Reviews of Jack Dempsey's Restaurant
Talk about an amazing place to relive old New Orleans. The willing service with a smile. The food to die for and the ambiance of what was once New Orleans very own.
Met with the owner today and just enjoyed listening to her. Although in a challenging and blighted area since Hurricane Katrina and the closure of the Military installation across the street there remains a beacon of old New Orleans and music scene. Support these places so we both don’t starve…
The chicken was decent, could’ve been a little juicier. The flavor of the chicken was good, just really dry. Toast was REALLLLY soggy, almost wet. macaroni was lukewarm, I’m not sure why it wasn’t hot. it was mildly busy, but the wait wasn’t too long. Id return, i’d just get something different next time.
A birthday party of 10, the last of us arrived very late, which pushed things 15-20 minutes beyond their normal closing time. Yet, they were patient and wonderfully courteous throughout. The food ranged from delicious to spectacular, with everyone enjoying their meal. The prices were more than reasonable for the meal we enjoyed. Overall, a most excellent experience.
Great little gem in New Orleans!! We stopped by for a late lunch. We got 1/2 a catfish po boy with gumbo and we had to try their famous Mac and cheese. Everything was delicious and the staff was great!!!
An Ole Time Favorite still great, at least for seafood. Fried Seafood platter is great, I think they can give you more then 4 Oysters on your plat for the price! I also think they should allow people to try another side besides Gumbo because it's not so good. The Char grilled Oysters are just okay, Fried Calamari is pretty darn good as well. Haven't tried their steak but I'm thinking about it.
Great food and service with a warm welcome. Everything was delicious! Packing in the rear of the restaurant. Don't let the road improvements keep you away.
Incredibly great food! The grilled oysters were the best! I also had the fried shrimp poor boy!
Excellent food in a comfortable environment. Wish I lived in New Orleans as I would love to eat their again!
I have not been to Jack Dempsey's in many, many years. I recall that the food was always good, however, on this visit, the highlight was the service👍. Our food server was fantastic. And even though she didn't eat seafood 😁, she was able to provide us with information and ensure that our dining experience was fantastic! I would highly recommend it. It was a slow, rainy l, short service day so that made the eating experience extra cozy. The only feedback around the food that I would recommend would be more cheese on the macaroni Zitti and a more baked preparation. I remember visiting in the past and it was always extra Stretchy cheesy and the Zitti slightly crusty. Other than that, everything was great :)
A local favorite that's located off the beaten path. If you are in town and you want to get away from The French Quarters and try something different. Well this is the place. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The food was cooked perfectly. Fresh, hot and cooked to order. You can't go wrong choosing Jack Dempsey's Restaurant.
Not my favorite. The appetizers were great, our redfish and lobster were not good. Everyone else ( 5 others) enjoyed their meals. Our redfish was replaced with the flounder and that was better. Staff was friendly and accommodating, offering to replace our meals. Desserts were all delicious.
classic New Orleans seafood restaurant... I often go for the daily lunch special... The catfish is my favorite.
Even a half order of onion rings is hefty. (Try those dipped in the remoulade sauce)
Solid spot for seafood. Bread pudding was a bit lacking (raisins? Grosss), but service and sangria were on point! Good family vibe, very attentive service. Veal po boy sandwich was solid too.
Get their crab. It's amazing. Our service was very attentive as well. A lowkey, no-frills kind of place.
Wasn't a huge fan of the crawfish cakes, but everything else made up for it.
I love Jack Dempsey's, we go there occasionally and the food and service is always great. I am so glad they finally open after the lockdown, but you need a reservation for now, we got lucky as there was a table available - they have to space people due to the coronavirus. The portions are huge, you can easily split a plate, we got chicken and red fish mix with a salad , and it was enough for 2 people. Very nice and enjoyable local hangout.
I love this place! This is where the locals go and I understand why. The food is delicious and they serve large portions at reasonable prices. The softshell crabs were fat and cooked to perfection, (Big thanks to our chef, John Wayne). The stuffed flounder was tasty and the 3 pounds of crawfish kept us busy for hours. We had the nicest, most attentive server, who kept our glasses full and never made us feel rushed. This was one of my favorite places in NOLA.
I'll try another time. The food I ordered was alright. The fried seafood looked and smelled amazing. I'm trying it next.
If you like good, fresh, no frills seafood, this is your place. My dad wanted stuffed flounder, like he could get when he went to Tulane in the early 60’s. This was one of the few restaurants I could find that had it on the menu.
We split a dozen char grilled oysters. They were right sized, plump and of course delish.
Dad got his stuffed flounder which he thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the seafood platter which way by far the largest amount of food I have ever had on a seafood platter. The shrimp and oysters were plentiful and they gave me TEN pieces of fish. I couldn’t eat it all. No report on desert, there was no room for it.
Service was great too.
Great local place for some classic New Orleans fare. Enjoyed the chargrilled oysters, frog legs and a stuffed crab po'boy last time I was there.
