Having spent time as a youth in the deep south on the poor side of the tracks, I know soul food. Mama's has it in spades. Small and unassuming Mama's does a booming takeout business. Call ahead and get your meal to go. Fantastic fried chicken, roasted turkey, collard greens, lima beans, corn on the cob, gizzards and rice with gravy. You order and pay before you sit if dining in. All the food is served in a take-out containers. I just keep going back when nostalgic and want a happy tummy.

This place is awesome!! THE FOOD IS SO GOOD! The jerk chicken was moist and the rice was tender and fluffy. The candy yams were good. My husband had the tilapia and shrimp basket and said his was just as great! We sat in silence because it was so good. I will definitely recommend to everyone!

Came from out of town and googled soul food spots. This place came up and I told my wife, the pictures look good let’s try it. Listen!!!!! The food is amazing! Absolutely no complaints. Everyone was friendly and it felt like I was at grandmas house after Sunday morning service.

My first time going to Mama’s Soul Food. I got the chicken livers and a side of collard greens. Greens were good Livers were horrible! No Flavor and Burnt. Very disappointed was craving them.

Food is pretty good and reasonable priced. I usually get the vegetarian plate which comes with 4 sides, rice & gravy and cornbread. I can get two meals from my purchase. Parking is easy and I believe it is wheelchair accessible and kids are welcome. My place to go when I don't feel like cooking for a home cooked meal.

I have not been able to find fried chicken livers anywhere until here. I was thrilled and they were delicious! Just like my Grandma used to make. Fast delivery and hot, fresh food. So happy to have found my favorite comfort food and can’t wait to get more! Great menu!

Dropped by this restaurant in 2020 but only picked up a slice of cake. Finally came back tonight and it hit the spot! Don't be fooled by it's exterior, this place is worth the visit especially if you are looking for some southern food. Meals are affordable and come with plenty of food. You can dine in and be sure to check out their specials. Give this black owned small business a chance!

I ordered food for a family member so I can't review the taste but the service was below average. A new host was training and her trainer was loud and rude towards her and cold towards customers. I looked at the food before ordering and it seemed ok but nothing spectacular. There was a steady flow of customers ordering to-go. There are areas for dine in seating. I waited too long for two baked chicken dinners to-go. The most disappointing part was the loud rude worker!

Clean spot and really nice people. Food was, well, pretty good actually. Portion size was good also. Buuuut... Man, so, I got the quarter chicken dark with 2 sides and corn bread. The jerk chicken was flavorful and a little spicy. Average size thigh and drumstick. Corn bread was good. Tender and a little sweet. Mac and cheese was pretty good and tasted home made. Green beans were... well, green beans with seasoning. The rice was... points off for the rice. Flavor was good but something really feels like its a boil in the bag or par cooked quick rice. The texture and look of it. Can't complain too much though. Gladly ate just about all of it. 3 stars??? Well.... a thigh, drumstick, mac and cheese, green beans, rice and some corn bread was over FIFTEEN bucks. I get it, wow, prices have gone up and all... but, ouch. If this place remindes you of Grandma's cooking - Good on them. Enjoy it. But if you didn't go there years ago to appreciate the flavorful memories its just not quite worth it.

They shorted me the 2 sides for the meals and no coctail sauce for the shrimp all because I ordered late.. Im not from Florida and didnt know where the place was! It was quite a drive. WONT ORDER FROM THEM EVER AGAIN! Its said to say but I was the wrong color! FACT!

The food was soooo good as always. I had the smothered chicken with mac and candied yams, and my fiance' had the chicken livers basket with fries. We also ordered the corn fritters, if you never had them you should try them. If you love corn you will be addicted. This is our spot for a reason. Food is OFF THE CHAIN!

Let me tell you this food was good. Me and my husband were visiting Tampa and wanted to try something different. And I found this spot, and we tried about six different items. We left stuffed. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I like my meats to be more seasoned other than that our experience was great. Oh and the lemonade was Phenomenal

The staff was very nice, HOWEVER who orders a Turkey wing dinner and only gets the tip and a flat 😡 they told me that is a full wing in Tampa. The cabbage and corn fritters were good. My cousin had pork chops, mac n cheese and greens. She said the chops were perfect the greens to salty and the mac n cheese taste like it's out the box. The sweet tea was yummy and they have a parking lot.

