TOP is a local favorite, with great variety of authentic Portuguese food. The restaurant is pretty big, on one side they have the bar section, and on the other side it’s the dine in tables seating area. The bar area is more popular during the busy hours. Their menu is pretty long, with options covering chicken, seafood, beef, lamb and fishes. I got to try the garlic chicken and grilled swordfish. Chicken was really good, garlic sauce the delicious. But the swordfish was not up to the mark for me. I was expecting a better sauce with it. They give huge pieces of vegetables too with the main course. Street parking is really hard to find around the restaurant, so prepare to drive around for a while.

A small parking lot is located across the street from the entrance. When you first walk in you enter into the bar seating area and there is separate dining room with a nice decor. Service was great. Food was very fresh, but we were disappointed that the seafood Mariscada came with white rice instead of yellow saffron rice and there were no fried potato slices. At all other restaurants that we have ordered this dish from, they have served saffron rice and papas fritas. Red Sangria, boar sausages, salad and tiramisu were all great.

The food here is excellent. I have never been here when the place has been full, which is a bit offsetting. But the food is great. On the weekends they have roast goat which is divine. The bar area looks more local and casual, which I like, just have always sat in the restaurant part. I always have the same waiter, sorry I don’t know his name, but he is great! They are all nice there

This place never disappoints. Consistently excellent service serving delicious authentic portuguese food. The bar section is more casual but lively beautiful environment. The bartenders and waitresses are very pleasant and make you feel like family. We can't wait to visit again!

Appetizers were extremely good. We got the garlic shrimp, chorizo, fried calamari and mushrooms. Dinner was good the prime rib was cooked just like I wanted. Sides were ok. Service took the show. Felt right at home.

The experience started before we even went in. Nice outside decor and scenic and clean inside. We sat in the dinning room and I felt like I was sitting in a European restaurant. Then they came out with the Portuguese bread and Portuguese olives. Wow! Then came the seafood Paella. Totally delish ! The kids loved their food and so did we. We will definitely be back

When I walked in, they were surprised I was eating alone but once this beautiful plate arrived I was pleased. I guess since it’s a Portuguese family restaurant most others order take out. Well for my first time I wanted to eat in. I ordered this 2 times that week and the lamb chops once which was too small to me so rack it is!

Taste of Portugal is exactly what it sounds like. I found this gem when flying out of EWR years ago and love it to this day. Service & food are top notch. Get the sampler appetizer and give anything on the menu a try!

This restaurant was definitely a GREAT choice and I totally recommend it!! The food was amazing and the servings were huge. I read another review that said that their servings were small and I'm like did you order an appetizer or something?? Anyways, we were sat down immediately. After seating they took our drinks order, then a few mins later our food order. The food came out all at once and we noticed that the portions were very generous, which is hard to come by in my opinion. The food itself was AMAZING! I ordered the beef stew with carrots and mash potatoes and I was so glad I did. It tasted exactly like the one my grandma used to make. For people who don't eat too much salt then this may be a salty plate, but it doesn't bother me because I love salty/savory food. My entire table was satisfied and they all agreed that the food had really good taste. The servers were all nice and attentive, except for one young lady with jet black long straight hair that seemed like she was either having a bad day or that she hates her job, she was not friendly at all and to be honest should look for a different job. Other than that I will definitely come back whenever I happen to be in Newark.

Excellent experience! We were looking for something close, because we didnt know the area. After a search, we picked this place because the photos of the food looked pretty good.Definitely made the right choice. This is a family place or a date night. The waiters were attentive. The food was exquisite. MUST try the roasted baby goat! Heavenly!! Best sangria I've ever had. 18 July 2021, My wife and I haven't been here in more than 6 months. Nothing has changed! I ordered seafood pasta w/ white wine sauce. My wife had crab stuffed salmon. OMG!! Sooooo good!!! This place has never left me disappointed. The white sangria was delicious. Most important, the waiter was the same one we always see and remembered us. It's a nice feeling to know that your not Joe blow...hello...goodbye. Very polite, helpful and courteous. We will be back. Thank you Taste of Portugal for a welcoming experience.