Quick lunch with the Ladies. Wasn't crowded so that was a plus. Good food and portion size was perfect.
Great meal, had the charbroiled Redfish with fries and a cup of gumbo. Very friendly and attentive staff, they did everything well!
Okay so I was absolutely blown away by this place, the flavors were absolutely amazing, not to mention the best service! The seasoning on everything, the batter for the onion rings, it was all incredible and I couldn’t imagine a single complaint!
The food is great!!!! The only thing I did not agree with was the 35 cent charge for takeout. I was not told in advance about charge.
wonderful food and not filled with tourists, has a home grown feel and the food was home style. Not super expensive and a true NOLA food choice. If you want to get out of the tourist area, come here. Not a huge ways away, but worth the Uber. Also has a few things nearby to do so it isnt a one and done, a nice wine place right next door. Highly suggest for some gumbo and various other NOLA originals.
Pretty good IT has been a whi6since my last visit and they didn't disappoint. However they could put more oysters (4) on the seafood platter and allow to substitute the gumbo for something else. The gumbo wasn't good. Everything else was good.
Very nice service. Supper Seafood Platter was delightful. Crab meat Augratin was very savory. I enjoyed the onion rings, which were hot and fried to perfection. Great 1st social distancing restaurant experience.
Historical little spot. Definitely drive or uber over. Make sure to call ahead for availability. Can't split checks so make sure you like who you take with you 😊
Jack Dempsey's was an interesting experience. It's located somewhere inside the 9th circle of hell. I was quite relieved to make it to the entrance without getting mugged. However, once I was safely inside, I felt instantly at peace. This is a no frills kind of place; you get in, you eat, and then you get the hell out. The food was damn good, though. My wife loved her bowl of gumbo and the stuffed crab balls. My stuffed crab po boy hit the spot, as well. I would definitely come back.
This place got all the goods. I was recommended to go here and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the frog legs and oyster platter with a side of fries. Nearly $40 of goodness
Considering, my whole life i heard of this place. I ate there for the first time and had a good meal. GUMBO was a side item.
I got the stuffed flounder and omg it was SO GOOD!
It was even enough for me to have for lunch the next day also AND it was STILL SO VERY GOOD the next day too!
Our waiter was a very nice young gentleman and very attentive to our needs without us having to ask for things!
Will absolutely be visiting again!
This amazing jewel is hidden away deep in NOLA. Definitely recommend the gumbo and the red fish Pontchartrain. Staff was amazing as was the food. This is a must stop for your trip to New Orleans
Amazing food and service. You better come extra hungry, because the portions are massive. Some of the best food I've ever had! These pictures are the food we had left over after we ate!
Everything was top nthis month..our new #1..the best!!! No questions!!
Everything..otch.Now # 1
September, 2022.still #1 for oysters char broiled!! No one even close!! Great service, as always. Ambiance 10. The best in the city right now!!
Yum yum! All this food for such a great price! Mac and cheese me please! Crab balls are a must, along with the delicious fish and shrimp.
The food has always been amazing! A little tight most times in space but the food is sooooo worth it.
With the pandemic it's spaced out but be ready for a wait or go early on a weekday but nights wear comfortable shoes.
For some reason the fish was so thin and the onion rings was fried to hard oh the Mac wasn't the same n the whole seafood platter wasn't good what the crab balls was don't know probably different cooks but wasn't the jack Dempsey I was craving for sorry hands down
Nice atmosphere.off the main Bourbon st.seen .didn't like the gumbo tasted like it came from a can. Its off the main drag take buss #5from down town.
I had the blackened redfish for lunch and it was delicious. The service was excellent too. My friend had the stuffed trout and said it was excellent too. I will be back.
The drinks are to die for! You leave with your belly full and feeling good. I had the blacken chicken with fries okra and it was delish. Nice place for dinner and drinks.
I love, love, love this place great dishes.
I enjoy the stuff flounder, I'm drooling 🤤
Everything is soooooo gooooood
In town visiting. Tried this place based on a recommendation and it didn't disappoint. It's tucked away in a neighborhood, small with suitable parking. Everything we tried was delicious. We did to go so we ordered from the bar. Bartender was friendly and had good conversation while we waited.
Will try again.
This is an excellent place for a business meal, date outing, family dinner, or solitary dining. Servings are generous, excellently cooked, and contrary to online price ratings very economical for what is served. Limited parking. Great staff.
Our party had the veal cutlet platter, catfish and crawfish half&half, catfish and shrimp half&half, chicken po'boy and bread pudding for dessert. It was all wonderful! Great quick service! Friendly staff!
Fantastic food and a very fabulous staff interaction.
Food here is excellent never let's me down. Love this place
Besides getting our order wrong, the food was good.
Onion ring appetizer was goid. I got the shrimp and oyster Po boy undressed and did my sauces on the side. I'd go back to try their seafood platters.
