Reviews of Chugach State Park
Jack McCaslin
Beautiful expansive place to hike and explore. Oh the places you could go. Glaciers, snow capped peaks, breathtaking views, unexplored territory, and so much more. This is a truly unique state park. It is so fun to get beyond where most hikers even travel and to see new things. Ever changing, and takes my breath away every time I see something new.
Well Doggies
Beautiful State Park. There is none better in many people's estimation. From sea level to the mountain tops, the views are spectacular. You can get lost in your thoughts here, and if you don't watch out you might actually get lost for awhile.
Do not count on being able to get a cell signal if you go into this wilderness, even less so the further East you go into the Park. Weather can change suddenly, and can be deadly. Prepare well.
Kent English
Lots of trails to hike. The paths were packed snow but had lots of frozen deep footprints which made them a bit hazardous if you didn't watch your step.
Ciara V
Nice hike up with the most amazing views of Eklutna Lake. Parking gets busy quick, so try to get there before 9:00 for a spot. And they do have a little rental place for bikes and I think I saw kayaks as well. The paths are well marked and easy to follow.
Alexander Herlant
Unbelievable beauty, breathtaking and surreal beyond words. Must see for anyone in alaska.
Marlyn Fortune
Enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful autumn colors splashing the mountains, paddle in Eklutna Lake or hike he trails.
Add to the list of camping at the near by sites.
Middle of the week is more relaxing to avoid the overflow parking lot.
Bartosz Koszowski
Amazing mountains within Chugach State Park. Hundreds of miles of beautiful trails just in close proximity to Anchorage and other small towns in Alaska. You’ll find here everything from a path for an easy Sunday afternoon stroll with kids to advanced mountaineering adventures.
Robin Dern
We decided to take the Bear Mountain Trail to the peak and then traversed across a gorgeous ridge to come down along the Eklutna Mountain Trail. What a spectacular view! At the end of the Bear Mountain Trail you are standing high above Mirror Lake. Watching the float planes take off from so high up is lots of fun. The path is easy to follow and is carpeted with wildflowers. AllTrails said we hit over 3,000 feet of elevation gain from the lot, so be prepared for some steep stretches.
Beverly Mai
Was a fun hike to the waterfalls. Last part down to the falls is steep but worth it.
Joseph Gicewicz
Very vast state area. Many good hiking trails and hunting areas. Day use and overnight camping in certain areas. Great fun for people who enjoy the outdoors.
James Armstrong
Hemlock Burn mountain bike trail views at sunset.
Zee Cale (UK)
3rd largest park in America that covers almost half a million acres
Three day hiking at -25 degree.
There are at least 50 trekking tails in the state park, from East to hard, from easy sightseeing trails to adventurous ones.
There’s lots of wild berries when it is berry season.
Carry bear spray while doing hikes in summer and fall.
I had three-day hike in the state park.
Day one: Spent one day snowshoeing in the park, experience of lifetime
Day two: Hiking along the eagle river and in the forest, spectacular views of the frozen waterfall
Day three : Hiking along the ridge line, breath taking views of the wild snow mountain range.
And Saw three people parachuting. Crazily cool!!
Would definitely come back to do the hikes again in the summer and fall!
Love Alaska!

I think the pictures speak for themselves. OMG! the most beautiful sites I have ever been too. Wilderness-wise. Swans, clean BLUE skies, clear waters, untouched land. Wow! Great place to centre your zen.
Col Lan
The trails and nearby river a beautiful, but come prepared, they aren’t paved, and they’re often very muddy. Otherwise, worth a visit, especially considering it’s vicinity to Anchorage. The main waterfall is super pretty.
C.G. R.
CHUGACH IS AMAZING and bit's almost indescribable. It gives you an incredible respect for Mother Nature. The glaciers are melting at very rapid pace and sadly will be gone for future generations. Was blessed enough to get to see them up close on a guided ferry that takes you right up to the glacier. It's amazing and does you realize humans are mother natures worst enemies.
Sierra
Beautiful views and lots of wildlife. Heavy bear traffic so travel with bear spray and a weapon. Chilly at night because you’re up in the Mountains. Definitely wear layers. We went in September and it was beautiful.
Omar Ezzeldine
Great hike up to the top. We came in late August and we're lucky to have great weather. The food at the top was very good also, but that might be because I was so tired after the hike.
