Reviews of Gumbo Shop

Kind service and great food! Can’t go wrong with free warm bread and butter. We did the complete creole dinner and it was nice to try a bit of everything while in the city. Would definitely order the gumbo and jambalaya again but skip on the red beans & rice and bread pudding. The rice and beans were nothing special and kind of bland. The bread pudding was too soft, it felt like eggs and much prefer a more bready texture. The vegetarian options were appreciated as there were different diets at the table. Indoor seating is tight so be prepared to be close to others. A bit pricey but still would recommend!

The most perfect little restaurant!
Our server Dreka was the sweetest, also the tall lady with the colourful braids was delightful to watch as she was so kind when serving others too.
Food was really good.
Atmosphere was lovely as well.
Was a great experience.
Starter bread was warm and great portions all around.
Absolutely loved dining here!
Thank you so much Gumbo Shop:)

I went of the great reviews I saw on Yelp and decided to give this restaurant a try. We were immediately seated though there was a wait time after we got seated. I ordered the Creole platter and my wife had the seafood gumbo cup. Both dishes were very good. The jambalaya had big chunks of chicken and sausages in it and the meal was very well flavored.my favorite was the seafood gumbo my wife ordered as it had okra and was much more flavored. I would have loved that even more over rice but since it was our last night there I didn’t get to revisit but definitely will again when I return. Our waitress Lashondra was very welcoming. I had initially placed an order for the wrong meal and she accommodated me though I wasn’t expecting it. Definitely give this place a try whenever you are in New Orleans. You won’t regret it.

The place was a bit full when we arrived but we didn’t wait much to be seated. Once seated, our waitress was extremely friendly and helped us order something very New Orleans style. I got the Hurricane drink, which was very good, and the Creole Shrimp dish, which was delicious. My husband got the okra & seafood gumbo, also great. For dessert we had the fudge brownie with ice cream that was absolutely divine! We were shocked that everything we ordered arrived super quickly. The only downside was that we got a table outside which was too close to the heater, so our foreheads were a bit hot. If you want to seat outside, just make sure not to get a table right next to the heater because it’s going to be a bit uncomfortable.

I really enjoyed the gumbo here, along with our whole party. We had the vegetarian gumbo, chicken gumbo, seafood gumbo, blackened fish, and sausage with mustard. Everything was great. The placed is kinda small, so you will be sitting close to others. Very reasonably priced! I would definitely return. Their hot sauce and spice were excellent so we bought some for home!

Overall this was the nicest restaurant in the area. Kind of a hole in the wall but very elegant also. Service was okay I think we had a newer server. She was nice but forgetful. Drinks were really good. Like really good. Food was ehhh 3.5 out of 5 lacked flavor and that spark I was expecting from New Orleans. Wasn’t very expensive so I would come back but I would order something different then my last trip.

When you think gumbo. The gumbo shop lives up to its name, the hospitality is well versed in their demeanor you will get it everywhere, but our server destiny was well informed and highly sophisticated with the history of the dish. She was very kind to let us record her explaining each dish. She was an asset to the establishment. Our experience here will forever be cherished. Thank you destiny for an amazing memorable experience 🙃🤪.

I liked the chicken/sausage gumbo much better than the seafood gumbo. I assume the sausage gives it more flavor vs the bland seafood gumbo. I kinda expected out of this world gumbo since it was recommended, however, it wasn't. It was very, very good though. My search continues for the world's best gumbo. We were forced to sit outside when the temps just dropped to 50s...my husband and I had a vaccine card but my son didn't so they made us sit outside so don't forget to bring your vaccine cards! My son had the penne pasta and he said it was pretty good.

This was probably one of the best suggestions from the hotel we stayed at. I am not much of a seafood person, so I was hesitant when I got to New Orleans.
In wanting to try a little bit of different things, we got the the Complete Creole Dinner. We chose the Chicken Andouille Gumbo, Creole Combination Platter (Shrimp Creole, Jambalaya, and Reba Beans and Rice), Creole Creamed Spinach, and the Praline Sunday.
Everything was excellent! It was flavorful and really just delicious. I wish we had time to go back there and try more, or even get the same things again.
On top of the food being delicious, the service was great and the ambiance was really nice. We would 100% recommend this place to others!
Ajay Sreedharan
The ambience was ok but then we weren't here for the ambience but for the food.
We had the Shrimp Creole and the Seafood Okra Gumbo for our main course. The Shrimp Creole was fantastic and was a delight to eat. The flavours were great.
The Seafood Gumbo was a bit of a let down though. It just lacked flavour which was something we didn't expect considering the name of the restaurant has 'Gumbo' in it.
Finally, for dessert, we had the Warm Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce. This one was again a delight. Absolutely great. I would go here again just for the dessert.

This was my first time in New Orleans and we wanted to get some gumbo. We found this place on Google and it was so amazing! Nathanael was our server and he was the best! He was always refilling our drinks and even recommend other activities we could do in the city. He recommended the specials they were having and all of the food our group got was so incredible. 100/10 service and food!
Nette Rab
I was able to walk in with no reservation. The complimentary bread was fluffy. The Chicken Andouille Gumbo was delicious. I enjoyed every bite.
The service, however, is okay. I feel like the server should at least smile. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and Crown Royal.

I came here right after I landed, and the line was so long. It probably took 45 minutes to get in and seated. I was solo dining and they didn’t have a bar area unfortunately so I had to wait for a table. I had a nice one right by the window which I enjoyed! They bring out a loaf of warm bread and butter to the table after you order. I had a cup of the chicken/andouille gumbo which was delicious! I highly recommend that to anybody! It was so rich and flavorful. I also had a cup of the jambalaya which was good but next to the gumbo seemed a little bland. The server recommended a little bit of the hot sauce on top which was great! Service was very very very slow so if you are in a rush or are starving then this probably isn’t the best option. For two small cups of food this was a 2 hour ordeal.

Welcome to Gumbo Shop!!! The waiter was amazing and funny. He gave us great recommendations to be able to try all the best food there and the food did not disappoint! The drinks were also very strong and delicious. Service was fast and the prices were completely reasonable

We went here on our first night for dinner. It’s such a great place. We sat outdoors where the heaters kept us warm.
Our server was fantastic are guided us well through the menu. The cocktail was great, and food was delicious! It came out quickly and was delicious.
You will not be disappointed if you choose to go here over any other restaurant in the area.

From walking in to being waited, seated, served and leaving, the whole entire staff was very welcoming. The service and food was great. We ordered two entrees for $35, so the prices are very reasonable. The interior decor is beautiful. If there is a wait time please wait.
Keeki
We waited about 20 minutes in line to try the Gumbo Shop.
Our server was great - he made us laugh make times with his jokes lol! I was surprised at the fast service although it was super busy.
Food was kind of average at most? Definitely not something I would wait in line to eat. If you’re visiting I would recommend the Jambalaya (not the trio try all creole).
Balakrishnan Vasudevan
Good food, great service!
Most restaurants give you a couple of small slices of bread with butter, Gumbo Shop gives you a small loaf! It is warm and it is good! The drinks are great, we tried their hurricane and their strawberry daiquiri and loved them both.
We also tried their spinach and artichoke dip, the seafood pasta, and their chicken gumbo and loved all of them.
The service is top notch, the wait staff is constantly milling around and taking good care of you!
Qhuitnei Doss
I’ll start with the gumbo, it was really good and they definitely understood that assignment. The drink was nothing but juice. I was highly dissatisfied. I got the fish with shrimp Creole and it was pretty good. I usually don’t eat tomato based sauce but I gave this a try and it wasn’t my favorite thing but it wasn’t nasty. They do not have any fried fish on the menu so don’t search for it. Lol. Overall, it was a nice atmosphere with great gumbo
Jared Winchester
The Gumbo Shop doesn't disappoint. Authentic delicious creole food served in a truly unique environment. Take a break from Bourbon street at this semi-upscale eatery. Hot bread, great food and handcrafted drinks! what more could you want? For a taste of everything go for the Creole Combo platter with crawfish.
Nevin Haines
Had an awesome time here! The service was great and everyone was very friendly. There were little birds all around in the outdoor dining area but they don't bother you at all. I ordered the seafood okra gumbo and it was very good. Definitely recommend stopping here if you're in the area! I will be back the next time I'm here.
Max Cheng (Max A. Cheng)
Excellent food. Wanted a taste of a little bit of everything so ordered a bunch of small cups and appetizers! Highly recommend doing this if you want to try everything. The blackened fish also looked SO GOOD! Didn’t get it tho, so I guess that’s for the next time I visit! There is a line but it moves fast so the wait isn’t too long! There is indoor and outdoor seating here.
Rowena McBride
Food was amazing and our server was incredibly friendly! Very nice atmosphere as well! We went at a very busy time but were lucky to still get seated without a wait! Even with how busy it was it wasn’t overly loud and my husband and I were able to have a nice, quiet conversation over dinner. The complimentary bread and butter was a nice touch since you don’t see too much of that in the area.
Tanzira Najnin
The food was good but the outdoor seating area, the wait-in-line area and the restrooms were quite dirty. Our menus were wet. There was a dead cockroach under our table. There was puddles of water here and there. The restaurant was very busy. I did not see much cleaning efforts in between when guests left.

We came here twice on our five-day trip. The first day was accidental when our food tour brought us due to a lot of their preferred restaurants being closed. We had initially planned to make a stop regardless. The food was really fantastic, so there was no hesitation in coming again on our last day. We tried both the chicken and sausage gumbo and the seafood gumbo, and I have to say we both preferred the subtlety and complexity in the seafood gumbo. The chicken and sausage gumbo was a little bit too salty for my taste and affected everything I tried afterwards.
The boudin was amazing. I highly recommend giving it a try. I did find the crawfish pasta was a little bit overcooked this possibly being my own preference.
The service was very fast both times we went, and there is a lovely little courtyard for outdoor seating as well. At the time of our visit in December 2021, they checked our vaccine cards, which I appreciate, as I did notice not all businesses were consistent there.
I would absolutely recommend the Gumbo Shop without hesitation. I'd also recommend their garlic hot sauce. I bought one to take home and sadly am nearly out.
Laura Owsley
A beautiful historic gumbo shop, would highly recommend! I was actually brought here originally on a cocktail tour to try their French 75 (it was great) but came back on my own to get Gumbo. They start you off with free bread and butter so you can't go wrong. Very reasonably priced for the area and I LOVED my gumbo. A must try!
Wendy BoriDomi
It New Years Eve there was a long line but it moved really fast. If you don't have proof of vax you have to sit in the courtyard outside. Which is fine!! The food was good. The drinks were amazing. The server was a bit lost but its ok. The desserts were superb. Pecan pie must try. I need to find a place where Gumbo is not made with okra. That slimy texture is not for me. But the taste the seasoning its really good. Super affordable place.

Never ever disappoints.... Gumbo Shop is one of the 5 best restaurants in the city for sure. The fish of any type is cooked to perfection time after time; every time. Delectable!
ling c
Stick to their namesake and you would be good, got the jambalaya that had the consistency of mushy baby food and essentially had only one piece of sausage in each scoop with not much else. Our entire meal was served before we even got our drinks and sadly our service was nonexistent
Kalil Garcia
Came in around noon on a Friday and was immediately seated. I had the cup of Chicken Gumbo and Jambalaya as the entree. I followed a recommendation I saw in other reviews to put garlic hot sauce on the jambalaya and it was delicious! I would recommend this place for sure!
Jacqui S
Oh wow what a great experience! I'd had a few recommendations to visit here and I'm so glad we did. I ordered a trio of gumbos; seafood, duck, and chicken andouille. My husband ordered the combination of shrimp creole, jambalaya, and red beans and rice. And my son ordered the chicken andouille gumbo. It came out super fast and all was incredibly delicious. All the dishes were incredibly flavorful and filling. I had a hard time deciding which gumbo was my favorite. My sun said he couldn't stop smiling it tasted so good. We had the bread pudding for dessert which was a nice scoop of bread pudding with a generous pour of whiskey sauce. You could taste the whiskey but it was a gentle accompaniment to the sweetness of the sauce. The service was excellent as well. We may have to visit here again very soon.
Alex Howe
Great location with top notch appearance inside the restaurant. Everything I ate from the bread to the bread pudding was amazing. My recommendation is to do the full creole dinner. You'll be extremely full and happy. My wife and I split that amongst the two of us and were both full. I ordered an extra dessert (pecan pie) and it was truly the best I've ever had. Our server Tim was awesome and went above and beyond to accommodate us with our 18 month old. He had us out of there in under an hour which was greatly appreciated.

Honestly I’m floored. First off, the passed the easiest shibboleth of a great restaurant. The bread test. A beautiful crunch a la the movie ratatouille. We began with some barbecue shrimp to share. It was less of a barbecue sauce, more of a pure butter and garlic sauce. It was divine. It had me so worked up I was slurping down pieces of minced garlic. Yes it was that good. We then moved onto entrees, where I got the seafood gumbo. It was flavorful, fresh, funky, and a joy to eat. I loved how i could find half a crab in my plate. I found that the rice was slightly undercooked, but I did not let that get in the way of my wonderful experience. We topped it off with some praline ice cream that coated my tongue luxuriously. It’s a classic for a reason. Please come here. 5/5 stars.

