Reviews of KIVA: Cafe & Spa
Elena Simons
Today we got massages at the spa and once again it was wonderful. Michelle is MAGIC! I worked in the industry for six years before moving down here to Portland a few months ago. I had had a massage with Michelle once before that so I knew I needed to see her when I moved. Highly suggest coming here. The facilities are clean and everyone is always nice. (Pro tip: Remember to tip in cash😎)

I've had a lot of facials in my life and this was the best facial I've ever had. Kiva's extractions were super gentle, the products she used were amazing, the space is amazing. I got the stop the clock facial with the hot oil scalp massage and for the price, you get quite a lot. I can't see myself getting a facial from anywhere else now. Thanks!!

The five stars for this review are specifically for Phillip. That was the best massage I’ve ever had. I get massages more than the average person and have tried at least a half dozen places in Portland without ever feeling the need to go back (aside from prescribed at a health facility). I will be joining Kivas monthly membership as a result of Phillips incredible talent and service. I did a 60 min deep tissue massage, normally I prefer 90 min and yet throughout this massage I was amazed at how much attention he gave to each body area, wondering if I was in fact receiving a 90 min massage. I like a lot of pressure and I know that’s not easy to do for the masseuse. I’ve known massage therapists and it’s a taxing profession, at the end of a day they’re exhausted from exertion and service to others. So I was just amazed at how physical he was, it made me think about the other recent massages I’ve had and how those people are either not as strong or not as willing to give so much of themselves physically for a client. He also did a number of unique stretches, massage techniques, and used accessories that I’ve never experienced. Touches like the extra hot towel at the end were really thoughtful. Phillip himself was super kind and you could tell was very into his work and art. His comments about the body, astrology, and massage showed that he appreciated the holistic service he was offering and the many benefits of massage and depth of the human body.
It was the best massage I’ve ever had.
I also used the infrared sauna before and I wouldn’t buy that separately but am glad it’s
Included in the membership offerings. The music system was reading a USB drive the entire time and making a humming noise and it was unclear that was the only way to listen to music but even if you cranked the singing bowls track it was reading it wouldn’t drown out the whirring sound. That seemed weird.
Everything else and everyone else was lovely. It seemed like a nice and approachable space, nothing too crazy in that regard.
Ashleigh Brinkman
The service was GREAT. I loved the variety of the special package and Audrey did such a good job listening to what pressure I preferred, was super professional, and made the experience very relaxing. Highly recommend!
Mandy Sims
Great location, nice facility. Great relaxing facial with message. A good quality service but seemed low staffed as far as customer service in the waiting area. Great tea room next door.
Beatriz Diaz
The service was great. The place ambience and atmosphere made the treatment more enjoyable
It’s a great spot to spend a morning or afternoon getting pampered. Definitely coming back
Jordan Barbeau
The massage was AMAZING and the whole vibe is so wonderful and relaxing. Everyone at the spa and cafe is terrific. The tea is delicious and I am going to go on a shopping spree on all the lovely stuff like lotions and decor. I selfishly hope they never get so well known that it's too busy to get an appointment, but it was truly the best massage I've ever had so I can't help but shout it from the rooftops. Can't wait to go back!
Jessica Camarena
It was a great experience and I felt very safe and comfortable. Michelle was awesome and I can't wait to get another massage soon.
David Van Veen
Best açaí bowls in Portland, in my opinion. Especially love the crunch from the drizzled coconut oil. I’ve had each different bowl at this stage and they don’t disappoint.
The tea selection is great, but some have limited supply so it is hit or miss if you’ll get your first choice. Still, you’ll get something good.
Have met friends, workmates, and gone solo. All have been great.
Only downside of this place is I wish it were closer to me! Wander off 23rd and check it out.
Lianna Dang
Felt like a new person after my aromatherapy massage with Tara! She was able to get at a lot of my tense spots and did a great job. Definitely looking forward to my next appointment! And got to try the lovely tea next door.