Mark Graci
Some shots may be from other parks. Beautiful area, will come back in a different season to see the changes
Aditya Narayanan
One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. It has hundreds of miles of trails weaving through spectacular, snow-capped mountains. The park's trails are diverse, ranging from the easy strolls at Eagle River Nature Center to the more strenuous Crow Pass Trail.
Doctor Kshama Mathur Garg
Whole ride from Anchorage to Whittier to Seward has breathtaking scenery. Area just before tunnel to Whittier and lake with floating glaciers must see!
Brad Brons
Peaceful place. So serene. If you need a get away... I would suggest this beautiful country drive.
[ren's review]
This park is a more wooded and forested hike. Many people claim there were bears/bear attacks here. I never knew prior, nor did I see any. There are multiple paths available to adventure through. I got off path and was lost at one point. But you will find a trail that will lead you back to the entrance. I wouldn't recommend hiking this park when sun is on the verge of setting because of how wooded this park is.
Becky Noyes
They're aren't to many places in the world where you can driving down the road and pull off one of the multiple scenic turn offs to see Beluga whales right from your vehicle! I definitely wasn't expecting to have such an opportunity! Outside of seeing Belugas, I hear this is also a very common spot to see Mountain Goats and Dall Sheep, although we weren't lucky enough to see then as well. The landscape is also very beautiful with mountains all around and coming right up to the road. The only thing I warn is that it is a very well-traveled road and people can sometimes pull off or back onto the road, so just be sure to travel with caution, maybe with a buddy or two so they can tell you when they see something cool and where the safe places to check them out are. I hope we get to go back someday!
Al Risden
I believe I was in the upper west side of the park. I traveled around Alaska in February so many of the noticeable spots were snow covered and this day wan't planned so I just got in the vehicle and drove. Google maps tracked me and I'm using that as a photo guide. I'll post some pictures and they should be close according to the time and day. Anyway - the views were amazing as were most of what I saw during this trip. The last two days were dedicated to Anchorage and the surrounding area.
Kinj Guha
Love this place. In the midst of forest, sea & hills. nature at it’s absolute best.
Steve D
The scenery alone is something to behold whether its summer, fall, winter, or spring. Each picture I take shows me something new each time. Alaska is the top state in my book to visit!!
Brandi Breslin
Gorgeous views and multiple wildlife sightings. In addition to the awe-inspiring scenic views around every turn, we saw 2 bears and 2 moose within the first hour.
Breanna Marshall
There's a bunch of places to go to in the park and different entrances, and they're all unique and there's a lot of interesting things to see. If you like waterfalls, there's a few different places to go (Thunderbird Falls (pictured) and McHugh Creek Day Use Area (front waterfall pictured (flowers)). There's also a bunch of different trails, including a 21-mile hike from Eagle River to Girdwood (Crow Pass Trail). The North Fork Eagle River Trail (picture) is an easy hike in the Eagle River valley.
kim delapaz
Beautiful, lots of very nice campsites, and so much to see.
Chris Heering
Alaska is beautiful. Please take your trash and belongings with you. Also be aware of wildlife, don’t get caught with your pants down unprepared.
Kyle and Jenn Todd
Always a great local get-away to come and visit the Chugach state park. Flattop is one of the main local favorites and is a good fun hike with great views of the greater Anchorage area. Despite it being fairly short there are some pretty steep spots your average grandma might throw a fuss over. Alas, come go for a hike in our beautiful state park and you wont regret it.
Bring $5 for parking.
Corey Berner
Nice hikes but be careful on the drive up. The road is almost all gravel and most rental car companies charge you extra if they figure out you drove on gravel.
FairytaleFilmmaker
The Matanuska glacier was a fine adventure. It was a warm summer day but very chilly when we got close to the ice. Some ski poles would have enabled us to navigate on top of the ice but there was plenty of natural gravel that enabled us to get pretty close in our tennis shoes.
Azalia Isenhart
It was awesome quite. And very scenic! For the area I was in it had a gorgeous panoramic view!
JD Ramey
Bird Creek ATV area is a nice place for any skill level rider. Ideal for beginners to gain riding time on easy trails. Signs mark the main trails but are absent once you venture off the trails that shoot off the main.