Pictured is the swordfish with potatoes and mushroom. The aesthetic of the restaurant was surprisingly nice. The menu selection was fair. The taste and portions of food was good. My fish, however, was way overcooked! And as you can see it's drowning in sauce. I absorbed a good bit of it with some rice and fries 🤷🏽‍♀️

I've never been to Portugal but I'm pretty sure this is what it tastes like. From the delicious apps to the hearty entrees like the Grilled Striper Bass pictured below and especially the filet served with a piping hot tile and ice cream scoop sized dollop of garlic butter, Taste of Portugal is a great place to spend the evening or even just kickstart it. Set far away from the hustle and bustle of Ferry St, T.O.P. is nestled on the opposite side of the Ironbound section at the intersection of Delancey and Van Buren. Be sure to ask for a pitcher of its famous red sangria served by their charming "quick" waitresses. Only 4 stars from me today, our waitress forgot my favorite Collard Greens soup...oh did I mention the Caldo Verde? A must-have, but maybe next time.

I am very critical of restaurants. I have no qualms burying a restaurant with the truth. In this case the truth is this place is fantastic. The food was delicious, healthy and fresh. The options will satisfy a diverse group of your family and friends. The service was prompt, responsive and just shy of intrusive. The atmosphere was light and casual. The price was on the low side of high priced but well worth the expense. I have been to a taste of Portugal twice and I have not been disappointed. The baked cod fish dish with the veggies and potatoes was enough for two. The rib eye with potatoes and veggies was huge. I didn’t walk out of there feeling like I just ate thanksgiving. I walked out feeling like I ate a large healthy meal and I still had a take home bag with me. The limoncello ice cream tart dessert was unique and new for my palate. I loved it. They had a chocolate layered cup with different textures of dark chocolate in one cup (shaved chocolate, mouse, pudding/cream and chocolate with nuts on top) it was unbelievable. This place will be one of my go to places when I want to impress someone with a good time out for dinner. Expect to spend about $100 for a table of two, not including drinks from the bar, but like I said the food portions and the way it was prepared and served make the cost worth it. Enjoy going here. It is highly recommended.

I visited Taste if Portugal for a catered event. The food was delicious. Flavorful. The way Portuguese food should taste. The waiters were very attentive which made the overall dining experience pleasant. I would definitely recommend dining there.

The bacalhau com natas is hearty and delicious. If you are in the mood for steak, the filet mignon on the stone is both delicious and fun. The waiter slices and cooks the steak on the table in front of you then leaves the stone so you can finish the steak to your desired temperature. Highly recommended.

We had an event at this place, the portion of food is very limited. The service was slow bc they had other customers and had only 4 servers for a total of 100 people in all. Was very disappointed with the service . It was a surprise party for my brother but the one surprised here was me with the waiting time and portion of food. The only one that was very helpful and went beyond the call of duty was “Eduardo”

While, the seafood paella was tasty, most of it was rice, which was disappointing. The chicken and fish dishes are the best on the menu.

Worst sea food I've had in my life and incredibly over prices(price would have been fair if the food was edible) no wonder the place we were the only table there on a Thursday night. The portions were generous and the servers nice maybe they cook their meat better?

The food was amazing! We were here for a work training and decided to stop here for dinner. I have special dietary restrictions and the chef was more than happy to accommodate. I ordered the paella with only shrimp and chicken. Sooooo good! I wish I knew how large the serving size was because I could have shared with my coworkers. We didn't have refrigerators at the hotel. Anyways...great food and wine selections!! You'll definitely have extra for lunch the next day. Wait staff was also super nice!

Whether you want to sit at the bar or at the sign dining you are sore to have a wonderful experience. If you want to just wear sweatpants and enjoy a simple night then the bar is a simple and amazing experience. If you want to do fine dining then I highly recommend that you call in advance to make reservations because large parties tend to fill up the dining area. Terms of the quality of the food you are receiving top notch meats and fish. I have yet to have a meal that I have not liked and I've explored the menu many times. I highly recommend going here

Might become our favorite restaurant in Newark. Small restaurant compared to some of the more well known touristy places.Food was excellent as well the service. Large bar to eat in or good sized dining room. We will take some friends there in two weeks.