My experience with Kiva Tea Bar and Spa was one of the most amazing massages I have ever had hands down. I had a mini bachelorette for one of my good friends here and we thoroughly enjoyed every second of our treatments; that’s all we could talk about during our lunch! All of the staff members were amazing and easy to talk to. Kiva herself was super sweet! We will definitely be returning in the future!
William J
Super friendly folks, great smoothies. I hope they can find an alternative to the big plastic bowl and cover I received and maybe find a paper alternative?
Brandy Wiggins
Kiva is thorough, magical, and absolutely the best esthetician I've been to in Portland. The space, the vibe, and the little lagniappe of tea and cookie when it is over is the best way to levitate out of there.
Isa Dean
Sweet spot for a day date. I miss their fresh juices! Cool products for sale. Smoothies are good. Covered outdoor seating. The girl stuck her head out to tell us the smoothies were ready - could she not just have brought them outside? What's the point of giving a tip??? Ugh
Lindsay Baca
My friend treated us to a Tranquility Massage, which included tea and a cookie in the cafe next door afterwards. Every part of the experience was totally amazing. I can't believe how awesome all the hot oil and hot towels were that were included with the massage. Pure bliss.
Tammy Willis
Had the most amazing experience and massage with Michell yesterday! Received the 90 minute Deep Tissue Sports massage. I have developed a lot of myofacial tightness over the years and Michelle was able to break a lot of them down. She is strong and masterful with her technique. Honestly, the best and most productive massage I've ever received. So worth it and I will be back next time I'm in town!

Kiva is amazing she's originally from LA, we met when I came across her tea house & Spa. When we met she was excited that she met someone who was partially raised most of my 3 months of summer in OC Anaheim California, lived & breathed SD & LA. This charming charismatic lady hugged me & said it's so wonderful to meet another person from LA well I was kinda each year since I was little. Well kiva is amazing including Kiva the owner herself. Behind the doors is a escape from reality you'd never know you entered into a pathway hall leading you into a room filled with India artifacts the real thing to. As I had reflexology given by a young reflexogist me and my friend enjoyed catching up over a hot cup of tea. It's a small hidden gem you'd never know unless you asked about the spa services and the LMT's she had were full of sunshine in there eyes. A healer always knows and can sense a healer. I graduated in 1997 at East West Chester of the Healing Arts. It was this unknown sense of comfort being in that hidden gym behind closed doors the smell of incense registering now actually came directly from the source not India but Tibet. I can again one day to discover Kiva the owner once again bright eyed with grace. Very warm hearted polite & pleasant greeted me with a warm welcome and offered me a glass of champagne on the house. She was drawn to my aura and healing energy that she say down and took the time to see how my day was. With a gentle smile I said wonderful thank you with a big dimpled smile. I put purchased 2 of her 1.5hr package massage as a gift to my 2 loyal clients who have longed been such a great contribution to the start up of my own practice. I gifted a lucky penny blessed by 7 monks wrapped in aluminum foil. Technically job st a penny but to her she knew it was an amulet used to attract great wealth, good health & good fortune. The irony came today as I realized that all the artifacts was the real thing...why? I wondered next door to this art gallery filled with amazing pictures that would catch your Breath when your eyes lay upon such beauty captured in the from atleast s camera lense worth more then 50k-150k. I bought this book lined outside with black velvet the last one $50. Here's the kicker it's Kivas mom a well known photographer she was the kindest woman to come across. Like wow factor. I dawned on me just right now at currently 2:25am in a motel 6 still homeless due to covid waiting to hear about my love in business off of Vaughn & 25th not to far from Nw 23rd where I spent 3.5 years at Dosha NW. Ack to Kiva the experience was exceptional she knew how to pick her LMT subcontracts and the one who gave me a full body massage definitely had alot of positive auric loving energy. She said I feel blocked I replied with a genuine smile would you like me to open your third eye. With glee in her voice and that skipping on heart beat that twinkle in her eyes saying yes made my heart warm. Little did she know that her actual third eye is used for sonar and that from now past few 3+ weeks she's living the visions as her life unfolded by my Anakaian energy we are all linked by touch of genetic kinetic energy. To think of me is to know I'll be texting or calling you very soon. The clearer the vision the sooner the event like watching Johny Darko when the mental mind just by that one thought of opening the kitchen fridge the energy of that single thought causes the action of the physical body to catch up with it's energetic physical self.hhmmm pretty cook Namaste thank you for reading if you made it down this far 🙏.
Big hug big kiss from the Zara (ZaRah) Princess of Laos.

