Reviews of Big Ray's Fish Camp
Michael Encinosa
Yummy yummy yummy, in my tummy tummy tummy. Came to try out the blackened grouper sandwich here because I saw that they had one number one in the Tampa area for their grouper sandwich. Atmosphere. Was a great outdoor seating. Was so nice! They have a awesome variety of fish sandwiches and some really delicious french fries and onion rings! It was so good. I forgot to take a picture of the food before ate it.

Ended up here with co-workers only after the first choice was closed and I'm really glad we had lunch here. Nice little place with outdoor seating and had grouper for the first time. I had the Grouper Cheek Po Boy and it was great, tender, fresh fish and the sauce just right. The side of onion rings were nice and crispy, hope to visit Tampa again and revisit Big Ray's Fish Camp for more grouper.

We saw the viral videos on this place & said we'd visit when we visit Tampa in Sept. Well it happened. The videos do NOT give this place justice. The food is so freaking good. The lobster corndog & shrimp burger are award worthy. WHO CAME UP WITH THAT??? The smoked fish dip was yummy too. We will definitely be back. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Absolutely loved the service we received when we visited Big Ray's Fish Camp over the summer! The young man and woman that took and delivered our order were just lovely. Outdoor seating was nice and would have been even better had we not had some aggressive flying companions during our visit. Citronella candles were provided though they did not offer much aid. My Partner loved the grouper sandwich and I enjoyed the fried shrimp. Some of the shrimp in the blackened shrimp with yuca were burnt and the yuca was bland. The fries were okay. This is a great little establishment that you should visit and judge for yourself.

Delicious, Yummy, Mouth-Watering; all describe the food at Big Rays Fish Camp.
Blackened grouper was excellent.
Blackened ship very tasty.
Fresh Local Fish Dip-divine, and my favorite of all items I tried today.
Pricing-unreal how inexpensive they are. Couldn’t believe a delicious large blackened grouper was only $20!
The young lady at the register is very pleasant and friendly!
Rob DeAugustine
Great service, friendly staff, and great in state beer selection.
My only set back was the $6 can of 12oz wheat beer. While all was good, can't imagine paying that price tag again. The blackened grouper sandwich and fries for $20 is another price I feel is a bit out of touch. Menu was "outdated" showing a price tag of $15 for the sandwich. I understand a dollar or two considering what the pandemic has done. So I imagine they are just trying to recoup loses on the logistics? Nevertheless, in my included picture you see a high $26 meal.
I can get a lot of food with that anywhere that isn't a Michelin star restaurant. I guess you pay for the experience of eating at a top 50 places to eat in the Tampa Bay area in 2018 as advertised?
I'm not sure. I would go back, but not consistently as the prices are a bit over the top for the food.
Marcus Robinson
The speed of the food and the service is like WHOA! My fiance and I visited this place Easter Sunday and the food was damn near Michelin Star! We will definitely keep this as our weekend spot! Ok so I edited this because service staff as of May 15 sucked whatever staff you had Easter Sunday bring them back full time.
Alan Hsieh
Very fast service at 2pm on a Friday. Plenty of space to sit indoors or outdoors. Had the famous lobster corndog and blackened grouper sandwich. The sandwich was out of this world! The lobster had big chunks lobster in it. I'd come back to try the other seafood sandwich items. Highly recommend this place!

Busy weekday lunch hour visit - the line went quickly, and food was dropped at our outside table in a very reasonable matter of time. My Grouper Reuben (pic related) was amazing; my compatriot reported that his Cuban sandwich was "straight money". Don't expect fancy trappings, this place is rough around the edges - as long as your criteria are amazing fresh food and great service, you'll get along just fine here. Here's hoping they open a Pinellas location....

Great place! I love a local haunt... The blackened grouper sandwich was excellent, the fries had that wonderful crispy outside and creamy inside, the fried shrimp was perfectly cooked, meaning not fried until they're hard. The coleslaw was vinegar based and delicious. I'd definitely go again and get the grouper cheeks, oyster po' boy or the lobster corn dog. Take a minute to check out all the little menus written on the wall before you order. There's a lot there, and you don't want to miss it.
Jamison Mhoore
Incredible blackened grouper and po boy sandwich. Quick and very friendly service. Everything that I saw in the kitchen was freshly hand breaded. Free on site parking. Place is off the chain, non nonsense, tasty food.
mc smarto
We went for the lobster corn dog but they didn't have it so we tried the shrimp corn dog. Delish! We also had the grouper reuben (omg, so good) and the oyster po' boy with fries and onion rings. We will definitely be back.

One of my friends suggested Big Ray's to me. Guess what? We're still friends, he didn't let me down. Their grouper sandwich is prepared in a way that is unique. The sandwich is not just a big slab of grouper in a bun. They put some thought into their sandwich and the result is tasty and delicious. The server was really friendly as well.
Dustin Mollenkopf
Great little place. It was a bit pricey for a Grouper sandwich, BUT in line with what you would pay at a sit down restaurant. However, the portion size was very generous and thick cut. The blackened Grouper sandwich was cooked perfectly. The fries were pretty good as well.
Plenty of outside seating, but lots of flies, but they have candles you can light.
Lisa B
Delicious! Lightly battered seafood, perfectly seasoned. Buffalo shrimp were amazing! Small order area with 2-3 small tables, large covered outdoor eating area with a beach / fishing type scenery. Really neat. I will definitely go back.
Kinzy B.
Fried Grouper sandwich was Sooooo good. I also got the deviled crab which I didn’t like too much. But the sandwich and fries were delicious and fulfilling. It literally took them 5-10mins to get everything together. But they have an out door patio and a small sitting area inside.
Christian Jones
Fantastic little fish restaurant convenient to everything south Tampa. Plenty of options on the menu but they don’t overload you either. Just a couple indoor seats but they have a dozen or so tables outside. The grouper sandwich was spectacular and the shrimp po boy looked good, too. Solid choice for a lazy weekend afternoon.
Raymond Berger
The pulled pork sandwich in the oyster po' boy where both fine. They were a little dry for my taste but overall I had good flavor. I personally wouldn't get the same thing again but I might come back and try something else.
J Hsu
Quaint little shack off a road in a quiet part of town. Service was friendly and fast as I asked which was better: the grouper sandwich or the grouper reuben. As usual, I'll take the recommendation for homemade onion rings too. Went with the grouper reuben and it was a nice sandwich. I haven't eaten grouper in a long time so yes, it's a nice heartier flesh that makes for a "meaty" sandwich. Delicious! The onion rings were tasty as well with a delicate coating. Only complaint is when I took a bite, they were cold. I figured potentially they already made a batch and maybe they just didn't re fry them long enough because to that point, they had no color (picture with sandwich) and the food came out nearly as fast as I sat down outside. That is a bit odd as a fresh frying of these ingredients should take longer. Not a problem though as I brought this concern to the waitress and she offered to have a new batch sent out. The next set (picture of just rings noticeably more golden) was definitely more in line with expectations although they did also come up extremely quick. Maybe their fryers are just at hot temps... Kudos on the customer service.

We loved it! Driving through Tampa & found this place on Google! It was so wonderful!! Fried Shrimp Basket with Onion Rings & Tarter Sauce was out of this world amazing! The grouper sandwich was fantastic!! This place is a must stop when in the area! Yummmm!!! The Tarter Sauce here is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I need a bottle for back home in Illinois!
Dottie Nott
Nice little place. It felt like dining in Key West. The food was fresh and prepared to perfection. The staff was friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go back and try something else off their menu.
Roger Olguin
The shrimp po boy here is really good, but what really did it for me was their garlic fries… amazing!! From west coast to east coast best garlic fries I’ve ever had. I love the restaurant too, very small space but luckily they have outside dining. The area is very nice, plenty of parking.
Érico Liu
We ordered Lobster Corndog $27 (side of fries included), a Grilled Grouper Sandwich $20 (side of onion rings included) and a Key Lime Pie ($7) + coke $3.5
The Lobster It does taste fresh for sure! But we thought the batter and the sauce stands out more than the Lobster itself, feels kind of sad to have that fresh flavor hidden. In the other hand, the fries with cheese and garlic was really good!
The sandwich was kind of plain, maybe the blackened would taste better. Onion rings was super crunchy and also good.
And the Key Lime Pie was very good! Lime flavor was very perfumed and super easy to eat, like it melts in your mouth (words of my gf lol). But I am not sure about the price...
Definitely worth the try, but don't come with high expectations.
Angie Anderson
Nice little spot to grab lunch! Pleasantly surprised at the good food. Had the grouper Rueben, it was great! Outdoor seating was a nice thought except for the god awful heat... It all worked out tho, good and fastest lunch ever! :) Highly recommended!
Nesha
The customer service here is really friendly. I appreciate the friendly service. I had the blackened shrimp burger I believe. It was pretty tasty. And with the parmesan fries really good. And then to go I got the fried Oreos.
Heidi Morales-Hake
I was a little skeptical at first, but boy was I wrong! Hands down, one of the best grouper sandwiches I've ever had. Blackened is the way to go and with yucca as a side. I can't speak for anything else on the menu, but the grouper sandwich is a must!
Christina Perez (Christina)
Went there on lunch and so glad I did! Host/server was very nice and helpful with my questions. Place is cute and quaint. My peel n eat shrimp was sooo good (I request x seasoning and x butter on the side personally) and some ranch for their parm fries and boom it was perfection. I’d definitely go back when I’m in the area.
David Thompson
Only one other time in my life have I chosen to eat at the same place 2 nights in a row, and I am here for the second night in a row. The Oyster Po' Boy is the best I've ever had. The blackened grouper sandwich is the best fish sandwich I've ever had. It is a dumpy fish camp, but if you are looking looking for good food, THIS IS THE PLACE!
Timmy Shigley
Lots of hype with TV time and countless YouTube videos can make one slightly skeptible about the real deal.
Well, the hype lived up.
Had the Grouper Cheeks Po-Boy, Smoked Fish Dip, and Onion Rings.
She had a Grouper Sandwich and fries (should be called vampire deterrant fries with all that garlic and parm, wow).
We had our fish blackened. Blackening spice is very mild and doesn't over power the gentle flavor of the Grouper.
Po-Boy...ain't no way anyone is picking that monster up and actually going hand to mouth. Had to knife and fork that one.
Smoked fish dip is excellent, with barely a whisper of the smoke. Again, doesn't over power the fish.
Only critique was that the saltines were a tad stale. I am guessing due to the high humidity in that tiny building.
Onion Rings were crispy and delicious.
friendly staff and quick service.
Nice job!

