Reviews of Mount Mitchell State Park
Jen Rivard
I was here in late July and it was so peaceful. The air was cool & misty and there was moss covering the trees and fallen logs. The air was so refreshing to breathe in. There was a small museum packed with information about the environment, wildlife, geology, and history of the area. The man who “discovered” it as being the highest point on this side of the Mississippi River is actually buried near the peak! He died there while conducting scientific research. The info in the museum compared the habitat to that of Canada. There are magical trails to hike and a short, wide paved hike up to the summit. I highly recommend you go and check it out for yourself! I will be back again soon!
Angela Long
The summit was very nice to drive up to, the road beautiful. We took the small trail between the parking lot and the summit, and walking casually it took us 20 minutes, lots of stairs and rocks. I suggest having a coat for the high wind up top! And a walking stick if it's muddy, many of the rocks get very slick. Beautiful fir trees and scenic overview at the end. Walking the trail really feels like being in another world.
Carrie Hart
This is a beautiful park! It was very crowded, even for a weekday, but it is almost summer. There is a smooth, paved path to the summit. It might be challenging for some due to the slight incline, but it is only 300 yards long and there are benches along the way to sit and rest. Once you do get to the top, you won't be disappointed. There are 360 degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was gorgeous!!
I also took the nice Balsam Nature trail path. This had many information stations along the way that described the different animals, birds and flora at Mt. Mitchell. Don't forget to check out the museum and the gift shop. The museum is very interesting and has lots of information about the history of Mt. Mitchell.
Dave Diamond
Seeing God's creation from this incredible view is an experience worthy of getting to soon and often. The trip up the mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway was spectacular with views that are simply indescribable. And of course the view from the top is even more so. We are grateful we got to see it and can't recommend it more highly.

It's a great drive and and a nice walk to the top of the observation tower. Lower down are bathrooms and a ranger/visitor station. Everything else seemed closed - the restaurant and whatever building is at the top are totally under construction. I drove and walked to the top of the tower, then walked back down through the Balsam Wood trail, which is really beautiful. That puts you out at the lower area of the top parking lot.

Known in Cherokee as Attakulla and later named after Elisha Mitchell. Mount Mitchell is a sight to behold, the drive up is fairly easy. Keep speed under 25mph and under 10mph in parking zones. The top has a restaurant but it’s currently being renovated. There is plenty of parking and two ways to reach the summit, a fairly easy paved path and the balsam nature trail. My wife and I enjoyed walking though the nature trail, you will see red spruce and Fraser fir. This area reminds me of Spruce Knob because of the similarities to the northern Canadian forest. Also on the summit is the tomb of Elisha Mitchell.
Victoria McIntyre
Go visit the observation deck!! It’s a fairly simple hike - all paved and not too too long. It was cloudy when we went, but still super cool. We talked to a couple of people who biked all the way to the top!
There is plenty of parking. Before heading to the observation area, there’s an education center, gift shop, snack shop, and port-a-johns. There are benches and resting areas available on the way up to the observation area.

I’m lucky to only live about 1 1/2 hours from Mount Mitchell. I took my 8 year old son on a day trip here and he loved it. As soon as you start your ascent to the top you tune your radio to an AM station to hear all about the Mountain. A ways up there is a rangers station to stop, use the bathroom, and get a little info about the mountain. At the top parking lot there is a small snack bar, a small gift shop, and a informative room to learn all about Dr Mitchell and the Mountain. Short hike up to the top of the mountain leads to breathtaking views.

Take the Deep Gap trail on Mount Mitchell. It is a strenuous hike, with lots of climbing. The rocks are quite slippery when wet. But the views are astonishing. The trail was fairly secluded with not many hikers. We had the feeling of being the only ones there.

First State Park in North Carolina (established in 1915) and highest point east of the Mississippi River (6,684 ft). The park contains a great set of trails, an observation tower (at the summit), museum, gift shop, campground, etc. You can even drive to the top and take a short walk (only 300 yards) to the summit. Access to the park is off of the Blue Ridge Parkway so even the drive to the park is nice.
David Nershi
If you're looking for the highest point east of the Mississippi, here it is. We drove to the summit parking lot and walked up to the observatory. The walk is on a wide, paved path, but it is rather steep. There are benches along the way in case you need a rest or aren't used to the elevation.
The observatory is a circular concrete lookout area that lets you check out the 360 degree view at 6,684 feet of elevation. Four annotated photo placards show you what you are looking at, which includes many peaks and lakes in North Carolina and Tennessee.
We took a nature trail from the top down to the parking lot. It was great but may be considered strenuous for some with plenty of rocks and ups and downs. It took us about 30 minutes.
Food and portapotties are available at the parking lot.
The number one tip is to prepare for cool weather at the top. It was comfortable in the mid-70s below and a windy, chilly 53 degrees on top. Allow plenty of time to get there, too. You'll be driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where speeds range from 35 to 45 mph.
JimBo' B. (JimBo')
The drive was pleasant, and views for a cloudy day was okay? But, you have to go with whatever nature provides on a given day?
So instead of a lot of pictures of cloudy mountain tops, I looked into the woods and found the deep dark green moss and fern contrasting with reds and browns of tree barks, dappled with small out cropping of layer rock inspired yet another view 6684 feet up.
As for the facilities that accommodate Mt. Mitchell State Park visitors for their short visit?
You have a self guided museum with historical information to help better understand the quest for reaching the highest peak East of the Mississippi.
A gift shop for any token to remind you of your visit.
Now, I'm not a dog owner, do I like dogs if cared for and controlled. And everyone who had these great pets did care for them. My complaint is the State Park, while they provided water bowls for thirsty hounds. We humans couldn't get water from fountains? While dogs could release themselves along the cemented wide trail leading to the top. No plastic bags were available for pet owners to clean up. And we humans had use of port-a-jons that were filthy.
Folks, I always give a review of what I find. That way you can know what you may find on your visit.
I hope like me you find the time to enjoy the blessings. Ask a stranger if they would like for you to take a photo of them, and their pets. Say thanks to vets you see and support our State Parks.

Given that it was 9am, the view wasn't bad. There were very few cars around, probably because they knew views wouldn't be as glorious at 9am as it would be come 11am to 3pm. Temperatures were at least 10° cooler up there. It was still a beautiful time to be there for mental clarity.
Laurie Simmons
Short incline walk to observation deck. We visited on a cold, very windy March day. We dound snow still on the ground. Sky was beautiful blue and view made us forget about the temperature. Well worth the drive.
Susana Salas
Is amazing, the view is wonderful you can see everything from the top of the mountain.
At the place you can find good snacks.
You most were a good jacket is very windy and cold. And also was very crowded
Heath DeGaramo
It is such a scenic drive from the blue ridge parkway up to Mount Mitchell. I’ve been up several times, whether alone, with family, or with my wife. The trail from the parking area through the woods up to the summit overlook is beautiful and quiet. It feels otherworldly to stand on top in the silence and gaze across the view presented to you.
Emily knapp
This was one of the MOST beautiful places I've ever stayed. We will 100% be back! If you're camping BE PREPARED! There were several people who left because they did not have the right equipment for the weather.
Burcu
Stopped by while driving the NC part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Small walk to the summit from the parking lot and the views are amazing! It was very windy and cold when we visited, would like to explore the trails next time while it's pleasant outside.
Laurel Hendrickson
Neat to be on top of the world! At least east of the Mississippi. It was about 40° that day, a little snow hidden under some trees. The view was amazing. The walk from parking to the top has seating along the way as it’s about a quarter mile walk uphill. We used the seating as we’re older. If you go when it’s cold be careful walking up the final ramp to top platform as there was ice on the side the sun can’t hit.
Jessica Reisner
Great experience for anyone who can't or doesn't want to go on crazy hikes! The path is paved, although it is pretty steep in places and the facility lets you park close enough to the top. Amazing views from the summit!
Kennon Rymer
Stop here to be at the top of the eastern US. Great stop and lots of parking. Good snack shop and US Park Service Store. Easy .3 mile hike up a paved ramp to the top. A must see!
Michelle Luna
Amazing during early November. Probably should have went sooner to see all of the fall foliage since the leaves fade quicker higher on the mountains. It was a gorgeous view.
Jay Schuchardt
We enjoyed our visit. We lucked out with the weather...it cleared up so we could see the area. Beautiful views. Check out the 2nd floor of the visitor center, many pictures about the history of the area.
travis morris
Amazing views at the summit, very short but strenuous walk to the top from the parking lot. Concession stand and gift shop available, restrooms on site. Numerous trails around the mountain with educational material along the way.
Steve Mickley
Beautiful place...the weather was clear and the short walk (not at all a "hike") to the viewing platform provided a 360-deg. view that included Clingmans Dome in the Smoky Mountain NATIONAL PARK. While you are there pay your respects to Dr. Mitchell, DD for whom the mountain is named. His grave is just below the summit.
Regina Osborne
A beautiful outing, a short ride up the Blue Ridge Parkway which is breathtaking in and of itself. There's history to be learned as well as a gift shop and picnic area. The paths are paved and easy to navigateand once at the summit the views are breathtaking.
Lewis Terry
Very cool experience. Part of me wishes we had a better view, but it was also cool to be literally up in the clouds. Speaking of cool, with the wind and temperature much cooler than lower elevations, it was pretty chilly for early September. Figure on 10-20 degrees cooler than down lower and with a wind chill, and plan accordingly.
Charles Pinney
A drive though the North Carolina mountains wouldn't be complete without a stop at Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet. It's easily accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway with ample parking. The path to the summit is an easy walk and the views are absolutely epic. On a clear day the Appalachians stretch for miles. The info boards highlighting distant peaks is really cool.
sarah pierce
Pictures along the way. Beautiful scenery. Climb to the peak is short, paved but steep in some areas. We were in the clouds and smelled so fresh.
Ryan Mace
Definitely worth the drive from Asheville. Once you arrive you have a short walk to enjoy the view. Despite being summer, the weather was beautiful. The drive is scenic. The people that work there are friendly and knowledgeable.
Kim Plotner
Breathtakingly Beautiful 😍 Scenic views for miles and the Summit was amazing! Great vac spot, plenty of trails and outdoor activities. Highly recommend everyone come visit at least once!! …
David Presson
For several decades I've been coming to this impressive height (tallest point east of the Mississippi river) to catch the views and hike beautiful forest lands. My most recent visit was a very cold day as "rime frost" had collected on the trees. Parts of the visitor center were closed for repairs, so I missed my traditional hot chocolate drink. The expansive views from the pinnacle observation deck are fantastic but oh so cold this time of the year.