Fantastic service with supper club vibes. Shout out to our server Eby! You walk through a little alleyway to the entrance so it feels like a hidden grato. The gumbo was delicious. I felt the rice in the jambalaya was over cooked. For a place not far off Bourbon street it was overall a pretty nice experience!
Jessica Garrison
Stopped in sfter walking around Bourbon and what a pleasant experience. The drinks were fantastic and the food... THE FOOD. Every bite was an exploration in flavor. The gumbo, the combo platter, the garlic mash and don't get me started on the bread pudding. Our waiter was knowledgeable and was able to keep up with our wit and sarcasm. Would definitely visit again!
Foodie Yoshi
Amazing food, great service and staff. Nice location.
I recommend the Gumbo but also red beans and the salad were delicious.
It can be pretty crowded but they don't take reservations - it's first come, first serve.
James Wang
Quaint little shop that's unassuming from the outside but has a beautiful interior. Damien was our server and he did a wonderful job to ensure that our first meal in New Orleans was worth it.
We had the gumbo sampler (duck rouillard, chicken andouille, and seafood and okra) and the creole combination platter (crayfish etouffe, jambalaya, and the shrimp creole). All of it was delicious and a great introduction to the NOLA cuisine. We had the bbq shrimp as an appetizer, which we found to be decent, but the sauce for that was delicious.
Donnalese Desiral
My first time having gumbo and I really enjoyed it! The rice and beans with smoked sausage was DELICIOUS! I’d definitely go back again.
Ericka Ms. International Miller
Great service, welcoming atmosphere. We ordered the turtle soup, chicken & andouille sausage gumbo, and jambalaya. Everything was flavored well though the rice for the jambalaya was a bit overcooked. It would be awesome if they had a gumbo with shrimp, chicken, and sausage.
Tarun Yadav
Best dining experience for authentic New Orleans food. Loved it. Had the "Complete creole dinner" for $32. Had Seafood-Okra Gumbo followed by Creole Combo Platter. All delightful. Dessert- Praline Sundae. RECOMMEND
Paulinho “White Portuguese”
Chicken Gumbo was Fire! (phenomenal) Everyone talked about the seafood Gumbo and it was good but nothing like the flavors developed on the chicken Gumbo / wish we could have bottled it and brought it home!! The hurricane glass was hella big and it was freshly made, not just poured from a mixer! Old world charm made this stop one of kind. Definitely try a PoBoy sandwich it was fantastic!! Recommend stopping here next time for some Chicken Gumbo!!
Sresan Thevarajah
The gumbo, the shrimp creole and jambalaya were amazing. Also the breading pudding was great as well. The service was slow from our waiter.
Meenakshi Bose
I tried Chicken Sausage Gumbo at The Gumbo Shop that was recommended by one of their staff and it turned out to be delicious. Loved the balanced flavours and the meat and I highly recommend trying this place. I’m definitely coming back for a bowl of Gumbo :D
Shana Schultz
Dear lord I need to be wheeled out! The duck sausage gumbo was the most phenomenal trip to flavor town! Add to that a honeydew daiquiri! So refreshing! Fast and excellent service!! We got a cup (side) of just about everything to try!!
ଶାଶ୍ୱତ ମହାପାତ୍ର
This will be our second time at this great restaurant. The ambiance and the server were amazing. We had the best food and drink in NOLA. We will make this resists our tradition for all our next visit to New Orleans.
Vernon Peterson
The food was very delicious. Came once during a food tour. Liked it and came back for lunch the next day. I went when it wasn’t too busy which was great. Nice staff. Would definitely go again
Becca Shingler
Our server was excellent!! Our food was excellent. Our server recommended BBQ shrimp dinner. It was amazing. The Lady I was with had a vegan Gumbo bowl, she loved her food as well. Everything was very good.
Andria Hedrick
This was our first stop on a food tour and it was one of my favorites! The server was great - friendly and thought of everything we needed before we could even ask! Drinks were delicious (our server recommended the strawberry daiquiri) and I tried the corn crab bisque... It was amazing 😍 …

In all of our trips to New Orleans’ French Quarter, the Gumbo Shop is our favorite restaurant: so much so that we ate there two nights in a row on a recent trip down! My favorite dish is their amazing marinated blackened chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, while my husband loves their chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. A fantastic value with affordable prices (menu available on their website), the Gumbo Shop is a casual place with a lovely interior, soaring ceilings and fantastic service. Gluten free and dairy free options are available for those who need them. Highly recommended!
Dakota Hunter
👍 Deon provided excellent service! Highly recommend this restaurant for chicken gumbo. Very reasonable prices, nice ambiance, and interesting historic murals.
Connie Flowers
We dropped in for a quick bite. I chose the pecan pie. It was amazing! Others in my group enjoyed tempting appetizers. Our waitress was friendly and helped direct us in our choices of food and drink.
Beth Gasser
Stopped in to try the chicken gumbo specifically and ordered a side of their jambalaya. All was very good. Great service. Nice atmosphere. Busy place, which is always a great indicator. Warm bread served with food was great too. Highly recommend
Peter Teixeira
The service was excellent. The chicken gumbo had a pleasant spicy after kick. The red beans rice and sausage dish was a little too liquidy for my tastes. I'm used to dry rice dishes so was a little taken aback by it.
Melyatta Powers
Walked by this place and decided to go in. Food was delicious and was on the table at a rapid pace. I had the blackened red fish special that is topped with a crabcake and creamy shrimp sauce - 10s across the board! Nathaniel, my server, was super friendly and attentive.
Ger Loe
This was a recommendation through the hotel I stayed at in New Orleans. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was great. Everybody was enjoying themselves. I sat outside in the courtyard which had a totally different feel than being in the restaurant. If it's warm enough sit outside. The food was excellent I've never had gumbo before and the waiter suggested I have the sampler. Three different types of gumbo shrimp, andouille and vegetarian. All very good but I was more partial to the shrimp and andouille. I also had a small cup of jambalaya. It was very good. The service was a little bit slow but that is due to the fact that it gets crowded. I was there roughly about 7:30/8:00.
Leticia Mitchell
My husband and I decided to have dinner here kinda last minute. The reviews looked good and the Gumbo Shop didn’t disappoint! The food was so good, but our server Damien was the reason we had such a great experience. He was so friendly and personable with us and every table we watched him interact with. He was also extremely knowledgeable about the menu and his recommendations were spot on! He steered us in the right direction based on our preferences and made our evening wonderful. We loved the sausage and chicken gumbo, and the fish nuggets have been in my thoughts since we left!! I pray they are still on the menu when we come back.
I was so excited to eat that I forgot to take pictures until I was halfway through my meal! 🤣

Marie Antoinette would have exclaimed, "Let them Eat Gumbo," had her naive royal perspective known of this delightful little establishment in the historic French Quarter.
My freshly imported taste buds applaud this majestic river of flavor and alternative consistencies of spice and roux. A dream team of heat, rich melodies of seafood and contrasting temperatures danced their way to the warm pecan pie finale. Bravo, Gumbo Shop of NOLA. I salute you, and thank you for the gift of seasonal southern dining!
Que Nguyen
This is a quaint and charming spot in the middle of the French Quarter. Excellent food, drinks, and service! Received our drinks and food fast (in the middle of the week). Outdoor patio is quite small and cramped but absolutely beautiful.
Mike Willis
I enjoyed my red beans and rice. The waitstaff were friendly and helpful but appeared overwhelmed at times. The dining room is very cozy - tables are right next to each other. On the plus side, we had a good conversation with the table next to ours! I was a big fan of their greens - the kale and collard greens were delicious. Also on the plus side, the wait was shorter than some other places in the Quarter and not as noisy.
Bianca
VEGAN here. Only reason I’m dropping the stars is because the staff confirmed multiple times that the Bloody Mary mix was vegan with specifically no fish or anchovies. Well it wasn’t and we drank it 🤢 pretty sick later. The red beans and rice were an amazing vegan option and hopefully the gumbo I received was vegan as well, but I guess I’ll never know! Would have given the great meal 5 stars if I knew if it was completely vegan or not. Staff was super friendly though! So I’d be coming back if everything was more appropriately labeled to not have any confusion for dietary restrictions.

After eating at Sally's Seafood yesterday, this place everything I had expected and more! Husband and I both ordered a Creole Sampler where we got to pick from a selection of options for a 4 course meal, including dessert! All for only $31. I would have gladly paid the $45 to Gumbo Shop instead of Sally's. I was excited to compare Gumbo Shop's etouffee to Sally's and I was NOT disappointed! Soooo good! (Pictured)
My oldest son chose the crawfish pasta with cream sauce and it too was delicious! (Also pictured) Everything we ate was really good. The only thing I didn't enjoy was their selection of "vegetable" options. Between creamed greens I am not a fan of or mashed potatoes, I didn't even eat that course as the potatoes were a little dry and I couldn't taste the garlic at all.
The atmosphere was spot on, and wasn't so loud we could actually hold a conversation at dinner. Which is a big thing for me. The server was pleasant but perhaps a bit slow. I figured it was because of dinner rush and didn't fault him for that.
Overall, I'd give Gumbo Shop a 4.5 stars, but I didn't quite feel like this was a place I would want to return to immediately. I am a tourist, so take my review with a grain of salt.
Janet Madrigal-Duchesne
It was quite a wait to get inside, probably about 30 minutes. We also went during mardi gras season, so that's expected. We got gumbo and rice and beans. We pretty much devoured our plates, so you could say it was pretty good. The service was excellent as well.
Christopher Lew
We saw an advertisement on a public bus as rated #1 gumbo for 20 years, so obviously we went to try it! They definitely deserve that title. We were seated pretty much immediately around dinner time, and the vibe was very busy, but it seemed like everyone was having a good time! We ordered the chicken andouille gumbo and seafood gumbo, and while the latter was pretty good, the former was out of this world! That first bite was so comforting, it tasted like a warm hug, and immediately relaxed me.. I would recommend getting this gumbo as a meal. We ordered two bowls, so we could share, and I would order the chicken andouille gumbo as a meal next time I go.
Sarah Rodriguez
Great food and friendly staff. Tried many things from the menu and loved each dish. Must try the gumbo!
CHRIS SOLIZ
Dustin worked the entire patio and didn't even seem to break a sweat. I took his recommendation for the smoked salmon and it was DELICIOUS!!!! I cannot express how great our experience was.
Mateo Gebon
I found this to be a great place for a quick, but pleasant, meal. I tried the boudin sausage along with the andouille gumbo, and both were very flavorful. The boudin had great texture and flavor when paired with the Cajun mustard, and the gumbo was phenomenal. Service was quick and thorough, and the dining hall was nice and cool.
Vara
blackened fish was the best ever! the crabcake unfortunately had too many inedible shell bits in it and was too salty. other dishes were interesting to try, but might not be the best around.
Léo Panitan
Damien was our server! He recommended some specials off the menu. We went for it and did not regret any of it! The service was diligent and thorough! The food was ammmmmmaaaaazing! Be sure to try it with the hot sauce!
Mara Wash
During these Covid-19 times, not sure why the restaurant has the patrons sit so close to each other inside but otherwise than that, the food was delicious. Our server Brandon, was beyond pleasant and knowledgeable of all the items and provided us with great recommendations. I will definitely return when I visit New Orleans again!
Bethany Franklin
Awesome meal! The crawfish pasta was amazing. And our server Irnesha was extremely attentive and did a great job!
Katie Simon
My husband and I had a hankering for some traditional gumbo during our recent stay in New Orleans and after researching prior to our trip, decided to opt for the highly recommended Gumbo Shop - we were not disappointed. There was an enormous line out the door and down the street at dinner time on a Tuesday evening, but the wait was most definitely worth it.
We were seated ahead of much larger parties (I recommend a smaller party if you can as this place is insanely popular), and given the days specials by a fantastic waitress. We opted to try the chicken & duck Gumbo by the cup. I will say the duck is by far the best, with a rich flavor offset by the saltiness of the adouille sausage. My husband opted for the roast beef po boy for a main, which was exceptionally well seasoned and very moist. I opted for the more traditional crawfish etoufee which was stunning.
The atmosphere is quite loud and rambunctious but the waitstaff are knowledgeable and friendly. We would definitely return.
Chris Owens
Sunday evening and no wait. Amazing food and excellent service. Red beans and rice, jambalaya, crawfish etouffee…all fantastic. Garlic mashed potatoes and turnip greens didn’t disappoint as sides. The only problem is overeating!
Quinn Gonzalez
I got vegan gumbo and my boyfriend got barbecue shrimp. We both loved it and the waiter was friendly and super knowledgeable about vegan options. Please note the food looks better than in my photos, it is low lighting in there lol.
Thank you for offering patio seating for those who aren’t vaccinated/have a negative test. I am but my boyfriend can’t because of health issues. We would’ve sat in the patio anyways it was so gorgeous.

After a rather disheartening misadventure looking for a restaurant with seating, I remembered Gumbo Shop from an earlier trip. I'd never eaten inside, but I had take out and liked it. The food was fresh, delicious and the portions were perfect and the prices were very fair all things considered. The hospitality we received despite coming in 30 minutes before close was unmatched. Our server Brandon knew the menu inside and out and had recommendations, he was a delight. The drinks were great, I'd recommend the honeydew daiquiri, but you can't go wrong with a mint julep.
Tracey K
Outstanding!!! Delicious food. Best chicken gumbo I have ever had. Dinner was great. Service was friendly, fast, and "fun". Highly recommend.
Zackary Conte
The food was very unique to the New Orleans culture offering a lot menu options. I got the Jambalaya and Seafood Okro Gumbo and the food was so flavorful and filling. The Waitors were very helpful, and the environment was very classy.
Felicia
Great food and friendly staff. The service is quick and the food is delicious too. We ordered the trio gumbo and jambalaya. Both are delicious and the gumbo is definitely a must try. They served you warm bread with butter at the start of the meal too.
Shemika Sanford
Gumbo house was great. I got the Creole Platter to sample multiple dishes. And the gumbo was delicious
Callie Phelps
Yum! We really enjoyed our meal at the Gumbo Shop. It felt a little weird that the prices were so reasonable and it didn't feel really nice inside (in fact it felt a little dingy), but the staff was dressed in tuxedo shirts and bow ties. The service is why I knocked off a star; maybe if they were allowed to dress more comfortably then they may be more attentive? Hah. We waited for a good 15 minutes after being seated for someone to approach us and drinks took quite some time. The entrees came out really quickly. And the food was *chefs kiss* not over the top fancy, just really delicious and filling.
Paul Rane
Does what it says on the tin. Sells Gumbo and local cuisine. Food is hearty and authentic. A bit pricey for everything but Gumbo. Very very busy and tables are packed in so not much space.
Mike Henderson
Casual but good food, very good service, great for a quick bite at dinnertime with no reservations. The combo creole/etouffee/gumbo was phenomenal, each distinct in flavor and texture. The crawfish Cajun pasta in bacon creme sauce was good, but not very distinctive or flavorful. Bread pudding was warm and creamy, but the addition of pineapple was... not my thing. Fun tropical themed cocktails, very tasty and dangerous hurricanes. Overall a good experience and would happily go back, but stick to the gumbos and etouffee. Service was super quick and attentive.
DesRae Joubran
Great food! I don’t think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. I had BBQ Shrimp and a Funky Monkey.
Traveling Goose
The food was absolutely delicious!!! They were taking good precautions against Covid, had us seated pretty quickly, and were overall so quick and friendly. I highly recommend the crawfish etouffee or the seafood okra gumbo! My personal favorites at least!
Beth Schultz
They have amazing hot cider. I ordered “to go” not my favorite gumbo in NO- I’d go back and try something else. The place has character
Brigitte Hautzinger
I had the mint julep and the crawfish etoufee, my friend had the red beans and rice. The service was excellent, our server gave great recommendations since we were both visiting New Orleans for the first time.
Jae Costlow
The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu they provided. The tuna was delicious, and I don’t enjoy fish personally. The jambalaya was amazing, and I would 100% eat here again and try something new.
Oscar Enrique Phelps
For having the name Gumbo in the name it was not my favorite Gumbo in Nola. Service was amazing. Creole food Cajun

