Reviews of The Fat Hen

Came here for Saturday brunch. It is recommended to get a reservation. We walked in and they had a small window of an hour so kind of got lucky. I took the chicken parmesan skillet and I really loved it. The flavor and taste was good and the chicken had a nice crisp under the sauce. My wife got the eggs Benedict with the dungeness crab. That came with a side of potatoes which were also good. If I have to recommend I would go with the skillet.

Absolutely delicious food, top notch service, and great vibe.
Arrived at 9:45 on Sunday, no reservation, and were told 30 minutes. Less than 30 minutes later, our table for 2 outside was ready.
We were in and out in less than an hour and took the leftovers home.
100% recommend.

Felt compelled to review directly after my meal because it was such a pleasant experience. This place is an absolute gem. Very kind staff and service with obvious attention to quality and scratch-made cuisine. I had the eggs Benedict with ham and it was so good. The hollandaise was so balanced without being too heavy like other iterations. Eggs were beautifully poached. Loved the smashed potatoes too, just a great touch. The house hot sauce is also amazing. I was having a little bit of an off day and this meal picked it right up. So glad I went.

Overall meh! We stopped in on a cold day for breakfast and were a little disappointed. The eggs Benedict were middle of the road and the tomato skillet was sad (and, in my opinion, a little too spicy). The pastries are overpriced at $5 for each. Service was somewhat slow in a tiny restaurant. For a place rated one of the best in Seattle, this was not what we were expecting.

This is such a cute little breakfast spot! My partner and I showed up at 9am on a Sunday with no reservation. They put us on the list and told us to come back in 45 minutes so we did and were seated right when we got back!
We both ordered orange mimosas and we thought they had the perfect ratio of champagne to orange juice. I also got the drip coffee which was good but they never came to refill it like most breakfast places do. I ordered the Pancetta Eggs Benedict and loved it! The pancetta was perfectly crispy, the eggs perfectly cooked, and the altogether flavor was great. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the smashed potatoes that came with it as they weren’t crispy enough for my liking. I prefer my breakfast potatoes less “potatoey” but I won’t hold that against them. My partner ordered the Alla Boscaiola and he really enjoyed it! The bread that came with it was delicious as well.
I also ordered the Nutella cold brew to go and it was good, I would recommend that!
I will say, the place was FREEZING. We did go on a 35° day but everyone inside was wearing their winter coats (including me and I’m from Minnesota so the cold doesn’t usually bother me too much). My breakfast sadly got cold before I finished eating it.

It’s a very small shop but the environment is good overall, so make your reservation ahead of time. The shakshuka is a little too sour to my taste but is still better than other brunch place in Seattle. I love that they brown the top of soft-pouched egg to create multiple layers of texture from silky yolk to firm egg white to crispy thin shell.
One star off because the tip is 20% after tax and mandatory. I get it that it’s a small shop but tip should be calculated pretax, not aftertax. Personally I usually only give 20% for fine-dining or exceptional service but Fat Hen meets neither, so I don’t think it’s justified.

Great brunch spot with new menu items each week. Nice ambiance and could easily enjoy a conversation. Everything was well cooked and tasted delicious.

Our family favorite place for brunch ❤️ The food is always delicious and fresh, we love the skillet 🍳 dishes. Yummy coffee ☕️ , freshly squeezed orange 🍊 juice and yummy sweets. It’s a popular spot, book you table ahead, because usually it’s fully packed. Always friendly service!
Yandong Li
We had the snow crab eggs benedict and alla boscaiola, both are very delicious and savory. I am particularly impressed by the alla boscaiola, its reminiscing fragrance is warming not just my taste buds. Would come another time and try more.

This is the 2nd time we have been here for brunch, before and then after the pandemic and this place got even better. Be sure to make a reservation, as this place is so deservingly popular for its coffee, baked good and brunch menu. Be sure to get a mocha or their Nutella cold brew as they are exceptional coffee choices.
Come hungry and order deep into the menu as the Alla Boscaiola and Camicia are tomato based breakfasts that warm you up and melt your morning stress away with savory understanding and delicious flavors.
Will be back whenever I’m around this area.

Superb skillet breakfast options (amongst many other deliciously worded dishes on the breakfast menu) - don't be afraid to ask for a little customisation... I added pork to the Shakshouka and it was exceptional. Coffee was nice, I went with a Cortado, might have been safer to go with something a little more common to the barista. Weather permitting, sit out front - it's such a cool neighborhood.

It’s a tinnnyyy Quaint little brunch place in the middle of surburbia in Ballard.
Food tastes fresh and absolutely delicious.
The dungeonness crab cake Benedict lived up to its hype. It’s served with either potatoes or salad. Both equally good - I ordered the salad and was pleasantly surprised on how light and tasty the dressing was!
20% gratuity added on ALL orders. So for a Benedict and fresh orange juice - the total came upto $40. A little steep for brunch if you think about it.

We had a little bit of a wait, but it was worth it. Tried the ricotta toast, such a unique mixture of the ricotta and the brown butter date topping! Along with the Shakshuka with spiced lamb meatballs - which didn’t excite me, and the Shakshuka was a bit on the acidic side like someone else mentioned. But the Alla Boscaiola….talk about flavor and seeing those cute little teeny tiny mushrooms honestly just made the meal even better! Their chai is good, a bit on the bland side, but ask for a shot of vanilla and goes from a 2 to a 4. It’s such a quaint spot for brunch and everyone is so nice, definitely a brunch spot to recommend.

Been there twice. Friendly Service. Great taste. I never tried anything like that before. It was tomato, cheese and eggs. I thought ok how can they be super good, they could only be normally good. But then I tasted it I was like WOW. The beard is extremely good as well. And they put service fee in the bill so you don't have to tip them, I love it!

The Fat Hen is a small, cute brunch place with a great menu and vibes. I got the breakfast smash which was a burger with a breakfast-y twist. While the burger was good, the potatoes were to die for. They have a good variety of boozy and coffee drinks- I got the Nutella cold brew which, though tasty, didn’t have a very strong Nutella flavor. I would recommend getting reservations as it is a very small space with limited seating.
Jennifer Fingles
Delicious and creative food, warm and friendly service, all around amazing experience at The Fat Hen. The butterscotch latte and sweet toast was amazing. I devoured the skillet & forgot to take a picture!
Marisa Chentakul
Super unique twist on avocado toast! I was able to get a table on the patio only 15 min wait on a Sunday morning. But reservation recommended
Cxsh
Mouth watering good. The skillet, to die for! I’m gluten free and they subbed the bread for salad. If I got the Benedict, they would sub the bread for potatoes

One of the topmost places in my list for breakfast in the ehart of Seattle. Must visit if you love cozy places which serve the best food. I tried the sweet toast and eggs Benedict. I recommend poached eggs. They were perfectly cooked. Make sure to go early (it gets crowded during peak hours). The owners were lovely and served us great food. #breakfast #eggs #breakfastideas #coffee

We went to the fat hen for the first time in several years today and we couldn't have had a better time. Not only is the food distinctive and unique but it is very high quality! My girlfriend had the Hollandaise sauce on the benedict with prosciutto and it was superb. I had the salmon toast and it was completely awesome. However the best part of the fat hen is the relaxed environment and the lovely people working there who are gracious and a lot of fun. Thanks for a very nice time on a chill Saturday morning and we will be sure to get up early to come over and see you more often. Also I am having the rest of my salmon toast and fingerling potatoes for dinner. Fat Hen FTW!