Talal Zraik
From BlueRidge Parkway you take the road up Mt Mitchell, the highest mountain in USA east of the Mississippi to a large parking lot where there isa museum and bathrooms. Then a steep 300 yard trail take you to a round elevated stony platform at the mountain summit with magnificent 360 degrees views of the surrounding BlueRidge mountains and valleys.
There are few trails to walk too.
Parking is free. There is no entrance fee.
Heather C
Absolutely clear day which is rare so we could see everything. Walk wasn't too challenging from the parking lot, and plenty of benches with some protection from the wind are scattered along the walk to the peak. Beautiful views, well paved, and signs are clear describing what can be seen in every direction. Definitely worth a quick trip to the top of the highest peak east of the Mississippi! Hiking trails looked rather challenging for my out of shape self so I opted for the parking lot instead.
Prabha Shankar
Highest mountain east !!!!!. A very well maintained , very clean roads , view are amazing on the way , an observatory walk is about 300 yards from the parking lot. Observatory walk could be easy to little moderate. There is a reconstruction going on observatory parking (Aug 2021), so temporary toilets are there. View from the top is amazing and best part is scenic drive along the route.
Zoro Elias
Mt.Michell trailhead was a great and Moderate difficulty hike. Great views heading up to the summit. I managed to finish the hike with my leg injured. I trip and hit a rock with my leg, just glad I didn’t break lol. The top of the summit is definitely breathtaking and well worth the long hike you will put in to it. Lastly I want to say Thank you! To the blonde woman from Ohio who was so kind and gave me two ibuprofens, I wouldn’t have been able to finish the hike if it wasn’t for your kindness. You’re an angel 😇. Glad to know there are still kind and decent people in this Great Country.
Alli Traywick
The drive is amazing, make sure you have gas though there is non at the top. They are under repair with an addition of a new building at the top. The short hike to the top lookout takes your breathe away make sure your batter is full the photos will blow your mind when you get back home. Places to picnic and walk, one could spend the entire day here. Nature at its finest, the trees are truly green the perfect forest green, butterflies in August they are everywhere. Flowers blooming and along the road are so beautiful.
Madison Taylor
Absolutely beautiful trail. We took the commissary to Alice trail to mount mitchell. Well worth the hike. Easy at first but gets harder as you go. Only saw one other person until mount mitchell!
lauryn roby
We had a wonderful experience hiking at Mount Mitchell State Park. Ashley at the gift shop/snack area was incredible. She was so kind and knowledgeable about the area. Definitely want to come back!
Anthony Smith Jr
Hiked Deep gap trail. 4.3 miles to the campgrounds. 18° @ 7am windy but beautiful. 4.3 miles back was burtal. Not for just anybody. Watch out for the ice.
Tyler
I am shocked at how many gorgeous places there are in NC. Here is yet another "detour worthy" stops. Yes, detour from your route, sacrifice a couple hours and bask in the amazing beauty God crafted here at Mount Mitchell.
For the history buffs, this place has a REALLY cool.stoey to it. I won't spoil it for you, just know that it's neat and nostalgic.
Diana Beckett
Lovely view from the summit! Paved pathway from the gift shop area to the summit is steep but only 300 yards. It would be too bumpy for a stroller, in my opinion.
Kevin Blalock
Absolutely beautiful! Well worth the walk to the top. Definitely take a walk down the nature trail...lots of things to see and learn about. Gorgeous rock formations, and the plant life is amazing! We even had the privilege of watching the clouds pass between us and other visitors! 🤍💙 …
Matthew Clark
Really nice overlook. Ample parking. Port-a-potties available but messy on Sunday afternoon. Small gift shop and small snack shop. Some trails but we didn't venture off on these.
Lots of overlook stops on the way up while driving the Blueridge Parkway from Mills River area. Expect 1 1/2-2 hours to get to the state park if making stops
Recommend you pack a lunch and plenty of water and snacks.
Tom Fletcher
It was cloudy the day we went so the view was not as good as normal. Climb to the top of the observation platform and see for miles in every direction. The small museum and gift shop are worth a short visit.
The Balsam Trail is a short loop trail that is not too hard, even for most young kids. Start at the top near the museum and a good bit of it is down hill. Other trails are there if you have time.
Picnic tables with charcoal grills and great views, and one covered shelter for rainy days.
If you are east of the Mississippi, this is as high as you can get.
Enjoy a stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or drive in through Burnsville, where you can also enjoy a small mountain town.
D R
An unplanned but beautiful drive up from Rutherfordton. Below freezing and the wind had a bite to it but it was magical seeing all the frost. Some hearty folks up here walking up to the summit, that wind chill was intense.
Mooshroom Lady
After a strenuous hike up the mountain, I got to see an amazing view and I don't regret it. It was very nice to see mountains for miles and sit on the benches there to take in the view. Free entry and free parking. There's even a free little museum you can spend a few minutes walking around after being on Mt Mitchell.
J Bec
Lovely drive up, plenty of parking while we were there. Great views from the top and interesting information signs. Be sure to take the nature trail on the way down. It may have been the best part of our visit.
Nicholas Perkons
Awesome, dog friendly state park! The hike to the top is certainly a trek but well worth it. Many reviews mention “rocks and roots” but don’t let that deter you. Oh and yes, there really is a convenience store at the top of the mountain!
Mariam
Love the top view of Mount Mitchell, Its highest point east of the Mississippi. We visited the mountain in the month of March but in Summer its a different view, wild flower, greenery makes its beautiful. They also have a small gift shop and a museum. Would love to come back.
Aaron Dunn (Big Twig Homes)
What a beautiful place to visit to see for miles from the mountain top. Plus you get to drive part of the Blue Ridge Parkway
Mary Beth Lane
This was spectacular! Not sure one day was enough. The hikes are hard though! Well, for me they were, but so worth it! If this trip is in your future and you hope to hike some of the more strenuous hikes, start conditioning now :). I could have used better trail type shoes. If you are here with several people, I might recommend parking one car at the top and one at the bottom. For the people who get to the top and say, yea I am not going down. Or if you start at the top, you may not want to go back up. That said, we saw a family with a younger child, the mom was pregnant and the dad had the baby strapped in a carrier on the front of him, and I dont think they were even sweating. They passed us going up, we were still going up and they were coming down.
Cindys cross stitch
The trail is well maintained . Beautiful views. This is a hard trail. Certain portions of the trail you will be climbing boulders. Beautiful picnic areas.
Robert Sherman
Wow! Incredible view, great staff and awesome NC Rangers. Scout Troop stayed two nights, hiked, camped on adjacent Pisgah national forest. Secret they didn't tell us was you can fill out a form that's preprinted and plentiful, where and when your hiking, and you can park your car there for free up to two weeks.
Ginny Levi
I go on the Balsam Trail. It is under the trees and feels so old and mossy. I love that trail. Also 10 degrees cooler up there.
C McCall
We love hiking at Mt. Mitchell. There are various trail options for easy, moderate, and strenuous hiking or backpacking as well as the option of just having a picnic. The views from the summit and open areas on the trails are beautiful on clear days! The Spruce and Fir forest is refreshing.
I'm attaching some photos of some views on a recent cloudy day.
For summer 2021, take your own food and drinks, as well as being prepared for much cooler temperatures and rain. Stop at the park office (if the limited parking allows) to use the bathroom before you go to the summit parking lot.
This summer the restaurant has been closed. Also, the concession area and bathrooms at the parking lot near the summit have been closed.
There is ongoing construction and the reason for only 4 stars (I considered 3) is that although they have a long row of port-a-johns, they are either not enough or not cleaned/serviced often enough to be adequate for the number of visitors. We've gone twice in July 2021 when the port-a-johns were out of hand sanitizer and were so full they were possibly a health hazard.
Anthony Harris
Great views from the top looking out into the mountains and trails with stunning views all around you.
Agnibina Mitra
One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Not much crowded as compared to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. We stayed in Little Switzerland, NC, a small town on the hills close to this state park. Very relaxing and very beautiful place.
Curtis Danielson
The trip up was fantastic with fall colors and beautiful scenery but the mountain top had heavy cloud cover so you couldn't see much. Will do it again if in the area.
Joseph Santini
You can’t beat the views at this amazing state park with 360 degree panoramic views that span three states. We took the old Mitchell trail; more strenuous and a lot of fun.
Steve Munoz
Most beautiful sunset I've ever seen in NC. The drive to Mt. Mitchell is awesome. By the way, the picture I have attached has not been modified and no filters or alterations.
Steve Bloodsworth
Excellent vantage point of most nearby mountains if you are lucky enough for a clear day. Beautiful trails of varying difficulty.
Ty Gutowski
Beautiful mountain with lots of places to hike. Trails for all types of hikers, short, long, easy and more strenuous hikes. Lots of plants and mushrooms to appreciate while hiking. On the way down the mountain our party saw a black bear crossing the road. Awesome mountain!
Donna Davison
Amazing park. Cannot believe it's taken me this long to visit such an amazing place. Hiked the Deep Gap Trail from Mount Mitchell to Mount Craig. Excited to return and hike more trails in the area.
Lina-Myree Thompson
Make sure to take a jacket because the elevation changes the temperature greatly. It's a gorgeous park with amazing views. I definitely recommend taking the hike between parking and the peak. It's amazing!
Scott Moffett
Awesome views at the highest spot east of the Mississippi. Located in North Carolina right off the Blue Ridge Pkwy.
Maya Batat
Didn’t do the hike, just drove up. Nice views, don’t really need to stay long if you’re not taking advantage of a trail nearby
Steve McGinn
If you come here you gotta walk up to the summit…it’s so peaceful with an amazing view.
Elena
Gorgeous and cold! We were lucky to go on a clear day so the far off views were crisp. It was a bit crowded, but that's to be expected.
The Museum was small, but well done and informative, my kids wanted to stay for quite a while.
The convenience center and had fresh sandwiches and browning, a large variety of snacks, and hot drinks which were welcome in the windy cold.
Victor
One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to in my lifetime. The views and atmosphere is amazing.
Michele Simmons
Although we had to wait to get access because the parking lot was full and the park at capacity, we were glad we waited. The views were great and worth the last 100 feet we walked uphill to get there. What a great place to be on an early summer day where temperature was 70°F.
