Came here for birthday dinner, had valet parking, we had a reservation and were promptly seated, and food was so flavorful and above expectation! Every dish! From wine selection to appetizer to main meal!

The food here was very good. I had 3 different types of shrimp but I did thank the shrimp could have been cleaned a little better in the shrimp cocktail. The fried shrimp with the chili aioli was the best out of the three and I had shrimp and grits and the cocktail shrimp as well. The service was good but it did seem like our server was getting frustrated but I dont know what for. I would go back for the fried shrimp.

This is the grilled salmon with potatoes and acorn squash. One of the best salmon dishes I’ve tried. It is layered with tarragon butter, mushrooms, capers and tomatoes. The acorn squash sweetened with sugar and butter compliments the fish that was perfectly cooked. We tried the bixbie shrimp with chipotle aioli, calamari and the homemade mozzarella tomato basil dishes. The appetizers were delicious. The restaurant interior was welcoming and had a comfortable vibe throughout the night. No wonder this is a fave of many. Looking forward to another evening out at Coastal Grill.

Extremely good seafood in an atmosphere that could use some work (drop ceiling, older aesthetics). The service is truly amazing and the dishes are genuinely creative. It was very much a surprise how delicious everything was. If you go, expect an older clientele. One other thing to highlight is the drinks, especially the whiskey based ones. They're very, very good.

Coastal Grill is a must go to restaurant for those who want to have a great meal with great service and great atmosphere ! It's located in Virginia Beach on Great Neck Rd, between Shore Drive and First Colonial Rd . Not only were there several seafood options but you could also choose from lamb , duck , beef or vegetarian dishes . Everyone opted for seafood and we are all very pleased ! I had the fried oysters and they were cooked to perfection . Two others had the grouper and another had the salmon . Each dish came with a side dish of half a butternut squash baked with a brown sugar butter that tasted more like a dessert and broiled potatoes. Each were delicious ! Along with the valet parking and the wonderful atmosphere , you really must give this place a try ! Reservations are recommended !

It was good but not great: My expectations were met, but not exceeded. I felt a little noisy. I wanted a healthy meal, yet my salmon was too buttery, and sugar added to the squash . It was my wife's birthday 🎂 and she liked the shrimp dish.

Forever a favorite. Visited a few weeks ago in the new location. I live in Atlanta now and they relocated around the time I departed VB. The duck and salmon entrees are incredible. Worth the spend for any occasion (and honestly prices are more than reasonable for quality). Any low reviews are by crabs. You will never be disappointed!

I ordered a pick up so I cannot speak on the customer service per say. My selection was the grilled lamb with acorn butternut squash and potatoes. My rating is 5 because the food was good. Everything was flavorful and a good sizeable proportion. It was worth the money I spent.

First time experience was amazing. Service was incredible. Spencer went above and beyond in every way to make sure we were taken care of. The food was incredible and presentation was amazing. Highly recommend this if you are in the area and want to treat yourself to an amazing experience. Thanks Costal Grill and we will be back for sure.

