Reviews of Screen Door Eastside
Samantha Cox Norris
The food was so good! The service was amazing. I got the chicken and waffles and the presentation was perfect! The chicken was seasoned amazingly well. I also tried the cinnamon rolls. They were very fluffy and flavorful. We also had the Banana Foster French Toast. 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾 Can’t wait to come back and visit.

They are busy but worth the wait! We waited about an hour at noon on Sunday. They have a cute patio area for you to wait as well as benches inside. You can order biscuits & beverages to enjoy while you wait. Their staff wear masks & they wipe down & sanitize every table after use. Appreciate their efforts! We didn't initially order the praline bacon but after chatting with the neighboring table we decided to add an order. It was so good! Not super sweet. We also got the chicken & biscuit with pork gravy & fosters French toast. All very good! We will have to come back to try more items.
Drop someone off to put your name down then look for parking.

We tried Screen Door for brunch on New Year’s Day and it was a great decision! The restaurant was pretty busy and they said we’d need to wait, but it was maybe 3 minutes before they seated us. The chicken & waffles was top notch—I feel like you’ve really got to get the chicken right for this dish to shine and they nailed it! Flavorful & moist! Two of us ordered the bananas foster French toast and it was super delicious. Our other friend got the bacon & praline waffle and said it was really good, too. Would definitely recommend and will hopefully be back soon!

There was a short line when we arrived around 15 min before opening. Shortly after, there were at least 20 other parties. The place is big and offers indoor and outdoor dining and socially distanced which was nice given the pandemic.
Service was fast and I forgot our waiter’s name, but he was a delight. He was very attentive and offered many suggestions. The food is really tasty (see photos), offered large portions and of great quality. Cocktails were delish.
I would definitely come back again.

Like everyone else, it's mostly good things to say.
Service - excellent. Super friendly ninja waitresss. When we arrived, they told us about a 30-45 minute wait. We got back around the 30 minute mark, but probably weren't seated until a total wait time of close to 1.5 hours. Crazy busy, but the accuracy could use some work because we would have gone elsewhere.
Food - 5/5 fried chicken and biscuit/gravy. Only complaint is that I could have used a bit more gravy. Praline bacon...it's exact what you imagine. Yummy
Price - not cheap by any means, definitely not shocking in Portland, especially given the reputation they have. 4/5.

Screen door has continued to be one of my favorite breakfast spots in portland for years. The only thing I don’t like is the wait time but we went at around noon and didn’t have to wait! Our server Rudy was wonderful and very patient with my group. We loved each item we ordered. Thank you for another great brunch screen door!
Kellen McInerny
One of my favorite places to take family and friends from out of town.
The portions are huge and the food is delicious. The server promised I like the coleslaw and if I didn't then he'd take it take care of it.
Very friendly and professional staff that take care of you while the food fills you up.

I have been trying to get to the Screen Door for some time now, I finally made it in on my why home from PDX ( the perfect breakfast place if your heading that direction). Turns out is was everything I had hoped and more. I order their legendary chicken and waffles and my other half ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of scrambled eggs. The chicken was perfectly cooked, golden brown juicy and crispy and just the right amount of batter. The waffle was also perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and light and moist on the inside. The biscuits were fluffy with stick to your ribs gravy. As a foodie I have say that eggs are not that easy to cook well and our eggs were very good. If you haven't been here try them out, I think you'll be glad you did. As always be mindful, be happy and be the best you. 😎😋☺️

First time here and what a pleasant surprise!
Food was great! Portions were big too.
They have both indoor and outdoor sitting.
Our server was very nice and attentive, and kept updating about when the food will be ready (which was fast anyways!)
We loved it and definitely coming back!

Screen Door is a popular southern eatery. We picked this place because they took reservations and we didn't want to have to wait in line.
Comfort food is what you expect here and comfort food is what you get. Lowcountry shrimp and grits (smooth grits), chicken (crispy) and biscuits, crispy fried oysters... What's not to like?
The biscuits were probably the weakest part of the meal. But overall, still a good place to try.

Best brunch place in Oregon. The food is super filling and tasty. I ordered the Cajun scramble and chicken waffles. The omelet was very flavourful with small, well-cooked pieces of onion and peppers. The chicken was crispy on the outside, slightly dry inside but pretty decent. The waffles are quite soft and cinnamon-y.
There was a bit of wait as it’s always packed - so assume a 30 minute wait to get in and another 15 minutes for your food at peak times.
Brad
The Screen Door is worth a stop. The fried chicken is some of the best I have ever had. It's seasoned well and cooked to perfection. The praline bacon shouldn't work, but it does. The service is excellent. This place can get pretty busy, but they are very efficient and clear tables at record speed. I'll always make a stop at Screen Door when I'm in the area.

We sat outside and it was warm..with 2 dogs. Tables a little small but workable for 4 people! More than enough food per plate, I'd suggest sharing to try more options. Food was absolutely amazing! Staff was great!
Jingyi Xu
Mushroom scramble was amazing! The eggs were soft and fluffy and the mushrooms were super flavorful. The fried oyster was pretty good too. The Benedict and the fried chicken were average for me
Marissa Pimentel
Wow, exactly what I was expecting. Very delicious and filling meal. The coffee was also phenomenally charged. And lastly, super friendly staff.
Tip: use the ‘Reserve a table’ feature on Google Maps! We arrived on time and we’re seated right away. Alas, it was towards closing time.
Ambar Fawziyah
Food is absolutely amazing! There was a line and a bit of a wait on a Saturday afternoon which is expected but the 30 min wait was well worth it. Portions are large and flavors are powerful. A go to spot in Portland. I especially loved this place because it was so nice to finally see people of color (like myself) dining too!
Madison Biggs
Incredible breakfast spot!! Don't leave here without having one of their cream cheese cinnamon rolls! The staff was extremely nice, they got our food out quickly and the spot was very cute! We got the chicken and gravy, and the Cajun eggs and I would highly reccomend both!
Will Willingham
Amazing, been wanting to come here, and finally had the opportunity. It did not disappoint. The staff was smiling and friendly, food was great, fun and busy atmosphere. I might try to be tough enough to get the 3 Chicken and waffles. Saw quite a few go out, and everyone had the same surprised expression. Haha. Will definitely be back!
TonyTesla
The hype was just as good as the breakfast experience. My waiter was super cool and attentive. The music was perfect for the atmosphere. I read the reviews regarding their chicken and waffles and needless to say the reviews were on point. I hadn't had a juicy piece of fried chicken in a while and the breading was on point. The waffle was also amazing and it was almost like I was biting into a piece of carrot cake. The $3 I paid for real syrup was also a good call. The syrup and house Hot sauce tied everything together perfectly. The price was just right for the quality and taste of the food. I would definitely come back again and give it my seal of approval #fatboyapproved #gorditoapproved