Always try to hit locally owned food spots whenever I go out of town & Mama's popped up on the map. The oxtails were great! Wasn't much of a fan of the greens, but the mac & cheese was good. Cornbread portion was way too small, it was like a sample piece. Was missing the wings from my order (hence the -1 star). The banana pudding was really good reminded me of being back home. Would definitely visit again next time I'm in town.

Food is good. The collard greens have the pepper spice in it. I know some southerners prefer a smoky meat taste, this place isn't that place. However the greens were good. The Mac and Cheese was excellent! The smothered pork chops were alright. The chops option came with 2 pieces and could use more flavor but the the gravy and rice were very good. The candied yams were good, just don't be deceived because they weren't brown with the sweet sugar, but the flavor was definitely there. There is inside dining and all food is provided in to go boxes.

The banana pudding is good, but besides that what I had wasn't really tasty. I don't really get that southern or "authentic" soul food taste from the food. It taste as if it comes from boxes or was just frozen and heated up. The yams didn't have flavor, the mac and cheese wasn't that tasty. The cabbage was decent, that was the only thing that had flavor and the rice and gravy was just basic. The portions are a nice size and the price is good but it's just lacking that real soul food taste that I was looking for.

The service was great. The atmosphere was calm. And the food was ok. I guess I was looking for stong southern flavors and was disappointed when I didn't get what I was craving. The candied yam were calling my name and did not disappoint. In closing, I will drop in again if I am in the area.

Where do I start? Aside from the Florida terms, vs Detroit terms for food ( stewed chicken- smothered chicken), I defy you to go find me a smothered chicken dinner, with collards, and mac n cheese that tastes this good! Some red velvet cake may have been involved, so step up ... 0 complaints anywhere! The waitress, Andrea was funny and knowledgable, and made strong recommendations. My only complaint, is that, I missed the chance to get peach cobbler.

We decided to visit a "local" restaurant that had some flavor and SOUL! This place was truly a "home grown," down to earth, hidden gem. They were playing gospel music that immediately made me feel a spiritual connection. The decor was very laid back and simple, yet it was still elegant and tasteful. The atmosphere was very warming and inviting. It reminded me of sitting in my grandmother's kitchen! The staff was very friendly and helpful. They suggested things to do and places to go while visiting their city! The staff was attentive to our needs and went above and beyond in their efforts to see that we were happy. Aaaand that was just the atmosphere! Now the food..... maaaaan listen here!! You will NOT be let down! The seasoning was just right and it reminded me of MY momma's cooking. The portions were very large and the prices were more than reasonable. They had almost everything imaginable as far as "soulfood" is concerned! From smothered pork chops to smoked turkey wings, the possibilities and combinations are only limited by your appetite. The cornbread was moist and delicious... and the banana pudding was simply divine! The point is this.... Mama's Southern Restaurant in Tampa is a MUST visit on your agenda. It TRULY blessed my soul! Great Food! Greater Service!! Thank you Mariah! For your food suggestions, everything was great. We had the Grill Tilapia and Baked Chicken. Portions were plentiful and flavorful. We definitely will return and recommend this restaurant. The homemade Key Lime Cake was awesome!

Wow..while vacationing in Tampa we had an urge for some good ole pork chops..locals recommended this place and what a treasure it is! They had delicious ox tail too... portion size, price, side selections and entree selection are all spot on! Staff is friendly, professional and very quick to get your meal just right. Clean and comfortable environment..parking could be a little challenge.. a definite must go!

I was riding along 60 looking for something good to eat , so I by passed Mama soul food and had to do a U turn. And you know what ?! I'm glad I did . I was amazed at the variety of the Menu . So much good stuff it was hard to choose . So I picked the Turkey Wing dinner with Lima beans and Candied yams . Everything, down to the sweet tea was absolutely delicious. And with me ordering a to go , I had plenty for the next day . The Price was right and the food was amazing. I definitely will be making the ride from Zephyrhills very soon .