Post ida visit to NOLA was full of anticipation ..Obviously covid added more to that .
Safety protocols: 100%
Food : 100%
Service : 100%
We arrived here for lunch on a Tuesday with couple of kids and a picky eater .
We ordered drinks , seafood okra gumbo , creole combo platter , blackened fish poboy and red bean n rice .
We absolutely loved the gumbo and the jambalaya was epic too . The food tasted fresh and delicious even to our picky eaters .
They require vaccination proof and adhere to the mask rule . If you looking to safely enjoy the delicacies of New Orleans ;this place is definitely a must try .
Ben “Benny bass” C
This was the best place!!! Everything was perfect besides the bustle and wait. Delicate cuisine and the old feeling of the building bis spectacular and far out man!! 5/5!! will return love this block too really poppin at night great place to be. this place had the best gator sausage ive ever had!
Teisha Warner
Got the spinach artichoke dip, crayfish ettifay, and red beans and rice. Also got a mint julep and strawberry daqiri. Service good, wait line wasn't to bad, food was OK.
Corcegadi
Excellent option to taste the original New Orleans cuisine!!! We tried jambalaya, gumbo, chicken PO-boy and shrimp PO-Boy!!!! Everything was amazing!!!! Reasonable prices. If you are planing to come to New Orleans this is a good place to lunch or dinner
Jeff
Loved the open air option to eat. Service was prompt and friendly, offering suggestions without being pushy. Food was really good. My wife especially liked the Gumbo and the fresh fish Florentine.
First time we had to wait for about 15-20 minutes because we got there around 7pm. The second time we ate there, we arrived earlier when it was a little less busy, around 4:30pm.
Overall, a great experience.
Becky Clark
Stopped in unexpectedly and ended up having a lovely lunch. We did not need reservations and it wasn’t too crowded. The cocktails were fantastic and not overly sweet. The crawfish étouffée was delicious, but was expensive as a side. They had a vegetarian option of spiced beans and rice that the vegetarian of the group enjoyed. We also had a po boy that was untraditional. The bread was hollowed out and filled with more of a shrimp stew. It was messy and yummy. Service was okay. He forgot our drinks at one point. I would come back for sure!
O “Mr. Review You” Cally
Love their chowder and I've never had a server that was a disappointment so when eating some place I highly will recommend this place because you're in a comfortable environment and plus the food is pretty awesome and be aware no one makes gumbo the same so every single gumbo you eat should be unique
Abir Ghosh
This place is very popular and almost always packed. Luckily for us, we got our table right away but the service was a bit slow (initial greeting part). Once we ordered our food, everything was served pretty quickly. The drink (Hurricane) was OK, nothing fancy or extraordinary. The food however was much better. The Bread Pudding was really good! Please judge it by how it looks ;). Also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream with it, worth it!
Mike B
Fantastic gumbo! I've always wanted to try authentic gumbo, but as someone who does not eat seafood, my options have been nonexistent up to now. So happy to find a place that has chicken gumbo. It tasted so flavorful, really going to miss not being able to have this back home. Wife got the blackened chicken and loved it. We enjoyed our bread pudding and hot fudge brownie for dessert too. Service was excellent, very friendly. Will definitely be back next time we are in town!
Jeff Chen
Stopped in here to satisfy my gumbo and poboy cravings. Both were excellent. I was surprised by how amazing the wait staff was here too. Very polite and accommodating. I was at commander's palace the day before and didn't get as good service as here. Jamal is the man. Would highly recommend.
M Louise Foss
Delicious. Bbq shrimp pasta was portioned perfectly and was just the right level of spice. Three tuna steak special with a crab cake and corn maque choux was superb. Try the specials!!
L&I General
An amazing culinary experience. Their Creole dinner is all you can ask if you are planning to try all New Orleans traditional dishes. If you don't feel for a complete dinner their specials are also great, my wife's salmon was out of this world. The service is also outstanding, quick and professional was proposing what to try and what was less good. All family love here.
Pat Hernandez-Byers
Cup of soup was okay, needed more flavor. Waitress was very nice. Have to have Covid shot record tosit inside.
Bobby Flores
On our way from the airport, our cab driver recommended the Gumbo Shop. We saw it and headed in because why not?
Holy hell I have missed New Orleans food, this food was amazing. So you might notice that there's a few "duplicate" pictures from me - we went here twice in a 4 day timespan. I'm just going to list out the things we had.
I doubt anybody is coming here for these things -
Corn and crab bisque: this was decent.
Mashed potatoes: pretty smooth? They're potatoes.
Creole creamed spinach: I... I skipped this. I was focused on the other food.
You should definitely come here for these things -
Chicken Andouille Gumbo: Perfectly cooked rice, vegetables and meat where the flavors were not overwhelming each other.
Crawfish Étouffée: we have a crawfish festival here in Texas and I hate it because the little buggers have a horrendous smell, but they didn't here. Everything was cleaned up nice and pretty - there was a ton of meat (crawfish), the vegetables were fresh, it tasted so good.
Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce: warmed up perfectly, it was a great end to an amazing meal.
Service was great each time. Thanks y'all for being the best food we had in New Orleans.
Kate Carnes
I cannot express how amazing the food and service is here. Do not be dismayed by the line at the door. It moves quickly and is well worth it. Beautiful place and wonderful people. Thank for making our experience here unforgettable.
Darren Baker
Great service. The food was okay and one of the dishes did not come out hot. Near Bourbon Street which is convenient. They do require you show VAX cards. The alligator sausage was very good.
shloka shetty
Get the blackened fish poboy... The fresh fruit daiquiri and nothing else. The Poboy was stuffed with the most delicate fish which was packed with flavour. It was a super simple Poboy that allowed all the individual components to sing. I ordered the honeydew daiquiri and it tasted super fresh... Not too sweet... Just perfect.
Tried the gumbo and creole combination platter as well... And they were below average. Not much going for them in terms of flavour. Also had a mint julep which didn't hold a candle to the daiquiri but was a decently potent drink. And the bread pudding is just toooo sweet... It'll make your teeth ache. Avoid.
Gideon Oyekanmi
I enjoyed the chicken andouille gumbo, my poor girlfriend got the crawfish etoufee and hated it. I mean I guess that’s what she gets for getting etoufee at GUMBO house but what do I know? Daiquiris were not it
Lisa E McKim
Impeccable service, excellent food. I had the Creole Shrimp and my friend had the Chicken & Andouille Gumbo. The Gumbo was out of this world. Spicy, seasoned perfectly and hearty. My shrimp dish was equally as delicious. We ate indoors but next time I intend to try the lovely outdoor courtyard. Kenneth was an outstanding server!
Roberta Nicole
JQ is the beat waitress I've experienced in a long time. She is awesome and give her a raise. She was attentive, I recommend asking to sit at her table section.
Now to the food. The crawfish pasta is missing salt and seasoning, if u order add the gumbo pepper seasoning thats on the table to to add flavour to the dish. The chicken gumbo was a hit from what my friend said. The seafood gumbo was a miss, not authentic flavors. The chicken Espagnole was really good and the crawfish etouffe was good but missing a starch like rice or something to eat with. This is a tourist attraction that waters down authentic lousinans cuisine. Proceed with caution. In the pics are the crawfiah pasta and the chicken Espagnole. Our to go order was missing the gumbo from the complete course dinner meal as well, we only got the side spinach, crawfish etouffe by itself, no rice to eat it with, the bread pudding for the dessert, but the chicken gumbo appetizer was missing. We did not notice until we got home.
Matthew Sutton
Shrimp Creole was very authentic and delicious. Fast service, polite, was greeted by the employees while entering and also when leaving. Definitely a real taste of Louisiana
Camilo Romero
It's a good place for lunch, there was a line but it moved fairly fast. The food didn't take too long to come out. The gumbo was good tho I did add some of the hot sauce and it got better. The jambalaya was served with two scoops. Food is priced well for the serving and quality.
Sarah Brooks
The gumbo and jambalaya are among the best I've ever had. The fresh fruit daquiris are top notch as well. I'll definitely bring my friends here!
Ms. Adela
We went mid day and it was a great experience! We got sat right away and the service and food was amazing. Def. recommend for some great reasonably priced food. I had the creole platter and my fiancé had the special catfish with crab cake. The chicken gumbo was also very yummy 😋 …
Deonca Jeffers
The food was pretty good the only problem is some of the food that came out was cold.
Mason Hataway
Damien should be the manager! Best service I’ve experienced in any restaurant setting by far. Knowledgeable of the menu, made wonderful recommendations, and has the perfect attitude for any guest. Absolutely a 5+ star experience, even though he had multiple tables we felt like the only guests in the place. Please take good care of him, he’s a one of a kind server. He’s an absolute ace at what he does. Also, the food and atmosphere were impeccable. The redfish topped with crab cakes and shrimp sauce is 11/10. Fantastic place, highly recommend! Less than $65 for 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and an appetizer.
Fiz-osaurus Rex
Excellent service. Food tasted amazing. Who ever they got cooking in the kitchen is doing Gods work.
Jennifer Morehead
The food was amazing but waiter got my order wrong so while everybody else was eating I was watching. After ten minutes of waiting for my order they brought out a sample of gumbo. Still one of my favorite restraints. Their chicken gumbo and seafood gumbo so so good! The catfish with shrimp etouffee so so good! My husband loves the blackened chicken. You can't go wrong with anything that you order. Also, the fresh fruit daiquiri are delicious; try the honeydew.
Sonia Rueda
We were so glad we came to eat, the food was spot on, hence the 5 stars. However our server was not. We had the blackened fish nuggets. My husband had the creole combination platter, I had the chicken gumbo and we shared the bread pudding. Every dish was delicious! Unfortunately we were disappointed with our server Darlene. It was our 1st in NOLA and in this restaurant. She was not pleasant, I would say she was rather dry. She didn't mention any specials of the day. And gave us the check without offering dessert or coffee. We had to tell her we wanted to see the dessert menu. It was early in the day so there wasn't a need to rush. All the other servers were pleasant and attentive to their respective customers. We will go back however will make sure to mention this experience and ask that she not serve us if she is there.
Jason Honeycutt
My two adult sons and I came to New Orleans from Washington State for a boys weekend. We happened upon The Gumbo Shop at about 8:00pm on August 26, 2022 while out looking for a place to have our first dinner in town. We were not disappointed. Our waiter was Damian, hope I spelled that right. Damian, was so friendly and welcoming, he made suggestions that were not found on the menu and we were so grateful. The food was outstanding and the customer service was such a treat. We would recommend The Gumbo Shop to anyone looking for a very nice place to eat. Thank you Damian for giving the best first impression of your fine city.
john benes
Love this little gem of a place. Always have to stop here when I'm in New Orleans. Steeped in architecture and history. Great food and amazing service
Ian Visser
Got the creole platter and upgraded my red beans to the etoufee. Possibly the best meal I had in the week that I spent in the quarter, every bite was just so incredibly delicious. Service was great as well. I can't remember the servers name unfortunately but he had a very busy section and was still on top of our needs and answering all of our questions. Stop reading reviews and just go already, you won't regret it.
Ethan B
Absolutely amazing I only wish I had a bigger stomach. Our server Ambreal was phenomenal.
T. Kush
Great, authentic food, AMAZING service!! We were going to a show at preservation hall and stopped before hand for dinner. The red beans and rice were the best I’ve had in NOLA so far. Our waiter simply amazing. Thank you for an awesome dining experience!!
Kyrie Sauve
Every time we have tried to eat here, the line was too long. We lucked upon a quiet Sunday evening and were finally able to visit.
We had an alligator sausage appetizer, chicken andouille gumbo, sausage with red beans and rice, and jambalaya. It was all fabulous but the gumbo was over the top delicious.
The prices were surprisingly reasonable! Dinner for four, including an appetizer, 2 beers, a glass of wine and one cocktail, was about $130 including 20%+ tip.
The service was top-notch. Can't wait to visit again!
K
Food was great! I got chicken andouille gumbo. Wasn’t expecting much but it was surprisingly VERY good. My friend got jambalaya and she was very impressed. Wait staff were so friendly, almost like a homely feeling. The back courtyard is very charming and quaint. I would recommend all of my friends and family to make this a stop when in NOLA. Parking may be an issue, but it’s expected. Just plan accordingly.
Grace Chen
Nice experience. Very beautiful dinning environment. I love gumbos but I prefer crawfish etouffee here than gumbo. Seems like that the waiters are more welcoming to larger group of people. My friend and I dined in during Memorial weekend so they were very busy. In general, it’s a good restaurant with culture. Worth trying it.
Cabi Style with Leza
Very busy. I heard a local joint but saw tourists too. Entrees are very good but tapas like portions. So my 2 rice pieces were $17 just a heads up.
I would recommend the pasta in white sauce or the black beans and rice. Jambalaya was okay.
Mint julep was very sweet. Beer was great! Atmosphere was definitely New Orleans style.
Would stop by again just change of what I got.
Bread pudding is the BEST!
Miron Ignacio
Best gumbo I ever had. Also the Poboy is to die for. The poboy is cooked in a "wet" saucy manner it's so tasty. Definitely great Luisiana cuisine.
Anthony Archer
The waiter was really friendly and the service was quick. A genuine creole experience. My wife had gumbo and really enjoyed it. We tried some alligator sausage with a weird, but very tasty fish sauce. I had the red beans and sausage which was very nice.
A really good cajun dinner.
Johan Böhlin
Went here for the vegan Gumbo, which was OK. Not too exciting, but maybe I was expecting too much. Service was quite slow for both initial contact, food and bill payment.
Bread was a tad dry.
Katherine Stack
Get the cantaloupe daquiri! It was the most refreshing and delicious drink. Service was amazing, Tim was kind and helpful with guiding me to check some other places while on vacation. Food was delightful and came out fast.
Amber Nissen
This place is amazing. The food is so good, it hit the spot. The bread pudding is the best thing I've ever had in my life. I highly recommend this place.
Vanessa S.
Great dinner at the Gumbo Shop!
When we visited New Orleans Gumbo is a must-try. And since I am vegetarian I did some research and found out that this place offers a vegan option of the famous Gumbo.
We had to wait some time outside of the restaurant to get seated but when we sat down inside everything went super fast. Fresh and warm bread with butter was put on the table, food and drinks came instantly.
Our appetizer came after the entrees but that wasn’t a problem. Both gumbos were great and I am glad we tried it! Very down-to-earth food which we love.
Fred Mac
Had the chicken gumbo and it was fantastic flavorful great service as well this is what that southern hospitality is all bout
Munkeypoo626
Wow! So good! There was a very quick wait time. We were told 15 to 20 minutes and it was barely 5 minutes before we were seated. We ordered the jambalaya and the chicken po boy. Everything was delicious and quick. I'm not sure what our servers name was, but she was extremely friendly and funny. She took extremely good care of us and the rest of her area.
Highly recommend!
Bo Bo
Some of the best gumbo I've had and the corn chowder was just as good. Enjoyed a bit of gator sausage along the way. Cozy courtyard made it even more enjoyable, and the friendly staff completed a perfect lunch.
Remi Paluszak
To me, a weird policy: you cannot go in if your party is not present, but, whatever, we waited. Once in the place was back to back full, just shy of too tight to stretch out. Yet, food arrived quickly.
I have no pictures but we had an assortment of the typical Southern fare and at least from a photography standpoint, it's just not that pretty. The flavors, however, were good, not too heavy, and at a decent price point.
I wouldn't come back for seconds but only because once was enough of Gumbo and. co.
Char I
Our server was amazing!! She was the super nice red head I believe her name was Jena. She told us all the specials and when our delicious food came she explained what each one was, reccomend that we take a bite out each first to try it and then add some hot sauce and the seasoning on the table. Perfect recommendations!! We got the trio of red beans and rice, jambalaya, and shrimp creole. Let me tell you that red beans and rice was the best I ever had. It needed no hot sauce or nothing ontop. The seasonings used to cook those beans and the spices were perfect. Tasted like someone's grandma was in the kitchen cooking those beans for hours. They also give you a huge loaf of bread to dip in all the food. I also got a nice local beer I believe it was New Orleans light. It was perfect. Great to cool me down on a humid day. The building was really nice. You can sit inside but they have this really cute courtyard with seating and then at the back is another small room with patio doors opened up to the courtyard. It was perfect sitting in that back room because it was nice and quiet and we had the area to ourselves and they had AC. So if you can try to request that spot because I'm so happy that the host suggested that area. Definitely a great affordable restaurant with great service in French Quarter.
Ms. D
From the moment you walk in you are greeted and made to feel welcomed. I had the pleasure of having Nathaniel as my server. He is extremely knowledgeable about the menu. I went with his suggestions on almost everything except for the drinks only because I don't like certain things that were in them but I'm sure they tasted amazing. He was very patient and the service was fast. Everything tasted amazing, and I was not disappointed. You must try the house hot sauce on your food as well. The BBQ shrimp were out of this world. The sauce was too good not to dip the bread in it. The seafood gumbo had a nice portion of meat in it even for a cup. The crawfish pasta was seasoned and there was crawfish tails throughout. I would definitely try the food first as is before putting the hot sauce on it just in case it's fine as is for you. I enjoy spicy food so that was enjoyable for me. The St. Peter's Punch was tasty and was enough to get you started to where you were going. I ordered a different drink and it definitely put me in a happy place 😌. After walking around the French Quarter for 20-30 minutes it ended so if you want to keep the party going, you may have to bar hop. After I finished my main food, I asked Nathaniel for the dessert menu and instead of him bringing me a menu, I appreciated that it was drilled in his head already. I ordered the brownie sundae and added the pecan praline sauce on the side. I had everything separated because of sharing it with picky eaters but it was amazing!!!
The only thing that I would take a half star off from is the restroom. Maybe of it was checked every 30 minutes to an hour or so to make sure it was clean that would help make a difference. I know it probably gets busy and at times it might not be feasible but it needed some tlc from guests doing whatever and not cleaning up behind themselves.
Overall it was a great experience and I loved it from start to finish. I even got tips on how to catch the trolley. I will definitely be back.
Gumbie Island Vibes
The came in a timely manner an was hot an good. Now I'm allergic to shell food but they had a chicken Gumbo which comes with a fresh hot roll. My desert was good. Bread pudding 😋.
Will Hall
This place is really cool. We sat outside and loved the courtyard where our table was. The service wasn't great. We barely saw our waiter. Also, the food honestly was just average. There are definitely better places to grab a bite around New Orleans.
Jasonn Denard
The Gumbo Shop offers a variety of options, not just gumbo. The Gumbo however, is pretty darn good. In a city with many gumbo options, the Gumbo Shop does offer a pretty good bowl, whether you want seafood or chicken and sausage.
JUSTCALLME TARA
I enjoyed the food and the service very much. They give the best to go bags, even though I had nothing to go I asked for a bag 😆. I had the Alligator sausage 😋, gumbo and a lovely drink after pretty much eating all day. 😋 bread pudding was amazing! …
Amber Gunter
We went here on a food tour. Had 3 different gumbo's and a Jambalaya. I tried duck gumbo for the first time and I loved it! Service was great and the historical building was very interesting. We would have came back but ran out of time in New Orleans
Mahesh Kalambi
The food was still very good. We had crawfish etouffee, shrimp creole, alligator sausage and southern pecan pie.
The food was great. Our server, Tim, did a great job of explaining and suggesting the options we could order so we could get the best of all their food offerings. Everything was great from the warm french bread and butter, shrimp creole, gumbo, Po boy, jambalaya to the bread pudding with whiskey sauce and chocolate brownie pie. Will come back again!
Steve Walton
We ate there last night in New Orleans. The food was great. I had the blackened fish po boy it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever ate and the Gumbo was the best 👌 so if you come to New Orleans you need to eat there. Price was good to for the food.
Fatih Erkan Caba
Ok, let me start by thanking the awesome waiter Brendon, he was awesome and fast. The long Island was so strong i love it. For the food we had the dining experience i totally recommend. The food is pretty good, We had the dinner experience and crocodile sausage which was surprisingly good as well. When we visit restaurant there was a table for us but when we left there was a long waiting like outside, so i would say make a reservation if you are going in rush hours. Everything was enjoyable, partly because our waiter Brendon was very good too. Totally recommended :) ps: for dessert the brownie is perfect
Cristian Diaz
Made this place one of our stops while in our wkend vacation. Food was all delicious and the waiter Damion was awesome. We had so much to eat all was done just perfect. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Must come here
David CHUNG
Entrance is an alleyway and can easily be missed. Main dining room very crowd but their is patio seating out back. Server was robotic but efficient. Food portions are small. Had the combo dinner. Crawfish Etouffe came out warm, not hot. Needed to add additional seasoning at table to jazz it up. Nothing wow about it. Second entree was the blackened catfish. That’s was done right! Came out hot and cooked perfectly. Well seasoned.
I guess as tourists, we’re paying for the experience not so much value and high quality.
Sravan Janamanchi
Food was good. We were in the line on a Saturday night during the long weekend and when I asked waiter who was asking how many parties, we told him and asked if we can make it by time they close and his reaction was to take his phone out look at the time and look at me in a weird way like he was trying to be funny!? If he was, that was a very bad performance. Finally got seated and didn’t understand a word the waiter was saying, like I asked him to repeat the menu he suggested on what to order but still didn’t understand a bit and finally he got the food and it was delicious but again, asked what’s what and he explained so fast I didn’t get it so we just enjoyed the food and left not quite knowing what it is but kinda figured out by going through menu a few times.
Pama Brown
Everything was good although had better crayfish ettouffee elsewhere. The gator sausage had good flavor but seemed slightly over cooked. The chicken and andoulle sausage excellent. Waiter was spot on. Tables a bit too close together. Good cocktails.
Ree
We've never had gumbo or jambalaya so this was an experience. We got the trio of chicken, seafood, and turkey gumbo and a jambalaya. We also got a side of crayfish étouffée. Drinks are hurricane and funky monkey. Mmmmmm... yes! All was delicious. We like the chicken gumbo much better than the rest and loved the crayfish dish. Side note on the bread - delicious! Soft and warm. The drinks were strong and tasty. We are wanting to come back tomorrow for the shrimp BBQ special.
Gary Anderson
Great place,
loved the garlic hot so much I bought 3 bottle's .
The gumbo was good.
Melissa Duplechin
There was a line to get in but it went very quickly. Our service was amazing and Damien suggested meals that were delicious. I had the vegan gumbo and a vegetarian poboy. The poboy was so flavorful. The food arrived fast and hot. Definitely a place to visit to try local flavors. Prices are very reasonable as well.
Sean Morris
The place was clearly busy on a Saturday night so we knew to expect slower service and we ordered faster food (gumbo, and etouffee). Despite this our food took 45 minutes to come out. Even that would have been forgivable if it weren't for the fact that we were in the most terrible chairs at a kids table they forced into a spot directly in front of the servers station in a doorway. I literally had to move every time a server wanted to fill drinks. Even all of this was still just the cost of admission nearish to Bourbon Street on a weekend and we would have forgotten all about it if the food was able to overcome but it was just bland at best and still the price of a better meal at a better place. The one bright spot was the bread but as much as we wanted to save it for our food the long wait caused us to eat it early. There are other places to get better food, better service, and better atmosphere, avoid Gumbo Shop.
Maya Kommineni
Great experience!
Stopped by after reading the reviews and wanting something causual without reservations.
PROS: welcomed nicely, short wait, nice menu with 2 veggies options for dinner. I got the cabbage gumbo with rice and it was lovely.
CONS: poor choices for kids, just "butter" pasta without red sausce, no french friends/etc. Wish they added a few options for kiddos.
Ghost Shadow
Hugely disappointed with the Seafood Gumbo and Jambalaya. The Gumbo I tried in Anchorage was much better. The shrimp here was small and didn't have oysters.
Servicer (Quinn?) was good. The guy seating us was aloof.
Travis Erwin
We got caught in a rainy deluge and ducked in here dripping and soggy. Mark, the maitre'de went above and beyond to bring us towels to to dry off with and plastic bags to replace our paper bags ravaged by the storm. That alone is worth five stars but then our waiter was excellent and so was the food. We are simple as we were not even truly hungry but merely seeking refuge. Still the Roast Beef Po Boy was EXCELLENT. Such tender and flavorful meat. I will be back to this wonderful establishment!
Jaslyn Thigpen
First time in New Orleans and my first stop for authentic gumbo was Gumbo Shop and they came swingin!! I was so pleased with my meal and service my first time that I came back the next day. Of course food and service was excellent a second time around! I couldn’t leave without purchasing the house garlic hot sauce and creole seasoning. Will definitely be my go to spot whenever visiting the city.
Kevin B. Leigh
Wonderful experience, so much so we went back twice in the same week.
One suggestion is try the combination menu if you haven’t had New Orleans food before. It’s a great way to get a sampling of what you might like.
The most impressive thing about the place was how kind the waiters were. Explaining everything and teaching us about the culture.
Earl Buck
Have eaten here 3 times already and enjoyed each time. Service exceptional. Red beans and rice w/ spiced sausage delicious. Vegan dinners also available. Gumbo awesome.
Elina Karjalainen
The food came out almost immediately after ordering, it was good but lukewarm and not hot. Portion size was on the smaller side. The table had previous food crumbs, the waitress spilled our gumbo and the splash was left on the table while we finished our drinks and paid... overall meh service though friendly.
Peter Jelinek
Gumbo my wife had was excellent. My combo plate was just ok. Not real hot when it arrived. Like jt was scooped out of a pan. Dessert was just ice cream with syrup. Atmosphere is really loud. Main reason for 3 star rating.
Samuel Kent
Tight seating. Great food. Unbeatable recommendations from our server. Tried the réveillon dinner and was exceptionally pleased. Enjoyed it "to the max", just like our waiter, Brandon, said we should.
Susan Brezina
We almost missed this place and are soo glad we wandered in! Everything was delicious! Great strawberry daiquiris, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside bread, great crab cakes - loved the sauce, chicken gumbo was delish and my husband was eating my barbecue shrimp in linguine noodles! I think my favorite is the alligator sausage. I’m so-so about sausage except for my husband’s recipe for deer sausage but I have a new favorite! This place is on my must visit list in New Orleans!
Adrien S
Love this place for lunch!!! Tasty fish salad and the crawfish etoufee was delicious. Our server was very friendly and she brought our drinks to us quickly. Would definitely recommend and will return for future visits to NOLA.