I love Screen Door. I have come here for years for the chicken and waffles but I also love the praline covered bacon and the shrimp and grits. You really can't go wrong with a scramble either. They have great cocktails as well. Highly recommend this place but beware it gets really busy especially on a weekend. You'll have to wait but there's coffee next door.
John Q
I LOVE THIS PLACE! Every time we are in the city we stop here. The food and service is so great. We came for breakfast on a Saturday and it was so delicious. The wait time wasn’t too bad about 20 min, we got there a little after 9 when they opened.
D. Schaefer
Highly Recommend. I had fried chicken with gravy. The portion was very large. Taste was excellent. We made a reservation online a few days in advance, so were able to bypass the line outside. Staff were excellent. I will probably plan to come back once or twice a year.
B P
This was the first stop on our vacation to Portland and it did not disappoint! The fried chicken that they're known for was juicy and flavorful. Waffle was different and good because it was made from sweet potato. Breakfast potatoes are well seasoned and biscuits you could tell were made fresh. The staff was very friendly and I saw someone bring in their small dog to sit at the table on the patio. Loved this place and would definitely recommend it!
Sahid Martin Robles Bello
You'll be waiting a long time but it is definitely worth it. The portions are very generous, so if you're a modestly sized person it's better to have someone to share with. Very good chicken and waffles!
Ryan Ebert
This place is delicious and a Portland gem. I highly recommend the chicken and waffles with the house hot sauce.
Also on a Thursday morning we had no wait to be seated. This place does get busy on the weekends.
Alexis Bright
I have been here many many times! It is always busy. Now that they allow reservations it is always a good idea to reserve a table ahead of time if you can, but they do accept walk ins.
My recommendations:
Brunch
Chicken and waffles, cheddar grits, Cajun scramble, cinnamon rolls, shrimp and grits and banana cream pancakes
Dinner
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, greens, Mac and cheese, catfish, hush puppies (they’re amazing!!!) hibiscus lemonade/tea and creamer corn
Mallory Sussman
Totally charming and absolutely delicious. Can’t miss the fried chicken and sweet potato waffles with real maple syrup. Fried okra was delicious as well. Cute patio and great wait staff.
Gene Beachguide
I've been visiting Screen Door for a number of years every time I'm in town and it never disappoints!
This time I messed up and made my reservation for the wrong day, and Mike the host still got us a spot without waiting very long. Thank you for that, Mike!
Everything I have tried here is delicious, but of course Chicken & Waffle is the highlight for us. Other excellent choices are Chicken & Biscuit, Biscuits & Gravy, and Shrimp & Grits, but I doubt you can go wrong with anything on the menu.
Hung Dinh
Great brunch place, foods were superb. You must reserve ahead of time if you wanted to be seated right away on the weekend. The only downside is that we had to wait approximately 45-50 min for our foods so dont come expect to get your food right away. Overall a great experience and I highly recommend it
Shaun R S
My friend in SFO recommended the best Fried Chicken...
on Waffles at 09:00?
I tot NO! But was surprised....
Perfectly fried was the chicken... so were the waffle done.
I finished everything on the plate!
Greg Clapp
I've recently had James Beard award winning fried chicken in both New Orleans and Atlanta, and Screen Door is still my favorite joint for fried chicken with all the southern sides. The food and service are consistently excellent, and the atmosphere is comfortable, though it can get a bit loud with a full house. Not a huge menu of craft cocktails, but there's always something good, with highly capable bartenders and a good selection of beer and wine. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and value, though I usually order several drinks and extra food for leftovers the next day, so my spend is probably a bit higher than average. And one of the best things to come out of the pandemic was easy takeout ordering and reservations at Screen Door.
Rose Morris
Went twice; once for dinner and again for brunch! Both menus are excellent, huge portions with the best southern food I've had this far north. Delicious cocktails too! Also the service was great, really nice staff all around.
Best menu items: fried chicken, cheddar chive biscuits, marionberry cream soda, and their breakfast biscuits and gravy.
Misha Smith
This place is packed make sure you make a reservation. The food is good, the portions are huge so plenty to share. The servers are super kind and make good suggestions and check on you often. The praline bacon is to die for. I ordered the oysters Benedict and was a little disappointed thinking that the oysters would be underneath the hollandaise sauce and they were just on the side so not what I was expecting. The cheesy grits were delicious. The fried chicken spicy so beware of that they have a little kick to it if you don’t like spice somebody at my table told me that.
Joel Johnson
Stopped in on the recommendation of some friends. We were not disappointed we split the huevos rancheros and one piece of fried chicken. They were both delicious the chicken was freshly fried and extra crispy which I really liked. Will definitely stop in again next time we're in Portland
White & Gray Matters
Loved the chicken fingers and the porch swing lemonade! Really good food. Ryan the bartender was very quick and nice to char with about what else to do in portland.
If you have a chance to try Hreen Chartreuse, go ahead. It is an herbal liquor and tastes great! One of few bars that carry it.
De'Von Walker
No waffles past breakfast 😭. Went here because we heard great things about the Chicken and Waffles but weren't able to have them. I got the Chicken dinner which was good and big enough to split. The sides were ok but they have good options for salads. If you want to be healhy-ish this is a good spot. I will return for waffles.
H. E.
Screen Door is just incredible for every meal. The two locations have slightly different menus and they both almost always have a wait. I highly recommend making a reservation. There are plenty of options on the menu for both veg and meat eaters. The mushroom gravy is really good with the biscuits. Beware, if you get eggs and meat with the biscuits you're looking at a whole lot of food on your plate! Definitely try their cocktails as well - I recommend the bloody mary.
Josh Salvage
Food was phenomenal, service was good, only problem nowhere to park. I had the fried chicken and gravy with biscuits and cheese grits, everything was top notch. Will definitely be returning with my wife for another try.
Gordon Ulrickson
If you find yourself in Portland, Oregon and are hungry, I enthusiastically suggest you try “The Screen Door”. We started with their Bananas Foster french toast, then added a mushroom egg scramble and praline bacon. It was WONDERFUL!!! The staff was friendly and attentive.
Vicky Tran
The chicken and waffles here is known for a reason. The chicken came steaming hot and the waffle complimented it well. The waffle itself is decent at most but with the chicken, it's a must try. The eggs were smothered in butter so I'd probably pass next time but the fries with the homemade sauce were good. Overall I'd get the chicken & waffle with a plate of fries again!
Cassandra Buitron
So we've heard a lot about this place. Finally got to go for a date night. Short version, great ambience, great alcoholic and non alcoholic drink selection. Chicken and Mac were good. I love their homemade hot sauce! But I ordered a beet salad and it was really really really underseasoned. Beets need some love, like salt and acid. But otherwise a good experience.
Crystal Simpson
Everything was amazing! We waited almost an hour for a table but the food and service were well worth the wait. Recommend making a reservation if possible. I will definitely in the future
Todd F
Really is a destination worthy restaurant. The fried chicken is amazing. Hard to imagine how they could be improved... Their french fries are amazing! The Deviled Eggs totally made a pact with the devil to be so tasty. The coleslaw was creamy and again perfection!
The ribs were just good, not great. Same with the hush-puppies, good, but not great to my tastes. I need to come back and try so many other dishes. Plus, still need to try their brunch.
Emma
Good brunch place but it’s a bit crowded and loud. Great biscuit and cinnamon roll though! Their catfish is fresh and crispy. Be aware that the kitchen is open, so your clothes will be absorbing some food smells.
Andrea Keller
Always delicious and a must go for any Portland visit. The chicken biscuits and praline bacon are amazing. Huge servings! Yum.
Sydnee Kirkman
I love this place. Every dish I've had here was phenomenal. Be hungry, because their potion sizes are wonderfully huge. They even let you bring in a latte from next door if you don't want house coffee.
Kimberly Andersen
Excellent restaurant and a favorite place of mine! We actually changed our Oregon coast trip timeline to be sure to go through Portland in order to stop at this place. We LOVE the ambiance, the staff, and especially the food!! Everything is good! We especially love the Huevos Rancheros and Chicken and Waffles but also love the biscuits and gravy and the praline waffle. I recommend getting a reservation, especially for weekend brunch!
Dylan Petry
Absolutely amazing food and great signature spins on classic cocktails. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Beautiful plating and generous portions for the price.
Michael Humphries
Highly recommend going for dinner, brunch always has a super long wait but you can pretty easily go for dinner and it's amazing. Cat fish is 👌 Mac and cheese is the best restaurant Mac I've ever had …
Gervona Johnson
Came to celebrate my uncle's 60th birthday and it was everything. The food was really good. The atmosphere was good. Service was good. I would definitely come back!
Chuck Northrop
Three dishes all done perfectly. Fried oysters Benedict with wonderfully griddle-toasted English muffins, beautifully cooked bacon, amazing Hollandaise sauce and poached eggs done to perfection. Mushroom scramble with, wow, cheddar grits. Fried chicken and gravy just like in the South. The wait to seat was 30 minutes (arrived 10:50am on a Sunday) and we waited an additional 45 minutes (longer than usual but worth it). Had a mimosa that was excellent as well. A great destination restaurant.
Ingrid Quiroz
Not surprised this place is so highly reviewed. This place runs like a well oiled machine. Our reservation was on time, our service was fantastic, and the food was superb. Charles took care of us and was a pleasure. We could see the kitchen from our seats and they too are rock stars. A definite stop if you're from out of town and looking for the best in the city.
Mark Seleen
The 4 of us had a wonderful breakfast. I was the only one who hadn't been there before and their hype about Screen Door lived up to its name. The Shrimp & Grits were perfect, seriously. Hopefully they do Salmon with Grits soon, I'd be back soon for that childhood favorite! The Pecan bacon was a first for me, it was rich and a fantastic shareable. Pricey, so we can't visit all the time, but I'm definitely treating myself on the regular.
Curt Seligmiller
I loved the food and the staff. Just moved to Portland and this place gave me great vibes! And the chicken and waffles I had this morning... I'm getting the same thing tomorrow morning!!!
Michael Jones
Best breakfast in Portland. Chicken is very flavorful, crispy, and moist. Oyster Benedict was great. Super busy restaurant on a Saturday morning and I understand why
Christina Lee
Wow, the best chicken and waffle ! Visited on Tuesday for lunch - a little over an hour wait. The host keeps track of everyone well. There is a patio for outdoor dining. If you don't want to wait - ask to sit at the bar. The chicken and waffle is simply amazing - super crispy chicken and flavorful waffle - must get!! Fried oyster is great as well - good texture using corn meal. The praline bacon was ok - could use a little crunch for texture like brown sugar. They are busy but all the staffs are super helpful and friendly.
Lizbeth Gaytan
Chicken and waffles and the banana french toast are my go tos every time. Did find a small hair but they were kind enough to remove it off our bill. Can get busy but the food is DELICIOUS 10/10 recommend.
Alan
A popular southern restaurant serving hearty brunch classics. The low country shrimp and grits is a classic. The grits are particularly creamy and cheesey, more on the solid than liquid side of the spectrum. It’s not particularly exciting by itself, but the gravy enlivens the dish as well as the bacon bits. The shrimp are large and fairly standard. The buttermilk biscuit on the side is crispier and drier. The fried chicken and waffles features a sweet potato waffle, which has a faint inherent sweetness but is otherwise similar. The chicken has a nice over-fried crust but the meat inside can get a bit dry. I wasn’t too impressed. The praline bacon is delicious but also probably the most unhealthy. Praline nuts are crusted onto bacon using grease, then syrup is added for caramelization. It tastes amazing and is quite unique.
Jason Power
Atmosphere, staff and food were amazing. We got in early enough to now have to wait but I think the wait would be worth it. The bar was running and super busy for breakfast and the drinks looked great, will have to try next time we are in Portland. Food was also great I like the fact that the chicken and waffles comes in different sizes so you can get an amount that fits your needs.
Richard “Damian” Martinez
If Chicken and Waffles could cure illness, that’d be dope, but in the meantime, settle up to the fluff and savory decadence the fine folks at Screen Door have waiting for you.
The legends and rumors are true: if there’s one thing Screen Door has a reputation for, it’s the Chicken and Waffles hands down. As an avid C&W enthusiast, I am utterly enthralled to tell you my glowing review.
The waffles are a notch above excellent being fluffy and pillow like while the chicken is spiced just enough to give it an edge, while the mega-crunch breading gives it the stamina to hold up to waterfalls of gooey, maple syrup drenched on top.
The rest of the restaurant is utterly delightful with each and every staff member eager to please with adroit enthusiasm and grace.
I’m sad I cannot pack up Screen Door in a box and take it with me. Portland, I will miss you. Take care of Screen Door for me, and until we meet again. Stop reading and order the dang Waffle man.
Makela Steward
The presentation was beautiful, the service was great and the portions were huge. However the food was just average. Overall really positive experience, just didn't care for the food.
John Deodato
I've been meaning to try Screen Door for a while now, and after my first visit I shouldn't have waited so long! The place was packed on a Monday night, and it's no wonder, the food here is crazy good southern cooking. Fried chicken was better than great, as were the ribs, and everything else we tried.
Rich Ash
I love the food here. When I come visit from California I always have dinner here. Very friendly staff. Expect a line outside before they open at 5pm.
Kally Shar
We were seated quickly and service was on the ball dispiye being busy. The cinnamon roll was disappointing, but the biscuits and the mushroom gravy were amazing!! Definitely want to visit again. Only minus: they don't have cocoa.
loren bass
This food is delicious! Very well seasoned and will get you good and full. Highly recommend and will return (frequently)!
Leah Johnson
I love the chicken and waffles at Screen Door! Its the only restaurant in Portland I will.stand in line for. Crispy chicken, crunchy and fluffy (how do they do that?!?) waffle. I had something else from menu once and I went back to the chicken and waffles. A little crowded farmhouse atmosphere. Helpful & friendly staff.
Daniel Salinas
The food here is very very very good! Even as a Texan, I was able to thoroughly enjoy the different breakfast choices and tastes that this restaurant has to offer. I would definitely visit here again when in Portland.
Hamala Makala
I’ve lived on the west coast for a little under a decade now and have yet to find decent southern food. Came here and was pleasantly surprised with the genuine tasting biscuits and gravy as well as the unique spin on juevos rancheros (the brisket adds a nice smoky flavor). The hot sauce here at screen door is quite mild but has good flavor. We also ordered a salad which tasted great but this place is definitely known more for their breakfast and brunch items.
Vanessa Chavez
Southern comfort at is finest! Yummy food, big portions, and reasonable pricing. Parking is not easy but it’s worth it.
Amanda Lafollette
Ok. I've lived in Portland three years now. I've always heard that screen door is a must, but I avoided crowds and long waits way before covid. Finally decided to try it. And now I understand. Everything was perfect, even the service. Worth the hype.
Tanner Thomas
As a North Carolina native, I'm always judgemental of 'Southern' food found outside of the South. The Screen Door did not disappoint. My chicken and waffles were phenomenal! So was the coffee!
Chris Young
Recommend by a friend and it didn't disappoint. Best d@mn fried chicken I've had in awhile. Can't wait to come back and try more specialty dishes
Dallas Holladay
Great atmosphere, lots of tasty southern dishes. Service was very good. Can get quite busy so I suggest going during off hours.
JRThiker
Nice lunch passing thru town. Green chickpea salad with biscuits and sausage gravy. Salad was terrific. Biscuit a little hard, gravy too thick for my taste, and too much thyme. Lacked a good sausage flavor, like in TN and KY. Nice service, easy parking at this location.
Michela Storm Frederiksen
We waited about 5-10 minutes for a table, which is very short for a popular place like this.
The service wasn't good nor bad, basically forgettable.
Two ordered the huveros rancheros and they said it was the best they had ever tasted because of the pulled beef and delicious avocado cilantro crème.
We also ordered a pork loin eggs Benedict, which was good. We had to order extra hollandaise sauce. The egg white was a bit too over cooked for my taste. I personally don't like egg whites very much, so I like it to be a thin as possible with a very runny yolk. The roasted potatoes that came with it, where very deliciously seasoned in cajun/creole spices.
And as you should when you go to screen door, you of course have to try the fried chicken and waffle! For a fried chicken breast it is pretty moist, but the batter is crispy and well seasoned. The waffle on the other hand was a bit too dry and too heavy on the baking spices (it tasted a lot like pumpkin spice). And unfortunately you don't really taste the sweet potato that's in the waffle.
Maybe this place should be known for its memorable rancheros instead of its fried chicken.
James Avenoso
Food is great, service is alright. Bloody mary has a nice horseradish kick. Eggnog was ok. Wish their was music on the patio. Chicken and waffles was great.
Kelley Vincent
Our first visit to Screen Door was simply amazing. It is a great place to eat. Great service, great atmosphere, wonderful patio and the food was exceptional. We can't wait to go back to Portland and eat at Screen Door again. Truly, southern cooking at its finest.
Leah Botkin
The food is amazing. I highly recommend the mushroom and goat cheese scramble! The service is equally amazing. I am an out of towner and everyone was so friendly.
Aaron Lascano
This place is a must stop. The food is amazing. The praline bacon is a revelation. It is one of the best things I have ever had. The chicken sandwich was very very good as well.
You can't go wrong with chicken and waffles. The sweet potato waffle does have a spice that I didn't like, but it did not stop me from eating it all. The chicken has great flavor and it is perfectly cooked and seasoned.
Alayna Chavez
10 out 10! Great find. It's really neat that the cook can change the menu and let us taste their creations. Well done. Impressive skills in the kitchen.
kendall krage
The staff was kind and wonderful. The drink was well balanced. The food was great. Tender ribs, juice chicken, great sized portions.
Iris wilhelm
Good food and great service. Only reason this is a 4 star review..super slow kitchen, Waited an hour for our food. They did give us free cornbread and a dessert to help compensate for the long wait.
Gbaby779
Food was ok, I ordered the Rib plate I was plated "4 bones" of ribs, Greens had too much Vinegar and TOO many stems, Red beans and Rice was Good, Cornbread was DRY && food was lukewarm not hot. All for $34.00. At LEASE at BJ'S you get a half rack of Baby Back Ribs for $28.00.
All I got was Repeat 4 Bones for $34.00🤔. Service was very Good, tho.
Irvine Montebello-Alvarez
Really good chicken tenders! I enjoyed this restaurant. Come with patience though. They get backed up and take a while to get your order out.
Kirra Ann
So good! My friends and I went here while on vacation and though the wait could be 45mins to an hour, it is so worth the wait!! Servers are so nice, drinks are delicious. The spiked iced coffee is amazing!!
Ricky King
Hot Damn! They brought the real south to PDX! Hands down the best fish n’ grits I had to date! Great atmosphere and great service!
AJ Park
Screendoor is pretty popular and we came in for a late lunch on Sunday and the wait wasn't too long but as soon as we got inside, there were so many tables and too many people for that small of a space. I'm torn because it's great that the restaurant is doing well, but even pre-pandemic I would have thought it was crowded. The food is good, we got the chicken and waffles and the chicken sandwich. A little bit salty for my taste but I'm sure it wouldn't bother most people.
K Wilson
Everything I ordered here was DELICIOUS! The service was prompt and friendly. The ambiance was inviting and a breakfast place to visit over and over again. Order the French toast, biscuits, and veggie sausage.
Matt Entrikin
My wife and I went to a Play “Hadestown” and while waiting to leave the theatre I was looking up to reserve a table and she was googling the Screen Door menu! Great minds think A like. We love the Screen Door restaurant. It is a very special place for us.

Wow, I loved my experience here. Definitely busy during peak hours, and street parking. Highly recommend the chicken+waffles and the huevos rancheros. They also have outdoor seating~
Michael Krochter
Top notch brunch here! If I had the time on my trip I would have eaten here for every meal!
Portion sizes were huge and all of my party enjoyed their meals. Also who doesn't like catfish and grits!
Ashley Young
Some of the best food I’ve ever had! You have to get the fried chicken and waffles! Everyone but one person ordered it and we all were not disappointed. Next was the mimosas! You can order a 6 or 12 oz and I love a big mimosa aka just champagne and they delivered. If you can stand a little wait, this is the place to go for brunch!
Maria Remos
The shrimp and grits, to die for. The biscuits, buttery. The coffee?! Amazing. I love the pickle jars and chose to say close so I could stare at them and dream.
Mike Trebour
We had a reservation and we were seated immediately with an option of outside or inside. We chose outside and we were not disappointed. The Chicken and Waffles were incredible and a must have. The two piece is plenty! I am looking forward to coming back and trying the scallops!
Tess Garner
Their food is just so darn good. I hate waiting but it’s worth it here. Had to get the chicken and waffles cause duh!
Jonathan Amann
Always excellent, had breakfast for the first time (black-eyed pea fritter, mushroom goat cheese scramble, cheese grits) and it hit all the right notes. Definitely in my top 5.
Dale Gardner
This place is AMAZING!!!!!
The food is seasoned perfectly, served hot, and a portion fit for a king. They also have the best home made cream soda I have tried anywhere in the world. The staff is on top of everything the place is clean. We will be back
Thomas Carter
Great comfort style food in Portland ..If you want a good old style fried chicken spot this is where it is...They have tons of sides to pick from..Mac & Cheese and Mash Potatoes & Gravy are on point...Cocktails and beer /wine list are full of great picks
Vicki Choy
The staff were amazing. Super friendly and kind. Our server was attentive, our water was never empty. Our food came out relatively quickly. Shrimp and grits were delicious. Chicken was good, but a little dry, very crispy and went well with the sweet potato waffle. Got the fish and grits, grits were creamy and good. Cat Fish was typical, as expected nothing fancy, but the winner on the plate was the biscuit. Don't sleep on the biscuit and gravy. Also ordered the praline waffles which were tasty, good combo of sweet and savory which makes you want to go back for more.
Overall good food, great atmosphere.
Ingrid Kwok
A very popular place for brunch in Portland. Do expect there will be a bit of wait there. The fried oysters were great!
Britt Baker
Really impressed. One of the best breakfasts I've ever had by far, and a staple of the Portland brunch scene. We had a party of six and everyone completely loved their food. Veggie frittata especially blew my mind. Will definitely be going back.
Nicole (Tha Muse)
Went with a friend, and it was the first time there for both of us! It was a suggestion from a friend out of town, who enjoys this spot. We ended up getting seated before our reservation, but it took a while to get our food ordered, after we knew what we wanted. It was a pretty packed restaurant all around. As an appetizer, we shared some gumbo. It was alright, not the best. I got the griddle burger, and sweet potato fries. The burger was very good. The only downside to it, was the bottom bun was so soggy, that I had to be careful with the whole burger falling apart. It was already a mess with the sauces dripping out the whole time. My friend had the fried catfish sandwich, which was a success. Then we both split the pecan pie dessert. Good ending to the night!
Adam Clohessy
The food here is amazing. The second the food hit the table we were ready to chow down. Afterwards a good long nap was needed to suggest all of the delicious food.
bruce hutson
An easy walk from Lolo Pass. We didn’t expect to find good southern eats here(we’re both from the south), and it was good enough that I wasn’t able to get a pic of the hush puppies. Catfish was light and crisp, the gumbo was so worth it, and the collard greens had good pot likker I’m the bottom. Just go check it out
ferial mhr
This place is too good to be true
Absolutely awesome food quality
Busy and long wait list but totally worth it
10/10 recommend
Staff are busy so do not expect them to be super friendly but not bad really
I love this place
Jennifer Vachon
Pretty good southern style food. The greens and fried okra were 100%! The chicken and waffle was good, but would have been better with butter and warm maple syrup. The sweet potato waffle tasted like carrot cake (YUM!) The brisket Mac & Cheese was pretty tasty, but with the BBQ sauce on top it may be too sweet for some. The fried catfish was good if you like catfish.
Api Gemar
We made a reservation ahead of time so we got seated quickly so I would recommend that on the weekend. It is a very loud and small space. The service was really great! The server took our drink order and food order at the same time. The Bloody Mary was spicy and good. The food took 50 minutes to come out. But, it was VERY busy. The food was fresh and good. The chicken tenders were hand battered and spicy and the house made ranch was so good. My mom loved her banana foster French toast and my dad got a mushroom scramble with cheese grits and loved it. This is a fun place to come try at least once.

