This would’ve been 5 stars and I would definitely recommend. The food was all around delicious. My halibut was a little dry and they served it with no sauce, because the kitchen was too lazy to make more. The fry mix was excellent as well as the she crab soup and risotto! There were some lack of service we believe she could’ve been new. All around they did the right thing the atmosphere is gorgeous!

My wife and I had dinner here for our anniversary yesterday. The weather was so nice that we decided to eat outside on the deck. The deck is huge, and has several large circular shaped tables which include fire pits in the center. The atmosphere was enchanting and romantic. The menu was impressive in choices. As a local; you know the butterfly fried shrimp are a must try 😋. It's just good fried shrimp! In addition to the appetizer shrimp, I had the special fish of the night; which was a baked whole red snapper over vegetables and my wife ordered the halibut and vegetables. We were both delighted with the flavor........the red snapper was light and flaky and the halibut was creamy and savory. We were so full after the feast, that we decided to skip coffee and dessert at the end of the meal. The evening flowed together to create a perfect memory for each of us and we both want to thank our amazing waiter Larry for his humor and professionalism. What a delight!

This was our first time visiting Steinhilber's. Service was impeccable!! My husband and I both ordered the fried seafood platters. The portions were large and was absolutely delicious! We also ordered the oysters Rockefeller for our appetizer. If I'm being completely honest it wasn't that good. The oyster pieces were small and there was way too much sauce. Overall we had an excellent experience and will definitely return.

This is a very eclectic placej. It's buried in a residential neighborhood. They have great outdoor dining if the weather permits and a very nice back grass area that you can walk around near water. I found the food to be very high quality and the vegetables be from their local garden. The service was on point no issues there. Pricing, check their online menu, it can be a little expensive. With tip it's about $100 per person with drinks. The interior amniance and the price points just don't match up for me. I Think they should spend little bit more effort on the interior getting it to match their high-end menu.

Great food, just a bit overpriced. Cocktails were good and strong, but also pretty tart. Pomegranate salad was nice. Entrees of butternut squash ravioli, beef Wellington, and side order of half lobster Thermidor were all fantastic, just, like I said, seemed a bit pricey. Bread basket was very nice, don't miss out on it, apparently it's by request only. Lava cake and dessert drink were pretty good, didn't taste any Chambord in the lava cake, but it is still a tasty chocolatey option. Service was just okay, seemed like our waitress maybe had too many tables or just wasn't checking in very often. Definitely worth a visit despite a couple drawbacks, also nice location on the water with lots of outdoor seating. Only place in the area I've seen lobster therm offered and it was very good, worth it for this alone if you haven't had it before.

What a beautiful spot! I have never heard of this and probably would have never found it but thankfully my fiance's aunt suggested this place. It's a little weird you drive through a neighborhood and at the end of the street is the restaurant. By the time we got there it was night time. It would be nice if they added some kind of lighting in the graveled parking lot because it was super dark and hard to see when walking up. There is valet service though, which you drive right up to the entrance. The food was amazing! I got the halibut dinner. Everyone's food was amazing and they like it as well. We also sat outside near the water which was a beautiful scenery. They had firepits tables as well. We also got dessert, the carrot cake which was very rich, the key lime pie, just the right amount of key lime, and the lava, which was super good too. The price was reasonable for the food we got. Super delicious. Highly recommend.

Comes off as an "upscale" restaurant. It is really laid back with a flair. The menu is a beautiful arrangement of dishes and the cocktails were made to perfection. We ordered the beef Wellington and rock fish. Cooked gorgeously and the sauces paired well with the food. Oysters were fresh. I was not a fan of the dessert because well...I don't really like it but the party did.

My grandparents and parents have enjoyed this place for generations but the first time I was able to experience them was 7 years ago when my now husband, took me on our first date here. We've celebrated almost every anniversary dinner here, friends birthdays, and other special occasions but Last night, we celebrated our first wedding anniversary. The service is ALWAYS top notch and the food has never been short of incredible. We had the butterfly fried shrimp for an appetizer (as we always do). For the entrée my husband ordered a dinner special of Rockfish and succotash, and I ordered the Tomahawk with a twice baked potato. I completely didn't pay attention to the menu and had no idea it came with sides, nor did I realize just how big it would be. But for reference, my husband's plate is a normal size lol. While I absolutely didn't even eat a quarter of my plate, it was all phenomenal and it came home in a doggie bag. We also had the Key Lime Delight pie and a Kahlua Coffee Chocolate mouse pie which were also *muah chefs kiss*👌👌👌 My ONLY request would be to bring back the homemade Strawberry Shortcake w/ vanilla ice cream that they used to make. It was truly THE BEST in the area and when my husband took me on our first date it was for dessert and drinks so it's a little sentimental to me too. But I will forever recommended this beautiful and long standing establishment!

Outstanding service from the staff and very professional waiters and waitresses. The environment , the decor is pretty cool as well . Me and my family enjoyed every bit of it. Highly recommend although it’s a bit pricey but it’s worth it .

My wife and I went here for our Anniversary dinner and it was spectacular. The food was delicious, the service was amazing, and the atmosphere was beautiful. I had the crab cake dinner with an extra big scallop on the side and it was phenomenal. Views of the lynnhaven river and very nice garden scenery as well. It was a great experience!

Steinhilber's is an absolute gem. So unique, and for sure a staple in the community. It was described to me as iconic, and I could not agree more. The service was above excellent, the food was terrific, and the atmosphere was top tier. The outside patio is fantastic with their fire pits for cold and comfy nights. *Company sponsored Dinner* (Xarelto). So this Restaurant has all the Good Vibes! It's like a hidden gem, nestled quietly within an ordinary neighborhood. Though I was seated in a private room, this private room had a nice view of their patio and it's Gorgeous, I really wanted to be out there instead, near the fire pits and all the magical Christmas lights and lighting decorations, it really was beautiful. I'll be sure to sit on the patio next time. The private room that I was in was very beautiful and tastefully decorated. Everything I ate was delicious and I enjoyed all the wines I drank that night. I also REALLY enjoy fresh baked breads, they presented a variety of fresh warm breads that were very good. I had the New York Strip for my main entrée and it was Amazing, tender and cooked perfectly. Lastly the Apple Pie was SO DELICIOUS, I could have ate desert first!!!! It was that good. Give this place a go!!