Seafood gumbo is soooo good. The price is so reasonable in a tourist zone. Highly recommend

The food was good. The seating is tight, but it's still nice. Took about 23 mins from order to receive, so it wasn't that bad. Had the shrimp poboy (it's the gumbo shop, the it's a shrimp gumbo inside bread), and it was delicious!!!
winslow pakeman
Angels are in this kitchen. The food was amazing. The service was fantastic as well. I felt it was one of the best choices I had made in New Orleans.
Christine M
Classic NOLA! You need gumbo, etouffee, jambalaya and boudin in your life! And if Kevin is your server it'll be even better!! Years later and needed to provide an update! Still, one of our favorite places! Our server Harley knew just how to celebrate our daughter's graduation!
Timothy Potter
Great food at an affordable price! We had the shrimp gumbo, red beans and rice, and the grilled fish. The food here on vacation in New Orleans at this location was the best tasting on a four day trip from California. The Gumbo Shop even had a coupon for a free cocktail of your choice for a one entree purchase. Our server recommended the Hurricane. It clearly did the job in getting my wife to walk the distance back to the car. That was just one drink! The ambience and welcoming atmosphere was outstanding. For all that great food, it was less than 25 bucks and it fed both of us. You will not be disappointed. The taste of creole style food was the best we have ever had!
H. SCOTT Fx
It was recommended to us for the jambalaya however it tasted more like a sidedish here. The Gumbo too strong taste of pea which overwhelmed it. The blackened fish looked good but didn't try it
Emily Grossheider
We tried both the soup of the day and special grilled shrimp (and of course some Gumbo) and they were incredible-our server made great suggestions and was super attentive. Seating is packed in, so be prepared to be friendly with neighbors!