Stephanie Lee
Amazing views and great hiking trails. A great way to keep in shape and see the beautiful Alaska. This is what it is all about! Fresh Air, Fresh Breath and Fresh Sites!
Brian Booth
Awesome adventure, serious climb to top, not for beginners, but unspeakable breathtaking, will do again, highly recommended
Sky Money
chugiak state park is so big there's so many things to do there you can walk or ride a bike and just sit there and look around or maybe bring a book and sit on the bench and read it's nice and quiet.even in the rain it's kind of a fun place to go take a walk I like it at least a lot of people don't enjoy the rain but I do at this place rain snow or shine I spend a lot of time here its really beautiful year round. Fun for all ages to safe and everybody knows where it is because it's just very known up here.
James Dimter
I would recommend going when the sky is clear out so it makes for better lighting.
michelle thompson
Crow creek mining was a blast! BEAUTIFUL location friendly people. Mosquitos were the only problem we had. Definitely a must do when in Alaska
Ryan Stafford
If you're in the woods then you might be in the Chugach State Park. The Chugach State Park is home to many trails, fishing, camping, and sightseeing; however the Chugach State Park doesn't include free parking. Make sure you have a parking decal or you'll need to bring cash for the parking fee. You can buy the Chugach State Park parking decal at REI in Anchorage.
Flying drones is prohibited in the Chugach State Park. Read "AAC 20.020 Aircraft" for more information.

Awesome views. Bring bear spray or a .45 due to the bear traffic but definitely worth the hike and camp. It was a little cold at night (Sept 2018) but overall would recommend. Also a fantastic trail run starting late spring.
Cien Hoen
Lovely views of Turnagin Arm south of Anchorage Alaska. Many little turn out areas along the stretch of Seward Hwy to catch a glimpse of the bore tide or majestic mountains lining both sides of the bay.
Ellie Nicole
Beautiful hike. Great trail. Lots of options for trails and scenery. 100% remembered. Trail goes all the way to Seward. Just be careful of wild life your walking in their home.
Tina Mullins
Chugach National Forest is always beautiful and breathtaking
AkDeluxeRider
Beautiful and serene. Truly an amazing place.
strumndrum Ukulele & Djembe (strumndrum)
Awesome place. The wife and I went for a couple day vacation and did some great hikes. What an unbelievable area.
Nicholas Hood
This place is a hidden gem for a local state park experience. I of course was visiting from out of town and wanted something tucked away and quiet and I found this beautiful body of water at the base of the mountain walls with tall grass and dead wood here and there with a young coyote jumping around. Doesn’t get much better!
Cherish Jordan
From the Glen Alps parking area to Power Line trail. This is such an amazing place to explore. We saw a bull moose off in the distance. It was pet friendly, we brought our dog and saw many others with theirs. There are several trails I'd still like to explore here (Middle Fork, Flattop).
Priscilla Velarde
There are plenty of year round trails and lots of lovely views of the city. You won’t be disappointed.
Fronty Parker
This park is big, many options for outdoor activities, I took a kayak trip with family down a portion of Eagle River. It was a great 10 mile, 4 hour float through a very scenic area.
Kyle Hall
Wonderful place to stop and enjoy all the beautiful things.
Jason Cecil
Beautiful scenery. Was only there for an hour but the site is eched into my memory. Sadly my phone died on the way there and I wasn't able to get any pictures.
Tamara Mabley
Beautiful day for a Mt. Baldy hike. Trail is still well marked despite the snow. You will definitely need some spiked footwear for the steeper parts of the trail.
Emily M. Taylor
Great hike to the waterfall and the views are wonderful! Took the whole family from age 2 to 44 and had lunch at the waterfall
J. Alberto Ponce
This place was really cool. I don't mean just the weather. The log cabin and all the wood carved statues. the views were just spectacular.
G. C.
Great fishing. Nice to see bald eagles near their nest.
GreenEggsAndSam !
Absolutely awesome view of Anchorage and the area from the easy to access outlook. Trails were easy to follow in the snow with footprints and well-placed markers. I went up the flattop trail and was treated to great views. I turned around a little ways after the first two peaks because I was hiking alone and the clouds were coming down on me. I saw a couple make it to the summit with their two dogs. Couldn't have been too hard since they didn't have crampons or anything like that when I passed them. Overall great place I hope to explore more!