If you're a huge fan of seafood, I cannot recommend this place higher. They have a long menu of everyone's seafood favorites including shrimp, crab cakes and any fish you could imagine. The steak menu is a bit limited and unfortunately no sirloin. The dessert menu includes every decadent favorite and the most beautiful display for creme Brule I have ever seen. I highly recommend this venue for ypur next romantic outing as the river view is gorgeous and is a great wedding venue.

We decided to celebrate a special occasion at Steinhilber’s recently! We could not have been happier with the service, quality, and overall experience. Larry and Douglas were super professional, attentive, and downright awesome! The atmosphere, ambiance, and food were simply spectacular! The restaurant is truly an experience worth repeating. It’s worth noting how festive and well decorated the restaurant was for the season! That definitely topped off the experience! Way to go:)

Very nice fine dining rhis place has amazing amazing food amazing service personal shoutout to Rajeeb he took care of us with great effort I definitely recommend the outdoor patio with the fire pit sets the tone and the mood for whatever the rest of the night may entail but if you want one of the bigger steaks you may wanna order it prior to getting there if you want it past rare but other than that an amazing experience and will definitely comeback here time and time again whether I'm alone or with a group...

Honestly 5 stars all around for me. From the hostess offering 2 different tables of my liking upon entrance. To Emily being an attentive waitress and Alexius(sorry if I spelled it wrong) she was amazing and so helpful. Huge kudos to the chef for that night (short rib over mushroom risotto w/ lump crab, lasagna, ny strip, and creme brulee we're out of this world. Also Mrs.Kelly the manager personally greeted our table and made me feel special on our birthday 🎉 great first impression ❤️

I’m so glad. So so soooo glad i decided on this restaurant. With soooo many choices. This one is a winner !! From the scenery to the atmosphere to the dining experience and staff it was a 10/10. I was here celebrating my huge job promotion and this was my first time at steinys. Speaking of firsts, everything we tried was a first. I’ve never had red snapper before and my husband never had cod and they did not disappoint. The waiter thoroughly explained all the specials and descriptions of dishes. Everything was delicious. Literally speechless. Will return.!!

Had a very different experience than the last few recent bad reviews. Wife took me here for my bday dinner. Service was very good, its a well oiled machine. We got the oysters rockefeller and really enjoyed them. We both had steaks with twice baked potatoes and asparagus. I was disappointed in the size of the potato…you get only a half of a reallyyyy small potato, but it was still good. And only 3 pieces of asparagus. The steak was probably 16 oz and was very good. Serving size could be a little better for the sides, but overall really good dinner. The grounds are also really nice, scenic and cozy. This was our first time, and we will return.

My husband and I celebrated our 34th anniversary here. Everything was amazing from getting seated to the appetizers to the meal itself. The chef even stopped by and spoke to us which I thought was very nice as busy as it was. This was definitely the first time I have ever taken pictures of our food. It was so beautifully arranged we hated cutting into it. It was so good I usually give my husband a good chunk of my food but I only let them have a taste. And I didn’t want to do that but it was our anniversary😜 They even brought us out a celebratory dessert which was very thoughtful! Definitely wasn’t expecting that. I have to say that the weight staff is the best I have ever seen!!! We were so entertained by watching them almost do a dance is they moved around with such ease and elegance almost a weird word for watching the wait staff but I just thought they were amazing! We had people pouring our water that weren’t even part of our table but stop to talk to us we could ask a question and they were just a phenomenal group. We haven’t been to Steinhilber’s in many years. But this was so wonderful that we plan on going back with some friends very soon! Kudos to the chef and his staff the wait staff and the managers!

My first time there and first impressions play an important role. The food was excellent! They could improve on service a little more. Drinks took forever. Our server was okay, I don’t know if she just started, she needs to be a little more organized. All around, it was nice, seated downstairs which was a lot quieter.

I like Steinhilber’s and have been a few times for parties and events as well as restaurant weeks. Service is always consistently good and the food is delicious. Their fried shrimp ARE that good. They’re huge and served with a dipping sauce that’s delish and pairs well with them. Their steak is excellent and I loveeee their salmon. Last weekend I attended a big private party in the room downstairs by the bathroom and had garden salad, rolls, salmon with potatoes, and apple pie. Everything was excellent. The salmon was a huge portion and was top quality, cut with a knife and very flavorful. My boyfriend got the filet and chocolate delight. We were both very happy with our meals. I’ve attended small events in the side room just off the hostess station and equally enjoyed delicious appetizers and have attended one on one dinners as well. Love the location in Thalia on the water with. a beautiful view. It’s a popular wedding dinner spot so you’ll typically see that on weekends if you dine here. It’s old-world classic charm and the prices are high, but the food and service are good and it’s a nice night out every now and again

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at Steiny's (Steinhilbers). It was absolutely magical. My parents can't stop telling their friends and family (who couldn't attend) how beautiful it was and Jessica (the event director) is spectacular and so accommodating. EVERYBODY loved their food and RAVED about the Prime Rib and Jumbo Shrimp. We were worried that the wine cellar might not meet all our expectations and the exceeded them. By the way ladies, the bathroom down there is a LOUNGE! This place was perfect and I plan to come back for renewals down the road!!

Took my wife on a date here and was not disappointed. The food was great, the wine selections are awesome, the carrot cake was amazing! The only small complaint was we were seated close to a large (and loud) party and, at some points of our night, could not hear each other talk. We like to get away from the kids by going on dates and sometimes this is the only time we can have good conversations. It was mildly irritating. Other than that, our servers were very professional and patient. We will definitely come back and try for a more (quiet) romantic evening.

Went out for an anniversary dinner last night, first timers. Wine cellar was nice and quiet. Oysters Rockefeller were amazing, short rib was coming apart no knife needed, the strip was cooked to perfection. Immaculate service, I wish I remembered the guys name, because we was quick and 100% on point and gave wonderful wine recommendations. Will definitely be back.

Recently moved to VA Beach. Steinhilber's came highly recommended. They didn't disappoint. The Rockfish and Salmon were delicious. The ambiance was great and Service was first rate. Tim M and his colleague were our servers and were very knowledgeable about the menu and were both friendly and very professional. Definitely on our list of places to visit again. Highly recommend.

