3 stars because they have everything you need. The magazine selection tho is cheap. The employees are not very knowledgeable so take their knowledge with a grain of salt, if they know what a grain is. But good place to go with a good selection. Just be knowledgeable before arriving because they will probably feed you with info thats incorrect.

Fantastic local gun store. The space is tight/cramped but only because of the vast array of firearms they sell, these Gentlemen are want to set you up for success with whatever your outdoor sports need is. They are also very clear when it comes to providing you the information necessary to purchase firearms. It was very clear and concise the first time I went in there what I needed in order to purchase my first firearm. Since then I have consistently purchased ammo from them since because they are reliable.

Bought a used gun here. Can't beat the price. People are friendly and best selection of guns in any store in Vermont. Amazing guns sold here, and they even have a cabinet of WW1 & WW2 guns. They are not for sale but great to see them.

I love listening to the stories they share. If you are around to hear it. Also shopping here I've also been introduced to the Sportsmans club in St Albans through Range clean up day. Whether you are an experienced outdoors man, or new to the scene this is a place you should be sure to come and check out.

Neat place! I would think any gun fan would feel right at home. Their selection was quite impressive, and then we saw the upstairs! This place is quite amazing. The staff was very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. They asked right away if we needed help. Bill Bailey helped us out and he was awesome. Probably the best full service gun store in the Burlington area. Good selection of firearms, ammo, suppressors, etc. They seem to some stock of the most popular kinds if ammo, which is more than I can say for most gun stores during these panicky times.

I wish I had a lot of money and much firearm knowledge and less self-consciousness among such a varied and curious selection of self defense items. Upon arriving, the place was as mysterious as you could possibly ask for. The exterior of the building was very plain and stones were crumbling off the exterior. You walk in one door, exposed to much more (where I come from) code-violating structures, some of which might be in the process of repair I don't know. Then there is another door which leads down some steep ancient stairs to the underground. Down you go, and there is even another door to go through but based on the stickers and what you can see through the glass, you're in the right place. The shop is teeming with men, young and old, muscular and cheeseburger-bodied. Stacks of ammo are everywhere. Guns of every type, together and taken apart are in cases. In the middle of the store is a spiral staircase going back up to the surface of the world where much more guns must be stored because a dude walked down the staircase with a large black (excuse my inexperience) maybe like a mini-rocket launcher?? And exclaimed "hey we DO have one left!" And everyone cheered. I bought a 2nd amendment sticker and left.

They offer additional information without having to pry it out of them like I have at other places. I never feel uncomfortable or pressured by any means. I have been shopping at Powderhorn for years and it is the only place in the Chittenden county area that I purchase firearms or ammunition. Their prices are consistently the lowest you will ever find, most of the time even when compared to online prices. The shop, I think, has a perfect atmosphere for a gun shop and their selection is outstanding. More than once I have stopped in thinking I had to order something and they have it in stock. Its nice that a place keeps such a great inventory so that people can actually handle the firearm they are interested in before making an order. I've always had a great experience at this shop and will continue to shop there as long as I live in this state.

This place is the real deal! I've owned pistols for a while (handed down by family member), and have not gotten into shooting regularly until recently. I've been to a few other shops to buy supplies recently, and out of all of them, this was the first place that I felt 100% comfortable in as some one that is newer to shooting and fire arms in general. All the sales guys were extremely helpful, and I was able to find the 17rd magazine for my Smith MP 2.0 that I've been looking high and low for. It seems like a small shop from the exterior, but once you walk in, you'd be surprised as to how large it is. The spiral staircase leading to the second floor is pretty sick. Their inventory is quite impressive as well. At this moment, they have a variety of higer capacity magazines left in stock. I highly recommend this place. Get em while you can VT!!!!! I have been buying guns from the Powderhorn for almost 10 years and I never got a bad deal. Sure the place is in the basement and a little disheveled, but I consider it ambiance. What they don't spend on fancy cases and flooring they pass the savings on to you. The sales staff are very knowledgeable and always willing to help. Their prices and selection are usually better than any place in Vermont. If you go there and they are busy there is a reason for that.

