Reviews of Mother's Restaurant
Lauren McCoy
They don’t need my stars because they have such an excellent reputation without Google. But, I want to give them all my stars. I’ve been in town three days and already been there twice- dinner and then lunch. Shrimp creole with grits was incredible. The Ralph- amazing. Buttermilk biscuits- out of this world. Don’t miss this restaurant- it is worth the line!! Oh, and try the bread pudding!!

10 out of 10 must try again. This place was delicious. We went for lunch one day during my conference and turned around and went back for dinner and lunch the next day. Food was delicious and the service was okay. We sat in the third room where the bar was and the nice gentleman ( Caucasian young man very tall) was very attentive despite being the only person working that section. He deserves a raise and a title change.
If you're ever in New Orleans, please stop in and have a taste. Everything was delicious but the grill fish was seasoned by my ancestors and I loved it.

Here's the short version: the service is excellent; The portions are gigantic; and some of the food is really good and some of it is rather average in my opinion and my experience of going to soul food restaurants for more than 50 years.
If you're a soul food fan, and I mean a serious fan, there may be better options. But if your vacationing in New Orleans and looking for a plentiful meal that two could share, mothers is an excellent affordable option.

The food was great and the team was amazing. The ham was delicious and moist. The cheesy grits were very flavorful. The red beans and rice were spot on. I had the debris sandwich and it was AMAZING! They also have a homemade spicy vinegar concoction that really married well with the beef. Will definitely be back.
Tee Cakes
Hmmm where to begin with this one? The service and Mimosas are good. The food looks good but lacks seasoning. The grits are creamy but bland. Biscuits are fluffy. Catfish fried to perfection, but again the seasoning is lacking. Hot sauce should be an option, not a requirement for seasoning.
Not sure if the food is always like this. Essence Fest weekend applied a significant amount of pressure on the local businesses.

Making my rounds trying as much food as possible in The Big Easy. Mother’s restaurant was recommended by local friends of a chef we sat with on our flight. I had the Shrimp Creole and bread pudding. They were both delicious, although they didn’t photograph particularly well. Service was great and there was plenty of seating and little wait. My husband had the ham, but maintains, his is better. :-) He loved the green beans. A friend had the gumbo and she loved it. I have another place on my list to try the gumbo though.
I am in foodie heaven!

Not only is the hospitality warm, welcoming and friendly. The food is over the top delicious. Just can't pick one favor. Everything I put in my mouth was so scrumptious. Soft shell crab is a must. You definitely won't be disappointed if you eat here.

Look for lines when you go places in NOLA because that's where the good stuff is, and Mother's is no exception. The staff is lovely and efficient, the signature Bloodys are delicious, and the food is very good.
Also there is nothing 'greasy spoon' about this place, despite that being in the descriptor. It's in a really cool industrial space that is both funky and a clear sign that their priorities are straight-- you spend the money on making good food and people will come. (And they do. We waited for nearly two hours for a table for brunch and regretted nothing. NOTHING.)
Speaking of good food, if the sign says 'Best Baked Ham' and you like ham even a little bit, you really (really.) have to order the ham. Will never eat baked ham again unless it's from Mother's-- it's the most fork tender, juicy piece of ham I have ever had. Well worth the wait and will definitely be back to try other dishes on the menu.

This is just my personal preference but I’m not sure if this is my type of food. I probably ordered wrong too. The fried chicken was good. Juicy and hot. The ham was just okay. It looked more like a pork chop. I was a little disappointed because I saw some good looking ham going to the kitchen.
I didnt have to wait long at all to order and was able to grab a seat inside.
Seems like a lot of celebrities tend to eat here and it was recommended by a local. But again, just not my favorite type of food to eat.
Papa George Maxson
We ordered takeout and it was ready on time the salads were delicious. They had sweet potato pie that we’ve been really looking for. Saved me the last brownie when we called. The line was out the door amazing. Nice folks working there as well. They can afford to use a little better plastic wire

We tried the ferdi, jambalaya, baked ham, plate, red beans and rice, potato salad, grits, cup of cabbage, green beans with tomato, and two lemonades. All hot and full of flavor. The bread was very fresh and helps elevate the ferdi sandwich even more. Portions were great. The lemonade was very sweet and smooth. Not a fancy place, but great food at very reasonable prices. The service was also very good. Be prepared to wait in line a bit, but it moves fast and will make you that much hungrier.
Chris Chavez
Mothers, what else is there to say! The wait was about 15 mins, but the line moved fast. This is a classic and has been around forever. The waitstaff is awesome, quick. I had the debris, I have never had a meaty sandwhich with mayo, and pickles. My girlfriend had the fried fish, oysters and shrimp, so crispy and great. Oh, I had the Cheesy, grits, great flavor, some of the best I've ever eaten. If your around, please check this out, my 2 cents.
Alex Park
Renowned local restaurant.
Well managed waiting line and quick to order inside. Loving historically old fashioned but still good taste.
It was mediocre pricing but I’m satisfied with overall quality of foods and services.
I highly recommend if you can’t afford other luxury restaurants nearby.

This place was recommended to me by multiple people, so I definitely had to check it out while in town. We stopped in for breakfast. The omlets were great. They give you a TON of cheesy grits. The grits did not have a whole lot of flavor though. The omlets were pretty good and the biscuit was awesome. The service was awesome as well. Overall, we are not huge grits fans, so not sure if we would come here all that often, but I do see why so many people like it and recommend it.
Andrew L
Ordered the creole shrimp and grits and the roast beef sandwich.
Grits were amazing and so was the sandwich.
Service was amazing and would 100% eat here again a solid 7.7 out of 10

Food here is so delicious!!! This place was packed Sunday for lunch—it’s cafe style, you order food at the register then go find a table, and a staff will grab your receipt and bring back your food items. Service was a bit slow, it took a while before our food came out.
But the food definitely makes up for the wait! Everything is amazing here—too favorites were the Soft Shell Crab Platter, Seafood Platter, Crawfish Étouffée, and Blackened Ham. The Famous Ferdi Special was good too. Portions are very generous and there’s a huge selection of items to try!

Decided to stop by for breakfast! Breakfast Special for $13 — comes with two eggs any style, choice of one meat, regular grits, and biscuit or toast. We decided to get two over easy eggs, their famous baked ham, and biscuit. Cafeteria style, quick line up, order and pay in front and then find a spot to eat! Things move quick and the portions were big - glad we shared the breakfast special between two people!