First off, this is only a review for the cafe side. I’ve never been to the spa. Their açaì bowls are the best I’ve ever had, and I love the little store setup they have in there. However, there have been multiple occasions I’ve stopped by well within their posted store hours and they decided to close early. I don’t feel like you can really depend on them to stick to their posted hours and, instead, you’ll have to guess if they’ll be open. I wish they’d be more consistent with that and not randomly close early on a frequent basis. If that weren’t the case, I’d give them five out of five stars for sure.
Kris Trimble
always a delicious neighborhood spot. i enjoy that they expanded their café to a market-esque venue because i can buy the items they use.
been in there twice in the past week and staff has been quick and kind both times. they let me bring my dog in too! if you're looking for a local place for smoothies, acai bowls, and tasty snacks stop by. great options for vegan & gluten free folks.
thanks y'all ~
Ashwin Goel
This place is a vibe. Amazing smoothies, coffee, açaí, and plenty of socially distant outdoor seating.
Mia-Miranda McCarty
Came here with a friend for my birthday and honestly, so glad that I did. I did so much research on spas days before booking and Im so happy we landed at Kiva. The experience was so fun and repaxing at the same time. Tara was amazing! Both our therepists were so attentive to our needs and made us so relaxed. Money well spent.
C Barrett
Excellent Covid protocols. I felt very comfortable as this was my first massage experience since February. My former massage therapist is no longer practicing. I searched for spas that specifically mentioned steps they were taking to keep staff and clients as safe as possible. Mary was wonderful and I will most certainly be back!!
Neb Cat
I've been here a few times, and really enjoy the healthy selections an atmosphere. Always bummed when they're closed for the day. Also, it's adjacent to a really cool art gallery! Worth going, bring a date!
Alycia Gideon
Amazing spa experience! I wasn’t sure what it would be like with COVID protocols, but I hardly noticed a difference. Michell was my masseuse and she is fantastic! I will definitely be returning. Shout out to the Kiva staff for creating a wonderful experience.

KIVA Spa review
Pros: Service quality. Great massage, facial, and foot bath.
Cons: Attention to detail. Owner Kiva told me the wrong time for one of my appointments so I had to leave and come back two hours later, then billed me $100 instead of providing a 100% discount (on a service that was included). Maybe it was just an off week.

I’ve been a cafe customer for years and finally tried the spa for the first time. I got the seasonal special which was a 60 minute massage of your choice, scalp massage, and 15 minute facial.
I requested Emily seeing some other reviews about her and was happy I did. I’m a runner and also have a desk job and although I get a massage every couple of months, I have various knots for sure. Emily applies the perfect pressure and was super intuitive about what my body needed in certain areas. There was one giant knot that she got out that I could physically hear. Super impressed with her skill and touch!
Julia Adams
This is a review for the spa. It says a lot about the quality of the services that I received that after the spa rescheduled my appointment twice and started my service 20 minutes late I'm still compelled to give 5 stars. (Not their fault necessarily, it sounds like they're having some staffing issues, but maybe throw in a free juice for the inconvenience ;) )
I got the Winter Special with Emily, which was not only AWESOME value, you should totally take advantage of their seasonal specials if you can, but it was the most relaxing spa experience I've ever had. Emily's deep tissue work was amazing, she was super professional and knowledgeable, and all of her little touches like sound and temperature control, aromatherapy choices, and draping technique were perfect. Literally a perfect massage, I will definitely be going back again and again.

I had my first experience with raindrop reflexology. I suffer from foot pain daily. My treatment was very relaxing and my feet feel great I will be back.

One of my favorite places to stop in the neighborhood. The smoothies are fantastic, and the granola & yogurt fruit bowl is great too. Good selection of healthy menu items. Nice relaxing atmosphere inside, staff are always pleasant and helpful if you've any questions. As I usually have my dog with me, I really enjoy sitting outside at one of their sidewalk patio tables, just a nice spot to take a break and have a snack. Highly recommended.

For the first massage in about a year, I visited Kiva Spa last week and this week for massages. I had been to the cafe but not tried any of the spa services. I met with Philip. He was skillful, kind and professional. I love that he knew what he was doing has studied musculature. When I shared the pain I was experiencing, he knew what to do and also to not overdo with my upper back. Also worth mentioning, the process to book the massage was easy, I went on the website but then realized I needed to make a adjustment to my appt time. Kiva answered the phone and easily made the change. A friendly and professional experience. I can recommend and will be returning soon.

Great service, wonderful skills, beautiful decor, soothing atmosphere. Friendly and inviting. Going to go back again. I’ve been to many spas and Kiva has me hooked now. I no longer need to try out other spas since this spa meets and goes above and beyond all my expectations!