Excellent place to eat
First time trying them out. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The best onion rings in town!!! I had the seafood platter with Mac and cheese. Everything was seasoned to perfection!!! The portions were huge. You definitely get your monies worth. The sangria was the best I've had since leaving Texas.
The food at this place is absolutely amazing. The portions are huge. So make sure you're hungry. Highly recommended!!
Food was great! Definitely a great place to get away from all the hustle and bustle from bourbon st and the heat! Drinks were also very good.
We are members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, INC. This was a great place for seafood. I guess this is the reason why they are always crowded. I will recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Nothing fancy or hipster.. just real good local food. Everything tasted really fresh!
Food was good, prices seemed fair and staff was friendly. It was a small place, which have it a home feel. I did not try any alcoholic beverage though they did have them.
Food was great! Atmosphere was very cool and casual. Our waitress was attentive and hilarious.
Not Jack Dempsey the boxer as we thought butJD the reporter. Great food. Awesome friendly staff. Everything we ate was tasty and so good. Charbroiled oysters were done perfectly. Would love to go back.
We had a great time and even better food!
Had a little wait wasn't bad,. Food was great served hot. Service on point. Definitely will revisit. Parking need a little more space.
Food was good service was great and have enough food to appreciate the price
Don't let the location and lack of parking fool you. This place is delicious! Very clean inside. Excellent wait staff! So friendly and helpful. The onion rings & shrimp I had were great. My husband had frog legs and really enjoyed them. Half orders of onion rings are plenty.
Amazing from start to finish! From the hostess to dessert everything was great! Me and my friends’s last day in New Orleans, we ate here. We ordered the seafood platter, our waitress was kind enough to let us know the platter was big enough for all of us. The food was absolutely delicious! We also ordered oysters and frog legs - simply amazing.. and chocolate dessert was perfectly balanced in sweetness. Don’t know when we are coming back but will definitely will all our friends from Atlanta whoever visits NOLA.
Local stop. Efficient and personable waitress got us in and out quickly as we only had an hour before the parade began. Broiled oysters and red Ponchatrain fish with crab was cooked to perfection
Very good food, blackened redfish was fantastic!
Not as good as they use to be. The drinks specials weren't the best. Some of the food didn't have much seasoning. The Mac and cheese was bomb as well as the stuff flounder.
Great local, traditional restaurant. Great food!
I was truly amazed at this place. When my order came out the kitchen, I thought it belong to a big party table. The entree size are the best sizes and doesn't break your pockets.. The Drinks are so good. THE STAFF ARE PHONOMANAL.
Great food! Authentic Louisiana goodness!!
Clean, old school dining area serving a variety of very good seafood at a reasonable price. You will not go away hungry. Great onion rings!
We had a great time. Ice cold beers and the food was delicious!!! Our server David was extra friendly & professional!! We'll be back soon. Thanks!!!
Local friend kept talking this place up as a place they've been going to since they were kids and while half the stuff they recco'd was meh, I was low key rolling my eyes, but this *IS* the real deal.
Flavorful gumbo with a nice thick roue that topped the other two I'd tried in the French Quarter. The fried seafood platter was light, hot, and delicious-- the oysters, THE OYSTERS. The mac'n'cheese is to die for-- took the leftover home and topped it with my friend's homemade red gravy. I could go on and on.
Love the vibe, service is good, and if I could recommend any local spot for a first time visitor this would be it.
Great onion rings, the Dempsey platter is a big selection of food for 2.
Go there every year to celebrate a birthday it's great every time
If you a great meal for you means "a lot of good food" Jack Dempsey's is the place!
Great for groups, very generous servings. Not only great fried food, good steaks, crab, grilled fish and salads! Always a memorable experience!
Delicious! Got the platter with fried catfish, oysters, shrimp, crab balls and crawfish pie, cooked to perfection. The waitress was excellent even though the place was packed. See ya next time I'm in town.
Very old school food. I liked the shrimp and crab salad. The onion rings are very heavy and thick...not my thing. The drinks are strong love it! Like i said this is old school fare here. I loved the service my waitress was very nice and very attentive. Ill be back thanks :)
Great spot to stop in to. Parking was kinda tight. The staff were extra friendly. A lot of great items on the menu. Saw many plates that came out with some good looking food on them, can't wait to come back and try more items. A few of my grill chicken breast strips could've cooked a few more minutes, but over all it was good. The drinks were nice I only tasted one due to the fact I had to drive two hours, but hey there is always a next time. I definitely plan to come back to this spot whenever I come to town. I actually saved it in my phone under favorites. If you are near by stop in and treat yourself!
Staff was nice, good service. Broiled crab claws were delicious and maybe the hottest (temperature) fried seafood I've ever been served in a restaurant. That was awesome. Flavor... Very middle of the road, not much flavor at all. It was kind of strange.
All in all, I will go back. Maybe try some of the other entrees.
