Reviews of The Italian Barrel
Nice atmosphere. Didn't make reservations so we had to sit at the bar. Rhonda, the bartender was very attentive and friendly. Eating space was a bit cramped due to all the things on the bar. Wife had the meatballs and spaghetti, asked for more sauce.. I had the chicken Antony, used a lot of her sauce to give it a bit more flavor.
Absolutely the best Italian meal I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying! The service was top notch, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was romantic and comfortable. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting New Orleans. Try the Espresso Crème Brûlée! It's to die for!
Was such a great experience, we ate there twice! Had mussels appetizer with cocktails and just loved the gulf shrimp with pasta linguine with home made pesto, topped with fresh parmesan.
One of our favorite restaurants in all of NOLA. We make sure to come by every time we are in town. Food was great but it took a while for it to come out. Might have been cause the manager was more concerned with her cocktail or our waitress taking random shots every time she grabbed something from the bar.
THIS RESTAURANT IS MY FAV THING ABOUT NEW ORLEANS. My fiancé and I always go here literally every single night when we are in NOLA. I think about it very often when I’m away. Craving the penne alla vodka as I type this review.
What a wonderful experience for our last night in New Orleans! Classic, authentic Italian food. Huge portions. Fabulous, friendly, and efficient service from Demi. A good variety of Italian wines. The chicken parm was delicious and the blood orange sorbet was the perfect palate cleanser. We were told to go here by a New Orleans native and it was absolutely worth it.
Enjoyed a lovely salad and also a bowl of spaghetti with one meatball. This is not in the photograph cuz it was too good and we had to eat it right away. I'll be back to try more
Although New Orleans has some of the best food in the country, I have always found italian cuisine to be pretty weak in NOLA. And I have tried a ton of places around the city + Metairie and Kenner over the last decade. I spent a lot of summers in Italy (specifically Northern Italy), so my idea of Italian food was just that. Eventually, I gave up my search and had to come to the conclusion that New Orleans Italian is a mixture of local cuisine and evolved southern italian. Accidentally, I ran into Italian Barrel earlier this year, and I couldn't believe it - I found the REAL Italian food. I recommend this place 105%, especially the pastas. It's worth the price..
Best Italian food I’ve had in a long time. Surprised to find it in New Orleans. Just saying that charcuterie board was beyond delicious. Tanya and staff were amazing! Great recommendations and food was super delicious.
Amazing Italian food! Group ordered lobster ravioli, veal picatta, veal pichinto, gnoche, crab penne, clams and a cheeseboard
I am on cloud nine after eating here! Usually Italian can make you feel heavy after eating but I felt light and fulfilled. The bread had an air of fluffiness with a perfect outside crisp! It was done just right - made with consideration. The truffle pasta came plated in the perfect portion - the edible flower doubles as decor and as a floral fragrance to the dish. I smelled the dish and my senses filled with the perfect balance of truffle - next I broke open the flowers and a burst of florals filled the air as I sprinkled the petals over my ravioli - many people can overhand truffle but this sauce was superb! Biting into the mushroom mix ravioli gave an earthy savory balance to the fragrant flower petals and truffle, with a light dusting of fresh parmasean - the smell alone felt like heaven - the textures were also well paired. The waitress and bartender were attentive and accommodating. The signature fussili dish was also a light yet creamy sauce - the peas were fresh and plump and the prosciutto was not left soggy and stuck it had great gently fried texture - the textures played well together the sauce did not wilt or over power any note in this lovely symphony of fussili , it was well balanced and large portioned our kids split it - my husband had the vodka and crab penne and he finished the plate - the drinks were well made and the ambiance was aesthetically pleasing! I enjoyed the fine touch of a few fresh flowers on the table. I would love to come back and try the filet mignon with peppercorn sauce. You will not be disappointed here at the Italian Barrel - the wine list is extensive and although as someone with vitners in her family I usually enjoy looking it over and taking my time, we were with the kids but it was very clear they had many fine wines. I only wish I could've enjoyed my time a bit longer but with the kids we sort of pressed on to see the rest of New Orleans, they surely did not rush us and the outdoor seating looks like a lovely afternoon with European Mediterranean vibes. Even met a nice couple of patrons to chat with outside.
So, from where to start?
The service 5/5; outstanding!
The food 5/5; amazing!
The disert? Idk, we didn't take.
So the service was amazing, truly appreciate. The pasta Papardela is recommended, and the ribs wow.
For appetizers, take the cheese and sausages!
And for good wine, take the Gaja Ca'Marcanda Promis Toscana!
There were 8 of us and we were seated and served quickly and the staff were very friendly. Not one person was disappointed. The appetizers were sized to share. The penne Alla Vodka was delicious and had a generous amount of jumbo lump crab meat. I would highly recommend this Northern Italian restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. It was cold in the restaurant when we arrived at 11:45, and the music was too loud for my taste are the only knocks on the atmosphere. Would love to go back for the butternut squash soup.
The Italian Barrel is probably the most traditional Italian restaurant in the French Quarter. Step inside the cozy space and you find a piece of Italy imported straight from Italy to New Orleans…from decor to wine and food. Everything food-wise is very traditional Italian, as opposed to much of the Creole-Italian or modern Italian takes found in most of the area’s restaurants. Ingredients were fresh and well-prepared, and wines and oils were all high-quality and imported directly from Italy by the restaurant. Service was impeccable and very knowledgeable. All in all, if you’re craving an authentic Italian experience in the Quarter, look no further than The Italian Barrel. Prices are high, and for that reason only it did not make our recommended list, but in every other way we love this restaurant.
We stopped in without reservations but were seated within 10 minutes. Small venue but tables were arranged well. Staff was friendly and attentive, Rhonda was our server. Mussels appetizer was not as good as hoped but everything else was incredibly delicious. I had the veal porcini and it was perfect. I don't usually eat the accompanied pasta but I certainly did this time. Everyone else in our party raved about their choices. Diners appeared to be mostly locals and that says a lot in the French Quarter, which has many options. We will return.
Delicious Italian food and wine in a romantic atmosphere. Great staff. Highly recommend going here for an anniversary or a special event.