The ambience is perfect at this charming, historic restaurant. The food here is so good - and the portions are huge! I got the steak and had to box up more than half of it to bring home (where it tasted even better the next day!). It's probably because I had one too many of their delicious dinner rolls! I definitely recommend sitting outdoor so you can watch the sunset and enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the water and side gardens. There were lots of fragrant flowers and herbs planted everywhere. I love that the cocktails used the herbs grown from their garden. Super impressive and I would definitely recommend going!

I would have given a 2, but the service was great, so I added another star. Cameron our server was very attentive, knowledgeable, and kind. The food however was subpar. It was lacking seasoning, creativity, and freshness. I waited years to dine here and to say I am disappointed is an understatement. Skip over the 4 and 5-star ratings and hone in on the 1-3. The truth lies there.

Blown away. I had a little dinner to myself after driving 5 hours from baltimore and I googled what was open (it was on the later side) with oysters and this gem just popped right up… Truly blown away. I had the Caprese salad, the burrata was homemade and the tomatoes and basil was from their garden… Then I got the raw oysters, a crabcake and took the Keylime pie home. Just very exquisite tastes, especially with the wine from New Zealand. I felt like I was in heaven. Their crabcake was so soft and buttery, as were the oysters (garnished with arugula…BRILLIANT The staff were so kind, and my server Deon is so warm and attentive..You guys are truly killing it (No the balsamic glaze on the salad was perfect but I could not help but take a bite before I took the picture)

We just spent our 25th anniversary here for dinner. The food is FANTASTIC and delicious the staff were all very friendly, accommodating and professional, we had a wonderful experience tonight and will return! I had Oysters Rockefeller and She Crab Soup, my husband had a HUGE steak dinner and we had apple pie for dessert. We can highly recommend these dishes :) A wonderful 25year anniversary celebration for us, thank you.

Elegant Fine Dining! Looking for an upscale restaurant in a peaceful part of town? Steinhiber's is the place to go! The location is perfect in the back of the neighborhood near the water. The atmosphere was very cozy and luxury style with the white table covers. The staff was exceptional!!!! We had "The Best" team working with us! Cameron and Jayla were on point! The way they served our table was like they were doing a dance. They were very in sync with each other and timing was everything. (Dynamic Duo - they work very well as a team) Now, the food... DELICIOUS! We had the She- Crab Soup and the Crab cake. Both menu items were delicious but the She-Crab Soup was the BEST I have ever had. We ordered dessert as well, but we had to get that to go because we could not eat another bite. Definitely a place to visit for special occasions!

Definitely NOT safe place for someone who has mobility impairments. No handicap bathroom facilities. Lots of steps. Food way too salty. I had to take meds due to the amount of salt in the foods. I will need to treat myself for the excess salt for a few days.

Had fried shrimp dinner. Was very good, except only a double baked potato was on plate. LOTS of bread but NO green veggies offered. The 2 square pcs of toasted bread could chip your teeth. For what one pays for dinner I expect more. It is obvious the prices are required to pay for all the staff, pour water, bring bread & take order. Need to make a few adjustments.

Enjoyed a beautiful evening on the patio followed by a walk around the property. The food and service were outstanding! The owner stopped at our table to check on the things and the staff was very knowledgable and attentive. The butterflied shrimp was every bit as good as the hype! Looking forward to our next visit!

Nice atmosphere but very pricey. Food did not live up to the reputation. Shecrab soup was served cold and had to return. Once received hot, it was fine. I just was not impressed with the flavor of the food. Probably won't return.

Our food was not hot enough when it was brought out to us. I also felt a little uncomfortable because of other customers attending the restaurant. There was only one bathroom stall in the restroom which was very inconvenient because there was a line and a long wait to be able to use it.

I found out about this place through the Verizonup rewards program which I received super tickets for dinner for two. Instead of dinner for 2, we made it a party of 5 - and brought our children along with us to this wonderful establishment. Our waiter, Josh, made our experience even more memorable. He did such a wonderful job and made our dining experience fabulous. We had a five course meal, and I made sure I took pictures of each dish. The only course I was not fond of was the third course, however everything else was over the top - AMAZING. I would highly recommend coming to this establishment. Fair warning - be prepared to spend money. The prices are not McDonald's prices and the food is not McDonald's food quality. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent staff. The restaurant offers a comfortable atmosphere (inside and out) that my family and I enjoyed. As a family, we voted we would return again. Thank you Verizon for this wonderful experience, and than you Steinbilber for such a wonderful experience.

The food wasn't bad but could lose some of the char my steak potatoes and vegetables had the same taste. Some of the vegetables were burnt which wasn't very appealing. But everything else was great.

Gorgeous outside patio area, inside is equally beautiful. Attentive wait staff and excellent service. We ordered the steak dinner for two and it was delicious. All steak is aged a minimum of 35 days so it's super tender and moist. Definitely recommend for a date night. This place can also accommodate large groups, but make a reservation beforehand. I'm not sure if it's kid-friendly, I didn't see anything on the menu for them and this place is a bit too fancy for small ones.

Delicious family dinner. I chose the restaurant week choice. The fried butterfly shrimp is fantastic. The salad was mediocre. The steak was tender and well seasoned. Surprised to say the cheesecake dessert was not good. My wife ordered a special request - the special seafood combination and loved it. Creamed spinach is fabulous. Service was great. Fine dining at it's best. The location provides a tucked away hidden little treasure. It's the bright light shining in the middle of a dark residential neighborhood. Food is delicious. I had the filet Rossini and my wife had a pasta dish that I can't remember the name of, but consisted of fettuccini noodles with red peppers and kale with scallops and shrimp on the side. My steak was cooked to perfection and was extremely tender. My wife's pasta was creamy and full of flavor. The calamari was light and flaky and came with a superb white sauce. They have a very broad wine selection to satisfy whatever you're in the mood for. As for the service, the wait staff is very well trained and very professional. They gave us the right amount of attention without being overbearing. Parking isn't that great but don't let that stop you from visiting at least once. There is an upstairs dining area that is mostly for larger parties as well as a basement dining area mostly for smaller parties. The outside dining area is very nice. This place is perfect for a date night or any special occasion.