My sister heard about this place online and said we had to check it out. Quaint little “fish camp” with seating for a few inside but outside had plenty of picnic tables. You order inside and they bring it out to you. We chose the blackened grouper sandwich with coleslaw (pineapple and vinegar based) and a Lobster Corndog. The grouper sandwich was excellent. Little disappointed with the lobster corndog as it was pretty greasy (and pricey $24.00). But the lobster inside was delish. Place was super busy so they obviously have a lot of happy patrons.
Jasmine Ing
Fish dip and Grouper Sandwich are the best! Yucca with blacken shrimp was perfectly cooked and flavorful. (Yucca portion was a bit too much for me, I would go with different dish next time) The patio was the best thing..I love it so much.
Cute place, perfect location and decent food!
Katie S.
Good food and friendly service 👍🏾. The inside of the restaurant is pretty warm and I would have eaten outside but I did not want to be attacked by bugs while eating. Other than that, no complaints.
Da Wisest Guy
Ok, so like, whoa!!! This shack, this hole in the wall, this "don't even look all that special from the outside" kind of place, is such a humble & delicious & down-to-Earth kind of seafood spot.
I mean, the blackened grouper sandwich is super seasoned with an amazing punch. The shrimp po'boy is excessively excellent with the size & the taste. The garlic & parmesan fries were different & enjoyed 100%. And the shrimp corndog is super unique & tasty.
I'm coming back someday, up to Big Ray's, to eat food from the bayou. (Bonus points if you know the song).
Cortez Bronson
The bbq chicken wings are really good, the French fries with the Parmesan were a hit 🔥 the grouper sandwich was good, blackened chicken is on point 💣 the onion rings were crispy and tasty 🙌🏽
And wait for it…. They have, hi-c poppin pink lemonade 🍋 yep that’s right… this rare find soft drink that’s so tasty, this little hole in the wall place is a definite must try 👍🏽
Mitch Pritchard
Deep fried lobster?!? This is unreal. Whoever created this “lobster corn dog” meal needs a James Beard award. Good job

Got the Grouper Sandwich,Shrimp Po Boy with A Order of Fried Grouper Cheeks. Best and Fresh Seafood in the City. Take your order 2 Minutes to Ballast Point. Won't be Disappointed 💯
Jack
We were so excited about this place, but we left disappointed. Everything was well fried, just didn't have any flavor. Tartar sauce helped, but still...
Jonathan Horwath
A nice local spot with fresh and well seasons seafood, we enjoyed our trip on a recent weekend. We shared a grouper Reuben and some peel and eats. The Reuben was great, the grouper juicy and balanced. Only thing missing was rye bread as it was on normal bread. The peel and eats were served hot and also very well seasoned. I think they may have deep fried them and while I prefer steamed, the spice coating made up for it. Both items were delivered promptly and with a smile. Biggest issue we had were the flies in the outdoor seating area. I think it's time to invest in a total make over of the smelly, dirty picnic tables. Maybe that's part of the charm, next time I'll get it to go.

Im going to have to come back here so many times. Lobster corn dogs were a bucket list find for me since the first time i saw graham elliot make one close to a decade ago now. Delicious. They also have shrimp corn dogs??? Ill be back! Oyster po boy? Gotta come back lol. I will point out also that the outside seating area was immaculate, as well as the inside, the part of the kitchen i could see, and the bathroom was cleaner than clean. We showed up right before the place packed and ran out of parking. If youre here and you don't come to this magic place, you did not understand the assignment lol
Debra Swearingen
Good...I had the Fried Grouper Sandwich with Onion Rings. It was a little pricey for lunch...but it was fresh...not frozen.
Savannah Belle
My first time here. Staff was friendly. Service was quick. Food was delicious. I had the fried shrimp and onion rings. Outdoor seating was nice. I will be coming back.
Ray Ramos
Wow. The blackened grouper sandwich and garlic fries are seriously amazing. Service is excellent and the food comes out super fast. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Gave 3 Stars on the benefit of the doubt that we caught them on a bad day but 2 stars is more accurate! This was our 1st visit here after reading all the positive reviews. First the menu stated Grouper sandwich was $15 when in reality we got charged $20. I understand in this crazy world in which we reside prices go up faster than menu & website pricing could be changed. However that doesn't stop the counter person from making us aware of the changes. Second we were told the sandwich came with choice of Fries, Onion Rings or Coleslaw. Once again no mention there was a 1 dollar upcharge for the onion rings! When the sandwiches were served the fries were cold, all the batter fell off the onion rings, the Coleslaw ($3.00 for a small side) was less than remarkable and the Grouper was bland and the breading/batter fell off just looking at it! So 3 bites into the sandwich it was basically an unseasoned grilled grouper. Also as mentioned by other reviews eating outside was a challenge as the flies were relentless!!! Also bird poop on the outside tables and squirrels begging for food didn't seem very sanitary. Even though the staff was friendly and did try to correct the issue with the fries & onion rings. I doubt we will be returning as spending $50+ dollars for two mediocre grouper sandwiches is not what we consider a great option. We don't even spend that much on food at Amalie Arena where everything is overpriced but seems much better quality...

Wanted to try something different. We were in the area and so we tried Big Ray's. Must say it was great choice. Sandwiches were excellent. My husband had the Ruben and I had the blackened grouper. Both were delicious and plenty big. You definitely don't leave hungry. We would highly recommend. We will definitely be going back.
Patricia DoRosario
Good food and great service. A bit hot and with flies outside eating. That is the only thing unpleasant.
Steve P
The pricing was justified as soon as we all took our first bites - Big Ray's is the real deal. Seafood tasted fresh and the entrees and appetizers were plentiful. Grouper cheeks were flaky and enjoyable, shrimp po-boy was one of the best I've had, and the smoked fish dip is highly recommended. Their key lime pie was also worth. While the interior is small and has a few tables, the outdoor set up is pretty nice, even at night (just pack mosquito spray).
Brian Garvey
Some of the best seafood I’ve ever had. Growing up on the ocean you tend to know what’s good. Fried seafood is light and not batter heavy. Conch fritters are the best I’ve ever had hands down. You get a lot for your money and great service. First time here but will be back soon.
Jack Fraanken
Been here several times and always delicious. I recommend the blackened grouper sandwich with fries and coleslaw.
Mrs. Teresa Williams
The Best seafood in town!!! The food is made fresh per order. We had the grouper Sandwich and the blackened peel and eat shrimp. Both were delicious. They have an awesome covered outside eating area with plenty of space and nice plants. The parking is at the front door so you dont have to do a lot of walking. The restrooms are clean. The service is great! This is a great place for the entire family!!
paul orantes
Amazing seas good the grouper sandwich amazing and Buffalo shrimp the best. Great service too.
Jeff Girard
You Won't find a better grouper sandwich anywhere!! This is hands down the best grouper sandwich in the state of Florida! Get it blackened and you won't be disappointed! Just like grouper sandwiches used to be back in the day!! Deelishis!
Susan Macbeth
Absolutely fabulous fresh grilled or fried fish. Best grilled peel your own shrimp ever! Grouper Sandwich and sides were delicious! Very friendly staff. So excited to come back with family and friends.
Tyler L
Food was fantastic and it was really nice to visit a local spot that served great food
Darlene Athey-Hill
Love the shrimp basket. The onion rings are yummy. Plenty of outdoor seating and it's dog friendly. Super nice staff. We eat here frequently.
Jonathan Krynitsky
The best fish sandwich I’ve ever had! Love both the fried and blackened grouper. The fries are also fantastic. So sad I live far away, but always make time to come here when I’m in town.
Keke Sutton
Very cute place with a great concept. The fries are delicious. If you're in the mood for FAIR food like fried oreos or food on a stick check it out. The Lobster Dog was okay. A must try if you love lobster, but it's not something that you would crave or have to have more than once.
Stephanie B
Lobster Corndog and Blackened Grouper! Tasty treat. Fries and onion rings were great as well. Good service and covered outdoor seating. Definitely recommend.
Darren Neal
Nice little spot with outside seating. The food is good and everything is fairly priced. The staff is friendly and even the cooks are great at taking to customers.
They have a long menu so there are more than enough things to try.
Hot sauce and ketchup should be in small containers instead of bottles.
Parking is a little cramped but people are coming and going so it was easy to find a spot.
The outside seating is a little dated but it is not a big deal. Nice little spot to try
Nicolabe Benbow
Great find, tried the grouper sandwich blackened and regular with fries. The grouper was amazing this is definitely a must have eatery if your in the south tampa area. I especially enjoyed sitting under an the awning have lunch with my best friend my hubby.
sTyleYe
You can’t go down to the beach and not have seafood! If you’re from FL, you have access to fresh seafood everywhere, anytime! This is one to keep in rotation.
Don’t be fooled by the small space. This tiny kitchen packs a POWERFUL PUNCH!
Fresh, fast and original. Order inside off their chalk wall and they’ll bring your meal to you.
Gourmet style presentation, flavor bomb ingredients. Price point is high for quality sea meat and thoughtfully prepared ingredients. If you can afford it, don’t sleep on this joint.
Paul V
First time trying Big Ray’s as I’ve been wanting to try it for a while now. First off, when you search this restaurant it gives 2 dollar signs but that can be deceiving. The site had the menu with prices but obviously the prices were not accurate/current - not even close. I wanted a grouper sandwich and the price on their website was $15. I did not look at the chalkboard with current prices (lesson learned) behind the counter when I got there as I knew what I wanted and what I thought I expected to pay according to the website. I ordered just a fried grouper sandwich with the onion rings. The sandwich itself was $22! Last time I was at Bern’s, they were on Howard, not Interbay!! I’m not cheap but I do expect accuracy and transparency. The total with a 15% tip I included came out to $27 and change. Again, this was just for a fried grouper sandwich that comes with either fries or slaw or onion rings for a dollar extra (which I got) and no appetizer nor a drink either! They should just put “market” for the prices on their website instead of leaving up inaccurate prices as my sandwich was $7 more than advertised on their website. Now for the food. The onion rings were excellent with the right amount of batter (light). The grouper was also battered lightly which is what I preferred and was perfectly fried and not over cooked. The filet was neither thick nor too thin. The bun was fresh and not soggy. I liked the fact that they used fresh romaine lettuce as well. The tarter sauce was unique as it was very chunky and not just your typical mayo and relish. For the price, I definitely would have expected something much bigger and honestly felt cheated. It was like ordering from a fast food restaurant like Arby’s and their fish sandwich (size comparison that is). One review mentioned something to the effect of “not just another oversized piece of fish on a bun” or something to that effect. They must’ve been referring to Hooter’s big fish sandwich. Well if you have ever been to Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill in Clearwater, you get an oversized fantastic grouper filet for much less (even their colossal size is cheaper) and fresh as they contract their own boats that supply their fish daily. All this and a fantastic view on the beach I might add. They also have accurate prices on their website - I know this as I order from their pickup location occasionally in addition to dining at their location. No, I am not employed by Frenchy’s but had to add a comparison in this review of similar food and quality. In summary, the food is excellent at Big Ray’s but if it is great food along with value you are seeking, you might want to disregard the misleading $$ designation (more like 3 at the least) and confirm the current prices at the location before ordering so you won’t feel disappointed/sticker-shocked like I was. Fantastic food with high prices are expected at fine dining establishments, not at semi-rustic establishments where you place your order at a counter in a tank top and shorts.
Nahaoki
Best grouper sandwiches in Florida! Anything you’ll get is freshly made and seasoned nicely. Take it from a fat man who’s on the Big Ray’s Seafood diet, I see food from here and I don’t at jt. Oh don’t forgive the garlic parm fries;)
Joshua Speer
Best fish sandwich I've ever had, and I've had quite a few. Blackened Grouper here is the best around. Corn dogs are also unbelievably good.
SynSha Fashions
Great lil hole in the wall type of restaurant. The food was good however the fries n onion rings was not freshly hot. I would've prefer if they were made to order. This is an improvement not to be so critical. Try them out just make sure your friend food is hot.
Keith Emrikson
This is a place we found years ago. I told people & friends a MUST PLACE to go to.
It creates
My FAVORITE Food item.
A LOBSTER CORN DOG!!!!!
They have other offers but in my opinion.
A Lobster Corn Dog is something everyone should try.
I have mentioned it to a number of Seafood places I have& Go to but sadly non have adopted it, so it IS a "GO TO"
PLACE for me/us to go to!
It's actually a deciding factor when deciding vacations.
Dan Theman
This place is a must-eat-at! If you haven't been, its wonderful, eclectic, and fresh. I cannot recommend this place more. The service was amazingly fast, food was hot, and their keylime pie is to-die-for!
Celida Velazquez
Grouper sandwich was good it could have been bigger for the price that we paid but it was still good with a fixings not a fan of the onion rings but a super big fan of fries super yummy. Had the crab cake not a fan of that either. Key Lime Pie was good to finish. Overall experience was very nice outdoor seating small place Hidden Gem
Matt Cruite
If your nightly dreams don't include the blackened grouper sandwich and parmesan fries then you're wrong.
James R
Fantastic food and people. This is definitely a hidden gem.
Zack Gagnon
The fish sandwiches here are delicious. Definitely a must get for seafood in the area. The location is quite small with not much parking though.
S. Perez
I had been itching to have my schedule match theirs and be able to come and check them out.
I was a bit thrown off by portions, flavors and what not, and I won’t say it’s not a decent option to eat and definitely has great room for mind blowing improvements, but overpriced for sure.
Matthew Voke
Good grouper sandwiches, good sides, good atmosphere, good beer and wine selection.
Edit 4/19: our recent visit was far different from our first. The service inside was joyless and rushed compared to previously friendly. The outside eating was completely fly and ant ridden. They have to do something with the trash and extra food to cut down on the bugs. No music playing this time either? What’s going on? Is the normal manager away or something?
Anthony A-M-P Jimenez
Grilled grouper is so fresh and absolutely scrumptious! If you want straight from the ocean seafood, this is one of those places here in the Bay Area?
Jon Ramirez
This place is legit. Found this through a YT vlog / Mike Chen / simply dumpling/ and It never disappoint me. I loved the lobster corn dog, fried grouper cheeks and the blackened grouper sandwich 🥪 .
Christopher Lee
Short and sweet: this was one of two restaurants I had to eat at again before I left Tampa. Amazing blackened grouper, slaw, and conch fritters.
Calvin Yerke
We did blackened grouper, fried and the grouper cheeks with the Thai sauce to round out grouper, and all was perfect. It is a crispy fry does not lose the meat, and everything is very fresh. We also got a shrimp basket and shrimp roll. The roll is more like a lobster roll with a mayo based shrimp salad, but with a ton of shrimp, very nicely done. I could eat the cheeks and Thai sauce everyday. We shall return.
Amari Shaw
Lobster corn dog was delicious! And the blackened shrimp was goodt. Portions where worth the price.
Scott Johnson
Awesome spot in South Tampa. My friend and I both got the blackened fish sandwich with fries. Living in Florida near the coast our entire lives we have had a lot of fish sandwiches. I can honestly this is one of my favorites. The fries are also amazing and the staff was great. I will definitely come back sometime.
K T
Delicious food, friendly staffs. Small indoor tables but there is nice outdoor eating area. We ordered fish dip and grouper burgers( both fried and blackened) were so tasty.
Zach
Shrimp baguette sandwich, and garlic parmesan fries were amazing. Only dislike was the ac is barely on and was really hot. But the food was great.
Dave Gaudio
Came for dinner on a Saturday. Quick line, quick service and predominantly outdoor seating. Nelson was playing acoustic instrumental hits to set a nice mood. The grouper sandwich was great, they used romaine instead of iceberg which was a nice touch. Heads up on the coleslaw-it's got pineapple in it. I was sold though after a couple bites. For a seafood place I was really happy the French fry oil didn't have a fishy taste. My wife loved her Grouper Reuben. I'm looking forward to going back already! They've got a variety of local beers in cans (cigar city, Orlando brewing) and bottles (copper tail) as well the staple domestics.
valerie maud
OMG.. the best grouper sandwich and conch fritters.. and EVERYTHING ON THE MENU!! The grouper sandwich was blackened and cooked to perfection.. served on a sesame roll.. crazy fresh!! You won’t eat anywhere else once you park at Big Ray’s and feast.. and wash it down with a cold beer that’s locally brewed.. DYNAMITE! FABULOUS! Thankyou for doin the grouper sandwich justice—and I don’t have to go to John’s Pass to get it!!