Ice cold beer. Very very cold. 👍
Went here last night for my 25th wedding anniversary. I just wanted to go to an old school, New Orleans style neighborhood restaurant. Food was great and reasonably priced plus the portion sizes are enough to have some to take home! The service was excellent!
My family and I visit this restaurant at least once a month. We love it. The service is excellent. After a few visits, you are called by name as if you were a relative. I ordered my Christmas dinner and was very please with the taste, quality and price. Worth your time.
Jack Dempsey's has been one of the best seafood places in New Orleans for the better part of half a century. It has always been one of my most highly referred and suggested places to go to all of my customers for many years. Service is impeccable and personal and of course the food is just perfect, just like it was in my youth. What a great birthday dinner this was.
The last time I went they misheard my order and brought shrimp instead of catfish. The inside reminds me of places my grandparents took me 25 years ago that are no longer in business. No worries, RUN, don't walk to check out this amazing pinnacle of fried seafood. Top 5 restaurant in a top 5 US food city.
Always excellent food and excellent customer service!
Friendly wait staff and excellent appetizers. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because the salads are served over romaine with iceberg. I personally feel like iceberg lettuce is not salad material. I would eat there again.
Amazing seafood restaurant... Laid back, quiet atmosphere, huge portions. The fish, shrimp, and oysters were fried crispy like I like it and delicious. The portions are gigantic... The food was amazing and the customer service was superb. I'll certainly be back because it is delicious food for a good value and pretty laid back!
Neighborhood creole restaurant with a selection of fried and blackened fish and seafood. Good service, food came quickly, and portions were large and tasty.
Food was below average. Maybe because we got it to go but my oyster platter was some soggy bread at the bottom of twelve fried, bland oysters. Mac an cheese was pretty good though.
The fried crayfish & shrimp platter was awesome. Great drinks especially the adult lemonade.
Stopped on our way home to Dallas. Food was excellent! Service was superb; efficient and very fast. The place is super clean too. I definitely recommend it. Must try the macaroni and the gumbo is delicious as well!!
I almost hate to give this hidden gem a glowing review for fear that it will become just another tourist trap but I must. This unassuming local favorite was recommended by our Uber driver and he nailed it! The soft shell crabs were incredible. We also had the catfish and a sampler platter which were all fried to a buttery golden perfection. Even the fries ,which are normally pushed to the side by me, were perfect. Our waitress was sweet and charming with a delightful Louisiana accent and was quick with the service without being overbearing. Also, the beers were ice cold and inexpensive. Absolutely the best dinner we had in our too short weekend visit to NOLA. The only thing I regret is that I didn't try the mac and cheese. Apparently it's a local favorite. Oh darn, I guess we will have to come back down here soon again. I hate that. ;)
A classic spot but there are better places to get fried seafood. Wasn't bad, but one visit is enough. Fries were great. Oyster and shrimp po'boys were good but nothing I will remember in a week.
The Gumbo was amazing. I have eaten gumbo many different times. The gumbo at this place far exceeds all other. You can't say you have had Gumbo until you eat it here.
Hands down, the best seafood in New Orleans!!! The soft shell crab is to die for! And the portions? You'll go home full and still have enough leftovers for the next day. Wait staff is top notch also. Highly recommend!
Great drinks, perfect service, and plenty to choose from. My only suggestion, don't bother with ordering a steak here, stick with the seafood!
Its not a fancy place, more of a mom and pop shop. My mother in law purchased a plate from here and couldn't eat it all, so she shared it with the house. My boyfriend tasted it, and told me to come on. Didn't know where we were going, but ended up here. It was very family friendly and took our orders quickly. We didn't have to wait long for the food either. I suggest this place for those who do not mind to look outside the exterior and want good food.
Very over rated food was not that good
I took my lovely bride for her birthday. She hadn't been there in 20 years. I had never been there. We were both very pleased. Not over priced and very large portions. I'll go so far as to say it was the best seafood platter I have ever had. It even has redfish on it. Wow! That was impressive. We will go back.
Great food, ambiance and staff. They've been serving good food for decades. Located in the historic Bywater neighborhood.
Excellent atmosphere in an older section of New Orleans. Seafood was superior. Amazing how fresh the food was. I especially enjoyed the crab balls. Next time I visit New Orleans I will add this spot to my list.
I love the blackened reddish and Mac and cheese.. best around
Jack Dempsey's truly embodies everything you could ever want in a local New Orleans style family restaurant. The food is always hot and perfectly prepared. The service staff are attentive but very skilled in knowing how to let you enjoy your party, event or just a nice lunch. Truly a must stop for anybody wanting to experience great New Orleans food and culture. You should always eat were the locals eat.
