. All ages and animals. Fun times!
Will Mcclain
Nice quiet place to relax and enjoy some family time. If your in the mood for swimming you can do that, fishing? Ypu can do that too or even just hang out and grill some food or have a picnic. This place is awesome.
Diane Cormier
Would not call it easy, medium. Some parts were kind of difficult to hike
Eric [PARRiS] Wright
It is beautiful- all the wildlife and the growth...to see it now knowing it was part of a landfill is hopeful
albert gonzalez
I came here to ride my bike and ride my bike I did! It's an absolutely beautiful area. So beautiful I didn't even mind the heat and humidity. The trails are awesome and plentiful. I was on a cross bike so there were some difficult spots I had to dismount in order to avoid injury. A mountain bike is ideal.
Patricia Crevecoeur
I love hiking and Blue Hills Reservation is the closest hiking spot for me. I've been there many times, each time I go I am and refreshed, peaceful, and I get a workout each time. I received all of the above out of it which I'm happy about.
Nick Bedrosian
Take a picture of the map with your phone.
A decent hike that's nestled in an area that you wouldn't expect to have such a nature feel to it. You're surrounded by urban views, Quincy and the South Shore mall on one side of you, and the Boston Skyline on the other side of you. The views are good, but you need to get to specific spots to really enjoy them as they is often trees and brush obscuring your view.
If you hike frequently then this isn't anything you can't handle, I would also say it is great for first time hikers, especially if you live nearby and don't want to travel far.
I hiked a good portion of the skyline trail. It can be poorly marked in areas although the intersections are always labeled. Take a picture of the map with your phone and keep an eye out for the intersection numbers as the tree markings can be sparse for first timers in the area.
There a lot of areas to enter and exit the trails and a few streets to cross, so plan accordingly and park in the area that you want to be in as the reservations' trails stretch 9 miles in width, according to the map.
Chris B
A fantastic state park with hiking, a swimming pond and lots else to explore. The trails can be swampy so bring plenty of bug spray.
Lori Patterson
Hiking is my jam. And Blue Hills is, hands down, the best place to hike in the area. You can go anywhere from an easy 1.5 mile hike to a blistering 16 mile hike, depending on how you mix up the trails.
If you've got young kids or teenagers who gripe at being outside, do the trail that starts at the Museum and then loop back around at the "castle" at the top - part of the blue (Skyline) trail. It's an easy 1.5 - 2 mile hike. Keep the younger ones busy (and teach them a thing or two about trail blazes) by looking for the dots and numbers on the trees and rocks.
If you want to push it a bit, do the entire Skyline Trail. If you feel like not being able to walk the next day, do the Skyline Trail one way and then turn back around and go back to where you started.
Bonus - you can refill your water at the Reservation Headquarters. There's a small outdoor water fountain. Not the "best" water but hey, water is water.
Bonus bonus - hike this place in the winter, if you can swing it. The trails are kept amazingly clear and hiking in the snow is incomparable. There's a peace you just can't find in other conditions.
Recap - this place is bomb diggity dot com.
paul lazenby
The Blue Hills are a wonderful place to get away from the hubbub of the city and do some hiking. There are also some amazing Mountain Biking trails. Every trail is well marked and maintained. You can really select your level of difficulty. The longest stretch the I have done is a 6 mile loop. In the Winter there is even a little skiing, both downhill and cross country. Great place and worth a visit.
beautiful britney
Wow right in my own backyard. This place is amazing. I live in Mattapan and it takes me 10 min to get here and park. So many things to do. Welcome center wasn't open on time tho:( so I didn't get to go inside but took my bike around the pond it was great!
itzNono
One of my favorite spots in mass !!! Siper close to boston like you can literally walk or ride ur bike if you really want to !!! So many spots to choose from to hike and/or relax outdoors. You can go here everyday for months and see something new
Casper Overgaard
Went with my family and walked one of the trails up to the observatory at the top. Fantastic trail and scenery all the way up, where the vista is only enhanced by the 360 view from top of the observatory. We took the rooftop guided tour by a charismatic guy who dived deep in weather data, the history and the various scientific instruments and measurements. Recommended
Dewey Johnson
Exceeded my expectations! We mainly hike in the White Mountains. Nice to have this closer to home. Great view of Boston. Nice walking trails with some steep, boulder climbs. Will return soon!