Carrie Forbes
Beautiful park! Free to visit with amazing views! Perfect, dog friendly place to visit for a day on the parkway. Very friendly visitors who took our pic for us!
Gary Riemer
Mount Mitchell is spectacular. The view in each direction is endless. The walk way from the parking lot is all bricked. The incline is a bit steep in areas but nothing that a couple rest stops can't overcome. The overlook at the top is impressively made and elevates you several feet in the air to look over any vegetation. The informational plaques around the over look are also quite impressive. Well worth the drive and walk
Ronnie Berstler
Beautiful NC Treasure. Every Park ranger 5 star with Hospitality. Loved exhibits and gift shop was nice. Resturant under renovation. Will return to this area.
Bryce Hosseini
Astoundingly beautiful and very well maintained. The trail to the summit is wide, paved, and short, but also fairly steep. The views from the observation tower on the summit are breathtaking. The weather is always cool at this altitude, even in the summer, so it's wise to bring a windbreaker or a light jacket.
Sarfaraz Ahmed
Highest elevation east of Mississippi, not so difficult to get to the top, views may differ depending on weather. Clean restrooms available near entrance of the park. No entrance fees as of Nov 2022.
Gage Parker
Beautiful views from the highest point in the eastern US. Walk to the summit is pretty easy.
Shelly Yingling
I certainly was not expecting to be in a snow blizzard in October, but turning the corner and driving up to the top was amazing. When we arrived we literally were in a blizzard. The wind was blowing so hard I could barely stand up. I did walk into the woods to take a few photos of the breathtaking trail. I have been to Mount Mitchell in the Spring and Summer, but Autumn was amazing. Highly recommend

Great place to visit on a clear day. Pretty chilly all year round
Wendy T
I happened upon this park because the Google Assistant detoured me from my original directions to Tail of the Dragon in Robbinsville NC, when I asked, "What is Mt. Mitchell State Park?". It was a great mistake during my roadtrip and I can't wait to get back there and explore. I wish they offered cabins and WiFi. The views are absolutely stunning! I was so much in awe that the darkness caught up to me and I didn't reach my destination until almost midnight. A 3-hour diversion but it was so worth it. *** A must see! ***
Randy
The drive is absolutely amazing! The view is breathtaking
Cortney P.
Love it here, so pristine and absolutely beautiful even in winter 🥰 …
Curtis Rouse
We loved it there Bueatiful place in the fall
Looking forward to going back next year.
Darian Carson
The drive on the parkway is beautiful. Be sure to stop at an overlook or two! Breathtaking! Maybe it's because it was overcast, but the view from the observation point was anticlimactic. The walk up to the point was straight up and tiring and I wouldn't recommend it for injured/elderly. There are benches to sit upon during the climb.
Bullet
Nice drive to the summit, but that's it. There is a nice gift shop, a museum, and a place to get limited snacks. There's no food, as in sandwiches, and not a great selection of snacks. I was told that there'd be a restaurant there next year.
The low rating is because there's no complete restrooms, only a long line of Port-a-Potties. Not cool for a state park.
Lisa Houtman
Gorgeous, easy to walk mountain peak. Walk way is paved, parking was easy and the views were outstanding.
Mitch Green
Mount Mitchell is a beautiful park with amazing views at the top. An easy hike at the summit takes you to the observation deck, where on a clear day you can see up to 80 miles away. The temperatures at the top can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the base!
Ann Bejcek
The highest peak east of the Mississippi. Beautiful views. Interesting museum. Drive up to the parking lot and walk uphill for 300 more yards to this viewing area. Unpredictable weather but absolutely gorgeous on this day.
Dan Billingsley
I feel like if you're in this area to see mountain and valley views then the highest peak is a must do. Besides the tremendous views, there are a few great hiking trails. There's also a hike-in campground.
Victor Garcia
Beautiful and breath taking views! Totally worth it! Plenty of parking arrive early though! I recommend taking the Balsam trail on your way back down to your vehicle. I fell in love with the fir tree forest! They smell amazing! Will definitely come back soon!
Joe Chom
Mt. Mitchell State Park is absolutely breathtaking. The drive up to the summit is absolutely gorgeous. If you are traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway this is a must stop spot. When you get to the summit you have several different trails you can choose to hike. Also 300 yards up the hill is the highest peak East of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet. They have an awesome observation platform that offers a 360 degree view of the mountains. Would definitely recommend visiting this spot.

Going to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River is such an amazing experience. The trails are beautiful and dogs are welcome. We brought our two dogs and it was nice. They even had a bowl of water out by the snack bar for dogs!
Walking through the forest and being engulfed in the beautiful smell and beauty is like a dream. Obviously, I would recommend that you go!
Jamie Bader
Always worth the drive and breathtaking views!!
Great hikes throughout the Mountain. But be prepared for some rough terrain on some!
The Spruce is just beautiful, always love the different feel it gives you. May want to bring bug repellent. Somedays are better than other's with getting bit up.
The small hike to the the summit is easy and accessible for any age and anyone! I definitely recommend you doing it at least once. The 360 view is priceless!
Mark A
Very easy to get for just about anybody (wheelchair accessible even if someone wants to push up a pretty steel incline!), and this as the tallest point east of the Mississippi is a must see- also the pine forest is awesome to stroll through, so quiet. The views aren't necessarily any better than any point on the drive to the point, but the gift shop is nice and the staff are super helpful, and seeing the completely different environment of the pines is incredible
Jeremy TravelRN
Bathrooms are at the top after you drive up the blueridge parkway. Its an easy walk to the top, a little steep but only for a couple minutes. The views are breathtaking with great spots for amazing pictures. There is a store and snack bar at the top!
John Glessner
It was a beautiful day to be outdoors and experiencing the beauty and grandeur of Mt. Mitchell State Park. The hike till the top was fun and somewhat challenging, depending on which route you take. Great pavaranic views at the top were stunning.
Bonnie Robinson
We drove up to the summit and took the short, steep walk up to the overlook. We've been several times and have grown to expect clouds and cooler temperatures. It is such a serene feeling to be above the clouds. There are numerous trails ranging in difficulty, as well as picnic tables and restrooms closer to the summit.
Ravi Sunny Kumar
Too much concrete and gravel. Kills the nature experience. View is good. Most crowded of all other lookouts. It is the highest elevation East of Mississippi so worth a visit.
gaetan spurgin
If you’re driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway this is a must stop with entrance right off the parkway about a mile up you’ll find a ranger station there are seven primitive campsites which you can reserve but if you’re hiking in you can backpack just be sure to leave a notice on your dashboard so the Rangers know where you’re camping another interesting feet is sleeping here will allow you to sleep at a higher level than anyone on the East Coast as this is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi truly beautiful vistas and even on a foggy day the luscious forests create a beautiful environment to really explore the local area this beautiful mountain contains several different tree area
W.Bruce Bartholow
It's a nice treck from the parking lot up to the summit overlook.
Landry Courson
The views were great, little to no hike. But I will warn you do not waste your time or money on clothes in the gift shop. I purchased a green hoodie from here. I washed it a few times and the color is faint now, but it still bleeds green on my skin and it’s very hard to come off.
Ralph Browning
The views are insane! Go on a weekday if at all possible, weekends and warmer months and it is over run with visitors. Hike to the summit is worth it. Commissary Trail had some incredible views as well, and it's an easy hike.
Cheryl Trosper
Wow! Beautiful 360° views. It's a short hike, fairly steep to the top. Tons of parking, snack bar and port-a-pottys. Restaurant was closed for remodeling (Sept 22)

This park is amazing!!!! Definitely a must see!!
Morgan Stevens
Highest peak! Been vacationing to the area since I was a kid. Most recent visit July 2019 I brought my four new ones and enjoyed a hike down from the top and a bountiful meal at the restaurant. Grand parent approved ramp slope all the way up. No stairs. Wheels accessible. New improved summit layout. Enjoy the views and history! We took the balsam trail hike down from top to parking area. 8 6 3 0 carried baby and I had a walking boot and made it. Good easy hike.
J K
This is one of my favorite state parks. Not because there is a massive parking lot of top of it, eliminating any challenge to get to the top and enjoy the views, but because they are open in the winter months and sell local honey in the store at the top. Never been to the restaurant, but am curious. One of my favorite hikes starts at the bottom.
Always a pleasure to be here. Crowds are usually not too bad and respectful most of the time. Have seen people bring radios to the top and communicate with China/Russia, presumably. I have assumed the appropriate NSA staff are monitoring this potential espionage.
James Pappas
Oh man, this place is great! So easy to get up from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stunning views from the top. Don't rely on local weather to make your decision. The day I went up, it was overcast and drizzly in places near the mountain. But the peak was above most of the clouds and the view was spectacular. Took most from my Canon, but will share a couple from the phone. Easy walk to the summit from the parking area.
Brian Gentry
Great views. Very nice paved pathway to the observation tower. They have a snack bar with drinks and snack foods.
Kurt Bauer
An amazingly beautiful place. As is the wonderful drive getting there. Completely worth it. They do have a silly covid restriction, not allowing anybody on the observation deck. Though it's really not that big a deal. There's still a great view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Nikki Feenstra
Very accessible. We drove to the summit and did the Balsam Nature Trail. Views from the top were nice, but the observation deck was closed when we went, which was disappointing. The real highlight of this park was the trail, which is accessible from the summit parking lot. The surroundings were similar to a Canadian forest and vastly different from other hikes in the nearby area.
Crazy Jack
It’s a must to see the views are amazing!!! The walk up the hill is all paved but it’s good step towards the end. There are benches on the way up to rest at. It’s worth the hike The parking lot up top has a food concession stand and restrooms. You can drive your trailer up there there’s plenty of room to turn around it’s a roundabout parking lot
Lourdes Hernandez
Breathtaking views all the way up and when you finally reach the highest point, amazing views all around! Can't wait to experience it during summer as everything was closed in early Spring, so we didn't get to enjoy the restaurant or little gift shop. We did a small hike and it was so peaceful, you only heard the sounds of nature and a nearby waterfall!
Lauren V
Great park with a variety of hiking trails. You an drive almost completely to the top of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Ample parking, including overnight parking. There are multiple trail heads that start in the mountaintop parking lot. Great overlook a short walk from the parking lot. Visitors center, restrooms and souvenir store with seasonal hours.
