Reviews of Bateau
Ashkan Alkhamisi
I was recommended this restaurant by a friend and it did not disappoint! Right away your eyes go to the chalkboard menu which is equivalent to a “Steak Stock Market” where different cuts of beef are offered until they run out. Such a unique experience and I opted for the NY Strip which did not disappoint. Top that off with an amazing bottle of French wine and you have one of the best wine/steak experiences in Seattle. HIGHLY recommend for an intimate and immersive fine dining experience!

Fantastic food and even better service? I took my brother here for his birthday, and they gave us a little card that said happy birthday. The cuts of steak that are available change everyday. I found the list of available steaks a little overwhelming. I asked my waiter for an 8 ounce fatty steak and she picked out the perfect steak for me. We also got the croquettes, the beef fat brioche, and the aligot. Absolutely loved each of those dishes especially the aligot! Will definitely go back.

First time visiting the restaurant and i love it. Service is excellent, food is delicious and atmosphere is...if you know her other restaurants it is showing her taste (which i like). Only thing confused me is the steak selection. Too many for someone who doesn't eat steak (or meat) often and i have hard time choosing one!

I visit Bateau every time I’m in Seattle: it’s that good. I like their unique formula: you pick the cut(s) you like (or you like to try for the first time) from the extensive list on the the chalkboard. Nice cocktails and great desserts. Sides can be a little too rich especially considering that the steaks are served with finishing butter.
Kenneth Wang
Loved the vibe and helpful service when it came to navigating the extensive steak menu. Nori butter on 182 day dry aged ribeye might be genius.
Only criticism is that judging from the lackluster old fashioned, I’d say the cocktails are probably worth skipping here.

Delicious food, friendly staff and great service.
Reservation required. They have a wide variety of options for different steak cuts, but with limited servings. I would suggest going for an early dinner, to avoid not getting your favourite beef cut, if that’s important to you. Yes, it is expensive but it’s worth the food you get here.
Only street parking available.
As for food:
We ordered Beef Liver Mousse for appetisers. The bread and the dips was delicious - we even got a second serving of the bread because it was really that good.
For main course we had, a 9oz 126 day aged prime tip(with bone marrow butter) and a 6oz 21 day aged tres mers(with lemon and brown butter), with mashed potatoes and nettles.
The Tres mers was delicious with mashed potatoes. My friend did not enjoy the prime tip as much, more of a 3.5/5 taste.
Their cocktails are good and strong. We had an old fashioned and a boulevardier. Both tasted great with the steaks.

Great service.
Many options for different beef cut.
But they only have limited servings for each cut. If you want to have top of picks, you'd definitely get there when they open, as the good cuts go very fast.
One thing that disappoints me was the amount of grease. We ordered a TBone to share. The beef was already perfectly marbled, it seems redundant to offer extra butter on the steak.
The beets salad was soaked in oil and salty. We didn't finish it.

Had the most unique and memorable steak experience with my son last night at Bateau. Whole animals, grass-fed and grass-finished, are consciously raised, butchered and dry aged for no less than 21 days on site. The hand written chalk board listed a mind boggling selection of available cuts and sizes based on the limited number of animals that are butchered each day. Thank goodness our server took the time and patience to help us decipher and suggest some cuts; otherwise, it could have been somewhat daunting. After some careful consideration, we ended up ordering a Ventre (last portion of the night) and a New York. The Ventre, a steak fabricated from the belly of the cow, is rich, fatty and deeply flavoured. The New York, nice and lean with a good amount of marbling, is robust in flavour. Both cuts, butter basted and pan seared to a perfect medium rare were exceptional. The anchovy and bone marrow finishing butters elevated the meats without overpowering them. However, it was not just about the cuts of beef. The starters and sides were not only playing a supporting role but were also the stars of the night. The potato chips with wildflower honey and sesame seemed somewhat unusual but were a perfect compliment, super crispy and addictive. The Chicories, a salad with crispy shank confit, radicchio, apple, fennel, mustard seed, parmesan, apple balsamic was refreshing and masterful. The steak tartare was innovative, visually stunning and one of the best that we had ever tasted. The finely chopped beef, wonderfully seasoned along with fermented kale stems, garlic scapes and lemon juice, was served with a garnish of tapioca crackers, egg yolk and paddlefish caviar. The puffed tapioca crackers added the classic crunch but in a modern, playful way. The roasted mushrooms with toasted garlic, marjoram and soft egg was intensively flavoured. The service was attentive, personable and efficient right from the onset from our server to the supporting cast. Bateau is not your traditional chop house. It is a French food hall where the classic dishes are elevated with modern, innovative twists with sustainability in mind. Bateau is very pricey but worth every penny of your hard earned money. Highly, highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing food and service! Photo 1 is of the 8oz Merlan, and photo 2 is the 9oz 140 day aged New York Strip + frites and aioli. We also had the French Onion Croquettes, which were delicious as well. All the staff who we interacted with were very nice as well and were very helpful when it came to recommending what to get.

The chef personally brought the steak to me with pride. I didn't realize why until I sliced into 2 inch high medium rare perfection. The outside was slightly crispy because of the sizzling anchovy butter and the inside was pink with a red center. They only serve locally raised grass FINISHED steaks here. If you don't know what "finished" means, search online to appreciate the temple to beef they have created here. Only steak purists should be allowed to eat here.

If you want a different type of steak joint. This is it. I live in Chicago where great steak restaurants are two a penny. But they are mostly all the same. Big well known cuts of high quality beef. I went into Bateau, the beef is also very high quality but the cuts that they butcher on premises are unusual (to put it mildly). This is a place you really need to trust the wait staff. My waiter was able to efficiently explain what each piece of meat was on their extensive menu. Just be sure to go early for the largest choice. They have limited amounts of each cut and run out of some cuts quite quickly. If you are like me and love a good piece of meat then this place will not disappoint you.
Katelyn Troastle
This is the restaurant I take my out of town friends and family to. It's definitely not cheap but the food and the service could not be better or more impressive. Personally I love that I can go here and know I will always have great food and amazing service I don't have to worry about anything. I've taken my friends and my extremely high maintenance parents/relatives and they couldn't find fault in anything (truly a rare sight). The burger (off menu) is the best I have ever had in my life as are the fries and french onion croquettes. Book earlier reservations to take full advantage of the menu as it changes daily and quickly one restaurant is packed and expect to spend more then you think.

Awesome steak place. They have a huge list of cuts and they helped me pick one based on what I told them I like about steak.
Josh Parise
I'm not sure which I would be more excited about, winning a mega millions jackpot, or eating dinner here every night for the rest of my life! This place is not only brought my heart joy, but restored my faith that there is a quality steakhouses out there. Coming short of knowing the name of the cow I enjoyed, farm to table is an inept description of how they source such high quality, not only in the front and back of the house staff, but the pure quality they put out. It was wonderful to finally have incredible side dishes at a steakhouse too!!! Consistently a bargain considering the craftsmanship!!!
W Gobert
Everything beef! Hung for 26 days or more, the cow is carved up onsite, into so many grades (see photo). It has modest, crowded tables but sold out.
ian newbury
If you aren't into meat this place really isn't for you! You get to choose your cut of meat which they prepare after you order , it's an experience it's not a fast fix restaurant. The decor and ambience were very nice ,the staff were exemplary and extremely knowledgeable. This is definitely a higher end restaurant but it was a great time.
Bill Wu
Unique steak experience with all cuts dry aged and only what’s available on the blackboard; once it’s crossed off, it’s gone for the day.
Tried 3 different cuts which was nice. Hip cut sirloin was our favorite and Manhattan filet was also good.
Oysters from the sister Bar Melusine was great and cocktail was very good. French croquettes were very unique take on french onion soup. Tartare was tasty but a bit salty.
Service was very on point and attentive.
Leaf Lockwood
Best steak I have ever had at a restaurant. I have eaten at all the steakhouses in Seattle/Eastside and been to multiple in NYC, ATL, Las Vegas, Tampa (including Berns), and Denver.
It is a bit confusing at first as they have a huge selection of different cuts, some I had never heard of before, but the wait staff were extremely helpful.
I will say that it is a touch stressful because they typically only have one or two of each cuts so you see them being marked off in real time as people order. I would highly suggest getting there right when they open for the best selection.
This is NOT a quick experience, but it is absolutely worth it. We spent about 2.5 to 3 hours for dinner on a Monday
Viking Sensation
It was a very fancy place. Good food. did the 5 course tasting and it was ok. I expected more from it for the price. the drinks were good. Best part of the tasting menu as the steak which was amazing. I recommend everyone to get the fries and a steak of their choice! the staff was great though.
Thomas Hillyer
Great for exploring different cuts of steak you've never had before. Very unique experience and the wait staff are knowledgeable and will guide you through the ordering process.
Don't go if you don't like steak/red meat/non-standard menu ordering.
Selene Pena
Celebrated our anniversary here and it was great. I feel like it can cater to different people. The music was interesting. Loved the vibe. And our server was awesome. I can not remember his name sadly. I'm doing this review days later

Amazing French steakhouse, everything tasted incredible. Well worth its inclusion on Tasting Table’s list of Top 20 best steakhouses in America.