Jessica Throckmorton
Arctic Valley is Awesome! Just remember they lock the lower gate at 10pm!
nic Talerico
Great trail boarding if u can make it all the way up and back. U can pretty much board all the way back. Lots of fun great views.
Jennifer Delker
Right outside of Anchorage. Gorgeous hikes, moderate trail traffic. Wildflowers were in full bloom mid July.
Moli Baker
Beautiful hike near end of Hiland Rd in Eagle River by North Fork trailhead. Moderate hike out to Symphony and Eagle Lakes. Bring container for blueberries!
Ryan Coquilla
Awesome challenging hike up to Flattop Peak. Great for snowshoeing!
Joe Tatar
Awesome Park, lots to see and do. It has trees and mountains.
Colby “Cheezee”
We only drove through on the way back and forth between Anchorage and Seaward but it was very beautiful.
Ashlee Offerman
Beautiful, peaceful, clean air right outside Anchorage; I only wish I didn't wait so long to a break from the city.
Melodious Merri
I do wish they opened up the other parking at McHugh Creek during winter. Lots of Alaskans still hike in the winter.
Peter Crumb
Great place for easy to mod day hiking did the Dew mound trail 7 mile loop no wildlife but great views
Andrea Gilbert
Great place to take the dog!
Will Day
By and far the most accessible park in Alaska. Many trailheads within a short drive Anchorage. A perfect destination for a day trip into the backcountry.
VeryCoolCat
Huge state park. Don't venture off trails, if you get turned around, you may need rescue so bring a compass as an emergency precaution. Do not rely on the sun for direction as being this far north puts the sun slightly off direction. Winter don't bother unless you are experienced and prepared for knee to head deep snow.
Elizabeth Angasan
If traveling here in the winter, I highly recommend a vehicle with all wheel/4 wheel drive and at the least studded tires. Our front wheel car really struggled up those hills.
Robin Morgan
Great time at Eagle River Nature Preserve
Faith Carpenter
Always fun! Remember to be safe, and pack out the what you pack in :)
Emily
Lots of bears out, so I’m told, so people were packing but I didn’t have any trouble at all. It’s a gorgeous ride/trail!
Michael Carlson
Awesome place to visit , I was recommended by my TripAdvisor. This park is big, many options for outdoor activities, I took a kayak trip with near Eagle River. It was a great 10 mile, 4 hour float through a very scenic area.
Ward Lane
Snow is coming. Get outside. Go to the park. It's fun!!
Lemuel Black
I spent nearly all summer in the area on the Swan Lake Fire. The whole region is beautiful
Daniel Nichols
An amazing place and right next to Anchorage. It has a great variety of views, hiking trails, and more.
Manuel Colon
One of my favorite spots to get away from it all.
Kimberly Eller
Lovely hike. Very windy especially near rabbit lake.
Tommy Metzger
Amazing place it’s one sight after another, highway driving around the chugach is just sensational.
Claus Hybertz Pedersen
Just so beautifull, like it has been carved by a master.
Justin Johnson
Twin peaks view was amazing. Very beautiful climb.
Stephanne Payne
Gorgeous view. Roadside pull offs are a little noisy and windy but it's very picturesque!
Kaylin Moffitt
Lovly quite trails . Seen some sweet development steppers construction is doing putting in a bridge over penguin Creek
Chris Walker
Great place. Easy access to some wild places.
Janet James
Eklutna Lake is beautiful, has a trail. Wonderful views
Noemy Garcia
Absolutely beautiful. Perfect for quads!
Kristin Westbay
A great hike! Not necessarily for beginners or children.
Rod P
Beautiful nature scenery along with past buildings that complements to the past.
Mary Winkler
I stayed in Eagle River campground which is part of Chugach State Park. The sites do not have electric, or water. The camp does provide a tank with portable water in a central location. They have fire rings and picnic tables with forest surrounding your site.
The campground has two bathrooms without water. I felt very safe.
The trail is between sites 7 and 8. The trail takes you passed Eagle River with nice views of the fast moving water.
The camp is very close to highway 1. When you exit from the south, the street you want is almost directly across from the exit. Google maps doesn't make this clear. If you end up at the landfill just make a Uturn.