Having been here a second time I felt I could write a review without hesitation. Although it is difficult to get a table here without a reservation and the staff have no qualms turning people away(such as the first time we went here on a whim without a reservation– note taken). Although I took minor offense to that, the first time I ate here made up for the minor inconvenience. They truly are doing something special here in terms of brunch. Which is hard to say as brunch spots are dime a dozen in Seattle but not one is a delectable as The Fat Hen– you heard it here first. They have a small seating area compared to other brunch offerings but it makes for a cozy atmosphere and an intimate experience which is part of the reason you go out to eat anyways– not just for the food but the ambience of the establishment. Everything on their menu looks delicious which makes it hard to choose and will require multiple return trips to try everything, especially when I enjoy going for the same thing over and over again. Not only is their food outstanding among a sea full of restaurants that throw potatoes & eggs on a plate and call it good, they go above and beyond in terms of service and have some of the most attentive wait-staff. Even if they are not always perfect they know how to satisfy their customer's appetite in more ways than one by amending mistakes when they happen and are quick take ownership over their actions. This goes a long way in establishing a repeat customer base which is the epitome of any service related business– especially the restaurant industry. Thanks and I hope to return once again soon.
Brynna Kathleen Sweet
Adorable location/atmosphere, and super delicious food! It’s normally a bit difficult to get a table, so we arrived right when they opened at 8am to make sure we got a spot! The toasts were amazing, as well as the pastries! We also loved our server and everyone seemed super friendly!
Moe N
Quaint brunch place in Ballard. The service was great and the food was delicious. I recommend making a reservation if you can.
Melissa Gurney
If you love adventurous flavorful foods you've got to come here. Make sure to make a reservation or you'll have to wait. The fat hen tea was delicious and the salmon avocado toast work boiled egg was superb. The dill put it over the edge... so good!
Shweta Jeevan
I’ve been visiting this place since 2018. It’s a delightful spot!
Their shakshuka is beyond delicious! Must try!
Sam Beed
The side potatoes were delicious and crab benny was everything I needed! Went for breakfast on a weekday, cute small restaurant with great service!
Raven J.
They don’t have an extensive menu with too many options, but the quality has never disappointed us. Great neighbor brunch place!
Josh
The food is wow. The staff is kind. This place is a gem. So glad we visited, and a big thank you to management for accommodating us for a very special day yesterday. 🙏
Bridgette Gutierrez
A little pricey but very good, and the staff was awesome! It’s a smaller restaurant, so I recommend reservations.
Hank Lo
The staff was friendly and welcoming. One thing to note is that tip is 20% for dine- in regardless of people.
K BContsance
Amazing place the manager there was extremely kind to us yesterday, my boyfriend and I had been wanting to try this place out for a while and finally decided to go unfortunately we didn't make a reservation but the manager there was kind enough to recommend other places and even gave us a delightful treat to take with us. I'm glad that we were finally able to eat here today the food was fresh and these people are not afraid to use Seasoning yall. Thank you to the staff I apologize for not remembering our waitress's name but she was absolutely adorable and kind and very interactive she made our stay even better thanks yall and keep doing what you doing!
Kyt M
I got the Alla Boscaiola and OH MY GOD! So good! Its something I would never order, but so glad I did. Everything about it was so delicious. My fiancé got the eggs Benedict and it was really good as well. But will forever get the Alla Boscaiola anytime I’m there.
The wait was about 30 min and service was amazing. They even gave us a slice of cake to go.
Sabrina Mohd Nordin
Great place to test one’s patience in waiting to be seated. I went on late Saturday morning with the intention of having brunch but it turned out to be a lunch as we waited for 75 minutes. But oh my God, the Eggs Benedict was divine! The staffs were very friendly and they allowed you to order drinks while you wait. The foods were amazing, but considering the size of the restaurant, I wouldn’t recommend it to a large party. Nonetheless, it was a great place with great food, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.
——————————
went for the second time at 9am on Wednesday, wait time was definitely shorter (only waited for 10 minutes). Foods were amazing as usual.
Kyle Northcott
This place is something special. Not only is the space cosy, inviting, and adorable, but the food is divine and the staff are unbelievably kind and thoughtful. I came here for brunch last week, ordered an Amaro cortado (which I cannot wait to have one again soon) and the Camicia (baked eggs with tomato sauce, ricotta, mozzarella & basil) which was equally delightful. The service was unparalleled - this spot genuinely cares about the experience it provides. Everything was thoughtfully prepared, and the server I had went out of her way to make me feel at home.
momo
Two years later, we finally got to sneak out of work to try this spot. Everytime I passed by before the pandemic there was always a long wait. I came here an hour before lunch and they were able to squeeze me in. Reservations are highly recommended as they are always busy and have a small establishment. Everyone here is genuinely friend and laid back. I ordered the Dungeness Crab Eggs Benedict along with the potatoes. Fresh crab, crispy potatoes and the perfect hollandaise sauce in town. 😍 I'm looking forward to trying brunch in the future or their famous skillets.

I cannot get enough of this place. The cappuccinos are always on point and a nice side of Pasternak to go with it. The sweet toast is always my favorite and love the combination of the cheese and the delicious sweet taste of the jam. I always come here every time I do visit Seattle. Unrelated topic but my crush works here. All the people are so welcoming and super nice. The wait is worth the time. 🥰😍☕️☕️

First impressions are everything.
Pros: Infection control, service, atmosphere, and food
Cons: Wait times
After checking in at the no contact check-in table, I washed my hands with the provided sanitizer and was given an estimated wait time of one hour. The one hour quote was the sole reason I listed it as a con; however, we actually were almost sat immediately due to a no show—lucky us! Once sat, we were asked to keep our face mask on while the waiter was at the table. Otherwise, you may remove them. EVERYONE was welcoming and pleasant. The atmosphere was perfect for Sunday brunch, and the food was worth every dime.
Items tried: Sweet Toast, Shakshuka, and The Fat Hen Chicken Sandwich
The Sweet Toast was top notch with a perfect mixture of sweet and spice. The Shakshuka was a tomato burst delight, but the Fat Hen Chicken Sandwich was everything... From the potato buns topped with honey mustard, frisée, housemade spicy pickle cucumbers, and Fresno chili to the fried chicken breast, this sandwich was a tantalizing experience full of deliciousness.
This was my first visit to The Fat Hen. I allowed myself to be fooled by the small cafe persona and was pleasantly surprised by the big punch that left me wanting more.
Allie Mahler
We absolutely love The Fat Hen and will often travel long distances to come here for brunch on the weekend. Always fresh ingredients and delicious tasting food & pastries. The chicken sandwich was amazing and the shakshuka. The only downside to this place is the wait! But it’s worth it.
Anna du Bois
A fantastic place. Delicious food, and excellent service. But make sure to book a table because the restaurant is small, and fills up quickly!
Michelly Calzadilla
Yummy brunch spot. I ordered the Breakfast Sandwich and Salmon Benedict. Both were very good and decent portions. The side of potatoes were overcooked unfortunately, but otherwise all the food was good. Easy contactless process for take-out.
They automatically charge 18% gratuity, likely due to "COVID hardships", which is counter-intuitive to me. If traffic has significantly declined, why would you force patrons to pay a premium to do take-out with you? The higher cost reduces the frequency of purchases, so not sure how it helps or who it's for.
Anyways, the food is tasty, a little pricey for take-out, but a good local spot.

We LOVE the Fat Hen, they're always so attentive to producing phenomenal high quality dishes. We've never had a undercooked/overcooked meal or a single dish without going the extra mile to get it perfect and pay incredible attention to detail. They don't have a large menu, but what they serve they do incredibly well. There's pretty much always a wait for weekend brunch, but it's well worth it if you're looking for a high quality meal!