Our experience dining at Bateau was one that we will never forget. Right away, we were met with the friendliest staff and our waiter immediately made us feel right at home. Being from out-of-state, we were new to Bateau and enjoyed the thorough explanation of how the menu and restaurant works so that we could have a thorough and informed dining experience. We had a difficult time deciding what to order because we truly wanted to try everything! We decided to enjoy an immersive Bateau experience and ordered the 5-course tasting. This option did not disappoint as we dived into some of the tastiest dishes we have ever encountered in a restaurant. We were tremendously pleased with our experience at Bateau. The philosophy and promotion of quality animal foods is crucial in a world that is quick to find alternatives to animal products to promote ideal health and wellness. Bateau stands as a beacon of how bright the future is in promoting quality human health while also supporting the proper care and use of animals for food. We will definitely be returning to the Seattle area again to visit Bateau.

A bit underwhelming, sadly. The staff and atmosphere are wonderful. Everyone was so nice and knowledgeable, but the steak was a bit bland. I got a filet cut and it was cooked perfectly, but sadly had little to no flavor, and my boyfriends top sirloin was similar. Overall, a bit of a mediocre meal for the high price point.
Dhruv Lamba
Great ambience, super friendly and knowledgeable staff, and clean, uncomplicated menu. Highlights for me were the creamed nettles and pickled things (lacto fermented goodness). The steak was cooked perfectly, and the only reason I stopped short of 5 stars was that it was under seasoned.
Valerie Galluzzi
Excellent steak, wonderful service. We went to celebrate my birthday. I really wanted to celebrate with my husband and (good in restaurants) 13 month old daughter. I know it is unusual to bring such a young child to a restaurant like this but the staff were very kind and accommodating of her. We reserved for 5pm on a Sunday and when we made the reservation they told us that they didn't have high chairs so we brought a booster seat that works with a regular chair. They sat us at the windows where we were out of the way and the baby could entertain herself people watching which was just perfect. We had a wonderful time and the staff were so kind and even helped to cut small pieces of steak for her to enjoy. I really appreciate them being so considerate of us.
We had the 259 day aged New York and 140 day aged sirloin. The server said they have these extremely aged steaks around the holidays as a special treat. The steaks were both extremely good, possibly the best steak I have ever had (can't figure out whether it tops a 90 day salt cave dry aged steak at David Burke's old restaurant in Chicago). After reading other's comments we opted to have the butters on the side. That was the best call, the butters are good but for steaks like that using anything but salt is a waste. The croquette and mashed potatoes appetizers were very good and a big hit with the baby who kept clapping her hands after each yummy bite. She also tried the steaks and went back for more.
Dinner took an hour and a half. We didn't add a dessert because the baby was starting to get fussy. Thank goodness she was wonderful otherwise (we got a lot of surprised looks heading out because people didn't realize there had been a baby there)! Hopefully we will get to stay for dessert next time since we are sure to return!

I went for Saturday dinner when they have the set menu for $125. The food was amazing, my favorite would have to be between the steak and the bread pudding.
Social distance was respected as well with other guest. In addition the windows were open so there was great airflow.

I took my brother here for his birthday and it was amazing. I'm a ribeye fan, but my brother and I split a 19oz New York and I was not disappointed. The bone marrow butter is incredible. Steak was cooked perfect. The oysters were tasty, my brother isn't a fan and still enjoyed them here. The summer squash was delicious. The croquettes are super good. Bread pudding is amazing.

Although some of the flavors and spices were interesting, it seemed confused. Not an option if you don't eat beef. Seating was uncomfortable. Service was good sans snippy hostess. Way overpriced for what it was.
Lou Gavino
A wonderful experience. Cheesy mash potatoes were delicious. The steaks were tasty. Come early if you want the pick of the litter. Many steaks will be 86 by 7pm
Jacob Fischer
The food and service were simply stunning. The staff do an excellent job of working with you to pick just the right cut of steak from what is available that day/time of night along with all the sides, drinks, etc. We ended up with a delicious meal and had a lovely experience from beginning to end.
I'm pleased to see the exceptional level of service and talented staff is consistent across all of Renee Erickson's restaurants. It's a real testament to how well a no-tipping policy can be implemented.
Jordan Bayles
Did the chef's tasting menu, and was definitely blown away. The wine pairings were spot on and interesting, and each dish was prepared well, with good flavors and a wonderful variety of preparations. One of my favorite meals I have had in Seattle, I will definitely be back.
Danelle Baar
This place was amazing but be prepared to spend some money (this has been my most expensive meal to date). I suggest calling and making reservations, even during the week. Ours was for shortly after 8 and there was still a good selection of steaks left, although not the ones we would have ordered if we ate earlier. We decided to split a 22oz ribeye instead of getting 2 smaller and different cuts. Steak was perfectly prepared and perfect portion for splitting. We also ordered buttery mashed potatoes and summer squash and both were delicious. Cocktails were stiff but good. Service was great and seemed to be more of a group effort which felt like we were well taken care of. If you're wanting a special meal or a night to splurge, I recommend trying this place out.
momo
This is one experience I would highly recommend to anyone that can appreciate dry aged steaks. It's an interesting concept as there are only a certain amount of cuts that are offered each day. What they sell, they begin to cross off their chalkboard and their heavy weighted gold plated clipboard. If you're going with a large group, I would highly recommend ordering a variety of cuts. The ribeye at 91 days was amazing along with the bavette and the romp. They were all very tender and flavorful. None of the meats required the butter. The Bone Marrow butter was my all time favorite. The most unforgettable appetizers were the Spot Prawn and Matsutake Mushrooms. Don't forget to order the Frites & Aioli. It's full of flavor, crispy textures and happiness. =)

My second time going to Bateau. First was for the chefs menu which was wonderful, all dishes were using different aspects of the cow to give a very diverse meal. This time was a birthday celebration. Our table split a NY strip and a 70 day aged Ranch cut. Both were perfectly cooked and it was great to compare the two flavor differences. We also got the carpaccio, mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and french onion crochette. The mashed potatoes were okay, the consistency was closer to a soup but all the flavors were out of this world. Highly recommend!
Aila Enos
There’s a wide variety of cuts to chose from, but like people have said its best to go earlier rather than later since they do run out of things. This is also a great place even if you aren’t crazy about steaks, because the burger is awesome! I had that and my partner had a 56-day aged ranch steak with bone marrow butter. The fries were pretty good too.
Julie Nicholls
Bateau never disappoints! Come for the exceptional steaks and well curated wine selections; return again and again because the service is as superlative as the food. They have recently reopened after revamping their spaces and menus for covid, and oh my! The tasting menu is so special!
Nabil Pike
I have been here a number of times and had a great experience each and every time. The decor is simple but comfortable, the staff are knowledgeable and attentive, with great bartenders, and the food is delicious!
They butcher in house, so their selection of cuts s impressive, and it's a great place to find a new, favorite steak cut!
Michael G. Barash
I had been meaning to come here for a while and I am so glad I finally did. Every single dish I had was both extremely delicious and highly creative using unconventional ingredients to great effect. The selection of steaks was superb with many cuts unavailable elsewhere and of course the taste was phenomenal. Top of the quality of the food with excellent service by the very knowledgeable staff and you have the perfect recipe for an amazing evening. Thanks Bateau!
Alexandr Moroz
A true Arcadia for those who appreciate beef in all shapes and forms, Bateau is strict about using every possible part of the beast. There are plenty of steak cuts available, but the real gems are the cuts and parts that don't work for steaks. You can find those of the Chef's tasting menu that runs five courses, all beef-focused (including the dessert). The menu changes daily, depending on the available cuts, and holds a lot of promise.
The dinner started with some steak tartar with egg yolks and potato chips. I found the tartar seasoning a bit off and unbalanced, while the potato chips were way too heavy on the salt. The roast beef with croutons and gribiche sauce that followed was less than ideal as well: the sauce stole the show, and it was hard to appreciate the roast itself. The first of the hot dishes, the rignion fricassee, was seriously good. The kidney was cooked to perfecton and masterfully paired with oregano and honey flavours that didn't try to hide anything; instead, the flavours complemented each other and contributed to a wonderful and sophisticated taste profile. The beef confit with purple cabbage and grapes was good, tender and rich in flavour, with the sourness of cabbage balancing out the heaviness of the confit and marrow. The desert gave me the only reason to complain about the dinner: the churros fried in beef fat simply didn't play well with the coffee ice cream.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience, starting with the friendly and helpful service through the presentation of the dishes on the Chef's menu to the creativity and taste profile of dishes. A definite must-try for carnivores.