Perfect roadside eatery! 😋 Reasonable prices, great selection of local seafood, cheerful and super efficient employees that make sure you get your delicious food in a timely manner. Domestic beer and a variety of soda available. 🍺 🥤 Convenient outside seating available, picnic tables for 1, 2, or more. Noon time there's a good number of customers but don't let that affect your decision, the staff are quick to ensure no one has to wait for long. Did I mention the food is Delicious? 🥪🐠🐟
Angela DiLoreto
Great grouper and great grouper to bun ratio! The fries are amazing too!
Charles Nichols
Every time we eat there it is a pleasant eating experience. The grouper sandwich is well seasoned, I’ve had it darkened and grilled, both are excellent! The garlic Parmesan fries are delicious and crispy.
Mohammad Lutfiyya
Tried the blackened grouper sandwich and I wasn't disappointed at all. Generous portion of fish that is perfectly seasoned and cooked. Also, got to try the fish dip which was also delicious. The staff there are very friendly and helpful as well.

If you're looking for fresh, made to order seafood in a judgment free, no frills joint, Big Ray's Fish Camp is your place. Menus? No! It's written on the chalkboard wall behind the counter.
While on vacation we checked this place out. My girlfriend ordered the peel and eat shrimp, I ordered the shrimp po' boy. We were both pleased with our meals. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and not rubbery.
It looks like the a stage meal is between $12-$15.
Big Ray's reminder of us of Tarks, a restaurant near us in Fort Lauderdale.
Pamela Hartman
Good burger cooked perfectly not overcooked like most here.
I wish I had seen the special menu sign below the counter for Buffalo grouper bits as I would have preferred that.
Hint : put specials menu up alongside of regular menu or on an place on the counter to easily see
Shayla Deppen
We pass this place all the time leaving Macdill heading back home. We were on base in the evening and decided to make a stop for dinner. I would consider this place a dive and I mean that in the most endearing way. You place your order inside a small area big enough for just a couple tables but most people were seated outside on the patio. We went on a Friday so there was live music and the vibe was just perfect. I saw several people with wine bottles so definitely noted lol! (bring my own wine, okay:). I ordered the yucca with blackened shrimp. My husband initially ordered fried shrimp but then decided to go with what they are known for--the grouper sandwich (he got the blackened). Kids got shrimp baskets. It would have been nice if the baskets themselves were bigger because it was difficult with everything squeezed in the small container.
Normally my husband has the food envy trying to eye ball and eat whatever I order. My yucca and shrimp was so tasty but I had to have a bite of his sandwich and OMG he almost didn't get it back. It was so flavorful and as much as I was enjoying my food, I was already telling myself I would be getting that sandwich next time. He loved it! I stole a couple of his fries and it was just as amazing with the seasonings they added. Everything was delicious.
I always love finding a gem and Big Ray's didn't disappoint.
Pat Rubin
We heard about this great hole in the wall restaurant from Charlie Belcher on Fox 13!! We can confirm all he said about how good the food is!! We had corndog lobster, fried shrimp, grouper cheeks, onion rings, garlic parmesan fries and key lime pie!! We enjoyed it all very much!
We would definitely go back again!!
Leslie Baines
I’ve been a fan since they opened. I had one of the specials last visit, delicious Buffalo Grouper Cheeks and a Deviled Crab! All 7 of us were impressed!
Glen O'Sullivan
Great place for a seafood fix. Fresh seafood in the midwest is frozen twice. Always try to find these places. The grouper is the best seller. They had the Peacemaker on special, so had to try it. Shrimp/Oyster Po'Boy. Very fresh and delicious. Coleslaw had a light vinegar and pineapple, sweet and sour. The donuts are great too.
Craig Heyne
Food was amazing and the folks that work there, kind and helpful!
Joseph Briggs
Haven't been in years. Just as good as I remembered! Even though I'm now gluten intolerant they were still able to make great dishes for me. We came in minutes before they were closing and they still gave us top notch service. TO ME this is the epitome of great service. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.
Devoe Digital
I have to say BIG RAY’S FISH CAMP has the best authentic seafood sandwiches in all of the Tampa area. This is a must try sandwich spot of local, fresh, and authentic seafood. The owner Nick is an all-around guy with great taste. What used to be a fish market, the owner Nick continued the seafood legacy to create such an exquisite seafood sandwich masterpiece. IF YOU’RE IN TAMPA- DON’T FISH AROUND!!!...GO NOW!!!
Kim Nauman
Could not stop eating the fries!!! Yuca was cooked really good ...ordered take out after we ate full meal🤭 …
Regina Tate Myatt
1st Impression make a difference. Inside dining area definitely an eye sore and not very clean. I immediately thought that I found paradise. Shrimp po boy, the Shrimp was golden brown and crisp. 3 hours after having ate it I was throwing up and I don't throw up food ???
Scott Richardson
Great casual dining option. Lots of seafood choices fried, grilled and blackened are options. Poo boys, sandwiches, burgers, appetizers and kids options. Indoor seating is very limited but tons of outdoor seating under sun shades at picnic tables tables. Live entertainment on some nights. Friendly fun staff. Food is amazing. Ranked 7 out of 79 restaurants serving seafood in Tampa. Expect a short wait at the door to order. Food is brought to your table. Can take a little time. If your in a hurry call ahead as they do carry outs.
Dion Sarita Acevedo
Great portion on the Grouper sandwich and the side of garlic parmesan fries hit the spot! Service by the staff was top-notch too! Definitely lives up to the hype!
Nasasha Harvey
Great food and lots of outdoor seating. Peel and eat shrimp were amazing! Dog friendly as well!
Twinkle Toes
Best lil hidden gem in south tampa. The blacken group sandwich with garlic Parmesan fries so delish! Food is fresh with the grouper being caught here locally. Definitely recommend to try and I will be back again!
Paul Rodriguez
If you have shellfish allergies, you’ll have to pass. They pretty much use the same grill for everything. Same goes for the fryer and everything that’s fried. At first, they offered to cook the pork for my wife’s pork sandwich in a pan, but a few minutes after ordering and paying, they came and told us they didn’t feel comfortable doing that and refunded us. So, shellfish allergies will be out of luck here. I’m sure with a little effort they can come up with a solution for instances like this.
Jeffrey Kleinfelt
Whenever visiting family in Tampa we make sure we either get lunch or dinner from Big Ray's, I get shrimp po boy and wife gets Blackend grouper sandwich with onion rings on both. Always excellent and very good.
Mark Greenwood
They wouldn't give me the WiFi password
C Jason Baab
At first glance, this unassuming building would be a place where you simply drive by and marvel “oh that looks like a nice mural.” You’d be a fool. This gem is incredible! Some of the best blackened grouper I’ve ever had. Lots of flavor and quick service. Would recommend, to everybody!
Emily Snedeker
Tiny place, but great fish sandwiches! One of those places you have to just know about. Prices aren't cheap, but they're on par for what you order, and everything comes with a side.
Jessica Villanueva
I ordered the lobster corn dog and was not disappointed, the meat was sweet and delish! My husband ordered the Grouper sandwich, he liked it so much, I didn't even get a bite before he inhaled it! Totally recommend 👍
Benjamin Walker
Believe the hype. This is the best blackened grouper sandwich I've had in Tampa. They also come with fries topped with parmesan cheese, garlic, and cilantro! Very laid back atmosphere and the staff is great. Highly recommend this place! I was in and out in under 20 minutes for lunch.
Lily Ice
In love with this place! Their food is amazingly delicious.... filled with many delicious flavors and freshness!
Nicolas Genao
Great and fast service. Great food!
Austin Duck
My buddy and I had the lobster corn dog x2, deviled crab, conch fritters, and the grouper sandwich. I can’t be more clear than this, when I finished my meal the first thing to come to my mind was head. I felt like I just finished a long day at work, sat down on the couch and my smoking hot trophy wife (that I don’t have) unzipped my pants and gave me the best bj in the history of bjs. A food coma is soon to come.
Dina Johnston
Great meal today. The grouper was perfect and didn’t need any sauce. Love their pineapple coleslaw and fries so I had to get both.
Mary Ann Wheeler
It was the best. Real old Tampa fish camp feel with a Caribbean twist. Had yucca and blacked shrimp. Divine!!
Joy Alvarez
Was excited to eat here after all the amazing reviews but I thought it was just OK. The food was over fried and overpriced. While it was not bad, I would not go back there again.
Randy McGiveron
Went there on a recommendation for the grouper sandwich. It was good, however I feel the price was a little on the high side.
Juan C
Good food and great atmosphere...their Blackened Grouper sandwich and salad Is awesome!
Lisa Mellinger
Excellent grilled grouper! I had the grouper cheeks. They were so good! Big chunks with the right seasoning and the chili sauce was on spot..warm enough but not too hot. The outside patio was also excellent.
Jared Hurst
We stopped by this weekend on the east to the airshow. Wife and I got grouper sandwich. I got the hot chicken sandwich. We split a key lime pie (begrudgingly). Everything was excellent. Atmosphere feels very Tampa-y. Great location, prices were good. Will definitely be back.
Jason Gipson
I actually don't like seafood, but a friend recommend the place and I loved it. So gotta try more of their menu.
Andrea Meredith
We were looking for an awesome seafood restaurant while visiting Tampa, FL. Don't let the building fool you. My mom got the blackened grouper sandwich and I got the blackened shrimp burger. It was amazing...the only thing I would change is the amount of lettuce added to the burgers but some people may like it like that. The staff was nice, which is an added plus!
Tim Bagnieski
Been trying to get here for two years and my visit did not disappoint. The blackened grouper was phenomenal and taste is better than any sandwich I’ve had in Tampa.
My only disappointment was the piece of fish was very small compared to most other stops I’ve visited; however, I will be back to try more stuff!
Love the area, outdoor seating and overall experience.
Austin Hersh
What a great find Big Ray's is! Their grouper sandwich is one of the best I've ever had!
Konstantine Palanski
Worth a stop, but I wish the Shrimp Po Boy had some more tang/excitement to it. The coleslaw was bland, stick with the fries.
Tiffany M
The food looks great but for the price it wasn't worth it. The grouper sandwich was mostly bread so the grouper got lost in the sandwich.
Catalina Betancur
I live in the area… and this place is great! The fish sandwich is amazing!!! A must try
Kelli Matheny
Great grouper sandwich! Love that onion rings are a side option. Plenty big for me & hubs to split. He got a side of coleslaw. It’s not my favorite. He liked the vinegar taste though.
Craft beers are overpriced though. $6.75 is too much & it would be nice if beer prices were listed.
Kyle Ames
Great oyster Po boy! Staff forgot our appetizer smoked fish dip but the food was great at this local joint! Amazing truffle fries
Julian
I Love this place. The food is amazing, I suggest sticking to the seafood though. The photo is the shrimp po boy.
Bernie Dulaski
My buddy had the Reuben Grouper with slaw and I had the blackened grouper sandwich with onion rings…..freaking awesome!
Plus, the women working there are so incredibly nice. If I didn’t live all the way up here in Wesley Chapel, I would be in three days a week.
Em Ladi
Went earlier today, around 5:30. The young woman that took my order was friendly, and even brought my to-go order out to my car even though I said I'd wait inside - the wait wasn't long at all. I got the oyster po boy with fries, shrimp corn dog with coleslaw, and key lime pie - yes, all for me to try! Everything was delicious! Only critique I have was the cilantro, but it wasn't a big deal to pick off. I'll definitely be back! Thank you!
Doemi Hernandez
Grouper sandwich X 2 for us...very good sandwich and the conch fritters were also good. Beer was warm and the flies outside were relentless. Next time we'll just grab it and go.
John Bhisitkul
My blacked garupa sandwich looked appetizing and was pretty good. A quality offering. The place is divey in a good way. Though some ants on the tables. Counter service was nice and attentive. Near McDill base. Several customers were in uniform.
Alex Mcdonald
If you live here locally and you haven’t been to Big Ray’s Fish Camp 😳. All I can say is...What a shame! It’s so awesome to have a place like this in your ‘back yard’. I suggest that you please try for yourself. You can thank me later! …
Tracey Pate (Tracey P)
Amazing fried grouper sandwich! It can be ordered fried or blackened and it comes with a side of coleslaw, fries, or handmade onion rings. I got the onion rings and was glad I did, they were terrific. The grouper sandwich is on a bun with shredded lettuce, tomato, white onion, and a generous amount of tartar sauce which is also very delicious. If you're looking for a outstanding grouper sandwich this is the place to go. My only regret is that I didn't take a photo to post--i had to get busy eating.
Nathan Ben Israel
We only get to come down to Tampa on special occasions(we live in Maryland), and we try our best to find good grouper sandwich. This place hit the spot, and to top it off they had the best fried Oreos my wife and I have had in a while. We will definitely be coming back here again.
Mark Beaty
This This is small but absolutely great place. Highly recommend. Had the conch fritters and wow! The shrimp poor boy was fantastic. Didn't try it but they have a lobster corndog, I am sure it's terrific. If your in Tampa it's worth the drive.
John
The best fish sandwich in town without any regrets in my decision
Holly VanDeman
Yummy fish sandwich with casual outdoor eating space. Brought our dog who enjoyed sitting under the picnic tables.
charles burand
Still the best Blackend Grouper sandwich in Tampa. Garlic fries and the unique pineapple slaw are both awesome. The tarter and portions are what puts them over the many other good choices in Tampa for pure food quality. It's not fine dining, we mostly get to go, or occasionally on a nice day take advantage of the picnic tables outside. Service is always friendly and pretty quick unless they are slammed.
Joe Lackey
Really fresh, very tasty grouper. The fried grouper cheeks are just amazing. Lose a star because you have no alternative but to eat outside and please don't forget to take your wallet...quite pricey in my opinion.
Joshua Kohath
I am not a fan of fish but my wife is. We got the grouper sandwich/burger and it was exceptional. No wonder people seem to like this place a lot!
As for my personal experience during my visit: Some Airmen and Space Force officers were there from the McDill AFB that's nearby. Such a cool moment for an Army Reservist that I am
van
Went on a Sunday and it was like eating at home. Very relaxed and calm atmosphere. The girls taking orders were super nice and recommended the grouper sandwich. Absolutely excellent food and service.
Lindsey C
Delicious food and fast service. The blackened grouper sandwich was the overall favorite. The soft shell crab sandwich was great too. Garlic fries were fantastic. Plenty of shady outdoor seating.
Ashlee Ford
By far the best place to eat in Tampa. Everyone is very friendly and the food is wonderful. We ate outside and the waitress brought us our ketchup and napkins. (We said it was to go but decided to stay, Sorry!)
Doc
A hidden gem. The grouper cheeks and oyster po boy we're bangin. The staff are also absolutely gorgeous with great smiles and personalities. For sure my go to spot while working in and out of Mcdill.
Jarrad Cofield
Got the blackened grouper bites. They were delish. Staff was friendly and helpful, and the place was not busy while I was there. Great place to have lunch!
Todd Morin
Great Grouper sandwich!! I tried 3 other restaurants that claimed theirs were the best, but they weren’t even close.
