DIVE BAR, but seriously in all the best ways. Low key place where the locals hang out, with friendly, chill staff, good drinks that are a good price and a solid kitchen.
A funny story, we were staying in Seattle last month before we went on a cruise. My father-in-law wanted to take us out to a nice dinner, fine dining, but the bistro he took us to was at a hotel and due to low staff, they were only serving people staying in the hotel that night.
He has diabetes and we need to find a place to eat pretty quickly so he could take his medication. I had read about the good burgers at Retro but didn’t know anything else about it. I suggested we go there because it was just a couple blocks away.
When we walked in the door, it was obvious that this was a VERY different ambience than what my father-in-law had been expecting, LOLOLOL.
Basic bar, plain wood tables, maroon walls with old rock posters, a skeleton in a Santa suit…you know, your usual dive bar motif.
At this point everyone was hungry so we decided to stay even though Papa looked a little nervous.
We had the best time! The servers were so nice, there was a cool local beer menu, our food was good - tasty burger, delicious meatloaf sandwich- and I really loved the two shots that I had - the Washington apple and the Rainier cherry!
There were people playing pool in a separate room, and they had table games out so we grabbed Jenga while we were waiting for our food. Turns out, it was naughty truth or dare Jenga and we laughed our heads off playing while we had our dinner. My teens thought it was great, and I can promise you we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere way more than we would have at some snooty hotel bistro. Once he got his food, even my father in law had a good time.
Thank you Retro for an unexpectedly memorable Seattle experience!

I found the Retro Restaurant & Lounge by the corner of Stewart Street and Third Avenue in Seattle, WA. I ordered a cheeseburger Texas style.
The Burger Breakdown...
The Beef: 8-ounce patty was strongly beefy and tasted like a 100% Chuck burger. The fat content was average--about 20%. The burger was juicy, and this was re-enforced by the moist, dense, bun. The burger patty was just firm enough to linger on the palate and hold its own.
The Seasoning: I observed the nice man behind the griddle hit the burgers with a salty blend of seasoning on both sides of the patty as they sizzled away. The seasoning was appropriate to stand up to a thick burger and equally thick "buns."
The Cheese: Tillamook Cheddar...eff yeah! The cheese was a decadent addition by way of texture. It added a creaminess to the firm mouth feel. The iron and saltiness further served to complement the combination of beef and bun.
The Meat To Bun Ratio: This was perfect. The bun paired nicely with the beef patty to deliver a consistent bite throughout the meal.
The Fries: There were none. The burgers came with onion rings. In other words, "all that and a bag of rings" Honestly, who needs fries?
The Toppings: I ordered Texas Style, so extra pickles and extra mustard. Mmm.
Burger Review : If you find yourself by Retro, stop by and enjoy a cheeseburger...you will be happy that you did.

Great bar. Great food (cheeseburger and fries simple yet satisfying) can’t wait to go down the menu and try it all.
AND — Nick the bartender was the best.
So excited to find a new place in a town I’m passing through.

Ordered a burger and fries tonight “to go.” This is a great burger and the fries were amazing. Definitely going to order regularly. Fresh food and good quality ingredients. Highly recommend if you are craving a good burger.

This is hands down the best bar/restaurant in Seattle! If you are in the area I highly suggest you stop in for a Mannys. Or if you need a bite to eat before 8pm, everything is market fresh from pikes place market. It's the best you will find in Seattle for the price, if you're looking for burgers, fries, salad, and/or beer!

The clam chowder was fantastic, quesadia was large and very tasty, and the beer reasonable. The fish burgers were excellent. The restaurant is small and cozy, a smaller version of cheers. Much cheaper, and better than a lot of the restaurants in the area.

Cheap (but good) food and cold beers. Bartenders knew all the regulars, and seems like a great neighborhood place. Club sandwich was tasty, but wish it had a bit more meat on it. Fries are spectacular
