Reasonably priced food that is very good. We had dinner here on Thursday evening based on the Google reviews. It’s a cool local place that is cash only with a very friendly staff and good food. I had the pork chops with fries. The chops were over cooked but still good and the fries were perfect. The beef cubes had an interesting sauce on them and were very tasty.

Delicious is an understatement. My party Dined-In, but we insisted on take out as well afterwards. Appears like a family ran restaurant. Very attentive staff, affordable prices, fast service, and the restaurant itself is a clean, well kept space.

this place is also good food and they serve a lot just like Wilson barbecue i gotta say they both have about the same menu the price is also cheep and the food is great and finger licking good but my favorite is still Wilson barbecue not that there nothing wrong with this place is that iam a one person restaurant and i stick with one place .no offence to this extablishment. they have good food here Also it's like the same menu but a different place.

Wow the food is AMAZING & DELICIOUS & FAVOURFUL & BLAh blah.. Definitely get cubed chicken & combo (0.5 chicken + 0.5 ribs). The crust and seasoning of their meat is so tasty. The rice and fries are on point too. Oh and I forgot to mention the free Portuguese roll, it's fresh and tasty as well. Definitely come here over and over again.

Place used to be way better. The chicken was dry and they also don't give the pickled veggies anymore, plus their rice didn't have the same flavor it used to.

They give you a ton of good food at a fair price. My only negative thing to say is, I requested BBQ sauce on the side and actually got ketchup sized packets of Hunts BBQ sauce. Big no no for a true BBQ spot...LoL

This is the type of place you go into and whether your eating in or taking out, the minute you put the last bite in your mouth your already planning your next visit and saving the place in your favorites. Staff is friendly, food never disappoints and quantity of food vs price will exceed your expectations. This is a cash only spot but in my experience those type of places have the best food 👌 My favorite is the half boneless grilled chicken with rice and fries 🤤 Go get yours.

Chicken sandwich always taste great with the French fries but, the wait time to bring the food to us took over 30 minutes, unacceptable. The prices went up and no more bread before dinner.

Awesome food. Large portions and reasonable pricing. So far I've tried the BBQ Chicken, Pork chops and beef cubes and all of them are great. The meals come with either rice and fries or rice and beans. The fried banana is literally that, not a sweet plantain so be aware of that. The side order of fried onions are a good addition to any meal. Their only need of improvement would be the restroom. It needs an update but I'm there for the food so that's why I don't take off a star. Come here when you're hungry!!

5 stars for VALUE. The low prices stir up extra excitement about the delicious food. The sides are slightly bland and the meat slightly salty. Not sure if it was intentional, but it actually balances pretty well when put together. Remain calm but quick when ordering. The place can be a little hectic during the week. Haven't been back since the pandemic started, unfortunately. Cash only, maybe? Better check..

Always a GREAT PLACE to stop for Lunch. Try the breaded Chicken breast, it was Crispy and Juicy. One suggestion to management, but the TVS back on HGTV. Sometimes Fox News is a bit much for a dining Atmosphere.

It's cash only, wanted to get that out first. I went on a Thurs evening. It seemed packed with folks from the neighborhood. Lots of cops, EMS and folks who work the train station and know good value. The waitresses are very nice, but you don't get a menu unless you ask for one. All the regulars already know what they want. I got half beef/half chicken with salad. It was a big serving of short ribs and half the grilled chicken. I thought the chicken was very good. Ribs about what I expected, good but not great.

First time visit to this establishment, and ordered several of the full meals, which included the combo, bbq chicken, pork ribs and the shrimp. My sons and I enjoyed every delicious bite. I'll be stopping by again the next time I'm in town. I recommend putting this on your places visit when you're in the neighborhood. BTW the owner is super friendly and I strongly suggest supporting this independent vendor during these unprecedent times. Enjoy!!!

This place is great. It's like a cleaner and more modern version of Ferry Street BBQ with nicer staff. The rice is a little bit tastier, but the chicken is pretty decent. Ferry Street BBQ has better chicken, but if the line is too long, this is definitely a suitable alternative. Just a few minutes down the block.

Very inexpensive great food. You could feed 5 people for $50. Don't get confused with a regular BBQ. We're from California and BBQ to us has BBQ sauce. Its not that kind of place. Still delicious and flavorful.

Cheap cheap cheap food. Very tasty, well seasoned barbecue meats. Definitely a great place for the carnivore. Take out is very popular here. Both times I have been I have had to wait 15 minutes or so for a table, but it is really a testament to how good the food is at such a reasonable price. I recommend the combo with both barbecue chicken and pork ribs including rice and fries for $13. That is enough food for 2 people. Food came out quickly after we ordered. Only down side I could find is the table service is a bit slow. I had to wait a while to order drink refills, get to go boxes, and pay the bill. Overall a great experience and I will be back again for a 3rd visit soon!