Cathie Bales
Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. If you drive the Blue Ridge Parkway be sure to stop here for the panoramic views. There is a snack bar, museum and restrooms at the top. The trail to the top is steep but worth the effort. There are many hiking trails and camping.
David Danner
Great day to go outside and see a beautiful place.
Hiking trails abound. Could have brought a kite to fly. Do bring raincoats, as you are in the clouds, never know when it will rain.
Check out the nature trail & spring. Want longer hikes, grab a backpack & check in with the rangers.
Nick Houghton
Amazing views from the highest peak East of the Mississippi. Be warned that a majority of days the views will be at least partially obstructed by clouds. There is a road to the summit or for the adventerous a ~6 mile trail that climbs ~ 3,500 feet that starts at the Black Mountain Campsite.
donny simpson
This was my first time here, I liked the views here and on the way here and back down. The leaves we're changing colors very pretty, some falling, it was 25 degrees cooler up there than it was where I came from. The gift shop was out of hoodies in my size and some styles of t shirts too. No coffee or hot chocolate either. O and the blue ridge parkway with the tunnels, one of the most beautiful road trips I've ever had.
c. randall
Nice path, beautiful views, ample parking. Not sure why top deck was closed due to Covid but they allowed crammed conditions right below. There actually would have been more social distancing room if top was open.
MM Wallace
Very nice. The drive up was perfect! Note that if you come during the cooler time of year expect the Asheville approach to be closed. We came up from the other side but my sister got stuck in Asheville because the Rd was closed due to snow. We never even saw snow on our side(we came from Tryon). There's a concession stand at the parking area and lots of porta potties thank goodness...lol. It's a short walk up to the very top. Kinda steep switchbacks but they have benches for resting if needed. My 5yo son loved the little adventure and hot chocolate. The concession vendor was sweet as can be!
Dhiraj Kumar
Amazing place to be there.. close to 13 miles of To and Fro hiking in nature.. the bestest and longest ever hiking I did with my fabulous friends/colleagues. Must visit/recommended place for hikers or anybody wants to feel the nature.. enjoy it.. get fresh air from top of the est cost place in USA. Great place, Amazing View, Awesome Hiking Exp!!!
mike reitzel
Absolutely beautiful place to visit if you enjoy the natural environments of mountains and forrest. Some of the best hiking that you can experience from Hard to easy. The observation platform gives you the breathtaking views of surrounding mountains and valleys. Restaurant, gift shop, education museum and nature center. Life's short, take a hike.
Nathan Deremer
Highest point east of the Mississippi! We headed up the mountain in hopes of photographing the Neowise Comet with as little atmospheric distortion as possible, and snapped a few photos of the comet before the summit closed at 10PM. We headed back the following day to shoot the sunset and found a beautiful picnic area with a million dollar view along the western slope parking area of the summit. The PB&J might not have been fancy, but the view was absolutely spectacular!
S H
Very gusty and blustery 31 degrees with a wind-chill factor of 11 degrees at Mt. Mitchell when we visited a week ago. Easy walk up and once at the top, the views are spectacular!
Judy Brown
As a lifelong North Carolinian- I am ashamed to admit this was my first visit to Mt. Mitchell. Oh but what a beautiful day to go 11/7/2020 - and the temps were in the low 70"s, bright sunshine and still some color in the leaves. Lots of people but not overcrowded. There were quite a few cyclist on the Parkway that day as well. If you haven't been - it is worth the effort to go.
Jason McBride
Beautiful drive and rewarded with spectacular views!
Angelica Torres
So beautiful! We came on a Monday and it was not crowded at all! The bathrooms were super clean, I was impressed. There's a few hikes that you can do, and the trails are scenic. We didn't do much, but what we saw was pretty cool!
Patricia Vasko
Read about the park on Google before going, so you can truly appreciate what you're seeing and can pay your respects at the grave. Easy to find, off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Well maintained park. 300' long paved, wide walkway to the peak overview is a steep, strenuous walk for most people who were there when we were. Push through it, because the view is definately worth it! The fall colors and sunset scored 100% Clean bathrooms are located in the parking lot, down the steps. Everyone was wearing their masks, and social distancing.
Ashley Peschieri
Fun state park to see the fall foliage, the view from the summit was impeccable. Got to see waterfalls, wildlife and great views. The views up to the park itself we're super impressive. The Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful. When done with the hike check out the concessions at the top (picked up some homemade chow chow and jam).
Jarod Stevenson
A wonderful park! I have now hiked to the top twice from the ranger station, and it has been a fantastic trip each time. The first was magical, as it started to snow about half way up. Much of the trek makes you feel as if you are walking through scenes of a movie. The park is free to enter, and there is a restaurant open certain times of the year. In the winter be sure to call ahead to find out whether or not the park is open as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway as these often close due to inclement weather.
A. S
Gorgeous...sides of entire road has beautiful wild flowers. The parking area has restrooms and is wheel chair assembly. Not too much hiking till you reach the top. Its gorgeous view from the top. Just beside the parking area there is camp ground and restaurant.
Christina (Chrissy)
It was fun there was ice very nice view of the mountains but, the only thing that was bad was there camp area was closed because of covid so that was the only bad thing but we did see ice on the side of the mountain from the cold weather I would recommend brining warm clothing because the wind it cold but it was very nice.
Travel 90
first time visiting there
the view from the top was insane and the scenic during the trip is fabulous too. very worthedfor driving 3 hours from home
Greg Curry
Drove up here along the blue ridge parkway with my girlfriend. It was a perfect day to be here and the park was very clean and sanitary. Rangers were friendly and the views were absolutely stunning. Can’t wait to visit in the fall to see the foliage!
Iurii Novak
I am so happy to be here. 6684 feet is a highest point of Eastern Part the USA. Nice asphalt, a lot of overlooked places, clear area and my pleasure for service. Take your car and enjoy your land!!!
James Knick (Jay)
I can't believe how many reviews I read and a good number of them deal with restrooms and parking! What about the beautiful view people? Not wonder there was a toilet paper shortage!
Aimee Gambrell
I absolutely love this place! It’s breathtakingly stunning. Great hike, love the weather up there, it’s a lot cooler than the bottom of the mountain so maybe take a jacket in the spring and fall. It was 62 at the summit and I went in the summer.
Mark Boyd
Would love to camp here sometime. Well worth the drive and short hike to the top to the observation tower. Get ready for some amazing views of these amazingly beautiful mountains. The hike to the tower is mostly sidewalk and is only about 900 yards...however, it's all uphill to get there. Good news is that it's all downhill on the return.
Celeste Schroeder
Spectacular! Amazing! So totally worth the drive & breathless trek up the path. Stay for the sunset if you can. Yes the temps are way lower than lower areas. It was 27F when we left the park but mid 40s when we returned to Asheville. Take the Balsam Nature Trail if you can. Just completely serene. There are a few off-trail-trailways that could put you face to face with wildlife, just be aware. Update: so 4 days after our 1st visit just had to go again. The 1st day we had up to 80 mile visibility according to the ranger. Today: 50 feet? But still amazing & beautiful. They closed the park AND part of the Blue Ridge Parkway because it decided to get cold while raining. Yeah, we got kicked out! Lol! But definitely for our safety. Thank you to all the rangers who made sure we & the other visitors got out safely before closing the park. And telling my husband how to drive safely in the SNOW!
Tommy Diffin
This was my first stop in my little weekend mountain adventure, and let me just say it's gorgeous here. All of the overlooks, and the mist really made it feel so much better, the pine trees aesthetics were made all the better by the mist. The drive up the side was also amazing, all of the cabins and little streams/creeks. When at the summit always dress warmly, it was a decent temperature when we were at the parking lot but the summit was like 10 degrees colder if not 20, I recommend this adventure to anybody who just wants to relax while still being near the top of a mountain
Dylan Kreutzer
Absolutely gorgeous hiking trails
David Riggleman
As the highest peak east of the Mississippi, Mount Mitchell offers amazing 360 degree views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The path to the top is just a short (albeit somewhat steep) walk up a paved path. The signage on top is great and shows you the name of other mountain peaks for each direction that you are facing. The nature trail, a short hike less than mile that starts and end from the parking lot, was also surprisingly better than expected at providing a diverse ecosystem that reminded me a bit of being the Pacific Northwest.
Mariah McClendon
Beautiful scenery. Well worth the curvy ride up to the top. We went to the top parking lot and the short walk up to the summit was steep but worth it. Paved trail and signs to explain what you were looking at.
Stefanie Owens
Great tourist attraction. Crowded at the top. The trail itself is moderately to heavily trafficked. In the winter the ice is beautiful. 4 stars because the summit is man built.
Kendra Reese
I hiked to the summit from the park office using the old Mitchell trail (2 miles one way). Somehow this hike is just as difficult coming back as it was going up. Lots of loose rocks and roots, so watch your step. But, it was well worth the effort. Extrodinary views and avoided the crowds with this trail.
Ray
The views from the summit are just amazing. The trails are also very fun. You have many options in terms of the trail difficulty and length which makes any family hike worth while. Personally the Old Mitchell trail is my favorite.
Kyle Zobel
A beautiful place with amazing views and hiking trails. An easy ascent to the summit is available for everyone including handicapped patrons or you can park lower and make a more traditional climb.
Nirmal Krishnan
Beautiful place. But it was foggy when we visited. Nice overlook deck. Small Museum, Shop, Restrooms, Restaurants, Spacious Parking lots and so on.
Hay
Visited this peak on the first of the year! Such a beautiful park with amazing views!! Wish we could have camped but the campground was full. Maybe if we decide to come back we will make prior plans would have been really gorgeous. Definitely stop if you can, we did not have to pay a fee though we only arrived one hour before closing so no one was around to answer any questions. Well worth the long drive. Even with the parkway being closed to Asheville it was worth it. If you are traveling make sure to check the parkway real time closures on google. You can find the website that has the map of all the closures.
Glory Cone
Beautiful overlook, when the clouds allow a view. MUCH colder at this elevation than lower levels. It's free, and that's awesome too!
Greg Setzer
Tallest mountain on the East Coast east of the Mississippi. Has a State Park campground that's great but no showers. But you better reserve your space six months in advance. Only nine tent sites.
Jonathan Alonso
Bit of a climb but the observation tower is amazing and you can see everything! Lots of different hiking trails to choose as well, very peaceful.
Marissa Castillo
The view was amazing. Was full of snow and very cold. It was worth it though. We went through the black mountain campground.