We arrived at 1:58 pm on a Tuesday, not realizing the restaurant closed at 2 pm that day (it's open for dinner four nights a week, but get there early because it closes at 8 or 9 pm those nights). The last customers left as we walked in and the staff was shutting down. We assumed we'd be turned away. But to our relief and surprise, we were welcomed warmly and shown to a table, where we received excellent service and a fine meal. We ordered a seafood platter for $25, which was easily enough food for the both of us (it came with two sides), plus two Diet Cokes, which came in huge plastic cups, as did the water I requested. (I love getting a big cup or a pitcher so I don't have to keep flagging down someone for refills.) I'd read a lot of reviews of Jack Dempsey's and was looking for traditional New Orleans food in a casual atmosphere and the famous big portions. Jack Dempsey's lived up to its billing.
O! I love this place. My 1st time eating here was in 2012 when I was at the Essence Festival. I had to come back while I was at the 2018 Bayou Classic. The redfish and shrimp were fantastic. The Crawfish pies were very good. I will be returning here on my next trip to New Orleans.
Quick and delicious. We got there early and they were packed before we left. Well done and will return.
A wonderful experience. I do suggest that you split entrees with people that you go with though, the plates are huge and more than enough to split between two people (or take some home for the next day). Definitely go for the seafood. Also had great service while I was there.
I ordered $58 worth of food. The chargrilled oysters was gritty, no flavor, hardly no cheese. Mac n cheese wasn't that good but tolerable. The frog legs platter was disappointing as well, 3 frog legs, no flavor, and too much batter. The fries wasn't that good either. The stuff trout was ok, but garlic powder, onion powder, and other seasonings do exist. The crab balls was AMAZING! That's the only reason I gave them three stars, along with the service was good.
Really attentive service and amazing food. Hole in the wall place with great food and drinks. Try the blackened chicken Po Boy and Charbroiled oysters!
Food was great. However customer service less desirable. I ordered a 16.95 meal and 3 cheesecakes at 5.95. The lady came back and initially gave me 3 dollars. I wasn't paying attention gave her 50, so I looked in the bag and no cheesecake but two meals. I had her come back to the car and she was apologetic and went to get cheesecake and took the meal. She then came back and gave me a 5 dollar bill. Now I gave her back the change initially when it was wrong. So now I only have 5 dollars change. I explained the math and I should have close to 11 dollars because meal with an 11%tax would have been 38 dollars. This went on for about 20 mins. I took the 5 dollars and left. Was happy with meal but not with the simple math of it all. I was going to leave a tip but oh well.
Lunch date Blackened Redfish soooo good Live Laugh 😆 Love ❤️😘The onion rings are delicious 😋 …
The atmosphere was family oriented which I love as soon as we hit the door a older group of people welcome us the food and our waitress was fantastic. 11ppl no calling ahead it was perfect. They sang into action like the pros that they where thank you
My first time eating there but certainly not my last! Food was excellent. Super fresh and quite delicious. Had the blackened red fish with mac and cheese. Can't wait to go back.
The broiled shrimp was beyond delicious. There was way too much food, and my stomach isn't that big. Leftovers were wonderful!
AMAZING!!!! Friendly staff and delicious food. Fried catfish Yum!
My wife and I was celebrating our 32nd Wedding Anniversary and we wanted to eat at this establishment. I was stationed across the street as a U.S. Marine (32 years ago)...We thoroughly enjoyed the great fresh food and e plan to come back soon from Alabama...the service was super...Thanks
Thank you, thank you Dempsey. We ordered several side dishes for our Christmas dinner. Not only did it save me a ton of work, they were absolutely delicious. The prices are extremely fair. Heating was a breeze. We plan to make the mirlitons , oyster dressing, and Mac and cheese a part of our holiday meal from now on.
Go to spot 4 good seafood. This place has been very reliable over the years!! No matter what- quality and quantity remains the same. Heads up: they take reservations these days but u can possibly still get in as a walk in if it's not too busy.
The food was good. They don't have a children menu.
The super seafood platter is so much food and really can be split between two people easily while the Dempsey platter can be shared with 4. Lighting is a bit rough because it is just lit with neon signs and such. Food is good, but I would recommend the red fish especially.
My 1st stop EVERYTIME I visit New Orleans!
Good food they give you your money worth
The oyster are very small and lot of batter they put to many french fries on your plate. The shrimp are really good
Had a wonderful dinner at Jack Dempsey's Restaurant last night. Love to have seafood when we visit New Orleans because it's so fresh. We can't get it in central Illinois. I had the surf and turf with a ribeye and lobster. Outstanding and truly enjoyable. My wife had the redfish and we both had a side of mac n cheese. My brother had the veal which I tried and I must say every bite I had was fantastic. Pleasant environment and good service. Thanks for a great dining experience Jack Dempsey's Restaurant.