Toni Corbin
Excellent staff & service.
Food could be better seasoned but it was fresh and hot.
Andrisha Daniels
Omg what have I been waiting for. The food is AWESOME. I tried the fried shrimp platter and I was not disappointed. Fresh and the shrimp we’re pretty big and meaty 😜 I loved the seasoning on the fries. I also purchased a homemade deviled crab and it was delicious. I bit into a piece of crab shell but At least I knew it was real crab meat. Great hidden little gem in South Tampa. I will definitely be back
Kat C
2 Grouper sandwiches (1grilled, 1 fried)and french fries were good. Onion rings were poorly sliced and battered. We were charged $3 more than the website menu states for each meal. Wanted 2 sides of cole slaw, but they didn't have any. Got fish dip and crackers. Fish dip was extremely salty. There was an extremely long wait for our food. Not going back there for that price and quality.
Shaoyu Xue
Very friendly staff and great seafood! I had the blacked grouper sandwich and my wife had the shrimp roll, both to go. The food tasted fresh and a good place for a quick lunch. Will certainly be in our rotation.
Plenty of parking around.
Brandon M
Must visit if you're new in town! Ridiculously great fish sandwiches.
alex encinosa
This is the best blackened grouper sandwich and their parmesan garlic fries in the Tampa Bay area.
You have to go to the one on interbay it's the original little hole in the wall with a line out the door.
Great fast service
S S
We go here when we celebrate landing a deal, it is that good. I have only had the blackened grouper sandwich and it is the best, I highly recommend this place. We celebrated today and it was perfect again, thank you Big Rays.
D. W.
Had Blackened Grouper, wife had Salad with Grilled Grouper Cheeks. Both were just amazing. Every trip to Ray's is a delight. Ask for the candle to be lit, keeps bugs away!
Katherine Sayler
Great food and a nice patio! I really enjoyed it.
Doug Green
The fried oysters were right on! The real surprise was the pulled pork. Some of the best we have ever tasted. They do their own and get it right! Just a small simple place with lots of outdoor picnic tables. Highly recommend!
Elizabeth Ferreira
The blackened grouper sandwich is as excellent as everyone says. The peel and eat shrimp are some of the best in the bay as well. Don’t get the fish dip. Waste of money compared to all the other great offerings
Christian Riley
Lobster corndogs and Onion rings
ML Andrews
Customer service was quick and friendly. First time having conch fritters and they were pleasantly nice taste. The shrimp was cooked to perfection--their batter gives a crispy crunchy experience, while the shrimp retain great flavor and texture. Also, the birds are friendly. Lol.
Shawn Parkinson
AMAZING FOOD!!! Pictured is the Oyster Po' Boy and the Grouper Reuben!!
Mark Reynolds
Ordered the 1/2 lb. burger and Shrimp Basket, both had fries. Staff was friendly and gave prompt service.. Food was well prepared within a short time of ordering although the breading on the shrimp was just a little bland but the cocktail sauce helped. Fries were good with the Parmigian Cheese on top and didn't require anything else to help it out.
I didn't get to experience eating there as we ordered to go, but the area appeared to be clean and well taken care of. The only thing that irked me was that we tried to order ahead right after they opened and I let it ring until the voice mail picked up. Called immediately after and tried another 30 times after giving 1 minutes intervals but the phone was on a constant busy tone. Either they are extremely busy (which I can see because they were when I got there) or they took the receiver off the phone to send it to busy... I would hope a business wouldn't do this, so I will just chalk it up to them being super busy.
Overall, the food was well prepared and well presented, in a quick manner and was tasty. That's a win and we will return. Great job!
joopdog11
Fried grouper sandwich... 🙂 Absolutely delicious... Definitely coming back. The burgers are delicious as well, mmm. …
Chris Caley
Had the fried grouper sandwich, amazing! This place is busy but moves the food! Will return to try more of the menu.
Lawrence Thompson
Can't beat the fried grouper sandwiches. Love to go there.
K X
Shrimp basket was good. Large fresh shrimp. I wasn't a fan of their cole slaw though.
Jamie Sorenson
Food is excellent, came for the grouper, but understand that the pulled pork is amazing. I'll be back.
Eric Wenzel
Good spot, in fact, one of the best for grouper sandwiches in the Tampa area.
Outdoor tables could use some help. Flies and rat traps make it a little less appetizing, but those sandwiches are so good! We usually do take out and do recommend it for that.
Wendy Flanagan
Good food and large portions. Might have just been an off day, but food seemed better last time we were there (2019). If you’ve never been, it’s worth a visit. Grouper sandwich is the top pick.
Captain Red Ed Brennan
Been wanting to visit for sometime and the food was outstanding and worth the wait
Andrew Kinbacher
One of the best grouper sandwiches I've had.I also had the grouper cheeks and they were outstanding.
agustin acevedo
This place reminds me of a lil place in pompano called the fish shack the food is amazing the place is small and cozy and the people are friendly what else do you want,I had the lobster corn dog with fries and I'm going back tomorrow for the grouper sandwich
April Baker
I had the blackened grouper sandwich, the grouper was great, the tomatoes 🍅 on the other hand were green/red. My fiancé got the fried grouper sandwich and French fries and said it was “pretty damn good”
Super cute place! Would recommend! …
James Simpson
I'll just add my name to the long list of people who have recommended the blackened grouper sandwich. Great little spot amazing food!
Cary Ritter
When busy, the food took a long time. But worth the wait.
Mark Stewart
Very tasty grouper rueben with crispy not greasey fries.
Danny Hodgin
Great food, nice atmosphere. I liked the oyster poboy and donuts for dessert!
Tom Thornton
Great grouper sandwich and interesting menu!
This place is a converted seafood market and is not a place to go if you're on a date night...of course that depends on your date. If he/she appreciates good food then this is a great choice.
I had the grouper sandwich, and while there are several very interesting items on the menu, I think I would be forced to order that again. Generous portion, cooked perfectly, and very fairly priced.
There are not a lot of good places to sit inside, and outside it can be very warm and buggy, so definitely consider ordering to go. You won't be disappointed!
Shaun Milano
Had the blackened grouper sandwich. The fish is great but the roll doesn't live up to the sandwich. The sauce is great. The onion rings were cold. They do too much pre cooking. It would be better to wait a little and have hot onion rings. This place could be 5 stars with a few changes.
Jess C
Great customer service and delicious food! I got the grouper sandwich with onion rings. Next time I plan on trying the Buffalo shrimp and fries or cole slaw. Will be back soon!
Andrew Mattern
The food is good. The price is too high. The dining area is very relaxed and completely unpretentious. I split a sandwich with my wife and we each got an adult beverage plus a "side" of slaw; with tip, $36. The side was a ketchup cup sized portion costing $2. The server was wonderfully polite and nice.
Rob Dewey
ABSOLUTELY YUMMY!! Their signature Grouper sandwich is really delicious. I suggest having it grilled accompanied by their famous fries which are dusted with parmesan cheese and cilantro for a memorable dining experience. The "no frills" atmosphere only adds to the enjoyment. Perhaps a bit pricey at $14.00, but worth every penny. Go and enjoy!
D H
Had lunch here for the first time! Excellent Blackened Grouper sandwich and Oyster Po' Boy and the fries & onion rings were delicious! Weather was great for their dining patio. We will certainly be back!
John Hostinsky
This is an awesome place. The food was amazing. The staff was friendly and they knew their menu.
I ordered the grouper reuben. It was amazing. The Cole slaw was fantastic, made with pineapple. I had onion rings that were fresh and crispy.
My friends got the grouper sandwich blackened. Both were extremely pleased with their choices.
They have limited seating inside but plentiful picnic tables outside in the shade.
I definitely look forward to returning to this place soon.
Jo Feagans
This place really is a gem. Tiny on the inside with BIG flavors coming from the kitchen. Fantastic outdoor seating area and a gentleman was setting up to play live music as we were leaving. They have big fans, community style seating, 2 tops, and bar seating near the front door.
We had the blackened grouper sandwich with onion rings and a Caesar salad with grouper cheeks. Both were delicious, well portioned, and competitively priced.
The staff were all very welcoming and fun - GOOD LUCK ON YOUR AUDITION, NICK!!!
My only tweak is that the Caesar salad had onions on it...like, a LOT of them (large slices as well as a handful of green onions), which would've been fine if it was listed because I would have simply ordered without. Listing would take up space on the board which is admittedly pretty full. Basically, I know for next time, and if you take time to read this review, you know for next time too!
Leslie Speaks
The food here is delicious! I had the fried grouper sandwich and onion rings, my son had the blackened grouper and French fries, and my daughter had the shrimp Caesar salad. The seafood was cooked perfectly, very moist not dry. Portions were huge. The only downside was it was at dusk so outside seating was buggy. Inside seating is very limited. Very casual dining.
AB
The food was good and the people working there are very nice. You order inside and then sit outside at picnic tables. It's a little pricey considering it's not full service and you're eating outdoors on a bench... That being said, it's different and we did enjoy our meal. Not a place I would go to routinely, especially in the summer, but I would for sure go back again.
Bluegypsy
Love this place, best grouper anywhere!!
Always stop when in Tampa!
Ronda Patterson
Traveled from Missouri to Tampa for my mother's surgery....father grew up in Gulf Shore...eating seafood is on the list of things to do for lunch...this place is AMAZING!!! My mother got the blackened grouper with their seasoned fries--AMAZING...my father and I...the shrimp Po'Boy--AMAZING..he got cole slaw and I, the onion rings-AMAZING!!! We each received SO MUCH FOOD! Definitely worth the trip and the money! They absolutely set the bar!!!
Don Wolford
Very tasty blackened grouper; extremely friendly and welcoming staff. The seasoned fries were a surprising treat, almost like truffle fries. A bit expensive and slow, though I did catch it at the back end of a surge in patrons. Everything was fresh. I'll definitely be back.
Good Food
Delicious food. Local beer. Outdoor seating. So much to love.
Joshua Rivera
Incredibly tasty treat of fresh grouper and shrimp. The French fries were covered with Parmesan cheese and cilantro and had the perfect crispiness. The pineapple slaw was cold and refreshing and complimented the rest of the entree. The grouper cheeks were perfectly fried and did not keep the flavor of the oil they were fried in.
Very low key restaurant far enough away from the higher profile places located within South Tampa. Overall very good food and great ambiance.
J2M H&M
It's a dive, love dives!!!!!. Best Grouper sandwich and onion rings. Outside picnic tables. Very casual .GREAT SEAFOOD and yuca also. Will go back. They are popular, may be out of beer when you get there.
Dennis Ortega
First time here after several years of friend’s recommendations. Did not disappoint. We ordered the Grouper and Hog sandwiches and both were on point! Definitely will not be the last time visiting this joint! Recommended 👍🏼👍🏼 …
Jessica
Always a hit! Love this hidden gem. Grouper cheeks are amazing - large, sweet, tender chunks of grouper that are perfectly blackened or fried. Blackened is my favorite. Grouper sandwich is delicious as are their garlic parmesan fries it comes with. Can't wait to go back.
David Saunders
Some of the best fish around.
For those of you who are not garlic lovers - be warned the fries come with garlic cheese on them and it's fairly prominent in the tarter sauce.
Bernie Buckley
Beware: The paper men had nu prices are NOT the same as the chalk board prices. They ran out of fries which was a side complementary dish...so the option was Cole slaw or onion rings which was 1 dollar more. A roughly 32 dollar meal turned into 50 dollars after tax and 15 percent tip.
Monika Paradox (MonzParadox)
Always great to eat at the fish camp. It can get busy for lunch so be mindful. Especially weekends. But they are speedy, fresh, and delicious. We brought the dog after the beach and there's plenty of outdoor seating. I was given a little Togo box to put water in for my pup. I wish I had a photo of how awesome the blackened grouper sandwich is, you just gotta trust me. I love the fish spread as well. If I had to suggest one thing... I do wish they had some jalapenos (fresh or nacho-style) to top the spread on the crackers, that's my favorite, but simple gets the job done for them. Can't complain. Try for yourself
Sandra
This place is amazing; it's no frills, delicious food!
I have the fried grouper sandwich and fries every time I come here. I keep telling myself to try other things, but I just can't deviate because it's that good.
That being said, I have sampled the onion rings, the buffalo style grouper cheeks, philly cheese style grouper cheeks, onion rings and fish dip that my colleagues have purchased. All of them delicious.
The staff here are also great, very friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu.
I look forward to this place everytime I come to South Tampa. You can't come here and not try this place.
Stephen Swingle
Food was "out of this world" good. Best grouper sandwich I've ever had. Service was fantastic too. Ordered inside and the girls brought the food to you outside at the shaded picnic tables.
Lady Allen
What delightful little hole-in-the-wall. This was our first time. But we were welcomed and given some yummy suggestions. We got a fried grouper sandwich with fries, blackened shrimp burger with onion rings, and had to try the lobster corn dog. Everything was super delicious. Absolutely no complaints. You have to try it I promise you will not be disappointed
David DeJesus
I got the grouper sandwich and it was really good. The onion rings that can with my meal were a little bland. The atmosphere was nice and i really liked the decor. The indoor seating is limited which wasn't a problem because it was a perfect night to eat outside.
Trey Kelly
This place is a gem. Do not be deceived by the outside appearance. It reminds me of the family seafood I grew up with as a kid in Tampa. I tried the grilled grouper cheeks. They were delicious. They have ample seating outside if the tables are busy inside. The staff was super friendly and helpful.
Stanley Mays
Great grouper fish sandwich, I am just not a fan of Parmesan cheese on fries.
Ryan Hunziker
We went around 8:00p so parking wasn’t a problem. Ordered 2 fried grouper sandwiches with fries, a deviled crab, and 2 beers. The total came to $50 not including the tip. They bring the food to you regardless if you’re sitting inside or out. The staff is really friendly and helpful. All of the food was awesome. The grouper is their main sandwich and it doesn’t disappoint!
Steve Perry
This place is absolutely phenomenal as far as the food the atmosphere is perfect also. we had the blackened grouper sandwiches with french fries and onion rings in the most marvelous shrimp I've had in awhile. The service was also a one the Aurora the place was quite pleasant. We will go back there over and over again now that we know where it is and what type of food and service that they have I recommend anybody that wants a good sandwich or some shrimp or a whole host of other things to go here
Will Davis
I had Shrimp po boy and Conch Fritters & friend of mine had the Grouper Fish Sandwich with fries and we had deep fried oreo's everything was excellent.
Chip Weiner
This is a quaint place with rustic charm. The food is very good but it's expensive! It is usually fairly crowded so pack some patience if you go. If you have the money, you must try the lobster corn dog. It's extravagant but delicious. The grouper sandwich is about the best around here.