If you're looking for a calm place to have a dinner during the week this is definitely a place that I would recommend. Other locations closer to Ferry Street tend to be very crowded. Food was amazing the service was on point.

My daughter & I dined at the restaurant. The ratings is very dependent on which menu item one selects and one's expectations about the restaurant based on an online reviews. I ordered the red snapper which was moist and delicious. My daughter ordered the chicken in garlic sauce. Although showing chicken breast on the online menu which was the principal reason we selected this restaurant , the actual menu chicken in the restaurant was chicken parts consisting mainly of cut up drumsticks. On balance I give it 3 stars. The wait staff is excellent and the service and meal pacing was very good.

Went on a Saturday afternoon, quite & relaxing. Street parking was not a problem. A pitcher of sangria was fruitful and delicious. Shared cockles in garlic sauce. Needed more Portuguese rolls to collect all the sauce. And don't get me started on the salmon stuffed with Alaskan crab meat. Nice crust on the fish. A nice finish was the cappuccino. The wait staff was so friendly and attentive, yet didn't hover.

Very nice restaurant. The staff were friendly and gave great service. The restrooms were clean. They had a nice bar area which we sat at whilst waiting for the rest of our party to arrive. The appetisers were very good. We ordered for the table and had stuffed mushrooms, octopus salad, sausage, shrimp, clams casino and they were all very tasty. For my entree I ordered the paella valenciana and the lobster tail was over cooked I could hardly chew it, the claw was fine though, but the rice was too watery and the chicken was tough. I picked out the scallops, shrimp, clams and mussels and just ate them. Everybody else enjoyed their meals. One person in our party had steak which was prepared at the table and I know she really enjoyed her meal. I just wouldn’t recommend the paella which is why I only gave the restaurant 3 stars, because the food is what you go to a restaurant for. The prices are very reasonable. I’m not sure if I would go again. I had a nice evening there all the same.

If you like beef, make sure to get the steak on the stone. It is cooked at your table in front of you. The longer the cut stays on the stone, the more it cooks. So if you are like me and rare is your flare take it off quickly. Pairs well with the super bock on draught

Food and Sangria were excellent and the wait staff was courteous and helpful. Our group was allowed to stay a bit longer after dinner until our conversations finished. We didn't feel pressured to finish our meals so the table could be reused for new guests.

Came here for the first time in January, as we always have had another go to Portuguese restaurant. We looked at the reviews and said parking is annoying, so we took a 10 dollar uber! Best idea ever. Ended up spending 3 hours in the restaurant. The service is impeccable. Have been here a couple times since and every time I crave a steak on the stone, I need to go and get it. Great lively atmosphere! Made it into my top 3 fave restaurants!

We came here on a reservation for Mother's Day. The lively and noisy atmosphere was evidence that this restaurant is popular for large groups. There was a special Mother's Day menu, but I'm not sure if it's different from the normal menu. One thing to note is that the menu is organized by different types of meat (chicken, veal, seafood, etc)

Great, great food but it is tainted by the service. Though the manager is extremely reasonable and helpful there is this one server/bartender that is just unacceptable. She works in the bar section and has short black hair and has a very in your face attitude. I have stopped visiting the bar section because on multiple occasions she has felt the need to get into an argument with me about her inability to get an order correct or to express to me that certain plates cannot be altered but only after they had already been made. She is an extremely irresponsible server and I am still confused as to why she is working there when on multiple occasions I have seen other customers arguing with her as well. I would urge any customers to eat in the dining area even though I personally enjoy the bar scene in the bar section, only because the service is so much better.