Cheryl Kaufman
Just drove through, but it is amazing
Ben Traylor
The most accessible and beautiful park. Soo many things to do and see. To many to list here
TCB
This place is beautiful and it is very well taken care of. There is so much stunning nature to enjoy! Bring a picnic lunch!
Laura Nobles
First time visitor. Breath taking beautiful. We had 5 ft of snow while there, thought it may cause travel difficulties but it was easy to get around. They are well prepared. Will visit again.
Anand Vivek Khanduri
Very scenic park with tall trees. If you have kids above 4-5 yrs a MUST GO hike to thunderbird falls. Don’t miss it. Hike level low- moderate. Nice wooden deck to give falls view. If that’s not enough then go further down to have direct uninterrupted view of fall. Kids will love it. Carry thin warm jacket and water. Check photos and videos I posted of the fall
Mizz Bridgett Creech
Amazing place to take in the entire city! On a clear day you can see all the way across the inlet to Sleeping lady. You can park and take a short walk to the lookout point. Or if u prefer hit the trail all the way up to the summit of Flatop. Plus many more trail to venture off. Great place to pick berries in the fall
Jodie Buckingham
Always packed, but loads of fun if you have 4 wheelers, or any off road rig.
Scott Green
Wonderful place for a leisurely hike. The scenery is amazing!
Santhosh Kumar
Chugach state park is place not to be missed during your Alaska visit. The drive from Anchorage to Seward via state park is amazing. Every turn brings out the best of mother nature. I recommend this to anyone.
Kate C. (CaffeineQueen)
Absolutely beautiful! Views are unlike anywhere else in the world.
Michael
The trees are beautiful, the colors and the nature is great. I haven’t been deep into the park, but so far it’s a very nice place with lots of nature
James Davis
Absolutely beautiful. Short drive from Anchorage. The views are breathtaking. I'd recommend the flattops mountain trail! It's a big tough but getting on top of that mountain will change your life.
Also, bring bear spray :)
Susan Arnett
Oh my goodness! We actually got to see a ton of beluga whales on a self-guided experience. Also got to see a couple of mountain sheep and goats. Didn't see any actual Big Horns so we couldn't tell if they were female or young males. We have also been able to see the note tide a couple of times. Today is our first day here that the smoke hasn't been so bad.
Heather Brown
We are very outdoorsy types of people and enjoy being able to have beautiful parks and trails in our backyards to go walk or enjoy at the drop of a hat. Our dogs enjoy it as much or more then we do too! And it's not just one type of scenery, you get a buffet of things to enjoy depending on what you are into that day, or the weather or your timeframe... Love it
Misty Notte
This is a great place to camp. Very peaceful. Enjoying our weekend.
Jenelle Hamlett
Fun outing with the family. Found a sparkly rock!
Brian O
This area is very close to Anchorage, and offers some of favorite hiking paths, views, and photo opportunities.
It is worth visiting in each season.
I've seen moose, bear, sheep, and more wildlife here than I can count... even watching the spawning salmon in mid to late summer is a thrill every year.
Camping in this area is also fantastic.
Edward McClung
This park is massive which you knew if you looked at a map of AK especially near South and South East of Anchorage. Incredible ridge pass hikes in this park. If you have a ride to drop you off and pick you up you can do spectacular one way passes. Not sure if this park is technically open in the winter season.
Azhaan Shah
Life isn't always really glamorous and fabulous. It's about encouraging people to go back to natural beauty. Chugach State Park is one of the places which is must be visit in your life at least once a time.
Beautiful and rugged scenery. Huge Mountains, thousands of trees, and rivers flowing high and rapid with rain runoff and glacial melt. And views of the Matanuska Glacier, East of Palmer, Alaska. Oh my God, How beautiful you are.
Always a delightful, and very popular, place to get a little fresh air and sunshine. Adjoins the city, so not a real challenge to get to, and you usually meet people visiting from all over, so what's not to like?
360 degree view of all the mountains and of Anchorage. Each mountain, its elevation and its distance are labeled around a circle.
John Johnson
Great place to hiking.
Francis Hopkins
A beautiful place, I really love my time here exploring nature. I will return when I get a chance. Make sure to check out the wildlife and the historical places around the area.
Farrell Stoudt
Love having the mountains that are easily accessible!
Michael Vanhorne
One of our favorite places in Alaska!! Well maintained and a great place to spend the day with your family.