Great Food and Great Service. Its a small cozy place but so worth going to. The atmosphere works from romantic to just friends eating dinner. I know when in New Orleans you are told to go for the seafood or the Southern Fair but I'm telling you this place is worht going to.
Where do I start…. From the minute I walked in it was amazing!!! Shout out to Rocco for being the best of everything!!! The food is amazing and the service thanks to Rocco was even better if you could compare. If you want Italian in NOLA and want Italian this is the place to come!!! On a scale of 5 I give it a 10 for sure!!
Food was great. Staff was above the top amazingly friendly! It is such a great small place to eat! One of the people in my party is vegetarian and he had no issues finding something to order.
Awesome food and drinks! I got the Hugo drink, super tasty. The gnocchi alla patate was incredible. I really enjoyed the dinner overall and had a great experience. Plus free bread! Thanks to Donald for attentive and friendly service.
We went to the Italian Barrel for dinner during our stay in New Orleans! They had a good range of vegetarian options which we were looking for.. We really enjoyed the ambience. My drink was ok, nothing great. I did love the bread. We ordered Bruschetta for the appetizer--the filling was not proportional to the bread and was in excess all over the plate. We ordered Truffle and mushroom Ravioli and Fire roasted tomato ravioli. We enjoyed both of them, but again felt like the proportion of sauce was off to the ravioli on both plates. We also ordered sides which never came and we had to cancel them. I did love both the desserts--espresso creme Brule and chocolate profitorole! Highly recommend both the desserts.
Both the seared scallops and Sea Bass were cooked to a melting perfection.
Great selection of mocktails.
Staff were attentive and knowledgeable.
A pure delight.
Chef Sam has the absolutely the best ,freshest ingrediante ,It's perfect. Italian barrel is a favorite of the local top chefs of Nola. It's that good
Visiting New Orleans to celebrate the New Year during the pandemic has been quite a wonderful experience so far. Unfortunately not many top rated restaurants offer outdoor dining options. But so glad The Italian Barrel did. Their house salad and dressing were a wonderful starter and a very welcome change from the heavy, oily and carb-laden food we have been presented with these past few days. We had the lasagna and chicken parmigiana with sautéed Brussels sprout & pancetta on the side, with a little espresso and Tartufo al limoncello as dessert. Our very excellent server Kendall was professional, courteous, and attentive. We sat outdoors and enjoyed the romantic table-setting with small table heater and had a wonderful meal. The warm bread with olive oil and vinegar were a lovely start to the meal, and I wished I didn’t eat so much of it because the portions that followed were generous. Definitely need to return to try the veal meatball spaghetti and tiramisu as the restaurant ran out from serving New Year’s Eve patrons the night before. Thanks for a lovely evening.
There for thanksgiving price shock when bill presented with tip spent $260 for 2 people sitting at bar. So shocked didnt check bill too much but remember my turkey dinner special was $49 just for entre. Food was good well presented but for what we paid for bread, 2 dinners, 2 drinks, 2 desserts too much in my opinion.
White linen tablecloths and an elegance was enjoyable. Incredible wine selection and I ordered two cases of the wine we enjoyed. Mussels were incredible and the house salad with the homemade dressing was off the charts.
Really glad we stopped here after the Barkus parade. Did not have a rezzy, but we were given a table if we promised to conclude by 7:30. Started with the burrata, which I highly recommend (though it cost more than the lasagna my partner ordered). I went big with the veal chop and was not disappointed. Delicious. Despite the time constraints, the table service was outstanding. And, we were out the door by 7:29 . . .
Exquisite menu, and the dishes were accomodated for vegans. Thank you. Highly recommended - would advise not to seat outside if you want a quiet experience ;)
Wonderfulness decorated space that serves authentic homemade Italian food. A lot of unique recipes. The food is extremely fresh and delish. The staff are polite , friendly and very efficient. I had the Pesto Scampi and it had just the right amount of garlic and the shrimp were perfectly done. It's in the French quarter but it's very unique and we'll thought out space.
I wasn't actually able to sit down here. They were understaffed and even though they weren't full, they were taking a really long time to seat customers. However, the food smells really good. It's a nice restaurant. Next time I visit Nola I will revisit them.
I will start off by saying my standards are very high when it comes to Italian food, perhaps more so than the average person. I was torn between 2 and 3 stars so I settled on 3 because of the service.
First off, we had reservations, we were seated promptly for being about 15 minutes early. The noise level does get a bit loud when this place gets busy, and many tables are closer to each other than I would prefer prior to the virus recommendations. The table setting was nice but we never had our lantern lit when it got dark and this would have been nice.
We had the veal meatball for an appetizer, it is quite small for the price, and not sure how more than 2 people could share it. For me it tasted old, or frozen, it wasn't full of flavor from spices, but the sauce was great. The bread was not very good, no matter how much olive oil and balsamic you put on it. It was odd to see this kind of sliced bread at an Italian restaurant, tasted very much like ordinary bread from the grocery store baked in an oven to give the impression it was freshly made.
My daughter had the lasagna, she said it was good, but it was ordinary in look and flavor to me. Again to me it tasted fairly old and was being covered up with sauce to make it seem fresh. For me I had the chicken parmigiana and it was very old dry chicken, that had a slice of mozzarella added to the top that didn't help hide the dryness and age of the chicken.
Personally I felt most of the meal was frozen recooked food, and the quality didn't come close to matching their menu prices. Was it better than Olive Garden, you bet, but not by much. Cheers!
Absolutely love this place! Gnocchi is so fantastic! The server recommended the dolce sauce and it was heavenly! Our internal clocks were off so we got the restaurant to ourselves for a while. Almost like it was planned for easy romance! Will return on our next NOLA adventure!
Our favorite Italian restaurant in New Orleans. Awesome food and great staff! When you’re here you are treated like family. I asked if they could do a fish and pasta plate. They put together a beautiful seared halibut and fettuccine that was absolutely incredible.
Wonderful little quaint cafe in the quarter.