What an amazing and adorable breakfast cafe! First off the set up of this place is cute yet extremely small so there can be a long wait, about an hour to get a taste of there deliciousness! We ordered drip coffee and a vanilla latte. Latte art and a great cup of coffee. We got the Levain toast - sweet and it was fantastic. Jam and homemade ricotta on a thick piece of toast. YES. Also ordered the Dungeness crab Benedict. WOW. So much flavor and so much goodness. The potatoes are perfect. PERFECT! You don’t need salt or hot sauce this is the real deal good ol breakfast with some pizazz. Great and friendly service. **came in on a Monday a little after opening and easily got a spot. Please note that it did pick up after 930. ** Thanks a bunch!
Robert Heise
Totally worth the wait on a Sunday! The food was amazing the drinks were on point. I Enjoyed my time at The Fat Hen, great atmosphere, down to earth people. I have a full tummy and ready for the Seattle day of rain!
Jordan Bayles
The brunch here is excellent, great service and vibes.
Olivia Baker
This restaurant is delicious! Be prepared to come early and wait upwards of over an hour for a table. Seating is very limited and there is only one table that can accommodate 5-6 person groups. This place is ideal for parties of 2! You can buy their hot sauce too, but shipments sell out within two days and it needs to be refrigerated.
Suphatra Rufo
Fat Hen is the best breakfast spot in Ballard, possibly in all of Seattle. Beware the long lines. You can't make reservations so you can only hope for the best. It is a very small restaurant but the service is fast so sometimes it is worth it to wait because the food is so good.
The vibe is quaint -- it feels like a farmhouse in the south of France. The menu is simple -- charcuterie, fancy toast, salads, eggs baked in cute little Le Creuset pans with delicious cheese and fresh baked bread. They make an excellent Americano. Highly recommend!
Febry F
Since living in Ballard, always wanted to try this popular brunch place but tried several times and they always full. One time we tried on weekday and we can get in without waiting. Their place is not so big but so cozy. Tried the Egg Benedict and Baked Egg. They were so yummy. I'll come again but for sure not on the weekend brunch.
Deepika Mantri
We travelled over 50 mins to get here (traffic on I-5 was horrible that day). But it was so worth it. We reached around 1:55 pm for brunch and put our name on the waiting list. We were seated in about 10-15 mins. We ordered chai, cappuchino, levian toast and a slice or orange lemon cake with pistachios. Our drinks could have a been a bit more warmer, but the ricotta and jam on the toast were just heavenly and so was the soft orange lemon cake. Next we had florentine benedict with potatoes and in camicia egg bake. Everything was made to perfection including the potatoes which even the big restaurants get wrong sometimes. I might sound exaggerating but it was the kind of food that fills your soul and you think about it for days. Thumbs up for the friendly hostess and service. Will highly recommend.
Angela Wang
Favorite brunch place in Seattle. Prices have skyrocketed but that’s to be expected with the rapid rate of inflation. Still worth the money!
Ryan Dean
First, I would recommend taking a look at their menu before coming here. There's not a ton of options, so don't count on there being something for everyone. It's also not a big place, so there could be a wait.
My friends and I all ordered different kinds of eggs benedict, and they were all delicious. Their hollandaise sauce might be the best I've ever had, and the pepper sauce (for the potatoes) was very tasty (it tastes like red peppers and is just a little spicy). This is a very good spot for brunch.
Dushyant Maheshwary
A great little place with good ambience and fantastic food! Went there on a weekday morning for brunch and still had to wait for about 10 mins, can only imagine what it would be like on weekends! We found street parking just a block away. Ordered the florentine eggs benedict, baked eggs in camicia and a mocha. All three items were amazing! The service was really good as well. Really glad to have found this place and will be returning very soon.
Sajia Aliya (Saj)
My husband took me here for my birthday brunch. Ordered the Camicia and sipped on a mimosa. I'd order the same thing every time! Friendly staff and really great vibe. Expect a wait on weekends. But, it's on one of the quaintest little streets, so you could take a stroll while you wait for a table.
Déborah González Neaves
Delicious comforting breakfast on a winter morning. The eggs Benedict with smoked salmon where delicious, I asked for mayo for my fingerling potatoes, they didn’t have any, instead the waiter gave me extra hollandaise :)
Anna Riley
How have I not reviewed this yet? I've eaten a lot of eggs benny in my life but nothing has topped theirs. Worth the wait if you have to wait, truly the best breakfast in the city. I recommend getting there right when they open as hardly anyone will be there. I cannot rave enough about this place. The pastries are delicious (my favorite are the almond cloud cookies... heaven), mimosas have fresh squeezed juice, baristas who actually know how to pull a shot??? Yes please! I will always recommend this place.
I have never regretted spending any amount of money here.
Viktoriya Burkatska
Food was super delicious. We came in a week day morning for brunch. They were packed! Next time will know to make reservation. Over all experience was great, we did have the option to sip on some drinks while waiting. That was nice of them to offer. The only down side is that this place is tiny. Really wish there was more seating area.
louie galitan
The service was amazing and the vibes were immaculate. An excellent place to have brunch.
Teresa Cole
The best crab eggs Benedict and tomato egg stews things were good too. Highly recommend a trip here. Service was excellent
Dessie DiMino
This place is busy but it's so good and the bakery across the street is wonderful if you need to wait for a table
Shelbi Svoboda
First and foremost, the staff here are A+. We ducked in at 1:45 for a late lunch and ended up ordering two different baked eggs - Camicia and Alla Boscailoa - both under $13. The bread served with these was perfect for dunking in eggs. We got one of the chickpea salads and at $11 is a crazy value for a salad that could feed four. Two chai teas and a complementary scone as they were shutting down confirmed that this neighborhood spot is worth visiting again.
Frank Murphy
Damn! That chicken sandwich was a beast. Used to go all the time, but it's been a while - glad we have made a triumphant return to the Fat Hen fold. Super tasty, great service.
Cydney Justman
Probably the best breaky I’ve had all year. Loved the crab Benedict and their skillets are top notch!!!
Jing Li
Worth the wait!! Their signature skillets are perfect for cold, rainy days: soft baked eggs swimming in tomato sauce, with a loaf of freshly baked bread. Dipping the bread into the hot tomato sauce and pulling out the stretchy cheese was super satisfying, kind of like a deconstructed breakfast pizza slice.
I tried the Camicia skillet with mozzarella and basil, and my friend got the one with mushroom and sausage which was a totally different flavor profile with a little spice to it! They have delicious coffee drinks like the Foghorn latte with lavender and honey, or you can get boozy drinks like a spritzer!
aria
everything was delicious! the orange olive oil cake is a MUST!! the fingerling potatos along with the house hot sauce were amazing. the fat hen fog was so good.
Carrie Wagler
Great service, good mocha, and really delicious food! We both got breakfast skillets. The tomato sauce is perfect and the bread is crusty.
A. Y.
We expected a 45 minute wait and was thankfully seated in about 25 minutes but we waited out in the cold rain. I enjoyed the baked eggs and the prosciutto eggs benedict. I'll return on a weekday or when they take reservations.
Giovanna Oseguera Tapia
Had to wait quite a long time! Really tasty food and service was good but the space was reallly small and I kind of felt like I was eating with the people next to us (lol). That aside, I’d recommend it!
Katie Zeleski
This place is tiny, cozy, and bright. You have to get here early or you'll be waiting a long time for a seat. You can get a beverage and hang out outside in front of the restaurant, however, which is really nice.
Ann
We really enjoyed our meal at the Fat Hen. The skillet lunch was warm, delicious and exactly what we were looking for on a chilly day. Looking forward to coming back.
Bradley Cabe
Make a Reservation. Seriously. This place is so good and so popular and so small. When we got there, there was a 2+ hour wait for walk-ins.
The menu is small, but the food is delicious. I got the breakfast sandwich. It was amazing, though I struggled to eat it. It came with a great arugula salad. I also ordered one of the best mochas in life. Not too sweet, but oh so good. My boyfriend hot one of the skillets which was surprisingly good and the Fat Hen Fog. We also got the smashed potatoes, which were, again, amazing.
Long story short: great food, but make a reservation.
Mike Yim
Small little breakfast/brunch joint. Awesome food, friendly staff. All of their foods are really good but make sure you try shakshouka.
La Wi
I almost don't want to leave a review because it's such a small and already popular spot, but this place could easily be my husband's and my favorite restaurant. Period. Simple and well executed menu with friendly staff and a good atmosphere. What more could you want?!
Janine Corey
Cozy small place with excellent service. Everything made in house. Delicious. Made with care.
Aubrey Mellul
OMG the Alla Boscaiola skillet was incredible, I cleaned the plate!!
The spot is small, we got there a few minutes after opening and it filled up fast and was on a wait right away so highly recommend getting there early.
Service was great. Love the touches of homemade hot sauces and coffee flavors.
Ashwin Raghuraman
Awesome shakshuka and Nutella coffee
Olivia Forster
WOW. I’ve been here twice now and every time I leave I’m SO happy I came. First off the food is amazing- I’ve tried the sweet toast, chicken sandwich and their skillets. Everything is fresh and flavorful! Their sweet toast is to die for because they house make their ricotta and it’s some of the best I’ve ever had. Second their coffee is so tasty! I had a vanilla latte and wow very smoothe and rich they know how to make a good cup of coffee! Third the service always makes my visit that much better. I’ve had the same server twice (I forgot his name but had long curly hair) he really is just the most friendly warm spirit.Very steady inviting attitude even when the place is full and I know how overwhelming serving can be so I just really admired that. All in all one of my favorite places to eat in Seattle !
Brenda Gardner
Great food and friendly staff. They have really good egg bakes and delicious potatoes. It's pretty small, so there's usually a long wait.
Colleen Molloy
Small seating area with hearty food with nice drinks. Great brunch!
Amitesh Srivastava
A little overpriced to be honest! Coffee was actually kinda subpar and the food was good but not something i'd have paid that much for. The one thing i loved at this restaurant was the sauce!
Renee
My partner and I live nearby and come here all the time. The camicia skillet is a must-have if you like cheese, but all of their skillets are phenomenal. Their baked goods, bread, and coffee are all excellent as well. Yes the place is tiny, and reservations have to be made a week+ out, but it's absolutely worth it. The customer service is A+. For a city with a disturbing lack of decent breakfast/brunch options, the Fat Hen really has become a staple for us.
Luca Giatti
Love this place! One of the best breakfast tiny little spots in Seattle. On weekends there is usually a long wait list. Weekdays are more accessible
Sun Kim
I like the small cozy atmosphere but expect like 30 min to an hour wait. Food taste good but nothing extraordinary.
julie phillips
Absolutely fantastic. Wonderful homey feel. Phenomenal food with quality ingredients. Creative and delicious menu. Would recommend!
Megan Mowry
The crab benedict is amazing and the mimosas have fresh juice and are a generous size. Worth the wait for the cozy atmosphere and the amazing benedicts! Try the lemon strawberry cake if they have it.
Jason Xu
Chicken Sandwich is very juicy. Alla Boscaiola is perfect to kick start a weekend morning.
Xiaojing Ji
Their Alla Boscaiola is so amazing - very fresh, flavorful and juicy. So happy to find this place for brunch in Ballard. Super friendly and sweet staff. Definitely will bring my friends there again!
Stella Teichmann
Overall delicious food and very good service, but a little pricey for a brunch café and there were flies in the restaurant.
Brendan Monroe
Wonderful brunch spot! The people who work here are so friendly and accommodating and the dishes are fabulous! Be sure to make reservations though, as this place is small and (deservedly) popular. You'll be very happy you did!
Terence Wong
Wait was long. About an hour long but the skillets and service was amazing. Will definitely visit again.
Kartik Rishi
If you get anything other than the egg bake, you're doing it wrong. It's sooooo worth it. Expect to have a wait, and there is no chance to get a reservation over the phone. Don't wander around, they tend to prioritize people that are right up front.
Eric Peterson
Great spot for brunch or lunch. Within walking distance from downtown Ballard. Street parking available in the neighborhood. Small menu but they only serve the best options.
Spencer Davis
One of the best spots for breakfast in Seattle! Highly recommend the egg bakes which are delicious. Service is always very good. The place is usually busy, so getting a table can be a challenge, but well worth it!
JLH
A friend and I had brunch here today and it was wonderful. The coffee is some of the best I've had. I had an Americano and it was perfect, not under or over extracted with that depth of flavor and sweetness that you almost never get. I would drive to have coffee here.
I ordered Shakshuka and really enjoyed it. The tomato sauce was just spicy enough and the eggs were done right; slightly runny and hot, but not overcooked. My friend had the breakfast sandwich. She said it was very good. It was served with a side salad that looked appealing, freshly dressed greens with the right amount of acidity.
The space is very small, you definitely want a reservation. They include a 20% service fee which is split among all staff. I'm glad they do this and wish more restaurants would but the food and service are so good that an additional tip is warranted.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Fat Hen to anyone and I plan to return.
Edit: I came back today with a friend. The food was even better than I remembered. I had the Alla Boscaiola and it was the most delicious thing I've eaten in a while. My friend had the fried chicken sandwich and fingerling potatoes. The potatoes were extremely good, soft in the middle and crunchy on the outside. The coffee was very good. If I lived nearby, I would eat here every day. Highly recommended.