While visiting Vancouver and Portland with 3 friends, we decided to try the Screen Door for dinner. One of my friends had been there before and knew how great it was. We all ordered different dishes and shared them around with each other. Everything we had was amazing! I can't even list one item as being better than another because all of them were so good. Then, we had dessert and again each ordered different items to all share. I would definitely plan to go there again. There were 4 of us and with a couple of appetizers, dinner and desserts plus tip it was $180. It was fun and worth the money for a special evening together.
Patcharapun Visetbhakdi
Great place for breakfast, kind and friendly staff, love this place... One of the best waffle for me, it seems like they give it a carrot cake feel to the waffle... Must try
Taylor Gardner
Outstanding. Every other review or food blog or Portland’s “best” list rightfully nailed this place as a worthy stop. We enjoyed the chicken & waffles (superb) and the jambalaya (pretty solid), both happy campers! The cocktail list also is a great extension of the cooking style: Hurricane was properly sweet/balanced!
Love the outdoor dining space, too. Good for COVID, but it’s also just nice. Shady, not a terribly busy street. Also, much easier access than downtown west of the Willamette.
Overall, great experience!
Joe Samaniego
Fried Chicken dinner was delicious! The apple cheesecake was so good and the cocktails were fabulous!
Blake Wilbanks
You can feel the fun and energy in the air…people are craving breakfast. Coffee is solid, the breakfast is over the top.
Mike Goldman
Really good southern comfort food. The chicken was juicy and crispy and the gravy super flavorful. I also really loved the mac and cheese here. Super rich and delicious. This place can get super busy so pack your patience. Word seems to of gotten out about this gem.
Charlie Butler
I loved my recent visit here. The chicken is amazing and has a small kick. The service was great and attentive. We maple pecan bacon was amazing but kinda pricey. But we all loved everything we got.
Shelby Benson
Probably some of the best food I've ever had! I sat at the bar and was able to watch the kitchen crew work and it was quite a unique experience. Ryan, the bartender, was also amazing and speedy! It happened to be quite busy on this Saturday night, so you might want to make a reservation.
Danielle Schmidt
I thought we had showed up way too late to get a table and the place was packed but I was so shocked we got a table in no time! The food was absolutly amazing and the service knew just the right time to ask about more drinks. If you're looking for an intimate or quiet spot though this place in not that; they were packed with hustle and bustle. The team there did amazing!
Courtney
First time going to this restaurant we did dine-in. Placed a reservation online and showed up early. We were seated quickly, but went through 2 glasses of wine before our food arrived. It was busy during dinner time, but the wait for food was still longer than expected. The 2 bathrooms were always occupied and there ended up being a line of 4 people waiting to use the restroom consistently throughout dinner. The food was really great. Everything tasted fantastic including their cocktails. I would try again for breakfast menu sometime.
Ankur Yadav
A decent restaurant with a good ambiance!
The most recommended food is the fried chicken with gravy and waffles. If you are a vegetarian then Okra fry just like tots is one good option. This place is heaven for those who love biscuits with gravy. The chicken and waffle dishes are little expensive but sufficient for two people to eat with some sides for a regular diet. The restaurant also serves good cocktails and plain liquor and have a friendly staff.

I needed to make a large group reservation during a crazy busy time of year for restaurants. Michael Yang made time for our request and went above and beyond accommodating our party. It was an exceptional experience and the food was wonderful. I was able to introduce many of my friends to Screen Door that night and they all look forward to returning.
Emily Roth
Always a favorite. We had the fried catfish and grits (eggs were a perfect over medium), and the chicken and waffles (always the best mic of sweet and savory) plus two cocktails each and a beautiful fruit plate to share (delicately peeled oranges and red grapefruit segments with perfectly sliced peach and apple plus pomegranate seeds) each, so it was a spendy brunch but always delicious. Our service was impeccable and friendly. The place is loud and bustling, but that's part of the fun. :-)
I love going for dinner also for the catfish, pulled pork, collared greens, cornbread, seasonal veggies, etc. The flavors are always delicious and rich. A Portland favorite that deserves it's reputation for delicious food.
Chantz Spears
Really good fried chicken and waffles. The waffles are sweet potato based giving them a unique twist. Wait times can get long so be comfortable putting your name in early and grabbing a coffee or snack nearby. Lots of waiting seats available though.
Yü Wu
Oh wow the fried chicken waffle is heavenly! The fried chicken is tender and flavorful, the waffle crispy and beautifully made, the syrup appetizing yet not too sweet. Everything is perfect, best fried chicken waffle I ever had! Even for a gourmand like me the 2-piece option seems a lot and very satisfying so I can only imagine 3-piece would be a nice two person meal.
Belinda Appleyard
Excellent meal here for a family gathering of 8. Great service from Mario (and all staff). Excellent atmosphere and good selection of all your favorite comfort foods.
The highlight was dessert: and English Banoffee Pie!
Stephanie Gardea
I got the 1 piece chicken and waffles. I could barely finish, huge portions. Delicious waffles. Waitress was very nice and attentive.
Chris H
Reserved a table for 7:15 and had no issues being seated. Waiter was very nice and warm and refilled waters frequently. I ordered the crispy fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens. Chicken was tender and skin was crispy. Potatoes and gravy were smooth and creamy. Food was fantastic and not too expensive either. We were seated in a covered outdoor area, but it had a heater which was nice. Definitely recommend!
ghin chua
The dining space area was rather tight and noisy for full seating but the fried chicken made up for that!!
Kueiman Lin
I went to Portland for traveling and got fried chicken form this restaurant. I think their fried chicken is the best of I’ve tried in the United States.
Michael Aigner
Southern comfort food executed at a really high level, can't miss the brunch here
Cher B-Rea
Make sure you have reservations and know that everyone is probably just as confused as you are about which line to be in for checking in. The staff are super nice and my coffee was hot, never empty and I always had creamer. I've had the chicken and waffles, very tasty, and chicken was done perfectly. The fried green tomatoes and okra were done to perfection and their praline bacon is to die for. The meat gravy is good and although the biscuit was soft and fresh, it was very dense. They are known for their BBQ but I've had better.. Not that it was bad, by any means, just that they aren't the best I've had. A late lunch means you may miss out on some of the meat choices because once it's gone, it's gone.
Lily Bell
The food was amazing! I had the chicken fried steak. It was crispy and so tasty! I would definitely come back here again. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would! Thank you screen door!
Matt Silvers
We went on a weekday to avoid the weekend brunch crowd. If you go on the weekend there can be a wait.
Portions of food were huge and delicious, the staff were super friendly.
They have a full bar.
Chris Evans
We stopped in for brunch on Sunday. Service was unbelievably fantastic! Amazing chicken and waffles, REAL fried okra, delicious biscuits and gravy. The praline bacon wasn't for me, a lot going on with that. Overall this place was fabulous if a lot crowded.
Richard Stokes
The hostess was most gracious and talked with us and brought us cocktails while we waited.
The food was magnificent.
If given a choice of dishes, the fried chicken was exceptional.
Will definitely be back.
Pamela Slaughter
The food is always great and the service, too at E Burnside, where I have eaten for years.
Online, not so much. I mentioned that the food was delicious, but they didn't deliver my biscuit or make it up to me after I mentioned it (it was an extra $4.95 and I wanted it). They responded by banning me and won't accept my orders anymore online.
Sheila Schlicht
Food and service was excellent as always. Never had anything but the best here.
Joshua Dean
Wow! The fried chicken, the gravy, the waffles…all outstanding! And the service was phenomenal.
Jordan LaFata
This is my go to restaurant for my out of towners. Their chicken is delicious! But where they really win in my book is their sides. The creamiest Mac & cheese, flavorful collard greens and buttery mashed potatoes. The service is amazing! They get super busy with a line around the block, so either get their right when they open at 5pm or a little later in the eve.
Eric Barnes
I don't know who's old Southern Grandma they have working in the kitchen, but this is no joke!. Greens, Fried Chicken, Okra and Red Velvet cake. Everything was on point and worth facing the snow to get that meal. Come with your stretchy pants!
Bret Gold
Great food, great service. Very popular so can be a wait.
Homer Nassar
Good chicken, mashed potato and gravy. My red beans and rice was horrible. To thick, no seasoning, nothing Cajun about them. I left them uneaten, the waiter never asked if there was a problem. I had better beans in Rwanda. Never received the corn bread that comes with the meal. I haven’t eaten there for a while because normally they try to turn tables so fast I feel rushed and never enjoyed my experience. Last night was ok, not rushed too much. I might come back but not for breakfast.
Keegan Burch
Mike is a wonderful manager and took care of my gift card issue. He handled the situation perfectly like any manager should have. Mike was more than generous and took the time to make sure I was all set even when they were very busy. Much appreciated!
Rick Raddue
Screen Door is a Portland staple. I've been here numerous times and always tried to sample other things on the menu, though invariably someone at the table orders the fried chicken, since it is definitely what they are known for.
Their custom mixed drinks are very good, I am a fan of the Kitty Hawk.
Jack Cibor
Best place ever. I wish I could order everything on the menu everytime I go. Hush Puppies, fried chicken, mushroom tart, French toast, Mac and cheese. I think they should have have hash browns though. They could make a mean hash brown.
Trey Ward
The food was great. I had the waffle and chicken. I got a bad vibe from the staff as I had an 8pm reservation. I don't think they were happy much as the restaurant was pretty much empty. Overall good place except that I'll probably visit the restaurant on the east side next time.
Angela Martinez
Now I understand why there is ALWAYS a line at this restaurant. This place is delicious! I got to try a little bit of everyone's order at our table and nothing disappointed. From my hot chocolate to the pecan covered bacon, I enjoyed it all. We ALL did. Definitely not a place I would go to all the time for breakfast since the food here is very heavy on the comfort, and that isn't a complaint. But if you have any friends and family visiting this is definitely a place to take them.
Average Bear
I love the screen door! Their breakfast is absolutely to die for, however, I was not as impressed with their dinner menu. While the lack of diversity was disappointing, I was still very satisfied with my main course and will probably be back in the future. Definitely a classic portland staple.
Onessia Elliott
Great southern food, delicious cocktails, friendly service and a fun place to observe people.
Normally there is a line down the street to get in, so I've never been, but we were seated within 10 minutes without a reservation and had a wonderful meal.
Fal Gal
Loved fried green tomatoes, mac and cheese, chicken and waffles, cheddar chive drop biscuits. Honestly everything we ordered was delicious only thing that was just ok was the catfish but food all around was great. Also, enjoy the original sazerac, and don't tell me what to do drinks.
Katherine
No wait for brunch on a weekday! Highly recommend the chicken and biscuit and the cream soda!
Jarrod McNorvell
Very cool spot. Great food in generous portions. Prices seem fair and you certainly get what you pay for, which is saying something these days. You should definitely check this place out.
McBorgBorg
Lovely brunch for a birthday. Had the chicken 'n waffles for the first time, scrumptious. Love the Southern food menu. Will be back for the shrimp 'n grits and greens.
Seth Purkerson
Never disappointed with the food here and they make a pretty excellent set of breakfast cocktails. Expect a line but if you have a small group (two people or less) and you're okay sitting at the bar you'll get seated much faster.
Jennifer Day
Ridiculously delicious. Nice to see a southern restaurant of this quality here in PDX. Also nice that they’ve got substitutes for all dietary needs. Our group got the sample platter, shrimp and grits, and pecan-encrusted fish. No one ‘wanted to share’. The food is remarkably light feeling...until you eat too much...because you’ll order too much. The portions are pretty sizable, I took half my platter home. But one of the best parts is their super sweet pecan pie with ice cream. We got three separate orders because ‘MINE!’. Mid-range expense, very polite and attentive service, unsure about wait times since we did dinner on a Tuesday. I’ve seen people lined up before. Indoor and outdoor seating. Definitely worth the stop and the hunt for parking.
Tyler Ulferts
Been here a few times and it lives up to its reputation. The food is great, the portions are huge and if you come here a lot you'll put on weight. It's an indulgence, but one I recommend from time to time.
Terra Fenderson
Update: Still phenomenal! Had the Chicken & Sweet Potato Waffle this time. A wonderful flavor combination that will satisfy you with a full day's worth of calories. Perfect for brunch when you've got a full day ahead!
-. . -. . -. . -. .
Incredible food, friendly staff and skilled bartenders. Cute but causal inside. Parties of 6+ can call ahead, which I recommend doing to save time. The wait can be long but once you try their offerings, you will see why. Had the Brandy Milk Punch, coffee, and Bananas Foster French Toast, all of which I highly recommend.
Jenifer Phillips
It was so good! Not super sweet. We also got the chicken & biscuit with pork gravy & fosters French toast. All very good! We will have to come back to try more items.
Ed Cable
Hands down one of the best places for breakfast I've been too. They really elevate each dish and the fried chicken was moist and tender with a great blend of spices along with the sweet potato waffle which accompanied it nicely and a bit more on the savory side. Service was great even though the place was packed.
Michael Roop
Oh my God when I'm in Portland this is my go to place my son lives out here and every time I visit this is one of the place that we come.
The chicken and waffles is off the hook the waffles are made with sweet potato and the chicken is just cooked to perfection Everything is so delicious at this place The staff are outstanding great atmosphere a must try when in Portland
Michael Roop