The folks at Powedhorn are always helpful. Whether you're window shopping, looking for a specific firearm/accessory/ammo, or need help mounting/boresighting an optic. Current times have inventory somewhat limited but new stock rolls in fairly regularly and they can order something dont currently have on hand. transferes for online purchases run around $40 which is fair since you should be buying local anyways!

The Powderhorn is my go-to store for anything gun related. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The store is almost always insanely busy, but they do a great job of trying to make sure everyone is taken care of. Nate is relentless in tracking down guns and components and every time they had to order something for me that wasn't in stock, they were right up front about the pricing. As a 15 year customer, I've never had any reason to doubt that Bill and his team were giving me a fair and honest price. I've also known these guys to keep a bit of ammo in fast sellout calibers, that they could easily be selling, set aside so that customers wouldn't have to wait to find ammo to try out their new gun. That tells me that it's not just about the money here. The store itself is PACKED with a wide assortment of firearms. An excellent balance of handguns, modern rifles, traditional hunting rifles, shotguns and muzzle loaders as well as the widest assortment of holsters I've seen in VT. A large selection of knives, lights, sights, scopes, cleaning equipment, ammo and targets round out the store.

Not sure why people are bothered about not being approached for help. The staff are very friendly and more than happy to help if you initiate and have questions. I like the idea of being allowed to explore without being hassled. That being said, I don't think I have ever felt ignored. I have bought two guns from them and had a holster special ordered and both experiences were great!

I have had several years of experience buying and selling to Powderhorn. In terms of quantity and quality of their selection, Powderhorn is above many of the firearms stores in Vermont. When it comes to making a purchase they are also a very knowledgeable bunch and will give you an honest opinion, whether or not it makes them a sale. I gave them the rating above because they are helpful, courteous and having a selection that is tough to beat (that just being what they have in stock, online its even more so). That being said, I have a warning to independent or liberal gun owners when approaching this store, the workers and owners have certain political or otherwise opinions and if you are sensitive to such things, I would recommend other gun shops such as Parro's in Waterbury where they don't seem to talk about politics much. This is not to say that the staff at Powderhorn will attack you or anything, they have always been great people in my experience, however they are vocal in their beliefs and that should be respected. If you can look over that then this store is great if not the best, if not, your experience may not be as enjoyable as mine and you may want to find another store to fit your needs.

Evidently some of these reviewers expect the place to be sanitized and devoid of dust. I don't have allergies, nor have I ever found any of the staff to be rude and disinterested. If one doesn't pounce on me immediately, I usually approach one of them and ask for assistance. I don't need a person hovering over me if I'm just checking out the guns. I've never bought a gun from them that wasn't less expensive than their competitors, so to say that they're pricey is absurd.

There seems to be a lot of negative reviews here from people who’s only gun experience has come from Dick’s sporting goods. This place is a real gun shop, with an awesome selection of great guns, and everything to go with them. Although some of the staff isn’t all knowing, I️ bet they are experts in some items sold there. You can’t expect every person to know everything about every manufacturer and model of every gun. You can’t expect the guy who loves AR’s and semi-auto pistols to be an expert on revolvers and lever action rifles. I️ was happy to hear an “I️ don’t know” several times when asking questions rather than some bs spouted out. Every price I️ saw was lower than what I️ expected. The biggest downside is it’s a big place, and it is busy.... therefore sometimes you have to wait to get the help you want, and sometimes it’s not enthusiastic. Stop whining you babies.

The guys at Powderhorn are extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and customer driven. I misjudged their hours once and showed up about 45 minutes before they were open. The owner let me in while he was preparing the store for the day and answered every rifle question I had even though I wasn't looking to spend a dime that day. You don't get that kind of service just anywhere. I've been searching for a particular rifle for some time now that is somewhat hard to find locally. The guys there have spent quite a bit of time with me working with their distributors to locate the rifle I want, and offered to do a very reasonably priced FFL transfer if they can't get the gun themselves and I find it online. They put in the time, and make the effort to build customer loyalty. If you are in the market for a gun of any type make Powderhorn your first stop. They also carry a wide selection of ammo, very reasonably priced. Weather it is "Whatever goes down range" for range practice, or high end target ammo, or home defense rounds they have it.