Great hygiene procedures! Place is tiny but cozy! We enjoyed the Benedicts and the great coffee!

Went here for breakfast with a close friend’s first morning in Seattle (and on the west coast in general) and it left a great impression on all of us! It’s clearly popular, so expect a wait—we arrived at 8:15am (fifteen minutes after they open) and still weren’t able to snag a table for about 20 minutes, mostly because it is a very small place. It’s totally worth the wait; just get reservations if you can! The food was amazing (I ate more than my fair share of the marinara egg dish my partner got) but the service was the best part. They were more than accommodating of any requests or modifications we wanted, and the lovely person that helped us that morning (gorgeous blonde hair, a well groomed beard that vikings would be jealous of and a darling nose piercing) was the best server I’ve ever had (and I’m a server myself). Weeks later and we still mention to each other how impressed we were with them. They got busy for a moment with another table and took a minute to get to us to take our orders, but more than made up for it with a lovely slice of cake. They also covered our first round of drinks, and gave us a cookie to go. We would be lying if we said we weren’t slightly in love with them. Please give this person all of the raises!
Karen Chiang
The entire Fat Hen experience was incredible. The service was top notch and the food was undeniably some of the best with the freshest ingredients.
Our server was friendly, perceptive and attentive. Everything was timed out perfectly. My partner ordered a coffee and I ordered a fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. The coffee was bottomless with refill after refill. He was even offered some in a to-go cup as we got ready to pay our bill!
Food wise, I ordered an Alla Boscaiola and my partner ordered the Shakshouka. Both were straight out of the oven and so delicious and flavorful. It was just the right portion and we both left delighted and full.
I would recommend the Fat Hen to anyone in a heartbeat.
Hanna Landherr
Delicious. Small place so you may have to wait a bit. All 3 of us had the egg bakes.
Sohib Eldali
The food was good, staff were really cool.
Not hella pricy but still a little bit more expensive than I expected 😌 …
Kendrick Umstattd
They may not take reservations, but you can sip on a drink while you wait. Once seated, you will surely feel that the food was worth the wait.
Scott Hamele
Very unique breakfast dishes. A must if you're in Seattle!