Love this spa and Tara is the best! I've seen multiple massage therapists and she works wonders. I will definitely be back to see her 🙂 …
samantha
it was a truly incredible massage, it was an extra luxurious treatment that left me feeling really relaxed and pampered (which isn't an easy place for me to get to!), plus Andrea was so warm and kind--very impressive customer service. Especially considering the limitations of COVID, it was a really wonderful experience, and I'll definitely be going back and recommending it to friends

I love açaí bowls and since a friend told me how great KIVA’s are I gave it a go. It was definitely tasty but I found the pricing odd.
I ordered a bowl that had peanut butter in it and it was priced the same as the bowls with almond butter. I subbed the peanut butter for almond butter and they charged me more. That made no sense to me. I mean, if the peanut butter bowl cost less than sure! But it was the same as the almond butter to start with. I should have said something but I felt rushed by the gal taking my order. Next time I’ll just stick to a bowl that already has almond butter.

My family and I tried KIVA when they were participating in a Dine Out event for local non-profit Store to Door (donating portion of their day's sales), and I am so glad we did! What an amazing place--so warm and serene and peaceful. If you love tea, this is the place for you. And even if you don't, they make great coffee, and have a great selection of food. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and made each person feel special. The granola is delicious! I will definitely be back again. This is a great place to take friends to catch up.

KIVA is an oasis! I used to work in the neighborhood and I'd go there about once a week to get their lunch special, which was always fabulous and affordable. Although I've never gotten any services there (it's a day spa!) I'm sure they're wonderful as well. Incredible selection of teas and a very relaxing & hip environment. Great place to meet a friend / business for lunch. They are also very involved in the community and support Store to Door - a nonprofit that delivers groceries to shut in elders and people with disabilities. Good food, good space, good people!
Jordan Cuskey
This is hands down my favorite spot for smoothie bowls in portland. Their acai bowls are perfectly delicious and filling. Their rose latte, almond butter maca smoothie, and vegan treats are also delicious. The service is good and there is nice outdoor seating.
Irene S
Love Kiva, a great addition to the neighborhood. Have had lovely massages, great facials, and of course the food. Smoothies, especially the wicked witch, are delicious. Rice bowls and soup have always been fantastic. Nicely curated selection of pastries. One of our favorite spots.

Good people.
3 stars a bit pricey

Great Tea Bar, Day Spa and Cafe! Healthy and yummy options from Breakfast to Lunch and early Dinner. Big Selection of fine teas, black/white/green/herbal and all Espresso Drinks you can imagine are served by kind people behind the counter.
The Day Spa Section offers Facial, Massage and a Foot Sanctuary. I had a great deep tissue and a hot stone massage and it was one of the best Massages I ever had.
I highly recommend this place!
Mother's Day is coming up and they offer a wonderful HIGH TEA. RSVP necessary. :))

I really want to love this place and see it succeed, but every single time I've been in, I've waited over 20 minutes to get my order. I'm simply ordering tea and a pastry to go. I get that its a day spa and intended for sit down and enjoy sort of place, but 20 minutes for an order to go is just too long. I feel absolutely terrible for the poor girl behind the counter doing the best she can to serve the customers all by herself. This place has so much potential, great food, great tea selection, friendly staff, but its being mis-managed by being understaffed and unorganized.
Marjie Van Der Laan
Beautiful spa in the back with tall ceilings, low lighting and a shower if you need it after your massage or facial. Products used for the massages are lovely and not too perfumy/old/or odd. Food in the cafe is fresh and delicious. Today I had the Asian Bowl and it had a heavy amount of vegetables and about a half cup of brown rice - not too much rice and barely any veges like some places. They have water available with an ever-changing add in. Sometimes it is cucumber and mint, today it was classic lemon. They have two women working behind the counter and another in the kitchen - not at all understaffed. The staff seem happy. Wonderful ambience with world music - today it is flamenco music. Highly recommended.