Been here twice in the past week. First for fried Grouper sandwich, second time for blackened. Easily one of the best of each I've ever had. Everything is fresh and unique. Their fries and homemade onion rings are killer as well. They top the fries with grilled minced garlic, fresh cilantro and grated parmesan cheese. They let us try the onion rings and I will be ordering them next time! Atmosphere is laid back and nice as well and the staff is polite and welcoming. The inside in kind of small but it adds the the allure of the place with the wooden floors and local fish pictures everywhere. They do offer plenty of outside seating as well.
Highly recommend.
Kathy Brown
The food here is great! The atmosphere, great too, if you know what to expect. Because there is very little seating on the inside, with little air conditioning. Outside, 8--10 picnic tables, some including your picnic ants, with tarp-like covers for shade, but they are porous, so won't help when it rains!
Our party of six visited at 6:30 yesterday. We ordered the shrimp basket, blackened grouper sandwich, key lime pie & other scrumptious offerings. All were happy with our meals, though we had to move inside when the skies opened up. The shrimp were 8 large ones, pefectly breaded & fried, served with Cole slaw, fries, or onion rings. The grouper sandwich was a good size, too large for the ladies, with the same side choices.
So come hungry, but dressed for the heat & our usual evening thundedstorms, or get take-out. Prices are reasonable.
Mikala Carter
The target sauce is like no other. The lemonade is bomb. The shrimp basket is off the chain. The fish salad my husband gets doesn't even make it 5 minutes up the street. We demolish it in the car. My FAVORITE fish spot. I'll drive 40 minutes to get it.