Beautiful place, Johnny was a perfect server, balancing attention and space. His knowledge of wines was impressive. Food has amazing flavor and it's obvious the chefs take pride in their work.
Great food. The only reason I gave a 4 star on service was it was lil slow. However, the server was on point. Must do in New Orleans
Great food, great people, great atmosphere. The super cool people we me at the table next to us loved it so much last night that they came back tonight. We will also dine here again!
Outstanding dinner at The Italian Barrel. Executive Chef and Owner Sam and her amazing staff gave us a wonderful dining experience. We cannot wait to return.
We got our food super quick and it was just fantastic. Very much recommend the truffle ravioli
We had wine and Italian food. It was amazing. Felt authentic. Being Indians we wanted a bit spicy food but making it authentic superseded our spice craving. The lady who served was very patient, helpful and extended her hospitality. She was the best! The ambience was good, they had amazing uniforms and cutlery. I loved everything about this place. They all had charming and positive faces though they were working hard.
Price to quantity is fair enough
Taste was good
Location is perfect
Multiple visits? Of course yes!
Excellent service, ambiance and food. We had bar seating since this was a last minute reservation. The bartender although very busy was pleasant and attentive. Our food choices of crab cocktail, house salad, pesto with shrimp and veal porcini was flavorful and filling. No room for dessert! We would definitely recommend giving the Italian Barrel a try while in NO. Weekday reservation at 7pm we found convenient parking across the street! That was a plus!
The Italian Barrel is genuinely the best spot for Italian in New Orleans. On Christmas Eve, I had dinner with a couple of friends in which we shared many dishes amongst the group. My absolute favorite were the pumpkin ravioli, porcini & truffle ravioli, and veal porcini. Everything was cooked perfectly and well-presented (I forgot to take a photo until after taking a few bites). Additionally, the dessert cocktails were amazing. I highly recommend the tiramisu martini or the clouds of sorrento.
Pictured is the porcini & truffle ravioli and the tiramisu martini.
Cosy italian restaurant In the heart of New Orleans. Vast choice of starters, first and seconds and desserts. Probably the best aglio olio e peperoncino on both sides of the Atlantic. Delicious ossobuco with polenta. Good selection of wines. Congratulazioni Samantha
Excellent food and service. Had the sea bass and spinach ravioli....both were delicious! My friend said the sea bass was cooked perfectly. Good wine choices and fresh food. Would definitely recommend this place. Excellent location!
Beautiful small restaurant with upscale service and good, if oversized plates.BUT….we waited for 20 mins past our reservation for our table and then another 20 mins for a waiter to acknowledge us. Front person working very hard, Wait person very competent but all in all we felt very rushed. Tried to take our entree order before we’d even gotten our appetizer, didn’t offer after dinner drinks or dessert, which would have bumped up our tab and her tip. My sense is that the ownership/management pressures the wait staff to turn tables, but I would expect a more leisurely pace for a restaurant with that reputation and the price. Didn’t feel as welcome as we expect to in small, Italian locally owned restaurants.
Food was great, veal chop was great.
Nice quiet atmosphere with friendly waiter. Good food. Located near the French Market.
Best bruschetta I’ve ever had. Steak cooked to perfection. Clams were flavorful and everything was fairly priced for the quality and flavor. Highly recommend the peppercorn sauce for the center cut filet!
Great ambience. Beautiful plating. Delicious food and nice portions. Will be back!
The atmosphere was pleasant and the noise level low. Our waiter was very good, attentive without being obtrusive. The three courses we had were truly excellent and the wine paired well. I would not hesitate in recommending this restaurant to anyone and will add it to my list for visits when in NOLO again.
The meal was not rushed but well timed for each course. The cost was reasonable considering the standard of the food. It is a great Italian eaterie.
I'm italian, i can tell the food is really like in italy. Coming from Parma I can say the use real Parmigiano and very good tomato sauce!
Even dessert are amazing! Excellent service!
Delicious authentic Italian food. Portions are small for the price. Nice wait staff. STRANGE odor in the place like dog urine. It was very strange.
Great escape when you get tired if Creole food. This little Italian spot is authentic, priced right and great service. Pesto scampi was excellent. Arugula salad was fresh with excellent quality miniature mozzarella balls, and a smooth balsamic. Bread was just okay, but all the good outweighed that small imperfection. Thank you for the final N.O. meal of our trip!
Nice Italian restaurant in a quiet area of the French Quarter
If you had enough alcohol and junk food and you’re looking for a proper dinner
Prices are on the high side
Amazing experience. The food was to die for and the service was second to none. Absolutely a must when in New Orleans.
Great atmosphere and ambiance. Great wait staff and the food was perfect as if I was eating at my Grandmother's kitchen.
The Lasagna melted in my mouth, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience.
Reminded me of a nice quaint neighborhood restaurant and bar. I'll definitely be back to try more of their menu.
Excellent Italian food.
A bit crowded seating, but a solid Italian restaurant.
The wait staff was excellent. New Orleans has several really top tier Italian restaurants and even though this one really tries it just didn't hit the mark for me either in the experience or the food.
For me it's as if they tried too hard with the wait staff (who were excellent) to make up for the execution with the entrée (where the were lacking).
We really really love this place! They have such great food and such a wonderful staff. The ambience is wonderful and this is such a great place right in the French quarter or a really good meal. If you’re in New Orleans make this one of your stops. This is a one of a kind New Orleans original. The owner, the staff, and the food is exceptional. Thank you Italian barrel
I mean it was just okay for me. The pasta was flown in so it was old, but they brag about it being authentic Italian noodles. It's eggs and flour. Do they think chickens in Italy or flour have a different taste. Having been to Italy this is not a thing to go on about. I ordered the lasagna and to be honest the sauce also tasted canned. It was, for lack of better words, tinny or institutional tasting. Perhaps there was too much tomato paste versus fresher ingredients. Crazy being in a food city whe I also like more meat. So, I don't understand why this place is crowded. To be honest the non discriminating palate will enjoy it. The bread was deliciously flavored. It was cooked properly. If I had a criticism it would be I wish the bread's color was darker with the original cook.