The food is good! I must admit that this is the only place where me as a person from South Carolina can get "Soul food" in Florida. The portions are small my wife and I got 2 wing dinners and this small piece of cornbread... Had oxtails, rice & gravy + mac n cheese + yams Compared to the many other soul food restaurants I have visited across the country, it was very mediocre. The service was fair at best. Although unsweetend tea is on tbe menu, they didnt have it and i doubt they ever do... because they didnt offer to make up a fresh pot. The reason I came to THIS restaurant because it has almost all good reviews AND it has a website... unlike all but 1 of the other 10 soul food establishments in town. What a shame. We are almost in 2018 and most of the black soul food businesses in Tampa Florida have NO WEB PRESENCE... WOW...

Craving soul food? This is the place to come its centrally located right off MLK and the food is fabulous. The exterior doesnt look like much but once you walk inside its a nice little restaurant. We had the catfish basket with fries and the fried chicken platter with rice and gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn bread (holy carb overload) The food explodes in your mouth with each flavorful bite. The catfish was so delicious and tasty I think its my favorite spot for it now. The chicken platter didnt last long and was devoured immediately. I reccomend this place if you want a delicious meal like mama used to make.

Beyond belief GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got cube steak, mash taters, yams, banana pudding, chicken livers, fried green tomatoes, corn bread, catfish and shrimp--UNREAL GOOD and I am a good home cook on my own--but my gosh--we will be stopping by again and again!!!! This place was clean. The hostess was polite and pleasant. I ordered the smother chicken & chicken basket. However, I think the hostess didn't hear me say no thank you on the chicken tenders. So we ended up with an extra plate. The gravy was not as southern as I would have liked as it didn't really have a lot of flavor. The yams weren't as sweet and not cooked down. The Mac & cheese was very delicious. I didn't eat the cornbread but it looked the part. Sweet tea was just ok. The tenders and chicken wings were fresh & hot, along with the fries. However, there was no salt. Which wasn't really a big deal. I must say all the staff were clean, upbeat & uniform. The wait was not long. I will go again and get chicken wings & fries.

I just had food from here for the first time. I'm in love. I got the oxtails with rice and black eye peas and gizzards. Not the biggest fan of the peas just because I like smoked meat flavor in them but they were still good. Oxtails were delicious! And the gizzards. You cant find many places who do them right so they are soft but a nice fried coating on them. These are the best I've had in Tampa. Dont sleep on this place. GO!!!! Just do eat too much for lunch of you're working because I am ready for bed after that great meal.

A taste of home. I'm originally from Louisiana and soul food is life giving! They hit the mark. Haven't made it home yet to eat our dessert but I'm sure it will be great! We were so full from our portions that we took our cake to go. Welcoming and clean environment. Friendly and attentive staff. Many options on Sunday afternoon. Well adapted to Covid precautions. I got the bbq pulled pork sandwich entree with hush puppies and the baked Mac n cheese... it was delicious! My girlfriend got the fried shrimp entree with hush puppies and potato salad. This was for the Brandon location.. I always get take out...1st few times I went the food was great. The last few times not good but since they're closer than the Tampa location I tried a few more times.. Had a slab of ribs on superbowl weekend and they were soaked in sauce and had no taste. Next the whiting was tooooo crunchy, chicken wings had no seasoning. Tried the fried shrimp and catfish the other day and the shrimp just were not good. I doubt I'll be back. Update, I have tried it again and it was much better.

I decided to Google "soul food" and this wonderful restaurant came up! This is very busy takeout and to go restaurant. I decided to eat in and glad I did. I ordered the fried smothered pork and and got a veggie plate. It was mac and cheese, potato salad, baked beans and yams. I ordered the mashed potatoes and corn on the cob for the pork chops. All was good. I recommend as it seems it's mostly local folks eating here so you know it will be good. Just be patient though as on a Sunday it was steady. Prices and quality are really good.

Had a long day at work outside and didn't eat all day. I didn't feel like cooking after work so I was looking for a meal on the way home but I don't eat fast food. I drove pass mamas soul food a few times before but never stopped in.im glad I did today. I ordered the oxtail meal with collard greens and yams. The food took about 15 minutes but was worth every minute. For it being late in the afternoon,the food tasted very fresh. The collard greens had so much flavor ,it was amazing. I am very particular about collard greens and these were on my top 5 list.the candy yams were very good and soft how I like them.the oxtail just fell off the bone and the Gravy was also very good. I'd definitely make this my go to for when I don't cook. They have a good menu selection also

We went to the Brandon location after hearing a friend brag about their authentic southern soul food style of cooking. We actually were guarded about our expectations because we have been to a lot of soul food restaurants in our travels back and forth from Miami to New Orleans. Honestly, there are not many authentic soul food restaurants left. Most are just heavy on the fried chicken and French fries. This place reaches back in time when it was quite common to find aunts, grandmas and momas in the kitchen throwing down for any and anyone who showed up. The selection is great, the food we chose was great, the prices were great, the service was great! Highly recommend!