Fried, fried, fried. Nearly everything on the menu is fried, except for a couple of grilled fish choices and a chicken item or two. Not a huge selection, either, but what they do have is decent. Fried fish, shrimp, catfish, and oyster platters and po-boys reign this casual fried seafood joint. The food itself is fresh, very heavily breaded and very well fried, and if you like a heavy crunch to your fried seafood, then you'll love Dempsey's. The wait staff is very New Orleans and very attentive and friendly. Parking is often a pain and wait times can exceed a half hour or more at dinnertime, especially on weekends, but the wait isn't really too bad because there are usually a few interesting and friendly locals to chat causally with that are waiting along with you.
We've been coming here since I was a child. The seafood platter is fabulous and feeds several people.
Stuffed flounder was great. Parking is a little tight, but extra room on side street. Platters are enough for two or three people. Good spot to sit with a friend and enjoy seafood. Would definitely return.
We had the seafood platter for 2, that may be able to feed 4. It starts with 2 small bowls of gumbo, then a platter of catfish, shrimp, oysters, crab balls and crayfish pies. You get to pick two sides and we got the French fries, and the baked macaroni and cheese. Everything was cooked to perfection and served hot. It's a must place to eat if you are in the area and hungry.
Expensive + they didn't give any tatar sauce or anything else that should've come with the fried shrimp and Fish. Had to eat it dry when we went home.
We had a good assortment of fried foods. Crispy, not soggy. The service dealt well with 2 concurrent birthday parties. They closed at 8, which seemed really early to me, but we had plenty of time.
Delicious food and fast service.
We are out of towners who tried this neighborhood seafood restaurant based upon glowing reviews. We were not disappointed! Friendly service, massive portions and delicious food. We plan on being regulars.
I really enjoy this New Orleans classic. It s moderate in it s pricing, and it s decor is inner-city simple . The staff are down home and friendly. For lunch I had the shrimp plate with coleslaw ($9.95), my father had the catfish plate with French fries ($9.95), and my sister had the crab salad ($9.95). The fried dishes were not the least bit greasy, and my sister's salad was just very tasty. This is one of the New Orleans places not to miss, and do try their baked macaroni. RJT
Nice oldschool dining experience! The food is very fresh, flavorful, and well-priced. If you are looking for some delicious seafood, large portions, clean atmosphere, and warm customer service, check them out!
It been a great place to go to get some real good seafood for years now. My mom introduced me to it long time ago and I am glad I can share it my little family. It a great place to go out and enjoy some good food and beverage.
It was just a traditional New Orleans seafood restaurant, but not as many choices of non-fried foods. Cool, dark, down-home interior, giant red plastic cups, metal utensils in wax paper envelopes. Gumbo was like brown gravy with some shrimp in it, kinda grainy. Stuffed artichoke was good warm and big. Potato salad was great, salty and tasted like olives with no olives, chopped up small, no big chunks, which I like. Mac n cheese not good, penne pasta in cheese sauce with hardened cheese on top. Fried oysters were good. You can get shrimp fried, broiled, blackened, grilled, but I'm not sure that's clear from menu.
You allbetter believe this hype because this restaurant doesn't play with its amazing food. The charm of this tiny spot is unbelievable especially for an outsider from Hollywood. Do yourself a favor and try the crabs, shrimp and fish here.
The Soft Shelled crab poboy was incredible as my husband had the seafood platter. It was huge and delicious! The gumbo was just so-so! Without a doubt, our staple restaurant for Seafood! Awesome!
The server was great she was very helpful in explaining the amount of food on the platter which allow us to make a decision about how many plates to order for 10 people. We started with 2 appetizers fried. Okra and onion rings
Our our entrees were 2 seafood platterse enough to feed 2 people but we were able to serve 3 people on each one.
The food was fried with the same batter for everything so it all tasted the same
There wasn't much favor from the okra to the onion rings the seasoning was very bland but it did have alot of salt which took away that actual taste of each entree shrimp okra onion rings. I would have preferred each item be seasoned separate and then a different batter for the fish and shrimp
I will not refer this restaurant in the future.
We had to order water just to take away the after taste of the saltyNess
My review is based on myself and others at the table
Once we returned home 2 people fail sick the the stomach
Jack Dempsey would've been disapproved of the outcome of the dishe's preparation.
Breaded veal is very good, with a side of "red gravy". Three pieces of veal with a decent amount of Mac n cheese, and a side salad and drink for under $15 is a great deal. Plus the food tastes great.
A little disappointed. Hadn't been there in a while and certainly not the same quality of food that I remembered. Perhaps just a bad night because this is the only time I went and the food was not up to par. Very very nice wait staff. I will definitely go back and give them another chance.
Jack Dempsey's has always been great! They have frying down to a science, you will not find greasy food there. #superseafoodplatter #mac&cheese
Always good when I go! Seafood entrée at it best.
My Fraternity brothers came down for a convention. This place showed up love. I introduced them to frog legs. I was very impressed with their service and the food was fantastic.
Foods always good & service
Their payment policy is utterly ridiculous (as far as no more than four per group and that the form of payment has to be the same!) But, fortunately the food and drink was good!
However, that policy will cause their business to suffer.