This review is based on our experience with dinner, not their famed breakfast/brunch. Even at dinner time, if you want to avoid the long lines, either arrive 30 mins prior to opening time (5:30pm) and wait outside on the benches, or show up around 8pm once the rush has died down. Be aware the restaurant gets very crowded and noisy, so if you're claustrophobic you may want to think twice.
We came as a group of 4 adults and 3 children, including one infant. They were very accommodating and provided kids' menus with coloring books. We ordered family style so everyone could try more items and it worked out great: the buttermilk fried chicken was out-of-this-world juicy, with a perfectly crispy, herb-seasoned crust. Mashed potatoes were creamy and smooth. The barbecue plate was stacked with smoky flavorful meat. Cole slaw was fine, not particularly memorable. The cheddar chive drop biscuits, however, were incredible. I wish I had ordered a dozen of these flaky, buttery guys to take home. We also ordered gumbo which came with a scoop of rice to spoon up all the deliciousness. Although we were pretty much stuffed by the end of the meal, we still splurged on a couple slices of pie. These were just as generously portioned and tasty as the rest of the meal.
Tom Ettel
We have heard about this place for years and spotted it while driving around. Not crazy busy fir a Saturday at 11:09 am. It’s set up well for COVID, which is critical right now. We have biscuits and gravy, fried oysters and chicken sammie. Flavors were very good. Black pepper in chicken and crisp cornmeal crust. Neither of us would mind a bit more heat and complexity to breading. Gravy was good with a little heat in the back. Good ratio gravy to meat. Wish they had coffee!
Carl Coppernoll-Houston
I was of the opinion that all fried chicken was the same, delicious but just that. I was wrong. This is the best fried chicken in existence. I can't overstate this. The rest of the menu is great, but the chicken is amazing
Albert Luk
A must visit for the foodie tourist. Recommend: chicken and waffles and the Mac and cheese! Crispy, delicious, and moist, it’s everything you would want in a breaded fried chicken and not overly greasy. Mac and cheese: heavenly, rich and superb. Sweet potato fries: ok. Candied nut crusted bacon; sweet and savoury but heavy on the oil. Overall it is worth the wait and definitely on my list of restaurants worthy of repeat visits.
Christopher Tinio
I came here under the recommendation of my girlfriend's friend. We came here and the food was amazing. Definitely do expect for 4 or more people at least 40-45 min wait. I ordered the fried oyster Benedict with sweet potato fries and OMG this was delicious! The hollandaise sauce they put on is thick and smooth! The fried oysters were delicious! the breading that they user is fantastic. My girlfriend ordered the Fried chicken and waffle and so much flavor. The one thing that I wish that they did was have more crunch on the chicken but everything else was fantastic. The service that we received from the wait staff was fantastic. They definitely care for the people that they serve! Simple yet delicious. Nothing complicated but would recommend this place for anyone living in Portland that has not been or anyone visiting from out of town that is looking for simple breakfast/brunch!!!
Diana Vitela
There is always a waiting list and it’s totally worth the wait. The restaurant is always packed, they have seating outside also. The chicken is always juicy and has just the right amount of kick to it! Sweet potato waffles are to die for! The drinks were great, especially their blood orange mimosa, recommend it! The over all experience was great, the waiters and hostess are always friendly and very helpful.
Robert Van Blake 11
Great southern cooking with some twists. Chicken 🐔 Sandwich is my favorite
steve Okimoto
Food was delicious. Shrimp & grits were to die for. Banana Fosters French toast was also fantastic. Had to try some of the chicken. Got tenders and they were also great. Be prepared to wait but it's worth it.
Andre Harrison
Make sure to ask for description of the foods. There are couple of decent orders and there are some that taste like microwavable boxed food. For example the catfish and fries, the catfish is tasty by soggy. The fries were bland and soggy. There brisket mac and cheese is too creamy with little pieces of brisket. I wouldn't recommend it. Over priced for a walk-up window ordering. Wait time is about 20-30min, place order before picking up.
Brian McAllister
Pretty cool place. I didn't have the fried chicken, but heard that it is amazing. Great vibe, amazing place. Plenty of options at the bar. I'll be back.
Gi Han
Chicken was crispy with just the right amount of breading and seasoning. Not oily or greasy at all. Syrup was still warm and complemented well with the chicken and waffles. The waffles had bits of sweet potato with notes of cinnamon for spices. Delicious.
Wilson Tsang
The wait was over an hour when we arrived around 11:45 am. Thanks goodness there’s a nice coffee shop next door to hang out beforehand which made the wait more bearable.
The du monde coffee is good and not too sweet. We ordered the chicken and waffles which were very good and reasonably priced $20 for three pieces of huge chicken and one waffle. I really liked the shrimp and grits but I wasn’t especially blown away by the scramble.
Really amazing and friendly service, fair prices. I would come back!
Eden N
Tried the chicken burger and fried oysters. PHENOMENAL. We are told that the wait for here usually goes for hours, so definitely consider supporting these guys during the pandemic (and a faster wait time)!
There is an outdoor waiting area and a sheltered outdoor area where you can stand and eat. They serve cocktails to drink while you wait, which are delicious. We got the "dont tell me what to do" and a tequila one (forgot the name), which was delicious. Tequila cocktails tend to get lost behind the tequila, but this was shaken perfectly.
Also.. coleslaw in the chicken burger! Yum!!
Arthur Garcia
Delicious. Got here Monday morning maybe 15 minutes to open and we were in the first seating. The heated outdoor patio is the spot to be. As for the food, amazing. Get the biscuits and gravy with the sausage gravy. I got the chicken and waffles with 2 pieces of chicken. I probably should have stuck with 1. The chicken was crispy and tender and tasted yummy against the waffles. My wife had the shrimp and grits, which she also said was good, but I know she was jealous of my food.
Jamie C
I can't believe I've never reviewed Screen Door before. I've been here a lot of times, for family events, take out, friend dates, actual dates, etc. Even though I live in Seattle now, we have visited to get the COVID take out experience. If you order online through their website you have a 5$ or so service fee which you can put towards a tip instead if you call the store and pay when you arrive.
Screen Door has a reputation for long waits, but is one of the few places that is worth it. The trick is to get your name on the list for a larger party and they'll seat you when they open for parties over 6. They recently lengthened their hours and don't close between meal times anymore. Finally! That was the biggest pain, every time I ended up wanting to go it was always near 2pm.
I do greatly prefer their Breakfast/Brunch to their dinner. Its still good at dinner, but I'm more of a boneless chicken person. I've tried nearly everything on the menu at one point or another and everything is good. 90% of the time I get the chicken and waffles now though, its just too good to pass up, and no where else compares. Also a great reheat, just throw it in your oven or air fryer and its just as good as the day before.
My only complaint is the chairs aren't that comfortable--probably for the best, or people would stay even longer. When people from Portland tell me they've never been I wonder what's wrong with them. Now you can get take out and have virtually no wait. Not as fun as the ambiance, but the food is just as good!
Brandon Arachikavitz
The potatoes are so good!!!!!!
Friendly staff, warm atmosphere, delicious hot coffee, and best of all: amazing food!
Try the Cajun scramble! Just a bit of heat!
Jenny Peng
Waited for about 20mins on a Thursday for lunch, still quite a number of people there at 1:30pm.
Ambiance was great, lots of people there.
I ordered the shrimp & grits. The shrimps were big and fresh, and never have I had cheddar grits.. it was different and yum. You can taste the cheese and bacon in it too, a great mix.
Do not order scrambled for your eggs, very dry and not the best.
Def eat the biscuit, it's not a main focus on the plate, but it was one of the best biscuits I've ever had. A bit toasted on the outside but fluffy in the inside, you won't regret it (don't forget to add butter to it).
The hot links Po-boy was phenomenal. I especially love the home-made hot links, you can taste the spices they added to it. It was spicy in a fun way. The bun was toasted to perfection, with fried onions sandwiched in.
Joel Wright
Fantastic local restaurant with a made from scratch mentality. Screen Door has taken traditional American favorites, added their unique twist, and served up some one of the best dinners we've had in the Portland area. The fried chicken was some of the best I've had.
The dining room is cozy and the service was perfectly paced.
The prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are perfect.
Ryan Carter
It was a little bit of a wait for the food but the servers were very polite and the food 100% worth the wait. Chicken and waffles was amazing and I also got to try the bananas foster which was also just as amazing!!
Z P
Fried chicken for the win. The ranch is some of the best I've had. I ordered the plate which is a good option if you want to try a few things. Ended with the pecan pie. Service was good and prompt considering how busy it was.
Meredith Hansbury
Fried chicken and waffles are incredible- they are the go to if you’ve never been. The hot link breakfast sandwich was spicy and delicious. We also got the strawberry rhubarb bread pudding - which was a great way to wrap up our meal!
Emmitt Joyner
WORTH THE WAIT!!! Portions are very generous, the wait staff was busy but very friendly. Kitchen was pushing out picture perfect plates. Nothing was sloppy and my was wonderful. If you are a bacon fan, you cant skip on the praline covered bacon strips, also the server recommended their Cathead sandwich or chicken and waffles for a reason, but still the choice is yours! This is definitely my go to breakfast/brunch spot next time im in Portland.
Sandra Tena
Casual atmosphere, cute decor. The food was good, but I do feel like ita overhyped. The bacon praline waffle was delicious but the other dishes we ordered were just okay. The whipped cream on the waffle and the hot chocolate was really good. The gravy in the biscuit and gravy dish was good but the biscuit was just okay. The chicken sausage link was super bland. It didn't really taste like anything. The wait time including the time waiting in line and the time waiting to be seated was about an hour. Probably wouldn't wait that long for this place again. Overall the service was good and the food was good it just didn't blow my mind enough to make the wait worth while.
Mark Toledo
I sat at the bar for some gumbo and grits, and I got some of the best food I've had in a long time! Flavorful, garlicky grits with great shrimp, soft and flaky biscuits, and rich gumbo (plenty of rice, the way I enjoy it). Restaurant fills with patrons quickly, but it's clear that they know where to find great southern fare in the NW.
Liz Glazer
Food is delicious and dishes are large enough to share. Had the chicken and waffles and praline bacon. Chicken was moist and the breading has a peppery kick. The bacon should be tried and savored. Overall a wonderful place to eat.
Jodi Seits
We used Screen Door for my mother’s celebration of life, Katie couldn’t have been more helpful in helping me plan food for a very important event. My mother loved her ribs. She helped in picking the appropriate food for an Open House and her assistant Allison set it up and picked up the dishes and equipment. They even supplied take home boxes so our guests could take home food. The food was delicious & held up well, would highly recommend their catering service for any event.
Alma L
This place is hands down one of the best breakfast places I've ever been to! I got the biscuits and gravy with a side of roasted potatoes. The biscuits held up well against the thick and savory gravy without being dry. The potatoes were perfectly crisp with a soft inside and the seasoning had a peppery kick but wasn't overwhelming.
My boyfriend got the fried chicken and biscuit sandwich with scrambled eggs. It was essentially my breakfast but with fried chicken but it made all the difference. It was a perfectly coated and fried chicken breast fillet. The breading wasn't heavy but had a great crunch and it wasn't too salty and it paired fantastically with the sausage gravy.
Last but not least my friend that accompanied us got the chicken and waffles and I was jealous of his food even though mine was just as fulfilling. It had the same large breast piece of perfectly fried chicken but with a sweet potato waffle cut into 4's. This was one of the best waffles I've ever had. It was thick to cut into but upon tasting, it was light and fluffy, almost seeming to melt. It wasn't overly sweet and neither was their syrup so they were a great pair especially with the savory, herby chicken.
Overall, I'd say the prices may seem daunting but you get amazing quality AND quantity on the food and the wait staff was very prompt, quick, and friendly enough for how extremely busy it was.

Excellent food and service. The restaurant is a bit dark, but you can see into the kitchen which is bright. The food is very good. We got the plates where you can choose 3 sides. The portions were huge and the food was very good and well presented. We had a party of 6 and 18 percent tip was pre-added to the bill. The seafood jambalaya was good.