Fantastic food and fantastic service! Pricey but worth it. Many of their menu items are prepared with seasonal and locally sourced foods; they even have their own garden on site where they grow several types of vegetables through the spring and summer. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for fine dining in the area. I can certainly see why this establishment has been around for 80 years. Definitely 5 stars. Just superb.

From the food to the service, everything about our dinner was excellent. The severs really try and make your visit memorable. For example, I asked our server assistant to take our picture because it was my wife's birthday. She did, without hesitation. Then, when my wife ordered her dessert, she had put a candle on top and wished her a very happy birthday. Even though I had to send my steak back because it was overcooked, they remade my order in record time and it was delicious.

The venue is located in a non commercialised area, kind of like a house turned into a restaurant with a large backyard and access to lake. The building itself has an old interior. Very warm and special. Food was excellent and I really liked the experience.

My wife took me to Steinhilbers for my birthday dinner on 9/17/2022. We thoroughly enjoyed the nice outdoor surroundings and the waitress was very nice. I thought the dinner was ok but nothing terribly special. My wife is vegan and we went to Steinhilbers because of the vegan option on the menu. She was told after we were seated that the vegan menu option was not available because they didn't have all the ingredients. What?? They did their best to come up with an eggplant meal of sorts. While it was colorful it wasn't her favorite meal. I had the fried seafood platter for $41. What I was very surprised at was for this price there was no before dinner salad that came with the meal and no side such as a bake potato or something. I literally got only the entree. Most all decent restaurants will offer a salad and side dish that comes with the meal. We will not likely go back but again the fried seafood was ok.

First time to Steinhilbers and it WONT be the last…from the minute you walk in , to the minute you leave is impeccable service!!! The food is phenominal… my husband had the ribeye and I had the beef Wellington… both in which we the best we have had at any restaurant EVER!! The sangrias were EXCELLENT!!! Not only was the food and drink good… we had appetizer fantail shrimp and it was a gustatory experience!!! The service was impeccable, we like how they gave you your own bottle of water, so you didn’t have to ask for a refill…upon leaving we went outside and finished our sangria and what a BEAUTIFUL setting out side with fire tables and water views!!! If you have not been here, you need to experience!!! We never had to ask for anything , except the bread and the bread basket had 2 cornbread muffins, 2 rosemary bread(delicious)and 2 dinner rolls… prices are good and again, the service was top notch!!!! We will DEFINITELY BE BACK SOON!!! Thanks you to all the people that made such a GREAT dinner and memory for us!!! SEE YOU SOON!!!

We dined at Steinhilber's on Wednesday June 8th for my wife's birthday, and it was a superb experience. During these troubled times, all restaurants have been challenged with supply issues and personnel problems. Overall, the team served us well and the food was exquisite. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the country, and they clearly lived up to our expectations on our most recent visit.

The she crab soup was outstanding. Small pieces of crab was dispensed through out the soup and there was a nice amount of lump crabmeat spooned in the center of the bowl. I enjoyed taking a pieces of crabmeat into almost every spoonful of my creamy she crab soup. Sorry, but I didn't think about taking a photo of the soup. I did, however, take a picture of my seafood platter and Mike's as well. The shrimp and scallops were the best foods on the platter although a crab-cake, and a piece of whiting was included. As my side, I opted for a twice baked potato. The restaurant staff from the valet parking attendants to the hostess, servers, and the chef went all out to accommodate the guest of honor and his dining party. Thank you Michael Watson Sr. for so graciously insisting on covering my dinner even though we were celebrating YOUR RETIREMENT. Once again Congratulations on your retirement.

Mixed feelings. I love it in the summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the breeze and the atmosphere. The restaurant is located at the end of the residential neighborhood and that makes it very unique. You can even walk to the water. I was disappointed though in the restaurant week menu. Especially the main course of the fantail shrimp and potato. If that was my first experience I probably wouldn't come back However a la carte oyster Rockefeller were delicious and I still love that outside area.

Not a fan of the new menu. All our favorites were gone. Excellent service and atmosphere. Did not care for my meal:( Hi Brandi. The tuna and the filet mignon were my two favorites. The shrimp dinner was also not on the new menu. Although if you ask for it you can still get. ( the dinner shrimp were smaller than the appetizer shrimp we ordered). Also gone was the flounder, shrimp and grits, and surf and turf. I had the brisket risotto and it was mainly mushrooms, very little brisket. There are other items missing from the menu that is posted on your Facebook than the menu at the restaurant. Also now the bread is available by request only now. Not saying I won’t be back, just not excited.

We had our company event here (25 people) and the staff did a great job! They pulled out all stops to ensure everything went out without a hitch and the food was great and that shrimp was GREAT! Jessica Wallace, the Director of Events was great to work with and was very professional. She worked with us to stay within our budget while maximizing our experience. I would recommend for any function or a fancy date night.

2/16/2022. Food was great. We sat down and I've notice that 2 our couples sat down 20 minutes after us. Both couples got their food before us. I knew we ordered well ahead of them. Took close to 50 minutes for our food to come to us. Waiter never came by to tell us about where our dishes are or why it took so long. Very disappointing since I've been here before and had great service and food. I was more upset with myself since it was my wife birthday dinner and was expecting a wonderful night. Update on review. I am happy that the General manager reached out to us. She was very upset with how things where handled and promised to look into the mishap. I believe I had an adequate experience here. It was definitely worth a try, but I was a little disappointed with the flavor of the food overall. We got the fry mix, which was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of seasoning, a great way to start dinner off. However, the steaks and family sized risotto were both very underseasoned leaving them with a lack of flavor. While they do include salt and pepper on the table, this should not be necessary with this caliber of restaurant with the associated cost per plate. The mixed drinks were made well and all came out tasting fresh. The restaurant itself is quite small inside with wood paneling and wooden floors. Therefore, while I was there it tended to be a little loud since the tables were quite close to each other. Overall the experience was alright.