Ketaki Toye
Its a short hike from the parking lot. You can drive up the mountain to a parking lot and then walk up a steep incline to the observation deck. The summit gives you 360 degree panoramic views of the mountains. The views are incredible. However, you can expect to be in clouds/fog at least half the time. Definite temperature drop. Light jacket recommended. There is a nice restaurant with scenic views and a decent menu about a half mile from the park entrance.
Mai Vang
The hike to the top is not strenuous, as there is a paved walkway. The view from the top is amazing! I enjoyed a great night pack in camping and then hiking to the summit in the morning. Go visit Mt. Mitchell!
Pamela Leonard
The view! I had told my husband for years I wanted to go up high so I could see below and he could not have found a better place! The hike to the summit is steep but manageable for All ages as it's paved and kept up. If you are ever in this area I highly recommend you walk up. 360* view of our beautiful mountains!
Robert Brady
Never travelled down the Blue Ridge Parkway before. Now I know what I've been missing. Awesome three day journey with unforgettable sights. And the peak is the highest ready if the Mississippi!
Samantha Churilla
We came before k in the winter and completely missed out on the tower lookout. The hill is steep, but completely doable with a stroller it wheel chair. The sights at the top are worth the zig zag drive up, lookout for wild life along the way as we almost got a turkey.
Speedi Gonzalez
Love Mt Mitchell. Disappointed it was mostly shut down. But, you come to visit the summit and view the beauty. Its really beautiful especially if it is a clear day.
Katie R
Gorgeous state park. A must see if in Asheville or close by. There is a handicap accessible 360° viewing platform to view for miles and miles atop the highest point East of the Misissippi. During the peak season if you need help up the paved trail (to the top of the viewing platform) a special UTV/utility task vehicle is available to take you to the top... just ask at the snack stand or in the museam. I have a heart condition and greatly enjoy the consideration and help up. There is a small museam/gift shop, snack stand, restaurant, public bathrooms, countless trails, and picnic areas available. It is a 20+ year family tradition of ours to visit every year and are never disappointed, even on cloudy days with limited visibility the clouds are stunning.
Dustin Moore
This was a great spot. Absolutely beautiful views and great hikes. We did the Old Mitchell loop trail and there were pieces that were easy or beginner level, and there were pieces that were actually hard. Some of the areas were very rocky and required some climbing and work. There are so many areas to hike and views to see I think you could frequent this place and not see then end of it for a year (maybe a bit exaggerated lol).
Sue McQueen
Highest elevation east of the Mississippi River! Great views on clear days. Also fun when the clouds are below the summit. Several trails in area including Balsam Fir trail and the Mountain to Sea trail. Awesome hikes and views.
Cel St.Pierre
Love being in the "high country" and visiting the highest point on the Blue Ridge Mountains, east of the Mississippi, Mt. Mitchell. Great museums dedicated to the story of Elijah Mitchell, story of the Frazier Firs, high country wildlife and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is primitive camping, lots of hiking trails and a lodge-style restaurant (closes for the winter).
Paul Sheller
Nice drive up, a lovely walk up to the summit and beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Juan Frank
We didn't have much time to look around since the night was coming up fast, but the views are awesome, on our way up, we cross a grown black bear and a handful of young male deers and like 10 females. The whole park it's something that one day we would like to hike to really appreciate the beauty of nature.
Hopes .02Cents
Beautiful scenery and it's FREE!!!! if you're looking for a family friendly free thing to do with your kiddos, take them on a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Pack your own snacks and drinks and the only thing you'll have to pay for is gas! Even though gas is pricey at the moment, it is well worth the drive. There are so many sites to pull over and take beautiful, breath- taking photos and then drive on up to the highest elevation this side of the Mississippi! You won't regret it!
John Nolan
Fun little hike (300 yards) up a paved path to the summit. When the weather is cool, it's an easy trek, even for an inexperienced (read out of shape) hiker. Views are spectacular.
Andrea K
Look out point has great views and there are some hiking trails nearby. Gift shop is currently closed and the portable bathrooms were a mess, really gross. If you are driving by and want to use the restrooms here - don't. Other than that, views are worth the climb.
Marcel Gutierrez
Wow what can I say,we felt like we were on top of the world. If in the area you must stop, amazing, gorgeous views, once to the top by car it's still another 300 to 500 foot steep walk so just be prepared for that but so worth it !! Area was under construction so not sure what amenities there are
margie lavina
Drove most of the way in the clouds..what an adventure! The forest on the walk up to the top was beautiful. Love every minute!
JOSEPH GUMENY
Very crowded this time of year due to peaking fall foliage. The Rangers have to close the entrance periodically. I was blessed to get in with no wait. Absolutely beautiful place. Many really cool hiking trails! Short walk to the top from parking area. Port O potties all around, no waiting. Restrooms at the visitor center. Very interesting history about Mr. Mitchell, for whom the peak is named. Highest East of the Mississippi.
Daniel Smith
Truly breathtaking! There are trails for every level of experience and helpful staff throughout! Big thanks to "Nat" who was knowledgeable and very helpful in providing so much insight!
Piotr Kalinowski
Mount Mitchell State Park is basically the same as Mount Mitchell so look for more information there. But anyway, you will have a nice ride to the top. It looks pretty in the Fall but it may be even prettier in the summer. Just in case, take a wind coat with you.
Roger Dalton
Amazing view! Worth the trip up the mountain. The top is close to the parking lot but it is a steep climb. Just take it slow and the view is worth the effort.
Nikhil Kulkarni
It was lovely to go there in the morning. It was little chilly there in August.
Its the highest peak in US east of Mississippi.
The drive is enthralling.
Lauren Holladay
Absolutely beautiful driving up. A lot of fog at the summit in July, but the drive up is stunning. Lots of places to pull over and take pictures.
Veronica Ureña
Steep but very short trail to the top. Stayed for sunset and it was amazing. Pet friendly. A lot of other small trails nearby to explore with neat features. Didn't have time to check out the restaurant but I may have to next time!
linda nance
Awesome place to visit especially now n October. The mountains are beautiful.
Josie Reyes
This Mountain is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I'm a scardy cat and i went ALL the way up this mountain like a champ you will not regret it the views are breathtaking❤🗻 …
Josh Snipes
This park has been a part of my life since I came up from Florida at 15 with a church scout group and hiked bottom to top in December! I bring my kids here to remind them that their place in the world is profound, and to help teach em.
Be conscious of hours of operation and capacity. Last Saturday we had to wait to enter due to Rangers keeping the capacity very strictly.
becky spearman
One of our favorite places! Beautiful views. Christmas trees growing all around. We have also hiked this entire mountain, which was a workout, for sure. We like camping here. We love everything about this place.
Andrew David
Very cool place. Luckily we went during the slow season as I understand that it can get crazy busy during the summer months.
The rangers are fantastically friendly and informative. At the peak, there is a two tiered parking area. You can walk up a paved path or you can take a 3/4 mile "nature walk" where there are rocks and roots to climb over.
The view at the top is incredible. Unfortunately, we went when there was some smoke in the air but nonetheless, great views.
The drive up is quite pretty too. Be cautious, the rangers are really strict about adhering to the speed limit. (At the time of this review, the limit is 25mph)
Erica Jo Byers Pelton
Beautiful place to check out. You can walk up to the very top of the mountain that puts you at the highest elevation east of the Mississippi river! It is beautiful out! They also have camping and trails to hike! They have a nice gift shop and restaurant to eat at. The view from the restaurant is beautiful if you are able to sit next to the windows and the food is great! The country fried steak was amazing!
Diane Cunningham
Beautiful scenery. They hike to the top says 300 yards but it is straight up. Steep.
Jane Eustice
Mt. Mitchell has beautiful vistas and gorgeous trails. My favorite trail is the balsam trail. It is a short trail but the scent of the balsam trees and the cool breeze blowing through the trees makes it a peaceful walk in the woods.
Cindy Turner
Lived in the area for over 5 years, and it was my first visit. It was a bit cloudy and rainy, but beautiful and cool. Please go.
Sue Warren
Always a great walk to the observation. Not very long but steep. Temps drop drastically at that elevation, be sure to bring a jacket! 95 at the base, 59 at the summit!
Rajat Singh
Very nice panoramic view from the summit. Interesting facts about why some trees look the way they are.
Lynanne Lawhead
This is a location of historical value in how people, community and state came together to save and protect it for generations to see and Enjoy! It's off the Blue Ridge Parkway and has several stops to see surrounding areas including a restaurant until you reach the final parking lot. Then if able and willing one can walk the additional 300 feet to the summit. There are rest stops going up to the summit if one has difficulty walking and needs a rest. Worth seeing!
JEM ADV
Beautiful landscape, vista's. Most places above 5-6k elevations, cooler weather. (Mid. July low 50's overnight). Some people experience elevation sickness if exerting energy due to less oxygen. Restaurant and summit buildings closed for renovation. Primitive campground & restroom very well kept. If towing trailer, drop it at Restaurant parking lot, auto parking space limited. Mtn. Hiking trails are moderate to extreme, not maintained walking trails. No cell service in most areas. Some AT&T but no Verizon. Nice quiet place to visit during the week. Weekends are busy. PS: NO food within 20-30 min. drive if restaurant is closed. I've traveled the entire USA and feel the Blue Ridge Parkway areas are some of the most beautiful. Also a favorite scenic motorcycle ride. Enjoy!
Karen Man
The nature walk is really a treat. Don’t just go to the summit and back to your car. There are so many in and out trails to also explore here
Danielle Stewart
Beautiful place to visit and the ride up there on the Blue Ridge Parkway has so many great views to stop and look at
Caitlin Clem
The views were amazing and the employees we encountered were friendly. We stopped at the restaurant and ordered alfredo and meatloaf. While the food was edible, I would not recommend either of these dishes, as they didn't really have much flavor. The toast that came with the alfredo and the cornbread that came with the meatloaf were both good, so maybe their sandwiches are better. The servers also seemed to be all over the place and our waitress seemed lost when I asked about the base for the bbq sauce. We really enjoyed the visit overall, but I would skip the restaurant in the future.
Bethany Robinson
Another bucket list!
One of the most beautiful panoramic views ever.
The hike up is short and some may need to take it slow but so worth it.
It’s paved and easily accessible. W/C accessible.