Sean Westgate
Blue Hills reservation is excellent. Especially the small Trailside Museum is a real treat. It's great to hike all the way to the top to see beautiful views of Boston. I would recommend going in the fall so you can see the changing colors. If I lived closer I would go there all the time.
Caleb McKenney
Very extensive reservation land. Exceptional view of Boston on some of the trails. Varying from easy to more advanced the trails can be good for young people as well as adults and avid hikers. Great place for day hikes.
Bridget Howley
Beautiful place to go hiking or a picnic/gathering. Lots of picnic spots and benches plus a large pond with lots of lifeguard stations. Not sure what the rates there are but definitely worth a visit. They have a nice little playground there too
L D
Beautiful, huge forest, great for hiking or just short walks. Free parking, if you are lucky enough to find one. Don't park illegally on the street, you will be towed.
Stephanie Roine
I love it here. There are trails for everyone and wonderful views! I especially love the short trail up to the old fort and observatory. It's great for quick exercise or to bring the kids along. Don't forget to pack a picnic!
Tommy Vo
nice close hiking place in boston. parking can be challenging in the summer, there are often cars just parked on the side of the streets and hoping for the best. not much of a view up top but there's still a decent rest spot.
Mabel Zhang
Skyline trail is quite rocky, lots of tall boulders. The entire trail is basically going up and down, up and down, up and down, etc. Markers are good and frequent, every dozens of feet, because you can easily get lost - if you don't see markers in 50 meters, you're definitely on the wrong path. Go on a day you're in a good mood and won't get sick of keep going up and down just to stay on the same plane. Go early in the day to finish the whole trail. If you're giving up or it gets late, you can get a ride in the middle where the trail crosses Chickatawbut Road.
Charles Adams
I grew up wandering these trails. They are a hidden gem on the south shore. I worry the new people hiking them have no respect for nature though. They are parking on top of newly growing under brush and leaving trash everywhere. We have to take care of our preserves. Get some respect people.
Steve Tetreault
There was a whole lot more trail than my hiking companion and I expected here! Make sure you get a good picture of the entire trails map at the trail head - there are a lot of twists and turns, and while the paths have blazes and signs, they're occasional rather than regular, so when you come across one, you're going to want to be able to locate yourself correctly. We encountered a group that was wandering around looking for the headquarters. We didn't know the area well enough to help out; later on, while consulting the map to figure out our own position, we realized that group had been heading in the wrong direction. There's enough space to get pretty turned around, so bring some navigation skills. But the trails were nicely cleared, and there's plenty of trails and elevation changes to make for a nice variety. Definitely planning to hike here more in the future!
Sarah Tomko
So we had a great hike, except for the part where a couple was having sex on the trail at the the skyline overlook. Who does that? There are children who hike on this trail.
Otherwise the trail was clean, and well kept. Just stupid people who decided to to ruin other people's nice hikes.
Artien Nadal
Always a good spot for a nice walk.
Brian Wyka
Awesome place for hiking.
dragonneus
One of our favorite local hiking trails are in the blue hills. All kinds of challenge levels. If you want a steep climb start at the nature center near the ski slope
jill landers
The Blue Hills is one of my favorite places to go for a walk. It's a great place for a hike without having to drive far. Great place for kids to play in nature. Beautiful views of Boston.
Ajit Vyas
Great park with many trails in the South Shore, just north of South Shore Plaza. The Skyline Trail is popular, and of moderate difficulty level, offering nice vistas as you get atop the 4 hills it passes by. There is convenient parking on the eastern edge near the ice skating rink. Be mindful to follow the painted marks on the trees to keep on the right trail, especially in winter. Make sure to carry a trail map with you!
Kevin Bates
Great place for an easy walk or a hike with very easy access. I wish there was trail maps you could take with you. Unfortunately there is a lot of trash and dirty diapers near the parking areas. Some people are gross.