Unfortunately, this was not the Steinhilber's we had enjoyed in the past. We have been many times for various family occasions. We had to wait over 90 minutes for our food and when it came my shrimp plate had obviously been sitting somewhere for a while as it was almost cold. (And that is one of their signature dishes. Also not the same quality as the jumbo fantail shrimp we have had in the past.) The mousaka (not to be recommended here) was actually like mousaka soup. Mousaka in every other restaurant is layers of potatoes, eggplant, and meat and plated. This was served in a bowl, very soupy, and all the ingredients mixed in together. I'm not sure the chef that night knew how to fix mousaka. Maybe this was just an off night. A lot of "busy" waiters rushing about serving drinks but it seemed like everyone was waiting a very long time for their food. I would be interested to know if there were challenges in this kitchen this night.

We came here during the week for a birthday dinner. We were sat right away & greeted right away. The main server was a bit awkward and walked away from us a few times while in the middle of asking them for something. The food came out quick and the food was good. Our drink refills kept getting mixed up. One of us had sweet tea and the other unsweet. The main server caused confusion with the back-up server, Doug, on who had what. Didn’t seem to be much communication between the main and back-up and who had what. Doug was GREAT. Will be asking for Doug next time. No complaints on food, but the service was… just not what it could’ve been.

Service was outstanding, always ask for a reservation and ask for a window seat if you have two people. Great view and very romantic with a fireplace burning nicely on one side of the room. Food was fantastic, my wife had the broiled seafood platter and I had the Rockfish that was perfect. Of course always get the half dozen fantail shrimp for an appetizer, you will not find any better ANYWHERE. The blueberry pie with lemon curd was unusual but very good. Also, the lava cake with ice cream was outstanding.

This place has the best fan tailed fried shrimp I’ve ever had 🍤! I have been here a few times but always in the evening and the ambiance is just magical. The prime rib was cooked to perfection so tender and juicy, the side dishes perfectly portioned. I am definitely going back to try the tomahawk steak. I would highly recommend this place, perfect for date night, anniversaries, business lunch or dinner, small wedding and reception. The views are beautiful!

One of the region's best kept secrets. We rented the wine cellar here for a meet & greet the day before our wedding. The the staff could not have been more accommodating and helpful.. The food was amazing... definitely make sure you add the shrimp to your menu. We added the bread pudding at the last minute, so glad we did it was a hit not one was left. My guest love the ambience and the fact that we could go out on the patio and also the lawn. We found the rental was affordable especially for this location and can't wait to plan the next event.

Having just moved to the area in August my husband went online looking for an outdoor seating, good rated restaurant for our 37 anniversary. As I looked online at the menu I was excited to see Lobster Thermidor, the one dish I only get on special occasions. Imagine my surprise when I get the lobster, fork and knife in hand and dig into…Nothing!!! Sure the sauce was tasty, but I think I counted three pieces of actual Lobster meat in there. Not worth the $55 we paid and what a disappointment!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Will definitely go back with friends and family because of the beautiful atmosphere but, sheesh what a ripoff that Lobster Thermidor was!!!!!!! And our waiter is another story, 😟👎

I was invited to a birthday dinner at this establishment. I had never been here or even heard of it for the most part. The directions from GPS took me through a neighborhood; no street lights; pitched black. I thought I was lost until I saw the lights covering the building like a blanket. Beautiful sight at night! And the fire pits in the middle of the tables, nice touch. Steinhilber’s Restaurant is an elegant place. And the food; your palate will not be disappointed. God bless the chefs and waitstaff! My experience at this restaurant was pleasurable. Will return in the near future.

My wife and I ate at Steinhilber’s on the first night of our anniversary trip to Virginia Beach. We had never been to Virginia Beach and I had found Steinhilber’s while looking for nice places to eat. This place hit the spot. We chose to eat outside which was fun. A pretty garden setting made for a nice backdrop to our meal. Our waitress, Desiree, and her assistant were very nice and attentive. We got fried crab cake balls as an appetizer that were delicious. My wife got a filet that was perfectly cooked. I got the prime rib that was cooked and seasoned just right. It was obvious that the restaurant was understaffed for the night and that those who were working were doing the job of two or three people at once. I have to say that they all did great. Desiree apologized several times if she felt like she took longer than usual to check on us. It was never a problem. Being in this pandemic has changed the food service industry, among several others, and we just appreciated the nice atmosphere and food for the night.

My partner surprised me with dinner here for my birthday. Being relatively new to the area, we weren't sure what to expect. We were not disappointed. The service was great from the moment we walked in the door until the moment we left. Attentive without being intrusive, just the way it should be. Special kudos to our server, who having overheard mention of my birthday, added candles to my dessert. The food was great, and our view of the water and the blooming magnolias made it the perfect way to end the week. It reminded me of a similar, family owned restaurant from back home (which sadly no longer exists). Hopefully Steinhilbers will be around for another 80 years for us to enjoy.

The ambiance was just like I like it, dim lighting, window seating with a picturesque view and the wait staff dressed impeccably. The food was just ok but what was appalling was the different service we received from the diners that were seated after us. We were told that we had to order all courses together and we couldn't sub out sides for other sides but the diners behind us were treated like royalty. Not only did they get to order their apps first and later order their dinner, their server offered different options instead of the side listed. Once being a server myself I understand the business of tippng, lets just say they did not earn the 30% I normally give for good service.

I used to really love this place. Been twice in the last year and both times were aggravating. Main course coming out cold. The sides were cold. I told my server and her response was let me go warm it up. Really not a fan of my 50$ steak getting put in the microwave. After we were brought our food we never really saw the server again. Saddens me because this used to be my go to for fine dining. I hate making reviews like this but I am just annoyed about it. If I spend 250$ on dinner I expect a little better service and quality.

Went there for dinner on a hot summer evening. We initially sat outside but 2 of the 4 outdoor fans were broken down so It was extremely hot and stuffy. We asked to be moved inside and they were very accommodating and moved us in as soon as a table was available. The food was very good and the ambiance was refined. Our waiter was very nice and helpful. *2022 Update: Today was our first visit to Steinhilber’s after Covid. We had a pleasant evening but I was really upset by the gentleman who waited on us. When I asked whether the signature sauce contained any alcohol, we were told by him that it is a secret recipe and that he simply cannot divulge any ingredients or whether it contained any allergens.To quote his words: “ You either order it or you don’t.” This isn’t the kind of answer I was waiting to hear at a reputable restaurant . While I understand that the restaurant is maintaining its traditions but some people have severe allergies/dietary restrictions/religious beliefs and your answer was condescending. The times are changing and you have to keep up with it.