Wish I could give Coastal a rating range. Normally, I am always in awe of the quality, and presentation, so yummy and beautiful! My go to place for deliciousness and decadence! I don't know what's happened, maybe it's COVID, but the last 3 times I've been there 2 were sub par; one of those times I sent the meat back because I could not even chew it. I can count on one hand the number of times Ive sent my food back in my 50+ years of eating fine dining. One thing is consistent, the wait staff is always top notch! Super friendly, honest, doting, but not in your face. Perfect! Most recently, we left hungry. I was looking forward to the acorn squash, always so buttery and sweet, but it came out so cold the brown sugar never even melted. None of us ate but a couple of bites. Portions, tiny! With the exception of the whole bronzino fish, the fish portions on the other dishes were very small. Not certain the rockfish or the flounder exceeded 2 oz. The trout, with head and tail in tack didn't even look like a keeper. All served with a side of 3 halves of baby, baby roasted red potatoes (I think the 3 pieces combined may have been smaller than a golf ball). While tasty, the ridiculous small quantity became the joke of the night. Even my favorite, the grilled avocado with balsamic was a disappointment. The fried calamari would have been lackluster if it weren't for the little cute fun snappy sweet peppers, which the waitress happily offered up and brought us extra peppers. Creme brulee for dessert was traditional and perfect! The apple cider old fashioneds are a good twist on the traditional, but seemed a bit watered down from previous nights. Overall, a disappointment. At $400 for 4 (before tip) with 2 cocktails each, with no leftovers, I would have expected to not be hungry 15 minutes after being home. Keep in mind Im a very tiny, petite lady, so if I was hungry imagine everyone else was far from satiated. In contrast, my prior experience was 10 stars! Beautiful delicious, plentiful! Ciopinno was out of this world and easily could have fed 4 with a small side salad each; loaded with crab, rockfish, lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp, etc. Waitress recommended the soft shell crab. It knocked our socks off, and I'm not usually a fan. We remarked how pretty even the bread looked. Server told us chef wouldn't let her serve it the first way she presented it, made her redo it. In contrast to the basic sliced, cold loafs we got this last time. The herb laden warm goat cheese with olives and peppers was fabulous and so satisfying. While 3 halves of potatoes, you can see each 1/2 piece was the size of a golf ball. The 2 of us had more drinks and left overs for days at less than $200. Posting pics of my good experience though pics don't do it justice, our last dinner wasn't picture worthy. Bottomline, it will be a pleasurable night out, but not sure these days if it's worth the price.

Grilled shrimp appetizer fantastic. Love the acorn squash. Had grilled Brussels sprouts that were scrumptious (had the shrimp appetizer as meal and ordered squash and sprouts als carte). Coastal Grill is one of our favorites.

A very nice place for dinner. I felt under dressed with a tshirt on. Decor is like your at the ocean, even with it down the street. A nice wine selection on hand. I had a special of pan seared flounder with an amazing sauce and squash! A friend love his swordfish. The have a small desert menu and it was not bad.

Exclusive restaurant with valet parking, excellent food and wine! The staff is amazing, very knowledgeable, kind and courteous! If you're looking for a fancy restaurant with a high end atmosphere this is a great place to check out! I had the NY strip steak, it came with freshly sliced corn off the cob and potatoes seasoned to perfection.

Such a wonderful dining experience. Decor is simple and sophisticated, perfect for a romantic dinner or a nice night out. Servers are attentive without hovering. And the best is the food of course. We had the baked goat cheese and garlic shrimp as apps followed by the grilled salmon and shrimp with grits. Food was simple but had our taste buds jumping for joy. Coastal Grill is a must in Virginia Beach.

The food was amazing. The prices a bit on the high side. Their insistence of giving just one check per table, not allowing individuals to pay for their own meal is very cumbersome. We had a group of 7 which included two couples and three singles. They will give separate checks for the same amount, which then puts the guests in a position of having to collect or pay to other guests to even it out. If nearly every other restaurant can give individual checks or divide the bills up that way, they should be able to as well.

Absolutely delicious dinner!!! This is a place for a special dinner! Four stars only because my delicious scallops were unnecessarily surrounded by too many green onions. They were a part of the butter sauce but overpowered the scallops. Moved them aside and the scallops were amazing! We will be back!

Kayla our waitress saved the evening. After a lot of confusion it was decided that a table of 4 would be set up in the other room. I requested that we sit n the main dining room and was told they were reserved. I explained we had made our reservations days ago and again requested to sit in the main dining room where there were 3 tables available. (Side note ) two tables of 4 remained empty when we left while others opened up) anyway after waiting 15 minutes for a table in the back room to be set up I finally insisted we be seated in the main dining room since now we had waited past our reservation time. After insisting a third time we were seated in the main dining room. Needless to say the evening did not start out well. I would have understood if I was told they were short staffed however seating us in another room out of site would not have helped that. Some one should be more diligent when taking reservations. On the plus side the valet was very pleasant, food was excellent and Kayla the waitress deserves a raise for how hard she worked. The hostess did tell us this was her first night and she was having difficulty. The manager should have been paying more attention or she should have called him. Except for the Kayla and the valet our initial contact when we checked in was a 2. Michele Fredericks.

A very nice seafood and more restaurant. White tablecloths inside and a small but comfortable outside dining area. Nicely done food, on the higher end of pricing but worth it in the context of the competition. The cocktails we had were very good, as was the rest of the meal. The portions are generous relative to other high-end restaurants. The mussel bowl appetizer is especially recommended!