Chris Taylor
Well marked trails with varying difficulty. Was able to do a good portion of the skyline trail with a 2 and 3 year old (had to carry on some of the climbs and decents)
Kathy
Love this place! From the native blueberries in August to the awesome skyline trail, I love this place. If you're anything like me, download the map to your phone BEFORE you go. The map makes the trails easy to navigate and there are also numbered markers at many of the intersections of different trails.
Timur Rustamov
Spent a couple of hours walking the trails starting from Houghton's pond. Really nice and calm area with lots of picturesque trails. Make sure to reach the Skyline to overlook the while area and take a look at Boston downtown in the distance. Be prepared to do some minor climbing.
Richie Treanor
Lucky to have this space so close to the city. Took it for granted when it was essentially my back yard growing up. Hiking, biking, skiing (I guess), all minutes from the city.
I've hiked in the Colorado Rockies, Peruvian Andes, Nepalese Himalayas, the Alps, the rugged terrain of Afghanistan, and of course all over the white mountains. A day in the blue hills charging up and down the skyline trail is as challenging as any hike you can find anywhere. A great place to train if you can't get to NH, but it's also pretty beautiful in its own right.
If you take the skyline trail to its northernmost point past Little Blue, you can explore an empty spur of highway from the planned/abandoned I-95 route through Boston.
Razor
The hike was nice and easy.
Matt Brooks
Lots of paths and trails. Great for snowshoeing as well. Download the trail map from the dcr website. It comes in very handy if you want to see all the interesting stuff they have. There is no better place to hike in close proximity to Boston
Jack D
Great mountain biking with beautiful views of the city.
Alex Likos
I've hiked many hills but this is by far my favorite. You can begin your day with a visit to the rescue/museum at the base of the hill, and end it careening down the ski slope to the parking lot. It's a grand old time
Robert Tuss
A great, big (6700 ACRES) beautiful place to go for extended hiking or for short hikes with tremendous views of Boston and the harbor. Make sure you pick up a map at the Park Ranger Station. The small donation well help the Friends of the Blue Hills, who provide the map!
Tyler McGeehan
The skyline loop is a beautiful hike, but make sure you bring a map. The trail blazes are clear, but a little confusing. They randomly changed midway through the hike. If I wasn't using AllTrails and watching the map, we would have ended up on another trail.
Kathryn Sheehan
Gorgeous view from the observation tower at the top. There's plenty of picnic tables at the top too. We definitely had some trouble keeping track of the trail markers, we felt they were inconsistently spaced.
Vyju Iyengar
What an amazing hike we had. But be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring a stick. The Ricky path makes even the one mile hike a tough one if you are not used to it.
Ng'ang'a Muchiri
Great hiking trails; awesome view of Boston. Remember to take the map. Colored trail markers are not super visible and you may easily have to wander for a bit before you can find your way back. But if you're like me and consider getting lost a big part of enjoying the outdoors, skip the map and test your sense of direction!
Nathan Wait
Always a great spot! Good to get out of the city and walk or hike, our dog loves it too! The trails here are well maintained and easy to follow.
R L
Nice hike, lots of people, most wearing mask, free running dogs, good climbs, good shoes a must.
Will definitely do trails again. Lots of options.
Dillon Kenny
Two of the 1 star reviews are actually positive, and one is about a fast food restaurant... This is a great place to hike and I will continue to go back. It gives
you a great idea of what the world used to look like before the Industrial Revolution.
Al L.
Great place to hike! So many different spots to visit, including an overlook where you can see the city of Boston, as well as a hike up to a weather station along side a ski mountain! Fun all year round. Also, check out the Audubon nearby. They have many great animals including owls, deer, Fox, and otter!

The Blue Hills is the best place around, perfect to get out of the city and into nature. It is such a big area with varying terrains. If you get out there, do us all a favor and keep the place clean, or better yet help us clean up after the people who don't respect the land as much and prefer to litter.
Amanda Gates
Great hiking with very doable difficulty. View is great and the paths are great and exciting!
BUT, poorly marked trails! Maps can only be so helpful if the paths continuously intersect and there aren’t any upkept markers.