Came back after 2 years because I live far and they haven’t missed a beat. Any bad rating is a lie. The grouper Sami blackened is heavenly. The cashiers are sweet and always smiling. And they are quite quick. Always a fav.
Katherine Walker
Great place, the seafood is amazing. It gets busy, and you wait in a long line sometimes but its well worth it. The customer service is on point. We had a slight issue with our order when I brought a few out of town guests and Big Ray's did everything to accommodate us and make it right. This is one of my favorite places in Tampa. Great laid back atmosphere, with stellar food and caring employees, cant get any better than that!
Gabe Bourgoin
Had the blackened grouper sandwich. Seasoned nicely. Very yummy...also had both flavors of cheeks. Well worth the trip.
Kathy Cowart
Awesome food but it takes time to prepare and usually busy. The shrimp Po-Boy and grouper sandwich are incredible!! The lobster corn dog is a must try too! Actually haven't had anything I didn't like here. Blackened grouper sandwich with garlic fries pictured.
al williams
Very good local place - really good fresh food. After several years food is still 5 stars. Maybe best grouper sandwiches in the area. This review is for the Big Ray's on Interbay Blvd (not the one on Franklin St.)
Adam Jarema (ThisGuyIRLv2)
This is by far the best place in Tampa for Grouper. The Grouper Sandwich and Grouper Ruben are divine! It's a simple place with awesome eats. A bit on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. Fresh fish and fresh ingredients. The fries here are some of the best I've ever had!
Christopher Brown
Food was a little pricey but it was quality catch! Breading on friend grouper sandwich was just cornmeal but not t was light and fresh. Local brews were refreshing as well. Overall one of those little dives you will remember! Took the pup too. Oh but the flies were big and plentiful though.
Ric Castillo
Def a do-over! Very fresh seafood - I can taste the freshness. Our server, Lindsay, made some great suggestions. We had the blackened grouper sandwich with crispy onion rings, and the shrimp corn dog with Parmesan and cilantro fries. WOW! Totally worth the drive from Tampa Heights.
KellyAnn Logan
Excellent food, very casual and fun atmosphere. The service was great. The grouper sandwich was one of the best I've ever had. There was also live music. A really cool place we'll be visiting often!
Beverly Davis
Great food. Grouper ruben, French fries, onion rings all wonderful
Michael Graham
Delightful staff
Great picnic seating
Best grouper sandwiches in town
Greg Counts
Grouper sandwich was good, fries were excellent and the onion strings were not so good. The price was high for lunch IMHO. I might go back and try something different considering how highly rated they are. Perhaps I just got a combination of things that didn't agree with me.
Debra Piper
Friendly and efficient staff, cozy atmosphere, great food cooked to perfection, reasonably priced. Was our first time here and will definitely be going back!
Maria
The nice women behind the counter recommended the blackened grouper sandwich for me as a first time and it did not disappoint! My coworker got the shrimp sandwich which he raved about as well. I don't normally love onion rings but I ate ever single one of their homemade, fresh battered version..
Sarah K.
I ate here yesterday & today again.. I was blown away!
I give this place a 10 out of 10!