The Fat Hen is a cute brunch place that’s good for a casual weekend meal. It’s personally not the best brunch I’ve had but it’s definitely a great option if you’re in the area. But be warned - because the restaurant is so small, the wait can be very long (1.5 to 2 hours). I recommend you write your name down on the wait list and spend some time grabbing some coffee or a light snack at the bakery across the street to kill time!
As for the food, I got one of their baked eggs as well as the salmon Benedict. I really love salmon so I thought this dish was great. The baked eggs weren’t super flavored so if you want more kick, ask for their hot sauce!
Alyssa 1822
Loved their baked egg dishes. The tomato sauce with the runny eggs and mozzarella = 😌🤌
I've been ruminating over the drink I got as well. It's so good I came back for just that while I was in the neighborhood - Fat Hen Fog: earl grey latte with vanilla lavender syrup 💜
Alex Anselme
Fantastic service, delicious food. And they seem to treat their staff well.
Daniel Udo
Get one of the egg Benedict's. This place is nothing short of amazing. So friggin delicious
Zane Caplansky
Divine. Simply the perfect little neighbourhood brunch spot.
Andre Sidler
Delicious and quaint place. We had brunch on a Sunday morning and we're surprised it wasn't busier. All seating is indoor but they have placed acrylic dividers between tables, the servers wear masks, and when approached the servers will ask you very kindly to put your mask on. We thought this was a great touch. Loved the food, very tasty.
Ravenna Tran
My husband and I have been regulars here ever since we moved to Ballard and thought it was time to write a review. We basically order the same thing every time, but we never get tired of it. Egg bakes, olives, and the french press are our go-to. We love the delicious healthy brunch options. We love the cute space. There is almost always a line but we've figured out the best times to go at this point. It's always worth it. And the staff is always really sweet. They also have really cool tattoos and excellent skincare regimens. I honestly don't know how this place could get anything less than 5 stars. To me, it's just unfair to take down stars for waiting. The space is small and they're popular for a reason.
Carl Allen
Bit pricey but a great example of "you get what you pay for". Delicious, perfectly made crab Benedict and excellent service.
Hannah Aspen
The Hen is my favorite little restaurant in the world. I always recommend it to friends who are visiting Seattle and looking for a yummy brunch spot. The staff are kind and courteous and I've never had a bad meal. The Camicia egg bake with a side of potatoes is my go-to! It's a very small space with limited seating, so there's usually a wait. It's definitely worth it though :) I've found that mid-week early mornings or late afternoons are the quietest.
I know COVID has added so many complications to the restaurant industry, and I'm sure the staff has been working insanely hard to stay open in a high-rent neighborhood. But even the times I've stopped here for takeout or a quick coffee, I've been treated with so much respect and care. Really hope these guys can make it through these next couple of months. We need to support our local businesses however we can, whether it's takeout, gift cards, and/or generous tipping.
Thank you Fat Hen for being such a wonderful Seattle space <3
Jenny Dieng
Camicia, Shakshuka, and Salmon toast. The camicia was my favorite, it had a nice balance of flavors between the ricotta, mozzarella and sauce. Shakshuka was a bit on the salty side. You will likely need to ask for more bread if you’re sharing! Small and cozy restaurant so make reservations ahead of time.
Frank Swiderski
Never disappoints with either the eggs benny or baked eggs. Coffee is great and you can get a bottle of their hot sauce to go. Definitely worth going to. Again and again.
Eric Veal
Loved the fancy tomato sauce options and vibe for Saturday brunch.
Linda Zhang
Adorable little location perfect for brunch! Very popular so don't be surprised at the wait, definitely worth it though! My friend and I each got egg bakes (Camica and Alla Boscaiola) and they were both delicious and filling. The flavours are rich so don't let the size fool you -- you will be full! We also ordered a side of crispy fingerling potatoes to share and could barely finish it all. Great service as well, our waitress was super sweet and friendly.
Leonardo Peralta
This place is a must! The food is amazing and great experience to have. My wife who is a picky eater and was having a hard time with what order finished her whole plate! 10/10!!
Simone Hanson
The space is very limited but the food is so good that now I can understand how busy it can get! I had the Camicia and tasted awesome!
Blaine Le Comte
We went to The Fat Hen on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. When we got there we parked on the street because they don't have parking. First thing we noticed was this is a small restaurant. We went inside and found that the wait was only 5 minutes for a table and I don't think we waited that long. The inside has a very nice feel, almost like a French Bistro. Light and airy. The service was pretty good. They are helpful, give you time to look at the menu and we're not overbearing. The menu is not very big but everything sounded good. We ordered the Crab Benedict and Alla Boscaiola, both were very good. Both dishes we're a good proportions that you can eat it all and not be stuffed. I wish I had taken a picture of the dish but when I got the food it looked so good I jumped right in. This is going to be a place we will go back to and become regulars at.
rod mason
This breakfast and lunch place is a gem. We had an egg bake served in a cast iron pan in a flavorful tomato sauce base along with a side of potatoes, fine pastries and excellent coffee. Service was friendly and prompt. The ambience was cozy.
Get there early and wait a little. Get there later and wait a while.
Tiffany Gregg
The Fat Hen Sandwich and Pancetta Eggs Benedict were delicious! Loved the hollandaise sauce. The lavender lemonade was yummy too! The service was amazing, really nice servers and prompt.
Karli Broglio
Amazing breakfast place. Only kind of "special" breakfast place I know of on the North end of Seattle, but they claim the title well. It's tiny, you will have to wait for a table most times you go, and they should turn the heat up, but the food and coffee are both amazing and worth the wait. Plus, you can put your beverage order in while you wait so they'll bring you coffee before the seat you. Really a special little joint.
Rebekah Escobar
This is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast in Seattle. I always have to warn whomever I'm taking that there will be a wait, but it's always worth it. Order a mocha while you're waiting and the wait won't be as bad.
The staff is incredibly friendly and the food will not disappoint you. It should be on your bucket list if you're visiting. Just make sure you set aside a couple hours and enjoy the ability to slow down for a little bit amidst the busy city.
Ricki Assad
The absolute best brunch in the whole country. Every time my partner and I go, there is always a wait (sometimes 1+ hours long) but ITS WORTH THE WAIT!!! We have become regulars and will never stop going back. Best hollandaise I’ve ever had! I wish I could give The Fat Hen more stars. Also Super queer friendly and is a safe space
Todd Nixley
Food is delicious and the atmosphere is very cute. There is often a bit of a line since it's a small place, but the experience is well worth the wait. The Benedicts are excellent, and the egg bakes are the highlight of the menu. Local bread and coffee round out the menu choices nicely.
Josh Bartley
I have been wanting to eat at The Fat Hen for some time now, but have not wanted to fight the weekend crowds. Finding myself with a free weekday morning, I took the opportunity to stop in.
The atmosphere was cozy, the staff friendly and attentive. Being a dreary weekday morning it was easy to get in, but the restaurant wasn't empty. Our coffee came out quickly as did our food. Between my wife and I we had the pork and mozzarella baked dish, the soup of the day, and a scone. All of these dishes were full of flavor, and left us just the right amount of full.
We were happy with our experience, and if we ever find ourself with a free weekday morning will visit again. I can't say what the wait is like on the weekend, but I'm not one to patiently wait for breakfast. Wait or no wait, The Fat Hen is a must try for Seattle breakfast.
Molly Begg
If you're in Seattle The Fat Hen is an ABSOLUTE must visit. While some brunch menus seem tired or unexciting, there isnt a single item here that isnt completely delicious and there is just enough of a variety. The small size of the place adds to its charm, and the service is always friendly and prompt. I think about the hollandaise ALL THE TIME and I have never ever had better crispy potatoes anywhere. Although I am not local anymore I think about this place and how I would love to eat here very often, and cannot wait to get back!
Eric Pine
Good coffee and highly creative food and drink items on the menu. Prompt and knowledgeable staff made for a great first impression. 5 star visit! Call ahead to reserve a spot.
Max Benas
I don't want to write this review. I don't want you to go to The Fat Hen, because there aren't enough seats, and I need one. I'm COMPELLED to write this review, because 4 stars is a travesty. This is the best breakfast spot in Seattle, and I DEMAND it be recognized as such!!
Seriously though, it is. Now, if you want bacon, eggs and hashbrowns (and sometimes I do), this is not the spot. They have a unique, non-traditional menu and you need to be ready for that. But literally every single thing I've had here (which includes every standard menu option, plus many seasonal specials) has been fantastic. My go-to is the Egg Bake Alla Bascaiola (add basil, please). This is somewhat like an Italian-style shakshouka, with a pair of eggs poached in delicious tomato sauce with mozzarella cheese...the "Alla Bascaiola" version adds sausage and mushrooms to the party. If I want to go all out, I get the Crab Benedict, which is probably the closest thing to a foodgasm I've ever experienced.
The Chicken Sandwich is also phenomenal, and really you can't go wrong with anything here. If there is a seasonal special on the menu, get it. They are delicious, fresh, and inspired every. single. time. Seriously though, don't go. If you get there after 8:30 on the weekend (in non-COVID times) you'll have to wait. And nothing good is ever worth waiting for right? (Looking at you, lazy reviewers who ding this place because you had to sit tight for 30-45 minutes - DRAMATIC EYEROLL).
Mr. Fly
This is my favorite breakfast spot in all of Seattle! I discovered this quaint little gem a year or so ago with a friend. I was blown away by the perfectly cooked eggs Benedict! I quickly realized that the menu items are strikingly similar to Pokemon- I gotta collect 'em all! I've been back many times since, and anytime I have a good friend or relative visit, I make sure to bring them here! On top of the comfortable, calm decor, and the consistently, perfectly cooked eggs, their service is stellar! Linnea is the main star, remembering my name and favorite coffee drink (Latte). I am always greeted with a smile, always treated like family, and always leave happier than when I came in! If you hate DELICIOUS food, fantastic service, and wonderful coffee, then you should absolutely avoid this place! If you're an even moderately sane human being, then stop in, and eat until your hearts content- don't worry, it won't take long :)
Tim
The wait staff were very friendly and did an awesome job. The food was delicious and affordable. One of my new favorite brunch places.
Jamie King
We absolutely love this place. Its cramped so expect a wait(especially on a weekend) and don't come with a large party unless you wanna invite a lot of dirty looks. Portions can be on the smaller side but fear not. Very rich and they use great ingredients so bigger isn't always better. We always get the Ricotta toast and the London Fog is really something on a crisp weekday morning. Highly recommended.