We came in on a Saturday afternoon at around 12 and were seated in the main area. There was no one on our side of the dining area, so we had half the restaurant to ourselves for quite some time. We were waited on promptly, and got our food very fast. We ordered the fried calamari, clam in red sauce, and shrimp and garlic sauce for appetizers. I thought the shrimp in garlic sauce was very tasty and the calamari was decent. For our shared entrees we had the paella marenira, shrimp and scallop kebab, and the seafood combo platter. The entrees were all pretty good. Except for a piece of fish on the seafood platter, everything tasted fresh and delicious.

We missed our flight back to Denver due to a late flight coming back from Norway. The airline booked us in a hotel with a food voucher at the hotel. We weren’t really interested in that. So we looked up restaurants nearby and WOW! The food was amazing and the portions were family style so we obviously ordered too much. Clams casino, cockles, salad, paella valencianada, stuffed dover sole. The spices and the flavor was to die for. The wait staff constantly checked on us. It’s a family owned restaurant with locals/regulars congregating in the lounge. White table clothes in an intimate dining room with a casual old world feel. It was simply amazing! I have no need or desire to go back to Newark anytime soon but if I do, I’m definitely going back to this place. It definitely made Newark more enjoyable for a layover. Great dinner. Don’t have enough great things to say about this place!

I had a 50th Birthday Party here on 6/10/17. From the start the staff was helpful & very confident in their food & party experience. The party could not have been more perfect. The food was spectacular...from the octopus salad, shrimp & garlic, fried calamari, chicken & garlic, paella & famous pork with clams. The sangria was spot on & their desserts were awesome. Our guests, who btw, were mostly Italian, could not race enough about the staff & food. I highly recommend A Taste of Portugal.

The food was so good! We've been a couple of times now and always get the tapas. The Medallones de Falada and the Ensalada de Avocado are 2 of my favorites. They have a wall of windows that completely open up when it's nice outside which I also love. Also good if you want to bring a group. It's our go to place when people come to visit us.

Another good meal at this busy portuguese restaurant down neck! Split an appetizer sampler which could have been a meal, steaks were cooked as ordered, waitress was very nice, helped with wine selection which was really good! Will be back!

We are from Dallas TX and my family is Portuguese. So, of course we looked for the best restaurant where traditional dishes from the home country are made. Mozambique is not on the meu, but the kitchen said they would make it for us. Huge portions, great atmosphere, superior service . We will make this a place to stop anytime we travel through this area.

The tile filot mignon was good as long as you cook it right. Since you are the one turning it over on the tile and monitoring it. It cooks quick mine was tender. The whole snapper was just ok, not sure if it was real fresh. The veal chop was tasty but wish it was bigger or had another one. Staff was friendly just had to remind them to bring water. Overall a good experience but we were expecting better quality.

We were there new years eve and had a SPECTACULAR meal as usual! Dont need to look at the menu. Start with fried calamari, shrimp in garlic sauce and wild boar sausage. Then twin lobster tails and the filet on the stone. And don't forget a pitcher of red sangria My favorite restaurant by far!

Appetizers good for two to share, loved the shrimp in garlic. Butterflied whole striped bass was delicious. Filet cooked tableside on heated stone was fun and tasty with garlic butter. Good side dishes, broccoli rabe and rice and beans accompanied entrees. Highly recommended.

Bumped into this place by accident as I was trying to find another restaurant in the area. Food was decent. If you are into Portuguese food, try daily specials. Folks behind the bar helpful with the food drink choices. Really decent seletion of Wines and a few good beer on tap. If you are with a group Sangria Pitcher is a good option. Try Uber as the parking is very limited.

Smack in the middle of Newark, New Jersey's Ironbound section of the city sits a gem of a restaurant. Great bar area and spacious yet comfortable dining room both allow for a relaxed eating experience. Very competent, pleasant and efficient staff make you feel comfortable from the moment you enter to the last good bye. Broad menu filled with dishes known to have come from the Iberian Peninsula.The poached Dover Sole is especially delicious. For authentic, delicious food prepared in a Portuguese manner, Taste of Portugal is my first destination. There is a down side: parking really sucks. But once this is behind you, the evening is all pure pleasure.