The Po Boys live up to the hype. Got the debris. Meat was perfectly cooked and juicy. Bread was fresh and soft. Also liked the jambalaya and crawfish ettouffee. Sweet potato pie was very delicious too. Rice and beans, cheese grits were nothing special however. Do yourself a favour and try their Po Boys. Line ups can be long during the day but it moves fast. We went an hour before closing, ordered and got seated immediately. The bloody Mary was a bit too salty. Lemonade was refreshing and not overly sweet. 5 stars for the Po Boy.
Ashley
I came here twice in one weekend! Love, love, loved it. The shrimp creole (not pictured) and red beans and rice are amazing. The cabbage was super savory and light. I wasn’t a fan of the bread pudding and in my opinion it ranks very low compared to other restaurants that sell it in the city. I went later in the day both times and the line was not long at all.
Dana Giles
First time trying this New Orleans staple and I was not really wowed with the food. I ordered the quarter fried chicken with red beans and rice with potato salad. The chicken to me didn't have any flavor to it and was a little dry. The potato salad was bland as well. I did really like the red beans and rice with the smoked sausage and other meat inside it. My wife had the bowl of gumbo that she said needed some help with extra seasoning. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I Don't think I would go back tho.
Harmony Edge
The food is amazing. We had Po Boys and the gumbo, grits, and jambalaya. Way more food than we could eat but it tasted so good you wanted to try!!! Defitely a must to try while in New Orleans.
P.S. Don't let a long line scare ya...they move it along very quickly.
Marisa McInturff
Mother's is NOLA cooking at it's best. We stopped in for breakfast, and it was so good we ate again for dinner.
The line outside was long, but it moved quickly. This is a MUST if visiting NOLA.
Crissy Bushman
I finally got to try Mothers! I've lived here for 14 years and the lines have always been too long.
We decided to go for breakfast and we were not disappointed. I got the veggie omelet and a biscuit. Very tasty! The biscuit was perfection! We also had some bloody Marys to start our day! Those were also very good.
Service was great! It's incredible how many people get served there every day. It's a big place and always crowded. I'd like to try lunch or dinner now.
Anna T
Food is great, however waiting in line, as for me, is not worth it.
Service is terrible, staff members from the kitchen so unpleasant to people in line. If I haven't stood in line for over 30 min, I would have left after hearing that people are not standing right and blocking their way🤦♀️ Then cashier lady suddenly left saying she is going to the bathroom and did not come back🙄 I saw her later in the kitchen, but other lady who covered did not start for next 10-15 min. Imagine staying in line outside, then in line inside, and when you are almost there, no one is taking the orders. It is ridiculous for place that has each wall covered with famos faces:-) Do celebrities get the same service?!🤔
Maybe if you are planning to come during slow hours, that would be better decision
Heidi Padilla
Crazy busy, but with food that good it's understandable! It's small, but they have their routine to make sure people will have a place to sit and their food brought to them. Being from the west coast, we'd never heard of red cream soda so we had to try that. Everything was super tasty!
Jim Vosler
Don't let the decor fool you this place is legit. Food is prepared well, great selection and large serving. We had the mothers breakfast, two eggs, meat toast or biscuit with grits. Busy place but they get you in and out fast.
Haojun Li
Great food friendly staff. The environment is very casual so expect excellent food with minimal service. The food is simply excellent. I would 100% come back again and get huge portions had I more time.
Femi Sulyman
This is a deli style establishment. The fried chicken and jambalaya were pretty good. They serve the typical New Orleans comfort foods in a casual setting.
Chris Luebke
Yes. This is exactly what everyone says it is. Wait in line. It moves faster than you think. Order at the register. Get your drinks when you pay. Find a seat. They bring you the food. Yes this is a historic building and not much has changed other than the prices it seems. I got a grilled chicken Po-boy and fries. Wife got seafood gumbo and red beans with rice. Good portions = good value. Easily the best Po-boy I ever had. Crusty fresh roll. Fries were above average.
Joseph Henderson
Great place to eat. I ordered to go. The staff was really friendly and the grits with shrimp creole was fantastic. I also enjoyed the biscuit. I am giving 4 stars because I ordered 2 eggs scrambled but didn't receive it. I still recommend
JJ Jones
Excellent food. The breakfast special from 7 - 9am is one of the best deals ever. More food than you can even eat. Legendary establishment. Everyone has eaten here!
Erik Hempel
I hear you really have to come here for breakfast, but unfortunately I’m not the biggest fan of eggs which probably diminished my experience. Legendary place. I had the seafood gumbo (7.5/10 for me as it is good but if you have family / friends from New Orleans who can cook they would do it better) , the baked ham (5/10 as it was honestly way to dry) and the Red Beans (9.1/10 those were freaking delicious!). They have a huge menu tho and I would definitely say it is worth trying!
Michael Cassis
Lovely New Orleans traditional place! One of the musts for visitors. Sausage and the peace maker was great as well as the bloody mary! Went there for breakfast and had to queue. It was very heavy and fat too! But do not regret going there and would go back for sure.
John Sharpe
Came here for the first time as a 10 year old (over 30 years ago). Found this place with my parents and it was a highlight of our trip. Visited again this past week with my wife and 3 kids. It was fun to relive Mothers. We all got shrimp Po Boys and they were every bit as good as I remembered. The nostalgia was real. Pricing is reasonable and an excellent place to come with family.
Liralen Li
Love this place to bits. The enormous menu is filled with good food, and the counter style ordering before you sit a table where the servers get your ticket to get your food for you is from another era. The debris is always a good choice, but all the staples from the grits to the biscuits, all the fried seafood and po-boys, the pancakes to the ham are always done up right, fresh and hot. The coffee is good and strong and the servers do their best to get you what you need. This time we got the etouffee with cheesy grits and a lovely biscuit, and it was amazingly good and just what we needed on a rainy day.
Nette Rab
I saw the sign that they had the world famous ham, so i wanted to give them a try.
Order at the counter and have a seat. The restaurant is pretty good in size, and the service was good while ordering and the servers delivering the food. There was an older lady working scolding people to read the sign that says "don't block walkway."
Lol... so people READ THE SIGN.
Food:
Pancake
Side of Ham
Debris (Shredded Beef on Grits)
The pancake was ok. I took a bite and didn't eat the rest. The ham was extremely dry and had no taste at all. So I didn't eat that either. The beef and grits were thehighlightst for me. That was good delicious. I would recommend it.
Steven Golon
Meme was friendly and fun. She made us feel welcome during our delicious home cooked meal. "Famous Ferdi Special"and "Worlds Best Baked Ham Dinner" are pictured here. Both delicious.
Yourmustachman
Welcome to the historic Mothers cafe, you can feel the history when you walk-in. You have to try the cheese grits , yes, cheese grits are fabulous- the consistency of malt-o-meal. My wife had the fried chicken , was perfect texture, juicy and flavorful. Ooohhhh la, la. I had the breakfast omelette and it was delicious. Mothers is a must; when you go, tell them yourmustachman sent you. 5 mustaches . Bathrooms nice and clean. Coviid protocols in effect.. as if January 25th 2022. Including vaccination passport
Tia D.
Delicious. Staff was very friendly and hilarious. Also very helpful as we were new to the city and provided suggestions on the food and how to navigate public transit. Food was delicious. My sis got the smallest cup of chicken and sausage gumbo and wished she had gotten the largest instead as it was very delicious. I got the cheese grits with debris (pulled pork?) and au jus along with bread pudding covered with brandy sauce and both were delicious!!! Wish I lived in the area but will definitely stop by again if I’m in New Orleans!!!
Luis Daniel
It is the best fried chicken I have ever had. My fiancee's baked ham which they are famous for wasn't as good according to her. I also liked the rice and beans. I would definitely come back and wish there was a place in Houston like this. One thing, either go before or after the lunch hour or you will be stuck in a very long line.
Ryan Lowe
I don’t know how this place is only 4.1 stars. Mothers really exceeded my expectation. I ordered a small famous Ferdi with au jus. The sandwich was MASSIVE and they did not skimp on the meat. It was definitely love at first bite. I didn’t know how I would like a sandwich with mayonnaise mustard cabbage and pickles would taste with au jus but it really came together in holy matrimony. The beef was juicy and moist.
However I didn’t stop there. I was so full but decided to get another dish to make sure this wasn’t a one off.
Ordered the grits with shrimp. I got soup like shrimp that was sort of like gumbo on top of the grits. I thought it wouldn’t be good and even made a face of disappointment because I expected fried shrimp. This meal BLEW MY MIND. It’s easily the best grits in New Orleans. The shrimp also packed so much flavour.
I loved this place. Easily one of my favourites
Michael Lee
Service was good, there was a line but it got short quick. Dining room was huge. Staff was attentive. The soft shell crab po boy was fresh, the jambalaya flavorful.
Koda Devildog
Definitely a must try when in NOLA, dinned here many times while visiting, great breakfast, great po’boys, love the creamy potato salad, green beans, rice & beans is excellent and baked ham
Love the decor. There is parking next to restaurant get a ticket and have it marked by waiter to get reduce fee. There is a quite a bit of wait at times so be patient
Angela Moore
You always know a good place in NOLA when there is a long line of people waiting outside and Mothers doesn't disappoint once you get inside. Homemade biscuits, cheesy grits and lots of options for Cajun meats to top it. Strong chicory coffee is just what you need after a night out in New Orleans. We love Mothers. ❤️
Naimah
Based on reviews I read previously I was excited to try this place. However, I was kind of disappointed. Maybe I didn't order the right thing. The grits were delicious. But the catfish was not good at all. No seasoning. Just very bland
Kaitlin Shanders
There was a line out the door for a reason.. I have to say that this was probably the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. I could not stop raving about this meal. Portions are big, service was great and the line moves fast. If I ever visit again, this will definitely be somewhere I go to again!
Brian F
How in the lords name is this place, at the moment, a 4.1 star restaurant?!?! Those who gives Mothers anything below a 5 star are factually losing it. If you’re in New Orleans RUN at full speed to this place - if there is a line outside, do not be discouraged… just spend some time in line and build up a little more of an appetite to devour Mothers food!
They Call Me Jelly
Service is fast and straight forward. Staff is nice and food is delicious. I wanted to order everything on menu. Definitely recommend their jambalaya 10/10
Cabroncito
It's a great place for breakfast. Make sure you either get here early or be ready to stand in line for a while.
It's a NOLA institution that's worth a trip though. The different types of ham are good. I prefer the black over baked. Biscuits are good and the pancakes are standard fare.
Austin Culter
Definitely a “must eat” for NOLA breakfast. Southern classics offered here and they’re not to be missed. The sausage and cheesy grits were the highlights of my meal there.
Constance Haile
Oh. My Gosh. You have to eat here! But, you better go hungry! Went at 5:30ish on a Sunday. There was virtually no wait. The place was clean. And, I'll tell you what; the people who work here (with the exception of one- there's always one, right?!) were so friendly and kind. They didn't rush you, talked to you with a smile on their faces. It was a refreshing change. And, the food! Ohhh yum. I got the baked ham dinner with cheesy grits and red beans and rice. So good. Those cheesy grits are something else! Hubby got the large debris po'boy. It was super flavorful. Tasted like they cooked the meat all day. And, it was probably 18-20" long. Huge! We will definitely be back. I hear breakfast is to die for!
Anthony Gaskins
The Debris po'boy! FANTASTIC! This place has such a nice vibe. Its like a cafeteria but the food is so delicious. The lemonade was even good. We ate her 2 times during our trip because we wanted to try everything. The Fried oysters, shrimp Po'Boy, and th bread pudding. All phenomenal. Don't Missouri on this place and it is worth waiting in line for.
Carolyn Petersen
Great food! The line moves very fast so don't be afraid to wait. The inside is huge and in a very cool industrial building. I loved the crawfish grits and would 100% go again. Go hungry and eat everything!
Huey-Wen Lin
Ordered Crawfish Étouffée Omelet ($14.00) with regular grits, biscuit and Mother’s raspberry preserves. You have to order on the counter and paid up front. Then take the paid receipt to find a table to sit down; there were plenty of tables and much bigger dinning room space further inside the restaurant. Then someone will pick up the receipt and make/bring the food to you. The portion is really big; lots of Crawfish. Omelet is cook just right, french style. There are 3 bottle of hot sauce to try on; my favioriate is the homemade with strong garlic flavor.
Matthew Parks
It is amazing, this place is an institution. I would highly recommend if you're looking for breakfast this is a great day one spot. Definitely a old school grandmother's making breakfast kind of feel.
Bobbie Dunnington
Blackened Ham is EVERYTHING! Biscuits are so good and love their house jelly! You order at the counter then select table and server takes your receipt and brings your food. It is well worth the wait!
SVG Commercial Cleaning LLC
Everything was better than even I heard! We had a great breakfast! I had the shrimp & grits, rice & beans, and the breakfast Po' Boy with sausage. Listen...the bloody Mary got the party started as well. Spicy! Go eat here...come early as it can get a line fast!
Kevin K
Awesome tasting food served cafeteria style. Portions are generous, prices are great and everything is cooked with LOVE. There’s a lot to pick from on the menu.
I got a sampler platter that had red beans and rice, grits, crawfish etouffee, and jambalaya. Each dish was delicious and flavorful. My friends loved the po boys they had there as well. This is a MUST GO when you’re in town because a lot of other places in the area feel like a tourist traps.
Christina Henry
Everything was delicious especially the Shrimp Creole! The portions are a good size. Wish there was cornbread to go with the red beans. Service was excellent
Chelsea Hilton
Good home cooking for breakfast, ordered cafeteria style and brought to your table. Biscuits, cheese grits & debris, and cheese grits & crawfish étouffe were the best. Coffee was hot and we were served a refill. Get there early to avoid the line!
Brandie Elliott
I was in New Orleans for a work conference and noticed their crazy long line on Sunday. I finally made it in for dinner during the week and was not disappointed. I have Celiac Disease and their menu is clearly marked with what is gluten-free. I opted for catfish, red beans & rice, and potato salad. I should have came back for a second time. The food was delicious. I wasn't too excited about the potato salad...I like a more chunkier potato salad. Would definitely return.
Derrick Smith
The food was good but the staff was great. There were some concerns about a couple of dishes made but our waitress made everything better. Thanks Daranique 👊🏽
Kristie Cramer
One word...delicious. It was everything we hoped it would be, a restaurant with history and fantastic food, plus friendly service. We went with their famous Po Boy sandwiches, holy cow they are huge. Their ham, roast beef, and debris (which is like a roast) are melt in your mouth good. Try their potato salad, it's a smooth texture but packed with flavor. We also enjoyed their red cream ale. It's a must visit while in New Orleans.
James Nance
We ordered the regular shrimp creole and seafood gumbo with a quarter fried chicken white meat with the potatoes salad and red beans n rice. After finishing that when we should have been satisfied, it was so good we also ordered another quarter chicken with cheese grits and turnip greens. It takes 30-45 minutes to get your chicken because they make it to order. We could have even eaten more since it was so amazing. They are big portions; we were just gluttonous lol Best Damm chicken I have had.
Davita Gardner
I give four stars simply because I didn’t get what I ordered. I wanted a fried shrimp poboy with potato salad and cabbage. First of all the cashier repeated my order back to me 3X and said French Fries, I said no cabbage and potato salad every time. The fourth time she said it correctly, but I got fried shrimp with my correct two sides. It was good, shrimp very good, but I wanted to try their poboys. Potato salad looked bland, but still had a good taste and my cabbage was seasoned well, had a huge hunk of ham in my cup. Fried Gulf shrimp platter with my two sides and soft drink came to a little over $25 with taxes. I tipped cash to the deliverer of my food to my table.
Matthew L
Cafeteria style, huge portions, reasonable prices
Fried catfish and oysters are awesome!
Jambalaya is super flavorful
Gumbo was disappointing in comparison
Jambalaya is excellent!
Shrimp creole is excellent!
Bread pudding was tasty.
Poboy was a mess but very tasty
Need to try biscuits and/or breakfast. Breakfast served all day! And they were out of pie :(

One of the best fried chicken I’ve had in my life!! So tender and juicy… Now I know why The South is famous for its fried chicken! Service was very good too!
Reasonable price in the area.
Shanna Bailey
BABBBYYYYY .... the food was amazing and the service made us feel like we were sitting at the kitchen table at Big Momma's house. We got there at 9:30am and it took us only about 10 mins to get through the line, order our food and sit down. I even order the famous Ferdi Po'boy with extra debris on the side. Our server Janet was soo sweet and she took the extra effort to make us feel at home.
Nataki M.
The customer service there is wonderful. We only came for the Bread Pudding. It was warm, the sauce was rich & flavorful and the Bread Pudding was buttery and quite enjoyable.
Cindy Keely
You can't go wrong coming here! The food is fantastic and affordable for breakfast or lunch. Be ready to stand in a line, but don't worry - it moves fast.
Don Sien
Wasn't too hungry so decided to try takeout at Mother's. No wait to place order with cashier, just 5mins to get it.
I tried debris po'boy with au jus and she chose the combo platter of shrimp creole with jambalaya, red beans & rice, potato salad and side of turnip greens. Food was just okay...my debris au jus was very salty. Her combo was more like a sampler with small portions...shrimp creole(main entree) was same portion as everything else! If we ever decide to try Mother's again, it will not be these two items!
Macherique Williams
I’d been hearing about Mother’s for a while! I’m so glad I decided to finally make a stop there during my last trip to New Orleans! Simple, retro cafeteria setup with a charm only New Orleans can offer! I had the jambalaya and the portion/taste were perfect!
Ken M
This place has really good food but is pricey and has a sanitation issue.
I had the half and half seafood, Shrimp and Catfish with fries and red beans and rice. I also had a cup of seafood gumbo. Food was delicious. Servers were friendly.
Cost me $40. They need to clean the seats and tables more thoroughly. I had to go through 4 empty tables before finding a clean one. You have to check the silverware because some are dirty. The ketchup bottle I was given had mold under the cap.
3 stars.

All in all, we enjoyed the experience. There was a line to get in, and you have to have proof of vaccination or a current test within 72 hours or no go. The line moved fairly quickly. We ordered a grilled shrimp po boy ($18), which was excellent and a Famous Ferdi Special ($17). The Famous Ferdi had very little ham, no au jus, and was a total disappointment. Add a small scoop of potato salad ($4.50), a decent Bloody Mary ($10), and a mimosa ($10), and you have yourself a $65 meal. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the server. Just not $65 worth.

Came here for poboys - not sure what I was expecting but the food came quickly and was delicious. I ordered their signature poboy - it came in a lot of jus as promised, but I didn't think thru the fact that the jus would make the bottom bun of sandwich soggy. Still 5 stars for the price

The service here is very fast, everything is already prepared and served on demand so the line moves very fast. If you don’t want to stand in line go on weekdays afternoons. I didn’t really like the service, people basically ignore you they don’t tell you how the system works so I was standing near the door for 10mins just to be polite, after asking one of the staff who seemed busy in his chitchat, he just rudely handed me the menu and ask me to give the order over the counter. When the food came the plates were dirty and the food is below average as compared to other places in New Orleans. I ordered coffee and it seem to be made from spoiled milk, I did feel any special about the restaurant as I heard on the internet. So basically it was a okay experience.
Sam Jacobs
I first ate here in 2008. 14 years later it hasn't changed one bit. And that's a great thing! We ate here twice on our recent family trip to New Orleans. Best breakfast in the city. The crawfish étouffer omelet is something truly special. As are their smoked sausages. Service is quick and to the point, but always friendly. I look forward to eating here any time I'm in town.

Our hotel was across the street so I walked over & grabbed some black ham, egg & cheese biscuits to go & OMG!! This was well worth the wait in line. The food at Mother's was the best we had during the whole week in NOLA.

Went to New Orleans for a concert, had time before so had to get my Roast Beef Po'boy. It had been a few years since being there last. They've changed up the fixin's, shredded cabbage, slight mayo w/creole &yellow Mustard! What? I didn't say anything, went ahead and ordered the Large po'boy, a side a cheesy grits and a Mother's big buttermilk biscuit. The grits were amazing, soooo good, creamy, they were the bomb!! The biscuit, I ate here at home for breakfast , it was so good also. Now, the sandwich, it was ok, IMO, I couldn't get the cabbage or the mustards? Didn't work for me, I needed more aus ju, which I forgot to ask for. We will be back next trip. Very busy place!!