Everything we ordered was beyond amazing. The staff was so helpful and had the best recommendations. The food and preparation is so wonderful, but also a big part of what makes the experience so amazing is letting the staff make recommendations and trusting their expertise to guide you through an amazing and delicious night. You'll be able to try and appreciate cuts you wouldn't necessarily order on your own or even know about. It's by far the best meal and experience I've had. Thank you Bateau!
ken buriani
By far the best steak I've had. Such a unique experience especially for a steakhouse. There wasn't a single aspect of my meal I didn't enjoy and everything was perfectly done and presented well. Definitely a bit pricier than most average places, but worth every dollar. You will leave here wishing you could come back regularly. Such a good find, I can't recommend trying it enough. And if you do go, the pickled veggie salad, mashed potatoes and lemon butter on the steaks are honestly must haves. Soooo good.
Justin Anderson
Bottom line first: Novel steakhouse with both classic dishes and atypical cuts that you won't see at your standard steakhouse. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Renee Erickson does it again with this boutique steakhouse that showcases entire cows from select farmers. The menu for the night consists of a chalkboard list of the cuts of meat obtained from that one cow they chose for the night. There will be plenty of cuts you have never heard of before and you will need to rely on your server to navigate you through the list. Our server was more than willing to go through the list more than once and give us an anatomy lesson on beef. To top all this delicious beef off, you can pick from an array of compound butters to slather your piece of beef in.
The restaurant is more than just beef. The menu has plenty of steakhouse classics as well. The frisée salad with bacon lardons and a poached egg was to die for. The sweetbreads were savory, rich, and creamy. The asparagus side was a wonderfully plated twist on creamed asparagus. But better than all these were the beef fat fried French fries. Perfectly twice fried potatoes with the perfect crunch, meaty flavor, and garlic aioli to go with them made you want to die and go to heaven.
Bateau is the PNW's take on a sustainable steak house. Erickson has out done herself with this one. Would definitely recommend this to anyone from the overnight traveler to the everyday Seattle occupant.
Brad Wilson
Fantastic food (definitely try the warm jerky appetizer!), terrific service. Their custom cocktails had nice little twists on classics.
Patrick Fay
The reason this review is three stars is pure price point.
This was an exceptional dinner, and overall I am not dissatisfied with my experience. However, if I'm going to be paying for dinner at over $150 per person, there should not have been as many "misses" in our experience.
Service was top notch. Engaging, but not hovering.
The bread service was on point. One of the better I've experienced in the Seattle area.
The French Onion soup was not very satisfying. It was almost like a cup of demi-glace. Perhaps I just prefer less red wine and less color to my caramelized onions in my French Onion soup? We didn't finish it.
Next up was an Alaskan Spot Prawn creation. It was part green salsa ceviche and part salad. I'm from Alaska and Spot Prawns are some of my favorite things on the planet. I was really excited for this dish. Particularly when it arrived and I saw their creative use of the Spot Prawn roe. It was ok. I couldn't taste the prawns. There was so much going on in the dish, peppers, veggies, citrus that the prawns themselves became indistinguishable to the palate.
The Steak Tartare was amazing. Exceptional. I was expecting to have some classic power, but the chef kept things elegant and graceful. Probably the "cleanest" tartare I've experienced. All flavors easily noted and enjoyed. It was gorgeous, of course. With the most thinly sliced crostini one could get. I was expecting a crostini that thin to disintegrate, but they stood up to copious amounts of tartare heaps. So good!
For our main course we had a NY Strip with Bone Marrow Butter and a Coulotte Steak with Anchovy Butter. NY was exquisite. Pronounced in flavor, complimented by it's strip of fat, and luxuriating in it's compliment of butter. The Coulotte, and this was my first time with this cut, was great in flavor, but difficult in chew. It was too tough for us to appreciate. Apparently not benefiting from it's dry aging process that much? I believe this was a 29 day age, and I'd expect a bit more tenderness.
We had the Frites and Aioli and the Kale Gratin as our sides. My wife could not get enough of the aioli. The gratin was too rich for us.
We finished with a Bread Pudding that was absolutely delicious. One of the best I've ever had. It was swimming in a pool of their own "almond milk". My wife seriously asked me if it would be ok to drink it. Of course! Let's get straws!
All around a great dinner. I'm pleased. But I expected more hits than I received for my dollar.
Charlie Nguyen
Get there about an hour after it opens so you can have more meat choices! The burger reviews are the real deal. It's not on the menu but it is really good. They use the scraps of all the cuts that they have so it's quality and delicious meat. We had a ribeye (w/bone marrow butter) and a Denver steak (with brown butter) and I would have to say the bone marrow steak is extremely good and completely makes the steak. The drinks are a bit pricey. Overall it's a great experience and definitely worth it. There are also alot of variety cuts to choose from (ranging from $20-$150+), so the price is what you make it.

Don't miss this sweet and intimate chop house on capital hill. Gorgeous and melt in your mouth aged beef from area ranches. Knowledgeable and kind servers. In fact, just let them know what you're in the mood for and they will pick out the perfect cut for you. Have a meal here, you won't regret it!
Brittany Towers
One of the best steaks I have ever had. This place is truly unique in that they butcher and age in house and they only have certain cuts and amounts per day. Come early If there is really something you want. Expensive but definitely worth it. Pro tip - get the French fries. They are friend in beef fat and of course amazing.
Steve T
Fantastic steakhouse! The filet was super soft and superb. The mashed potatoes were silky and buttery. All the dishes were good and the service was excellent.
I’ll definitely return, this is my new favorite steak restaurant!
Devika Locke
The ambiance and seating area is lovely. Our waitress was excellent at explaining the menu and helping us pick our food. Overall however the food was not awe inspiring. The meat was well cooked but standard in flavor. The frites we're simply frech fries, not as thin and crispy as I would want. The aspragus side was beyond delicious and worth the trip. For an app we had the carpaccio, where the meat was excellent and the falalfel was good, however the combination was less than pleasing. This would be a nice place for a date or other semi formal event, but for me the food left much to be desired.
Emily Hemenway
I didn't know what exactly I expected, but this place was so great. The staff is superb, the ambiance is lovely, and the food is very, very good. We got the tritip with the mashed potatoes. I highly recommend both. We got the bread pudding for dessert with the Madeira pairing and that was fantastic as well. I would go back in a heartbeat.
Erin Ogden Green
Prepare to spend. That said, their beef is marvelous. Lots of rare cuts and interesting butters to compare. Their pickle plate was a delight. Side dishes are too expensive; $12 for mashed potatoes? Tallow dessert cake is a marvel.
Chris M
Food was fantastic both times I’ve visited. Each time we’ve had the tasting menu with drink pairing. Steak options off the chalk board are amazing too!
Ryan Curtis
On a tip from a bartender at Teku Tavern we decided to check out Bateau. He had suggested to sit at the bar and order the hidden menu burger. Without the slightest bit of exaggeration, this was without a doubt the best burger I've ever eaten. Maybe just simply the best thing I've ever eaten. Their fries and kale salad were also great, and our bartender made fantastic cocktails. Definitely worth checking out!
Jose
Amazing menu offering different meat cuts from local farms. We had rib eye and sirloin, loved both. Perfect medium-rare. Excellent service that gave us great recommendations. Taking 1 star out because sides were rather small and unremarkable, but meat is the king here.
Rosemarie
My boyfriend and I went here last night, and it was one of the best meal experiences we've had. The staff was all kind and our waitress was amazing at recommending wine/cocktail pairings with the courses. She was also really helpful in Steak recommendations for us.
Each course was wonderful and the meat was fantastic. Towards the end our waitress told us the kitchen staff forgot to put in our steak orders, and we could still order them but it would be a 30 min wait. We didn't mind, but decided to opt out on the wait since we wanted to be home by midnight. Not only did our waitress apologize, but she comped all of our drinks, offered us each another, and waived an additional $20.00 off our meal, which was so much more than we anticipated.
We'll definitely be coming back, probably March or so to see if they have a new spring menu with different drink varieties.
Also the staff is very inclusive, and the atmosphere to the restaurant and bar was calming, nicely done and very individualistic.
Dan Dale
Leisurely dining with a focus on beef. Staff was caring and knowledgeable. Starters and sides were plentiful and delicious. You will not be disappointed.
Branden Butler
Fantastic fine dining. Dry aged steaks. French cuisine. Modern takes on classic dishes.
Shae Hurst
My photos do not do this place justice!
The steak is hands down amazing. It comes perfectly cooked, and the bone marrow butter is amazing on top. I highly recommend over more traditional steak houses (Ruths Chris, Daniel's Broiler etc.). Picking out your cut of meat off the white board is fun, and the staff is of course very knowledgeable about the meat as well as the wine.
Jamie Buckley
Food was great and the servers were super nice and informative. It’s not cheap but the food was worth it.