Screen door was a great breakfast spot. You definitely need to plan on a line and dress accordingly. It is worth the wait. Tried 8 dishes altogether at our table, every dish was uniquely it's own. Full if flavor and well done!!!
Seattle Grub
Friendly atmosphere. I got to this place twenty minutes before they opened, and there were already people lining up. And I'd say it was worth the wait. The chicken and waffles I ordered was not only impressive to my taste buds, but also to my eyes. Two giant pieces of beautifully fried chicken stacked on top of a golden waffle, and impaled with a knife. Make sure you take a picture before you dig in. It looks just as good as it tastes.
Arthur Molines
We had a delightful lunch there!
All lot of classic dishes (fried chicken waffle, breakfast egg and potatoes, etc...) very well prepared. The fried chicken is super tasty!
I had a delicious shrimp and grits, very balanced and warm flavors.
Recommend!
We tried their home made pecan candied bacon 🥓. It's something! Not my favorite, the result being too sweet but a fun culinary experiment.
Noureliza Ajana
Great atmosphere and delicious comfort food!
The staff was really friendly. We are visiting from Houston, TX and this was a spot recommended by a friend who lived locally.
On a Wednesday at noon, the wait was not too bad. Waited for about 15 mins.
Chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits are a MUST!!!
Clayton Ketcham
A little expensive, but it is worth the hype. I highly recommend the cinnamon rolls! Also, while there can be lines, it was easy to book a reservation online which I can’t say about every place.
Wallis McMillin
Visited with my friend back in November for brunch and it was a huge highlight of our Portland trip! Waited only 15 minutes to get in which I think is good considering how busy they are. We both had the chicken and biscuits which was amazing, I had cheddar grits and we shared a side of Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was AMAZING! Generous portions and I’d highly recommend.
Brikia C
As we approached the place, straight off the plane, we could see the line of people before the actual building. Luckily it was a holiday, so street parking was free however, the wait was 45 minutes to an hour!
We split the cat face chicken biscuit sandwich, candied pecan bacon, shrimp and grits and pulled pork scramble. The shrimp and grits weren’t the best I’d ever had, but were good. The pulled pork in the scrambled lacked flavor and needed some sauce. The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection and had a golden crispy crunch to it, and the biscuit was moist and soft, making the cat face sandwich the best of the menu items we selected.
Apparently, there are different menu items for non-holidays that we will have to come back and try.
Overall, good food, great coffee and service at Screen Door!
Beth
Always the best always plenty to eat. Not too long of a wait but if you have to it's all worth it. The bananas Fosters was outstanding as was the hush puppies the mac and cheese is divine and the chicken is waffles was as southern as you could get...
Ana Blancas
Very good! The potatoes were amazing must get!!! & the banana French toast! Service was great! Not to mention deep fried okra!
J C
What can I say that hasn’t been said already by others? The best chicken and waffle place I personally vouch for in the US, and the praline bacon will blow your mind. Just those two is enough for two people. I wish this place goes global. Highly recommended.
Rebecca Millner
We went on a Saturday night, so the wait was about an hour for a table. While that wasn’t great, the food more than made up for it. Every single thing was perfect! So ridiculously good! The drinks were strong, the cornbread was amazing, and the orange chocolate pie was inhaled at breakneck speeds. We appreciated all the vegetarian and vegan options on the menu too. I would go back in a heartbeat, even with the lines lol

The pinnacle of Portland breakfast. Most people come here for the fried chicken and waffle, and with good reason. The one piece for the fried chicken and waffle should be enough for most people, but there are options for two or three pieces (which, in my opinion, is more appropriate for sharing in terms of portion size). In my opinion, the fried chicken and waffle at Screen Doors blows away Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle. Not only is the chicken at Screen Door excellent, but I was surprised at how good the waffles were. I didn't get a "dry" sensation with the waffles, and they might have been the best waffles I've ever had in my life. I also tried the Glazed Breakfast Hushpuppies, but wasn't impressed. There's supposed to be a bacon flavor to it, but I didn't really notice it. If I had to choose another starter, I might have gone with the Screen Door Praline Bacon (which looked amazing, but did not get to try). I sat in the bar area, and staff here is great. Be prepared to brave the long lines, though it appears that people dining solo (like me) should be able to find a seat at the bar relatively easily. If you can only make it to one breakfast spot in Portland, make this the one!

Wow are the claims justified! Of the places I've been recommended to visit by multiple friends, all have mentioned Screen Door is a must. The chicken was juicy and crispy, but not too oily and the other dishes were flavorful as well. The collard greens were very salty though.

I mean I don't know to start everything we had was delicious our server and I believe he said his name was Newton he was amazing, always checking on the table making sure we are okay things were alright. He was just amazing the food was amazing I love the atmosphere reminds you of like that southern down home kick back kind of restaurant. I was told to wait would be long but it really was like 20 minutes so not long at all. I also had some smoke chicken wings that was an explosion on my test buds.. I ordered the screen door plate I had to smoke chicken wings the macaroni and cheese and the greens. My daughter had the cheesy grits and shrimp and my other daughter had the cheeseburger.
Grace Hoover
Busy Friday when a friend and I visited, Sat at the bar, and the hibiscus peach tea was delicious. Ryan was a great bartender and paced and anticipated our visit perfectly. The hush puppies are really good.
Amanda Keller
People say it isn't worth the wait but when you go on a weekday and there isn't a crazy long line, it sure is worth it!! It was amazing, got the chicken and sweet potato waffles with a side of praline bacon (recommended by a server) and it was all so yummy. If you have a small appetite, one piece of chicken is more than sufficient. If you're hoping for crispy bacon then look elsewhere but it is scrumptious! Do not skip the chicken and waffles!!! Waitstaff was very attentive and friensly. Our water was never close to empty. Also they have large mimosas...need I say more?
Brianna Gullett
The best burger I've had in a long time! 4 stars on atmosphere because it was pretty loud. The beans and rice were very good tooo!
Vincent Wang
If you ever travel to Oregon for the food. The screen door is a must! Absolutely delicious and the portions are huge. Beware, the line is LONG for the brunch rush. We waited about 40 minutes and were seated outside. The atmosphere was very homey, feels almost like a nice patio setting. The waiter was great! The kids got crayons and a coloring sheet and was very comfortable. When the food arrived, we were famished. The food can only be described as authentic comfort food, pancakes we're yum, chicken and waffles (which they are known for) we're absolute yum, and the grits and shrimp was a double yum. Overall..YUM
Steven K
Busy place. Snowy and cold day but sat on patio anyway to avoid wait for table. Heated from above but still a bit chilly. Street parking can be challenging but we lucked out and found parking block away. Long wait for a table when we finished eating around 10am. We ate lots. French toast, pancakes, sausage scramble, hush puppies, praline bacon. All good but best was French toast and praline bacon.
zachery andrich
Went with fried chicken and waffles. We got lucky and didnt have to wait too long, be prepared for a wait on the weekends. Good prices with some real flavor. The syrup was a little too sweet but the fried chicken was solid. The sweet potato fries were real
Rebecca Hanson-Vazquez
We were there at lunchtime, and the food was great. Service was slow though, and not very attentive. It was also really loud, which is to be expected but made conversation challenging.
Archana Das Stockwell
Fell in love with their blueberry lemon curd pancakes. They're to die for! Absolute care has been made in making the pancakes. They've blueberry stuffed in them through each layer so well that you just keep digging. The waffle and chicken was way more heavy than expected and ended up eating in half way through! A must visit place if you can survive through the wait time :)
Chris Aquino
This is definitely a tourist spot which is a bummer for locals since there was even a wait time on a Tuesday morning. The service was good and the food was great. I had the chicken and waffles and even though it was really good, there were leftovers since it came with so much! We also had the hushpuppies as a starter and those were delicious.
If you have the time, I recommend stopping in, otherwise, there are plenty of other great breakfast/brunch options nearby to try that may not have the same wait time.
Gabrielle Monaco
I ordered the one piece chicken and waffles and a side of cheese grits. Everything was fantastic! It was just the right amount and I even had enough to take home some left overs.
The chicken was phenomenal. The batter had lots of pepper in it and was crispy! The waffles were more dense but not too sweet and went perfectly with the chicken. The grits were good, too!
Vananh Vuong
Come right after it is opened and only 15-20min wait when full party. When we left around 11sth AM, +20 people were lining up and waiting way out the door. Excellent southern comfort food, huge menu. Recommend order to share as portion is very generous. Worth the Portland brunch destination!
Sean McConnell
Such great southern food! We usually get hush puppies and/or fried okra, the hush puppies really stand out as being great. The fried chicken, shrimp & grits, and brisket are our usual entrees. Any one of those are so so that's good. Cocktails are good, and they have something like 6 beers on tap.
Mack Pines
Anyone who lives in the Portland area has to eat at Screen Door at least once for some
good old fashoined southern comfort food.
Weather you go for brunch or dinner, the fried chicken is legendary! Absolutely delicious coating and tender juicy chicken.
The hushpuppies were the best I've ever had and were fried to perfection; their chive drop biscuits were amazing as well.
Every single item I ordered was delicious.
The super friendly service adds to the experience.
I highly recommend Screen Door.

Deliciousness for the soul. Ordered the chicken and waffles, Praline bacon, Oyster breakfast po-boy, biscuits and gravy with roasted potatoes, glazed hush puppies, and for dessert a spiced apple bread pudding with the canal street coffee. The chicken and waffles are a must try. The chicken was juice but crispy and waffle was fluffy and flavourful. The THICK cut Praline bacon was worth every penny. The oyster po-boy was a Titanic of the sea honed in by the wonderful garlic spread and thick cut bacon. The smoked cheddar really pops in the hush puppies with a subtle hint of bacon. The gravy on top of the biscuits was so rich in flavors while being light and creamy. I'm a potato freak and couldn't help but fall in LOVE with the crispy yet soft and perfectly seasoned roasted potatoes. And for the finale the warm comfort of the bread pudding contrasted by the spiced apples and topped with whipped cream just put me at home by the fireplace on a cold day. Simply delicious! 4.9🌟

We stopped by on a quick trip to Portland. We arrived around 5:00 pm on a Sunday and discovered it opened for dinner at 5:30. At this point, there was already about 25 people waiting to get in at 5:30, so apparently arriving early is a good idea. The locals said this was pretty normal. The food was really good basic southern food. The menu was simple and had a great choices. We started with the shrimp and grits appetizer and it was pretty good. Not the best I’ve had, but still good. We had the bbq combo with brisket and pulled pork (came with Texas, Carolina, and Mustard bbq sauces) and it was very good. Nice and moist with good flavors. We Also got the fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy. This was pretty good too. The chicken was very moist and the breading was flavorful and crisp. I would have liked It a little crispier. The herbs used gave it good flavor but made it different than most of the traditional southern chicken I’ve had in the past. We finished our meal with the berry shortcake (a seasonal offering) and it was super good. Freshly made whipped cream and very tasty berries. The best part for me was the very light as yummy shortcake. Definitely better than most. All and all, I would definitely recommend this place and I would go back my next visiting Portland.
Austin T
I got the chicken and waffles and enjoyed it. The waffle was different than you would expect, and I would have to describe it as a “wheat waffle.” It had the flavor of wheat bread. The service is friendly even though it is busy. The macaroni and cheese looks delicious but it wasn’t quite as good as I thought it would be, it was missing something. The fried chicken was definitely the star of the show
Janet
Wanted to try this place since it was rated very highly and on a few blogs. It did not disappoint! The chicken was really good. It was crunchy not soggy, tasteful not plain and paired great with the waffle.
The praline bacon wasn't bad.
Also, the hot sauce in the unmarked bottle is 🔥! I love spicy food and it wasn't too spicy but had a great flavor and kick.
Stacy Lee Ferguson
The Screen door was absolutely fabulous! The staff was super friendly and just awesome. And the food and drinks were out of this world. Place was packed and since we called ahead, they don't take reservations, we got our party of 8 seated. I had a Rosalita drink and it was phenomenal! And then had the bbq brisket, according and cheese and a bowl of gumbo. Oh man, I am stuffed and it was simply delicious. The mac and cheese was creamy and the top crusty and just to die for. I would highly, and I can't express enough, I would highly recommend the Screen door if you are in Portland. One of the best meals I have ever had!!!
Yashom B
One of the best restaurants I've been to. I was in town for work from Seattle and was totally blown away by what they have to offer. Authentic and delicious southern style food. The smoked brisket just melted in my mouth and the special scallops with creamy greens were hands down the best scallops dish I've had.
Adam Silbernagel
The place was jumping when we arrived which is always a good sign. It certainly was in this case because the food was well worth the short wait. I highly recommend the fried chicken and waffles, but the chicken sandwich and mac n' cheese are also crazy delicious. Great service and a fun atmosphere. Definitely a must visit if you're in Portland!
David Gelb
This was my first time here and I took my order to go. Their fried chicken and mashed potatoes were delicious!! The hush puppies were also excellent amd their sweet iced tea was perfect! I called my order in ahead and still had to wait for it when I arrived to pick it up, so the service was a little slow, but the food more than made up for the wait!
Nočnica Fee
Still serving a great meal after years as a Portland staple. Well staffed with experienced front of house. Delicious food.
Kyle Gibson
We arrived at 5 p.m. to a short line of people waiting in front of us. Once we got in we were given a nice booth and our server greeted us with menus and took our drink orders. We each got different meals shrimp and grits the hamburger, and to screen door plates which you're able to mix and match different items from the sides menu. Everything was delicious and the service was great as always.
Logan Compton
Outstanding food, super friendly staff, and a very cool, welcoming ambiance. I will definitely be coming back here next time I'm in Portland!
Fiona Carroll
It was a long wait but it was worth it! The food was amazing and the people were very nice! I had the Traditional Eggs Benedict and it was beyond perfection. The inside was very soothing and very homely, I was on the patio which had heaters which was great because it was cold. Overall great experience and I highly recommend!
Christina Jackson
Decided to brave the line for my birthday brunch and I wasn’t disappointed! I sipped on the Du Monde coffee cocktail while they speedily brought us our food. The praline bacon waffle is magical. It’s yeasty so it’s got a good malty flavor that blends well with the praline, bacon, and syrup. They gave me a candle which I blew out happily.
My friend got the cathead biscuit—basically a glorious chicken biscuit with gravy. So good. The bottom biscuit was flakier so it didn’t get soggy. It came with cheddar grits and I got an extra side of eggs. Nailed it.
Zarah P
Went to breakfast on a weekday, arrived before 9am and there was no line. Ordered a blood orange mimosa, pecan bacon waffle, & the fried chicken and waffle - it was all delicious! Servers were really nice & attentive. A relaxing & casual breakfast.
D Y
I never get tired of their fried chicken! The lineup gets long in a hurry. Good idea to go ahead of opening times by at least 30mins. Staff are all first class. Whenever we visit Portland, this place is a must!
Michele Shaw
Everything we had was delicious! The chicken and waffles was amazing and the bacon is worth a try but very sweet and sugary. Definitely come here with an empty stomach as it’s super filling! Not bad pricing either. Super long wait on weekend so I’d try to go during the week
Svea Poulsen (Sveava)
I for the veggie hash which was a great meal!! Not a huge portion which is what I was looking for that day! I also tried a bite of my friends chicken and waffles which was so darn tasty! That chicken was moist and the batter was full of flavour. Servers were so friendly and helpful with the menu!
Ellie Voelker
All I can say is WOW! Friends had told us to come here for breakfast, so we did and now we know why! The service was excellent, with very friendly staff. We were seated right away in a cozy booth and served tea and coffee. Highly recommend the waffle if you are looking to indulge in a treat. Such great flavors all around, we will definitely be back.
Amir Shargh
Yeah, it's that good.
Simple menu. Great execution.
A very casual atmosphere.
Southern style cooking and great desserts.
It's not fancy. But it is great food and very relaxed style