Great north Italian dishes
Great appetizers
Skip the mussels
Great pasta , Pena vodka and crab sauce was really good
Friendly service, tip added 20% for group of 5 ...
It was super fancy! We were visiting from out of town and stumbled upon this place and it was absolutely amazing! I got the lasagna and it was the best lasagna I have ever had! Amazing! If we visit again we will definitely be coming back!
Food, service, and atmosphere were great. A quiet spot to have a great meal.
Food is excellent. Bar service not so much. I put in an order for a wine and seconds later changed my mind and wanted a martini I asked the waitress if I could change. She said the order was already in. Fine but then it takes 15 minutes to get that wine.
Beautiful Christmas Decorations! 💚❤️💚❤️ …
Italian Barrel was excellent. Recommended by a local and it didn't disappoint. Lobster Ravioli was excellent as was the Penne with sausage. We ate outside and the noise could get loud from passing motorists, but it did not affect the Eve. Derek was a great server.
This is a terrific restaurant
Food was awesome
Small and intimate with outdoor seating
Pasta was excellent, so delicate and full of flavour!
Staff very accommodating. Restaurant bright and inviting.
Great food. Had delivery through Uber Eats while staying in the Courtyard by Marriott on St. Charles Ave. Fantastic Penne Alla Vodka dish. It was great portion size and fantastic taste.
Wonderful experience. Great food and exceptional wait staff. Can't wait to go back
One of the best meals I've had in my life anywhere. Very intimate but welcoming dining room. The staff was terrific. A destination restaurant. for me.. Next time I'm in New Orleans, I'll be back.
The food was good, however ask about prices for the specials - an appetizer special sounded good however after the bill came out it ended up being a $30 appetizer compared to the the other listed menu appetizers listed around 12-15. The app was Burrata and it was not good at all I’ve had better. It was more expensive then the average $20ish main pasta dishes. If your looking for average Italian this is your place to go but price wasn’t worth it. Service was great though! Atmosphere was 5+ star. Would not recommend specials!! I was very upset about it however did call the waitress back and asked “was that burrata really $30?”, she replied “yes” and she looked super nervous. I’ve been a server before and I decided to just pay the bill and not take it out on her. However after looking at other reviews this seems to be a pattern. Life lesson always ask for prices on specials.
My pasta was excellent my brothers Lasagne
Was mush and disappointing. The cocktails ordered were outstanding. Servers were excellent. After reporting that the Lasagna was unsatisfactory and approximately 1/3 eaten the restaurant didn't offer a alternative or complementary desert or discount.
Good Italian food in the French Quarter in an intimate space that is slightly pricey
Great food, good prices, great staff
The food was absolutely delicious! Our waiter was fabulous too. He was very attentive & helpful throughout the entire night. The restaurant is very cute & cozy, I really liked the whole atmosphere. A true New Orleans gem! We will definitely revisit again!
Not only is the food great, but they also have great side walk seating.
When you miss real Italian food, go here! You will never be disappointed! The sea bass is to die for and so is everything else the chef put on the menu!
My husband and I ate here for my birthday on 6/4/22
Our waiter was very polite, the food was fantastic
Would definitely recommend this restaurant for a great night out in New Orleans
The food was delicious. Very clean and spacious. Our waitress was a delight! Blonde lady with heavy accent. Thanks for the great service and food.
Absolutely amazing! Service, atmosphere and food is outstanding. A must do if you are in the French Quarter. We will be back!
Great experience! Excellent food and service. I will be back!
Nice atmosphere, service was good for being so busy. Food is not special, a step above Olive Garden but with a big price tag. Plenty of better restaurants for the money nearby (like Irene's).
We went there for our anniversary lunch date today. The place is so cute and romantic, beautiful atmosphere. I like that it was casual, but it’s suit and tie service. Service was awesome. Our waiter was very attentive. The drinks were strong and the food, the food was absolutely delicious. I had the Lobster Ravioli,he had Chicken Parmesan. I can’t say enough about the food.
The portions were perfect. I can’t wait to go back.
Stumbled into this place last minute and were seated quickly. It was fantastic. Delicious pasta and friendly service.
The most amazing staff and atmosphere for dinner with friends!
After a few days in NOLA we needed a break from the Cajun cuisine. As a final family meal before Tulane check-in my son stated he wanted Italian. After reading several reviews I decided on the Italian Barrel - SO HAPPY I DID!
First off our server, Olivia, was magnificent. A true professional, she never missed a beat.
We started with Bruschetta (which was really fresh and delicious) and two Hugo Spritz. The bartender is great and the cocktails and wine selection are for the true enthusiast. We settled on a bottle of Il Fauci Arcanum for the meal. Spot on.
For entrees we enjoyed chicken parm, kids split Penne Arrabiata (perfect spiciness), and I immensely enjoyed the Tagliata. This was a special that consisted of a PERFECTLY cooked beef tenderloin which was sliced and spread across a platter and then covered with arugula and fresh shaved Parmesan. The accompanying image just does not do the dish justice. It was phenomenal. In fact, everything was so good we splurged with three desserts: Spumoni Bomba, Tiramisu, and Profitterols. Recommend the Bomba if you want just one. Pair that with a cappuccino. Perfect meal.
Some comments about the price. Yes, this is a little more expensive. But as someone commented, "you get what you pay for!" I wouldn't change a thing. It was worth the money and when you are creating memories with the family, pay to have the professionals take care of the details. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Italian Barrel.
Our dinner last night was completely amazing. It was our anniversary and our daughter planned with the staff to treat us. Every moment was a delight. The food was exceptional as well as the service. The hostess greeted us as honored guest and made sure no detail was left undone! We can’t wait to eat there again when we return to New Orleans!
Wonderful experience. Our server Demi did a great job of taking care of us.
We enjoyed the burrata, Chef Samanthas fusili and peas (absolutely get this, it was phenomental) and the pumpkin ravioli. Our cocktails were very tasty and came to the table quickly.
The wine and cocktails and cheese/meat board were 5-Star all the way. Our entrees, Gnocchi w/ Gorgonzola and Veal Porcini were somewhat average. While my veal entree was cooked and presented perfectly, it lacked depth and complexity and could have been enhanced simply with a little salt or other flavor contrast. I would have added salt myself, but both salt and pepper grinders at our table were empty and I assume were for display only.