Good for what it is. Down home food, great taste. Cafeteria rules, don't really have wait staff they're more like food delivery people. Get your own coffee. If you come here long enough to have to go and you'll be glad you did. Go there for the food and you won't be dissapointed. Recommend the crawfish etoufee omlette.
Kyle Berry
Great food! The biscuits and blackberry jelly were wonderful! Had Mae's omelette and blueberry muffin. It took a while to get the omelette (the rest of the table was done eating before it arrived), but it was fresh and tasted great.
Cher Couvillion Wilson
Mother's is the greatest name to describe the feel & taste of your visit...just like home!
Shrimp Creole is sooo good. Go ahead & get the large. Best pancakes in town!
Cris Zaragoza
A very popular diner style joint. In the morning, line can get really long going around the block. The food is good and price is just right.
Dave McGowan
Really, really liked etouffee!!! Kids enjoyed pancakes! All good, fast friendly service, priced better than most. Recommended!
Ben Vance
Perfect place for authentic New Orleans / Louisiana food. Amazing atmosphere with a military theme all over the walls. Highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area.
Todd Ebersole
I understand how this place has been here since the 30's. Good porrions and decent prices. Cafeteria style ordering so you stand in line to order and then they bring food to the table. Had the ham and egg biscuit
Don't miss out on the ham.
Amy Schilling
The food here is good but the service is chaotic and it's very likely that not everyone at your table will get their food at the same time but the staff do their absolute best to accommodate you and offer a pleasant experience. I recommend the blackened Ham and the cheese grits.
David Montanez
My first time in New Orleans, stopped in because we saw it on man vs food. It wasn't horrible, just ok. The gumbo was good and the crawfish etouffe was good. The rest was ok. I'd def give it another shot. 😁
Melissa Dentice
Great place to visit if in NOLA. Come a little early to avoid large dinner crowds, but lines move fast since the kitchen seems to pump out the food like it's a fast food joint, but is far from it. Try a Po'boy..I had roast beef, delicious, gumbo too! The "small" po'boys are anything but small. Save room for dessert. Killer bread pudding & I don't even like bread pudding!
T M
Great po boys and pie. Worth visiting this historic New Orleans food institution. The whole place has stayed authentic to its old-school high-turnover diner vibe, so don't expect any frills in the restaurant's ambience and furniture.
Dawn Christon
I had the catfish po boy. My friends had the famous meat po boys. Theirs was good, mine was okay. Fish was Ok but very little slaw to the amount of bread and fried fish so meal felt very heavy. Portions were huge though so great if you are hungry but I couldn’t finish my food.
Brian Mercer
Nice place with decades of history. You cannot tell what decade you are in once you step inside. Cool pictures of famous patrons align the walls making for some neat finds. Po boy and gumbo were good.
Katy Shusta
We love coming to Mother’s when we visit New Orleans. Everyone working there is so kind and welcoming. Even when they ask you to wait outside so the inside dining room doesn’t become too crowded. Which is often so don’t be surprised if you’re asked to wait outside for a little bit. The host gave us all menus so we could review them while we waited. Then we joined the indoor line. I ordered the roast beef po-boy which ones with debris on top 😋 I also ordered a side of fries and got way more than I expected! There’s more seating in the back so don’t freak out if it looks like all the seats are taken!
stevie
Inside was packed so we got our orders to go and ate outside. It was our first time here, the food was good but I definitely had better flavored food. The ham (which is famous) was okay, got a decent amount.
Austin Mathew
If you are in New Orleans and want a one of a kind experience at one of the most well know breakfast diners in town, you have to go to Mother's. They have a massive menu and everything is amazing. We have been in town for 4 days and eaten here twice! I've tried a lot of things down here but Mother's Crawfish Etoufe Omlette takes the cake. This place is a must for breakfast and lunch.
Djenane Fevrier
As a visitor i was up to try anything, and one of the crew recommended the crowfish etouffe or snowfish not sure if im saying it right but boy oh boy. I didn't regret the choice. I had it with a greet with cheese which they call cheesy greet different from the plain greet.
I went back for a second time during my stay so much i loved the etouffe
Valerie Nelson
A MUST go place to visit on any trip to New Orleans! A cafeteria setting with fabulous food, southern charm and the BEST ham on earth. Don't miss this landmark gem. There's usually a line, but well worth the wait. ❤⚜
Seth Blackwell
Food was great. Ain't cheap but is cheaper than most places around the area. Love the way you order and pay first so when ur done u can take off. I'd recommend so highly I plan to go there again before leaving town.
Bri Kirkland
Omg. Absolutely worth it. Crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, cheesy grits, shrimp creole. Every single thing absolutely delicious.
Paul Hamer
Great food and plenty of it. I had the grilled seafood duo with shrimp and catfish with cheese grits and fries. Excellent! Service a bit slow but it stays crowded for extended lunch well after the football games too.
mary turner
Love this place!! They have delicious breakfast and po-boys. The line gets long but moves fast.
Kelly Kittles
Stopped by for lunch and was greayed with a menu and instructions on where to order. Looked the menu over and ordered the Ralph, potatoe salad and a Coke. Found a table for our group and our food was out a few minutes later. I ordered the small and thatwbas the perfect lunch times size, sandwich had great flavor, potatoe salad was good and the atmosphere was even better. Our next visit will be ordering breakfast, the plates i saw coming out with breakfast look amazing. Great place definitely give it a try.
Veronica Edmonds
Delicious Food.. I had breakfast and it's enough for 2 people. The bread pudding was sweet and out of this world with caramel sauce 😋 …
T Holloway
Maaaaaaaaaaaan!!!! LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISTEN!!!!!! If you want something AMAZING to eat....go here. If you want something that feels like a hug on a plate...go here. You want to go someplace that feels comfortable and the folks feel like home....GO HERE!!!!!!!!! I couldn't even finish my breakfast because I was so FULL!!!! Oh and did I mention I had a mimosa?!?! #Winning This place deserves ALL of the positive accolades!!!!
ASH Interactive
The food was outstanding and the staff was very kind and friendly. Local comfort food. I’ll be back next time we are in town!
Dana
Everything was amazing! Worth the wait. Jambalaya (gf) was my favorite. Other gluten free options also available.
Chen Li
Delicious southern food at great value. If you are looking for hole in the wall restaurant with authentic southern food this is it.
If you are looking for elegant restaurant where a girl in cocktail dress and high heels to serve you this is not the restaurant for you.
Ron Filer
Somebody recommended.
A must try. Rich in History.
Read about it.
Food is excellent. People are friendly.
Will be back to try lunch.
Russell Lavender
Nice atmosphere with excellent customer service. Food was really good with homemade biscuits. I couldn’t finish it all!
Daniel Krick
The line is worth the wait. A fun little New Orleans favorite. With all the right dishes. The wall is worth the visit just looking at rhe autographs. It's a who's who. The food is not bad either. So enjoy.
mark ashmore
I walked past this a couple of times escaping the parades, and this place is what soul food and southern home cooking is about, busy but efficient service, tasty filling food, and the ham, is amazing... Visited twice in 5 days while visiting... I'll be back
Chris Brussow
Mad decent, service was good enough and what we expected. Probably wouldn't go back though, too many other places to try and was just barely above average. No refills on our drinks, servers kinda ignored us, mostly.
Was told the shrimp creole was gluten free, it was NOT. I paid for that one...
Fried chicken was very well prepared, looked perfect. (Only took 15 min)
Johnny Wallace
Ate breakfast here on 5/25/2022. Enjoyed the food. Meet some interesting persons while waiting in line. Friendly staff too.
Steven S
This is what the days of old feel like. Brings back so many memories of eating in a small town old diner. Such good food. The BISCUITS! HUGE with a dollop of butter on the side of the plate. Grits eggs and link sausage. Great prices and staff.
Jason Bigler
Nice diner/cafeteria feel as you're waiting in line to order. Busy and fairly loud, but still easy to eat and enjoy a conversation.
Decided to give the Famous Ferdi Special po'boy a try and it was well worth it. The sandwich was full of meat (ham, roast beef, debris), slaw and pickles. The bread soaks up the jus and holds that flavor well. Definitely recommend!
The fried chicken was crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. Seasoned well and served hot. Also recommend!
Tye's Notary
Great dining experience. Our hostess was so super sweet and able to recommend menu items. The Malibu Margaritas were one of my top favorites along with the seafood gumbo. Will definitely recommend dining in again when in New Orleans.
Cee Bee
We are breakfast here on their first day of reopening. Nevertheless, the food was not good as far as flavor goes. My husband was completely unsatisfied and couldn't believe how bad the breakfast was, since we had heard so many great things. He said it was set up buffet style in the kitchen. Well, for me they get an A for effort; we appreciate restaurants at least being open to serve the public, but truth be told we could have just eaten in our hotel lobby down the street and saved our money.
Jen Sieper
Best dish they serve in my opinion is the crawfish ettoufee!! Absolutely delicious! Service here is always fast and very courteous. We've been back several times!
Micki Blevins
Seriously a diamond in the rough! The food was excellent! More pics to come, but the po boys & cheesy grits & fried shrimp were incredible!
Amber Crossland
Oh my DELICIOUS! Everything was fantastic. Red beans and rice, crawfish estouffe, greens, potato salad, pecan pie, bread Pudding, you name it- it's fantastic! The servers were attentive, friendly, and prompt. I have never had this experience at any restaurant anywhere. My stomach was very happy and my taste buds will be pining for the flavors for years to come. Thank you to the city of New Orleans for keeping this establishment running, you've made quite the impression on this girl from Akron, ohio!
Marla Della
With a name like “Mother’s” I was expecting some bomb southern food unfortunately the food was okay. If you visit sit in the front room because the dinning rooms in the back of the restaurant smell. The staff was a mixture of people nice and rude.
Christopher Bean
Wow! Best sandwich that I've EVER had.
If you go, get yourself a Ferdi, you won't regret it.
Service was awesome, food was even better. I highly recommend this restaurant. Out of all the restaurants that I visited in New Orleans during my trip (which was a lot). This one, by far, was the best.
Kerry Thibodeaux
I've eaten there on a couple occasions and have thoroughly satisfied each time. The second time I went, I was planning on getting the fried chicken because my wife had it on a previous trip to New Orleans. However she had gone the day before me to Mother's on this trip and said the fried chicken was not the same. The batter was completely different and the chicken was dry. So, I used this opportunity to try something totally different. I decided on the Famous Ferdi Special which is a poboy style sandwich with roast beef, their amazing ham, and debris with au jus gravy. It was dressed with some sort of slaw with such a unique and addictive flavor that is sort of a combination of horseradish and gourmet mustard. Trust me, the flavor is so much better than I just described it. It also had pickles. The entire combination of ingredients make for a flavor explosion that is unexpected. I cannot believe I have already told so many people about a sandwich! I can't wait to get it again.
Kris Hulsing
Was told to try it out coming to NOLA. It was a good, inexpensive spot and on a Monday morning it was still pretty full. We had the early bird special and the fried ham biscuit.
Suraj Kumar
Loved the crawfish etouffe and red beans and rice the best. Seafood gumbo was also good. Nice home style plates.
B E Padgett
The ferdi the ferdi the ferdi... I don't know how I can stress this enough. The aujus "debri" they put on it is soooo good. My husband got the crab and shrimp Po boy which was also very good. Highly recommend. Easy wait and good food.
Bob Smith
Fantastic food, excellent friendly attentive service. I had the shrimp and oyster po boy on a fresh French roll that was to die for.
Mark Zeilinger
I’ve been coming to New Orleans since the early 70s and always try and make this one of my stops when I’m in town. I love the atmosphere, love the people, shouldn’t miss this place.
Nick Rama (Nick's Local Eats)
Mothers New Orleans for breakfast, Famous Mother's Biscuit and Ham, Breakfast Poboy with Ham, Egg and Cheese, Pancakes and Fried Sausage Links. Good stuff! Great coffee too! My ham was a little dry, but gres flavor.
Jennifer McConville
A new favorite in New Orleans! Yes, there was a line but the food was worth the wait and the staff was great! We recommend the combination platter and sweet potatoe pie!!
Tina Salmieri
Mother's is always a must go to when I go to New Orleans. The debris sandwich and the crawfish etoufee are delicious. If you are ever in town run don't walk to Mother's and don't let the line outside persuade you, it's worth a little wait.
Sarah Surbaugh
This is the 4th time I’ve been here & still the best. The red beans and rice is amazing. The ferdie was 🌟🌟🌟!! Bread pudding delicious!!
Richard Huang
New Orleans staple with the world best baked ham… no frills dining, food is ok and ham is decent
Lennart Wong
The omelette was pretty good although a bit small. The biscuit was huge! The cheesy grits was really good. I like it a lot. Overall, good food. Next time I want to have the ham dinner.
Matt Raybourn