Everything was so delicious. I love the interior designing of the restaurant. I wish I could’ve congratulated the owner (Nick Cruz) himself on his success & such great food! I myself have a dream to own a business preferably a cafe/bookstore.. we’ll see where life takes me.
Richard Kienast
The food is fantastic really good deviled crab, conch fritters, and the shrimp was awesome. Just need to do something about the flies swarming all over. If you hang zip lock bags with water and a penny in the bottom from the 4x4s it would keep the flies away and its chemical free. Just a suggestion. I will be back just in the winter. When the flies are gone.
Mike Mazureski
Small main building with limited inside seating, but lots of picnic tables outside. Smoked fish dip and grouper cheeks were great! They were out of the deviled crab and conch fritters though. The Hogfish sandwich was on special today so i had to try it. It did not disappoint! Don't forget the key lime pie! Excellent and tarty!
Donna White
First off let me say this... if you haven't eaten here, go! However, I must tell you that if you aren't paying attention, you'll drive right by the place! It's tiny and they have very limited seating inside. But they have a large outdoor dining area with picnic tables so you can enjoy your meal outside if the weather permits you to do so. Grouper sandwiches are awesome and they serve them with the best truffle, garlic and parmesan cheese fries I've ever had. TIP: Go early for lunch cause they get slammed at noon.
Bambi Cramer
Wow!! The food is amazing here! We had a group of 5, conch fritter for appetizer were fantastic, 2 in our group had the grouper rueben ( marble rye bread, cheese with slaw instead of saurkraut & delicious sauce) 1 had blackened grouper sandwich (fish so tasty & melts in your mouth), 1 had shrimp burger which is their specialty & it's superb, & 1 had the shrimp po boy (shrimp were so fresh & bread was great)! Service was friendly & very attentive! Cute little interior, very casual with picnic tables outside under canvas. It looks very small & wasn't sure what to expect, but we were so happy with the experience, we will go back many times!
JOEL HERNANDEZ
The grouper sandwiches super delicious..
Little place but cook delicious..
Bob In Tampa
GREAT PLACE FOR QUICK SEAFOOD!!
Instead of driving over to Clearwater or St Pete for seafood with all the tourists.. we decided to stay a little closer in S Tampa and try Rays. WE'RE GLAD WE DID!!
We had the Fish spread, fried grouper cheeks, fried shrimp, island coleslaw, onion rings and grilled grouper sandwich!
Mom is a lover of all kinds of fish and preferred the fish spread over that at Hula Bay or The Getaway! She loved the fried Grouper cheeks over the Grilled grouper sandwich (they tend to not stay firm between a bun). Like the Fried Group cheeks, the Fried Shrimp was lightly battered, fresh and well flavored. Dad is a huge coleslaw fan and didn't care for it. Mom finished it but probably won't order again. I despise thick battered massive onion rings and was wonderfully surprised with hand-breaded thin onion rings in a very light batter and were flavorful.
Walk-in, order at the counter with a name and grab a seat and the staff will run them out to you very quickly! they only have indoor seating for like 10 and lots of room outside on the 10+ six foot wooden picnic tables out on the outdoor patio under floating sun sails overhead! Average price per entree was $7-9 for appetizers and $10-12 for entrees!
Overall.. Great place for to-go food or delivery via any service!
Wylie Stivers
The grouper cheeks cannot be beaten, fantastic doesn’t even begin to cover it. The grouper sandwich is great, too but all of the stuff on the sandwich drowns out the wonderful taste of the fish. I’d give them six stars if possible. Tried going twice but I think they were closed on Monday, I was bummed.
Amanda Reid
Fun place, good food at reasonable prices. Pleasant wait staff. Small interior, but outside picnic tables under canvas tarps make for casual, but relaxing dining. The raggae singer on the evening we were there added to the pleasant atmosphere. There is a small selection of homemade desserts, and the key lime pie was spot on. We'll be back.
Marilyn Sakkis
Grouper sandwich was enormous and very tasty but could have been cooked more...
Boyfriend is fries...so yummy but served cold. I complained and waitress sent another.
No one could open wine bottle...boyfriend went to back and opened.
I still will go back!
Nicholas Lurty
Awesome grouper sandwich, shrimp pony, and huge corn dogs.
Chris Knapp
Excellent food. Grouper Reuben, grouper cheek po boy, conch fritters.
Robert Tiffin
Hook, Line and Blackened Grouper Reuben!
In Tampa for an industry meeting/convention and was shared the tale of a fabulous sandwich.
We set sail from convention seeking this deliciousness.
Literally steps from the convention centre, we found Big Ray's!
The sliding open window service was fun, and sincere,
We were given our "your food is ready glowing puck thing" and sat under the cover, under a fan and managed our building Pavlovian responses.
The sandwich was all it that we had imagined, fresh flakey blackened grouper, with a perfect smear of thousand island on just the right toasting of the bread. I could mention the garlic parmesan fries here, but then you might just stop reading this and get on board to Big Ray's FIsh Camp...oh wait, that's what you should do...drop anchor and go!
Christopher Oliver
The blackened grouper was cooked to perfection! The Fried Grouper and Cheeks were too. The onion rings were amazing too. The blackened grouper was cooked to perfection! The Fried Grouper and Cheeks were too. The onion rings were amazing too. The menu is simple, but they do what they do very well. That's how I love it!!
Margie Schneider
Make no mistake, it's 5 stars because of the food - don't expect much from the location. It's super small, almost more of a take-out place, although there are a few seats outside. But, don't let what you see from the outside stop you because you are in for a treat.
Here you will find fresh seafood, likely caught TODAY, cooked to perfection in a variety of ways, and served with friendliness and good old fashioned hospitality. They've got a lobster corndog, which everyone raves about. I loved the fried grouper cheeks, and the shrimp po' boy - which was so full of shrimp, I almost couldn't finish it. And the onion rings arrive the way you wish ALL orders of onion rings would - super crispy, while light and oniony. Just go and eat their food. You really won't be disappointed.
Michelle Lucido
Fast, friendly service & amazing food at reasonable prices! Go for the grouper!
Frank Lane
Just had a great lunch there. Best Grouper sandwich.. Also, the onion rings were terrific as well.
Cant wait to return.
Hope no one else discovers this gem.....hate to have a crowd!
The staff very helpful, friendly as well.
Chase Will PoWer
Food was good and fast! Don't let the like fool you. They are cranking out food. Enjoyed it
Bill Waller
Very tasty! I had the fried Grouper sandwich. It was a large flakey white grouper fillet with a delicious batter. I had the coleslaw as the side item. The onion rings were very good as well. There was some kind of mix-up with the price of the onion rings I thought they were less than I was charged. When I mentioned it they unhesitatingly made it right. Great little seafood place close by!
Rick Walker
The atmosphere is just like it sounds, outdoor seating which I never thought I would do but it was cool weather and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Fish sandwich was really good but kind of expensive , I threw the Conch fritters in the trash, mushy on the inside and didn't taste like much. I would go back and try something different. Pretty crowded so I imagine most of the food is good.
Kevin White
So fresh you'd swear this place was on the water.
All the fish is fantastic, I like to get it lightly blackened.
I don't really recommend the lobster corn dog. It's just kinda awkward to eat. The grouper sandwich is where it's at.
Cat H
Ate here for the first time recently in the outdoor seating area and had a great experience. It is dog friendly for outdoor seating and loved getting to bring my dog along. There are large canopy’s for shade. Ordered a Cesar salad with shrimp and it was delicious. Will definitely be going back
Leo
Cozy casual spot far from fancy, but the food is awesome! You can't go wrong except with the fried conch were not all that. The grouper sandwich was delicious the live music had good vibes.
Emily G
Had blackened grouper sandwich - grouper was perfect, Aoli yummy, bun was so-so, fries super good. Coleslaw had pineapple in it which we didn’t like. Def amazing fish though!
Paula Ramirez
Huge Grouper Ruben Sandwich. I ordered it with the cole slaw (they add pineapple) good and refreshing!
The sandwich was very good and rich. The only reason why I’m give the 4 stars is because we really wanted to sit outside (us and all the customers) but we end up inside (it’s a small place) because of all the mosquitos, no one was able to eat peacefully, mosquitos are all over. The girl from the counter was very nice and brought candles to each table but it made no difference. It looks like there’s something going on with the building next door and they have an infestation of mosquitos.
Sarah Taylor
I went there at about 3 p.m., they close at 4 so there were not very many people there. I ordered grouper cheeks and a beer. The grouper cheeks were served piping hot and they were fresh and delicious. It was very informal and a great place to stop in for a quick bite. I thought the price was pretty fair too.
Christopher Burger
What a Amazing gem down in South Tampa. Chef Raymond "Nick" Cruz and the staff there are wonderful. If you have not been it's a must try. we went there one Saturday and they where giving out sample's of Shrimp and Grits. The flavors blew my mind. The way grits where cook with the Cheese, Chives and Garbanzo Beans topped with some really nice seasoned shrimp was to die for. Still to this day not on the menu but when you go ask about it Because if you are lucky and they have it you will be glad you did. Listen i could go on and on about the food, Staff and beer they have there but i think i will save that for you to experience it.
Ron Sjoblom
Big Ray,s is a neighborhood fixture that is well known by word of mouth. If old fashion seafood sandwiches and baskets are your desire, they are definitely a great choice. No tables with linen table clothes just picnic benches outside.
Ann Menchen
Hands down, the best place for a grouper sandwich. The grilled or blackened grouper is delicious and healthier, but indulge and order the fried grouper, it's so worth it!
Harvey Goldberg
Holy Moly......I want to live here and just keep shoving their food in my face. The fried shrimp was excellent but.......then we had the fried key lime pie. Luckily I ignore my high cholesterol every once in a while. You need to go to this place.
Robert Foster
The area is alittle run down, there is very little indoor seating. I was expecting a seafood menu when we got there but there is more BBQ and other items that seafood on it. The blackened grouper sandwich was awesome. The coleslaw was made with vinegar and pineapple and was not my cup of tea.
David Pierce
Some of the best food I've had in a long time. The blackened grouper sandwich was amazing. The outdoor seating is cozy and the fresh air just added to the atmosphere.
Brian Mountz
This place may be small in size, but it's big on good food. My first experience here will def have me returning. The blackened grouper sandwich was amazing paired with their homemade onion rings. I also have to mention their fries(topped with chopped garlic & parm cheese) & the mayo free slaw( a big fav of mine). They will def be seeing me again & again.
Michelle Coelho
Our first time here. The smoked do was amazing. We All had grouper sandwiches. We can't stop talking about it today. It was very good. We will be back.
Leslie Wilson
The food was very good the customer service was excellent the cook as well as the cashier were very helpful knowledgeable about the food. There were not that many seats on the inside so we sat outside and they brought the food to us. The only bad thing I can say was you know how it is when you sit outside the bugs and the heat but that was totally not there fault. But we enjoyed our food.👍👍👍👍
Scott Robinson
Could be great if they paid attention to the details but they are inconsistent. I've had a great grouper sandwich but the fried oyster sandwich my kid got the other day was way undercooked. I want to like them but they screw up some of the basics too much. I'll go again but stick to certain items.
Timothy Wert
This is a cool little place in Tampa. The food is amazing although I got the $27 lobster corn dog and the lobster was gummy. The rest of the food was great. I love conch and the onion rings reminded me of the ones I got in Portland, Maine.
Patrick Lipsinic
Great food and simple mom and pop restaurant. Very recommended
Just visiting for the day and was the first place I found off base for seafood.
Tom Wheatley
Excellent grouper sandwich. They have a couple of good local beers in cans and bottles, too. Local servicemen and police tend to eat here. They tend to know what's best in the neighborhood. That should be a good enough reason to visit.
Garth Arevalo
Best grouper sandwich anywhere! Regular or ruben, Big Ray's is the best. The shrimp burger and lobster po boy are also amazing and worth every dime. Further, his onion rings are the best I've ever had. This place is authentic and delicious.
Mona
Fried shrimp was so good and the onion rings too. Super great value and flavors!
Chip Fox
Great place! Dont let the outside fool you. The grilled grouper sandwich is very good. Sides are good as well. Very limited indoor seating availible but nice outdoor space if the weather cooperates. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Ashton Lowder
Everything is amazing here including the specials. A few of my favorites are the shrimp burger (made almost entirely of shrimp with no fillers), lobster corndog, peel and eat shrimp, and the fried key lime pie. The food is incredibly fresh and the flavors are amazing. This place gets busy so try and hit it before peak hours.
Paula Hull
The food was excellent, but and it's a big one all but 2 small tables were outside, so we sat outside which I usually don't mind. But dispite their use of citronella fuel cans they had burning, we spent the entire meal doing the shoo fly dance and keep away from the ants jig as we ate. Because as we ate our food the flies and ants were eating us. I recommend taking the food to go.That way you can enjoy in the comfort of your home sans the extra critters.
Paul Felder
Service was slow. Only 4 tables inside. We got the fish dip appetizer and the "famous" grouper sandwich grilled with onion rings and cole slaw. Fish dip was flavorless and portion was small. The grouper was delicious but the bread was soggy even though we got the tarter sauce on the side. Didn't care for the onion rings or cole slaw either. Overpriced $14 sandwich. Glad Tampa has another fish restaurant but wouldn't recommend it.
Tony P
This place looks like a sort of abandoned shack BUT... ITS AMAZING! OMG this is an instant favorite for me. The Blackened Chicken Sandwich and Pulled Pork are amazing. Size of your meal is AMAZING... Price and value are AMAZING! They give military discounts (for vets). God Bless Tampa for this place,I'm sure it will be here for a LONG while.
Yolanda Rios
I ordered the wrong shrimp 🤷♀️. But the blackened grouper is gooood! Coleslaw was plain and no flavor, onion rings are a waste, no flavor and greasy. Buffalo shrimp barely any sauce and breading was soft instead of crispy. 2nd time I've ordered from there. I guess it's hit or miss and when you pay a lot it's not worth taking that chance. I dont know if I'll try anything new. 🤷♀️
Allison Duffus
Best hidden gem in Tampa. Menu is small but food is fresh and extremely delicious. Probably the best grouper sandwich in Tampa. You have to try the parmesan/garlic fries and the hand breaded onion rings. Very relaxed vibe. Good selection of local canned craft beer. Definitely in my top 5 favorite restaurants in the entire area.
Michael Coats
The oyster Po'boy was very tasty!
Jereme Monette
Small, local spot for seafood, fried goodness, amazing service, and subtle twists on classic Florida fare: I really, really like this place. It's a traditional Florida-style seafood shack with solid grouper sandwiches, good burgers, and delicious shrimp corndogs (a must try). Police and military flock here for fries smothered in garlic/Parmesan and local beers from the cooler. Not the best grouper I've had in Florida, but maybe the best in the Tampa area and the sides are delicious. I wish it were a buck or two cheaper given the location, but $15 for a grouper sandwich and $10 for a burger isn't bad. Come here on a nice day for plenty of outside seating.
Berry Crim
Normally I would not go out of my way to visit a place called a 'fish camp', however, I went to see a friend on mine perform there (they have live music outside) and I was blown away by the food. I had the blackend grouper sandwich and the onion rings. I've been back twice. I ordered the same thing... I hear it's all good, but I dream about that sandwich. I don't know about other fish camps, but this one is worth a visit.
Allison Aiken
Our favorite place for seafood in the Tampa Bay Area. The lobster corn dog is a must try if you’ve never been. Good quality food.
John Wooton
Fries are good. Grouper sandwich was good. Lobster Corn Dog was a little disappointing (maybe just luck of the draw). Overall, a nice experience though.
Brian Carrera
Me and my partner went there during our vacation, and it was one of the highlights! The restaurant was cozy and worn (in a good way?); the atmosphere was genuine and inviting. Our order was taken by one of the coolest, professional, and earnest people we have met down here. Ashamed we didn't get her name but she was blonde and tatted up, shout out to you girl! And the food... THE FOOD. Amazing is an understatement. We had the blackened grouper which was so ridiculously flavorful that it hurt to see it disappear into our mouths. Ever had fried shrimp? Well if it wasn't from Big Ray's then no you haven't. Crunchy and not overcooked #droolemoji. One of the best food experiences ever. Go. Right now.
Rodolfo Morales Moraes
Shimp Po Boy...awesome. I high reccommend!
Tracy Brown
Found this place by Googling "kid friendly dinner south tampa" in hopes to find a casual restaurant with open, outdoor seating because I have 2 very young boys (2 and 4) and going out for dinner in the evenings can be extremely challenging when you're single mommy of 2. It had great reviews and was t far so I decided to go for it and I'm glad that I did. 😊
The food was fantastic, the staff had extremely good energy as well as the other local patrons. We will definitely be going back (with or without the kids 😁). 🙏🏻💗😊
Tiona Jones
This place definitely has some good seafood! They make the best fried shrimp, AND the shrimp is HUGE! Lol. I've had the shrimp po' boy and shrimp basket... both with the fries which are amazing! My hubby has had the grouper sandwich which is also very good. They're a bit pricy considering it's a lunch spot, but I'd still come back once in a while to eat here!
Rich Reidy
Outstanding! Food is fresh and delicious! Grouper was very good but for me the Shrimp Po Boy stole the show. Worth the effort.
Omar Pace
Food is amazing and the cashier definitely was helpful with food selection seeing as it was my first time eating at this establishment. I recommend the grouper sandwich with parmesan and cilantro fries and the thai chili wings. Only negative was our food didn't come out at the same time.
Nick Frohm
While on our way to another restaurant Saturday afternoon we drove by and seen this small place was packed. We decided to stop in and see what it was about. GLAD WE DID! Blackened grouper sandwich with homemade onion rings was delicious and a great combo. Here's a new one, lobster corndog...yum. Never heard of it before but with a side of coleslaw, delicious combination. Staff was very friendly. Wait time for a Saturday lunch was about 20 mins but well worth the wait as we met new people. This Sunday evening we tried another place for dinner in the area and my wife recalled the owners sister mentioned that Ray's Key lime pie was really good so we decided to stop by for a slice to go. Place was closed for the evening but the chef himself set me up with a slice. My wife thanks you sir, the best slice of Key lime pie we have had, no joke.
I travel a lot for work and look for places like this. And next to 12 Bones in North Carolina, Big Ray's is at the top of my list. Highly recommended!
Rob M
In search of the best grouper sandwich in FL brought me here and they did not disappoint. This is a very small building but they have ample outdoor seating.
ethan wall
blackened grouper sandwich. shrimp po boy. parmesan garlic fries. and craft beer. need i say more?
The grouper sandwich was big, and spiced just right. the staff was friendly. quaint hole in the wall in a good way vibe - and a wide selection of hot sauce. we tried them all, and i recommend you do too. you won’t be disappointed at this casual seafood oasis!