Jonathan Thier
Omg so good. "I don't always do repeat restaurants, but when I do, it's always* the Fat Hen."
The skillets are worth the wait. No matter how long the wait.
*it's one of the few places we continue to return to!
Michael Snyder
Somehow tastes even better than it looks, get one of the benedicts to seal the deal.
Chloe Andersen
Not worth the wait. The food was all good, but inconsistent. The eggs in my Eggs Benedict were poached well, my friend's yolks were closer to hard boiled in consistency. The avocado toast needed salt. And the service was mediocre. We had to ask multiple times for water and condiments. And the water was never refilled. If there's no wait, this place is good. For how long we waited, I was disappointed.
Trina Benson
Fat Hen wins my vote for best Eggs Benedict in Seattle. It is prepared perfectly every time I eat there. The first time I went to Fat Hen I received great service. there was a short wait of 20 minutes. The next few times I went the service was terrible. I actually watched the girl who worked the counter sit down and have breakfast with her friends at a table while the entire restaurant was packed, several people waiting to order and receive their food right in the middle of breakfast service! I couldn't believe my eyes. I would give a five star rating if I was rating only the food. Unfortunately the service is sub par.
Chris Spurlock
There may not be much parking and a half hour wait time comparatively short, but it's definitely worth it. The coffee is pretty good and the other drinks looked tasty but most importantly the food is delicious. I had the chicken sandwich and I sampled the skillet eggs, both of which were very good.
Rafael Davila
Im torn. The food was delicious and combination of flavors was good. But i was charged a 18% tip for a carry out order. I was not told/ made aware of the automatic 18% until right before i paid. That is not a good business practice. In light of that, 3 stars is fair
EDIT- response to the restaurant: 18% gratituity was NOT mentioned when i phone ordered. The "note" on your menu about the 18% was and currently still is in the middle of the menu right above the drinks section in smaller print easily missed. Its not on the front page of the website... Glad its going to the workers though!
Shilen Patel
Great breakfast spot, but they fill up quick! Best London Fog I've ever had. Eggs Benedicts and salmon toast were a highlight
Jesse Halton
There's a reason you always have to wait. Small menu done well. The potatoes are always cooked perfectly and not over seasoned, the lentil salad is a great combination of flavors, the Benedicts are all so delicious as well as the egg bakes but be careful not to burn your tongue! The one niggling complaint I have is the price of the chicken sandwich, but it's still really good.
Stephen Lighthouse
I love The Fat Hen. Best chicken sandwich in the area. The filet is so huge you basically get two free chicken tenders! Everytime I've been in the staff has been consistently kind even through covid. I do not understand people complaining about 18 percent gratuity. If you all haven't noticed yet, times are tough for restuarants. Help them out now so they can be in your neighborhood for years to come.
Hylton Buijs
Tucked away from the hustle and traffic, this small restaurant is incredibly cozy, and inviting. Though it was busy, and a wait was present( (and expected), the staff were attentive and got us in quickly. The food was phenomenal, the egg bakes and eggs benefits were excellent.
matteo visentin
I have been at The Fat Hen a few times for breakfast. The menu is simple but it offers a enough variety to find your plate. We discovered a gem, the hand-made ricotta toast! Coffee as well as service are good.
Sarah J. Daudelin
My husband and I came here for breakfast one morning before flying back home to the East Coast. This is a quaint little cafe which has a large selection of drinks (mimosa and mocha were delish!), a selection of pastries, and a few dishes which focus on eggs. If you like eggs, then this is a good place to come to. If not, then your options are smaller. Our meals were presented in a very cute, yet simple and elegant way for this non-elegant cafe. The decor could be described as hipster style. Very laid back atmosphere. We went as they opened and the place filled up pretty quickly. We had excellent service! We would come back here again if and whenever we return to the the Seattle area. We have no reason to rate this place lower than 5 stars!
alice johnson
This is a treasure for Seattle. Fresh fabulous food, very clean, small & cozy. You must understand most food in America contains bad oils, food sources being trucked across the country, & thousands of added ingredients to the boxes they get it from.
My writing cannot compare to the elegance of this fine lovely spot.
If you find you are waiting in line you’ll also find yourself in good company.
Dave Giancristoforo
Good food! Good service! The atmosphere was fun!
kathryn mussallem
One of my favourite Seattle breakfasts... just thinking about the baked eggs and crusty bread makes my mouth water
Kari Zamora
Everything is great but the eggs alla boscaiola are amazing.
Megan Henderson
They make mimosas the PROPER way. Mostly champagne with a tiny splash of fresh squeezed juice, none of that nonsense with store bought juice overpowering my bubbles.
The food is incredible, just be prepared to wait a long time to get seated. The staff are super friendly and welcoming and never seem annoyed with the business.
Shirley
Overall I really enjoyed this restaurant. Only compliant is the wait time and it was an hour long! The restaurant itself is really small and in a residential area. Parking in the area wasn't an issue but it is very popular, so expect waits. No reservations, just walk in and write your name on a list. There is a park nearby so we went for a walk.
The food was really delicious though! We really enjoyed the food and it was very fresh. Prices were reasonable and service was friendly as well! They did get quiet about an hour before closing, so that may be a good time to go by!
Nicholas H Nowell
Liked it so much we ate breakfast there twice during our first visit to Seattle. Highly recommend one of the Benedicts.
Brittney Geleynse (The Witch Princess)
Delicious food, server was great! They forgot about our drinks while we were waiting...
Rich Phillips
Two words...Chicken sandwich. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is the prices. They couple next to us ordered the Dungeness crab eggs Benedict and it looked amazing. Save your money and give em a try. It's a small venue and parking is a nightmare but still...well worth trying. If I could afford it, I'd be a regular. ALL of the in house baked goods looked amazing and I can personally vouch for the Cardamom rolls. Lunch for two was $55 plus tip.
Bhavani Sundara Raman
The only place I go for shakshukas ever since I found this place!
Kyle B
Food was very delicious, but where they lose two stars is the auto %18 gratuity plus 2.50 per guest for disposable plates and silver wear. Making a simple breakfast over 40 dollars for two. Either auto grad or disposable charge, not both!
sharker
If it's hot outside I would recommend eating elsewhere. The temperature and humidity inside this establishment ruined the meal. The food was good, but hard to enjoy when drenched in sweat. One ceiling fan, one rotating floor fan and no open windows (other than their front door) created a stiflingly hot dining experience that was not enjoyable. The service wasn't stellar, but I've got to commend the staff who somehow managed to stay standing and conscious in the equatorial heat. Might visit again come winter.
R D
Good food friendly staff. ALWAYS a wait, ALWAYS crowded. It's a small shop with maybe 19 seats and it's still tight.
Many of the patrons have a hard time moving along when they're done, forcing the line outside to wait (seemingly ) forever.
Parking is residential, so it's very difficult to find.
Carpool or walk from a distance.
Pay at the counter when your done with your meal. Don't wait for a bill, they do not do it that way.
I'd give it four or five if not for the rude typical patron and limited seating.
Trish Stoner
Absolutely amazing! Definitely recommend. Wait was a little long because it's popular and small but so worth the wait! Camicia is must. The housemade tomato sauce is the best I've ever had. Breakfast potatoes were delicious as was the housemade granola. Our server was so friendly and accommodating too. Loved that he was from Northern California
Richie Godsil
Favorite brunch spot! The wait is usually very long but only because their space is limited and they're very popular with trendy young people and foodies.
They're benedicts are fantastic and they know how to make a cappuccino (which is much harder to find than it should be).
Just get there before 930 or after 130 to be seated right away. During peak hours you could wait up to 90 minutes...
Walli Kay Osborn
One of the best breakfasts in Ballard. My #1 favorite.
nuts and bolts photography
The food was so good. We had the benedict w/ prosciutto, and the hollándose was perfect. Great service. And they texted me when our table was ready.
Hope to go back soon.
Marissa Palacios
One of the best mochas I've had. And it was served at the perfect temperature!
Kassie Leung
This restaurant is very style. It's all-white store. It makes me feel comfortable and warm. In addition, I like eat egg bake. There are 4 kinds of egg bake and many different meal. Each dish is so attractive. I think this is a good place for enjoy your breakfast.
Rachel Rutledge
Fat Hen is a lovely, intimate brunch experience. Delicious and perfectly prepared dishes, pastries and beverages are in offer. The service is attentive, but unobstructive -- it has to be in such a cozy place -- only 25 seats. There is usually a wait, but it is always worth it.
Kristi
I've been wanting to try this place for a long time! So glad I was finally able to make it happen. I am in love with the fried chicken/pimento cheese sandwich. And the coffee, delicious. Would highly recommend.
Osama Hamdan
If you are looking for a unique and amazing breakfast experience, look no further than The Fat Hen. Lots of great options all taste great with a few specials to spice things up. The environment is laid back, the atmosphere is cool and the staff take great care. Wish I only lived closer to go more often.
tadurtot
The options for eggs benedict are interesting! I had the pancetta over potatoes with a salad, and I loved it. The staff was cheerful, and they brought my coffee out to me early while I waited outside for my food to carry out. Thank you!
Christina Warden
Yummy yummy yummy! No more avo toast at the moment, just an FYI. Delicious house made hot sauce too!
Danny M
Food Was Very Good. Definitely Quality Food that doesn't leave you feeling bloated or disgusted to eat anything else. Drinks are good, and the orange juice is the best!! Staff is very friendly and nice. Nice place for breakfast. We did have to wait for a table but it wasn't a long wait.
Sofi T
Popular brunch place for baked eggs. It's tiny so get there early. Often the wait times can be 40 minutes to an hour on weekends. Get your name on the list and hop over across the street to the bakery for a baked good and some coffee while you wait!
James Currie
Visiting from Southern California. First restaurant I went to. Food was tasty, eggs prosciutto Benedict taken to go. Was crowded. Very pricey. 2 eggs, a split (very flat and tough) English muffin and some prosciutto. Came with small salad or potatoes. All in all the portion was small and it was $14 then around $16 after tax but when I swiped my card it charged me $20. Either tax is insanely high or they snuck in a charge for something I didn't buy.
Catherine Darcey