Heath Hatcher
We basically took the Blue Ridge Parkway from Roanoke to Asheville. Mt Mitchell was quite the highlight of an amazing day on high. Unfortunately the viewing deck was closed but the view was still quite impressive.
Macky Kyle
Always a great place to go. The vistas are beautiful from the observation deck, which is only 300 yards from the parking lot. The path is paved and stroller friendly.
Christopher Carter
Wonderful facilities to summit the tallest peak east of the Mississippi river! Yes, it's a 900 ft long sidewalk! Wonderful 360 degree view with storyboards at the compass points to tell you what you are looking at. Large parking lot.
cheryl stoner
Best place to camp if you want to get away from the summer heat. Mid July temperature 70 day 50 at night
Mubarak Alhassan
The drive up is spectacular. Great hikes up there as well. Worth your while … no regrets !
To Find and Be Found
We tackled part of the Deep Gap Trail - and what a challenge it was! We quickly understood why people who do the whole trail do it in two days and camp overnight. There are some truly challenging areas of terrain and at some points the trail is just rocks thay you'll need to climb down a bit. Definitely worth the views. Next time we might pack a sleeping bag!
Tammy Betterton
Mount Mitchell was cold today! November 22nd. The temperature was 26 degrees with freezing fog. My mother was not comfortable at the least but she was a good sport.
Eva T
You've got to come if you are close by, the highest peak on this side of the Mississippi! You get to the top parking and walk a short, steep, paved to the very top. Great views depending on the weather. And you can have a snack or sandwiches (although those go fast) at the parking lot, small building, stand type. No place inside to seat when we were there although it seemed it'd be a possibility. Only porta potties.
John Weirick
Excellent hiking trails and views of Blue Ridge Mountains. There are a cluster of campsites that are a little separated from the main trailheads and have a nice bathroom with running water, so this is luxury camping material. Having lived in Oregon before moving to the South, this park was where I went to feel the comfort of mountains and different terrain.
George Lawrence
It was amazing breath taking views easy to get to if ur in the aria don't pass it up

Easily accessible, with paved roads and parking lots near Mount Mitchell's summit. The overlook has excellent views of the Black Mountains. To top it off, the park has free entry! You should absolutely stop by the park while on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Be sure to bring a coat, though.
James Smith, The Quiet Hiker
One of my favorite state parks. Great hiking trails. Among the finest scenery in NC.
Deb Jones
2022 Update
Awesome visit July 24, 2020...53° Cloudy... Cool...beautiful. Love NC Blue Ridge mountains!!!!!😍
FYI, this was a TOP vacation for families in 2021..
Amazing views, photo ops....
Tanya Ledford
Mount Mitchell is a great place to visit. It's a fairly easy, paved hike from the parking lot to the top. In a few weeks, the leaves will be turning, and it will be a sight to behold.
JFlex
Deep Gap Trail is a moderate, but worthwhile hike for amazing views from several nearby mountain peaks.
M B
I absolutely love coming here in the fall! I highly recommend driving up. Avoid the restaurant at the top the food is not that great. I would say you are better off bringing a picnic! There is a short distance hill climb to the platform area where you can view the mountains which it is also wheelchair accessible but it is a steep hill to climb.
When the weather is nice the view is unbelievable! You get a full 360 degree view of the mountains that surrounds you! The air is so refreshing up there and you will meet people from all over! They do have a small snack stand that has drinks and snacks as well as bathrooms.
Shana McCurry
So beautiful. Amazing views. Friendly, helpful staff. The hike up to the top is a short walk from the parking area. Nice picnic areas. Crowded on Saturday morning. And, PLEASE people, don't let your dog poop in the walking areas! Yuck!
DarthRavage07
I've been there on a clear day to see it all the sights and view of sunset but also need to have be stuck in the clouds and see what that look like as the clouds keep moving by rapidly fast!
Terri DeLuca-MacMahon
Absolutely fabulous breathtaking views a short walk from the parking lot and the drive there if beautiful!
John Mazzell
Wow. Mount Mitchell is amazing and I highly recommend visiting. The views are breathtaking. The smell of the fir trees that grow at this altitude is incredible and remind me of Christmas. I could spend all day on mount Mitchell.
Amber Roudebush
Absolutely beautiful!!! Even on cloudy weather days.
Cody Eagle
The trail to summit was nice and simple to find. Plus that nature hike up there was nice to escape from the windy weather up there today.
Lili Rehak
Stunning views from atop Mt. Mitchell. Go early for clear views. Drive up & short walk to the summit. Also a tranquil nature trail with info boards. Great picnic area with spectacular views. 10/10
Rachel Shannon
Absolutely gorgeous hike along the Balsam Trail. Very short and easy, and you will feel like you're in the magical realm of the Fae. Mushrooms and moss cover everything! Just a tip- there's no gas along the Blue Ridge Pkwy or up the mountain, so make sure to fill up beforehand. Also cell service is very patchy so plan accordingly. It's about 15-20 degrees cooler at the summit than down below, so you will want a jacket even in summer.
KP (Juniper)
Beautiful monument! So glad I made the last minute decision to drive up here. Even with the cold wind and clouds it was beautiful!
Zak al-Shami
Warning: Douglas falls is not for the fairweather hiker. There is a half mile trail and a 3.8 strenuous trail to the waterfall. Excellent view and not a bad diner at the very top with overlooks along the drive
Megan Perkins Jacobs
A truly amazing state park. It's an easy up and down with many more difficult hikes. The view goes on for miles and it's a really special place for many.
Dogs are allowed, although we did see some others not pick up after their dog. Please pick up after your dog if you bring them!
Michael Lipkin
I could spend all day here viewing the wilderness. The weather was 20-30 degrees cooler than at the base. Very many visitors with friendly dogs. Nice little concession stand available near bottom of trail to the viewing deck.
Fresh air, beautiful views in this late July.
Deana Trenchard
This was an amazing find. Beautiful, breathe taking scenery. We cannot wait to return in the fall!
Andrew Vickers
If you are in good weather the views are fantastic. Good maps at the top - table D'Orientation. Information centre and shop are good. You can get refreshments at the small store as well.
Delilah Fortner
Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain in NE United States is easily accessible. The road is well maintained. There are picnic tables, concession stand, bathrooms, hiking trails, and awesome views.
Ben Starkey
The hike up this mountain was incredible. From the campground it takes about 6 hours to get up and back. (13.4 miles) the roads that are closed in the winter are not clearly/accurately reflected by Google map results the automated phone message for the State Park or the website.
John Lockhart
Awesome views + gorgeous drive on the way up. Give yourself plenty of time - it does take at least 30 minutes to get to the top from any of the access roads.
Brooks Payne
Hike up the trail this morning. It was grueling. Be a aware that when they say "most difficult" it really is. Also, the top was really cloudy so you might not actually get a view.
Souvik Chatterjee
A great place to be. We expected a more cooler weather, being the highest point in this part. But the weather was warn and sunny. Although that gave us the chance to see clearly in all directions from the summit. Very clean and reaching the summit is very easy. Loved the place.
Chris Newsom
An amazing spring day offered beautiful weather to take in the 360º vista from the observation deck. We also took a short hike on the Balsam Nature Trail. It's a 20-25 minute hike with moderate difficulty. Wear appropriate shoes to negotiate the numerous roots and rocks on the path. The modest museum gives you some information on the geology and history of the peak and surrounding area. The gift shop opens around Memorial Day and was not open yet during our visit. Expect a crowd when you're there and several groups/bus tours.
Dee Sudebi
View is spectacular! If you are trolling around NC app Mountains, don’t forget to stop by at Mount Mitchell. One thing, your timing is everything while climbing up. You might end up getting to the top and all you see is cloudy and gloomy environment. Just wait for 10-15 minutes, the sky will clear and you will have breathtaking view and memory. Good luck going up there!!
Rahyne TMR
It's a steep climb to get up to the top.
So If you're not in shape, be prepared. Views are fantastic if it is not foggy or rainy.
Christy Kathke
They say it's about 20 degrees colder at the top than in the surrounding areas, and they're not kidding! Bundle up and take the short walk up to the top, the views are definitely worth it.
Unknown User
Beautiful hiking trails with incredible views! The woods smell like Christmas.
Alpha Wolf
Beautiful! Nice, clean location with easy access.
Steve Sherron
The highest peak in NC. You must go and enjoy the beauty. Plenty of parking. Food, gifts, family friendly. Easy to walk.
Julia Quackenbush
Awesome place! Very beautiful park , I loved hiking with my friend there
Michael Miller
Absolutely beautiful park! It's so incredible to see the mountains through the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was traveling with my family in the Asheville area and had to stop here. Unfortunately, at the summit viability was poor due to the fog and it rained almost the whole time we were here, but nonetheless, the experience was great and I hope to return sometime in the near future.
Do yourself a favor and check out this park and climb to the top of Mt. Mitchell. Even if you can't make it here specifically, there are some incredible views throughout Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Michelle
The views were mediocre to me. Not far to climb but very, very steep! No tp in portapotties so use bathrooms at first stop.
Dave Binderup
Beautiful ride up to the summit. Spectacular views! The facilities were clean and well maintained. I saw two rangers on duty, but there may have been more. It's a popular destination, and there is quite a bit of parking, maybe a 75~100ish spots.
Naomi Jeeter
It was an amazing escape from civilization. I can't wait to go back, since we didn't make it in time to check out the gift shop.
Clint Watkins
Great place to visit! Gorgeous Fall colors!
Crystal deLonge
The climb up to the top can be challenging if your not fit or use to such challenges. There are resting spots on your way up so you can stop periodically if need be. The view at the top is worth it though. It's absolutely breath taking!!! You can take your dog as well but it must be on a leash.
Shawn Schmid
My. Mitchell is a magical place—highest point east of the Mississippi! Don’t miss it. We will go back again when leaves change colors, in fall.
Chasity Atkinson
The view was absolutely beautiful
Airam Dato-on
We were in Asheville and learned that the highest peak east of the Mississippi River was Mount Mitchell and it was only an hour and a half away through the Blue Ridge so we had to see definitely add it to our itinerary in the last minute.
The drive alone was majestic but the views from the peak was well worth it too! The peak was not at all a bad hike from the car park. It's such an accessible peak for a good range of age groups. Would drive and climb again. 11 out of 10.
D. Knapp
Beautiful State Park with some stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains! Drive all the way to the top, or do one of the hikes. Its absolutely worth it! Also, don't forget to visit the little Museum. Its worthwhile.