Great food great service! The red beans and rice was on point! Thoroughly enjoyed Mae's File Gumbo with a side of Smoked Sausage and a Spicy bloody Mary. Plenty of seating and great wait staff!
Dave Chester
Loved this place! Ate here a lot! It's busy but you quickly get served and the food is ace,
Lauren Kondracke
Very laid back atmosphere. The food was exactly what you would think of for a home cooked southern meal. Breakfast is served all day. Their ham doesn’t disappoint - the restaurant gets filled with locals and tourists alike. I tried to go back a second time and the line was out the door! The cheesy grits are SO GOOD.
Aubrey Biga
Excellent service, the best biscuits I’ve ever had, and I’m a foodie! Definitely season your grits though, when they say plain they mean it! Will definitely recommend and come back if I’m ever in town again! It lives up to the hype, I love cafeterias like this one.
Craig Reeves
Pricey but I didn’t regret it. Not only was the food delicious (get yourself a biscuit just to try) but the service was great. Looks like a long line but it moves fast and those who waited on us were phenomenal. Five star experience for us.
Starasia Starr
Good food. Nice people. Huge portions for breakfast. That biscuit! Didn’t care for the bread pudding. Get there early!!!!
Bill Hallcroft
Finally had a chance to sit down and have a meal. Food here is great. I had the ham with red beans and rice. Also had potato salad and green beans. Couldn't eat it all. The lines can be very long here especially in the morning. The wait when we went wasn't bad. Worth going to reasonable prices very good food.
Pastor Arthur Felton
The food was not great but okay.
The cashier spilled lemonade all over me on my fist visit.
No offering to clean my clothes.
The next day because of Covid we had a carry out. We waited almost a hour for our food. Finally my wife asked what happened to our order, it was just sitting on the counter.
There were other restaurants we went to. And the service was better.
Owen Murphy
As old school as it gets, everything tasted unbelievably great. The Ferdi Special sandwich is worth the trip to New Orleans alone, the Crawfish Etouffee was indescribably delicious. Our server was sweet and attentive. Give it a try.
Alicia Sharp
Arrived around 4pm on a Wednesday, no line. The bathrooms were very clean and the restaurant was kept at a nice temperature. The greeters were very friendly and offered menu recommendations. One of the staff, named Kemani, was so, so friendly! Helped me get seated, offered me water, even brought me Band Aids for a cut! I really, really appreciated the above-and-beyond customer service and that's what will get me back, so thank you, Kemani!
Highly recommend Mother's Restaurant to anyone visiting New Orleans.
Jeff Spang
Can't come to NOLA w/o eating at Mothers. Found this place 30 years ago. Definately one of the most genuine restaurants in town. Don't miss it!
Samuel mcdaniel
Long line, long wait, so worth it. Great food, fish, grits, seafood, red beans and rice. I tried them all and they were awesome. The atmosphere from the staff was very refreshing they were comical and yet maintained a professional atmosphere. They were extremely busy but I didn't mind the hour and a half wait.
Miss Lo
How I adore Mother's. My dear friend, who is a New Orleans native, Rayna, recommend this restaurant. I ordered the jambalaya, red beans and rice & cabbage. It was a filling plate of food. I did not think that I could eat it all, but I did! Slowly but surely, I savored each bite. Though, the jambalaya was not as spicy as I make it at home...I love me some cayenne a plenty in my jambalaya. Rayna said it's because the food it made mellow for the locals. It makes sense that restaurant is in the middle of the tourist area.
Yes, I would happily come again to eat here. If you're in town, stop by this historic restaurant. You will be happy you did so.
Joshua Colucci
Oh. Oh yes. Yes yes yes. I love this spot. Counter service, great food. I tried the baked ham. Had to. The turnip greens, red beans and rice, and green beans were so good. Add a dash of the chili vinegar and it's absolute perfection. And the sweet potato pie was so good too!
Kevin Maloy
Let me tell you about places that don't suck! This is one of them. Absolutely a staple of NOLA! When you walk in, you get a tremendous sense of the history this place has. Pretty diverse menu of New Orleans traditional favorites and some eclectic things thrown in too. Portions are very generous, and that is not a bad thing ever when you come to a place like Mother's! You'll get your money's worth and eat some of the best food you could ask for.
Jennifer Michel
I had the tour of New Orleans as it is my first time coming out here. It was pretty good overall for an offering for the area. I really enjoyed the different options on the plate and who would've thought that I would enjoy Turnip Greens. The potato salad was fire too. I would only come here on an empty stomach and plan to not eat anything else for the rest of the day because boy is it filling. Definitely worth the money.
Priscilla
Seafood gumbo was good! Definitely give it a try if you’re visiting the area! Be prepared to wait, but it goes by fast. Server was so busy but worked efficiently and was really nice and gave us suggestions. Must try biscuits!
Glenn Primavera
Mothers is now checking for vaccination record. Seafood platter was good but the bread pudding in brandy sauce is the best I have tasted in New Orleans. Sweet potato pie was also good.
Saunders Joyner
Great food, good people...... worth every minute of the wait. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again. I only got 2 hands but Mother's gets 4 thumbs up fa'sho!!! Seafood gumbo, Mae's filé gumbo, Jerry's jambalaya & a kids catfish dinner.....I didn't "need" to have them all at the same time.....I had to & enjoyed every bit of it. **Magnificent**
Randall Chuck
Had to try the ham. It was dry and hard. Our friends had fried catfish. It was GREAT.
You queue up to order, find a place to sit, then a server brings your food. We had a friendly server. I'd go back and have something else from their menu.
Christina Vazquez
So.dang.good. We split the debris sandwich and the cheese étouffée grits 🤤 but I see why this place is an institution.
Julie Markert
Got off the plane and asked our taxi driver to take us for some good comfort breakfast food. He drove us straight to Mother's. Everyone there was so kind. The food is amazing. I could eat the ham and grits all day. And the biscuit ...well it was as large as my hand. And if you're lucky enough to have Miss Janet take care of you, you'll have an amazing start to your day.
Cathy K
Take a menu when you walk in then order at counter inside to the right. Nothing can match a poboy in Nola with gulf shrimp. The small was $16.50 and very filling with a perfect amount of shrimp. Bread was soft and fresh. Nice amount of mayo and shredded cabbage. Main complaint is there were only pickles, no tomato which I think would have a freshness and sweetness. Ordering and checkout was easy. There are benches outside a hotel 1 block away, which was a bit quieter.
Chaos13
Extremely popular with locals as well as tourists. Line is kept moving with a stop by the door so you don't over crowd the front room.
It's New Orleans so you know the food is fantastic! There are 3 different rooms with seating so just keep moving back if you don't see an open table. Earlier is better and weekends are busiest time.
Jennifer Carrero
The roast beef po boy was off the hook! The jambalaya was also on point. We also had the ham platter with turnip greens which was ok but could have used a bit more seasoning. Definitely get a slice of the sweet potato pie and the bread pudding but without the glaze which was a bit sweet.
B.M
Honestly the food is amazing, I'd have taken a prity picture of what I got but honestly it was to good and I couldn't wait
Matthew Braunschweig
Sooo good. One of the best southern breakfasts I've had. Contrary to the advertisements, the baked ham was nothing special, so the 2nd day i got sausage. Get the cheese grits. And the Blackberry Cranberry homemade preserves were incredible!
Lyn F
We stopped in on our last night in New Orleans, and I'm so glad we did. My husband and I both got the combination platter' Was it a ridiculous amount of food? Yes. Was it worth every single bite? Also yes. They had some sort of spicy oil on the table, and I'm still not sure exactly what it was, but it was so good that I used it anyways. Definitely recommend.
Fadra Nally
This place came recommended for the food. If you get there and there’s a line, PUT YOUR NAME ON THE LIST FIRST. If you’re a tourist (like me), you won’t know that. That said, the wait wasn’t bad and once seated our service and food was good. It was good, not great. Not amazing. Just good diner-type food. But the biscuits were amazing. And if you like the pepper vinegar on the table, ask the manager. You can buy bottles to take home!
Jennifer Rinehart
O. M. G. SOOOO good! We split a debris po boy and seafood gumbo topped off with bread pudding for dessert. You won't be disappointed!
Jenny
Biscuit was the highlight of my meal! So good! The chicken was yummy, and I’d recommend trying it if in the area!
William Cook
Three of us visited for dinner. I had the advertised world famous ham dinner platter. Disappointing as I found nothing special in it preparation only one bit had a hint of seasoning. Tender moist but almost too soft from sitting in water. Juices seemed muted. The sides of potato salad soft over cooked mush of eggs, mayonnaise and potato lacked seasonings as we had to add salt and pepper. Where is the paprika? Onion, celery none seemed to be present in this home made mush. I also had cabbage which watered down the whole plate. The green beans was the saving grace in this style of preparation that my mom and grandmother made. Simon had the fried combo of shrimp and oysters and ate heartily. Simon enjoyed his cheesy grits. Shawn had his first ever taste of fried soft shell crab. Large portion of two but he could only eat one as it was too much grease for his stomach. Small corner taste and service was good with refills of tea, lemonade and water. Great pictures for atmosphere but, this place needs lessons in hygienic cleanliness. As table and everything touchable was sticky or hmmm.
Martin Diez
One of my preferred restaurant in New Orleans. We came here for lunch and had few minutes waiting before we get seated (15 minutes). We enjoyed a Seafood extra extra platter and Jambalaya. Both where amazing (we had may other disappointing experience in the French Quarter). The service is perfect and the oakve is really unique. Don't miss this place to eat in New Orleans.
jdlackey2
Best gumbo file’ that I’ve had. I also got a famous ferdi po-boy that was equally as great. I’ll probably go back tonight before I make the trip home tomorrow. Staff was also very friendly and helpful.
Will Hall
Seriously go here! They have some of the best food I have ever had! The service is also amazing! They handle our large group with ease. Their southern food is hands down some of the best in New Orleans. This place is a must visit!
Flaronica Allen
Great breakfast but be prepared to stand in a long line.
The Reviewer
I don't know. Maybe I am one of the few that just doesn't like the food. First, why so much rice? And why is it unseasoned? I mean 3 big huge scoops of rice and so little of the sauce. And the way it is served is weird as well. Just wasn't terribly impressed.
Carole Trace
The food and service is wonderful. We got a bunch of things for our table to share and we were all very pleased. All the food was well seasoned and hot. The service is friendly and quick. 10/10 recommend
Kevin Morris (Borris)
Some of my favorite BBQ anywhere. Always a great stop when in New Orleans. Line moves quick, food is great top to bottom. After a long night out this is a great place to have a spicy bloody mary and a BBQ sandwich. Okra is amazing too.
Ian Tiele
I usually try to get to Mother's (located on Poydras Street) each time I visit New Orleans. The place is an institution, and sometimes you have to wait in line to place your order at the counter. Your food is then brought to whatever table you find. The fare is good Crescent City cuisine with the Po'boys being outstanding. On my last visit I went for breakfast with friends and all four of us enjoyed our meal. Highly recommended if you are in NOLA.
Carlos Babcock
Great little spot for a great assortment of breakfast and lunch items. Menu focuses on strait up local dishes at a good price. I started with a couple of the biscuits along with seafood gumbo. The main dish was the Jambalaya with sides of turnip greens and the cheesy grits. On top of all this I slipped in a side of sausage.
The atmosphere is warm and comfortable. The women who run the place...well they're just like mother. They'll tell you to sit up straight, but it's hard to turn the food away.
Amber Gunter
My husband and I came here because it was in walking distance of our hotel. It was so good. Fish cooked perfectly, sides were turnip greens and red beans and cabbage. I feel that greens are sometimes underseasoned. That was not the case! So flavorful! Huge portions. And although they were a little busy everyone was very pleasant and staff was very friendly. Everything was so great we came back the next day for take out!
Kimberly Miles
Very good chicken & sausage file gumbo. I went to days in a row. Only offers whole milk as a cream option for coffee, so didn't buy any. Early morning breakfast special is an excellent deal.
Danny Randolph
Food and service was great. I had the ham and cheese omelette with cheesey grits. I'm not normally a grit person but I ate every bite of these. You walk in and order and have a seat at a table and your server will come get your receipt and bring you your food when it's ready. From ordering to getting my food was less than 10 minutes. Cost was around $13.
corpus FUSION
This is straight up comfort food that should please all. I could only speak for what I ordered, the ham was soft and moist like a ribeye. The potato salad was no disappointment and try it with some hot sauce it'll take it to that next level. Loved the greens too, it was perfectly season. I could eat a whole bowl of it.
"Mother's" is a must stop for all visitors and locals of New Orleans. Now the only downside side was the wait after ordering. Waiting for your food super very hungry and seeing people get they're food before yours when you'll been seated way fore they ordered is not a fun experience. They need to fit they're serving system. But when the food come, "OMG" all was forgiven and happiness was pouring out.
Food 10/10. Experience 9/10.