Honestly one of the BEST restaurants I've eated at around here, and I do not give out 5 stars often. Very hard to get into though, you have to make a reservation far ahead of time. Food is fantastic no matter what you get. Definitely recommend seafood though. Only downside is the wait for the food is long. Our dinner from appetizers to dessert was around 3 hours. However, it makes a great time for spending time with family or the ones you love. Wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff.

Most tasty soft shell crabs in hampton roads. Only a bit disappointed that the crabs were much smaller than usual. Maybe it's early in the season and maybe the whales will be bigger in a few weeks.

Glad I made reservations. Even at 8pm it was busy. Our server was very professional and knowledgeable about the menu. I had the lamb feature, which was fantastic. My partner has dietary restrictions and the server was very helpful in navigating substitutions. A little loud and we were placed at a high top int he bar, but overall not too bad. A little pricey, but not so much when you consider the atmosphere, food quality and service. I'd definitely recommend.

Our annual trip to Virginia Beach always includes dinner at the Coastal Grill. Not a touristy restaurant, this is where the locals go to enjoy quality food and exceptional service.

Came here during vacation. The menu looked promising, but the execution of the food missed in some key spots. I ordered the peppered seared tuna and asked for it rare. It came out medium well. The flavor was good, but not cooked properly. My wife ordered shrimp and grits. The shrimp and sausage were good, but the texture of the grits was off. We had the carrot cake for dessert. It was laid down in the camel sauce, so the cake for soggy and the frosting was almost washed off. Plus, it tasted as though they simply used a frozen cake with a dollop of cool whip. The final item - I asked for a decaf coffee with dessert. They brought me a black tea instead. When I pointed this out (too late since nobody checked in on us), they apologized. But, even though they knew I didn't want it (wasn't what I ordered) and I didn't drink it, they still charged me for it. It seems like a lot of locals come here - lots of customers seemed to know the employees - seemingly regulars. I'm not sure why ... Very underwhelmed by the food and service. ☹️

Great food great service, waiter took the time to explain the menu thoroughly and all of the options available and was very polite and helpful, the environment is perfect for a romantic date with the great look and feel of the place to the fancy candlit tables. Food was absolutely great not the cheapest place in the world to eat but definitely worth the extra money if you want to treat yourself or someone to something nice. 10/10 would recommend

This was a great experience. We are visiting Virginia Beach and went there as a family. We had the Homemade Mozzarella, Tomato, & Basil, and the Garlic Shrimp with toasted crostini for appetizers. Followed by the Grilled Leg of Lamb, and Homemade Pasta with Grilled Shrimp. Everything was wonderful, and the service was absolutely fantastic. The venue is built in what used to be an old post office - absolutely beautiful. The portions were right sized, not too big, not too small. No deserts were offered and we didn't have any room left after dinner for desert. Highly recommend a visit.

The food was great. Service took some time. We were a party of 6 celebrating a birthday. We were charged an extra $4 per person for the cutting and plating of each slice of the birthday cake that we brought! I’ve been to many restaurants locally and internationally and found that highly unusual.

We had a reservation on 12/23 for 6:30pm that we had changed to 6:30 pm on 12/27. When we got there we were informed that our 12/27 6:30pm reservation was cancelled along with the reservation for 12/23. We did not cancel the 12/27 6:30pm reservation and, while the hostess did her best, we waited more than 35 mins to be seated. Then we waited an additional 10 min before we received water and had our drink order taken. Waited an additional 15 min before receiving our cocktails and having our order taken. Our food was timely and aside from an unnamed and unmentioned full pepper placed on my plate (I had the NY Strip) the food was absolutely delicious. My husband (he had the tuna filet) loves spicy food and peppers so I gave the pepper to him, which he ate. BIG MISTAKE… he had a horrible reaction. This has never happened. Upon examining it, we concluded, that it was not a jalapeño. There was absolutely NO MENTION of the pepper when I received my plate. This is absolutely concerning for people who could have an adverse reaction up to and including spawning a heart attack. My mother (she had the salmon) who frequents your establishment was, unfortunately, very displeased with the lack of compensation for the reservation snafu which was in no way our fault. We paid full price and our waitress was super sweet and was working incredibly hard and, in no way, should be penalized for this. This was not her fault.