The restaurant is very cozy. It was difficult for my wife and I to converse during our meal without constantly asking the other to repeat themself. Our server was very attentive, professional, polite, and personable. I will definitely go back and try another entree because everything else was so great.
Excellent little Italian restaurant. Dinner for two ran just under $100. All of the entrees looked fantastic. A good selection of wines, but only one beer is served. Reservation are accepted, but we walked in for an early dinner at 6 and there was no crowd. The servers were attentive without being obtrusive.
5 course pre-fixe Christmas Day dinner was excellent!
Absolutely wonderful service! The food is phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were in New Orleans for the week and we after 5 days of amazing Cajun food we needed a change. We decided to come to the Italian Barrel and it was perfect!
Walk in party of 8 . They were amazing took wonderful care of us.
The gnocchi with gorgonzola cream sauce is the best Italian dish ANYWHERE. I eat there every time I'm in town.
The service was excellent: from the front of the house to the back. The atmosphere and decor was beautiful and cozy. Lastly, the food was wonderful. My family is from Italy and it is difficult to find food in the US that tastes like it was made in Italy and put on your plate but it does here. You will need to make a reservation, the space is small but you won't be disappointed. This is now on my 'must go' list when I come to New Orleans.
Be prepared in advance that the menu changes regularly and the things you see on Google maps menu, may not be there when you arrive.
The dining experience was truly a delight. Listen to the recommendations of your server.
Little bit spendy, very cozy quarters with your neighbors but the food was absolutely delicious.
The raised floor made me a little motion sick as traffic went behind me but that was a minor inconvenience. Glad to have this box checked.
My husband and I have been three times. The first time was excellent all around. The second time, we had a sassy waiter and the veal was terrible even after sending it back and trying again. The rest of our meal was perfect. The third time, the food was incredible, but the drinks were very watered down and not worth the $$$. It's very pricey, but when it's on point, it's worth it!
Gregory was a terrific server. The food was amazing. But the atmosphere was a huge star. What a lovely, cozy restaurant.
Loved it, a lot of delicious food and very quaint
I ordered the porcini truffle ravioli and honestly this was one of the best things I have EVER eaten in my 47 years on earth. No joke. Absolutely delicious.
I honestly can't say enough positive things about this restaurant. The chef serves only the freshest and best quality Italian cuisine. My best friend from New York was even pleasantly surprised, that's amazing coming from her. It's a must go to while in New Orleans.
Absolutely GREAT! The small cheese board is huge. The crab panne and vodka sauce is so good. Busy place but our server was super on his game and we lacked for nothing. Just a wonderful experience all the way around.
So good, we had to eat here three times, in one week!
Went in for a quick lunch, and was pleasantly surprised. The greeting, ambiance, aromas, and staff were as welcoming as my Italian Grandma's Sunday dinner. I've only been a New Orleans resident for 1 year (ex Brooklyn), but I have found my Northern Italian comfort home.
It's not that there are not great Italian spots in NOLA, but I've found none that match the delicate layering of flavors like Italian Barrel.
Wine list can satisfy even the most discriminating sommelier. And if you like desert, you will be back, time and again, to indulge in old favorites, and creative adaptations of classic italian treats.
My martini was masterfully concocted by the "Rookie", under the watchful eye of the affable manager. Dont risk future regret!!
Book your table now!! Romantic at night🥰
We love this restaurant and it is our "go-to" for delicious Italian when we are in town.
The service here is fantastic! Our server and her peers exuded genuine enthusiasm about the food, were docent quality informed about the menu, and made us feel like honored guests. She completely embodies the atmosphere of an upscale intimate setting.
The food is of a unique aesthetic, and may not be the right fit for some who have been feasting on the heavily salted and seasoned fare of other NOLA restaurants. The flavors are nuanced and subtle. The ingredients are clearly high quality and the chef has a very distinct style though.
I ordered the special fettuccine with an osso buco red sauce. It was delicious, but the meat sauce to pasta ratio was off and I could have used about 50% more sauce. My partner had the lasagna and I’m assuming the ground meat used was very lean as the texture was not as rich as I would expect. The best dish at the table was the veal chop, cooked perfectly to really bring out the natural flavor of the veal.
For dessert I will always get a tiramisu. It was not overly sweet, which I expected and honestly was refreshing, but it was soggier than I’d like. Our friends had the limoncello dessert and it tasted freezer-burned.
That said, chef Samantha’s intent comes across clearly and if you’re open to letting down your food guard and embracing an artist’s vision, give this place a try.
The Italian Barrel is a lovely restaurant nestled on the corner in the French Quarter that has some truly excellent cuisine choices. I visited this location with a large party, which was easily handled by a professionally attired and very efficient staff. We sat outside enjoying the sights and sounds of the French Quarter on one side, and the waterfront behind us. On the inside was a cozy interior with plenty of patrons, a very neat and tidy presentation within the atmosphere of a deep southern home. There was not a single meal or glass of wine that did not meet my party's expectations, and costs were on par with similar restaurants in the French Quarter. If you desire to break into a true Italian experience, this would be an excellent choice.
Glad we found this Italian gem. Great food and service.
Never disappoints! Whether you are looking for the full Italian dining experience or just a plate of homemade pasta, you will enjoy the Italian Barrel! Lasagna with house made pasta melts in your mouth!
We had an excellent seat on the balcony, with a good view over the streets and park. Waiters were fast and friendly. Food was good to really tasty. What a excellent way of presenting the dishes, We good a lot of good fibes of our photoshoots on Instagram. Overall view very good and worth the dollars.
Wow whatta lunch. Chilean sea bass, spinach, 4 cheese potatoe souffle and gnocchi drenched in gorgonzola...all to die for!! Nice atmosphere and staff. The bubbles were excellent too!!
We came in here knowing exactly what we wanted. I looked to my right and saw all these awards. this was the right choice. The all’s vodka pasta was phenomenal. Bravo.