Robbye Thomas
Great access, nominal fees, walking and biking trails, mountain paths, and warnings about wildlife safety precautions. Ensure you have fuel, food, water, first aid supplies, and warning triangles/flares, and other essentials as you travel these somewhat isolated areas. Lots of people pulled off the highway to take a hike. I saw a mom biking with her baby in a safety seat.
ALASKA DISCOVERIES: WAIT FOR YOUR TRAVEL BUDDIES WHEN POSSIBLE. Gorgeous. Breathtakingly beautiful. An impromptu decision to thank God for life and the opportunity to discover a rare and natural wonder known as Alaska. Grandeur this rare is often better when shared. Besides, the ability to navigate picturesque moments as you drive is delightful with another set of hands and eyes. Imagine a drive thru Coffee Haus in a remote part of the wilderness where moose and bear were seen. They roam free. “Oh Beautiful” (song). Enjoy the photographs: as seen thru my eyes – Robbye Thomas wishes you safe travels, love, and abundance wherever you travel around the globe.
Meghan Phillips
We had a fun family hike. A short loop at little man's pace, he was 2.5 years. There were observation decks to look out over some water, try to see some fish. Gorgeous mountain views, puddles to splash in, and a tree we could stand in. We all had fun.
Cyndy Lopez
Didn't have much of a chance to explore. Trying to find something and got lost. But it's nice driving in the quiet back roads and just enjoying the views. Roads were mostly plowed with minimal ice. Which is wonderful considering the recent weather.
Dorn Van Dommelen
It's a big place. Try to keep invasive plants out of the heart of the park by only hiking along the edges, on the tourist trails. Avoid the spooky mountains and glaciers. Do you really need to go anywhere other than Flattop?
Chuks C-M.
Came here during my visit in Alaska and it was a beautiful piece of nature. I highly recommend going to several places of this place to tour. Too many to count but it will not disappoint! I hear the summer months are the best times to visit.
Kaaren Jones
Unspeakably beautiful. Please prevent the opening of further hunting & fishing on the already- depleted wildlife resources we experienced during our 3 month trek over eastern, central & Kenai regions of Alaska. The lower "48" must become active in preserving the thing that they no longer have: untouched expanse where wildlife roams free of human intervention.
Kristy Allain
We went to Chena Hot Springs twice. I had a great time, my kids had a great time, and the weather couldn't be better. We got to see the local moose, reindeer, the ice sculptures, and of course go into the hot springs. It was definitely worth the unpaved road ride up there and parking wasn't bad, I wish I could've stayed longer ❣😍 …
Alexandria Glass
Wonderful assortment of trails to hike/bike for all skill levels. Trails are also very breath taking and peaceful. Some are more popular than others, but I don't believe any of them would be a mistake to try out. If you don't believe just go for yourself.
Ru “RUtech” Te
One of the many great Alaskan parks, lots to do and explore. Get out there an enjoy it just make sure you do your research both the terrain, weather reports and regulations in those areas. Please, please, please be a responsible house guest and take care the land like pack out what you pack in.
m.w. brooke
beautiful park, well maintained trails and roads. the flattop trail was absolutely exquisite from the top, though the way up was a bit touch and go due to traffic-related erosion, making it rather slippery in places, especially going down.
Tahnee Seccareccia
There is always a great hike to be found in the park. Plus you can't beat the views from the top of Flattop. If you decide to hike these mountains, be sure to wear proper footwear and clothes. The trails can be pretty tough and uphill, and hiking in flats or vans is not recommended.
Ben
Falls Creek trail was very beautiful in fall colors but definitely a steep climb. Fantastic views along the way. Well worth the 2+ hour hike up.
Paul Chepolis
Always a great hike.
Clint Sengmany
It's is always a pleasure to explore Alaska. The only problem is finding random pieces of trash along the trails. People need to keep their trash with them and not leave it behind.
Matt Henshilwood
One of the prettiest places on the planet
Thor Thurneau
Beautiful, pictures say it all.

Eagle River Nature Center is a must stop for anyone visiting the Anchorage area. Lovely trails and great views. The wild life is almost as good as the scenery. Staff at the visitor center is always friendly and nice.
PugzThePogz
If you only plan on doing the loop and not actually hike then don't get your expectations too high . The spots you'll end up to are basically river banks. Altho it's still cool.