We come here every time We are in NOLA. IT IS SO YUMMY & The staff is the best. We had Thanksgiving breakfast here w/ the crab cakes & sauce, small bowl of gumbo & turkey stuffing mashed potatoes gravy turnip greens cranberries sweet potato pie and bread pudding ... all the fixings!!!It was so 😋 delicious! Lashondra gets five stars 🤩 for her knowledge of the menu recommendations professionalism & kindness. Thanks Lashondra for giving up your day to serve us one of the most wonderful meals.🤗
Nick White
The creole food is amazing. Flavor in every bite. I heard their long time chef Ms. Jackie had been there for over 30 years. Cheers to the chef! She deserves a raise!
Titciana Barros
Heard the gumbo was the best and we ordered the seafood gumbo but unfortunately the bowl and soup was ale
Frank Magowan
We were referred here by a local. He said that even though the line usually looks long, it moves surprisingly quick. I literally thought it wasn't even a sit down restaurant, but it is. The food here is a slice of heaven! We tried so many things and loved them all! Gator sausage, crawfish ettouffe, boudin, jambalaya, gumbo, bread pudding etc. The friendliness of the staff is over the top and creates a great atmosphere!
Yuwi
Okay food, tourist-trap kind of spot, but solid service. We had a broad selection of gumbos and a sampler of shrimp etouffee, jambalaya, baked shrimp, red beans & rice. Baked shrimp was the best of them all. The rest was mediocre; the crawfish and shrimp weren’t very fresh. The waitstaff was kind, attentive, and fun though, and make the experience nice. Inner courtyard was nice and breezy.
Heather Higgins
I very much enjoyed my cup of seafood gumbo and sangria. I stopped in for a quick, light lunch, simply because it was called the Gumbo Shop. Service was great and my seafood gumbo didn't disappoint. If only, I had been really hungry, I could have ordered more food. Next time!
Cassandra Ryder
The staff is super nice, and I highly suggest dining in the courtyard! Even when it's chilly out they have heaters that make it feel nice and cozy. The seafood gumbo is good!
Kate Carbone
Just fine. My husband got the trio and liked it and I got the jambalaya and it’s definitely more on the tomato side which isn’t my favorite. The greens were not very flavorful at all though.
Ruth Rivas
This was probably one of the best suggestions from the hotel we are at. We went for dinner yesterday. I got the jambalaya, my husband got 3 different types of gumbo (chicken and andouille sausage, corn chowder and the seafood ) and for appetizers we got the bbq shrimp. Everything was excellent! It was flavorful and really just delicious. We came back today for lunch and had the po’ boys have sandwich. I got the blackness fish and my husband got the roast beef one. Also, We had peach and strawberry daiquiris. On top of the food being delicious, the service was great and the ambiance was really nice. We would 100% recommend this cozy restaurant.
Kaitlyn Setter
Great creole food with an equally great atmosphere and service. They have a beautiful dining area but we were sat in a back room past the patio that we loved b/c we had a big group and it gave us more privacy. Poboys were delicious as was the crawfish etouffe. Place has an upscale vibe with reasonable prices. Would recommend for a meal.
Don Sien
We always have at least one meal here everytime we visit NOLA and we're glad we did today. There was no wait at 2:30. Our server, damien, was very friendly & attentive and the food was always delicious.
I had the special Catfish St Peter...requested grilled but it was blackened but still very good & corn maque choux. She opted for the Creole Dinner and she chosed seafood gumbo, crawfish etoufee, corn maque choux & bread pudding. She also had a frozen strawberry daiquiri. Good portions & very tasty!
Tom Mullins
Great hidden spot to feel the pulse of the Quarter. Our party of 19 had a room at the back in the old pantry. Food and people were fabulous and the price was right.
Great place.
blu Gutierrez
The BBQ shrimp was delicious. However, the seafood gumbo was okay. I think it's because it wasn't warm enough. The service was great.
Katherine Yan
Great place for gumbo and other traditional creole dishes! The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Since we came at an off time, we were immediately seated inside the restaurant. The waiter was attentive and got our food out just minutes after we ordered.
The food itself was delicious and seemed authentic in flavor. However, I don’t feel as if it was the best jambalaya or gumbo I’ve ever had. Definitely still great food and will be back for more!
PETER N
Great food....the seafood okro gumbo is a go!!!😋
Norm Leonard
5 stars! I've eaten here more times than I can remember, and I've never been disappointed. The food ranges from good to excellent, depending on the night and the size of your party - usually on the excellent end of the scale.
The Gumbo Shop is a little bit (OK, a lot) like a tourist trap, but it's the sort of thing you're looking for. You won't mind, really, and you might even like it.
The bar is good. I usually drink Scotch, but I've enjoyed many bloody Marys and daquiris here, too. My wife and I usually order wine with dinner, and we've never gotten a bad recommendation from the wait staff. Just beware the tourist trap mark-up and limit your consumption. If you're in New Orleans to get your drink on, there are cheaper places to do that.
At this point, I'm sure I've had almost everything on the menu, and I honestly haven't had anything I'd rate lower than 4 stars. Due to personal preference, my go-to dishes are the crawfish etouffe (spelling?) and the shrimp creole. Serving sizes will leave you satisfied, maybe even stuffed - even my teenaged high school athletes leave here full.
The one drawback is that there is almost always a line to get in the door. I don't mind this and take advantage of the opportunity to interact with my family or guests. However, it can be very inconvenient for the obvious reasons. Plan ahead.
Mike Hardie
Loved the Creole meal. Gumbo, crayfish etouffe, maque corn, and we split bread pudding and brownie sundae.... Really really great.... Loved the decor, poisonings on cotton burlap from the 1940s..... Incredible place!
Dee Worrall
The wait staff was great and had wonderful suggestions. We tried several options with thumbs up all around! The gumbo was tasty and the etouffee hit the spot! One of my favorite meals on our trip!
LaLa Heffker
Pretty snazzy little place. Very crowded and tight seating on patio, but still nice. You get a fresh 12' Italian bread and butter right at the get go. Ordered the Vegetarian Chili and rice, it was delicious!! Husband had the Crawfish etouffee, and he cleaned his bowl! Also very delicious!