Ordered a pan of short ribs and they worked with me on getting enough for 20 people. The server even cut them in half to fill up a pan. Ready in 20 minutes, just awesome as I found them by Googling them.

Fantastic food, and for the price, it’s one of the best around. Recommend the chicken and pork ribs combo and ask for the Treś leches cake along with the rice on the side. They’re like crunchy goodness and full of flavor. A combo serves 2 or 3 depending on how hungry you are - and all for a reasonable price. This is not a fancy place but the food and staff are amazing. Its a place frequented by many police officer's. My family and i often drive almost an hour to come to this place because of the ribs and half a chicken combo served with yellow rice, a ton of fries and a few vegetables. They also serve steak and other meats. If your in the area or not you owe it to yourself to come here you won't regret it and the price can't be beat.

Heaven in your mouth. Let's just say when my partner and I are too lazy to cook, we go here. The food is delectable and its always enough for leftovers. We hardly dine-in and most of our experiences have been pick-up and go. The place is clean, the customer service is great and on any given day you will find the place swarming with local officials, cops, etc. not because of the crime but because the food is GREAT! Enough said, GO HERE! Nothing fancy, just good ole eating for cheap.

Stuck in Newark for 2 days decided to get out of the hotel and find some food. Arrived for a late lunch and the place was packed. Sat down next to a nice family and started chatting with them. They recommended some of the items on the menu. The food was delicious and while service was slow it was acceptable. Huge portions and the meat and chicken were very tender. Especially liked the vegetables in vinegar. The flan was the best I have ever had, only wish we had a place like this in Kansas. For 3 people it was $39 with dessert.

Great little place to grab a meal. I haven’t been in some time, but super-convenient to go in a little early to park before a Devils’ game (can usually find street parking right around those blocks if you have a little patience) and have some food. I liked the mixed platter of ribs and chicken that also had the rice, fries, and pickled veggies. Big portions for reasonable prices. Pretty fast service and were always accommodating if I mentioned grabbing the check quick to get out in time for the games.

Waitress took a little too long to help but they serve good quality food that's fast and worth the money. My girlfriend and I both ordered beef ribs with different sides. The ribs were flanken and I had to cut them with a knife to enjoy it but our meal was only 20 dollars together and I was pleased with everything

Super! Huge portions, hearty home cooking, healthy, broccoli, chicken, potatos, quick serve. Filled with cops all the time. Great stop if visiting Seton Hall Law or main campus. Super prices. We had plenty for dinner the next day.

Love this place. The food is excellent and well priced. A great place to go before a Devil's game, or any event at the Prudential Center. Parking can be tough to find, but it is free. The walk to the arena is quick.

Awesome tasty half a chicken for only 7 Bucks can't beat this deal. They have beef, pork and sea food dishes. BBQ short ribs are delicious. Their menu items are so cheap. Cash only though! Parking could be an issue. There may be a slight wait time depending on what time you go. Good good overall!

Fantastic food at an affordable price. I wish I could get chicken cooked this good in Tampa FL. The place can get smokey at times, however, that is part of the charm. Dining here is like being at a family BBQ. The last time I had chicken like this was in Petersham Sydney. 6years ago, well worth the wait.

Exactly what I expected from the reviews. Inexpensive decent quality meat. I will warn you that it is very hot in this place so be prepared. Wouldn't want to be here in my work clothes. Get here early for lunch and sit closest to the door away from the grill and you'll be fine. Definitely worth it.

Excellent, cheap, delicious, quick, local....... you see this is the kind of place that makes it hard to go anywhere else . Where else can you get half a fire roasted chicken and two sides for 7.00? This isnt ruth Chris, but will make you hate everything else in this price point. My favorite bbq spot since I can’t remember when .. but lately the service isn’t up to par .. few times I went my order has either come wrong. & recently I ask my server for a request he didn’t even ask the cook or manager he neglected my requested told me straight out no and walk away. Not the best salads (Iceberg hybrid basics) but it's an affordable sit down or takeout full of food (definitely BBQ chicken, I eat poultry and fish only) that can feed two easily. It's where I go when I want to be a cheap fat girl for a day. And it's good!

Iconic place in my old neighborhood. Been operating for almost 20 years. This place has attracted local law enforcement and criminals alike. The ribs, yellow rice, and beans are my favorite and all-around classic. BBQ here is like an art - an art that many locals have not mastered. Place is very business-traditional: no delivery, no call ahead, no debit/credit cards. This is a positive, it prevents the costs being offset to the customer. Great prices.