Service was super friendly, the smoked salmon eggs benny was heavenly, and the scone my friend got was amazing! However, the glühwein was overpriced. It was $8 for a small glass from a premade bottle, which costs ~$10 at a store, minorly watered down by being heated with a milk steamer from the espresso machine. So I 100% recommend the food and treats, but I'd suggest to just make your own mulled wine!
Paul Mason
There are two things that make the Fat Hen great: the food and the atmosphere. Specializing in eggs Benedict and the tomato sauce-based skillet, the quality of food is superb. A small retail corner tucked away in a residential neighborhood makes for a quiet, cozy meal.
Mosaab Zaki
Our absolute favorite breakfast place. Their smoked salmon eggs benedicts never EVER disappoint!! Make sure to be placed on the waitlist online before going to avoid longer wait times
Zoë Bill
This place has amazing Benedicts, the egg bakes aren't quite as flavorful though. Be prepared for wait times after 9:30/10am on weekends. It's also quite expensive, but worth it for the quality of food you get.
Anneliese Adams
It's very hard to find these cafes in America which do the coffee/brunch combo well with modern food and espresso. The Fat Hen has fantastic coffee, brilliant brunch. I had the eggs Benedict. Was very impressed with the hollendaise. Good service. We'll be back.
John Nazario
Nice small food joint, everything we had (Pasta a la carbonara, pork sandwich, and eggs in red sauce) was delicious, I should know because I tasted all of them. The waitresses were friendly and the Chef/owner is also very friendly. It really felt good coming here and will come back everytime our son takes us :) .
Alicia Mickes
By far my favorite brunch / breakfast spot. You can't go wrong with anything you get here. I'm a fan of their shandy and the Eggs Benedict with avocado and roasted potatoes. If you want to avoid waiting outside to get in, visit on the weekdays. The weekends are still worth the wait.
Mitren Chinoy
I forget the name, but their egg with tomato and basil in a skillet dish is absolutely amazing. Even the scrambled eggs were perfect, my son gobbled them up! There is a long wait, but that is also because it's a small place and really good.
Fa ye
Ate here awhile back with my bro. A spur of a moment trip, hoping that we would be lucky and avoid the crowd. We were lucky and got seats right away. It's a small store front, but it's got a homey vibe to it. Menu is small and focused and the drinks are made fresh daily. I ordered a bake and my brother the benedict. The bake comes with freshly baked bread. It was delicious!!
Jason R
The food here is spectacular and I rarely will say that. They could use a more modern table waiting system such as a tablet app with texting reminders because we had to wait outside he door for am hour in the cold to not lose our table. But it really was worth it for amazing Benedict with utterly perfect potatoes.
Vinay Reddy
Went on a Sunday at 10am. There was no wait for us (party of 3) and were happy to be seated within 5 minutes.
We shared the levain toast with ricotta for starters and it was good. For mains I had the smoked salmon eggs benedict with fingerling potatoes. The eggs were over-poached and the yolk was somewhat firm. The potatoes felt very dry. The hollandaise and smoked salmon were good. It felt like an average eggs benedict, contrary to what other reviewers here and elsewhere have been saying.
Wallace Hasslinger
An absolutely delightful establishment. It is bar none the best place to take breakfast in the Seattle Area. The Eggs Benedict is meticulously prepared. The kitchen staff's pride in their work is palpable in every dish they serve. I am not being hyperbolic when I say "The Fat Hen" has no competition in Seattle when it comes to breakfast. The quality, taste and ingredients are far superior to those of Portage Bay and breakfast spots of its ilk.
It is an absolute must try. And I bet if you try it once you will become a loyal denizen just like I have.
Edward Im
This place is the absolute best. . . . . . all of the 5/5 reviews are well-deserved. Great service and food, kind of a local must-go-to-hotspot. Everyone loves this place.
Vincent Mar
Food was amazing. The crab/eggs Benedict was on point. Sweet, delicious shrimp and butter tangy hollandaise. The baked eggs are also really warm and comforting, good on a cold day. I forgot the name of the egg bake but it was with sausage and tomato base.
Allie Welsh
The Fat Hen is just fantastic. I love going in here by myself and ordering the biscuit with ricotta and jam, an americano and some kind of benedict. It is small, so expect to wait on the weekend. But it is worth it. The employees are always really sassy and nice.
Kristina Pavlicek
As others have mentioned there is always a long wait but don't let that ruin your experience, this place is 100% worth waiting for!! Hot tip: there are nearby coffee shops you can wait at.
The food and drinks are delicious and the service was incredible! If you don't want to wait you can always get your food to go (except the egg bakes). Next on my list to try is some of the delicious pastries and toast.
Kevin Lin
I would say a must go place for brunch in Seattle! Excellent food and service, although most time requires a bit of a wait time, I would say it’s totally worth it. Been here a few times, and the quality has always been consistently good.
Their food are all pretty good, but my favorites are the Pancetta Eggs Benedicts and the Alla Boscaiola(yes I googled it). The Benedicts also comes with choice of salad or fingerling potatoes, which for the later I have to say, is REALLY, I repeat, REALLY good.
yana yushkina
Absolutely delightful. Impeccable and friendly service, and delicious food (get the skillet a la boscaiola!) We’ll be back.
Anne Kimsey
We usually just stop in for a latte and a pastry. Cardamom twists are a perennial favorite, but they always have something different to pique your interest. The sit down menu is also very good, but not necessarily worth the sometimes hour long wait.
oleg cosiuc
Great service, food was okay, coffee is not good at least to my taste. I don't know how people go there for coffee, but maybe I'm just spoiled with good coffee from where I'm coming from. Cappuccinos are made dry here if you know what I mean. If i knew that in advance, i would not come there for coffee because i don't like it dry. Also, the coffee is bitter.
Gisella Tellys
The area is small so booking in advance is recommended. Great food. Nice coffee. Very cozy place!!!
Darren Fox
The baked eggs truly hit the spot on a chilly morning when you want some comfort food. Also those chocolate chip cookies are incredible! I felt compelled to buy one on my way out and.I'm glad I did.
Bryan Brown
Given the perpetual wait at this joint, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, the experience was fairly disappointing. The camicia tasted ok, but the sauce to egg ratio was way too high and after a few bites of eggs you're just left with a bowl of tomato sauce and a tiny piece of baguette. The Florentine benedict was also palatable but boring for the style (eg. spinach only) and the hollandaise wasn't much to write home about. Top that all off with high prices for the quality and quantity of food received and boom, a perfect recipe for mediocrity.
Jessica Turner
It's a solid brunch place. Veerrrryyyy tiny, only a couple of tables, so the line can be very long. I personally don't think it's worth waiting an hour and a half, would happily wait 20 tho. If you do go, go for the mushroom skillet.
Cameron Jensen
My wife and I walked down to this restaurant for a Sunday breakfast on the recommendation of our Airbnb hosts. We are glad we did. We arrived 10 minutes prior to the restaurant opening and there was already a sizeable crowd waiting. The wait wasn't as bad as we had anticipated considering the crowd and are we glad we didn't leave. The service was good, but wasn't overly personable, but considering how busy the place was, we can easily understand why. We both ordered egg bakes, an in camicia and an in carrozza. Both dishes were excellent! We would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Megan Houle
Great service, super cute inside. The cardamom cappuccino and fat hen chicken sandwich were incredible.
Melody McMillan
Flavorful food, super long and confusing wait. We were told 45min-1 hour wait time, so we took a 13 minute walk. I didn’t want to miss our names being called so we came back waaaaay early. When we got back, our names had been called and we were passed over, which was a little frustrating. This place could probably really benefit from one of those “text you when your table is ready” systems. Other than the wait, delicious müesli with fresh figs and a great egg bake.
Crystal Hite
My favorite Seattle breakfast! Every time we stay in Seattle we make sure to stop in. Worth the wait! Everything we've had here is amazing. But our favorite is the pancetta Benedict.
Kelly Jones
I looooooove this place! It's absolutely my favorite brunch spot in Seattle. I'd come here just for the avocado toast every day if I could, but the Eggs a la Boscaiola and the lentil salad are spectacular too. Unfortunately, the word is out, and there is always, always a wait of half an hour or more. I hope they expand soon!
Noelle
I've had more than one special occasion breakfast here and other than having to wait for a table, it's been a great spot to make memories and eat good food! Lots of parking and in a great neighborhood. Super friendly staff!
Melissa Bradley
One of the best brunch spots in Seattle if you're willing to wait. You can also get the right when they open at 8 am and get seated much quicker. The atmosphere is small and quaint and the staff is very welcoming.
John Pickens
It's small, they don't take reservations, but don't let that stop you. Unique and flavorful dishes that were fantastic to eat. Make sure you try a skillet. Lived up to the hype we had heard.
Claire Jenkins
Great spot for shakshuka or eggs benedict. The coffee is amazing as well. I'm always very happy with the service as well. Their staff is so helpful and nice, and even with the usual long wait, they do a great job.
Nisha Joglekar
Nice cortado. Got the smoked salmon benedict and the egg bake. The egg bake was delicious and is served in a small cast iron skillet. While the benedict was good too, the smoked salmon had a slightly sour taste to it. The egg bake seems to be popular here. This is a small place ; expect a wait during weekends lunchtime.
Austin Groom
Absolutely loved this breakfast spot. The dish I had was top notch, the drinks and coffee were delicious, and the service was exquisite. I will certainly be returning to this fine establishment often.
Scott Thorn
Food is exceptional. However, the restaurant itself is insanely hot. We're talking 90+ degrees. It was so uncomfortable we almost left before getting our entree.
Please do something about the temperature control. I would have given this place an easy 5 stars otherwise. One flimsy fan isn't enough...
Capri Jensen
Good food and service, but it was freezing! Everyone had their jackets on, even the staff. We bright our newborn and I had a hard time enjoying myself as I was worried about the rotation of people letting in the fresh cold air every couple of minutes.
Steve Hunter
Great Food not always the best service but I think that has to do with the fact that the place is tiny and they are the victims of their own success and the staff gets a bit stressed.. Brunch on the weekends can be an hour to an hour and a half wait. Since I am not a person who will wait in line for more than 15 minutes I don't frequent the Hen on wellness.
Stephanie Hodgson
Excellent brunch options! Super tasty eggs benedict. Takes a while to get a table if you're more than 2 people but the service is great and it's well worth the wait.
Melinda Issakov
If you love a good breakfast you’ll love this place. Cosy yet clean and modern restaurant. Busy on weekends but easy to find a table during the week. Try the eggs benedict, they are amazing! Great services and wonderful coffee too.
Song Susie
Cold brew is a must try!
Jesse Poitier
Great aesthetics! The food is always wonderful and so is the service! Reservations are highly recommended as this is a small restaurant. Enjoy!