This long time family owed Gem still serves the best Seafood dishes in Nola area. Tbe fried catfish platter ,Fried SHRIMP, Stuffed Crabs are just DELICIOUS, and of coarse topped off w/ 1 of their Awesome sides--Baked Mac n Cheese. You won't leave this establishment hungry !!
Poised as a Bywater institution we had to try an oyster po boy. The french bread decently fresh and crunchy but overall the iconic sandwich unimpressive. Presenting but morsels of tiny oysters breaded and deep fried, it was tough to discern breading from oyster. Sauce and garnish ordinary as well. Didn't get to try the rest of the menu so perhaps this was an ill representation of their wares but we were not impressed.
Great seafood neighborhood restaurant that's been operating for decades!
Amazing food! Service was great as well. We were in a group of 7 around lunch for the start a bachelor party weekend, and feel really bad about being as loud as we were, but everything was perfect!
Tried the Super Seafood Platter and it was excellent. Portions were plentiful and cooked to perfection. This is a true staple of New Orleans cuisine. A must stop...
This place has been open for years and serves some of the best seafood in New Orleans. Whether it's a JD special or a poboy, you're in for a treat. Family atmosphere, great place for celebration or just to inhale a quick lunch.
I've been eating here for over ten years. Staff is always friendly. Food is always hot a fresh. If you don't mind the ambiance, it's a pretty solid seafood place.
This was my first time at Jack Dempsey's!! The food, service, and the atmosphere was superb!!! You will not be disappointed here!! I love this place!!! I will go again!!
Food is always fresh and so delicious. Quick service and great customer service. Love this place....have been eating here over 20 years.
Awesome food! Soft shell crab and crabmeat au gratin were superb! Sangria was awesome, too. Definitely recommend coming here and I'll see you here because I will be back.
Always love going here. Has been my favorite NOLA restaurant for at least 30years. Menu has changed a little but I can always find something great. You can't make a wrong choice!
Consistently awesome food. Always good customer service! I want to try something new, but can’t help but love the stuffed fish with crab. So delicious!
Oysters were delicious! Best fried seafood in town. Staff was super friendly. Can’t wait to come back.
I wanted so much to take my husband here. I knew he would love it and he did. Great food & spirits to drink. Atmosphere casual & relaxed. One of the highlights of our vacation!
Great atmosphere! Crab balls magnificent! Crab au gratin & macaroni & cheese were awesome. Fried fish & potato salad needed a bit of seasoning.
I've been a customer of Jack Dempsey's since 2000 when I first discovered the Jack Dempsey's Seafood Platter for Two. The food is still delicious and the service still has a good ol' New Orleans' accent. I recommend this for good atmosphere, great food and friendly service "Darlin'".
Excellent food. Had the blackened redfish with crawfish remoulade.
Our if the way and definitely a local hang out. Ton of food for a great price. Best onion rings ever! Loved the softshell crabs
Jack Dempsey's is one of my favorite places to eat. It's tucked away, and really looks like a NOLA style home if you're not paying attention. They hace a bar at the front, and then you enter the dining area. I had one of the most delicious Sangrias ive tasted here. The crab dip is also very delicious. Large portion sizes, you will definitely have leftovers to enjoy at home. If you're a tourist here, this Solomon's definitely be a stop. Fresh, well seasoned seafood options. I can't say I've had anything here I've disliked!
The atmosphere here is so quiet and calm.love it. Like home sweet home.first time here and I'm already enjoying. The food is amazing and the waitress are so sweet and respectable.
Excellent sever. She took care of us. We sat n section close to kitchen entrance. My sister n law 2 saturdays ago. She had blonde haïr. Very attentive to us. I took food home for husband lov it
It's nothing fancy (this is the Bywater, not the French Quarter) but if you want a bunch of fried seafood for a decent price, you won't be disappointed. The best bet is probably the platter that comes with a whole bunch of fried catfish, fried shrimp, 2 crab balls, a little crawfish pie, and a cup of gumbo. Oh, and some toast. It's about $25 and can easily feed 2 people. The catfish is buttery in both flavor and texture. Falls right apart (but the breading stays on)! The gumbo is among the better ones we've had here (though not quite as good as it is at Coop's). Each table gets a big dispenser of tartar and remoulade sauce. In other words, all you'll need for a satisfying dining experience.
It was nice. Hadn't been in years. Food was fresh. Service was good. They didn't let us serve the birthday cake but policy is policy.
Man this place was great! Good find.
Great tasting food. My favorite is the fried red fish and oyster platter. Affordable too with a great wait staff. I will drive from the west bank here regularly just to eat here.