Steinhilber's is a VB institution and for good reason. Quite literally the best fried shrimp I've ever had. Their fried flounder was also extremely good. I posted a 1 star review back in May when I ordered some food delivered from Grubhub. I was disappointed in the meal. It was not edible. The owner sent me a gift card and an offer to try them again. This time I went to the restaurant and set outside and ate. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The ambiance was amazing as well. It was a beautiful day and sitting by the water was so peaceful. I had the seafood risotto and a pear martini. I highly recommend. I'm so glad I came back. This place is definitely a jewel. Attended a retirement presentation where the meal was included. The presentation was in the lower level which is obviously rented out for events. There was what looked like a full bar as part of the area. You could enter this area from either the interior set of stairs, or the exterior set of steps that led up to a beautiful back lawn with tree lighting. There was an outdoor seating area, and while we were there many people had eaten on the patio. It looked like there were some fire pits built into the outdoor tables. My girlfriend had the fillet minion and I had the pan-seared salmon. Both were served with mashed potatoes and green beans, And both were very good. My salmon was perfectly cooked and the balsamic drizzle was lovely. My girlfriend's fillet was cooked medium rare on point. The staff were all dressed uniformly in black-and-white. Everyone seemed efficient and all of them were polite, knowledgeable, and unintrusive while we ate which was after the presentation had concluded. I wasn't even thinking about doing the review, so I failed to photograph my meal. 😳 I will definitely be hoping to return on my own dime before I leave the area.

Steinhilber’s is a cute little place with beautiful landscaping. The inside felt small and crowded (they had at least one dining room closed), which was uncomfortable for me with the pandemic still on. The patio was beautiful but we were seated inside. I had the scallops and shrimp risotto, which was good (scallops were perfect), and a side of asparagus which was perfect. My partner got the filet mignon; he said it was very good. Overall, I would like to see the building updated a little bit inside. The staff was friendly, the food was reasonably quick coming out, and everything was clean. It seems to be a popular anniversary dinner date place, but I will probably go back for lunch or brunch rather than a special occasion.

Sometimes you revisit an old favorite, and it disappoints, NOT SO WITH STEINHILBER'S!! It's been over 30 years and they're as excellent as ever! The service was friendly and efficient. The staff took interest in our preferences. We had a window table with a pleasing view off river. My wife and I ordered a Caesar salad and it was as authentic as I remembered (and delicious). I had a crab cake appetizer with was outstanding (not too much filler). The house sauce for the crab cakes is a great enhancement. For our main courses she had fried flounder w/ corn fritters and twice baked potato and I had fried butterfly shrimp w/ twice baked potato. The breading of shrimp was light and they were hot and delicious. My wife rarely orders fish, yet she raved about their flounder and "just the right amount" of breading. We shared a warm chocolate lava cake (w/ice cream on top) for dessert. The decor was warm, friendly, and elegant. Overall, it was an extremely enjoyable dining experience. I'm so glad this gem of a restaurant is well sustained!

Today was my initial introduction to Steinhilber's Restaurant. I was pretty impressed! I was born and raised in Chicago. Hence, Ive had the pleasure of experiencing some of the best food in the country. Steinhilber's stands up there with the giants; like RPM Steak, Gibson's, and Joe's. Having said that, the ambiance is quite different. Steinhilber's is a hidden gem, litterally hiding amongst single family homes, nestled in a quaint neighborhood. That's all I'm gonna say. Definitely check it out for yourself. I guarantee an unforgettable evening.

We rented the Wine Cellar for an event. The space was beautiful and opened out into the gardens and the view of the water. There were flowers everywhere and lights in the trees. A great space for pictures. I am not a party planner at all. Jessica on staff took over and handled everything. She made the process stress free for me. The food was in large servings an delicious. There was something for everyone. I am used to the vegan options being unimaginative but their cauliflower steaks were the best I have ever had. The prime rib was well received as well. The servers were on top of their game and never let a cup go dry. Can’t say enough about the evening. I highly recommend them.

My man made reservations for my birthday dinner. Everything was beautiful from beginning to end. We had a very nice lady come over and talk to us. She was there with her husband and said they had been eating there since 1972😊 She offered to take pics for us if we needed. Considering this to be an upscale restaurant, I expected much more. However, it was not a bad experience. Here are some pros and cons Cons: 1. Glasses, plates and silverware were not polished. Something you don't typically see at fine dining. 2. An appetizer of 6 shrimps costs $24. Which, if they were prepared in some extravagant way, I wouldn't mind paying the price. BUT, they were just fried jumbo shrimps you can find at your local outback. 3. Food presentation lacks tremendously. Visual aesthetic is important at any upscale restaurant. I took my family here for fathers day and each of the entree looked thoughtfully thrown together. 4. After trying each dish, I thought the meals were rather bland. Pros: 1. Located behind a nice and quiet neighborhood with patio seats. 2. The restaurant offers complimentary valet parking. 3. Exceptional service. 4. Great selection of wines. 5. Decent selection of seafood.

One of the best kept secrets in Virginia Beach. I have lived here over 20 years and just now finding this place. The food is top notch and flagrant. The taste was spot on and the portions were generous. Very lovely place especially for date nights. I went for my girlfriend's birthday and was simply amazed. The food came out quick and in order as far as appropriate timing of courses. And we also received an appetizer complimentary of the chef that was also spot on. We both ended up with Prime Rib cooked medium and we were certainly blown away at the quality and taste of it. We will be returning for special occasions or just for the great food and awesome service.

The food was splendid and we'll worth the price. The dessert was delicious and the service was highly professional and the view at night at the water was gorgeous. This is the best restaurant that I have been to in this area. It was a little cramped were we sat at but once we were seated it didn't bother us at all. A friend and I ate here last night, and we had a wonderful experience. To start, this place, seems to be nuzzled in between the docks on the main Thalia and creek and an old Thalia neighborhood; it is very picturesque. There is outdoor and indoor seating, but you should elect outdoor, temperature permitting. They do have tables with fire-pit centers, for when the cooler weather rolls around. The food is outstanding. We both had seafood dishes which were cooked perfectly and appropriately sided and accented. The pretzel bread they bring out for the table was also very delicious. Steinhilber's has a variegated wine menu with some delectable choices, and the server was actually knowledgeable enough to help with recommendations, even though the somm was out of town. I didn't get dessert but definitely will save room next time. There was on minor annoyance: our food took an exceedingly long time to come out (over 50 minutes after ordering). This has to be taken into consideration that there was a large party there with lots of guests; however, it was worth the wait.