Erik Provost
Wonderful place to hike around Boston, many miles of trails of varying terrain and difficulty make it a good outdoor recreation spot for all. On clear days, the views from the peaks of the hills are superb- from the top of the weather observatory, 60 mile visibility is not unheard of. Trails are visibly marked, and maintained pretty well; the reservation is a slice of nature surprisingly close to the heart of Boston.
Matt Dibb
Several places to park. Variety of trails marked for difficulty with a mix of terrain: grass, big rocks, roots & dirt, gravel, and a bit of pavement near the pond. Maps at each trail head. Great views of Boston and the surrounding areas from up atop the Skyline trail.
Vasily Selyuminov
That’s the place where you can taste real, actual blueberries in Boston, not that oversized stuff from stores and commercial farms. The blueberries (starting mid-July) are just as good as the ones you get in northern coastal Maine, without having to travel to Maine.
Great hiking as well, but parking lots are usually packed on weekends, but not as much on weekday evenings.
Fran Yuan
Fantastic hiking for so close to the city. Wish some of the trails were better marked but now that I've been there, I'm sure I'll find my way around better next time. Great resource for Bostonians!
Nicholas Mcdonoough
18 minutes to the top, always a nice walk remember there are rattlesnakes here so be careful, do homework if you think not!!! Barley see them but they are around!! That has been said to me decades ago
K.M. Z
At this places I've done Trail runs any and every time before I do a 5k 10K or 8/13 miler I go here the hills are not that difficult and the trails are all marked have not really gotten lost..some people go walking and some go with kids just do family stuff. Not a bad place 😉 at all in my opinion. …
Nate Hollander
It's ok. Finding used condoms where you park up at the top of the mountain is nasty. Doesn't seem like they clean it up much or take good care of the place. Trails are pretty cool expect for all the trash along them. It would be a beautiful place if people were not such scumbags and actually cared about the place.
Keith Constant
Great place!! Only draw back, and it can be a large one, is how busy this place can be, but being so close to Boston, you should expect nothing less. Great alternative to hiking in New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine, but can be very crowded.
Keith Bellanti
Great mountain bike trails. Hiking is cool too I guess
Laura Derr
Always somewhere new to explore, hidden trails, clear streams, intriguing rock formations, views in all directions, trails for all ages, from easy to challenging. Plus a nature museum and a great public beach on Houghton's Pond with greatly improved services. Such an extensive gem so close to the city!
lynniarc
Gorgeous hiking the skyline trail today. Training for a hiking trip in Lake Garda, Italy next week. A gem near Boston with many trails from easy, wooded ones to the challenging rocky skyline trail. Highly recommend visiting in any season. No fees!
John Randall
I've only been here once in the summer, but holy cow. I will be back. What beautiful and fantastic hiking! I parked by the trailside museum and took the red trail up to the weather observatory, then sat on a rock overlook for a few hours …
Christopher Hastings
Lovely bit of dirt... By far the closest big pile of trees and dirt to Boston. If you feel the need to get outdoors, but still like to hear the constant sound of jets landing at Logan, the the Blue Hills are for you.
Michael Meyer
Over populated and over hiked trails. Very convenient location and public transportation access. Dog walkers need to pick up and carry their dog excrement with them not leave plastic bags in the trail.
Mackenzie Baker
Good place to hike or do something outside. If you stay overnight in the building it's pretty old and the heat and air conditioning are not very good. The bathrooms smell and I would not want to take a shower in there.
Odun
Easily accessible very family-friendly environment. Lifeguards very alert and safety conscious. Water is much cleaner than the typical pond inlet at a reserve. A definite if in the Boston area on family vac...
Karena Crawford
I had fun hiking the hill and I was so proud of myself when I made it all the way to the top. The slippery rocks were challenging to walk on and I almost stepped on dog poop a couple of times. I think the bathrooms could stay open longer than they did.
Tim
Good hiking trails with lots of elevation changes. Dogs love it.
Ro Hassan
For people who aren't familiar with the area, picking a trail might be a bit of a challenge. So far my favorite is the red blue trail that starts across from the headquarters. Take a picture of the trail map at the entrance and use it along the way. Super helpful.