We celebrated our 28th Wedding Anniversary at Coastal Grill. Our server Morgan was amazing and the food outstanding. My duck was perfectly cooked and the acorn squash with brown sugar was incredible. We brought an older vintage 3L 2998 Quintessa for wine which was opened and decanted properly.

This place is great. The food is excellent and fairly priced. Everyone is courteous and nice. Great updated and modern decor. The idea to have a valet for parking for everyone is great makes things a lot easier during busiest times. This place is great for everyday dinners or special nights. Definitely recommend .

Been to Coastal many times. Always a favorite of ours. Our most recent experience was not great. We ordered appetizers, the soft shell crab (our favorite) which was missing claws....and then we got two desserts. One was the strawberry shortcake which I always look forward to. However this time the shortbread was salty. Not just a tad salty. It was like the chef used salt instead of sugar. We told the waitress just as an FYI so they would not serve to other patrons. She asked if we wanted another, which made little sense because wouldn’t it be the same salty mess? We said we were okay. When we got our bill the shortcake was on it. Not that we expected anything, but you would think if a customer said something is beyond salty you wouldn’t charge them. I hope no one else ordered it that night. As we were leaving the waitress said “I hope you enjoyed everything.” Hmmm. We will obviously be back because it is one of our favorite spots, but that was not a great experience.

Much improved over old location. Had a great experience. Good wine, delicious soft shells and scallops. Terrific tomato salad. Waitress was very attentive and understanding. Had to correct an order and she was right on top of it. Loved the entire experience!

On the weekend, to begin pulling into the restaurant; Valet or park at your own accord? A VERY classy establishment. The ambiance is played throughout the restaurant. You can sit at the Bar or take a table to dine. On the weekend nights make sure you have a reservation to ensure a table for your party because it does get very busy. The Bartenders and Staff are VERY professional and knowledgeable. Their appetizers are incredible & the entrees/ specials are spectacular. However, every restaurant has their off days. I have only been disappointed once in the multiple times I've come here to dine. Quality wine list🍷. You will $pend for the quality/quantity of food however, it's worth it. Enjoy!

Tonight's dinner was absolutely divine at Coastal Grill! I decided to treat my mom to a lovely mother/daughter date night and couldn't have been more pleased. Morgan was our knowledgeable, kind and patient stellar server, making our night even more special. I always say, it's the people who make the great food, super. I had the mussels special (my bowl was overflowing with mussels!) and my mom chose the lamb chops off the restaurant week menu. Both dishes were out of this world! (Oh, and the acorn squash is everything you hear about and more.) Being my mother's first visit, she fell in love and wants to return with me sooner, rather than later. Thank you Coastal Grill and Morgan for treating us to a delicious night out!

My daughter's birthday dinner. From the friendly hostess that greeted & seated us to the fantastic desserts we all had a very pleasant, delicious experience. This is the 3rd dinner we have had at Coastal Grill and have always had a wonderful experience. I had the Branzino and honestly the best fish I have ever put in my mouth...and I have eaten a lot of fish in my time. All 5 of us had a different entree and there was no one unhappy. Our server (Michael) was wonderful; friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and cared that we were having a good experience. The cooks were willing to talk to us about the meal and how it was. I would highly recommend for a nice dinner out for any occasion.

I can say I was delighted to have this restaurant recommended to me by my neighbors. The staff is friendly and establishment is clean and well decorated. I ordered the Sea Bass and I could not have been more happy. Served whole with corn and potatoes, it was fall off the bone tender. I would highly recommend to others.

Coastal Grill is a lovely dinner destination. I ate here with my husband on a date while vacationing on the beach. The service was fantastic (and they offer valet parking, if you want it), the appetizer specials were very good (we enjoyed beet salad, butterfly fried shrimp), and the entrees were well portioned and good. If you can get an appetizer with the slices of goat cheese, that's a good choice. We really enjoyed the shellfish in chili broth, with clams, mussels, and shrimp. For dessert we had carrot cake sitting in a decadent rum sauce (I think it was rum sauce). Great evening start to finish.