Steinhilber's has a very romantic atmosphere and it's located off the beaten path. Use GPS. I attended a friend's birthday celebration. The staff was very attentive, courteous, and efficient. I ordered the seafood platter and it was seasoned well and the platter had more food than I could eat. The fish was tender, moist, and fried just right; so were the scallops and shrimp. I would definitely return. A little on the pricey side, but well worth it.

The fried calamari w tentacles! and prime rib were the best I've tasted anywhere. And, hot baked breads, muffins, cornbread, fritters, etc. Wife loved her broiled seafood platter and homegrown salad. Daughter loved the Brussel sprouts w bacon, +tuna. The whole place was nicely decorated for the Christmas holiday season and fireplace. What a hidden gem in the Thalia neighborhood! Driving through the beautiful residential area it's a surprise when you turn the corner to this beautiful restaurant on the bay. There's outside seating and plenty of seating in a beautiful old school main room with tons of windows. We had the halibut (I'm from Alaska so I'm halibut savvy!) which was delicious and the fried shrimp appetizer came highly recommended and didn't disappoint. The service was great, the cocktails amazing and we had a great table outside (but if it was hot, I'd prefer inside).Lovely restaurant, staff and location!

I love this place! Located near the water behind a quiet neighborhood, the ambience is very relaxing. The staff is always super friendly and professional. There’s not a lot of turnover of the staff either; I’ve seen some of the same faces since I first discovered the restaurant in 2008. And, I’m not usually a big seafood lover but their jumbo shrimp is the best I’ve EVER tasted. They have local selections of seafood to choose from and the menu also includes steak and pasta selections. I’m almost certain I’ve tried (and LOVED) nearly every dessert they have served!

I love the history here, and of course the location on the water is divine. The best part of the meal was the chef's addition of a tiny financier cake--it's just not seen often anymore and it was delicious. The tasting menu was uninspiring and although I knew the restaurant would be booked because of the holidays, I wasn't prepared for the cramped dining room or the rushed service. That being said, my Martini was sublime and a good time was had. And yes, their famous shrimp are a must-have.

My boyfriend and I came in as a late celebration of our anniversary. Service was wonderful, I dont remember her name, but our waitress was super sweet and kept us well attended to. The location/establishment itself is beautiful but the ambiance was weird. Maybe it was because our reservation was early (5:30)? It was super quiet and awkward to have conversation. The food presentation was great, I had the crab cakes, he had the filet mignon. The twice baked potatoes seemed old and bland. None of the food was half as good as I had expected, so I was pretty disappointed in that aspect. The wine was BOMB though, our server suggested Mt. Veeder, and we both loved it so much. I don't plan on returning.

Far away from any Mean Streets this place is a real gem. Waist coated waitress who really know old fashioned service and how to take care of their guests. My 10 ounce prime rib was perfectly prepared rare the way I like it and my daughters New York strip medium rare was absolutely delicious. Watch out for the gravel parking lot, they do have complimentary valet service. My first time there it won't be my last. Simply a great restaurant.

But he couldn't help that the kitchen was so slow (our dinner took an hour to arrive) and it wasn't crowded at all for a Friday night. When our food finally did come the waiter brought the wrong order for my husband. Our friend's salad was ridiculously small. The shrimp, which they are known for, were okay. But the price for 3 meals, water and a bottle of wine was $200 (before tip). Sorry to say the ambience doesn't make up for the slow service, food and high prices.

My husband and I came into town to celebrate out 27 year anniversary. We were staying at the Hyatt and the manager recommended this this restaurant. It was about 15 minutes away from 27th Street. It sits back in a old neighborhood, it reminds me of a very large home that sits next to a river. The atmosphere is breath taking. The wait staff was fantastic. The wine was clean and crisp. We chose to sit outside and tables we're covered in white linen tablecloth with the decor was extremely romantic. The appetizer, soup, and dinner was extremely delicious. Their prime rib is enormous for 10 ounce cooked perfectly. They're risotto was spot-on. There she crab soup was phenomenal. My husband had a beet salad with a roasted mushroom soup and beef tenderloins that melted in his mouth. We look forward to coming back when we were in town. Worth every penny. Highly recommend.

I had the duck and it was possibly the best I've ever had. My girlfriend had the salmon. She is a chef herself and had nothing but praise for the flavor and presentation of the dish. We also had the scallops as an appetizer and we're again, very impressed. I now know why Stienhilbers is a local staple and why it has been so successful for so many years. The food is as delicious today as it was. 30 years ago. Classics such as the fried butterfly shrimp which a lightly battered and so delicious. Their prime rib is so flavorful you could not ask for any better. I noticed on the menu the beef is from a farm in Charlottesville VA. The sides like mashed potatoes or baked potatoes are well done and tasty. To end the meal we had the Apple pie and it was such a great with a approximately 5 to 6 inch crusted pie, like a personal pie, served warm with ice cream was a nice finish to our evening. In true form of a classy restaurant the owner comes by to check that your meal and experience are going as expected. In summary this have excellent food prepared as it should be and they exemplify what service should be at a top notch restaurant.

I used to come here in the 1960s with my parents and order the fried shrimp, that's what I ordered tonight too. They did not disappoint, impeccable food and service! I love how they have not changed anything since the 1960s and probably earlier. The outside seating area is beautiful and the inside seating area is just as it was way back when. If you want a truly fine dining experience, go to Steinhilbers.

We usually only go once a year as a family group for my mom's Birthday. Everything that I've ever eaten there has been amazing. My mom's favorite are the butterflied shrimp. They have a nice selection of food and drink, including beers & wines. The service is always spot on with professional attention & personal interaction. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. My daughter met Bobby Bones on our last trip & he was nice enough to take a picture with her. If you want a very nice dining experience, this is the place.