Tim Swift
Definitely stop in for a map for $3.50. The trails are much more fun when you can pick where you want to go.
Jared Hall
Great trails ranging from beginning to experienced. Closest hiking you can get just outside of Boston. Parking is sometimes limited during peak season weekends
Patrick Desmond
Great place to hike, run, bike or just be in nature. A real gold nugget just south of Boston. We are fortunate to have such a special place. The DCR does a great job of managing it although more needs to be done about the litter that is generated by the day users at the pond. Perhaps empty the barrels at the end of the day so the animals dont get into them or institute a carry in/carry out policy.
Pratham Gujar
Blue Hills is a great place for an easy hiking area for which smaller children can do. There are multiple trails, some are harder than others, to choose from and the scenery is great.
Vadim Sedletsky
Excellent place for swimming during the season you can trail ride over there and places to hike you know overall great location parking is free.
I've only been there off season so you cannot take a swim but I'm waiting to come again during the season.
Elizabeth Krogue
A ton of different trails to explore, stroller-friendly trails, bike trails and all the in between.
Houghton's pond is a great place for swimming, so is Ponkapoag pond. Houghton's pond only part of the lake can be swam in and there's a lifeguard on duty. Ponkapoag pond has is much larger and if you can find a spot you can swim. ☺️
Christopher Tabone
Great day hikes and trails covering a variety of terrain. Well maintained and easily accessible. Only issue is the crowds of visitors on weekends. Some select trails are not too busy if you know where to look.
Chris Fitzgibbons
Always have s great time hiking to top with family...the small free zoo exhibit is good as well but have to go online to reserve a time slot now...still free tho
Elizabeth Hunter
The hike to the top is great for all experience levels, with longer loops for those who want more of a challenge. The lookout at the peak gives you a gorgeous view of the surrounding area, all the way to Boston!
don martin
It's nice to go for a hike with the family
john d
This is the place for a scramble to the summit of a lesser Blue Hill peak, around 500’. Winter brings varying conditions, it’s rather less ascendable if lots of snow and even less so if icy. (tho)
Joseph M. B
For what it's worth, trails are extremely fun to traverse and the view from the peak of the skyline trail is one to behold. Easily one of the best spots for high elevated views of Boston and surrounding islands.
KHAN
Great Spot with view .Amenities are great .Rooms bit dated but makes up with subway & pizzeria next door .Cathedral Rock 5 min,Chapel 5 min ; Red Crossing 2 min .Don't forget to take Sedona trolley tours economic way to see whole town without worrying about parking during busy Season .
Danielle Cratch
Beautiful cool crisp day to hike with our family. Trails are perfect for a little challenge. Loved seeing all the puppies and their families.
Jacob Davis (DrNeato)
Easily the best hikes and most verity near Boston. Lots of trails, which can get busy, but there are lots that are tucked away and pretty quiet if your willing to work for it.
Pinank Pandya
The hike is moderate level and I would recommend it as it’s worth to have a wonderful Boston skyline view from top. You can actually bring some snacks and enjoy there in a sunny day.
Isabelle Viellard Pelve
Hikers’ and bikers’ “paradise”, advanced and family alike!
Karen Carothers
We (my husband, son and I) hiked 4 miles of the trail on June 26, 2015. It was a scenic and beautiful hike with multiple surprise wildlife sightings. We spotted a full grown white-tailed deer within minutes of of the trailhead and soon found a large American bullfrog sunbathing near water. Later we encountered a 5 foot Black Rat Snake, who stayed around long enough for multiple photos of his head and body before moving on through the leaves. Finally we had a very large wild turkey cross the path directly in front of us and then disappear into the woods. We were impressed by how clear and well-marked the trail was and how great the views of the Boston skyline were.
Sadok Bazile
Great spot for a nice hike with the dogs
Gino Escalante
Great area to walk around and get away from the city. Spend about 2 hours walking around and got through a bunch of paths. Finish your journey on the observatory to get a nice view of Boston!