The Gumbo Shop is easily our favorite among NOLA French Quarter restaurants, leaving several other nearby spots in a tie for second best in our hearts. We’ve been coming here for the better part of four decades, and it never disappoints! The gumbo, of course is a must…get at least a cup on the side, if not a full bowl entree. (There’s an ongoing disagreement in our family between the Chicken Andouille & Seafood Okra options—I favor the seafood, but the others heartily disagree—plus there’s the Gumbo Z’herbes for something different…though note that’s not a vegetarian or vegan choice, as it kinda-sorta suggests). They also have all the Creole classics, and I often get the combo platter with Jambalaya, Shrimp Creole, and Red Beans & Rice; Crawfish Étouffée is also available as a slight up-charge substitute for the beans, plus they feature remoulade and blackened items as well. In addition, they offer a few po-boys, and even have a steak on the menu, plus several tasty desserts you won’t want to miss if you’re not fully stuffed…at least get some bread pudding to share, if not also something from the sundae and pie selections. And, of course, they’ve got a nice drink menu to complement your meal as well. So if you’re in town only briefly, don’t miss this restaurant just off of Jackson Square…and if you’re here for a longer stay, you might even consider a return visit!
Bryce Paquette
4 stars because I wasn't wowed by the food but on the other hand, it was still very good. Prices are extremely reasonable. I heard the jambalaya is their best dish. Didn't get to try it.
Jason Sinclair
Crawfish etouffee and seafood gumbo were very, very good. We came back for a second visit during our stay in New Orleans. There was a line at the door both times, but the hostess seated us without a long wait.
Melanie Davis
My husband enjoyed his combo platter - gumbo, etouffe & shrimp creole. I ordered a po’ boy- eghhh - I ordered a side of red beans and rice - the waiter who, I am hoping was working his first day, ordered an entree. That was good. Gi for the food - hopefully our server was an exception and hadn’t learned the ropes - he couldn’t answer most of our menu questions and the ones he did he got wrong. 🙄
Wesley Waterman
Amazing gumbo, perfectly seasoned. Really enjoyed the gator sausage too. And the sangria was really good (and extra alcoholic because they add brandy)
Derrick Robertson
Service was excellent, food was good but served at a pretty low warm temperature. Our server was great. We’d definitely go back!
Markus Impola
Fantastic food and could not stop eating. Enjoyed the sautéed shrimp poboy, boudin and a side of jambalaya. All were fantastic and the restaurant has a really nice ambiance. Prepare to wait in line or come early. We came around 4pm on a Saturday and got seated right away. It took a while to receive food but it is an experience and well worth it. Will definitely be returning here when in New Orleans.
Brad J (-b)
of course the gumbo was 💣 along with the combination platter: jambalaya, etoufee, red beans and rice 🙌🏾
Toya Marie
Ooh what a delicious and exciting experience! I had the seafood gumbo, with alligator sausage, and needless to say it was all very delicious. The place is very busy and everyone is packed in tightly. All staff wore masks but there is no social distancing so if you are concerned this is not the place for you. Pictured is also the chicken and andouille gumbo, spinach and artichoke dip, seafood covered crabcake, and the impeccable hurricane!
Examiner 007
Great food and service. The atmosphere is perfect. And for sure get the bread pudding! I had crawfish 🦞 and a stout beer. Highly recommend the food and the beer. …
Angela janosky
My very 1st meal in New Orleans based on a recommendation from a man at my hotel. I wish I could have had everything on the menu! Unfortunately I don't remember my servers name but the 3 gumbo platter with bread pudding and a whiskey sauce TO GO was spot on! Gaylin was super sweet as I left! Open air seating option was perfect!
Buwan N
There's an indoor seating area in the restaurant and an outdoor seating area in an enclosed garden. The waiter was amazing! He recommended the gumbo combination for me, which wasn't on the menu. My favorite was the turkey hot sausage gumbo.
FYI: The restaurant is open on Mondays. In Yelp, it says the restaurant is closed on Mondays, but that's false.
Burke Morrill
You guys know that loaf of bread that Aladdin steals in the Disney animated movie Aladdin? Well I ordered the gumbo trio to get a little taste of all New Orleans had to offer, and they supplemented my bowls of liquid with a bread loaf of the same size. I was dining alone! What a pleasant surprise. 5 star waitress, 5 star courtyard, 5 star bread loaf
Cindy Wadlington
We stopped in for Gumbo and a bit disappointed with it not being served heat hot. And flavor a bit bland. I would try again but I'd order something else! Cute place. Server busy?
lolive lolive
We found the gumbo disappointing; it was not awful, but we were sad we "lost" one meal there while in NOLA. We liked that bread and butter were served as a side, although the bread tasted like frozen supermarket bread. Service was so-so
Joel O
It was a good experience to have some traditional new Orleans specialty food. Tried almost all popular food from this place. The only bad part was, they charge almost 20% as gratuity with the bill. So after tipping, you'd be forced to spend at least 25-30% as gratuity, even if you like the service or not.
Edward Rodriguez
Nice spot off the beaten path of the French quarter. The food was good and filling. I really enjoyed their outdoor seating, it was in a courtyard. We went in December so it was a little chilly outside but they had propane patio heaters that keep us warm. They had a fair selection of wine, not sure if they had other alcohol. I only saw a wine list but they had a bar so I assume they have more than wine to offer. The one thing I didn't care for was their bread, it seemed like it was grocery store bought.
Catherine
First place we ate when we arrived in New Orleans. Food was good, Kevin our server was awesome. He gave us some recommendations that were spot on!
Tarik Aouad
The place has a giant lineup. Good? Yes very good. Unsure if specifically worth the wait, but the food did not leave me disappointed.
The alligator sausage is not on the menu. It's on request only, and is $8.99. It's good for the novelty, but unsure if worth it as a repeat item.
Chicken and sausage gumbo was recommended over the seafood one. It was very good.
Portions are reasonable, but you could easily share 3 entrées and 2 appetizers between 2 people.
Server was very nice and attentive. Made the experience very enjoyable, and he was genuine in giving recommendations and make sure everything was OK.
S M
So good! Highly recommend!
The food was delicious.
Excellent service.
Try the crawfish ettouffee or the bread pudding with Whiskey sauce
Nasiri Suzan
Setting and atmosphere had an older time feel to it. There was a long line and wait to get in, about an hour. The seafood gumbo was loaded with shrimp and absolutely delicious. It was hard to resist getting a bowl, but I wanted to taste some other dishes too. I had their special, red fish, crab and shrimp sauce on top. It didn't disappoint. Food was all outstanding.
My only issue was the waiting for entry and then another wait for the Waiter to take my order, that's why they only got 4stars.
Neptune
Love it. They have a few vegetarian stuff like soup, and you can be fully after it.
John Chen
This was in a convenient spot in the French Quarter and I was in the mood for some gumbo. Unfortunately, the gumbo didn't live up to my expectations, though I did enjoy it nonetheless. Not the best I've had. The restaurant itself was great though. Nice and cozy, the waitress Celeste was very kind and helpful, and the food came out quickly.
They did have a crab cake special the day I came and that was really delicious. Unfortunately I don't think they have it on the menu, so you might not be able to order it at a different time.
John Hsieh
This place really does live up to their hype of being part of the Best Gumbo category of restaurants. My wife and I visited the other night and ordered the gator sausage (special), seafood gumbo, blackened catfish salad, creole combo platter, shrimp po-boy, and sides of crawfish etouffee and mascque choux corn. The gator sausage to start was so good that we immediately placed a second order upon devouring the first order. The blackened catfish was very well seasoned and complimented perfectly with the cool fresh greens. The salad came with remoulade on the side that was absolutely delicious. The smoothness of flavor in the gumbo that came from okra that has been cooked for hours is truly something else. The shrimp po-boy is essentially a hollowed out french roll stuffed full of shrimp creole. This meant we had a double serving of shrimp creole from the combo platter. The combo platter was good, but the spice is definitely on the milder side of cajun seasoning. We ended the meal with the bread pudding, which was a bit on the sweeter side. The service was on-point and we were lucky to have gotten a seat in the courtyard, which enhanced our dining experience.
Kenneth Parris
Gumbo didn't impress. Neither did the jumbalaya compared to what I tasted in another famous establishment. Shrimp Creole was aight. Praline sundae was the best part lol. Prices were good though.
Victor Torres
This is the heart of new Orleans when it comes to classic NOLA food!!! The jambalaya and gumbo is perfect for those with an appetite for seafood and non seafood eaters. The taste and flavors are out of this world!!
Jessie Naumann
Food n drinks were delicious! The grill was down but I didn't find out till I was giving my order. Something like that, the hostess should of told me before we sat down. Then when I decided I order a crab cake, the waiter asked 1 or 2, I said 1. My bf gets his food n I got my side. When were were done the waiter brought the check but I said oh were waiting on the crab cakes still. The waiter said no, the grill is down... I was confused because I've only had either fried or baked crab cakes. And more confused why he didn't say that's when he asked 1 or 2. I think he forgot to put it in and tried to cover it by blaming it on the grill. Maybe not, other wise service was great, very friendly with southern charm. Drink was strong and the price was cheap for how good the food was.
N H
A busy little restaurant with a seafood gumbo you can wait for. Have to wait to be seated and everyone in your party must be present to be seated. There were too many tables and chairs inside the restaurant and the table felt small for travellers that carry any bags/strollers/large camera/etc. Food arrived very quickly because the food is pre-cooked for the day. Shrimp creole was spicier than the seafood gumbo. Really enjoyed digging into the southern pecan pie with ice cream.
Michelle Spencer
Gumbo shop was recommended and it was good eating. The hostess offered patio seating with heat versus indoor seating. We choose indoor window seat. Quite cozy. Our waitress was very nice. Appetizer artichoke spinach dip ( could have used a little salt, it was bland) & blackened catfish was tasty. Gumbo was delicious. Crawfish etouffee hit the spot!!!! Would definitely go back when visiting the Big Easy.
KC Mitch
Good gumbo but not the best. Great crab cakes and good atmosphere. Clean restaurant and friendly staff. Go early it gets busy and the service slows down. Indoor and outdoor seating. Red beans and rice is really good. Get it with an extra sausage. Have a drink and enjoy
L Aguilar-Chef-Cook-Foodie
The gumbo was tasty the etouffee also flavorful, jambalaya was good, nice atmosphere also. We didn't know how to proceed about ordering with so much going on, so our server "antuan" if I I remember correctly was very helpful and got a little taste of their best. He mentioned next time they can do some real "ala Carte"options just ask!. There can prolly be better but I would suggest come start your food tour here!. It's worth it.
Puka Toa
THIS PLACE WAS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I would definitely recommend this to people. The server Paul was absolutely wonderful! Me and my group were from out of town so we didnt know what to get so he gave us some suggestions on what was good to try. If I were to come back to New Orleans I would definitely come visit this place again. We went around opening time so we got seated quickly. If you dont want to wait in line I would recommend going at opening time which I believe is at 11am. I have nothing bad to say about this place. So thank you Gumbo Shop and thank you Paul. Oh and also all the food that is pictured were really good but if I had to choose my top 2 it is definitely the crab cake and the crawfish pasta 😊
jmike 45acp
I’ve never been to the restaurant, but I did buy the Gumbo Shop’s cookbook from Amazon several years ago. The directions are easy to follow and the dishes are absolutely AMAZING! You won’t be disappointed. BUY THE BOOK!
Bill Baker
Gumbo is very good, bread pudding good. They still have their cheap ($9) Sazerac that's perfect for after lunch (3PM). Go there!
Yvonne Vaughn
Great restaurant with authentic cajun food. The seafood gumbo is excellent. Had the warm bread pudding for dessert which was outstanding. The Cajun Bloody Mary was very tasty. Service was very good.
Vipul Singh
Friend and I went for lunch after running the New Orleans marathon. Didn't have to wait. All in all, we had the blackened fish nuggets, Creole Combination Platter, the chicken gumbo, the chicken po-boy, and the warm bread pudding. Everything was fantastic. Not expensive either. Loved the experience, the food, the prompt service. Also really liked all the seasonings on the table, and used them quite liberally.
Shannon Walden
Yum yum yummo! Great food and fast service! Love that authentic Louisiana taste. I opted for the chicken gumbo and my mate got the seafood pasta, both were mouthwatering. Grab some crab cakes while you wait for the main course, you won’t be disappointed!
Stephen Medina
Our waitress, Eby, was amazing !
I'm sure she still is :)
Great food, real people, wonderful old historical building. No hype and wonderful :)
Thomas Krajewski
Cool location- if taking a cab have it drop you off a few blocks away and walk.
The menu is nice and reasonably priced I think the drinks are just okay and the quality of the food is good. Would eat here again, service was adequate but not exceptional.
April Kyle
The wait to get in (maybe 20-30 min) was well worth it. The service could have been a little better but they were pretty busy. Our waitress came to our table several times, but she was not particularly friendly. The Cajun Mary was a splendid version of its namesake. I ordered the Creole Dinner with seafood okra gumbo (amazing flavor but had a bit too many "parts"), shrimp Creole (this was my favorite version of the dish, it was rich and slightly sweet), jambayla (also very good), red beans and rice (slightly better than standard), and bread pudding (nothing special). The building is really cool too! I'll definitely be coming back here next time I'm in NOLA!
Marilyn Terry
I always love to come here for red beans and rice. The staff is so nice and helpful.
Max Higgins
Food great.... We sat outside and all I could keep smelling is the propane on the second floor....... I would not dine outdoors until they move the 20+ propane tanks the hold on the second floor above the courtyard.... not safe and super bad smell
Warda Shafi
I went to the gumbo shop on the weekend just before lunch time. The queue could be very long, so keep that in mind before you visit this place. However I got squeezed in very fast, and even though the place was jam packed the service was quick. We had gumbo and a sausage appetizer and it was enough for two girls. Our total was around 15$ so 8$/person.They also have bottomless Mimosas and happy hours. The place was clean, the people were friendly and the food was worth it.Beaware of being seated with complete set of strangers on the table though.
Tim McKeoun
Good food! I had the white beans and rice while my girlfriend got the gumbo. We both enjoyed our food, but my girlfriend said the gumbo was a little too fishy. Usually a long wait to get in, but they take care of you quickly once you're inside.
Wing Lee
Keri, the waitress was amazing. She was attentive, friendly, and have great suggestions. The catfish St Pete’s and bread pudding was delicious. Alligator sausage was interesting but the sauce was a perfect match.
Lisa Lam
I came here by myself around 1:30 on a Thursday. The wait was 30 minutes because of the line, but it was pretty worth it. Had the Jumbalaya, creole cream spinach, and the special - alligator sausage. All were pretty good. But the customer service was the best part. My server, Eby, was super sweet. I had the bread pudding and I told her it was pretty soggy, like it was drenched in the sauce for a while. And she took it off my bill. Very nice. Would recommend to others, if you don't mind the wait at normal lunch hours (and I imagine dinner).
Andrew Thornhill
If you are looking for out of this world gumbo this is it. Definitely get the complete Creole dinner. Lots of choices and superb food. The fluffiest most delectable bread pudding ever tasted. The staff is super knowledgeable about their food and available to answer any questions.
Robbey DeLeon
A perennial favorite. I've been a regular since 2000. The food is great, the service is great. Incredibly consistent, the only change I've noticed since my first visit, is the really deep spoons have long been replaced with regular spoons. 🤣 The bread pudding is addictive, and I hated bread pudding before trying Gumbo Shops. The creole creamed spinach is a favorite as well. Gumbo Shop used to have mail order service, but that has ended. Why? I don't know. I go to New Orleans quite often, but I used to order the gumbo and étoufée as I live in Houston, and I'm always craving the chicken andouille gumbo. Start shipping again!! ☺️
Rick Noll
A true iconic restaurant in the French Quarter. Naturally 1 of the best gumbo's but almost everything on the menu is outstanding. They are absolute geniuses with their seafood specials.
Whenever we have gone to New Orleans it is a must to stop at Gumbo Shop at least once. If you never have, you should definitely do. ENJOY!
KimAnh Tran
The gumbo shop is a great experience if you are new to the great city of NOLA! Beware there is usually always a line to wait here, but it is worth the wait!
Full of Nola’s famous creole dishes all in one spot! the food and service was great! Great drinks to compliment as well!
Alice
We came here after our bus driver recommended it. It's a great place to try some creole classics, excellent value compared to some other restaurants in the French Quarter. Good selection of cocktails too.
Jade Pod
We ordered takeout and the staff was very friendly. We got the shrimp creole, the crawfish étouffée, the blackened fish nuggets, and bread pudding. The shrimp creole and nuggets was okay. The etouffee and bread pudding wasn't the best.
It was packed in there, but it looked like they were squeezing people in, so prepare for a possible wait.
Victor Torres
I saw on YouTube that this location was famous and I found out why!! The jambalaya and gumbo cater to those who like and dislike seafood!! Genuinely the food of new Orleans!!
Reshma “majestic” Tarachand
I read about this place way before my visit from NYC. We went there Friday night and it was packed, but luckily we didn't have to wait to be seated. My husband had to try the gator sausage, as we heard it's the delicacy in New Orleans. We had two seafood gumbo, although it was delicious, it wasn't what I had in mind... all in all it's a great atmosphere to be in.
jason molidor
This spot lives up to the hype! Gumbo and classics creole food is done very well here. The prices are great, and they have all your favorite food. The decor is definitely something, a real throwback in time. If it isn't too hot try sitting on their lovely patio. Be forewarned it is right in the middle of the happenings in the French quarter do it can get really crowded. You can easily find yourself in for a wait.
Vanessa Mallard
Some business associates, coworkers and I came for a late dinner. It was a Tuesday night and the place was pretty packed. This place is lively and they even have a courtyard. They had some different flavored drink specials, that I wanted to try. I started off by being safe and ordered a pina colada margarita. It tasted horrible. The waiter,, Miguel, was able to get me another one. I tried the honeydew margarita and it was pretty good. Despite being really busy, Miguel was a very good waiter. We all opted to try the gator sausage and it was really good. The majority of the Complete Creole dinner (four courses of specified options). I got the Creole Combination Platter (Crawfish Etouffe, Jambalaya, and Red Beans and Rice). I wasn't particularly fond of the plating with all of the food thrown together on the plate. Also, the food was just okay. Nothing to write home about. I don't think I'll be giving this place another try...
Melissa Davila
The service and food were amazing. It's a nice little place to rest after walking up an appetite in the quarter. I would definitely go back, try their red beans and rice or their chicken sausage gumbo!
Farooq Akbar
Amazing place. Waited 2 hours in line to get seated but it was worth the wait. The Gator Sausage was good. For people who don't eat pork, make sure to ask the waiter to double check. The chicken jumbo got andouille sausage that may sound like chicken andouille sausage but it is actually pork based...
roy o.
Nice place but their gumbo is a bit disappointing, delicious French bread though
Patrick Schultz
We had gumbo, jambalaya, and shrimp creole for lunch, it was so good you had to force yourself to eat slowly. Our server was excellent. There was a line out the door, but we waited less than 10 minutes to be seated. If you want creole cuisine, come here for a meal.
Stefanie Szabo
Fantastic place!! I was really impressed the two times we were there - very cozy and vintage New Orleans atmosphere from murals of the city on the walls to the decor. Delicious, authentic, and reasonably priced food and fantastic service in our experience. Also a stone's throw from Jackson Square! Gumbo Shop has everything you're looking for in a restaurant :)
Matt Raybourn
Great service! Excellent traditional New Orleans Food. Wonderful atmosphere. Kevin was fantastic! Look forward to coming back!
Bernice Villamor
Our experience was delightful! Alligator sausage was so good especially with the mustard sauce. We had bowls of seafood and chicken gumbo, we preferred the latter. We also had the creole platter (jambalaya rice with etouffee) which is definitely a thumbs up. I was only disappointed with the shrimp po boy because it was soggy.
Thip R
Bread pudding and crab cakes are super good. The rest we ordered oysters, which were cold by the time they served, shrimp and grits was bland, Brie and salad was okay.
Atmosphere was nice. Crowds are older and not loud.
Faith Brandon
Place was packed but we were seated in no time. Service was nice and efficient. Food was fairly priced and tasted great.
We ordered the gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish etouffee. They also had gator sausages which was the best, in my opinion.
There are two unisex bathrooms that are very bare and not too clean
Jim Scantlin
This was an OK stop. After some recommendations about this being THE place for gumbo it was just OK. Gumbo was straight forward but nothing special. Salad and bread was OK. Jambalaya wasn’t that great. The service was pretty good, not amazing. Better to look for something better in the Quarter.

The Gumbo Shop is where the locals recommended for authentic Creole and I am glad they did. The food was fantastic and the service was incredible. If you are not sure what to get try the Creole Combination Platter or ask for Jamal, he will take care of you.
Lavinia Koh
Absolutely loved the food. We tried both the seafood and chicken gumbo as appetisers and shared the blackened catfish as a main. The catfish was so simple yet full of flavour and came with a delicious buttery mash potato. Would definitely come back!

Another place with really long lines. We had to stand in line for over an hour before we got in. The cocktails were so so but the gumbo was pretty good. One of our group ordered the platter with jambalaya and it came as two plates. One had two sausages with red beans and rice. The other plate had half jambalaya and half red beans with some rice in the middle. We also ordered the cajun pasta and I dont recommend that.
Nice place for the gumbo especially when it's cold but I wouldn't stand in line for over an hour
Doctor Chef
Summary: In a town bustling with Gumbo restaurants, the Gumbo Shop maintains its place as the best of the best with its authentic Creole fare. All menu items are rich in flavor and seasoned perfectly. The shrimp creole and jambalaya are in a league of their own and unmatched by other rival restaurants. Patrons can expect superb meals and a deep longing to return to the restaurant once it's over.
Must Try: Creole combination platter with Crawfish etouffee.
Also recommended: Red beans and rice, Blackened fish po-boy, and Praline sundae.
Avoid: N/A
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Outstanding, worth a special excursion

If there's a place my guy and I would go back to: it would absolutely be the Gumbo Shop. Where we were seated was a tad bit snug and there was a lady who kept backing her chair into me, then eventually sat on the same side of the table with her partner. The bathroom was... Interesting? Aside from that, our server was really helpful and patient (I think his name was Gerald) because I'm so incredibly indecisive. The food was delicious (the crawfish etouffee was amazing esp after mixing it with the jambalaya) and I wish we had time to go back. There's a seasoning of heat powder--no salt that made our meal JUUUST right! I'd love some for my kitchen.
Saravanan Ram
Wow. The best complete creole dinner you can get for your buck. Its filling, mouthwatering and limited option full packed meal. Visited here on the first day of my NOLA visit. Crawfish etouffee is amazing. Had to wait for almost 45 mins before we were seated. It’s worth the wait and your money.