Best food i ever had don’t think just go and eat

The shrimp poboy was a 5 star sandwich...delicious! I drove for a whole day from South Texas for a Mother's shrimp poboy and it was absolutely delicious, BUT the service was not good. The young lady who served us was plain rude and it seemed like she had no interest in doing it. She wasn't helpful when we asked about the menu, she didn't give us any silverware and was angry when we had to flag her down to ask for it, and when we asked for lemons and she took so long to return and we were sitting there waiting again for something else before eating. We could see her serving other customers with a smile so I am not sure why she was so rude to us.
Austin Lowery
I've had this place on my list for YEARS since I saw them in Food Network and it absolutely did not disappoint!
The gumbo was delicious and textbook perfect. The shrimp and oysters we tender and fresh and I wish I had a gallon of it with me right now at home as I write this... I would say I loved it the most, but it was our server, I wanna say Toni was her name. She was so friendly, the food came out in less than 5 min and our drinks stayed full. She also gave us some sights to see. Loved her.

Mother's is such a cool spot to visit. I keep trying to get Shrimp and grits but keep getting shrimp creole and grits.
Anyway...
This is a cafeteria type restaurant, they give you a menu and you are in line to get to the register, the lines allows you to walk pass some of the food available like a cafeteria, you pay for what you want and a server brings your order to you.
My only issue with my recent visit was a male cashier insisted that I was asking for a ouster po boy. When another person took over he told her I wanted an oyster po boy. It was odd because I had the menu in my hand pointing to shrimp and grits, and red beans and rice. Fortunately the female cashier corrected the problem and I received what I wanted. I later noticed the male cashier had a hearing aid.
My wife and I love Mother's, the overall visit is a New Orleans experience itself.
Also the food is GOOD!!
John Keilman
Funky and efficient counter service, no frills restaurant. Different wandering servers brought our food, refilled our drinks and checked that we were OK. I'd eat here again, food was good. I loved the cheesy grits.
Mike Butcher
Had to try them. Got a table quick. Got lucky, this place is usually busy. Fried chicken was amazing. Red beans and rice was the same. Kind of a cafeteria setup, but they bring your food to you
Carly Hagins
Maybe a funny thing to say, but this place definitely has good energy. It's low key and friendly, and like another reviewer mentioned, the portions are super hearty. I wish I would have split my 'small' po' boy. The food was not a stand-out, but I get the impression that the move would be to order a platter with ham and a side or two.
Doesn't feel like a must-go, but I also wouldn't avoid it. Worth stopping in if you are closeby.
Jerrod Perry
If you're looking for good, old school diner food with Southern Hospitality this is a great spot. Don't let the line at the door scare you away, they let in folks in groups to order in a more organized manner. Not a place to order healthy! Get the biscuits, the Cochon, grits, and debris po boy! Would've loved to try the bread pudding, but there's always next time!
Silly Gir.
The line was extremely long, but moved fast. The food was just okay. The red beans and rice were not seasoned as expected. I will skip this spot next time.
I ordered the Seafood Half & Half.
Louise Jones
I love this place. The food is fabulous and everyone is so friendly. Great place!
Bei Wu
Food is very tasty. We really wanted to try fried chicken. However we were told we had to wait for about 45 minutes. We ended up not ordering it. That will give us a reason to go back ☺️.
Mark Ventura
We went here after right after the Halloween parade and it was crazy busy! Despite how busy it was, the line moved pretty quickly and we didn't wait too long. The food was great and the atmosphere was also great. A lot of history at that location and just a great local spot.
Nat Bell O knee
Huge portions for being a small but really good soft shell crab and effouffe
Sandra Wiles
If I was rating solely on my plate (the blackened ham with cabbage & potato salad (more like a mashed potato salad, creamy but with some texture, very good, I'd definitely eat more of that!) The ham was VERY dry which was disappointing) I would give it 3⭐ but my daughter's fried fish & shrimp plate was exceptional! There was enough fish & golden fried shrimp for 2 people, easily...& it was hot, fresh, crispy yet tender & delicious. The other thing they did well was the special jambalaya (I can't recall the name but there's only 2, original & a special 1.) It was seasoned well with just a little spice (it could use more spice for my taste but it's good for low spice-tolerance tastebuds.) My husband's sandwich was like a Cuban with coleslaw was well made, tasty and came with an au jus dipping sauce with a lot of meat in it. He enjoyed it. Our server was super sweet, friendly & helpful. Overall I would recommend Mother's for a fun casual lunch spot. PS. The history on the walls is excellent!
Dali La
Great food and the head manager, she is awesome! She is a great person; just her hospital personality, she looks out for the customers if her staff messes up your order she's got your back! Definitely would go back there again!
Ronnie Fairley
This place is simply over priced and overrated. I would not return for mediocre Po-Boys when there are so many friendlier restaurant s with better tasting food locations in New Orleans. This is strictly for tourist coming from the near by hotels where they advertise. I paid 3 dollars for a generic bottle of water. The same price I would pay at a fair or venue with entertainment.
Emmanuel Lawrence
Mother's Restaurant was what i would consider a small diner with great food! The service was friendly and what you would expect of southern diner. I had the shrimp po'boy and my companion had breakfast. The food came out quick and hot. The biscuit were outstanding!
James Burnette
Went there for mardi gras. Fantastic food at a fast pace, great service. Super friendly servers. Hope you get Mark since he's hearing impaired he puts a lot of effort into making your needs attended to with a great smile and wonderful demeanor. Only downfall is the wait in line but trust when I say the wait is worth it.
Russell West
Great food and good atmosphere, nice and efficient staff. Kuran (Quran?) was my waiter, give that man a raise!
Ólafur Haukur Flygenring
Nice place, and the staff was friendly and helpful.
The Po boy I got was a little too soggy for my taste, and I ended up having to eat it with cutlery because it disintegrated in my hands.
The Gumbo I got was delicious 😋
Kenny Beville
Awesome place. Long line to get in but it moved pretty fast! Service was excellent and promptly delivered our food! The "Famous Ferdi Special" and "Mae's Filet Gumbo" is worth coming back for when in NOLA next time!
MyFit FootSnug
Kind of a tourist trap but the food is actually really good if not a little bland. Might need to add some salt and hot sauce but that’s great just let’s it work for everyone, that’s what cafeteria style should do. Nice space and staff too. The food is more homestyle than most places in nola.
Janie McInnis
hands down one the favorites during our visit. Not the most appealing restaurant but the food makes up for it. The greens and sweet potato pie is a must try. Goes to show never judge a book by its cover.
Linda Bromberg
It was breakfast. Coffee was delicious. The eggs were just like I like them. Ham was dry and thick. Couldn't eat it. Biscuit was under cooked and stuck to my teeth. It came 20 minutes before my entree and was cold so the butter didn't melt. The grits were cold and butter didn't melt. And my friends were half done before my 2 eggs grits and ham was served. They ordered omlets????
Darryl Johnson
You want some local Cajun food. This is the place. Grits and the gumbo were amazing. They don't always tell you but You stand in line and order then after you order your sit and find a table that is open
Victor Torres
Saw this place in a YouTube video that recommended the po boys and I see why!! It was absolutely delicious a true staple if new Orleans
Faybra Jabulani
Really good food, quick service, reasonable price for a the portions. The Ham, grits, and sweet potato pie are scrumptious. I would definitely eat here again.
darryl english
After debating about going to mother’s for dinner with my wife. I can truly say that the dining experience was good but what made it great was the friendly and attentive service from Freddie Scott as well as the manager Chad Bearden.Keep up the good guys. Looking forward to dining with them again before we head back home to Chicago!!
Michael Carmody
I ate too much, but that was my own fault! Po boys are huge, plan to share with a friend...beans and rice, gumbo are a must try as well. Bloody Mary's are spicy!! Get that water to go with your meal if you go that route.
Unequivocally Me
It wasn't all that. I've cooked tastier meals in my own kitchen and I don't even like to cook 😒 Full disclosure- I'm a native Louisianan so maybe that makes a difference🤷🏾♀️ Check your order BEFORE you leave if ordering to go also. They make you wait outside for to go orders and hand off your food there but heaven forbid you trust that you have everything you ordered because if you leave without checking they won't honor their mistake of leaving out a whole item of food. Maybe they really needed the extra $15 that I paid for the missing item
Regan Brunetti
Once you go up and order you'll get a receipt and then you can go sit down at any table. Somebody will come around and get your receipt and then bring you your food. It's a little confusing I kind of loitered in the front for a long time not knowing what to do. But the food is really great and the space is really interesting you can go pretty far back in there it's much bigger than it looks
Evelyn Hagerman
My first visit in July of '22 was fantastic. My return visit in November of '23 was truly disappointing. Quality and quantity of the catfish salad dish was not up to par. Less food, more money. Will not be returning.
Ikey T
I'll start by saying that My date LOVED this place. I however thought it was ok. I had the shrimp creole with turnip greens and cabbage and my plate was just way too soggy. They didn't drain any of the water so my rice was under water from all 3 things on my plate the veggies had no flavor at all. The shrimp creole had decent flavor but again too much water in the sauce. The Ham was delicious the potato salad was delicious and the fries were crunchy. I'd be ok with not eating here again but I think my date would disagree.
Dylan Rawline
Everything was wonderful as usual. I actually went there twice this trip, 8 hours apart. For dinner, I had a double order of Dark Fried Chicken. It came with 4 sides. Double Red Beans, Cabbage and Potato Salad. For Breakfast I had the Early Bird Special. I like the new table service.
Mandie Trahan
So I've been told about this place from so many people. That this place has the best poyboys, that this place is amazing. We went. We were not impressed. My food was bland. It was huge an very expensive. My husband's food was okay. I got a Famous Ferdi special which is a poyboy. It was not good. It was okay. The Small was huge. Can definitely split it between two people or more. This poyboy has ham, roast beef, and original debris with au jus. So I was expecting it to be great. It was not. My husband got the shrimp creole dinner. Everything was bland. My kids shared the pancakes. Which was the best thing we ordered. I also ordered a brownie, it was okay. The fresh lemonade was wonderful. Also the staff that delivered and kept the refills coming was great.
Daniel Corliss
Be careful because they will upcharge you quite a bit without warning. The special was $8, and the actual ticket was $20. Went with the adds, though, and the food was delicious. Love the debris.
Lisa Zinkie
Wow. Looks humble on the outside and inside. I got the Famous Ferdi special (po boy with ham, roast beef, and debris) and it was fabulous. The flavors were spot on - the condiment mix that comes standard were a perfect accent to the savory meat flavors. The red beans and rice were full of delicious sausage. Very tasty. The bread pudding doesn’t look like much but 🤌 - the buttery/bourbon finish was just lovely. Definitely want to hit this place up again! Staff were great - our waiter guy was the sweetest. Oh! They have Barqs red cream soda on tap! Highly recommend.
jsin roberts
I wasn't impressed from the over hype from travel shows and TV shows. Maybe I let them build it up to much for myself, at best as a tourist I'd say Bland across the board. For the world's famous ham... Well no idea what they meant there. Dried thick ham.. Service was good, food definitely over sold. 20 dollars 2 eggs, ham, grits, chicory coffee . I'd route around next time... And wait till I got out of DT.
O “Mr. Review You” Cally
Biscuits and shrimp po'boy was amazing the gumbo was so so and my kids eggs were cold but the server was very good and nice and said we could get them changed but I've taught kids never send food back
R B
Gets better and better over the years. The expanded dining rooms are fantastic. Drink service from the servers, quick ordering. Excellent poboys. Highly recommended.
Julie Watts
Mother's is always delicious! AND they serve their whole menu all day long!!
Chris Seguin
Great food being a first-timer at mother's, I'll share, order at the counter a server will find your receipt tag your receipt and bring in your food. If you just want a glass of water that's to the left of the cash registers. Great experience.
Susan Atkinson
Oh yummy! Our dishes were delicious. Potato salad is a lot like I make it, smooth. Delicious crawfish etouffe . Hubby loved the ham. Staff is friendly and fun.
Mrz. B1ggz
We love eating at Mother's!! You always get your money's worth, and the food is delicious. We got poboys this time around, I had the Baked Ham & swiss, and my hubby had the Famus Ferdi Special. If you've never had their poboys, you're missing out. The bread is fresh made in New Orleans, and the meats are laid on thick. Talk about fresh and so yummy!! We added a side of fries that we shared, thankfully because the plate was loaded. Enjoy!!
Kathy Fox
Great history and a place to visit for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Passed down and still in the family, Mother’s first opened 1938 and survived Hurricane Katrina with minimal damage. If you are going during peak hours expect to wait, but the line moves fast and ordering is efficient. You order, pay, find a table, and they bring you your food. The food was served quickly, right temperature, and the service was friendly.
Breakfast is served all day so I ordered the waffle with peaches and my husband had the Ralph sandwich. The bloody Mary’s had a kick and we’re good! We both enjoyed our selections. I also had a side of ham, but it I would say it was a bit on the dry side.
Enjoy some good comfort food at Mother’s and make sure to read the history in the back of the menu. There is definitely something on the menu for everyone so give it a try.
Michael Woody
Just had an early dinner there after a really long day. Gary? Gerry? was our waiter. He did a great job, never had to ask for anything and he was very courteous. Please thank him again for us.
Seafood Platter is piled high with fish, oysters and shrimp. I chose turnip greens and red beans and rice as side. The greens were super flavorful, lots of wonderful ham. Their hot vinegar sauce was perfect on them. Red beans and rice had a lot of sausage and ham and were some of the best I have eaten. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great.
Having great service with a great meal is the best feeling when dining out. Not a single complaint.
Will definitely come back and recommend to friends or whoever I see on the street. 😊
Forgive the lack of photos, my phone just quit taking pictures and I only have one with the vinegar hot sauce.
**Update
Went for late lunch here. Cecille waited on us. She is a character, full of jokes and just super awesome to be around. Makes your visit so much more enjoyable. ❤️
Added a few pictures of a signature sandwich. This is the "Ferdi" variation called the Ralph, which adds cheese of your choice.
This is the 'regular' size and it's enough for 2. That debris is so good. Mother's has been one of my favorite places to go this trip.
Nariyah Williams
MOTHERS was such a great experience! Their food is delicious and the portions are great sized and everything is made to order. I had the fried chicken. Just a heads up it is a 30-45 minute wait because they make the orders fresh to order, but it is worth the wait! They make home made preserve jelly for their humungous and delicious biscuits. Their sweet bread pudding and rum sauce is delicious!!!! The chicken was hot and fresh and the red beans and rice on point. And they have this beautiful and nice waitress named Renee that makes you feel at home and part of the NOLA family and culture. She is so kind and a great waitress! She makes sure you have everything you need as well as notifies you of the status of your order. She is such a sweetheart! I hope everyone has a great experience like we did and we will be going back everytime we visit! 😊🖤