Paula
Always take out of state family to this beautiful location.
Greg Eschenlohr
If you're looking for great views of Anchorage as well as some great hiking trails the chugach state park won't do you wrong. I've lived in a few places but no where can you get so far into Wilderness while still being in the city. It's tons of fun even when the temperature is near zero
Kraig Klaar
Something for everyone! You can hike, sightsee, whale watch, see a bore tide, pan for gold, world famous salmon fishing, snow skiing, visit a glacier, and much more, all while never leaving the Chugach! Keep bear spray with you though, parts of the mountains have large Brown Bear populations.
Klaus Bello
Luckily on our way in we saw hundreds of Beluga whales in the bay. What n a outstanding show. Beautiful and rare. We were driving this road up and down for few days and could not repeat the experience.
Patricia Raley
Bore tide creates a wave that is about 3 ft tall. Twice daily this happens. The locals know the timing. 30 feet of tidal change and this phenomenon happens. The outbound tide meets the inbound tide. You may be lucky enough to see it. Dangerous to attempt to join in because of silt deposit dangers. Amazing to see and hear.
Douglas Markussen
I grew up in Anchorage and spent a lot of my free time all throughout the park. I technical rock climbed, mountain climbing (summer and winter), and hiked off many beaten paths. It was a zen experience sitting alone atop a peak, watching the tide go in and out with nothing but the wind and birds to hear.
Namiko Asuka
Beautiful scenery here! The state park is huge, and there are various parkong spaces scattered across Eagle River and Chugiak. Most parking spots lead straight to the trails. Parking is usually $5 a day. I've seen plenty of wildlife on these trails, and bear spary is always recommended just in case. Overall fantastic, beautiful park!
Thomas Williams
Love the fishing and camping ther
George McAdoo
Beautiful, rugged scenery. Mountains, trees, and rivers flowing high and rapid with rain runoff and glacial melt. And views of the Matanuska Glacier, East of Palmer, Alaska.
To the South of Anchorage, on the Seward Highway, more rugged scenery, with the ever changing seascape of Turnagain Arm. Take a left to Portage Glacier, for more breathtaking scenery.
Kyle Flenar
Wonderful scenery with great hikes. I did Crow's Pass to Raven Glacier and it was phenomenal. The ranger at the main station was very helpful figuring out what to do and tips for the trail.
Dow Jopp
Another amazing day in Chugach! Waiting for a bore tide, while considering the downward movement of snow made the day. This was a pull off just before Girdwood cutoff. Kids had fun exploring. Alaska is amazing!
Bryan Bell
Childhood fav park
Stephen Miller
Great service...Good price...hot fries and A happy staff so you feel positive when you eat your food 👍 …
Garrett Carpenter
Incredible views here. As with anywhere in Alaska. The hike to the ridge here is intense. Be prepared and wear good shoes. Parking is a few dollars and enforced by local rangers.
Mark Featherston
Scenic but encountered NO wildlife in two separate visits.
Ben Hutt
Short hike onto Lake Eklutna
Nancy Weller
Great place to walk the dog

Very sunny, nice weather, and overall a great view.
Sharon Smith
Amazing beauty. Vast wilderness and spectacular mountains; and the most awesome blue ice glacier that looks like it was sculpted. It's rather remote but worth finding, if you can.
rudd plate
Some of.my favorite hikes and spots in the world
Meghan Phillips
We've only done one trail, a shorter one. It looks down past two observation decks and has a spur that goes to a hollow tree. We choose this trail bc our toddler sets the pace and will walk the whole thing. We've done it as part of their guided walk for littles, with his preschool, and as a family. He loves the decks and looking for fish in the water.
The center itself has cool stuff inside for him to look at and touch, including a "Close Up Center" and pelts from many local animals like beaver, bear, coyote, ermine etc
Jonathan C
A great place to go for a hike. They have many different trail length options, from short to 10+ miles. The trails are very well-maintained.
Delila Reyes
The View here in Alaska is absolutely beautiful peaceful and a place I would love to come back to and stay a little longer only during the summer time though have not experienced the winter yet LOL
Franny Yeates
The Chugach State Park is located in the Chugach National forest and is located off the Seward Highway. The park provides the opportunity to hike and view wildlife in the lush sub polar temperature rain forest. We passed through its southern border on our way to Seward. Beautiful stands of sitka spruce and hemlock with mountains beyond.