I would rate it 4.3/5, only deduction was for overall value and ambience (outside dining in the summer I'm sure is better than the indoor room). All the food was very very good. My filet was as good as any, lobster tail was extremely small, "famous" shrimp were tasty but disappointingly small, crab cakes were just okay, potatoes aligot were by far the best side, Caesar salad was also really good. Drinks were really superb, 1 small ice cube in my scotch which is a true test of a bartender. Wait-staff was also top notch.

The best dining experience I have had in such a long time! A close friend of mine is having her wedding dinner here in a few weeks and I joined her and another friend since we had never been. Our waiter Larry was superb and his service couldn't have been more outstanding. The cocktails were excellent and worth the price. The She Crab Soup was divine. Oysters rockefeller and scallop appetizers were absolutely delicious. There were 3 of us, we shared a 6 course Chef's tasting menu special that included lamb chops, pappardelle pasta, salad, and dessert. With this option, we were able to try many different food selections. EVERYTHING was SO good!! I am a foodie, TRUST ME. I was completely and 100% satisfied and Stuffed! Not to mention, the decor inside was so rustic and adorable, the lake view is awesome, the ambience is just lovely. I had such a great time and i can't wait to take my family here!

One of the best meals I have had. My wife and I went there last night for our Valentines dinner. It was, as far as meals go, one of the best dates we have ever had. It was very pricey though. We paid $140 for dinner for 2. That included 2 appetizers and a couple of glasses of wine also. The atmosphere was nice. It was night time so we didn't get to see outdoors. My wife had the rockfist and I had the jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab meat. Both meals were absolutely perfect. We highly recommend this place for special occasions and such. Just know that you are going to pay for it.

We sat at the fire table outside started with pumpkin rolls with cinnamon butter. We ordered she crab soup as an appetizer, yum. Fried seafood platter came with 2 lg shrimp, a crabcake, 2 lg scallops(they could've been cooked a little longer for my taste), flounder and sauteed spinach. It was all delicious. It was quite the opposite, we ended up being the only.ones left In the room we were dining in. The water was gross, tasted like tap water. The shrimp were amazing, I tried the fried catfish it was good but not worth the price. It came with slaw which left much to be desired, it also came with corn fritters, that were also in the bread basket so for the price you'd think there was another side. I ordered my favorite dessert creme brulee it tasted burnt and like all of the vanilla bean had sank to the bottom, you could actually see all of the black specs at the bottom of the dish, it was very disappointing. I sent it back, the who I guess was the manager finally stopped by once she saw we were getting ready to leave and asked us how things were I let her know, I really was expecting a offer for a dessert to take home or something other than "oh, thanks for letting me know, cuz we wouldn't know if you didnt tell us" totally not handled in the way you would expect if you cared about customers returning to dine at your establishment. Probably wont go back here for a while, if ever. It's a nice place, but if the waiter always feels as if he's rushing you out and you cant find him and he doesnt stop by to ask if everything is okay when you're spending 80-100 for two, then IMO it's not worth it.

Outstanding! We recently enjoyed an outstanding dining experience at Steinhilber's. Although it was a bit windy and chilly outdoors that evening, we decided to dine at one of the outside fire pit seating areas. The service was uniformly excellent, and the environment warm and inviting. The appetizers and entrees lived up to their long-standing fine reputation and even exceeded my expectations. The deep-fried butterflied jumbo shrimp couldn't have been better, and the calamari was also superb. We enjoyed beef and seafood entrees and my seafood platter was definitely a big hit. The cocktails were great and the wine list extensive. It's not inexpensive, but I highly recommend Steinhilber's if you want one of the best dining experiences available in Virginia Beach!

I'd give this visit a 3.75 star. Service from the entire staff was great, our glasses and bread basket always full. Our plates were removed quickly and our food came out in a good time. The ceasar salad was a bit too anchovy for our tastes, but was very large, I'd suggest splitting one. The bread/cornbread were delicious along with the baked potatoes. The filet and the prime rib were tender and juicy, but should be for the price. We didn't enjoy the key lime pie as much as anticipated, it was very runny and compared to other key lime pie we have had, very tart. The drinks were pretty standard tasting, but pricey at $12-$13.50/each.

It appears that this once fine restaurant now caters to businesses and large events. Our guess is this has seriously affected the service and food quality for their other guests. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary last night and there were many problems. Menus were left at the table, the pepper grinder was empty, raw oysters were just ok, both steaks were way over done and had to be sent back, vegetable sides were left on the table to get cold while we waited on new steaks. Our waiter, though helpful, seemed unable to keep up with proper attention to the table. All in all, it was an ok evening, but the experience was flawed in so many areas it disparaged this once fine restaurant. In spite of this, the prices were very high and no effort was made to 'comp' anything. We expected the prices, but not for this level of service and food preparation. We will likely eat elsewhere in the future.

Definitely a higher end restaurant. You don't go to steinhilbers for just the food but for the overall experience. There is a deck with individual fire tables, the restaurant is on the water so it has a good view. Servers are professional. They are known for their shrimp but their steaks are equally perfect. Never have I left this restaurant feeling as if I didn't have a stellar experience.

Full disclosure: its hard for me to give a really good review on this place. I can say the location had a nice ambiance. It was clean and rustic feeling. I attended an event here and every single item on the menu had gluten or was pork/beef. I'm gf. I couldn't eat anything, at all at the event. It is always a bummer to me when restaurants (and event planners) aren't sensitive to dietary restrictions. I left the event and went somewhere else to eat. 🤷🏾‍♀️

My only constructive criticism is that they seem to be trying to play the "high class" service card but aren't executing on it very well; I would rather that they have more casual servers than to set expectations high (typically a tux implies a very strong attention to detail) and fail to deliver.

I have been going here for the last 15 years or so. Over the last few years it's just not been as good as it was in the past. I still like it, it's just not what it use to be. I use to always get the Seafood Au Gratin but they have removed that from the menu. I wish they would bring it back. This place still has great views and an attentive wait staff.

This is one of VA Beach's hidden gems. Located way back in the Thalia area on the Lynnhaven River, Steinhilber's has been doing business since 1939. It has been one of my family's go-to's for special occasions for many years. The fantail shrimp, seafood platter and prime rib were our group's choices for this visit. All were excellent, and prepared as desired. It can be a little pricey, dinner for two including adult beverages and desserts can cost about $100, but it is well worth it.