I'm not one to buy into the hype of overwhelmingly good reviews, and judge places on their own merits. That said, this place is outstanding. Went there for the first time a couple of days ago with friends and tried to order a wide variety of breakfast items. Now I have never understood the concept of chicken and waffles for breakfast, but damn,.. this place made me a believer. I don't know about other places, but the combination of the spices on the chicken with the mild sweetness of the waffles and maple syrup just made my tastebuds sing. The hot chocolate was outstanding and obviously homemade, not just an off the shelf mix, and the praline bacon was an excellent surprise. Be care full though, the bacon and hot chocolate are very sweet, so be ready to share. I will say that the eggs Benedict were good, however wasn't as mind blowing as the other items. Yes, the wait was long. We got there before they opened on a Sunday morning and there was already a line around the corner. That said, they do a good job getting people in the door or on a list so you can relax and mill around. They also offer coffee and drinks inside.
Just go,.. it will become your new favorite breakfast place.
Gabby Gonzalez
Waited an hour to be seated but definitely worth the wait!! Chicken and waffles with a regular waffle was out of his world. Praline bacon was good to try for the experience, would've liked it crunchier though. Blood orange mimosa was great too! Can't wait to come back!!!
Sheila Harjani
Best chicken and waffles! And praline bacon? Shouldn't miss this smoked bacon with roasted pecans, brown sugar and cayenne.
Cozy place with amazing comfort food and friendly service. A must-visit when in Portland.
Grace Pinter
Oh my, where do I even start with this. Screen Door has always been the top restaurant recommended by friends for when I visit Portland so naturally it was one of the first places I wanted to eat at when I arrived. Needless to say, this meal was one of my favourite during my trip. My party was very lucky to arrive and be seated right away. Granted, we went on a weeknight around 8pm. We shared an appetizer and also ordered the shrimp and grits, the buttermilk fried chicken (of course) and a side of corn bread. The chicken was so crispy on the outside yet moist on the inside! The shrimp and grits had so much flavour as well. We were stuffed coming out of this meal and had to pack the leftovers. You must come here if you're looking for homey southern cooking!
Nora G.
Wow! Love their breakfast and lunch options! Delicious! Very good southern cooking! I can't wait to try dinner! We'll be back! Thanks guys! :))
Sharon McElroy
Yum! Everything on my plate was hot and tasty. Great bloody Mary. Outstanding service. A very Portland experience.
Jeremiah Brooks
For my people, I will let you know that finding good soul food can be hard especially on the west coast. This is a great diverse atmosphere with AMAZING food. 10/10
Tim Li
As a Portlander, how can you never been to Screen Door. Here we come today. One hour+ waiting outside, 30min+ waiting after placing the order. The food was good but not as good as I thought (my high expectation), because it's way too famous I guess.
4-star for food, 3-star for the overall experience.
Navin Sadarangani
This place was packed. We went here for 11 am on a Sunday morning and had to wait 80 min for a table. Yup, min wait time is around an hour. But people do wait to get their chance to eat here. Just like us. The food was pretty good. We had the vegetable hash and the egg sardou. The eggplant Mashup was great in the veggie scramble, and the potatoes were very well done. I liked the egg sardou much better. The cheesy grits too were good. Nice place. Good vibe. But just coz of the long wait, I'm not sure I'd go back here coz it's not something to die for. Just another good brunch joint I'd say.
Richard Phan
Had some really delicious fried chicken here and the seasoning is just perfect. If you enjoy big pieces of chicken to go along with fluffy waffles, then this place is for you. Their portion sizes are also very hearty.
Herakles Li
The wait for two people was an hour on a Sunday at 11 a.m. And it was completely worth the wait. We are talking about the kind of place you make a drive from Seattle to Portland just to eat at. The food was good and incredibly filling. Had the chicken and waffles and it alone probably could have fed two people. Had the hush puppies and they were on point. We also had a special pork belly eggs benedict and I don't think I have ever had a better egg's benedict in my life. I have talked about these eggs benedict at every brunch I've been at since. That's how good they were.
And to top if off the service was nothing short of stellar, the server noticed that the potatoes were a tad overcooked and came back to check if we wanted new potatoes, I politely said they were adequate but he could tell I wasn't enthused as the rest of the meal so he brought me new potatoes anyway. That level of service alone is worth 5 stars. A great experience, as long as you are prepared to wait.
Jasmine Rosario
Stop what you’re doing right now and eat breakfast here. This was the best breakfast I have ever had. Ever.
The chefs are obviously experienced and the servers were on top of it! We hardly had to wait for a table, and honestly everything we tried was great from the food to the coffee. I kind of.. broke a cup of coffee accidentally (sorry about that!) and the server quickly and efficiently cleaned it, gave us more coffee, and made us laugh about it.
We had the chicken waffles, the praline bacon (if you can eat bacon this side is a MUST!), and the biscuit and gravy. The hype is real guys, you have to try this place out!
Vivian Dang
It is a bit of a long wait but definitely worth it. Hands down this is the best fried chicken and waffles I’ve ever had. I tried some of my friend’s praline bacon too, and that was delicious as well. I will definitely come back here the next time I visit Portland.
Netia Shores
I'm from Memphis TN and I can tell you first hand that this fried chicken is heavenly. You will not regret it! It was crispy, had excellent flavor, and super juicy. The mashed potatoes were the perfect match for this delicious chicken. I didnt have the gravy on the mash potatoes. They were super fresh and creamy as is.

As good as ever, week day breakfast stop with work associate, we each had the exquisite Huevos Rancheros, ever so smoky from the beef brisket, a lovely side of fruit, Creole Bloody Mary, and for dessert a heavenly pillow of Strawberry Shortcake--I swear that shortcake biscuit would have floated off the table if not held down by berries and whipped cream, it was sooo light and fluffy. It is so hard to go wrong here (I arrived 8:45 and was seated immediately; on leaving around 9:50, the Screen Door scrum was in full swing, sigh.)
Return August 17, 2017 8:30 a.m. Seated with no wait at a window table, super prompt and friendly service throughout. I enjoyed the seasonal specials: fresh NW Blackberries, and an herbed feta frittata with cherry tomatoes and fresh basil, new pics added. Great breakfast at Screen Door again.
Return visit Dec. 4, 2017, 8:15 a.m., no wait, and none when I finished at 9:20. I enjoyed the vegetable-bacon 3 egg frittata with a micro green salad on top, cheddar grits and wheat toast. All were excellent, the only distraction was the wailing of a toddler, very unhappy about something, or everything. Kid's got the pipes for Carnegie Hall, and he had down pat the part about "practice, practice, practice"! Go, kid, you will make it some day. Frittata pictured below.
2.14.17. I returned for a nice breakfast on my birthday, it was a solo visit and was unfortunately a very sad experience. I arrived around 8:45 and was promptly seated. I was quickly provided with water and coffee. After that I somehow became completely invisible. Seriously, I could not get the attention of any wait staff to place my food order for 20 minutes, Bend actual 20 minutes by my watch. I observed the single Diner next to me have her order taken and delivered, and a party of eight Seated on the other side of me and have their order taken all the while I kept trying to get a server's attention even waving my menu in the air. I did finally get to place my order after never even having my coffee refilled during that hiatus. The food was delivered promptly after ordering, but my coffee was again not refilled and I waited, waited and waited some more and only when I got up and began to approach the coffee pots at the service station that a server said he would get me another cup of coffee. That was the last cup of coffee that I got. The photos I posted four of my half finished main dish because I was so God damn mad so I just didn't feel like eating much anymore. I finished my very nice fruit plate, paid my bill, tips my usual 25% and got the hell out of there. I was so terribly terribly disappointed and what is usually and all around five star experience. This was just a complete complete bust. I don't know what went wrong, but it just sucks all around.
Brianne LaBuda
We came here for breakfast early on a weekday, and were fortunate to not encounter the wait times so many reviews have mentioned. Our server was super sweet and very helpful.
I had the fried chicken biscuit sandwich and my husband had the Alabama scramble. We both agreed that my sandwich was the "winner" of the two dishes, the sausage gravy was excellent and the fried chicken was executed very well. That being said, our favorite thing from the meal was the cheddar grits. They were creamy and flavorful and I wish I could have them every day.
Decor is very charming and the bottomless coffee is also very good.
Ron Weaver
Valarie was our server and was amazing. She's so sweet. The food was amazing. I had the biscuits and gravy and the gravy was "OFF THE CHAIN!" highly recommend. We waited 90 mins but worth it..
Iris
Heard great things from friends(they had the chicken and waffles) and reviews. Was excited to go. Me and my grandpa both agreed, just meh☹ over priced and below average portions. Don't know why such good reviews, maybe we aren't yuppy enough. We were very disappointed, my grandpa always cleans his plate, even at Otis, which if you know have legendary large portions. And if I have leftovers,he finishes those as well.ha. well we both had leftovers, we hope the homeless we gave them to enjoyed them,we didn't even want them. So so disappointing. We are not picky eaters And We enjoy trying new things, not sure why or what happened.
Lynn Quan
Yes, the wait it long but is it worth it? Yes! We were a party of 3 and were lucky enough to dine for brunch on a weekday with only a 15 min wait. Other times I've been it was about 45 mins ti 1hr+ wait. We ordered a salad with blue cheese crumbles, pecan praline bacon, side of mac and cheese with fried chicken and waffle to share. We ordered an extra piece of chicken and each had one with 1/4 of the waffle and it was a perfect amount. The chicken quality was really great, fresh, juicy with crispy fried skin. I also recommend the shrimp and grits dish and for dinner the fried catfish with a side of collard greens and mac and cheese. Screendoor southern style food is a must when visiting Portland!
Ahmed Sdir
There is a long wait to get a table for Saturday breakfast. I had the Huevos Rancheros and coffee. Food in general was good. Not much to say about the service, they were very busy so the server barely stop by our table. Most options on the menu are chicken related. I had a bite of the fried chicken sandwich and it was very well seasoned. Waffles are good too.
Kessashun Arthur
I was visiting Portland and decided to do my customary Sunday Brunch here. The menu is filled with amazing options, making it hard to settle on just one thing. Their chicken and waffles and praline bacon seem to be the crowd favorites, and I was very impressed after trying both. The dishes have an incredible balance between sweet and savory, not allowing sugar to overwhelm at all. There's tons of great flavor and a little spice to their fried chicken. Visiting Screen Door for brunch is definitely a commitment, as you can expect to wait at least an hour for a table, but for such high quality food, it's definitely worth it every now and then!
Kamari Monique
Today was my first time coming to the screen door and I’ve always heard good things about this restaurant so I was super excited to see what the hype was about. It was one of the best breakfasts ever. I ordered the chicken and waffle and the chicken had the best crunch and season. The waffles were fluffy and delicious. I made sure to tip because the customer service was phenomenal. Most definitely will be visiting again.

Had this place on my list of places to go for brunch, but decided to come here for dinner instead. I was afraid that it wouldn’t be as good because all the reviews indicated that breakfast was the popular time to go here. I ordered the BBQ plate and buttermilk fried chicken. It was absolutely delicious. I’ll just have to come here for breakfast another time.
Jennifer Truc Ly Le
One of my favorite places in Portland for brunch!!! It is not overrated, but the wait definitely is. I always choose to go super early when they open or at a time they won't be busy which is usually after lunch on weekdays. Always have to have their chicken and waffles. Their special, the salmon cakes benedict didn't disappoint either. If you're new to Portland you have to try this place!
Noah Katterman
Top tier food for a great price. The meat (fried chicken, pulled pork and brisket) are all fantastic. Highly recommend! Also the servings are literally perfect.
Charles C
This place gets quite busy and there is a line up to get in. The food is quite good and the ambience is nice. Chicken and waffles seems to be a staple here and it didn't let me down. I also had the oyster po' boy sandwich which I also enjoyed. I'd certainly recommend for anybody passing through Portland.
Kev Fong (Kevy)
I think it’s a brunch spot definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area. My friends and I weren’t too blown away by anything but it was still a hearty and delicious meal.
Courtney B
Cute little spot, bustling but no wait on a Wednesday morning. The chicken and waffles are 10/10 and so was the service- sidenote, I would have been just fine with the one piece chicken but went for the 2 piece and it was more than enough. Excellent!
Carroll Throw
Amazing place! Food was outstanding! Attentive and friendly staff! So glad we found this place during stay in Portland!
Clove Wetch
Amazing cajun food. One of my favorite restaurants of all time. I've been here several times now and have loved everything I've tried. They always have delicious specials too. The service is very good, especially considering it's always packed. The rotating local veggie menu is fantastic for vegetarians in your party.
Arjuna Hayes
Chicken and waffles was quite tasty - the waffles are pretty unique and definitely worth trying. Shrimp and grits was dece, but not sure if I'd order it again. Really nice staff and a good atmosphere make it a place I'd love to visit again!
Chris Smith
I love places like this that do their own thing and do it great. The wait is brutal but worth it. The food is huge and delicious and the servers are helpful and friendly. When I leave a place wanting to keep coming back until I've sampled the entire menu, that's a really good thing. I had to go with the Chicken and Waffles because I love that dish and since chicken is what they're known for, that's where I needed to start. I nearly got sidetracked by the Huevos Rancheros though. I have a massive soft spot for that dish and I really want to see how they do it.
I saw a guy eating the chicken and waffles at another table and he had ordered a side of country gravy and an egg which he had poured over the top of it. He also had a side of cheesy grits he was eating with it as well. I liked where this guy's head was at so I decided to give that a try myself. That dude was a genius because doing it that way kicked the whole meal up a couple of notches for me. Their country Gravy is cracktastic and those cheesy grits were so good. The place was packed and we ended up sitting on the patio under a heat lamp, which was fine by me but I'm not sure my wife loved that. She did love the food though. She had Biscuits and Gravy and, as I mentioned, the gravy is excellent. I'm definitely looking forward to my next trip to Portland!
Ryan
Waited 1 hour outside. Got our table. Waited another hour inside for our food. Still haven't received anything from the chefs. I think they're playing Mario Kart in the back. Enjoy this picture of our lonely cups of water and a slowly melting candle.
Update:
Got our food. The gluten-free vegetarian menu was atrocious. Not worth the wait. Burger and trout was pretty good.