An excellent pairing of French style cuisine and Pacific Northwest farm-to-table ingredient sourcing. Bateau's juxtaposition of an upscale interior with a window view of their hanging cow carcasses is a perfect metaphor for the cuisine which elegantly combines the unrefined natural ingredients with the highly refined cooking style to create something truly special.
Soumeya B.
Foraged berries, onion ash, beef belly, lemon cream, fried curry leaves and vaudvon are just a few of the ingredients that wowed us. The Tasting menu gets 5 stars for innovation, quality and freshness. The service was phenomenal, Serena made sure that I only got dishes that I loved and she did it with a smile, sincerity and good conversation.

Bateau specializes in butchering the whole animal in-house and utilizing every part so you’ll find some unusual cuts of beef here but all are delicious. It’s a bit pricey but well worth it the splurge.
John Schneider
Really pretty good. For the steak, you pick the farm, cut, size, and age that you want from a blackboard on the wall. Service is the type where they add in an auto 20%, which means you have multiple people serving you. You kinda have to like buttery steak.
Tyler Robinson
Enjoyed the 28 day aged ribeye quite a bit as would be expected based on the price which is heavy. Mushrooms on the side were a nice compliment as are the natural wines offered by the glass.
Andre Sidler
Without a doubt the best meal I've had. Did I pay for it, through the nose, but yum! 🤤
Jane Lu
Great food! I had the tasting menu for a date and it was so incredible and you eat til you're about to explode. Downside is it's a bit pricey :(
Ray Whitmore
Best tasting steak ever. Awesome service and our server extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Definitely a must visit.
Alexandre Guertin
Great dining experience doing the tasting menu with the wine/cocktail pairings. The service was great and would definitely go back next time I'm in Seattle.
Brett Ettinger
They do beef, cooked very well, but also generally cooked medium rare. Sides are served for the table and seem to rotate regularly. Wine list is good too. Nice special occasion meal.
Charissa Corder
This was a very special dinner for 4 of us all turning 50, 60, 70, and 80 this year. Bateau didn't disappoint for our dinner of the decade.
Nicolina Berger
Bateau is incredible.
Arrived soaking-wet and 20 minutes late for our reservation, but the host graciously sat us and was so kind. Our excellent server recommended certain cuts of steak and a few dishes, and everything was beyond delicious (as were the delicate-yet-strong cocktails)!
I'd walked by Bateau in the daytime and immediately added a star on Google Maps to remind myself to go there. It's an unbelievably beautiful restaurant. Super romantic, lovely decor, and cozy despite the chilly Seattle night!
This is definitely where I'm going to bring friends when they visit Seattle!

Had the absolute pleasure of being served by Shelby last night. At first, we were very intimidated by the menu options and although we knew what types of steak we liked, wanted to be a bit more adventurous. Shelby was kind, personable, and made all those worries go away with an incredible explanation and recommendations of what steak we should order: he did not disappoint, and the food was fantastic.
On top of being an invaluable resource when navigating the labyrinth of steaks, he was incredibly passionate about the experience that he provided. Thank you for a great meal and great service!
Ibrahim Mimou
3.5 because portions for sides were tiny and there are no proper appetizers or sides on the menu to pair with your meat, which you will be craving as you wait an hour for your steak. Biggest upset is the lack of Cesar salad or any salad that is on the menu. Pickled fruit for an appetizer where the best bite was the pickled walnuts as they tasted most like olives…. the mushrooms were absolutely delicious but then the mashed potatoes were good but very basic and the bowl served was filled only half way ( which wouldn’t usually need to be mentioned expect that the server advised against ordering two bowls for the table as he said it would be ample) Now the steak was great, I would ask for a description of their cooking levels before determining how you’d like your meat cooked however with all the different cuts they have on menu I think you will be pleased. And to top it all off every cut is dry aged and served with a light butter on top