Beautiful, intimate dining experience. Phenomenal food. Recommend the Osso Buco so highly! Drinks were well crafted. An absolute gem.
Would give this place a 5 star, but I was disappointed that it was "out" of many of the items I wanted. Food was delicious, and atmosphere was great. But how do you run "out" of bruschetta? With a limited menu, running out of options is not acceptable for these prices.
Bruschetta was delicious. Lasagna was smooth and the veal parmigiana was the best I've had in a long time. We have been here before and the food , service, and atmosphere are consistently great and will bring us back when we are in New Orleans.
This place was AWESOME!! Our server Michelle was WONDERFUL and the details were exquisite, the food was THE BEST!! If you like martinis I had the Bellini Martini and the Nutella Martina and they were the BEST I’ve had! The Tiramisu, the chef’s mother’s recipe, was DELICIOUS!! We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND! This will be on the TOP aid our list on future visits to New Orleans! And it’s roght next to the French Market where we walked off this DELICIOUS meal! ENJOY!
Great traditional Italian food. Very few places in NOLA pull off spaghetti and meatballs this well. Our server Alex was excellent as well.
For a delicious Italian food in the French quarter
Jesus Christ, this place has RUINED gnocchi and pasta for me, I will never again have anything this good. I now have to dedicate my life to the culinary arts to reach this bar of exemplary-ness. I ordered the pasta alla arrabbiata, the gnocchi my lady ordered was insanely good as well.
Beautiful restaurant with a warm, inviting atmosphere! The food and service were fantastic. Portions we're big - I couldn't finish my chicken parm no matter how much I wanted to!! Loved this place!!
Gorgeous little restaurant with some phenomenal dishes. I'd recommend reservations if you think you'll be there at busier time.
EXCELLENT Italian food and the service here is wonderful. Great selections of wine and located in a great area of the city!
Excellent food, great service. The wine list is based on Northern Italian wines which combine perfectly with the food, which is also from Northern Italy. There is wine for all tastes and pockets. We tried a Tuscan Rose which was excellent and an Antonori super Tuscan red, brilliant,.
Salad s are excellent. House dressing is delicious. Calamari/shrimp salad fabulous. Chix-Parm cooked to perfection. Veal meatball and spaghetti as good as the glass of wine. The bread came out a little slow. But as I say, if you notice the service, the conversation must suck.
Great meal tonight with the familia. Everyone loved their entrees. Service was very personable as expected down in the south. Homemade porcini mushroom ravioli in truffle sauce was divine!
This place currently has a 4.6 rating, and that's shockingly low considering how damned good the food is at this restaurant. My family has been taking trips to NOLA for decades and the city is truly a "Foodie's" paradise. Italian Barrel's Chef/Owner, Samantha Castagnetti, is a master and while I have never personally met her, I feel like we're family just from eating her food. This is the best Italian, if not restaurant, in New Orleans. You are seriously missing out if you don't reserve a table for your next trip.
Porcini truffle ravioli is amazing. Also meat and cheese boards are incredible.
OK yet overpriced food, so so service. Coming from NYC and Chicago I don't get what hype is about. Food is just OK, not innovative, no wow factor (yes i do expect wow factor if i am eating $32 pasta). Service slow and at times non existent despite half empty restaurant. There are much better options in the NOLA.
Food was incredible across the board. Quiet, romantic, and excellent traditional Italian. Service was prompt and attentive from everyone we met.
Dinner for two including drinks, appetizers, and dessert came in under $100.
Everything from the Olive tasting and mussels we had for an appetites to the pan seared Seabass served with white beans was delicious! The service was very good as well. She was helpful and informative while we ordered and timely with delivery. She was pleasant and not over bearing at all. The dining room was crowded but fun like most New Orleans restaurants are. Our corner table had a good view of the hopping everyday life on the far side of the French quarter. Envie, a popular and awesome coffee shop, is right across the street. Esplanade street is just one block away. We will definitely be back to the Italian Barrel!
Great Italian on Frenchmen Street! Wife and I really enjoyed the meal here, especially after a long weekend of Creole and Cajun food in the French quarter. We made a reservation only about thirty minutes before, and when we arrived a little early, they were still able to seat us right away. Had the Italia salad, which featured fresh imported Bufula Mozzarella! Yum! Wife had the Pene Alla vodka, which was delightful, and had plenty of fresh crab. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pene Alla ariabiatta, which had a great balance of spice and sweetness! Wine suggestions from our waitress were perfect, and unfortunately, we were too stuffed for dessert. Also loved the fact that we were so close to Frenchmen Street, so were able to walk down the street to see awesome music.
We love The Italian Barrel! The servers are great, know their specials, and pairings. Personal favoirtes: Pumpkin Ravioli, Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli, and Chicken Parm, as well as the chocolate salami for dessert. 4 stars, because ultimately, we suggest sticking to the Italian classics they know best.
Absolutely top service, great food, loved it.
Very delicious food. The chicken parm and gnocchis were fabulous. They give nice fresh bread as soon as you sit down. They also offer Peroni which is a wonderful Italian beer. Make sure you call and make a reservation especially during the busy season or on the weekends.
My wife and I both loved the food here. The service was fast and friendly and it has great ambiance. I'm definitely coming back the next time I'm in town. Try the truffle ravioli.
The waitress was amazing and the lasagna was good. My dish was too salty, the waitress did everything she could to make the experience great. She succeed beyond expectations. I recommend the tiramisu.
While in New Orleans we wanted a different type of food one night while on vacation and Italian was definitely a different cuisine than Cajun and the Italian Barrel was an excellent choice! Very delicious food and good wine! Would go back again when craving a different taste other than cajun.
The best Italian cuisine in New Orleans by far. Extremely professional and friendly staff and very conscientious about COVID. I look forward to many more visits to this incredible restaurant.
The food is excellent. We had a porcini pasta dish that was delicious and a veal chop that was melt in your mouth tender and tasty. The food reminded me of Italy. A few simple, fresh and high quality ingredients made with skill into a wonderful meal.