From hunting rifles, self defense pistols (of widely varying sizes), to enthusiast armaments, this place is a den of exploration and gunpowder. I've never been a large enthusiast for firearms, but it's always been enjoyable to look around while my far more serious brother picks his favorites. If you're an enthusiast, or an aspiring hunter, this is a great place to explore. Staff have always been respectable and helpful, and even while I don't appreciate being around so many firearms, I don't feel exceptionally unsafe.

I've gone a few times recently just looking around, but my main review comes from over a year ago when I bought a Ruger EC9s for a decent price The guys behind the counter listened to my needs, and wants they took me straight to the one for me... Even hooked me up with two kinds of ammo 1 for play, and one for work I recently had to use my firearm to deter a would be mugging, there were homes with windows behind him, and I had no way to control my backstop... Luckily when I said the guys got me the right stuff I wasn't kidding, a rubber plug hollowpoint critical defense round in his hip/thigh area spun him just a bit and tripped him straight to the ground The responding officers told me it was good to see someone prepared for defense, and not trying to kill people if it can be avoided with recklessly high calibers or powerful ammo types

Very helpful staff. I was looking for an inexpensive shotgun for general use. They showed me a few options until I found a great deal on a used Mossberg 500 with an adjustable stock and a forend with a flashlight built in for about 370. They also offer layaway and you can pay it off over 6 months, which is great for more expensive items. If you're into guns or are considering getting into them, be sure powderhorn is your first stop.

These guys could care less about anyone that walks in the door. I have went here now 4 times to BUY a gun. Every time that I have went there not one person there asked if I needed help. When I did get someone to help he acted annoyed that I asked to see a gun. I'm terribly sorry that I asked you to do your job! I figured after that happened the first time that maybe I just caught the wrong person on the wrong day but that wasn't the case at all. EVERY single time I have went there the same thing happened. I ended buying one at Bj's gun shop not too far away. The prices were decent, they were very nice and they actually at least acted like they cared. The selection was much better at the powderhorn but the customer service waas terrible. I would rather pay more than give my money to someone that doesn't care about their customers.

Pricey place with generally higher end guns. For the more discerning buyer with cash to spend. Also has good deals on ammo occasionally, and a plethora of fancy firearms to ogle. Ive seen semi auto ARs, AK variants, MP5, AkM, and some elephant guns for show. Also has every accessory you could ever need. Sights. Lights. Fiber optics. HD thermal scopes. Again, if you have the cash, you'll have a blast.

Very good selection on hand in stock of retail handguns, shotguns and rifles along with ammunition, targets scopes etc. I also found ample cleaning & reloading supplies and parts for building a MSR or accesorizing one if that's your thing. Binoculars, scopes lasers and holsters but you need to be able to navigate a spiral metal stairway to get up to the 2nd floor once you get inside from the concrete stairs down inside from non-handicapped friendly entry. Just being honest. (Don't worry about wasting time online with your smartphone inside, poor reception so give yourself or others notice you might be offline for phone calls possibly) Found some pretty good deals online, and in the store. They have some used guns in fair shape, but if you plan on using debit or credit cards, try bringing cash for better prices.

First off I want to say that anyone who post a bad commit about this place has NO idea what they're talking about. I have a vary large collection of firearms, well over 150 grand invested in just guns alone with many of my purchases coming form Powderhorn. I live in Southern Vt and every time I'm in the market for new gear or a firearm I do not hesitate to make the 3 hour trip north. As for the haters who called the shop racist you are way out of line, the staff at Powderhorn has been more then helpful in the nicest way possible to me and my friend who goes with me most of the time who of which is African American. Please anyone who has not been to the store themselves do not let these unintelligent haters keep you from going, you will be missing out on the best firearm/outdoor stores in this part of the country. I have access to wholesale pricing and for some reason Powderhorns prices for the most part come in below wholesale. That in part with how knowledgeable the sales team is makes Powderhorn unbeatable in the firearm market. Like I said, I live 3 hours away and don't know anyone working there by name, this is 100% my opinion and not written in the stores behalf. With the way this country is heading with firearms taking the heat for the mentally ill cowards who live amongst us you better get what you want now before its to late and Powderhorn is the place to do it.