Mike Trubey
Mount Mitchell is an awesome place to visit. The only drawback is that you better make sure you have enough gas to get down the mountain and to the next gas station which is a good 10 to 15 miles away.I got there as a sun had already gone down but I was treated to some cloud to cloud lightning all around the top and far enough away that I wasn't threatened by it.
Julie Decarie
Great place for anyone to visit! You can drive all the way up close to the top of Mt. Mitchell, then walk up to the viewing spot. Restaurant(with a fantastic view) open certain times of the year! Well taken care of! Worth visiting!
Eric Lorch
The views from here are amazing! They rival those of the more well-known national parks, and it's very accessible. You can drive all the way up to the last 300 yards, and entry and parking is free. There were a lot of gnats or some kind of bug, so wear pants or bug spray.
Cameron Fisher
The park had opened the day I visited (the website still said it was closed due to weather (it was early April). And I'm glad it opened!
A really enjoyable drive up the mountain to get there and at the top there is plenty of parking and an easy walk to the summit. At the top is a really nice raised observation platform with information about what you can see.
The view truly is 360 degrees and you can see a very long distance.
The entire observation platform is handicap accessible BUT the walk up (wide open paved concrete) and the ramp to the deck is rather steep. So it is accessible, but it's going to give you quite a workout if you're pushing a chair, or if you're wheeling your own chair up. I don't believe an electric chair would make it to the top bit I may be wrong (having never used one personally).
Jake Hofmann
Beautiful place with lots of trails and a nice concession stand to buy food and drink with a very friendly worker there.
Andrea Diaz
This place is breathtaking! I highly recommend it! I was traveling with a senior and she was able to walk from the parking lot to the lookout point. There is only one restaurant in the area, but the food is not great. I recommend you bring your own.
Cristobalina Moran
It was a steep easy (paved) hike up to the lookout, but once up there it was a great view.
Ken Shainker
Great place to visit for cooler temperatures, great views and excellent hiking
Dave Higgins
Great place to visit and hike. The visitor center was closed due to the virus, but the park is still open and has great views and fun for the family
Phillip Thalheimer
A test of skills against weather. It is cold and wet here. Rains most of the time and wind could get up high enough to blow your tent away. Dont let the sunny pictures fool you! The challenge is worth going to this NC area that is a Canadian rain forest. A different climate that often lives in a cold cloud in the summer and is a ice land during the winter. The rangers are informative and helpful.
Tank O'Holic
Did the 3.5 mile, 3500 ft. hike straight to the top to 6800 ft. Little crowded as we got to the top. Nice moderate hike up and down.
Jason Hartigan
Highest elevation on the East Coast. Great views and can drive all the way to the top, if hiking isn't your thing.
Robert Zandt
Great views, at that elevation you may find walking the trails and path to the summit a bit of work. I was fine but others on the path found 6600+ feet and lower O2 a surprise. Store looks like it hasn't been open in years even though ads and radio channel say otherwise. Also rest rooms are porta potties. Most of the park system seems to be same with closed restrooms.
Master Anglin
A very beautiful place. On a clear day you can see on and on. One of my favorite things is the pine tree smell. It smells just like Christmas. It's changed a lot since I had been there years ago. The trees have grown back and they built a new tower for observation. If you go take some binoculars you'd be surprised how far can you can see. And keep in mind it's probably about 15 to 20° cooler there than the surrounding area.
Andrew
Nice place very easy to walk up for those who don't get around that easily. Not much parking tho and very busy in the fall
BluesPrinting NY
Beautiful views, easy walk up after a steep 5 mile drive
Martin Brossman
Great park especially if you go to the top of Mount Mitchell for the view.
Ryan Arruzza
We ended up heading to Mount Mitchell last minute well taking the ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's definitely worth the small detour. Great views and there is an easy path to the top. They also have a food stand and a resturant, as well a gift shop. If you are in the area it's definitely worth the stop, especially if it's a nice day. You can see for miles.
Clark Singleton
Clouds, rain & mist on visit, so no views from the top, but walking trails were well maintained & marked.
Robert Flint
Great place to visit and hike. The hike from Black Mountain Campground is challenging with plenty of good views. Be cautious of rocks and roots.
Rory Martin
We went for the centennial celebration, and it was so much fun! The walk to the summit is steep, but the path is paved and there are benches along the way. The gift shop and museum are lovely. There are plenty of trails to hike, and the views are breathtaking. Mt. Mitchell makes for a fantastic family outing.
Laura Clingman
The highest point east of the Mississippi, I am told. The views are outstanding! And the ride on a motorcycle? It's a dance... :-)
HPad (Hunter)
Still a great and must see if you in the area! Haven't been here in about 10 years. And still impressed!
Patrick “pat” McCarthy
Beautiful mountain top highest point east of the Mississippi River Veiws unbelievable everyone needs to go
yaz da
If you visit this place it would be one of the most unforgettable moments in your life!
Sean Greco
Highest Peak East of the Mississippi! Lovely State Park that cost nothing! Cool observation plaza, snack bar, and very neat trails with unique Geography. What a great way to spend a day!
Cruz Leirys Ygnacio
A beautiful place to enjoy nature. A great hiking place.
Richard Marin
If you want to see a view ?see it from the highest point in a directions. And that will be here .
Brett Ball
This would have been a better experience had it not so foggy (see picture) but it was still neat to see and do. I saw a review talking about how there is essentially no hike to the top, but that isn’t completely true. You’ve got to walk 300 yards all up hill to get to the top so this could still be slightly difficult for people who are older and/or significantly out of shape. Also, no drones are allowed 🤨
Tony Russell
Beautiful place. Must see and got to hit the trails and check the summit point
John Guenther
High mountain with great views. The tallest peak east of the Mississippi. Make sure your hover round is charged before embarking to the top or you won't make it and then what are you going to do? Nobody is going to push Auntie Bertha to the top. Be wary of the birds... definitely government spies.
Abhishek Kotagiri
Best place but gotta be a planned one or else the hike experience will be disaster
John Forbes
The Black Mountain Crest Trail via the Deep Gap access is incredible, and the views are always to die for.
Philip Waidner
Highest point in the US east of the Mississippi! Reason enough to go, but it's also a very easy walk from the parking lot to the top, so it's a great stop while driving the Parkway. While you can drive, it's also a fun and difficult hike to the top from the bottom if that's what you're looking for. Definitely check the weather though, because it can be much colder and windier this high up.
Richard Guzak
Very cool place. You can hike or drive up from visitors center. Hiking is somewhat difficult and steep. View is spectacular. Go there.
Jerry Marshall
Beautiful park, take your time with the climb to the top, it can be a little steep in places, but you'll do fine, well worth the trip on a clear day
Bill Allen
It has been many years since we last here. It was great then and there have been many improvements. The picnic area is one great example. The many tables are well spaced out and a good number of them have great views. There is currently building construction going on that I am sure will improve the visitor experience.
Natalie Thomas
I went to the park for the first time today. It was a beautiful drive up. Be prepared for rain if you walk to the summet. It's well worth it.
Danny Goode (GoodePhoto)
I usually visit about three times a year, but this was first time I stayed at summit for sunset.
Teak Lastein
Beautiful time. Was mystical vibes and super cool with the clouds coming and going. Pics dont do it justice. Super awesome time!!!
Corinne Lattimer
Beautiful nature and light walking at this location.
Sherlene Wilson
Beautiful view
Follow me on TikTok Leave me a comment and tell me what you see in the clouds…
Aimee Lim
This is a nice area to spend hiking. The view is worth.
Lindsey Dockum
Beautiful area, great hike. This time was too foggy to see anything but still worth the trip,!!!
Terri Austin
Absolutely stunning views from the top! You can drive almost all the way to the summit, and the path to the summit is paved.
John Erik Rasmussen
Picturesque views and staff are really friendly and offer lots of cool history and knowledge about the area. Definitely a must to visit
Jennifer Shelton
As our luck would have it, it was such a foggy day when we went, so visibility was bad. However, the steep trail was not as tough as Clingman's Done in Tennessee.
Jennifer Sullivan
Nice place for an outing with family.
Ingrid Petry
It was my first snow experience ever and it was MAGICAL! It was cloudy the first time I went, so I definitely recommend checking the mountain's weather.
The little cafe they have before walking to the observatory has the best vanilla coffee and the fella making it was super nice and helpful!
mike bernard
At 6,684 ft. It is the highest elevation east of the Mississippi. They have camping, an educational center and free parking.
Tune in to 1630 am and get information about what is happening at the park.
Patrick Gregory
Great ride up to the peak. Beautiful scenic pull overs along the way.
aaron miller
Neat place to stop. Has easy or hard trails depending on your desires. The view is hit or miss due to weather conditions. As of June 5 2020 most things are closed including the observation tower
Paul Yates
Not my first time but a really cool place. Definitely worth your time if you are in the area. Museum and concession stand were not open - victims of Covid i assume.
Debbie DebTarHeelGirl
Worth the steep cemented trail, they do have benches in resting points along the way so don't let that stop you from getting to the top and seeing a part of Natural History! The views are great and north, south, east, and west are depicted on the signs with pinpoints of various mountain ranges and names of peaks.
Ida Villarreal
It was a great day for a climb. Views from the top made the climb worth it. It was breathtaking.
P Brown
Great place to visit if in or around Asheville! Plenty of parking and restrooms also!
Francisco A. “Paco” Jimenez
This is the second time I go all the way to Mt. Mitchell. Worth the drive. Plus, the scenery on your way there is beautiful!
Wyatt Elkins
Beautiful view and challenging hiking trails. We went to the free camping area which was in a bear sanctuary about 10 or so miles from where you park. It's a lot of tough work to get all your equipment down there but it's well worth it for the experience. One man who was working with his crew somewhat close to the camping area was kind enough to give us a ride in his truck to the summit and assured us that no one has had any encounters with bears for a very long time haha. Great experience in a beautiful spot.
Beth Hedges
Absolutely mind blowing. The view is incredible, you really will feel on top of the world. Only downfall is how busy it gets.
Franklin M Halsey Jr
Loved this place!! Was flying to Switzerland for honeymoon, but 9/11 grounded all flights. My first time to Mt Mitchell was, hiking up on last minute change in plans for honeymoon. The adventure was even more amazing than the views
Lytton Martin
Stunning views and 10-20 degrees cooler than Asheville. Definitely worth the trip and best of all there is no admission fee!
david gargani
made it up in my ti lite manual wheelchair felt awesome! its steep the final 200 yards but its doable take breaks and pace yourself if your in a manual wheelchair like me.