First visit, just perfect! We met friends last night for a most enjoyable evening. Happily, they take reservations, but at 530 there were plenty of tables. The decor is a peaceful light grey and white with simple artwork of light seascapes that almost suggests you are on a beach vacation. Our server was Kayla, who took fabulous, unrushed care of us, and was able to easily tell us the many yummy specials in detail, reaffirming how delicious the regular plates are as well, bringing us delicious bread and butter. I enjoyed the fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes and basil, but did not realize it would be in olive oil with olives; they kindly brought me balsamic reduction as I love a good caprese. My husband enjoyed his sirloin special as I enjoyed the roasted chicken (half chicken) on cranberry relish with apple compote. Our friends raved about her salmon and his peppered tuna. Side dishes were fairly standard, roasted potatoes and a half butternut squash, roasted with melted butter and brown sugar in center, which is apparently their signature. For dessert we shared profiteroles, a trio of pastry filled with ice cream and drizzled with chocolate, a nice finish. By the time we left on a Wednesday night at 745pm there was a wait. There is valet parking, but when we arrived there were still free spaces farther down the lot. Although the menu is a bit pricey, it is quite a lovely restaurant for a special occasion, with great service.

If you want a nice dinner with friends or a special someone then this place is it. We have gone here so many times we usually get the same thing every time. Yes, it is that good. A bib salad to start which my wife and I split. A soft-shell crab entree with a butternut squash on the side which can only be had in the summer. In the winter, we usually get a whole sea bass fried from tail to head. This place is not cheap but the quality of the food is definitely worth the price.

Great night date night whatever night, this is the best place and the best meal and the best ambience ever. Just a little pricey but you pay for what you get so nice and relaxing with the music going the damn lights and the beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Where do I even begin! The dining room has such a quaint romantic feel to it. The staff is eager and incredibly friendly. Being out of towners, our waitress recommend a few other places to try (none of which will compare to the quality of food here.) As a self proclaimed foodie, this place has hands down the absolute best calamari I have ever had. EVER. The chef pairs some incredibly unique flavors in each of the dishes we tried and you can tell he puts his passion into each plate. Being from NJ/NY area I have spent 3x as much on food that pales in comparison to Coastal Grill. And you have to try the baked goat cheese! I love the gorgeous new interior and location. Our first experience visiting the new location across the street from the old, into the old hardware store (our fault - I think they moved over four years ago) now it's a contemporary, very much modern vibe kind of place, but still quite comfortable and welcoming. The service staff and menu are still tops; our server Laura is one of the Old Guard who made the trip across the street from the old location, and is still among the most pleasant and professional servers you'll find anywhere in Va Beach. Food offerings remain superb and still concentrate on seafood prepared in sometimes different ways, and are always delicious. The long-time acorn squash and roasted potatoes accompaniments are still served, and nicely compliment most any of the entrees. In a beach town like Va Beach, it is surprisingly difficult to find a really good seafood restaurant. Coastal Grill has always been on the shortlist here, and continues to shine in their "new" location. I promise it won't be another four years until our next visit.