This is the second time we have been here and we love, love, love this place. One of our favorites in a town of amazing resturants. The sea bass is to die for, my wife loved her filet mignon. The bruschetta is the best in town and the desserts are sinful. Our waiter tonight was attentive and we were allowed to enjoy our dinner at a leisurely pace. Yes it is pricey and it's a special occasion place for us, but the total experience is worth every penny. Our anniversary is in March. I think I know where we are going.
Good quality Italian in an otherwise saturated neighborhood of creole cuisine. The only thing that was completely ridiculous was the bread the bring to the table it's like a panini pressed white bread that is lackluster all around but other than that the pumpkin ravioli was pretty good lasagne was great
Fantastic food and great service as well.
Great food. Great atmosphere and wonderful staff. Only thing I have to say is it is a bit pricey
Late lunch is the perfect time to go. A SMALL, quaint, charming authentic Italian bistro completely unexpected in Creole country. We had a simple lunch of salad, Tomato Moz & Basil, and Prosciutto & melon. We shared. Because of the time we arrived, the staff was at a minimal, but professional and informed. 4 perfect ingredients in the "Italia"! Tomatoes were ripe & firm, basil fresh, olive oil exquisite, and fresh mozzarella was sublime...I have never tasted a more perfect combination. Completely impressed. The Prosciutto was chilled and didn't allow the fat to melt, but that is my only complaint. It is a very small place and don't try to get up to use the restroom, but who would want to leave the table? Food was simply fabulous.
What an unexpected find!
For our last night in NO, we planned on going to Frenchmen St (NO's local "Bourbon St") for music and food. Try as we might, none of the "restaurants" in Frenchmen took reservations. We later discovered the reason as they were all a bar type settings w/ finger food only.
In anycase, at the last minute, we found this spot close to Frenchmen and decided to eat here. We got seats at about 8pm on Wed night but I highly recommend getting a reservation. Place was small, very cosy and I loved the atmosphere. We tried the special that night which was the Chilean seabass. I swear it was 4 inches thick and just cooked perfectly. Saved room for the chocolate mousse. Everything we had was fantastic and I can only imagine the other items on the menu had we gone back again.
Servers and host were very friendly and great. A little on the pricier side but the food and setting made up for everything.
Amazing food and wine, even though I'm dairy-free. Tuna Carpaccio appetizer, mussels in white wine sauce, and rare (truly rare) filet mignon, with sophisticated wine pairings. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful - michelle... ask for her!!! You wont be sorry.
Most excellent dining experience. Service was astounding and the meal one of our best Italian dinners of all time. Highly recommended.
Delicious food! Great service. Beautiful atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor seating available.
If you're looking for real authentic Italian food this place is for you. Everything was absolutely perfect and the service was excellent! Thank you Jason, Carrie and Sam, you have an amazing staff and even more amazing food!
The staff was incredibly knowledgeable about the food and the service was excellent, but the food left me and my friends wanting a little more. Flavors were good but we felt they could be refined
Great food and atmosphere! Good place to enjoy a nice Italian meal in the middle of New Orleans while soaking in the vibrancy of the city.
Two times I have tripped to New Orleans and twice I have eaten at the Italian Barrel leaving completely and utterly satisfied. The Italian Barrel was started by a native Italian whom journeyed to the United States to support her mother back home. I remember meeting her and believed if there I'd never met a person more down to earth. She's left back home now and sold her place to a new establishment but her spirit and the restaurant's culinary excellence has not left. What was once a small corner restaurant with three tables has now become an extended, refurnished and redone medium-sized restaurant. The French Quarter is represented in the architecture and the spacing is just comfortable enough to fit a good sized party. What makes this restaurant divine is its chef and its food. Each plate is made with love and care. The selections are prime Italian food the way Mother used to make it. Seafood and pasta. Those are this lovely place's specialty. The dessert mind you has yet to be rivaled by any other location in NOLA apart from the Beignets down the street, even those seem unworthy. I can only hope that when I return, this place does not lose its charm, its eagerness to impress, nor its appeal to those who wish to experience a good serving of Italian food reminiscent of Sicily itself.
Suggestions from the menu:
Jumbo Lump Crab Meat,
Chicken Parmesan (a must-try; two big chicken servings with a healthy dose of fettucine alfredo--it is by far, the only place I will ever eat this dish again),
and the Tiramisu
Carrie, Donald and Nick took such great care of us even in the craziness of Saturday’s Krewe du Vieux parade. As a service industry veteran, I appreciate how calm, cool and collected they all were. The food and drinks were delicious and on-point as well. We cannot wait to go back!
Beautiful atmosphere, courteous and professional staff. The food prep displays are beautiful, and the taste is so authentic. Every chance I get I'm visiting the Italian Barrel.
A true Italian restaurant, not creole Italian. Have never had a bad meal there. Beautiful place and great location on the back side of the quarter. I recommend this place as much as any in the city.
Excellent food, great wine and the best Chicken Parmesan we have ever had. Come for dinner walk to Frenchmen for music.
Truly loved it. Quaint, excellent service and food you want to come back too!! The wine selections is awesome and very reasonably priced!! We are looking forward to returning w/ our friends.
Pretty authentic Italian .. super friendly.. great pasta .. equally good wine ... One of the better meals I had in new Orleans.. despite going to the "better" fine dining restaurants in town ...
My family and I were hungry so we just went into the first restaurant we came by, and it was excellent. Delicious food and timely service. My chicken parmigiana was tender and filling.
Amazing entrees and appetizers, generous portions, delicious cocktails in a beautiful setting. Highly recommend to all!
I love the atmosphere, and the food is fresh. Flavors are simple, but perfect. Not overly salted "Italian" food like most places in town. Love it.
Amazing Italian food. The chicken parmigiana was so good. Huge chicken portion with the pasta and it is smothered in cheese and an amazing tomato and cream sauce.
Highly Reccomended.
The place is cozy and great, veal meatballs were very good as well as the appetizers, the service was above and beyond but not to a level of bugging us.
Will surely visit again!
Best Italian food in New Orleans! The staff is very friendly, and the food is VERY GOOD. It’s not cheap, but you get a quality meal prepared just for you.