Bateau is hands down the only spot in Seattle to go to for steak. The cows are raised locally at the restaurant’s farm on Whidbey island. They age all their own beef in house. The servers are incredibly knowledgeable about every cut listed, and their attentive service is certainly the icing on the cake. Be sure to get an early evening reservation as each night they have a fresh chalkboard list of cuts available. If you arrive early you get the best selection. Another fantastic establishment to be added to Renee Erickson’s repertoire. I will continue to go back again and again.
Zakkry Endicott
Delicious appetizers and beef. Nice long dining experience. I was very full by the end. I am so glad that I had the good fortune of eating here for my friend birthday and I will continue to recommend this restaurant to all. Meals of all sizes are possible here with the flexible menu.
Jeremy Peronto
Beautiful nose-to-tail steakhouse with some of the best dry aged steaks around. I was also super impressed by the roasted mushrooms. There were a number of cuts I was unfamiliar with, and the staff was really helpful in navigating the menu.
Co
Amazing. I felt like the waitstaff’s knowledge of the different cuts was on par with butchers. They answered all my questions and recommended cuts based on my tastes (Denver and some sirloin cut). Mushroom sides was a great mix of a several types. Tartare was also not straightforward with complex flavors.
Adaira McCrummen
Atmosphere and food were equally exceptional. We had the 5 course tasting meal. It was expertly made and curated. The wine pairings were incredible.
Best yet were the staff. They were warm, inviting, and deeply knowledgeable.
We can't wait to eat there again.
Matt Hoadley
So I had higher expectations for this place than what was actually provided. Don't get me wrong, the meal wasn't bad. It just wasn't worth the price of what I paid. I recommend NOT getting the "chefs tasting experience". It seemed more like and afterthought than an experience in itself. The first course was the steak tare tare which was amazing and set a strong note for the rest of the meal but each dish just fell under par. The experience was $125 a person and with a magnificent wine pairing was $45 a person. Would've seemed worth it if the $125 included the wine pairing. Reccomend just choosing your own appetizer and cut of steak along with your own wine of choosing.
rohit vachher
Bateau is fantastic. From the starters to the main course and their cocktails, absolutely perfect!!
Sarah C
Cute way of ordering your cut and got really good quality steak, with French touch on everything. Definitely come back for the tasting menu!
David Schertzl
Very different dining experience. All food was excellent. Maybe I didn't ask the right questions because I wasn't 100% familiar with every cut of meat but when asked about tenderness of a certain cut they were too far off for a better rating.
Imogen Caroline Brendel MPP PMP
Excellent restaurant. The food is spectacular, the service friendly and efficient, and the interior elegant and true to form as a butcher/restaurant. It’s a gourmet carnivore’s true heaven!
Ly Vu
Wonderful service, fantastic ambience, and the selection of steak cuts is vast. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and is more than happy to share in order to create one of the most flavorful dining experiences you'll ever have. Absolutely going back for more!!!
Marc Chamness
I like food. I'm a burger, fried everything, simple food kind of guy. Bateau is not that. My wife and I stopped here for our anniversary dinner last night, and everything was amazing. I enjoyed several cocktails that were mind-blowing, and we both elected to do the 5 course meal.
Pricey, but wow. The chef came to table-side with each course, and the knowledge shared by all the staff we met was outstanding.
The 5 course meal will be a special occasion but in the future, but was totally worth it.
K T
Was seated by the door and told to wait for seating but ended up forgotten for some time. However, service after being seated was fantastic. But unfortunately the food didn't get even close to the mark considering the price point. The steak was fantastic. But the salad, mushrooms, and side of potatoes were all overly salted. I had the steak tartare with my chef's course and the tartare itself was delicious, but the accompanying buckwheat crackers were extremely salty. The taste of the tartare was completely overshadowed by a level of saltiness that could compete with the black sea. I ended up eating the tartare alone and ate the crackers separately later. If I didn't care about not wasting food I wouldn't have even touched the crackers.
Ramsey Khadder
You're paying for the experience of ordering limited cut steaks off a chalkboard. The preparation of the steak was underwhelming. Finishing a butter basted steak with a flavored butter spread results in an unbalanced, overly rich bite of steak. I'd highly recommend their oysters and tomato appetizer - easily the best parts of my meal.
Daniel Garatea
Excellent food, and incredible steaks. Get there early to have the widest variety of cuts available. Especially the choice cuts of rib-eyes and NY strip.
Alana Strassfield
So, the steaks themselves were good, but I felt like they were overpowered with butter. Also, the experience at the restaurant is unnecessarily long - it was 45 minutes after our reservation that we finally ordered. It would have been nice to have been told beforehand about the change in mask policy as well. The greeter seemed a little rude and annoyed that they had to take time to explain things to us, and they totally could have let us know when they called to confirm the reservation that we would need to wear masks during ordering, in the door, etc.
steve knapp
We had a wonderful experience. The steaks were flawlessly cooked. Kudos to the chef for perfectly timing temp and resting. My only gripe is the mashed potatoes. They seemed a little plain as far as presentation. They were a little soupy and could have used a garnish for decoration. The kale salad was great and large but would have preferred a few more options on the salads and sides menu. Keep up the great work.
A. Varyu
This place looks amazing and I’ve never eaten there but pretty sure looking at pictures of the menu is making me fat.
Ian Pradhan
I love the concept of this restaurant, a farm to table, locally sourced, eco-concious steak house. My girlfriend and I ordered the tasting menus, and we're quite satisfied with that decision. Each course was super tasty, we were particularly fond of the tartare.
In addition to the tasting menu we ordered the Billy's tomatoes from the a la carte menu, and that had to have been the star of the meal. We loved the fresh, in season tomatoes with the crispy confeit beef.
One slight reservation that we had from the meal was that we wished we had received an explanation for each dish we received as well as the wines that were paired with them. Some of the courses came with good explanations, while others had little to no description. Overall a great experience and we liked what we ate, we would be happy to come back in the future.
Julie M Berry
I ordered food to make at home and had the best experience when I was picking it up. I drove around the block a few times and could not find parking. After 10 or so minutes I called and the lovely staff were willing to meet me outside with my food while I quickly double parked. It was truly heart warming and saved me so much stress. I had a blast making the burgers at home, the instructions were right on and easy to follow. We paired them with some frites and a bottle of wine. Overall would recommend. I do miss dining in their restaurant but am so thankful for these innovative ways to still enjoy the food.
Margo Ackman
First visit since covid. Very nice, but they are definitely still settling into the new normal. The service was stellar, as always. We came for a birthday, and they left a note on the table & brought a candle with dessert which was a nice touch.
The cocktails were all lovely, including several off menu black Manhattans. The croquette appetizers used to be a favorite, this round the beef garum sauce was really really, make your tongue tingle, level salty. (This coming from an absolute salt addict). I missed having a light veggie on the menu to balance all the fatty, beefy, potato deliciousness.
The steaks were tasty as always. There were a few "house cuts" with unique names that the chef had created. The staff were not entirely sure what they were or how to describe them. We ordered 2 anyway, since we like to try new things and figured it would all be delicious. They were in fact super tasty. Only negative, the butters. We always used to get the marrow butter, and did this time as well. I don't remember it being so herb heavy. It tasted like bernaisse sauce with lots of tarragon. While tasty, it made all 3 of the steaks taste the exact same. We just need to order it on the side, or without the butters to actually appreciate the beef.
Also, be sure to order a doneness level just above where you want. They have always cooked very much on the rare side. I am flexible but prefer medium rare. We ordered medium just to be safe. This time even medium was fully rare on one of the steaks. We joked about one being almost "blue". But still tasty!
All that said, we will be back soon !
Nora Molasky
The experience here is so unique. I loved the butcher board ordering style and the steaks were cooked perfectly. Definitely would recommend the creamed nettles- such a unique side dish.
Justin Harned
Phenomenal steaks, amazing service, and the wine list was fantastic. We are visiting from Denver and this place blew away our expectations. It was such a great experience. Thank you!
Nate H
We'd been to Bateau before for special events and finally tried it for a regular dinner service. Really great experience overall. Having the options different cuts of meat from different farms is really nice, and our table really enjoyed all the different sides as well. Service was great and pacing of the meal was nice. The wine list is not huge but super thoughtful, and nice to have a very french centric list. My only complaint is some of the steaks get quite pricey so that may stage-gate how often you can come here, but as a special occasion its a really nice treat.
Kahealani
Wonderful atmosphere. Came here for our 2 year wedding anniversary and will definitely be returning. Their drinks are perfectly made, we had whiskey sours, old fashions, and ciders. For appetizers we had beef tar tar, which was absolutely delicious, and french onion croquettes, definitely one of the best parts of the meal. For dinner I ordered a 22 oz rib eye sirloin which was absolutely amazing; delicious flavors and perfectly tender. Also, I ate about 25% of it and took it home to enjoy the next day as well. My husband ordered the Jacob's ladder and it was perfectly sliced and melted in our mouths. My only complaint is that the waitress told the table next to us that she was leaving but did not talk to us about it before she disappeared. Overall, this was a very positive experience.
Ps. Gratuity is included in the bill.
Cœur Atypique
The food was so tasty, you can definitely see that they worked a lot on the flavours. I'm French and they say that's a french restaurant, I cannot say that what I ate was French but the work they put in their presentation, so beautiful, and in their flavours is a real French thing. Being tasty. I'm definitely a big fan of that restaurant. I recommend the brown butter on the meat !! So delicious. And the wine's list is really good. You have the choice.
Matt Mead
Not exactly good for the wallet if you're tempted to ignore price for flavor. This spot has such an incredible variety of selections all written down for your consumption on a giant chalkboard of goodness. Some of the best steak I've had in Seattle for such a quiet little spot. Service was impeccable and friendly. Definitely will be back for more
Scott Puntenney
A unique and special take on steak. Felt very comfortable and plenty of flavor. Pretty wide variety of price ranges as well.
Rick Schupp
Wow! Amazing dinner - steaks were incredible and paired well with a delicious wine. We had sides as.our appetizers since it takes a good 45 minutes to prepare the steaks. Everything was incredible. Everything was very expensive. We couldn't do this all the time but really, really enjoyed it.
Benjamin
I am really happy with this place. Seriously, this is maybe the best chophouse burger I've ever had. And a strong tie for the BEST fries I've had. Service was great, knowledgeable, and the prices reasonable.. I have no complaints whatsoever. Although I didn't have any wine, the list was well curated, and the choices suit the menu well. The menu itself is extensive, and impressive. I'd say daunting, but I eavesdropped a staff member describing the cuts, impressed with them as well.
Chris Koehncke
Wanted to like more than I did. Good service, small menu, heaps of meat choices. Bit exhausting to order ("what kind of meat do you like?"). Expensive I think for what it is. Steak was perfectly cooked however and well seasoned (+++). The side mushrooms were excellent and good quantity. Signature 'frites' were nothing special.
Thomas Gardner
This place goes in the “TREAT YO SELF” category. I was fascinated with the floors in the bar area, parquet pattern tile with perfect distressed/classic look with an emerald city color scheme. The staff don’t make you feel like a pleb for being unfamiliar with the fancy cuisine and will drop you a helpful hint if you seem lost on a dish. DELICIOUS food. Overall delightful.
Joshua Brager
This is a great place to get a steak. The service is top notch. The food is even better. The restaurant butchers and ages the beef in house. The cuts of beef are identified nightly. The beef comes from mostly Pacific Northwest farms. All beef is organic and grass fed. Prepared to your liking. I recommend speaking with your server to find the optimum cut for how you like your steak prepared. The shrub is a delicious non-alcoholic beverage. The steak tar-tar is stupendous and full of flavor. If you are looking for a great steak this place cannot be beat. Cuts are limited each night and they are crossed off the board as they are ordered. Don't come to late or you may be left with limited choices.
Jim Dugger
As others have said, I found the food to be interesting, high-quality, well served.
Service and experience are superb. The bar has a diverse and unique selection, and the cocktails are perfectly executed. The sides are unique -- more adventurous eaters will enjoy them more than those with a more selective and traditional palette.
Know what you are getting when it comes to the steaks, however: these are locally sourced, grass fed and finished. So, they are not the same quality (prime, prime++, etc) you might expect in a traditional steak house at this price point. You will pay a considerable price (my 22oz Ribeye was $180) for each cut, and while I found mine delicious though a bit chewy, I expect to have a much more marbled, much more buttery and flavorful, and massively more tender steak such as an American Wagyu at this price point.
Entirely my fault for not looking at what they served before going -- my dislikes are just the nature of grass fed product -- so make sure you do and understand what you are buying.
Yumi Choe
Interesting concept of serving cuts of beef normally not offered at restaurants, but can't help thinking it's a way to serve steeply overpriced cheap cuts. Steak selection is hard to see depending on where you sit and they may not have the cut of beef you may want that day because they only have a set portion of each cut available. However, steak is cooked very well though could use more seasoning or sauce. The secret burger is pretty good, but note there aren't any lettuce or tomato if you prefer a style with fresh veggies.
Rachel Dekman
Bateau is incredible. It's been a few days since I've enjoyed their food and I still cannot get over it. The steaks are made perfectly. You can clearly taste the freshness of the meat and it being local just makes it all the better. The chef is truly a master. The waitstaff is very knowledgeable and absolutely the kindest people. I cannot say anymore except you will not regret dinning at Bateau!
Oktavianus Ludiro
Went for the prefix menu, and it was not disappoint, I felt that I didn't get the true flavour of the beef from the prefix menu. It was a great courses but seems like the seasoning is enhancing the flavour quite a bit and masking their great beef selection. Next time I am there I will just order the exotict cut selection from the blackboard and get the real beef experience from their steaks.
Keith Dahlenburg
Chef's tasting menu. Wow a great surprise with each course.
Cristina Tate
Nothing can replace being a the restaurant itself but the quality of the food and packaging was great. We ordered the big bone ribeye for two and that was amazing! Perfectly cooked and great quality and flavor as always!