Chicken and waffles alongside the Eggs Benedict seem to be the most popular items. A majority of items being delivered were between those two. If you bring a friend or friend(s), I highly recommend ordering the 3 piece chicken and waffles, then splitting the chicken. They're pretty solid and large for the price so it's well worth it. Chicken is crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. It's not the best I've had, but it's of solid quality. I'm a huge eater and the 2 piece filled me up a bunch. The waffle was fairly crispy as well, definitely not soggy and held up with the chicken and syrup.
Luckily, we didn't have to wait at all. We came in and were asked if we had a reservation which meant there could be a wait, but our server said "no worries I have a seat for you" and we were seated promptly. Great spot for breakfast, but also seems like an amazing spot for any other meal. Looking forward to revisiting.
Li Westenfelt
The best chicken& waffles 🧇 that I have ever had! The seasoning is just perfect! The staffs are always friendly and courteous! Love 💕 love this place! …
Sangita Mohanty
OMG! Food is delicious,I would recommend everyone to come this place if you are visiting Portland. I would recommend biscuits and chicken with mushroom gravy, waffle and chicken ,fried oysters, fried okra..love the place staff are super friendly.
Celine Farrimond
Really great service here. Would recommend coming on a weekday to avoid crowds. A little loud inside but not bad even with a packed room. Good coffee as well. Pictured is the chicken and waffles with one piece. Waffles were delicious and everything was perfectly portioned. Can't wait to come back!
Jack Bairamian
So there’s usually a line outside the door of this place for good reason. The food is just really good. All handcrafted southern goodness. Couldn’t resist the chicken and waffles. Tender and perfectly seasoned chicken with sweet potato waffles and side of hush puppies. Carb goodness. They’re bloody’s are amazing as well...handcrafted bar mix. Highly recommend!
Madi
Great fried chicken large enough to share for two. Delicious and fresh lemon slaw. Excellent honey mustard and Parm aoli.
Spencer Hundreds
Absolutely one of the best breakfast places I’ve had in the past decade. There will be a wait, it’s on average, 30 minutes. There’s an great coffee shop next door and there’s plenty to see on a short stroll through the neighborhood while you wait.
The restaurant is busy, it’s always moving and there’s always people coming in.
We shared an order of hush puppies thay came out screaming hot, and were perfectly fried. I opted for the Alabama scramble, hearty and very filling! My partner had the biscuits and gravy, a recipe I swear they’ve copied from the South. The ingredients were very fresh, the service was fast and efficient overall a well run restaurant with amazing food! Definitely check it out!
Lori Hollen-Morey
We sure did miss eating at the restaurant through covid! We did take out a few times over the last 2 years, but it just isn't quite as good. We sat outside in the covered area and felt very comfortable with the heaters above the table. All of the staff were masked and exceptionally polite. The food was absolutely delicious for all 3 of us, not one complaint! We left full and happy. If you enjoy well-cooked Southern food, go! You won't regret it! 😊