A one and a half pony show menu, but very tasty ribs and split chicken done on a gigantic hand powered graded rotisserie over real charcoal. Delicious choice of yellow rice with black beans, or scrumptious thin cut fried potatoes. You get your money's worth and a taste of what America's unassimulating diversity has on the menu.

Hands down the best place to eat or pick up food. Tried other BBQ spots in the area (which there is alot) and non of them compared to the portion of food you get served for only $7. Not only the portion, but the best tasting chicken and rice you'll ever have. They are quick to serve you when you sit down and eat, but if you order to pick up make sure you call 15 mins ahead of time being that it can get a bit busy. But besides that, top notch service and quality of food. Don't be discouraged if you see the place really packed, there's a reason why everyone wants to eat there! Me and my girlfriend ate here not long ago and ordered a whole chicken with rice and fries, along with beans and two sodas, all for $15 bucks. Two medium sized combos from mcdonalds would cost you more than this! Strongly recommend eating here. You won't regret it!

My affair with Mcwhorter BBQ started like a year back and since we have been going strong and steady. This place is my goto place for authentic Portuguese food. It is located conveniently few blocks from the train station. The menu is not huge but has all almost all the staple Portuguese fare. I have tried a number of things here but my favorite is BBQ chicken which is made right in front of your eyes. So fresh, tender and is absolutely delicious. One can opt for half chicken which comes for $6 bucks and gets you a side of rice , beans and fries. Trust me the portion are really big, if one can finish it they will fill up their with a lot of tasty food. They serve complimentary bread with butter before serving food which is nice. The servers are really goo and attentive. Overall an awesome Portuguese joint in my book. FYI- It is cash only!

We ordered the whole bbq chicken (pollo a la brasa) with rice and salad. The salad seemed kind of old and the oil and vinegar they gave us to put as dressing just tasted bad, especially the oil. It tasted old too. The yellow rice was ok. But the portion is smaller than most of these Portuguese restaurants in the area. The chicken was very good though. Very flavorful and juicy. The chicken was def the best thing on the plate by far. We also ordered the guarana ( Brazilian soda ). It's good but $2 a can is a bit much I think. I would only really go back for the chicken. It's the best thing.

Wow, what a find for us. Calling this an authentic charrusceria probably comes as close as I can to describing it. Its across the street from the Spanish Tavern in Newark's Ironbound and the combination of simplicity, quality and value are a delightful throwback to another age. My ravenous 18 year old son ordered barbequed beef and pork cubes, served in a mildly spiced aujus and a side of rice and pickled vegetable crudites. I ordered beef ribs, perfectly roasted with a tangy dry rub and same sides. The nearby grill, full of sizzling chicken, pork and beef cuts is the perfect visible complement to this delicious, simple and ample meal at very fair prices. Go!

I came in today for dinner and oh my gosh. They serve free bread and butter as an "appetizer" and the bbq chicken and pork ribs platters are so good! The platter have rice, fries and vegetables (you can order salad as a replacement) the food is outstanding in flavor and leaves your mouth watering and wanting more! The Flan dessert is amazing! Bring your family or whoever to this mini restaurant around McWhorter street in Newark.

The Garlic Shrimp is too Oily.(I had to add some Heavy Cream to dilute it. I wish I added some curry powder to take it up a notch too!) I recommend the Grilled Shrimp though...

What a gem, nestled deep within the old cozy Newark suburb of ironbound. Very homey feel, seems like its a place that is made up of all regulars who come exclusively for the fantastic Portuguese bbq, as there is really nothing nearby in this sleepy little suburb block. The portions are huge. The chicken and ribs were expertly prepared, best of all the Portuguese chicken and rib joints I've experienced in Essex county, but this is no fast food joint, its a old bar converted to a restaurant probably thirty years back. The prices. I can't say enough of how reasonable this place is. I ordered a 1/2 chicken and ribs combo platter for $12, thinking that I'd have some leftovers but proved to be enough for two hungry men. The chicken and ribs were rotated by hand on a well ventilated coal fire, regularly basted by the chef who graciously allowed me to take his picture in action. The platter was accompanied by shoestring potato fries and tender spanish rice. Going to Mc Whorters convinced me that I want to move to Ironbound; fantastic food, the best transportation hub in the state with 24hr access to NYC, AND the best food I've had in the state...all the negative attitudes regarding Newark that I've seen here on Yelp and in my 9 years living here are way off base, racially motivated and should be ignored. Sure, there's people struggling here in Newark, they may not look like you, but Newark can't be written off. In my opinion, Newark will be the equivalent of the reinventing of Brooklyn waterfront in twenty years