4/21/19: My partner and I had a really great dining experience. Thanks to Tom and Mario for taking care of us. We had originally decided to get some starters and split the off menu burger. A conversation started with Tom and suddenly our plan shifted. He made some suggestions and we knew we had to go with it. We ordered the smoked hearts starter as well as the beef fat brioche. Our steaks were the Ventre and Velvet with a side of the mushrooms. Perfectly prepared according to chef's choice. We look forward to going again and would highly recommend this place to anyone who has an appreciation for various cuts of beef.
Theodore Hellmann
Get the chef’s tasting menu with drinks pairing and never look back. I have done this twice now and still catch myself thinking from time to time about how delicious the dishes were.
This is one of the top five restaurants I have ever been to. The price is on the high side but it’s totally worth it for special occasions. I would highly recommend Bateau for a date night.
The staff are also excellent - very knowledgeable about the food and how it is prepared and excited to tell you about it.
Jill Kinison
We celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary here tonight, with the 5 course tasting menu. Everything was delicious. Our servers never let our drinks empty. Everything was clean and their covid protocols were respectful and felt safe. Would absolutely return.
Jill Ga
How Dare They! So I'm trying to enjoy my delectable and impossibly fresh serving of steak but their pantsuited fascist manager keeps making sure everyone is safe by enforcing the mask mandate. And I'm trying to enjoy my yummy craft cocktail but that same pantsuited fascist manager keeps kindly yet firmly standing up for her staff while they are being abused by entitled customers. I mean, how dare they ruin one person's dining experience by making sure every staff member and customer are safe. I want my reuben appetizer with a side of TheCustomerIsAlwaysRight so I can enjoy the best damn reuben in all of Seattle. Fascists.
Toby Rumans
One of the most amazing steaks I've had in Seattle. We had the pleasure of sitting next to the butcher who was kind and entertaining, he also gave fantastic recommendations. The food is incredible, their drinks are creative yet classic, and deserts are perfect for folks who don't like overly sweet things. My new favorite spot in Seattle!
Brian Donhauser
I had the $90 filet. My friend had the $100 ribeye. Both were good. But neither cut seemed to justify its price. Sides were great. Beef tartare appetizer was the most notable among the beef fat fries, mashed potatoes, and salad. The interior felt closer to a tea house than a steak house. Nicely designed, I just prefer steak places that feel like steak places. Service was great. Everyone was really knowledgeable and bought into what they were serving.
Sharon Blackford
Absolutely superb steak and burgers. It is so impressive that equal attention is paid to the side dishes and bread; the cauliflower is magical and the bread is so fluffy and melts in your mouth. Staff is warm and helpful but not intrusive. Really top notch.
Eamonn Monaghan
I am absolutely thrilled with my experience last night at Bateau. Both the service and the food we're exceptional. Every dish was extremely delicious and the steak in particular was amazing. Nick, and Taylor who took care of us helped us make educated choices without feeling intimidated by the menu. I wish there was a 6th star to give!!
Julia Wiss
Great meat. Fantastic service. Lovely atmosphere.
Diana Hu
Another Renee Erickson hit. Highly recommend getting a reservation for as early as possible. We went at 8:45 and definitely felt the missing options of highly marbled steaks. Would very much recommend the veal sweetbread, and staying for dessert! The deserts all have some kind of savory or liquor flair to them (pea and pernot sorbet, tallow cake, etc). The steak was great, a 20 oz rib eye Chuck endcap to share- chunks of fatty areas, cooked to a perfect medium rare. The waiter we had was also amazing. She had a boot on one of her feet, and was so helpful and friendly. Highly recommend this place!
Eugene Hu
Selection is amazing. No steaks under 21 day dry aged. Quality and atmosphere is as expected for food of this level. I had a filet that was pre-sliced for two with marrow butter, an incredible mushroom side and some pickles in lieu of a salad.
Patti T.
Amazing service and steak selections. Most of the cuts, I have never heard of before. We had Jacob's Ladder and Underblade. We choose the anchovy butter for the 1st steak and bone marrow butter for the 2nd, as suggested by our waiter. They also had some very unique and tasty starters and sides. I don't think you can go wrong with any selection on the menu. Just plan on coming hungry and being surprised.
Eve Gutierrez
I totally love the food here and the service is out of this world good. I recommend trying them out if you want something amazing to eat.
John Kim
Best burger in the world. Every bite keeps you engaged. The ingredients are simple but the flavor is complex. The challa bread is fresh and perfectly textured. The meat is superb. It melts in your mouth. I am pretty sure it's a lot of short ribs. The aiole and grilled onions are a perfect complement to the meat and bread. The fries are so crispy and so satisfying. It really makes a difference that they are made with beef lard
Deana Jirak
Amazing. One of the best meals you'll have in Seattle.
Gary Cohen
Ridiculously good food. We got to try some cuts we've never eaten before, too -- and the server was very knowledgeable about the steaks.
Andrew Lee
The dinner I had at Bateau was one of the best meals I have experienced. I visited on a Saturday with a reservation at 5pm. The service including the maître d’ and waitstaff were all friendly and knowledgeable. All were happy to explain what Bateau was all about as a restaurant and explain any cuts of meat. The restaurant brings to mind a French bistro and countryside house with rustic style chairs and chalkboard. It also includes touches that feel very much like a Renee Erickson restaurant with brass and stone with big windows to let in a lot of light and contemporary light fixtures. As for the food, I shared a beet and tomato shrub soda that was savory and refreshing. The meal started off with a parmesan amuse-bouche that was airy and cheesy. The steak tartare came out next with fresh meat balanced with mustard seeds eaten with beef fat crackers that melted in your mouth. After that there was a lull in food because the 7oz petite sirloin and burger were being cooked. They were well worth the wait. The steak was tender due to the cooking process and the fact that it was aged 28 days. We ordered anchovy butter to go along with it that added an interesting dimension to the steak, but the butter wasn’t necessary. The frites came out as well and they were nicely fried and could have been eaten happily without any condiments. The garlic aioli was excellent as well as the brown aioli. The brown aioli was thick and had hints of Worcestershire, soy sauce and sweetness that paired well with the frites. All this being said, the best part of the meal was far and away the burger. It’s not a menu item, but it’s somewhat of an open secret. This is the best burger I have ever eaten. I believe the burger patty is cooked and then rests and then is cooked again and rests. The char on the patty was perfect and was cooked medium rare perfectly. A heap of dark brown caramelized onions were on top and mixed with the aioli and the juice of the patty combining richness, umami, and sweetness to great effect. To finish the meal they provided peppermint meringue mints with flecks of chocolate. Taking the ambiance, service, and food into account, it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Thanks to Renee Erickson and her staff. I will be back.
Grant Gonyer
Hands down, without a doubt, the most astoundingly delicious steak I have her eaten. The menu items reflect the creativity and care that the restaurant puts into all their decisions. It's a pricy trip, but one that I believe to be so well worth it.
Alex
Wow, this food. Best steak. Simple and great quality menu.
Aloof, cat-like servers with egos about to burst from self inflation. Kinda wrecks the experience.
Colin Fitzgerald
This is probably my favorite restaurant in Seattle, its become a tradition for my wife and I to go here on my birthday and I cannot overstate how great this place is.
I love steak but hate traditional stuffy steakhouses. This place turns that paradigm on its head. Incredible atmosphere, service and food.
Forest Key
Delicious beef celebration with great variety of cuts and straightforward preparation that emphasizes the meat and rich fatty complexions of different cuts. Great sides and innovative starters. Inventive mixology cocktails and good selection of wines and apperetives. Definitely on the $$$$ side of things, but strong service and attention details throughout make a special experience.
Carly DeMello
Wonderful service but I didn't love the food. The butter on the meat was gamey and distracting. Prime rib was good, filet and under blade only so so. Quaint small restaurant with above average service. Drinks were slow during peak service. Meats take a LONG time to cook (because some of our group had well) and I wasn't impressed with the apps.
Sean Mansfield
The food and drinks were absolutely 5 stars. Loved it!
The problem was the automatic 20% tip on to the bill and subsequent service.
I assumed that because tip was included a that the prices were inflated to compensate like more other non tip restaurants do. I was unpleasantly surprised that my bill was much higher than I calculated. Management if you're reading this please consider changing how you include tips in the future. Simply increasing the prices of items on the menu leads to no surprises later.
My second problem was the service. If I'm paying 20% tip, I expect near flawless service. Twice I asked for a drink menu to not be given one. Instead the second time I asked the waiter told me a list of beverages. This led to a confusing situation where I just picked a drink and hoped it was what I wanted. Additionally our waiter brought us the wrong food. Not a problem mistakes like this happen, but I don't feel like should pay 20% for that level of service.
If the service was worthy of 20% I would happily paid. Sadly it was not.