Shrimp etouffe, cheese grits, cabbage was ok but seemed a little bland for New Orleans.
We als had the ham dinner which we heard was awesome but just seemed a little above average.
Staff was nice and food came out in a timely manner.
Johnny B Williams
Try the Ferdi. Really good, and the "small" is a lot of food. Don't let the long lines put you off. They move fast. The gumbo is bland so order that elsewhere.
Maria Duignan
Large restaurant, friendly staff, quick service and great black coffee! This restaurant is a New Orleans institution know for its baked ham.... delicious. Most entries were basic and good. The biscuits and jam were out of this world!!
Judy Sun
A nice neighborhood restaurant. The food is good and typical to the area.
The biscuits are good, fresh and taste homemade. My experience here was a good one. I recommend this place.
Aggy Rebel
Probably the best breakfast I have had all year. Everything was cooked perfectly. Seasoned just right. Portions were big enough that even though I wanted more I had no room to put it. Waitress Cecille was awesome. Very attentive. Completely satisfied!
Ebony Renee
Heard about this place from our Lyft driver, about how it's a local and Nationwide favorite so we definitely had to try...plus it was a 2 minute walk from the hotel. Ms. Pat was our server and Momma Pat was amazing! She provided AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE! I'm not a breakfast person so I had fried chicken at 9:30am...judge ya momma lol. My mom and sis had actual breakfast meals and enjoyed it. My sis plans to return to try the famous sandwich. It was the best food, but decent.
Maria Maria
Went to breakfast here today and was amazed at every turn! I literally told my mom, “I died and woke up in food heaven.”
As it was breakfast, I ended up going with the cheese grits and a biscuit with jelly and butter. My husband wasn’t awake yet so I got him a smoked sausage link and he couldn’t stop singing it’s praises.
The men and women who work at Mother’s though are what I found to really be the “secret” to their success - so kind and genuinely happy to be there!
I was so pleased to see they really take the Covid-19 recommendations seriously, from proper social distancing between tables and obtaining contact info when checking at the host stand for tracing purposes.
Justine Chang
Mother's tastes like how it sounds. It's real comfort food for the soul. Absolutely delicious. The Fried chicken special with dirty rice and green beans was fantastic. The jambalaya excellent! The ham platter with turnip greens, green beans and red beans and rice yummmm. Highly recommend coming here. We are going again in the same day to get the shrimp&oyster poboy. The line is worth the wait guys. One person can grab a seat and reserve while the other orders. That's what we did! Saves you the trouble of finding a seat after you order. Amazing how they can find you and bring the food out to you! Keep your receipt on the table. They will find you and they will serve you. =)
Dmitry Trishkin
I liked the atmosphere at that place . It definitely have a history and the vibe of simple New Orlean dining . Their special baked ham was indeed delicious. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Plus they serve alcohol as well , which is cool . There are tons of photos on the wall from famous celebrities and local artists . And the price is super convenient. 5 stars for whole experience
Argus Brown
I go here every time I am in the area. The breakfasts are still reasonably priced and classic southern fare (Except for the Sausage which is more NOLO style.) The PoBos are also excellent. Get their signature PoBos. You will not be disappointed.
Erik Hart
Waited over 30 mins for a sandwich that some how went somewhere else. Nothing like watching others be served that came in well after me. They did finally get my sandwich and it was excellent.
J W
Crawfish etouffee is the best!! Seafood gumbo is average. Pecan pie is great. Bread pudding is ok. Jambalaya is great! Definitely worth a try. Thanks to the rain, didn’t wait at all.
Anna Bashover
Maybe it was a bad night since it was Halloween weekend but I did not enjoy my debris po boy dipped in au jus, maybe it was my fault for ordering that which was something new, it wasn't seasoned well as well. I had some of someone else's etoufee which was delicious and everyone else liked their meals.
Nicholas Bragg
Never a bad meal. A must stop for a taste of history and a taste of New Orleans.
Marco Marone
Great classic New Orleans breakfast place. The service is quick and efficient. You'll grab the menu and order right away as you enter. The waitress will bring you your food a few minutes later.
NOTE: this place does not serve bacon!
Scher Hill
The service was top notch and the grilled Shrimp salad was fabulous but I was not impressed with the gumbo at all... mine was basically thin soup with a little rice floating, one small chunk of meat but not much else.
Sandie Stalzer
Must stop if you want the NOLA food experience. The lines are always long but they get you in and seated, served quick! It's a piece of history of New Orleans.
Enoch C
A great place for authentic New Orleans cuisine! Heads up the regular size is really small (so the prices are actually a little overpriced). A large would be more suited for the average male. The jambalaya and the seafood gumbo were delicious nonetheless. The wait times (after ordering) were also a little unreasonable. Overall, a good experience.
Nik Kontrimas
Mothers is a New Orleans institution that serves good food in a no frills spot. Many world leaders have eaten here and there is often a line out the door. The staff are friendly and get things done quickly.
Definitely has become one of my go to spots in NOLA for good southern comfort
Ron Anthony
Popular restaurant with great food, but best to go when they isn't something happening in the city, the tourist flock there and the lines get INSANE fast. But if you catch it when the city is quite and the line isn't long the food is nice.
Keith Kelley
Followed the suggestions of some local freinds to go here. All I can say is this is a must visit establishment! The Debris Sándwich, Gulf Shrimp, Green Beans and Tomato. And lets talk about the Potatoe Salad with the consistancy of mashed potatoes.. This side can be a main course item all by its self! When we walked in we were greeted and shown the ordering process. We found a open table and the nicest waitress came over to take care of us. I wish I could remember her name. (I'm terrible at this). If you are in New Orleans and don't try this restaurant you are completely missing an experience.
Dharshini M
This place has great food. It was a little bit of a wait but not too bad. Food and service was good. Ham was truly amazing. Biscuits are huge but good. Must try if you're in NOLA.
Peter Eidegren
Now this is how proper Cajun and Gumbo should taste like.
This is the place to eat at when you are in New Orleans. It has a lot of charm with pictures all over the walls of famous people visiting the restaurant.
You have to wait in line to make your order then the food will be served at you table.
The food had a good balanced seasoning and tasted really good.
I highly recommend this place!
renegadegeeK
Classic southern comfort food dive. The au jus served on the meats was wonderful, and the bread so so. The stewed green beans were fab and the turnip greens okay. I wish they had a simple fried oyster basket as opposed to the latter as the oysters were tasty but not convenient to order. I dug the atmosphere but still felt it was over priced for a lunch meal...but if u exclude that I’m glad we made it by. Get there early for lunch to avoid the line.
jonathan swisher
Food was awesome! Smoked sausage and ham was my favorite. We also had the shrimp etouffe and shrimp creole. The biscuits are from scratch too! Spicy bloody mary was a winner too!
John Chen
Stopped by here on a Friday night for dinner and was greeted by a really nice lady who explained the ordering process to me. You grab a menu right when you enter and head over to the ordering line when you know what you want. I got myself the baked ham with potato salad, grits, and green beans and tomatoes. When you're done ordering, you can sit down at any table and the waitresses will come to you and find you via your receipt and give you your food.
The food was great, the ham was cooked well and was very moist and the side dishes complemented the flavor of the ham really well. The service was fast and really nice. The decor was really homey and comfortable. Would definitely come again.
Fajr AlNurridin
Everything we ate was Absolutely delicious! The service was great! Although it's a cafeteria style restaurant, the staff continued to check on us at our table and being everything we requested with a smile and that New Orleans "baby"...Here you go baby, Is everything ok baby, You're welcomed baby! We loved it and will definitely be back!
donald tinsley
We got there around 9:30am. We were told we'd have a 25 minute wait and it was probably every minute of that. When we were called in we were sat and the hostess was very sweet and quick to smile. The server came and got our drinks and order and left us a biscuit with butter and jam. This biscuit alone would be reason enough to eat here. Our food came quickly after we ordered and looked amazing. It was an omelet with crawfish etouffee in it and on it. There are not words sufficient enough to describe how delicious it was. It came with grits, so what I did was eat all the egg and then mix the grits with some of the etouffee. Incredible. The server was quick and on her game, the kitchen was DEFINITELY on their game and the place has a classic feel of the past.
Mara Ellis
It's not what you expect you order then find a table food is brought out by several different ppl. It could use some touch up just throw tables in rooms like a cafeteria. Servers are clearly not worried about a tip or not
Shanelle S
Popular NOLA restaurant that has all the classic Cajun food. Be prepared for a wait, because there’s a lot of lines involved. Came here with 3 other people on a Tuesday around 1:30pm. Waited for about 13 min of outside before the guard let us wait inside. We waited for about 16 minutes before we got up to the cashier to order. They recommend checking your receipt before leaving to make sure your order is correct. They do take credit cards. The line never did die down, and it seemed like people just kept coming. You order first before grabbing a seat.
The restaurant is a lot more spacious than I thought - there are a lot of tables that could fit up to 12 people as well as smaller 4 person ones. There are bathrooms available with 3 stalls. Once you’re seated, a head waiter takes your receipt and directs your orders to your table. It took about 40 min for food to come out, but that’s because we got the fried chicken, which is made to order. The fried chicken was a tad too salty but I liked the crispiness of the skin. The plate of fries we got were huge and good for four people. They’re thin cut and reminded me of crispier In-n-Out fries. The regular size famous ferdi special po’boy was quite heavy and could easily feed 2 people alone. I liked how the au jus soaked into the bread so it was slightly soggy but very juicy. For first-timers I would recommend the combination platter which came with a sampling of different New Orleans classics. The jambalaya we got was very filling, and the the shrimp creole was equally good. The red beans and rice were a bit underwhelming but it’s also a side, so nbd. Overall, there’s hearty servings of good Cajun food.
Juan Garcia
All the food was delicious 😋 fast and good customer service.
kisha everson
The fish and shrimp were fried to perfection. The green beens were very tasty. The cabbage was steamed and very tender. I added my own seasoning to the cabbage. The servings were very large. I had enough for lunch and dinner. The line was out the door. The waiters were very attentive and accomodating. Thank you for a great experience. 💕
Sincerely,
A Tourist
Tamara Thomson
Food is authentic, old school, Louisianna southern cooking. The service is simple cafeteria style and the atmosphere shows of a place that has worked hard to earn it's respect and following!
Jerrod Bonacci
Had the seafood gumbo which was excellent, the shrimp po boy not bad, but bread seemed dry. Pecan pie is fire! Great and friendly service. Can be long wait times.
Christopher Regets
Really decent value.. Po boy was good. Was surprised the Au jus was just added to the plate, which made the bread soggy. It was still tasty tho. The bread pudding was really good as well.
Lorena Bergeron
Bit crowded. Service is great and accommodating, but can be slow. The food is okay. I wanted more of those flavors I remember from a New Orleans poboy
Maurice Cohen
Had a sandwhich. Meats tasted great. Bread could be much better.
Morgan Dixon (The L & T MD)
Had to see what the hype was all about and enjoyed the experience. Extra friendly staff and heaping portions make this Canal Street gem a must visit in NOLA. The catfish was seasoned and fried to perfection. The Shrimp Etouffee was by far my favorite and to think I almost didn't order it. Surely recommend!
Andy Budhan
Was told to try the food here, since it was two blocks away from our hotel. Did not regret it ine bit. The breakfast and Po-boys were tasty. Not to mention the portions were huge!! Couldn't complete our meals..
Justin Chavers
Decided to eat local and help support a local diner than a corporation eatery. The atmosphere is amazing. Very clean and amazing decor. Loved looking at all the famous military officers and politicians. The staff was very laid back and friendly. He answered all of our food related questions.
Decided to go with the combination dinner plate with crawfish,j home made jambalaya, red beans and rice, potato salad and green beans. Washed it all down with a local beer and I couldn't complain. The food was worth every penny. Will eat here again next trip hopefully.
Nathan Hawkes
If you are staying in this area anywhere near the French quarter, this is where you want to go eat for breakfast. Hands-down we made a good choice in selecting this restaurant to eat. You get the touch of home feel with a heavy home decor interior, smiling staff as you walk in the door, and good chatter from the wait staff. The buttermilk biscuits are to die for. So good. Make sure you try this place out. You’ll be glad you did.
Nalina Dessers
Although we didn't have the opportunity to try their po'boys and other daytime specialties - as we only had time for breakfast - we did get to try their signature Black Ham, and it was good!
Breakfast portions were huge and hearty, the place was already quite busy during breakfast, but luckily not so much of a queue.
Lovely and casual atmosphere, friendly staff makes the whole experience very pleasant and all the more memorable. Hopefully we'll be able to visit again for all the other popular local dishes! We've heard so many wonderful things about the jambalaya, gumbo, and bread pudding!
Lindy Zhang
authentic New Orleans specials. the po’boys are absolutely delicious!! visited and eat here twice because it was unbelievably good - i normally don’t like overrated famous places, but Mother’s was so good and such a down-to-earth place!
the original po’boys was our absolute favorite. we also had the shrimp po’boys that was great - though not as flavorful except when i put hot sauce on it. get the regular size and share with a friend!
Katie Renae
Great homemade food, the Gumbo and Greens where off the chain. A must if you are in New Orleans! We also had Breakfast togo you won’t be disappointed! Prices are great 😊 …