Went to this place for thanksgiving. First time coming here . I order a day before pickup and Someone had already pickup my food and pretended it was me. I explained to the girl that I had recently moved here from NY . I know no one out here . She was extremely helpful and give me another set of meals. I’m so sorry this happy to u guys. Just moved here from Illinois. I did a google search of “soul food near me”. This place popped up and naturally I read all the reviews. Reviews were mixed but I made the 30 minute drive to Tampa to try it out anyway. They did not disappoint!!! I ordered in the restaurant and it only took about 10-15 minutes to get my food. I got the jerk chicken dinner with greens and mac & cheese. Let me tell you, this meal was EVERYTHING!! Chicken was so juicy and fell off the bone. Greens and mac & cheese were cooked to perfection! I will most definitely be going back!!

I was excited to try out a local soul food restaurant, but I was a little underwhelmed with the experience. I am from Texas and my broader family is from Louisiana, and we know good food. Walked in to a dimly lit dining room, looks like they didn't have all the lights on for breakfast. They had one server/waitress on duty managing the counter and waiting tables. Thus, service was a little slow and scatter brained. The food came out hot and looked good. Taste was OK. Grits are usually served slightly thick, but creamy where I'm from. But these grits were runny and super creamy. Didn't appeal to me. But what I did appreciate was that I had Wings, Grits and 2 pancakes for less than $8. I had the ox tail and it wasn't great in my honest opinion, it was fair. Not good and not bad. It was a more of saltish taste overall, but not overwhelmingly salty, it came with white rice, when usually I get brown rice and bean or even steamed cabbage. For the sides I had mac n cheese and that was average again. The other side was the hush puppies and THIS they got it down PERFECT! A very light hint of sweetness and not oily just amazing! They also included a corn bread with the meal, its was good not great though. The corn bread was dry (not in a bad way), I've had some that were moist before. It was just super brittle, but good. The value for the food was great, but the quality of the food good overall, but not great. Inside was really clean and staff was polite and order was out in about 5 minutes. Inside as I waited, I could tell the AC wasn't working good. It was just barely noticeably cool. I also just bit into the banana and this is actually a bit aggressive on the sweet side. Pretty sweet..... where it makes my face spasm like if you sucked on a lemon for a moment. Overall, it was good just not great. I'm a very honest critic because I like to try and enjoy new places and share that with others. Yet we all have different taste. I'm sure a good majority would tell you what I say is true. I've been here to west coast, and overseas in Korea trying anything. Lots of people find my reviews helpful especially in Korea lol. I think this place can improve, but it's not my business. Hope you all enjoy your plate if you do decide to eat here.

My husband and I are on vacation and for New Year's day we wanted to continue the southern tradition of the food your "supposed" to eat and let me tell you, this place has such delicious flavor to your everyday sides. My husband got the smothered pork and he was in heaven, he ate every bite. HIGHLY recommend eating here, I would every week if I could. Decent food, nervous waitress. I like my food with a tad more seasoning but it was okay home style food because I’m not a fan of chain restaurants while traveling. The catfish was much better than the chicken, the collards was the best thing on my plate. Gravy was definitely packaged gravy. My son got tenders and Mac n cheese. About time Tampa got a real soul food spot! First time there and took my friend for his birthday. Heard about this place when from a coworker so we decided to check it out. Doesn’t look like much from the outside and the parking lot was virtually nonexistent. But inside was nice and staff was friendly. We both ordered the special of chicken and ribs. Came with rice and 2 sides. I got the Mac and cheese and collard greens and candies yams. The rice had gravy on it and was so good! There wasn’t much of a wait but our plates came out and were huge! That’s my kind of place. More bang for your buck. The meat was tender and the bbq sauce was smokey. Also got some banana pudding to go which had real bananas in it. I definitely want to go back! Very happy with this place. Worth a check out.