This is tough one to review. Being a burger nerd I had been recommended to this place by a few people. Unfortunately I have a food a allergy to one of the toppings and their 'all removals and substitutions will be politely denied' was a bit annoying. We started with carpaccio which was just barely ok, the portion size was very small and beef was room temperature. The beef fat fried toppings were over the top and somewhat ruined the dish. For dinner I opted instead for a filet, 7oz. for $70 bucks. The cut was excellent, a very tiny bit past medium rare but overall good. In a nutshell, there is better beef to be had at more appropriate prices elsewhere. John Howie comes to mind.
We did not have an issue with their reservation service as someone else posted. Though it is annoying to have to sign up for a random service just to get a reservation.
Annabel Youens
Outstanding chefs tasting menu. The spring onion pancakes with beef belly are so delicious. The dessert was top notch. Very satisfied with the excellent service and attention to detail. We will return.
Judy DiBerardino
Good but not over the top as per reviews, problem here is cuts are not familiar unless you are a butcher. And they only may have only one serving of each cut. If you don't know what to ask you can get a cut you may not like. My steak ok not great my bf was on the chewy side and that was not told to us that his cut would be.
Jennifer Skaggs
Are you in Seattle? Are you a carnivore?
If you answered yes to both questions, make a reservation for Bateau right now. Pro tip - reserve an earlier dining time. Bateau is a perfect balancing act - fine dining, detailed and attentive service, and the ultimate suspense. Each night starts with a full menu of beef cuts. As the night progresses, and people order, items are marked off the board. Trust the service and suggestions. Lock down your steak choices early. Most of all, enjoy the experience.
Brian Bennett
The tasting menu had some odd flavor choices and was not as balanced as I would have hoped for (I.e. I was hoping for some sort of vegetable or palate cleanser between the 4 courses of beef that occurred).
The steaks and sides that people around us were eating looked good.
Nickitas Georgas
Phenomenal service, wonderful atmosphere, absolutely delicious and interesting dinner. If you want old-old world tender, juicy, artisanly dry aged, cut, and cooked meat with a taste that reminds you of the good old days before the processing became chemical and the taste flat, don't miss this place. It is worth every dime.
Alex Samano
One of the most unique and best places in Seattle to eat meat. If you love places like Daniels, The Met, and El Gaucho this place will offer you a new experience. Cuts are listed on the board (one steak per cut, sometimes two). All cuts are dry aged for as long as 64 days and vary from 5 to 34 oz (to share). Heads up, it's very pricy but worth it.
Christophe CHARPENTIER
If only we could have 6 Stars. The very best steakhouse I've ever been to. They have their own farms, butcher the carcasses on site, age themselves. Very modern setting, casual (which unusual for such a high quality standard). And the MEAT, the MEAT. A must for you're in town
Dan l
Best restaurant in Seattle (that I've been to). Every dish was perfectly cooked and delicious
Alyssa Kellogg
Great experience from the moment we walked in the door. Very hospitable and professional staff, especially our server, Josh. Great cocktails, amazing food, beautiful ambiance and overall great experience. Going to change the color scheme of my home Bathroom!