There is a reason Screen Door is on every "must visit when in Portland" list. The menu is packed with rock-solid comfort food. It's always busy but the kitchen is on point. I ordered the lauded Chicken & Waffle (made even more delicious thanks to the addition of sweet potato BTW) and it was perfection. Piled high with crispy and juicy chicken, I just had to take a picture. Add a Blood Orange Mimosa and you are set for the day!
Brian Dugas
Had the single chicken and waffles and it was easily the best chicken and waffles I have ever had, hands down. Service was great. Sat at the bar and also got to watch the bartender work her magic sending out drink after drink. If you are ever in the Portland area, definitely come here. It is worth the wait.
Michael Barto
Excellent food and friendly service. Some form of fried chicken here is a must.
aimee dardis
Not your typical fair. Great food. Loved every bite.
Jorn Lundin
Great southern food and awesome service. Highly recommend the catfish, the grits and the ribs. This is a place that you want to come back to again and again. Also make sure you book a table during the busy hours. Thank you!
Shriti Pradhan
The chicken and waffles and french toast with bananas were amazing! The fried chicken was cooked perferctly, not too dry and delicious. The frenchtoast was not too sweet and just perfect with the bananas and whipped cream!
Atinna Smith
Visited Portland and Screen Door for the first time last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it! The place is super popular so you must arrive early to get a seat. My party of three arrived right at 5:30pm on a Sunday, and there was already a line forming outside. The Screen Door plate was great and the sweet tea is superb! For an appetizer - try the fried okra. Everything we had tasted super fresh and was seasoned well. The decor and atmosphere transport you to another place. It's intimate yet lively at the same time...truly charming! If you haven't yet been to this small piece of Southern/Creole heaven, don't hesitate and longer. I highly recommend it!
Danelle Baar
Despite being busy, we were able to sit right away. Service was friendly and quick. Bloody Mary had some heat but was very good. I had chicken and waffles, which I highly recommend! I got the one piece and it was still more than I could eat. Very fair pricing as well.
Zeb Greenfield
Every time I go to Portland I have to go to the Screen Door. Sitting outside while waiting is worth the smells. Definitely try to make reservations or you’ll be waiting a while.
Amy Trampush
Great Southern food with local organic veggie side dishes, excellent drinks. We like the smoked fried chicken drumsticks and mashed potatoes with gravy. There is a wait most nights but not too bad usually.
j spain Greene
Everything good you hear about Screen Door is true. This Portland institution is a must-try-to-stop every time we visit town, which is several times a year - and in a city with the restaurant riches of Portland, that is saying something!
Fabulous Fried Chicken. Fluffy biscuits. Perfect Fried Oysters. Unctuous Grits. The Bananas Foster French Toast is addictive.
Three cautions for those visiting for the first time:
- Parking is tough, so plan for that - you may have to walk a ways (if anyone in your party has mobility issues, drop them off)
- There can be a bit of a wait - but even if there's a line, check. They flip tables fast!
- The bathroom line can be long. If you at all think you need to make a trip - go immediately.
sean kp
words cannot do this food justice... stop reading this and go eat at Screen Door ASAP! Highly recommend the chicken and waffles or the catfish sandwich! 👍🏾
Loren Brinley
Always great experience going to Screendoor, unfortunately doesn't happen often anymore since I live in Florida. Was a much needed stop while in Portland!!!
Hannah Orse
This place was solid. It had a wonderful atmosphere and eclectic menu. Texas veggie migas wasn't great in my opinion, but I would go back and try something else. However, their hot chocolate was the best I've ever had--its what I imagine those kids on the Polar Express drank.
Kim Lechelle
What!!!! The Chicken & Waffles is what I ordered. I could not understand why they offer 1, 2, or 3 pieces of chicken. Well, I do now! That chicken is FIRE, delicious, crispy, crunchy and more. The waffles are also good!!! They are spiced differently than your normal waffles, which makes them tasty. I keep thinking about that chicken.
deb przepasniak
I had a gift certificate that I was holding on to for a few months, and finally used it today and got the catfish sandwich to go. It came with pickles and coleslaw on the sandwich, and a side of fries. I had to work on the sandwich with a fork before I could pick it up, but it was really good. The fries were not great, so one star off for that. The staff and Covid protocols were on point.
The People Vs Marc Dillon
The food was incredible. First time visiting Portland. Definitely digged the hipster vibe in this place.
Dan Best
Great vibe. Southern focused brunch menu
Food and staff are amazing. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the fried chicken was moist and delicious. This place is very busy give time for service
Marilyn Williams
Wheelchair guest! We love Screen Door Eastside. I know it is the law to have wheelchair accessibility but when faced with the need it can be challenging. We called ahead and asked about a reservation to accommodate a wheelchair and of course they said yes. The hostess and staff could not have been more helpful and welcoming. The food is always great ! The staff superb !! Kudos to you all!
Brandon Armstrong
I could not believe how good the fried chicken was, and the grits were just like my mom used to make. The hot sauce they make is unreal I will be buying a bucket of it as so as they sell it.
Aiste Plechaviciute
Very nice Southern food restaurant. All dishes that we had were fresh and full of flavors. Nothing fancy, but cozy and comforting place with friendly and professional waiters.
Jo L
Best buttermilk fried chicken and brisket! Chicken was battered just right and super juicy and tender. Brisket was tender and tasty. Just melts in the mouth. Came here on Monday night so there was no lineup. Would definitely come back for more!
Sherry T
Went with the family for brunch, and everything was so yummy! Would definitely go back, and highly recommend!
Jayme Cloninger Nalty
Wow. One of the best meals we’ve had in Portland.
Incredibly tasty. Loved the combo of sweet potato waffle with the fried chicken.
SO much food. We could only eat half and just saved it for our lunch.
Such a good decision!
Thomas Turniawan
Showed up 10 minutes before lunch closed, and thought we'd be super rushed.... restaurant was still full. haha.
Had the chicken and waffles. Very tasty. The batter for the chicken was very good. Big chicken breast portions though. My girlfriend had the fried oyster sandwich, and said it was the best fried oysters she had ever had.
Mik Hunt
I finally sucked it up and waited in line to try Screen Door. It was FANTASTIC. Plan to wait no less than an hour and grab a cup of coffee to help with the wait. I had the chicken n waffles and added the praline bacon to it. It was delicious. I also had to try the biscuits and gray because that is my go to breakfast dish. But I must say, when you have something like praline bacon chicken n waffles right next to it, it just doesn’t stand a chance! Not to say it wasn’t good because it was! We also had the brisket hash and the special eggnog cocktail. Well worth the wait.
Enton Lok
Best chicken and waffles in town in my opinion. Worth the wait.
Cassie Miller
Veggie Hash and Fried Green Tomatoes 💚
Kevin Meadors
Phenomenal! Chicken and waffles to die for! And a great value. Dined in, sorta. It was a nice day and we sat on the patio. They seem to have a pretty good process for reopening and supporting seating that's available.
Trevor Prosser
Okay, so you know by now that it's delicious but busy, right? There are a thousand reviews that rave about the place, and another thousand that complain about the popularity. But I wanna talk about those portions! My gawd, that fried chicken biscuit filled me up for the rest of the day! It may not look so big, but it was a massive amount of food, packed into a deceptively tiny (but delicious) breakfast.
Tameca Adams
The staff was willing to accommodate my dietary needs without charging me extra. I have an insulin resistance and they cut out the potatoes and gave me extra eggs. So kind of them food was great as well as cocktails!
Emily Ling
Chicken and waffles were insanely good!! Nice and peppery breading, and sweet potato pancakes gave a unique flavor! Blood orange mimosa was fantastic, too. Crowded, as expected, but deserves the hype. Everything on the brunch menu sounded fantastic - very difficult to decide, and I will definitely be back for more!
Update: I’ve been back for more and still loving it! Shrimp and grits were great, too! And the Fall brunch specials were phenomenal!
Mona
Do get the chicken and waffles! Chicken has a nice crunch and spice to it and waffles are made with sweet potatoes and a hint of cinnamon I think. Tasty!
Ethan Maffey
This place never disappoints. Known for the chicken and waffles, there isn't a poor choice on the menu. Pictured here is the Cathead sandwich. Cocktails are great too. Try the praline crusted bacon for a special taste or really satisfy your sweet tooth with bananas foster French toast.
Andrew Whitley
Absolutely delicious!!! I got the huevos rancheros and they were spicy enough but all the meat and egg flavors came through amazingly!!
Hannah Finegan
Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The best breakfast on portland. I'm pretty sure my heart shed light years worth of tears when the chicken and waffles were finished. You must get them. I'll be coming back FOR SURE. Also, blackberry lemonade was BOMB.
Aaron Beck
What an amazing experience. I came with a group of co workers not really expecting to sit next to them and they were able to sit our party of 16 all by each other last minute. Amazing service. Will 100% recommend to anyone in Portland.
Cindy Lo
Great food! Loved the waffled and the blood orange mimosa. One hour wait but you could just put your name down and walk around then come back.
Al Castro
First timers and I gotta say the southern themed dishes were on point. I got the huevos rancheros and my gal got the fish and grits. The rib meat on the eggs was tasty but the salsa and cream sauce on top took the cake. Fish was light and delicious as well. Grits had the perfect consistency and flavor was very good as well. We'll definitely stop by again
Patrick Pan
Loved it! The chicken sandwich and friend oysters/tenders/catfish were awesome!
Daniel Du
If you thought you knew fried chicken and waffles, think again. The chicken was amazingly juicy and the sweet potato waffles really came through. The sweet potatoes offer a unique twist and are especially pleasing when contrasted to the savory flavor of the chicken. The chicken itself has a great balance of flavors without going too far in the spices department. If you have the time, definitely drop by. There will be a line to wait in, but it is well worth it. The portion sizes are also huge.
Dan G.
Pretty damn busy! Got there half hour before they opened to find a manageable line. By the time we went in it was halfway down the block. Food was worth the wait. Be sure to consult your doctor before you eat here. See the pictures.
Travis Wong
Good brunch spot with big portions. You will need to wait for a table fyi.
Chicken and waffles seems super popular.
Patrice E
Great food, atmosphere, and service. We arrived at 7:15 and were seated within 3 minutes. We got to drinks that tasted great and definitely did not skimp on the alcohol content. We ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, and the fried pork shoulder meal. Both were excellent. My favorite was the Pork Shoulder dinner. There were many interesting flavors that went well together. Our waitress was also very friendly and prompt with beverage refills and any needed assistance.
Ayooo Nate
Chicken and biscuit sandwich with country gravy so filling and satisfying also with grits. Side order of chicken tenders came with a honey dipping sauce very good mixture with there in house hot sauce I recommend.
Michael Steele
So flipping good! Some of the best food in Portland. I had the shrimp and grits appetizer and the pork shoulder entreé... mouthgasm, moaning good food without being pretentious. Good people, nice place. Will go again soon.
catherine nelson
My boyfriend and I went to the Screen Door for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It's definitely a popular spot and we had to wait about 30 minutes to get seated, but it was so worth it! They had large portion sizes. I ordered the 1 piece chicken and waffles and he ordered the pork shoulder scramble with grits. So delicious!
kingdo22
Haven't been here in a long time but I've been on a fried chicken sandwhich kick and have been going to everywhere that has 1 on the menu. The chicken itself here is possibly the best in town, the sandwhich could use a little work. Still really good and makes it in to the top 10.
Selena Chu
We’re a group of 8 and waited 35mins to be seated on a Saturday. Ordered 3 pieces chicken and waffle and it was delicious. Ended up couldn’t finish cuz chicken is pretty huge. Space is crowded yet cozy. It’s a very popular place so be prepared to wait in queue. Good for family and kids friendly.
Aleeta S
This is my favorite breakfast spot in Portland! The line is always worth the wait. Best fried chicken in Portland. Always get the 2 piece and Sweet potato Waffle. They strips are huge and very filling waffle . My second go to is the Shrimp and Grits! Ohhh wee! Great atmosphere, friendly wait staff! Mimosas are a hit and miss !
Edward
Best breakfast place I've been to in a while! I had the hot link sandwich which was amazing! The wait was only 15 minutes and the server was attentive and friendly. Would definitely return if I lived here.
Tc Anderson
Must try fried chicken! Dont miss out! Carolina pulled pork sandwich was tender, perfect, and on a toasted bun! Mac & cheese and texas toast thumbs up 👍🏽
Parking in surrounding residential area. …
Manasi
Wonderful food. Everything that we tried on their menu was delicious. Their praline bacon was excellent. Their portions are big. My favorite dish is the shrimp and grits. They usually have a long wait on weekends, but it's worth the wait. Also you can order coffee while you wait for your table.
Justin Singer
Awesome food. This place is a hole in the wall with a long wait. However it is well worth it. Food comes out pretty fast, especially considering how busy they are. Everything I tried here was amazing. Specialty bacon, chicken and waffles, etc. Its all good!
Mark Saylor
Amazing food for brunch or dinner. There is typically a wait for brunch, but it is well worth it. The normal menu is great, but I have tried the special several times and enjoyed it without fail. Highly recommend trying any local broccoli/cauliflower options if they are on special, particularly the smoked ones.
SheriAnn Taylor-Nihal
Love the coating on their chicken tenders. Yum greens were sweet, bbq sauce and corn bread are not sweet. Macaroni and cheeses creamy.
GxForce
Very good brunch place with delicious food. Must try is the Gumbo they start serving it at 10:30am. Also their chicken and waffle is amazing. In the picture it's their biscuit and gravy it was delicious.
Tiara N
The atmosphere at Screen Door is loud and fun. The space is cramped, and an hour wait is typical. While you wait, you can squeeze your way up to the bar and get a drink. The food is out of this world; 100% worth the wait!
michelle fecko
Got the mixed mushroom omelette and it was pretty good! The grits were yum, too. Kiddo chowed down on the pancakes. It was pretty crowded, but the service was quick. Would go again.
Mark Brasel
The seafood jambalaya is like a party in your mouth as the nicest smiles wait on your every need. Whether you sit in the comfort of the indoors or the extravagance of the outdoor covered patio, the chicken and waffles piled high and cooked to perfection will dance on your tastebuds as you and your group enjoy your gathering. Choose from the great selections of beer and mixed drinks as , by the end you'll know , you couldn't have picked a better place for dinner.
Mitchell Campbell
Yes, there is an hour or more wait here. No, for me it wasn't worth it. The brisket hash was more like hash with a garnish of 5 small brisket cubes. The chicken and waffles was impressive and tasty, though. Fortunately, the wife shared.
Karen Jassenoff
Our waitress is Hannah. She's absolutely amazing! You won't believe how large the servings are. It's Wednesday, and the place is packed, so expect to wait. SEE BELOW
Rebecca Higginson
Most amazing chicken and waffles you will EVER taste. We were blown away. A brunch lover “must try.” I dream of this dish!
Brandi Branch-Bradford
OMG, deliciousness all around!!!! A must stop if you are in the Portland area, food will not disappoint. My Godbrother took me here for my birthday and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!!!! I don't think anything on the menu would disappoint.
June Yon
Cathead chicken sandwich was super tasty. Grits were only okay. They let you get hot water and coffee while you wait to enter. Line was long when I went.
Joel Mudrack
I've only had the pleasure of being to the Screen Door once but I find myself thinking about it often! I'm not a local to Portland which is disappointing for many reasons and not being able to visit the Screen Door is one of them.
I'm a massive chicken and waffles fan, I've had them from all over North America and I've yet to find anywhere that does them quite as good as the Screen Door does. The wait is 100% worth it, don't let the lines scare you. They move through them pretty quickly but even if they didn't, you'll still want to stick around to make sure you have some food from this place. The photo is of the bacon, take the waitress/waiters advice and order it!
David Richardson
Really great breakfast. Everything was so good. Lines wern't too bad either. It's a busy little joint but for all the right reasons. Their bloody mary is one of the best I've ever tasted. Not a lot of "food" on the bloody mary just a delicious hand-crafted mary that will hit every taste bud you have. Highly recomend!
Oleksandra Synytsia
It is very tasty and atmospheric✨
Bryan Cox
Great, little neighborhood spot with awesome food, staff, and service. Highly recommended brunch spot!
Wendy Lien
Long lines so we ordered the sweet potato waffle and fried chicken plus praline bacon to go. Would've been better I'm sure if we ate it there but still pretty good.
Kim C
There’s no reservations here and it gets pretty busy on weekends but let me tell you IT IS WORTH THE WAIT. I waited 45 mins for a table and no regrets. The grits are to die for and the chicken is unforgettable. I’m still drooling over it now. The Mac and cheese is very delicious. There was kind of poor lighting so the delicious ness of the meal cannot be captured. You’ll have to go and find it for yourself! Sooooo good.
Monica Trolio
Everything was delicious. I had the Signature Chicken and Waffles and the Praline Bacon. Service was great considering how busy it was.
Stephen Lee
A must have if visiting Portland. We had the chicken and waffles + the spicy sausage poboy. Great portions and super tasty. Be there earlier though! Line can be long
Nilay Patel
Had the Hushpuppies and Buttermilk Fried Chicken, no words to describe, have to try it for yourself. Best death row meal I've had. Great staff. Fully stocked bar for those waiting for a table.
Maureen MacNabb
Not sure what the hype is about this place. Never been there before- was shocked at the crowd- the dining area looked like a large cafeteria - not my jam for sure. Food was ok but no better than many places I have frequented.
flavio de pina
A little expensive. The food is good but far from remarkable. The atmosphere on the outside patio is wonderful. Yet a bit pricy for the quality. But the amount of food is right!
7/10
Dean H
Perfect brunch. Chicken & Waffles with real Maple syrup, partner had mushroom omelet. Both were outstanding.
Amanda Bilger
I am up here visiting and omg one of the best breakfast I have had in a long time! Amazing food, atmosphere and people.
Miguel Martin
Absolutely outstanding and full of flavorful chicken!!! The prices are fair and definitely worth it. The wait is about 15 min so nothing to complain about. This is a place I would recommend to just about anyone.
Ryan Paredez
The chicken and waffles were next level here. The chicken was sooo juicy and most.
Beware, there's just about always going to be a line. There's a few coffee shops near by where you can go to kill some time.
Also, try and breakfast mule (I think it was called). A very delicious breakfast cocktail.
Joseph Stein
My first visit to Portland topped with a wonderful dining experience at the "Screen Door Eastside" with my son and his lovely wife. The food was delicious and the service outstanding.
Jarrett Volinic
Despite waiting in line for 15 minutes before they even opened, our experience was amazing. Delicious Creole Bloody Mary's were a treat while waiting on our food to arrive. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles, my husband ordered Cathead Chicken Biscuit with Sausage Gravy, both portions were HUGE!! We actually just polished them off for dinner tonight. Highly recommend visiting here at least once, it lives up to the hype in my opinion.
Brock Henderson
Menu isn't quite as extensive as it used to be and it's more expensive than it used to be, but the quality is still excellent. We'd eat here more often if it weren't for the wait. There's a reason it's become a Portland institution.
Don Frasco
Southern cooking at its best. Must try their fried chicken and waffles. Street parking only. Waiting time is 10-15 minutes
Angela Burris
Waffle paradise!! If they offer you a juice blend... JUST SAY YES!!! The veggie gravy is a homemade mushroom gravy that rocks! So worth the wait.
Jasmine White
Food and service are always great. Nice vibe, cool decor and atmosphere. Tables can feel a little tight, but cozy.
Wisco BrewHippie
Sooooo good. Visited from Wisconsin and I had the chicken and praline waffles. The best thing I have put in my mouth in years. Go to this place!
James Tobias
Wow what a fantastic brunch spot. 100% recommend. I ate the cathead biscuits and it was beyond fantastic. Expect a bit of a wait but walk around the block and prepare for a good meal!
Michael Han
This place was out of this world!! We pbb ordered enough food to feed an army and scarfed down as much as possible before we had to head to the airport. I couldn't think of a better way to end this weekend than on this high note.
Gene Belcher
BEST RESTAURANT IN PORTLAND. THE FOOD WAS GOOD. THE SERVICE WAS PERFECT. I WISH I COULD GO BACK AGAIN IF I COULD. MUST TRY BREAD PUDDING. 😍 …
joseph terry
I am from the Great South and I have not been able to find descent southern cooking in the Northwest. I know it is my fault for trying to find southern cooking in the Northwest, but I did find it!!
I had their Shrimp and Grits and WoW!!!
It was good!! I’ve eaten Shrimp and Grits in Charleston, Savannah, Brunswick, Mobile and Gulfport. Now it isn’t as good as getting this dish from these areas, by people that have perfected it, but it is a damn close second!
Eat here and y’all will be happy you did!!!
Purva Chhatre
We ordered chicken and waffles with maple syrup . The food was good but surprisingly we were charged $3 for maple syrup.
Elmer Kim
The huevos Rancheros were amazing, would eat repeatedly.
The chicken fingers were garbage, do not get. Didn't ruin the experience, but...
Kenneth Beynon
We went here for breakfast and this place is amazing. They do southern specialties but with a modern twist. I had the chicken and biscuits and my wife had an asparagus frittata. Everything was delicious.
Hi, Jinx !
Such a busy lunch but we got accommodations for 2 without a reservation. Inside and outside dining. Varied menu items for the whole family.
Kelly Nixon
Excellent! My family loved the food. I liked the pick 3 items for $16 part of the menu. It allowed me to pick the meal I wanted. The broccoli was so delicious. Very busy for a Tuesday night, a good sign that people love this place. The desserts were all home made, which is rare these days. The people beside us ordered the banana pie and it looked amazing. We were all too full for dessert. My son did not like the kids meal burger, and he knows his burgers, so I would avoid that. Other than that, highly recommended!
Ken (TriHarderKen)
Best food and best service. It even got the seal of approval from my Tennessee-born-l-and-raised wife!
Yang Yang
The fried chicken is pretty awesome. I've tried lots of fried chicken styles, this is the one I like most. It is crispy and the chicken is really juicy!
James WA
Love the outside seating. Start with the praline bacon as an appetizer. Then move into all the good meals. I ordered the Cajun scramble.
Natalie Tsui
Excellent customer service and atmosphere, tried the chicken and sweet potato waffle, chicken was crispy and not greasy, waffle was perfect in flavor and texture.
Billy Truong
Worth the wait! Me and a friend went for breakfast and it lived up to the hype. Had the chicken and waffles and they were amazing. Chicken was great, amazing crispy skin and the meat was juicy. Everything was great, would definitely go back!
Yannic
Ok , we waited in line for 2 hours on a sunday for brunch. And well.. It was amazing. We had the chicken and waffles and while it was kind of expensive, it blew my mind.
Would definitely come back here when it's not as busy.
Emilee Sievers
Great food! Crowded but cozy atmosphere. Breakfast all day and Lunch menu after 10:30am.
Don't come starving for a quick bite, you might need to wait.
We got a got a booth with attentive and upbeat service. We'll be back to try them po' boys! 😎🍴
Highly recommend the Fried Chicken Sandwich with a butterleaf bleu cheese side salad.
Matt
Cozy atmosphere and comfort food. We had breakfast on a Wednesday and were surprised how busy the place was. There was no line, but the restaurant was pretty packed. I asked the waitress and she said it was pretty normal. The restaurant inside is nothing to write home about - shelves are lined with homemade (looking) jars of pickled veggies. Lots of natural light and overall cozy.
We ordered the praline bacon, which I thought was tasty, but you can only really eat a piece - maybe two. It's not overly sweet...more nutty than anything else. I also had the bananas foster french toast, which I thought, was very good. Again, it sounds sweet, but not as sweet as you might imagine. The "whipped cream" tasted fresh and homemade, which was a nice touch. I did get a half order and I'm glad I did, as I left stuffed. My wife had a more "traditional" breakfast with eggs, bacon and toast. She said it was good, everything tasted fresh and was cooked correctly - she's a stickler when it comes to "eggs over medium". For the price, the food was good and did not disappoint. I will say, however, that we went for breakfast and for me, breakfast is hard to mess up. We hope to return to experience another meal at Screen Door...maybe dinner.
Lastly, our waitress was great - attentive, but not annoying. She gave recommendations freely and was very patient with us while we indecisively looked over the menu.
All in all, we had a good first time experience and hope to have a great experience the next time we go here! If you're in Portland on a weekday morning and have time for breakfast - check it out!

All mom wanted for her 78th birthday was the chicken and waffles brunch box and she loved every bit of it :-) Best fried chicken in town and generous portions of everything so she's got enough left for hobbit supper and dinner later :-)

The daily special Pork Shoulder ruined my life. I didn't know pork could taste like this and I know in order to have flavor like this again I will have to travel 2,400 miles one way. And the portions are enough for at least two meals.
Dinner for 6 with drinks and tip ran a hair over $200.

Yeah, there's a reason this place is on every list of best places to eat in Portland. I'm not even a chicken and waffle fan, but I can't wait to have that meal again! Coffee was amazing too!

So good, we came back the next morning for breakfast! We did have to wait in a line for about an hour, but once we took a bite into the chicken and waffles, we regretted nothing. Despite the wait, place was all smiles and super friendly. We sat at the bar and got to know some folks local, Washington and California. We already know we're coming back so 'til next time!

Praise the Lord they use salt! Sometimes hype can be a turn off. So when you wait 45min for a table, you think, this better be worth it. Service is a bit meh, bc of their need to quickly turn tables. The wait staff are less engaging and somewhat impatient. The portion sizes are great if you want leftovers. As a girl raised in the South I was happy to have decent cheese grits although a bit on the thin side. Biscuits are more like scones and should be flakier. The sweet tea was delicious and the hollandaise was beautiful in flavor and color. I'm gluten free and they offered good solutions for my eggs Benedict. You must try the praline bacon! Looking forward to eating here again.

We had to wait a long time for our food, but when the food came it was phenomenal. We had the shrimp and grits and the praline bacon waffles. We scraped our plates clean.

Stood in the cold on Christmas Eve morning a half hour before opening to guarantee a spot for brunch. Was all worth it for the experience of delicious chicken and waffles (a breakfast only item) with my family.
Our food was great, the servers were all friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was pretty great.
Be prepared to either get to the restaurant early (30 mins to an hour) or possibly wait 45 mins for a table. Lines down the block are a very common sight.
Screen Door only takes one reservation at the beginning of the breakfast and dinner hours for a group of 6 or more, good luck!