It was our first time there. I brought my husband for his birthday. We ate like royalty. I had the barbeque ribs, he had smothered pork chops. (macaroni and cheese, corn nuggets,s greens, candied yams, rice and gravy and cornbread) Truly tasting delicious and homemade. Quick service too. Great experience. My husband and I visited the restaurant for breakfast. I ordered the corned beef hash breakfast. I am pleased to say my corned beef hash was perfectly cooked. It was well done and had a nice crisp on top. My eggs were also perfectly cooked and my grits were well seasoned and completely cooked. Portions were generous, I had to get a to go box. No complaints from my husband, and that's a good sign. We will definitely return.

Appereance of food-b Food looks good, my only real problem is the cheese I paid extra for on my grits.....they, understandable, but a paper seperater on top of the grits and eggs so that the toast won't get soggy, but because of that the steam from the grits caused the cheese ontop to melt and some got stuck to the paper....so it kind of defeats the purpose of paying extra for cheese grits and I dont get all of my cheese. Taste and qaulity: c So....the grits were good, good butter flavor..but not as creamy and smooth in texture....a little waterish taste, the eggs were scrabbled fine, the toast was the best part of the meal...buttery and toasted right The hashbrowns were undercooked...had a raw taste and not as soft as they should be. The porkchops(one fried and one grilled) were both good on flavor but horrible of juicy and tenderness.....way over cooked and dry. Price: c For about 11.50 the price wasn't bad.....but the taste of the food as a whole makes you wonder why did I spend money on this. Overall-C+ They got flavor, they got portions.....but the qaulity and cooking of the product has to be better. I would try them again...maybe lunch or dinner for some redemption.

And that Banana Pudding really set off everything. If you're ordering to go it can get a little crowded, but I sat in and had no problems. Would definitely recommend!

The wife and I had a craving for fried chicken so we did a search for best fried chicken in Tampa and found this place. While the chicken was not the best we ever had (it was still really good) everything else was spectacular. Enough superlatives have not been created to explain the food here, you cannot lose. Make sure you get the homemade pepper juice for your greens. You must try the banana pudding.

The morning waitresses they have aren't really morning people but you get what you pay for, am I right? If you haven't tried it, I'd recommend you stop in and give it a try. Real soul food like I'm used to when I want 'comfort food's'. Being in Central and South Florida, a lot of time comfort food down here is Spanish. Beef picadilla and sweet plantains, minda Noche sandwiches, etc. I'm from Jacksonville and when I think comfort food I think soul food like oxtails and turkey wings and cornbread and greens and this place has got it all. Gravy is on point, oxtails fall right off the bone like they should. Nothing over seasoned or oversalted, everything served hot. I had no problem getting a decent take out order together And the prices are decent. I've been cooking everything since the pandemic started but on occasion I've been getting out and checking out a new restaurant for it to go order and I was not disappointed. The flavor on the food is a hit or miss. We had hog mogs and pig's feet. Both came with rice and two sides. We also ordered fried green tomatoes which is an appetizer that came after the entre. The hog mogs and pig's feet had good flavor. The rice was flavorless, and the fried green tomatoes were pure salt bombs. The candy yams tasted like they came out of a can, the greens had good flavor, the corn on the cob had good flavor, and the black eyed peas had good flavor. All in all not the worst of experiences, but definitely not what my mom used to make.

I had read other reviews about mama's soul food kitchen and had added it to my must try list. I finally got around to going there this past Monday for lunch and glad I did. The restaurant itself is attached to a laudry mat but once you walk in your invited to scrumptious smells in a nice size space. I ordered the chicken wing dinner with mac-n-cheese, rice and mashed potatos/gravy and my fiance ordered the oxtails with greens and corn. WOW! Mama put her foot in it. The food was great, the chicken was hot, crispy, yet still moist inside. The mac-n-cheese was so good I ate it first (this may be some of the best mac n cheese I've had in the bay area). The greens and potatos and gravy were also amazing...I really can't say enough good things about their sides. I brought my 1 chicken wing and side left overs home and they were devoured before dinner. The prices were also very reasonable. True soul food is hard to come by in Tampa and mamas kitchen has done it. This will be my new soul food craving spot.