I had a grand time at Jack Dempsey's I'm here visiting New Orleans where I was born and raised I used to go to Jack Dempsey's when my kids was smaller it's been way over 20 years food is superb the gumbo is amazing the food was so good I had to go back a second time I just got to say Jack Dempsey's your number one
This is not a Nola destination restaurant. It is a local Neighborhood restaurant that maybe the best of its kind in Nola surpassing many others like Mandinas, Katies, Liuzza’s by the Tracks and the way overpriced Frankie and Johnny’s and way overrated Dick and Jenny’s. Had off the chart fresh Stuffed Trout with their famous Mac & Cheese for $11 dollars. Interior is pedestrian but it will be almost impossible to find a better delicious meal in Nola at these prices. Service was fast, courteous and efficient.
We come here every time we come to New Orleans and have not been disappointed.the Red fish platter is my al time favorite.
The stuffed lobster was great. Nice waitress. Very friendly. Sweet tea was good. Large beer glasses. Lots of food on each dish.
Great place for seafood and more. Good prices and food. We tried the catfish platter...well enough for 2. The staff was very polite.
Holy Moly... BEST seafood in the city & at a price that’ll make you smile. Large portions. Casual homey atmosphere. Great service. Geaux & bring guests!! Try the oysters 👍🏼 …
Went to this place to celebrate a birthday lunch. Good food. And nice ambience. Their blackened Redfish was terrific. Fries could have been better.
Nice low-key atmosphere with great big portions of really good food for a very reasonable price. One platter is definitely big enough to split.
Fantastic food and staff! They went above and beyond! Will definitely go back!
I love this restaurant. Consistently great food. Gumbo is one of my favorites and the shrimp are always perfect. I am also feeling the music playing.
Down home food good feeling place!
For good authentic nola food this place is a most. Staff very friendly and drinks are good as well.
Good food. Not fancy. Prices are decent. Service was good.
Get the mack & cheese. You WON'T regret it!
As always those crab balls are amazing. Just staff was a little slow that night. All and all the food is unique to New Orleans.
The food and service was great. Plenty of food for your money. It was two of us eating off a platter and we couldn't finish it.
I Love this place although we we're the 3rd customer there I ordered my food to go and my guest ate in the waiter brought my food out and man it was like I ordered a kiddie meal the price was the same I sat there for 2 hours and the other customer meals were stacked high like mines should have been I guess when you order to go you get less food I am very disappointed at this time..
The severs were great. Seated fast. Food is plentiful but not seasoned as I prefer.
Great experience and good food.. It's worth the money you pay for it..You love it..
Jennifer was our waiter she had a beautiful attitude and patient with us as we made our order she was very helpful with telling us and suggested to us what we should get as well as the food was piping hot and fresh as always today was my mom's birthday and this is the only place where she wanted to go I just wish that they would have sung happy birthday to her but our waiter kept asking her how's her bday dinner my mom luvs this place can't wait to go back
I have never had a bad experience. And hopefully i want the food is good and the portions are always more then enough next time i go home i will be visiting again
Food was great and the atmosphere was very cool. The staff made you feel like family. I will stop in again when I'm in town.
Reasonable but not outstanding poboy....confusing take out. Diners are eating inside, but have to wait in your car for takeout? Takes a bit more time that way, but anyhow....
The food there was delicious it's been awhile since I've been there but it was good
We'd been waiting to eat here and trust me, it was worth the wait! Everything was great, especially the Crabmeat Au Gratin and Bananas Foster Ice Cream Cake!!
Over time things change but the one thing that has remained the same is that warm welcome you receive when you walk in. The food is that good ole southern cooking. Minor problem, remodeling or redecorating is needed.
As usual the food was great..especially the Macaroni that I went there for..we went early and when we left there was a pretty good crowd. This is a New Orleans staple where you can't go wrong.
I had ordered the soft shell crab and my wife ordered the shrimp po'boy. The food was great and the people were great. The service was awesome!
Great neighborhood restaurant. Good causal atmosphere. The menu is mostly fried but the food is good and the service was excellent.
Seafood very good. Love the baked macaroni
Friendly staff, great food and BIG portions. If you want to eat and feel like a local when you visit New Orleans, Jack Dempsey's is the spot!♥️
The food and service was good. Just don't order the mac and cheese. It wasn't too tasty.
Great visit to place across from where I worked 20 years ago
Pretty great food, steak was amazing. It's a happening place and I was not expecting the crowds. Will try again.
Great place to go if you visit NOLA, way better than tourist traps down town. Very large portion sizes for the price, great people.
Classic neighborhood eatery. Southern comfort food. Good portions. Good onion rings. Lunch specials are great value.
Fried okra was the best. The fried redfish and crawfish were the best. Some of the best seafood since we been in New Orleans.
Been going here since I was little we still visit when we're in town so 40+ year and nothing has changed good food always.

The seafood platter for 2 was more like a seafood platter for 4 (the only downfall...it had more fish than anything and I was wanting more shrimp...if I had to complain)it was truly outstanding
Good hangout place if you want to go out and have a little fun on the town with friends and family
Some of the best home styled cooked food. Easy to get too while I worked right across the street back in the day.