Michael Cabrera
One of my favorite hiking spots around the city. Very well kept, perfect for small group outings with space for a BBQ.
Paul Marquez
Today was a lovely fall day: fresh air, beautiful foliage, uncrowded. The Blue Hills Reservation is a treasure that must be experienced, again and again, fall, winter, spring, summer.
Stayc
Summer is a lovely time here. So much to do from hiking the trails, swimming in the pond, barbecuing, biking, jogging, picnicing you name it. Fall is great for leaf peeping and winter for skiing.
Michael Neas
Some of the toughest trail runs in mass, one of my favorite places to train right south of boston. Get ready for rocks on rocks on rocks, but also some cool views and fun terrain
Cheryll D
If you enjoy the outdoors, you will love this place. It bost several hiking, cycling and walking trails. Public washroom, countless picnicing areas, plenty parking, baseball field, ponds and so much more.
Genesis Royal-Langham
A beautiful, rocky, hike through the woods lead to picturesque views of the city of Boston. On a clear day you can see the John Hancock and Prudential as though they're a mile away.
nelson rivera
nice place to go and relax
also good to take you dog with you.
Steve Anderson
I love the Blue Hills Reservation and started hiking the trails about twenty years ago. The Trailside Museum is the place that introduced to me the beauty that is nature.
I started out only hiking by Trailside but have been exploring more and more each time I go out and I'm always amazed with each new venture out.
I'm so surprised there isn't a cell tower around here...classic example of NIMBY created by rich elitists want to preserve their country living on the outskirts of Boston. If they are unreasonable to put in your backyard then your cellphone service should be restricted when your in my backyard or city!
If it's to protect wildlife then this would be a perfect time in the history of the Blue Hills to fight for a grant to protect the natural ecosystem while incorporating technology safely and for the maximum benefit for all.
The educational, I financial gain, and increased safety for families trying to connect with nature seems like a far greater gain than any argument about a tower being an eyesore and taking away from the scenery. Just imagine being able to pinpoint a location of a injured or lost hiker or naturalists trying track and monitor native wilderness in all of its glory.
Michael Thomas
Beautiful place to go hiking! It's close and convenient to where I live, there are many trails based on your level and most of the hikers that I've came across are very friendly.
FatmireM
Beautiful views of Boston Sky Line and Ocean from the top of Blue Hills StoneTower. Also, the hike trails alone are worth the trip!
David Calver
This area has beautiful scenery and hiking trails. With the current state of affairs going on it's a great place to get out of the house and visit

Sarah Stanley
Blue Hills is a great place to hike with the family. Easy trails marked clearly and spectacular views.
Laura Rigolo
Great area to hike near the city. Skyline trail has nice views. A bit crowded on weekends.
Heran Nho
Short distance from Boston. Restrooms at Houghton's Pond beach are open. Great trails, short /long. But there are the occasional bags of dog poop that irresponsible humans leave behind.
Frank Whorf
Nice hike. The outside animal's were free to see. As of now you need to fill out a form to visit, due to Covid.
Michael Gleba
Nature at it's finest minutes from Boston. Many trails, the trailside museum is fun, and lots of long winding roads that I enjoy riding my motorcycle on. Plus one of the best views of downtown Boston (with an area to park you can see tje city from) from south of the city on Chicatawbut road.
Lillian Berger
Nice place for hikes they have a small area animals and birds the creatures you would find around bluehill area in winter you can ski there .Beautiful nature. Walks
Swaraj Totey
Amazing and beautiful place. Must go and explore.

Went to Houghton's Pond today. I've been coming here since I was a child with mom & dad. It's still as beautiful. I am 54 years old now and my kids come here on their own. It's a must see!
Michael Barillot
Love the peacefulness you can find for meditation, hiking, or mountain biking. Nice views of Boston skyline from some areas too.

My favorite local hiking area! My favorite trail is the blue Skyline Trail which is challenging, rocky, and has some scrambling. There are lots of trails here for all hiking levels.