Amazing food, inviting atmosphere, best fried oysters that I've ever eaten. Combination plate, shrimp creole, cheese grits, red beans and rice, fried oysters, cabbage, kids grilled chicken (idk which seasoning used with the grilled chicken, but omg, it was amazing) lemonade 🔥🔥🔥🔥. I love everything about this place, I'd definitely love to visit again.
Diane Lehua Kanae
Home cooked food and a place for locals. Reasonable prices. Lots of takeout orders and daily specials. Cheese grits, biscuits, beans, fried catfish, shrimp etc.
Kelley Yonezaki
Loved my soft shell crab po boy. Great service too
Sherman C
It doesn't look fancy but it tastes good. That's all it matters! The grilled seafood platter was so delicious . Fresh and freshly grilled shrimps, oysters and catfish with flavorful seasoning. So are the jambalaya and crawfish entourfee. The ham was thick and not too salty like most others. Service was a bit slow and rude but I'd still give it five stars for the food at this price. After all, they don't accept tips and it's mostly self service.
Jonathan Dearing
Classic New Orleans Poboy, very tasty, great service and good value.
Lohendy Tiburcio
Very good jambalaya we loved
Huw Bryant
Tasty food and just a great dining experience. The Po Boys are a must have! We went for the beef po boy and shrimp po boy and they did not disappoint. So much flavour - we highly recommend a trip to Mother's!!
Brandon Gremillion
Excellent food in a good location! Stopped in for dinner when I was in town for business and left pleasantly stuft! I had the shrimp and osyter poboy along with a cup of chicken & sausage gumbo then ended with some bread pudding. All were delicious and I'd love to eat there again! Highly recommend Mother's Restaurant when in the French Quarter!
Alejandro Ruybal
Very nice bartenders, servers and cashier. Cheap good food, in a cheap and exotic place to eat tasty good food fast and leave. Not for the first date.
Evette Bing
It was my first time in Mother's Restaurant and We were greeted and the food and service was great, actually the food was very fresh we actually went back the next day.
Debra M
Our friend recommended we come here on our visit to New Orleans. So glad we didn’t let the line outside scare us away. It moved very fast. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table. Nothing fancy, just down home cooking that is fantastic! We ordered,
Ham & Swiss cheese omelette with cheese grits - lots of ham, delicious.
Crawfish etouffee with cheese grits - So flavorful, DELICIOUS!
Fresh baked biscuits with jam - good
Would definitely go back.
Shushan Nazaretyan
Either I was really hungry or their sandwich was fantastic!!!
Julian Chanaga
Food was all good, Ferdis special was so amazing as always, shrimp was good fries needed seasoning but everything tasted fresh. Only thing that was not good was the lemonade. Tasted horrible not the recipe just the water that was mixed with it. service was really good and attentive food also got out real fast.
Live Life
Place serves good food, everything was excellent
Keith Peterson
Price was right, atmosphere was fun and the food was amazing....our server Janet was a blast and her favorites words are "make a gap" and "baby". Highly recommend the seafood gumbo. A+ service and food.... a must visit while in NOLA.
Mark Boeckel
I really wanted to love this place, especially after so many people told us how great it is. We went on a Monday morning and it wasn't busy at all. The one thing I was looking forward to was the ham, because so many people told me how great it was. Both my wife and I got ham and it tasted like it had been under a heat lamp for a day or two. It was dry, cold, and stringy. The biscuits were great and the other food was ok. The waitress was wonderful. She was super sweet and was willing to answer any questions we had about the place. I'd give the waitress 5 stars if I could. If I'm in NOLA again, I'll probably give this place another try as I'm hoping we just had an anomalous experience.
Sammy Chung
We had the jambalaya and shrimp grits. They were ridiculously delicious! Surprisingly the grits was soupy but had a flavorful base.
AJ Girardot
This was a great find. In all the research on places to eat this never came up and that's a shame! I had red beans and rice and then a bowl jambalaya. I will be back to try more of their awesome food.
Jeremy Walton
Melt in your mouth fried catfish! Wonderful red beans and rice as well as potato salad. It's a must if you are in New Orleans.
Connie L
Our waitress was helpful as this was our first time visit I had a few questions. We ended up trying the famous ham with beans and rice, turnip greens and fries. The ham was tender and very tasty. Turnip greens very good. Fries were nothing special.
Jonathan Snell (ForWhyWhatSayYouSir)
Kind of a weird way to order. You look at a menu then order then get seated. First restaurant experience in NOLA. Food wasn't exactly what I expected but it was good. Slim pickings for someone who doesn't eat spicey food.
Where's Karl
Stopped in and had a John G. Food was very good. Server was Marie she took very good care of me. The atmosphere was very homey .
Chuck Shubert
First time was excellent. My wife had the red beans n rice and ham. I Went with the catfish/shrimp plate. I highly recommend checking this place out. 👍👍 …