I went in for a Signature facial to soothe facial tension after a wisdom tooth extraction. My tension was completely alleviated! The product line they used felt and smelled incredible, both during and after my service. Kiva was incredible massuese, and every aspect of my experience was relaxing and luxurious, from my tea with my foot bath before my facial, to the warm oil scalp massage, and shoulder and neck massage while my masque set. I've been recommending them to everyone I know!
Paul O'Dell
Ahh Kiva.. I wasn't a massage type of guy, but my fiancee brought me here about a year ago, and I've turned into a massage kind of guy. The atmosphere is really conducive to relaxation, they're good at accommodating the "nervous about being in my underwear" types (like me) and the massages, the massages are just amazing. The cafe up front has a great selection of tea and snacks (which all seem to be included with massages). A really cool place.
Roberta Kanter
My massage was with Lindsay. She is a sweet gentle young soul and I loved chatting with her though her work was so effective I probably should have just remained silent to soak in every moment! Anyhow if you ask for Lindsay, she will soon be finished with her training in Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage. It is long continuous, flowing strokes, working gently and deeply. The energy flow helps to reduce mental and physical blockages. I could tell she was very focused, with a loving spirit.
This being my first visit to Kiva, I decided to order one of the exotic teas. I ordered the one for stamina - cannot name all the ingredients but they blended beautifully! Very fresh brew. Your tea arrives with a three hourglass timer, so you can decide how long you want to brew your tea, or do what's recommended.
After the massage I went to pay, but there was a bit of a delay because of a problem adding in the gift certificate. The woman at the register was apologetic and offered me another lovely cup of tea. I could have had anything I wanted but asked for Earl Gray, and it was great.
The only reason I didn't give the place five starts was the price compared to some of the other places I checked. Two others were only $5 less per hour. However, the spa is an amazing serene beautiful tranquil retreat behind the cafe. You would never imagine such a 100% silent place. I look forward to returning and also trying out the very interesting food-is-medicine type of menu.

Such an amazing massage and experience! The ambiance is so lovely. Definitely going to be my go to spot for all spa needs! Such a beautiful space to relax in :) thank you!

This was my 14th wedding anniversary gift to my wife and she decided to take me instead of one of her girlfriends, so I got to enjoy her gift also. 😁 I did a lot of research before deciding to go here and was honestly sceptical at first whether it was worth the cost. My therapist Michelle was awesome, she was able to find all of my trouble areas and work them out, for the first time in years I've been able to turn my head in full range of motion without pain, not even chiropractic has been able to accomplish that. My wife got her massage next to me and her therapist William was equally awesome according to her testimony. This was the first time either of us had gotten hot stone massages and needless to say I'm hooked! Thank you Kiva spa for a wonderful experience.
Thankfully,
Greg

Kiva is amazing- best facial I've ever had
BoniJean Shultz
Calm and relaxing atmosphere. Never had a better full body massage. The couple's spa treatment was so romantic. The cafe has the best brown sugar Apple cider.
Heidi Kruck
I had a great experience here. There were some initial issues with my service, but they went above and beyond to remedy the situation. The massage and facial were top notch, and the cafe is fantastic. I will definitely be back.
Kirsten Bauer
I adore this place. Loved every treatment I ever have had. Plus, the food and drinks are spectacular. The shop is filled with great local products as well. My go to spa! The owner is divine! Best Facialist!
Paul Block
All good. Great counter take-away foods. Nossa FamiliA coffee.. Good selection of teas. Expert and good natured servers. And there's a small coffee, tea, and kitchen related market in the cafe. Great fun place to visit. Great gifts. And great quality coffee and foods.
Jordan Tull
The Powerhouse bowl is amazing but be prepared to wait 30+ minutes depending on how many customers arrived before you. Price went up 2$ today without any explanation. Consistency is an issue here and the wait times can be exhaustive - but I’m willing to be held hostage for the yummy health benefits. NW Portland, 1st world problems.
D Clark
What an amazing experience. My first facial, and it exceeded every expectation. Thank you, Kiva!
Patrick McNearney
Kiva is one of the nicest people you'll meet. It's a lovely cafe with big open windows, lots of healthy food options, and yummy loose leaf tea that you can enjoy before or after your spa treatment. Kiva does a great job building community which is much needed in Portland and has nothing but a great spirit. Also a nice place to go on a "girl's day" spa day as they have massage, soaks, wraps, foot treatments, and the cafe side as well. A 23rd gem.
Tayler Chumbley
Great tea, food is ok. The match a mint iced tea is to die for. The service used to be really great, but the last few times I went there the waitresses were quite rude, and one even hit my dog with a door without so much as an "oops".
Carol Densmore
Was visiting from out of town and was able to get in for a reflexology service. It was excellent! The spa service area is beautiful, peaceful, and calming. Will definitely return. The tea and breakfast was also delish!
Haden Bighouse
Emily is a fantastic therapist! She knew exactly when to apply adequate pressure and when to ease up. If you need a deep tissue massage she is your gal.

Kiva provides a wonderful, curated, safe experience; it is a true oasis (especially in these rough times). The service is provided with such care, personalization, and understanding. I always feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and so relaxed during and afterwards.

Best massage I have ever had (thank you Mary L.). The cafe/store is also really delightful. I have been looking for a spot like this since about 2011, and it's exactly the vibe and provides the services I was looking for.