This place is 100% the classic New Orleans culinary experience as I had always imagined it. Quaint little restaurant stuck in a historic building, and we we're lucky enough to be seating in the outdoor patio in the courtyard out back. The food is heavily flavored and fragrant, which gives the whole restaurant a nostalgic aroma. I had the Jambalaya, and it and the french bread where outstanding.
Kaushik Kuberanathan
A group of 7 of us visited New Orleans for the weekend around the 2nd week of December and picked this place just because they had great reviews and we were in the area. We had to wait a little over 30 minutes to get a seat and I guess they were understaffed because the service was very slow and also not worthy of a 4 star. I had to call my waiter atleast 3 times telling him we are ready to order when he took the order of half the table and they had their food brought to them even before the other half could place our order. That apart, if you have dietary restrictions, this place is GREAT. They have separate vegan options and the waiter was able to get me a copy of the chef's recipe book so I could ensure I was okay with it. The Vegan Po-Boy was a big let down but the other options were decent. The Bloody Mary was very average as well. The 3 stars for the ambiance, the location, the sit out area that allows a few guests to wait seated in line and the availability of vegan options.

AMAZING CREOLE FOOD…
Everything- Veg gumbo, sea food gumbo, blackened catfish po-boy, vegetarian red beans and rice gumbo, fresh fish gumbo …
JQ made the entire experience even better, best server ever ….

The gumbo is 'slap yo momma' good- no joke. I inhaled my gumbo- it was delicious. The hot sauces were quite good too. Gumbo is served with a french style bread- comparable to the size of a foot long subway sandwich bread, in my opinion.
The customer service is excellent so i will definitely return to this spot when i return to NOLA.
** i forgot to take a pic before i started eating :)
Tiffany M
Best gumbo I had while I was in New Orleans! Everything from the drinks to the apps to the gumbo was delicious. We even bought some to go so we could bring it home.
S. M.
The jambalaya was so good! My husband got the Gumbo And enjoyed it as well. The jambalaya had so much flavor and everything you would think a jambalaya from New Orleans would taste like. The service was quick as these dishes are already made. This is a must stop for great New Orleans food.
Ashish Singh
Ahh! What can I say about Gumbo shop? It was an absolute delight. Even though, we waited for 50 mins for a table, it was absolutely worth it. The Jambalaya was awesome, the grilled shrimp was perfect. The andouille sausage gumbo was spectacular. I can go on and on and on.... All I can say is, go there early with a bunch of friends, you'll have a great time.
Kelly Binkley
This is the place to sample New Orleans cuisine! They have a great sample plate with jambalaya, etouffee, and shrimp creole. We also tried a creamy crawfish pasta and it was the creamy and delicious. Also, their boudin and mustard is a must try! Great food with a great, historic aesthetic.

A nice taste of culture hidden in the French Quarter, very close to Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral.
It has been in business since 1948 and has a good reputation in town. The building goes back even further. The restaurant is located in a restored cottage from 1796, known as the Commagere-Mercier House.
When I go on trips, I try to eat at a joint that I think would best represent the local culture in their cuisine.
The waitress brought tasty French Bread to break into before our entrees.
My wife and I split the Creole Combination Platter (a large platter of shrimp creole, jambalaya and red beans and rice) and a Gumbo Cup to try everything out. Each section had its own unique flavor. Each dish was potent in powerful explosive flavour. My favorite was Jambalaya... I thought it wasn't as spicy or had a kick to it at all, but the consistency of the rice with the other ingredients was very good.
I also had a taste of my children's Blackened Fish, which was really good.
Everyone else in my party definitely enjoyed their food too.
Service was friendly and we were served promptly.

We went here on our first night of our six night trip... it was so good I HAD to go back again. The first time I had a combo with Jambalaya, Chicken Gumbo & bread pudding and everything was out of this world. The second time I went back I just had a full bowl of the Chicken Gumbo and if course bread pudding. They have a full menu of traditional Creole cuisine if you want to try other things. They do NOT take reservations and you have to wait in line so be prepared!
Pranjali Sharma
We came here for an early dinner. Could've gotten seated immediately, but had to wait until all of our party arrived. The place is busy! I'd walked past it a couple of times the previous days and the line went out to almost half a block! Inside, it is definitely cute. Their bar has an ancient pharmacy feel to it. Bright interiors.
Drinks were decent enough. My friends ordered margaritas, I ordered their German Riesling (wasn't too sweet, which I like). We chose the seafood okra gumbo because the server recommended that as 100%authentic. Because I love crab cakes and they had them on their specials list, we ordered them as an appetizer. My friends also ordered to chicken gumbo and a pasta. Everything was simply delicious!
If you like okra, the seafood gumbo is definitely worth a try. I don't understand why they put a whole small crab in there though. I am not very good at eating crabs, so ended up leaving most of it in the plate. My fellow diners did the same.
The crab cakes were delicious. The sauce they came with was good, but maybe put a little less salt on the sauce so that the whole thing does not become too salty.
The pasts was heaven!! We ended up finishing all of our portions, so I think thats a win.
Recommend this place- get here around 5 pm before the crowd gets in :)
brittany johnson
The food was amazing. I'm not a big spicy fan, so I was worried about trying gumbo. I had the shrimp and the gumbo and they were both amazing not very spicy but had a little heat. My waiter was also very attentive. 12/10.
Alison Hernandez
Very friendly staff and great food! Of course, you've got to get the gumbo! Great desserts as well. A must stop while visiting NOLA.
Emiliana Tanguy
The Gumbo Shop is a nice restaurant to go eat with friend or family. I had blackened fish for the first time, with mashed potatoes, and it was really good! The restaurant was almost full but it wasn’t too noisy, the atmosphere was nice. I recommend it.
Yasheaka Oakley
The food is delicious. Customer service is good. They don't serve Southern Sweet Tea - surprisingly. Expect to pay about $50+ for 2 adults. Pictured: Red beans and rice. Blackened chicken po'boy. Seafood gumbo cup with an alligator sausage.
Justo Alma
For my first trip to New Orleans, this was a very nice place. With excellent food, great service and reasonable pricing. Overall it was an amazing experience both gastronomically and cultural.
Tessica Patrick
First time to New Orleans and this restaurant was recommended by one of the locals. So it kinda requires an individual breakdown, the spinach dip was just ok it reminded me more of creamed spinach that you find in the freezer section but we did eat it however, I would not order it again. I ordered the shrimp creole and it wasn't the best however it's not all bad there. My husband ordered the special for the day which was oddly named BBQ'd shrimp over linguine and it was amazing! That dish needs to be a permanent option on the menu a little pricey but worth it. It didn't look like what I was imagining but I literally got an extra loaf of bread just to soak up the sauce. Everyone was so nice and it was good and cool.
Xin Zhang
This place feels like someone’s grandma is cooking in the kitchen. The gumbo was good and the salad dressing was unbelievable good and interesting. Such a cheap eat place but high quality.
Duke
First things first when we arrived in NOLA: Gumbo and jambalaya! Gumbo shop hit the spot! There was a long line but it moved swiftly along and we were inside after 15 minutes.
I know people have their favorite restaurant but as far as flavor goes the food hit all the points without being too expensive. Using real andouille sausage as the keystone for many of their Creole dishes I can see why many people I spoke with came back within days.
Vanessa D
Arrived for dinner around 6pm.... the wait was about 10-15 mins at that time. The meal starts of with a delicious and warm loaf of French bread and butter. Fresh baked bread is always yummy! But the butter was cold.... I think warm or soft whipped butter would compliment the bread that much more.
I ordered the creole combination plate and substituted the red beans and rice for the crawfish etouffee. My sister got the okra seafood gumbo. The shrimp creole had great flavor....a tomato base sauce. The jambalaya also was perfectly seasoned and very good. The crawfish etouffee was my least favorite. This was the first time I had it. The sauce was gravy like and to me tasted a bit muddled.... no flavors stood out. The gumbo was also good. Nice flavor, not spicy.
The service was friendly. A nice place for a meal.... but I would say I feel like there are other places with better selection of the same food with better flavor profile.
James Wolf
Food was very good. I had the full creole dinner which was a nice opprotunity to try a lot of things on the menu. It was all very good. My server was very pleasant but I think overwhelmed. It took over a half hour after finishing my entre to get my desert and bill. Good thing I had no place to be. Id eat there again but make sure i had plenty of time.
Kapilan Tamilselvan
I had a chicken gumbo at the Gumbo Shop. It wasn't worth the hype at all. I also had Alligator Sausage which was pretty good. If you hadn't had one, it would pretty much taste like any other sausage. The place had great ambiance
James Ng
Second time in NO and the second time I've been here. Just a great atmosphere with amazing gumbo. Can't ask for much more.

2017
We managed to show up when the line was short but even if it looks long, the food comes out pretty fast, so don't lose hope if the line is spilling out onto the street.
Seafood okra gumbo is solid 7/10. Shrimp and gumbo are cooked well and the flavor was good, but didn't have enough spice for me.
Combination plate with shrimp creole, crawfish etouffe, and jambalaya was amazing. The real MVP is the jambalaya; while all three were well prepared and presented, the jambalaya is what I would order on it's own. Incredible flavor and a good mix of rice and the other ingredients.
Warning: the Shrimp poboy was basically the shrimp creole in a hollowed out roll. This sounds fantastic to me, but if you have preconceived notions about what a shrimp poboy should be, this is probably not it; you have been warned.
Place gets a little crowded, but it seems worth the wait and I see some other pictures from yelpers who enjoyed some awesome looking poboys. I will definitely be back.
Charline Dänzer
Luckily the first place we went for gumbo in the quarter - and with no doubt the best! (we tried others as well) Friendly service and a nice Backyard round up the experience - If you are not into gumbo try the spinach-dip!
Gemmi_7893
I'm from Florida, so I try to indulge when I have authentic gumbo and this is the place to be. I had the seafood gumbo and some of the Creole combination platter and I don't think I'd ever eaten so much food in my life. It was the epitome of my trip. The waiter was amazing too! Between bringing us more bread, offering us some bread pudding, and always making sure our drinks were filled, it was a great time with my family.
Oh & the bread was perfect, good luck not getting full off of it alone.
Vanessa Young
They had amazing food! Very beautiful restaurant with painted walls of old New Orleans. They are located just off Jackson square and we could smell the deliciousness long before we reached the restaurant. We had an unremarkable server, Keri. She forgot to put our order in, forgot about us, seemed tipsy and reeked of cigarette smoke, and when we asked for the check we had to flag down another server 15 or so minutes later because she has yet to show back up. We had also ordered their awesome spiced cider and house spices to go and Keri did not manage to take care of it. The manager, when informed, was very courteous and willing to do whatever to make our experience better. We did come back later and ordered the drinks and spices and the bartender was absolutely amazing and took great care of us. The manager also Came back over and apologized again. We will be back for sure. The food was just that awesome.

Came here for dinner one night after getting a recommendation to come. We checked to see what lines could be like around the time we would normally choose to eat. Fortunately, we arrived a little before 5, and were seated within 15 minutes. The line just kept growing after we sat down.
We ordered seafood gumbo and chicken gumbo to start. They were both very flavorful. The only thing is neither had much seafood or chicken. The seafood only had a couple tiny shrimps, no crab, and the chicken had a very small amount with one small sliver of andouille sausage.
For the main dishes, we ordered crawfish and penne pasta, and the combination platter. Both were very tasty. We each ordered a hurricane. If you don’t like pineapple, you won’t like this drink.
We ended up buying the gumbo shop cookbook, and I cannot wait to make some of the recipes, especially the gumbo!!
Mercedes
Everything was delicious. My bread pudding was too hot and I burned my tongue pretty bad which is why I didn’t rate it 5 stars
Laura Austin
I am glad my husband agreed with me on going to the Gumbo Shop. We were in New Orleans for our anniversary and were looking for local creole cuisine. I searched on Google and this place came up.
From the moment we entered we were greeted very pleasantly by the staff. We ordered and the food did not take long. Everything was delicious from the appetizers to the desserts.
A must go place when you are in New Orleans. A couple of blocks from Bourbon street.
Yash
The place has a good ambience . Crab cakes were really good . We ordered the specials bbq shrimp - but it hardly tasted like bbq. The gumbo is worth trying !
Sabrina C
Got the Creole Combo Platter, praline sundae and a Hurricane. Everything was so good! Place was very cute, a little on the romantic side although I was alone, and was here pre-pandemic