Excellent selection of steak. You will want to arrive early if you want to get your choice of steak. All their meat is local and limit cuts available per night. I recommend ordering 4 steaks to share at the table.
Colleen LaBelle
The steaks were delicious - but overpriced. And the menu definitely lacked vegetables! Please offer a few veggie sides & complimentary bread/butter. Dessert list could be improved with some classic offerings too.
William Edelman
Do you like steak? Do you want to like steak? Come here now. This place will deliver. I ordered the liver paté and it was how liver pate should be: delicately textured and almost like mousse. It melted in my mouth. Alongside it, the french onion soup felt like I was indulging in a melty medley of flavors. I felt like I was being ushered away by the wait staff of the enchanted castle in Beauty and the Beast. Love that feather duster ;) The steak was a Gracilis cut. It was incredible and easily the best steak I have ever had. It was aged to perfection but aided by being from one of the most oxygenated parts of the cow. It helps to know your anatomy before coming here.
Last but not least, my server was the most talented conversationalist I have ever experienced. She effortlessly wove conversation into the offerings and taught me a thing or two about steaks.
Billy Brewer
French Steakhouse. Something everyone should experience. Expensive for sure, and not an extensive menu, but definitely an experience. Tons of French wine and the whole cow, pick a cut off the chalkboard experience is actually a lot of fun. My favorite are the cuts you don't get anywhere else.
Alex Garmendia
Really cool place. Sort of a new different take on a steakhouse. You wint find the old black angus standards like fully loaded baked potato, salad bar and french onion soup. It's much better than that. There is a tasting menu that gives you sort of a... Highlight reel of the animal, 5 or 6 different preparations of the meat though none include what you would consider a steak. Though it sounds fun we chose the more "a la carte" option. We ordered several side dishes and a bunch of meat. Not many places ever have an oyster steak or a denver steak these days. But these guys did. They sell the meat by the weight of each steak. So they may have a 12 oz rib eye for 50 bucks or so, perhaps a 10 z sirloin for 40 etc. You get the idea. Really liked the place. I would pyt it in the $$$ range if you ballin. But you can feed youraelf for less.
catherine eytcheson
The food, cocktails, waitstaff, and room were fantastic! Not your average eatery, the price is scary, but our evening was memorable! I would love to have a couple of those cocktail glasses!
Tracy Thai
Delicious steak, amazing service, beautiful restaurant. This is one of my all-time favorite places to order a steak. They have cuts that you won't find elsewhere and each piece is one of a kind. It can sometimes be difficult to figure out which cut you should order, so definitely ask the staff to make a suggestion based on what you typically like.
Elizabeth Vaughn
We had an amazing experience with amazing recommendations thanks to our server Joshua. The quality of everything was fantastic
Captain Spaulding
I get what they are trying to do here as this is sort of a niche restaurant being able to pick out you own cut from the board. The service was good, the stake was good and the price was really high for what you get. Most important thing is to get there early as the best cuts go quick. I probably will not go back as I can get just as good or better stake for less money other places in Seattle.
Khoa Phan Howard
Go here with a group of 4 and get a big cut (and definitely come early, 5-6pm). Also come with an open mind and try odd cuts! The meat is just SO INCREDIBLE.
(I wouldn’t recommend the bread and butter unfortunately. Very boring. The matsutake scramble was stellar, and so were the cocktails)
Ben
Far and away the best take away meal both on flavor and value that I've had during this pandemic. Highly recommend the frites in addition to the meal for two. Simple preparation needed at home but so so worth it. This puts canlis family meal in the dust
Briana Kemp
Fun and romantic environment. Tried steaks wed never had before; amazing to taste the flavor differences! Our server was fantastic, explaining everything perfectly. We will be back again!
David LIM
A new steak experience. The place is amazing. Picked the wrong piece of meat but sooo worth it.
Kathleen H. Roberts
We had so much fun here! The décor is eye-catching and has a lot of character. The walls and ceiling are stark white, while a chalkboard along the back wall lists available cuts of local beef and an adjacent window showcases a locker full of aging sides of beef. Cool chalk drawings scattered throughout the space.
We did a five-course trying menu with drink pairings and enjoyed creative and various dishes, which stuck to a narrative without becoming predictable.
A beef carpaccio with turmeric and pickled rose petals came as the first course, and the mix of flavors was amazing! The consommé with a lillet and amaretto cocktail was a delight and a definite highlight.
I did think that one Gamay noir fell a bit flat alongside the steak it accompanied. Dessert was also a weak point for me, with pine oil cakes feeling slightly dry and in a somewhat odd contrast with the granita. However, the grasshopper soda digestif was a nice finish and super adorable.
Our server (black haired Italian woman with glasses) was so kickass. She gave us a fine dining experience that felt special, but never stuffy, and really made the night for us.
We liked it so much we came back for donuts in the morning! Thanks for a wonderful experience.
Jessica Turner
Expensive but delicious steak. They offer limited cuts per day, so come early if you want a selection. You get 4 choices of butter to top the steak. Also loved the Reuben appetizer
Meg Cohen
Fantastic experience. Ethically sourced beef, well trained and attentive staff. We had the chef's tasting menu, which was spectacular, especially the bresciole.
Deadward Louis
We had the Tasting Menu and loved every minute of it. If you can, spring for the wine pairing as well. It really extends the story of the food
C. veteran
Super fancy, creative food, love it. The staff is great and friendly. The ambiance and design of the restaurant is great. The food is also great, and they are good to their employees-- healthcare, benefits, time off around the holidays, etc, which makes it feel even better to support this business.
Clarissa Berger
Came here for my birthday dinner. I'm pregnant and have been dreaming of their filet mignon with bone marrow butter for weeks. Their staff is helpful in deciding what sides or appetizers to get off the menu (lots of unique options) (code for I didn't know what half the words meant). Do yourself a favor and get their mashed potatoes. They're creamy goodness.
Todd McMurtry
Excellent food with interesting cuts of beef. All aspects of dinner were handled well. My only criticism is that there are few salad and vegetable options. It's all beef all the time. But good.
Anna Raper
Not sure what I was expecting. But for the price I expected close to Michelin standard food. It was good steak and staff were fantastic. So if you want good steak definitely come here but if you expect something above and beyond you'll be disappointed.
Andrew Blackham
Typical Seattle restaurant with focus on beef. Locals and transplants from non-major urban cities will be impressed by the dressed-up ambience and "sustainability" pledges all over the restaurant, residents from places like Chicago, NY, and San Fran will be disappointed by the overpriced, pretentious, over-prepared, and undersized menu options (with average sides). The typical 20% service charge you find in most area restaurants applies here, which means your service will be normal. It won't be a bad experience, but you might be questioning whether it was worth it when you leave.
Eden Gebretsadik
The service and the food was a great experience. Fabulous restaurant for a date night or celebration. We tried the five meal course and our server James made sure we had everything we needed.
Clarissa Santoso
Bateau offers a limited amount of each cut daily. It's recommended that you come early or make a reservation. Servers are very helpful, and we love the unique condiments and sides. The nori butter is a must-try!
Alex Tran (Schimiggy)
Service is 5/5. Food is 6/5. They dry age all parts of the cow and list available meats on the chalkboard. It's connected to a General Porpoise in cap Hill. I'm a huge fan of their aligot (cheesy potatoes). I'll definitely be back!
Howard Sewell
A weird, theatrical dining experience. The food is mostly superb, but OMG, literally the most expensive meal I've ever eaten. ($700+ for 4 people.) Great? Sure. Would I go back? Not at these prices.
Julia Auger
Now this is a steak house. Fun concept highlighting beef from Washington state. Incredible aging and many different cuts. Makes for a sublime dinner experience with guidance from a outstanding service team.
Andreas Louca
Nice, vibrant atmosphere. Menu kind of restricted in terms of available choices, and hard to see what meat cuts are still available as they are only listed a blackboard.
Otherwise, good food, nice place!
Michelle Loprieno
Do you love beef? Want to try new cuts of a cow or really aged classic steaks? This place is for you. The staff and wine selection is also great.
Pam Gehl
Simply put. This is the best steak I’ve ever eaten. We had the sirloin and the bavette- and to top it off the service was great! Thanks Nick!
Eric Renn
Fantastic OVERPRICED steaks, but don't bring your kids here and expect the chef to make a plain burger. The policy is that you get what you get and the restaurant makes NO EXCEPTIONS to the way they decide food taste good to children...
David Levy
One of the best steakhouses I've ever been to. Charlie's steakhouse in New Orleans was my best all time. Bateau is in the top three. Great service as well
Cleve Johnson
It was a great experience. The appetizers and drinks were spectacular. The steak was a b+ but very expensive.
Chuck Fowler
Off menu burger is amazing, but pricey at $25.
Trina C.
Would give 4.5 stars if I could. Phenomenal service and amazing food. I wouldn’t say it’s a must-go but the chefs courses were a very memorable experience, esp for a special occasion. Very VERY very expensive- at this price I could probably fly to another city and have just as amazing food, but it’s prob a 5 star rating relative to Seattle.
David Leitch
The most enjoyably femme steakhouse imaginable. Service is helpful at walking you through the unusual cuts of aged beef offered by their in house butcher.
Spencer Judge
Fantastic steak and top notch service. If I had one piece of criticism it would be that the bone marrow butter tastes very salty for the first few bites, but mellows out pleasantly subsequently.
Heather Skeehan
Incredible food. The tasting menu was fun and delicious. The staff is helpful and friendly. And some of the unique/interesting cuts of meat are lovely to try.
Brandon Olander
absurdly good meat made into true art on a dish. From salads, to desserts come with an appetite and a sense for adventure. You will not be disappointed.
Addison Denenberg
All their steaks are butchered and aged in house. They specialize in unique cuts of meat. Everything was great. I will def go again
Joshua Schupp
Absolutely incredible steaks. We love it here and find every possible excuse for a special occasion to visit. We recommend it to every one of our friends and bring everyone we can.
Trevin Chow
Expensive but so worth it. They serve incredibly unique cuts of beef here, with most being served family style. Highly recommend trying this place out, but make sure your wallet can take it.
Jonathan Owen
Brought the wife here for an early Valentine's day dinner, sadly I think she now loves this place more than me :-(. We settled on the chef's five course tasting menu, which changes regularly. The service and food was outstanding, especially the wait staff's knowledge of everything on the menu. The novelty of this place is that they butcher their own cows which means they have a limited number of cuts. They list all the available cuts for the day on a large chalk board, they are crossed off as they are ordered. If you really have a hankering for a specific cut get an early seating!
Cap'n Grace
The best in dry aged beef. Select flights of steak and find out how the breed and pasturing effects the meat flavors.
Pieter De Temmerman
Excellent restaurant for steak lovers where you can find rare cuts on the menu. Come early enough as they have a limited selection reach night and run out of popular selections quickly. Not a great place for vegetarians as options are extremely limited.
Robert Scherpich
Wonderful food. Amazing server we had, patient and knowledgeable. Everything was so rich and delicious! Definitely drink a shot of Jagermeister after dinner.
Noah Richards
Amazing filet mignon! And don't skip the fries :) We had a bunch of different appetizers, sides, and sauces, and the whole table was definitely happy.
Bill Weber
Bateau must be French for heaven. This is one of the top steak places in the country.
Chad Jasmin
The overall experience was good and a place you should try.
Cruz Des Rosiers
We thoroughly enjoyed the rare cuts of beef and the octopus app was to die for. Service matched the phenomenal quality food. We will be back soon
Ripley MacDonald
Steak is good but not great. Sides were a mixed bag. Salad was great but everything else was meh. Given the price, I was disappointed.
Steven Bulbes
Some of the best food I've had in the past few years!! Would only recommend for people interested in eating meat.
Samuel Smolenski
The steaks are the real stars of the show here. Definitely recommend trying to the different ages!
Sam Hassan
Excellent stake restaurant. They have a select menu of different cuts, that are crossed off the blackboard with each order so you can see what's popular.
Honi Harrison
This place is overpriced. Although the service is fantastic & the cuts of meat are lovely, the atmosphere does not warrant the expense.
Might as well visit El Goucho for a more high-end experience.
Claudio C
Secure your socks. They will be blown off from the amazing food this here place will serve you.
Kevin Hoang
Incredible place to bring friends and family
For any steak lovers, highly recommend this place
Definitely try bavette cuts if you like a lean cut like new York or skirt steak.
Stephen Reardon

Sarah Calloway
I've had a lot of steak. This was hands down the best I've ever had. Incredible unique options. Just tell your server what you like and let them choose. They know what they are doing. Great wine, amazing service. And the mushrooms and Algot are not to be missed. Perfect date spot.
Will Skinner
We ordered the 21 day dry aged New York and 126 day dry aged sirloin tip, along with the French onion croquettes, mixed mushrooms, and kohlrabi. The New York steak was excellent, and the sirloin tip was also good, although 126 day beef is an acquired taste. The flavored butter served with the steak distracted from the flavor of the beef - plain butter or none at all would have been better. The sides were all far too salty and one-dimensional, tasting mainly of beef tallow and soy sauce. The mushrooms, though perfectly cooked, were nearly inedible due to the overwhelming soy sauce flavor. At this price point ($170 pp) that is unacceptable.
Trinity Poage
Very pleasant experience. Staff listens to what type of steak you like and provide their best recommendations. All the flavors blended together, and the spot is very romantic.
Elizabeth Saari
My husband and I had a fantastic belated Valentine’s here at Bateau this past Monday. The atmosphere was very welcoming, as well as the staff, and of course the food was AMAZING, one of the best meals we’ve enjoyed in a long time. We especially loved the carpaccio and the fromage ice cream from the chefs tasting menu, which pairs perfectly with the port. Special shout out to our server Ash and another employee Taylor who made out night feel extra special!