We decided to have our last meal there and were so impressed with their hospitality and of course their delicious Chicken Parmesan, that was Fantastic!!!!
Will definataly go back for more!!!! Thanks so much from Kansas City, Missouri :)
Amazing experience!!!! Wife and I went for lunch and we went with our dog. The waitress had treats for our dog!!! They serve our dog water too. Just amazing! Food was outstanding!
Stumbled accross this place and the food was exceptional. I would highly recommend Chilean Sea Bass, it will melt in you mouth. Other had Veal and raved about how good it was.
This little restaurant is just perfect. The lasagna was better than grandma's. Sorry grandma but it was so light and flavorful! The service was timely and friendly. Just a great find.
Great place for lunch on a gloomy Monday.
My server Michelle was a delight.very proper service and the food was lovely
I Love Love Love This Place! The food was delicious. The Service Superb! The atmosphere was Outstanding!
The staff, especially Blake treated us like royalty. Awesome food, drink & atmosphere. One of our favorite restaurants.
This place with the low expectations name was outstanding. A bit cramped but NO is that way. Great service, good, wine and decor. Reminded us of Italy! So go forth!
Every bit of this meal was perfect including the the service and the ambiance. I definitely recommend the Mussels and the Penne alla Vodka if you are a fan of seafood!
Delicious food with impeccable service!
Great food! Fast service. Michelle and Nelson were awesome. We will be back and highly recommend. Make reservations!
The food is delicious. I found the crowd a little on the loud side but the service was excellent.
Great service. Recommendations were on point. Had a craving for chicken parm. Better than expected. Desert & apps were delicious. A bit expensive but very nice.
Very Big and tasty Tomato Mozarella from Nola 🤩🤤
We returned a second night to the Restaurant and had Filet Mignon With Gratin 🤤🤩😍 loved it.
Very friendly Personal
Thank u
Was nice eating @ u
Beautiful, cozy restaurant. Great service. Food was decent but nothing special. Quite pricey. Kind of a date night restaurant.
Food was amazing. Service was better. Can’t go wrong.
Delicious food, lively space.
Smallll portions and expensive. The manager did care though and gave us more food, but $21 for a slice of lasagne is dumb as hell.
One of our favorites! The food and services are always excellent!
Amazing! And they squeezed us in without a reservation - we were so grateful because the food was delicious!
Food was excellent but the best part was the service of the two waitresses who were very patient and sang a beautiful rendition of Happy birthday to my daughter.
Delicious! Our server, Hill, was so nice. The chicken parmesan and shrimp scampi were both excellent.
The food was excellent! Truly Italian! Loved it, the staff is great! We will definitely go back!
Best italian ever! My hubby is italian and grew up eating it.. he said it was the absolute Authentic Italian.. we will definitely come back
Food was good, but overpriced. Great service. Very strict with covid stuff.
A wonderful menu and fantastic service. The steak and lasagna were excellent!
Very cosy, accommodating staff and excellent food. Prices are what can be expected for upscale Italian in a touristy district.
Nice place, but there are other more interesting places (I don't know about other Italian restaurants, but regarding general food there are better places in the city). I recommend, but not as the first option.
Ambiance is so loud you almost have to scream to carry on a conversation. The food used to be top notch, now I find it to be just good.
Food is amazing! Atmosphere is awesome. Great spot.
Excellent Italian! Generous portions with quality ingredients. Loved our server. Thank you, we will be back
delicious food, great service, perfect location
Best pumpkin ravioli. Veal chops were FANTASTIC. Service was excellent

At the edge of the French Quarter, this is an excellent restaurant excellent cuisine, excellent prices. In layman's terms "good groceries .
This restaurant is amazing!! The owner has the pasta shipped directly from Italy from the oldest pasta makers. Everything is so fresh!!
We didn't have a reservation but they fit us in a very small quiet spot in the back of restaurant. Foods and service was excellent.
The food, cocktails, and service were an exquisite!
Probably the best pasta I've ever had! The fettuccine crema was the dish is had, and truly was delicious yet simple.
Cozy, intimate, Italian and delicious. Their pasta is made in house with traditional and special menu items that are all delicious
Everything our table ordered was delicious. The fettuccine crema and lasagna were superb.
Nice restaurant very good food!
Fantastic food, great service. Pricey but a great experience. The only thing missing was background music
Fantastic food, great atmosphere and a friendly and classy staff. Extremely happy with our experience here.
The whole experience was incredible and the food was absolutely amazing
Lamb was good. Wasn’t the star of the dish... should have been. You shouldn’t like the sides more than the main dish.
Loved it! Great service, good wine...and I'm particular about sausage...this was about the best I've had...
It is a must to eat there. Service is excellent and the food is the best Italian food in New Orleans.
4 stars because the portions are to small and our table for 4 was very small. I feel you can't enjoy your meal because of that.
Just fantastic. Great Italian fare with excellent service. Upscale with a cozy romantic feel.
Highly recommended.
Best authentic Italian restaurant in NOLA! Highly recommended!
If you feel to have Italian food in New Orleans, this is the right place to go : good product, fine food and great service
A great experience overall, and our service was excellent. It was just a little pricey for what you got, otherwise it would be five stars easy.
Not bad but better places in town. Tried to upsell too much. Not many red sauce dishes. Average.
Nice break from the standard fare. Well-prepared Italian food with good service in a subdued atmosphere.
Very romantic experience. You forget where you are. Thank you specifically to Jesse, a wonderful server. We wish him the best.
Amazing Italian. Veal osso bucco, pumpkin ravioli, white chocolate covered raspberry ice cream.....stuff dreams are made of

Really great food. Nice and close to Frenchmen street for some live jazz afterwards
The Italian Barrel is not sanitary I ordered food from there and I found rat feces in My Soup horrible service the owner is very rude and I found cigarette ashes on my plate of mussels and clams I recommend that whoever eats there make sure that everything is right
Great food, staff was not great.
Food was lukewarm and had to be returned. Specials overpriced! But service was excellent!
Very good food.
Excellent food. Highly recommended
The top of the list is the Chilean sea bass