We went to Coastal Grill on a Monday evening for our 30th anniversary. Although we didn’t make reservations, they are recommended. We arrived around 5:30 and it was almost empty except for the bar area. By 6pm, the dining room was almost full. The restaurant is very pretty inside and out. It is nice to see real linens on the tables and cloth napkins. There is a very peaceful ambiance in the restaurant that is disrupted by the hostess and servers who hang out by the entrance/bar area and chat. The hostess is very animated and we couldn’t help but look her way whenever she flailed her arms (which was frequently) like something had happened. Seemed a bit immature. We found our server friendly yet inattentive. It is very impressive that the servers learn all of the specials each day and can recite and explain them. Our server said a cornsquash, instead of acorn squash so we expected a casserole of corn and squash! When we were served a half of “acorn” squash, we chuckled. A loaf of warm bread came out at some point early on but when it was gone we were never offered more bread. We started with raw oysters and oysters Rockefeller. Both were very tasty but lacked the brine of fresh shucked oysters so I wondered if they were purchased pasteurized and then served on the half shell. My husband had scallops and I ordered the grouper with eggplant purée. Both of our entrees were served with a half of an acorn squash and roasted red potatoes. My husband and I agreed that the scallops were the best we have ever tasted anywhere! They were pan seared perfectly. Dry and a bit crispy on the outside but moist, succulent and tender inside. The acorn squash was cooked to perfection as well and looked beautiful on our plates. It was a perfect side for the scallops and the grouper. Normally, we would say roasted potatoes are a fine side as well but beside the squash, the potatoes were just an extra starch and seemed out of place. We didn’t eat them. It would have been nice to have a non starchy vegetable, something green. There was one cherry tomato on each plate, a garnish maybe? My grouper wasn’t nearly as impressive as the scallops. It had rolled up while cooking, most likely because the skin was not prepped accurately. There was a bite size piece and a fist size piece on my plate. The eggplant sauce that it was served atop was a bit sweet but there was so little on the plate, I couldn’t tell you whether I liked it or not. The small bite of grouper was very tasty and succulent but the larger piece was tough and I wasn’t sure it was completely cooked so I took it home and cooked it a bit more the next day for lunch and it was very good. Overall, we both desired something with acid to counter balance the rich and creamy sweet flavors on our plates. They did serve a small garnish of delicious pickled onions with the Rockefeller oysters and my grouper which my husband and I gobbled up! It wasn’t enough though and the meal really, really needed a salad with vinaigrette or a green vegetable with an acidic dressing. With finer restaurants, we do have higher expectations for well balanced plates. We both drank water only, our bill was just under $100.00 and we tipped $20 bucks. So, we definitely only spend that much on dinner for two on our anniversaries. I know some reviews have said the food is overpriced but that is almost the exact amount we spent at an Oceanfront restaurant for our previous anniversary. (Although we had wine and dessert that year which added about $35 more to the bill) So I think the prices are very fair and similar to fine dining and fresh seafood elsewhere in the area.

Why can't they get their wine temperatures right? When I ordered a glass of Chardonnay, it was served WAY too cold, about 35 degrees. And when I had a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, it was served at room temperature, way too WARM! We've been fans of Coastal for decades. It's a regional treasure. The new restaraunt is awesome. The bar area is much more spacious, fun, and makes spontaneous drop-by's a real option now. The menu has always been seasonal, never really changes, but it doesn't need to. They rock everything they make. Oysters are awesome! Not cheap, tho, so be ready to drop some legit coin. Oh, if you like fresh water rainbow trout, they are the only place I've found (outside of the mountains) that prepares it right. Head on, whole fish, very lightly breaded, pan seared. AMAZING!!!!!

I don't know who this clowin is that wrote this review about "butter soaked," "dirty vents," etc. but he or she is all wet. I am a local and have been frequenting this restaurant for 20 years and the consistency of the food, cleanliness, service, and attention to detail is outstanding. there is ABSOLUTELY NO evidence to support this "butter-soaked" claim and the decor and cleanliness are beyond dispute. Their chef is well recognized, the ownership is long-term and stable, and so is the loyal staff. This is clearly one of the best restaurants in Virginia Beach and toursts and residents alike should have no fear of not having a superb dining experience. I consider this review an insult to those of us who have delightedly frequented the Coastal Grill for years and years and the derogatory reference to "my parents" is a slap in the face to me and all of the other long term patrons who have yes, now grown children but who have consistently returned here based on the service and quality. Ignore this review..............try it and you will find that what I say is true.

Coastal Grill was an absolute must to go to. The atmosphere was quiet and romantic. The service was excellent, and you feel that you are a part of their family. The food was fantastic, and the dishes looked professional. Overall, it is a great place to go to, and i highly recommend going to it.

The best of the (locals) beach! This is THE place for locals who know where the best restaurant is (and out-of-towners in the know). The menu changes with what is available seasonally and is truly a fine dining experience without the fine dining snobbery. The staff is wonderful and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a special dining experience. It's certainly not the least expensive restaurant in town, but it is the best. They've recently expanded to open an enormous back room. With this addition, the restaurant now has two distinct vibes: The front area where the bar is located is buzzing with activity and the back room is ideal for a quieter, more intimate experience. You can't go wrong with either choice, but I think it helps to know this when making a reservation, which is a must. If you're planning a trip to the area, I'd recommend making a reservation at the same time you book your stay. It is fabulous and sometimes it takes a week or more to get a reservation. That said, it is worth it!