Had the best time here. Its my favorite when I visit the city. Very consistent with service and food. This is my third visit but had to leave review because the service Damian provided was outstanding. He was efficient, hospitable and he really took his time with our service even though it was a busy time for the restaurant without him knowing he really made my experience on my birthday. I work in the service industry as a manager and he is a type of person I would have training all of my new hires. If you dont go any where to eat in the French quarter...COME HERE.
This visit drank amedoa I think is whats its called and red beans and rice. My dining mate had the seafood trilogy:chicken, okra, and duck gumbo.
Melanie Trinh
I was recommended to The Gumbo Shop by a local, as they said that it's the best gumbo anywhere in the city.
We ordered the creole platter (which is a mix rice and beans, shrimp creole and jambalaya) and chicken gumbo, at the recommendation of our server, Brandon. I'm glad I listened to him because it was delicious. Not SUPER spice, as I am a bit of a wuss. Wonderful flavor!
I would totally recommend anyone looking for an authentic gumbo experience to come here. Also, their honeydew daiquiri was awesome!
Chris Todd
The vegan gumbo was totally delicious. Our server also seemed like a really nice guy.
Aubrey Lu
We stumbled upon this place after walking around the area and glad we found it. It is one of our favorite places to eat and is a great spot for lunch. The price is great for what you get and the food is delicious.
Lance Lewis
Overall, a good restaurant. As a person who loves cajun food this place was good but not the best I've had in New Orleans. The rest of the party loved the food and the vegan with us was thrilled to see a vegan menu options available. Overall, a nice place to visit when looking for a decent place to eat in the French Quarter.
tara king
The best gumbo ever!!! The service was spectacular and the waiter was so good at making recommendations. I would come back here again.
Stanford Kim
The Gumbo Shop is a classic New Orleans restaurant with an antique vibe and well-organized service. The food came out quickly and both the Seafood Gumbo and Jambalaya were incredibly delectable. This was the first place I ate at in New Orleans, and it definitely didn't fail to surprise me. Thumbs up and 5/5 stars all-around.
Sally DeWitt
Found this adorable restaurant off the beaten path and took a chance. We were not disappointed. My husband and I tried one of the combination platters that included red beans and rice, jambalaya, and shrimp creole. My husband also tried the Crawfish etouffee. That was honestly the best thing on the plate and I will be dreaming of that until we come back to visit next. Honestly it was all awesome though. The prices are also very reasonable for the area and the outdoor seating area is charming.
Pea Jay
During our week stay in the French Quarter we visited 3 times. If you hit it juat right there's not even a line. The Tasso Crawfish Pasta was incredible, bread pudding divine. Go if you get a chance, it's worth it.
Marielle L
At this beautiful restaurant I have tasted my first gumbo and jambalaya and the alligator sausages It was delicious I really liked everything what I have tried on the menu.
Good cocktails and wine!
Nice staff good service too
Kiko J
Good for vegetarians, they have another veggie & gf menu. Feel free to try some cocktails here. Absolutely surprising! I had sazerac and mambo, both are great!!!!Service is great, too! Very nice and attentive. Would like to visit again. May be busy and long line at dinner time.
Rauce Powers
After a week of eating around the city, this place takes the cake, by far. Not only is the food exquisite, AND cheap - but the service is absolutely out of this world. I wish I knew his name, but the young gentleman that served our enormous party was FANTASTIC. 10/10 would recommend!!!
Todd Cheek
A must-visit restaurant when you're in the French Quarter. Gumbo is obviously good, but the boudin is some of the best I've ever had! You can also get a real good hurricane there.
Brennan Patten
This has got to be the best gumbo I've ever had in my life. Such friendly service. And the bread was to die for. And also, the catfish platter was probably the best catfish I've ever had in my life, and I grew up in Iowa. Awesome!
Frank McWilliams
Forgot to take a picture of the food but it was very good. Had the combination platter and wasn’t disappointed. One of our favorites in New Orleans.
Katy Grudzieski
Came here with a group of seven and we loved everything we ordered. I ordered the chicken gumbo, spinach & artichoke dip, and a strawberry pina colada. Everything was so good! Our waiter was all business and no talk but he provided great service and recommendations. Will return!
Yogendra Rajkarnikar
We love food which so much authentic of New Orleans and we enjoyed environment of your lovely restaurants, our first visit from Kathmandu Nepal...
Patrick Lobb
I don't know where to start with the exceptional service and food we had here. I ate until I couldnt anymore and then still had the bread pudding. Everything was perfect from the amazing server to the phenomenal food to the charming atmosphere. This place is doing it right. Dont be daunted by the seemingly long line out the door. It's a narrow hallway and they seat quickly. A line out the door is probably only a 20 or 30 minutes wait and well worth it.
John Hill
Stopped into Gumbo Shop for lunch while walking around the French Quarter the other day. It was an excellent choice. Since it was Crawfish season, I opted for the Crawfish Ettoufee and it was delicious, and reasonably priced. The portion was generous. My server, Kevin, was attentive, and easy to interact with. Paired my meal with a nice local IPA; I was a happy and content person. I would certainly recommend Gumbo Shop as a great place to visit while in New Orleans.
sunny kim
Perhaps this is more of a tourist trap, but visiting from out of town, this place was highly rated. The wife and I shared a gumbo, crawfish estoufee, and redbeans and rice. Best thing was gumbo, but nothing special. I'd say nothing was memorable, especially considering all the dishes came out in a few minutes luke warm after ordering. Seems like they didn't reheat they're giant pot enough.
Stone Nguyen
Was asked to bring my company to somewhere with authentic creole food before I left New Orleans, and my search came here. Was definitely floored with the coziness of the restaurant, and the very friendly waiter we had.
My friend had the creole combination platter and I had crawfish and pasta in tasso cream, we were very satisfied with the portions we got as well as the quality of the food. Service was top notch and was checked up on many times. Will make this a stop again when I visit New Orleans in the near future!
Saunders Joyner
Ok..... we've eaten gumbo a few times, at a few places to have a variety to judge from. The gumbo at Gumbo Shop is the best I've had in New Orleans...... hands down. Tastes completely different from any other gumbo in the city, flavor/seasoning wise perfectly balanced.
Angela Dang
Visited this place for lunch before took off from New Orleans. It was on my must eat list. Ordered the seafood gumbo & platter with bean & rice/jambalaya/shrimp creole. Seafood was ok. The flavor wasn't as good as I had at ACME. There was this earthy taste that I didn't like, shrimps bit overcooked, enough spices. The platter had good amount of each but too much rice that made you full quickly. Same earthy taste & not too much flavor. My favorite part of this meal would be the fresh baked French roll with butter. Customer services were good. Ok place overall.
nick wheeler
best gumbo in NOLA? not sure... it's the only one I ate. BUT it was super good and I would say it's the best gumbo I've ever had. I also had their bloody mary and that was pretty good as well. I would definitely give it a go if you're in NOLA
Alex Tupper
Amazing food (perhaps a bit pricey) but the environment plus the speed and quality of service are definitely worth the price!! Jenna was my server and she was AMAZING! Incredibly nice and super attentive!
Erik Amundson
Damion was our server and he was amazing. He handled our large party really well. Amazing gumbo, drinks, and he clearly told me what vegan options were available.
Tabetha Green
They require proof of COVID vaccination which I fully support. The gumbo both seafood and chicken andouille were excellent.
Joseph Connor
We've been to new Orleans five times. Every time our first meal, lunch, has been here. Delicious food. A must to eat.
Mars Parker
The corn masque was good i tried the gumbo here and it was okay. I really liked the jambalaya, shrimp etoufee, and shrimp creole. We got Brandon as our waiter and he was the best. You cannot miss out on the bread pudding it is that good.
Yani A
Delicious gumbo, chicken and seafood. I loved the 3 course dinner with dessert. Delicious options and very fulfilling. It a must try place when you are in NOLA.
Joe Wang
Super friendly staff, super fast food. Really good spot for a quick lunch.
Christian Borkowski
Name may sound touristy, it's not. Locals eat here. Outstanding gumbo and poboys. Love the courtyard.
Deepti Kalkur
the warm bread with butter was much appreciated!!
tasty food.
The bread pudding was too sweet.
Bit pricey and the restrooms can be better.
Peter Stemmeler
Server was friendly and Gumbo was tasty per usual. Could have been a bit hotter.
Michael Pernice
Not a people person so there were way to many people in there but what can you do. Food was wonderful and service was even better.
Hunter Seech
Visited this place during Mardi Gras a few years ago and really enjoyed it! My group of 3 waited maybe 25 mins or so (all the restaurants were absolutely packed). I forget which varieties of gumbo I got, but everything was delicious. If you’re in the area and want some authentic gumbo, this place is a good option!
Daniel Pango
The place is tiny, the food is amazing, worth waiting 30 min to get seated. Service is fast. They even have a cute patio to sit in and enjoy your Creole dinner. Price is also reasonable. It seems that they don’t take advantage of their spot to overprice their food, which is great. I lien this place! 👍 …
Tonya Ledbetter
Great food, even better service (Troy was great) . Best bread pudding in town.
Shannon Lett
Amazing service via our waiter Kenneth. Beautiful ambiance. Flavorful food. Prompt and professional service. Highly recommend
Kaylaa T. Blackwell
Really special and a must visit if you are in the area. Since words cant describe it...I will just say the taste will build unforgettable memories 😍😋😋
So much to choose from, but everything so worth it because its amazingly scrumptious 😋😋 and delicious. Tip: Try the Gumbo dish, the Catfish dish and for the sides try the corn 🌽. Also the bread pudding with whisky sauce😉...I had two...one after lunch at the restaurant and one to go☆.
aaron edewards
Goodness they hav fantastic everything. I'm particularly fond of po'boys and jambalaya and gumbo and bread pudding. On the extreme plus side, the service is top notch and its right off Bourbon Street.
Jasmin Loomis
Chicken gumbo was pretty good, the seafood gumbo was pretty tasteless. Our waiter was lovely and the pecan pie was perfect, not too sweet. Nice atmosphere. Good prices for eating in the quarter.
C Go
Southern hospitality is real, and Creole cuisine's goodness realer. Ordered jambalaya for my first ever main in New Orleans and wasn't disappointed. It's a Louisiana dish of Spanish and French influence, and the one I ordered consisted of smoked sausage, shrimp, and chicken. 10/10 would order again.
Charlie Rodgers
Great service, good drinks, and better food. Crawfish Etouffe was worth spending a bit more plus after the gumbo appetizers and brownie to finish, everyone left happy
Makeba Henry
The first time we went it was really good. They make the Best gumbo. The second time was at night. I would come in the afternoon everything was fresh and hot. Both times the service was awesome. Everyone was hospitable
Guillaume Martin
Hummm... Just average. Compared to everything else we had here, it’s just OK. Quite a long queue to get seated, for OK food. Price is OK too. Decor is a bit old.
March 12th edit: Thanks Gaylin for reaching out! I don’t remember the exact name of the dishes... I believe it was “crawfish étouffée” and “red bean and rice boudin”. Hope this helps!
Admin D Ball
Stopped in for a quick bite in a cool drink, great atmosphere both air conditioning inside seating and a very time. Correct cool little Courtyard or you can enjoy lunch. The wait was quick the service was prompt and courteous and the food was absolutely fantastic. Definitely some great local cuisine and the prices were moderate and the drinks were good.
Stacey Kirk
I wished we would have found this place a lot sooner. I got the chicken and andouille sausage gumbo and my husband ordered the half chicken. Everything was AMAZING!! Our server Kenneth was OUTSTANDING and was very thorough with the menu selection.
Imran Chaudhry
Excellent Food!
We tried Blackened Fish Nuggets and Shrimp creole and Fish Creole and both were fabulous. We really enjoyed it.
Abhinav Rai
After a long queue of about 50 mins, I can say that wait staff was quick, servers were good and food was great. Totally worth the time and money.
Soup and mashed potatoes were perfect.
Denise Thornton
Good food. Crayfish ettoufe, Gumbo and barbecued shrimp that was really barbecued but taste great. Drinks were great too!
Breeonna Reed
If you come with a large group be prepared to wait. We were going to find somewhere else to eat but once we got a whiff of the food inside we decided to wade it out. Food was great and the portions were plentiful. We told our waitress as soon as we sat down we knew what we wanted to order since we were waiting for a while and she made sure our food came out quick!
Bobby Martinez
Absolutely love this quaint little restaurant. Delicious food and our server Mari was absolutely fabulous
Sebastian Massa
This was the kind of French Quarter experience I wanted! It had history, great food, solid drinks, and quality service. Portion sizes are good for the price and most importantly, not so big you end up being stuffed!
In an area filled with flashy experiences that end up not being what they market themselves to be, this one lives up to the name!
Neil Lewis
Not a surprise given the name and reputation but yes there’s excellent gumbo to be had. Bread pudding was just about perfect.
Tony Colbert
Long waits, need more busboys to clean off tables for waiting customers. Food was delicious, recommend the chicken and sausage gumbo and the blackened chicken po boy. Waiter was fantastic.
jess jess
The best red bean and rice I've ever tasted. Seafood gumbo, corn soup, jambalaya, roastbeef Poorboy's, Shrimp ettoufee all had really good flavor.
Cristina Deiac
Delicious food, great service, convenient location!
The alligator sausage was delicious and the crawfish étouffée was one of the best I tried in French Quarter.
Karissa May
Very good food- I got the 3 course meal and split it with my sister. It was more than enough food for us.

Awesome Cajun cuisine. The Seafood okra Gumbo and Crawfish Etouffe were awesome, as well as the bread pudding. Well recommended!!!

A group of friends I and I stopped at the Gumbo Shop when we took a trip to New Orleans, and it was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. The food and service were both outstanding. This is a must stop!

Great service, Cajun Bloody Mary Red beans and Rice and Seafood/Okra Gumbo. I wish the gumball had more okra pieces but the flavor was yummy! The bread is delicious!!

Our first time to NOLA and the Gumbo Shop was our very first stop. No regrets. Lucky we got there when we did, while we were eating, the lines were starting to form outside and for good reasons. This place is fantastic. A pleasant experience and our server Kerri was wonderful. I had a Cajun Bloody Mary and it was the best I’ve ever had. I also got the blackened Catfish with the crab cake on top which wasn’t listed on the menu but it was very flavorful and delicious!!!

A must go to spot while in town, some of the best food I’ve had in New Orleans with very friendly staff that’ll make you feel right at home, especially Brandon, a man who perfectly embodies the spirit of southern hospitality!

1st visited here as a US Marine in Aug of 1993 at the young age of 18 when I was stationed at Keesler air force base in Biloxi, MS. Not much has changed which in my opinion is a great thing...the restaurant and the gumbo have been incredible for more than 25 yrs...since that 1st visit so long ago I've found myself back in N'awlins a dozen more times and almost always that rich, fragrant, thick gumbo finds a way to draw me back here time and time again...expect a line as the seating only holds about 60...or you can do as I do and sweat it out on the umbrella covered patio if you just cant wait for that creole flavor. Pictured are the Chicken Andouille gumbo and the Macque Choux Corn

Nice service and tasty gator sausage. The BBQ shrimp is average.

Orders the okra gumbo, crawfish etouffee and bread pudding. All very good, excellent service and even though there seemed like we were going to wait a long time to be seated we just waited like 15 min. Very good service.

This place is the real deal. Make sure you order multiple items so that you can try as much delicious food as possible.
The ambience is cool, the service is friendly and prompt, and the food is outstanding.

Classic New Orleans food. The place to visit for gumbo and jambalaya

If visiting New Orleans for the first time, this is a place you should go to too try gumbo. It’s really good and the restaurant is right on the streets of the French quarter. Be carful at what time you go! You may have to wait a while!