John Thain
State parks in Alaska might be a little different then the state parks you know if you are from outside. It's nearly 500,000 acres of mountains, valleys, lakes, and glaciers. There are trailheads all around Anchorage, the most popular one is Glen Alps. That's a good place to start exploring! Be prepared, know your limits, and have fun.
Ian Smith
The very finest wilderness excursions, available to all at any level of ability. Close to Anchorage and bigger than any one of us. We'll never be bored. There is always something to explore here.
David Commini
There are plenty of family friendly activities in Chugach State Park. My family's favorite thing is to go on short hikes, and there are excellent trails a plenty everywhere. There are also great spots for photos just about every where you go.
Neve Studios
Always an amazing experience to go and dwell in the woods. It is so close to Anchorage and easy to get to. Watch out for bears in certain areas. The trails are helpful to find.
Benjamin Kuehn
It's a very big state park, filled with so much to do. I like flattop the best but I've only gone on 7 trails. Amazing place!
Grace Fagan
Very pretty mountains but if you don't like cold visit only in the summer months I also hear there is great advice skiing on the mountains
Caleb
Tons of cool things to see and places to go. Rock climbing, eagle and beluga spotting, hiking, just a scenic drive even. Good place for a quick trip or to make a day.

Fabio Jara
Trails are clean and very well maintained. We got to see a moose from 20 feet away. Really nice experience.
Naren SS
Brilliant mountains and glaciers, just from the Glenn highway.. seems like a massive forest overall
Dorn Van Dommelen
If Jack Kerouac were alive today he'd be wandering around the Chugach high on life and whatever else he could get his hands on. He'd likely be drunk, too. But one thing he'd figure out quickly is that while you can't fall off a mountain you can sure as hell fall down one and end up needing to be rescued by the Chugach Park rangers who need a lot more funding than our stingy legislature is willing to give them.
Michael Forte
This is the Knick (pronounced K-Nick) River area. Is a glacial river. Fed by the Knick Glacier. Such a huge place! Hidden lakes and waterfalls. Bears, moose, eagles and everything in between just great!
Michael Cleveland
Catch some beautiful views of yourself and friends standing on calm weather after a week of hard work. Beluga Point offers such peacefulness and you must see it for yourself.
A.L. Pongratz
Always a delightful, and very popular, place to get a little fresh air and sunshine. Adjoins the city, so not a real challenge to get to, and you usually meet people visiting from all over, so what's not to like?
Emily Clarrey
Stunning! This is a must visit when in Alaska! So much to see and do here you could spend weeks exploring this state park!
Natalie Knight
Have loved the Seward Highway for many, many years...take the drive and drive all over...if you are under the speed limit, be polite and pull over...I always let others pass me, with a pull over. <3
Jim Kelly
If you don't like a beautiful park like this you should just head to an ugly big city in the lower 48. It's beautiful, clean, and nature puts on a show called survival in front of you, hard to ask for more.
RONNIE M
Nice relaxing place to stroll, was one place after parkin had a sign 'beware' of people. Soo I went to another location. Had gotten lost and saw an Alaskan Train truck w driver sittin in parkin lot he promptly ignored me was rude..hd not presented myself as a begger or burgler was away from his door several feet. Left bad taste of the Alaska Train. I hd taken it to Seward and to Denali.
Ricky Bennion
Great place for a walk, great views of Anchorage
Tyler Mason
This park is big and has a lot to do. But trails can get crowded and people don't clean up after their dogs as well as they should.

Chugach State Park covers 495,204 acres immediately east of the Anchorage Bowl in south-central Alaska. Though primarily in the Municipality of Anchorage, a small portion of the park north of the Eklutna Lake area in the vicinity of Pioneer Peak lies within the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
Jill Grogan

Amazing nature and not too far from the Anchorage area. Snowfall is pretty when it falls. Love going here as a family.
Jack Daniels
Lots to see little access do to property owners blocking grand fother'd trail heads off with gates and privet parking I'd like to see the old accesses opened to the public again just because you have property off of an old trail sholdent give you the right to block the access to a park.
D C
It was very nice with lots of snow. Very good calf workout. Dog also loved bounding through the snow.