Rahul Panchal
Nice place ... we visited during memorial so was little foggy but place got good views ... must visit
E K
Very beautiful view and a easy 320 yard walk. 360 degree views
Chad David
Great hike and the view is fantastic at the top! Totally worth the hike.
Z L
It’s a nice view from the top but I agree that the overlooks on the way provide an equally nice view in the way. My wife was extremely annoyed that the gift shop and restaurant was closed, so we didn’t hike very far. It should be clearly indicated online and before even undertaking the slow windy road that everything is closed for the season? Spring is the best time to visit parks, not summer! Also it’s impossible to get to the park without encountering obnoxious cyclists that won’t move. The line of sight is bad, so passing them is dangerous. Why are they allowed on the road to the park?! A bicycle is too slow to share the road with cars, many which are huge gas guzzlers who drive like mad.
Master Mind
Very beautiful place must everyone visit at least once good hiking trail and nice place visit with family
Jose Rubio
Drive to the top and then walk a few hundred feet to the observation area. There's a snack bar and a gift shop. Much colder than at the blue ridge parkway below
Joe Griffin
Great park with filled trials and most importantly the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Word to the wise. They don't have actually restrooms, but they do have portable bathrooms, so plan accordingly.
Lukáš Volenec
Great place for a trip
Jd Adams
Highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River. I haven't been here in over a decade, but glad I made it here again.
Gil Marcondes
Love this place. Found many interesting trails and fresh air.
Tutu
The views of all points we stopped at was break taken. I never made it to the top which is 300 more feet straight up, due to bad knees.
Akshay Aravind
Awesome place
The drive to the top is one of the best. Plenty of parking on the peak.
If possible, then definitely try hiking on the many trails from the peak.
I did the mount Mitchell loop trail which is around 6 miles. It is a hard hike and takes around 5 hours. Recommend to do anti-clockwise
There is a flat area as a horse carriage road. Thoroughly enjoyed this part.
The highest point is just a short walk from the parking lot.
Krystal Hill
A beautiful view at the top! The pathway up to the viewing tower is at a bit of steep angle. It's not too bad but it could be difficult for some. That being said the view from the top it's worth it!
David Mahaffey
Very nice State Park with amazing views on clear day!
Mark DiGiacomo
Tallest mountain east of the Mississippi and amazing! Almost more spectacular with storms.
Gayan N. Wimalarathna
Breathtaking mountains view at multiple look outs.
Kevin Koontz
Great place to hike and great views. Parking can be limited in some areas.
Tony Hauser (Velogoat)
Rode up on the bicycle. Tough approach, but worthwhile effort. Great views! Great trails! Well stocked concessions. Helpful state park rangers and employees.
Karen Thomas
What's not to love about this iconic North Carolina destination? We visited on a glorious day with clear, blue skies.
Esteban de la Ossa
An amazing hike up the mountain if you have a little bit of courage.
Petra S
Wonderful nature, great scenery even with fog and ice
Tony
Always fun to hike to the top, its so difficult just due to the lower amount of available oxygen. But the views are incredible. Try to hit it up during a sunset one evening
Bradford H Turnow
Great trip. Worth the drive which was about an hour. Once to the top, the views are great. The restaurant was closed when we visited so that was a bummer. In all, we spent about an hour at the top. That includes parking and then walking around and then up the 300 yards to the observation deck. A good trip for an hour or two, longer if you are going to go hiking or biking.
bob augenstein
It's kind of like Hobbit land up there. A completely different look to the landscape at 6600 feet. When we were on top it was 52 degrees and when we got back to the interstate down below it was 80 degrees. Be prepared to be cool.
Kimberly Drexel
Beautiful views and great hiking trails. It can be 10 to 20 degrees colder at this elevation than you'd experience at a lower level so be sure to bring a jacket!
Crystal Temple
Absolutely Beautiful! The leaves are changing and it is stunning!
Sam Lee
Incredible views and hiking trails. Head straight to the trail towards the second highest point east of the Mississippi, well-manicured and reminiscent of a Japanese forest. Ridgetop hiking at its finest.
Walker Hart
Beutiful Park but facilities closed due to Covid. Restrooms open.
Michael Freas (Michael Freas Photography)
Great views, well maintained trail
Mark Watson
A beautiful place to visit and walk trails in the mountains. Views are worth it!
Jezail June
A beautiful sunny day in November made for a perfect road trip and hike.
Kelly Flowers
Even when it's cloudy it's still beautiful up here. So worth the drive!
Julie Crawford
Incredible view! Absolutely love this place. Can't wait to go back. Hike it or drive it! The museum and gift shop are great too.
Douglas Cole
Enjoyed the time on Mount Mitchell. The views from the observation platform were beautiful, cloudly and Temps in 50's made it nice for hiking 🚶♂️on some of the many trails. Always great to be in our mountain's. …
Joseph Miller
A nice place to visit and spend a little time. A couple trails and the viewing tower are a must. Ive been coming here 30+ years and its a good time no matter the weather. Highest peak east of the Mississippi river. Nice little gift shop and museum. Great for pictures any day of the week all year long.
Farmlife Something
One of the most beautiful places to drive on the east coast. Love!
Forrest Schauer
This was a very cool experience.
Alex J
Steep climb to get to the peak, but amazing view. One of the trails about halfway up the path to the peak was beautiful. Definitely recommend, and the drive through the parkway to reach it was breathtaking
Christelle Marsh
6,000 above sea level. The most exquisite mountain views in NC. Worth a visit for sure!
Benjamin Robertson
Amazing place to visit and hike!
Toni McCance
Although it was raining and chilly when we visited, it was still worth the trip. I was a bit disappointed that the gift shop was closed for business.
Shanda Crowe
The nature trail hike is AMAZING! We spent so much time just checking out all the cool plants and fungi.
cristian alfaro
Beautiful place to visit very magical. We just moved from Colorado and although not as big as the Rockies the experience is just as serene
Roger Broadway
Beautiful views. Good place for sunset pictures. It's a fairly easy walk to the top from parking lot. Bathrooms available.
Jack Paxton
Serenity now serenity now serenity now! This place does it for me both beautiful and spiritual!
N Lainas
My son and I had a great time on Mt. Mitchell stayed for two nights met up with a hunting dog that hung around with us for a day great place to camp and get away
Ting Zhao
Awesome view. An easy walk to the top.
Matthew Goczalk
Some nice hikes from here, can get a little difficult if you do the Old Mitchell trail. Peaceful wildlife here.
Malinda Darrel -Lukens
Very Cool place on a hot summer day trip. The weather up there is crisp Canadian. Much colder than just below on the parkway. So bring a jacket or wind breaker.
leila0908
The walk up was a little exhausting, but nothing that is not doable. Once you're at the top and you get to see everything...AMAZING. such a beautiful view
Chris Frantz
Great views even on a overcast day. Really gives you a sense of how beautiful and amazing nature can be without civilization getting in the way.
Kelly
So lovely and simple. Perfect for a nice drive plus several, good hikes
Ricardo Corleone
Wow what a great view from the summit! Only a 300 yard hike from the parking lot to get there, but it's a bit of a steep climb so maybe more strenuous than you would anticipate. Well worth the walk though. Park is very well maintained.
Warfather1964
So beautiful. Great views, picnic area and trails. Snack shack. Bathroom. Lots of parking. Check the weather though. You can get sockt in.
Todd Jackson
Really nice place that everyone should visit. Will maintained and a great road on the way up. We especially enjoyed the side hike to Mount Craig. Recommended if you want to get slightly off the beaten path where the rest of the crowds are
Rachel Roberts
Amazing views, crisp air, dog friendly- what more could you ask for?
Brenda Busshart
We went on Thanksgiving Day! Had a Wonderful time, only 42 degrees and sunny sky's!!
Dana Cole
One of my favorite places. The views are amazing.
Ken Hyer
Beautiful view at the peak, with good facilities and a nice variety of trails. The nature walk is a nice light walk through the woods, while the Deep Gap trail is a bit more strenuous as it takes you down from Mount Mitchell and up to Mount Craig (and beyond if you wish). Also a great picnic area with amazing views.
Bambi Cooper
Beautiful! The smell of the Fir trees is amazing.
Elaine Weikert
Love the drive! Beautiful breathtaking views and a wonderful place to hike.. Highest peak East of the Missisippi
Audrey Kramer
Great views, short, steep walk to summit
Daniel Morbitzer
We really enjoyed the picnic area was really nice! We lived having lunch with a view. It was busy for Memorial Day, but always worth the effort. expert tip: We have come a couple previous times and it can be really cloudy. Check the weather first. Otherwise you can't see anything and will be in the clouds literally.
Kirsten Hanson
Beautiful spot with a nice little hike to a gorgeous 360° lookout.
Steve Barger
My granddaughters an I loved our time there. Great place!
Urban Traveler
Truly beautiful. A great place for being in touch with nature👍🏻 …
Rebecca Herrin
The museum was interesting and the steep but short climb to the top was well kept. 360 degree view was nice. Worth the stop.
Toby M
Make sure you go to the peak on a clear day - the view is incredible
Alex A
We went early in the day and the view was phenomenal. It is quite colder up at the peak so be sure to bring something to keep warm. Had the observation deck to ourselves for a bit. Was an amazing experience!
Bill Midkiff
My favorite place to ride on Sundays. Good trails. Awesome views.
Joann Grosik
Beautiful area. The highest mountain in the eastern US. Very scary if afraid of heights.
Kristina Moore
Quite the walk to the point but well worth it

Nature's best on this side of the Mississippi. Fall Is the best time to visit. Breath taking views. Handicap accessible all the way to the top . Well done access for everyone. If you're in a wheelchair you can get to the top with some helping hands.
Motorized wheelchair accessible.

Absolutely breathtaking! Nice easy wall up to the peek and so beautiful. Clean and kept well taken care of. It is chilli so don't forget a sweater. If you do like I did, there is a gift shop that has some really cute ones you can buy. Reasonable prices. Staff very friendly. Well worth the trip.

Restrooms and such were closed when we were just there but the walk to the summit was all along a great paved path and not too terribly exhausting. Beautiful flowers and raspberries along the way. The views at the summit are definitely worth it!