Went here for breakfast as I have never been and there was a lot of hype. It was good but nothing spectacular. It think there are a lot of amazing restaurants in New Orleans and even though this is a staple with solid food, I wouldn't say it was a must go.
I had a shrimp omelette and it was ok. Grits were great! Sausage was ok. Biscuit was pretty good and the jelly is nice.
Mia Driskill
This restaurant is a MUST if you are in New Orleans. This was my first experience at Mother’s and it was delicious. This restaurant is all about the food. When you come in you order first and then sit down. Know what you are going to order before you get in line. The restaurant does get packed so be prepared. Food is authentic and you will not be disappointed. Don’t expect table service and you will leave happy!
Greg Woyton
Well pleased with food and friendly staff . It's a unique dinning experience by placing and paying for your order first with the cashier then finding an open table to sit and wait for you food . No tipping is necessary and signs are posted stating so . The breakfast special for $9.75 includes 2 eggs anyway, grits , one meat choice and toast or biscuit . For an additional .50 you have the option of adding cheese to your grits. We chose their world famous ham for our meat choice and were nicely rewarded with ample pieces of succulent appetizing slices of ham and got the optional cheese for the grits . Expect long lines as this restaurant is a local favorite . Well worth the wait .
carol mcdonald
Omg! The food was so good, and plenty of it!! Everyone that worked there, was kind, helpful polite, and carried on a conversation! Some of the most beautiful girls I've seen here in New Orleans!
Madelyn Haussner
Awesome hood home cooked food. Nothing fancy here, but the food is awesome, along with an awesome server! 👌🏻 very attentive to our needs. Hurry, go, get there, chill, eat 😎 …
Bo Turner
Mother's is a NOLA must! Mom and pop restaurant with a wait you won't regret. Best bread pudding I've ever had and the jambalaya did not disappoint. Know what you want before you get to the register, then take your receipt and pick a table. Favorite po' boy was the Ferdi Special: a po’ boy packed with baked ham, roast beef, debris and gravy, served dressed
Jeremy C
The Po' boys are fantastic and the shrimp creole was the best I've ever had! If you get a chance, make sure you eat in to take the atmosphere in.
Patsy Agpalza
Mother's is excellent. Its worth the wait and they really know what they are doing when it comes to efficient service. The fried oyster and calamari po' boy was awesome. The gumbo and green beans were warm and rich with flavor. We ordered the Seafood Platter Extra Extra and had so much food left over. It was an excellent feast. The crawfish etoufee was yummy!!!
Nyesha T. Blasingame
Popular New Orleans restaurant where the food was delicious. The bacon crackling they offer as a sample while in line was scrumptious, I wished I could have shipped some home to Ohio. The food was delicious, the bloody Mary's were good. The line was long but moved fast, it's a big space, plethora of great people of all backgrounds!!
Keith Hennett
It was an above average experience. Can't say it was the best PoBoy I have ever had but not bad. Be prepared they xan be busy.
Giorgio Di Gio
Mother's was great. It's usually very crowded but service is always great. The food was wonderful. We had a shrimp po'boy and the seafood gumbo, which were both amazing! My server was excellent and very courteous. I even left some bags after my meal from shopping and my server and she put them away for me to pick up later. I truly appreciate that. I definitely will be back here and recommend anyone in New Orleans to visit this establishment.
Jason Muriel
3.5 stars.didn't get to try enough things so not a complete fair review.tried a couple of poboys and dessert only. Po boys were ok but nothing I'd say you must try. The bread pudding was very good though, although I don't really like bread pudding at all. Cool old school vibe and appearance. Would try other dishes if I returned to New Orleans.
Ricky Moorehead
We ate here twice for lunch since it was close to the hotel Loews. The ferdi was as advertised the debris is so good. There is often a short line outside. To get to the order line. You then order and find a table. Alfred was a very pleasant waiter the first day was ate there. The second day not sure of the ladies names. The second day the guy working the door was older bald guy. He was not pleasant and I listened to him bascially be rude to a customer. The guys had probably asked where he could sit and the guy looked at him and said in a loud rude tone. Get to the next rooom over and sit in a chair. Not hey we have more seating in the next two rooms please find a seat over their. Instead he decide to talk to the young man in a demeaning way. Which was uncalled for.
Ha Nguyen
Omg...I cannot say enough about this place...we were greeted by the owner and he was so friendly and helpful...had the "ferdi" sandwich, one of the best sandwiches I ever had...also had crawfish etouffee the best ever.. we also got a tour of the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen...the staff was next level excellent...thank you for taking care of us....we will see you again soon Mother...
jam
Food was good, service not so good. Pancakes are very thick. Staff appears to be intimidating so customers dont ask for stuff; but I still did and they got it for me. Sign posted that reads , "Tipping not allowed". I wonder why. Staff is constantly busy, on the go go go. Business is booming, resturant is very busy, line moves very fast. Before being seated u must first place ur order at the counter and pay, then seat yourself and place ur receipt on ur table. There's 3 large rooms for seating, plenty of seating. The Decor is definitely new Orleans, great vibe with the old pics on the walls. I also like that u can see some of the cooking in the kitchen. Would I be back yes
Oscar Garcia
Mother's is amazing. It's a must try if you visiting New Orleans. You might have to wait in line, but it's worth it. Po boy are to die for, we had the shrimp and roast beef with the original debris and au jus gravy, delicious! They also have breakfast, make sure to order the breakfast special, with fresh homemade biscuit, and your choice of meat with grits. Hmmm, hmm, hmm!
Karl Chong
The sign near the restroom reads "no tipping, employees will not accept tips"... Walked past on Sunday morning and there's a very long line. But on a Tuesday morning we stroll right in and there are several tables available. The Ferdi special is a while lot of meat, the roast beef and ham are really special, but the debris had tendons and was chewy. Maes omelette was light and fluffy and better than most. The value for money at this restaurant is outstanding, make sure you are hungry!
Lisa Posada-Soto
The food was really good. We went at a time when there was not a huge line like there was every time we passed by. I guess so of the attitudes part of the culture but other then that I was a good experience. I’d go back ..
John Hsieh
A no frill cafeteria styled restaurant. We got take-out and sampled their most famous/favorite items. The Ferdi Special was quite good. It is essentially a French dip sandwich except there is a bunch of "debris" in the dip. The sandwich was cold, which made an interesting combo after dipping. The Best Baked Ham Dinner probably got the "best" label due to 3 very good sides. We got the ham fried, and the ham was surprisingly dry. There was some flavor to the ham, but really unimpressive compared to some of the better pork offering in the neighborhood (i.e. Cochon Butcher). The sides, that's the best part of the meal. Everything under the "Mother's Favorites" section was really good. If anything, order the Combination Platter and add a side of ham (from the "Meats" section). The menu itself was slightly confusing, but the server taking the order at the register seemed used to people being confused and was very helpful in sorting out your incorrect order.
Greg Johnson
First I purchased the crawfish etoufee dinner. Second I purchases the fried seafood platter
I have been satisfied both times. The oysers taste great right about now. The etoufee was also good the first tine I went. They are still to go only due to #COVID19 , but New Orleans is looking much better. Sit down time will be coming back soon
James Fox
This is a post related to my visit to New Orleans in 2004. Did have a chance to grab a po' boy here. Service was quick, pleasant and the sandwich was flavorful and juic.,This place was very busy. Other photos are just a sample of New Orleans, there is so much to take in, at least for me. I like taking photos of everything and anything that catches my eye. This is the place to visit for all of that. Architecture, trolleys, people, graffiti and the special vibe NOLA sends off. Great for walking around or take the St. Charles trolley towards the Mississippi and Tulane. So many places to see, take at least a 3 day stay here. Food, drinks, sights and sounds found nowhere else like those in New Orleans.
Sean Hall
Heard about this place as being a must when visiting, was not disappointed. Even our Uber driver who was local was like man your going to my favorite restaurant. Shout out to Willie! We went for breakfast as we unfortunately only had a short time in NOLA. Would have probably rather gone there for lunch or dinner as the breakfast menu was understandably limited. We had the Famous Ferdi Special which was a mix of ham and roast beef on bread sitting in au jus sauce. Omg this was so yummy and definitely highly recommended by me, my girlfriend, and Uber Willie. We also got the crawfish omelet with grits and some spicy sausage. The omelet was great. You could really taste the crawfish, and the grits were a nice touch too. The sausage wasn't that great but eh everything else made up for it. All in all highly recommend. We'll be going back next time we're in New Orleans.
Diego Marin
Only place in New Orleans I ate at TWICE. Yes, it's THAT good. Worth whatever wait you encounter when you get there. Just make sure you are there past 11 so that you can have the lunch menu. I attached pictures of the Ferdi Special and Soft Shell Crab (BABY Jesus the soft shell is good).
Chase B Bruno
Great food neat atmosphere. Only problem it is the middle of the worst town in America completely digusted with he city and crime
chunky avocado
AMAZING FOOD OMG!!! It was a dining experience I'll never forget. The staff was so friendly and even with the long wait, the food was well worth it. Hope to go back one day!!!! AMAZING FOOD!
Joshua Rivera
A good friend of mine who's been traveling to New Orleans for years told me to come to this place and I was not dissapointed. I love going to local joints and it doesn't get much more local then Mother's.
It's cafeteria style so you select from the menu, order at the register, and they bring the food to you. I went online and knew ahead of time exactly what I wanted.
Their jambalaya was very good, but the main course was really the best part. The friend chicken, home made biscuit, and gritz were exactly what I was looking for and imagined what a classic New Orleans meal would be. The portions were more than generous and the food was very tasty. If i go back to 'Nola, I will make my way to this gem again.
Tristanne Mock
A local favorite hole in the wall type setting, we had the best File Gumbo either of us have ever tried! Also enjoyed the fresh warm biscuits, grits, and du Bris beef roast, definitely recommend this place.
Don Johnson
Excellent food and the wait staff is extremely courteous and helpful. You get a good portion of food, so if you leave hungry it's your own fault. If you're in New Orleans you should definitely check it out.
Starr Sheehan
Mouth watering biscuits! Smoked sausage sandwich and Hot sausage with biscuits and grits! There is usually a line I'm told but it went fairly quickly. Both entrees were pretty good. You grab a menu on your way in and get in line. They also have bloody Mary's and mimosas. After you order you grab a seat and your server will grab your good for you. There is additional seating on the other side of the kitchen if needed.
Jorge Jaimes
The Ferdi Special, amazing - the servers, friendly - the atmosphere, welcoming - the cashiers, none of the above. Overall, it is a great experience.
Marcus Goff
I have been New Orleans several times and everyone always asked did I try Mother's so I made it my first stop. After being hyped up by numerous of people, I was kind of disappointed. The food was just ok. I would recommend Mother's to others being that it is popular and everyone enjoys different meals.
I had the Crawfish Etouffee and cheese grits. It was flavorful but didn't wow me how u was looking to be wowed. My grits were kind of on the runny side but was ok.
The service to get in a be seated was pretty good and quick. After you were seat was another story. The waitress was kind of on the rude side. She had a couple of people in my group scare to ask for more napkins. Which I thought was funny after they told me.
SCOTT STARK
This place is like home! Great that it's named Mother's. I've been coming to N.O. for awhile, it is not a trip until I sit my behind at Mother's. Classic fair, served counter style, always a line, but it is worth it. Your order can be as complex or as simple as you want! Breakfast all day, HUGE portions, my standard......spicy sausage with grits plus biscuit........shooooooooot , my mouth is watering now. If you love yourself even slightly, go to Mother's .
John
After reading the reviews on mother’s, we decided to check it out. They tell you to grab a menu at the door and go order. You get a recipe and take it to your table where a server grabs it and comes back with your food
I ordered a shrimp po-boy and crawfish Étouffée. The po-boy was good, not the best I’d ever had, but the Étouffée was off the hook. We made a dumb seat decision and seat by the kitchen. Apparently the staff eats there as well and it was the end of the night so they really didn’t care that we were trying to have a nice quite meal.
Anyway, the experience was ok and the food was good
Olivia Covarrubias
Mother's Restaurant has some great food. There were four of us that shared several plates. We all ordered something different. My favorite is the Jambalaya and the red beans and rice dish along with the extra sausages that we ordered! I recommend going here and trying a little bit of everything. The Jambalaya was not overly spicy either.
Burl Ross
Where do I start... My wife and I have visited this place more than I care to share. Always satisfied, full, and happy when we're done.
I highly recommend the red beans and rice, don't forget the debris! Great southern comfort food you're looking for in New Orleans with a welcoming staff.
Minh Hien Lai
Poboy was good but the gumbo was a disappointment.
Fulbert Cue
O wow I don't have the vocab to describe. It is a must go. Absolutely terrific. Flavor explosion! Those po boys, I don't know what they're called because it was my friends that ordered it but wow o wow. So juicy and the au jus makes it more succulent.
As for what I ordered, I ordered cups each of jambalaya, seafood gumbo and crawfish etoufee. Jambalaya, flavorful, nice and moist, cajun, not too spicy (just a kick) not too salty, definitely savory. Combinations of all the flavor makes this quite the hearty meal. Seafood gumbo, not watery but not thick that its looks like goop. Fresh used ingredients, also heart warming. Add a bit of the hot sauce if you like but it's great as is. Crawfish etoufee, absolutely a must. Not to say the others aren't but if I wanted just one of something, this will be my choice. Very satisfying. I ate it with my imagination to sense the flavors and like I said, I don't have the vocab. New Orleans is a foodie town and Mothers is a must go.
Carrie Vail
The ordering experience is different, but that's part of the charm. We had grits and creole shrimp for breakfast - awesome!
Brenda Denton
Heard a lot of great reviews. Going there is a bit disappointing. Be prepared and maybe you won't be disappointed. You wait in line to order your food. After you order and pay you go find a table. Good luck with that. Then they bring you your food. It is very odd and I'm not sure it works very well but this is the way they have been doing it for years. The Baked Ham was very good and the cheesy grits fabulous. I'm just not sure I like the atmosphere and everyone who works there seems focused on one thing only. Get as many people through as fast as possible and that's it.
Google User
Their seafood gumbo was pretty great but the Jerry's jambalaya was alright. I feel their serving size for the price could be larger, there was also a wait time for us to get in in the new Orleans heat. The cashier was a bit rude but our server was fine. It's a casual place to eat in, nothing fancy. But if you're a fan of gumbo then you won't be disappointed.
Bri Goodwin
I always go to mothers when in town. Everything is always amazing from the food to the atmosphere. If those walls could talk the stories they could tell. In mothers every president since JFK has been going there.
Arash D
Place is serving food since 1938 which is good enough reason to go there and try the atmosphere.
Food was really tasty n was prepared super fast. Environment was exactly as i expected. There are plenty of parking around. What else do u want to go n try the food?
Britt
The potato salad and the crawfish etoufee were amazing. This is definitely a place I'll always come back to when I visit New Orleans.
Andrew Jordan
This place was recommended by a friend and I'm so glad we tried it on our trip to NOLA. The line formed quickly outside, but we were ushered in without a long wait. The system they have in place is pretty cool and they have it on lock down -- you stand in line to place your order and then they already have a designated table for you to sit at. After you order and pay, your server brings out your food and checks on you. That was all fine, but the food was killer. We didn't try the ham, for which they're famous for, but we did try the Sausage, which was amazing. I had the Biscuits, egg, and meat sandwich... and oh my god are the biscuits so good. If for nothing else, just come here and eat a biscuit! The Bloody Mary was good and my family was happy with their food. Highly recommend this place. My only regret is that we didn't come back and eat there again during our trip. Next time.
Alison Hernandez
Excellent food, great service! The Debris Po' Boy and Baked Ham was amazing! Definitely need to check out Mother's when in New Orleans.
John Scalera
Ordered the large bowl of crawfish étouffée and the bread pudding.
The etouffee was good, but not the best. My opinion it’s more gumbo like and not enough crawfish, but would order again in a pinch.
The bread pudding on the other hand is out of this world and the picture doesn’t do it any kind of justice how delicious it is.
LaCreisha Kennedy
Mind Blown completely away! The food here is sooooo delicious. The staff is so friendly and filled with the authentic New Orleans charm. Please be aware of the time you arrive! It is recommended that you’re there right before the doors open because you just might have to wait in line outside the restaurant. The prices are great and you get so much food for your buck!!!
Tatyana T (Tate & Deco)
What huge pancakes I should have gotten 1 the fried catfish was good as well !! Homemade biscuits for sure … Self seating you place your order and pay with the front end person
zahra bahremandi
Old fashioned restaurant, sometimes can be really busy and you have to stand in line.
Ellie Cervantes-Gros
An amazing experience at Mother's Restaurant in New Orleans! It is worth the wait in line and definitely worth the hype. If you want some good ol' fashioned Cajun, Creole, and American food, THIS IS YOUR SPOT. The portions are plentiful, the place is clean, and the staff is the most productive and professional individuals you will ever get to meet. Service with a smile. Please make time to go and take your time to enjoy their divine cuisine. Best Cajun and Creole food I have had in NOLA! Hands down!
ChasnChuck DidntSuck
Mother's seems to be the type of place where you're either going to have a fantastic experience or you're not. I have had people tell me they love this place more than anywhere else and I've had people tell me they'd never go there again. On this specific trip, we were content.
We ordered some grits with debris and their famous "Ferdi Special" Po-Boy which comes with ham, roast beef, and debris. To drink I will say that the Bloody Mary was just middle of the road. Flavor wasn't bad but a little heavy on the horseradish, average size, average price.
The grits with debris was a solid dish. The jus coming off the debris mixed in with the grits was a really nice bite. I would order this again.
The Ferdi Special was good, but I don't know that it was so good that they would say this is "their thing". The bite of the Ferdi after dipping it into the jus from the debris was a much better bite though. I'd recommend you ordering a side of the jus with this sandwich. I also added some of the herbed oil on the table for the last couple bites and that was nice too. Made it closer to a Chicago Beef style sandwich with the jus and the oil.
This is a cafeteria style stop so if you're prissy about where you eat, don't come here. Real food for real folks and it was definitely a meal I'd go for again. I'd really like to try the gumbo and baked ham dinner next time around.
Nicholas Efstathiou
The two stars are for the ham, cocktail sauce, and how quickly the line moved to order. I had the combo shrimp and catfish plate with red beans and rice, French Fries, and Dr. Pepper. My wife had a baked ham special. The ham was great, nice flavor that was not tough.
It took a little while to get the food and I never received the French Fries. The waiter said he was going to bring them after they were cooked. The shrimp and catfish tasted like it was frozen and not fresh.
Overall, it was okay. I just expected better food from this place.
zahra yusah
The pic doesn’t look like much but the cheesy grits next to the omelette was very well made. Omelette was very filling. And it felt very homey inside, like your mom/grandma just made that food for you.
amruta naik
We had large orange juice, mimosa, egg Po'boy, and sea food gumbo (regular) and bread pudding with brandy sauce. Good grab after parade. Just one thing the size of the gumbo was really small for the size.
Tegan Straughen
A more local dive with good ol' home cooking. The rice and beans did not disappoint, especially when doused with crystals hot sauce (optional). The chicken gumbo was okay, I think seafood may be the way to go if you're craving gumbo.
Nikko Kinney
Went to Mother's this morning for breakfast with my family, the food was AMAZING! The atmosphere was real neat they had all kinds of soldiers and military memorabilia on the walls. the way you order is real simple, walk up to the register order your food sit down at the table with your receipt someone will come and grab it and get your food! Very good comfort home style food! Pleasent people and would recommend going if your around!
Inge Lewis
Huge portions! Place was clean and not to busy when we visited. Staff was really nice. Will definitely go again!
Kelli Nakagama
Whether you’re going for a traditional breakfast like waffles or the Mother’s special Po Boy with Debris, there are two things to know about Mother’s: 1, there will be a line (but it will be worth it!) and 2, the portions are huge (but it will be delicious!). The cafeteria-like spot was full of friendly staff and the food was so good we went two days in a row.
Paula Allen
Great atmosphere. Delicious food. Very casual. The walls are covered with generations of famous people who have visited this historic New Orleans gem.
Ams
Food was amazing, portions were very generous. I had a smoked sausage po boy that was so delicious enough to feed two.
Carla Hoover
Fabulous! 10 stars...the food was great, but the staff made it exceptionally great! I had grits etouffe
Rick Zuniga
Been to New Orleans twice. I made sure to come here both times. The staff knows what the true definition of "Southern Hospitality" is. They are awesome. The food is so good. It is comfort soul food at its best. The homemade biscuits are a meal by itself but that didn't stop me from getting the Omelette with Craw fish Etouffee. The Baked Ham is definitely worth the taste. I loved their coffee also. You will not be disappointed!