Tallest point on the east coast! Very peaceful, nice easy hike but with some of steep hillsides here and there if youre feeling adventurous. I usually bring my dog, Ruby
Brandon's life
Blue hills reservation is a great family place
It has a lake which is safe for swimming. They have a play ground and a little food place. They have places to sit and i really like it there. They have places to cook food.
Patrick Leaver
Very well kept trails that go for miles and miles with numerous views of the Boston skyline and surrounding. Could easily spend 1 hour or 10 hours exploring all if the trails
David Krey
This place was awesome, the trails were difficult but my little brothers were able to conquer it, there were also many great views on the tops of the hills.

Such a good hike for the area that was in! Took the pup who thoroughly enjoyed chasing squirrels and snakes... am definetly going to be back once my thighs and calfs don't hurt as much!
Callie Martin
Nice hike! Skyline Trail is 9 miles total and has some decent elevation changes...considering it's in Quincy

James Williamson
Great place to hike any different trails of varying difficulty it is a great view from the tower at the top of the hill
Sujan Karki
Due to covid things, it will be better to reach early in the morning, to get a parking spot. Park will be close after certain occupancy limit exceed.
And swimming is allowed only the designated spot.
Kevin Cai
Best place for walks, runs, and biking. One thing that I would recommend is bug repellent, especially for the mountain paths.
Ian Toal
This is a beautifully park just outside of Boston that has enough trails to make you feel far away. There are some great views and its a nice place to walk with the family.
tawana pringle
Amazing time hiking
Connor Daniels
Best spot for hiking parking is small at the trail I was at but note there are many locations the trail was clean just the occasional bug or fly but overall nice it is located in Milton Massacusets and just 6 miles from north Quincy Massachusetts if you live near by it’s an easy hike some uphill witch is nice for me seeing I like a little workout if you are ready for and hour hike or more these trails are the spot I went into the trail for 30 minutes and still lots more to experience like the science center and weather tower on the peak would highly recommend
Swetha Srinivasan
This is a state park south of boston located in Milton. This has several trails but my favorite is the skyline trail. There are also easy trails around houghton pond and ponkapoag pond. located close to 93, it is easily accessible and has well marked trails. The skyline trail is quite rigourous and depending on your interest you can hike all of it or park near the tower and hike 15 mins for the views
Dan H
Great place for a quick hike bear Boston

Juliet Jenkins
Loved it. It had been too long. A bit too popular during the pandemic but great trail management and great social distancing adherence. Challenging up great blue hill but so worth it
Daniel Sheehan
Place is awesome, Respect for Respect, Don't forget Cutshamekin Hill...also known to be pronounced as Kitchamakin, Kuchamakin, or Cutshumaquin. Historical figure... It's on the Reservation map and Skyline Trail makes up the Kitchamakin Hill ridge line and looks over both the Ponkapoag Praying Lands and the Neponset River salt marsh entering the Boston Harbor where on the opposite banks, in or near Ventura Playground, on the Dorchester side, is said to be his "Resting Mound".
Shannon Keller
Great hiking, spectacular views. We park at Shea Rink and stage a car at the Park and Ride on Washington so we can do the whole skyline trail!
John Dinopoulos
Best place to hike within 10 miles of BOS. Make that the only place to hike within 10 miles 😂 Been coming here for 24 years, since I was a kid. The state does a great job with upkeep. …

Great family Labor Day on the trails
Maria A
Beautiful park with multiple trails that range in difficulty. Weekends can get a bit busy and the multiple parking lots can be jam packed after 10am.
L
A nice place so close to boston.I think the trails are not kept up like they used to and it easy to go off trail if you don't watch where you are going.I also disliked the fact that the Blue hills reservation allows hunting of deer.It is a shame you allow hunters to come in and use guns in there.
Samuel Jankey
Plenty of trails, everyone is being respectful of each other's space even though it's crowded. Perfect for a good walk, run, swim, or ride!

Amazing oasis of nature so close to " civilization." Walk from Ponkapoag exit 3 off rte128 in Milton through woods to Ponkapoag Pond in Randolph, or climb Big Blue from ski area on 138. Want an easier hike? Walk around Houghton's Pond. More calleng? Do the skyline trail. Something for every kind of walker.