I took my family there base on a recommendation by a friend and honestly it was really a treat for us. Beyond what we expected. Food , staffing and pricings were phenomenal. I recommend this place to any and everyone. Nice outdoor and indoor dining. Great hangout and or family atmosphere. 5stars Tampa Bay. New to Tampa and driving around and stopped here. Been coming since then. Workers are really nice and helpful. Food is good and the prices you pay. My favorite is the Lobster shrimp corn dog. Its expensive but worth it. Its actually my cheat item on my cheat days. Lol.
Mileidys Ayres
Best grouper sandwich I’ve ever had! Got it blackened with the garlic parmesan fries! Absolutely delicious and the service is awesome! Definitely going back!
Jeanette Earley
WOW, best blackened grouper and blackened shrimp. Onion rings are light, crunchy, and not greasy. Outdoor dining makes this a must-go.
Melinda Calabrese (Melinda Buchanan)
I had the blackened grouper sandwich and the fries loaded with the parm cheese, cilantro, and garlic. My husband had the hot chicken sandwich and plain fries. It was all amazing. I personally don't even like fish, but this was delicious and wasn't fishy tasting at all. Very excited that we found another gem in Tampa to enjoy.
Babs Evans
Always Good & fresh. Love their blacken grouper sandwich. Very large portions of grouper. Love the friendly rustic atmosphere. Seating is limited inside. More Seating is available outside weather permitting.
Carissa Walker
I'm pretty sure I review every single time I eat there- which is often. But this place is seriously a gem. Get the blackened grouper sandwich and an order of conch fritters. So fresh and absolutely to die for.
Chi St
The pork sandwich is gigantic so be sure you're REALLY hungry if you order this bad boy...lol... It is also very good and seasoned nicely. The sauce that comes with is also good. My (Cuban) friend ordered the Cuban and liked it enough to return in the future for another (and she also makes her own at home, so 'nuff said). The fries are crispy and delicious! Very laidback, outdoor sitting area is nice and relaxing.
Erin Guerra
Run, don't walk, here for the freshest seafood in town.
If you crave really fresh seafood at great prices in a no-frills atmosphere reminiscent of Key West, New England coastal seafood shacks, or the best hole-in-the-wall jointa everywhere, this is the place to be. There's almost no indoor seating but plenty outdoors in the form of wooden picnic tables. Everything we tried was great and I highly recommend the Shrimp Po Boy.
Josh Montenegro
Great staff. Awesome blackened grouper sammich. Sadly they ran out of fried when we got there. I hear they're awesome. Key lime pie was delish. Good seating outdoors.
Aj B
Yucca and shrimp was very tasty. Shrimp aas perfect and the yucca had a nice texture and flavor. The conch fritters were ok, I'd skip those next time. The blackened grouper sandwich was light and flaky. Blackened seasoning was the right amount of spicy. This will be a regular spot for me in the future. Seemed to have a wide variety of other sandwiches as well.
John Riofrio
Come with a little patience. The service takes a little while but it's well worth it. The grouper sandwich was unbelievable. Follow your GPS of choice, find this place, and enjoy some outstanding seafood.
Florida Life Magazine
So yea, we were craving some seafood. We've heard on Big Ray's and finally headed out to let them satisfy that craving. We got the Grouper Reuben, a Shrimp Po' Boy and Grouper Sandwich as our entrees. To start we had the deviled crab. Great food, cool environment. A must for visitors and residents alike.
Sandra Flournoy
It was okay but they definitely do not know how to fix onion rings it was cooked in old oil and falling apart and you sit outside with the flies biting you. So it's $60 for two people I won't go back
JENNIFER MASSICOTTE
There is NO better grouper sandwich anywhere!! We didn't even check into the hotel before coming here. It's our favorite place in all of Tampa.
Kampground USA
It's okay but nothing special...If I'm paying the prices they charge I want a restaurant quality service to match ie Bonefish Grill... The seafood is fresh but not seasoned properly to stand out as their own(unique) flavoring. Once was cool but probably want be going back. Shrimp, shrimp Po'boy, fish sandwich, and fried key lime pie with waters to drink $50 bucks...1 mile from a military base and they don't offer a military discount.
Kristi Nieto
Holy WOW!!! Great food. We order the grouper cheeks appetizer, soft shell crab BLT, and oyster po boy. All delicious and perfectly fried. Huge portions at reasonable prices.
Ashley P
We are happy to announce, we've found our NEW favorite Grouper sandwich! My husband and I were dying to go here for a solid week, after the YelpTB IG page posted a deliciously mouth watering picture of their Grouper Sandwich, a favorite for my pescatarian husband and I. Plans finally worked out where we had a night to go, and ended up getting there within the hour of closing but there were still folks inside and outside dining. Lindsey took our order at the counter & served us, and she was awesome! She was personable & friendly with every interaction, even when she was super busy & slammed with to-go orders and other customer. (I point this out because recently one of our favorite plant-based places has seem to go mega down hill especially with customer service & rudeness so we were happy to have a change!)
Our food came out lickety-split, and as you can see from my photos & videos, was saliva inducing and we chowed down almost too quickly. I ordered the fried grouper sandwich "all the way" aka just has everything on it as the chef does it, and the fries the same way. My husband is not a fan of may-based sauces or cheese, so he opted for no tartar sauce on his grilled grouper and no parm on his fries. We were both incredibly satisfied with our choices, and I took a few of the fries home to have the next day for lunch, and once I started heating up those golden sticks of awesomeness I was hit with the delicious smell of what it was like enjoying our meal the night before.
When Lindsey checked in on us, and we told her how amazing it was, she said they make sure they get their fresh fish daily! And that they are relatively new, only around since 2015, but it seems this must run in their family because their wall is plastered with fishing photos going back decades!
We are always on the hunt for tasty fish/seafood & plant-based meals, and quickly Big Ray's Fish Camp shot to the top of our list! Worth it for the drive up to Tampa!

Good but expensive. Mostly outdoor seating in the heat under covered lanai and no table service. Prices comparable to other full service places (with AC), so you need to decide if tradeoff is worth it. Personally, I think it needs to be less expensive.

First time here, fantastic. Had the grouper cheek po boy, with fries. Was an over loaded sandwich (in a good way). Fries were crispy with garlic. Really enjoyed it. Thank you big Ray.

My family was in town for the Steelers game, we went fishing and wanted something to eat afterwards. Our fishing guide recommend this place. It wasn't the easiest place to find because our GPS kept taking us on the highway and taking us the wrong way then we finally figured it out and found the place. This place was highly recommend but I've had better. I ordered the fish sandwich and fries and coleslaw but what I noticed after I ordered was the had a sandwich called the lobster philly which I would've ordered had I saw the sign. Which was on the counter under the cash register. If u don't know to look there you'll miss it and I did. I think that sign has daily specials or something like that. There is very little seating inside but the have picnic tables outside so if u don't want to sit outside in the heat get it to go. I thought they were a little pricey also for what u get but that's just me. I travel a lot so I have some things to compare it to. I don't have a better option for u in Tampa at this time so give them a try, just look for the sign on the counter with the specials.

Like everything else in this world right now. A little pricey. But, probably the best grouper sandwich in town.

Food was delicious and served quick! They may be knows for their grouper but don’t sleep on the caesar salad or fish dip either! We thoroughly enjoyed our meals!

My first trip, but definitely not my last. Killer chow, quick service. Every other 5 start review is spot on - if you're thinking about coming, stop thinking and get in the car. You will not regret it.

I love BigRay's. Other than the bread (too doughy), their po-boys and grouper sandwiches are fresh and super tasty. Their peel and eat shrimp are grilled and excellent and their onion rings are fresh and terrific. Bottom line is that there are few places that are like Big Ray's and that is a complement. Casual, fresh seafood in a fun and friendly environment.

Awesome grouper sandwich and must try season fries

Went there for the first time today and got the blackened grouper sandwich. It was the best fish sandwich I ever had. When I saw it was $15 on the menu I thought this better be great. It was.

Great food. Onion rings were awesome as was the grouper sandwich. Has an outdoor seating area and there was live music.
Jeremy Newell
Best blackened grouper sandwich I've had in a long time! Excellent customer service and all the food is cooked fresh!
Robert Quinlan
Fried grouper was excellent. We ate outside, a lot of flies sharing our food but service and food was good.

Yummiest blackened Grouper Sandwich I've ever had. It had two filets perfectly blackened, a garlic aoili along with the pickles and onion. The French Fries had fresh garlic, parsley and parmesan....MmMm!!Can't wait to go back!! Big enough to share

The blackened grouper sandwich was out of this world. Pricey but it will not prevent me from returning.

Awesome owners and staff. Despite the hurricane leaving the community without power they were feeding the hungry and tired with smiles and support. Good is fresh and delicious. Nice wine also!!

Visited today 12/13/17 for the first time. I was in uniform I received a military discount went back to get dinner for my mom and fiancé I was told no discount. To keep customer coming back know your policy or honor it if it was done less than 2 hours. The food was delicious!

The grouper Ruben is the best I have ever had!! The onion rings were amazing too!!! Best golden hole in the wall🤗👍🏻👍🏻 …
Kenneth Lee
This place has amazing food. The staff are kind and the wait isn't too long. I've been twice and tried different grouper dishes. I will definitely be going back again.

Love this place. My fav is caesar salad with shrimp
Courtney Ford
Solid 4.5; great service, cute outside shaded eating area, excellent fresh grouper, shrimp, and cole slaw. My only ding was the lettuce - it needed to have the black spots trimmed off. We regardless would come back!
ron walker
Man the fries no words! The black grouper sandwich was amazing 👏 😍 this is a great place to stop and have a bite a bit expensive but worth the experience …
Cornelius White
The place is a novelty. It's popular and fun, with seafood entrees and such, but could be better with the substance of the entrees as opposed to fluff with bread and garnish. I found it strange that chicken wings weren't fried hard, but rather soft. The Po' Boy had an overstatement of lettuce, but it's worth a try.
scovode
One of the best blackened grouper sandwiches anywhere.
Dustin Herrera
Very good food. A little too expensive.
Everything is in plastic/styrofoam, even if you eat there.
Marvin Dryden
Should be 5. The fish was prepared perfect, and the shrimp were Amazing. But they brought all of our food a different times... the conch fritters werent fully cooked... could be great, with medium level table service!
Barbara Willis
I had the Grouper Ruben, Conch Friiters and everything was delicious, fresh and cooked to perfection. If your in the area stop at this little Gem, you will not be disappointed.
Yasmine Abdel
Shrimp po’boy was so good!!!
teresa fernandez
Very busy at lunch but the blackened shrimp and yucca, awesome! Lobster corn dog unique and delicious. I usually stay away from fried food but you have to give it a try.
Robert Dunlap
If you are looking for a really good variety of seafood for dinner or lunch, this is a great very casual place to go! The food is outstanding and the folks are very friendly, not a seafood fan? They have an excellent pulled pork sandwich and other non-seafood choices as well.
Chuck Carlson
The food is good here, the outside seating area could definitely use some attention, ants were overwhelming the tables, and of course the fly's we're pesky....I understand being outside is always open to the elements, maybe a good pressure washing with a bleach product every once in a while. especially with the pets that hang out on the patio! 👍
Christie Stover
The Gator Philly Cheese sandwich was wow! Garlic/Parmsian fries were yummy. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Easy on the wallet. Definitely worth the drive!
Heather Bruce
Holy Moly! Tried this place for the first time, and we were a little scared, but it is delish!!!! Conch fritters and Grouper Sandwich are a must! The parmesan and garlic on top of fries are a pleasant surprise. It's a hole in the wall, but a must if you're in the Tampa area
Emy Emy (Em)
Best grouper sandwich I ever had,,small place with fresh fish and friendly people!! We were in town for few days and went 2 night in a row to eat at Big Ray's!❤
Denise Mckinney
The lobster corn dog with the honey mustard was spot on delicious. The grouper sandwich is worth the hype. Get the fries with all the extras on it. (Its salty but good)