We went there today and it's Definitely authenitic soul food. The restaurant was clean and the food was awesome. It's not in the ideal location but it's a treasure worth finding. We ordered the (2) appetizers, the corn fritters which were very crispy and sweet and juicy inside. Almost like fried ball of cream of corn. Another guest ordered the fried gizzards which were nicely fried. I ordered the smothered pork chops with the Mac and cheese and greens. I think they gave me two pork chops, seasoned and juicy, and gravy was just right. My bf and his brother in law both ordered the chicken and rib dinner. They brought out two plates, one plate full of spare ribs and chicken and the other plate were the sides. He said the ribs were semi tender not falling off the bone but juicy, nicely seasoned and BBQ sauce was good. The chicken he thinks was smoked yet tasted very good. The mac and cheese nicely seasoned and so was the greens. The cornbread was a little sweet just the way I like it. My bf sister ordered the fried catfish dinner. She said it was very crispy and said it was good. My bf youngest sister ordered the fried chicken and said it was nicely seaoned and crispy. My bf mother and brother in law ordered the meatloaf and both said it was tender and juicy. My bf father ordered the cube steak and also said it was tender and flavorful. My bf middle sister and his brother in law ordered the oxtail and said it was awesome. They had a constant stream of customers ordering take out we noticed. Overall, I highly recommend the restaurant.

This place is has good food, the service is alittle strange they brought out my moms food first and brought mines out 10 minutes later. The manager did make it up to me. Mac and cheese not too good but surprisingly enough the yams are tasty! Most restaurants have unsweetened yams! Like the personal signatures on the walls, nice touch. Saw the fresh desserts in an open glass fridge but I really should stay away from but tempting. The sides seemed a little pricey, $3.00 or somethinh each. Thought it could be a lower for sides. My meal was about $10-12. I defintely would return.

Now Mama's southern Soul Food was the bomb we had a great time there. We actually roll from Orlando down to Tampa just to eat there as we were visiting my brother who flew in from Atlanta on business.the restaurant actually came as a recommendation from the housekeeper at the hotel when my brother was staying. She hit that right on the point. My wife had chitlins, I had smothered pork chops my brother had baked smothered chicken with all of the Soul Food sides you can think of. I had started eating there at or least 3 to 4 times a week but I noticed the food had started to be rushed not fully done as usuall. Had to return food on several occasions. The cook is not friendly. Otherwise I'm always sending someone there to eat. The waitress are very professional. The customer service is a 10 .

Waitress had a bit of a misunderstanding placing the order which had my wait to be a little while longer , but it came out PREFECT so I had no complaints . And I have to say, to the person complaining about the salt....this is soul food. Idk what you think is soul food, but that's not soul food. Soul food uses salt. If you "can't handle salt", then soul food is not for you. I recommend you stick to a flavorless north eastern diet.

The service was Excellent, your staff was the GREATEST, and the food was sooo good I came back Sunday for a repeat, and once again you nailed it! The chicken wings are not greecy, salty, or over spiced, No Pork in the Veggies ++ and the oxtails ARE TO DIE FOR! I called the only two people I know in Tampa to let them know about Mama's Southern Soul Food. Thank you, my experience was twice the pleasure, and I will recommend it to every one that lives or visits Tampa. P.s. Cali..... they already know.

Too much salt in Mac&cheese collard greens. Pig feet and chitterlings no seasoning. Chitterlings need to be cooked with pototoe, lil vingar or lemon juice in it to remove strong smell of chitterlings. Then dice onions in chitterlings in them and then fry or bake a little. Now that's how grandma cooked them. Yes they were very clean but nothing else.

I been coming here since it opened summer of '16 before it was on Google maps. Totally Love it. It's always packed when the church folks get out of service, one Sunday there was literally a line wrapped halfway outside the building. They ALWAYS sell out of the Red Velvet cake every SINGLE SUNDAY, but that's alright becuase thats how you know it is good. The Food is great. Best soulfood spot in Tampa hands down. The church folks always look snazzy and give this restaurant a feeling of family & community. The service could be better but when you deal with SO MANY people, in a small space, you're bound to be irritable, and that is understandable. Support Black Business, & #BlackLivesMatter!