Alex
The space is quaint and relaxing. The service is as delightful as their baked goods (cookies FTW!) I had the chicken sandwich and it rocked me. The skin was crispy, the chicken was tender, and the whole package reminded me why I love fried chicken.
Meg Landies
Delicious brunch, and you will believe anything is because you will have to wait a looooooong time to get it. It's a European vibe, small one room with tiny tables. Best to go in the summer so if you have a one hour wait for 2 people, you guys can stand in the sun and drink coffee while you wait.
Dk Is
The staff was fantastic and very pleasant. A+ to them!!!
The food was tasty. My only negative take away was the size of the place. I found it to be WAY TOO SMALL! If you are lucky enough to find a time that they are "slow", definitely check it out but it gets really cramped really fast.
Jiyoon K
The food was awesome (egg benedict-florentine) and the staff members were really sweet. I had to wait for 20 min but it didn’t bother me at all after I tasted the food. I’d definitely recommend this place.
Johnny Wang
*** In Short ***
Solid brunch food without the nasty (weekday) wait.
*** In Depth ***
So, we were admittedly a little full already after grabbing some snacks at Honore across the street, but, hey, what else were we supposed to do while we waited 20-30 minutes?! Anyhow, after perusing the menu a bit, we ended up trying their salmon and pancetta eggs benedicts, along with their in carrozza egg bake. I won't bother summarizing each, but, the verdict? They were all quite flavorful, and the eggs, in their various forms, were all cooked just right. With that said, I'd probably opt for an egg bake myself the next time I come here, if not simply because it packs more of a flavor wallop than the former.
***Accessibility Info***
Venue - Some inaccessible high top counters with stool seating by the window, with standard accessible two and four tops in the rest of the restaurant. I recall spacing between tables being a little tight, but don't quote me on that: regardless, nothing that couldn't be dealt with.
Bathroom - Didn't try them.
Warren Rice
Surprisingly high quality items. I sampled the Prosciutto Benedict and the fried chicken sandwich. The yolks on the former were like custard, and the latter had possibly the most tender fried chicken breast I have ever enjoyed!
Tammy Channel
My husband and I shared the crab benedict with potato fingerlings. It was just the right amount of food and the best crab I have ever tasted. Just enough spice to make it interesting. I dont usually choose crab for myself - I was indulging my husband's wishes. Glad I did. I didnt give it 4 stars because the stools are metal and were uncomfortably cold to sit on. I put my coat under me and enjoyed the meal. Friendly and fun service.
Gill Chang
I went during weekday, so there was not wait. Ordered "Egg Bakes - alla boscaiola - two eggs in solea tomato, pork sausage, mushroom, mozzarella" Plus a soy latte.
Latte was just ok, flavor was good but the temperature was close to the lukewarm. Egg bakes cooked just right, running yolk but no running white. The flavor of tomato sauce and the sausages were all very good. Not to sour or salty. Reasonable price and good portion of food.
Interior - clean sleek interior and a bit on cold (white, tiles and metal chairs).
Kathryn Rittweger
Great service. Excellent brunch entrees, coffee, and cocktails. Such a sweet establishment. You must get an Almond Cloud cookie when there!
Laurent LATHIEYRE
Update 5/27/2022: not sure what happened today, charged me for a totally uninteresting avocado toast that I did not eat, smaller plate.
Initial review 2017: Good comfort food.
Dana Prouty
There's often a wait for a table but completely worth it. The baked eggs are delicious and reasonably priced. They serve Evolution orange juice, which is the best.
Farrah Khan
Charming little rustic breakfast place. Fits about 15 people. Good menu selection for a classic, slightly trendy brunch menu option. Great coffee.
Rachel Coffin
Not the most allergy friendly place (have an egg allergy), but I ended up getting a salad and fingerling potatoes and both were delicious. My mocha was superb as well.
Seongjae Lee
Best brunch place in Seattle!
Broden
Fat Hen is amazing! They have an incredible menu, great service and unique ambiance! Food this good is hard to come by, and especially at these prices!
Russ Dermody
This place is incredible. Don't expect a quick in-and-out breakfast experience though. Instead, set aside a morning to truly enjoy the best eggs Benedict in Seattle.
Lynx Armstrong
Such a cool little spot. Unique and delicious food options.
Pretty Pink
Dinning here has always been cozy and intimate. Usually there is a long line, but the quality of the food is consistently fresh and on point! Highly recommend.
Jiaqian Wu
Very high quality food. The best we’ve ever had in great Seattle area.
Jake Millman
Pretty small but that’s what contributes to the atmosphere of the place. The staff were super nice and personable gave me and my Gf a free cookie kinda dope. Food probably overrated but still really good.
Raul Ramos
Quaint little restaurant with delicious food and great atmosphere. Very friendly staff and the service was quick and great portions to all the food. The Fat Hen Chicken Sandwich is one I recommend eating.
Kyle Konrad
Eggs in tomato sauce is tasty but not worth $14 and a 20 minute wait. Also has no good vegan options, which is a bit disappointing.
Chelsea Palmer
The food is good, but the wait is often massive and the service is hit or miss. The baked eggs are super great and worth a try. Be prepared to wait.
Kayla Seamster
Great service, amazing food. Only downside is how small the restaurant is. We never mind waiting because you can get full service coffee before a table opens up!
Rachel Seely
Delicious brunch-- love the baked egg dish and house-made scones. This place is tiny, and does not take reservations. Be prepared for a long wait.
D L
coffee dark , bitter and my fellow people with seemed to enjoy
These crispy reds or whatever the baked potatoe pieces looked like were brittle tasting and quite overdone , what a waste
Eggs Benedict 1/2 of the dish almost perfect, saved a bit there but it was such a simple plate , hardly inspiring to leave 1/2
Meh
Mike
Man, this place makes me wish I lived in Seattle! I was lucky enough to find the Fat Hen during a trip to Seattle and instantly fell in love! The staff was awesome and the food was perfect. This is a must try wether you live here or you're just visiting.
Stephen Kim
I was a bit bummed they were out of avocado but the baked skillet dish was delicious. Their endless drip coffee is a must but the blood orange mimosa was overhyped by others in my opinion.
Stacy Brand
Cluck yeah! Farm fresh food in a cute setting. There can be lines; it's a small place but they offer coffee while waiting and the food and service is top notch.
Ivan Ivanovsky
It’s ok. Not kids friendly.
The benedicts are nothing special, but this is one of the few places in the region that serves them. The place gets crazy busy on weekends, with long wait lines and we only managed to get in when we were there at opening. I would say that its overhyped and is not worth the wait.
Ashley Nichols
Great brunch spot in Ballard specializing in egg bakes. The Fat Hen is a very small cafe though, so often the wait is an hour or longer.
Davis Ng
Really good eggs Benedict! Small cozy place. They serve you like a regular restaurant, but when you're done, you walk up to the counter to pay.
Anders R
I really enjoy this restauraunt and its location. It was very cold inside and a bit crowded. I’d go back, but I’d say they could improve on their menu options especially vegetarian and gluten free options.
Gary H
One of my favorite breakfast restaurants. Everything on the menu is fantastic.
Elliot DeMatteis
Best brunch in Seattle. Please give me the fog recipe, so good I got another one to-go.
t g
My friend introduced me to this place. I'm hooked. Fresh ingredients, excellent coffee and drinks. Plus, Plus if you ask me
Osmani Aristondo
definitely a different welcome breakfast experience..
not much space so make sure to reserve ahead.
Josh Kidd
I'd wait all day to eat here love the food. Small place but well serviced..try to avoid a hot day not the best ventilation. Very friendly environment...after my first time it's a monthly event at least
Julie Soderquist
The food was good, but the menu is very limited and on the pricey side. Seating is also limited. The crispy rosemary breakfast potatoes are wonderful.
유종덕
Comfort place for enjoy brunch
Anny Treat
Best eggs benedict I have ever had!
Garrett King
One of my favorite brunch spots. Small so come patient and ready to wait awhile for a table. Worth the wait in my opinion!
Chris Mattix
Amazing food. I had the Avacado toast and Avacado Eggs Benedict. Outstanding! Small place with limited seating. Expect to wait.
Karen Daniels
OMG the food was heaven! My favorite was the Ricotta Cream Toast or Granola, both made with their home made recipes!!!!! A must stop if you are in the area!!!!♥️
Jim Frey
It's a good place to chill with friends. The food was wonderful and I really enjoyed myself. The service and the ambiance were great. Will certainly be back again.
Jo Anne Mc Kaughan
Way laid back and easy. Several eggs Benedict style breakfasts. Egg bake breakfasts. Fresh squeezed OJ. Excellent hot chocolate.
Robin Turner
I had the eggs with an avocado. It was amazing the avocado was perfect and the sauce was amazing! This is a super cute neighborhood cafe. Would visit again.
Kelly Sandoval
Excellent food, lovely location, friendly staff.
Be aware, there's generally a wait.
Matt Keoshkerian
One of Seattle's top brunch spots. The Smoked Salmon Benedict with Avocado or Eggs in Camicia (baked eggs with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil) are to die for.
Justin Parrish
Great cold brew and an excellent London Fog would recommend, can't wait to get back in for a proper meal.
Jacob DeGraw
Very small place, so they can have a long wait, but if you're not in a rush, their food is excellent. I highly recommend the egg bakes.
Konstantin Golyaev
Be there before 8 am when the place opens to get in quickly. Otherwise be prepared to wait for at least an hour. Food is excellent though, particularly the egg skillets.
Roger Plank
Very good, very small, very tasty. Our surfer was incredible. I had Dungeness crab Benedict and loved it.
Michael
I like to come here for lunch sometimes and order the spaghetti with cream sauce (made with eggs), some kind of cured meat, and black pepper. It's absolutely delicious.
Jeremy Krakosky
Egg Benedict and breakfast skillet were delicious! Friendly staff as well.
Tegan Wallace
Cozy little place with delicious egg bakes and very sweet staff. Went with my 4-year-old son and we both lived the food.
Han Nachtrieb
The food here is superb, and so the 5 star rating. It's worth the wait, but it's a wait. On a weekday the place was full of millenials and gen xers.
Anna Sycz
Delicious eggs Benedict, nice decaf coffee but left the place taking the smell of the restaurant on my clothes - that's what I really don't like.
Ashley Patricio
Great smoked salmon benedict and coffee

Matt Smith
Eggs Benedict are super good! One of the best Hollandaise sauces you'll have!
Jeanna Hammar
Small spot. Great food.
James Allen Smith
Most times you'll have to wait for a table, and when you get your table you might be sharing it with other guests. But don't let this detour you, the food, service and ambiance is fantastic!
Loomis Hamilton
Great food, smaller plates, and the wait can sometimes be an hour+ on the weekends. Worth it as long as it isn't raining
Colt Stewart
Very special, high quality local eatery. Excellent Benedict OJ coffee and Sweet Toast.
Good Weather
Delicious food, nice staff, good space. I'm told quite the line can exist during peak times, so just go during off-peak times and have an amazing time
Adam Follett
Very uncomfortable and small place. They serve room temperature water and need to ask for condiments. Didn't find it charming. Food was good but ultimately not worth it
